New Orleans Saints: Is Robert Meachem the Real Deal or a Draft Bust?

Robert Meachem was the only 2007 first round draft pick not to see any playing time last season. He was regarded as one of the top wide receivers in the draft, and the Saints took him late in the first round hoping he could make an immediate impact.

Things did not turn out as planned, and Meachem was inactive for all 16 games last year. His troubles started when he showed up to training camp overweight and out of shape. Meachem ended up aggravating an old knee injury that kept him off the practice field and later on required surgery.

Even after the surgery Meachem was running around with a noticeable limp and seemed to have lost a step in the speed department. His route running also suffered, as his repaired knee did not allow him to make fast cuts in his routes; at least that was the excuse given by Coach Payton on why Meachem never made it out on the field last year.

In 2008 Meachem has already received plenty of praise almost every day from people around him at training camp. In preseason action Meachem caught 10 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown, but when the Saints hosted the Buccaneers Sunday in the home opener, Meachem was listed as inactive.

What is the real story here?

The Saints have great depth at the wide receiver spot. Why though, is a first rounder that is not injured and showed great potential in preseason not at least dressing for the game?

If it were not for the injury suffered by Saints' No. 1 receiver Marques Colston that will keep him out for a minimum of four weeks Meachem would have been inactive for week two as well.

Give me your thoughts on what you think was keeping Meachem from breaking into the lineup before Colston's injury.

Also, give me your thoughts on how the absence of Colston will or will not affect the strength and explosiveness of the Saints' offense.

Attention Coach Payton "Paging" Robert Meachem, The Saints Finally Need You

If you have not already heard, Marques Colston had surgery on his hand to repair a torn ligament he suffered on Sunday against Tampa Bay. Colston over the last two seasons emerged as Drew Brees' favorite target, compiling 2,241 yards receiving and 19 touchdowns after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2006 draft.

Colston was the surprise steal from 2006, and has quickly climbed the ranks to becoming one of the NFL top receivers. Having been snubbed from the Pro Bowl the last two years, Colston was a favorite to make it in year three.

The injury will surly hurt his chances for a Pro-Bowl, but six weeks out should allow him to come back and contribute later on in the season, so all is not lost.

That brings to question, will Robert Meachem, the Saints first round pick from 2007 finally dress for a game? I am going to say yes. This Sunday against the Redskins will be Meachem's NFL debut in a uniform (with pads).

Meachem was basically red shirted his rookie season, by a knee injury, but showed great promise this summer in training camp and in preseason. To everyone's surprise when the Saints took the field last Sunday in the season opener, Meachem was once again donning a Gold colored Saints t-shirt, passing around water.

By all accounts, Meachem may not even play a down, but getting to finally suit up will be a step in the right direction. Meachem was praised by everyone for taking the initiative, and asking veteran teammate David Patten if he could train with him at his home during the offseason.

Preseason was good to Meachem, he played well, and showed drastic improvement from a year ago. I hate to see Colston out for maybe six weeks,. He is the Saints go to guy and key to the offenses success.

I am sure that Meachem is taking the news with mixed emotions knowing he may finally get his chance to play in the NFL.

Saints Fans, It's Only Week One—Keep the Champagne on Ice for Now

I am finally coming down from my high after the Saints' victory in their season opener on Sunday. It was a little too close for comfort, but a big win it was.

Now it's time to concentrate on the Washington Redskins for week two. The Redskins, much like the Saints, have been hit and miss the past two years, week in and week out.

They have some great talent on both sides of the ball. Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts make for one of the best running back tandems in the NFL today. Then you have Santana Moss along with Antwaan Randle El and tight end Chris Cooley who are sure to offer a challenge to an improving but not yet established Saints defense coming off that big win against the Bucs.

This Sunday will be definitely be a bigger test, with more high profile players at all the skill positions lining up opposite the Saints this Sunday. The Saints will not only have to stop the pass, but also the run.

Tackling was an issue last week, and Tampa Bay was able to take advantage and set up good field position on some long runs by Ernest Graham. The defense cannot afford to let Portis get a jump, or he will make them pay. Portis is a much bigger threat up the middle and outside.

Jason Campbell is a big threat as well, passing the ball if you give him time, so pressure from the Saints front four will be vital. Mike McKenzie should be back on the field, and will provide good coverage, so I see the Redskins picking on rookie cornerback Tracy Porter the whole game.

Porter had a good NFL debut last week and held his own the during game against the Saints' nemesis Joey Galoway, who has been a thorn in the Saints' side for years, torching the defense each time they have played over the last three years.

I predicted before the season (and I feel the same way now) that rookie Tracy Porter is going to be a great player this year and for years to come. Top rookie defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis did not have the stats in week one, but was still very disruptive, and did exactly what the Saints drafted him for.

He collapsed the pocket on more than one occasion, and forced Tampa Bays' Garcia out of the pocket, into the waiting arms of defensive ends Charles Grant and Bobby McCray for two sacks. Jonathan Vilma came into his own after the second half last week, and showed good leadership on the field. Fujita and Shanle also played great.

It’s too early to anoint them "Dome Patrol II,” and we may never, but the linebackers are going to have a big year in my opinion. The offense just needs to find its rhythm this week. They showed signs of greatness, but also faltered at times.

Not committing penalties and sustaining long drives should be the focus giving the defense as much rest as they can get to stay fresh, or Clinton Portis will wear them down as the game goes on. Special teams play also needs to improve. Bush and Moore need more room to make plays on punt returns, giving the offense better field position to start with.

That did not happen last week against the Buccaneers. As a Saints fan, I am going to take it one week at a time, and not jump the gun just yet, and go book my trip to Tampa for the Super Bowl.

I will give credit when credit is due, but stay humble as the season goes on.

Did Someone Lose A Good Defense? I Think The Saints May Have Found It!

I am devoting this entire article to the New Orleans Saints defense. Yesterday's game was definitely too close for comfort, but the Saints held on to seal the deal in the closing seconds of the game.

My hat goes off to Coach Payton, and Gary Gibbs for the defensive overhaul this offseason. It showed yesterday, with a unit that can change so much from last year in only the first game of the season.

Let's look a the negatives from yesterday's game. Tackling was not the best we have seen, and most of the yards gained by Tampa came from missed tackles at the line of scrimmage. Had those tackles been made, Tampa would have only had half the yards they finished with.

The defensive adjustments need to improve also. Every time Jeff Garcia saw something in the Saints defense he checked off, and was able to complete a good play for a first down. The Saints need to make faster adjustments, and read the play better.

The Saints have only one way to go this year, and that is up. They have started the climb, and they did it without veteran corner back Mike McKenzie. Both Randall Gay, and rookie Tracy Porter held their own, and did not allow any big plays on either side of the field.

Porter was most impressive, breaking up two passes from Garcia. One in the endzone, and another on third and long that stalled the Tampa drive, setting up the scoring drive capped off by Reggie Bush to put the Saints ahead for good.

Rookie CB Porter was sure to get picked on by the Buccaneers offense, but denied them any room to make plays on his side of the field.

Jonathan Vilma, and Scott Fujita lead the team in tackles both with seven, along with Fujita adding an interception to seal the win. Both Vilma and Fujita played well, and were allowed to roam free for the most part due to the outstanding play of the front four.

The Saints had pressure on Garcia the whole day, sacking him twice and forcing him from the pocket numerous times. The most impressive part of the pressure was that it came without blitzing. Grant, Ellis, Smith, and McCray provided the push needed without the help of sending a fifth guy in.

I am very pleased at how different the Saints defense looked yesterday. Defenses only get better with time, and the Saints are going in the right direction.

Did Sean Payton Trade His Soul to the Devil for a Super Bowl Win In 2008?

As the story goes, Robert Johnson, one of the 20th century's most influential musicians, on a dark and stormy night in the middle of crossroads some were in Mississippi sold his soul to the devil for musical talent.

Robert Johnson never denied the report, and so the story has been passed around, with many believing it to be true.

The New Orleans Saints, for a third straight year, held training camp at Millsaps College—only 170 miles south of the supposed spot were Robert Johnson met the devil at those famous crossroads.

This year there were reports that Sean Payton left Millsaps College late one night, returning only an hour before the morning practice was suppose to start. An anonymous source says he would not say were he had been, and that he got lost in the back roads trying to find his way back to the college.

Did Payton, after hearing the story of Robert Johnson, go to meet the Devil and trade his soul for a Super Bowl victory in 2008?

Only time will tell, or will it? Payton, in 2006, was named "Coach of the Year" falling one win short of the Saints first ever Super Bowl appearance. In 2007 the Saints were favored to win it all and failed miserably, finishing the season 7-9.

One would think that he does not want to have another disappointing season, and to also be the first coach to ever bring home a Super Bowl Trophy to the "Big Easy." His name would forever be set in stone, and his legacy would last for eternity.

You never know what men will do or the price they will pay to obtain what they desire most. For the majority, selling your soul to the devil is merely a folk story passed down thru the generations, but for a few, they believe that if you do stand in the middle of the cross roads somewere in Mississippi and call for the Devil, he is willing to give you your pleasure for the price of your soul.

New Orleans Saints' Offense Issues a Challenge: Catch Me if You Can!

The New Orleans Saints enter Sundays game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers not knowing if their defense has improved from their dismal performance in 2007, but it will take only 60 minutes to tell Coach Payton, the NFL, and Saints fans everywhere the answer.

On paper, the Saints have improved in every area but one, the secondary. No one has stepped up and taken the CB2 starting position. Mike McKenzie, returning from a season-ending knee injury in 2007, quietly showed that he is ready this preseason, and he let every defensive coordinator know not to throw his way!

The other cornerback job is still up for grabs, and a regular-season audition will continue to take place. Randall Gay, the Saints' free agent pick-up from the Patriots this offseason looks to have the first audition on Sunday.

He has shown the same flaws that Jason David has, by allowing long completions in all of his preseason appearances, but he has the most experience with talent at this point. Rookie Tracy Porter has been good but still has a lot of learning to do.

So, until the Saints, defense proves it can stop teams from scoring at will, the Saints' offense has issued a challenge to every team it will face in 2008: Catch me if you can.

Coach Payton has to feel confident that his offense, with playmakers such as Drew Brees, Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey, and the "Four Horseman"—Deuce, Bush, Stecker, and Thomas—will score each time they touch the ball.

In fact, they will have to. Unless the defense shows that they are new and improved, the offense will have to win games by way of clock management and scoring every time they have the ball.

The one weakness the Saints' offense has is the run blocking of the offensive line. Those big guys are going to have to get better at opening holes, not just protecting Drew Brees.

I have stated before how I feel the addition of Shockey will benefit both Marques Colston and Reggie Bush. Shockey will take away the double teams Colston has been burdened with the last two years, and Shockeys' run blocking will allow Bush to get to the open field on the outside, were he is best.

The regular season is upon us, and Saints fans everywhere will be watching and waiting for the—New Orleans Saints to Come Marching in—this Sunday at the Superdome.

New Orleans Saints Get Their First Win of the Season!

Before they have even played their first game, the New Orleans Saints and the city of New Orleans have already won.

Hurricane Gustav forced the New Orleans Saints to prepare for their first regular season game 1000 miles a way, in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium. The emergency plan was put in place, as Hurricane Gustav threatened to hit the Gulf Coast only days after the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina three years ago, that still has a city rebuilding.

This time around the Gulf Coast and team were ready. The Saints left well in advance and the city of New Orleans, with some two million residents, was evacuated in time for the land fall of Hurricane Gustav.

Tensions were high and the questions were already being asked. Would the levee's hold up? Would we see the same devastation that Katrina brought to the Gulf Coast? How would this affect the New Orleans Saints 2008 season?

Hurricane Gustav has come and gone. The Levee's did hold. The damage at first glance is no where in comparison to what Katrina left in her path, and yes, the Saints will be playing their season opener against division rivals the Buccaneers in the Super Dome this Sunday.

The Super Dome has been the pride of New Orleans for many years. It has been the Saints' home since 1975. It also played an integral part providing shelter for those in need during Hurricane Katrina.

So it would be only fitting that only after a few days since the first hurricane hit New Orleans since 2005 that the city of New Orleans showed its strength, and resolve, and will be ready to host the Saints this Sunday.

Here's to hoping that 2008 will be the year that the New Orleans Saints bring home a Super Bowl victory to a city that has persevered through hardship for so long.

Jeremy Shockey, Down in the Bayou

I almost still cannot believe the Saints' were able to acquire Jeremy Shockey this offseason. Even after all the whispers and rumors that the New Orleans Saints' were trying to get Shockey before this years draft; the Giants were adamant that he was not for sale.

The day finally came, and it was announced that Jeremy Shockey was traded to the Saints.

Most would say that the Saints' did not need another big-name playmaker on offense, and that the defense is what needed to be addressed. If you look at all the moves the Saints made this offseason, they concentrated on defense.

First, obtaining Jonathan Vilma via trade with the New York Jets. Then Sedrick Ellis and Tracy Porter through the draft, and Bobby McCray, Aaron Glenn, and Randall Gay through free agency.

The Saints', on paper, made some great moves to shore-up one of the worst defenses in the league from last year.

So why bring in a loudmouth, problem-child like Shockey to a class-act team like the Saints? Especially when they already have one of the best offenses in the NFL today?

The answer is simple: He will make them better. The Saints, with all their offensive weapons, have lacked a threat down the middle of the field. The Saints had to use different tight ends for running and passing situations last year.

Shockey gives them run support and a passing threat. Teams will not easily guess the play with Shockey in the game, much like they did last year.

With four Pro Bowls under his belt, he is a big threat, with speed that will keep defensive coordiantors wondering how to contain him. Linebackers cannot keep up with him, and cornerbacks cannot match his size.

These mismatches and possible double-teams will free up guys like Colston and Bush. This makes Coach Payton's playbook never ending.

I, personally, am not sold on that fact that he is a problem child. I think he was a just product of the outstanding, first-class media in New York. Yes, he has said some off-color comments and has not always been on his best behavior, but who really ever is.

I believe he is just a passionate player that hates to lose, and he expects 100 percent from himself and the guys around him.

Coach Payton knows Shockey and what he is capable of. The Saints are stacked with good-character guys in the locker room, and Shockey knows that some of the comments he has made before will not be tolerated in New Orleans. The Saints have a "Team First" philosophy, and they tend to keep each other in check.

We should expect great things from Shockey and the rest of the New Orleans Saints' offense in 2008.

Jonathan Vilma Is the New Sheriff in New Orleans

The New Orleans Saints, after a disappointing 2007 season, knew they had to do something to shore up the defensive side of the ball. The first priority was to find a leader for the defense.

The Saints' front office had a good example to go off of. They needed to find someone that fit the profile of the most prolific linebacking corps to date, the famous "Dome Patrol." They knew they could never find four guys, so they concentrated on one.

Fortunately, they did not have to look far, as Jonathan Vilma was their guy. Vilma was still rehabbing a knee injury, and the Jets were looking at trading him, since he did not fit in with the new 3-4 scheme Eric Mangini brought over when he became the new head coach of the Jets.

It only took a conditional draft pick to get Jonathan Vilma in a Black and Gold uniform.

Why did the Saints go after a hurt and still rehabbing player? Because Jonathan Vilma is a winner, from his college days as a Miami Hurricane, winning a national championship, to being selected the Defensive Rookie of the Year and making the Pro Bowl.

Vilma brings intensity, leadership, and passion to the game, with players that respect him across the league.

Since joining the Saints, his progress has been slow, but deliberate. Coach Payton knows what Vilma is capable of, and getting him out on the field to early could cause a set back.

Vilma made his first appearance last week against the Houston Texans. It was nothing spectacular, but it was a chance to knock the rust off since last playing over 10 months ago.

Vilma has some big shoes to fill. He has worn No. 51 since college. Saints fans, however know No. 51 by another name: Sam Mills. Mills played in five Pro Bowls with the Saints, and was one of the smallest men to ever play linebacker in the NFL. Even though he was small, he packed a big punch, and players knew when Sam Mills hit them.

Coaches, and especially Saints fans, are hoping Vilma can rekindle the flame that has all but faded since Sam Mills and the rest of the "Dome Patrol" departed the Superdome.

I, for one, am excited and looking forward to seeing Jonathan Vilma lead the Saints' defense in 2008. I know he will, without a doubt, push the others around him to rise up and give cause to what once was a respected and revered defensive unit that no team liked playing against.

A personal note to Jonathan Vilma:

I would be lying if I said we the fans are not expecting you to perform miracles. We are expecting a lot from you this year. We expect to see you patrol the field and strike fear into anyone that lines up across you. We expect to see you leading a defense that was one of the worst in the league last year and make them better and to lead by example.

New Orleans Saints' Wide-Receiver Battle Is Heating Up

It seems as if Devery Henderson is not going to give up so easily. Early training-camp reports had Robert Meachem as the guy to watch and possibly have a chance at taking the No. 2 wideout spot. After a great first preseason game, those reports seemed to be right on track.

As of this last week, Henderson has been taking the bulk of snaps with the first team, along with Colston, and Coach Payton stated that Henderson is fighting for playing time, while the others— Moore and Meachem—are fighting for snaps.

He also said that Meachem has improved, but still has a ways to go, noting that it's his efficiency level that is still in question.

Wow, talk about a letdown. I cannot believe that with all the work Meachem put in this offseason, and the performance he gave in the first game, he would have slid down in the depth chart. Has Henderson, even after battling with a hamstring injury earlier in camp, improved that much?

You can bet the last two games are going to be important to those receivers and mistakes will be costly. On the defensive side of the ball, first-year guy Orien Harris is taking advantage of injuries and using the extra playing time to open the eyes of the coaches. He has recorded 11 tackles and one sack so far and looks to have a roster spot secured.

Having a guy that was just a camp body step up at a time like this is actually quite important for the Saints. Injuries have hit them hard in the trenches, with Hollis Thomas out for at least two months, and Brian Young's lingering knee/foot injury bothering him so far in camp.

Let me know your thoughts on the WR battle.

New Orleans Saints Have Questions That Need Answers

The Saints third preseason game is this Saturday, against the Cincinnati Bengals. This should be a good test for the Saints, since Carson Palmer is one of the top QBs in the NFL today.

The Bengals will, however, be without Chad Johnson, and Houshmandzadeh may be limited as well. This is good and bad for the Saints' secondary. Johnson and Houshmandzadeh are two of the best in the game today; they could have provided a great benchmark for the Saints' coaches to gauge the improvement of the secondary.

On the other hand with Johnson out, and Houshmandzadeh limited, if the secondary performs poorly against the second-team receivers, that will not be good for players, coaches, and fans alike.

Somebody needs to step up and show that they want the starting job. It's a stretch, but Porter just might be that guy, even though he is a rookie and has missed practice time due to injury.

Going into Saturday's game, the secondary is not the only issue to worry about. The linebacking corps has to show improvement as well. Jonathan Vilma got his feet wet last week and should show more of what he can do this week.

He will be limited, but I will be expecting to see more of the leadership qualities come out. Can he motivate the others to play at a higher level?

The defensive front four also has to make some changes in their game and provide more pressure up front. I will be looking for at least two sacks on Carson Palmer and a handful of hurries to prove that they are getting better.

Orien Harris has really stood out so far and is second in tackles with 10 solos and a sack. This is good news, since Hollis Thomas is out a minimum of two months with a torn triceps muscle. I also expect to see some plays from first-round pick Sedrick Ellis. He, in my eyes, has not stepped up and proven he is a force that can make plays.

I want to see some more blitz packages and cover schemes from Gary Gibbs. He does not have to show everything, but he needs to mix it up and get the defense going.

As far as the offense is concerned, I don't want to see anyone get hurt. We know what they can do and only small improvements with timing and execution are needed.

Jeremy Shockey is supposed to make his first appearance this weekend. Jeremy does not need to show off, make a few catches, and be happy. His time will come in two weeks.

The offensive line needs to get more push up front and open the run game up. We cannot afford to be one-dimensional. "Push guys, push!!"

I don't see much improvement coming from the running backs—what you see is what you get. With the offensive line making better holes, the guys in the backfield all have their special skill, and Coach Payton will use them accordingly.

Looking at the receivers, I am waiting for someone to step up as the No. 3 guy. Robert Meachem looked great in game one, but Lance Moore looked good in game two. David Patten is just making plays like he always does, so I expect him to be lining up opposite of Colston on Sept. 7.

Saturday's game will be the biggest test so far, and the Saints' defense is going to have to step up their game and show everyone they are a better unit than they were last year.

New Orleans Saints Fans Are Just Expressing Years of Frustration

Drew Brees is a leader both on and off the field. Last year, he was the first to come to Jason David’s defense when fans showed their disapproval over his play.

Like a true leader, Drew Brees told us we should encourage, not boo, him or other players because of their play. After Saturday’s poor defensive display and singled-out attacks by fans against Jason David, Drew Brees made a similar statement.

"C'mon people," Saints quarterback Drew Brees said. "We haven't even started playing games that count yet. It's extremely unfair. We're talking about the first quarter of our first preseason game at home. The bottom line is we all need to improve—offense, defense, and special teams. We shouldn't be hearing boos, especially at this time. We should be hearing encouragement."

How can I put this politely? Most fans do not make millions of dollars, but each year, we put our hearts and souls into a team that has been the most turbulent in NFL history.

To a true fan, every game counts. Last I checked, preseason tickets were not free.

Recently I just spent over $400 on front row, 50-yard line tickets for the Saints/Buccaneers game on Nov. 30. I had no problem paying that for a chance to see my beloved Saints.

On that note, if I want to boo, or if any other fan wants to boo, we have that right. Rest assured, we will be the first ones to stand up and clap when Jason David, or anyone else, makes a great play. But when we witness, for the millionth time, our supposed "Savoir of the Secondary" get burned again and again; well, preseason game or not, we will be upset.

As Saints fans, we are tired of losing. We want to win, and we want to win it all.

Now, let me elaborate on the comment I made about not making a million dollars.

When you make that kind of money to play a game, you have to be prepared for public criticism. That’s part of the game. If you make a lot of money, fans will expect you to play well. If you don’t play well, you will here it from the ones that matter most, the fans, who dish out money for tickets, jerseys, hot dogs, and beer.

Now, I respect Drew Brees for coming to Jason David’s defense; I would expect nothing less, but understand that the door swings both ways, and to reap the benefits of a multi-million-dollar contract, you cannot be surprised when fans get upset because their team, or a specific player, is not playing well.

So, to Drew Brees, and the rest of the New Orleans Saints: We love you. Please understand what you mean to the city of New Orleans. Right now, there is a lot of built-up frustration going around.

We will always be behind you all the way, win or lose, just as we have from the beginning.

New Orleans Saints' Are One Team with Two Separate Personalities

The Saints have always had one problem. They never have a good balance between their offense and defense.

In the early '90s, we had the famed "Dome Patrol" under Jim Mora. Those guys struck fear into every offense they played against. The problem was, they did not have an offense that could score. This lead to subpar seasons and the occasional playoff berth.

Present day, the New Orleans Saints have had one of the top ranked offenses in the league the last two years, but coupled with a defense that, at most times, seems non-existent. The defense has taken them from Super Bowl contenders to just another good football team.

I am sure every offensive coordinator that will face the Saints this year has already made their game plan and submitted it. Pass, pass, and pass, or something close to that.

On the other hand, any defensive coordinator that will face them this year will probably not get much sleep and will only hope that they make a good showing. The top question on their minds will be: Which do you focus on stopping: Bush, Colston, Shockey, or McAllister?

Some say having too many playmakers is not good, but Coach Payton will be sure to spread the wealth around to keep his guys happy.

Now, back to the defense.

Can someone please throw Gary Gibbs a bone? As a fan, it's frustrating to watch your offense dismantle teams, only to have your defense get to 3rd-and-long and give up a 30-yard pass. Then, on the next play, they give up a 50-yard touchdown pass, and there's not a soul close to the receiver.

How does this happen? How can you practice day after day against such a great offense and not become better. That defies the laws of probability in my mind.

I have been thinking long and hard about this for some time now. Overall, we have the right talent on the field. The Saints made some impressive moves this offseason, and there is no question that we have an equal amount of talent on the both sides of the ball.

That leaves only one question to be answered: How do you get the defense to show it's true potential?

In 2006, we almost made it to the Super Bowl. Only a few minor adjustments were needed to get us there in 2007, and we ended up going backwards.

So far, it's not looking good, and the defense has not shown any signs of improvement. Yes, it's early, and the cohesion that defensive units need has not fully developed, but there should be signs of change, and that is not the case.

As a lifelong Saints fan, I am ready to see a true balance in both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. I am tired of roller-coaster games, with only one side showing up to play.

I hope Coach Payton can work with Gary Gibbs and his assistants to get things going by the beginning of September.

New Orleans Saints fans are ready to bring a Super Bowl Championship home!

An Open Letter to New Orleans Saints' Coach, Sean Payton

Dear Coach Payton,

The only highlight Jason David has provided the Saints with came in the 2007 season opener against the Indianapolis Colts. I'm sure you remember when he returned a fumble for a touchdown, as it's the only good thing he's done since becoming a Saint.

This restricted free-agent pick up has got to be the worse acquisition in the last decade. I beg you to do something about it quickly, or the New Orleans Saints' fans will not be happy for much longer.

Last year, week after week, we watched wide receivers score at will on the right side of the field. Jason David was made to look as if he had never played a game of football in his life.

Your staff, however, stayed with him, allowing David an opportunity to redeem himself.

Granted, we cannot blame every defensive problem on Jason David, but we can say with confidence that he has done nothing to remedy these problems. It is absolutely fair to put most of the blame on him, as so many touchdowns came on plays that he failed miserably to defend. On most plays, David was not even within five yards of the receiver.

On Saturday, against the Texans, he was again a lost puppy. David allowed far too many passes to be caught in his area.

Saints fans in the Superdome showered the arena with boos after David allowed a touchdown and two, crucial third-down conversions.

Coach Payton, please put this guy out of his misery. Put Saints' fans out of their misery, and let's move on.

Between Aaron Glen, Tracy Porter, Randall Gay, and Usama Young, there has to be someone better.

Porter and Young need more repetitions, but releasing Jason David will allow them and the others to gain adequate experience.

There are options, Coach Payton. Please make this defense better and explore them.

Sincerely Yours,
Robert Lewis

Hollis “The Tank” Thomas Out for Two Months, All Eyes Move to Sedrick Ellis

With Thomas out for at least two months, the Saints will be looking to their 2008 first-round pick Sedrick Ellis to have even a bigger impact than what was originally expected.

Thomas was to be used more in run situations, with Ellis coming in on passing downs. Now that Thomas is out, the pressure will be on Ellis to have an impact in both areas and will surely see more playing time.

The loss of Thomas is a big one. Scott Fujita has thrived as the Saints' leading tackler, with help from Thomas. Fujita has had the luxury of roaming free, due in part to the fact that Thomas does a great job of keeping those big offensive tackles and guards off of him.

Now, Ellis will have to earn the veterans' trust and show everyone he is up to the challenge. The defensive line has taken a beating in training camp so far, with Brian Young and Antwan Lake suffering from knee injuries and have been limited in practice. Ellis himself has had some soreness in his right ankle and also has been limited in practice.

If the Saints are to have any chance of improving from last years disappointing season, the defensive line is going to be a key component. Jonathan Vilma, whom the Saints traded for this offseason to help shore up the linebacking corps, will also suffer if the Saints' defensive front cannot protect them.

All eyes will be on the Saints' defense this year, and the focus will be on how well the big guys up front do. Creating pressure will be the key to a successful 2008 season.

Tony Romo or Drew Brees, Which Is the NFC's Best QB?

The AFC has Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Both are elite QBs that can lead their teams to victory. Both are Super Bowl MVPs and both will one day be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.

The NFC, however, has two great QBs, but it would be hard to place them in the elite column. Tony Romo and Drew Brees are great in the same respect: They both are the leaders behind two of the NFL’s most high-powered offenses. They both have their go-to guy—Romo and T.O., and Brees with Colston—but neither has made it to a Super Bowl.

Both Romo and Brees play the position with different styles. Romo is an ad-lib guy, and Brees uses a more strategic approach to the game. Brees is married and is more settled. Brees spends his offseason doing charity work and promoting his Drew Brees Foundation.

Romo is single and likes dating the next best thing. He does charity work, but more than often can be found doing red-carpet premiers.

Now, what a person does in his down time does not mean he will be better or worse at the sport he plays. It is just odd how they can be total opposites in personalities, but be two of the best QBs in the game today.

Brees entered the league in 2001 via the draft. Brees spent a year holding a clipboard, and then was given a chance to play, having a not so great start. But then in 2004, with Philip Rivers waiting to take over, had his best year ever. In 2006, Brees was brought in by New Orleans to be their franchise QB, even though he was still recovering from shoulder injury.

Romo was an undrafted free agent in 2003 for the Dallas Cowboys. He was the third-string QB and was almost lost in the shuffle when the Cowboys decided to bring in veteran Drew Bledsoe. He then spent three-and-a-half years waiting for his chance.

Both Romo and Brees have two Pro Bowl selections a piece, and they both benefit greatly from an outstanding supporting cast of running backs and wide receivers.

The one thing in common they both have is that Romo was with coach Payton in Dallas, and Brees now plays for the third-year head coach for New Orleans.

If you look at their 2007 stats, Romo had a Pro Bowl year, with 4,211-yards passing,

36 TD, 19 INT, and 97.4 passer rating. Brees finished the year with 4,423-yards passing, 28 TD, 18 INT, and 89.4 passer rating.

Romo clearly had a better year, statistically, but Dallas also had a better defense that allowed Romo to play with Dallas ahead most of the time. Brees played most games with a sense of urgency and needed to score because the Saints' defense was one of the worst in the league.

So, after pondering for a few minutes, weighing in all the evidence, and with much deliberation: Drew Brees gets the edge over Tony Romo as the best QB in the NFC.

Let me know what you think.

Where The Saints Look To Improve In Their Next Preseason Game

The New Orleans Saints showed that there is no question in how great their offense still is, and will become, in 2008. Even without Deuce, Shockey, and Colston playing last week, the Saints marched down the field for 80 yards and a touchdown on their opening drive.

The defense held their own, but still showed they are in need of improvement if they want to make a Super Bowl run this year. Vilma and McKenzie were missing last week, and it may be later in the month before they get onto the field. Even with the two high profile players out, the Saints defense will have to improve on unit cohesion, in the coming weeks.

A few things to look for when the Saints host the Texans this weekend will be if Meachem can duplicate his four catch, 129 yard, one TD game against the Cardinals. If he can, teams are going to be in trouble if they have to prepare for Colston, Shockey, Bush, Meachem and McAllister being on the field at the same time.

The battle is wide open still for the 2nd CB position; anyone can still make some plays and establish themselves as the weak side corner. Look for Usama Young, and second round draft pick Porter to step up their game.

Mark Simoneau is not going to give up his spot without a fight, but if Vilma is healthy he will not have a choice.

Most teams do not show a lot in preseason, but Gary Gibbs is going to have to show something if he wants teams to take notice of the newly overhauled defense. Or that may be his plan, to make teams think they are not better, and then surprise them come regular season.

Of course that last part is just wishful thinking.

Lito Sheppard Soon to Be a Saint?

Earlier this offseason, the Eagles brought in pro bowl free agent Asante Samuels, and Lito Sheppard wasn't shy about expressing his disapproval. There were rumors going around that Sheppard wanted a trade, but that the Eagles were asking too much and did not want to part ways with the corner back.

But on Tuesday, Sheppard made it clear he does not want to play the 2008 season as an Eagle. He blamed the front office for nitpicking certain aspects of his game that they say need improvement.

There were already talks that New Orleans would be interested in Sheppard, to help shore up the defensive back position that they have tried to address this offseason.

The Saints picked up Randall Gay and Aaron Glenn, and drafted Tracy Porter in the second round of this year's draft to address the issue. However, one would think that adding a two-time pro bowl cornerback with years left in the tank would be the smart thing to do, if only to add more depth and competition.

Sheppard has not had the best seasons lately, but that is often the trend in the NFL. Most of the greats had off years, and a change of scenery is all it took to return to pro bowl form.

Are The Stars Aligning For Saints RB Thomas?

Last year the Saints traded up to get Antonio Pittman in the fourth round. I remember watching last year’s preseason games, and saying to myself “That Thomas guy looks good, but he will probably not make the roster”, man was I wrong.

The Saints instead released Pittman, and kept the undrafted rookie from Illinois. The Saints back field was set with Deuce and Bush leading the way, and Thomas was limited to special team’s play, which he made the most of by scoring a TD off a blocked punt.

After Deuce went down suffering a season ending knee injury, Bush was promoted to full time starter. Bush was never able to establish himself and struggled as the starter. Bush also suffered a season ending injury, and Aaron Stecker was called up to action. That is when Thomas finally saw the light, and was given limited carries.

In the game against Arizona, Thomas suffered two fractured ribs, but Aaron Stecker was unable to go when the Saints met the Bears in the last game of the season due to a foot injury, and Coach Payton told the young RB, the Saints needed him to start against the Bears.

Most players would have not even dressed for a game with two broken ribs, but Thomas saw this as an opportunity, and seized it. In front of his hometown, Thomas had a record breaking game. He became only the second rookie in history to pile up 100 yards rushing (20 carries, 105 yards) and 100 yards receiving (12 catches, 121 yards) in the same game.

Now the NFL has seen its share of one hit wonders, but Thomas is not one of them. He has consistently proven himself as a legit player every time he has stepped onto the field.

So that brings me to my point. Have the stars aligned for Thomas?

Let’s look at the Saints current situation. Deuce has been looking great so far, but has still been limited. If he does play the Saints will want to limit him in fear of injury. Bush’s role in the Saints offense is still in question, and Stecker also has durability issues.

Coach Payton has made it known that they expect Thomas to see more carries this year. If he can duplicate last years breaking record performance or come close in a few games this year, Thomas will surely make his mark. We can only wait and see what the future has in store for the undrafted free agent from Illinois.

Take It To The Bank - The Saints Are The Best Team In The NFC

You Heard Right Dallas Fans; the best team in the NFC is the Saints.

I know what some of you are saying, but without a doubt the Saints are the team to beat in 2008.

Last year's predictions were simply a roll off of the success they had in 2006, but the pieces that were put in place to fix the holes in the defense did not pan out and injuries kept the playmakers off the field.

The loss of Deuce McCallister was like tying a boxer’s right hand behind his back. The big punch he brings was not there. Deuce wears teams down, and that did not happen after he went down.

This year is different, the defensive holes have been filled and teams will now have to worry about at least three major threats with Reggie Bush, Marques Colston, and now Jeremy Shockey going down the field. This will also open the run game and provide the lethal blow to opposing teams each week.

Just looking at the rest of the teams in the NFC, there are just to many questions left to be answered. 7 teams in the NFC have questions still at the QB position. Also there are the off the field issues that are plaguing some.

As far as Dallas is concerned, the only team that is close to being on the same talent level is the Saints. They will implode from within; they have a QB that can’t stay focused, and other playmakers that are focused more on individual accomplishments instead of just winning as a team.

A few points to make my case:

QB Drew Brees is the most accurate passer in the NFL, and giving him three playmakers to throw the ball to will be a sure thing.

Whoever lines up in the backfield for the Saints will benefit from the passing game and see a lot of open field to run in.

The offensive line is returning everyone except center Jeff Faine; they will once again allow Drew Brees to stay upright all year.

The defensive line is stacked and has enough quality backups to allow for plenty of rotation and rest, so when the fourth quarter comes around they will be able to maintain and hold teams a lot more.

The linebackers will benefit from the improvements in the D-line and will be able to chase and tackle without worrying about those big OL guys bearing down on them. Vilma is going to be the spark the LB core has been missing.

The CB and Safety positions are stacked as well. Each person will be playing harder than ever in fear that if a hint of 2007 pops up, Coach Payton will yank them in a heart beat.

Any questions?

Will the Real New Orleans Saints Please Stand Up!

Let's face it, 2007 was a fluke. The Saints were one win away from playing in their first Super Bowl ever in 2006. They were preseason favorites to take it all the way in 2007.

Then came the 0-4 start, and losing their prized running back Deuce McAllister did not help either. Then came the four-game winning streak, and everyone thought they were back from the dead. From that point on it was hit and miss. Missing the playoffs, and ending the season 7-9.

What happened?

First, it was the inconsistent play from Reggie Bush. Bush just could not give the Saints the edge in the running game, and Coach Payton was forced to go to the air.

Then you had the Saints defense not even showing up for games. You cannot expect to win football games by giving up (14) 20-plus-yard rushes and (54) 20-plus-yard completions.

This was clearly due to a defensive player being out of place, or just having the completely wrong defense called. I myself thought the defensive play calling was extremely bad last year.

As bad as the defense played last year, the Saints still had a chance to win. Drew Brees and the Saints offense still put up great numbers, Marques Colston had a pro bowl year, and had Bush not been hurt, the Saints may have made it to the playoffs. The season is over though, and the what if's are said and done.

The 2008 season is almost here, and even though there are still some big questions to be answered on both sides of the ball health wise, the Saints are ready to come marching in.

The Saints have a great balance of veteran and young players in all positions.

Drew Brees is one of the top five QBs in the NFL right now. Mark Brunell is a seasoned veteran, and will provide sound advice to both Brees and second year man Tyler Palko.

Reggie Bush has now got the "Hollywood" out of his system. He had a disappointing sophomore season, and has yet to produce like he did while at USC. This year he will be focused, and more patient. He is going into his third year, and knows that unless he starts to produce, he will not be seeing any contract extensions in his future.

Jeremy Shockey is a proven play-maker as long as he stays healthy. Along with his play he adds a dimension that the Saints have been lacking the last two seasons.

David Patten was said to have helped Meachem this offseason. Patten has not had a stellar career in 12 seasons, but he has been consistent, and holds three Super Bowl rings while with the Patriots. He definitely is qualified to lend some advice to a possible future star in Meachem.

What makes this such a great story is the fact that Meachem will be challenging Patten for the second wide receiver position. Patten is a stand up guy in my book.

Then you have pro bowl tackle Jammal Brown to mentor the young guys on the offensive line. Jahri Evans is already making waves going into his third year as a Saint. Back ups Jermon Bushrod and Carl Nicks will also benefit from the first string talent.

On the defensive side of the ball, you have young veterans in Smith and Grant. Smith just signed a huge contract extension, and Grant is in the second year of his huge pay day. Both did not have great years last season, but with rookie defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis finally coming on board, they will not want to be showed up by the young up and comer.

I did not loose any sleep with the Ellis holdout; defensive tackle is probably the easiest position to learn and with Smith, Grant, Thomas, Young, and McCray all there, Ellis will be able to pick their brains and should fit right in.

As for the linebackers, Fujita and Simoneau are the veterans, and the acquisition of Jonathan Vilma is sure to give them a spark.

The defensive backs have got the most balance in terms of years in the league, while the only standout in the group is Mike McKenzie. He is getting older with nine years in the league. Arron Glenn is the grandfather of the bunch, and with 14 years of experience, he is sure to bring a wealth of knowledge to the position. I am sure that is exactly what the front office had in mind when they signed him.

Harper is coming into form, and with some tweaking he is not far from being great. Others like Usama Young and rookie Tracy Porter will all benefit from the veteran guys.

I am also impressed by the addition to the coaching staff. Coach Orgeron is fierce, and his personality will rub off on everyone.

So yes, there are some reservations when it comes to saying the Saints have what it takes to have a repeat of the 2006 season, but I truly believe that 2007 was a fluke, and that the 2008 season will prove that the Saints are Super Bowl contenders.

Shaun Alexander Should Expect a Call from the New Orleans Saints...Soon

More than anything else this year, I want Deuce to play for New Orleans. He is the backbone of the Saints, and he's a leader on and off the field. Before Drew Brees and Reggie Bush came onto the scene, Deuce was the most recognizable name on the Saints' roster. He is a hometown guy, having played college at Ole Miss.

However, facts are facts: He has had two season-ending injury's over the last four years. He is now trying to come back from two surgeries over the last offseason. Now, it can be done, and the trainers have said his progress is doing great. However, we saw the other day that his knee started to swell.

There has to be a lot of talk going on right now about the chances of him being 100 percent in time for the season, or if he will even be ready at all. There are only a handful of decent running backs left in the free-agent pool.

After LaMont Jordon was picked up earlier this week by the Patriots, Shaun Alexander is the only one left that does not have off-field problems, and there's the fact that the Saints spoke to him a couple of months ago.

There also has to be a sense of urgency. If another running back goes down somewhere else, you can bet that Shaun will be picked up, leaving the Saints without an inside running game.

I am a big fan of Pierre Thomas (Baby Deuce). He showed promise last year, with a record performance against Chicago. However, he still lacks that "wear'em down" strength. In order for the Saints not to become one dimensional, they will need a between0-the-tackles runner.

Even with Colston, Shockey, and Bush catching passes, it won't be long before defenses will be able to stop them.

I only hope that Deuce is suffering only from those lingering effects of soreness, but in case it's worse, the Saints have got to be looking at who is available and can help them balance the running game.

Statistics Do Not Win Super Bowls!

In every sport, statistics are kept. They tell us who the best player is. They tell us which teams played better in a certain area. Players are inducted to the Hall of Fame based off the statistics they compiled throughout their career.

But does the better team on paper always win? Of course not.

Just ask anyone associated with the New England Patriots. Had statistics played a part in who won the Super Bowl, they would have won last year, and they would have had enough to get them a bye into the second round of the playoffs this year also.

That's what makes the game of football so great. You can have the perfect team, against the biggest under dog in history. And who prevails? The one with the biggest heart, not the one with the most touchdown receptions in a single season.

There are some great teams with great players, but each year only two get to play for the coveted Super Bowl.

Dan Marino will forever be one of the greats to have played the game, but he never won the big one.

As are many others that are now enshrined in the Hall of Fame, but yet do not have a Super Bowl ring. Should that take away from their legacy? Of course not. But I bet if you ask them, they will say there is a bit of regret having not won a ring.

So why is it, each year this time, we place so much on statistics?

Each year teams get ranked, best to worst, each player is ranked, predictions are made, and so on. But in the end, no one knows which two teams will be playing for, and which one will prevail, as the next Super Bowl Champions.

Not one expert had the Giants even making the playoffs last year there were even talks that Coach Coughlin would soon be shown the door, that Eli Manning would never be as good as his brother and did not posses the leadership skills needed in the NFL, and would Strahan be back?

The Giants lost to the Patriots in week 17 to give the Patriots a perfect regular season. But when it counted, the Giants, statistical underdogs in every column, slayed the giant, and went on to make history.

So with that, I would like to know your thoughts on why we put so much into statistics and before the season has even started, written off certain teams before a snap has been made.

The New Orleans Saints: The Right Ingredients For A Super Bowl Season

One of my life long friends is a chef, he went to culinary school, and now is very successful, having appeared on the Food Network, he spends all his time perfecting his craft. I asked him once what does it take to be one of the best?

His answer was quite simple, “The right ingredients and balance makes all the difference.”

He then proved it by making a ham sandwich. First using only bread, mayo, and some ham. It took only a minute to make. He then asked me to have a bite. Not surprising it tasted just like any other ham sandwich.

Now he said, "I will make you a real ham sandwich." It took over 15 minutes to make, and just the appearance and the set up, alone I was not sure if I wanted to eat it or take a picture. I then tried it, and it was the greatest ham sandwich I ever had.

You see he said, “The right ingredients and balance make all the difference.”

Now that I have made all of you hungry, I will get to the point of this article.

It got me thinking why some teams, year after year are successful, and why some are not.

The Saints wooed Jason David away from the Colt’s in 2007. It was felt that he could fix the left side CB issue. The mistake was that Jason David is better suited in a cover two scheme, not man to man. Jason is a very talented player if used in the right scheme, so don’t hate him for getting burned so much.

If there is a finger to be pointed, it should be at Gary Gibb’s.

1 Stick Butter:

It takes the right skill set to play man to man, and the Saints second round pick this year Tracy Porter has those skills needed. As long as he picks up on the schemes, I do not see why he will not be the CB2 starter when the Saints host conference rivals the Buccaneers on September 7.

1 Teaspoon Sugar:

To play middle linebacker in a 4-3 defense, you have to be athletic, Jonathan Vilma is that guy. He will be the missing link that the LB core has needed since Coach Payton took over in 2006.

Vilma suffered when the Jets changed defensive schemes, his skills were not used to their full potential, and I believe also lead to his injury. He will be completely healed, and ready to go in September.

4 Tablespoon Salt:

Smith, Grant, McCray, Ellis these guys will be a force to reckon with. Last year teams were double teaming Smith, and Grant, what was missing was a fleet footed rusher. In come McCray, and Ellis.

Sliding over Grant next to Ellis will make offensive lines adjust, creating one on ones with McCray and Smith. I expect to see allot more pressure put on the QB’s this year creating more turnover opportunities.

As far as the offense is concerned, the right ingredients have been there since 2006, it was the balance in which they are used that is in question, and with the addition of Jeremey Shockey, I feel everything will start to blend together nicely.

I am sure Coach Payton has already addressed this issue after watching the game film from 2007, and I think we may even see the formation of a new offensive scheme, not just the spread, that will be used by more teams, just as Bill Walsh’s West Coast offense did in the 80’s.

If there is anyone poised to do that it’s Coach Payton.

So we can only wait now, as the 2008 season nears to see if we have the right ingredients and balance to return to Super Bowl contender form. As for me right now, I think I’ll make me a ham sandwich.

Saints Defense Will Improve With Addition Of Pro Bowl Tight End Jeremy Shockey

I spent all of last night and this morning pondering the trade of Jeremy Shockey to the Saints. I for one, am ecstatic. I, like many wanted the trade to happen back during the draft, and when it did not, I was a bit upset.

But low and behold, Christmas has come early and Shockey is now a Saint.

Some say his attitude will be a distraction, I don’t think it will be. Shockey has great respect for the man that gave him his best year, and helped him become rookie of the year.

He plays with passion, and wears his emotions on his sleeve; some people take offense to that type of personality. I know this first hand.

Yes, some of his comments in the past may have been a bit harsh, and bad timing, but no one is perfect.

With the injury last year, I believe he is both humbled, and will also play with a chip on his shoulder.

I also know first hand, that a fresh start is sometimes needed. With Drew Brees' cool leadership style, a hard nosed edge in the huddle will provide a boost when the Saints need it the most.

I think he will work out fine.

So with that, let’s discuss how he will improve the Saints defense this year.

It’s not often that a offensive player can improve a defense, but Jeremy Shockey will be able to pull it off.

The Saints have had one of the best offensives the last 2 years, but there were times in 2007, that they were not able to sustain long drives, and became predictable. This left the defense with bad field position, and little rest in between series.

Shockey will make a defense scheme differently. Now not only do they have to worry about were Bush lines up, they have to worry about Shockey, and this in turn will free up Colston from double coverage.

The running game will also open up. This will equate to longer sustained drives, time off the clock, and more scoring. Just what a defense needs. Defense wins championships, just ask the Giants.

But a great offense can make a mediocre defense better also. The more time they have to rest, making a team go the length of the field to score, and having the cushion to give up a touchdown, will pay dividends in the end.

If you look back on the 2007 season, what would 10 extra points per game have done for their record? The Saints would have went 10-6 again, and who knows how the playoffs would have went?

The stories would have been about how the Saints pulled it out in the end, after a bad start.

Shockey is going to be the icing on the cake, to an already sweet offense, and we will see the Saints defense improve greatly in 2008.

New Orleans Saints Always Give their Fans Hope!!

The 2008 season is almost here, I thought it would be only fitting to talk about a common trait found in all Saints fans, hope; and to share a moment that makes me proud to wear the black and gold.

It was the 2006 NFC championship game, Saints vs. Bears, and I was like a kid on the first day of school. The night before I laid out my Reggie Bush No. 25 jersey and placed my Saints cap next to it, then drifted to sleep, with visions of Drew Brees connecting with Colston for the game winning touchdown that would send them to the Super Bowl for the first time in team history.

I had accepted an invitation to watch the game at a friend’s house, but this was not going to be your normal setting. I was going into the lions den. I would be the only one with Black and Gold on.

You see, my friend was a die hard Bears fan, and so would be the other five guys watching the game. Was I scared, you ask? In no way shape or form. I walked in with the same strut and swagger, of a father carrying his new born baby.

After a week of friendly trash talking, the time had come. Nothing was going to keep the Saints from going to the Super Bowl. It was destiny. After all the years we die hard Saints fans had been througt, it was finally our time.

Each play seemed to have the same feeling as a game winning touchdown, even if it was only for a three yard gain. When the Bears scored first, I did not hesitate to inform my friends that their lead would be short lived.

Then without warning, the left side swing pass to Bush, and it was off to the races. I jumped up, did my own touchdown dance, and commenced with the “I told you so.” It had begun; the Saints were going to march through a snowy Soldier Field, en route to sunny Miami for the Super Bowl.

Then disaster hit—The Saints found themselves with their backs to their own end zone, we needed a play if we wanted to at least give Weatherford some room to punt. Brees dropped back, he looked left then right, no one was open and the pocket was closing in. He scrambled to the right, and it was then I knew what he wanted to do.

I screamed, “Don’t throw it away”, but alas he did not hear me. “Safety” was the call, with Urlacher in the face of the referee, hands together atop his head.

The Saints could not recover; and the dream was slowly slipping away, and then in an instant, the light that was burning so bright, was no more. The Saints miracle season was over.

I left with my head up high, proud of my Saints, for they had did what no other had done in team history. I slept good that night, with the thought of the 2007 season.

We all know how 2007 turned out; we were early favorites to make it to the Super Bowl. 2007 would be the year the Saints would win it all. Then came the four straight losses, and it seemed that the curse had once again returned.

Everyone has jumped off the bandwagon, and so it is only us, the die hard fans, and the ones that year after year greet each new season with one thing in mind, HOPE….
