Putting the LSU Loss to Ole Miss in Perspective

To say that Coach Miles has taken some heat over the last few days would be an understatement.

Irate fans, disgruntled alums, and overall nausea filled the hearts of all who follow LSU with the passion that only LSU people do; I was one of them.

But as the gagging reflex has now subsided and in light of all the things that go on around us, it’s hard to stay focused on the mishaps that led to LSU losing to Ole Miss this past Saturday.

I have a very dear friend who I cherish and adore who shared some things with me that are close to her heart that so dwarf the loss to Ole Miss.

How do you compare a boy’s game of football to the tragic loss of a sister who passed of cancer and her two little girls who no longer have their mother with the holidays that approach?

Holiday times are normally filled with family and friends who you love and care about. The laughter, the stories, the chance to spend if not but just a few hours; time with those who mean the most to you, but these two little girls don’t have their mother.

How about their little hearts in knowing that their mother is not there and although they move on with seamlessly no hurt, they still must have a deep yearning that they can’t quite understand and comprehend and how it must linger in their souls.

How does that compare to a football game where it’s lost because of carelessness or inattentiveness?

How their father must deal with the pain of another holiday season without the love of his life and his best friend, although, the blessing of having two incredible, beautiful girls and the love they have for their daddy is bitter sweet. For he sees his wife in both of them and knows how proud she would be if only she were there.

That pain in my heart for them so profoundly puts to shame any outcome to my beloved LSU Football team.

For I’m blessed with two incredible children of my own and the thought of one of them not here because of a disease or the thought of me not being here for any reason and the loss in their heart for me; burdens my heart with humbleness and thankfulness.

We all know someone close to us who has tasted life when it’s most bitter.

So, as we move into the holiday season and with Thanksgiving at the threshold, let’s stop and remember what’s most important: Be thankful for what blessings we have and remember that there are so many people hurting who have soul crushing challenges in their lives. Put what’s purposeful and most important at the focus of our hearts.

Sports are great, especially LSU Sports and it‘s a great way to put behind us, but for just a period of time, the problems we face.

But LSU sports is not and should not supersede the humanity and the scope of what’s truly real. The reality of life and all its joy, happiness, pain, and sufferings.

Keeping it real helps you deal with what's real. You feel me? Happy holidays.

LSU: Tear in the Eye of the Tigers

I found myself almost despondent after having watched the LSU Tigers brush back the pesky Bulldogs of La. Tech. Most likely, this was one of the least exciting games I’ve ever seen the Tigers play.

To see and hear Tiger Stadium so quiet, with exception to a few boos when the offense looked like they partied all night and woke up just in the nick of time to play, baffles me. Maybe homecoming festivities were the night before?

Also, was it just me, or did everyone hold their breath when Jarrett Lee threw every pass? I guess I wasn't the only person getting a little light-headed?

Anyway, stupor…that’s the word I was looking for. That’s a good description of how the Bayou Bengals looked overall.

They had a better second half, but the game was much closer than it should have been.

Please, I can't stomach any coach speak on how much of a challenge the 'other' schools players were...just holster it.

Granted, Coach Dooley for La. Tech coached a great game and the Bulldogs came into Death Valley with a chip on their shoulders. Just ask Terrance Toliver.

But the biggest question that kept coming to my mind while watching…well, between channel surfing, was how LSU would finish this year.

There’s no doubt that the Alabama loss punched the air out of all the hopes of having a spectacular season, but it’s the same punch from last year that left LSU "airless" for the remaining three games.

After last year's overtime home loss to Alabama, LSU struggled to beat Troy, and were handed losses from…ummm, well…the same two teams we play this year, Ole Miss and Arkansas.

Take away the win against Ga. Tech, and the Tigers would have been looking in the mirror and have no clue who was starring back at them asking, 'who are you?'

Which brings to mind my next question!

Who are you, LSU Football team?

The most complete game you’ve played thus far was against Auburn, which happened to be the game after the Florida loss.

It’s almost funny to think about. It feels like the Tigers knew that the loss to Florida was not going to kill them for a national title, but the loss to Alabama was the proverbial nail in the coffin. The look of a team who's only going through the motions.

Maybe not, but with Ole Miss and Arkansas left on the schedule, has many Tiger fans wondering...more like worrying.

Do these Tigers have what it takes to battle past the defeat of not reaching their ultimate goal?

Or will these Tigers look in the mirror with a tear in their eye, knowing that they could have done better, but didn’t have the guts to prove it?

I believe they will. Geaux Tigers!

Bama Tops Tigers: So Close but So Far Away

What must be a morning of not only bruised bodies are bruised hearts of the LSU Tigers after losing to Alabama yesterday...players, coaches, and fans.

While LSU held serve for much of the game, the fourth quarter was where the needle became too heavy, and their backs were broken. Bama proved to be the SEC West Champions.

Although there were four questionable calls that could have led to a different outcome of the game, the Tide showed why they could be a good representative for the SEC in Pasadena.

I will be rooting for them to beat Florida and bring back the crystal football to the SEC West wing.

However, as Tiger fans, it’s still a tough loss.

To come so close, and to have it all slip away so quickly at the end.

But don’t forget...these experiences are needed to build a championship team. The old saying that "what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger," is so true in college football.

We’ll find out if Coach Miles can inspire his team to accept that challenge. To instill in these young men that defeat is not death...pain is not forever, and what matters most is perseverance.

That’s fine and dandy for the team, but what’s important for Tiger Nation is to tip our hat to Alabama, suck it up, and finish strong for the year.

A possible 10-win season is not what we wanted, but don’t forget where we were last year. I’d say we’re getting it right, and that we already knew that the Tigers were another year away from making a really good case to represent the SEC in a BCS Championship game.

Even if we beat Bama, there was no guarantee that we would have finished unbeaten. Ole Miss and Arkansas are no gimmes.

There is a lot left to play for, and I would hope that we as fans, would honor our team in a way that shows class, respect, and thankfulness.

It doesn’t make the loss easier to swallow...but it brings into captivity the thought that life is not always pretty, and it beats you up from time to time. Think of how these young men must feel after preparing so hard for something and failing. That’s life in many ways. You don’t always win, but at least you gave it your best.

These Tigers gave their best, but it wasn’t good enough this year against Alabama.

Let’s get behind our team and show the love and recognition they deserve.

Let’s finish strong.

Let’s remind the world that LSU Nation is a nation that does not fold our tents when the tough gets going.

Let’s fight to the bitter end...and hang our hats on the character that makes Louisiana a ‘damn strong’ state.

Forever LSU...Geaux Tigers!

LSU Beats Bama: Crystal Ball Glows Purple and Gold

Call it what you want. A gut feeling, intuition, or taking a trip down myopic lane … I’m calling my shot across the bow of USS Saban. LSU beats the Tide this weekend.

And to really add insult to all those who will shun my prognostication … LSU will win by more than a touchdown.

“911 ... what’s your emergency?”

“Houston … we have a problem.”

“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”

Please 'Bama fan … save your diatribe. Yes, I’m a homer and I’ll homer all I want to.

Here’s where the stat crunchers go into convulsions trying to digest such a prediction. If you’re betting on the game, your chips would most likely be placed on Red. If I was a betting man and I was given one choice to pick the winner for a million dollars, it would be hard not to bet against the Tide.

But to discount that lightning can strike in the form of a deadly LSU offense would be foolish.

You’re right; Alabama brings to the table a super nasty defense, no question about that. But there is no team that 'Bama has faced yet to tune up that D in getting ready for LSU’s offense.

“I’m sorry Mr. LSU Homer Guy, did you just say that The Tide should be worried about an offense that has looked more like a junior high discombobulated science project?”

Yes I did. And I am here to say that the LSU offense will be more impressive than Oregon’s beat down of USC last weekend. Maybe not the amount of points, but it will be impressive against one of the best defenses in the nation.

I guess this is where my "featured columnist" position is in jeopardy if I’m wrong?

So be it. I still "feel" like this weekend will be a good day in Tiger Nation.

I’m normally very nervous about big games when so much is on the line for LSU, but call it what you want, I’m calling it a decisive win for the Tigers.

So 'Bama fan ... make sure you wear those Tide detergent boxes with the toilet paper rolls on top, you’re going to need that TP to dry a lot of tears after tomorrow.

Geaux Tigers! LSU 27 - Alabama 13

Les in the Hat Is More than Saban in Bama Nation

Bama Clones are already raiding Bleacher Report like fat kids would an abandoned doughnut shop—lobbing their gibberish on how "mediocre" LSU is...and ever will be with coach Les Miles at the helm.

Another testimony of those said haters in not having much of a life outside of the blog community.

I find it comical—almost "bust a gut funny," in the amount of negative attention LSU gets every year from so many self-proclaimed Bama experts. These small groups of scholarly juggernauts almost always take pleasure in pushing Tiger buttons and have now become so predictable, it’s hard not to laugh.

As an LSU fan, and college football fan by in large, there are many of us who understand the friendly banter between rival teams and conferences.

We all share a healthy respect for all programs, even those who wouldn’t be considered elite programs.

But there is only one program known to LSU fans that have become the fly in the proverbial ointment of good hearted ribbing. I guess you know which flies I’m talking about?

And please understand—I don’t for one second, want to stereotype all Alabama fans as "flies," but the rare handful of them are a pestilence, constantly buzzing about the face with negative comments, vomiting their overall hopeless negativisms in that LSU is overrated, and on the downhill slide with Les Miles as coach.

Case in point as one of B/R most "visible" writers noted, “...Saban built the car Miles drove all that time...he inherited clunker and left a Caddy behind...the longer Saban is gone, the further they’ll slide...”

He was commenting on the fact that Miles actually has a better winning percentage than Nick Saban, posted by a very distinguished LSU featured writer.

Here’s the thing, Bama fan. Let me publicly proclaim a few matters concerning true LSU Tiger fans.

1. We love our program with all our hearts, much like every true college football fan does their program. But we don’t look to put down other schools with coaching ties from program to program and blame or praise the success of the past or future accomplishments. If you research the teams from all over the nation, most all coaches leave an imprint on a school in a positive way.

2. True LSU fans still love and respect Nick Saban. Why? Well, you already know the answer. He’s a great coach. He did bring our program to a new level...no question about that.

Were we hurt when he left LSU? Yes. Were we even more upset when he took the Alabama job? Yes...but we got over it. Will we always be indebted to his vision and leadership in putting LSU in an elite class of programs? Yes...but life goes on.

We love coach Miles, and he is doing a great job. Just because you may inherit a Ferrari...doesn’t always mean you know how to drive one. Coach Miles can drive with the best of coaches out there.

3. Do true LSU fans hate Alabama? No. I know when it comes down to the bowls this year, all the SEC fans will be pulling for each other.

I was upset that Bama lost to Utah last year. I don’t get that feeling about the Clone Bama fans about LSU.

They would enjoy nothing less than LSU going back to the stone age in football...and would most likely still have time to comment and put down our program.

So please, Bama Nation—please know that we here in Tiger Nation look to enjoy a great game of competition with you in less than two weeks. I know that we all look forward to witnessing and enjoying the fruits of labor in the young men who represent our schools.

I will, in a good sportsmanship-like manner, comment on the game before and after. It should be an exciting game which should give us much to discuss...but we would ask but one favor....

Please put a leash on your rogue haters who spoil what’s good between our two loves.

Geaux Tigers!

Dear Coach Miles: A Letter to Les

Dear Coach,

I am writing this letter as one of many who represent Tiger Nation. Those of us who faithfully follow our beloved LSU in most every sport. But like most, the football program holds a very special place in our heart.

Since toddlers, we began our maturation in the cool shadows of the grand stately oaks, the clock tower, and Tiger Stadium. The LSU campus became like a second home. I can not recollect the countless occasions my grandmother would take my sister and me down to the lakes to feed the ducks. And never did we leave without seeing Mike the Tiger, or do a toss and tumble down the Indian Hills. A hair full of grass, and the itch on my legs and arms that came along was always welcomed. Keep in mind, however, rowdy play was never without caution, so as to not stain my LSU T-shirt or jersey. These garments were sacred—blue jeans and shorts weren’t, and often brought many under the breath comments made by maw maw.

I can remember as a child, these times of play and splendor would dance in my dreams at night, and I could see the little boy who looked like me, stare up at the great stadium wall, peeking through the gates to get a glimpse of the field…with hopes of playing there one day. Tiger Stadium was so grand and mesmerizing.

I’m sure like most fans, growing up around a major university and its program can manifest itself in many forms of love, passion, and warmth. I don’t know anyone close to me who hasn’t made some sort of change in plans, or life deciding events around the fall football season. How dare anyone schedule a wedding, or a birthday party on a home game…it’s almost sacrilegious—Not to mention tacky.

I know you’re familiar with all of this, and I’m sure you have the same passion for your beloved Michigan team, and have a story of your own. I know also that you love LSU equally; maybe even more so now that you have led us to many victories since coming to Baton Rouge. You have been adopted into the Tiger Family with a zeal and love from us all. Well, most true Tiger Fans anyway. Those who are "Johnny come lately", boo-birds, and over-all haters, don’t count as true fans.

I wanted to write this letter to encourage you and your staff to continue in earnest. Football is such a great teacher of life lessons. Hopes and dreams often don’t materialize the way we always would like. The pain of failure and sacrifice are all too common in our journey of becoming the man or woman God has placed in our hearts to be through gifts, potential, and talents unfulfilled, or yet unrecognized.

The loss to Florida was painful to watch. I am perplexed as to how our offense is struggling so greatly. Even with last year’s challenges at the quarterback position, we still managed to score an average of close to 30 points a game. Obviously, not knowing the changes, or the game-plan going into each game, I can not comment intelligently on the difference of last year compared to now. It would seem as though the offense is too difficult to run. Can we have last year’s offense back?

The defense is doing so much better, and I am thankful. Coach Chavis and the rest of the coaches are doing such a great job. I feel confident that they will continue to jell and get better.

Coach, I’ve never had the opportunity to meet you, and most likely never will in person, but I want to end by thanking you for your commitment, sacrifice, and love you give to our love—the LSU Tigers. You are a leader, mentor, and teacher of young men of not just football schemes, drills, and objectives, but values, ethics, and morality that will far exceed in the hearts of these young men, and the lives they touch as God places them in whatever venue and capacity He so chooses.

I tip my cap to you coach. Keep up the good work—keep the faith. Only through failure is success possible. As severe heat is needed to burn the dross from fine metals...so is adversity for the hearts of man, to reveal what's true, precious, and pure; Character, Long Suffering, Wisdom, Resolve, Compassion, Mercy, Humility, Sacrifice, Grace, Love.

As the late great Winston Churchill once was quoted as saying; “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Geaux Tigers!

Sincerely, Dale Weaver

Is LSU Merely Another Speed Bump for the Florida Scoring Machine?

Head long into the media hype, LSU and Florida will meet in Death Valley this Saturday with both teams expecting a win.

Florida—the media darlings from preseason on with Urban Meyer, Tim Tebow and Co., have been dishing up pain and discontent throughout their schedule with minimal delays and surprise.

Unless you factor in the "Man of Steel" getting knocked out last week as being a delay?

The Gators function at a very high level of skill and ability, and resemble a Borg-like race of a super trained collective—ready to assimilate all who oppose them.

LSU on the other hand, has shown a more vulnerable "human" side in their quest for victories thus far this season.

Through four games, the Wild Tiger has been more like the Coughing Kitten—with the offense looking as though they’re trying to dislodge a ginormous hairball—especially when they get within 20 yards of an end zone.

All in all, it’s not the end of the world kind of a dilemma, but witnessing such showings thus far, lends oneself to succumbing to the same gag and dry-heaving reflex—with hopes of it soon going away.

If the Tigers are going to hand the Florida Gators their first loss of the season, they will need to hack up that hair ball when the Gator’s defense looks to show whose got better game.

Urban Meyer knows that if LSU plays out of their funk, winning in Tiger Stadium at night, is not an easy thing to do.

Tiger fans are notorious for making Tiger Stadium at night, one of the most unpleasant venues to play in.

You know you’re going to a tough place to play when the athletic director sends out a public address to encourage fans to be on their best behavior this weekend. Which for some rebel minded fans was an invitation to ‘kick-it-up a notch’ in full bore rowdiness?

It’s been reported that Meyer has commented on the best way of taking the crowd out early, which is by “jumping on them early.” Much like the way they did last year in the Swamp.

There’s one man that’s looking to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself in that regard—and that one man has most likely not slept much this week in concocting the perfect game plan against the Borg.

Tiger Nation is hoping that "Chief" Chavis will dial up the right scheme as he has done in the past with Tennessee, to slow down the Gators. Coach Chavis’ defenses have been good against Florida, but not good enough to win.

That part of history, Chavis is looking to change.

As much as LSU needs to do well offensively, it’s the Tigers' defense that will give them a better chance to leave with a victory. A low scoring game will be in LSU’s favor.

Another thing to consider is the fact that LSU is playing back-to-back high profile games.

The big win in Athens last Saturday has certainly put some swagger back in the Tiger’s walk… but will they be emotionally spent from last week?

There are those who question coach Les Miles in his Xs and Os… but no one can question his enthusiasm for the big game. He thrives in big games. Much of LSU’s identity comes from that fact.

LSU always seems to play at a higher level in big games.

The respect factor will also weigh-in on this game as well for the Tigers.

Although being ranked No. 4 in the country, there’s many experts who do not consider LSU the fourth best team in the country so far. And no one blames them—the Tigers don’t look air tight in all phases yet.

That may bode well for LSU.

Very little respect nationally can always go far in the battle of the trenches for an underdog team. LSU is no exception.

They seem to always carry a grudge pretty well… and a large grudge it should be.

That could be the biggest factor to decide the winner on Saturday night.

Ranked No .4 in the country with very little national impressive stats, very little impressive wins, a semi-average defense, a stagnate offense, and over-rated from top to bottom. And to add insult to injury… LSU is being given only a punchers chance to win with or without Tebow in the lineup.

Sounds like a recipe for an upset?

Can the Cardiac Cats do it two weeks in a row?

These Tigers are primed and poised to not just be another speed bump on the way to a perfect season for Florida—but to be the brick wall that stops the Gator Bus—in a classic battle on the bayou.

“Ladies and Gentleman… It’s Saturday Night—in Death Valley!”

LSU's Mantra: The Way of Bamboo

Thus far this season, LSU Nation has been waiting for the way of the Tiger to emanate from what would be most arguably one of the most talented teams in the entire country.

If not for an inexperienced quarterbacking corps, they may have opened the season much higher in the polls.

That being said, "the way of the Tiger," has yet to appear in terms of total dominance of their opponents.

The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns came into Death Valley as the Tigers third opponent and did a pretty good job against LSU.

Outside of the scoreboard, if you compare the box score, you’ll find similar numbers. As Coach Miles might say, "a good go, but room for improvement is our goal."

Obviously as a Tiger fan, another check in the win column is and always will be a delightful sight, but LSU fans may need to adjust their expectations this year with very young skilled positioned players at the helm.

This years team seems to have the way of bamboo…"bend, but don’t break."

In Asia, bamboo symbolizes various characteristics for different countries. In Japan, it is the symbol of purity. China recognizes bamboo as a symbol of longevity. In India, it represents friendship and in Vietnam, bamboo stands as a symbol of endurance.

The most famous characteristic of bamboo was pointed out by Bruce Lee: "Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind."

Both the LSU offense and defense has seen its fair share of "wind" so far and seems to follow this characteristic of "bending."

If you are a defensive coordinator and look at LSU’s offense on paper, you’d quake in your Nikes. So many weapons…so many ways to strike fear…so many ways to cut the hearts out of an opponent.

But with that talent comes the difficulty of managing it…and using it to the fullest potential. Coach Crowton is blessed to have that problem, but therein lies the rub.

The offense seems to still be looking for its identity and like the way of bamboo, it’s just stiff enough to put a nice welt on you…not the force of a two-by-four, mind you, but that's okay…that whistle of wind you hear is the Tigers whacking away.

So far Washington, Vanderbilt, and ULL have the stripe marks to prove it.

By way of the defense, the bamboo mantra is most easily seen.

No question that LSU has improved from the field trip to Washington with a better defensive outing last week against Vandy, but I was surprised to see the Cajuns move the ball with the success they had.

Maybe ULL will have a tremendous year and prove that they are a very capable team. Only time will tell.

With all that said, the biggest question that many Tiger Fans have as the army of their schedule marches closer…will the storm winds of tougher opponents be too strong?

Will these Tigers bend…or will they break?

Tigers Still Growing as LSU Beats Vandy

Ugly is such a subjective word. What’s ugly to some may be pretty to others.

LSU’s victory over Vanderbilt in week two will be scrutinized subjectively, but with much to be thankful for in the win, it was still ugly no matter what type of glass you're looking through.

With that being said, a rain-soaked Death Valley only managed to kill softly, for I’ve never heard a quieter Tiger Stadium after halftime as I did last night. Fans by the thousands must have decided to beat the traffic.

I actually saw a number of Tiger fans yawning. Can you imagine that? Tiger fans sitting back in their seats and yawning...in Tiger Stadium...on a Saturday night?!

The Tigers' game plan of "huddle...no huddle...come to the line of scrimmage...stop, look to the sidelines...checking off the defense" was difficult to enjoy.

The offense, although respectable considering the conditions, was off rhythm…especially in the first half.

In the second half, Coach Crowton must have taken notice of the herky-jerkyness from the first and began calling a more up-tempo game.

Tiger Nation also got its first look at Russell Sheppard.

The true freshman showed his elusiveness on a number of plays, but was welcomed to the SEC by Vanderbilt on his second touch when he caught an across-the-middle 10 yard pass and had the ball knocked out of his grip. It was LSU’s only turnover for the night.

Sheppard certainly brings an electricty when he touches the ball.

The defense, after having Washington put nearly 500 yards on them, managed to keep a very potent Vandy offense off the field. Allowing only seven points and 210 total yards was more like the Tiger defense we’ve come to love.

Although the Tigers came out with a win in the last two weeks—which have not been very pretty—the fact remains that opening on the road some 2,500 away from home with Washington and a pretty tough home game against Vanderbilt has greatly tested this 2009 team already.

One of the commentators last night asked Coach Miles what he thought was the best attribute that this Tiger Team has, to which he replied, “toughness."

There’s no doubt that this Tiger team has toughness, but will all the pieces of the offense and defense come together in time to take on the meat of the schedule?

These Tigers are still finding their way, still looking to grow. Their best has yet to come.

Tiger Report Card: Week One…Where's My Red Pen?

Well…a win is a win as they say, and Tiger Nation will take it, but a few red flags are still waving.

First off, hats off to the Washington Huskies.

They played a solid, tough game. If not for a fumble here, a missed field goal there…they would have upset the mighty LSU.

Truth is…LSU got outworked, outplayed, and out coached…on both sides of the ball.

There’s no question about some positives in the game with Jordan Jefferson managing the game with key touchdown passes to Terrance Toliver, but if you take away the score, the Huskies beat LSU.

While watching the game…I found myself texting friends in disbelief as to how Washington had four yards shy of 300 by halftime…”Where’s the defense!!??”

Side note…to the family in apartment 20...please forgive me, I didn’t mean to scare you.

But…I was really impressed with the Dawgs.

If you put USC uniforms on the Huskies…it would have made more sense. Maybe LSU would have played different?

We’ll never know…but one thing to know for sure is that Sarkisian is the real deal…and if only one game gives us a glimpse of the future…he’s on track to do some great things at Washington if he’s able to keep up this type of coaching and recruiting.

Bottom line? The storyline from this game was not that LSU won…but that Washington gave a heck of an effort…and had a legitimate opportunity to win. That’s not making me feel all that ‘peachy’ as a Tiger fan right about now.

So…without further ado…my grades for the Tigers in week one.

Offense:

As I said, not a horrible job overall, but the offensive line got worked.

I was really, really surprised that the o-line didn’t win more battles up front. Charles Scott did not look like Charles Scott. The ‘Truck’ looked like he was running up hill.

Of course, not much room given to run can do that to you.

Play calling was so vanilla…almost predictable. Good to see Tolliver get to the end zone for two touchdowns.

GRADE: C

Defense:

To me…this was the most anticipated aspect of the game that I wanted to see.

I just knew that the Tigers would be flying around…gobbling-up those Huskies at will. After the first possession…reality came crashing down on me and I realized the defense looks like it picked up where it left off…well not the G Tech game…but all the others.

I was very disappointed in the fact that LSU gave up a total of 478 yards of total offense to the Huskies.

Uh? I thought we made some changes in that department?

Apparently, not everyone got the memo because the defense looked pretty poor, and I was sitting there thinking, ”is Washington this much better or is LSU still not that good?”

I think it’s somewhere in the middle.

LSU will get embarrassed again this year if the defense doesn’t get nastier…end of story.

GRADE: C-

Special Teams:

Special Teams looked great, crisp, and hungry. The only scare came with a punt that was almost blocked, but overall did a great job.

GRADE: A

To keep things in perspective, by no means should Tiger Nation head to the balconies to jump just yet.

New coaches take time and maybe this game is the wake-up call for all, but just so you know, I’m sure ‘Chief’ John Chavis will be up late tonight for the rest of the week trying to figure out how to make some much needed adjustments.

A note to the Tiger defense, I’m not sure where you went, but can you please come back?

Huskies Looking for R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Anyone in Tiger Land that caught the media luncheon for the University of Washington knows that the Huskies have a new coach at the reigns with Coach Steve Sarkisian.

Coach Sarkisian; although being one of the youngest NCAA Div. I football coaches, brings a lot of knowledge and charisma to a storied program gone amok.

It’s hard to argue against how an excellent coach can turn around a program…or bring it to the next level…just ask an Alabama, Florida, or Ole Miss fan.

Listening to Coach Sarkisian, you can tell he’s a players coach…and brings an enthusiasm to Washington that’s infectious.

You can feel it’s more than just a hope…but knowledge of definite change and a new era in Husky Football based on what he is instilling in his players.

The new mantra is regardless of who and where they play…they will play with an effort and excitement that has been lost in recent years.

They will play with an unwavering determination that regardless of the score or the adversity, they will play with a constant, high level effort…and regardless of seniority, the best players will play.

Nicknamed “Sark," Coach Sarkisian while coaching under USC head coach Pete Carroll was the offensive coordinator for two years and was 22-3.

Coach “Sark” also coached two Heisman Trophy winners—Carson Palmer in 2002 and Matt Leinart in 2004. He has also mentored additional NFL-draft picks John David Booty and Mark Sanchez.

The bottom line with Washington’s new coach is that he’s a winner…and winners always find ways to win.

That can be bad news for the rest of the PAC-10...and for the LSU Tigers if they go to Seattle with a lackluster effort and lackadaisical mindset.

In addressing the Baton Rouge media with questions as to how he feels in playing a perennial top ten national football power in LSU, Coach Sarkisian was quick to answer in typical "coach speak," but you could tell he was almost happy for such questions.

You could see behind the body language and eyes that he really is looking forward to his team playing the Tigers.

All I know is that LSU better bring their hard hats and a lunch…because if the new and improved Washington Huskies have anything to say about it, the team wearing purple and gold leaving with a win…will be them.

Washington is playing to earn respect. Don’t be surprised if the game remains close the first half. LSU’s size and experience should start to take over by the end of the third quarter and should win.

One thing for sure is that regardless of the score, Coach Sarkisian is looking to bring Washington back to new heights.

Nine Ways to Know Your Game 'Buddy' Is a Loser

You waited years for season tickets.

You’ve tailgated with friends…only having to ’man-the-gate’ when it’s time for the game. And although not upset as you watch them walk away with laughter and smiles…a small brick of disdain is mortared to your wall of covetousness.

But as the football gods extend mercy, the day finally comes when you’re notified that you can purchase seats to your Holy of Holies.

The clouds part as sunshine beams upon your face…an angelic ‘aaaaaawwwwhhhhh’ whispers down…singing with majestic pitch.

Finally! You are free to enjoy the crackle of excitement first hand…without having to watch your gladiators on the TV…you’re in heaven.

Fast forward three seasons, and the honeymoon is over. Having to pay increased ticket prices and fighting a down economy…the once euphoric feeling has dwindled to a wince.

Time to find a ’buddy’ to buy the other ticket.

You begin your search and find that since most all your friends have tickets…or their wives forbid them to participate…you’re forced to find a guy you don’t quite know so well. Most likely a fellow co-worker?

So…for all the fans who fit this predicament…here are nine ways you know you’ve picked a loser.

1. Mr. double standard: He thinks the old saying goes…”what‘s good for the goose, isn‘t good for the gander.” He can flirt with all the neighbor-gatin’ hotties, but gets mad when you flirt a little. He doesn’t mind you driving and paying for parking…but his car always seems to be on the mend.

2. Wears exactly what you wear: You don’t quite notice at first, but after the third home game…you notice he has the same hat…the same jersey or t-shirt…the same type of pants or shorts. What’s the deal with this guy?

3. Party pooper: Just when you start having fun with your fellow tailgaters, he's wants to leave and go into the stadium. Dude!!! Just chill!

4. Moocher: A character guy is always prepared financially when going to the big game, and the wallet…he never leaves home without it. But the moocher is always finding ways to figure out how not to pay for something. “I paid for that last time!”…yeah right.

5. High maintenance: He’s constantly complaining and whining. Everyone around him just rolls their eyes when he breaks into a chorus of ’whoa is me’, and looks at you like…”dude…why did you bring this guy.” Something is always not right…”that’s too far…that’s too hot…why this?…why that?” You get to a point of just…”please…someone stick something sharp in my eye.”

6. Cable Guy crossed with Napoleon Dynamite : He seems to never have anything to do but call you…email you…stop over without calling you. And at the games, he likes to show-off any self perceived skills or knowledge that is always out of no where in the attempt to impress which never ever does. He wants everybody to know that you and he are best bros. “Vote for Pedro”

7. Booty Kisser: He's always looking for someone to kiss up to. Maybe he’s trying to find better seats? No pun intended.

8. Never on Time: He’s never ready and you always miss getting the better parking spot because he just started getting ready and blames his wife for all the work she had him do before he could leave. Dude!!! You’re killing me!

9. Selfish: They have street signs named after this guy - “One-Way”. You're constantly doing things for him, but never puts an effort to do anything for you. You try and keep him in mind when buying food or drinks…but he never gets your favorite cheese, chips, or beer. What’s up with that?

So, if you find that after reading this…you’re either the loser…or the losee…I can’t help you.

But, to all my college football friends out there who just got your season tickets for the new year and you’re looking for someone to buy that extra seat…make sure you know who it is…because any year spent with a guy like this…your heaven will soon turn into Hades.

Bengal Banter: A Perfect Tiger Gumbo...LSU Style

What is a gumbo…you may ask?

Louisianans are obviously very familiar with this savory, prominent state dish, and although there are thousands of recipes that call for all types of ingredients, our metaphorical pot will hold 11 special morsels…12 if you count the appetizer.

First, we’ll need to define our ingredients.

• 1 cup ‘Vandy’ oil - (I know, I know…the Vanderbilt’s made their money in Railroads & Shipping…but ‘Oil‘ comes to mind with ‘Blue Bloods‘)
• 1 cup flour - (La. Tech…because ‘flour’ and patty-cake come to mind…as in…why is LSU ‘playing’ these guys. Oh well…should be a nice scrimmage)
• 2 large Vidalia ‘Georgia’ onions, chopped (Can you say “Payback”)
• 2 bell peppers, chopped (Sounds like what LSU will do to La. Lafayette)
• 4 ribs celery, chopped (And Tulane)
• 4-6 cloves garlic, minced (Ole Miss and minced sound nice together)
• 4 quarts ‘Alabama’ chicken stock (Alabama…not what they are…but what they’ll taste like this year)
• 2 bay leaves
• 2 teaspoons Creole seasoning, or to taste
• 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves (The Miss St. offense and ‘dried’ seem to fit)
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste (The LSU/Auburn game brings ‘ground’ a whole new meaning)
• 2 pounds of ‘Gator’ (Sorry Tim…you should’ve gone pro)
• 2 pounds smoked ‘Hog’ (Arkansas) sausage, cut into 1/2" pieces
• 1 bunch scallions (green onions), tops only, chopped
• 2/3 cup fresh chopped parsley
• File powder to taste

Appetizer: Pacific Oysters (Washington St.) on the half-shell.

It will be a long way to get an appetizer…but it should hit the spot until the home opener.

Brown the Arkansas ‘Hog’ sausage, and pour off fat. Too much fat in the gumbo just makes it taste fatty and detracts for the complex ‘winning’ flavors of the other ingredients.

LSU seems to have forgotten over the years how important that is. Many a gumbo was spoiled by too much ’Hog’ fat.

In a large, heavy pot (Tiger Stadium), heat the oil (Vandy) and cook the flour (La. Tech) in the oil over medium to high heat (depending on your roux-making skill), stirring constantly, until the roux reaches a dark reddish-brown color, almost the color of coffee or milk chocolate for a Cajun-style roux.

Tiger Nation in ‘Death Valley’ will for sure be hot with anticipation this year and the Sept. 5 appetizer (Washington St.) will only whet the Tiger’s appetite for more. That’s not good news for Vandy coming to town for the home opener.

Add the vegetables (Georgia, Ole Miss, La. Lafayette, Tulane) and stir quickly.

LSU should chop-up La. Lafayette and Tulane pretty good…but that Georgia onion will be a tough chop. Not to worry…revenge can be a sharp blade which should cut through those ‘Dawgs’ pretty good and make our gumbo much ‘sweeter’ this year.

This cooks the vegetables and also stops the roux from cooking further. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, for about four minutes.

Add the stock (Alabama), seasonings (Miss St.), and sausage (Arkansas). Bring to a boil, and then cook for about one hour, skimming fat off the top as needed.

That pesky ‘Hog’ fat. If LSU gets past the big games with wins…the game with Arkansas is always close? Tigers!!! You gotta skim that fat! Don’t forget.

Add gator (Florida) in for the last 10 minutes of cooking so that you don't over cook it.

The Tigers will need to be careful in cooking these Gators...you certainly don’t want a tough gator in the gumbo. If LSU gets by Georgia with a win…the nation will have its collective eyes on Tiger Stadium for THE ’must-see’ game. Please CBS…don’t make it a day game…please.

Add the chopped scallion tops and parsley, and heat for 5 minutes. Serve over rice in large shallow bowls. Accompany with a good beer and lots of hot, crispy French bread.

YIELD: About 12 ‘winning’ sized servings.

Oh…almost forgot desert.

How about a nice Peach ‘Georgia Dome’ Cobbler?

Bengal Banter: Two Words That Tell the Final Tale

Like any college football preseason, "experts" roll out their logical, well-thought beliefs on how and who, will roam among the elite to contend for the crystal ball?

Tebow, Texas...which college stadium is the best?

Time and tried old debates of whose conference reigns supreme, which coach is on the "hot seat", and which school’s cheerleaders are most "Hooter-esque?"

Top 10 lists...top five lists...who should not be on a list.

Statistics, schedules, and any nuance of change for a program, are poured onto the theoretical information gridiron...with hopes of attracting enough hits from readers, who desperately look for their favorite teams chances to win the big enchilada.

As only college football can, bloggers of all ages, races, and backgrounds...emerge. Jumping on the chance to gleefully and at times, sinisterly..."blog’n run"...”your team sucks...your band sucks...your whole state sucks”.

Homers flood the World Wide Web to preach their whole-hearted hype...so passionately and tunnel-visioned, as if the other hated homers would drop their two cents and join their cause?

I’ll bite.

I’ll take that chance.

I’ll join the rank and file as a "pundit" of my home state’s football program.

I’ll take that chance to be one who may go down as the homer who was the homiest of homers.

Yes...I’ll go beyond logic that says that Florida is the juggernaut of the 2009 season and should win back-to-back championships.

Did anyone give the 1980 U.S. Hockey team any chance to win an Olympic Gold Medal against Russia?

Little, puny Appalachian St. came to big bad Ann Arbor to take on Michigan...did you pencil in App. St.?

Rocky got no love as the no-name southpaw from Philly in beating heavyweight world champion Apollo Creed. Nobody but us movie goers picked him?

Nobody...except for maybe Lisa Horne...is picking LSU to do much of anything.

Sure, a respectful coaches' poll at No. 9 is ok. SI has them at 13. AP will be somewhere in between...which is good. Better than off "the list."

But the 2009 Louisiana State football team, who for sure is not an off-the-map type of program, is getting no love at winning big. It’s a big-time program, with big-time talent.

However, this big-time program with its big-time talent had a big-time disappointing 2008 effort.

I say effort only in the sense that last year's players and coaches gave an effort, but not the effort that is needed to do great things.

A key ingredient relating to effort was missing.

Missing, but has seemed to have been found...sometimes a well-intentioned effort will unveil the key ingredient that is needed to create a masterful-tasting season.

I’ve heard it from Coach Miles. I’ve heard it from Coach Chavis...and I’m sure every coach and player on the 2009 LSU football team is well aware of which part of effort they must have in order to reach the top.

You may ask, "What effort are you speaking about? What are the two words that tell the tale?"

"Championship effort."

If you’re going to run with the big dogs...you’ve got to give a championship effort.

Last year LSU didn’t.

This year looks promising.

Based on Coach Miles' body language, smiles, and swagger in talking with the media thus far...I’d say the Tigers are focused on getting and not losing the key ingredient of championship effort.

To all my fellow SEC Homers...that should be some bad news for you and your top 10 list come December.

Geaux Tigers.

Bengle Banter: Heads or Tails?

Tiger Nation is awake and alert…fall practice for the 2009 football season is underway.

As Coach Miles undertakes his fifth year at LSU, there are still sizable question marks that loom on the horizon.

After a disastrous defensive season last year, Coach Miles hired ex-Tennessee coach John Chavis. Although Coach Chavis is noted as an excellent defensive coach, is he the next Bo Pelini? Some say yes…some say no.

Is it a coin toss?

Although LSU lost some key members on both sides of the ball, the '08 LSU defensive front was heralded as one of the most dangerous. This year, the defensive line is not getting much love nationally.

Al Woods, Drake Nevis, and Rahim Alem will most certainly anchor the d-line. Early practice reports state that they stood out ahead of other defensive linemen, and Coach Brick Haley is pushing all the right buttons.

Ok…time to call it.

Heads; the LSU defense will dominate and return to the top echelon of college football defenses, or tails…a better defense, but not the bone crushing, slobber knocking, take you to the wood shed defenses LSU has been known for.

I call heads.

The other biggest "coin toss" question is at the quarterback position.

Last year, LSU was destined to struggle defensively with new co-defensive coordinators doing their best to keep the status quo after Pelini left. But when quarterback Ryan ‘Heisman’ Perrilloux got bounced from the team, it stamped LSU’s season with 8-5 all over it.

Miles had no choice; Perrilloux had used up his ninth life, and was forced to pack his bags.

The result was painful; "trial by fire" brought on a whole new meaning.

That being said, Jarrett Lee received much of the heat and although showing brilliance at times, was unable to correct habits that led to 16 interceptions.

I actually hurt for the kid, and was happy to see that he’s a man of character for coming back to LSU.

With Lee’s inability to correct mistakes, Miles was forced to go with true freshman Jordan Jefferson.

Jefferson, although limited in knowledge of the playbook, was what the Tigers needed: a dual threat quarterback and playmaker.

Jefferson heads into the season as the starting quarterback and should give the offense opportunities to keep other teams guessing. With all that said, he is still, to some degree, unproven.

Heads or tails?

Heads, Jefferson continues his growth in all related spectrums of becoming a top LSU quarterback…or tails, he takes one step forward, maybe two steps back, and the LSU offense never gets any momentum or continuity?

Just based on what I’ve learned about his leadership ability…I’ll call heads.

Tiger Football is on the prowl again and is looking to rebound from last year's disappointments.

Heads say they will...tails say they won't.

You call it.

Bengal Banter: Bill Gates, Starbucks, Sasquatch, and the Space Needle

If you check any of the LSU Tiger Football web sites, you’ll find official countdowns have already begun. Dandy Don’s site is my favorite to keep up with all things Tiger; 98 days and counting.

90 plus days from now, the LSU Football team will be get on a plane and head toward the Pacific Northwest, to the ‘Emerald City’ to be exact. The Tigers 09’ season will begin on the road…away from home…a long way from home—over 2,500 miles away from home.

“You’re a long way from home my little pretty!” scene from the Wizard of Oz comes to mind.

From my research, and someone help me if I’m wrong, LSU has never played an away game to open the season so far from home…ever.

In the last 20 years, the furthest LSU ever traveled to open the season was to Arizona St. in 2005; the infamous year of Katrina in which LSU was to originally host the Sun Devils.

Since the 1989 season, LSU has played only 8 away games.

The Tigers played away games at Texas A&M in 89’, 93’, and 95’, Georgia in 91’, Virginia Tech in 02’, Arizona St. in 05’, and Miss. St. in 07’.

The furthest of all these games was at Arizona St. in which the Tigers struggled greatly to beat the Sun Devils 35-31. LSU was losing 17-7 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

If not for LSU’s defense and special teams play, and a last minute TD pass from JaMarcus Russell to Early Doucet, the Tigers would have opened the season with a loss, and the debut of the Les Miles era would have been spoiled.

Road wins have been tough to come by on opening day for the Tigers. The bad news is that LSU is 0-5 from 1989-2002. The good news is that they are 2-0 from 2005-2007.

The question is how well will the Tigers play opening the season so far from home?

Also to consider is the preseason rankings, LSU is 2-2 on opening away games when ranked.

Ranked preseason at No. 7, the Tigers lost to Texas A&M in 89’, and were ranked No. 14 in a loss at Virginia Tech in 02’.

The wins however, were against aforementioned Arizona St. in 05’ when the Tigers opened with a No. 5 ranking and against Miss. St. in 07’ with a No. 2 preseason ranking.

LSU has been previewed and predicted to start the 09’ season in the top 15, and predicting a win on the road is a toss-up considering their past history.

What LSU does have in its favor going to Seattle to play the U. of Washington is that Huskies are opening the year under a new head coach, and are coming off of a nightmare season going 0-12.

U-Dub new head coach Steve Sarkisian has yet to prove himself as a head coach, but was considered to be a hot commodity coming from University of Southern Cal as their dynamic head offensive coordinator.

The Huskies precipitous slide from grace was hung on Ty Willingham’s tenure, but little notion is pointed to the fact that injuries have plagued the program. But the slide has been long and hard for Washington.

The last five years, the Huskies have won only 12 games, and last season’s winless campaign stands as the lowest point in the long and storied history of the program.

What LSU has going against them is not only the longest road trip in school history, (it’s going to take two plus days for the equipment truck to get there driving practically non-stop) but the fact that Washington does have a lot of talent and are hungry to right the ship.

Couple that with a new coach who’s looking to punch the Tigers in the mouth to begin his reign, LSU is in for a very competitive game.

If LSU is hungrier, and if the defense lives up to a Chavis coached D, the Huskies will be in for a long night. Sarkisian will keep it interesting with his offensive schemes, but the Tigers should prevail.

Side note—if any Tiger fan happens to venture west for the game, Washington fans are really nice and do a phenomenal ‘up-town’ tailgating scene.

Around the stadium is average at best, but if you’re blessed to sail (no Bass Boats mind you) up to Husky Stadium while enjoying Dungeness crab or wild salmon while sipping from a crystal goblet, a decent cabernet wine, is one of college football's finest experiences.

Bengal Banter: Hollywood Goes to LSU

"Goin’ to the picture-show," was one of the greatest statements that my paw-paw would say that sent my happy meter well past overload.

I absolutely loved to go to the movies…especially with my grandfather.

Movies have become such a big part of our lives for most of us. It’s a chance to let go and unwind; the chance to be entertained and to live, if not just for a few moments, in a world that’s not our own.

That got me to thinking. If Hollywood wanted to film a movie about LSU football, who would they cast as the coach?

It would depend on the era, but I thought of three actors who could play the part of three well known LSU Football coaches.

There’s no one more well known than former LSU Coach Charles McClendon. Sorry Nick, you didn’t stay long enough.

"Cholly Mac" was the man!

He was coach for the Tigers when I was a kid, and it was this era that I fell in love with LSU Football. Paul Dietzel hand picked Coach Mac to take over when he left.

Coach led some of the finest LSU teams during his tenure which spanned for over 18 years. He is a legend and hero among many Louisianians.

Who in the world could play this saint?

It sounds a bit "sacrilegious," but based on looks alone, I think a younger Randy Quaid would be a great choice.

You know, Randy Quaid. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Days of Thunder, and Independence Day to name just a few films he’s been in.

Quaid is most known for his comedy rolls, but he has been cast in several parts that call for a more realistic and drama focused character during his career.

A younger Quaid would be a perfect match for the late great, younger "Cholly Mac."

Another LSU Coach who has a double as an actor is Mike Archer.

I know this is a tad bit of a stretch to visualize, but the guy who could play Coach Archer would be Jeffrey Jones.

Your like…"WHO?"

Ed Rooney, you know…Ferris Bueller’s Principal in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

If you make Ed Rooney a tad bit thinner and darker hair that is combed back…you got Mike Archer.

Now, I personally don’t have a big soft spot in my heart for Coach Archer. He came in replacing Bill Arnsparger which had LSU faithful madder than a *%&^#.

Especially since there were a few coaches...you may have heard of some of these names who were candidates? Just maybe?

Steve Spurrier.

Mike Shanahan.

Mack Brown.

Yes...they may sound familiar. I’ll say it again. "Reportedly," Steve Spurrier, Mike Shanahan, and Mack Brown.

Does the phrase "Hindsight is 20/20" come to mind? What was Bill thinking?

But Arnsparger "hired" Ferris Bueller’s Principal. Wow!!??!!

Lastly, we have Coach Les Miles.

Coach Miles has a look that's great on film and could most likely play himself, but Hollywood would most likely go professional here and go with Kurt Russell as their main guy who gets the roll.

Kurt Russell, you know: Escape From New York, Goldy Hawn's Beau?

You cut Kurt’s hair, add a little movie magic on the hairline, and you got Coach Miles.

Don't forget the hat...it has to fit snug.

Russell's not just all looks; he could even do a wonderful job portraying Coach Miles Persona.

I could see the take now.

Scene: Press conference Atlanta. SEC championship game. Take One...Action!

“There was some misinformation on ESPN and I think it’s imperative that I straighten it out. (pause - Camera pans in for face shot)

I am the head coach at LSU. (steely glare)

I will be the head coach at LSU. I have no interest in talking to anybody else. I’ve got a championship game to play, and I am excited about the opportunity of my damn strong football team to play in it. (Squint, Flex Jaw Muscles)

That’s really all I’d like to say. It was unfortunate that I had to address my team with this information this morning. (Stare)

With that being done, I think we’d be ready to play. There will be no questions for me. I represent me in this issue. Please ask me after. I’m busy. Thank you very much. Have a great day.” (Pause, Flex Jaw Slightly, Squint, and Turn to walk)

You see what I’m saying. Kurt could play that part to a tee!!!

I wonder if Martin Scorsese is busy?

See you at the movies.

Bengal Banter: Three Teams LSU Fans Love to Hate

LSU football traditions run deep and wide on the bayou.

From the Tiger Band performing "Hold that Tiger," the legendary tailgaitin’ parties, to the hometown white jerseys...LSU fans can’t get enough of LSU Football.

With that love comes a strong dislike, a healthy respect mind you; but a hate none the less for three teams in particular.

There are definitely some honorable mentions such as Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Auburn.

But the teams that most LSU fans love to hate are: USC (Univ. of So Cal), Tulane, and Alabama.

Let’s begin with USC.

Why in the world does the LSU fan hate Tommy Trojan so much?

Well, besides the obvious, the biggest reason is that LSU had to share the 2003 National Championship with them.

LSU won the BCS; USC won the AP.

The year that an LSU Alum bought some billboard space next to the campus of USC to advertise that it takes more than one championship to be considered a dynasty, was classic.

You should have heard sports talk radio around here when that happened.

LSU was referenced as "hillbillies" and all sorts of southern slang.

Most die hard LSU fans can’t wait to do a home-in-home with USC. I’m not sure why the ADs don’t come to terms on this game?

USC says that they will play anyone and anywhere, but from what gets reported, USC has not entertained the possibility to my knowledge.

You may not know this, but even here in L.A., USC has a reputation for being the school all the rich spoiled kids go.

BMWs, old money, and daddy’s credit card.

The movie Legally Blonde may come to mind?

Nonetheless, LSU fan hates USC and can’t wait to see the Trojans in Death Valley.

What an epic game that would be.

Next on the list is Tulane.

I know...I know.

Tulane has fallen off the map with the intensity of hate, but there is a "dislike" that still runs deep with most of the "older" LSU fans.

Did I just call myself old?

One of the best games I remember going to was a night game in the mid 80’s against Tulane.

I can’t remember all the details, but the game was over by halftime and a fight broke out on the field.

Next thing you know, there were fights in the stands.

I saw a guy carrying a cooler of beer get knocked down and his cooler went flying down the steps. In a blink of an eye, the only thing left was the ice.

Needless to say, all hell broke loose.

I was with my stepfather who just so happened to be one of the bystanders who grabbed one of those "loose" beers, and yelled to me in a long slur—“I’m going to hit somebody!"

By that time the police blocked all the exits, so pops didn’t get to use his "can of courage" that night.

Although the LSU/Tulane games have just begun again the last couple of years, I don’t foresee the bad blood that was so common between them to spark again.

These are different times than the past.

Tulane is a great school, but their persona of being more of a "blue blood" school and LSU as more the blue collar type was the foundation of hatred.

Sprinkle in a good dose of "good-ole boy" politics and socio-economic differences, and you had a feud for the making.

No matter what things are like now, "Green Wave" is still a four letter word with some old time LSU fans.

And lastly, The Alabama Crimson Tide.

I know Bama fan would argue the "Les Miles, Nick Saban" issue right about now, but that's not the case.

I remember vividly as a kid the strong dislike LSU fans had for Alabama. That hatred has grown more with the Miles, Saban ordeal, but it existed long before them.

Now Alabama fan, I know you want to pipe up here and give us Tiger fans a litany of reasons why "we" hate you so much, but the truth is—we dislike your arrogance.

I know...you want to point your finger at us for that same transgression.

But Alabama fan, your arrogance goes beyond any arrogance that I’ve witnessed before.

It’s like you have the mentality of cult followers, and Bear Bryant is the Emperor and Nick Saban is Darth Vader—Ready and able to destroy the whole galaxy of college football at will.

Yes, we hate that Nick left...but we’re over it.

Les is a "damn strong" coach and a great recruiter. As far as I know, you haven’t taken anyone from our state that we absolutely wanted.

So Crimson Tide fan, of all the teams we Tiger fans dislike, you take the cake.

You’re the most disliked team that we play.

And you may find this strange, but the dislike we have for each other is what makes the SEC the best "damn" league in the galaxy.

Geaux Tigers!!

City of Angels: No Heaven for an LSU Aficionado

In the sleepy little town of St. Francisville, Louisiana, I often remember as a kid, the times sitting under the carport of a simple little house on Pine Street, listening to my Paw Paw tell stories.

For hours my brother and I would sit under his spell as he would spare no detail to paint with words the great adventures and mischief he enjoyed as a youth. We would laugh and laugh.

As a cigarette hung from the corner of his lips, he soulfully spun tales that inspired us to explore on our own, potential ideas to try at the most opportune time.

Many of which became the scaffold to countless ‘wood-shed’ discussions that still make me wince even today.

But those stories and the time spent with my grandfather are gifts I now muse about with great love and affection. They were moments etched in my life that have become woven into the fabric of who I became, and what I am today...never to be separated or changed.

Within my fabric, many lifetime moments represent many threads of color that define me.

Family, friends, and a collage of memories have all blended to mend a suit of color that is comfortable and unmistakably me.

Two colors that shimmer in the stitching of this suit are all too familiar to LSU fans. How did these colors get there? They don’t exactly match with the other colors from my life?

Los Angeles California—very diverse colors indeed.

Baton Rouge to L.A. is a complicated road to retravel. The twists and turns certainly add much depth and character to the detail of fabric which glistens with complexity, yet with unassuming drapes of simpleness.

There is contrast that is difficult to define yet recognizable—soft to the eye, but rough to the touch.

There’s a label on the fabric; “Made in Louisiana - Altered in L.A.”

As I sit in grid lock on the 405, or sit through a ‘trimmer’ wondering about the ‘big one,’ there is a constant that I draw near that feeds my homesickness.

My morning is so predictable when the Dell crackles to life.

A dose of Dandy Don, the Baton Rouge Advocate, and Tigerbait.com while sipping a ‘damn strong’ cup of coffee, adds yet another thread of LSU to my life.

Purple and Gold run through me, and living so far from what made me me, is not so heavenly. Sure, the ‘Left Coast’ has incredible weather, and the sites are great to brag about, and so many do come here to make their dreams come true.

But paradise is over-rated. Give me humidity, Community (Coffee), and a beignet any day...while sittin’ with family and friends talking Tiger Football. That’s living among those who share a lot of common threads. That’s heaven.

Kansas City 'Tigers' Pick LSU's Jackson

The Kasas City Chiefs are fast becoming the next home away from home for many LSU star players in the NFL. Glenn Dorsey, Rudy Niswanger, Dwayne Bowe, and Travis Daniels will be seeing a familiar face this fall.

Defensive end Tyson Jackson was selected as the third pick by the Kansas City Chiefs. Jackson headlines a list of at least ten former LSU football players who have a shot at getting their named called this weekend as the NFL Draft takes place on Saturday and Sunday in New York City.

With Jackson’s pick, it will stretch LSU’s streak of consecutive years with a first round selection to six. LSU has had at least one player taken in the first round of the NFL Draft dating back to the 2004 draft when Michael Clayton was the 15th overall player taken by Tampa Bay.

LSU will also be the only school to take over the nation’s longest active streak of consecutive years with a first round pick surpassing Miami who are expected not to have a first round selection for the first time since 1995.

Jackson’s stock in the draft began to climb significantly, and attributes his success to hard work.

“We’ve all worked very hard to get to this point” Tyson Jackson said of his preparation in getting to the NFL. “It’s just a mind-blowing experience to know that I came from a small 2A school to LSU and went against some of the best guys in the country in practice and worked really hard to beat out those guys.”

“I can look back at my career and know that hard work has always paid off. I always rely on that in my time playing football.”

LSU Spring Game 2009: What Do We Know Now?

Super Tiger Weekend created a big metaphorical cloud of dust this weekend on the campus of LSU by showcasing many Tiger programs which included the LSU baseball, softball, tennis, and track programs.

The crown jewel of course, which drew close to 36,000 fans, was the LSU Spring Game.

Now that the dust has settled, is there anything we can look at with anticipation and hope to expect from these Tigers going into the fall?

1. No matter what you think of Les Miles, he’s a great coach:

When you look at the talent that ran around in Death Valley yesterday you can’t help but notice all the young talent Miles and his staff have brought into the program.

Nick Saban has got nothing on Miles and that’s scary good news for Tiger fan.

2. Charles Scott is the real deal:

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear whispers about Mr. Heisman again this year.

He looked faster and nastier than ever yesterday, running for 70 yards with 11 carries. You could tell Scott had a great off-season in the workout room.

"Chuck the Truck" will be ready to haul in the fall for sure.

3. Jordon Jefferson will be the starting QB, end of story:

By completing eight of 10 passes for 97 yards and throwing 2 touchdowns, you can see Jefferson is comfortable as the 'go-to-guy'.

Jefferson has a mature, steady, and confident demeanor about him that fits well with his natural leadership abilities.

If he can stay healthy and continue to get better, don’t be surprised if this kid gets national attention by the end of the year.

4. Russell Shepard is going to cause a lot of trouble for opposing teams this year:

Dual QB’s at LSU have seemed to be a matter of choice for offensive coordinator Gary Crowton.

I would imagine that this year you’ll see the Jefferson—Shepard combo, and it should be very exciting. Shepard is electrifying; he’s a “did you see that” kind of a guy.

Shepard will be fun to watch.

5. The defense is going to be good; really good:

Coach Chavis has these guys going downhill on every play. As much as I love to hear the Tiger Band play "Touchdown for LSU", I love the "Bandits" song even more.

More "Bandits" along with "Touchdown for LSU" renditions during the regular season, should lead to a 'Peachy' December. Geaux Tigah's

LSU Football Under the Micro-Scope: Five Tigers Clawing Their Way Up

Spelling "Team" with an "I" is one of the first no-no’s you learn when playing a group sport. Star Treks’ Spock said it best: “the needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few.”

Loosely translated? There’s no room for prima-donnas.

The sacrifice and price you pay on every wind sprint, every sled drill, and every blow both given and taken, are for the team. Self becomes last; your family of brothers come before you, your stats, and your press.

With that said, there are always a group of men who will shine a little brighter on the gridiron, and for Tiger Nation and the 2009 football season, I look for these five players to roar a bit louder this year and prove to be invaluable to the success of the Tiger’s quest for a stellar season.

Drake Nevis

When you hear the name Glenn Dorsey, you picture a T-Rex in purple and gold…mean, nasty, and hungry to eat every play that was in front of him.

What does Dorsey have to do with big Drake Nevis?

Dorsey, on several occasions, was singing praises to Nevis mid-way through his senior season for his "motor" and tenacity. Tiger Nation was hoping for "Baby Dorsey" to pick up where he left off.

That never happened—at least not yet.

Nevis seemed to get in the "dog-house" of sorts with the coaching staff; the same coaching staff that is no longer the coaching staff.

Nevis did have to deal with some injuries, but never seemed to get back in the graces of Peveto and Mallory.

Now that the defense has a new general, Nevis is born-again.

"I feel great right now," Nevis said. "I'm having fun every day with the coaching. I really like the experience these coaches bring. These coaches are very focused and they have a lot of intensity on the practice field."

If John "Chief" Chavis is the new general, his colonel is Brick Haley and Nevis digs Brick—Mr. Brick of course.

"I'm glad with my progress," Nevis recently said. "If not for coach (Haley), I would not be better. Coach Haley has a great attitude. He's been a blessing to me with the experience he has."

Will Nevis realize his "Dorsey-like" potential this year?

I wish I had that crystal ball, but I don’t. Until then, we have to wait and see. So cliché I know—but so true.

My money is on Nevis to bring a lot of thunder and lightning on the D-line this year. Look for double digit sacs and hurries this year. Baby T-Rex will be ready to eat.

Jacob Cutrera

The time has finally come for Jacob Cutrera to move to the big boy’s table in becoming the starting middle linebacker.

With Darry Beckwith having graduated, Cutrera looks to make his mark.

"I am definitely looking forward to this season," Cutrera said. "I have one year to go. I am looking forward to making it the best. It's been a good spring for me so far. I'm fine. I've stayed healthy."

Cutrera has been impressive this spring and has Defensive Coordinator Chavis impressed with his skill, work ethic, and determination.

Although making a lot of noise his first year on special teams by racking-up 20 tackles his first year, Cutrera has not thoroughly lived-up to his potential the last few season due to injuries.

"Injuries are one thing you can't do anything about," Cutrera said. "But, I don't regret anything that has happened to me at LSU. It has been a great experience for me."

Look for Cutrera’s experience to be that much better now that "Chief" has the defensive reigns. After LSU was embarrassed many times last year, Cutrera had a lot to say about what different this year compared to last.

"There are a few tweaks for the linebackers. We are going to be more downhill than in the past. We want to stop the run first and the pass second."

Cutrera added also that: “the makeup of the players is different. You can see it in the players' eyes. There is a different demeanor. I am sure the defense will be considerably better. I like what we're doing at spring. There is fire in our eyes."

If that fire stays hot, look for Cutrera and Co. to wreck many opponents’ game plans.

T-Bob Hebert

Anyone who goes by T-Bob is a guy I want to play on my team. Just his name alone is one that conjures up a vision of a guy who is big, mean, and an overall nasty fella’ on an offensive line.

Hebert who was the second overall rated center coming out of high school, red-shirted his freshman season in 07’, and now is projected to replace two outstanding centers from years past in Brett Helms and Ryan Miller.

Needless to say, he has some big shoes to fill.

The road to the starting center position has been a bit rocky however. Hebert has had to overcome and rehab from a knee injury from last year against the Gamecocks.

"I was running down on a punt against South Carolina," Hebert said. "I planted my foot. It stayed put and my leg turned. So, I hurt my knee."

The recovery process is ahead of schedule and has been much faster than expected. Hebert is practicing and doing everything except for full-contact "live" drills. He expects to be in contention for the starting position and excited for the opportunity.

“It is fun trying to win a job," Hebert said. "Mentally, I feel more confident now with what I'm doing. I have more of a grasp of the offense. Coach (Greg) Stud, Brett, and Ryan really helped me last season."

Keep up the good work Hebert.

I’m sure I speak for all Tiger faithful: we can’t wait to see that massive Hebert Tiger Jersey casting a shadow over the football on Saturdays.

Terrance Toliver

Toliver, who is coming off a very positive and productive second half of the 2008 season, is ready to show why he should be one of the nation’s best receivers along with team mate Brandon LaFell.

Maturation and confidence has been a process, but the speed of the game compared to high school can be a big adjustment for even the best of athletes.

"The pace of the game in the SEC is real fast," Toliver said. "It doesn't slow down. You have to work hard all the time and you have to learn the playbook. When Early (Doucet) got hurt my freshman year, they moved me around. That was tough."

Now that Toliver is coming into his junior season, he is exuding the confidence on the practice field that has him expecting a break-out season.

"I'm ready to be the best receiver I can be," Toliver said. "I want to help the team be better. Our receiving group is coming along. I am so excited. I'm ready for this year.

"The main thing I'm working on is focusing and finishing. I want to finish off plays and finish off blocks. I don't want to take one down off."

When confidence meets expectations, don’t be surprised to see Toliver be the X-receiver who will keep many defensive coordinators up later than they would like Friday nights this fall.

Charles Alexander

Alexander was an all-state player from Breaux Bridge High School. His redshirt freshman season lasted only one game.

Alexander made one tackle in the 2005 season opener at Arizona State only to sit-out the rest of the season due to a foot injury suffered during practice the following week.

Nagging injuries to his foot, ankle, and knee have kept him from realizing his potential as one of the best defensive lineman in the nation.

Alexander was having a great 2007 until the knee injury in the fourth week of practice. He never quite recovered to full health during the '07 campaign and was looking to improve in 2008. That improvement never materialized.

Because Alexander has been plagued with several injuries, the NCAA granted him a sixth year of eligibility. This year, he looks to contribute greatly to the Tiger’s defense.

"I have unfinished business here,” Alexander said referring to his sixth year of eligibility, and being the new old man on campus.

“I'm the new Kirston Pittman. I'll be 23-years-old when the season starts and will turn 24 during the year."

Remember, age is best viewed as wisdom and Alexander should bring much wisdom to the table. He also will bring a much greater tenacity.

When you factor in the new defensive coaching which has revitalized many players, his last year, and his health, there is no limit to his impact on the d-line.

"I had a scope after the Chick-fil-A Bowl," Alexander said. "I'm full-go right now. I feel like I'm at 100 percent. I just have to get better each day. Pretty soon, I'll be back to my old self."

If Alexander can sustain his "old self" for a whole season, that is bad news for whoever has to block No. 91—happy hunting Mr. Alexander.

Happy hunting Tigers—God’s speed in 2009.

The Not-So-Good, the Bad, and the Ugly—The 10 Worst People in Sports

Was Charles Barkley right when he in his 1993 TV commercial informed America that parents should be the role models for their children and not superstar athletes who flaunt all the fame, fortune, and celebrity status in little Johnny's face?

Good role models are hard to find these days. Preachers, politicians, and even normal folks are making the news for their lying, cheatin', pimpin', thuggin', drug-abusing, and alcoholic wife-beaten ways.

Here are 10 people in the sports world who we can thank for making our world a better place - and teaching our youth of today that's it's ok to be a dirt-bag.

The 2009 LSU Football Season Review: 12 Games,12 Predictions

April brings to mind nice things; spring break, rainy days, and the ever popular Easter Egg Hunt. But to most die-hard college football fans, April brings to mind spring football practice and expectations of how their team will fare in the upcoming season.

LSU Football did not look like LSU Football last year. A mediocre year at best was characterized by an 8-5 record and a dismal 3-5 SEC record. The most promising note was the Peach Bowl win against No. 14 Georgia Tech, who were highly favored.

With the emergence of true freshman quarterback Jordan Jefferson, the Tigers ended the season with a dominating win over the Yellow Jackets by a score of 38-3, but more importantly, Jefferson’s leadership unified the team and brought back a swagger that was missing after going through some tough losses earlier in the year.

Now that the past is behind them, the LSU Bayou Bengals look to bring back the "Eye of the Tiger" for the 2009 season. With a new defense led by new D-Coordinator John Chavis, and the high-octane offense led by Gary Crowton, LSU should make some noise nationally if they can take care of business.

The business that is scheduled is as follows: Washington, Vanderbilt, UL-Lafayette, Mississippi St., Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Tulane, Alabama, Louisiana Tech, Ole Miss, and Arkansas; 12 Games – 12 ‘golden’ opportunities – 12 Predictions.

1. LSU vs. Washington, Sept. 5 (Away)

Although Washington went 0-12 last year under Ty Willingham, this is not an ‘In-the-bag’ win for LSU. The Huskies hired the red hot Steve Sarkisian who was USC’s Offensive Coordinator.

Sarkisian worked under highly regarded Norm Chow from 2001-04 at USC who was instrumental in coaching a highly explosive pro-style offense. Don’t be surprised to see a much better Husky team in Seattle to welcome the Tigers. With that said, look for LSU to make this a defensive statement game on national TV. LSU 42 – Washington 0

2. LSU vs. Vanderbilt, Sept. 12 (Home)

LSU will open at home at Death Valley with the new and improved Commodores. Vandy finished with a 7-6 record and a better SEC record than LSU. Vandy also had some impressive wins against very good teams such as South Carolina, Ole Miss, and a 16-14 win against Boston College in the Music City Bowl.

Vandy will keep it close in the first quarter, but LSU’s depth and athleticism will take over on both sides of the ball. LSU 35 – Vandy 13

3. LSU vs. UL-Lafayette, Sept. 19 (Home)

The Ragin' Cajuns finished 08' with a sub-par season going 6-6, but don’t let their record fool you. With LSU being the Mecca of Louisiana football, smaller programs like UL-Lafayette, typically have kids with a big chip on their shoulders for not being recruited by LSU, hence a bitterness and hunger to kill the proverbial Goliath.

The Cajuns have some big shoes to fill from last year with having to replace Sr. QB Michael Desormeaux, who rushed for 1,035 yards and threw for more than 1,800 in 2008.

They also lost four-time 1,000-yard rusher Tyrell Fenroy and receiver Jason Chery, who caught a team-high 46 passes for 656 yards and seven touchdowns. Bottom Line: LSU too big, too fast, too many athletes. LSU 41 – Cajuns 10

4. LSU vs. Mississippi State, Sept. 26 (Away)

The Mississippi State team (4-8 in 2008) will be under new coach Dan Mullen. This hire had Bulldog Nation tilting their heads like a cow does looking at a new gate. How does a New Hampshire native end-up in the land of cow bells?

Maybe that Gator magic will rub-off on the Bulldogs? Although Mullen has no head coaching experience, he may have what it takes to breathe some life into the program after working under Urban Meyer as his Offensive Coordinator for four years.

Mullen is noted as having coached some high-profile players, such as Alex Smith, Josh Harris, Chris Leak, and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.

LSU beat Mississippi State last year 34-24 and it was much closer than the score may indicate. Look for LSU’s defense to be much nastier against the Dogs, and with new coaches and new schemes; should give the Tigers a big advantage. LSU 37 – Mississippi State 17

5. LSU vs. Georgia, Oct. 3 (Away)

This game will most likely be played on CBS with an early kick-off and should be the first huge test for LSU. Note: Those of us who are Tiger fans understand the hate we have for day games; it’s almost as much as we hate Nick Saban.

Well, I don’t hate Saban per se, but I do hate day games, home or away. With that said, Mark Richt’s 2008 team underachieved last year.

A 10-3 record was not what most fans were hoping for. Georgia was preseason ranked No. 1 and many had them winning the SEC and a national title.

Underachieved? Tell that to LSU who got blasted by the Bulldogs 52-38. Look for LSU to give a big heap of payback to the Dogs. The game should be close in score, but the Tigers will dominate on both sides of the ball. LSU 24 – Georgia 17

6. LSU vs. Florida, Oct. 10 (Home)

Speaking of pay-back, the Tigers will need to keep the wounds fresh coming off a big game against Georgia with having to take on the defending national champions and Sr. QB Tim Tebow and Co.

Florida dismantled the Tigers in the Swamp last year 51-21. Note: LSU fan, keep Tebow’s cell number to yourself this year and don’t bother the guy. No need to motivate him.

Key factors: Florida will be highly favored in this game but games against Middle Tennessee, Troy, Tennessee, and Kentucky, might be enough fluff to keep the Gators dull. If the game is at night in Death Valley, the place will be rockin’ and give the Tigers some extra motivation.

As much offense as both squads will have, look for an old-fashioned defensive fight. No blow-out by Florida this year but Tebow may be too much for the Tigers after a tough Georgia game the week before. Florida 31 – LSU 30

7. LSU vs. Auburn, Oct. 24 (Home)

Although this game is not typically hyped nationally as a rivalry game, the LSU-Auburn game has been as close to a rivalry as you can get without calling it one.

You have the ‘Earthquake Game’ in 1988; the ‘Barn Burning Game’ in 1996; the last second catch by LSU wide receiver Demetrius Byrd from QB Matt Flynn in 2007 that kept LSU’s title hopes alive; and last year’s come-from-behind win by QB Jarred Lee.

The LSU-Auburn game seems to always be a game with a lot of drama so it will most likely continue this year.

Auburn faithful are not too happy with the new hire in Gene Chizik. There must have been more to the story as to why Tommy Tuberville was let go. Nevertheless, the game between LSU and Auburn will still be a grudge match which may come down to who has the ball last.

However, with LSU having a bye week, it should give the Tigers an extra week to lick their wounds and recoup from the Georgia and Florida games. This game will not be as close as years past. LSU 27 – Auburn 14

8. LSU vs. Tulane, Oct. 31 (Home)

Homecoming on Halloween night in Tiger Stadium against Tulane...can you say party night? It will be crazy that night. The game should be a for-sure win for the Tigers.

Sorry Bob, you’re doing a great job down there in New Orleans, but your boys will not fare well on this night. Too much mojo happening. LSU 52 – Tulane 14

9. LSU vs. Alabama, Nov. 7 (Away)

The Tigers should be well rested for Tricky Nick’s Tide. Alabama will be without John Parker Wilson at QB this season. Star Jackson will be competing against Greg McElroy for the starting QB position.

Nick Saban has had to throw-down the gauntlet this year by suspending Sr. Linebackers Brandon Fanney and Prince Hall from the team for an undisclosed reason.

Coach Saban has publicly addressed any notion that Alabama Football has not ‘arrived’ – alluding to the arrogance of thought as to how well the team did last year and how they will do this season.

Last year was a great year, up until the end when they were beat by Utah in the Sugar Bowl. Alabama Nation is anticipating a ‘building’ year on offense and a killer defense which has nine returning starters...eight if Fanney doesn’t return?

Although this game is in Tuscaloosa, LSU will come out on top. The defenses should off-set each other and I give the nod to the Tigers for Gary Crowton coming up with a great game plan to outscheme Saban to spoil all the myopic Bama fans day. A lot of empty Tide boxes and rolls of toilet paper go to waste. LSU 17 – Alabama 14

10. LSU vs. Louisiana Tech, Nov. 14 (Home)

Okay, this game has the potential to be a let-down game due to playing Alabama the week before. The key word is ‘could’, but it will not. LSU would have to have a major Crimson-Tide hangover to throw this game away.

The Bulldogs were 8-5 last year and had a win over Mississippi State 22-14. I think that was the game that sealed Sylvester Croom’s decision to leave?

With Tech fitting into the ‘mid-major’ slipper, LSU should have a great scrimmage with Ole Miss on the horizon the following week. LSU 45 – Louisiana Tech 10

11. LSU vs. Ole Miss, Nov. 21 (Away)

The Grove will be popping and the Preacher; Houston Nutt should have his boys primed to play them Tigas’ come a beautiful fall afternoon. The Rebels were not picked last year to make as much noise as they did.

Finishing the year with a 9-4 season with a win in the Swamp against the Florida Gators and a win in the Cotton Bowl over the highly touted 11-1 Texas Tech team, has many ‘experts’ picking Ole Miss as high as No. 9 in the preseason.

LSU was stunned by the Rebels 31-13 last year and if this game has LSU with only one loss to Florida, and the Rebels with a 9-1 record (A loss to Alabama), things should be interesting.

This could be the best SEC West game this year. Look for ‘The Hat’ to do a whole lot of gambling in this game and edge out the mighty Rebels. LSU 24 – Ole Miss 21

12. LSU vs. Arkansas, Nov. 28 (Home).

It’s time for the ‘Boot’ Trophy to come back home where it belongs. The Tigers lost a heart-breaker last year to the Razorbacks 31-30. However, the Hogs are not going so wild in Little Rock.

Bobby Petrino has his work cut out for him with coming off a 5-7 season. Look for more of the same, unfortunately. With the SEC fast becoming a league of the ‘haves and the have nutts’, Arkansas has a ways to go in convincing the ‘blue chippers’ to come to Razor Nation. I wouldn’t be surprised if Petrino hasn’t sent out ‘the vibe’ for another job – it’s only a matter of time.

Look for LSU to dot their ‘eye’ and cross their ‘T’s’ for this game and put it away early. Atlanta – here we come. LSU 35 – Arkansas 17

Bottom Line: If the 2009 LSU Tigers can keep the same chip on their shoulders that is there now for how poorly they played last year, I look for the Tigers to put the pressure on the whole league and return to Atlanta Dec. 5 and play the Florida Gators for the SEC Championship Game.

SEC Championship Prediction: We’ll cross that bridge when they get there. Geaux Tigers!

LSU Football: Defense Will Lead to Another “Ship”

Most die hard college football fans that bleed their favorite team’s colors are all giddy with excitement for the upcoming 2009 college football season.

The talk around the water cooler is a bit longer. The local sports talk shows are crackling with spring practice news and results.

With a new season, brings to life new hope and new goals for each program.

LSU is no exception.

It was hard to watch how the Tigers fell from glory after being crowned national champions the year before. I can’t tell you how many TV remotes I had to replace, but as I sat there and witnessed the failure, I knew that LSU is committed to winning and change would be imminent in the offseason.

The biggest change that will have an immediate impact on the Bayou Bengal's quest for excellence, was the hiring of John "Chief" Chavis.

When Bo Pellini was hired as head coach at Nebraska, I think there was an underlining amount of concern among Tiger faithful. Pellini brought a fire and a "take no prisoner" type of an approach. It was his way or no way.

That fire was lost when co-defensive coordinators Bradley Dale Peveto and Doug Mallory took the reigns. Both coaches were outstanding, but were clearly out coached last year. The defense, in comparison to the past Pellini led squads, looked confused and sluggish.

Not that having Jared Lee throwing a pick every possession had anything to do with that, but the Tigers were not themselves to say the least. Many a game against SEC foes I would sit there and wonder if Tulane body snatched some of our best players.

The double mint defensive coordinators who based their defensive scheme on the game "Battleship"—C4? Miss!—complicated the objective. Seek and destroy is the objective—has been and always will be.

Coach Chavis will get these Tigers on track to do some major damage on Saturdays.

Defensive lineman Charles Alexander said that this year with coach Chavis has been even more intense that Pellini's system.

That could mean trouble for LSU opponents.

Coach Chavis is streamlining the defense and if history is representative of his former squads—more "tools in the shed," regarding LSU's overall speed, size, and talent—it should mean bigger results than he experienced with Tennessee.

The world of college football may witness a resurgence of the "Chinese Bandits."

LSU averaged over 31 points per game last year. Pepper in a stingy, nasty defense, you got the making of another run to the "Ship."

Geaux Tigers!

Tennessee Recruit Bryce Brown: On a Mission From God

A small but sizable ripple was felt today in the recruiting waters of college football.

The coveted top-ranked tailback Bryce Brown, who de-committed from the University of Miami, is now going to play for Tennessee.

Brown’s commitment pushed Tennessee’s recruiting class into the top 10 with both Rivals and Scout class rankings.

The much-criticized first-year coach Lane Kiffin had a lot to crow about.

"We believe the addition of Bryce Brown improves an already great class. To be able to sign the No. 1 player in the country before we even play our first game speaks volumes for our great university and this coaching staff."

Brown’s de-commitment is nothing new to the world of recruiting. It has unfortunately become more of an epidemic in the last few years and has many coaches at odds with the "system."

Recently, an article written by Andy Staples with Sports Illustrated spoke to an anonymous BCS coach about the pains of the current recruiting challenges.

“I asked about some of the ills plaguing recruiting, and he groused that a commitment isn't a commitment anymore. 'They're just making a reservation,'" he said. "Hold the scholarship for me until I find something better.'.”

Staples goes on to mention in his article that there’s a double-edged sword.

“If the player reneges on his commitment, fans and media paint him as a flake. If the coach finds someone better and yanks the offer, the press destroys him, and he'll struggle to win the trust of future recruits.”

It’s not just the coaches who are frustrated, either. Even Brown’s father was not very happy about his son’s recruiting experience.

"I would say to a recruit, do not commit. If you commit to a university, be absolutely beyond a shadow of a doubt sure that you don't need to see another university. And let that be your stance. If you have the need to visit other schools, do not verbally commit."

You can’t really blame the kids though. The media attention and hype that now surrounds college recruiting has turned a much hallowed and significant moment for a student-athlete into a dog-and-pony show.

Press conferences now attract multi-million dollar media outlets to carry live their decision on who the lucky university will be?

I get it, I understand it, but it’s grotesque. Even Brown today, when making his choice, played the audience as to where he would go with the "take the hat out of the bag" routine.

What makes this more shameful is that Brown has connected a Holy preface as to why he chose Tennessee.

"I've come up with some goals and plans for the future. I plan on holding seminars where I can talk to recruits and help them make spiritual decisions."

As a follower of Christ and born again believer myself, I totally understand the need to follow where the Lord leads.

But to throw pearls at the feet of swine by publically announcing your step-by-step program to help future recruits be led by God to choose a college to play football is disingenuous and ignorant.

WWJD? – I doubt He would hold a "seminar."

LSU 2009 Spring Practice: Different Vibe Brings New Excitement

As the Earth’s axis tilts more towards the sun and the length of daylight increases, the hemisphere begins to warm significantly, causing new life and growth.

Bitter cold is fainting, darkness is less gripping, and the melting of hopelessness brings much needed waters to give new hope the opportunity to bloom.

Spring—a time to put to death the past…a time to move forward towards life.

The LSU Fighting Tigers look to do just that.

Last year’s accomplishments were disappointing. Although utterly dismantling Georgia Tech in the Peach bowl, the Tigers were never firing on all cylinders, especially on defense.

Side bar—I’m sorry; I can’t bring myself to call bowls by their sponsor names. It’s the worst thing that sports owners have done in allowing companies to slap their names on the building. What’s next, Tiger Stadium being changed to Community Coffee Stadium? I think not.

Nevertheless, the defense was a mess and in chaos, the quarterback situation was scary, and frustration looked to have taken root in the teams’ psyche.

That was then—that is not now.

The 2009 Bayou Bengals have started spring practices with fewer questions from a year ago.

Jordan Jefferson at quarterback is a lock. Rarely do you see the type of poise, ability, and leadership in a freshman as we all witnessed last season. This kid is the real deal. I would not be surprised if he is a household name across the nation when the 2009 season is done.

New Defensive Coordinator “Chief” John Chavis has brought in a scheme and there is an intensity that’s more evident this year.

Defensive tackle Charles Alexander said it best: "Thursday's practice set the tempo for the season. All the players gave great effort. All of these coaches are going to get after you. 7-5 doesn't cut it here. We're trying to be the best team in the land. There is more to achieve with these coaches and this kind of talent."

These Tigers are hungry to prove they are the best team in the country this season. They have a chip on their shoulders and rightly so.

"We're mad," senior offensive tackle Ciron Black said.

"A fire has been lit under us. The coaches are going crazy. Coach (Les) Miles reiterated on the first day of practice that guys are going to be flying around."

Only time will tell if these Tigers are for real, but make no mistake. Growth is obvious—new life has begun.

Alabama Fan Goes Berserk on LSU Fans, Leaving Two Dead

There has been much volley of blogs between the LSU faithful and Alabama fans due to the two schools' recent rivalry since former Tiger, now current Bama head coach Nick Saban left Baton Rouge.

There has been little spared in the heated discussions that have surfaced between the two fan bases, but tragedy struck as an apparent argument turned to bloodshed.

Dennis James Smith, 41, and Donna Kaye Hall Smith, 39, of Brewton, Alabama were shot to death by Michael W. Williams, 28, about 7 p.m. Saturday in the rural community of Owassa in southern Alabama.

Police are still investigating the motive but witnesses say that the shooting was due to an argument of the recent LSU-Alabama game.

I’ve heard of fan loyalty, but this reaches an all-time low.

As tragic as it may be, the fact is that you never know who your going to upset when your standing up for your hometown team.

And I thought blogging was dangerous.

Saban vs. Miles: The New Hayes-Schembechler Rivalry

One of the most, if not the biggest rivalries in the history of college football, was between the two legendary Big 10 programs in Ohio State and Michigan.

The rivalry is still considered by most college football fans as one of the most popular but more so out of its history, and not so much for the match-up currently. Buckeye and Wolverine fan would argue that point but the fact is, it’s not the same as back in the old days.

Ohio St. legendary coach Woody Hayes and Michigan legendary coach Bo Schembechler became icons for these programs as they led their teams into many heated years of battle.

The winner each year was most likely to compete for the national title and make the trip to Pasadena. The Rose Bowl was considered to be the grand daddy of bowls. Pure majesty in PAC-10 vs. Big Ten champions.

That luster of pageantry is now clouded by the BCS Bowl System but the shift to a new and upcoming rivalry that is brewing in the SEC is between Alabama head coach, Nick Saban, and LSU head coach, Les Miles.

Saban has ties with Ohio St and Miles with Michigan. Although the two don’t share the same similarities in the Hayes-Schembechler relationship, the Alabama/LSU game is fast becoming a clone of the past.

What are the ingredients that the Tide and Tiger rivalry share with Buckeye and Wolverine match-up?

1. One heap of drama; The Coach Factor. You must have a tie-in or a sub-plot as to why the two coaches should dislike each other. Somehow the two have to have a connection to each others program. Hayes was at one time Schembechler coach and mentor. Saban was LSU’s first love, the one who resurrected the program. Now he’s at Alabama. You get the picture.

2. One large poll; The Hurdle Factor. Your rival must prove to be the wall in which you must jump to enter into the promise land. The Michigan or Ohio St. victor historically played for the Big 10 Championship and a possible national champion. The Tide and Tiger victor is looking to be the same for the SEC West Championship in the future. We won’t go into the whole BCS issue.

3. A ton of loyalty; The Fan Factor. Each programs school must have a healthy hatred for one another. I’ve heard many stories about Ohio St. and Michigan fans. Once I heard that an Ohio St. fan who was visiting Michigan needed gas in his car but wouldn’t stop until he crossed the state border. Alabama and Louisiana don’t border each other but if they did, I’m sure it would be similar.

There is much football to be played until an Alabama/LSU rivalry is to be compared to the historic Ohio St/Michigan legacy, but there’s one thing for sure, the Miles-Saban saga is just getting warmed up.

Tide, Tigers, and Playground Scrapes - A Little Tiger in a Crimson World

With the Alabama/LSU game fast approaching, I have had the opportunity to read a number of articles written by loyal Alabama fans on B/R who insist on bringing up the same tired, old, and used up reasons why LSU is losing.

If I hear another take on how “Saban’s recruits” no longer have an imprint on the LSU program, and that Les Miles is driving the program that Nick built into the ground, I'm going to stick a sharp object in my eye.

As one of my distinguished colleagues on B/R just recently eluded to is that any true well educated LSU fan should not fall for the bait any longer. Getting sucked into that mindless banter is foolish at best.

However, the thought of how Alabama fan baits LSU fan brought to mind a few comparisons that I have noticed about the two fan bases—and much more.

Where I'd like to focus my attention is on the ‘much more’ part. But first, I must settle the confusion about how I, being a devout LSU fan, would have any credibility as to having any knowledge about the Alabama fan?

Although born in Baton Rouge and having lived there for a good deal of my life, I also lived in Alabama for nearly six years—Alabaster, Alabama to be exact—Thompson Elementary, Jr. High, and High School.

Satisfied?

Funny thing is, that while brainstorming and remembering some of the characteristics of what I think the typical Alabama fan personifies verses the typical LSU fan, I uncovered some apparent childhood memories that I had forgotten while living there.

Needless to say, living in Alabama as a young Tiger fan during that time gave me the thrill and blessing of having to settle many arguments about LSU on the playground in a compelling, sensible manner.

I had my fill of knuckle sandwiches back in the day. But don’t worry my fellow Tiger brothers and sisters; I was known to make a pretty good sandwich as well and I gave them out willingly and generously.

The Bible does teach that it’s always better to give, than to receive right? Amen!?

Much was learned during those scuffles. It brings to mind a whole new meaning of “taking one for the team,” and as it turned out, I took a lot of em'.

It wasn’t long until every kid knew that the big kid from Louisiana was talking smack and not backing down. I was the LSU prophet. The message was clear and distinct.

“We’re finally going to beat the ‘H’ out of Alabama this year!”

I’m sure you can imagine that my preaching was not well received and often ignored which was mostly due to LSU's win/loss record against the Tide.

Speaking of Tide—what's the deal with the whole Tide detergent box with a roll of toilet paper on top hat? Dude, for real?

Anyway, pretty soon, every event that I participated in during my elementary years was seen by my peers as a way to challenge not just me. It was a way to challenge my beloved LSU Tigers.

If I lost a pick-up basketball game that was one-on-one; It wasn’t me who lost, it was LSU who lost. If I scored a touch down in flag football, it wasn’t my team who scored, it was LSU.

There were times on plays where I could be thrown the ball and my friend wouldn’t pass it to me because they didn’t want to hear about how LSU just scored again on Alabama.

One game could go on for weeks. There was never a consensus winner.

The challenges were soon not limited to just the playground. The classroom soon became Death Valley. If I did better on a test than one of my classmates; LSU won—if I got a lower grade, Alabama won.

I’m sure my teachers were so happy that I was so involved in my grades with having absolutely no idea as to what was truly going on. “That Dale Weaver is such a conscientious student.” Yes sir, I was.

What great memories that I had nearly forgotten.

Thank you myopic delusional Alabama fan for helping me rediscover a once lost treasure in recollecting a small piece of heaven for a young boy who is a Louisiana State University Football fanatic.

I loved sticking up for my team; I loved sticking up for my LSU Tigers.

By the way Alabama fan, “We” just scored again! Geaux Tigers!
