The Next Great Offense of College Football

Hey you remember that old play that the teams of the 80's used to run? You know that play where the quarterback would turn like he's going to give the ball to the fullback and then sprint down the line with it, and then he would either keep it or pitch it to the running back?

Remember that old thing? Gosh what was it called? Oh yeah, the triple option.

Gosh that was such a great offense during its time. Too bad it doesn't work anymore. I mean come on, no one can run that today. They would just get crushed, right?

That offense is a dinosaur and would be torn apart by the West Coast or the Spread. Oh but wait, doesn't the No. 7 team in the country run that. No it can't be. hey're just in a weak conference right?

OK, seriously though, the triple option will make its return very soon and in this article I'm going to give you some reasons why.

The first reason is just a practical example: look at Georgia Tech and Navy. Now I know Navy isn't in major college football, but look at how good the Midshipmen are.

They almost beat Ohio State and what is impressive about Navy being even average is that Navy can't recruit. To get into Annapolis you have to have a recommendation from a senator, so Navy just has to work with what they have.

As far as Georgia Tech goes, well, if it could have beat Miami it would have a shot at a National Title.

For other reasons lets look at the offenses ran today by major college teams. The new trend is the spread. Florida probably runs it the best, but so does West Virginia, Arkansas, Texas Tech, Houston, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas.

I could go on and on but I think you get the point. Anyway, defenses today are gearing up to defend the spread which requires speed rather than size. With exceptions, defenses today are very fast but not big.

You beat speed by running the ball right at it. This is the reason Georgia Tech is so successful all of the sudden. It pounds the football and because not many defenses are geared up to defend the triple option. Defensive coordinators have to change their whole game plan when they play teams like Georgia Tech and Navy.

Also, the triple option is a ball control offense. Your team might score 50 points a game but if that offense is never on the field then it can't score.

Look at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders have a championship caliber offense but when they play teams that keep the ball and that offense of the field, they lose. Another example was the Oregon—Boise State game. Oregon was beaten because its offense was never on the field.

When run effectively, with the right athletes, the triple option can beat anybody today. I firmly believe that Georgia Tech could beat Texas, or Alabama, and give Florida one hell of a football game.

So just wait and you will see the return of the triple option start to spread across major college football I think within the next five years.

Cornhusker's Upcoming Contest Against Kansas State Reminds of Better Times

Don't you miss those good old days? You know, the ones where Nebraska football was revered nation wide, the ones where teams would play us and feel it for the next month, or how about the days where teams were afraid to play us because they new we would beat the snot out of them.

You know, those days where 250 rushing yards in game was below average and you knew that if we threw the ball as many or more times than we ran we probably lost.

Oh, how far Nebraska has fallen.

I suppose I need to explain my reminiscing. Today I saw a Sports Illustrated collectors edition. The title was Champions Again and it had Tommy Frazier standing on the very field where Nebraska hung 63 points on the Gators to win the 1995 national title. In this edition I read an article about the game against K-State that year.

In the article it talked about how that year Kansas State was 6-0 and No. 8 in the country under Bill Snyder's first years there. It had qoutes from players that year saying how they were a different team and how they thought they had a shot at Nebraksa that year.

However, it wasn't enough. The Huskers humiliated the Wildcats 49-25. The article said that maybe one day the 'Cats would have enough to beat Nebraska, maybe one day their mentality would be enough to over come Nebraska. It was totally unforeseen then the heights Kansas State would rise to and the depths to which the Huskers would fall.

Yes, we are on the road back and yes, Bo will be the one to take us to the top of the mountain again, but Nebraska never had to leave the top. Nebraska had nothing but success for 50 years and it would have continued for another 50 if it were not for ridiculous expectations and impatient people.

We the fans ended Nebraska's run of dominance. It wasn't because of the limited scholarships or the eventual parity throughout college football, it was the fans and boosters who couldn't be happy with 10 wins a year, the ones who thought every year should be a championship one.

This isn't baseball and we aren't the Yankees.

Now, next week's game against Kansas State, is for the North title. For Nebraska and Kansas State it's this simple: win and you're in, lose and you come in second. Kansas, Colorado, and Iowa State are all out of it.

Someone could draw comparisons to that 95 game. It's Snyder's first year back with K-State, they have a new winning mentality, and the game is at Memorial Stadium where Nebraska will surely be favored.

However, one could see the irony in that as well. Nebraska is just a shadow of its former self. Today if I were to tell you Nebraska rushed for 250 yards in a game you would assume they won, but if I told you that in 95, you would have laughed at me or assumed Nebraska lost. It is just ridculous to look at the Huskers right now and see them as being back or even close to it.

I'm sorry, but there has to be someone out there that keeps Husker fans down to earth and if it has to be me then so be it; Nebraska is not back. Bo will get them there if he is given enough time, but let's face it, he won't becuase eventually expectations will get ridiculously high again. People will again start to think we are the Yankees and start acting accordingly.

I do hope Nebraska returns to prominence; what I want everyone to understand is why Nebraska fell. They fell becuase of the people who couldn't be happy with winning, they fell because of a Chancellor and boosters that so quickly lost sight of what mattered—winning, not championships. I do hope Bo will be given enough time.

This Week's Predictions

Nebraska vs. Missouri:

Bo has tried to downplay the revenge factor in this game, but the fact is Nebraska is looking to atone for the beatdown Missouri put on them in Lincoln last year. This game will be close as both of these teams are very good.

Especially impressive is Missouri, having lost more talent than anyone in the nation, and yet being as good as they have been this year. However I think Nebraska is back and they take this one.

Final score: Nebraska 24, Missouri: 14

LSU vs. Florida:

This is a big one in the SEC. LSU has been better than expected this year and they have a shot in this one, espcially if Tebow can't go. However Jesse Palmer said it best on ESPN that without Tebow this goes from being last year's national title offense to the National title offense Florida had with Chris Leak at quarterback.

LSU just doesn't have enough in the tank to hang with Florida, but they keep it close.

Final score: Florida 35, LSU 24

Alabama vs. Ole Miss:

Don't overlook this game. Ole Miss is a very good team that just had a bad day against a good South Carolina team. I don't really understand why they dropped so far. This should be a great game to watch, and I think Ole Miss pulls off the upset.

Final score: Ole Miss: 24, Bama: 21

Michigan vs. Iowa:

At 5-0 Iowa is another surprise this year and they have a possibility of winning the Big 10 if they can get by Penn State and Ohio State. Michigan isn't out of it either, but a loss Saturday would all but end Michigan's Rose Bowl hopes, and for Iowa already at number 12 dare I say National Title? (Prolly not)

Final score: Iowa: 24, Michigan: 17

Oklahoma vs. Baylor:

I was pretty upset when OU lost to Miami. Not because I'm and Oklahoma fan, but because I absolutely hate Miami.

Aside from that Oklahoma is in danger of dropping out of the top 25 if they lose to Baylor, and don't overlook the Bears. Even without Robert Griffin they are putting up points.

It's a must win for OU to even keep BCS hopes alive.

Final score: Oklahoma: 31, Baylor 17

Texas vs. Colorado:

Well so much for winning 10 games this year. I think Coach Hawkins better start searching for another job because Colorado may not even make a bowl this year.

Texas wins in a rout.

Final score: Texas: 41, Colorado: 7

This Week's Predictions

Nebraska vs. Virginia Tech

This should be a close game much like last year's. The game will hinge on the ability of Nebraska's defense to slow down Tyrod Taylor, and on Virginia Tech's rushing attack. If Nebraska can force Taylor to beat them through the air then they should win, but it'll be close.

Nebraska: 24 Virginia Tech: 17

Georgia Tech vs. Miami

I was excited when Paul Johnson was brought to Georgia Tech because it gave the triple option another shot in major college football. This type of running game, while used at Navy, hasn't been seen in big time college ball since the end of Nebraska's dynasty in 2003.

I think this will be another close one but the running game of Georgia Tech will eventually wear down the Hurricane's defense and give the game to Georgia Tech, who in my opinion could run the table this season in the ACC.

Georgia Tech: 28 Miami: 20

Tennesee vs. Florida

This game won't be close. Not because Tennesee are that bad, but because Lane Kiffin has upset the best team in the country with his trash talking. Florida's defense will smother the Vols offense and Tebow and company will tear apart the Tennessee defense.

Florida: 41 Tennesee: 14

Florida State vs. BYU

Every year we say that we need a playoff to give the smaller conference teams a shot at the title. Well this could be the year that one of those teams sneaks into the BCS title game, and that team could be BYU. No they're not in a big time conference but they are already at number seven, there are two other ranked teams in the mountain west in Utah and TCU, and they beat Oklahoma.

I mean, come on let's face it, if BYU can run the table this year their resume is going to be pretty impresive. As far as the game goes I say Florida State, after that heartbreaker at Miami, will lose. I believe this is BYU's year and possibly the year that a smaller confrence team get their shot.

BYU: 21 Florida State: 14

Texas vs. Texas Tech

They're expecting the largest crowd in Texas school history for this one. Can Leach replace Harell and Crabtree? On Saturday we'll find out. I think Tech will be effective on offense and I never count out Mike Leach. That being said, you can't just replace talent like Crabtree and Harell. Tech keep it close but they won't have enough in the tank to cause upset number two.

Texas: 35 Texas Tech: 21

California vs. Minnesota

Many think that this could be the year Cal overthrows USC and wins the Pac 10 and at number eight, possibly a national title. However Minnesota are no pushovers, as they started last season undefeated, before falling on hard times midseason. Cal have a history of overlooking smaller opponents. This one will be closer than the experts think but Cal survive a scare.

California: 35 Minnisota: 27

Boise State vs. Fresno State

Boise State are most likely to be undefeated this year, and they are another team that deserves that shot in the title game. That being said they are in too small a conference and don't play enough big time teams to get there. Fresno are the toughest opponent they have left on the schedule. This game will be close but Boisie will win.

Boise: 21 Fresno State: 17

New Husker Football Poster Is a Testament to Nebraksa Tradition

I got a copy of the 2009 husker schedule poster today, and it was awsome.

The poster shows the progression of coaches from the last 50 years. On the left is Devaney, to his right is Osborne, to Osborne's right is Solich, and to Solich's right is BO.

Now, it's an awsome picture, but I just can't shake the feeling that something is missing from it. It's kind of like someone was left out, but I just can't remember who.

Oh yeah I know, Nebraska left out the guy that was supposed to be the savior of our program. Where's Bill Callahan?

I mean, come on, they can't put Solich up there with Devaney and Osborne. He was a horrible coach, or at least that's what fans told themselves. And when people tried to defend Solich, the excuses given were that he couldn't cut it and the game had passed him by.

So where's Callahan?

Wasn't he supposed to be the savior? Wasn't he the guy that was supposed to raise Nebraska out of the ashes? That's why he was hired right?

And yet, here we are six years later, and we can't even put him on our posters?

I don't want to say Husker fans are fickle, but when Nebraska hired Callahan, everyone felt fine with throwing Solich under the bus to promote him. Now, we have no problem putting Solich up there right next to the icons of our beloved football program.

Maybe the next time Nebraska moves toward another coaching change, and I hope that won't be for a long time, the program will think about what it is doing, and hopefully it will do it for the right reasons and not just to get rid of someone it doesn't like.

Can the Huskers Contend for a National Title?

I acknowledge that a national title is steep expectations for Bo Pelini's second year, but lets look at the facts:

On the defensive front, Nebraska has four players with significant experience returning, highlighted by Ndamukong Suh. Suh, a potential first-round draft pick, passed up instant millionaire money to return to Nebraska for his senior year.

Joining Suh on the inside will be Baker Steinkuhler, who has significant experience. At defensive end will be returning starter Pierre Allan. Also, returning from a broken leg at the start of last year, will be Barry Turner.

The Huskers won't be too deep on the defensive front but they will have significant experience. At linebacker, Phillip Dillard is returning in the middle, but right now he is behind some younger players. It adds up to the fact that you may see three new faces at linebacker this year for the Huskers. The secondary should be much improved with everyone returning, highlighted by safety Larry Asante.

Offensively, the Huskers have three lineman returning, including center Jacob Hickman. With the lightning-and-thunder duo of Helu and Castillo returning at running back the running game should be the centerpiece of the Husker offense.

The question marks offensively lie at quarterback. Zac Lee emerged from spring ball with the keys to the offense, but he is inexperienced, notching only three games of playing time and completing just one pass. The backup LaTravis Washington is even more inexperienced, having moved from linebacker to quarterback just this spring.

Wide receiver is also a question mark, with the top-two receivers Nate Swift and Todd Peterson leaving last year. Menelik Holt and Niles Paul show promise, but no one else on the squad has any experience.

Schedule-wise, this is how it looks: Nebraska has two tune-up games before they travel to Blacksburg. If we can escape Blacksburg with a win, I believe we will be 8-0 when Oklahoma comes to town; with the rivalry, all bets are off. If we can find some way to beat Oklahoma, then we very well might be undefeated at season's end.

Now there are several trap games to worry about between Virginia Tech and Oklahoma: The first is the conference opener at Missouri. The tigers have lost more talent than anyone but they will still be respectable. Next is a home game against Texas Tech. That one should be a win, with Tech losing Harell and Crabtree, but you can never count out Mike Leach.

Then there's a game at Baylor. The Bears are on the rise and may very well make a Bowl game this year. After Oklahoma, there are also games at Kansas and at Colorado to worry about.

The Huskers should be able to go undefeated against all North opponents. If we win the games we're supposed to and maybe pull an upset or two, we could be right in the hunt for not just a Big 12, but also a National Title.

Ed Thomas: A Great Coach And A Great Man

When I heard that Ed Thomas was killed, I was stunned. I asked myself why would anyone want to kill that man? It was terrible.

I actually played for his brother Greg Thomas at Humboldt Iowa. Ed was at all of our camps and I always learned a lot from him.

It was my junior year in high school when I transferred to Humboldt and attended the annual football camp. Ed Thomas was there. He helped out and I learned a lot from him.

When I came to Humboldt, I had lost my faith in football the school I came from had a coach that was old and out of touch with his players. He had made football miserable for me. When I came to Humboldt I decided to give it one more shot.

The first day of camp, Ed Thomas gave a speech telling us how much we will miss football once it's gone. He told us how different it would be once our four years were up and we were on the other side of the fence.

He helped me rediscover how much I loved football and showed me all the things I would (and do) miss, now because I don't play anymore.

He was one of the influences that led me to want to be a football coach. He is someone who will never be on the other side of the fence. He built a dynasty at Applington Parkersburg and he did it the right way: with respect and integrity.

He is and always will be a very important person in my life.

Nebraska Needs To Get Rid of Mike Anderson

I don't know exactly how long Mike Anderson has been at Nebraska, but I do know it has been at least five years, and each one of those seasons has been a successful one.

During his years as Nebraska's baseball coach, he has made the College World Series Regionals almost every year as well as the Big 12 tournament. That is until this year.

This year, the Cornhusker didn't even win 30 games. For the last five years, Anderson has used Van Horne's boys, and now, we are witnessing the fact that his recruits can't even win 30 games.

Can you seriously say that we lost that much talent between this year and last year? Did we really lose enough talent to go from almost 50 wins to not even 30?

This is inexcusable. I think it's time to hold Husker baseball accountable. I think it's time to start expecting success out of baseball.

We didn't even make the postseason this year. This would be inexcusable if it happened in any other "big time" sport, and the coach would be fired.

Now, I'm not usually the guy to call for a coach's job, but the last game I saw was a loss to California State-Bakersfield! That was the final straw for me.

My Pre-Season Big 12 Standings

North:

1) Nebraska: Nebraska returns to the top of the North this year.

2) Colorado: With Nebraska having to come to Boulder this year the Buffs could very well take first in the division however I don't see it. That being said Nebraska and Colorado are the cream of the crop in the North this year.

3) Kansas: The days of Kansas being the doormat in the Big 12 are over.

4) Kansas State: Bill Snyder has returned much reminiscent of Osborne's return to Nebraska. But can he raise K-State from the ashes?

5) Missouri: With Chase Daniels and Jeremy Maclin gone Missouri is utterly without talent and it will show this year.

6) Iowa State: Their Iowa State that's pretty much all you need to say.

South:

1) Texas: Texas will be playing with a chip on their shoulder this year. Last year they should have been in the Big 12 and national title games and they know it. With McCoy and company returning they should win the South.

2) Oklahoma: Bradford is coming back. That's pretty much all Oklahoma needs. The Red River Shootout should decide the South. Unless we have another travesty like last year.

3) Oklahoma State: The Cowboys are talented but not enough to stand up to Texas and Oklahoma.

4) Texas Tech: With Graham Harell, and Micheal Crabtree gone Leach will have to find another quarterback (Not that that will be hard). Tech will put up the same numbers offensively but with less wins.

5) Texas A&M: They were bad last year and have shown no signs that they will get any better.

6) Baylor: Don't sleep on the Bears their gettin there but they're still a few years away.

Title Game: Texas vs. Nebraska

Big 12 Champions: Texas

Nebraska's almost back on track but they just don't have enough in the tank to hang with Texas.

What are They Doing in Denver!?

What is up in Denver?

I was against the firing of Mike Shannahan, but I understood it. He had few playoff wins and no Super Bowl appearences since the departure of Elway. I was, myself, getting to the point at which I was going to call for his job, although I thought he should have been given at least one more year, but as I said I can understand why he was fired even if I don't agree with it.

I was even somewhat behind the hiring of Josh McDaniels. I thought, coming from the Patriots, he was a fairly good pick. But then he came in and completely tore apart the team.

I was so pumped for this season—I thought Denver really had a chance to compete for a title, especially with the arrivals of Lamont Jordan, Corell Buckhalter, and Brian Dawkins.

But McDaniels immediately came in and tried to trade Cutler, who was, in my opinion, the franchise player on the team. He is also arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Yes, Cutler was kind of a baby after the attempted trade for Cassell fell through, and he refused to try and make it work in Denver, but he never should have been put in that situation. What other head coach would ever dream of coming onto a team and immediately trying to trade a starting quarterback the caliber of Jay Cutler?

The Broncos were lucky they were able to get Orton. And now Brandon Marshall wants to be traded, so now the starting quarterback and best wide receiver on the team in 2008 will likely not be with them in 2009.

Let's try this again. I'm pretty embarassed at the las top ten I put out so hopefully we can do better here. There are a lot of plays in Husker history, there are still some plays left out becuase I couldn't find fumble rooskie pictures and I'm sure I missed a few other plays. So please tell me what you think.
Begin Slideshow

The 10 Best Nebraska Cornhuskers Plays of All Time

Many people argue about what the best plays in Husker history are. Well in this slide show we will hopefully shed some light on that question. Here are a few plays and some moments that I believe make the to 10.

The top 10 Husker plays of all time starting at number 10 with Nadomokong (I doubt I spelled that right) Suh's interception return for a touchdown in Nebraska's win over Colorado last year at home.
Begin Slideshow

Nebraska Cornhuskers Hit the Field for Spring Practice

The Huskers began spring training this year with the goal of continuing to rebuild a program that was needlessly destroyed by selfish decisions from people who thought failure was 10 wins a year.

But that time is now over and Bo Pelini still has a long way to go. Offensively, the position battle to watch this spring is the quarterback position. With the departure of Partric Witt, the race is wide open.

Zac Lee is the heavy favorite, having already spent time in Shawn Watson's system. Right behind him is redshirt freshman Cody Spano. The race appears to be between these two, but the dark horse could be Latravis Washington, the linebacker who was moved to quarterback earlier in the spring.

Freshman Cody Green was the only quarterback recruited this year. He has already been tabbed as the quarterback of the future for the Huskers; however, he was recently injured and missed the last week of practice. During his senior year at Dayton High School, he led his team to a 13-2 record as the state runner-ups.

During the season, Green amassed 5,000 yards of total offense and 62 total touchdowns, including 37 through the air on 3,625 passing yards and 25 on 1,610 rushing yards—a true dual threat quarterback.

Whoever the starter is, they will have great protection as the entire starting line for the Cornhuskers will be all juniors and seniors. The likely rotation at running back next year will be starter Roy Helu rotating with Quentin Castille and Marcus Mendoza.

Receivers will be a position of veterans for the Huskers, with returning starters Niles Paul, Curenski Gilleyen, Menelik Holt, and tight end Mike McNeill.

Defensively, the position battles of key importance will be the front seven. With Suh coming back for his senior year at defensive tackle, he will likely be joined by Baker Steinkuhler inside, with Barry Turner and Pierre Allen at defensive end all returning as starters.

Barry Turner broke his leg the first part of last year and missed most of the season. Colton Koehler, Phillip Dillard, and Blake Lawrence will be the likely starters at linebacker. Nebraska is much deeper this year than they were last year in the front seven, so look for several other names to see a good deal of playing time this next year as well.

The most questionable part of the defense last year was the secondary. Look for that to be much improved this year, but don't be surprised if you see lingering parts of the Cosgrove effect for one more year. He was such a horrible coordinator that it takes awhile to get his teaching out of the players.

Returning starters to watch are Alfonzo Dennard, Prince Amukamara, Eric Hagg, Anthony Blue, and senior Larry Asante, who has the opportunity, in my opinon, to be one of the best safeties in the country next year. The Husker spring game is April 18 at 1pm.

How Much Worse Can the Big 12 Officals Get?

Will somebody please tell me if they also see that the Big 12 officials are terrible? Nebraska was robbed tonight against A&M. Yes, they were up by 18, and yes, they should have had enough to put it away, but anyone who saw the game knows that at the end Steve Harley wasn't out of bounds.

And it wasn't just the call at the end. There were several calls during the course of the A&M comeback that didn't go Nebraska's way.

I have never said this before, but Nebraska was screwed. They have been all year long. It seems like when it gets down to crunch time, and the game is on the line, the officials always go against Nebraska. I don't know if it is widespread across the Big 12 or if it's just Nebraska that has been getting screwed all year, but I've been to a lot of home games for the Huskers this year, and the officials never give them the call. It's ridiculous, especially at home. Something has to be done about this.

Nebraska-Texas: Huskers Knock Off No. 16 Longhorns 58-55

Ade Dagunduro had 17 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds as the Huskers finally managed to finish a game Saturday at the Devaney Center.

Trailing by 12 early in the second half, it didn't look good for Nebraska. But they didn't fold like Nebraska teams of old. Instead, they chipped away and cut the lead to four.

But another spurt by Texas put the lead back to double digits. Again they didn't fold. Five straight Nebraska free throws cut the lead in half. Then sophomore Toney McCray made a layup, and sophomore Cookie Miller hit a three-pointer to give NU their first lead since late in the first half.

Texas made another run to put themselves up 48-50. Then Sek Henry hit his only field goal of the game, a three-pointer as the shot clock expired, to give Nebraska back the lead. Moments later Dagunduro also hit a three as the shot clock expired to give Nebraska some breathing room.

But Texas still wasn't done, as A.J. Abrams turned around and hit a three to pull Texas within one with under a minute left. Nebraska would only hit one of two free throws, but Texas would miss a three at the other end to take the lead.

Henry was sent to the line with a two-point lead and a chance to put the game away with six seconds left. He hit only one of two. Texas took the ball down the court and got a clean shot off to tie but missed it, and Nebraska pulled off the upset.

With the win Nebraska improved to 15-7 on the year and 5-4 in the Big 12, enough to put them alone in fourth place. Nebraska takes the court next Saturday at Missouri—a must win for the Huskers to stay on the bubble for the NCAA tournament.

The Mighty Mites? Nebraska Basketball Still Has a Chance to Make NCAA Tourney

Well, I've been away for a while. But I'm back now, and there is plenty of Nebraska sports to write about—specifically the Nebraska men's basketball team. I mean, come on; they're quick and fast and fun to watch, but bless their hearts, they just can't grow another few inches.

It's been very painful to watch the last stretch of Big 12 games for the Big Red (or shall I say little red). They've been in every game right up to the end, taking teams like Oklahoma and Kansas right down to the wire, but in the end they've come up just short (no pun intended). These mighty mites, these Nebraska "Hoosiers," have done all they needed to do and more to win these games, but they just can't get over the hump.

I'm sure Doc Sadler has looked at his bench at 6'11" Brian Diaz more than once and just pounded his head on the scorer's table, knowing that next year he will be ready. But this is this year, and after finally holding on in Lubbock, a game that looked like it would be blown again, the Huskers are in a position to place themselves on the bubble for the NCAA tournament.

Now the next two games are critical for Nebraska. They have a game Wednesday in Boulder that is a must win, and one they should win (knock on wood), and then they get Texas at home.

If they can escape Boulder with a win and find some way to pull off a monster upset against Texas in the Devaney Center, then look out. At 15-7 the Huskers would have just one more tough road test at Kansas, and maybe at Missouri; other than that they have a very good shot at winning all the rest of their games after Texas.

This could still be a banner year for Nebraska basketball if they could just find a way to finish ball games.

This year's most memorable sports moments

It's been a great year in sports here is a look back at some of the more memorable moments in sports this year. Moments like David Tyree's catch in the Superbowl to the Boston Celtics winning the NBA title. Also the return of Tom Osborne and Bo Pelini to Nebraska and the rise of Alabama and the cinderella run of Fresno State baseball. I by far didn't get everything in here but I did get the most memorable of the sports moments over the last year. I hope you enjoy them.
Begin Slideshow

Texas Gets Robbed By BCS Polls

Texas just got screwed by the BCS and the human polls that put Oklahoma ahead of them. Texas beat Oklahoma. I'll say it again, Texas beat Oklahoma! Not only that, they beat both teams playing for the Big 12 title.

Now, I know that some of you will say with that logic Texas Tech should still be No. 2 because they beat Texas. But, that isn't the logic that I am using. Let's look at the body of work between Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma.

Let's start with the Red River Shootout. Texas won in a great football game. Since then, Texas lost to Texas Tech also in a great football game. After that, Tech turned around and got clobbered by Oklahoma. Keep in mind that under Stoops, the Sooners have only lost twice in Norman. Norman is always a tough place to play and Tech just wasn't ready. Had the game been in Lubbock, it would have been a different story.

Since they played each other, Oklahoma and Texas have been playing the exact same caliber of football. It's a dead heat to say who is better. Texas Tech hasn't been playing good football. They got destroyed by Oklahoma and barely beat Baylor. Therefore, it is between Oklahoma and Texas to see who is better and since they played each other, they are dead even.

Therefore, you have to take Texas because they beat Oklahoma on a "neutral field" in the Cotton Bowl. If it had been Oklahoma that had beaten Texas, then I would be saying that Oklahoma should go. It will also be a travesty if Texas is left out of the National Title game in favor of Oklahoma, because it's a team that they beat!

Texas has done nothing wrong and yet they are being left out for a team that they BEAT! It's a travesty.

College Football: This Week's Predictions

Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma

This could be the scene in Stillwater Saturday. Oklahoma State could very well beat Oklahoma. In doing so, Oklahoma will be eliminated from national title contention. Sooner or later, Oklahoma will choke. I prefer them to do it before they play for a national title. Final Score: Oklahoma State 31, Oklahoma 28.

Notre Dame vs. USC

This one may be closer than the experts think. Yes, it's in the Coliseum, but USC historically loses to teams they should beat. If the Irish can run the football and control the clock, this will be a good game. But if Jimmy Clausen has the game put on his shoulders, then it will be a long day for the Irish. Final Score: USC 34, Notre Dame 17.

Nebraska vs. Colorado

A bowl game is on the line for Colorado sitting at 5-6 exactly where they were last year when they came into this game. The big difference it Nebraska is 7-4 and on a hot streak winning four of five. The biggest difference of all is the game is in Lincoln and not in Boulder. Final Score: Nebraska 51, Colorado 28.

Texas vs. Texas A&M

A&M has won the last 2 in this series but there is no way they make it 3 in a row. Texas is playing for not just a big 12 title but a national title. They win easily. Final Score: Texas 41, Texas A&M 14.

Florida vs. Florida State

If Florida State wins this one, we could possibly have an All-Big 12 national title game if Florida goes on to beat Bama in the SEC title game. This game is close and being in Tallahassee could give Florida State the edge, especially if Florida is looking ahead to Alabama. Final Score: Florida 31, Florida State 17.

Oregon vs. Oregon State

If Oregon State wins the Civil War, they go to the Rose Bowl; lose and the dream is shattered. This should be a heck of a game. But Oregon State's motivation gives them the edge. Final Score: Oregon State 31, Oregon 24.

Alabama vs. Auburn

Trap game for Alabama. Auburn is having a terrible year and all roads lead to Florida and the SEC title for Bama. This is still the SEC, and even the bottom teams are good. If Bama gets caught looking ahead, they could lose everything. Final Score: Alabama 38, Auburn 28.

Georgia Tech vs. Georgia

Nebraska fans, guess what? The triple option actually works in major college football! After pasting Miami last week, Georgia Tech needs a win against Georgia and a Miami loss to play for the ACC title and possibly an Orange Bowl berth. In one year, Paul Johnson has turned Georgia Tech around. Final Score: Georgia Tech 31, Georgia 21.

Oklahoma-Texas Tech: Is Oklahoma Really That Good?

Well, my prediction for this one was mostly right.

I predicted a blowout, I just figured it would be Texas Tech that would embarrass Oklahoma. It was a great night for the Sooners, but I still don't see how this Oklahoma team is any better that the others that have historically choked in the end.

Oklahoma hasn't been able to dance with the lights on bright in the national title game for the last five years. They've been no better than Ohio State in getting there and losing. It will happen.

Oklahoma will choke, whether it is next week in Stillwater, in the Big 12 Title game, or in the national championship game.

Texas Tech was exposed the other night, but Oklahoma was exposed first in 2003 when the lost to LSU in the national title game and again the next year later when they were plastered by USC in the title game.

Oklahoma hasn't had any significant wins since they beat Chris Winkie and Florida State in 2000 for their last National Title.

Yes, Oklahoma has a much better offense this year than they may have ever had, but have they truly been tested?

Yes, they lost to Texas, but is there really any good defense in the Big 12? Is the Big 12 really that good of an offensive conference or does it just appear that way because there is no defense?

This is something that we are going to figure out in the coming weeks.

This Week's College Football Predictions

Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma

The guns'll be blazin' in Norman on Saturday. Everyone expects a shootout. But not me. Historically, Oklahoma folds when the pressure's on. We thought the Oklahoma State-Tech game would be a shootout and it wasn't. I could be wrong, but Tech shocks the Sooners in Norman. Final score: Texas Tech 55, Oklahoma 31.

Michigan vs. Ohio State

Check the records at the door for this one. Michigan will play above and beyond in this one and may even upset the Buckeyes. Just kidding; Michigan is terrible. Final score: Ohio State 38, Michigan 7.

BYU vs. Utah

It's been dubbed the Holy War by many and should be one heck of a game. Believe it or not, BYU has an outside shot to still crack the BCS with some help. This game could be a better shootout than Tech- Oklahoma. BYU is bigger and more athletic; they win in a thriller. Final score: BYU 38, Utah 35.

Iowa vs. Minnesota

It has been a great season for Minnesota and a disappointment at the same time. Minnesota started 7-1 but after three straight losses, they sit at 7-4. Iowa on the other hand has had a great season, they beat Penn State and spoiled a national title run. Iowa continues to ride that wave and wins the Floyd of Rose-dale. Final score: Iowa 21, Minnesota 14.

Oregon State vs. Arizona

The Beavers can see the light at the end of the tunnel. They need just two more wins, or one win and a USC loss, to reach the Rose Bowl. Standing in their way is Arizona, who are 4-1 at home this season. Mike Stoops' team puts up a heck of a fight, but the beavers control their own destiny and they know it. Final score: Oregon State 31, Arizona 21.

Boise State vs. Nevada

The Pistol offense can give anyone fits. But Boise is head and shoulders better than Nevada and they know that if they win out they reach the BCS. Don't write this one off as a blow out because I think it was last year these two went at it in one of the highest scoring games in Division one history. Final score: Boise 31, Nevada 17.

Michigan State vs. Penn State

Papa Joe and the Knittny Lions control their own destiny. They beat the Spartans and they win the Big 10 title. The Spartans, on the other hand, need a win and an Ohio State loss to win the Big 10, other wise Ohio State wins it.

This one is close but because it's in Happy Valley I'll give this one to Penn State. Final score: Penn State 38, Michigan State 31.

Nebraska-Kansas State: Huskers Slam Wildcats 55-28

Joe Ganz has been named Big 12 player of the week, and Nebraska picked up its seventh win of the season following a 55-28 drubbing of Kansas State in Manhattan. Ganz rushed for a career-high 95 yards and threw for 270 more as he joined Zac Taylor as the only Husker to pass for 3,000 yards in a season.

On the ground, Heu led the way with 72 yards, while Marcus Mendoza had 58, Lucky 47, and Castillo 51. All totaled, the Huskers rushed for a season-high 340 yards on the day.

Now with just a hapless Colorado team coming to town a week from Friday, we have a shot at an eight-win season. A lot better than 5-7, wouldn't you say?

Not only that, we also have a real shot at a pretty good bowl game, considering we travel well. The Holiday Bowl or the Peach Bowl isn't out of the question. It is also a possibility that we will face Bo's old team LSU.

It all hinges on whether or not we win next Friday's game. A loss could put us in the Alamo Bowl, possibly against Ohio State, Penn State, or Michigan State. A win and we play in the Holiday Bowl or possibly the Peach Bowl.

This Week's College Football Predictions: Big 12 Matchups and More

What a game! After that debacle against Oklahoma, to say we needed that one would have been a massive understatement. And you know what—a Big 12 title game appearance still isn't out of the question. Currently we sit in second place in the North (3-3) one game behind Missouri (4-2).

Now here are some predictions for this week's upcoming games.

Nebraska vs. Kansas State

Manhattan is always a tough place to play, no matter how K-State is doing. Again, the outcome depends on what Husker team shows up. Black Shirts were handed out this week in practice, so the defense should be inspired to play hard. This game will hinge on the performance of our offense and the play calling of Shawn Watson.

Final Score: Nebraska 34, Kansas State 24

South Carolina vs. Florida

NEVER count out the Ol' Ball Coach. The environment in the swamp should have no effect on Spurrier and his boys. Spurrier is drawing on the fact that Florida already lost to Ole Miss at home to motivate his team. This one is close. Don't be surprised if the Gamecocks pull off the shocker.

Final Score: Florida 31, South Carolina 28

Missouri vs. Iowa State

Husker fans should be pulling for the Cyclones in this one. Missouri and Kansas wins mean that Kansas and Missouri play for the North Division title next week and Nebraska is eliminated from contention. This is where it gets confusing like baseball, so follow closely: If Kansas and Nebraska lose this week and Missouri wins, Missouri wins the North.

However, if Missouri loses this week and Nebraska and Kansas (not likely—Kansas plays Texas this week) win, then it sets up this situation: Missouri and Kansas play next week as well as Nebraska and Colorado. If Missouri wins they win the North, and if Kansas wins and Nebraska loses, Kansas wins the North, but if Kansas and Nebraska win, Nebraska wins the North.

It's all very confusing. But none of this matters because Missouri wins going away.

Final Score: Missouri 41, Iowa State 3

Kansas vs. Texas

Kansas is a good football team. They are no longer a doormat in the Big 12. However, they don't have enough to beat a Texas team on a mission to win a National title. Kansas puts up a fight, but in the end they just don't have enough in the tank.

Final Score: Texas 41, Kansas 28

(Just for fun) Jets vs. Patriots

Not even Tom Brady would make a difference in the Patriots' season this year. They are old on defense and too young on offense. The balance of power in the AFC East is literally on the line in this one. I don't think it's a stretch to say that the winner of this one takes the division.

A game like this has Brett Favre's name written all over it. This one will be epic—probably an instant classic.

That being said, the Patriots could put all doubt to rest if they dominate in this one. But I don't see that happening. In fact, I see the balance of power at least for this year shifting.

Final Score: Jets 41, Patriots 38

This Week's College Football Predictions

Kansas vs. Nebraska

If the right Nebraska team shows up, points will be scored in bunches in this one. If the wrong Nebraska team shows up, it will be a Kansas romp. Nebraska's drive to get bowl eligible puts them over the top in this one.

Final score: Nebraska 38, Kansas 31

Penn State vs. Iowa

Don't sleep on this one. Stanzi is a good quarterback, and Greene is one of the best backs in the country getting no attention. The fact that this one is at Kennick makes the environment ripe for an upset. Penn State gets caught napping in this one but hold on for the win.

Final score: Penn State 21, Iowa 17

Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma State

A scenario could play out in the Big 12 where Tech and Texas win out, and Bama, Penn State, and possibly Florida lose. This would leave a possible Texas-Texas Tech rematch in the BCS title game. As far as this game goes, Oklahoma State doesn't have enough to pull this one out in Lubbock.

Final score: Tech 41, Oklahoma State 31

Alabama vs. LSU

LSU has had trouble with good teams this year. Because it is in Baton Rouge, LSU keeps it close.

Final Score: Bama 38, LSU 24

Oklahoma vs. Texas A&M

This is a classic trap game for Oklahoma. A&M is having a down year, and Oklahoma has Tech at home next week. Throw in College Station and you get the recipe for an upset. Oklahoma gets pushed a little in this one.

Final Score: Oklahoma 31, Texas A&M 10

Missouri vs. Kansas State

This one is significant because a Nebraska win and a Missouri loss cause a three-way tie for first in the North. With Missouri's recent struggles, this one is closer than the experts think.

Final score: Missouri 38, Kansas State 31

Nebraska Huskers Show Heart but Lose to Texas Tech 37-31

All right, I'll admit I was wrong.

They won't be picking pieces of us out of the field in Lubbock. We managed not to get embarrassed. But I still stand by the comments of my last article.

We showed heart and improvement, but one game doesn't make a trend—and at the risk of contradicting myself, history doesn't remember what type of effort you gave or how close the game was. A loss is still a loss, whether you lose by 70 or seven.

We are a team without an identity. Physicality used to be the staple of Husker football. We would pound and pound and pound until we beat the snot out of whomever we played.

Now what are we? What is the staple of our program? What is our identity now?

Do you know?

If you do, please tell me because I certainly have no idea what it is. Until we figure that out, we will never be able to return to greatness.

Nebraska's Destruction By Missouri Shows Why Huskers Are No Longer Special

In all my life I never thought that I would see a performance at Memorial Stadium like I saw last night. It was completely embarrassing. As a team we just simply gave up.

I don't blame Bo completely for last night's slaughter. There are a lot of people to blame.

First off, I blame each and every alumnus and alumna that got together and forced the firing of Frank Solich. I blame the sportswriters in the state of Nebraska and the fans that said the option is a dinosaur and the game has passed us by, and that to win we need to pass the ball.

Well, to every fan out there that wanted to modernize Nebraska football, that got tired of three yards and a cloud of dust and couldn't live with nine, 10, 11-win seasons consistently, you got your wish. This is what each and every one of you wanted. In the span of five years we went from a powerhouse to a doormat.

I thought coming into this season we would win nine or 10 games. Now I don't think we'll win more than four. They're going to be picking pieces of us out of the field in Lubbock, Texas for the next 10 years after next week's game.

For you fans out there that supported Solich, or at least the 9-10 wins is better than what happened last night philosophy, I'm sorry. For you fans out there that needed instant gratification and thought that we could have success with a passing offense, you got what you wanted.

Nebraska isn't special anymore. What made us special was our individuality. The fact that we ran an offense nobody else did and were successful with it, the fact that teams used to do anything and everything possible not to come to Nebraska. Now teams do anything and everything possible to come to Nebraska.

To all the fans, sportswriters, alumni, and donors out there that supported the athletic regime under Perlman, Pederson, and Callahan, good job.

New era dawns in Lincoln, Huskers beat Western Michigan 47-24

The first game of the Bo Pelini era kicked of tonight in Lincoln. The offense was impressive as Joe Ganz threw for 345 yards and four touchdowns with on 20-36 passing. He became the first quarterback in Nebraska history to throw for 300 or more yards four times in a career.

On the night Nebraska had 483 yards of total offense but more than that they had diverse play calling. Shawn Watson showed a little bit of everything offensively which kept the Western Michigan defense off balance for the most part.

The defense was also impressive allowing only eight rushing yards but the secondary allowed over 300 yards passing. That won't cut it in the big 12 with teams like Texas Tech and Missouri. Lead by Cody Glenn who ended the game with a team leading 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Nebraska lead 34-10 at the half.

Poor play by the huskers combined with better play from the Broncos lead to a slight Western Michigan comeback in the second half. However the huskers would hold on for a 47-24 victory. All in all it was a better effort on both sides of the ball that lead to the 23rd consecutive opening day victory for Nebraska.

How Good Will the Nebrasa Huskers Really Be This Year?

A lot of people want to know how good the Huskers will be this year. I think I might have the answer.

Like Charlie Weis at Notre Dame, Bo Pelini is walking into a situation where nothing isn't a quick fix. Bill Callahan was a great recruiter, but he couldn't motivate his players to play. Bo will get them to play at the level they are capable of.

I believe that if Marlon Lucky and Joe Ganz have breakout years, we will compete on a national stage this year.

If we're undefeated and the defense is smothering when we hit Oklahoma, this could be a special year for Bo and the Huskers.

The Virginia Tech game will tell how the season is going to go. If we beat them or lose closely, this could still be a great year—but if we get blown out this will be another miserable season.
