Oh Canada: After 15 Years Toronto Raptors Ready To Make Jump

The Toronto Raptors have been in the Association for 15 years this year, and well they haven't really made the jump from an expansion franchise to a franchise that is constantly on tv and makes the playoffs almost annually.

Whether it was the false hope in Damon Stoudamire, or the memorable but brief Carter/McGrady era, which was crippled by bringing in overpaid veterans and trying to build a team around a pure scorer.

Perhaps it was Carter's departure, which was in the horrible Rob Babcock era which brought the Raptors such busts as Rafael Arujo.

Whatever the cause, it seemed like the Raptors were headed to be a basement team to suffer the same fate as their countrymen the Grizzlies, and be shipped back to the the US.

But then Bryan Colangelo was hired and the team has been retooled and overhauled with a focus on European talent and height at every position. The Raptors have been one of the NBA's most exciting teams of late and won the 07-08 Atlantic Division title. They have real potential to go on a run this year.

They have one of this year's breakout stars Andrea Bargnani who has finally found consistency in his game, and a stronger, more motivated Chris Bosh.

On top of that they picked up Hedo Turkoglu and have a healthy Jose Calderon. It seems like everything is good in Raptorland lately.

They have a motivated team that can shoot the lights out of the gym every night. Their weaknesses has always been defence, but hey, defence may win championships, but offence wins games.

In the regular season winning games is what matters at the moment.

This is not meant to be a long article but just a notice on how Canada's team is on its way to the joining the top of the NBA and taking what they think is theirs.

The Solution To The Toronto Blue Jays Problems Is Simple, New Owners

Well it has been another ho hum season for Canada’s team, the Toronto Blue Jays. This marks the 15th straight year the Blue Jays have missed the playoffs. The last time they made the postseason was 1993, when yours truly was sitting in diapers and sucking his thumb.

The Blue Jays have had good players come through the franchise in this time and have had some solid ballclubs in that time, but they have just not been able to get over the hump and make that step into October baseball.

There are a laundry list of problems in Toronto, but there seems to be one solution that will solve the majority of them.

Rogers Communications needs to sell the team.

The Rogers ownership era has been disappointing to say the least and has been filled with bad decisions, whether it was the obvious conflicts in interest by giving their company an absolute monopoly on everything Toronto Blue Jays, to their horrible front office decisions and the ridiculous J.P. Ricciardi era.

First off Rogers basically bought the Blue Jays to put them on their sports network Rogers Sportsnet and they have basically ruined watching Blue Jays baseball. Their presentation is subpar and Jamie Campbell may be one of the worst announcers in baseball.

They also renamed the SkyDome to Rogers Centre, likely at no cost at all. I am not saying that ownership groups shouldn't be able to take advantage of their team, but Rogers Communications has absolutely no desire to make the Blue Jays a winning team, and fans have been showing up steadily every year.

But the problem is that this year the Jays set a record for lowest attendance at the SkyDome and it is obviously apparent that Toronto sports fans are drawing the line in the sand and are refusing to pay to go see a losing team.

Also the front office situation could not get any worse. They have hired two moneyball guys as GM when it is obvious that moneyball is dead and does not work. The fact that Oakland has been struggling since they let their three highly paid pitchers go is no coincidence.

They have overpaid the wrong guys and have let go of the right ones, they brought in random middle of the road veterans who were going to be the “key’ addition every year. None of those lasted.

They had to let Alex Rios go for nothing, Vernon Wells is overpaid and on his way out. And arguably the best Blue Jays of all time, Roy Halladay is likely forcing his way out of town, and considering The Doc’s loyalty the Jays must be really bad.

The Jays do have good young arms, but they are often injured. If they can stay healthy they can maybe build on that hot start they had last year, but you can’t coach durability.

And they haven’t hired a good manager in forever. Besides bringing Cito Gaston back, they haven’t made a smart decision yet, and they have even found a way to screw that up.

The Jays organization is one of the worst in baseball and the ownerships hirings are a big part of the problem

This situation could get ugly quick and most Jays fans are not very optimistic about the future. I think that it is time for Rogers and the Jays to go their separate ways for the best interest of the team and for Canada as we don’t want to have another Expos situation.

So please for the good of the loyal and long suffering Blue Jays fans, sell the team and end the monopoly and mediocrity that your ownership regime has created.

BCS Chaos: Why This Season Has Proven We Need a College Football Playoff

Well, we are barely halfway into the college football season and nearly every single pre-season contender has suffered a loss.

With the exception of Florida, Texas, and Alabama every team in the AP Pre-season Top 10 has suffered a loss and in the tough SEC, you can bet that Florida and Alabama are likely lose to by the end of the regular season.

Then we have Boise State, the team that is most likely to finish undefeated, but has almost absolutely no chance of playing in the National Championship because the play in the horrendous WAC.

The rest of the undefeated teams have games with one-loss teams who will be huge favourites, so these teams have little hope of running the table.

So basically by the end of this season we will likely have no clear cut teams that hands down deserve the spot in the National Championship.

That means by the time November rolls around, we will have a nation of angry fans debating on why their team should be in the BCS or why their team should be playing for the title.

It seems that with all the parity in the NCAA, it is now a necessity to have a playoff in order to ensure every team is given their fair shot. I know even a playoff system would be complicated, but it is what the fans want and it is what needs to be done.

If the current trend continues, every single year watching college football is going to be a confusing mess and almost impossible to understand who has a chance to win and who doesn't.

The average fan is only interested in who wins the championship, and it obviously shows when you consider how much higher the ratings go up the closer it is to championship time in sports with a playoff.

And if the average fan doesn't know who is competing for the championship, they are likely to tune out and watch something else.

It is in the NCAA's best interest to implement some sort of playoff system, and I think it is inevitable that it will happen.

This year's BCS picture is going to be a mess, and I hope it is for the best.

BYU vs. Boise State: The Championship Game That Would Change the NCAA

Well week two of the college football season is underway and going into it we have two non-BCS schools in the AP Top 15. BYU and Boise State two of the biggest schools that don't belong to a power conference beat Top 25 schools on their way to jumping up in the rankings.

Both schools look like they are for real and both have somewhat easy schedules and look like they are locks to be in a BCS game.

But if some miraculous feat is pulled off and the stars align we could have a National Title game that would finally change the nature of college football and revolutionize the way the conferences are perceived and how the voting works.

While I know it is too early to talk about how the table will be ran, and BYU does have to go undefeated in the Mountain West Conference which is no walk in the park, but the only way to change the system is to prove that the non-BCS conferences can produce the two best teams in the nation.

First off it would make both schools football powers and would make them a brand, synonymous with college football, and in the NCAA perception is half of the equation to success. Ask schools like Michigan and Notre Dame, who despite having subpar season still have some of the top recruiting classes in the nation.

Secondly it would get the BCS conferences on board for a playoff. And I don't think that is the best system as I love the way it is now even if it isn't perfect. But the world will not rest until a playoff system is in college football is in place.

The big schools would realize that their schools have less of a chance to win the championship without a playoff if none of their own were in the game and the power schools were sitting on the sidelines away from the sidelines.

Also it would boost the prestige of smaller conferences. With satellite television and 24-hour coverage of all sports on the internet, the smaller schools have much more of an outlet and have a bigger following, but are still considered weaker and should be. The level of play in these conferences is getting better, but they need better recruits and exposure during bowl season helps.

The smaller conferences have definitely showed that they have teams that could hang in the big conferences and can even beat them. BYU and Boise State are two of the biggest party crashers but schools like TCU and Utah have also proved they can produce Top 25 teams year in and year out.

Well both teams being in the national title game is unlikely but a matchup between the two would probably be one of the most entertaining games of the year and would dmeand a major audience and media coverage.

If both these schools are the only undefeated schools in the NCAA at the end of the year they should be playing in the Title game no matter what. If a school is ranked in the Top 15 in the preseason poll and ends up being the only undefeated team they should be playing for the title no matter how hard their conference is.

Although BYU and Boise State have something special this year, only time will tell if these two teams will change the face of college football or not. But this year will have one hell of an ending no matter how it ends.

On The Road To History: Why Boise State Will Be The National Champions

Entering the first real day of the college football season the sports world is buzzing over LeGarrette Blount's sucker punch at the end of their season kickoff tilt on Thursday.

That is not what they should be talking about.

What should be talked about is that Boise State beat a Top 25 team and has finished its top competition and are on the fast track to be the NCAA's only undefeated team this year.

Which should mean that Boise State barring a screwup by the computers, which is prone to happening have a serious shot at a spot in the BCS National Championship Game.

Boise State's slate for the rest of the year is the easiest of any of the Top 25 teams and they should blow the rest of their opponents out of the water. They have a more balanced attack than they have ever had and they have a good young quarterback in Sophmore Kellen Moore and should be able to handle everyone easily.

The debate is whether you would move Boise State up or down in the standings after a win against a weak opponent I think that won't happen as BCS Conferences have easy non-conference games and don't lose in the polls for it.

Boise State has another good team and are now recognized as a elite program and are recognizable all over the country by fans and voters alike. They score a lot of points and have players that get them on SportsCenter every week.

The Broncos are victims of a bad conference and can't choose the caliber of opponent they play in the majority of their games and they shouldn't be penalized for it. They just proved they could hang with the best in the Pac-10 by beating a team that was considered to finish in the top half of the Pac-10 before the sucker punch incident.

If the Broncos were in the Mountain West for example, they would be instantly considered as big time players in the title race this year just by virture of conference prestige.

If Boise State rock all of their conference opponents the way they should they should be able to overcome the scarlet letter they have.

Boise State is one of the best teams in college football and will be in the BCS Party when the holidays come around, but something bigger is in store for the Broncos this year, I can just feel it.

Chase's Lists: My Five Favorite Athletes Of All Time

While it's the summertime and it is a slow period for sports news, with little to report other than the release of Madden 2010, I am going to let you guys learn a little bit about me.

Throughout the history of sports there have been many colourful characters and dominating athletes. In my lifetime I have seen many great sports moments and have witnessed some pretty bad ones to.

From MJ's last shot to "The Malice In The Palace" I have seen the peak and trench of sports. Today I am going to let you look at my favorite athletes of all time.

I am a fan of hard playing players who aren't afraid to speak their mind and have a bit of character to them. And they have to be innovative players who always were on the highlight reels. You won't find any Tim Duncans on this list.

So without further adue here is the list.

5. Pistol Pete Mariavich

Although I was not alive during any of his career or during his lifetime, Youtube has given many former players new life. Pistol Pete always looked like he was playing a different game and his dribbling drills are still used by coaches all over the world.

His career was cut short by injuries and having to be the star of his team. But the first Million Dollar Man of pro sports never failed to give the crowd something to cheer about and his NCAA career scoring records will never be broken even if he set them without a three point line.

Pistol Pete innovated the art of the deceptive pass and basketball would have been a much different sport if the world never saw The Pistol.

4. Michael Vick

There I said it. Michael Vick is one of my favorite athletes and I hope he shuts up all the haters.

If anyone tells you they didn't stop and watch anytime they saw Vick drop back in the pocket during his Falcons days they are liers. Vick ran, threw and basically blew up the stereotype of what a quarterback can do.

Vick ran for more yards than some running backs and made plays happen year after year despite having absolutley no weapons at receiver to throw to.

Plus does anyone remember Madden 2005?

Michael Vick is one of this decade's sports icons, and good or bad people will remember him.

3. Dennis Rodman

Sports ultimate bad boy. Rodman made himself a pop culture figure without help from Nike commercials or being recognized as one of his sports elite.

Despite being what many consider a diva. Rodman was one of the toughest NBA players of the '90s. During an era that made David Stern invent the flagrant foul and changed the way the game was called, Rodman thrived.

Today's NBA players all could learn from the things Rodman did on the court. Rodman gave it his all on the court. And at 46 could probably still play.

2. Trevor Linden

I am a Vancouver Canucks fan and Trevor Linden is the ultimate Canuck.

He led the Canucks to the closest they have ever been to a Stanley Cup when they barely lost to the New York Rangers in an epic Game Seven. He was traded away during the Mike Keenan era, but he came back and continued to be one of hockey's great leaders.

Later in his career he may have lacked some of the speed that made him a star. But he brought it every night and did what it took to help his team win.

Linden earned the nickname "Captain Canuck".

1. Reggie Miller

There is only one way to describe Reggie Miller: Clutch.

Reggie Miller is one of the most underrated basketball players of all-time. He is a victim of playing in eras where other players got much more attention. MJ, Kobe and Shaq, AI, and others always overshadowed him, but Miller never let that get to him.

He is the greatest shooter in NBA history and is the king of the Mecca of basketball, Madison Square Garden. He gives Knicks fans nightmares and if you mention Reggie Miller at a Knicks game you might not make it out of there on your own two feet.

Miller also was a character and did not shy from trash talking because he always backed it up.

Jays Vs. Yanks: The Start Of Toronto's Last Stand

Tonight the Toronto Blue Jays start a series with the red hot New York Yankees, who are coming off a sweep of their rivals in Boston. This series is the start of a one-month slate where the Jays play teams that are playoff contenders.

Their schedule looks like this:

Aug. 10-12 @ New York

Aug. 14-16 @ Tampa Bay

Aug. 18-20 vs. Boston

Aug. 21-23 vs. Los Angeles

Aug. 24-26 vs. Tampa Bay

Aug. 28-30 @ Boston

Sep. 1-3 @ Texas

Sep. 3-6 vs. New York

Now this may look like the "Officially Eliminated From The Playoffs Tour" for the Jays, but this could be the stretch that gives Jays fans hope for the future or even get them talking about a miracle run(which isn't going to happen).

The Jays have absolutely nothing to lose at the moment and have embraced the role of spoiler in recent years, while showing flashes of brilliance this year. Remember when people were talking about them winning the AL East?

If the Jays can pull off a winning streak against the best of the AL, it could give the young players a surge of confidence that the Jays sorely need at this point.

If the Jays lose, all that it means is that the Jays' current rebuilding will be reinforced as they continue to keep plodding along and dropping games to much better competition.

The Jays can prove to the baseball world that April and May were no fluke and show that they are the team of the future, or they can just slide into the darkness of September.

Either way, August is the defining point in the Jays' season, and it should be an interesting one.

Chase's Lists: How to Fix Monday Night Raw in Five Easy Steps

Well with all the Blue Jays news and other occurances I have kinda neglected my lists feature, so I decided to step it up with a first time occurance. Yes this will be my first ever Pro Wrestling article on Bleacher Report.

It is hard to believe because I am a wrestling fan and watch Monday Night Raw religously since I was a kid. Lately I have been noticing a scary change in the way it is being presented though.

Monday Night Raw has became Mad TV. With B-List "Hosts" somehow being given control over the brand, it lacks all believability and makes the ridiculous world of the WWE even more so.

Also for the past two years it has basically been the exact same wrestlers in the Heavyweight Title Chase.

It has basically been the same fueds with certain guys going away due to injury, but there hasn't been a big push into the Main Event on Raw since God knows when.

People are actually considering that Friday Night Smackdown is the "A" show, which is blasphemy.

With that being said here are five easy steps to making Monday Night Raw the king of Monday Nights once again.

5. No More Guest Hosts

The Guest Host thing, which was an apparant cover for the Donald Trump idea falling through has been the dumbest move in wrestling since TNA hired Vince Russo.

Not one host has actually set up a main event that doesn't involve them and there presence takes away from the building of storylines.

Raw has had great heel GM's. Eric Bischoff, any McMahon, even Mike Adamle had heat. Stone Cold Steve Austin was the only great Face GM.

One of the McMahon's or Eric Bischoff need to be brought back ASAP if Raw is to get any heated storylines going.

4. Battle of the Brands

Some of the best storylines of this decade came during the Smackdown/Raw feud, trades between brands, sabotage, surprise appearances that period had the element of shock and the swerve that this current PG Era does not have.

Think about it Monday Night Raw hires a GM, preferably a Paul Heyman/Bischoff/McMahon type, who then give a promo about how Raw has a history about being the No. 1 brand and how it is their job to take it back.

Raw and Smackdown battle it out, with ECW and Superstars becoming what they should be, Heat and Velocity back in the day.

This would make guest appearances on other shows more exciting and would force the creative team to well, be more creative plus it allows for more wrestlers to get pushes while new ones can debut on Heat and Superstars.

This would make all shows fresh again and give a drastic change that the WWE desperately needs.

3. Undisputed Heavyweight Title

Yes the Undisputed Heavyweight title needed to be stopped during its era as the wrestlers were getting burned out performing at each show, now may just be the perfect time to unify the titles.

With a brand war this would be the crown jewels of it which brand has the best wrestler and how they guy would take on all comers.

Plus it would make the IC and US titles more prestigous as it wouldn't be all about the two heavyweight titles as there would only be one.

This sets up a ton of possibilitise and would make the Elimination Chamber match way more entertaining than the three-title system they have going now.

2. John Cena Stops Trying To Be Hulk Hogan

John Cena has simply became too nice. Remember the rap gimmick where despite being cheesy he actually had good mic skills and appeared to be beatable?

That was the era where John Cena was the WWE's most liked figure, instead of it's most unanimously hated. Which sucks when your the company's biggest face.

Once the WWE realizes that John Cena won't be the Hulkster and stops putting him in every main event feud room would be made for the mid-card to grow and start challenging Randy Orton for the title.

Cena is holding back Raw's solid mid card talent who deserve a shot at the main event.

1. Shawn Michaels vs. John Morrison

Yes this would require the end of two angles but a rivalry with this potential has a short window especially with HBK.

Clashes with two guys that match up so great do not happen frequently. HBK-HHH, The Rock-Austin, and HBK-Undertaker are the only great wrestling feuds of the two brand era that feature wrestlers that match up almost perfectly and have the entire wrestling world standing in awe.

Morrison and HBK would be the battle of the heartthrobs, the battle of the biggest egos in the WWE and have styles that would set Raw ablaze.

Imagine a Ladder match between the two for any title. It would be the match of the year for sure.

Morrison and HBK could provide Raw moments that would be cherished for decades and could put Raw firmly back on top of the WWE Universe.

Well hell it sure beats The Miz and John Cena.

Alex Rios Claimed Off Waivers—Would He Fit With the Giants?

According to multiple sources, Alexis Rios has been claimed off waivers. The most likely possibility is the San Francisco Giants, who have been looking for another bat, and have been shopping for Rios, but did not get him before the trade deadline.

This may end up being one of the best moves this season if they can outright acquire Rios at no cost, which the Jays might do in order to shed his enormous contract.

If the Giants end up having to trade for Rios, it may be at a high price, as they were rumoured to have been offering Tim Lincecum for Rios before Lincecum's Cy Young winning season last year.

If the Giants do land Rios, and they probably will, how will this change the National League, especially the tight Wild Card race the Giants are currently leading?

If Rios does go to San Francisco, they get the bat they are looking for, and would have an outfielder of the future, as Rios is a player with a bright future. This would definitely put the Giants as contenders for the NL Pennant this year, and for years to come.

Their pitching and defense are among the best in the league, and players like Pablo Sandoval and Freddy Sanchez are decent hitters that give the pitchers some run support. Adding Rios in the mix would make them a much better offensive team.

The Giants are one of the best teams in baseball, and have a roster filled with bright young talent. Adding Rios into the mix would make them even better, especially considering the Giants biggest weakness is their outfield.

Rios' downside is his big contract and his enigmatic play this year, but a new start would likely give him a confidence boost, especially since he would be leaving the losing atmosphere of Toronto.

The Giants can afford to pick up his contract, as Rios would be a big improvement for them, and warrants the price.

Whatever happens, the Giants are a playoff team, and with Alex Rios, they would be a World Series team. Only time will tell if Rios will end up in the Bay Area.

It's Over: My Open Letter To The Toronto Blue Jays

Dear Roger's Media,

This is a letter regarding my divorce from your ball club, the Toronto Blue Jays. I can no longer put up with the false hope year after year, being promised that each over the hill signing will give us the push that will finally get us to the playoffs for the first time since I was born.

I am tired of seeing my favorite players from years past succeeding on different teams.

I am tired of your inability to find a closer. Billy Koch, Miguel Batista, BJ Ryan, Scott Downs. Is that the best you can do?

I am tired of spending in December and saving in July.

I am tired of Vernon Wells, Alexis Rios and the most overpaid outfield in baseball.

I am tired of letting our best players go. Green and Delgado, the O-Dog, Rolen and soon-to-be Halladay?

I am tired of injuries.

I am especially tired of J.P. Ricciardi, the worst GM in baseball, and that's saying something when the Pirates are still considered an MLB team.

I am tired of Rogers Sportsnet and their monopoly on Jays' games, the only reason Rogers got the team in the first place.

I am tired of hearing Jamie Campbell's voice every day.

I am tired of too many veterans and not enough prospects.

I am tired of wondering how Ricky Romero's career will go down the tubes.

I am tired of overhyped veterans such as Glaus, Thomas, etc.

I am tired of August and September the two worst months to be a Jays fan.

I will always be there for you, and I will check up occasionally, but the flame we once had is gone and I think it's best we see other people and stop this continuous heartbreak.

I will be watching and if you can change maybe we can work things out.

Sincerely

Chase Ruttig

Killing Them Softly: Why The Colorado Rockies Will Be Back In "Rocktober"

In 2007 the Colorado Rockies quietly went on a September hot streak that sent them to the playoffs where they continued their magical run all the way to the World Series coining the term "Rocktober" and taking the baseball world by storm.

They won that year due to no name players stepping it up and hot bats from Matt Holiday and Troy Tulowitzki, the veteran leadership of Todd Helton and a little luck along the way.

After a dissapointing 2008 campaign, Matt Holiday left in the off season and Jeff Francis continued to experience set backs on the mound. The Rockies had another dissapointing start to this year's campaign it seemed like they were heading back to mediocrity.

Fast foward to present day the Rockies are tied for the NL Wild Card with the San Francisco Giants with two months left and no one is giving the Rockies a chance at holding on and winning what is a tight Wild card race just like in 2007.

The Giants have the best pitcher in baseball, the Cubs are finally playing to their potential, Florida has history on their sides, and Brewers, Astros and Mets fans still think their teams have a chance. All signs are pointing away from Colorado.

Well I will tell you why the Rockies will hold off the competition and make a triumphant return to October.

Of the top five National League Wild Card teams, Colorado has the highest run differential and the best road record, no other team comes close. You need to win on the road to make the playoffs and the Giants and Cubs are having serious road woes.

Colorado also is second in the National League in runs and homers, scoring at a frantic pace. Their pitching may be middle of the pack but they get their pitchers run support and confident pitchers have the ability to win games for their team when the bats aren't there.

The Rockies also have most of their 2007 cast intact with the exception of staff ace Jeff Francis and Matt Holiday, who was deserving of the NL MVP in the 2007 dream run. These Rockies have been in this situation before and the Giants have not.

The Rockies also stood put at the deadline and I believe that was a great choice for them, while the Giants did pick up Freddy Sanchez, who is a great second baseman and is a solid average hitter, the Giants needed another big bat that could knock some balls into McCovey Cove and they didn't get their man.

As for the Cubs, who, on paper should be locking up the NL Central title right now, there is so much going on in Wrigley that the distractions might be their downfall.

The Rockies have their work cut out for them, and with two months left in the season it is anybody's race, ask any Rockies fan and they will tell you anything is possible, but once October comes around don't be surprised if you see the rag-tag Rockies doing what they do best, turning October into "Rocktober"

Bleacher Report Fantasy Sports Championship: List Of Participants

Well, after nearly a month of searching for particpants who were eager and deserving of being a part of the first ever Bleacher Report Fantasy Sports Championship, we finally have our finalists, the twelve men who will be waging simulated war on one another in the most grueling fantasy sports league of all time.

The Bleacher Report Fantasy sports Championship was created by me taking two of my loves fantasy sports and the decathelon, combining those ideas created the Fantasy Sports Championship.

Here's how it works:

1. Twelve writers, chosen by me, will participate in the tournament.

2. We will make a fantasy league for all of the four major North American Sports (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) with points being earned from each league determining the all around best fantasy player on BR.

3. The drafts will be held on ESPN.com.

4. NFL League will be H2H with the other three being ladder style.

5. If you drop out of the Championship at any time a wild card spot will be given to another writer, who will have a chance to win, but at a disadvantage.

6. Auto picking is discouraged, but it is allowed.

The Point System goes as follows:

10 Points—First Place

9 Points—Second Place

8 Points—Third Place

7 Points—Fourth Place

6 Points—Fifth Place

5 Points—Sixth Place

4 Points—Seventh Place

3 Points—Eighth Place

2 Points—Ninth Place

1 Point—10th Place

I am excited as all of these guys bring something to the table and it should be an interesting year.

The writers are:

Chase Ruttig (Me)

Seth Doria

Tyler Pollard

Taylor Rummel

Rob Civardi

Jonathan Hamelin

Michael Malcom

Brandon Marsdin

Daniel Abbas

Tyler Mascaro

Matt Julian

Al Fuller

I still need emails from some of the participants so can all writers named please either give me their email through a comment or posting on my bulletin board. Also a bio of each writer introducing themselves would be much appreciated.

The league will begin with the NFL Draft which is TBD, and will end at the end of the 2010 MLB season.

I will try to get some sort of prize for the winner—so let me know if you have any ideas.

Can Graham Harrell Become A Great Canadian Football League Passer?

As you all know by now, Graham Harrell decided to sign with the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders after getting cut by the Cleveland Browns in training camp.

This is big news as Harrell was a Heisman candidate as a college star and is obviously big news no matter where he goes.

All the hoopla aside, the question is will Graham Harrell live up to the hype and become a great quarterback in the CFL?

I say yes, and while it may be easy to say there are several reasons for this.

He can obviously play as he absolutley tore up every defence he came accross in college and will probably be remembered as one of the most prolific passers in Big 12 history.

He is also a winner as he nearly lead his texas Tech Red Raider squad to the BCS National Championship game this year, pulling off an epic game winning drive against in-state rival Texas in the process.

Even more importantly he is not coming to the CFL for off-field or injury realated issues, he was just severly overlooked during the scouting process at the combine and such. Harrell is coming into the CFL without a drug problem or injury issues which is what plagues most NCAA stars who come to Canada.

Harrell will also transition nicely into the Canadian game as the extra receiver and wider field will play into his skills in the spread and as a pinpoint passer. Harrell can absolutley pick off receivers left and right and the CFL is a passing league.

The only question is wether he will get the playing time in Saskatchewan. When he signed the consensus was that he would basically be parked on the bench behind Darian Durant and Steven Jyles, leaving many scratching their heads.

The Riders abysmal offencive performances during the first month of the season have created a quarterback controversy in Regina and if the lackluster play of Durant and Jyles continues, it is only a matter time before we get to see Harrell in game action.

Once he gets adjusted to the system and all the differences between the Canadian and American games, it is only a matter of time before Harrell becomes a star in the Canadian Football League. He'll be an example to NCAA players that there is life after the NFL and it resides north of the border.

Christmas In July: The (Roy) "Halladay" Doesn't End For Toronto Blue Jays

The trade deadline has come and gone and so has Blue Jays fans worries about losing one of the best pitchers in the franchise's history. Roy Halladay remained a Blue Jay as no team wanted to pay the price that was worth the best pitcher in baseball, which Halladay is.

So now that we know Halladay is still a Jay the question is: What will his future with the franchise will be?

Rumours are that J.P. Ricciardi is waiting to the summer to get a better offer, but that is unlikely as it puts the Jays in a position of weakness trying to squeeze whatever they can get out of him before he bolts for free agency. I think this is the most likely option but this depends on if Ricciardi has a job after the season, which I highly doubt.

If Halladay gets traded I think it will be a change in leagues because the Jays would obviously want to do anything in their power to avoid seeing Halladay in another uniform.

I think he will go to the Phillies or Cubs as they have the prospects to trade for him, it is just a matter of waiting until the Jays are left with no choice but to trade him.

If Halladay goes I believe it will be during the 2010 trade deadline if the Jays are sellers at that time, it all depends on the front office situation and the Jays play at the time.

Another option obviously is that he will resign with the club, which I think is a possibility if Ricciardi is gone in the offseason and the Jays stay healthy and make strides next year. With their talented young pitching staff and lineup, this could very well happen.

What does this mean to J.P. Ricciardi? I believe that he will be fired at the end of this season as enough is enough and I am sure all Jays fans are tired of the mediocrity in Toronto. They have been at the .500 bubble for most of his almost ten year tenure in Toronto.

As always, I will keep you posted on the Roy Halladay/ J.P. Ricciardi storyline as it happens.

The Bleacher Report Fantasy Sports Championship: Three Spots Left

Well, my idea for the first ever Bleacher Report Fantasy Sports Fantasy Championship has had mixed reviews, but after six days we are halfway through the qualifying process and almost half of the twelve spots filled up.

I am excited as all of these guys bring something to the table and it should be an interesting year.

The writers are:

Chase Ruttig (Me)

Seth Doria

Tyler Pollard

Taylor Rummel

Rob Civardi

Jonathan Hamelin

Michael Malcom

Brandon Marsdin

Daniel Abbas

So we have nine writers who are excited for the groundbreaking tournament. We obviously need three more Bleacher Report writers who want to participate in the challenge; it doesn't matter if you are an expert in all four of the sports because it is a total average of placing in all four events—so if you suck at NHL don't worry.

The league will begin with the NFL Draft which is TBD, and will end at the end of the 2010 MLB season.

I will try to get some sort of prize for the winner—so let me know if you have any ideas.

If you want to be a part of this event just comment below, give me your email and you will get an invitation to the NFL league as soon as spots are filled up.

Good Luck to all writers.

Affliction "Trilogy" Cancelled: Is This The Beginning Of The End?

With Josh Barnett's positive steroid test cancelling the main event between him and Fedor, the company cancelled the card, according to SI.com

This will likely cost the company, started by the popular MMA clothing brand, millions of dollars, and could effectively cripple the company financially. This could end the company and effectively give the UFC a monopoly on the MMA game.

But is this the end of Affliction? I say yes.

This was likely Fedor's last fight with the company, and while he may have to wait to fight again he may be able to just jump ship now. And after this fiasco I think he is done with Affliction and will sign with the UFC.

This takes away Afflictions biggest, and only superstar fighter and takes away their ability to have a headline fight that is must see. Without that Afflictions extravagant cards will lose even more money as less fands will attend or buy the event on pay per view.

They still have some good fighters and some names, Tito Ortiz is one, but these guys lack the juice to get the fans convinced that this is serious competition to the UFC.

So if Affliction folds what does that mean for the rest of the MMA world?

While Strikeforce will be the de facto number two company in North America and they have some great fighters and an exciting product, maybe they can be the company that steps up to the plate with Affliction and Elite XC failing at maintaining a foothold as UFC's main opponent.

And the UFC will obviously gain from all the fighters with Affliction becoming free agents. Especially in the heavyweight divisions which is by far the UFC's weakest.

They obviously get Fedor but Little Nog also could be signed and he is an up and coming fighter who could be the next great heavyweight fighter and someone I could see unseating Lesnar in the future.

The UFC would love to get their hands on as much Affliction guy as possible as it would definitely bolster their already stacked roster of fighters as well as eliminate their main competition.

Affliction may still have the fight to stay in the game, and I am sure they have the checkbook to, but the question is how long will they last without Fedor and when are they going to fold? Only time will tell, I certainly will be watching and reporting the events of this interesting story.

Watch Out: Mark "Mad Dog" Madsen Returns to Los Angeles with the Clippers

Mark Madsen is coming back to Los Angeles. This time he is playing with the Clippers. He was involved in a four-player trade that sent Quentin Richardson to Minnesota.

Why is this news? It's new because Mark Madsen is responsible for one of the worst moments in parade history.

After the Lakers won one of their titles, Madsen felt the urge to dance, and the rest is history.

I am warning the Clippers to throw away their season. If the Clippers continue their title-winning pace, Madsen will be dancing yearly, which is hazardous to children and pregnant women.

So, I am pleading for the Clippers to stop their winning ways and to start losing for once. They need to do this for everyone else's sake, as Mark Madsen's dancing will cause the end of the world

Here is his debacle in '01 and the infamous dance in 2002

Chase's Lists: Five Reasons You Should Watch the Canadian Football League

Well it is that time of year again. The NBA and NHL seasons are over and free agency is winding down, the NFL is still in the minicamp stage, and the only thing to watch on the tube is baseball, right?

Wrong, there is one shining beacon of hope—and that is the CFL. As a Canadian I must introduce you to the savior of summer sports boredom.

The Canadian Football League is the only pro football league in North America that plays its games in summer, and with the Arena League being on hiatus, it is your only chance to get your football fix during the NFL offseason.

The game may be different than the NFL; three downs instead of four; twelve players a side; and a bigger, wider field are some of the fundamental differences. The league is exciting and fast, allows group celebrations, and is an entertaining product off and on the field.

Here are five reasons why you should watch the CFL

5. The Saskatchewan Roughrider Fans

The fans of the Saskatchewan Roughriders may just be the most eccentric fans in pro football—from wearing watermellons on their heads to making cowboy hats out of beer boxes (I have worn both), the Rider fans always have a great idea. They travel to every game no matter where it is in Canada, and when they have a home game they always bring the thunder.

They didn't host a home playoff game for nearly twenty years till their Grey Cup run in 2007, and believe me Taylor Field was rocking from week one.

If you want to see how football can succeed in small markets look at the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

4. The Wide Recievers

The CFL always has great wide receivers. From Rocket Ismail during his days in Toronto to Milt Stegall, the all-time leader in CFL touchdown receptions; to present day all stars like Andy Fantuz, and Arland Bruce III, the CFL's Chad Johnson—who infamously honored Michael Jackson by taking off his uniform and pretending to be buried. The CFL has great receivers who always want to entertain.

Combine that with quarterbacks who love to let it fly and you have the league that puts the points on the board.

3. Former College Stars

If your favorite college player didn't make the NFL, don't worry, chances are he will be in the CFL. We have many former BCS college starters in the league, and Graham Harrell is making his way to the CFL, he is sure to light it up in the run and gun renegade league.

If you want to take a trip down memory lane and watch your favourite players on Saturday as pros. The CFL has it covered.

2. Games Spread Out Accross The Weekend

Unlike the NCAA or NFL, which mainly have their games on Saturday and Sunday respectivly, the CFL has games from Wedsenday through to Saturday, with the staple being Friday Night Football, and trust me, high school kids have nothing on us.

If you want to get your football fix all week and have memorized every single play of NFL Replay, it might be time to check out the CFL.

1. It's easy to find.

With the internet it is easier than ever to watch the CFL. Go to www.cfl.ca to check out the American TV schedule, and I'm sure the games are on ESPN360. If you are tech savy, www.channelsurfing.net streams the games.

It's fast and convienent to watch some summer football.

I hope you check out North America's "Other Pro Football League"

Chase's Lists is on Twitter. Check in to see more of my random thoughts about sports and media in general www.twitter.com/ChaseLists

The Doc Is In: Why Roy Halladay Isn't Going Anywhere

Lately, trade rumours have swirled in Toronto about Roy Halladay, who has been the face of the franchise since Carlos Delgado left town. It seems like he could end up on any team from what I have read on our own very fine website, but I am here to express my opinion.

Roy Halladay isn't going anywhere. Period.

He is too valuable of an asset to be traded in a standard baseball deal, and it would require an amazing level of MLB-ready prospects for J.P. Ricciardi to pull the trigger. And lets face it—no team, besides the Yankees, would be willing to give up their future for a chance at making the playoffs.

Plus, they won't trade him in division. It's bad enough trying to beat the Rays, Red Sox, and Yanks as it is, but to have to go against your own former star would be even worse.

Also, Halladay has expressed his interest in making the Jays a winner. He has played for the franchise his whole career, and this is the rare occasion where the GM is forcing a stars way out of town.

It doesn't seem like there are any serious talks going on, either. Trades like this always get leaked a couple days before they go through, and I have yet to read any news about a serious offer.

Plus, who is he going to benefit out-of-division that has that amount of prospects? All of those teams are sellers at the deadline this year. Besides New York, who has the enticing offer of Phil Hughes, nothing seems to be a can't-refuse deal.

If Halladay does leave, my money is on him going to the Cubs. They have young talent, and would be willing to give up a starter on their roster. Ted Lilly seems like that guy.

All I know is, if Halladay does get traded this year, it will be for a deal that is one-sided towards to Toronto, but no number of prospects could replace the moments Roy Halladay has given Canada and Toronto Blue Jays fans.

I find it fitting that Roy Halladay won what could be his last game at the Rogers Center in a Blue Jays uniform in a complete game win. It was the usual diagnosis from the Doctor last night, and let's hope he makes more house calls in Toronto.

The Bleacher Report Fantasy Sports Championship

Fantasy sports are here to stay there is no doubt about that, but they don't seem to get much publicity on this site, or even many articles on the subject for that matter. As this site is the place for (mostly) fine journalism, fantasy sports sometimes gets pushed to the back burner as more relevant issues get the floor.

Well, I have an idea that is going to make fantasy sports exciting here on BR.

The First Annual Bleacher Report Fantasy Sports Championship.

Here's how it woks:

1. Twelve writers, chosen by me through a resume process will participate in the tournament.

10 Points- First Place

9 Points- Second Place

8 Points- Third Place

7 Points- Fourth Place

6 Points- Fifth Place

5 Points- Sixth Place

4 Points- Seventh Place

3 Points- Eighth Place

2 Points- Ninth Place

1 Point- 10th Place

The league will begin with the NFL Draft which is TBD and will end at the end of the 2010 MLB season.

I will try to get some sort of prize for the winner so let me know if you have any ideas.

Writers start applying.

Why JP Ricciardi's Job Rest On His Patience In Dealing Roy Halladay

The Toronto Blue Jays, the team that embodies the "Wait Till Next Year" mentality of the late Brooklyn Dodgers, are once again sellers at deadline day, with little chance of getting into the playoffs.

This time, though, they aren't shopping a key piece to their team, but the whole damn puzzle. Blue Jays GM JP Ricciardi has been actively shopping around Blue Jays ace and face of the franchise, Roy Halladay, since July 1, which is ironically Canada Day.

Halladay is the best pitcher in baseball and has been among the games elite for most of the decade. He has played with the Jays his whole career and is a sure-fire Hall of Famer when he hangs up the cleats.

But his contract is up next year and he has yet to sign an extension, so the Jays front office is opting to get something out of him instead of letting him go for nothing via free agency. Which is a flawed plan for a couple of reasons.

One the Jays have a young pitching staff and Halladay is a mentor to all of them. If he gets traded for more prospects there will be a lack of veteran leadership in the pitching staff.

Second, this trade would cripple the Blue Jays for at least two years until all these prospects develop and it will be hard to convince players like Aaron Hill and Adam Lind to stay on a losing team in Toronto.

Also it is redundant for the Jays to cut payroll with the big contracts to Vernon Wells and Alex Rios, who seem to have lost all desire to play hard and have been having the worst years of their careers.

If anything trading Wells and Rios would make more sense than trading one of your teams greatest players and the face of your franchise just to cut payroll. J.P. Ricciardi is one of the worst GM's in baseball and this is an example why.

This brings me to the topic of Ricciardi. Since 2001 he has made the Jays competitive without actually making them good enough to make the playoffs. He is good enough at acquiring small pieces to keep his teams around .500 and anything above that is a product of teams playing past their potential.

Ricciardi's track record as a GM is so abysmal it pains me to list them. Nearly half of his big name acquisitions did not pan out in Toronto. From AJ Burnett to BJ Ryan in the pitching staff. To Troy Glaus and Frank Thomas basically kicking themselves off the team because the losing atmosphere in the clubhouse stunk.

He had to bring back Cito Gaston to try to revive the team, but even one of the most under-rated managers in baseball history couldn't bring this team to the playoffs.

Ricciardi has been a bust as a GM and his only accomplishment may be that he has been around for so long in the Canadian sports Mecca that is Toronto. If he trades Roy Halladay his days will be numbered.

While at least us Jays fans will get something out of losing our hero.

UFC: Has It Reached The "Top Four"? A Chase Ruttig Essay

The UFC had it's 100th PPV event on Saturday and it was the biggest event in the history of the company and was being hyped since the moment the fight card was announced till the second it went on the air.

The numbers haven't been announced yet but it may have been the biggest pay per view event in the company's history.

The UFC has came from humble beginnings on the fringe of the law and in the pay per view wasteland to the bright lights of Las Vegas and cable television.

But the question is has the UFC risen to the level of the Big Four pro North American sports. Which are the NBA, NFL, MLB, and the NHL. Well it is no question the UFC is more popular than the NHL the question is are they here to stay and are we going to have to brand it the "Big Five"

First we have to set up what makes the "Big Four" what they are, what are the reasons us sports fans spend our money and time to watch these leagues?

In my opinion there are five things these leagues have that sets them apart from the rest. They are:

Coverage

If people are going to watch your events they are first going to have to know they exist. This is where coverage comes in. Analysts let the fans understand the teams strengths and weaknesses. Games are previewed and hyped before and are shown over and over again the next day on the highlight shows.

A sport can not thrive without coverage, as without the fans there are no games.

Chidhood Participation

One of the ways that fanbases develop is from people who used to or still do participate in the sport turn into fans of the sport because they know what it is like to play the game.

The Big Four Sports are in the top of the rankings for participation in youth sports which is proof of this theory.

History

This is an extention of the Childhood Participation. The sport gets passed down from generation to generation and is a part of a culture. The Big Four sports are ingrained in our society like religion and family customs and it is no longer entertainment it is tradition.

Mainstream Crossover

What makes the Big Four special is that they are not just popular amongst sports fans but also to the casual person. The Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals, and the Stanley Cup are must watch sporting events to varying degrees and are given coverage beyond the sports pages.

Their players are just not athletes but celeberties and are some of the most marketed people in the world. They hawk everything from cars to candy bars and everything in between. For a sport to be that popular it needs the mainstream media and the casual viewer.

Highlights and Moments

Once you have all of the above your product needs to be exciting and have moments that go down in history. From David Tyree's catch to Bill Buckner in the 1986 World Series all of the Big Four sports have moments that are talked about for years.

Where does the UFC stand?

Coverage

The UFC is heavily covered by ESPN and the lesser sports networks and their TV deal with Spike gives them free publicity. There UFC Countdown series gives their events hype and lets their superstars become household names.

After the fights the highlights are shown on the highlight shows that are given the rights and are shown on Youtube and are talked about on the sports sites. It is no question that the UFC has a significant amount of coverage.

Childhood Participation

Mixed Martial Arts may not be Little League baseball but there are definitley kids who are in martial arts disciplines there is just not really a stage for little kids to step into an Octagon for competition due to the obvious public outcry that would be raised.

The time will come, but until then the UFC does not reach the Big Four in terms of childhood participation.

History

While the UFC may not have the lengthy history but it redeems itself with the fact they have had 100 pay per view events plus the Ultimate Fighter series the UFC has had many historic momnets and it is not even two decades old yet.

From the big knockouts to the mega fights and of course the legendary Ultimate Finale 1 between Forrest Griffin and Stephen Bonnar, the UFC has had its history and it has evolved from a tournament to a league and sport that we know today.

Mainstream Crossover

The UFC has this one hands down. Due to the fact that their events are for the most part in Las Vegas and Las Vegas being the cleberty hotspot that it is the UFC is a top draw amongst the celebrity crowd.

Also since it is an individual sport it's fighters get pushed individualy allowing for fighters to acheive superstardom Chuck Lidell and Tito Ortiz are examples of this. The UFC is probably the most mainstream sport at the moment as every card is an event.

Highlights and Moments

UFC also passes this one. While some fights may be boring grapple fests with no real offence being mounted, nearly every fight has a couple of exchanges and a few haymaker punches and kicks in it.

Plus UFC is a fast paced product as only championship bouts last twenty five minutes so there are hardly slow paced affairs. The UFC also benifits from having multiple bouts on its cards, ensuring that there will be a couple of good fights every time.

When you look throughout the history there are too many moments to mention in just one blog. You have the Lidell-Couture trilogy, Georges St. Pierre reclaiming his title in front of his French Canadian fans and Royce Gracie's epic performance in the very first UFC event.

The UFC is filled with storylines, feuds and rivalries that can eclipse even the greatest stories in the Big Four.

Is the UFC on the level of the Big Four?

After going over my criteria for what makes the Big Four special I believe that the UFC is on the level that the Big Four sports are on.

Why? Because the UFC has the most passionate fan bases in the world, coverage in both the sports and mainstream media, history, and is an extremly entertainment friendly sport.

It may not be on the level of the MLB and NFL quite yet, but the UFC definitley is on the level of the NHL and NBA and one day could possibly be the biggest sport in North America.

Chase's Lists: Top Ten Fighters In MMA Today

After UFC 100 many questions were answered and many fighters stocks rose and fell. Here are my top ten fighters in the Mixed Martial Arts game right now.

10. Dan Henderson, Middleweight, UFC

Henderson, the former PRIDE star and MMA legend has bounced back from his setback losses to Anderson Silva and Rampage Jackson which resulted in the unification of the Pride and UFC belts in a big way.

Henderson has beaten Rich Franklin and Michael Bisping since then and should earn himself a rematch against Anderson Silva in the future but only time will tell if Henderson will be able to bring back that old magic and return to title glory.

9. Rampage Jackson, Light Heavyweight, UFC

Quinton Rampage Jackson has almost entered the Mike Tyson zone of fighters whose personal problems have taken away from their immense fighting talent. Even with his out of ring problems Rampage is still one of the top dogs in MMA's toughest divisions.

If Rampage beats Evans he will once again cement his place as the top dog in the MMA game

8. Rashad Evans, Light Heavyweight, UFC

Even with his loss to Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans is arguably still the second best fighter in the Light Heavyweight division. He has destroyed everyone in his path with the exception of Machida, who is one of the best fighters in the game right now.

Look for Evans to keep running the table against the Light Heavy's and beat Rampage Jackson in their rematch

7. Brock Lesnar, Heavyweight, UFC

Lesnar has cemented his spot in the top ten by avenging his only loss in the UFC by pummelling Frank Mir on Staurday. Lesnar will continue to win easily in the heavyweight division as there is little depth in what is the UFC's weakest division.

Look for Lesnar to have trilogies with Frank Mir and Randy Couture before hopefully getting the dream fight with Fedor.

6. BJ Penn, Lightweight, UFC

After a brief hiatus from the Lightweight game, BJ Penn is defending his belt against Kenny Florian in what has fight of the night potential. Penn may be on the slide, but a return to his natural weight class will help him redeem his status among the elite.

5. Mike Brown, Featherweight, WEC

Brown is the star of UFC's minor leagues, World Extreme Cagefighting, but the only reason he is there is he fights in the featherweight division which is one of the most exciting divisions in MMA.

Brown has beaten all of his competition and could jump to Lightweight and have a good run in the UFC.

4. Fedor, Heavyweight, Affliction

Fedor is one of MMA's biggest enigma's there is so many opinions on whether he is the best for pound for pound fighter or another Kimbo Slice.

Fedor is real and with the lack of heavyweights it is impossible for him to have the level of competition that others have, but a move to the UFC and destroying their mediocre fighters would help.

3. Anderson Silva, Middleweight, UFC

The Spider is the best striker in MMA history in my opinion and has the potential to end a fight at any moment, but his fights have been lackluster of late as most of the fighters he has faced have basically rolled over and refused to fight like men.

This problem will be solved at UFC 101 as he fights Forrest Griffin who does not back down from anyone. This will go down as one of the best moment in each fighters careers.

If Silva shows us he has a ground game he will once again be recognized as the best pound for pound fighter, but until then he sits at number three.

2. Lyoto Machida, Light Heavyweight, UFC

Lyoto Machida is on to an incredible start to his already superstar career. He has beaten everyone that has stepped in the cage with him and his Machida Karate seems to be able to match up with any kind of fighting style.

It will be a long time before a fighter comes along that will be able to beat Machida, but there is till one fighter out there who is better than Machida.

1. Georges St. Pierre, Welterweight, UFC

St. Pierre may be the greatest all-around fighter of all time. He can strike, wrestle and submit fighters and seems unable to be the underdog in any fight. His recent fight against up and comer Thiago Alves reinforced the fact that GSP is not going anywhere.

A superfight against Anderson Silva would not only settle the debate on who is the best fighter in MMA, but would put UFC in the "Big Four" major sports.

So there you have it your top ten fighters in MMA right now. Tell me what you think and check me out on Twitter: www.twitter.com/ChaseLists

Busts? Breaking Down the Sterotype of European NBA Prospects

Throughout the modern history of the NBA there has been a certain stigma about European players, especially those that are entering through the NBA draft.

They are said to be less athletic; a product of weaker competition, unable to adjust to the style and pace of the NBA, and unable to adjust to American life.

While that may be true, the downfall of most NBA teams is that they think all European players will be busts if they are picked high. This is furthest from the truth.

While there have been examples of this throughout history, when you look through the history of the draft, many European players have had solid NBA careers.

In the 90's players like Vlade Divac, Deltef Schrempf, the late Drazen Petrovic, Arvydas Sabonis, and Toni Kucoc had solid seasons with Schrempf becoming athree time All-Star.

Most of these players developed a stigma of Europeans being reluctant to leave Europe, the most famous being Kucoc, who is mentioned in the great book The Jordan Rules as being nicknamed "The Waiter" by his Bulls teammates.

This decade has given us Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, Pau Gasol, Big Z, Hedo Turkoglu, and Jose Calderon, all who have became starters on playoff teams. These players have brought the European style of basketball to the forefront and many teams are using it in their playbooks.

With all these star European players in the NBA, why do Europeans still have a mark on their record? I feel maybe it is because they are less marketable, but are they really, or is it just the NBA pushing us the college star who played in the Final Four before jumping to the NBA?

Why can't it be the European, who as a teenager played against men, leading his team to the Euroleague title before jumping to the bright lights of the NBA?

What is more impressive, Stephen Curry's performance in the 2008 NCAA Tournament or Ricky Rubio's performance agianst the Redeem Team in the Olympic Final with a injured wrist?

I would take Rubio over any other player in this years draft due to the fact he proved he could play against NBA players already.

While yes, some European players have been busts in the NBA, haven't players who have played in the NCAA turned into busts? Just because you played in the NCAA, which somehow is the second best basketball league in the world, you become better than any other prospect.

Did teams shy away from picking players straight out of high school in the lottery? These players played against far weaker competition and still managed to become lottery picks, without proving that they could perform against players at or above their skill lelvel.

Plus the level of international basketball has became more competitive with the U.S. completley missing the Final at the Olympics and losing in the 2006 FIBA World Championships against Greece.

So then what is the proof that Europeans are at a lower level than college players? Is it that there are more college players than Europeans? Is it the amount of publicity the college players receive through the NCAA? I think so, and is that a valid reason to pass on a poitentially elite player?

What the NBA needs is a Junior World Championship, much like what hockey has through the IIHF, in which the world's best basketball nations compete in an Under 20 tournament with the best players.

This could take place before or after the college season, and it would give scouts an oppurtunity to look at the best European players and the best North American players compete against one another.

This has worked for hockey, and the tournament is one of the highest rated sporting events in Canada every year. Imagine the oppurtunites in marketing this tournament. Stacked United States team faces country with European star trying to upseat the U.S. at top of basketball world.

Until the old ways of thinking among NBA teams change, European players will always be considered second rate compared to former college stars and who knows maybe one day a team will pass up on the European Michael Jordan.

Chase's Lists: What Is Toughness in Basketball?

Toughness is a trait in an athlete that is often misused especially in basketball. Most sportswriters and analysts equate toughness as being fired up and visibly intense.

Toughness, in all reality, is making smart decisions and playing in the team dynamic. This includes taking smart fouls, making free throws, being "clutch," and playing hurt.

So, to sort the mess that is the definition of toughness, I have compiled a list of things that make a basketball player tough, both mentally and physically.

Toughness is giving more on your end of the floor than on offense. Any superstar, or any basketball player for that matter, can score, but it is the great players that prevent their opponents from scoring.

Toughness is not saving your energy for the next quarter or next game. Treat every minute you play basketball as if it is the most important game or most important practice of your life. Leave it all on the court, and you will be amazed at the results.

Toughness is not whining about fouls or dirty play. Many people give examples of tough players, and many of the medias go-to tough guys are leading their team, or the entire league, in technical fouls. A tough player knows not to cost his team points by arguing with the officials.

Toughness is taking good, clean charges. Don't confuse this with flopping, what I mean here is stepping in front of your man and establishing your position in order to alter his shot or draw a foul. Vlade Divac and Manu Ginobili are not tough, but the players who lay their body on the line to take good, hard charges are among the toughest players in sports.

Toughness is putting the team first. Every player can make themselves look good on any given night, but the tough players put the team ahead of their own personal stats and achievements. The most important stat in sports is the numbers on the scoreboard when the clock hits zero.

Toughness is playing through the foul. Good players draw fouls; great tough players draw the foul and score. Which leads me to...

Toughness is making your free throws. The best sign of a tough, disciplined player is his free-throw percentage. Did he put in the work to do his best?

Toughness is being there first. First to practice, first to games, first on the bus, first to high-five his teammates, first to pick up his teammate after a charge or foul—the team players are always there first.

Toughness is working hard to get open. It is easy to get your touches when your defender makes a mistake, but it is tough to make the effort to get the ball with a defender in your shorts.

Toughness is wanting and making the shot when it counts. Tough players get their team wins when the pressure is on.

Toughness is discipline. How about that? Can we finally get rid of the word toughness from our sports vocabulary? It is now called being a disciplined player, not a tough player.

Toughness is blocking shots inbounds. Any jumper can block a shot into the fifteenth row, but a tough player will block it to his teammates in contrast to going for the highlight reel.

Toughness is versatility. Any player will be good at one thing, but the toughest players will take the time to be good at everything.

Toughness is playing hard, not playing dirty. You can play hard, and use hand checks and putting the hand in the face. But tough players do not take cheap shots.

Toughness is wanting the ball with the game on the line. The tough players will want their teams chances riding on one shot, and they relish the moment.

So there you have it, that is what toughness is in basketball.

USC Hires Kevin O'Neal: Is This the Right Move?

Today USC hired Kevin O'Neal, who has had mixed sucess at his five head coaching stops.

This announcement came after USC stated they were going to hire a high profile coach. While O'Neal is a decent coach, he is certainly not high profile. He hasn't held a job for more than five years and has had mediocre results.

This has been a let down for me, as I hoped that USC would make a big name signing and rise to national prominence, creating an even more competitive Pac 10, which is one of the most entertaining conferences in basketball.

But aside from whether O'Neal is high profile or not, is he the right hire for USC?

I say no.

His college resume includes a great run at Marquette during his first coaching stop, getting two twenty win seasons. He also had stops at Tennessee and Northwestern that were subpar, and replaced Lute Olsen for one season at Arizona, earning his only NCAA berth and a first round exit.

Then there was the NBA tenure with the Raptors, in which he basically got every single player on the roster to stop hustling and finally gave Vince Carter a reason to leave Toronto.

So Kevin O'Neal is a hot-head with a losing record and one NCAA berth as an interim coach on a team that wasn't his, and he is your high profile hiring?

It seems like USC was talking a big game during the interview process, but when it came down to backing it up, they just couldn't shell out the money for the big names.

They would have been better off signing a no name coach than the absolute failure Kevin O'Neal is.

Chase's Lists: 15 Bold Predictions for the NBA Offseason

While the NBA season is sadly over, which likely means it is officially Major League Baseball's chance to bore me into taking another break from Bleacher Report.

But don't worry folks there is still one thing that keeps me going through the summer, and that is the NBA offseason. There are many storylines heading into the draft and free agency.

I will try to guide you through and feel free to use these with your friends at the bar and make yourself look like a genius, or an idiot one of the two.

15. Blake Griffin Will Be A Los Angeles Clipper

I know it is not that bold as they have all but signed him to a contract, but Blake Griffin will be a Clipper on June 25th.

14. The NBA Draft Will Once Again Confuse Me

Last years NBA draft was as confusing as a Lost season. With all the exchanging of players after being drafted it was hard to keep up on which team got who.

The NBA should really pick up on the NFL and have the teams move up to pick their desired players. Instead of making trades later on in the draft. This would eliminate all the twists and turns of the draft and make it more entertaining for the casual viewer.

13. Marcin Gortat Will Be A MLE Player

During the playoffs, Marcin Gortat showed a lot of potential to be a effective role player in the NBA. One of those small pieces to a championship puzzle. He came in for Dwight Howard off the bench and showed lots of promise.

I don't think he is worth the full $5.6 Million that has been thrown around by the Knicks, but he could fit into a lot of systems in the NBA. Look at the Raptors and Knicks as they play a European style of basketball that Gortat would fit in nicely with.

12. Stephen Curry Will Go To Golden State

Stephen Curry was one of the players I thought should have stayed another year in college to improve his game and rise his stock. The other two were Lawson and Green from North Carolina.

But Curry will be a lottery pick and the team that will pick him will be the Warriors. Curry's athleticism and deadly shooting would fit in nicely with the run and gun style of play Don Nelson uses there.

Curry and Ellis in the backcourt would give Oakland fans visions of the RUN TMC days.

11. The Thunder Will Be The Most Hyped Team Of The Summer

The Oklahoma City Thunder had a great end to their inaugural season in the Sooner state, and have the NBA's youngest roster. Their core players are all under 25 years of age and are all locks to be All-Star players.

With the third pick in the draft the Thunder will only get better and many analysts are already predicting a playoff berth. They will improve, but with the strength of teams in the West, they will likely fall short.

I expect them to fall the way of the Blazers and have an impressive season end with a average record then make their playoff appearance the next year.

10. A North Carolina Player Will Be Picked By The Bobcats

As we all know Michael Jordan is one of the main executives of the Bobcats and had a great college career at UNC. The Tar Heels have a reputation for taking care of their own and it would be no surprise if the core players on the Tar Heels NCAA Championship team are selected by the Bobcats.

My money is on Green as he is a small forward and the Bobcats already have plenty of depth at the guard position.

9. Shawn Marion Will Become A Free Agent

Shawn Marion has been bouncing around the league lately. Being traded from Phoenix to Miami and finally to Toronto. His contract is up this year and it looks like he will be packing his bags again.

The Raptors are blowing up the roster and Shawn Marion is a pricey veteran that the Raptors have no desire in having. Look for him to be on the move.

8. Ben Gordon Will Remain A Bull

Ben Gordon has been an enigma for most of his young career. While he is one of the game's elite scorers, he has yet to perform as a starter. He can be either Ray Allen or Dwight Howard for shooting abilities.

Ben Gordon is streaky and he is demanding more than he is worth at the moment. Until he performs as a starter he will not make the money he wants anywhere else. Expect him to re-sign to a short term deal as the Bulls can go over the cap to sign him.

7. Ricky Rubio Will Stay In Spain

This will happen for two reasons.

One, his family wants him to stay at home for another year from what I have gotten out of their comments. Secondly, the buyout being asked from his team is way too pricey for a team to pay in this economy.

How I feel about Rubio being taken advantage of is an article in itself, but NBA fans will likely have to wait another year before seeing the next Spanish superstar.

6. The WNBA Will Be A Laughing Stock

Not really a bold prediction, but the WNBA is basically a league for extreme feminists or degenerate gamblers. This league maybe has two years left in it which is sad because I am a fan of the athleticism the women bring to the table.

5. Blake Griffin Will Not Win Rookie Of The Year

Not really an offseason prediction, but Griffin is not the best player in the draft in my own opinion and will have trouble with the Clippers, who no matter how much talent they possess, always seem to lose.

On the other hand, the Clippers look great on paper and could be a dark horse to make the playoffs, but that would be thanks to Davis and Camby, Griffin will be the Mike Beasley of 2009.

4. Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom Will Re-Sign

The Lakers have two free agents coming up and both had huge roles in their ride to the Championship.

Ariza is the story of the playoffs, he is a great defensive player and has developed a deadly jump shot that helped him turn into an NBA starter. If the Lakers do not re-sign Ariza their chances at repeating take a huge blow.

Lamar Odom loves L.A. and there is no way he is leaving sunny California, he is the Lakers X-Factor. Both these guys will remain Lakers and expect talk of a repeat throughout the summer.

3. Hedo Turkoglu Will Get Overpaid

Hedo Turkoglu is this era's Toni Kukoc, a good player who is not athletic enough to be an elite superstar, but is extremely valuable because of his height and ability to hit big shots.

In my opinion Hedo Turkoglu is not worth anything over the Mid-Level exception. He is definitely not a physical specimen, is getting older, and makes no effort to stay healthy considering his horrible routine of eating pizza before games.

The Magic already have Rashard Lewis who is better than Hedo and is overpaid already, so what would be the point of giving Hedo big money this offseason.

The Magic will re-sign him though as they believe they have a good thing going with their Finals appearance as evidence. It just seems that Turkoglu is an overrated player.

2. Chris Bosh Will Be The Pickup Of The Summer

Chris Bosh is one of the NBA's most underrated players and has the ability to become a superstar if placed in a big market on a contending team.

Bosh knows this and has made it clear that he will not sign an extension until his contract is up next year. Giving many Raptors fans a feeling that he is on his way out of Toronto.

The Raptors would be wise to get something for Bosh before their hand is forced like the Vince Carter situation. My money is a trade with Chicago for Ben Gordon and Tyrus Thomas.

This would work out great for both sides as the Bulls get out of overpaying Ben Gordon and the Raptors get a shooting guard and another hard playing post player, two of their main needs.

The Raptors could then take another post in the draft and have an athletic, young team to build on for the future.

1. Shaq Will Stay In Phoenix

Shaquille O'Neal has been at the center of most of the trade talk lately and this time it is to Cleveland to partner up with LeBron James and help them win an NBA title.

This trade does not seem like a good idea for both teams as the only player the Cavs could give to match salaries would be Ben Wallace, who is not the player he used to be.

Also Shaq and Big Z would slow down Cleveland's offense to a crawl. The only incentive for this trade would be they would have a player to matchup with Dwight Howard, but I do not see the Magic contending with the Cavs next year.

Shaq will stay in Phoenix and they will make the playoffs one more time next year and the Cavs will once again finish first in the East.

So there you have it, Fifteen predictions for the NBA offseason. Disagree? Post a comment as I read and reply to all comments and we can have a little debate

Tragedy to Triumph: How Sports Heal

This weekend was supposed to be an exciting one for me, Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals and Game Five of the NBA Finals were scheduled and highly anticipated by me and my friends.

Then on Friday night, tragedy struck.

Three students at my high school, all athletes, got in a single-car collision and were all killed. Two on impact and one dying in or on the way to the hospital.

All three were athletes and well liked in my small community. One was a volleyball player, one a hockey player, and the other a football player.

As soon as I heard the news, I broke down, about two-thirds of the student body of 800 went to the accident, each hoping that it was a rumour and the people on the ground were not their friends.

Sadly, it was them and in the photo, you can see the cross made of hockey sticks by the tree they hit.

On Saturday night, I went to the spot where the wreck happened the night before to pay my respects to these young men I knew. The place was filled with teenagers crying and sobbing at the sudden loss, we stayed there to 2:30 in the morning, at the end telling stories about them.

Sunday morning came way too early as I couldn't sleep. I started my day off the way I usually do on a weekend morning. Watched the highlights and checked out ESPN and BR.

What I noticed was for that one moment I totally forgot about all the problems and pain going on in my world and became immersed in the sport.

Later on in the day, my brother and I decided it would be good to go to a restaurant and have some wings and watch Game Five of the NBA Finals with a friend.

We got there and well it was awkward at first, we actually ended up having a great time. My friend is a Laker fan and we made a bet the Lakers wouldn't win the NBA Finals. The wager was a meal of his choosing. The Lakers eventually won, and when we left I covered his tab.

What I have noticed during this whole troubling time is sports have always been what I leaned to as my escape from the depressing thoughts and sadness. It has given me my own voice and has been a friend, something everyone needs in dark times.

While I am not advocating using distractions to put off your feelings, it definitely helps.

There are many examples of this throughout history. The Munich Games, the 2001 New York Yankees, and many others. Athletics is often portrayed as a soulless abyss filled with cheaters and money hungry egomaniacs who are basically just there for entertainment.

But as a species we need that entertainment or distraction if we will. I know sports distract us from the big issues in life. Politics, corruption, disease, etc. But what would life be if we always dwelt on the negative?

I am sure there are many people out there who will read this and be experiencing some sort of setback in their life. Maybe like in the case of my town the death of loved ones. Maybe a divorce, an accident, addiction.

Things happen in life, some good, some bad, it is how you deal with them that makes life life.

In conclusion, while sports and entertainment may often distract from the main picture, in trying times they can help heal some of the deepest wounds, if you have any stories please share.
