Oakland Bike Rally for Athletics, August 30

Oakland A’s fans are taking to the streets on August 30 to bring the city and team exactly what it needs: a rally parade.

“We want to create the kind of community that A’s games used to draw,” says Mae Schultz, co-planner of the Free Oakland bike rally. “This is about being active and celebrating Oakland. This is about the community really meaning it when they shout ‘Let’s go Oakland!’”

The rally parade of boom boxes and noisemakers, flags, and tailgating grills – all attached to bicycles will start at Oakland’s Lois the Pie Queen at 10 a.m.

Co-planner Jake Gabel suggests ordering the “Reggie Jackson Special.”

"We chose our meeting locations near public transportation stops so people could join in throughout the day. We also wanted each place to display a positive and vital part of Oakland’s community. Lois the Pie Queen is Oakland’s history. You see it on the walls, you taste it in the food, and hear it from the wait staff."

From there the parade follows a path of eating, games involving Oakland’s history, and whole lot of community pride.

"Fliers and schedules will be posted all over Oakland and San Francisco although the best way to get updates about the event are at our blogs (wordpress and mlblogs)." says Mae.

The rally will be providing water, sunscreen, noise makers, and a safe place for fans to leave their bikes during the game.

"Our top priority is to create a safe environment for families to enjoy themselves while enjoying Oakland," says Jake. "And how perfect is it that it’s on a fireworks night at the Coliseum? This is an excellent opportunity to take some well deserved pride our team and city."
