Fantasy Baseball: Free Agents Demanding Pick-Ups in Your Winners' League

Okay, so I'm in a winners' league with eleven others who each won their leagues last season. I know it's still early in this season. I also know being just ahead of the middle of the pack at this point doesn't have me panicking.

Yet, I was stunned to see what available talent is still marinating in the free agent pool.

At catcher, there is still John Buck. Yes, the Kansas City Royals are in first place in the AL Central and this fella', on his way to the prime age of 29, has a lot to do with it.

Listed at 6'3" and 220 pounds, some offseason workouts targeting his core might have him trying out for the "home-town" Chiefs. First, he's already well on his way to becoming an All-Star. He's only played in three games at catcher, but the Royals are undefeated with him having doing so.

A Word to Royals' management: Keep Miguel Olivo away from the catcher position and the starting lineup. Otherwise, baseball in Kansas City will be back to its old ways—a winning percentage of .333 (2-4).

If John Buck can help the Kansas City Royals reach first place, perhaps he deserves a shot at giving your team that opportunity as well.

Three home runs and eight runs batted in at the catcher position in limited playing time should already make him a leading vote-getter in the All-Star race.

Let's slide down to another AL Central team, the Chicago White Sox, and first baseman Paul Konerko. He's certainly doing his part on the team, sporting a .357 batting average.

Early run production has him eyeing the likes of 2006, when he drove in 113 and went deep 35 times. An average of .313 would be just gravy at this point after two seasons under the .259 mark. If your first baseman is struggling or you swap them to third base to strengthen your lineup, consider making the move.

Speaking of propelling a team to first place, how about Japan?

Having been on both WBC championship teams, second baseman Akinori Iwamura knows a little something about that. Yet the Devil Rays seem to know a little bit more than all of us regarding his lightning speed around the base paths—something hidden in each of his first two major league seasons when he averaged just 10 steals.

This season, three stolen bases and an on-base percentage easily over .400 may have the Rays considering flipping their record around by flipping their batting order—having Iwamura batting lead-off or second would allow him to be a great anchor to the team's batting average as well as run production.

Give it a shot yourself if you want cheap speed.

While we're at it, let's put together the best double-play combo I know available on the free agent market—and perhaps overall up to this point: Iwamura's teammate, Jason Bartlett, in the slot at shortstop.

Like Iwamura, Bartlett is also buried at the bottom of the Devil Rays' lineup. Sometimes he bats at nine and sometimes a bit higher to make him feel a tad better about himself.

Note to Rays' management: consider flipping the order around. When Jason Bartlett has multiple hits and scores at least a run, the Rays' are undefeated at 3-0.

Can you believe another talent from Chicago is also available: former first-round pick and third baseman Josh Fields. At age 26, Fields is getting an opportunity to finally play a full season for the White Sox from start to finish.

Batting in the second slot for the White Sox is going to give Fields plenty of opportunities to best his 23 home runs in 2007. And while he hasn't had a home run yet this season, he is in the middle of a six-game hitting streak. Average now and power later sounds like a good strategy to me.

I don't want to leave baseball fans on the west coast out, but what is the deal with Randy Winn?

This San Francisco Giants' outfielder is only a mere 38 percent owned, barely putting him ahead of Rodney Dangerfield when it comes to respect. Not sure why he doesn't get respect? Maybe it's his over-.300 average over the past two seasons?

Could it be averaging 20 steals? Or maybe it's the age of 33? Whatever the case, don't be apart of the 62 percent. He's my vote for the underdog to come through, again, at the lucky age of 33 with another .300+ campaign.

I really don't want to throw another White Sox player into the mix here, but it's hard with Mark Buehrle available. If anyone has a shot at being 2009's version of 2008's Mike Mussina (basically a veteran pitcher who is plucked off of free agency only to have their owners figure out they've discovered a 20-game winner), this guy is as good a bet as any.

The White Sox only expect him to go six innings each start. So as long as he posts a 3.33 ERA or, even better, continues to hold hitters to a .190 average, you're going to be looking at not only the American Leagues' next 20-game winner, but a potential Cy Young award winner as well.

For our bullpen, let's return to our roots in the Midwest.

St Louis' very own and potential Cardinals' closer, Chris Perez. The ownership on this guy comes in at a very unrealistic 13 percent, but having been recalled from AAA after a carousel of closers was rehearsed by manager Tony LaRussa.

I'm willing to put my chips on the table that Chris Perez easily gets a shot at double-digit saves the remainder of the season, all the while posting a respectable ERA around the three mark.

Time to Clean-Up: Starring Nelson Cruz As Josh Hamilton's Bodyguard

Those looking for this year's Josh Hamilton—a breakout slugger—look no further than teammate Nelson Cruz. Nelson, who will turn 29 this season, has made a career in the minor leagues.

He capped off his minor career last season with a bang; a bang which included blasting 37 home runs and batting in 99 runs, not to mention a .342 batting average. Last year's spectacular performance in triple-A earned him the Pacific Coast League MVP award.

Nelson's triple-A contract with Oklahoma was bought out on Aug. 25, 2008.

His PCL MVP performance had earned him a starting gig in right field for the Texas Rangers. For the first time in Nelson Cruz' career, he also began to translate his minor league successes into major league production. Batting .330 with seven home runs and 26 runs batted in just 31 games played.

This season will be different. Cruz won't be buried in the Rangers' minor leagues, or even in the lineup at the seventh slot. No, he'll be right up in prime time, batting clean-up behind last years American League RBI leader. Josh Hamilton.

Nelson Cruz' new duties this year will include clearing the bases for a team which scored a league-leading 901 runs last season. And I expect him to follow the Texas Rangers Tradition.

2009 Major League Projection - .291 avg, 30 HR, 101 RBI.

Coors Field and Rangers Park in Arlington Call Fenway Park's Bluff

Some say Wade Boggs would've never made it to the Hall of Fame had he not played at Fenway. Others might say last year's AL MVP Dustin Pedroia wouldn't have been MVP if it wasn't for the "green monster."

Meanwhile, the air around Coors Field in Colorado is said to be like no other in the major leagues. Being within walking distance from where their former shared home with the Denver Broncos used to be, it's no surprise it was known as "Mile High Stadium." Baseballs simply feel and travel differently in Denver.

Ask any Texas Rangers' fan and they'll tell you they're a pitcher away from making the playoffs. Did you ever wonder if there's something in Arlington scaring away quality pitchers? Maybe it's true, maybe the hot and humid weather in Arlington, Texas is helping tightly stitched major league baseballs find their way to the bleacher seats?

From Boston to Denver, and down to the south in Arlington. Something seems to be benefiting hitters in each of these ballparks, more so then seems to be the norm.

After gaining 3,000 career hits; Boggs became a lock for the Hall of Fame. How much did playing for the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park benefit the twelve-time All-Star? Quite simply, a lot! To the tune of a phenomenal .369 batting average.

Every other ballpark? .306. While still good, he never would've been able to accumulate 3,000 career hits without the help of over 3,800 plate appearances in Fenway Park.

Fast forward to 2008 AL MVP, Dustin Pedroia. Over the course of Pedroia's short career, he's batting .339 at home and noticeably less on the road; to the tune of 51 points, at .288.

No one is saying Dustin Pedroia is Hall of Fame material, but the parallels to Wade Boggs are there. Both clearly having benefited from beginning their careers in a Boston Red Sox uniform.

How about Coors Field or the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington? Are these the modern-day versions of a hitters' dream?

Let's look at modern-day examples starting with Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Last season, American League RBI leader and Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton batted an entire eighty-two points higher at home then on the road, .345 versus .263.

And while the home versus away discrepancies of Ian Kinsler, Hank Blalock, and Michael Young aren't as evident—they still manage to add evidence that Rangers Ballpark in Arlington is padding hitters' stats.

In three seasons - Ian Kinsler—.321 at home vs .259 away - (+.62)

In seven seasons - Hank Blalock—.306 at home vs .244 away - (+.62)

In nine seasons - Michael Young—.322 at home vs .279 away - (+.43)

Let's switch from a stadium notorious for hosting games with temperatures in the 90s to a completely different climate. The high and dry air of Denver, Colorado—Coors Field.

Only two teams in major league baseball have ever boasted three hitters to clear the 40-home run plateau in the same season. The 1973 Atlanta Braves and the Colorado Rockies—twice, '96 and '97.

It quickly became apparent during these early days in Coors Field that something was different. Baseballs were traveling out of the ballpark in Denver way more often then any other National League city.

Hitters such as Ellis Burks, Dante Bichette, Larry Walker, Andres Galarraga, and Vinny Castilla had noticeable career years playing for Denver but faltered elsewhere. This leads me into Matt Holliday; who was involved in a trade which sent him to Oakland during the off-season.

During his five seasons playing in Coors field, he posted a .357 average, everywhere else? A more "normalized" .280. That's a different of .77 points!

Here's a current Denver Rockies' players who've benefited from the thin air:

In six seasons - Garrett Atkins—.337 at home vs .260 away - (+.77)

In six seasons - Clint Barmes—.298 at home vs .228 away - (+.70)

In 12 seasons - Todd Helton—.362 at home vs .294 away - (+.68)

We have factual data that Coors Field in Denver and Rangers Ballpark in Arlington significantly skew stats in the favor of the offense.

For the season ahead, I would make a few assumptions. First, I'm going to bet that Matt Holliday bats more towards .280—his career average outside of Coors Field, then his .357 inside it. Second, based on the above data, the aforementioned hitters will continue to significantly perform better at their home stadiums.

And third, if you're an up and coming pitcher who wants to make a name for yourself in the bigs, you'd have an easier time doing it outside of Boston, Arlington, or Denver.

Chris Ray Eyes Baltimore Orioles' Closer Role

Before being faced with a serious elbow injury, Chris Ray was locked in as the O's closer, and deservedly so. At age 24, Chris went on to post a 2.73 ERA and record 33 saves.

It wasn't until the following season in 2007 that something peculiar began happening.

Chris lost his dominance, but being the warrior that he is, kept on insisting nothing was wrong. Despite having discomfort in his elbow, even taking drugs to ease the swelling and null the pain, Chris still insisted he felt fine.

Ultimately, management decided on July 25 it was time to put Ray on the disabled list.

A few more weeks of throwing and more pain, and by Aug. 16, it was time for ligament replacement surgery.

Now, just two short seasons later, would you have expected Orioles' manager Dave Trembley have this to say regarding Ray? "He has exceeded what we had expected as far as results are concerned this early in camp."

Three pitching appearances later, I wonder what Trembley is saying now. Chris Ray remains perfect through spring training.

Given the thirty teams in major league baseball, only nine of them have a pitcher with as many or more innings pitched who has allowed a total of zero earned runs through camp.

There's only one difference: None of them just came off of reconstructive Tommy John elbow surgery.

Don't tell that to Chris Ray—whose goal of re-fortifying his position as the Orioles' closer becomes more evident with each pitch.

Fantasy Baseball Aug. 28: Dissecting Thursday's MLB Games

I hope everyone enjoyed Monday's picks. The real stars of the show weren't the hitters, but the pitchers. The three mentioned as potential spot starts: Brett Myers, Clayton Richard, and Mike Pelfrey, all had solid outings. They combined for three wins, a complete game, 18 strikeouts, and a microscopic ERA of 1.64!

Hopefully all the readers in head-to-head leagues started the week off just as good as those pitchers did. Now it's time to start the end of the final regular-season week with just as much success:

The final game of the final series to be played by the Boston Red Sox in "the house that Ruth built" starts at 1:05 EDT. Jon Lester (12-5, 3.49) will be taking on Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.45). Sorry Red Sox fans, I'm going to have to side with Mike Mussina and the New York Yankees. I expect them to close out the 85-year-old stadium with a victory versus the divisional rivals. Not only do I expect C Jose Molina to call a great game for "Moose," I also expect him to contribute with the bat. He's 3-for-5 over his career against Lester.

The only other day game dwarfs in comparison. We'll see Cincinnati's Aaron Harang (4-13, 5.35) take on Houston's Brandon Backe (8-12, 5.54). This goes down as the only game of the day where both starters sport an ERA greater than five. Try 2B/3B/SS Geoff Blum as a spot start, as he is 5-for-9 with a HR and two RBI against Harang.

The night starts off in Hotlanta. I like Anibal Sanchez (2-2, 3.99) a lot in this game. Even though the major markets of New York and Philadelphia are hogging all the media attention, Florida is still alive in the NL East. The competition will be putting Charlie Morton (3-8, 6.39) on the mound. He's easily countered by two lefty batters, who are available in several leagues down the stretch. 1B Mike Jacobs and C John Baker are a combined 2-for-4, with a HR and three RBI, against the struggling right-hander.

Clayton Kershaw will be facing the Nationals and 3B Ryan Zimmerman. A career .316 hitter against lefties, Ryan has gone 1-for-3 with a steal his previous time versus Kershaw. Opposing the Dodgers will be John Lannan (7-12, 3.95). Look for 1B/3B/SS Nomar Garciaparra on the waiver wire, as he is hitting .300 this season against lefties. His prior experience against Lannan is no different, 1-for-3 with two RBI.

The Toronto Blue Jays are going to give John Parrish (1-0, 4.05) another shot. He's been bouncing around between AAA and the majors, and he's back up again. He'll be facing a team challenging for the best record in baseball, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Look to OF Rocco Baldelli, flying under the radar in many leagues, as he's actually played a crucial role in the Rays' offense, not missing a beat with Carl Crawford injured. A career .299 hitter against left-handed pitching, Rocco is also 2-for-4 with two BB against Parrish; he might even be due for his first stolen base of the season. He'll look to help Edwin Jackson (10-8, 3.93) get his 11th victory of the season. Edwin has been helping himself of late, winning five of his past six games on the mound. Another great spot-start opportunity if you believe that Tampa Bay is legitimate.

The next game looks like a pitching duel, at least on paper. Cole Hamels (11-8, 3.20) of Philadelphia taking on the Chicago Cubs and Ryan Dempster (15-5, 2.85). Philadelphia needs this game more than Chicago. Hamels is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts versus the Cubs, and I am fully expecting his adrenaline to kick in here and help the Phillies to victory in what may go down as a one-run victory.

There are pitching duels, and then there are slugfests. Texas and Brandon McCarthy (0-0, 2.25) will be in Anaheim to face the Angels and Jon Garland (11-8, 4.49). McCarthy simply doesn't have the endurance to outlast a beat-up Rangers' bullpen, and Jon Garland is probably not looking forward to facing the best offense in baseball. How about giving OF Nelson Cruz a try? While he has struggled in past call-ups to the bigs, this time might be different. Not only does he have a chip on his shoulder, since no one claimed him off of waivers, he just flat-out smashed the competition in AAA. In 103 games and 383 at-bats, Cruz batted .342 with 37 HR and 99 RBI, not to mention his speed of 24 stolen bases. He's seen Garland three times, and has one hit. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a couple more on Thursday night. His story might not be as interesting, but there's also OF Marlon Byrd. Byrd is 3-for-5 against Garland and has hit safely in 19 out of 24 games so far this month.

To cap off the night, Minnesota will put one of their control specialists on the mound, Nick Blackburn (9-8, 3.78). OF Jack Cust will swing at anything and could eventually challenge the single-season strikeout record. For some reason, I like him Thursday night. He's 2-for-3 with a double against Blackburn, and if Cust connects, he could very well give the hometown fans something to cheer about. Dana Eveland (8-8, 4.30) will be taking the mound for Oakland, and he has the potential to pitch well. His claim to fame this season was a complete game against Tampa Bay back in May, where the Devil Rays were held to just three hits. He could do it again, and I'm sure the scouts will be keeping an eye on him as Oakland is waist deep in pitching talent.

Best of luck everyone!

Fantasy Baseball: Monday's Matchups in MLB

First, the Thursday recap. Hitting wise, my picks were not nearly as productive. On the bright side, minus Jim Edmonds going 0-3 (headline picture curse?) and Garret Anderson's 23-game hitting streak coming to a screeching halt with an 0-5 performance, the rest of the lineup managed to combine for eight hits in 26 at-bats, three scores, all while driving in seven runs.

Three pitchers were mentioned as spot-start candidates, due to their availability in many leagues; this was indicated with italics within the article. Two of the three had a no-decision, but it was Oakland's Greg Smith that excelled to the head of the class. The young lefty managed six shutout innings for the win. The good news? He still seems to be available in 81 percent of fantasy leagues.

In many head-to-head fantasy baseball leagues, Monday, Aug. 25 marks a beginning to the final week of the regular season. For some, a good week could be the difference between a bye-week starting next Monday or even just flat-out making the cut!

With that said, it's important that you bring your "A-game" all next week. I'll do my best to help get Monday started off on the right foot, good luck:

The Chicago Cubs, already likely to end the season with the best record in the NL, place their No. 4-man, Ted Lilly on the mound. And although I wouldn't normally recommend 1B Adam LaRoche against another lefty, this time is different. Not only is Lilly allowing lefties to hit .307 against him this season, but Adam is 4-9 with three doubles against Lilly in his career. I'm also a strong advocate of Mr. "Second Half" down the stretch (a.k.a. Adam LaRoche), who is only 26.9 percent owned in fantasy leagues! Opposing the Cubs? Jeff Karstens, who threw six scoreless innings against them in his first start for the Pirates since being traded from the Yankees. If the Cubs didn't read the scouting report yet, he could do it again, but I wouldn't exactly count on that.

Who's looking to break out the buttered popcorn for a pitching duel? Maybe the baseball gods will grant us one, as two playoff contenders face off. Brett Myers takes the mound for the home-team Phillies against Chad Billingsley of the Los Angeles Dodgers. I've been a strong advocate of Brett Myers since he's come back from the minors. He's actually a fixture on all but two of my seven fantasy teams. Look for his 72.7 percent ownership in leagues to near 100 percent after he pitches another gem. Helping on the offensive side for the hometown Phillies will be 3B Pedro Feliz. Billingsley just might be what the doctor ordered for Feliz, who recently returned off the DL just a few days ago. Helping Feliz' cause? He has the most experience vs. Billingsley of any Philly player, at 3-9, with a HR and two RBI.

Two southpaw rookies take to the mound for the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. Clayton Richard will be facing Chris Waters. Clayton Richard lit up AAA earlier this season for a 6-0 record in seven starts, boasting a phenomenally low WHIP of 0.84, well complemented by a 2.84 ERA. That success finally translated into a successful major-league start this past week—six shutout innings and the win. Look for more of the same, as the White Sox are in a dead-heat with the Twins for first place in the AL central.

Cleveland vs. Detroit. This is a matchup of "why exactly are you pitching in the major leagues" vs. "you've already shown us you belong in the bigs!" Zach Jackson wasn't exactly lighting up AAA the past three seasons, putting up an ERA over four each time. On the other side is Andres Galarraga, who is 5-0 in his past six starts. He looks to extend his streak to six. Keep an eye on OF Shin-Soo Choo though, as he is 3-5 with two doubles and an RBI in his career against the overachieving Detroit Tiger pitcher.

Two solid pitchers take to the mound in New York. Houston's Brian Moehler against Mike Pelfrey. The difference between them is that the Mets need to hang on to first place if they want to be playing in October. Pelfrey will help them do that, as he is 10-2 since June 16. Brian Moehler has been just as good, going 5-0 in his past eight starts. The issue at hand might be the home-field advantage, as the Mets are 40-24 at home. The other side of the coin shows the Astros at 31-36 on the road.

The next game gets a potential "slugfest" alert. Even though it's not in the Texas heat, the Rangers will still be playing just slightly up the road a bit. Give 3B Hank Blalock a shot, at only 9.4 percent owned. Those numbers will increase strictly based off of his career line of: 12-30, three HR, and eight RBI against Gil Meche. He will also have his hands full with C Gerald Laird, who is batting .444 in nine career at-bats, against arguably one of the most overpaid pitchers in baseball. Kansas City looks to OF David Dejesus against Texas' Seth Feldman. Dejesus has done phenomenally well in limited playing time against Feldman, 2-2, a HR, two RBI, four BB, and two SB.

The West Coast games start when Oakland's Dallas Braden takes on Anaheim's Jered Weaver. Take a chance with SS Bobby Crosby, who is 2-6 with a HR, three RBI, and a SB against the 10-game winner.

Dan Haren vs. Jake Peavy, sounds like a pitching duel, but it wasn't this past Wednesday when they met. The two combined for 17 H and 10 ER in 11 IP. Counter Haren with OF Jody Gerut, who is 5-10 against him with a solo HR. He's also hit 6 HR already this month. At home, Jake Peavy is "lights out," holding opponents to a .193 batting average. His ERA? An even more impressive 1.42!

Francisco Liriano looks for his fifth-straight win since being called up earlier this month. The man is on fire and he's drawn some easy bait in the form of Miguel Batista and the Seattle Mariners. Look for 2B/SS/3B Nick Punto and OF Jason Kubel to combine and make the most in limited opportunities. Punto's only AB previously against Batista was a two-run shot, while he earned walks in his other three plate appearances, in turn, stealing two bases. Kubel's prior accomplishments against Batista almost pale in comparison, but he is still a perfect 2-2 with an RBI.

Matt Cain, will be at home in San Francisco, looking for just his ninth win of the season. A 1.88 ERA over his past eight games should help his cause. Facing him will be Colorado's lefty Jeff Francis, who has an ERA two full points higher on the season at 5.52, and may be staring loss No. 9 right in the face. Especially if Matt Cain continues his hot streak.

There's good news about the potential spot-starters on the hitting side to kick off this week, as we can field an entire lineup at each position on the field and still have one on the bench. Brett Myers, Clayton Richard, and Mike Pelfrey are all great spot-start opportunities on the pitching side.

Let's start the week off right; consider it the warm-up before the playoffs begin for all you head-to-head players out there in cyberland. For those playing in rotisserie leagues, if you find yourself behind at certain positions and categories, be sure to utilize the spot-start strategy. Most importantly, I wish you good luck. Now is the time to have it!

Fantasy Baseball: Thursday's Matchups and Spot Starts

It's almost Thursday again, and besides Monday, it's one day of the week where you find holes to fill in your fantasy baseball lineup. One of the most under-utilized strategies in fantasy baseball is picking up not just pitchers, but hitters as well, for spot starts.

This strategy is very effective when you are able to dig a little deeper, finding the best matchups available on Mondays and Thursdays. Yes, it does work!

For the sake of the readers who are participating in fantasy baseball, the focus will be on hitters who are not in the top-100 rankings for the season. The idea is to mention players that are available in at least some leagues, if not most average-sized, 12-team leagues, so that the spot-start strategy can be utilized.

On Sunday, seven hitters were bolded and focused upon as potential spot-starters for Monday. When I say spot-starter, I mean someone that you necessarily don't want to hang on to; they're simply someone to pick up off of free agency for just that one day because a good matchup presents itself, and you're looking forward to having as complete a lineup as possible.

On Monday, those seven hitters mentioned combined for nine hits in 26 at-bats (.346 AVG), four runs, a home run, and seven RBI. Even more surprising? The average ranking of these players is currently 534.

That means 533 players have better numbers so far on the season. Besides Casey Kotchman's 0-4 performance, every hitter mentioned had at least a hit, and five of the seven mentioned drove in at least one run.

And how about Barry Zito? Mentioned as a possible "sleeper," Zito responded with seven shutout innings and the win. Mind you, coming into the game, Zito was 6-15 with a 5.73 ERA. If anyone actually played the contrarian and picked him up, congratulations, as you had even bigger cojones than I!

Now, with Thursday right around the corner, I only hope I can come close to replicating Monday:

The day starts off in Cleveland at 12:05 EDT, when Zach Greinke takes on Cliff Lee. Greinke started off the season 3-0 with an ERA of just 0.75. Now, with the season beginning to wind down, Lee almost has it locked up with a 2.34 ERA on top of a 17-2 record. Anyone think the southpaw might be slightly worn out after last week's complete-game victory over the best team in baseball? Counter with C John Buck and 1B/OF Mark Teahen, who are hitting a combined .352 with five HR and 13 RBI in just 54 AB against the potential 2008 AL Cy Young award winner.

A day game at Wrigley Field—one of my favorite parks in baseball—has Josh Fogg challenging Carlos Zambrano. Boasting a 7.71 ERA, Fogg has been in a slump all season. Zambrano has nearly mirrored him in his past two starts. Cubs fans will be watching closely, but look for the extra day of rest to help and for Zambrano to pick up lucky No. 13. If history is any guide, Fogg will be pitching batting practice to OF Jim Edmonds—.429 BA in 21 AB, with two HR and six RBI.

Jorge De La Rosa vs. Derek Lowe and the newly revitalized Los Angeles Dodgers. Jorge has his hands full against the Dodgers. Not only is his ERA an unacceptable 7.32 on the road, he's also accumulated five of his six losses away from Coors Field this season. If you're looking for No. 7, like I am, look to one of the newly-acquired Dodgers, 1B/3B/OF Casey Blake, to contribute. With the three guys ahead of him collectively hitting .300 on the season, look for ample RBI opportunities. His 4-12 experience against De La Rosa should pay dividends and propel Derek Lowe to his 10th victory.

Josh Johnson is a young lefty that has proven he's the real deal, having beaten divisional rivals, the Mets twice and the Phillies once, in three of his past four starts. The Giants' offense isn't comparable, so look for Florida's hunt to earn a playoff berth in the crowded NL East to continue with another win. They'll be facing Matt Palmer, a 29-year-old career minor leaguer making just his second start. His first start last week ended on short notice after he gave up six ER in just two-and-one-third innings against Atlanta. To make a long story short, Florida has a bit of a better offense then Atlanta!

The evening starts off in Philly at 7:05 EDT, as the worst team in baseball will pencil in Tim Redding. Look for OF Geoff Jenkins to rest one of Philly's outfielders, as he is 12-21 against Redding with a HR and two RBI. Pitching for the home team, 45-year-old Jamie Moyer will be making his 577th career start. Counter Moyer with C Jesus Flores and OF Austin Kearns, who are a combined 11-24 with a HR and five RBI off the veteran lefty.

There's a Yankee starter that is allowing batters to hit .293 off of him this season? Yes, Sidney Ponson will somehow look to keep his ERA at 4.19 as a Yankee. I don't know how he does it, but he continues to somehow win more games than he loses. Look for Cy-Young contender Roy Halladay to put a wrench in the Yankees' plans as he goes for his 15th win and ninth complete game of the season! Start OF Matt Stairs, who is 9-24 with four HR and seven RBI against the Yankees' Ponson.

The next matchup is between players who had their heyday back in 1999, when they went a combined 45-8! Mike Hampton vs. Pedro Martinez, both starters got the win their last time out. Given the Mets' playoff hunger, and the weak offense of the Braves, I'll side with Pedro and the Mets here for the victory.

Chad Reineke makes just his second career start for the San Diego Padres. He'll have his hands full against NL Cy Young contender Brandon Webb, who is likely to mow down the opposing teams' lineup. You can almost pencil in Webb for his 19th win already, well on his way to his first 20-win season.

What may have been a pitching duel earlier in the season may not be anymore, as both Scott Baker and John Lackey seem to be showing slight wear, heading down the stretch. Counter each with OF Garret Anderson, who is 4-11 with two RBI; and OF Delmon Young, the former first-overall pick of Tampa Bay, who is 3-6 with an RBI against the 10-2 Lackey.

Greg Smith looks like the best option off of the free-agent pitcher market. A victim of no run support, as evidenced by his 5-12 record, despite a 3.91 ERA. He'll be facing Ryan Rowland-Smith, who, in four career starts, has yet to get through six innings of work.

Well, there you have it. All players mentioned have been bolded. Hitters have been underlined, and pitchers that are available in a good bit of fantasy leagues have been italicized, all as potential options for spot-starts. And as always, Good luck down the stretch!

Shaun Copsey currently manages 7 fantasy baseball teams, 1 in 4th, 1 in 3rd, 2 in 2nd, and the final 3 in 1st.

Fantasy Baseball: Monday's Matchups

The day starts off in Pittsburgh at 12:35 EDT, as John Maine takes the mound for the NY Mets, facing off against Paul Maholm. The last time each pitcher faced the opposing team, they earned the win. This looks like a pitching duel on paper, and I won't argue against that until I'm proved wrong. If you're looking for a spot start at SS, try Jack Wilson; he has the most experience vs. John Maine, going three for 10.

Next up, the San Francisco Giants take on the Atlanta Braves at 4:35 EDT. Giants' SP Barry Zito may prove to be a sleeper, as only one player in the Braves' lineup has prior experience against him: 1B Casey Kotchman. The Braves' first baseman went one for three, and his only hit was a long shot that drove in two runs and contributed to Zito's loss, as the Giants fell 2-0. Taking the mound for the Braves is Jorge Campillo, despite having a 3.09 ERA this season, he's allowed five ER in each of his past two starts. Will it just be a bump in the road, or is Campillo beginning to show the wear and tear of being a full-time starting pitcher?

The evening starts off at 7:05 EDT when Boston's Jon Lester (11-4, 3.25 ERA) takes on Baltimore's Mark Guthrie (10-8, 3.18 ERA). Lester is 4-0 in his career against Baltimore. Guthrie easily counters with a 4-0 record in his past four starts, having only allowed one ER in each and sports a phenomenally low WHIP of .72! If you're looking for a spot start at catcher, consider Ramon Hernandez. Ramon is five for 14, with a HR, vs. Lester.

Jon Garland takes to the mound for the best team in baseball, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Garland is 5-1 in 10 GS against Tampa Bay. In his last outing against Tampa Bay, Garland threw eight shutout innings but earned a no-decision, due to his run support showing up one inning too late. Consider 1B/OF Eric Hinske for a spot start, as he is 12 for 35 with two HR and six RBI against JG. Opposing the LAA is Andy Sonnanstine, who might be a candidate to ride the bench Monday evening. Sonnanstine was tagged for eight hits and five ER in five innings pitched the last time out vs. the Angels. Consider OF Garrett Anderson for a spot start, as he is three for six with four RBI vs. the southpaw.

Detroit faces the Rangers in the Texas heat. Kenny Rogers takes on Seth Feldman, in what appears to be a likely slugfest. Seth Feldman was pummeled for 10 H and six ER the last start out vs. Boston, and he didn't even complete three innings. His counterpart, Kenny Rogers, was blasted the last time out vs. Texas for nine H and six ER, failing to complete four innings. Looking for a spot start at catcher? Consider Gerald Laird, who is an unthinkable nine for 15 against Rogers.

Two lefties face off in Milwaukee—Randy Wolf vs. CC Sabathia. Randy lasted four-and-one-third innings after throwing 105 pitches his last time out vs. Milwaukee. Even for compulsive gambles, Randy doesn't look like a good bet against CC Sabathia's Milwaukee Brewers. CC, since joining the NL, is 7-0 with four complete games. Expect the trend to continue in front of the home crowd Monday night vs. Houston.

Justin Duchscherer of the Oakland Athletics vs. Nick Blackburn of the Minnesota Twins. These are two of the better, young pitchers in the game. Both need to keep the ball inside the ballpark while scattering hits, and this could turn into a rare pitching duel.

The night caps off with two southpaws facing off in Chi-Town. In this case, the 5-12 Jarrod Washburn of the Seattle Mariners might be staring at his 13th loss against the high-powered White Sox offense on the road. Look for a spot start from 1B Paul Konerko. In turn, you'll get the experience of a .333 hitter in 48 at-bats, with four HR and 11 RBI against Washburn. SP Mark Buehrle looks to continue his hot streak after going seven innings and allowing only one ER in each of his past two starts. Facing off against the Seattle Mariners, I believe he's a no-brainer to pick up his 11th win of the season.

Don't believe "spot starts" work?

Shaun Copsey currently manages 7 fantasy baseball teams, 1 in 4th, 1 in 3rd, 1 in 2nd, and the final 4 in 1st.

Fantasy Baseball: Micromanaging Builds Champions

For many fantasy baseball managers, Monday is usually a day where you are unable to field a full lineup. Roughly half of baseball's teams take the day off. It's the one day of the week where you actually have a reason to bench a star like Albert Pujols in favor of someone who is playing.

As many leagues head down the stretch, you may find that you are in a tight head-to-head league, one missed move could cost you a playoff spot. For others, rotisserie leagues usually limit each position to 162 games played.

What happens this late in the year when you find your team with several games to spare at key positions? One way to close that gap is to find players who are playing on Mondays (and Thursdays).

I'm not saying to drop Albert Pujols in favor of Adam LaRoche simply because he's playing Monday. Something more realistic such as dropping the reliever who isn't getting you saves, the starter who isn't getting you wins, or the hitter who's been in a season-long slump. Even the latest player to get bit by the injury bug.

There are a number of players that are expendable, and, in turn, those that can deliver a nice punch off of the free-agent market.

As an example, I took advantage of a doubleheader last week between the Braves and Cubs. I wanted a Cubs player who was likely to play in both games. Who was the only regular member of the Cubs' lineup that was available in most leagues?

Jim Edmonds.

So I decided to give him a shot. I dropped then-struggling Detroit reliever Joel Zumaya in favor of the slugger. In retrospect, the move turned out to be an exceptional one. In just one day's work, Jim Edmonds went two for six, scored four times, had a home run, and batted in four runs.

This turned out to be a beneficial move to my team. The most important thing is that I didn't fall in love with Jim Edmonds on my fantasy baseball team. I quickly moved on in favor of other talent that was available.

Tony La Russa reminded us in 2006 that micromanaging works, as the St. Louis Cardinals proved they were the best team in Major League Baseball. I'm surprised more fantasy players aren't taking a page from La Russa's book of micromanaging and plugging in guys on Mondays. Even taking advantage of doubleheaders and pitching matchups.

Drafting the best team in March doesn't always mean your team will win in September. The team that wins the league usually has the manager that actively adapted throughout the season to injuries and player trends.

Be that manager and win your league. Good luck down the stretch!

Shaun Copsey currently manages 7 fantasy baseball teams, 1 in 4th, 1 in 3rd, 1 in 2nd, and the final 4 in 1st.

Fantasy Baseball: Five Hitters for the Stretch Run

C/1B Victor Martinez

"The Associated Press reports Cleveland Indians C Victor Martinez (elbow) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Akron Friday, Aug. 15." A career .299 hitter at catcher is hard to find. If for some odd reason Victor Martinez is a free agent still in your league, pick him up immediately.

C/3B/OF Brandon Inge

If you're looking for a backup catcher, third-baseman, or outfielder to plug into your lineup, Brandon Inge is your man, especially in deeper leagues, due to his flexibility. His best value is perhaps as a backup catcher on a fantasy team. He's shown flashes of coming around with his bat, going 5/19 with 1 HR and 4 RBI during the Tigers' last four games vs. the Toronto Blue Jays.

1B Adam LaRoche

Adam has a reputation of being "Mr. Second half." He's rejuvenated, healthy, and fresh off the DL. Adam will join his brother Andy and perhaps have extra motivation to perform down the stretch.

He's a free agent in many leagues and may be a valuable addition in deep leagues to fill in on off-days or platoon him with your current 1B, depending on pitching matchups.

1B/2B/3B Ty Wigginton

Ty is in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .436 with four HR and 11 RBI. Ty is someone flying under a lot of people's radars, but given a full and healthy season, he has shown 30 HR and 100 RBI potential. His three-position eligibility gives him added value down the stretch and into the playoffs.

2B/SS/OF Alexei Ramirez

Alexei just became eligible at SS. This has shot his value through the roof, due to the demand for a solid, everyday SS in fantasy leagues. If he's a free agent, pick him up immediately in your league.

He has proven to be a clutch performer already, expect the trend for this former Cuban Olympian to continue down the stretch, batting .305 with 11 HR and 9 SB. Those are solid numbers for anyone, especially at short.

New York Yankees' Playoff Hopes Are Quickly Vanishing

The last time the New York Yankees missed the playoffs? 1994. The excuse? The eighth work stoppage in baseball history, as the players walked out on Aug. 12 of that year. It really wasn't the Yankees fault, as manager Buck Showalter went on to win manager of the year. The Yankees finished with a 70-43 record in that strike-shortened year.

Fast-forward 14 years to 2008. Excuses are hard to come by, but injuries aren't. The first big name to fall was A-Rod. Alex Rodriguez, a normally reliable, everyday player watched as the high-profile New York team proceeded to go 6-11 in his absence.

After the May 20 return of A-Rod, the Yankees went 5-0 in games that Chien-Ming Wang started. That was until June 16, when it was announced that the Yankees' pitching ace had landed on the 60-day DL with a torn tendon and sprained right foot, injuries that may keep him out until next season.

As if the early-season injuries to the Yankees' aces on each side of the ball weren't enough, in steps career-Yankee, catcher Jorge Posada. An integral part of the last three Yankee World Championship teams. Out for the season with right shoulder surgery effective July 20.

Perhaps it was catching all those Yankee championship teams, or maybe it had something to do with all the Joe Torre pitching changes over the years?

As years go by, the championship teams of '98, '99, and 2000 grow older. Few players still remain from those teams. On the pitching side, arguably the best closer of all-time, Mariano Rivera, joins starter Andy Pettitte. Offensively, future hall of famer Derek Jeter joins the bruised Jorge Posada.

Back in their heydays, from 1998 to 2000, Andy Pettitte was never asked to be the No. 2 starter. Now, with the most recent injury to Joba Chamberlain, Pettitte has been thrust into a role he never had with the championship teams of yesteryear.

Derek Jeter, a career .315 hitter—and an even better hitter during the Yankees' prime years—hit .337 between '98 and 2000. In 1996, while helping the Yankees to a World Championship, he managed to earn Rookie of the Year honors.

For the 34-year old, 2008 has been a much different season. Jeter is on pace to have his worst season since becoming a full-time member of the pinstripes.

The Yankees? On pace to have their worst season during the Jeter, Posada, Rivera, and Pettitte era. For those four, it could be their first season in pinstripes where Yankee Stadium will be absent from October baseball.

Sign Mark Teixeira to Bring Back Orioles' Magic

The Baltimore Orioles have proved they can win this season on one-third the salary. They've been a thorn piercing into the highest payroll in baseball. This has been clear, seeing how they have won three out of four series versus the New York Yankees, with two still left to go.

With that said, you'd think the Orioles would be in the hunt for the playoffs, right? Wrong! Baltimore is still trying to end its streak of sub-.500 seasons. The last time Baltimore had a winning season was in 1997.

Ever since, not only has attendance at the stadium dropped off, but so has "Orioles' magic." The overall winning way that used to dominate in Baltimore, especially during the Earl Weaver era, is gone.

Even the Orioles' winning record against the New York Yankees this season can't seem to stop the inevitable slide into an 11th consecutive losing season. At least things are looking on the up and up—for the future anyway.

Team chemistry is building, manager Dave Trembley is motivating the team, and Peter Angelos is letting Andy MacPhail do his job. That being said, something still seems to be missing.

Two teams that have won multiple World Series Championships since the Orioles began this horrendous slide, fellow division foes Boston and New York, seem to have one thing in common. And that is a steady hand batting clean-up.

Whether it was All Star Bernie Williams for the Yankees or silver slugger David Ortiz for the Boston Red Sox, each team has had a solid clean-up hitter. Each team has had a hitter with a reputation of being a clutch performer and a hitter who was going to give you a season batting over .300 while driving in over 100 runs.

This is exactly what Mark Teixeira would bring to the Orioles as he enters the prime of his career. Mark, who was born in Annapolis and is a reported native of Severna Park, Maryland, is a hometown favorite and he doesn't even know it. There is already a "Bring Mark Home" petition floating around on the web which has hundreds of signatures.

The cheers couldn't be any louder for the first baseman who is currently in the midst of being the icing on the cake for a potential 2008 World Champion team in Los Angeles. Perhaps for Mark this season, he'll get his first wish, a World Series ring.

For Mark's hometown fans, perhaps they'll get their wish shortly thereafter—a 2009 contract that extends well into Mark's career and possibly even retirement. For Mark, perhaps a wish and a dream could be fulfilled days apart...

Brandon Inge: The Most Under-Rated Catcher in Baseball

How hard is it to get playing time when the positions you play are filled with players such as:

2-time silver slugger award winner Miguel Cabrera

All-star Carlos Guillen - Is it true that Leyland thinks he's the team's MVP?

Magglio Ordonez - led the league with a .363 BA in 2007.

For Brandon Inge, getting playing time this season used to be due to starters getting a rest or combating brief injuries to fellow Detroit Tigers. Brandon Inge is a rare breed in Major League Baseball. Inge can successfully play third-base, catcher, and all three outfield positions.

Brandon Inge, who's in his eighth season with the club, is not used to being used as a utility player. Inge became a utility player by default with the acquisition of Miguel Cabrera. Before the deal that brought Cabrera to Detroit, the outfield in place was already stacked with high-priced sluggers, and veteran Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez already instilled as the every-day catcher.

Well, playing time just got a bit easier for the 31-year-old in his eighth season with the Tigers. The 14-time All-Star known as "Pudge" will be wearing New York Yankee pinstripes.

And besides, between playing third-base, catcher, and the outfield this season, Inge has a flawless fielding percentage with no errors! How many other people in baseball can say the same? The answer, none!

Even though Inge has a career .240 batting average, he's shown flashes in his career as a run producer. In 2006, Inge belted out 27 home runs. This potential, on top of near flawless defense as a catcher, puts Inge instantly into the echelon with other top catchers in the league.

How great is it to have the kind of flexibility that Brandon Inge brings to your baseball team? Apparently Jim Leyland and the Tigers management realized this and have decided to get the guy everyday playing time behind the plate. In turn, Inge has allowed the Tigers to upgrade their bullpen with the addition of Kyle Farnsworth.

I give those involved in this deal two-thumbs up for moving a high-priced contract of Ivan Rodriguez over to the Yankees to give a blue-collar player like Brandon Inge a chance behind the plate.

If you have a fantasy baseball team and are in need of a catcher, you might want to copycat the bold move that was just orchestrated by the Detroit Tigers and make Brandon Inge your starting catcher. If not your starter, then maybe as a backup, not only at catcher, but third-base and the outfield as well.

Besides, look at the rest of the Tigers lineup. Inge won't have pressure on him to belt out 30 homers and hit .300. He'll likely be batting ninth behind the Latino Olympic team, I mean Detroit Tigers!

Fantasy Baseball: Need Saves?

Looking for the next Mariano Rivera? Well tough luck, he's nowhere to be found. I can tell you though as the trade deadline approaches that you won't need to trade away talent just to pick up a closer or two.

In fact, there are save opportunities available in just about every fantasy baseball league out in the universe right this moment.

One was created when the forgotten Pittsburgh Pirates decided that they weren't a major league contender but more or less a minor league affiliate of the New York Yankees. After Damaso Marte filled in for Matt Capps and showed that he was arguably the best pitcher on the club, he was quickly sent towards the concrete paradise known as New York.

The second was created by the off-and-on struggles of an aging Todd Jones in Detroit. At age 40, only four people in the AL are older. Perhaps it's just time for Todd Jones to hang up his cleats and retire as 14th all-time in saves at 319.

So who are these unknown players available currently in nearly 100% of fantasy baseball leagues at the moment? None other than Fernando Rodney & Tyler Yates. You're probably wondering where these guys came from, well so am I!

Fernando Rodney is probably the best bet of the two. He's playing for a team that was actually the favorite to win the AL Central, and has the ability to put up some runs. Ironically, his first appearance this year came on June 16th in an interleague game against the San Francisco Giants, where he actually was charged with a blown save after three earned runs in just ⅓ of an inning pitched. Now just over a month later, he's suddenly been named the closer per manager Jim Leyland.

Tyler Yates recorded his first save of the season just minutes ago. Give the guy credit, he came on in a pressure situation and quickly elimated any butterflies he had in his stomach by striking out Willy Taveras. 11 pitches and two groundouts later, and Yates recorded his first save of the season. He successfully knocked out the top third of the Colorado Rockies order like he's been doing it for years.

Now it's time for you fantasy baseballers out their to act like you've been playing the game for years and to add these two sleepers to your bullpens.

The author of this article manages seven fantasy baseball teams currently with four in 1st, two in 2nd, and one in 4th.

Dennis "Wildman" Sarfate To Make His First Major-League Start

An unexpected pitching duel is building in the Bronx for Wed. July 30, 2008. A Queens, NY native gets to live his dream and start in Yankee stadium, except for one thing: He'll be pitching for the opposing team!

"He's in the starting rotation," Baltimore Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "We'd like to see what he can do."

Dennis Sarfate will be facing another ex-reliever turned starter when he takes the mound for his first major league start, Joba Chamberlain.

"We've got to try something," Trembley said. Perhaps, in the back of his head, he was trying to figure out how to beat someone who has drawn comparisons to Roger Clemens?

"It's going to be fun," Sarfate said.

The Good:

The Queens, NY kid has some nasty stuff that will send even the best of hitters in baseball weeping back to the dugout. 77 K's in 66-⅔ career innings.

Hitters are only batting .208 off the guy!

The Bad:

He's gave 39 free passes out in just 50 innings pitched so far this season.

His average length of appearance is one inning so far in the bigs. Does he even have the ability to go five innings in a major-league game?

The bottom line, Dennis: You need to go out and have confidence in your stuff and let it ride. Trust the seven guys you have playing behind you to get you the three outs you need every inning.

You have no pitches to waste. If you can get through five innings, consider it a big accomplishment vs. one of the most reputable teams in baseball.

It's your first start and you're facing the second coming of Roger Clemens. It's time to go right at the Yankees and show manager Dave Trembley, the Baltimore Orioles, and the fans that you want to be around in 2010, when the team is competing for the World Series Championship!
