Suspense Behind The Two Biggest Fights Of '09

Although signatures are yet to be on the contracts of two of the biggest names in boxing, it seems that only a major disaster would stop the fight between Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao (or the other way around?) from taking place at the MGM Grand on November 14.

This completes the final half of the 2009 thriller of a double header fight.

The other, as fans know, was cooked up three months ago, and supposed to take place July 18. Instead, it will be taking place on September 18—nearly two months before the Pacquiao—Cotto fight: Mayweather vs. Marquez .

Although it seems that this match is like a curtain raiser to the Pacquiao—Cotto fight, it does contain an amount of suspense for the avid boxing fans who know the real deal of the sport. This will amount to the event becoming a box office draw, and hopefully, garnering some respectable pay-per-view numbers.

But, you'd have to be blind to miss that the bigger of these two fights is the one taking place on November 14.

To justify this pronouncement, let us analyze both fights and get the pros and cons.

MAYWEATHER - MARQUEZ FIGHT

This fight, with all due respect to Marquez fans, is billed as it is and cannot be the other way around: On paper, this fight is a mismatch. Some also think this it may be a tune up fight.

That is why the Pacquiao—Cotto (or Cotto—Pacquiao fight) is much more intriguing.

In reality, many observers think that Marquez has an outside chance to defeat the former P4P champion. Marquez has been actively winning fights after his heartbreaking loss to Manny Pacquiao. Many believed that he won that fight anyway, which makes him "undefeated" in his last six fights.

Meanwhile, Mayweather is coming off of a long hiatus, and in high level competition such as big time boxing, this will surely affect his performance.

Will Marquez be able to cash in on this advantage?

Or will Mayweather be able to prove, beyond a doubt, that he is the great fighter that he say he is?

This will be the curiosity factor creating drama for boxing fans.

PACQUIAO—COTTO OR COTTO—PACQUIAO FIGHT

From the title itself, you can say this fight is equal in billing, and therefore a more electrifying, action-packed fight is expected. This fight can be summed up into power vs. speed, or speed vs. power, whichever is applicable.

The question is...

Can Manny use his speed to evade Miguel's power and catch him with straight lefts and right crosses to win?

Or can Miguel catch Manny with power jabs and punches, bringing devastation to the P4P king, and winning back his fearsome boxing persona?

The answers to this questions are intriguing and will only be revealed when the two square off.

That is why this is the fight of the year.

CONCLUSION

The winners of the two fights may well become the adversary in the next fight in 2010, especially if it is Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

As of now, these two fighters are the most sought after in the sport, and surely everyone in the boxing world is waiting for this battle to go down.

Only two fighters can make this event not happen: Marquez and Cotto.

Their answers will only be seen inside the ring.

Manny Pacquiao: The Greatest Boxer of All Time

If you were to choose the greatest boxer of all time, what would be the factors that would be the basis for your selection?

For someone who is an ordinary boxing buff like me, my choosing would be limited to the level of my understanding and information about the sport.

So relying on my utmost knowledge, I would like to declare that Manny Pacquiao is the Greatest Boxer of this Era and should be a candidate for the title of the Greatest Boxer of all Time.

To justify this declaration, I would like to state some facts:

1. The only fighter in history to win four successive bouts in four different divisions against top-level fighters, winning three world titles.

2. The only fighter in history to come from the 106-pound division to go up to 147-pound division and still has a chance to go up to 154 pounds if he chooses to.

3. The only fighter in history to win four lineal weight division championships.

4. The only fighter in history to record wins over the most number of hall of famers in different weight division.

5. Last but not least, the most exciting fighter in the history of boxing. Note: This is subjective. This one factor is reserved for my own opinion.

Other factors, such as being a six-division world title holder, could also be mentioned, but such an accomplishment may not be unique to Manny.

Of all the factors stated above, I think the fifth would be highest of all. The greatness of an individual, especially in the field of sports, is not the quantity, but the quality of wins.

That is where Manny Pacquiao excels. The quality of his fights almost always exceeds expectations. He always surprises his opponents and the spectators, though they thought they knew Manny's ability.

One thing that could be considered as a measure of one's greatness is the ability of the person to produce exciting, eventful, awe inspiring, and unforgettable performances comparable to Tiger Woods’ 16th hole putt at the Masters or Roger Federer’s 14th Grand Slam at the French Open.

And these were just a part of Manny Pacquiao, because as a whole he is incomparable. He already attained the incomprehensible a year ago and now a new level is being eyed, which for any other mortal is next to impossible.

As a conclusion, Manny Pacquiao as the Greatest Fighter Of All Time may mean one thing to me: I never get tired watching his fights, even the old ones, though I watch him time and time again.

Manny Pacquiao And Tiger Woods, Amazing Sportsmen

With the recent come from behind win of the number one golfer Tiger Woods, on the Arnold Palmer Invitational Golf Tournament after almost a year of inactivity due knee injury, one would never ceases amaze how on earth a human being could have done such a feat?

The scenario is almost as if it is written for a movie and all the ingredients of an interesting drama is present as in Tiger is five shots behind, the weather is not at all very good, and this is just the second real tournament he participated in after the long absence.

After a gruelling 17 holes on the final round it comes to the last hole on the 18th where he is given a 15 footer to win outright. It was as if a replay of last years event when he was also given the last shot to win the but this time with a different opponent and a lenght of putt.

But just the same it has all the suspense and drama of a great and exciting sports of golf to which to my mind Tiger Woods makes it more enthralling.

To the boxing world, Manny Pacquiao I think is the one person that should approximate to such feat. In his last fight with De La Hoya he was supposed to lose but then he brought out an sterling performance that amazed even those who already know him.

He brought down the mighty Golden Boy of boxing without a doubt and silenced all those who opposed him as the best Pound for Pound boxer in the world. He did it not by luck nor by determination but by excellent performance worthy to be called great by any means or by any one.

These two great sportsmen continues to bring joy, amazement, entertainment, and happiness to all of us who follow their path for glory and thereby felt as if we are one with them in their life pursuit of excellence and honor.

May their lives continue to bring more fruits of the same and give us amazing moments.

Manny Pacquiao: What The Future Holds

With little more than a month to go until his much anticipated fight with Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton, Manny Pacquaio seems to have never ending storylines and twists that only a soap opera could equal.

The latest, of course, is the media partner brouhaha which, to the wider world, does not deserve a mention, but in the Philippines, created a lot of controversy.

The saga made such an impact that, after it was finally resolved, no lesser authority than the President's Office declared that it was happy that Manny and the media partner had come to an agreement.

As I recall, before the fight was confirmed there was also a very interesting story that Manny agreed to sign the contract after one of his closest friends, who does not drink beer, persuaded him by agreeing to sink three beers if Manny signed.

The UK media also reported an intriguing Manny anecdote. They stated that he was able to attract many of his fans to attend the promotional day in England, even though it was supposed to be a work day. Thousands came and missed their day jobs to to see their idol.

These are some of the stories that are testament to the fact that "The Pacman" has become larger than life. He is a soap opera that needs no production staff, no TV station, and no sponsors. Every week he is on the news, especially in the Philippines.

What could be the significance of these events?

To the ordinary person like me, this is nothing more than hype, intended to attain one goal; to advertise the upcoming Hatton-Pacquaio fight and ensure it will be a blockbuster. No problem with that, is there?

However, there is an intriguing question that comes to my mind after analyzing these events. There must be a reason for these events to happen, which will surely affect the future of Manny as a person, after he has hung up his gloves.

What then, does the future hold for Manny after boxing?

This is the question I would like you to answer, and I have a little poll which is not limited—you can put in what you think is best.

Thanks and god bless.

Manny Pacquiao Lost to Juan Manuel Marquez Two Times

I think many boxing fans, especially those who cannot accept that Manny is simply the best, still think that Manny lost the two fights with JMM. And up to now they are trying hard to convince themselves that Manny is just lucky.

See what they are saying.

In the Diaz fight they say Manny won over a class B fighter when in fact before the fight they are hollering that, with a big DD, the Pacman will surely fail like Morales and Sta Cruz.

With De La Hoya, I think it is a waste of time to write it anymore because all of them know what they predicted and unfortunately they were all wrong. Now they are saying Oscar was a shot fighter. How come?

What I am saying is let us be fair. Let us analyze the fight itself whether we are true or not. I suggest to all those who kept on saying that Manny lost the two fights with JMM to watch both fights on HBO and TOP RANK telecast in order to see the different angles of the fights. Watching them in this way, they may come to realize how the judges scored.

Well for me I have watched both fights a number of times because I for one want to know whether Manny really won or not. And I hate to say those who don't believe that Manny won, is simply he won both fights.

The first fight was a costly error by one judge, but still I think Manny won that if only it was rightly scored assuming the first round was 10 -7 because in round 2,7,8,9,10, & 12 I have Manny at least winning on four rounds and even on the other two. Most notable is rounds 2, 7, 9, & 12. With that Manny should score 115 to 113 to JMM.

The second fight we know very well that the judges scored correctly and they scored according to their line or angle of view, but then as I said if you watched it on different views you would conclude that Manny has won round 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, convincingly and round 1, 7, & 12 at least even. And remember that round three is a 10-8 round so the final score could be 116-114, assuming even rounds are 10-10.

And to think Manny has already progressed so much, it would be a different fight if ever they meet again and I hope what happened to Morales on the third fight with Manny may not happen to JMM.

And then most of the fans wanting the third fight might come up with more excuses and tell JMM was a washed up fighter because he is too much older. This would be unfair to Manny and of course to JMM.

I think we should wait and see because Manny has little time to attain his goal to become the best fighter in the world in this era. This can only be attained if he wins over Ricky Hatton and possibly Mayweather Jr. or Shane Mosley. He has nothing more to prove winning over JMM if only for others who simply refuse to accept defeat.

The Long and Ardous Wait to the Much Anticipated Fight on May 2, 2009

It is 1:25 PM here in Muntinlupa City, Philippines—a city south of Manila and one of the most economically viable place in this country because it is where the Ayala-Alabang Subdivision is situated where most of the richest personalities in the Philippines abode. My place is not where I just mentioned but in between the City Hall and the New Bilibid Prison.

The prison is where the most feared criminals are locked up including those of the terrorist type that is why this city is actually connotative with the Prison.

When somebody asked you where you live and you say Muntinlupa, they would asked—Inside or Outside? Then they would giggle and show that they are just kidding. Actually that was one way of starting a conversation specially with you do not know who pinoy.

Anyway I just read an the article by Michael Klimes calling the coming fight between Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao so intriguing. Well, he clearly described what so intriguing with this fight and so it has helped in reinforcing my desire to see it the soonest. And when I come to my senses, May 2 is still 78 days away. Whew! What a wait, I told to myself.

So I decided to write this piece to divert my mind from the seemingly long and ardous wait come fight time. So here it is.

From far away land with harbor of fishing boats,

there comes a lad of humble beginnings.

Whose only toil is to make ends meet,

and rewards himself with mom's smile he can't forget.

And so it seems the burden becomes heavier,

and all salt mines becomes smaller,

The young lad decided to get bolder,

and finds himself a professional boxer.

At first the world seems friendly,

winning his fights in successive envy.

It got to his head and fought carelessly,

and hit wall of a fighter and paid dearly in three.

                Uncontrolled emotions flying high,

he decided to set foot on an another task.

To forget boxing and walk the normal path,

and earn his salary without getting hurt.

But then fate may already been written,

his destiny is of divine pleading.

A dream makes him a lot stronger,

because he was favored by the Divine Healer.

Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley: The Much More Possible Fight

2009 will be a banner year for boxing specially in the southern divisions beginning welterweight down to flyweight class.

As we have already witnessed how Sugar Shane turned back the hands of time by outclassing the supposed to be impregnable chin of Tony 'the plaster casted hands' Margarito.

And of course The wily and willy Vic 'the loudmouth' Darchinyan won his match aided by ring rope cut on Jorge 'the raging bull' Arce.

I can't help but wait the other scheduled fights in the coming weeks and months.

The done deal have already been in the air for the past days and I can't help but wonder why the fight between that man from Manchester and the mutation of a boxer ala X-Men which many of the medical buff called as an anomally (or is it abnormally?) is like the only fight in town.

Drown in the abyss of the Philippine deep of the media are the coming fights of Miguel Cotto vs Michael Jennings, JMM vs. Juan Diaz, and others which needs to rescued to be in order to be recognized.

The one thing that will highlight this year's boxing event is not the scheduled fights, but the supposedly coming fights which will depend on the results and of course the decisions of the fighters themselves. Nominees are:

           1. Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

           2. Sugar Shane Mosley vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

           3. Manny Pacquiao vs. Sugar Shane Mosley

Of the three of course the the number one will be the blockbuster of a fight. Number two will be desirable but the most possible will be number three. The reason is both fighters are aggreable to fight and are active while Floyd Jr. is non-committal.

The Pacman vs. Sugar Shane tiff off will not be as blockbuster as it would be to break any PPV record but the Sweet Science of boxing will be greatly enhanced by the quality of this fight in terms technique, speed, power, and of course drama inside the ring.

Both are perfect ring gladiator and has the tenacity of a fox that will surely wake us all come fight night. Whoever the winner will be enshrined to boxing immortality and this will add up to the match spicy flavor and surely the heat will result in a slam bang affair comparable to a megaton of action.

But let us not forget, a hank of a man is not aggreable to all this because his main purpose is to own the title of best pound for pound boxer this year and his name is Ricky 'the hitman' Hatton.

And he will be very happy to spoil the fun.

Prelude to the Match of the Century

An expectant fighter ready to raise his hand to acclaim the win that would catapult him to the position he most hoped for—a fight for the match of the century with Floyd Mayweather Jr. This would be the fitting description for the coming fight on May 2 between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton.

Everybody would asked, why is this so? Well, although at present Manny is the pound for pound best boxer, there can be no denying that Pretty Boy Floyd proclaims himself as the best in this era and many would agree.

But this thinking is greatly challenged by Manny Pacquiao's win over Oscar De La Hoya because Floyd Jr.'s win over Oscar is nowhere near Manny's. To compare the two fights is like north to south or east to west, meaning Manny won convincingly while Floyd Jr. did not because it was a split decision.

Actually Oscar was so convinced that he could win over Floyd Jr. that he asked for an immediate rematch. Actually he already planned for this if not for the untimely retirement of Floyd Jr. But with Manny, he exalted him and calling Manny as his idol which he never does to Floyd Jr.

So the boxing greatness which everybody excitedly wants to bestow is now becoming elusive because it has transcended to a different level. A level that is not only for the best boxer of this era, but for the crown held by the King himself Sugar Ray Robinson.

And it all depends on the events and results of the coming fights and whether or not Floyd Jr. is willing to accept the challenge to cement his legacy by fighting the best and not to be content in sitting on his pale crown.

But then if Floyd Jr. decide not to swim to the rising tide of boxing greatness then he might drown to the tsunami of a career called the Pacman because right now the Pacman is being compared to the summa cum laude of a boxer called Henry Armstrong.

And another title or two for the Pacman will eventually catapult him to being the best of all time and Floyd Jr. will be relegated to the second rate chicken of a boxer.

So watch out for the fight on May 2nd, not because it is the match of the century but the prelude to it, if the money man answers the bell.

Manny Pacquiao: The Total Entertainer

I have a feeling that the little brown bomber of boxing is not truly a warrior of violent intents, comparable to PACMAN who devours anything who comes in his way, but a person who will do his best to entertain people.

In his appearance in Guam, Manny belted two songs ala concert scene and tried very hard to please everybody with his performance and commented later that after boxing he may want to continue being a singer.

He said in boxing he practices everyday to perfect his skill while in singing he never had the same time so he assumed when he has the time to concentrate more to his singing career then the result would be more pleasant than his present performance, and I think it is not bad at all.

Not to mention that other extra curricular activities of Manny involves entertainment such as acting (Totoy Bato, Anak ng Kumander), basketball player (he is a player of his own team in the Liga ng Pinoy), darts, cockfighting, and last but not least, politics.

Well politics may not be the usual entertainment stuff, but it can be entertaining at times.

But right now Manny is the total entertainer in boxing and he pursues it with total intent. He intends to maintain, if not surpass, all the expectations of his fans not only in the Philippines but in the whole world.

Boxing may be a violent sport which not everyone's likes but there is a factor that makes it transcend to become a box office draw like Oscar De La Hoya did and I think Manny Pacquiao is doing the same thing.

<![endif]-->

The most awaited fight for this year of the Ox is already sure to happen as both fighters has already signed the contract and the formal announcement is already scheduled within the week.

This is a sigh of relief to those who are closely monitoring and following the round by round happenings in the negotiation. As one of those, I was glad and at the same time learned something about Negotiating 101.

I must admit that the decisions made during that period made me realize that the fight is considered 50 percent won by the fighters as it is signed but 100 percent won by fans like me.

By just knowing that the fight will happen brings excitement, expectation, and hope or as Larry Merchant borrowed from President Barack Obama, the Audacity of Hope.

What then is the hope I am looking forward to? Well as we all know, most boxing purist consider this match as the true Dream Match because disparity in size is almost nonexistent. They are evenly matched as one can see below:

Name Manny Pacquiao Ricky Hatton

Age 30 30

                                          169cm 171cm

Rounds boxed 291 274

Last 6 fights – won all won 5 lost 1

It is interesting also analyze their past six fights which will have a factor to determine their strength and weaknesses:

             Manny Pacquiao Ricky Hatton

            ANALYSIS

· Please note that Manny Pacquiao in the last six fights has fought four times in 130 lbs and once each in 135 and 147 lbs while Ricky Hatton is a legitimate 140 pounder and has fought 2 times at 147 lbs. With reference to these we can say that Ricky has the edge.

· Manny has won all his fights with four TKO’s, one UD, and one SD while Hatton has lost one on TKO and won three by UD, one by KO, and one by TKO. Manny has the edge

· Manny has fought five title fights and one non-title fight with popular De La Hoya while Ricky has fought six title fights but lost one with pound-for-pound king Mayweather Jr. Manny has slight edge.

· Manny has fought all his fight with fighters aged 30 above except for one which is Solis aged 28 years old while Ricky has fought three fighters below 30 and three fighters 30 and above. Ricky has the edge.

· Manny has won over fighters with combined wins of 27 fights while Ricky has won over fighters with combined wins of 25 fights. So Manny has the edge.

· Manny has fought only 52 rounds in six fights to average 8.6 rounds per fight while Ricky fought 61 rounds to average 10.2 rounds per fight. Manny has the edge.

· All of their past six fights were fought in the USA so both have no distinct advantage with regards to crowd support.

· Height – Ricky; Reach – Manny; Age – Even; Speed – Manny; Power – Ricky; Chin – Even; Style – Manny; Body Strength – Even; Hunger – Ricky.

After tallying the above criteria we have a result:

            Manny Pacquiao Ricky Hatton

                Seven points Five points

So, from the data above the possibility of Manny winning the fight is seven out of 15, which is 47 percent, while Ricky has five out of 15, which is 33 percent, and the chance of a draw is three out 15 with a percentage of 20 percent.

It is therefore safe to say that Manny Pacquiao has the upper hand on this coming fight with Ricky Hatton. Coming May 2, the Fifth Division Belt will be in Manny's hand.

The Saga of the 2008 Pound For Pound Best Fighter

The curtain had been raised. A Sports Superstar is born, his name—Manny "The Pacman" Pacquiao, the 2008 best fighter and No. 1 pound for pound boxer of the world.

He also won the recognition of being the best fighter in 2006 but this time a different level has been hurdled. A combination of uniqueness, popularity, excellence, improvement, and sportsmanship has been added to his cap.

In 2006, no one ever thought that this little guy, although the best fighter at that, would become a legitimate contender to De La Hoya, Mayweather Jr., or even Miguel Cotto just because these are the big guys. Today we are talking about it as if it is downright normal and forgetting that two years ago it would have been a no no and you will be laughed at, at some point be called a dreamer or might have to be told to have yourself examined by a neuro.

These were the situation in 2006 and now 2009 The Pacman is lined up for Ricky Hatton, Mayweather Jr., possibly Cotto or Margarito, and whoever, we cannot guess because of the fluidity of Manny's reputation today. As the saying goes, the world of boxing is at the palm of his hand and only he could determine which way he will go.

To us who is closely watching the show, the fans who derive unlimited joy and mesmerizing emotions which somehow never been felt for other fighters, hope to see the continuing saga of the small compared to his counterparts in welterweights, but great and true blooded fighter from the Philippines.

Manny Pacquiao's Legacy

Manny Pacquiao's Legacy? You wonder is it timely enough to talk about the Pacman's legacy when in fact he is still on the mainstream of the world's current events and news headlines? Could it be written now?

I don't know about others but for me as of this moment it is compelling to talk about Manny's legacy. Manny aside from being the wealthiest ever sport hero on Philippine soil, has done so many great things here that it will take a lot of space on this article to list all of them and all are in the level of being a legacy.

So I would limit myself to most generalized topic to be considered, although some might find it an injustice, I beg for your pardon.

First and foremost, Manny will hand down from generations to come are his great fights in the boxing arena where I describe it as an action packed novel not lacking in all the aspect of fireworks, struggle, drama, with highlights of emotions mostly of victory and humility. One could watch his fights over and over again and feel the same feeling the first time he saw it.

And this is because most of his great fights, he is the underdog and he eventually wins. This is I think the compelling reason why most of his fights are better to watch than any other fights.

Coming in second is his life story. A true to life rags to riches and fame story that is very unique. From an unknown little town in Mindanao to the famous cities of America is the background of his story and from the boy selling stolen cigarettes as a famous boxing commentator always note to the pound for pound greatest boxer in the whole world not to mention being hailed as one of the greatest sportsman of the year by one of the greatest media company in the world. This I think will be hard to beat in terms of legacy.

Thirdly is his influence not only to all Filipinos but to all boxing fans in the whole world. I say Floyd Mayweather might be the complete and intelligent fighter the world has seen but still his influence to the majority of boxing fans remains pale in comparison to De La Hoya during their prime and I think as of this moment Pacquiao has inherited that by his domination of Oscar in the manner never thought by anybody.

As of now the saga of the little brown bomber known as Pacman will continue and its nobody's guess what will be in store for the still young fighter at the age of thirty. I hope he continues to bring happiness to million of people specially to those who look up to him as a fellow little brown pinoy with under privileged life he used to live.
