Phillies-Yankees: Teixeira, Matsui Lift New York To Game Two Victory

The New York Yankees gave a reason why they are Pedro Martinez’s daddy.

Martinez pitched six innings giving up three runs in the 3-1 Game Two victory by the Yankees. Pedro allowed two solo homers, one to first baseman Mark Teixeira in the fourth and then another to Hideki Matsui in the sixth on a pitch that was practically in the dirt.

Teixeira, who was struggling in this postseason as of late, was 1-for-3 with the homer and a strikeout as he really lifted Yankee spirits with his bomb.

Matsui was 2-for-3 on the night with the homer, a walk, and a strikeout.

Another bright spot for the Yankees was the performance they received from starter A.J. Burnett, who really bounced back after some poor outings in the ALDS. Burnett pitched seven strong innings allowing one run in the top of the second inning. He struck out nine and walked just two.

Mariano Rivera relieved Burnett for the six-out save and gave the young Yankee bullpen a rest.

The story for the Phillies was that the first four batters in the lineup could not get anything going. Rollins was 0-for-2, Victorino 1-for-3, Utley 0-for-3, and Ryan Howard was 0-for-4 as well.

Matt Stairs, who started as the DH instead of Ben Francisco, drove home Raul Ibanez in the second inning to put the Phillies up for a little while. Ibanez was 2-for-3 on the night with a double.

The World Series is now tied up at one game apiece as the series moves to Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia on Saturday night.

It looks like Cole Hamels will get the start against Andy Pettitte in a matchup that could either lead to a blow out or a pitcher’s duel.

Lee, Utley Fuel Phillies to Game 1 Victory

One word describes Cliff Lee in game one of the World Series Wednesday Night, and that word was "dominate". Lee was chosen to start game one by Charlie Manuel because the Philly skipper was confident that Lee would be able to perform the way he did. Lee put on a show. He allowed no earned runs, struck out ten batters with with zero walks and held the feared Yankee lineup to only six hits.

Lee out-dueled his buddy and former teammate CC Sabathia, who started for the Yankees in game one. Sabathia pitched seven innings allowing two runs on four hits.

The two runs Sabathia let up were to second baseman Chase Utley. Utley hit two homers off of Sabathia—both solo shots. Utley became the second person to hit two home runs as a lefty batter off a left handed pitcher. The only other batter so accomplish such a feat was Yankee great Babe Ruth.

The Yankees had a lot of trouble getting any offense going at all. Nick Swisher continued to struggle towards the end of the lineup and A-Rod had even more trouble in the heart of it; striking out three times. The only bright spot in the lineup was Mr. November, Derek Jeter, who went three for four on the night with a double.

Tomorrow night, the Yankees send AJ Burnett to the hill to face Pedro Martinez. This certainly is not a homecoming for Pedro. Expect a lot of "Whose your daddy?!" chants in the Bronx.

The Future of The Pittsburgh Pirates

If you haven’t heard of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization let me give you a brief history.

The Pirates contend in the National League Central Division against the Cardinals, Cubs, Brewers, Reds, and Astros. They are four-time World Series champions. They won the Series in 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971, and 1979 with players such as Willie Stargell, Dave Parker, Honus Wagner, Al Oliver, Rennie Stennett, and Roberto Clemente. The last time the Pirates were even close to being competitive was in the 1997 season when they were eliminated from playoff contention in the final week of the season. In those years, we saw two top players go such as Barry Bonds and Andy Van Slyke.

Since then we’ve seen players like Nate McLouth, Jack Wilson, Oliver Perez, Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, Jason Kendall, and Freddy Sanchez come and go. The draft picks have not been so great, with people like Bryan Bullington being drafted and nothing happening.

But with the recent trades that they have made in Pittsburgh there is a new feeling of hope.

This season they have traded players Nate McLouth, Jack Wilson, Nyjer Morgan, Sean Burnett, Adam LaRoche, Erick Hinske, Freddy Sanchez, John Grabow, and Tom Gorzelanny.

In-exchange, the Pirates received a slew of prospects that included Jeff Locke, Charlite Morton, Gorkys Hernandez, Lastings Milledge, Hunter Strickland, Argenis Diaz, Ronny Cedeno, Jeff Clement, Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin, Nathan Adcock, TIm Alderson, Kevin Hart, Jose Ascanio, and Josh Harrison.

All players who make Pittsburgh’s future mightier.

Right now, Pittsburgh’s rotation includes Zach Duke, Kevin Hart, Paul Maholm, Charlie Morton, and Ross Ohlendorf. Their bullpen includes former Nationals closer Jack Hanrahan and current close Matt Happs. Catcher is Ryan Doumit. Infielders include, Steve Pearce, Delwynn Young, Ronny Cedeno, and Andy LaRoche. Outfielders are Lastings Milledge, Andrew McCutchen, and Garrett Jones.

By 2012, here is what I predict the Pirates starting nine to be:

C: Ryan Doumit
1B: Andy LaRoche
2B: Neil Walker
SS: Ronny Cedeno
3B: Pedro Alvarez
LF:Garrett Jones
CF: Andrew McCutchen
RF: Jose Tabata

The only real changes are the top prospects coming up. Pedro Alvarez might make an appearance next year along with Neil Walker. Going into the 2012 season Tabata will be a full-time starter as a rookie. Lastings will not be there for long.

As for the rotation here it is…

1. Zach Duke
2. Paul Maholm
3. Tim Alderson
4. Bryan Morris
5. Charlie Morton

Duke, Maholm, and Morton will still be there around the 2012 season. Alderson will be tearing up the minor leagues as well as Morris. Right now, Alderson is 21-6 with a 3.01 ERA in over two seasons in the minor leagues that span forty five games.

The bullpen will consist of Joel Hanrahan being the setup man for Daniel McCutchen. Happs will be gone from Pittsburgh.

This team could become a wild card contender and maybe an NL Central contender but they still need a veteran presence in the lineup to complete the full process of rebuilding. As a baseball fan I have complete faith in the Pirates.

I hope to see this organization do well.

Yankees Take Season Finale Game From The Tribe

Yankees 5, Indians 2

The New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians wrapped up the final game between the two teams of the season. New York sent out the somewhat struggling Joba Chamberlain while Cleveland started Jeremy Sowers who is coming off a bullpen stint.

The game for Sowers did not start off so well. The first batter, Derek Jeter, singled to extend his hit streak to 15 games. Mark Teixeira singled just two batters later to extend his hit streak to 14 games.

Joba was also cruising as he was perfect through two innings. In the top of the third, Brett Gardner singled to start off the inning. Gardner also stole second and then got to third on a Derek Jeter infield bunt. Nick Swisher grounded into a double play which led to Gardner crossing home for the first run of the game.

Designated hitter Victor Martinez jacked a home run over Nick Swisher’s head in right field to tie up the game in the bottom of the first, but that was the only bad thing Joba would do in the whole game as he poised for victory.

When it looked like the Yankees were going to score, there was a few drops of rain and lightning. Swisher came through with a bases loaded two-run double scoring Ramiro Pena and Brett Gardner to put the Yankees up 3-1.

After a pitching change, Alex Rodriguez came through with a single off the glove of Asbrubal Cabrera which scored Jeter and Swisher.

Joba would let up one more run in the eighth and Mariano Rivera would pick up save No. 11 of the season.

Joba went eight innings that included five strikeouts, two walks and one diving catch.

Nick Swisher was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Angel Berroa started at third and was 0-for-3 while Alex Rodriguez was 1-for-4 as the designated hitter.

The Yankees start a home series against the Rangers tomorrow.

Yankees Comeback Ends In Heartbreak

Indians 5, Yankees 4

The New York Yankees came into the final game of a four game series leading the AL East and looking to take game number three away from the Indians. The Yankees sent out Phil Hughes to the mound to face former Yankees and Marlins pitcher Carl Pavano.

The beginning of the game was not a great one for Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes. In the third, Hughes gave up a two-run single off of third baseman Jhonny Peralta, which scored Trevor Crowe and Asdrubal Cabrera moving right fielder Ben Francisco. Mark DeRosa, on the next at-bat, flied out to right scoring Francisco.

Hughes would let up three runs that inning.

Hughes would only pitch five innings giving up a total of four runs and striking out six. By that time, the Yankees were down 4-0 heading into the top of the sixth.

But all would change in the sixth from the bat of Mark Teixeira. Big Tex would homer off of Pavano scoring Johnny Damon to cut the lead in half, 4-2.

Then in the eighth off of Rafael Perez, Teixeira hit a double scoring Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon. Teixeira had four RBI’s accounting for all of the Yankees four runs.

In the ninth, Phil Coke tried to extend the game into extra innings. He led off the inning with a walk to Trevor Crowe. Then Cabrera bunted to move Crowe over with one out.

Coke was taken out for David Robertson who walked Ben Francisco. Then on the next pitch, Jhonny Peralta singled past the diving A-Rod to score Crowe, and for the Indians to win in the ninth.

Coke was charged with the loss as he dropped to 1-3.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched three innings and struck out three, letting up zero hits, and walking one batter.

Francisco Cervelli started for Jorge Posada but went 0-for-2. Posada did eventually pinch hit for Cervelli.

New York Yankees Claim AL East Division Lead Behind Texeira and Jeter

Yankees 3, Indians 1

The New York Yankees have claimed the division lead for the first time since the last game of the 2006 season. It has been a long road for the Yankees, but finally they have reclaimed what has been rightfully theirs for a long time.

The Yankees were led by a good pitching performance from starter Andy Pettitte. Pettitte lasted five innings and gave up six hits and only let up one run. He struck out one batter and walked six. He picked up win number five, which leads the Yankees.

However, Pettitte left in the sixth with an apparent back injury. Manager Joe Girardi did take him out for a precautionary measure. No word yet on what was actually wrong with him. After that, they bullpen took over.

Reliever Alfredo Aceves came in for Pettitte with the bases loaded. Aceves only allowed a sac-fly by Shin-Shoo Choo that scored Mark DeRosa. Aceves would pitch three scoreless innings, striking out three batters setting up the save from the great close Mariano Rivera. With the save, Rivera has saved 51 games for Pettitte, the most all-time.

We also need to talk about the Yankee offense in this game. The Yankees struck early and that’s all they virtually needed. The Yankees scored two runs off RBI’s from shortstop Derek Jeter and first baseman Mark Texeira. Jeter was 2-for-5 in this game. Texeira was 1-for-5 and with his RBI single, that would tally as he 40th RBI of the season.

Nick Swisher, 1-for-2, also batted in a run and contributed to the 3-1 victory.

Returning from the disabled list was catcher Jorge Posada. He was activated just before the game started and catcher Kevin Cash was optioned back to Triple-A Scranton W/B. Posada caught the whole entire game and said he felt good when he talked to YES reporter Kim Jones. Posada was 2-for-3 with a double.

Tomorrow, the Yankees play the Indians at 7:05 P.M. pending on the weather. CC Sabathia faces off against Fausto Carmona. This is CC’s first start in Cleveland since being traded to Milwaukee last season and then signing with the Yankees this year.

Tigers-Blue Jays: Late Rally Secures Toronto Victory

The Blue Jays were down all game, and the Tigers had a 3-0 lead going into the eighth.

Edwin Jackson pitched a great game for Detroit, going 7.1 innings. He struck out four and only gave up one run on a home run by Scott Rolen.

It was the bullpen that cost the Tigers the game. Brandon Lyon pitched one inning and let up two runs to let Toronto lead, which included an Aaron Hill home run.

The Tigers would get one back, however, after Brandon Inge hit a homer off B.J. Ryan, who blew his first save.

Inge finished 2-for-4 with the homer and a double.

In the ninth, Rod Barajas hit a game-winning single that scored pinch-runner Jose Bautista who came in for Adam Lind.

The Blue Jays won 5-4 and improved to 2-0 on the year.

Jays starter David Purcey pitched seven innings and allowed only three runs (two earned) on five hits. He struck out five.

Ryan (1-0) recorded the win, while Lyon (0-1) was hit with the loss for Detroit.

Tigers' first baseman Miguel Cabrera was 2-for-2 with a double and two walks in the losing effort for Detroit.

Brewers-Giants: Giants' Offense Contributes in Win

Brewers 6
Giants 10

W: J. Martinez (1-0)
L: J. Suppan (0-1)

The Giants bullpen helped to them to pull off the win at San Francisco. Joe Martinez came in to relieve Tim Lincecum in the fourth. Lincecum did not have a great game. He pitched three innings and gave up three runs, but did strikeout five batters.

Martinez pitched two innings, let up two runs, and got the decision.

If it were not for homers by Aaron Rowand, Bengie Molina, and Randy Winn, the Giants would not have won this game.

Aaron Rowand was 2-for-3 with three RBI. First baseman Travis Ishikawa also had three RBI along with a triple.

Contributing runs for Milwaukee was pitcher Jeff Suppan, Rickie Weeks, Mike Cameron, Prince Fielder, and Bill Hall.

Suppan got the loss. He pitched through four innings and gave up six runs on six hits.

Rays 3
Red Sox 5

W: J. Beckett (1-0)
L: J. Shields (0-1)
S: J. Papelbon (1)

The home opener for the Boston Red Sox against the Tampa Bay Rays was rained out yesterday, so they were forced to play the first game of the season today.

The Red Sox threw Josh Beckett out on the mound, while Joe Maddon and the defending American League champions Tampa Bay Rays were represented by the phenom James Shields.

But I might be overexaggerating in my description of pitcher Shields, for his performance was not a great one.

Shields threw five and one-third innings. He let in all of the five runs the Red Sox scored.

The first came off a Dustin Pedroia home run. He also let up a homer to the Red Sox captain Jason Varitek. Shields threw two strikeouts, but walked three batters as well. He was accredited with the loss.

His counterpart, Josh Beckett, threw seven strong innings and struck out ten Ray batters. He let in one run on two hits—that run coming off the bat of Carl Crawford. Hideki Okajima would allowed two RBIs in relief of Evan Longoria.

Papelbon struck out two for the save.

Pedroia was one for three with an RBI.

Kevin Youkilis was two for four with a double.

Jason Bay and J.D. Drew also contributed RBIs.

Royals-White Sox: Thome Helps Sox Win Opener

Royals 2
White Sox 4

w: O. Dotel (1-0)
L: K. Farnsworth (0-1)
S: B. Jenks (1)

This was a tale of two stories like most games are.

For the Royals, the story was the starting pitching and then the bullpen. The Royals started Gil Meche for the first game of the season. Meche pitched seven strong innings giving up only one run on seven hits. Meche also struck out seven White Sox batters. The was the good side of the story. The ugly side was the bullpen.

The bullpen only included one man and that was Kyle Farnsworth. After letting Josh Fields and Chris Getz on base, Farnsworth pitched to the always dangerous Jim Thome and Thome won the battle. Thome hit a three-run homer in the eighth to give the White Sox the win.

Overall, Thome was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI.

The two runs for Kansas City came on an Alex Gordon single that scored Jose Guillen and a Gordon homer off of Mark Buehrle in the second inning.

Buehrle pitched five innings and have up two runs on six hits. He struck out two batters and allowed two walks.

Octavio Dotel recorded the win with Bobby Jenks getting his first save of the season.

Braves-Phillies: Derek Lowe Impressive in Debut Start

Derek Lowe’s debut for the Braves was one to remember.

Lowe threw eight innings of shut out ball in Philadelphia’s Citizen Bank Ballpark. He only gave up two hits and struck out four Phillies batters. He was the highlight on defense for Atlanta.

Hitting was a completely different story.

In the first, catcher Brian McCann hit a two-run home run off of starter Brett Myers to give the Braves an early 2-0 lead.

The next inning showcased homers from Jeff Francoeur and rookie center fielder Jordan Schafer. It was Schafer’s first major league at-bat in which he hit a home run. The game was 4-0 after the first two innings.

Brett Myers went six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. He struck out six with one walk.

The Philly offense could not get anything going. The power hitters Utley, Howard, and Ibanez were a total of 0-for-11 with three strikeouts.

There was some drama in the final inning. Closer Mike Gonzalez let two men on base with one out and Ryan Howard up with Raul Ibanez on deck. Gonzalez struck out Howard with a fastball and then got Ibanez with a slider to finish the game.

The score was 4-1 Braves.

A very exciting game to start off the season. I cannot wait for tomorrow.

The Mexico City Red Devils defeated the Monterrey Sultans, 4-3, to kick off the start of the Mexican League and the Minor League Baseball season.

Mexico scored first in the bottom of the second when Carlos Valencia scored off a Jose Luis Sandoval single.

Mexico would strike for two runs in the fourth. In the sixth, Eduardo Arredondo would triple, and set himself up to score when Oscar Robles sacrifice flied to score him.

Mexico would quench a three-run eighth by Monterrey.

Roberto Ramirez picked up the win for Mexico with three strikeouts, five hits, and no runs allowed. Monterrey's Adrian Ramirez gave up four runs and took the loss. David Cortes picked up his first save of the season.

The All-World Baseball Classic Team

The World Baseball Classic came to a close last night as Japan defeated Korea 5-3 in ten innings in a terrific game. Japan won their second straight World Baseball Classic with Daisuke Matsuzaka winning his second MVP in the WBC.

I have created an All-Tournament team of sorts. I have picked the ones I thought out performed the others and who might deserve to be on an All-Classic team if there was one.
Begin Slideshow

NL West Preview: Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers have resigned Manny Ramirez and are looking to get to the next step and go to the World Series. Last year they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS. The Dodgers do have what it takes. They did lose Brad Penny to Boston but have Clayton Kershaw becoming a shining star.

The Dodgers need Jason Schmidt to be totally healthy as he will be a key in the Dodgers' playoff run. James Loney brings a 13 home run, 90 RBI season back with him, and Russell Martin had 13 homers and 63 RBIs in an All-Star season.

Keep an eye on: Clayton Kershaw, sp

Clayton Kershaw is the Dodgers' prime prospect coming up this year. Kershaw played in 22 games last year for L.A. going 5-5 with a 4.26 ERA. He has to settle his stuff down if he wants to be in the Majors for a long time.

Projected Lineup
1. Rafael Furcal, ss
2. Juan Pierre, cf
3. Manny Ramirez, lf
4. Russell Martin, c
5. James Loney, 1b
6. Matt Kemp, rf
7. Blake Dewitt, 2b
8.
NL West Preview: Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks fell short in making the playoffs last year with only 82 wins but with a low budget and aces like Brandon Webb and Dan Haren, the might be pretty competitive in the west. You can also look at rookie Max Scherzer who is coming up in the ranks.

The Diamondbacks signed Felipe Lopez to replace Orlando Hudson at second base and the Diamondbacks would love to have Mark Reynolds continue his power surge that he had last year except they do not want him to cool off. Chris Young and Stephen Drew also return looking for a playoff run.

Keep an eye on: Max Scherzer, sp/rp

Even though the D'Backs probably will start him off in the bullpen, I have him the rotation after Danny Haren. He could do the Joba Chamberlain thing though.

Projected Lineup
1. Felipe Lopez, 2b
2. Chris Young, cf
3. Stephen Drew, ss
4. Conor Jackson, lf
5. Justin Upton, rf
6. Chad Tracy, 1b
7. Mark Reynolds, 3b
8. Chris Snyder, c

Projected Pitching Staff
1. Brandon Webb, rhp
2. Dan Haren, rhp
3. Max Scherzer, rhp
4. Doug Davis, lhp
5.
NL West Preview: San Francisco Giants

The San Francisco Giants ended last year with a 72-90 record, a tiny improvement from 2007. This year they'll finish third in the West because the hitting will not be there this year. Edgar Renteria will be a bright spot along with Aaron Rowand and Fred Lewis. They will be expecting to call up catcher Buster Posey who was drafted last year along with Madison Bumgarner a left handed pitcher.

Speaking up pitching Tim Lincecum will be looking to have another marvelous performance coming off an 18-5 record with a 2.62 ERA. Matt Cain will also looking to be adding an extra punch and he needs to do it because he had an 8-14 record last year. Barry Zito needs to come through as well with a 10-17 record. Newly signed Randy Johnson will be going for his 300th this year.

Keep an eye on: Pablo Sandoval, c/1b/3b

Pablo Sandobal can play anywhere and will in the lineup starting this year. Sandoval played in 41 games for the Giants last year batting .345 with three homers and 24 RBIs.

Projected Lineup
1. Randy Winn, rf
2. Edgar Renteria, ss
3. Pablo Sandoval, 3b
4. Bengie Molina, c
5. Fred Lewis, lf
6. Aaron Rowand, cf
7. Travis Ishikawa, 1b
8. Emanuel Burriss, 2b

Projected Pitching Staff
1. Tim Lincecum, rhp
2. Matt Cain, rhp
3. Randy Johnson, lhp
4. Johnathan Sanchez, lhp
5.
NL West Preview: San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres has a disappointing season last year only managing 63 wins last year after an 89 win year the season before. This year could be the year things start to change for San Diego and it starts with the pitching rotation.

Jake Peavy will lead the Padres on the staff that includes Chris Young (7-6, 3.96 ERA) and Korean Cha Seung Baek (6-9, 4.62 ERA). A couple of new comers Josh Greer and Wade LeBlanc. Young needs to stay healthy for this team to do well.

The Padres also bring in Mark Worrell from St. Louis to help them in the bullpen. They lost all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman to the Brewers and might have to rely on Heath Bell or Cla Meredith to help them close out games.

Adrian Gonzalez leads the lineup with 36 homers and 119 RBIs. They lost Khalil Greene at short and replacing him is Luis Rodriguez who does not have a lot of Major League experience. Brian Giles returns to the outfield as well as Chase Headley.

Keep an eye on: Heath Bell, rp

Stepping into the closer void left by Trevor Hoffman, Heath Bell is going to have some pretty big shoes to fill. He did not have one save last year and is not expected to carry the load for the Padres in the bullpen. We'll see this year if he's up to the task.

Projected Lineup
1. Jody Gerut, cf
2. Edgar Gonzalez, 2b
3. Brian Giles, rf
4. Adrian Gonzalez, 1b
5. Kevin Kouzmanoff, 3b
6. Chase Headley, lf
7. Luis Rodriguez, ss
8. Nick Hundley, c

Projected Pitching Staff
1. Jake Peavey, rhp
2. Chris Young, rhp
3. Cha Seung Baek, rhp
4. Josh Greer, rhp
5. Kyle Banks, 1b
2. Jaff Decker, of
3. Matt Latos, rhp
4. Kellen Kulbacki, rf
5. Cedric Hunter, cf

NL West Preview: Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies are two years removed from their World Series run in 2007 and things couldn't be more different. Last year, they finished with a 74-88 record. They finished fourth in the NL West.

This offseason, the Rockies made some big trades. They traded power hitter Matt Holliday to Oakland and in return got prospect Carlos Gonzalez, pitcher Greg Smith, and closer Huston Street. With the Street deal, the Rockies released Brian Fuentes.

The Rockies will finish last in the division this year because the Padres will have Chris Young and Jake Peavy to get them through the year. The Rockies' lineup will not do as well. Todd Helton's production will decrease and you will not see anything from Troy Tulowitzki or Brad Hawpe this year.

The staff, led by Aaron Cook might have some success. Cook was 16-9 last year with a 3.96 ERA. Ubaldo Jiminez will need more than a 12-12 record to get by and bringing up the rear in the rotation is Jason Marquis who was 11-9 last year.

Keep an eye on: Ian Stewart, 3b

Ian Stewart will backup Garrett Atkins this year at third base. Stewart might see some action after he hit 10 homers and drove in 41 runs in 81 games. He could see more action if Atkins' production starts to slip.

Projected Lineup
1. Ryan Spiliborghs, cf
2. Clint Barmes, 2b
3. Todd Helton, 1b
4. Garrett Atkins, 3b
5. Brad Hawpe, rf
6. Troy Tulowitzki, ss
7. Chris Ianetta, c
8.
NL Central Preview: Chicago Cubs

The National League's top team last year will comeback and do it again. The Cubs return with Alfonso Soriano, Derek Lee, and Geovany Soto in their lineup. Soto is the reigning NL Rookie of the Year and plans to stay on the same course. The second-year catcher hit 23 homers with 86 runs driven in. He batted .285 in 141 games.

As for the rotation, they lost Jason Marquis to Colorado but they gained Luis VIzcaino in return. Leading the staff is Carlos Zambrano (14-6, 3.91 ERA), then Ryan Dempster (17-6, 2.96 ERA) followed by Ted Lilly (17-9, 4.09 ERA), and Rich Harden (5-1, 1.77 ERA) who was acquired during the year from Oakland. If everyone could stay healthy, they Cubs are going to be a force.

In the bullpen, the loss of Kerry Wood will not effect them. Carlos Marmol will take over at the closer role with Vizcaino setting him up. Jeff Samardzija will mostly pitch in the latter innings. The Cubs also signed Kevin Gregg from Florida who had 29 saves last year so if Marmol fails then Gregg will be in.

Keep an eye on: Carlos Marmol, rp

Now that Wood is gone, Marmol has a chance to shine as the closer. Last year, in the set up role, Marmol was 2-4 with a 2.68 ERA and had seven saves. His production should quadruple.

Projected Lineup
1. Alfonso Soriano, lf
2. Aaron Miles, 2b
3. Derek Lee, 1b
4. Milton Bradley, rf
5. Aramis Ramirez, 3b
6. Geovany Soto, c
7. Kosuke Fukudome, cf
8. Ryan Theriot, ss

Projected Pitching Staff
1. Carlos Zambrano, rhp
2. Ryan Dempster, rhp
3. Ted Lilly, lhp
4. Rich Harden, rhp
5.
NL Central Preview: St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals will most likely end up second to the hated Chicago Cubs again. The Cardinals do have the lineup and the talent, but overall, the Cubs are better.

Albert Pujols is poised for a big season and we all have to watch out for Todd Wellemeyer this year as he shocked us last year with a 13-9 record and a 3.71 ERA. Adam Wainwright will head the staff as he had an 11-3 season, though mostly injured in the season, he pitched in 20 games and if was healthy would've have St. Louis a playoff push.

Ryan Ludwick is coming off a terrific season where he had 37 homers and 113 RBIs and is looking to improve even more.

Keep an eye on: Jason Motte, rp

Jason Motte is a new reliever on the block for St. Louis. He spent his days last year in Triple-A Memphis. He was 4-3 with a 3.24 ERA in 63 games. If Chris Perez can't cut it as closer, expect Motte to step in.

Projected Lineup
1. Skip Schumaker, lf
2. Ryan Ludwick, rf
3. Albert Pujols, 1b
4. Rick Ankiel, cf
5. Troy Glaus, 3b
6. Yadier Molina, c
7. Khalil Greene, ss
8. Adam Kennedy, 2b

Projected Pitching Staff
1. Adam Wainwright, rhp
2. Kyle Lohse, rhp
3. Todd Wellemeyer, rhp
4. Joel Pineiro, rhp
5. Chris Carpenter, rhp

Projected Bullpen
Chris Perez
Jason Motte
Ryan Franklin
Trever Miller
Josh Kinney
Kyle McClellan
Brad Thompson

Top Prospects
1.
NL Central Preview: Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds will make the greatest improvement this year. I have a feeling they will finish above .500 after a 74-88 record last year. They will do so well that they will contend for the NL Central division crown and an NL Wildcard berth but will fall short in both.

Players like Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto, Joey Votto, and, Brandon Phillips will step up this year. This will be their first full season without Adam Dunn who was traded a the trade deadline last year to Arizona. Jay Bruce will have to come in as he will fill-in for Dunn in right field. Chris Dickerson will be in left and Willy Taveras will be in center. It's a whole different Cincinnati Red ball club this year.

Keep an eye on: Chris Dickerson, lf

Chris Dickerson is part of the new outfield look for the Reds this year. It's kind of strange not to see Ken Griffey Jr or Adam Dunn out there. Dickerson played mostly for Triple-A Louisville last year hitting .297 and jacking 11 homers and 53 RBIs. Dickerson is from Hollywood, CA and is looking to bring showtime to Cincy.

Projected Lineup
1. Willy Taveras, cf
2. Brandon Phillips, 2b
3. Chris Dickerson, lf
4. Edwin Encarnacion, 3b
5. Joey Votto, 1b
6. Jay Bruce, rf
7. Ramon Hernandez, c
8. Alex Gonzalez, ss

Projected Pitching Staff
1. Edinson Volquez, rhp
2. Bronson Arroyo, rhp
3. Aaron Harang, rhp
4. Johnny Cueto, rhp
5.
NL Central Preview: Milwaukee Brewers

Slim at pitching, the Milwaukee Brewers might slip to fourth this year pending on whether or not their hitting will pick it up. Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, J.J. Hardy, and company will the lead the offensive power house but the Brewers will be without Ben Sheets. They could not resign him nor could they get C.C. Sabathia back as he left to go east.

The Brewers will have to turn to new ace Yovanni Gallardo and rookie Manny Parra. With the loss of Eric Gagne, the Brewers will rely on Carlos Villanueva, who had one save last year, to fill in for the closer duty.

Keep an eye on: Matt Gamel, 3b

If Bill Hall starts slipping at third base, expect to see Matt Gamel come in. Gamel is a rookie and hit 19 homers and batted in 96 runs in Double-A Huntsville last year.

Projected Lineup
1. Rickie Weeks, 2b
2. J.J. Hardy, ss
3. Ryan Braun, lf
4. Prince Fielder, 1b
5. Corey Hart, rf
6. Bill Hall, 3b
7. Mike Cameron, cf
8. Jason Kendall, c

Projected Pitching Staff
1. Yovanni Gallardo rhp
2. Jeff Suppan, rhp
3. Manny Parra, lhp
4.
NL Central Preview: Houston Astros

The Houston Astros, I predict, will finish fifth in the NL Central. I don't think that they will have enough steam to finish in the top and they will be beaten out by the Cincinnati Reds. The Astros need help in the rotation because Roy Oswalt cannot carry this team on his arm.

Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee will need to provide as much power and driving force as they can. Berkman cannot get injured while in a playoff hunt either.

Keep an eye on: Wandy Rodriguez, sp

Wandy will need a magic wand this year to transform is arm into a cannon. Rodriguez will probably be third in the rotation behind Hampton. Wandy was 9-7 last year with a 3.54 ERA in 25 games. Wandy needs to prove himself this year if he wants to stay in the Majors.

Projected Lineup
1. Kaz Matsuim 2b
2. Michael Bourn, cf
3. Miguel Tejada, ss
4. Lance Berkman, 1b
5. Carlos Lee, lf
6. Hunter Pence, rf
7.
NL Central Preview: Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates organization has been on a downfall since they lost Barry Bonds. Over the past five years, their highest win total was 72, and that was in 2004. Least year they only managed to grab 67 wins. This organization is getting pathetic but there is hope to those who wait.

Players like Nate McLouth, Andrew McCutchen, and Andy LaRoche are coming into their own and soon enough, if they don't get traded them and pitchers Ian Snell, Zach Duke, and Tom Gorzelanny will blossom. This year is not the year though.

Keep an eye on: Steve Pearce, of

Relatively unknown to the untrained baseball eye, Steve Pearce could be big for the Pirates this year. He is expected to get better even though he had a .248 average in 37 games.

Projected Lineup
1. Nate McLouth, cf
2. Freddy Sanchez, 2b
3. Nyjer Morgan, lf
4. Andy LaRoche, 3b
5. Adam LaRoche, 1b
6. Steve Pearce, rf
7. Ryan Doumit, c
8.
New York Mets 2009 Season Preview

The New York Mets will win the NL East this time, after blowing the lead two straight years in a row.

They will have a great bullpen to guarantee Johan about 30 wins this year.

Na, I'm just joking. However, Johan could get 30 wins this year if he does as well as he did last year, and stays healthy.

The Mets did some shopping and brought in Francisco Rodriguez to close and J.J. Putz to set him up. Putz is a good closer, but will be in a safer role as a setup man for K-Rod. The Mets also have the same dangerous lineup as always, top-to-bottom. They will start rookie Daniel Murphy in left, and could possibly put Nick Evans at first if Carlos Delgado starts to slip.

Keep An Eye On: Ryan Church, of

An injury-plagued year cost Church some playing time in 2008, but he is back in 2009 to kick some butt. He played in only 90 games last year. He batted .276 with 12 homers and 49 RBI.

Projected Lineup
1. Jose Reyes, ss
2. Luis Castillo, 2b
3.
NL East Preview: Philadelphia Phillies

Yes, the Mets will finally hold off the Phillies to win the NL East this year, I swear.

The Mets have the bullpen now to finish games and hold off late comebacks by teams. The Phillies however might win the wildcard in the National League. They still have Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard, two threats on opposite sides of the ball. Chase Utley will also help out with the dominance of the Phillies along with Jimmy Rollins.

But since Cole Hamels is only one man, the rest of the staff will not get it done. Jamie Moyer will start to falter. Joe Blanton will continue giving up runs and Brett Myers will not be as solid as last year. Brad Lidge will be good in the bullpen as well as Chad Durbin and Ryan Madson.

Will they win the World Series again? Only time will tell.

Keep an eye on: Ronny Paulino, c

Coming off a rather disappointing 40 games in Pittsburgh, Paulino tore up the minor leagues with Indianapolis. He batted .306 in 30 games. With Pittsburgh he only had a .212 average with 18 runs batted in. Paulino will have to battle for the starting catcher job with Chris Coste and Carlos Ruiz.

Projected Lineup
1. Jimmy Rollins, ss
2. Chase Utley, 2b
3. Raul Ibanez, lf
4. Ryan Howard, 1b
5. Shane Victorino, cf
6. Jayson Werth, rf
7. Pedro Feliz, 3b
8. Carlos Ruiz, c

Projected Pitching Staff
1. Cole Hamels, lhp
2. Brett Myers, rhp
3. Joe Blanton, rhp
4. Jamie Moyer, lhp
5. Kyle Kendrick, rhp

Projected Bullpen
Brad Lidge
Ryan Madson
Chad Durbin
Scott Eyre
Clay Condrey
J.C. Romero

Top Prospects
1. Carlos Carrasco, rhp
2. Jason Donald, ss
3. Michael Taylor, of
4. Domonic Brown, of
5. J.A. Happ, lhp

NL East Preview: Florida Marlins

The Marlins will have a lot of young help this year, with the returning Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, Jeremy Hermida, and Cameron Maybin looking to make significant contributions.

They also acquired third baseman Emilio Bonifacio from Washington for pitcher Scott Olsen. However, Florida did lose closer Kevin Gregg, who had 29 saves last year. Replacing him is Matt Lindstrom.

The reason why I have the Marlins in third place is because they will not compare to the Phillies or the Mets in terms of their pitching staff.

Josh Johnson needs to come into full stride this year. He only started 14 games, but he did go 7-1. Andrew Miller also needs to step up this year as well. Last year he was 6-10 with a 5.87 ERA in 19 games.

Keep an Eye on: Matt Lindstrom, relief pitcher

Although he injured himself in the WBC, Lindstrom is a young gun who picked up five saves last year with the Marlins. Lindstrom adopts the full-time closer role from Kevin Gregg.

Projected Lineup

1. Cameron Maybin, CF
2. Jeff Baker, C
3. Hanley Ramirez, SS
4. Jorge Cantu, 1B
5. Dan Uggla, 2B
6. Cody Ross, RF
7. Jeremy Hermida, LF
8. Emilio Bonifacio, 3B

Projected Pitching Staff

1. Ricky Nolasco, RHP
2. Josh Johnson, RHP
3. Chris Volstad, RHP
4. Anibal Sanchez, RHP
5. Andrew Miller, LHP

Projected Bullpen

Matt Lindstrom
Leo Nunez
Renyel Pinto
Logan Kensing

Top Prospects

1. Cameron Maybin, CF
2. Mike Stanton, CF
3. Logan Morrison, 1B
4. Matt Dominguez, 3B
5. Chris Coghlan, 2B

NL East Preview: Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves broke up their great pitching staff a few years ago with the departures of Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine. This year, John Smoltz went to the Red Sox, and last year, Glavine came back from the Mets; however, Glavine still wasn't the same. The only thing the Braves got last year to help out their starting pitching was Javier Vazquez, formerly of the White Sox, and Derek Lowe. It is still not the same as having the big three, and that's why the Braves will finish fourth this year in the NL East.

Keep and Eye on: Jorge Campillo, SP
Personally, I think that Campillo still needs some seasoning. But this year he might bang out 11-14 wins for the Braves. Last year Campillo was 8-7 with 3.91 ERA and 107 strikeouts.

Projected Lineup

1. Kelly Johnson, 2b
2. Yunel Escobar, ss
3. Chipper Jones, 3b
4. Brian McCann, c
5. Jeff Francoeur, rf
6. Casey Kotchman, 1b
7. Brandon Jones, lf
8. Jordan Schafer, cf

Projected Pitching Staff

1. Derek Lowe, rhp
2. Javier Vazquez, rhp
3. Jair Jurrjens, rhp
4. Jorge Campillo, rhp
5. Jo-Jo Reyes, lhp

Projected Bullpen

Mike Gonzalez
Manny Acosta
Blaine Boyer
Boone Logan
Jeff Bennett

Top Prospects

1. Jason Heyward, rf
2. Tommy Hanson
3. Jordan Schafer, cf
4. Freddie Freeman, 1b
5. Gorkys Hernandez, cf

Washington Nationals 2009 Season Preview

The Washington Nationals enter the 2009 season with a young, revamped lineup. The Nationals will lean on third baseman Ryan Zimmerman for power, and will have to turn to Lastings Milledge or Nick Johnson to do the rest. Scott Olsen, acquired from Florida, will have to carry the pitching load.

Keep An Eye On: John Lannan, SP

John Lannan started 31 games last year for Washington. It was his rookie year. He had a 9-15 record with a 3.91 ERA—not such a bad ERA. He struck out 117 batters. Lannan will be a big key in the 2009 rotation.

Projected Lineup
1. Lastings Milledge, CF
2. Christian Guzman, SS
3. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B
4. Adam Dunn, RF
5. Josh Willingham, LF
6. Nick Johnson, 1B
7. Anderson Hernandez, 2B
8. Jesus Flores, C

Projected Pitching Staff
1. Scott Olsen, LHP
2. John Lannan, LHP
3. Daniel Cabrera, RHP
4. Collin Balester, RHP
5. Garrett Mock, RHP

Projected Bullpen
Joel Hanrahan
Saul Rivera
Steven Shell
Jason Bergmann

Top Prospects
1. Jordan Zimmerman, RHP
2. Ross Detwiler, LHP
3. Michael Burgess, RF
4. Chris Marrero, 1B
5. Jack McGeary, LHP

The 2009 AL West Preview: A Profile of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have lost some steam during the offseason, but they can still be a playoff contender.

They lost their closer and single-season saves king Francisco Rodriguez (K-Rod) to the NY Mets, their first baseman, Mark Teixeira, to the NY Yankees, and their left fielder, Garrett Anderson, to the Braves.

They were, however, able to sign Brian Fuentes to replace K-Rod.

Over the last three years, the Angels' win totals have increased. In 2006, they had 89 wins, in 2007, they had 94 wins, and in 2008, they had 100 wins.

However, no matter how many wins they get this season, they are certain to win the AL West division.

Here's the Spring '09 profile of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim:

Projected Lineup

Chone Figgins-3B
Howie Kendrick-2B
Vladimir Guerrero-RF
Torii Hunter-CF
Juan Rivera-DH
Mike Napoli-C
Kendry Morales-1B
Gary Matthews Jr.-LF
Erick Aybar-SS

Projected Pitching Staff

John Lackey-RHP
Ervin Santana-RHP
Joe Saunders-LHP
Jered Weaver-RHP
Dustin Moseley-RHP

Projected Bullpen

Brian Fuentes
Scot Shields
Jose Arredondo
Darren Oliver
Kevin Jepsen
Justin Speier

Top Prospects

Jordan Walden-RHP
Nick Adenhart-RHP
Hank Conger-C
Peter Bourjos-OF
Trevor Reckling-LHP
