Utah Has Strong Case for National Title, But Won't Win Due to BCS System

Once again, we are faced with a national title dilemma caused by the BCS system, just like a few years ago, when Boise State was the only undefeated team in college football yet not national champs.

Utah has now finished their season at a perfect 13-0, but the Utes will probably not even get a share of the national championship. Now, I am by no means downplaying the great seasons Oklahoma and Florida have had, but neither of those two teams are undefeated.

Now, when this happened to Boise State a few years ago, many argued the BCS system sucks, and I wholeheartedly agree with that assessment. Yes, Boise State won its bowl game on a gimmick play in overtime, and yes, Ohio State and Florida were better teams, but even then, how you can be the only undefeated team without also being the champion?

This year, we have the same question that is going to be asked, with one major difference. The difference is that Utah soundly beat a good Alabama team and finished its season at a remarkable 13-0.

Now, I am not necessarily saying that Utah could beat Oklahoma or Florida, but the Utes deserve a chance to at least play one of them for the championship. As long as the BCS system is in place, non-BCS conference teams will never get a fair shot at a national championship, and it is just not right.

The bottom line is that until college football goes to some sort of playoff system, the problems and unfairness of the BCS system will still exist.
