JC's Dodger Line Drives | Dec. 1: L.A.'s Vin Scully To Return for 2010

The Dodgers have just confirmed, to the great pleasure of their fans, the return of their most valuable asset—Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully.

In the middle of last season, the 60th of Scully's Dodger career, there was a lot of conjecture regarding how much longer baseball fans would be able to enjoy the unique poetic narrative Scully provides.

Often in reply to this question, Scully would talk about how the best way to make God smile is to tell of one's future plans. Tuesday brought a fresh quote from the Dodger announcer, who celebrated his 82nd birthday the previous Sunday.

"We have had two exciting seasons consecutively—getting into the second round of the playoffs—and when you get that close, you look to the next year as perhaps the one that you go all the way," Scully said in a statement released by the team Tuesday.

"I'm very excited and optimistic about 2010 and the direction we're heading and we'll take it year-to-year after that."

Dodger fans have had little to celebrate since their season ended at the hands of the Phillies for the second straight year, one step away from the World Series.

The pending divorce of the McCourts has dominated headlines. The retention of GM Ned Colletti, along with manager Joe Torre indicating his willingness to continue at the helm of the team beyond 2010, has provided scant solace.

Manny Ramirez has picked up his option for next year, the value of which has been vigorously debated. Will the Dodgers see more of the same problems from last season, or could playing for a new contract focus Ramirez to deliver numbers more along the lines what he put up for L.A. in 2008?

Will Colletti finally deal Juan Pierre in order to acquire help elsewhere, or will the Dodgers again go with four starting-caliber outfielders with only three positions available?

Questions also swirl around the catching and second base positions.

Has Russell Martin been overused and is now in a downward spiral? Will the Dodgers finally bring in someone who will provide enough rest for Martin to return to the promise shown his first couple of seasons?

Orlando Hudson was burned by the way he was handled toward the end, all but ending any chance of a return. Will Ronnie Belliard, who supplanted the O-Dog and brought a fresh bat, be retained? With all the rumors of new second basemen coming to town, when will Blake DeWitt ever get a real opportunity to take over?

Then there is the state of the pitching staff to ponder. Who will join Clayton "Chinstrap" Kershaw at the front end of the rotation? Will Chad Billingsley emerge from the fires of the second half of last year to become a dominant front-line pitcher? Can Colletti retain Randy Wolf? How will the dead dollars allocated for years to Jason Schmidt be reinvested?

Was last year the final hard lesson before Jonathan Broxton becomes a dominating closer for the next decade? Will last year's acquisition from Baltimore, George Sherrill, bounce back from his playoff disappointment after dominating the National League? Can Hong-Chih Kuo stay healthy for an entire season? How will the balance of the pen be constructed?

Answers to these questions will make themselves apparent in the fullness of time during this offseason. What is now certain will be the lead voice behind the Dodger mic, what I like to refer to as "The Voice of God."

Coupled of course with the forbearance of The Almighty, in order to allow fans to enjoy a 61st season described by the greatest announcer in this or any other sport, Vin Scully.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | Oct. 20: Dodgers Extend GM Ned Colletti's Deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today they will extend general manager Ned Colletti's contract. After speaking with the team's PR department, I was informed that while they will not release the exact number of years in the agreement, the word is it will be a long-term deal.

For Dodger fans who were hoping for a change in that position, this comes as bad news. I have to admit to being in that camp, as I had been hoping the Dodgers would make current assistant GM Kim Ng the first female general manager in major league baseball. Now it will be incumbent upon another organization to step up and give Ng the opportunity she deserves.

The San Diego Padres had a preliminary conversation with Ng on Saturday, when new Padres owner Jeff Moorad was seen having lunch with Ng, according to a release on the Padres Web site. The article also claims Moorad has indicated the new Padre GM would not come from within the San Diego organization nor from the Arizona franchise, with whom Moorad was previously associated.

If Ng is hired by San Diego and performs the duties to the degree I feel she is capable, this could be the greatest loss of management-level personnel since the former owners—the fine folks at the Fox Corp.—drove off Mike Scioscia, who subsequently found fertile ground in Anaheim to ply his trade.

The greatest loss of player personnel in Los Angeles also occurred under Fox's watch, when Chase Carey, an avowed Yankees fan, usurped the position of then-GM Fred Claire, dealing Mike Piazza to Florida mainly to solidify a cable TV transaction. How any self-respecting sporting commissioner could allow such a travesty to occur is a good question, but I digress.

The Dodger press release highlights Colletti's accomplishments, of which there are more than a few. His first trade, which flushed Milton Bradley up to Oakland in exchange for Andre Ethier, has turned out to be a deal any GM would be happy to hang his hat on. Well, any GM except for the A's Billy Beane, that is.

The Dodgers have qualified for the postseason in three of Colletti's four seasons, a feat never before accomplished by a Dodger GM. Of course, no Dodger GM has lasted four seasons since the Foxification endured by Dodger fans. Under the O'Malleys, Dodger GM tenures would be at least a decade long, not to mention the smaller postseason pool.

Colletti has turned in an excellent job in retaining the core of the Dodger farm system, players such as Matt Kemp, James Loney, Russell Martin, Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw, and Jonathan Broxton.

He is also responsible for bringing in Hall of Fame-caliber talent like Greg Maddux, Manny Ramirez, and Jim Thome. Other key additions during Collette's watch include Casey Blake, Orlando Hudson, Randy Wolf, Vincente Padilla, George Sherrill, and Ronnie Belliard. This year, the bench has been strengthened greatly with the addition of veterans Mark Loretta, Brad Ausmus, and Juan Castro.

Still, the other side of the ledger must be considered. A massive error was committed when Jayson Werth was not tendered a new contract after the 2006 season. While Werth had missed the entire year due to a broken bone in his hand, Colletti should have been able to recognize that Werth possessed plus-level abilities in all five tools.

Granted, none of them were maxed out, but the non-tender was not a wise choice. Werth has come back with a vengeance in Philadelphia, a team that has tormented the Dodgers the previous couple of years.

Colletti's memory shouldn't have been so faulty, given he was in the same division for many years, serving as the assistant GM in San Francisco. Players brought down from his time there are another reason for some of the black marks on the ledger.

Colletti is responsible for one of the greatest wastes of free-agent money ever, when he inked Jason Schmidt to a long-term deal. This, in spite of Schmidt's transition from hard-throwing demon into a sore-armed server of juicy slabs of prime rib, seemingly unable to chew gum and walk at the same time without getting injured. A transition that started while both were still sporting black and orange.

One must also not forget the signing of Bill Mueller to a two-year contract, ostensibly to play third base. Mueller did play third, for all of 30 games before injuries converted him to a front-office position.

Another former Giant whose best days were in the rear-view mirror was pitcher Brent Tomko. His already marginal numbers with San Francisco ratcheted upward, as his ERA rose to 5.24 from 4.26 and his WHIP went from 1.357 in SF to 1.470 with LA.

Of course, the less said about Andruw Jones, the better.

A final bone of contention I'll put on the table isn't truly a negative as far as production on the field is concerned, but can be considered a burning hole in the pocketbook. Juan Pierre was given a massive five-year contract to play center field and spark the offense at the top of the order.

Pierre brought the bat, hitting .293 with an OBP of .331, however he is a speed demon not a slugger. It can be argued Pierre is being paid a slugger's salary. Juan also brings the leather and range to patrol center field, but his arm has been found lacking. This can not be considered surprising given Pierre was a known quantity, having played seven National League seasons before being signed.

Pierre's days as a starter with the Dodgers ended when Manny Ramirez was acquired. Given the Bostonian roots of the Dodgers ownership, I have always stopped short of giving Colletti credit for bringing Manny to town. The way Manny's retention played out gives even more credence to that point.

Still, the gritty way Pierre goes about his job, always working hard hours before the game, sets a fine example for the younger players. His hitting remains consistent with his career numbers, and the blazing speed can be intimidating to opposing pitchers and fielders.

It had been widely speculated Colletti overspent to keep Pierre from signing with the Giants. If so, one can hope three years later Colletti has been seasoned enough not to overreach in a similar situation.

The recent news regarding the impending dissolution of the marriage of Dodger owners Frank and Jamie McCourt has given Dodgers fans much to be concerned about. How will the franchise be operated? Will there be cuts in the major league budget? What about the farm system?

The long-term nature of Colletti's extension could be an attempt to provide some stability in what could turn out to be a very unstable situation. The lack of a firm announcement on the number of years leaves a tinge of concern still lingering in the minds of Dodger fans. Many will remain skeptical regarding the future direction of this landmark franchise.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | Aug. 8: Dodger Bats Leave Clayton Kershaw Hanging

Clayton "Chinstrap" Kershaw took the mound Saturday night in Los Angeles looking to redeem himself after taking a loss his last time out against Milwaukee, in a game where he only worked four innings and allowed a career-high six walks.

Chinstrap found a full measure of redemption against the Atlanta Braves, hurling seven innings of shutout ball, conceding only two hits and one run while striking out 10 batters. Of his 103 pitches, 70 were strikes.

The bad news for Kershaw, and Dodger fans, was the equally impressive work of the Braves' Kenshin Kawakami, who matched Chinstrap goose egg for goose egg.

Japanese Special K

Kawakami, a MLB rookie who had previously logged 11 seasons with Chunichi of Japan's Central League, faced Los Angeles for the first time in his MLB career.

He matched Chinstrap's seven shutout innings while allowing four hits and three walks. He also struck out four Dodger batters. Kawakami delivered 125 pitches, of which 76 were strikes.

Kawakami entered the game having allowed three earned runs or fewer in 14 of his last 16 starts. He had also allowed five or fewer hits in five of his last eight outings.

Incredibly, Kawakami has not won in his last five starts, counting his outing against the Dodgers. He has only one win in his last eight starts and two in the last 13.

Where's the Eye Chart?

Kershaw left the game for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Dodgers had loaded the bases with two out. Mark Loretta was called out on strikes by home plate umpire Mike Reilly, who ruled Loretta did not hold up on a check swing. This came after Brad Ausmus had struck out.

Both teams were not happy with Mr. Reilly's strike zone, and there were some rumblings heard in the press box, as a few of the reporters who were sitting around your humble correspondent also had their reservations as to the quality of Mr. Reilly's work.

This follows up the game before, when Eric Cooper seemed to confuse the hand signal for a strike and apply it to a pitch he ruled to be ball four. Mr. Cooper was able to record both a manager and pitcher in the ejection fantasy league standings though.

Atlanta's Bobby Cox, the skipper who holds Major League Baseball's all-time record for ejections of a manager, had to question the call, which converted a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play into runners on first and second. It appeared to this observer Cox had justifiable reason for his displeasure.

After discussing the matter for a bit, Cooper gave Cox the heave-ho. When Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens was lifted later in the inning, a few choice words from him triggered a second ejection, along with the lightening of his wallet.

Return of Belisario

An hour before the start of this game, the Dodgers optioned out reliever Scott Elbert, who had been tabbed to make his first major league start on Sunday. His roster spot was taken by Ronald Belisario, who had been put on the DL effective July 6 due to elbow discomfort in his pitching arm.

Fortunately, the injury Belisario suffered was not as serious as first feared, and the Dodgers were able to use one of their most pleasant surprises this season in this game.

He came in to start the eighth inning and faced three hitters, getting a couple of ground outs before walking pinch hitter Kelly Johnson.

At that point Dodger manager Joe Torre called for George Sherrill. The recent acquisition from the Baltimore Orioles issued a free pass of his own, to pinch hitter Greg Norton, before retiring Ryan Church on a force play.

That Just Ain't Right, Man

Elbert's elevator ride scheduled for the penthouse, in the form of his first major league start, snapped a cable and plunged him into the basement, courtesy an option back to the minors.

The extra-inning game Friday forced Torre's hand, and Elbert gave up a couple of runs and a homer off the bat of Church. He did strike out Adam LaRoche before the damage was suffered.

Abreu Starts

Torre continued to play his new cards by also inserting Tony Abreu into the starting lineup at third base. Abreu delivered a few nice defensive plays and went 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk.

Given the team will have a day game next, Torre decided to start the game with both Casey Blake and Russell Martin on the bench. It would not be surprising to see one of the middle infielders get tomorrow off as well.

Return of Stults

After the game, Torre announced the Dodger starter for Sunday will be Eric Stults. He will be added to the active roster tomorrow, pending a still-to-be-decided move to open some space.

Torre and Ned Colletti were not willing to give any hints as to who would get sliced, and a decision might not come until around noon, as the game will start at 1 PM.

This is a very good move, as I have been impressed with Stults' work over the last two seasons and would feel very comfortable with him in the starting rotation.

Far more comfortable than with some of the carcasses currently sitting on the side of the MLB starter superhighway, such as John Smoltz.

While Stults might never reach the level Smoltz had known in the past, his present is far superior to the one Smoltz is living with. Stults should be very effective in the four or five hole in the Dodger rotation for the next few years.

JC's Dodger Dugout Whispers | Will There Be LA / San Francisco Fireworks

Next week, the Los Angeles Dodgers travel north to face their favorite enemy, the San Francisco Giants, in a three game series that begins on Monday. Looking forward, past your current opponent, is one of the worst things a player or team could do. However it is quite acceptable for fans and media types to engage in that sort of activity.

Dodger and Giant fans always keep an eye on the horizon for the next time these teams hook up. We've waited a long time for this set, as it's been three months, May 8-10, since the last time these teams locked horns. There were some fireworks and tears after the last game, an extra inning affair won by the Giants, but what happened during the bonus frames is where an interesting tail lies.

The Giants had scored one in the sixth and another in the eighth to tie the game, then took a lead in the top of the 12th. With one out in the bottom of the 12th, the Dodgers Casey Blake smacked a homer into the left field seats to tie the game off Giant's closer Brian Wilson.

Upon returning to the dugout, Blake made a gesture with his hands, mocking the motion Wilson makes after closing out a Giants victory. Afterwards, a teary eyed Wilson was visibly upset, taking great offense to Blake's actions, given the gesture combines both a tribute to his late father as well as religious significance.

Of course, that bit of information was unknown to the Dodgers and their fans. There is a well done article by Andre Utula Tameta on the situation when it happened here. The comment thread shows where fans from both sides of the rivalry stand.

Fast forward to this week, and the festivities during the Dodger/Brewer series, what with Prince Fielder looking to break into the Dodger clubhouse so he can confront Guillermo Mota after being drilled on his leg.

Speaking with Joe Torre the day after, I asked if some of the feistiness in this current series might have something to do with the team getting ready to travel up to San Francisco next week and any residual emotions from the Blake and Wilson situation.

At first surprised, Joe shook his head no and said, "This game is a very emotional game, and I don’t think there’s going to be anything going on there."

Then I asked if it was more for the fans than the players.

"No I mean there’s a personal reason why, I found out later why Wilson does certain things. You don’t know all that stuff because you are here trying to win a ball game, trying to play a ballgame.

"But, as I say it’s emotional, and I’ve had pitchers like Pasqual Perez strike you and then go, makes motion as if blowing smoke off the end of a gun, just to make (Bob) Gibson cringe just because he was his pitching coach. It’s style in a lot of ways.

"I’ve had Ruben Sierra that used to hit a home run then run by the dugout – I don’t like that, let’s not do that anymore.

"Then again, some people do it for other reasons more so than being showy or stylish and I guess in Wilson’s case he has personal reason why he does certain things. I think we all respect that, we don’t always know it either. When Casey did something he certainly wasn’t aware of the personal nature of why Wilson was doing it."

Then I asked if Casey & Wilson had a conversation about it, to which Torre replied, "I have no idea. You know, this game’s not easy to play and I think we all understand that. We know who we are and we know that’s not who we are."

I finished by asking Torre in reference to the 70’s and famous Dodger/Giants brawls. "No, no, no," Torre said, "We know how tough it is to play this game, we certainly don’t make fun of each other purposely."

In the clubhouse later, I spoke with Blake about a couple of different things. My last questions were about Wilson and the upcoming series against the Giants.

Blake gave a simple "No." when asked if he had any conversation with Wilson since that game.

Taking it a step further, I asked if it was on his radar, with the team going up there next weekend, if he was thinking about it.

Blake offered only, "Yeah, I’m sure the fans up there haven’t forgotten about it. It’s in the past, it happened a long time ago."

Having been around Blake a handful of times since the Dodgers have allowed me media level access, I've noticed how he is one of the more low-key Dodger players. He goes about his business in a serious fashion. That's not to say he doesn't express himself a bit more when the clubhouse is closed to all except the team and staff.

He is also reserved and not the type who you would look to start something with an opposing team. After that game in May, Blake mentioned how he "got outside his box" when making the gestures.

Of course, we have to see how the Giants feel about things at this point. They have cut into the divisional lead the Dodgers have enjoyed for a while. I have a feeling they would consider making up ground more important than looking for some sort of revenge over a personal grievance.

The Dodgers would be better served to concentrate on adding some more distance between themselves and the pursuing San Franciscans.

It seem most likely the previous events will be good to stir up the passions, toss a few more boo's crackle the talk radio airwaves, sell some newspapers, and manipulate many electrons here on the Internet. But as to the players themselves, don't expect much reaction.

JC's Dodger Fan Alert : Under the Stars in LA & New Manny Bobblehead

Great news for Los Angeles Dodger fans who like to spend a summer evening under the stars! The Dodgers are offering a limited number of fans the chance to have a sleep over on the outfield grass at the stadium on Friday, August 14.

The event features watching the Dodger game in Arizona on DodgerVision, playing catch in the outfield, and a screening of Field Of Dreams, the iconic Kevin Costner film where the legends do come after he builds it.

The cost is $200 for adults and $100 for children. There is also a family package of $500 for two adults and two children available. A Dodger goodie bag is included in the price, along with dinner on Friday night and a buffet breakfast Saturday morning.

The Dodger game against the Diamondbacks will begin at 6:40 PM and will be followed by the movie shortly after it's conclusion. Fans are asked to bring their own sleeping bags, as tents will not be permitted inside Dodger Stadium.

To maximize the experience for Dodger fans, this event is limited to only 500 people. The first 200 who purchase their tickets will also receive a sleeved blanket. The deadline to enroll is August 10.

The Dodgers require that all children must be accompanied by an adult, with one adult per a maximum of three children in the party.

For more information or to sign up, go to www.dodgers.com/dodgerlife or call (323) 224-2646.

This program is part of DODGERLIFE, which was created this year to help bring Dodger fans closer to the team outside of the actual games. You might remember the fishing trip I wrote of last month, or batting practice back in June.

Fans have the chance to meet current and former Dodger players, participate in Dodger Fantasy Camps, or take a road trip with the team. These and more events are scheduled throughout the year as part of the DODGERLIFE program.

***********

The Dodgers have just announced an additional bobblehead night, for Wednesday September 16, when the team will host the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 12:10 PM game.

The bobblehead depicts Manny waving to the fans after hitting his pinch-hit grand slam against the Cincinnati Reds on July 22.

The Dodgers have also put together a limited package where for $64, a fan will receive the first Manny bobblehead that was given out on July 22, a reserved level ticket for the Sept. 16 game against the Pirates, a ticket for the Aug. 23 game against the Chicago Cubs, a ticket for the Sept. 6 game versus the San Diego Padres, and a ticket for the Sept. 20 game when the villains who dress in Orange and Black travel down from San Francisco.

It is also possible to upgrade your seat location. Fans can sit in the lower Reserve for $80 and $120 will buy you Field Box seats. Tickets for four games and two Manny bobbleheads, this makes for quite the tasty package.

Tickets are available through the team website, calling 866-DODGERS, going to the Dodger Stadium Advance Ticket windows or at any Ticketmaster location.

Thoughts and Observations on the New Leaks Off Baseball's Steroid List

Wednesday saw a double-header in this latest episode of the slow leak off the list from 2003 of positive tests for Major League Players.

Never mind the tests were supposed to be for evaluation purposes only, and kept anonymous. That's a piddling detail when we have grist for the public humiliation mill.

The question before the house is how to deal with this ongoing situation. The release of sealed information is illegal, as the player's union head Donald Fehr said on Wednesday.

But what about a nation's right to know what is actually happening in the game? Doesn't the Government have the right to seize these records and disseminate the information contained therein for the greater good?

We are on a slippery slope here folks. What level of intrusion is permitted due to the celebrity status afforded baseball players—along with other professional athletes?

What does this say about a Government, the United States Government, that allows classified information to be leaked in a manner usually reserved when the White House, any administration's White House, wants information to become public but keep it's hands clean at the same time.

This is a dangerous game that is being played.

The players consider this situation to be a knife in their back. The players went along with the request to have anonymous testing to see the percentage of them would test positive, confident in the belief it would not reach the threshold that would show a need for further consideration.

Now they feel manipulated and let down by both the commissioner's office and their union leadership. I can understand where they are coming from, as they have basically been lied to and are now subject to derision and defamatory media reports on information that was never to be made public.

Either the players were too foolish to stop in time to test positive, were too arrogant to care about testing positive, or felt too much pressure to keep their position on the roster to risk stopping their extracurricular medical activities.

What ever the reason, the tests were going to be kept confidential and no names would be attached to the results. Good luck in getting the union to agree to some sort of confidential testing arrangement in the future.

Many media types and fans I've spoken with lean to the "it's got to be all released" crowd. They feel it will be better for the sport to crawl over the rusty nails and broken glass of this situation and get it over with.

Spill all the barrels of blood on the infield and let it soak in. Sure, there will be a couple of months of hell, but until baseball goes through this catharsis, the healing can not begin.

Uncle Sam came along and snapped up all this data just before it was to be destroyed. The given reason was for the Barry Bonds trial, but what was obtained proved to be too enticing for the Feds to keep all to themselves.

Now, the sport suffers from a media devised version of Chinese Water Torture. We get names dripped out a little at the time. The source is, of course, confidential. The paper breaking this latest story is the New York Times, with the article written by one Michael S. Schmidt.

A check of his recent articles shows Schmidt spends the majority of his time covering the legal and drug side of the game. He has obviously made a contact, or contacts, with folks who have this list supposedly of 103 who tested positive in 2003.

The manner in which this information is coming out is, in the opinion of this reporter, scandalous and illegal. Behavior that is as malevolent as the topic being reported on.

What ever adjective you want to use for these lifeforms, one should not include baseball fan, as their actions are torturous to the players, fans and the game in general.

The fans of baseball have taken many hits over the last few years. We can be excused for feeling like the aircraft carriers from both sides in the Battle of Midway. There isn't a team who have not been touched by this scandal, and the reputation of the players, whether innocent or guilty, are in tatters.

The early days of the steroid scandal saw many staunch supporters of law and order, wanting the cheaters to be run out of the game. As time goes on, it becomes apparent if that were to happen, we might not have enough major league quality players to populate all the rosters.

The teams and Commissioner Bud Selig are also complicit. It is often said Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa saved the game with their chase of Maris's single season record. Who put the game in the position of having to be saved in the first place? Mr's Selig and Fehr fingerprints are all over that particular crime scene.

Instead of "The Steroid Era", this shameful chapter of baseball history should be known as "The Selig Era" for the missteps and lack of character from the commissioner which put the sport in the position it finds itself in currently.

So where should we go from here? We must have the names of those who failed the test in 2003, no matter the level of pain for the players, the fans, and the sport in general. There will be no punishment for them from the league, as there was no rules in place at the time.

We must also have the head(s) of the leakers. They are violating the sanctity of sealed court documents. Such behavior can not be condoned. Even if they feel they are in the right, they should be willing to step forward and fall on their sword.

If not, President Obama should appoint a baseball steroid czar to ferret out the details on the who, what where and how. Lord knows the man loves appointing czars, as if he is going to single handily reverse the unemployment crisis the country finds itself in.

No team and it's set of fans are untouched by this. We must stop playing the blame game for the past. Just suck it up and deal with it.

As Alfred Pennyfeather remarked in Batman Begins, "Why do we fall, sir? So that we might learn to pick ourselves up." Baseball must pick it's collective self up of the ground, brush off the dirt and move forward.

Open Mic: Reflections on My Ben Franklin Milestone With B/R

J.C. Ayvazi at Dodger Stadium May 6, 2009—the day the Dodgers won their record 13th consecutive home game to start the season. Photo Credit: BaseballSavvy.com

This article marks the one hundredth submission I have made to Bleacher Report.

It has been 11 months since joining B/R. At first I was just trying to find a way to have my voice heard. Instead I found a wonderful community—an international community who share a love for writing and sport.

Finding my place here has been an electronic adventure. A spat or three have arisen, but the friendships that have been woven render the former meaningless, for I feel fortunate to have encountered so many wonderful and talented people.

Recently I have considered if I should celebrate the hundredth time of clicking the publishing button. Having seen a few others celebrating their own milestones, in personal and public fashion, I now feel compelled to submit the following letter of appreciation.

We all come to this particular way station with our set of preferences and dislikes. The level of appreciation and respect for others is what makes this place unlike so many other sporting sites. Granted things may not always go smoothly, but which large family has no issues while gathered around the dinner table?

The thing I am most surprised at is the many friendships I have struck with fans of teams that, well to be honest, I have spent a long time despising. If nothing else, Bleacher Report has opened my eyes to the fact good fans are pretty much the same, just wearing different jerseys.

Maybe I knew that before, but the Bleachers made it more obvious and palpable.

One must tip their hat to the gang of four who first conceived such a place; though I am sure what has followed has far outstripped their expectations. Particularly to Zander, the most public of the four, who’s help has been sent my way few times. I salute you, sir, on such a fine job riding this bucking bronco.

After walking through the door and setting up shop with my favorite baseball, football, and hockey teams, I began to meet some very generous and kind folks. In the Dodger community was Molly Gray, who sadly is not currently active due to the demands of school. She is the one who nominated me to replace her as the Dodger community leader.

It is a post I take very seriously, as new members who are loyal to the Big Dodger in the Sky along with those who venture by carrying brickbats have found.

I have also been most fortunate in turning this opportunity into the chance to have a level of access to the team I could only have dreamed of previously. The Dodgers have been very accommodating to bloggers, and I hope other teams and leagues will take their cue in opening the door to responsible members of our community.

One cannot venture in the college football sections for long without encountering Baby Tate. The cliché is how he has forgotten more about football than most will ever know, but don’t believe he has forgotten anything. I would wager good money he knows more about football than a clean room full of computers at Cape Canaveral knows about launching rockets.

Draped in Cardinal and Gold, fine Trojans such as Paul Peszko and rod wood stand out with their keen observations and staunch loyalty to the University of Southern California.

The passion of the Raider Nation (which is the only nation, sorry but the other “nations” are but dust swirls in the shadows) is well represented. Jeff Little, Al’s Wingman, and Raider Card Addict can always be counted on for solid reporting and quality conversation.

In fact, the Raider newsgroup on usenet is what first alerted me to the presence of Bleacher Report. Any ASFPOR types who wander across this will know of The Shadow, and his tireless searching for articles across the Internet expanse for reprinting there.

Hockey has been both, a feast and a famine. While the pickings can be slim in the Kings group, the Canadians section is brimming with talented and engaging folks. Miah D. was the first writer to reach out to and make me feel welcome. Through her I have met so many others who are so kind and gracious.

Leading the way on that score would have to be the woman who represents the conscience of the Bleachers, Saraswathi Sirigina. How could I anticipate when joining I would have met someone on the other side of the world who could make me think and feel so deeply on a range of topics? You are a treasure Sarah.

Gray Ghost and LJ Burgess must also be mentioned, as their skill in writing, though not as voluminous as I might hope, always resides in the top tier. Beyond that, their fellowship and encouragement is always most gratifying.

In my wanderings across the pond to check in with the EPL, I have found some interesting chaps and lasses who prefer their football hands-free. Willie Gannon and Barney are a couple of the brightest lights in a constellation of stars.

One must not forget the editors as well, for they make all of us electron manipulators look the best we can, a digital combination of personal trainers and make-up technicians.

High on my gratitude list are Tim Coughlin and Ryan Droege, who have time after time corrected my errors and have made valuable suggestions to improve my overall quality of work.

Having received so much from the community, I also have felt the need to pass some of it along. Iowa Chick, Evan Chavez , and Josh Dhani are a few of the people to whom I have made suggestions. Their work is quite worthy of your consideration.

A few others must also be mentioned. Some like Lisa Horne have moved on but can never be forgotten. Anyone who has known her writing continues to strive for her level of excellence.

Others are constantly active and always most welcome. Leroy Watson, Andrew Nuschler, Richard Marsh, Bob Wagna, and PJ Ross are baseball people with whom I would call upon, as so eloquently stated by my favorite poet and shaman Jim Morrison, to plan a murder or start a religion.

I could go on and on, after all my fan lists each top the century mark as well, built up by numerous exchanges in the comment threads.

I am proud to have a more than three to one ratio when it comes to comments made vs. articles written, since a community works better with interaction. Our writing also improves when we are challenged and made to consider our positions.

Before the end, I would be remiss if I did not also acknowledge Patrick Mauro, who does such a fine job with his radio program, and has been kind enough to invite me on a few times to discuss Dodger baseball, among other items.

Granted there are many more I have not mentioned by name, but for every one else, please know your work and comments have been an inspiration. I am grateful to all whose path I have crossed in the Bleachers, and tip my Dodger Blue chapeau to you all in respect and appreciation.

J.C.'s Dodger Line Drives, July 22 : L.A.'s Manny and Chad Show Stifles Cincy

Manny Ramirez unloads on a knee-high fastball for his 21st career grand slam and the winning margin in Wednesday's game against Cincinnati's Nick Masset. Photo Credit: J.C. Ayvazi

Sometimes good things happen to those who wait.

Other times, it can really be something tremendous, such as what happened Wednesday night when Dodger fans in general and Manny Ramirez in particular waited for six innings before setting off a king-sized cannon charge in the form of a pinch-hit grand slam to pace the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

On a night the Dodgers gave away bobblehead dolls of the dreadlocked slugger, the sellout crowd of 56,000 rejoiced after Manny stepped forward to provide yet another thrill to the championship-starved baseball fans of Los Angeles.

Manny was originally in the first draft of the lineup, as he gave a thumbs up to the coaching staff during early workouts. That was until Dodger manager Joe Torre consulted with the training staff. One quick edit later, Manny was out, Juan Pierre was in, and starting pitcher Chad Billingsley found himself batting eighth in the order.

Since this all took place before the official lineups were submitted, Manny was still eligible to play in the game. While he didn't play long, one can be confident Reds manager Dusty Baker thought he was in far too long.

This was Manny's first ever pinch-hit homer and the fourth bomb pulled off the bench for the Dodgers this season.

Since being sprung from Bud Selig's doghouse, Manny is hitting .347 (17-for-49) with four taters and 17 RBI.

The Bill Comes Due

Billingsley, the snake-bit Dodger ace, was able to snap a six-game winless streak by posting six innings of mostly good pitching.

The game started off in less than stellar fashion as the first Red to face him, right fielder Chris Dickerson, smacked a ground-rule double to left center. One out later, Joey Votto doubled him home with a drive just fair down the right field line.

Billingsley then found his groove, retiring the next eight hitters, until Votto and Brandon Phillips led off the fourth with singles. A grounder to first was turned into a slick 3-6-3 double play by James Loney, and Edwin Encarnacion struck out to end the threat.

The fifth inning also challenged Billingsley, as Jerry Hairston Jr. led off with a double but was nailed by catcher Russell Martin when he tried to steal third, violating one of baseball's cardinal rules by making the first out of an inning at third.

He could not get by three times in a row though, as Willy Taveras led off the sixth with a single and stole second. Votto's third hit of the night moved Taveras to third, where he later scored on a wild pitch. Billingsley bounced back to strike out Encarnacion to end this threat as well.

For the game, Billingsley went six innings, allowing two runs (both earned), seven hits, and one walk. He struck out seven, threw 93 pitches, of which 59 were strikes, and moved his record to 10-5.

Afterward, Billingsley expressed some relief at ending his drought but was quick to credit his teammates, particularly Manny, for picking him up.

While describing his last six outings as surreal, Billingsley made a point to go right after the hitters. Of the 24 batters faced, Billingsley got first pitch strikes on 16 of them. Chad also mentioned how he moved to the other side of the rubber to try to improve his control.

Improved command of his curveball kept Reds hitters from sitting on Billingsley's hard stuff. Chad was pleased he was able to spot it much better than last time out, when the Astros knocked him around the yard, chasing him after an inning and two-thirds.

Return of the Big Blue Wrecking Crew

Right fielder Andre Ethier drilled a home run to tie the game in the first inning, knocking a 1-1 fastball into the center field stands. Ethier matched his career high of 20 from last season.

Combined with Manny's granny in the sixth, this marked the third straight game against the Reds that Los Angeles has blasted two home runs.

Monday, Manny and Andre each went deep, and Tuesday Loney and Rafael Furcal turned the trick—with Randy Wolf just missing one of his own, tattooing the wall in the right field corner.

Also in Wednesday's game, Casey Blake just missed on a deep fly to center leading off the sixth inning. Taveras leaped high at the wall to make the catch.

Speed Demon Loney

For the second night in a row, a Dodger tripled down the left field line. Last night, it was Manny in the first inning. Tonight, Loney pulled the three-bag trick, with a fly ball down the line on which the Reds' Laynce Nix tried to make a sliding catch. The ball landed in front of Nix and bounced behind him, scoring Ethier, who had walked, and allowing the 6'3", 220-pound Loney to ramble into third without a play.

Dugout Whispers

Before the game, Torre was asked what adjustments the staff had made in regards to Billingsley after the Astro bombardment. He spoke of mechanical changes, trying to get a consistent follow-through in Chad's delivery. The results were mixed, as a handful of times Billingsley seemed off-balance after delivering a pitch.

Torre also mentioned how Chad will put more pressure on himself than necessary, given the departure of Derek Lowe and Brad Penny from last year's team and Hiroki Kuroda's injury after the first game of this season.

On the Hong-Chih Kuo front, Torre informed the media Kuo will pitch in a minor league game this Friday, and he then expects Kuo to be able to rejoin the major league roster next week while the Dodgers are on the road, given no setbacks. The return of Kuo will be a major boost to a Dodger pen that has suffered injuries to Ronald Belisario, Cory Wade, Will Ohman, and a season-ender for the star-crossed Eric Milton.

The next topic on the table was the health of second baseman Orlando Hudson, who left the game Sunday after aggravating his left wrist, which was broken last year. Torre said Orlando is looking straight ahead, the wrist is fine, and the area that bothered him Sunday was not related to his previous injury.

The O-Dog is not limited from this recent event, although he has been playing without the ability to bend his wrist backwards all year, an amazing thing when it comes to certain fielding requirements that are part and parcel of playing second base.

Schmidt Schtuff

Caught up with Jason Schmidt before the game. After I said I represent Bleacher Report, Schmidt wondered if he should even talk to me. After checking his iPhone and finding nothing negative, he agreed to answer a few questions.

When asked about his feelings after the long road he traveled to get back on a major league mound, Schmidt admitted to having mixed feelings. Obviously, he was happy to be back and contributing, particularly with a playoff-caliber team like the Dodgers.

He was also very honest about it being difficult with the depleted arsenal he now takes to the mound compared to his pitch quality prior to the injuries. Having to fight from pitch to pitch, tooth and nail, is not how he enjoys going about his work.

I asked if he thought about trying to throw a knuckleball, which drew a quick laugh. Schmidt spoke of talking and joking with Charlie Hough, a longtime knuckleball pitcher who is currently the pitching coach at the Dodger Single-A team in the California League.

If he was going to consider playing for another five years, it might be the way to go, but that does not seem likely given his injury history. Schmidt also mentioned his young children—who are two, five, and eight years old. He wants to spend as much time as possible with them after what he has missed already.

They are the reason for everything, he said, which shows Jason has a very strong grip on his priorities, even if he no longer has a blazing fastball.

Buckling Up Your Chinstrap

Another pitcher I spoke with before the game was Clayton "Chinstrap" Kershaw. Every time I have visited the Dodger clubhouse, he has been very open and happy to speak with the media. Even the hard-bitten T.J. Simers from the L.A. Times cannot find much to complain about, other than not having something to complain about.

A Dallas native, it was natural for Chinstrap to grow up a Cowboy fan. While a freshman in high school, he played center in front of Matthew Stafford—the overall top pick in the recent NFL draft out of the University of Georgia—and realized his future lay elsewhere. He stopped playing football after one high school season to concentrate on baseball.

Now I'm sure you are wondering where this "Chinstrap" business is coming from. This adjective has been heard bouncing around the Dodger clubhouse the last month or so. It refers to his attempt, not overly successful, to grow a beard. Let's just say nobody will be confusing Chinstrap with Casey Blake.

As a whisker-wearer myself, I asked Chinstrap if he minded my using this nickname for him. Mildly amused at first, Chinstrap gave his consent. The reason I like the nickname, beyond the beard aspect, comes from the dominating stuff Chinstrap brings to the mound—thus leaving the opposing team hanging on by their collective chinstraps and cursing their fate.

So now, the nickname is officially unveiled. Feel free to refer to Kershaw as "Chinstrap" in your articles, my fellow Bleacher Creatures.

Clubhouse Chronicles

Spoke quickly with Randy Wolf prior to the game, asking about the change in the way he wore his socks, with the pant leg tucked in and displaying the solid blue socks. He said he needed to do something to change his bad luck this season.

My follow-up was about keeping the style for his next game, to which Wolf played coy. When asked if he is superstitious, Wolf replied, "Yes." So look for Wolf to be showing those Dodger Blue socks again the next time he hits the mound.

After the game, Wade was seen taking a box of stuff from his locker, which may be in preparation for a trip down to the minors and the start of a rehab stint. Belisario was seen in the Dodger clubhouse tonight, but not Ohman, at least by your humble correspondent.

Naturally, Manny drew a good-sized post-game crowd around his locker. He said how pleased he was to give the fans something to remember the night by, as well as his being honored with the comparisons to stars such as Lou Gehrig. Manny trails the Iron Horse now by two on the career grand slam chart.

Torre expects Manny to be ready to go on Friday, given the team has Thursday off.

Matt Kemp was letting it be known he plans to dominate the other Dodgers Thursday night at the charity bowling event many of the Dodgers will be attending. Manny and event host Loney are both in his sights. Sounds ripe for plenty of verbal darts to be tossed, in a good-natured way.

Shutting the Door

Even though it wasn't a save situation, Torre called on Jonathan Broxton to pitch the ninth inning. Broxton is surprisingly soft-spoken, when compared to his height and blistering fastball.

When asked if he was surprised to get the call with a four-run lead, his answer was, "No." The next question was if he always comes in once gotten up and ready, and again Broxton responded, "No."

Craving more than a single-word reply, I asked for his feelings about the Dodger team being 41-1 in games he has appeared in this year. After a quick grin, Broxton said, "It's pretty awesome, but there is plenty of baseball to go still."

Goes to show more than just batters can find the Dodger closer to be a challenge, but I don't mind having to work for a quote from the man who has grown so well into what may be the most difficult role any player has in this sport.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | July 19: LA's Kershaw Out-Texases Houston

Dodger starter Clayton Kershaw induces a double play out of Astro catcher Humberto Quintero to close out the Houston fifth inning. Photo Credit - J.C. Ayvazi

Dallas native Clayton Kershaw stepped up to prevent the Los Angeles Dodgers from losing their third consecutive game, keeping the Boys in Blue season-long streak of not losing more than two straight games intact, as he dominated the Houston Astros and led his team to a 5-2 victory.

Kershaw has not lost in his last seven outings, winning five times in that span and recording a 0.63 ERA. On top of that, the Dodgers have won all seven of Kershaw’s previous starts.

The victory also served as a fine present for Dodger manager Joe Torre, who was celebrating his 69th birthday. Torre’s teams have won the last five games played on his birthday, though Joe was quick to mention the fact he had not done so well prior to that. Since most of those games were during his Yankee tenure, Dodger fans can’t get too broken up over that fact.

By The Numbers

Kershaw made the 40th start of his career, dominating to such a degree that after the game a reporter suggested it was Kershaw’s best effort of his career. Clayton wasn’t so sure about that theory, but did admit to being very satisfied with his effort.

In advancing his record to 8-5, Kershaw toiled for seven innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out five. Of his 103 pitches, 66 were strikes. In five of his seven innings, Kershaw faced only three batters, aided by a double play in the fifth which erased his walk to Chris Coste.

Kick Save and a Beauty

In the sixth inning, Kershaw used an unusual defensive maneuver to retire his opposing number, Houston starter Mike Hampton.

After Hampton hit a comebacker to the mound, an off balance Kershaw stuck out his left foot to deflect the ball. As the ball bounced back in front of him, Clayton pounced on it and threw to first to retire Hampton.

In the post game gathering in Torre’s office, Joe brought up the name of former Angel starter Jack Lazorko, who was fairly adept with the maneuver. Torre had worked as an Angel broadcaster and had the chance to see Lazorko make that type of play a few time.

Torre also compared the play to a hockey goalie, which is appropriate considering prior to tomorrow’s game, the Los Angeles Kings will have a few players participating in the pregame activities.

Considering Kershaw’s Texas upbringing, I asked him if he had played soccer growing up. Clayton found the question amusing, and said while he had participated as a kid, he stopped playing in the fifth grade.

Starting Early

The Dodgers got out to an early lead, with lead off hitter Rafael Furcal ripping a single to left, followed by a gift triple when Astro left fielder Carlos Lee misplayed a line drive off the bat of Orlando Hudson. Later that inning, Matt Kemp singled home Hudson to give Kershaw an early two run cushion.

And Now For Something Completely Different

The Dodger lineup had an unusual twist, as Torre had Kershaw hit eighth and Juan Pierre in the nine hole. The theory to this strategy lies in stacking three speedsters in front of Manny Ramirez. It also has the effect of giving the team two leadoff hitters hitting back to back without dropping Hudson in the lineup and keeping Manny batting third.

The results in this game were mixed, as Pierre went hitless but Hudson was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Furcal was 1-for-4 and scored once while Manny was also 1-for-4, drilling a double down the left field line during the sixth inning uprising which gave the Dodgers their margin of victory.

D’oh!

Houston’s Hampton suffered a major brain cramp in the sixth inning, which gifted a run to the Dodgers and triggered his removal from the game.

The amusing blooper took place after Mark Loretta had singled home Casey Blake for the Dodger’s second run of the inning, with Blake beating a weak throw from left fielder Lee.

After taking the ball from catcher Humberto Quintero, Hampton attempted to slam the ball into his glove, but whiffed on the attempt. The ball rolled all the way to the Houston dugout, allowing the alert Loretta to take off for second right away, and the surprised Kemp sprinted home with the Dodgers fifth and final run of the game.

After stepping on the plate, Kemp pointed to Loretta, acknowledging his heads up play that let Kemp know Houston had left the back door open.

Return of the Closer

The Dodgers were very happy with the sight of closer Jonathan Broxton earning his 21st save of the season, even if there were some twists and turns before it was all over.

Miguel Tejada led off the ninth with a walk and Lee followed with an infield single. Hunter Pence struck out swinging, as did Chris Coste.

Houston sent Lance Berkman up to pinch hit for Jason Michaels and a carefully working Broxton walked Berkman on four straight. Pudge Rodriguez was called on to hit for the pitcher Alberto Arias. After starting Pudge with two balls, Broxton came back to get the future Hall-Of-Famer swinging to put the game into the refrigerator.

Striking out the side, the final one with the bases loaded, was a bit more of a high wire act than Torre might have wished for, but Broxton did secure the victory and reported no pain in the troublesome toe that has bothered him for almost a month.

Afterward, I asked Broxton if the walk to Berkman was one of those unintentional intentional walks. He said it wasn’t, but he did not want to give him anything too good, given the power Berkman possesses. Pressing further, I asked if he was trying to hit the corners, to which Broxton replied, “I didn’t want to center cut and have him shoot me.”

You just gotta agree with that theory.

Schmidt's Signage Points to Monday

Dodger Manager Joe Torre could hardly contain his smile when he informed the media at his pregame dugout conference the starter for Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, the oft-injured Jason Schmidt.

Torre conceded Schmidt’s velocity is not what is once was, and it is a source of frustration for Jason. Given the years of experience Schmidt has accumulated, he will use some of tricks he has garnered to make up for the loss of raw power.

The reports are that Schmidt is responding well physically after his outings and is throwing about 100 pitches each outing. Torre said Schmidt is at the height of his physical well being during the time Joe has been with the Dodgers. Torre also decreed it is now time to see what Schmidt can do for the team.

In his last Triple-A outing for the Albuquerque Isotopes, Schmidt pitched five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk. Six of the hits were singles and the other was a double. He struck out five Memphis Redbirds and 68 of his 103 pitches were strikes.

Albuquerque ended up blowing the lead Schmidt turned over to the pen and Jason’s 2-0 record remained unchanged. In six games, five of them starts, Schmidt’s ERA is 4.18 over 32.1 innings. He allowed 35 hits and seven walks, striking out 25 batters.

When I asked about Eric Stults, Torre said he is doing well at Triple-A Albuquerque, but is in line behind Schmidt. Stults won his outing on Friday against New Orleans as the Isotopes rolled to a 12-3 victory.

Stults threw six innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits and one walk. He stuck out five Zephyrs and of his 94 pitches, 61 were strikes.

Still the Best

The Dodger victory over Houston padded their slim lead over the Boston Red Sox for the majors’ best record. Los Angeles is now 57-34 while the Sox dropped to 55-35 after losing 6-2 in Toronto against the Blue Jays.

In looking at the NL West race, the San Francisco Giants were shutout in Pittsburgh, losing 2-0 to the Pirates. Thanks to the Bucco’s, Los Angeles was able to extend their divisional lead to seven and a half games over San Francisco.

The Colorado Rockies also lost to the homestanding San Diego Padres, 3-1. The Rocks are now eight games behind the Dodgers.

Coop-A-Loop

Houston’s manager Cecil Cooper was ejected in the middle of the eighth inning, arguing after Jeff Keppinger was called out on a grounder to Hudson.

The O-Dog did not pick the ground ball up cleanly, and his throw to first actually did not arrive ahead of Keppinger. Still, umpire Casey Moser ruled the runner out on a bang-bang play.

Cooper disagreed in the extreme, dashing out to challenge Moser, and protect his player. After getting Keppinger away from the umpire, it took only a few words and gestures to prompt Moser to send him to the showers.

The call loomed large, as a safe call would have meant another run for Houston, and would have reduced the Dodger lead to only two runs.

Asked after the game about a luck factor, Torre immediately referred to a check swing that was not called a strike, a call that Torre strongly disagreed with. Thus, to Joe’s way of thinking, Keppinger should have already been called out and the missed call at first could be considered karmic retribution.

Injury Update

Houston’s Darin Erstad left the game after straining his left hamstring. Erstad entered the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and singled. He pulled up in pain when he reached first and was replaced by Michael Bourne, who stole second and made his way to third before the inning ended.

Enough of That Foolishness

The Dodger victory snapped a five game winning streak by the Astros at Dodger Stadium. The last Dodger home victory over Houston was on August 16th, 2007, when Derek Lowe defeated Wandy Rodriguez and the Astros 6-2, with Takashi Saito earning the save.

Odds and Ends

In a bizarre statistical line, Blake was intentionally walked twice and struck out twice in his four plate appearances. In the field, the Dodgers' third baseman gloved two line shots directly hit at him and started the fifth inning double-play on a grounder hit by Quintero.

Among the 48,298 who attended the game, comedian and high-quality character actor Fred Willard was spotted. When shown on the Dodger Diamond Vision scoreboard, the Dodger cap wearing Willard began to give signals as if he was coaching third base.

Prior to the start of the game, there were a number of music videos played on Diamond Vision, featuring artists such as Los Lobos and Black Eyed Peas. Then during the middle of the sixth inning, Robert Palmer’s video classic “Addicted To Love” ran, interspersed with various shots from the crowd. I was stuck by the thought of what the late Dodger owner Walter O’Malley would have thought of such entertainment being offered in the stadium he designed almost 50 years ago.

Dodger Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully dropped a bit of personal opinion into the game broadcast, commenting on the All-Star Game and how he is amazed that home field advantage in the Fall Classic could be decided by an exhibition game. A very salient point that, and one can only hope it is enough to shake Commissioner Bud Selig from his slumber and revert the rule to having home field alternate between the leagues.

JC's Dodger Snapshots | June's Best of the Rest

Wishful, sinful, wicked blue
Water covers you
Wishful, sinful, wicked you
Can't escape the blue

- From The Doors "Wishful Sinful"

The month of June was very good for your humble reporter and efforts in covering the Los Angeles Dodgers. Four trips to the stadium netted almost 900 photos, which have lead to three slide shows which have been received with many kind comments from various locations all around the Bleachers.

It has been a great honor to have this shows appreciated by so many. After culling through the many leftover photos, I have decided to put together a "Best of the Rest" show using some of the photos which did not make the final cut.

A few of these shots come from my friend, The Cat, who assisted me the "Night Under The Lights". I hope you enjoy this final look at June 2009.

JC's Dodger Watercooler Rumblings | July 11 : Handling Broxton's Injury

The closer for the Los Angeles Dodgers is not well. Jonathan Broxton has been nursing an injured toe for a few weeks, and it has started to affect his pitching.

Word of his bad toe first came out when the Dodgers were playing in Anaheim against the Angels. In the 23 days since then, Broxton has made only eight appearances.

Granted there were a few off days mixed in, but this work load is far less than could be expected from a championship level team's closer.

In that stretch, Broxton converted all four of his save opportunities, and is 20-for-22 on the season. However, on July 5, he came in during a non-save situation and gave up three earned runs, allowing San Diego to tie a game with a five-run ninth inning, costing Chad Billingsley a chance at his 10th victory.

Broxton lost his command, surrendering three walks along with two hits. If Padre catcher Eliezer Alfonzo doesn't slide past third base and get tagged out, San Diego most likely pushes across one more run to win the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Instead, that mistake halts the Padre momentum and the Dodgers are able to use a 13th inning homer from James Loney and three innings of no-hit relief from Jeff Weaver to grab the last game and thus win the series in San Diego.

After not using Broxton during the Mets series, Dodger manager Joe Torre called on him on Friday against the Brewers.

Once more, it is a non-save situation as the Dodgers had cracked open the tie by scoring six runs in the top of the 10th inning, the last four coming on a grand slam by Matt Kemp.

Again, Broxton had a rough outing, conceding two runs on three hits and a walk. Kemp closed out the game with a fantastic over-the-shoulder catch of a deep drive off the bat of Jason Kendall.

The next day, the Dodgers announce Broxton will not pitch the balance of the Brewer series nor will he pitch in the All-Star Game on Tuesday in St. Louis.

The reason given is continued trouble with his right big toe, which is the foot he uses to push off the rubber and lands on after releasing a pitch.

Countermeasures

Considering the trickle down effect, this means the balance of the bullpen will have to pick up the slack. Added to this problem is the fact rookie reliever Ronald Belisario has been placed on the disabled list due to elbow pain.

MRI's have shown no major structural issues, but Belisario is not expected back for at least a month.

Guillermo Mota and Ramon Troncoso will be looked at in the short run to handle the closing duties. For the next few days, they should suffice, though Mota did allow a one run deficit expand to three in Saturday's loss to Milwaukee.

He came in with ducks on the pond and surrendered a double to J.J. Hardy, which cost situational lefty Brent Leach two earned runs.

The Dodgers made a move to strengthen the bullpen prior to Saturday's game, sending Blake DeWitt back down once again to Triple-A Albuquerque, and recalling lefty Scott Elbert for the second time this season.

Elbert entered the game Saturday in the fourth inning, throwing two and two-third innings of relief, and surrendering only one walk. He struck out three and lowered his ERA from 7.11 to an even 5.00 in four outings this year.

The arrival of Elbert means Leach isn't the only left-handed option for Torre, given Will Ohman and Eric Milton are currently residing on the 15-day DL, and Hong-Chih Kuo has just recently started pitching in minor league games. Kuo's return from the 60-day DL remains an open question.

Righty's James McDonald, Corey Wade, and Claudio Vargas round out the bullpen staff, giving Torre and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt seven options until the next roster adjustment.

Given the way the Dodgers go through relief pitchers, often using three per game, they need the extra bodies.

Going Forward

While announcing that Broxton will not pitch the last two games against the Brewers nor in the All-Star game, the second-string Dodger TV announcers, Eric Collins and Steve Lyons, also mentioned that Broxton will go to St. Louis for the All-Star Festivities.

This is completely absurd!

If he is not pitching, the National League needs to add another arm so they are not shorthanded, particularly if the game goes into extra innings.

After all, as FOX and the commissioners office love to keep slamming fans over the head in a sledgehammer like fashion, now it counts.

The National League needs to break the American League's winning streak and give which ever team wins the NL pennant home field advantage in the World Series.

Naturally, those who reside in Dodgertown, Calif., are hoping their Boys in Blue will be the National League representative. That brings up the other element of this situation.

What mental defect impairing which decision maker would allow Broxton to travel to St. Louis for these festivities?

If his bad toe is such that it prevents him from effectively pitching, Broxton needs to come home and rest. Stay off that foot for a couple of days except when getting some treatment from the Dodger training staff.

Broxton is the leader of the Dodger bullpen. He needs to step up and show he knows which is more important, bouncing around the baseball equivalent of Mardi Gras, or taking care of his health so he can be ready once the season resumes.

Broxton, Torre, and Honeycutt will be in for some serious questioning as to why they are not doing what is necessary for the benefit of the Dodger team in general and Broxton in particular if this detail is not handled properly.

JC's Dodger Snapshots | June 27: Images from the Press Box

At long last, various gremlins have been cleared away and I am able to present this slide show which serves as a companion to my article regarding covering this particular game as working media.

That meant access to the field during batting practice, the clubhouse after BP and watching the game from the press box. Sadly, Major League rules prohibit taking photos in the clubhouse, so hopefully these shots of batting practice and other areas of the stadium not accessible to fans will suffice.

The media entrance I was directed to is a the top deck, next to the Top of the Park gift store. Before making my way down to the field, I thought taking a couple of shots from up high would give some perspective.

JC's Dodger Dugout Whispers: 3 LA All-Stars Selected, Kemp Still In Running

Three members of the National League West leading Los Angeles Dodgers have been selected to join the National League All-Stars for July 14th contest in St. Louis at Busch Stadium.

Closer Jonathan Broxton, starting pitcher Chad Billingsley, and second baseman Orlando Hudson are on the NL roster, with outfielder Matt Kemp still under consideration as one of the five finalists for the last spot on the roster.

Broxton is 6-0 with 20 saves and an excellent 2.09 ERA. He has struck out 64 hitters in 38.2 innings of work. Broxton took over the full time closer role from Tashaki Saito this season after filling in during Saito's injury ravaged season last year.

Billingsley has emerged as the ace of the starting staff, with his 9-4 record and 3.12 ERA entering Sunday's game. Billingsley is currently in line to pick up his 10th victory of the season against the Padres in a game in which he has hit his first major league home run.

Hudson has solidified the Dodger infield defense since being signed late as a free agent from the division rival Arizona Diamondbacks. It seems he has fully recovered from the fractured wrist that ended his season prematurely last year.

The O-Dog made a debut in fine fashion, becoming the first Dodger to hit for a cycle since Wes Parker in 1970 during the Dodger home opener. Scuffing as of late, Hudson is hitting .288 with 5 homers, 41 RBI, and 22 doubles.

Hudson made the All-Star team in 2007 while with the Diamondbacks but this will be the first time for both Broxton and Billingsley.

Kemp is one of five vying for the final slot in the Final Vote process. It will be a contentious battle as Cristian Guzman of the Washington Nationals, Mark Reynolds from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Pablo Sandoval of blood-rival San Francisco Giants, and Shane Victorino of the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies are also on the ballot.

Kemp is hitting .303 with 10 home runs, 44 RBI and 19 steals coming into Sunday's game. Devensively, he has seven assists from the outfield. If elected, it would be Kemp's first All-Star selection.

One can find their way to the on-line ballot through the Dodger.com website. Voting closes out at 1 p.m. PST this Thursday.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | July 4: Coaches Nap While 'Pen Blows Game

Happy Fourth of July to all those here on Bleacher Report. Please remember the troops and all they sacrifice to ensure our safety and way of life, because without them, all the scratching and squabbling in here would become moot.

And now, for something completely different...

The manager—and more specifically, the pitching coach—of the Los Angeles Dodgers are where one should look first when directing blame for the 7-4 loss on Jul. 4 to the San Diego Padres.

The Padres are to be commended for their clutch hitting in the seventh and eighth innings—They earned this victory. Closer Heath Bell extinguished the Dodger uprising in the eighth inning and earned his 23rd save of the season in fine fashion.

But it is the drastic mismanagement of the pitching staff in those late frames which put San Diego in position to claim that victory.

It was painfully obvious that Dodger reliever Ronald Belisario did not have his good stuff today. Hey, that happens in the majors. Some days you get the bear, and other days the bear gets you.

Still, it is proper to look at pitching coach Rick Honeycutt for failing miserably in his duties by not having someone backing up Belisario right away while he struggled with his control. Given his role as manager, Joe Torre is where the buck stops on all questions of player usage.

Only 10 of Belisario's 22 pitches were strikes. He gave up three hits, hit one batter, and walked one—while retiring only one batter, who gave himself up by laying down a sacrifice bunt.

Honeycutt and Torre don't even have the excuse of needing to rest an overused bullpen, as the recently activated Claudio Vargas is waiting for his first call to the mound as a Dodger hurler. James McDonald, Jeff Weaver, and Eric Milton were also on tap and waiting in vain for an opportunity to help the team.

Instead, they turned to the teams best set-up man, Ramon Troncoso, bringing him in out of his norm—with runners on and the team trailing by multiple runs.

This is not the time to call Troncoso's number. One shouldn't waste innings and pitches by putting your best set-up man in the game under such circumstances. This is how bullpens get burned out—by erratic and improper usage.

Yes, the Dodger pitching staff is the class of the majors, ERA wise. Brain cramps—such as what was witnessed Saturday—have been a rarity, but the fact it cropped up now is still troubling.

Honeycutt was a holdover from the Grady Little days. Torre didn't want to clean out the entire staff, and didn't have a ready set pitching coach in the lines of third base coach (Bowa) and hitting coach (Mattingly) to bring along—So Honeycutt was able to retain his position.

The Dodger's current pitching coach seems to do very well when it comes to working out pitcher's mechanics and other non-game time duties. However, he remains passive when a pitcher is struggling—often letting close games get away and saddling the team with unnecessary losses.

I have previously called for a change in the position. Greg Maddux would be a fine fit for the role if he is willing to take on the position. If not, there are other alternatives in the system, including bullpen coach Ken Howell.

In spite of their glossy numbers, the pitching coach is one of the greatest weaknesses the Dodgers have. It would be quite disappointing if his timidness during game time costs the team their shot at a championship season.

Manny Flexes Muscles

In the first inning, with two out and no one on, Manny Ramirez deposited a 1-2 changeup deep into the stands in left.

It was his only hit on the day, as the two other at-bats resulted in bang-bang plays that went against the Dodgers. In the fourth, Manny was called out on a very close play at first, and in the sixth, Russell Martin was ruled out on a force play that was extremely debatable.

Juan Pierre replaced Manny in left field during the middle of the sixth inning. He laid down a fine sacrifice bunt in the eighth inning, putting runners on second and third with one out.

Wolf Wasted Once Again

Dodger starter Randy Wolf continues to see his work wasted by his teammates. Wolf gave LA six innings of effective—if not efficient—pitching, allowing only one run and four hits. He struck out eight Friars and did not issue any walks. He did scuffle a bit with his control, throwing 62 strikes out of 100 pitches.

Wolf started his 18th game on the year and retains a 3-3 record with an 3.34 ERA, averaging a touch over six innings per start. The league has hit .235 off him and Wolf's WHIP is 1.15—a very respectable number for someone looked at for middle of the rotation support.

A very professional player, Wolf would not cast any aspersions towards his teammates. Still, the fact remains that they have not supported him in the fashion they should.

Clutch Hitting - MIA

The Dodgers were a feeble 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, which pretty much sums up the weak offensive performance the put forth. One run came across thanks to a wild pitch, and another via a ground out.

Matt Kemp singled home James Loney in the ninth, which accounted for the Dodgers' final run of the contest—but it was far too little.

Russell Martin singled twice, as did Casey Blake. The only LA extra base hit was Manny's blast, as the Dodgers were able to compile a total of nine hits.

Gloves Found Wanting

The Dodger defense was found wanting as well, committing three errors. Wolf threw away a comebacker, though it did not end up costing the team on the scoreboard.

The same can not be said for errors by Blake and Juan Castro. Both contributed the the three runs San Diego put on the board in the eighth inning to ice the game.

Final Thoughts

It is hard to end up victorious when you have major malfunctions in the pitching, hitting, and fielding aspects all in the same game. The best thing about a loss like the one the Dodgers had hung around their neck Saturday is that it helps keep a team humble, and realize they need to work hard every game—no matter who is in the other dugout.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | July 3: Dodgers Dominate in Manny's Return

The Los Angeles Dodgers welcomed Manny Ramirez back into the starting lineup, at a sold-out Petco Park in San Diego.

Dodger fans made the trip south en masse, at times out-vocalizing the home town Padre fans, to welcome back their slugging outfielder from his 50-game banishment for violating baseball's PED rules.

In his first at bat, Manny drew a walk in the middle of a Dodger five-run outburst, which pretty much ended the game as soon as it started.

He grounded out in the second and fourth innings, then ended his evening after popping up to second to finish out the sixth inning.

Juan Pierre came in for Manny in the bottom of the sixth inning and made a fine catch at the wall to close out the eighth inning, robbing Adrian Gonzalez of extra bases.

Afterwards, Manny thanked the many Dodger fans who made the trip to San Diego to support him and the team.

He said he felt great and looks forward to playing in the game tomorrow afternoon, a game that will be on the FOX Network. Later, Torre confirmed Manny will be in the lineup on Saturday.

Manny praised his teammates and Pierre in particular for all the great work they continue to do, pointing to their offensive ability and professionalism.

The real star of the night was leadoff hitter Rafael Furcal, who started the game off with a line drive single. For the night, Furcal was 4-for-5 with a double and run scored. He also stole his fifth base of the season.

Strong-Arming the Friars

Dodger starter Hiroki Kuroda picked up his third win on the year, going 5.1 innings conceding four hits and three runs, all earned. He walked two and struck out two throwing 88 pitches, 56 for strikes.

Scott Hairston took him deep for the first Padre run in the fourth. Kuroda could only retire one hitter in the sixth, leaving after Gonzalez doubled home two runs.

Guillermo Mota came on to quell the uprising, then punched out two Pads in the seventh inning. He retired all five batters he faced in the game. Mota has allowed only one run in his last 18 appearances, and none in his last six.

Ramon Troncoso got the first two outs of the eighth inning before walking Hairston. Brent Leach came in to retire Gonzales and turn matters over to the Dodger closer.

Jonathan Broxton collected his 20th save, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Eight of his 10 pitches broke the 100 mph barrier on the San Diego speed gun.

Rest Does Good

Dodger catcher Russell Martin had played two innings over the last three days. The rest seemed to be positive, as he collected two singles and drove in a run in the first and another on a ground out in the third.

Up Next

The next two games will be afternoon affairs, Saturday's start time on the FOX Network at 1:10 PM Pacific and Sunday at 1:05 on KCAL Channel 9.

Saturday, the Dodgers will send Randy Wolf (3-3, 3.61) against San Diego's Josh Geer (1-3, 5.68).

On Sunday, LA's ace Chad Billingsley (9-4, 3.12) will battle Josh Banks (1-0, 3.38).

JC's Dodger Line Drives | June 30: Eric Stults Shows Up in LA Clubhouse

Injured Dodger starting pitcher Eric Stults was a pleasant surprise to find in the home-team clubhouse on Tuesday. He was just back from his appearance the night before with the Dodgers' Single-A Inland Empire 66ers squad.

Stults was happy with his most recent start, going 4.1 innings, throwing 59 pitches. He struck out three of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes while surrendering only two hits and one unearned run. Stults was not involved in the decision, a 6-5 victory by the 66ers, who scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

After the first inning, he was very pleased with his pitch location. He realizes he will need to be able to deliver at least 90 pitches before being in a position to help the big club.

The injury to his pitching thumb, which occurred while making an off-balance throw on a tapper in which he nipped the batter at first, is taking a long time to heal. The Dodger training staff has been telling Stults it will bother him for a while, but the 6'0" lefty is anxious to get back on the mound. I pointed out that he at least made the play, but hindsight led Stults to wish he hadn't tried to make that particular play, given the cost.

He realizes the Dodgers could use his help in filling out the rotation, and he's frustrated that the last bit of swelling has lingered so long.

Having injured my elbow recently and going through some of the same issues, I know the ligament injury in an often-flexed joint will linger longer since it does not get much of a chance to heal. Think how often you flex your thumb in everyday tasks; you can get a better understanding of why Stults has been sidelined for so long.

Stults indicated the problem isn't pain but the affect his thumb has on pitch location.

He also commented on the effect Manny Ramirez had on the Inland Empire players, boosting the excitement level. Looking back to when he was playing at that level, Stults remembered how any major league player sharing the minor league clubhouse, while on injury rehab, gets serious attention from the other players. They want to see how they go about their business, how it's done by the folks in the show.

JC's Dodger Dugout Whispers | June 30: Torre Tidbits

Dodger manager Joe Torre was peppered with various questions before the game against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, and Manny Ramirez was on many reporters' minds.

Torre indicated he will put Manny back in the No. 3 hole when he is activated on Friday but will keep a close eye to make sure Ramirez "has his legs under him." Joe noted Manny will have to be honest with him regarding how he is feeling, as it is important for Manny to transition back into the lineup with no setbacks.

Still, Torre's initial thought is having Manny play every day. He may have to "go get Manny in the seventh inning" in certain games. Torre also pointed out this will be a new experience for Manny, restarting his season in July.

Dodger Team in General

When asked about his team, Torre explained that, while they have been lucky in getting their share of breaks, he is not surprised how well they have played. They have played a lot of close games, been able to steal one run and go home with the victory.

Asked who was the Dodgers MVP, his reply was the bullpen. Since the team has left Florida, he has been very happy with their production.

Torre is also very pleased with the defensive performance of his squad, how they have greatly improved their infield defense. From last year, James Loney is the sole holdover as Orlando Hudson has taken over for Jeff Kent at second, Chin-Lung Hu has been supplanted by Furcal as the shortstop, and Casey Blake has been decked out in Dodger Blue for almost a full season, replacing Blake DeWitt and Nomar Garciaparra at third.

Praise for Pierre

Torre singled out Juan Pierre for his contributions to the team since Manny has been suspended. Pierre has started every game in left field after the whip came down, and has provided a spark at the top of the Dodger lineup, bringing a .300-plus average and boatloads of speed. He is second in the NL with 21 stolen bases.

Torre stressed that just because the Dodgers don't start Pierre, it doesn't mean he isn't important to the team. Torre said he looks forward to giving his other outfielders more rest, something he hasn't done as much as he might like given the team has been operating with 13 pitchers for extened periods.

Ethier Blast Analyzed

Torre talked about Andre Ethier and the pressure he puts on himself while at the plate. He noted it seems his right fielder is able to have better focus late in close or tied games. Ethier's home run in the 12th inning beat the Rockies on Monday.

Loney Lampooned

The topic switched to the strange home run totals of Ethier and Loney. Ethier has 14 home runs at home, only one on the road. On the flip side, Loney has all five homers on the road.

As if on cue, Loney walked by the group, and Torre called out to him, asking Loney if he know all his homers have been on the road. Loney's reply, "Si."

Torre laughed and said sometimes it's hard to figure Loney out, noting he was saying it with love. He then reiterated how the disparity was crazy.

Torre then discussed Loney's patience at the plate, noting how he was getting himself out more than the pitchers by pressing. Given he is hitting .277 coming into Tuesday's game, Torre expects that number to rise through the balance of the year.

Martin Takes Rest

Dodger catcher Russell Martin is going to be on the bench for the balance of the series against Colorado. Torre observed how Martin has been scuffling at the plate and is mentally tired.

Torre plans on starting A.J. Ellis on Tuesday and Brad Ausmus for the Wednesday afternoon affair. The Dodgers then have Thursday off before starting a three-game series in San Diego.

Mientkiewicz on the Mend

Injured Dodger vet Doug Mientkiewicz took some batting practice early in the afternoon on Tuesday. His return remains a question, as, while he has regained the ability to do some things, the shoulder is still giving him some trouble.

One thing for certain is how Mientkiewicz his going crazy sitting out on the DL. Said Mientkiewicz: "I feel like going postal. I feel like going Bowa."

The last comment was a loaded verbal dart, filled with equal parts venom and love, directed at the Dodgers' fiery third base coach.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | June 27: A B/R Writer's View from the Press Box

One of the worst things that can happen to a fan is to have a great seat for a bloodletting—that is when your team is the one doing the bleeding. As you can see from the above photo, I had a pretty good one for Saturday's tilt between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Seattle Mariners.

This view came from a chair in the front row of the Dodgers' press box. As the Dodgers' community leader, I was allowed the opportunity to cover the game as a member of the working media, including being on the field during batting practice and going into the clubhouse to speak with players between BP and the start of the game.

It was a fan's dream come true, but it came with a couple of strings attached. As you most likely have heard, there is no cheering in the press box. It was a surreal experience for me, someone who has been known to cheer and boo and raise a hullabaloo, having to sit though a game without letting my inner fan out to tear it up.

I was struck by the thought that this might be similar to a coroner performing an examination—a detached feeling, for me quite singular in my sporting experience. I wondered if I would be able to enjoy the event.

I can state for the record, that while atypical, it was filled with a different flavor of enjoyment—one that I look forward to repeating when the opportunity arises.

The Dodgers also enforce a media rule prohibiting the wearing of team logos, so that meant no Dodger hat, jersey or t-shirt, breaking a long streak going back to the mid-eighties, when I was gifted a ticket while at work one fine day, and had no time to get home for a wardrobe change.

Then, there was the pesky matter of Felix Hernandez dominating the Dodgers' hitters, allowing only an unearned run when Ichiro Suzuki was struck in the leg by a fly ball while being blinded by the light of the setting sun.

Hernandez worked eight strong innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out nine. Of his 117 pitches, an amazing 73 were strikes. He was credited with a wild pitch, which a few of us in the press box thought should have been a passed ball.

Dodgers' starter Eric Milton did not fair so well, conceding four runs in five innings of work. He allowed seven hits, including the ninth homer of the season off the bat of Ken Griffey Jr., while striking out seven of the free-swinging Mariners.

James McDonald tossed two scoreless innings, giving up three hits with one punchout. He threw a handful of excellent changeups and seems to have regained his command during his time in the minors.

Guillermo Mota tossed a scoreless inning in the eighth, then Brent Leach came on for the ninth, where he surrendered a blast to Russell Branyan, his 19th on the year.

The Dodgers' offense got multiple baserunners on in only three of the nine innings, breaking through in the second with two out, when Rafael Furcal singled deep into the hole at short, just beating out an excellent throw from Ronny Cedeno. Furcal would be the only player on the Dodgers with more than one hit, having served a sinker into left field for a single in the first.

Orlando Hudson followed Furcal's second knock with a perfect hit-and-run single past Cedeno as he moved in to cover second, allowing Furcal to scamper over to third and score when Casey Blake's fly ball to right found Ichiro's leg instead of glove.

Other than a two-out double by James Loney followed by a four pitch walk to Russell Martin in the ninth, the Dodgers' offense was finished for the night.

During the time before the game started, I'll admit to having a surreal sensation; I found myself wondering, "Is this really happening?"

I was able to take plenty of photos, which will be the subject of a slideshow in the very near future. While this was not the first time I had been on the Dodger Stadium field, as this photo essay documents, it was a first time when a Major League contest was about to take place, though.

I had the chance to ask Dodger manager Joe Torre about his batting order upon Manny's return, which will move current leadoff hitter Juan Pierre to the bench. His reply, "It's going to be Furcal, same as before." When I asked if there was any thought to moving Matt Kemp into the role, Torre shook his head in the negative, as in not even close.

Then there was the clubhouse visit for about 45 minutes after batting practice, then back out an hour before game time to allow the players and coaches time to prepare for the mission at hand. I spoke to a few players, received commitments for upcoming extended interviews, and saw close up some seasoned reporters plying their trade.

At any one time, only about a quarter of the players were in the clubhouse. Down the hall are the training and exercise rooms. Both are restricted to team personnel only.

One conversation I'm sure the readers would be interested about concerned former Dodger Jeff Kent and his participation in ABC's revival of "The Superstars." A member of the young guard and a well known local columnist both expressed amazement at Kent's deviation from his norm. While not going into detail, you may rest assured Mr. Kent's reputation with these gents suffered numerous punctures.

As a newcomer, some players didn't want to make eye contact. It's understandable, as the press badge I was wearing identified me as a potential enemy. Others were very cordial, answering my questions in full and in a friendly manner. Brad Ausmus, Ramon Troncoso, and Clayton Kershaw all were in the latter category.

Ausmus spoke to his appreciation of playing in Los Angeles, but not wanting to look down the road past the game of the day. He did admit to hoping to be able to remain in the game after his playing days were over, if some team would want him.

I noted that many have expressed admiration for his knowledge, and how he would be an asset for any team. His humorous response was that he hoped they were the ones doing the hiring.

Troncoso, taking a break from a handheld video game, agreed to being very comfortable in his role with the team. His 2.11 ERA, four saves, and not giving up any runs in 13 of his last 15 games all support that assertion. He was quick to credit bullpen coach Ken Howell for his aid in mental preparation while down in the pen during the game.

In response to a few questions as to his video game preferences, Troncoso indicated he liked hunting games in particular, but enjoyed a variety of types. He has a PlayStation and creates a player to use in season play in MLB 09: The Show. He gave a big smile when I asked if he enjoys hitting. Ramon also gets a kick out of FIFA Soccer, where his preferred team is AC Milan.

Kershaw was talking about hitting as I came over. His theory is to swing as hard as he can every time, because something good may happen when he connects. He also acknowledged it is his duty to get his bunts down. He was disappointed he did not do so the previous night.

The conversation moved to umpire calls, and the need for proper etiquette, particularly for younger players. He was very earnest in noting how difficult it can be to control one's body language when you disagree with a call, and how umpires have very little tolerance for those who do not. He did note the umps will allow you to question a pitch while batting, as long as you maintain proper body language and keep your head down.

When asked, Kershaw said he has never been ejected, and his tone indicated he had been brought up not to put himself in such a position. Before leaving, Clayton asked if I had any further questions, an indication of respect and quality upbringing that reflects well on his parents.

Back upstairs in the press box, situated to the left of me was the TV camera which provides the in-house feed for the Dodger Diamond Vision board. To the right were Seattle beat writers. I enjoyed a game-long conversation with a writer from Japan who has been on the Mariner beat for a while.

I asked him questions about the Mariners, he inquired about Dodger players—current and in the minors—and we discussed some general baseball topics as well. While honoring his request to remain anonymous in regards to this article, I greatly appreciate his kindness and candid observations.

I want to thank the Dodgers PR department for their willingness to work with new media. With the cutbacks in print staff, there are opportunities for those of us in the blogosphere to step forward.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | June 26: Andre Ethier's Three Blasts Bounce Seattle

After taking the last two games in Anaheim, the Los Angeles Dodgers headed out to Chicago to face the White Sox. Hiroki Kuroda dominated the South Siders in the first game, to give LA their third straight win.

Then the Sox bounced back to take the last two, giving the Dodgers their first series loss since they hosted the Angels in late May.

LA headed home to lick their wounds and prepare to face the Seattle Mariners. If they dropped the opener on Friday, it would be the first time all season the Dodgers would lose three straight games. Instead, Andre Ethier had a different threesome in mind.

Ethier cracked a 1-1 fastball deep into the right-center pavilion in the second inning with Casey Blake and James Loney on base to open the scoring on the evening off Jason Vargas.

In the sixth, with LA holding a 5-2 lead, Ethier took a 1-0 fastball from reliever Roy Corcoran into the right-center pavilion, to give the first homer some company. Russell Martin dented the plate ahead of Andre and the Dodgers were cruising 7-2.

Leading off the eighth inning against Miguel Batista, Ethier worked the count to 3-1, then hooked a deep fly into the Mariner bullpen, feasting off yet another fastball. The solo shot ended the scoring and gave Ethier his first career three-homer game. He expanded his team-leading home run total to 14.

Casey Blake also dialed deep for LA, when leading off the fourth inning, he pulled a 1-1 changeup down the left field line for his 11th tater on the year.

All this power made life easier for Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw, who leveled his record at 5-5. Kershaw went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk.

He blew away eight hitters and lowering his season ERA to 3.70 while facing 23 hitters. 64 of his 96 pitches were strikes, a very impressive effort following his excellent start last Sunday night in Anaheim.

Guillermo Mota tossed two innings, conceding nothing to the Mariner hitters while getting Wladimir Balentien looking at 96-mph fastball for his only strikeout of the game.

Ronald Belisario closed out the game, allowing a single to Jose Lopez and striking out one-time Dodger Franklin Gutierrez on a 99-mph fastball.

The victory moved the Dodgers season record to 48-26, the class of the Majors. They increased their lead against the second-place Giants to eight games, as San Francisco fell in Milwaukee 5-1.

Matt Cain allowed five runs in seven innings, suffering his second loss against nine victories this year. Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo improved to 8-4 and gave up only a first-inning shot to Pablo Sandoval.

Lakers Love Clayton

World Champion Los Angeles Laker center-forward Pau Gasol attended the game, tossing out the opening pitch in pre-game ceremonies.

Last Sunday, Kobe Bryant took in the Dodger-Angel game in Anaheim started by Kershaw, sitting behind the Dodger dugout.

While standing on the rubber, Gasol tossed a tall pitch in to Brad Ausmus, who looked to be happy he did not need to fight for rebounding position to collect the ball.

Kemp Racks Three

Along with Ethier, Dodger centerfielder Matt Kemp enjoyed a three-hit night. His triple leading off the fifth inning was cashed in on a single by Kershaw, his first RBI on the season.

Praise for Beltre

During the fourth inning of the game, Dodger Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully commented on former Dodger Adrian Beltre and his fielding prowess.

Scully tossed out a laurel for Beltre, how was the best third baseman ever when it came to charging in to field and throw out a hitter on a swinging bunt. I have no desire to challenge Scully's opinion on the topic.

LA, No. 1 Pick Agree To Terms

Aaron Miller and the Dodgers have agreed on an amount for the signing bonus, a figure just under $900,000. Miller must next pass a physical before the deal can be finalized.

Up Next

The second game of the Dodger-Mariner series takes place Saturday night with Eric Milton (2-0, 2.89) returning to the wars and facing Felix Hernandez (7-3, 2.74). Your intrepid reporter will be attending the game, which begins at 7:10 P.M. Pacific.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | June 21: LA Knocks the Devil Out of Anaheim's Angels

Payback was the order of the weekend as the Los Angeles Dodgers traveled to Anaheim to face the last team to win a series from them, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim—who feel the need to carry the LA brand, even though they aren't in the same county, much less city.

The Dodgers won the last two games of the series after blowing a 4-1 lead in the opener, to level the 2009 Freeway Series at three games apiece. That will be the final total for this season, unless the teams were to meet again in the Fall Classic.

Los Angeles (the real ones) pushed their record to 46-24, a season high 22 games above .500, retain their three and one-half game advantage over Boston for the best record in the Majors, and eight game advantage over second place San Francisco in the National League West.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles/Anaheim (the artificial ones) saw their record dip to 36-31 and remain one-half game behind Texas for the American League Western lead.

A small measure of payback was also applied on behalf of the Dodgers manager Joe Torre, who has been tortured by the Angels and their manager, long time Dodger catcher Mike Scioscia, who's Anaheim-based club was the only one to hold an advantage over the Torre era Yankee teams.

In a series where the first game was decided by a single run and the balance were decided by two runs each, coming through in the clutch is key. The Dodgers were 8-for-30 with runners in scoring position and stranded 28 runners. Meanwhile, the Angels went 6-for-29 and left 23 runners over the weekend.

The Dodgers racked up a total of 33 hits, 12 each in the last two games. Power-wise, they cracked four homers, two by James Loney to double his season total, one by Rafael Furcal, and Russell Martin finally opened his account for the season by hitting his first. Orlando Hudson and Juan Pierre each stroked two doubles in one game—Hudson on Friday and Pierre on Sunday—and Andre Ethier belted his first triple of the season on Saturday.

The Angels collected 24 hits, eight each game of the series. They drilled three home runs, Juan Rivera's game winner on Friday while Kendry Morales and Gary Matthews Jr. both went deep on Saturday. Morales, Chone Figgins, and Torii Hunter each collected a double over the weekend while Figgins tripled for the fourth time this season Saturday.

Dodger hitters struck out 21 times while garnering 14 walks, the Angels were punched out 22 times and drew 15 passes. Defensively, the Dodgers committed one error in each game while the Angels went the whole weekend without a fielding miscue.

Friday June 19 - Angels 5 Dodgers 4

Dodger ace Chad Billingsley faced the Angels Joe Saunders in the opening tilt. The Blue Crew were able to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Halos came back to tie the game on a bases-loaded single by Maicer Izturis and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mike Napoli.

The Dodgers opened the scoring when Casey Blake drew a bases loaded walk in the third inning. After the Angels had tied the contest in the bottom of the third on a Vlad Guerrero single cashing in Figgins, Loney drilled a homer to right in the fourth to give the Blue Crew the lead right back.

Furcal pulled a change up into the seats by the left field foul pole to expand the Dodger lead in the fifth, a blast that picked up Pierre along the way.

Rivera drilled his 10th homer of the season to provide the Angels with their winning tally, a drive off Guillermo Mota in the eighth inning. It was the first run surrendered by Mota in his last 12.1 innings, a span of 11 games.

The Angel bullpen held the Dodgers scoreless, despite LA loading the bases in the eighth and getting two more runners on in the ninth. Brian Fuentes struck out Matt Kemp to collect his 19th save on the year.

Saturday June 20 - Dodgers 6 Angels 4

The Dodgers Jeff Weaver faced off against his younger brother Jered in this game, the eighth set of brothers to have started a Major League game against each other, 21 times in total.

The Niekro's, Phil and Joe, have squared off the most—nine times. Greg and Mike Maddux faced each other twice. The balance have been one-time affairs, save back in the 20's when Jess and Virgil Barnes matched up five times in three years.

The last time brothers clashed on the mound was in 2002, when Andy Benes got the better of his younger brother Alan as the St. Louis Cardinals thumped the Chicago Cubs 11-2. Prior to that, the Dodgers Ramon Martinez edged his younger brother Pedro and his Expos 2-1 in 1996.

The home team jumped out to an early lead, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Bobby Abreu singled home Figgins in the first and Morales took Jeff Weaver deep to right in the second.

The visitors tied it in the third with the first home run of the season by Martin, who collected three hits on the day, and a sacrifice fly from Hudson that chased home Pierre. The Blue Crew took the lead for good in the fifth, with the aid of a Casey Blake single for one and Ethier's triple for two more.

The Halo's Kevin Jepsen gifted the Dodgers one more run in the sixth on a wild pitch and almost a second, with Kemp being nipped at home after another pitch got away from catcher Jeff Mathis, but not quite far enough as his throw to Jepsen was just in time to get Kemp.

Anaheim's locals scratched back on the power of a pinch-hit two-run homer off the bat of Matthews, but Jonathan Broxton was able to seal the victory by retiring Erick Aybar on a bouncer to Hudson.

With Jeff taking the victory over Jered in the battle of the Weaver's, older brothers have defeated their younger siblings 12 out of 21 times.

Thanks to MLB.com for the historical sibling information and PJ Ross for the signpost.

Sunday June 21 - Dodgers 5 Angels 3

Father's Day in Anaheim with the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball crew televising the contest, what an excellent opportunity for the Dodgers to make another statement to the baseball nation as to the quality of their ballclub.

This was the third time this season the Dodgers have appeared on ESPN's Sunday Night edition, winning 8-2 against the Cubs in Chicago on May 31st and falling at home to the Phillies 7-2 the following week.

With this victory, the Dodgers were able to level their record on Father's Day for the decade at 5-5, and 2-2 against the Angels during that time frame.

Torre sent young Texas bred lefty Clayton Kershaw to the mound against the Angels ace righty John Lackey, who also carries a Texas brand though from a vintage 10 years earlier. Kershaw was able to earn his first win in four starts while Lackey has been saddled with three losses in his last five outings.

Each pitcher struck out five and walked four. The difference being Kershaw did not allow any runs in his seven innings of work, an outing that tied his career high for innings pitched, while Lackey was touched for four runs in eight innings.

The Blue Crew opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning, as Pierre pulled a fastball into the right field corner to plate Kemp.

In the bottom of the frame, Kershaw displayed a great Houdini impersonation, getting out of a bases loaded, no out jam by inducing Abreu to tap back to him, starting a home to first double play. Hunter popped up to Furcal ending their chance to score.

The Dodgers doubled their lead in the seventh as Pierre doubled again to drive in Kemp, this time on a fly ball over the head of left fielder Rivera. Pierre was nabbed at third in an unsuccessful attempt to stretch the hit into a triple.

LA came back with two more runs in the eighth frame, on the power of Loney's fourth homer of the season. The play was subjected to review by instant replay, given the absurd way Anaheim has their right field wall—a 18 foot barrier with an electronic scoreboard face.

The top of the wall does not have a yellow stripe, just a metallic top up against unpainted concrete and a dark green railing. It is as if they are intentionally trying to create controversy and make the umpires job more difficult.

If the commissioner would actually properly administer the game instead of glad-handing every dollar possible, he would direct the Angels to correct this situation, either with a distinctive yellow stripe or the installation of a basket along the lines of what was put into Wrigley Field.

Broxton was summoned by Torre in the eighth inning to quell an Angel uprising, with one run in, the tying run at the plate, and rally monkeys hopping all over the joint. After walking Matthews on a full count, Broxton smoked Aybar on five fastballs on the outside half then punched his ticket on a foul tip off an inside slider.

Blake singled in the top of the ninth to cash in Pierre, a run that was useful as Broxton surrendered two runs on three hits in the bottom of the ninth before inducing a grounder from Napoli to end the game, cage the rally monkeys, and collect his 17th save on the season.

Manny Update

Manny Ramirez is scheduled to report to the Dodgers Triple-A farm team on Tuesday to begin his 10 game maximum stint, gearing up to return to the Dodgers after his 50-game suspension has concluded.

The plan is for him to play at Albuquerque for a few days, while they host Nashville from Tuesday through Friday. Manny will then go to San Bernardino and join the Single-A Inland Empire 66ers for a few games before rejoining the Dodgers.

Of course, Manny is Manny and this is subject to change, so caution is urged before buying tickets in expectation of seeing him in either minor league park.

Hurray for Hollywood

Saturday marked the one year anniversary of the Los Angeles Dodgers receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The star is located in front of the Kodak Theater at 6801 Hollywood Blvd, near Highland.

Playing Catch with Dad

The Dodgers opened up the stadium playing field to anyone who wanted to come out and toss a ball around on Sunday. This is the sixth time they have invited families to come and enjoy themselves playing catch on the most magnificent piece of real estate in Southern California.

Gates opened at 10 A.M. and the event lasted three hours. Former Dodger players such as Tommy Davis, "Sweet Lou" Johnson, and Bobby Castillo were on hand for autographs.

Unfazed Blue Crew

The Dodgers were leading Major League Baseball with a 20-7 record when the team was shaken to it's core by the news of Manny Ramirez's suspension on May 7. Behind the veteran leadership of Pierre, Hudson and Blake, the Blue Crew have continued their winning ways after the loss of Manny's services.

Since the time of the suspension, the Dodgers are 25-16, which ties them with the Boston Red Sox for the best mark in the Majors since May 7.

Kershaw Shackles Batters

Coming into Sunday's game, the league was hitting only .217 against Clayton Kershaw, which was good for third best in the National League. He was able to lower that average to .213 after allowing only four hits while facing 29 batters against the Angels.

Powerpoint Demonstration

With Loney's blast in the seventh inning on Sunday, the Dodgers have hit 51 home runs on the season while surrendering 48. While the Dodgers homer total is only 13th in the National League and 27th overall in the Majors, their batting average of .279 leads the NL and is second over all, trailing only the .280 clip of the Angels.

As far as taters surrendered, the Dodgers have the second fewest in both the National League and the Majors, behind the Atlanta Braves who have allowed 45 long balls. However, the Dodger team ERA of 3.56 leads all of baseball.

Thus the current formula reads: best ERA plus 2nd best batting average equals the most wins in baseball.

One Champ Sizing Up Some Contenders

In the front row behind the Dodger dugout Sunday was the freshly minted NBA playoff MVP of the 15 time NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant.

ESPN made sure to provide their audience plenty of shots of Nike's pride and joy, sans that hideous puppet paw shirt he wore during the parade to the Coliseum on Wednesday.

Up Next

After a day off Monday, the Dodgers fly to Chicago and head to the South Side to face the White Sox for a three game set. This will be the second time the Dodgers visit the Sox in interleague play, with the Dodger record standing at 0-3 at U.S. Cellular Field. LA is 2-4 against the White Sox at Dodger Stadium.

Tuesday, the Dodgers will send Hiroki Kuroda (1-3, 3.86) out to face John Danks (5-5, 4.48) with a game time of 5:11 P.M. in Los Angeles carried on KCAL Channel 9.

Wednesday will see Randy Wolf (3-2, 3.29) going against Gavin Floyd (4-5, 4.65) with the same start time, shown in LA on Prime Ticket.

The series concludes Thursday afternoon when Chad Billingsley (9-3, 2.83) faces Clayton Richard (2-1, 4.03) at 11:05 A.M also on Prime Ticket.

Vin Scully will enjoy almost a week off, returning to the airwaves Friday when the Seattle Mariners visit Dodger Stadium. Eric Collins and Steve Lyons will be at the mic for the series in Chicago.

Hopefully there will not be another episode where they blatantly stomp on baseball tradition by continually saying the words "no-hitter" while one is in process.

JC's Dodger Snapshots | June 15: Under the Lights in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Dodgers have held a few of these events in the past, where fans can hit in the batting cage, pitch from the bullpen, field grounders and fly balls, and take a behind the scenes look at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers allowed me, as Bleacher Report's community leader, access to the most recent event. I was joined by Cathy "Cat" deLeon, the sister of my good friend Dr. D, who contributed some of these photos.

JC's Dodger Snapshots | June 6: Maury Wills Steals Again

It is now my habit to take a camera along when going to visit the most beautiful piece of real estate in all of California - Dodger Stadium. I have been able to take some fairly nice shots over the years, and am happy to share some of the photos I take this year with my fellow Bleacher Report members, particularly for Dodger fans who have not had the chance to visit the home of the Dodgers in person.

Saturday June 6th was a very nice day for Dodger fans at the Stadium. They saw some very nice pitching from returning ace Hiroki Kuroda...

JC's Dodger Line Drives | June 9: Ethier Powers LA Past San Diego

Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends...

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who enjoyed a well deserved day off Monday after playing 17 straight days, pulled out the big lumber to club the San Diego Padres into submission on Tuesday.

Andre Ethier pounded out two homers, with Matt Kemp and Orlando Hudson chipping in one each, allowing Dodgers' ace starter Chad Billingsley to move his season record to 8-3.

Four members of the bullpen toiled three-and-a-third innings to preserve the Dodgers' ninth win in their last 10 home games against the Friars.

Andre The Colossus

Ethier broke the tie for team home run leadership with Casey Blake by touching Padre starter Chris Young twice.

The first was a towering shot down the right field line that just stayed fair, while the second one was a no-doubter that landed about a third of the way up the right field pavilion.

Please note for the record this reporter will not sully Andre's reputation by referring to him with that cursed "g" word.

More From The Hit List

Kemp and Hudson flexed their muscles as well against the beleaguered Young in the fifth inning.

Kemp led off the inning by hitting the first offering from Young over the wall in left. After two outs, Hudson smoked a full count fastball deep to right-center.

Kemp's was his seventh of the season while O-Dog went yard for the fourth time.

Billingsley Bits

Chad started out rather shaky, allowing three consecutive hits to open the game.

Tony Gwynn getting shot down at third helped, as did Adrian Gonzales striking out on a fastball at his eyes. Kevin Kouzmanoff fought off an inside fastball to single home the first two runs of the game before Bills would end the Dodger fans' early misery by striking out Chase Headley looking.

This was another less than dominating effort from Billingsley, turning in five and one third innings, surrendering three runs (all earned), eight hits, and two walks. He struck out five, throwing 74 strikes on 117 total pitches.

In addition to running his season record to 8-3, this win moved Billingsley's career record against San Diego to 8-3—a nice touch of symmetry.

Leach Applications

In the sixth inning with two out and one on, Dodgers' manager Joe Torre called in Brent Leach to relieve Billingsley and face Padre pinch-hitter Will Venable. One pitch later, Venable had grounded into a bang-bang force play at second, with Hudson taking a toss from shortstop Rafael Furcal and just beating Nick Hundley to the keystone.

The previous day, Leach and his wife Sara hosted 34 youngsters on a half-day fishing trip. This is the third year the Dodgers have teamed up with the Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation to give some inner-city kids the opportunity to experience the pleasure of fishing on the Pacific Ocean.

Previously, Brad Penny had hosted the outing.

Balance Of The Pen

After Leach, Torre continued draining Padre blood, calling on Ronald Belisario, Ramon Troncoso, and Jonathan Broxton to seal the victory.

Belisario pitched a perfect seventh, Troncoso worked out of a two-on, one-out jam by inducing a double play grounder out of former Dodger catcher Henry Blanco, while closer Broxton ran into a spot of trouble in the ninth.

With two out, Gwynn worked a walk and advanced to second on the accursed "fielder indifference," where he was cashed in on a single from David Eckstein. Broxton crushed Padre hopes of a comeback by striking out Brian Giles looking for his second whiff of the inning, leaving Adrian Gonzalez, the majors' top home run hitter on deck with nothing to do but turn and walk into the clubhouse.

Manny Speaks

Suspended Dodger outfielder Manny Ramirez spoke briefly with the media. In an unscheduled event, Ramirez gave his point of view publicly for the first time.

His comments come direct from the Dodgers' Web site.

"That's in the past," Ramirez said. "Whatever happened, that's in the past. I'm coming to play my game and move on. What happened, happened. I spoke to [owner] Frank McCourt, I apologized, I spoke to [manager] Joe Torre, my teammates and I'm ready to move on. I didn't kill nobody, I didn't rape nobody. That's it."

One can feel confident the reporters who cover the team will continue to pick away at Manny over the next month or so, looking for more nuggets of information as to the what, where, why, and how on this topic.

Dodgers' Top Selection A Lefty

With the 36th pick, the Dodgers tabbed a two-way player from Baylor, Aaron Miller. The team is looking at Miller to be a starting pitcher. Standing 6' 3", 205 pounds, the 21-year-old junior is a high school friend of Dodger starter Clayton Kershaw.

Three years ago, Miller was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 11th round, but spurrned their offer to be able to experience college life. Last year with Baylor, Miller went 3-3 and recorded a 5.12 ERA over 51 innings in 13 games, collecting 65 strikeouts along the way.

With the bat, he hit .310, drilled 12 homers with 47 RBI in 186 at-bats.

The Dodgers originally held the 16th overall pick, which was forfeited to the Arizona Diamondbacks for signing Orlando Hudson as a free agent, an exchange that is looking better all the time.

Logan White, the Dodgers' assistant general manager of scouting and the man in charge of the draft, has selected a pitcher with the first pick seven years in a row. The last non-pitcher drafted hangs out at first base and goes by the name of James Loney.

Miller indicated he looks forward to signing quickly as to "get innings under my belt," which would indicate Miller is not represented by Lucifer Boras.

The Prince Of Lies is sharpening his pitchfork to skewer the Washington Nationals, who selected San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg with the first pick of the draft.

As if the Nationals didn't have enough trouble, currently.

Thanks to Emerson, Lake & Palmer for the continued enjoyment of their work, particularly "Karn Evil 9" from the Brain Salad Surgery LP.

Manny Ramirez and the All-Star Game: A Bleacher Report Perspective

While sitting on top of the National League West, the National League, and all of Major League Baseball with a record of 35-17, there are many questions that continue to be asked of the Los Angeles Dodgers and their fans.

One of these is in regards to the All-Star eligibility of suspended outfielder Manny Ramirez. This is a question with various layers; a question that's not as simple as some would like it to be.

Manny’s suspension extends to July 3, assuming no games are postponed. The All-Star Game will be played on July 14 in St. Louis. Thus, Manny will be eligible to be on the Dodgers active roster before the All-Star Game rolls around.

While considering this question, it is possible for me to answer "yes," "no," and "maybe"—depending on what element one considers being the most important aspect in this equation.

If one believes using steroids to be cheating, worthy of punishment as well as the denial of accolades, then the answer is obviously "no." It is a simple black and white situation.

The only problem is Major League Baseball has no such rule in place to legally prevent Manny or any other player from being held out of the All-Star Game for steroid usage suspension.

If one holds to the theory an All-Star Game starting spot is awarded in consideration to how the players have performed in the current season only, the results are mixed.

Manny has played 27 games this season; his average is .348 with a slugging percentage of .641 and an on-base-plus-slugging mark of 1.133. He has six home runs and 20 RBI in 92 at-bats, drawing 26 walks while striking out 17 times.

These can not be considered bad numbers, but do not represent the number of opportunities afforded a healthy starting field player. The All-Star Game has seen many starters with sub-.250 averages, even a few that dip below the Mendoza line. The reason this exists dovetails nicely into the final major factor.

Many votes cast for All-Stars are cumulative over the career of a player, particularly for the exploits from the previous season or two. Manny is one of the best players in the game, particularly while at the plate. His career numbers are Hall of Fame-worthy, if not slightly tainted by this current trouble.

The value of 533 homers, 1,745 RBI, .315 average, .594 slugging can not be ignored; particularly since baseball’s commissioner decided to turn an exhibition game into the determination for home field in the World Series.

While the wisdom of this decision is highly debatable, the fact it is in place makes a strong argument for finding room for such a devastating bat.

I decided to survey 30 of Bleacher Report’s more knowledgeable baseball fans to gauge their reaction to the question of Manny as an All-Star. I had expected a strong negative reaction and was surprised to see the response was almost even, with the denial of eligibly side taking it by three votes.

I asked Dodger fans, Giant fans, and Red Sox fans, as well as fans of various other teams, in an effort to get a more rounded point of view.

From the cheaters shouldn’t prosper camp comes the following: Reds fan and baseball historian Cliff Eastham said, “I say disqualify them and if he should win, the runner-up should start…His refusal to protest pretty well tells the tale.”

Chicago Cubs community leader Bob Warja contributed, “He is a cheater who does not deserve to represent the game of baseball, especially on such a grand stage.”

Eloquent Dodger fan Leroy Watson observed, “It’s so clear to me that he doesn’t belong...sending a player to the All-Star Game is a reward for excellence, for playing by the rules. Don’t we think its one hell of a mixed signal to combine the two?”

Noted chef and Bleacher savant L.J. Burgess caps off this section by saying, “From the heart...he's a cheater...and the odds are that he's been a cheater for a looong time. I despise cheaters in Baseball”

Now for a few words from the folks who believe strongly how the starting lineup should be a reward for the current season only: Leading off with kensai, of firenedcollettinow.com, who checked in with a couple of salient points, “1) he doesn't deserve it based on his performance 2) he should concentrate on keeping in shape instead of playing and making it a media nightmare.”

Tiger and Cub fan Paul Swaney represents for the Midwest, “It bothers me that he is currently fourth in voting for NL outfielders, but it also shows just how numb people have gotten to the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs...would love to see him decline the offer...he'll earn my forgiveness.”

Loyal Yankee fan Marisa Scolamiero offered, “Despite the whole steroid thing I don't think he should get voted to the team because he hasn't put up numbers this season worthy of being selected to the game. Manny typically gets voted in and then comes up with some bogus reason about why he can't attend so he really doesn't deserve the vote.”

Mets fan and noted Shrek double Richard Marsh chimed in, “Since Manny missed most of the first half I don't think he is deserving...I realize that the all star game became a popularity contest and now with Internet voting it will certainly get out of hand. Florida voting machines have nothing on the MLB.”

Now for a word from those who think Manny should not be prohibited from playing. Starting with one of Bleacher Reports' top editors and Boston stalwart Tim Coughlin, “...it's about time the system changed so that the official ballot can adapt (after the season begins) to be more accurate...but if people vote for him and he's not suspended when the game takes place, he should be eligible...I think the onus is on the voters to vote for other players. That's the only way to send the right message.”

Giant fan Andrew, after taking his customary shot at Dodger fans, accurately pointed out, “It'll emphasize how ridiculous the claims by Selig are that they're seriously addressing the issue...why wasn't one of the first moves to invalidate for all chances at major awards/honors for those players who test positive? "This loophole shows they aren't being proactive, which is HEAVY indication the only problem MLB powers-that-be see is one of public perception. NOT one of substance abuse.”

University professor and admitted baseball addict Strike 3 observed, “He is clearly one of the most talented and exciting players in the league. The All Star game allows me to vote for the players I am most interested in watching, and he belongs on that list. Having him in the game would also make for great drama.”

Writer and radio host Patrick Mauro gets the last word in this segment, “The All-Star Game belongs to the fans. If he's voted as starter, he should start. Especially considering his suspension will be done with...If the fans want him, MLB has no right to prevent Manny from being a part of it.”

I want to thank all these folks for their wonderful comments, along with the other Bleacher Creatures who contributed their opinions to the survey.

Now, I’ll close with my final word on the subject. Manny should be eligible, but, if elected, should have Juan Pierre replace him in the starting lineup, just as Pierre has done for the Dodgers after the suspension came down.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | May 20: Los Angeles Brooms New York Out of Town

Distracted by the suspension of Manny Ramirez the last time they were at home, the Los Angeles Dodgers returned to their dominating ways at Chavez Ravine against the New York Mets.

The Mets came to town on a roll, having won 11 of their last 14 games. They leave having dropped both their last four games and out of first place in the NL East. In searching for their greatest enemy, all they would need is a mirror.

In each outing of this three game set, the Dodgers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, only to have the Mets come back to tie or take the lead. However, New York could not finish any game still holding a lead.

Neither team proved to be an offensive juggernaut, nor even clutch in this series. New York collected only four hits in 27 at-bats with runners in scoring position and stranded 26 baserunners. Los Angeles went 4-for-30 while stranding 28 runners.

The Mets collected five extra base hits all series, all of them doubles—two by David Wright in the opener and two more by Carlos Beltran in the last. Of course, a triple was downgraded to a single in the first game as well. Meanwhile, the Dodgers secured only three extra base hits all series, two doubles and a home run.

May 18: Dodgers 3, Mets 2 (11 innings)

New York commits five errors with their leather and a major one with their feet to gift-wrap an early Christmas present for Los Angeles.

While I can't say I've never seen such an inept performance before, this type of effort is usually left for beer-league softball games.

As our old pitching ace Pat "The Wizard" McCormick—a dead ringer for the late Rod Beck—would say when the Brewers (named more for consumption than production) would have their struggles in Pasadena or Alhambra, "Someone throw a tent over this circus."

The Dodgers tallied twice in the first inning, but could have scored more off Met starter Tim Redding, who was making his first appearance of the season. Their offense then dozed off and on over the next nine innings, until Met ineptitude allowed them to finally go home and crawl into bed.

The Mets bounced back in the second, cashing in Wright's double to half the Los Angeles lead on an infield ground out by former Dodger Ramon Martinez, who was also making his season debut after being recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. This would prove to be Martinez's offensive highlight for the series, as he went 0-for-12 with three strikeouts.

After a lot of ducking and weaving by Dodger starter Randy Wolf, New York was able to push across the tying run in the eight on a slow thousand-hop ground single deep in the hole between first and second by another former Dodger, Gary Sheffield. Angel Pagan dented the plate to level the score.

Dodger reliever Ramon Troncoso was able to wriggle out of trouble in the 10th inning, stranding two runners. After recording two outs to start the 11th, he surrendered a single to Ryan Church. Angel Pagan smoked a drive to the wall in the right-center gap and Church rambled across the plate to give the Mets the lead. Or did he?

The Dodgers appealed the play, with Mark Loretta stepping on the third base bag occupied by Pagan, who was stunned when third base umpire Mike DiMuro signaled out. The call was made on Church, who rounded third awkwardly and missed touching the bag. Troncoso and Los Angeles had escaped without allowing a run.

Loretta led off the bottom of the 11th and drew a walk. Xavier Paul lifted a fly ball to left-center and Mets left fielder Pagan and center fielder Beltran could not decide who should catch the ball. So, neither did. Loretta scampered to third and Paul pulled into second on the error charged to Beltran.

Juan Pierre was walked intentionally. Given he is blazing hot with the bat—hitting over .400—and doing so will create a force play at the plate, that decision was fairly easy to make. Rafael Furcal lifting a fly ball to left, too shallow to bring in Loretta, made the strategy look good. An easy grounder to first by Orlando Hudson made it look even better.

However, the throw home by first baseman Jeremy Reed was well wide of the plate, and instead of a force with the chance to turn a double play, Loretta strode across the plate securing a victory for the Dodgers. The stunned Mets were left to slink off the field while Los Angeles celebrated their good fortune.

May 19: Dodgers 5, Mets 3

Dodger ace Chad Billingsley turned in a rare poor performance, immediately giving back an early lead, loading the bases on three walks and a wild pitch before seeing two come home on a single by Mets pitcher John Maine. New York scored another run in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

For the game, Billingsley allowed three runs on four hits and five walks. He struck out seven in six and one-third innings of work.

The first Dodger run was scored by Pierre, who's fly ball was whiffed by left fielder Daniel Murphy. Hudson brought him home with a single to center, but the inning was short circuited due to Andre Either's double play grounder.

Los Angeles fought back in the fourth when Casey Blake's two-out single was cashed in on a double by Billingsley, who also walked and singled in the game.

The sixth inning saw the Dodgers turn the tables on the Mets, as James Loney and Matt Kemp scored when Blake deposited a 1-0 changeup from Maine into the left field pavilion. Los Angeles now led 5-3 and only goose eggs would follow.

Brent Leach and Belisario would aid Billingsley in the seventh, then Corey Wade handled the eighth and Jonathan Broxton closed out the ninth to give Los Angeles their second win in two chances against New York. Billingsley's record moved to 6-1 while Maine's leveled at 3-3.

May 20: Dodgers 2, Mets 1

Trying to avoid a sweep, New York sent Livan Hernandez to the mound to face Jeff Weaver, who came out of the bullpen to make this start in place of the injured Eric Stults, who suffered a sprained pitching thumb in his previous outing while fielding a little tapper back to the mound.

Pierre scored a first inning run for the fifth concecutive day, coming home on a sacrifice fly by Either. For the series, Pierre was 3-for-10 scoring three runs and drawing seven walks.

He is hitting .407 with a .479 on base percentage and 1.003 OPS (on base plus slugging percentage). The OPS is third on the team, behind only Manny and seldom used infielder Juan Castro.

This would prove to be the only run Hernandez would allow in his seven innings of work. Weaver would go five innings and surrender a run in the third, when Beltran doubled home Luis Castillo. Beltran would collect another double and draw a walk on the evening to pace the Met offense.

This game would go to the bottom of the eighth tied where Hudson picked up a one out single. Ethier followed with a walk to move the O-Dog to second and he would scamper home on a single through the 5.5 hole by Russell Martin.

That would prove to be enough, as Broxton came on to earn his second save in as many nights, stranding Pagan on second when he retired Ramon Martinez (remember Ramon from the first game?) on a chopper to third baseman Blake.

Odds and Ends

The win moved Los Angeles to 29-13 on the season and increase their lead over second place San Francisco to eight and one-half games. The Mets fell to 21-19 and are in second, one game behind the Philadelphia Phillies.

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes left the final game in the fourth inning after re-aggravating his right calf muscle. He may be heading to the disabled list, where the Mets had earlier in the day placed infielder Alex Cora. First baseman Carlos Delgado is also there, most likely for another 10 weeks due to a torn labrum in hip.

The Dodgers pitching staff held the Mets hitters without a home run through the series. The Mets have now gone 69 innings since their last big fly, in the eighth inning on May 13 by Sheffield against Atlanta.

Dodger rookie pitcher Leach earned his first major league victory in game three of the series. He has thrown four and one-third innings over seven contests, allowing runs in only two games, while striking out five and walking two.

Troncoso has lowered his ERA to 1.69. He is 1-0 in 16 games and has worked 26.2 innings, allowing 22 hits while conceding only four walks. He has 14 punchouts and converted both of his save opportunities.

Another Dodger rookie hurler, who made the roster in a surprise out of spring training, Ronald Belisario continues to provide Los Angeles with another strong option out of the bullpen. Belisario is 1-2 on the season with a 2.70 ERA.

He has been called on by Joe Torre 21 times and pitched 23.1 innings, surrendering 19 hits and 11 walks while striking out 23.

Up Next

The Dodgers have Thursday off, then the Angels, who think they are from Los Angeles, actually visit the city for the first time to face the hometown Dodgers.

Friday, Angel manager Mike Scioscia will send Jered Weaver (3-2, 2.59) out to face Clayton Kershaw (2-3, 4.60) in Kershaw's first outing since he flirted with a no-hitter. Want to give thanks to all the Bleacher denizens who were kind enough to comment on my previous article regarding the broadcast of that game.

Saturday features the Angels' John Lackey (1-0, 9.00) against Randy Wolf (2-1, 2.72). On Sunday afternoon, Matt Palmer (5-0, 4.26) takes the hill for the Angels, where he will be opposed by Dodger ace Chad Billingsley (6-1, 2.51)

The first two games begin at 7:10 p.m. PT, while Sunday will start at 1:10 p.m. PT. Fridays game will be broadcast on KCAL Ch. 9 in Los Angeles while the weekend games will be on Prime Ticket.

Why the Los Angeles Dodgers' TV Announcers Should Be Fired Immediately

First of all, calm yourselves. I am in no way speaking of Hall of Famer Vin Scully.

Instead, while Vin was enjoying the last day of a week long vacation while the team was on the road in the East, new Dodger broadcaster Eric Collins and commentator Steve Lyons (pictured above) provided the play-by-play of today’s Dodgers/Marlins game on Channel 9 in Los Angeles.

Sunday, Dodger manager Joe Torre sent Clayton Kershaw to the mound to face the Fish.

For seven innings, Kershaw allowed no hits.

Now, baseball is a game of superstitions. A couple of the most important involve pitchers going for no-hitters. Teammates leave the pitcher alone, don't sit near him and absolutely never mention what is in the process of taking place. The last element, especially, extends to the announcing booth as well.

Yet Lyons, who bloody well should know better as a former player, started mentioning "no-hitter" in the sixth inning.

His broadcasting partner Collins held off until the eighth, when the broadcast director and producer decided it was proper to show a clip from Hideo Nomo's masterpiece at Coor's Field in 1996 before Kershaw could throw his first pitch of the inning.

Sure enough, leading off the bottom of the eighth, former Dodger Cody Ross drilled a double into the left-center field gap and Kershaw's perfecto went up in smoke.

Currently, there is a lot of banter going on in Washington over our President, Congress, the CIA, and enhanced interrogation techniques such as waterboarding. I submit that this practice is far too mild for the likes of this crime against baseball.

As an old school type of guy, I would prefer to see those responsible for this heresy strung up by their thumbs and horsewhipped. A large cauldron filled with bubbling wax should be employed as well. Just contact the prop master from "The Addams Family" to borrow a rack and iron maiden.

Better yet, string them up like piñatas, give fans a bat and let them take a few swings. Ten bucks for three swings, with the proceeds to go to the Dodgers Dream Foundation.

The traditions of the sport need to be respected, if the people responsible bringing the game into our homes via television can't keep to the code, they must be replaced with those who know which end is up posthaste.

For those who think this should be labeled as humor, you are sadly mistaken. These crimes must be punished severely.

Manny Takes 50 Off: Flat Tire or Train Wreck for the Dodgers?

As the dust starts to settle from the Manny Ramirez suspension bombshell, the Los Angeles Dodgers and their fans can begin to properly take inventory of the damage and accompanying fallout.

It is sensible to start this assessment where most pertinent—in the Dodger clubhouse, the dugout, and on the field. Upon his arrival, Ramirez became the face of the franchise. His fun-loving personality transformed the clubhouse from an uneasy mix of crotchety veterans and nervous kids into a cohesive unit that became the champions of the NL West.

Music returned to the clubhouse, via Manny's iPod. The refresher course he taught emphasized baseball as a game that should be fun, something the balance of the squad once knew but had forgotten.

Now we will see how much of the lesson is retained by the 24 remaining players. Professional athletes know rosters are consistently in flux due to many reasons: trades, demotions/promotions, injuries, and suspensions. The particular cause is irrelevant; the fact he is gone must be dealt with and adjustments must be made.

Juan Pierre takes over in left field. He has been a Major League starter for years, so his return to every day duty will not be a problem. If the Dodgers were trying to insert a rookie just called up, the story would be quite different.

Pierre's skill set is different from Manny, so the middle of the order will need to pick up the slack in the power department. Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, James Loney, and Russell Martin—this means you. It's time to grow up and take responsibility for the team.

There are still veterans like Casey Blake, Orlando Hudson, and Rafael Furcal to keep things stabilized as the Dodger's ship rides through the more vicious storm swells. They know things could be far worse and this team still has enough components to emerge victorious in the West.

Players should treat this absence as if he was injured, only without the open end return date. In fact, this will provide ample time for Manny's injured hamstring to completely heal.

With Joe Torre at the helm, the Dodgers have a stable hand at the wheel. He knew not to get overly excited with the earlier win streak, having been there before with the previous record holders in Atlanta, yet still find himself sitting on the outside looking in come playoff time. His battle scars from the Bronx Zoo are barely itching in comparison to the current plight.

In the front office, GM Ned Colletti knows any attempt to bring in reinforcements would be prohibitively expensive, as the potential trading partners will try to extract two pounds of flesh instead of the standard one. The bench previously constructed is solid enough to weather this particular predicament.

Brad Ausmus, Mark Loretta, and Juan Castro have a combined 47 years of major league experience and all are contributing as the lowest batting average is the .333 of Loretta. Castro and Ausmus are both hitting over .400 at this point.

Xavier Paul, up from the minors will most likely get more education than at bats. While he was tearing up Triple-A pitching at a .344 clip with a .542 slugging percentage, it is quite likely Torre will use Paul in very small doses unless his hand if forced.

Pulling focus back to consider the Dodger fans, one notes a few different basic reactions. Panic, anger and shock are the most common. Humor is employed as a balm against the pain as well.

For the Chicken Littles of the world, there always is a crisis. Not much can be done for them save the cinematic comic slap-in-the-face when they get overly excited. Couple of weeks ago, the bullpen blowing a few games was the hot topic. Up next, who knows, except we do know it will be something.

Plenty of anger has bubbled over regarding Manny. Most of it comes from our friends in Boston, and can be easily dismissed for the obvious reasons. A bit drifts down from the Bay Area, in the form of a Bondsyan retribution. This is a tattered tale Angelenos have already heard before with Eric Gagne and Paul LoDuca, though it is true they had already left the team by the time that news had broken.

Some Dodger fans feel betrayed, and vow to have nothing more to do with Manny. We have also seen this before with Kobe Bryant. While a few hold-outs still are in grudge mode towards Kobe, many more have come back due to his undeniable skill and public apologies.

The great majority are still stunned and waiting for more information to be able to digest this bitter portion, however no sauce has enough substance to sweeten this meal. Looking over your shoulder and waiting for the other shoe to drop invariably leads to neck strain. We must break down the elements of what has happened and see it for what it is.

Manny Ramirez has tested positive for hCG, which is not a steroid nor absolutely tied to them despite what many would have us believe. It was designed as a female fertility drug but has been found to have a secondary property of increasing testosterone in men.

That property has the ability to help men with erectile dysfunction and diminished semen production. It also is used by those using steroids at the end of a cycle to replenish their system.

Manny has stated he used hCG with a doctor's prescription for the first reason, while his detractors insist on the latter. It becomes a matter of which you choose to believe, with many still trying to make up their mind.

If you wish to be fair, there are a few points one should consider.

Assuming the bedroom issue is in fact the reason, it is quite understandable how Manny would not want to share that information with many people. In a sporting culture where one does not want to acknowledge weakness or injury, such as Hong-Chih Kuo trying to ignore a painful elbow that's been operated on twice, it's justifiable why Manny would keep this information close to the vest.

It is borderline foolish to expect Manny to volunteer information on this situation to the commissioner's office, given it's location and spotty history. Additionally, it would be reasonable how Manny would prefer to seek a medical opinion from a doctor at his Florida residence, far away from his workplace, rather than from a team doctor who could pass on the information even in an unintentional manner.

At what price point does someone in our society forfeit their medical privacy? Five million, ten million, twenty million? Well, Manny is at twenty so the question is how much lower shall the bar fall. We are talking about a baseball player, not a candidate for President of the United States, where John McCain's physical condition is a fair topic for his ability to fulfill the duties of the office.

This is around a seven million dollar mistake, an error far greater than any Manny has committed on the field. It is fair for one to call it foolish and irresponsible. This won't be the first time those terms are applied to Manny. But is it a malicious attempt?

Show me a positive test for a steroid, then I'll be ready to kick Manny and his accomplishments to the curb where they can keep company with Gagne and his saves record. Without that type of proof, I submit it is proper for Dodger fans to continue to support Manny and look forward to his July return.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | May 6: Dodgers' Luck Turns Historic with No. 13

History is a wonderful thing. Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers won their 13th home game in a row from the start of the season, defeating the Washington Nationals, 10-3.

This eclipsed the modern major league record, previously held by the 1911 Detroit Tigers. Your intrepid reporter was there in person to see the action.

After Bleacher Report offered me the opportunity to be the Dodger Community Leader, I made and continued contact with the Dodgers media relations department. They were kind enough to invite me to visit their new spring training home at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.

The Dodgers had also selected the 13th home game of the season to invite various leading bloggers to the stadium to meet with GM Ned Colletti and a few other front office members. The fact history was pending was quite the tasty cherry on top.

The Suite Life

About 30 of my fellow electron manipulators were escorted to the club level, where the press box and luxury suites are situated. Our suite was located just past the third base bag, as seen from the photo above, of Dodger starter Clayton Kershaw in the first inning.

After some introductions all around, we had the opportunity to spend a bit of time with Dodger GM Ned Colletti. I have in the past called for Colletti not to have his contract renewed when it expires at the end of this season, but have to state I was very impressed with him. Colletti treated us with a great deal of respect, answering our questions fully with background as to how and why decisions have been made.

What About McDonald?

I asked about James McDonald, the young pitcher who has endured a difficult start of the season. The 24-year old native of nearby Long Beach has been fighting his control, which has resulted in his losing his spot in the starting rotation and been relegated to the bullpen.

My question was why not have him sent to the minors where he can work on his mechanics in a less intensive environment instead of occasional work out of the bullpen. I also asked if the 40-man roster was an factor in the decision.

Colletti acknowledged the 40-man roster was a major element of the decision, as Eric Milton, the leading candidate to replace McDonald, is not on that list. All players on the active roster and 15-day disabled list must be on the 40-man roster. Players on the 60-day list, such as Doug Mientkiewicz, are not counted against the 40.

Milton has an option in his contract to request his release if not recalled by a certain date. Colletti spoke of how that is a factor, but not the only consideration.

If the team cannot accommodate the player at this particular moment but sees an opening a little bit later, it becomes a situation of whether the player is willing to wait a bit to contribute to this team, as opposed to trying his luck somewhere else.

Jim Slaton, the pitching coach for Triple-A Albuquerque, reported a couple of weeks ago how Milton needed about six starts before being ready to contribute to the big team. A former major league pitcher, Slaton has Colletti's confidence in such matters.

Colletti had dispatched a couple of scouts to observe him earlier, and will send a couple of different sets of eyes to see his next start.

He also mentioned the great success McDonald had late last season and in the playoffs. The Dodgers hope he will be able to correct his mechanical issues quickly, work on the mental side of the game, and be able to make a contribution to the team.

Sure enough, McDonald entered the game in the sixth inning, breaking a bat to get a fly ball to center, having the second hitter pop up to second and striking out the third National to finish off a very clean inning of work and earn a hold.

No Splinters Here

Later on, I inquired about Colletti's signings of Brad Ausmus and Mark Loretta to strengthen the bench. Colletti's response was straight forward and fairly blunt. He was very pleased with these two additions, praising them for being "adults." While acknowledging how most players, including other teams, are over 21, there is still the issue of being mature.

Ausmus and Loretta joined the team knowing their roles were to supplement and mentor the young Dodger players. They have done that and more, providing many contributions both on and off the field.

In their 17th and 15th seasons, respectively, Ausmus and Loretta also know they have joined a team with a very good chance to make a run for the World Championship. They appreciate the opportunity the Dodgers offer and have done everything possible to repay the organization, to the delight of Colletti.

O-Dog Bones

One of my colleagues helped me out by asking about Orlando Hudson and the possibility of an extension, a question I also wanted to ask. Colletti spoke of how happy he is with the performance of Hudson so far. He also told of his nervousness every time Hudson dives for a ball, hoping he does not get up holding the previously injured wrist.

Colletti spoke of the current financial situation the nation is now facing, which resonated with the group, as only one of the invited bloggers actually drew a salary for his work. It remains to be seen if agents in general are willing to accept the fiscal realities we all face.

Colletti also made it clear, in general, if the team truly wants a player to return and the player truly wants to return, a deal should be able to be brokered. Over his baseball career, that has usually been the case. If a player places an emphasis on maximizing the most amount of dollars, the likelihood of a deal decreases dramatically.

Where this leaves Hudson is a matter for the future, but it not beyond reason to think a deal could be cut with O-Dog. Later, I discussed with some colleagues how that would affect players like Blake DeWitt, Chin-Lung Hu, Tony Abreu, and Ivan De Jesus. We agreed most would likely be dealt away if second, short, and third would be blocked for multiple seasons.

Forging A Historic Victory

In a battle of 0-2 starters, Clayton Kershaw and Daniel Cabrera made enough good pitches for the score to be 1-1 halfway through the game. Kershaw started a bit shaky, loading the bases in the first while interspersing strikeouts after each baserunner.

A third inning sacrifice fly produced the only run he would surrender in his five innings of work. Kershaw scattered four hits and three walks while striking out five on 99 pitches, 54 of which were strikes.

Washington's Woes

Through five innings, Cabrera had surrendered two runs, on a first inning bases loaded double play grounder and forcing in the second tally on a bases loaded walk. Coming out for the sixth inning was a mistake though. A single, fly out and two walks saw his manager come out to collect him, but more damage was looming.

Mike Hinckley was summoned then promptly allowed a single to Rafael Furcal and delivered a bases loaded walk of his own, with ball four flying way high and to the backstop screen. Vin Scully's comment was how the pitch almost left the room.

National's manager Manny Acta then called for Logan Kensing to face Manny Ramirez. Manny slammed a double to the right field corner, scoring two. A walk, single and force out followed before the inning would close, and the Dodgers had blown open the contest by scoring a total of seven runs in the frame.

Closing Out History

Though the game was no longer in doubt, the eighth inning saw the return of former Dodger reliever Joe Beimel, fresh off the disabled list. Ex-batterymate Russell Martin doubled into the left field corner, but Beimel was able to retire the other Dodger hitters.

To pitch the top of the ninth, Dodger manager Joe Torre requested the services of Brent Leach, who made his major league debut. Leach retired the first two batters before surrendering his first big league walk.

He followed that up with his first major league strikeout and the Dodgers had salted away their 13th consecutive home victory to start the season and bump Ty Cobb's Tigers to the second position.

Numbers To Note

The 13-game streak is the most consecutive victories at home at any point in the season since the Dodgers won 13 in a row from May 4 to June 5, 1993.

The Dodgers have won 23 of their last 26 regular season home games, beginning Aug. 21, 2008 for a .885 winning percentage. They are also 31-7 (.816) since Aug. 1, 2008, the day Manny Ramirez made his Dodger debut. Going back to last year's All-Star break, the Blue Crew is 36-9 (.800) in regular season home play.

The victory pushes the Dodgers' overall record to 21-8, the best in all the majors. The next best record is 20-10 by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Dodgers 21-8 mark is their best since starting 21-8 in 1983, a year when they claimed the National League Western Division with a 91-71 record.

Up Next

The Dodgers look to extend their winning streak further on Thursday when they send Randy Wolf (1-1, 3.93 ERA) out to face the Nationals Jordan Zimmerman (2-1, 4.24) in a game that starts at 7:10 PM Pacific. Prime Ticket will carry the game with Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully at the mic.

JC's Dodger Line Drives | May 3: Dodgers Turning Into Sweepaholics

Coming off a 4-5 road trip, the Los Angeles Dodgers found just the right curative waiting at home in the personage of the San Diego Padres. A four game series was scheduled, and by the time Sunday's final game had concluded, their road ills had been dispatched.

LA used all forms of victory over SD, coming from behind to take the first game 8-5. A couple of close fought last inning victories, 1-0 Friday and 2-1 Saturday. Sunday they closed out the sweep with a more relaxed 7-3 decision with ace Chad Billingsley on the mound.

The surprising Padres came to town only 2.5 games behind the Dodgers, but leave 6.5 out while Los Angeles now sports an 18-8 record, which is the top mark in all of the majors. They are 17-6 against division opponents while San Francisco is the next best in the West with a break-even 10-10 mark.

Many prognosticators have tabbed LA to take the NL West, particularly after inking Manny Ramirez to a new deal. Winning in the division is always a key element to achieving that goal, and the Dodgers have started off extremely well in that regard, which has to be very satisfying to manager Joe Torre, GM Ned Collitti, and owner Frank McCourt.

Unprecedented Home Start

The Dodgers 10-0 record at home is the best in franchise history, besting the 9-0 start by the 1946 Brooklyn Dodgers. They have tied the NL record held by three teams: the 1983 Atlanta Braves (managed by Joe Torre), the 1970 Chicago Cubs, and the 1918 New York Giants. The Major League mark is 12-0 courtesy of the 1911 Detroit Tigers, one season before Tiger Stadium was opened.

Manny Among Four Rested Sunday

You could not accuse the Dodgers of going with their Sunday best against the Pads on May 3. Torre elected to rest half of his regulars, including Manny Ramirez, who called Joe in the morning to report a tight hamstring. Torre had noticed Manny not moving around as well lately, but had hoped to wait another day or two before sitting him. Already slated for a breather was catcher Russell Martin, third baseman Casey Blake, and shortstop Rafael Furcal.

Bench Steps Up

Leading off Sunday was Juan Pierre, who singled and scored to open the Dodger first inning. Pierre was 2-for-4 on the day, scoring twice and driving in one. Juan Castro was also 2-for-4 with a run scored while Brad Ausmus went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Mark Loretta was 0-for-3 before being substituted in a double switch in the eighth.

Filling The Bill

Chad Billingsley bounced back from a shaky start in San Francisco to pick up his fifth win of the season. He gave the Dodgers seven strong innings, conceding two runs while scattering four hits and four walks. He struck out eight while delivering 111 pitches, 65 of them for strikes. Three first inning runs were a solid foundation to build on and Chad executed his game plan to finalize the sweep of San Diego.

Vin Brings A Grin

Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully continues to amaze in his 60th season as a Dodger announcer. His persona is one of a grandfatherly type, kind but brooking no foolishness or vulgarity, often weaving classical music or early film legends into his broadcast. Sunday he served up a knuckleball, citing the Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor comedy classic Blazing Saddles, specifically the role of Harvey Korman as "Headley Lamarr", an obvious send-up of screen legend Hedy Lamarr, while Padre left fielder Chase Headley was up. The laughter in his voice showed an appreciation for the irreverent and rather rude comedy.

Up Next

The Dodgers look to continue their winning ways when the Arizona Diamondbacks make their first visit to LA in a brief two game set. LA sends Eric Stults against Doug Davis on Monday and Jeff Weaver will face Max Scherzer on Tuesday. Both games start at 7:10 PM Pacific, Monday's game will be on Prime Ticket with KCAL 9 taking over on Tuesday.
