Chargers-Colts: Mighty Mouse, Mighty Heart

The underdog and undermanned San Diego Chargers pulled off an unlikely upset of the favored Indianapolis Colts and MVP Peyton Mannning for the second year in a row in walk-off fashion, thanks to the lightning bug that is Darren Sproles.

At 5'6", 181lbs, San Diego Chargers running back Darren Sproles might just be the smallest player in the NFL. But on Saturday night, he proved to have the largest impact and biggest heart of any player on the field.

Sproles proved to be a one-man wrecking crew, totaling 328 all purpose yards through punt and kick returns as well through the air and ground, culminating in a 22-yard, game-winning touchdown run.

Sproles was called upon to perform due to the injuries suffered by All Pro running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who put up a valiant effort, playing on a detached groin tendon, an injury that may require surgery and one that Jerome Bettis, who suffered the same injury, said that he could barely walk from.

Tomlinson finished with 25 yards on five carries and one score but left the game for good after his second quarter touchdown, unable to endure any longer.

Chargers superstar tight end, Antonio Gates, who had not practiced all week and was questionable for the game as well, performed admirably, playing on an injured ankle, totaling eight receptions for 87 yards, including several key third-down conversions.

But perhaps the biggest performance was that of Chargers punter Mike Scifres, who pinned the Colts deep inside their own 20 on all six of his punts, five of them inside the 10. Scifres also punted for a playoff record 51.7 net average, including a game-changing 67 yard punt that pinned the Colts at their own five-yard line.

Scifre's biggest punt, however, came with the Chargers trailing 17-14, with three minutes left on the clock. From his own 46, Scifres drilled a punt landed on the one-yard line and promptly bounced out of bounds, pinning Peyton Manning and the potent Colts offense into a hole of which they never climbed out of.

It was not the big-name superstars that one might expect when looking on paper that won the game for the Chargers, it was, however, a diminutive running back with the heart the size of San Diego County, feet as fast as lightning, and perhaps the greatest punting performance in the history of the game, that had the Bolts jolting the Colts from the playoffs for the second straight year.

San Diego Chargers Cruise to Division Crown, Improbable Run Continues

What was hyped to be an AFC West shootout turned out to be a lopsided affair, the Chargers armed with a six-shooter, the Broncos a super soaker.

It was a historic night in San Diego, with polar opposite outcomes. The Broncos season grinded to a merciful stop as they capped off what just might be the greatest collapse in NFL history.

With a three game lead over the Chargers, with three to go, their magic number at one, the Denver Broncos failed to win any of their three remaining games, including a huge upset against the Buffalo Bills last week at Invesco Field.

The Chargers, on the other hand, completed what may be the greatest comeback in terms of the regular season, in NFL history.

Left for dead four weeks ago, reeling from a 22-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and sitting at 4-8, the Chargers remained united despite their dire situation and reeled off four straight wins, capping off the most improbable of runs with a 52-21 thrashing of their hated rivals, the Denver Broncos.

The Chargers were able to continue their hot streak as the teamed turned out their most balanced performance of the season, as the team ran for a franchise record 289 yards, with Philip Rivers throwing for an additional 207 yards.

The Denver Broncos, whose season was mired by injuries will now have a whole offseason to stir over their collapse and what could have been, as they will not be appearing in the post season for the third consecutive year.

The San Diego Chargers, who captured their third straight AFC West Crown and fourth in the last five years, now turn their attention to 12-4 Indianapolis, as the two teams will face off next Saturday night in a contest that will feature the two hottest teams going into the postseason, the Chargers winners of four straight, the Colts, nine, in what promises to be a fair fight.

Philip Rivers: A Case For the MVP

With the San Diego Chargers playoff hopes back from life support to not only being alive, but thriving, it is time to come out and say it: Philip Rivers is deserving of the MVP.

Yes, what seemed like blasphemy a mere three weeks ago could indeed become actuality as Philip Rivers has led his team back from 4-8 to a winner-take-all, de facto playoff game this Sunday vs.the Broncos.

He is currently playing the best ball of his career and despite the horrendous start by the Chargers team, he has been able to keep the team together, and rally behind him as their vocal leader.

My case for Philip Rivers does not go without evidence to support it and it is not as if Rivers has not played at an MVP caliber level this season. In fact in a season in which their is no clear MVP, Rivers has played the best statistical season for a quarterback, pro bowl votes be damned.

The Case for Philip Rivers

with a win vs Denver, he will have led his team from 4-8 to its third straight Division Championship

leads the league in TDs (32)

leads league in QB Rating (by 7 points, 104.>Pennington's 96.4)

leads league in 1st down %

with 200 yds on Sunday will have thrown for 4000 yds this season

top 5 in yds

9th in Comp. %

The evidence for Rivers is strong as he is playing the best ball of any quarterback in the league right now. With one more win, his team will be the No. 4 seed and a division winner, and the only negative against him would be his team's record, which could not be solely put on River's shoulders. The Steelers, Panthers, and Broncos all beat the Chargers with go ahead scores within the last 30 seconds of the game.

So in a season with no clear cut, far away choice for MVP, why not No. 17? Why not the quarterback and leader of one of the hottest teams in the league? Why not the brash, cocky kid from Alabama? Why not Philip Rivers?

Chargers-Buccaneers: Cinderella Stays Alive As San Diego Tops Tampa Bay

For 55 heart-pounding minutes, the San Diego Chargers sweated out a do-or-die matchup vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and in the end the dream was still alive, for the time being.

Leading 34-24 late in the fourth quarter, the San Diego Chargers clinched win No. 7 as rookie CB Antione Cason returned a Jeff Garcia interception 59 yards to go ahead 41-24 and decide the game for good.

However, a jubilant Chargers team solemnly boarded their plane ride home, knowing they would have to count on the Buffalo Bills to pull an upset over the Denver Broncos to keep their playoff hopes alive.

An anxious Chargers team waited out a long plane ride, having no possible way of seeing the Bills-Broncos score, only picking the game up on radio and an ESPNews tracker (ESPNews is not allowed to televise in-game action). Then, over the Gulf of Mexico, the radio went out, and all heads turned to the televisions.

With one blip on the television screen, an ear-splitting roar, audible from midair to downtown San Diego, was let out from the plane as the final score was announced: Bills 30, Broncos 23. Players screamed, 6'7" 330lbs L.T. Marcus McNeil stood up in his chair and C Nick Hardwick ripped off his shirt. The dream was still alive.

Now, with one game to go, the San Diego Chargers have their chance. A roller-coaster regular season will conclude Sunday night, as the 7-8 Chargers take on the 8-7 Denver Broncos for a winner-take-all shot at the division crown and a home game in the playoffs.

Three weeks ago, the San Diego Chargers were 4-8 and ready to run Head Coach Norv Turner out of town. Rumors that he had lost the team, and media, both local and national, were calling it a season and counting down the days until he would be fired.

Now, the Cinderella San Diego Chargers enter the playoffs a week early, courtesy of a Christmas gift of the Buffalo Bills, and a miracle comeback win vs. the Chiefs a week prior. Indeed, it hasn't struck midnight after all.

Michael Phelps: The Quest To Be The Greatest Olympian Ever

Michael Phelps, the most dominate swimmer of our time (he has set a total of 25 world records) who may only be comparable to Tiger Woods in golf, is a man on a mission in Beijing.

Phelps, who became the youngest person ever to compete at the Olympic Games in swimming at age 15 in 2000, is a seasoned Olympic veteran. And, although he did not medal in 2000 (he finished 5th in the 200m Butterfly), the year 2000 can be marked as the beginning point of his stranglehold on Olympic Swimming.

Following the 2000 Olympics, Phelps went on to become the youngest man ever (at 15 years and nine months) to set a swimming world record in the 200m Butterfly. Phelps went onto to set new records and break his own up until the 2004 Games in Athens.

There in Athens, Phelps set his sights on Mark Spitz's Olympic Record of seven golds in a single Olympic Games. Phelps would be competing in eight events, enough to break Spitz's record. However, Phelps fell just short of this goal, capturing six golds and two bronze.

Following the 2004 Olympics, Phelps has set 11 world records (although, as of right now, he holds just six because he has broken his own world records), all in an attempt to prepare himself for his greatest challenge yet—Beijing.

Beijing is Michael Phelps chance at immortality. Phelps, who already owns six gold medals, will have a shot to capture eight yet again, and in doing so, he will put himself on the single greatest Olympic performace of all time.

Phelps is almost assuredly going to become the owner of the most gold medals by any individual, as the current one is nine and is held by Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis, and Larissa Latynina.

But, at what cost? Phelps will be competing in 17 races overall in just nine days' time. Now, us ordinary folk have no idea of even conteplating what toll that will have on the body. How's this for you—Phelps will swim a total of thirty miles, and in doing so, he will burn nine marathons worth of calories in the course of the Games.

The tournament will not only be physically draining, but mentally as well. The drug testing and media frenzy alone is enough to drive anyone wild, let alone the 17 races. Phelps admitted that his demanding schedule in the 2004 games caused him to feel overwhelmed and snap at his coaches.

But, Phelps feels better prepared for these games, both physically and mentally. Phelps realizes the task at hand and also realizes that he may just do what many had thought was impossible—eight golds.

Michael Phelps loves doubt. He loves to be questioned. He loves to do what many consider impossible, unthinkable, and he's got his best shot ever to prove the doubters wrong and shock the world again in Beijing.

If Michael Phelps is able to pull it off and bring home eight golds, all doubt will be erased, all questioners silence. For no one could doubt or question that Michael Phelps would be the greatest Olympian of all time.

Red Sox Send Ramirez To The Dodgers

And so the saga ends. No, not the Brett Favre one, that one is just starting.

The Associated Press is reporting that right before today's trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox have traded disgruntled slugger to the L.A. Dodgers in a three team deal.

The Red Sox, Dodgers, and Pirates have exchanged players that leaves Manny in LA, Pirates LF Jason Bay in Boston, and the Pirates with four young, but still unnamed players.

After a deal that would involve the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins stalled, the two teams were left seeking a third partner, and found one in the Dodgers.

So Manny is going to be Manny on a different coast now, in a different league, in a different uniform. Few could have foretold a few weeks ago that Manny and the Red Sox would reach this point.

Sure, every so often we would hear that Manny is upset and we would see him calling someone on his cell phone in the Green Monster. But that was just Manny being Manny. And the Red Sox would put up with him as long as he would continue to produce.

But now things have reached the breaking point, as the Red Sox finally shipped their wacky star 3,000 miles away to a team coached by former Yankees manager Joe Torre.

The Dodgers got the big bat and the big show that they wanted, the Red Sox got a great LF without the headache in exchage for the other one, and the Pirates got the young talent they want.

What remains to be seen is how Manny reacts to this trade, and whether or not the Dodgers big risk will end in big reward. But you can be sure of one thing: in a new environment, in a new park, and surrounded by new teammates, Manny will still be Manny.

The San Diego Chargers' Five Biggest Questions

With training camp just under way, and the preseason right around the corner, hopes have never been higher in sunny San Diego.

And why shouldn't they be? The Chargers are coming off a season that saw them advance further than they had ever done since their Super Bowl season of '94 and they won their first playoff game in over a decade.

But like all teams around the league, the Chargers need to address certain questions about their team if they hope to be making a February visit to Tampa Bay.

Here my five burning questions the Chargers need to answer before the start of the season, if they hope to make this season as "Super" as they hope to.

1. Who will be the third cornerback?

The Situation

With the departure of talented, but mistake prone, CB Drayton Florence to Jacksonville, and the two starting CB jobs locked up by Quentin Jammer and Antonio Cromartie, the Chargers need to find out who will be the third CB early on, so that they can get as much time with the first team as possible, in preparation for the season.

Why It Matters

The Chargers have established themselves as part of the NFL's elite, joining New England and Indianapolis, respectively. It is these two teams that make the need to find the third CB so urgent. Both of these teams have a trio of talented receivers and like to use them as often as they can.

If the Chargers hope to advance to the big game, they will need to beat at least one, if not both, of these teams to get there. The right corner will go a long way to accomplishing that.

The Candidates

Antoine Cason

Cason, the big-play corner from Arizona, was the Chargers' first-round pick in last April's draft, and he has really impressed the coaching staff in offseason workouts. Cason just ended a short holdout and was there for the first full-team practice. He figures to run with the first-team defense and is the lead candidate for the job. If he does win the battle, the Chargers' defense will feature three first-round cornerbacks.

Paul Oliver

Oliver was a fourth-round supplemental draft pick for the Chargers in 2007. Oliver saw limited time in preseason and was relegated to the practice squad. Oliver has made strides this offseason, while impressing the coaches. Oliver is also seeing time as the backup safety.

Cletis Gordon

Gordon, a three-year undrafted veteran saw the most playing time of his career last season, as he contributed on special teams and saw time at corner in certain situations last year. Gordon, whose nickname is "Flash", has the ideal size and speed to play corner, though his lack of experience hurts him.

The Winner: Antoine Cason

The Chargers didn't draft him in the first round if they weren't going to play him. Expect for him to see a lot of time in preseason and be the third corner on opening day.

2. Who is backing up L.T.?

The Situation

With "the best backup in the NFL" Michael Turner gone to Atlanta, the Chargers have a large void to fill behind the human cyborg that is LaDainian Tomlinson.

Why It Matters

With LaDainian Tomlinson suffering the first injury of his career—and he's not getting any younger—they need a competent backup to come in and spell him when needed. L.T.'s most important carries will be taking place in the postseason, and the Chargers would like to make sure their star is fresh for the playoffs. They don't want him taking any unnecessary damage.

The Candidates

Darren Sproles

Sproles is a special-teams ace that proved he was a threat to take it all the way last season. Just ask the Colts. Sproles has blazing speed, but is too undersized—5'6", 180lbs—to be the bruising backup the Chargers need to wear down defenses when L.T. wants a breath. While Sproles will play an important part in the Chargers' offense, don't expect him to be the pounding defenses in the middle while L.T. is on the sideline.

Jacob Hester

The Chargers gave up a lot to take Jacob Hester in the third round of last April's draft, but the team considers him worth it. Hester impressed scouts and coaches with his versatility, as he can do anything asked of him: catch, run, block. Hester fits very well into Norv Turner's offense, which requires a pass-catching H-back, and Hester figures to be that guy. Hester also has the size to pound the middle and wear defenses down.

Marcus Thomas

The fifth-round pick out of UTEP proved himself an effective runner, as well as receiver. Like Hester, Thomas has the size the Chargers want at 6'2", 215lbs. The Chargers hope Thomas has as much success as the last fifth-round back they picked, one Michael Turner.

The Winner: All of Them

The Chargers figure to use a running-back-by-committee approach to their backup situation. Sproles and Hester will both play special teams and can be used effectively on offense in certain situations. Meanwhile, Thomas shows similarities to Michael Turner (besides the initials) and figures to have a part in the offense as well.

3. Who replaces Stephen Cooper?

The Situation

Starting MLB Stephen Cooper is out with a four-game suspension for testing positive for a recently banned stimulant. His absence leaves one of the opening spots open for the first month of the season.

Why It Matters

The linebackers are the strength of the Chargers' defense, and Cooper's production (he led the team with 179 tackles last year) will be hard to replace. The 3-4 defense goes as far as their front seven goes, and without Cooper, the entire defense could suffer. They need to find an adequate replacement in time for the start of the season.

The Candidates

Derek Smith

Smith, one of the Chargers' two free-agent signings has the veteran experience the Chargers need to fill Cooper's role. He also has experience in the 3-4, as he started for the 49ers the past year.

Anthony Waters

The Chargers' 2006 third-round draft pick has first-round talent, but he missed all of last year with an injury he suffered in college. Waters was recently put onto the Chargers' PUP list because of recent surgery on his knee. While Waters has the talent to start, him missing time because of the surgery hurts his chances to start on opening day.

The Winner: Derek Smith

With his starting experience and veteran leadership Smith is the safe choice and the most likely to win the job.

4. Is Jeromey Clary the answer at RT?

The Situation

Former starter Shane Olivea was let go in the offseason and signed with the Giants. Unproven Jeromey Clary will take his place on one of the most talented offensive lines in football.

Why It Matters

Everyone knows the game is won in the trenches, and the elite teams usually have the best lines in the game. If Clary is unable to do the job the Chargers expect him to do, the whole offense, and the team's Super Bowl hopes, may suffer because of it.

What To Expect

After several disappointing performances, Olivea was replaced by Clary, who started all three playoff games. He performed well in all three contests and has thus proven to be capable of starting. Don't expect him to miss a beat. He should continue where he left off.

5. The Injuries

The Situation

Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, LaDainian Tomlinson, Nick Hardwick, Jamal Williams, and Nate Kaeding all are coming off injuries, and everyone, except Kaeding, required surgery. All six of theses players are starters and play at a Pro-Bowl-caliber level.

Why It Matters

If any of these players are slowed by injury, the team will take a huge step back. Everyone except Rivers is considered as a top-three performer at their respective position, while Rivers is at least top 10 and the vocal leader of the team.

What To Expect

Tomlinson, Rivers, and Kaeding are all reportedly back to a 100 percent and are better than ever. Jamal Williams is easing his way back into practice, as he only participates in certain drills, and he conditions when he sits out of one. He expects to be back to 100 percent by the season opener.

Gates and Hardwick are where the most concern lies. Gates is reportedly making a faster recovery than expected and could be ready for the start of the season. Hardwick is healing at the rate expected of him and could also be available for the opener, although it is unlikely.

The more likely situation is that he could miss up to the first month of the season, possibly returning in the sixth week. Jeremy Newberry was brought in to fill in for Hardwick if he is unable to go.

The Great Debate: The Greatest NFL Head Coaches Of All Time

Football is one of the most complex sports played today. Sure the rules are simple enough, and the point of the game isn't too hard to understand. Get the ball across your end zone, you score points. Score more points than the other team, you win.

But there are those men who exploit the game, take full advantage of its rules and are able to bend full grown men to their will, orchestrating players like pawns in a game of chess.

These men know the ins and outs of this game, they know every minute detail of the game. They are generals commanding their men, doing everything in their power to reach their ultimate goal: winning.

Few of these men, the very elite of them, are able to change the game forever in a way not though possible before their time. They are able to revolutionize this game, which in its most primitive form is merely men throwing themselves at each other, into something so complex, they turn it into a science.

Those are the men that we will look at today, the men who prowl the sidelines, barking out orders like drill sergeants. Today we determine just who is, the Greatest NFL Head Coach of All Time.

The Candidates

Tom Landry (Dallas Cowboys 1960-1988) Record: 270-178-6, Two Titles

"Leadership is getting someone to do what they don't want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve."

Landry got his start as the defensive coordinator for the Giants in 1956. While there he built one of the best defenses in all of football. In 1960 he was hired as the first ever coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Landry and the Cowboys got off to a rough start, as the team didn't win more than five games his first five years.

Despite the bad start Landry and the Cowboys when onto to post 20 consecutive winning seasons from 1966-1985. During this time the Cowboys won two Super Bowls, five NFC Titles, and 13 Division Titles, totaling a 270-178-6 record.

Landry also invented the 4-3 Defense (which is employed by the majority of teams today), the Flex Defense, the use of keys (analyzing offensive tendencies), and popularized the man-in motion, the shotgun formation, and the use of offensive shifts.

Landry's 20 career-postseason victories ranks as the most all time by and Head Coach.

Vince Lombardi (Packers 1959-1967, Redskins 1969) Record: 105-35-7, Five Titles

"Winning isn't everything. It's the only thing."

Lombardi, the Super Bowl Trophy's namesake got his first Head Coaching job in 1959, with the Green Bay Packers. Lombardi quickly turned the Packers (who a year prior went 1-10-1) into perennial winners as they never suffered a losing season during Lombardi's tenure.

Lombardi went 9-1 in the postseason, and won five titles in seven years, including three straight championships from 1965-1967, including the first two Super Bowls, a feat still unmatched.

After stepping down as the Packers coach in 1967 (although he stayed on as GM for the 1968 season) Lombardi returned to coaching for the 1969 season, as Head Coach of the Washington Redskins. the Redskins went 7-5-2, breaking the team's run of 14 consecutive losing seasons.

In 1970 Lombardi was diagnosed with intestinal cancer and passed away ten weeks later. Lombardi is one of the most popular coaches of all time. During his tenure with the Packers he was turned into the face of the NFL.

He is renowned for motivational skills and getting the best out of his players. Lombardi is also credited for creating the zone blocking scheme.

Chuck Noll (Pittsburgh Steelers 1969-1991) Record: 209-156-1, Four Titles

“Before you can win a game, you have to not lose it.”

Chuck Noll was hired as the Steelers Head Coach in 1969. Noll took the 4-3 defense he ran as coordinator of the Baltimore Colts and quickly built one of the most dominating defenses of all time and created the NFL's first modern dynasty, winning four super bowls from 1975-1980.

Noll built this dynasty through the draft, selecting four Hall of Famers in the 1974 draft alone. Noll's Steel Curtain defense remains one of the most talented defenses of all time.

Chuck Noll is renowned for giving African Americans the chance to succeed in the NFL. Under Noll, Joe Gilliam became the first African American to start in the NFL, Franco Harris became the first African American to win the Super Bowl MVP, and gave Tony Dungy his first NFL coaching job.

Don Shula (Colts 1963-1969,Dolphins 1970-1995) Record: 347-173-6, Two Titles

"The superior man blames himself. The inferior man blames others."

Despite Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots latest attempt, Don Shula remains the only coach to lead his team to an undefeated season.

Shula was hired by the Colts at the age of 33, and lead them to a 71-23-4 record in his seven years as coach. Shula struggled in the postseason early on in his career, losing two Championship games, despite being the favorites.

Throughout his career, Shula used a pragmatic approach, changing his philosophy to suit the players he had. Despite continued regular season success, Shula could never again win a Super Bowl following the 1973 season.

Shula holds many coaching records such as most victories (347), games coached (526), most consecutive seasons coached (33), and most super bowl losses (four). Shula's teams were consistently the least penalized in the league, a testament to his coaching discipline. Shula also served on the rules committee, helping change the league to one that was more pass oriented.

Bill Walsh (San Francisco 49ers 1979-1988) Record: 102-63-1, Three Titles

"In particular, they see the game the way I do and because of how i saw it."

Bill Walsh is often called a genius, which is a high praise for a man who drew up X's and O's for a living. But no word seems more fitting for what Bill Walsh did on the offensive side of the ball, it truly was genius.

Bill Walsh began his legendary career as an assistant with the Oakland Raiders. While there, he learned under the tutelage of Sid Gilliam, who trained him in the vertical passing offense. He later refined this technique to fit his horizontal passing scheme, incorporated in his legendary West Coast offense.

Walsh got his first and only Head Coaching job with the 49ers in 1979. The 49ers went 2-14 a year before Walsh took the job and repeated the same record his first year.

Two years later however the 49ers went on to win their first ever Super Bowl thanks to Joe Montana and the offenses mastery of Walsh's West Coast Offense, which had not been seen in the NFL prior to Walsh. Walsh and the 49ers went onto win two more Super Bowls after the 1981 season.

Besides the West Coast offense, Walsh is known for his large coaching tree which includes such coaches as: Dennis Green, Jim Fassel, Mike Holmgren, Brian Billick, John Gruden, Mike McCarthy, Mike Sherman, Steve Mariucci, John Fox, Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith, Mike Shanahan, Jeff Fisher, Gary Kubiak, among many others.

Conclusion

It comes down to two coaches in my opinion, them being Lombardi and Walsh. Lombardi's success is unmatched with five titles in seven years and a career win percentage of .750.

His influence on the game is also incredible, his name being on the Super Bowl Trophy should say it all. Coaches long to raise the Lombardi trophy, they strive to be like him.

Walsh also had tremendous success of his own. Three Super Bowls in the free agent era is also remarkable, even more so when you consider how far apart they were.

Walsh's influence on the game is bar none, as numerous successful coaches fall into his tree and his West Coast offense passing game is widely credited for advancing the passing game in the NFL, and is still in use in today's passing oriented game.

For his profound influence on the game and his tremendous success I name Bill Walsh as the greatest Head Coach of all time.

Verdict: Bill Walsh

All Charged Up: The San Diego Chargers Week In Review

It's been an unusually busy week in sunny San Diego, as a flurry of transactions has occurred within the past week. The Chargers parted ways with a veteran wide receiver, extended the contract of a valuable member of their defense, and welcomed a new member into their fold.

Eric Parker

Six-year veteran wide receiver Eric Parker was released Wednesday afternoon after the team failed to find a suitable trade partner for him. The Chargers had been seeking a trade for sometime now as depth at the wide receiver position has emerged, making Parker expendable.

Parker missed all of last year after breaking his sesamoid bone in his big toe. Parker, an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee, spent his entire career in San Diego. He had 187 receptions, 2,586 yards, and 11 TDs before being released Wednesday.

Luis Castillo

The Chargers continue to lock up their young talent, as they extended the contract of talented defensive end Luis Castillo. Castillo signed a five-year, $43 million extension on Wednesday, ensuring that he will remain a Charger until at least 2014. Castillo is the 13th Charger starter signed through 2010.

Antione Cason

The Chargers' first-round pick, cornerback Antione Cason, ended his three-day holdout on Thursday. He became the first pick between No. 19 and No. 29, and the first cornerback, to sign from April's draft.

He will report to camp today for the first full-team practice of Chargers training camp. The deal reportedly guarantees Cason $6 million a year and roughly $12 million through the course of the deal.

This is expected to be the most noise the Chargers make until the start of the season, as all 22 starting spots are settled.

The Great Debate: The Greatest Tight End of All Time

Welcome to the third installment of my Great Debate series. I have recently covered the quarterback and running back positions, and I continue with football as I examine the greatest to ever play at the tight-end position.

As the passing game has become the focal point of NFL offenses in recent years, we have seen the emergence of several elite pass-catching tight ends, putting up statistics rivaling those of the game's top receivers.

But receiving is not the only part that makes up the tight-end position, the best can also block at a high level, and that is what separates the best tight ends of all time from the ones that are merely big wide receivers.

In analysing the best tight ends of all time, I have narrowed the choices to five, they are as follows: Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Ozzie Newsome, Shannon Sharpe, and Kellen Winslow.

Antonio Gates TE, San Diego Chargers (2003-present)

Now, I admit this may be a bit premature for Gates, but the man is setting a record pace for receiving, and he is improving his blocking skills year by year. He is also a virtual lock for the Hall of Fame.

Gates burst onto the scene in 2003 as a former college basketball power forward who had not played football since high school. He has since gone on to take the NFL by storm, posing one of the toughest matchups for defensive coordinators to game-plan for.

Tony Gonzalez TE, Kansas City Chiefs (1997-present)

Gonzalez has been causing headaches for defensive coordinators for the past decade. He has been the primary receiving option for the Chiefs since the day he set foot in Arrowhead. Gonzo is on pace to hold every tight-end receiving record when he hangs them up.

Ozzie Newsome TE, Cleveland Browns (1978-1990)

The Browns selected Newsome 23rd overall, and he immediately produced for them. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999, Ozzie Newsome was elected to the Pro Bowl three times and ranks third among tight ends in career receptions.

Shannon Sharpe TE, Denver Broncos (1990-2003)

Shannon Sharpe is renowned for his big mouth, but his play was even bigger, as he dominated and taunted defenses throughout the '90s. When he retired, he held every major, receiving record for tight ends.

Kellen Winslow TE, San Diego Chargers (1979-1987)

Kellen Winslow was the main weapon in what has been called by many as the greatest offense in the history of the NFL, Air Coryell. Winslow revolutionized the tight-end position, becoming one of the first tight ends to be the go-to player in an offense.

How They Compare (Career)

Gates (5 Years, 77 Games): 340 Rec for 4,362 yds. with a 12.8 avg. and 43 TD

Gonzalez (11 Years, 174 Games): 820 rec for 9,882 yds. 12.1 avg and 73 TD

Newsome(13 Years, 198 Games): 662 rec for 7,980 yds. 12.1 avg and 47 TD

Sharpe (14 Years, 204 Games): 815 rec for 10,060 yds 12.3 avg and 62 TD

Winslow (9 Years, 109 Games): 541 rec for 6,741 yds 12.5 avg and 45 TD

How They Compare (Season)

Gates: 68 rec for 872 yds with a 12.8 avg and 8.6 TD

Gonzalez: 74 rec for 898 yds with a 12.1 avg and 6.6 TD

Newsome: 51 rec for 614 yds with a 12.0 avg and 3.6 TD

Sharpe: 58 rec for 718 yds with a 12.4 avg and 4.4 TD

Winslow: 60 rec for 749 yds with a 12.5 avg and 5 TD

How They Compare (Game)

Gates: 4.4 rec for 56.6 yds with a 12.9 avg and 0.56 TD

Gonzalez: 4.7 rec for 56.7 yds with a 12.0 avg and 0.42 TD

Newsome: 3.3 rec for 40.0 yds with a 12.1 avg and 0.24 TD

Sharpe: 4 rec for 49 yds with a 12.3 avg and 0.30 TD

Winslow: 5 rec for 61.8 yds with a 12.4 avg and 0.41 TD

Conclusion

All of these players have played within the last 25 years, so there isn't as much of a era gap between them. When he retires, Tony Gonzalez should hold every major, tight-end record due to his longevity. Antonio Gates, meanwhile, dominates in yards per catch and touchdowns, and he should make a run at Gonzalez's records.

Kellen Winslow produces the most receptions and yards per game vs. the other four. It is unfortunate that Winslow played so much less than any of the other players (besides Gates), if he had played 170+ games like the other three, he could very well have posted records that would be difficult for any other tight end to overcome.

Winslow made up for his lack of his appearances by making the largest impact he could in every game he played in. He completely changed the way the tight-end position was viewed, and he was the forefather for today's elite tight ends. It is for this reason that I name him the greatest tight end of all time.

Verdict: Kellen Winslow

The Great Debate: The Greatest Quarterback of All Time

There is no position more demanding in sports than that of the quarterback in professional football. No other position is measured by winning championships in a team game. They are measured by their individual stats, but not the quarterback.

They must know what every player is doing on every play, they must be able to read defenses and make clutch throw while 300-pound linemen and blitzing linebackers bear down upon them.

They are the face of the franchise, the leader of their team, and ultimately the win, or loss, falls squarely on their shoulders. Few are made tough enough to withstand the pressure that the quarterback must endure.

And who, you ask, are the best of the best at filling the role of the field general? Here are the five quarterbacks I considered for greatest of all time, in alphabetical order: John Elway, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, and Johnny Unitas.

John Elway, Denver Broncos (1983-1998)

John Elway was selected No. 1 overall in what is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback draft of all time. Elway is a nine-time Pro Bowler, 1987 MVP, and Super Bowl XXXIII MVP. He is widely regarded as the most clutch quarterback of all time, leading the Broncos on 45 game-tying or go-ahead scores.

Dan Marino, Miami Dolphins (1983-1999)

Dan Marino may be the greatest passer of all time (he ranks second in passes completed, pass attempts, pass attempts/game, passing yards, and passing TDs, as well as top five in numerous other categories) and has an extremely quick release. The only knock against Marino is his lack of Super Bowl rings.

Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts (1998-present)

Peyton Manning has been the top quarterback (yes, better than Brady) of the past decade. He is the leader of the perennial offensive juggernaut that is the Colts' offense, and he has hooked up for more TDs with Marvin Harrison than any other QB/WR combo ever. By the time he retires, Peyton could hold every major QB record.

Joe Montana, San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs (1979-1994)

Joe Montana, a three-time MVP and four-time Super Bowl MVP, came up big when it mattered most. Montana holds playoff records for TDs and passing yards, as well as others, and went 83-122 for 1,142 yards and 11 TDs, as well as an amazing zero interceptions, posting a QB rating of 127.8 in his Super Bowl appearances.

Johnny Unitas, Baltimore Colts, San Diego Chargers (1956-1973)

The "Golden Boy" was a nine-time All-Pro selection and three-time MVP. He led the Colts to the 1958 NFL Championship. Unitas completed touchdowns in 47 straight games, a record that has not even been approached by any QB since.

How They Fare Against Each Other (Career)

Elway (16 seasons, 234 games): 4,123 completions, 7,250 attempts for 51,475 yards and 300 TDs and 226 INTs (1.33:1 TD/INT ratio) 57 comp%, Super Bowl Victories: 2

Marino (17 seasons, 242 games): 4,967 completions, 8,358 attempts for 61,361 yards and 420 TDs and 252 INTs (1.67 TD/INT ratio) 59 comp%, Super Bowl Victories: 0

Manning (10 seasons 160 games): 3,468 completions, 5,405 attempts for 41,626 yards and 306 TDs and 153 INTs (2:1 TD/INT ratio) 64 comp%, Super Bowl Victories: 1

Montana (15 seasons 192 games): 3,409 completions, 5,391 attempts for 40,551 yards and 273 TDs and 139 INTs (1.96 TD/INT ratio) 63 comp%, Super Bowl Victories: 4

Unitas (18 seasons 211 games): 2,830 completions, 5,186 attempts for 40,239 yards and 290 TDs and 253 INTs (1.15 TD/INT ratio) 55 comp% Super Bowl Victories/Championships: 2

How They Fare Against Each Other (Season)

Elway: 257 completions, 453 attempts for 3,217 yards, 19 TDs and 14 INTs

Marino: 292 completions, 491 attempts for 3,609 yards, 25 TDs and 15 INTs

Manning: 347 completions, 541 attempts for 4,163 yards, 31 TDs and 15 INTs

Montana: 227 completions, 359 attempts for 2,703 yards, 18 TDs and 9 INTs

Unitas: 157 completions, 288 attempts for 2,236 yards, 16 TDs and 14 INTs

How They Fare Against Each Other (Game)

Elway: 17 completions, 31 attempts for 220 yards, 1.28 TDs and 0.97 INTs

Marino: 21 completions, 35 attempts for 254 yards, 1.74 TDs and 1.04 INTs

Manning: 22 completions, 34 attempts for 260 yards, 1.91 TDs and 0.96 INTs

Montana: 18 completions, 28 attempts for 211 yards, 1.42 TDs and 0.72 INTs

Unitas: 13 completions, 25 attempts for 191 yards, 1.37 TDs and 1.19 INTs

Conclusion

It is obvious by looking at the stats that the passing game is heavily affected by the era that the quarterback played in.

During Unitas' era, the passing game was second to the run, and when used was less imaginative than today's game. The rules of today also help the passer and protect the quarterback, as they are designed for a pass-happy league, whereas in yesteryear, there was hardly any limitation on what you could and could not do to a player.

Statistically speaking, Dan Marino is the greatest quarterback per career, while Manning is the greatest per season and game, with Montana in third.

But, as I said before, quarterbacks are measured by championships, and Marino's lack of a ring prevents him from earning the top spot.

Montana however was the face of a dynasty and is the consummate winner, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy four times. It is for this reason that Montana separates himself from everyone else and is, as of right now, the greatest quarterback to ever play.

Although if Peyton Manning can win another ring and continue his record-breaking play, he could very well take Montana's place.

Verdict: Joe Montana

The Great Debate: The Greatest Running Back of All Time

In the annals of professional football, there have been numerous great running backs. Some were built like tanks who powered through the middle of the field, blowing up defensive linemen and middle linebackers, while others used their agility and speed to blow right past their opposition.

All of them played like men among boys, each of them were clearly the best player every time they took the field. The play of these warriors of the gridiron has not surprisingly created a debate, one that is constantly discussed among football fanatics.

These are the five I will consider for the title of greatest running back of all time. In alphabetical order they are: Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, and LaDainian Tomlinson. Let the debate begin.

Jim Brown: Cleveland Browns (1957-1965)

It could be argued that no one player dominated the game the way Jim Brown did. At 6-foot-2. 230 pounds, he was as big or bigger than the defensive linemen he played against, and there was no one player who could take him down one-on-one. Brown loved contact and would wear out every defense he played. He combined size, speed, and explosiveness in a way that was unrivaled by any player at that time. Brown retired on top of his game at age 30, holding all major rushing records.

Walter Payton: Chicago Bears (1975-1987)

"Sweetness," as he was called, was just that: sweet. He could do it all on the field: run, catch, throw, even punt. Payton had great speed and hands, and a ferocious stiff arm he used to brush off defenders. When he retired, he was the all-time leader in rushing yards and touchdowns.

Barry Sanders: Detroit Lions (1989-1998)

Barry Sanders moved liked no other running back had before or since. What he did each and every Sunday was simply jaw dropping. He made professional athletes look stupid; no one could touch him. Sanders was consistently great. In each of the 10 years of his career, he ran for 1,000 yards or more. But despite his great production, he never experienced team success, but you can't blame Sanders for that, as the Lions haven't been good for five decades.

Emmitt Smith: Dallas Cowboys (1990-2004)

Emmitt Smith, the all-time rushing leader, is probably the most successful back of all time. The winner of three Super Bowls, Smith enjoyed more postseason activity than any other back on this list. Some of that may be due to the talent of the players around him, but Smith was key in getting his team to the Super Bowl and winning it. Smith had a prolific career, leading all running backs in touchdowns scored.

LaDainian Tomlinson: San Diego Chargers (2001-present)

The only active player on this list, LaDainian Tomlinson could be the single most productive player in NFL history. He is on pace to shatter every major rushing record. LT joined Eric Dickerson as the only players to start their careers with seven straight 1,200 yard seasons. During that stretch, Tomlinson has also scored 10 or more touchdowns in each season. Tomlinson may also be the best multi-purpose back of all time, rivaling Payton. He can catch, throw, and run, block better than most backs in the league and currently possesses the best stiff arm in the league.

How They Fare Against Each Other (Career)

Brown (9 years, 118 games): 2359 att 12312 yards 106 TDs, 262 rec 2499 yards 20 TDs, 2621 touches 14811 yds 126 TDs 57 Fumbles

Payton (13 years, 190 games): 3838 att 16726 yards 110 TDs, 492 rec 4538 yards 15 TDs, 4330 touches 21264 yards 125 TDs 86 Fumbles

Sanders (10 years, 153 games): 3062 att 15269 yards 99 TDs, 352 rec 2921 yards 10 TDs, 3414 touches 18190 yards 109 TDs 41 Fumbles

Smith (15 years, 226 games): 4409 att 18355 yards 164 TDs, 515 rec 3224 yards 11 TDs, 4924 touches 21579 yards 175 TDs 61 Fumbles

Tomlinson (7 years, 111 games): 2365 att 10650 yards 115 TDs, 458 rec 3375 14 TDs, 2823 touches 14025 yards 129 TDs 24 Fumbles

How They Fare Against Each Other (Season)

Brown: 262 att 1368 yards 12 TDs, 29 rec 278 yards 2 TDs, 291 touches 1646 yards 14 TDs 6 Fumbles

Payton: 295 att 1286 yards 8 TDs, 38 rec 349 yards 1 TD, 333 touches 1636 yards 10 TDs 7 Fumbles

Sanders: 306 att 1527 yards 10 TDs, 35 rec 292 yards 1 TD, 492 touches 1819 yards 11 TDs 4 Fumbles

Smith: 294 att 1224 yards 11 TDs, 34 rec 215 yards 1 TD, 328 touches 1439 yards 12 TDs 4 Fumbles

Tomlinson: 338 att 1521 yards 16 TDs, 65 rec 482 yards 2 TDs, 403 touches 2003 yards 18 TDs 3 Fumbles

How They Fare Against Each Other (Game)

Brown: 20 att 104 yards .9 TDs, 2 Rec 22 yards .16 TDs, 22 touches 125 yards 1.06 TDs

Payton: 20 att 88 yards .5 TDs, 2 Rec 24 rec .07 TDs, 23 touches 112 yards .6 TDs

Sanders: 20 att 100 yards .7 TDs, 2 rec 19 rec .06 TDs, 22 touches 119 yards .7 TDs

Smith: 20 att 81 yards .7 TDs, 2 rec 14 yards .04 TDs, 22 touches 95 yards .8 TDs

Tomlinson: 21 att 96 yards 1.03 TDs, 4 rec 30 yards .12, 25 touches 126 yards 1.2 TDs

Conclusion

Statistically speaking, Smith is the greatest running back per career, Tomlinson the greatest per season, while per game is a toss up between Brown and Tomlinson. Smith, however, falls short of the rest when looking at game and season averages, although there is something to be said for longevity.

Barry Sanders and Jim Brown each averaged over a 100 yards a game, while Sanders and Tomlinson averaged over 1,500 yards a season. It is also interesting to note how close every back is in terms of touches a game, besides Tomlinson, who touches the ball considerably more. Whether this is a hindrance or a credit to his durability is up to interpretation.

Tomlinson blows the competition away when it comes to scoring touchdowns. He is the only back to average more than one rushing touchdown a game. He also catches about twice as many balls per season and per game.

So who is the greatest back? Jim Brown dominates per game with a 5.2 yard a carry average, Barry Sanders is consistently great, while LaDainian Tomlinson is a workhorse who produces more and turns it over less than any other back.

For those reasons, it is my opinion that when he hangs them up, LaDainian Tomlinson will be the greatest back to ever play. But as of right now, Barry Sanders is the greatest running back of all time.

Verdict: Barry Sanders (now)/LaDainian Tomlinson (future)

With the 218th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft the Detroit Lions selected Army Safety Caleb Campbell and quite possibly the best pick Lions General Manager Matt Millen has ever made, even if he is just a backup safety.

Despite his previous draft day blunders Millen struck gold here, not because of the talented player he selected but the future he gave that pick.

Campbell a cadet in the Army, will now be suiting up for the Detroit Lions instead of suiting up with a gun in his hand in Iraq thanks to Matt Millen and the Army's new rule that allows cadets to try and pursue a career in professional sports instead of serving the two years of required active service.

The rule states that Cadets accepted into the program, "will owe two years of active service in the Army, during which time they will be allowed to play their sport in the player-development systems of their respective organizations and be assigned to recruiting stations. If they remain in professional sports following those two years, they will be provided the option of buying out the remaining three years of their active-duty commitment in exchange for six years of reserve time."Campbell will be required to do some recruiting for the Army in exchange for not being shipped out, mostly in the NFL's offseason.

When his name was finally called on Sunday, fans of all teams chanted "Ca-leb Camp-bell" and "U-S-A" in a truly heart warming moment that will forever be etched in the minds of those who witnessed it.

So thank you Matt Millen. Thank you for giving this kid a chance and a dream. You finally did right.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets: Game One Recap

The Denver Nuggets suffered a scare prior to their game one matchup versus the Los Angeles Lakers. Their bus carrying Marcus Camby, J.R. Smith, and others caught fire.

There were no injuries and they arrived on time, only to be the victims of another fire.

The Lakers shot 50 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point range.

Lakers forward Pau Gasol led the way, shooting 14-20 from the field, and finishing with 36 points. Kobe Bryant, the favorite for the MVP, started slow but got hot in the fourth quarter, where he scored 18 of his 32 points, capping the Lakers 128-114 victory.

Nuggets stars Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony had stellar offensive performances themselves, adding 30 points apiece.

But all this was for naught, as the Lakers were too efficient and they once again got a huge contribution from their bench players. Lamar Odom added 17 points, Luke Walton had 16, and Sasha Vujacic and Vladmir Radmanovich each had eight.

More important than the final box score or the margin of victory, game one set the tone for the rest of the series.

The Lakers stars came up big and their bench held their own. The Nuggets received a stellar performance from their stars, but it fell short. 14 points short.

The Nuggets struggled on defense, as we knew they would. One has to wonder, if their stars each score 30 and they still lose by double digits, what chance do they stand in the rest of the series?

Sure, they could use Allen Iverson not being ejected from the game, but that was with just two minutes to go, after it was all decided.

When Iverson got his second technical foul, it was clear that he, like all Nuggets fans, was frustrated with his team's performance on defense.

Can the Nuggets rally for game two? Do they have enough to close the gap and overcome, or will they continue to flounder on defense and end up sitting on their couches within a week?

If what we learned from game one holds true for the rest of the series, the latter seems most likely.

NBA Commissioner David Stern Is Giddy

Here we are boys and girls, springtime.

That means the baseball season is well underway, the Stanley Cup playoffs are heating up, the NFL Draft is almost here, and what promises to be the most memorable NBA playoffs in quite some time is on our doorstep.

Yes David Stern is one happy man. And why shouldn't he be after the regular season we just saw? This year saw so many story lines the Stephen A. Smith may never stop talking. This year we witnessed the most competitive conference ever out in the West (every playoff team won 50 games), the most hotly debated MVP race in quite some time, and the reemergence of one of the NBA's most storied franchises, the Boston Celtics. Not to mention all of the trades, Gasol to the Lakers, The Diesel to the Desert, Jason Kidd to Dallas, etc. All of this has made for one of the most compelling seasons ever in the NBA, assuring everyone that we are now fully out of the Jordan Era.

I am surprised that David Stern hasn't hired somebody to carry around a handkerchief to wipe away the drool from his mouth. What could make Mr. Stern happier? What on Earth could possibly top that? A Suns-Lakers Western Finals and a Celtics-Pistons Eastern Finals could top it. And you know what, he's going to get it.

Somebody up there must really like David Stern to have the seedings fall where they did. The West is set up for the Lakers (the No. 1 seed) and the Suns (the No. 6 seed) to meet in the finals. What about the Spurs, Hornets, Jazz and everyone else in the West you ask?

Simple, they'll lose.

The Spurs are not what they once were and cannot keep pace with the Suns offense to win the series. From there they will be matched up with the winner of the Hornets-Mavs series. Now the likely winner out of that matchup is the Hornets, but neither team will beat the Suns. The Hornets are too inexperienced to beat the Suns and Dallas simply does not want it as much as Phoenix does. While over in L.A. the Lakers will easily take care of the inconsistent Nuggets and will face either the Rockets or the Jazz. Houston is hot right now, maybe the hottest in the league, but do they have enough to keep it up in the playoffs? I think not. The Jazz dominate at home, but struggle on the road and you have to win on the road to win in the playoffs, which they won't.

Over in the East, it's much simpler. The Celtics face the Hawks, who may as well not show up for the series. Sorry Atlanta, but you are not stopping KG from reaching round two. From there they face the Cavs or the Wizards. The Wizards talk a lot but simply do not have the defense to stop the Celtics, while the Cavs have not fared as well as they would have liked since trading for Ben Wallace and are to dependent on LeBron to beat the Celtics in a seven game series. The Pistons face the Sixers and should easily take care of them. They'll either face Chris Bosh and the Raptors or Dwight Howard and the Magic. Either way Chauncey Billups and the seasoned Pistons come out on top.

Call it destiny, call it divine intervention, call it what ever you'd like but David Stern is going to get his way.

The two best teams in the East will slug it out in an epic duel and Shaq and Kobe reignite the NBA's top rivalry in a seven game series to see who gets a shot at the ring.

The only thing that could make it better is if both the Lakers and the Celtics advance to revitalize the NBA's greatest rivalry in what would be one of the best Finals of all time.

You can go ahead and wipe your mouth off Commissioner.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye, the NFL Schedule Is Out! (Part 1)

Rejoice you diehard and faithful fans. Make your predictions and place your bets. April 15th, an unofficial national holiday. No I'm not talking about tax day, I'm talking about the release of the 2008-2009 NFL Schedule. All round the country every fan believes there team is going 16-0, that this year is their year, optimism is at an all time high. As always certain games have teams and players salivating alike. Those games that justify buying that new 50 inch plasma without telling you wife. Here, week by week, are my must see match-ups of the 08-09 NFL Season, weeks 1-8.

Week 1: Dallas Cowboys @ Cleveland Browns 4:15 FOX

It's T.O. and company's first game since their playoff loss to the eventual NFL Champs, the New York Giants and T.O.'s memorable post-game theatrics. This match-up pits two teams that have Super Bowl aspirations, the NFC favorite Cowboys and everybody's Dark Horse, the Cleveland Browns. Both teams feature potent offenses the Dawg Pound always makes for a great atmosphere, especially with its teams Championship prospects the highest since their return to Cleveland.

Match-Up to Watch: LB DeMarcus Ware vs. LT Joe Thomas

Two Pro Bowlers go head-to-head in a pivotal in game one on one. If Ware can routinely beat Thomas and put pressure on QB Derek Anderson then the Browns offense could sputter and swing the power to the Cowboys. If Thomas holds his own and gives Anderson time, look for the Browns to score and score often.

Week 2: Philadelphia Eagles @ Dallas Cowboys 8:30 ESPN

Now you may be thinking that I am a Cowboys fan for choosing them twice in a row. I assure you I am not. I will vehemently deny any such accusation. However it is hard to ignore this NFC match-up. The Cowboys-Eagles rivalry always makes for a good game. This game provides the chance for each team to make a statement and send a message to the rest of the league that they will be a force to be reckoned with not only in the NFC East, but in the entire NFL.

Match-Up to Watch: CB Asante Samuels vs. Terrell Owens

A great CB vs. a Great WR. The Eagles signed Samuels for the very reason of shutting down the top WRs in the NFC East and here will be their first opportunity to see if their investment was a wise decision.

Week 3: Jacksonville Jaguars @ Indianapolis Colts 4:15 CBS

Last year the Jaguars closed the gap between the Colts and their perennial AFC South dominance. This will be the Jags first chance to see if they can finally overtake the Colts in the AFC South. meanwhile the Colts will be looking to reassure everyone that they are still the team to beat, not only in the AFC South, but in the AFC.

Match-Up to Watch: QB Peyton Manning vs. QB David Garrard

2 savvy quarterbacks will try and lead their teams to a win and control of the AFC South. Both QBs are strong leaders and run their offense very efficiently. Look for the winner of this match-up to be the on the winning team.

Week 4: Houston Texans @ Jacksonville Jaguars 1:00 CBS

AFC South games are always physical, entertaining games. The young Texans defense will try and contain the electric Maurice Jones-Drew in what may turn out to be a pivotal AFC South match-up. The Texans have playoff hopes and the Jags are thinking Super Bowl.

Match-Up to Watch: Texans D-Line vs. Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor

If the young Texans D-line can shut down the Jags run game they could pull off the upset. If Fred Taylor and MJD have their way, it could be a long day for the Texans.

Week 5: Seattle Seahawks @ New York Giants 1:00 FOX

Ah, my first mention of the Defending Champs. A possible playoff preview in the Meadowlands featuring two of the best NFC Quarterbacks. This game may have possible seeding ramifications and looks to be a close, entertaining game.

Match-Up to Watch: QB Eli Manning vs. Seattle Defense

Seattle has one of the best Front 7's in the league and if they put pressure on Eli they could very well go into New York and win. If Eli continues to grow as a QB and has a good game vs a tough defense it could go a long way to New York's quest for another ring.

Week 6: New England Patriots @ San Diego Chargers 8:15 NBC

A rematch of last years AFC Championship game. IT will be New England's first game at San Diego since the heated 2006 AFC Divisional game that ignited the rivalry. The San Diego fans have been waiting for this game for two years and will be going absolutely crazy. The game itself features two of the, if not the, best teams in the NFL in what will most likely be a playoff preview and could ultimately determine who gets the top seed and home field advantage in the playoffs.

Match-Up to Watch: WR Randy Moss vs. CB Antonio Cromartie

2 of the most athletic players in the league go head-to-head in one of the biggest AFC regular season games of the year. Both players had the best individual seasons at their respective positions last year and look to continue that succcess in the 2008 season. Both players are athletic freaks who are top players at their positions. The winner of this match-up will contribute largely to the outcome of this game.

Week 7: Indianapolis Colts @ Green Bay Packers 4:15 CBS

The Aaron Rodgers experiment will be in full swing this far into the season. He will be looking to start building his legacy in a what could very well be a statement game for the Packers. A win would solidify that the Packers are fully capable of competing with the best without Brett Favre and would be a huge confidence boost for Rodgers. However he will be going against Peyton Manning and company, a team who is a lock for the playoffs every year and are hungry for another ring.

Match-Up to Watch: Aaron Rodgers vs. Colts Defense

The young Rodgers could go a long way in convincing people that he is the right man to replace Brett Favre with a good game vs. the Colts. However Bob Sanders and company give any QB trouble and look to wreak havoc vs. the inexperienced Rodgers.

Week 8: New York Giants @ Pittsburgh Steelers 4:15 FOX

Big Ben and the Steelers are looking to prove that they are contenders. The Giants are looking to prove to everyone that another Super Bowl win is not out of the realm of possibility with a win over one of the AFC's better teams. The game looks to be one of the most physical of the year and an all around entertaining game.

Match-Up to Watch: Giants D-Line vs. Steelers O-line

In the Super Bowl the Giants D-line put pressure on Tom Brady throughout the game, leading to the Giants win. With the loss of G Alan Faneca early this offseason the Steelers need to answer the question as to whether they have the ability to protect Roethlisberger vs. one of the league's best pass rushes.

No Matter How It Ends, Browns Season a Success

The Cleveland Browns may make the playoffs; they may not.

Unfortunately, Romeo Crennel's team forfeited a chance to decide its own fate by losing to the downtrodden Bengals.

Instead, the Browns' hopes hinge on the outcome of Sunday night's Colts-Titans game.

But no matter how their season concludes, the Browns can look back on 2007 as a building point—the beginning of something new, something good.

At the start of the year, most observers, including myself, thought the Browns would finish last in their division and compete for a Top Five draft pick. Crennel was on the hot seat, and the front office seemed like chickens with their heads cut off after trading starting quarterback Charlie Frye.

But the Browns, led by third-stringer turned savior Derek Anderson, shocked the NFL by posting a 7-4 through the end of November.

Suddenly, the Browns, of all teams, looked playoff-bound.

After going 2-2 in December, though, the Browns are now clinging to the No. 6 seed, with the Titans able to write their own playoff ticket.

In any event, the Browns found their QB of the future this year—whether it be Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn. Jamal Lewis gave the team its first real RB threat since its expansion rebirth. New offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski has revitalized his unit, as the Browns are in the top half of the league in most offensive categories.

The only bad news is that the same success wasn't duplicated on the defensive side of the ball, as the Browns placed in the bottom half of the league in most defensive categories.

The Browns' season will likely come to an end Sunday, as the Colts look set to rest Peyton Manning and other key starters. Still, 2007 should give Browns fans reason to hope for the future—something they haven't had in a long time.

That alone makes the year a success.

By the Numbers: How Good Is LaDainian Tomlinson?

Yes, you're probably tired of hearing how "classy" LaDainian Tomlinson is—the same way you're tired of ESPN's ongoing lovefest with the Patriots.

But I find it necessary to state the case for LT as one of the greatest running backs of all time—and perhaps one of the greatest by the time he hangs them up.

As I see it, Tomlinson already ranks with Walter Payton, Jim Brown, Emmit Smith, and Barry Sanders. Some will call that blasphemy, given that LT only has seven years of NFL experience to his name—but consider the man's body of work...

LaDainian Tomlinson's Accomplishments

Touchdowns

Most TDs in a Season (31)
Most Rushing TDs in a season (28)
Most Points in a Season (186)
Most Rushing TDs in Chargers' History
Most TDs in Chargers History
Led League in Rushing TDs '04, '06, '07
Leads All Active Players in Rushing TDs (115)
Ranks third on Rushing TDs list (115)
Second among active players in TDs (128)
Seventh all-time on career TD list (128)
Seven straight years of 10 or more rushing TDs ('01-'07)
Six straight years of 15 or more TDs ('02-'07)
Second among active players in total points scored (768)

Rushing Yards

NFL rushing crown in '06, '07
Three seasons of 1m500+ rushing yards
Seven straight seasons with 1,200 or more rushing yards
Third among active players in rushing yards (10,594)
19th on all-time rushing yards list (10594)
Led league in rushing yards/game in '06 (113.4)
Leads all active players in rush yards/game (96.3)
Fourth all-time in rush yards/game (96.3)

Rushing Attempts

Ranks third among active players (2,349)
Ranks 21st all-time (2,349)
Finished sixth or higher in all seven seasons
Career average of 4.5 yds/attempt
Seven straight seasons with 300 or more carries

Receiving

Only player with 100 catches and 1,000 yards rushing in a season
Ranks 27th among active players (457 rec)
Ranks 127th on all-time receptions list (457 rec)

Yards From Scrimmage

Three seasons with 2000 yards or more ('02, '03, '06)
Ranks fifth among active players (13,926)
Ranks 22nd all-time (13,926)
With 74 yards vs Raiders sunday, will be averaging 2000 yds/season

Yards From Scrimmage

Highest scrimmage yards/game average of any player in NFL history (126.93)

Touches

Led league in touches '01, '02
Third among active players in touches (2,806)
20th all-time in touches (2,806)
Never finished lower than third in touches in his career
Seven straight seasons of 350 touches or more

Miscellaneous

Named to Pro Bowl five times (2002, 2004-07)
All Pro Selection 2002-2006 (2007 announcement pending)
2006-2007 Most Valuable Player
2006-2007 co-Walter Payton Award Winner with Drew Brees
Joined Eric Dickerson as only players to start career with 1,200 rushing yards
Never missed a game due to injury
Through six seasons, had more carries, rushing yards, rushing TDs, receiving TDs, total TDs, receiving yards, and total yards than Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, and Emmitt Smith through their first six years

Average Season (through six seasons)

342 carries for 1,529 yards; 4.5 avg; 17 rushing TDs
65 rec for 483 yards; 7.3 avg; two rec. But there's one fact you can't argue with:

We're watching one of the greats, and we'd better enjoy it.
