By the Numbers: Georgia Runs All Over Georgia Tech

In case you missed it last night, Georgia Tech's dominance over the Georgia Bulldog came to a sudden end at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

For one solid year, many in the Bulldog nation have endured a flood of verbal abuse from Jacket fans. After last year's victory the Jackets pranced around Sanford Stadium as if they had won 10 straight over the Dawgs.

Tech players acted as if they had never been there before (I guess there is a reason for that), tearing up the hedges at Sanford Stadium. Showing the same lack of respect they have accused Georgia players and fans of for years.

Last night all of that came to an end. Last night order was restored to the football universe in the state of Georgia. Last night the annoying buzz of a Yellow Jacket was swatted into the turf.

Georgia came into this game with a chip on their shoulder. That was obvious from their first offensive drive. Washaun Ealey and Caleb King ran all over Tech. Tech's defensive front was pushed around like they were a middle school team.

They simply had no answer for Georgia's suddenly dominant run game.

The Dawgs put up Tech like numbers on the ground, finishing with a Mark Richt era high of 339 yards rushing. Ealey and King tag teamed the Jackets for long runs, highlighted by King's 76 yard burst. King left Tech's players in his wake, never looking back as he split the middle of the field.

Tech's vaunted offense had it's moments, but Georgia's strength at defensive tackle shutdown Dwyer up the middle and contained Nesbitt enough to slow Tech down.

For Tech fans this will be a bitter loss. My guess is that they will be a classless in defeat as they were in victory last year.

They will point to their 10-win season, and their ACC Championship game berth. They will point to Georgia's five losses and their second-tier-bowl berth. They will try to find satisfaction.

They will fail.

Georgia can simply smile through the bitter reaction that is sure to come over the next 365 days. This one will be sweet.

But unlike Tech's win last year, it is not sweet because it is so rare. No, this one is sweet because it shuts the buzz up for 12 wonderful months.

Georgia owns Tech, there is no doubt about that. The Dawgs have now won 15 of the last 19 games played in this series.

Although the two teams don't agree on the number of games played, one thing is undeniable, Mark Richt has put Tech in it's place for almost a full decade.

Richt is now 8-1 against Tech. The great Paul Johnson is now 1-1 against the Dawgs.

So Georgia now awaits a bowl invitation. Hopefully the Music City bowl will call and the Dawgs will head to Nashville. Any bowl will be nice considering what this season has become.

Tech now heads to play another ACC team that couldn't handle a "mediocre" SEC team in their conference championship game. Tech and Clemson will meet to see which BCS bowl will have to endure an over rated ACC team as one of it's teams.

So to all my Tech friends out there, I say enjoy your championship game. Enjoy your BCS bowl game (if you get it).

Just remember one thing...on Nov. 28 in Atlanta, you couldn't beat the Dawgs...again. Ding dong, the streak is dead...the Tech win streak is dead at one!!

Go Dawgs!!!

An Open Letter To NFL Fans: Don't We Deserve a Better Overtime System?

Is it just me, or is the NFL and its overtime system due for a major overhaul?

First, I will acknowledge that I am a die hard Falcons fan. I am a season ticket holder, and have been for many years. So yes, I am still bitter over the Falcons bitter defeat this past Sunday.

But let me also say that over the years I have repeatedly voiced my distaste for a system that in some cases never allows one team a chance to score a point.

Just to compare, let's think about baseball and extra innings. Both teams get to bat in each inning, correct? What if the game ended in the top of the 10th when the visiting team scored?

In hockey's exciting shoot out sessions, do both teams not get an equal number of attempts to put one in the net?

Even in college football, each team is allowed a possession in each over time session. You may not like the fact that each team starts at the 25-yard line, but at least they both get a chance to score.

Many have said that the college overtime setup is not "real football." Argue that point if you want to, but to me the NFL system is even less so.

Case in point...the Falcons trail the Giants by 14 points in the fourth quarter. Matt Ryan leads his team to two scores in the final minutes to tie the game. The Falcons have all the momentum, the crowd is silent as the Giants are on the brink of blowing another win.

Time expires in regulation, so now we move to "sudden death." Sounds real exciting doesn't it?

The captains meet at the 50-yard line for the coin toss. Matt Ryan calls tails...the referee tells us, it's heads. This now becomes the worst decision Ryan made all day.

So on a day when the Falcons rally from 14 points down to force overtime, they are rewarded with a system that gives them no chance to touch the ball?

Our buddy Daniel Cox lays out the reasoning the NFL uses for this system, and the stats for overtime winners and losers in his weekly column. Check it out by clicking this link .

But did you know that since 1994, when kickoffs were moved back to the 35-yard line, the coin toss winner has won 60 percent of the time?

There are many disadvantages to overcome in any football game. Home field and a raucous crowd to name a couple. But should a coin flip go that far to determine the outcome of a game.

I have always heard that if you are going to complain about something, you should always have a suggestion to make it better.

So here are my thoughts.

1) Give both teams a chance to score

If one team drives down and kicks a FG...the other must match that or better yet score a touchdown for the win. Alternate possessions until you get a winner.

2) Give each team the ball at the 50-yard line

Alternating possessions from the 50 till someone scores and stops the other team.

3) Adopt the college system

I know it would be a hard pill for the mighty NFL to swallow, but maybe the college system is better.

Anything would be better than what is in place now. To lose a game in overtime is heart breaking for any team, and their fans. But to lose without even getting a chance to touch the ball is a joke.

Am I preaching to the choir or do I have a valid point?

In my opinion, it's time for the system to change.

NFL fans let your voices be heard!

Georgia Tech-Georgia: A Role Reversal in November

November in the state of Georgia is one of my favorite months. Over the past decade, certain constants have elevated it above its fall counterparts.

November brings the meat of the college football season. Crunch time, make or break ball games. Normally high school playoffs start off my weekends, but, sadly, my local team finished strong after a slow start but didn’t make the postseason playoffs.

I may have to make a visit to the Georgia Dome for the championship games to get my high school playoff fix. But it just won't be the same.

For Georgia fans, November also brings a couple of great rivalry games. Georgia and Auburn battled two weekends ago. Georgia came away with the hard fought victory, 31-24. Georgia has now won four straight in the series for the first time since the 1940s.

Of course, with Thanksgiving just a few days away, it's time for turkey, dressing, and the Georgia-Georgia Tech football game. But, again, this November brings a change in "the normal."

In what has become a disappointing season for Georgia, they must now face a Tech team that is currently seventh in the BCS standings. Georgia is 6-5 after a complete collapse in the second half against Kentucky this past Saturday.

The Dawgs will be happy with a trip to the Music City Bowl or even a trip to Shreveport. The fans may be cursing Willie Martinez and Mike Bobo while traveling, but they will be there to cheer on the Dawgs, no matter what bowl game it turns out to be.

Tech on the other hand is an impressive 10-1 and headed to the ACC championship with its sights set on a BCS bowl game. Nesbitt, Dwyer, and company are in high gear.

My November has been completely turned upside down.

Tech coach Paul Johnson has brought a whole new attitude to North Avenue. Tech is playing with a lot of confidence this year. Offensively, the Jackets have been lighting up the scoreboard, averaging 36 points per game. Defensively they have struggled at times, but they always seem to adjust just enough to get the job done.

Georgia lost a multitude of talent when Matt Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, and Mohammed Massaquoi all exited Athens for the NFL. Offensively, the Dawgs have been inconsistent all season, which is understandable after losing that much talent.

But, defensively, the Dawgs have looked lost most of the year, giving up an average of 26.6 points per game. Since the Alabama lost last season, the Dawgs have allowed 34 or more points in 10 games. Seriously bad numbers!

Last season, an upset-minded Tech visited Athens. After a slow start in the first half, the Jackets rebounded to run all over Georgia in the second. Tech prevailed in a very exciting game, 45-42, and their fans have feasted on that win for 12 months.

Meanwhile, Georgia fans spend time reminiscing about the good old days, when Reggie Ball and Chan Gailey strolled the Tech sidelines. Oh, how I miss Reggie!

This season, it is the Dawgs who must think upset. Georgia is the big underdog in Atlanta. Tech fans are very confident they will win their second straight over their hated rival. Paul Johnson is the new flavor of the month, while Mark Richt is moving towards the proverbial hot seat.

While most Tech fans lack respect for the Georgia team and seem to be marking this one down as a victory before the opening kickoff, coach Paul Johnson and the Jackets know all too well what a loss could do for their season.

They won’t take the Dawgs lightly, even if their fans do. One Tech fan (his attitude is the extreme minority) told me, "I am always scared of Georgia. The Dawgs have more talent than anyone Tech has played this season."

A very true statement. I sure wish Georgia had played at that level all season.

If Tech wins, no one will be surprised. If Georgia upsets them, it will help ease the pain of what has been a very disappointing season.

Either way, as a Georgia fan I am ready to close the book on the 2009 season. The New Year will bring a new season, and, hopefully, a "normal" November come next fall.

In the new movie 2012, the world as we know it comes to an end. The Mayans had predicted this catastrophe hundreds of years earlier, but their predictions were ignored.

Interestingly enough, the Mayans also predicted that in 2009 Georgia would have an unusual season. They would reverse roles with their in-state rival, Georgia fans would panic, and many Tech fans would strut around with an air of confidence not seen in many decades on North Avenue.

However, the Mayans recorded that in 2010 things will return to normal.

Georgia will reclaim their top-10 spot in the polls and will contend for an SEC title. Tech will return to a secondary role in the ACC, and visit "a field of blue" during the bowl season (Boise?).

So, to all my Tech friends out there, I say enjoy this odd November while you can.

According to the Mayans, it won’t last. If you don’t like the ending, don’t blame me.

I’m just the messenger.

Bulldog Fans Mourn Sudden Death of UGA VII

The words my daughter spoke made me stop my car. She simply said, "Dad, UGA VII died?"

It was a question, not a comment. I stopped the car to take in what she had said.

"What? You must be reading something old. It said UGA VI not VII." But her reply only confirmed her initial comment.

She was surfing the net with the glorious piece of electronics known as the iPhone. Information at the touch of a screen. Updated 12 seconds earlier.

UGA VII had indeed passed away from a sudden heart attack.

Everyone in the car had the same thought.... I'm gonna cry!!

In a season of disappointment for Georgia fans, this may be the biggest slap in the face yet. To lose our beloved mascot at the young age of four is just enough to put many Dawg fans over the edge.

For those who do not understand the loss, just move on back to to the Quilty Pleasures Section of b/r and skip what is left of this article.

For those who love the Dawg nation, you understand what the feeling is tonight in Savannah, in Athens and all across this great state.

This is not just a mascot. This is OUR mascot. This is OUR Dawg!

Everyone wants a picture of UGA. Everyone wants to pet UGA or get a slobbery lick from the world's most loved mascot.

So many times I have made a detour on my way to section 337 in Sanford stadium to visit UGA underneath the bridge in Athens. A barricade is up at the rear of UGA owner Sonny Seiler's car just to keep the crowd back at a safe distance. I do mean a crowd. Young, old and middle age all line up for a picture or just to get a glimpse of America's most famous mascot.

I won't go into the details of telling you all about the history of the UGA line. When I introduced UGA VII to the b/r nation in my article, UGA VII The Legend Lives on at Georgia, I gave you some of the history behind this great mascot.

When UGA VII started his reign in Athens we all knew that he had some big shoes to fill. His dad, UGA VI was "bigger and badder" than those before him. He compiled an impressive record of 87-27 and won more games than any other UGA.

A pretty good job for an UGA that followed the most famous UGA of all time, UGA V. UGA V was a movie star (Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil), he was a cover boy (Sports Illustrated 1997), and no one will ever forget the picture of V attacking Auburn's Robert Baker.

UGA VII stepped in for his dad in August of 2008. Of all the UGA's, only his father weighed more than he did. Most UGA's are around for seven to ten seasons. That would not be the case for the latest in this great line of dawgs.

UGA VII was only able to give us the better part of two seasons. His record will stand at 16-7.

But he was much more than a record. He was not as active as his daddy was, but he was always in his place patrolling the sideline each and every Saturday. His reign as UGA is now the shortest reign in the history of the line. He will be missed.

To the Seiler family, the Bulldog nation once again must thank you. While we have lost a beloved mascot, you have lost a beloved family member. While we were thrilled to steal those moments watching UGA pace the sideline or posing for a picture, you spent every day with him, loving him as family.

"We are all in a state of shock," Sonny Seiler said. "We had no warning whatsoever."

Seiler's daughter Swan told the Atlanta Journal Constitution, "You can imagine, we are devastated.. He was such a sweet dog. This is a very hard day."

Burial information has not been released yet, but you can be assured that UGA VII will be laid to rest with his ancestors in Sanford Stadium.

Saturday the Dawgs will host Kentucky in their final home game for 2009. There will be no UGA patrolling the sidelines. Somehow I just don't think it will be the same. I am sure that many will spend moments glancing to the sideline where the UGA doghouse sits, then suddenly realizing VII isn't there.

The Seiler's hope to have a stand in ready for the Tech game. A process is in place for such a loss. No one was expecting it would be needed for an UGA so young.

I feel sure that there will be many tributes to UGA VII played on the video screen during the game. Hopefully the Dawgs will win one for UGA on Saturday.

So Bulldog fans this is just another blow in what has been a long season. Let's make sure that the Bulldog nation is loud and proud on Saturday night. Let's give the Dawgs all the support they need.

R.I.P UGA VII (served the Bulldog nation proudly, August 2008-November 2009).

The Georgia-Auburn Rivalry: Five Things We Love About It

When Georgia and Auburn meet on the field there is normally something big at stake. SEC titles, unbeaten records or just bragging rights... it doesn't take much to get the blood pumping for this one. This is the "South's Oldest Rivalry" and it has lived up to its billing more often than not.

We could write a book on this great rivalry. The games, the coaches, the players and the fans all hold an important part on making this rivalry one of the most talked about in the country.

If you haven't been fortunate enough to see some of these games, I'm truly sorry. You have missed out.

But take a few minutes here today and get ready for the 113th meeting tomorrow. The records do not matter. The standings mean nothing.

This is Auburn and Georgia. This is civil war. Brother vs brother, cousin vs cousin and neighbor vs neighbor.

It might just get ugly!
Begin Slideshow

GeorgiaDawg's Five Great Georgia Wins Over Georgia Tech

When you love to write about football, and your team is having a tough year, what do you do?

Well I say you focus on a few great wins in one of the greatest rivalries in the South. Georgia has played Georgia Tech 103 times. Georgia has won 59 of those games, and before Tech's win last season the rivalry had pretty much become one sided.

For Georgia fans they only need to look to the Florida series to understand how those on North Ave in Atlanta feel.

Since 1978, Georgia has won 23 of the 31 games played. Winning 74% of the time can really make your in state rival hate you.

But Tech has a new coach, and a new outlook. They remind us Georgia fans daily of their win last season. They are predicting another win this season, and many more to come with the new Paul Johnson regime.

Only time will tell us how the series unfolds over the next few years. But one thing is certain...history tells us of many great Georgia wins. I'm sure a Tech fan can tell you about many great Tech wins. I will leave that to one of them.

Today, I will give you five great Georgia wins over Georgia Tech. I hope all you Bulldogs enjoy reliving these great moments.

1) 1964: Georgia 7 Georgia Tech 0

This was Vince Dooley's first game against Tech. The Dawgs had lost three straight in the series and were ready for a win.

The only score of the game came when Tech's Jeff Davis fumbled at the Tech 22 late in the 3rd quarter. The Dawgs drove down to the Tech three, where quarterback Preston Ridlehuber took it in for the score.

Tech had a chance early in the 4th quarter when Tommy Jackson took a punt at his own 27 yard line and broke into the open. The only Dawg left in his way was the Georgia punter, Mack Faircloth. Faircloth made the tackle at the Georgia 34. Who said punter's can't tackle?

The defense took over from there and held the Jackets. Dawgs won 7-0.

Georgia went on to the Sun Bowl and beat Texas Tech 7-0. Dooley and the Dawgs finished the season 7-3-1.

2) 1968: Georgia 47 Georgia Tech 8

Georgia came into this one unbeaten with a record of 7-0-2, and ranked 4th in the nation. The Dawgs had already won the SEC title and were headed to the Sugar Bowl.

The win gave Georgia a five game win streak in the series for the first time. It was also the first time the Dawgs scored more than 40 points on Tech.

Georgia dominated this game from the start. The Dawgs accumulated 479 yards in total offense, to Tech's 164 yards. The Georgia defense held Tech to 2 yards rushing.

Georgia quarterback Mike Cavan threw for 194 yards and rushed for 208 more to lead the Dawgs on offense.

Many proclaimed this team to be the best Georgia team ever. But the Dawgs stumbled in the Sugar Bowl, losing to Arkansas 16-2.

The seniors from the 1968 season would leave Georgia with a 25-6-2 varsity record. They also never lost at Sanford Stadium.

3) 1976: Georgia 13 Georgia Tech 10

Georgia entered the game 9-1, ranked 4th in the nation. They were the SEC champs again, and were headed to the Sugar Bowl to play number one ranked Pittsburgh.

The Dawgs only loss came at the hands of the Ole Miss Rebels, losing 21-17. It was your classic let down loss. The Dawgs went in to the Ole Miss game coming off a 21-0 win over Alabama. The Dawgs were the first team to shut out the Tide in 70 games.

Georgia led Tech 7-0 at halftime. The weather made things messy in the second half.

After trading fumbles in the final minutes, it was Georgia that would get the break they needed. Tech fumbled at their own 34, giving the Dawgs the ball with the game tied at 10-10.

Al Pollard (24 carries for 112 yards) and Kevin McLee (30 carries for 105 yards) would help move the Dawgs down to within field goal range.

With nine seconds left on the clock, Alan Leavitt gave Georgia the win putting the game winner through the up rights.

Georgia finished the season 10-2 and ranked 10th in the country, after losing to the Pitt Panthers in the Sugar Bowl.

4) 1980: Georgia 38 Georgia Tech 20

This was the 75th meeting between these two teams. Georgia came into this one as the number one team in the country. They were also the only remaining unbeaten team in college football.

Georgia was coming off their miracle win in Jacksonville over the Gators, while Tech had just fought Notre Dame to a hard fought tie.

The Dawgs took the early lead on touchdowns from Herschel Walker, and a Buck Belue pass to Ronnie Stewart.

Tech got on the score board early in the third. During the celebration, one of the Tech players grabbed Scott Woerner and dragged him into the celebration. The "excessive" celebration drew a penalty from the officials.

With the penalty yardage and a very mad Scott Woerner returning the kick, the Dawgs answered back quickly. Woerner took the kick off and returned it 71 yards to the Tech 23. On the very next play it was Herschel doing the rest taking it in for the score.

Belue and Walker would tack on two more scores and the Dawgs put this one away. Perfect record still intact.

Walker finished with 205 yards and three touchdowns.

Georgia, of course, completed their season with a 17-10 win over Notre Dame. A perfect 12-0 record and a National Championship.

5) 2001: Georgia 31 Georgia Tech 17

Mark Richt took over the helm for the Dawgs in 2001. Tech had won three straight and once again the Dawgs were ready for a win. Sound familiar?

This one would belong to one of the smallest Dawgs on the field. Billy Bennett nailed four field goals in the first half, to give the Dawgs a 12-0 halftime lead.

Tech bounced back and took the lead 17-15. But David Greene to Fred Gibson for a 51 yard touchdown brought the Dawgs back, 21-17.

Tech made another run at a comeback but this time it was Tim Wansley spoiling the bid, when he intercepted George Godsey and returned the pick for a score.

Billy Bennett added two more field goals in the second half, for a total of six in the game.

Georgia finished Richt's first season 8-4, after losing to Boston College in the Music City Bowl. But most importantly the Dawgs beat the Jackets. They would continue that streak through 2007, winning seven straight in the series.

So there you have it. Just a few of my favorite wins over the Jackets. This list could go on and on. After all when you have 59 wins to choose from, its hard to pick just a few.

When you think about it, I could write a whole article on the Reggie Ball era...

For Georgia and QB Aaron Murray, the Future Should Be Now

This is really hard for me. I have been a supporter of Joe Cox all season long. I was glad that we had Joe to step in when Matthew Stafford left for the NFL. I believed that Joe would step in and lead this team to nine, maybe even ten wins.

I do not believe that you can lay all of the problems with the 2009 version of the Georgia Bulldogs at the feet of Joe Cox. Joe has been a big reason that we have four wins. Unfortunately, he has also contributed to the four losses.

The numbers show a slow and steady decline since the shootouts with South Carolina and Arkansas. The 12 interceptions are unacceptable. The 57% completion percentage should be better.

For what ever the reason, Joe has not got the job done when we needed him the most.

The running game, the offensive line, the curious play calling have all played a part in turning this offensive into a very average one. Without AJ Green it is conceivable that the Dawgs could easily be 1-7 right now.

Yesterday, Mark Richt announced at his weekly press conference that Joe Cox is still the starting quarterback for Georgia. Richt stated, "It was unanimous among our staff that Joe gives us the best chance to win, and that's where our focus needs to be," Richt said. "There's still a lot of football left this season. We tell our players to finish the drill, and we are committed to doing that this week and each week the remainder of the season.

"We have faith in Joe that he gives us the best opportunity to do that. At the same time, we do plan on Logan Gray getting some playing time this weekend at quarterback."

To some degree I can understand what Coach Richt is saying. Joe is the veteran, and he can lead us best through these remaining four games.

Would a move to a freshman be fair to the seniors? Or they forfeited the right to complain since they have not exactly over whelmed us with their talent this season.

What about the juniors, and sophomores? Do we start next season again with a quarterback that has little or no game experience in the SEC?

If anyone reading this believes that Logan Gray is the answer for next season, I would ask you to log off and go watch a replay of what Logan did in his brief mop up role on Saturday.

Does the phrase, “deer in the headlights” come to mind?

I realize that the coaching staff has not really put Logan into types of situation where he could easily succeed. But does anyone really think that if Logan Gray was the answer for 2010, he would still be fair catching punts?

I am sure Logan Gray is a great teammate, and he is obviously a team player.

I don’t mean to sound harsh, but if he doesn’t realize that he will never be the starting quarterback for Georgia by now, someone should tell him. Thanks Logan for all your loyalty.

Now, go practice with the punt team. That leads us to what should happen.

The problem with Joe Cox right now, is that he is not really doing anything statistically that would be head and shoulders above what Aaron Murray could do.

Joe Tereshinski lost his starting job to Matthew Stafford. Joe was a leader, he was a great teammate. He did whatever the coaches asked him to do.

He sat down, and Matt Stafford took over. That added game experience gave Stafford a head start for the following season.

Is this situation really any different? If Aaron Murray is the future, then let’s get a head start on the future.

As a junior at Plant High School in Tampa, Murray threw for over 4,000 yards and 51 touchdowns. He also rushed for 932 yards and 12 touchdowns.

In his senior year, Murray went down with a broken fibula early in the season. He still managed to throw for over 1,900 yards and 33 touchdowns. He returned for the state championship game and led his team to the win, throwing for 344 yards and three touchdowns.

In those two seasons he threw only 11 interceptions total. He led his team to two state titles. Aaron Murray can handle on the job training. His training needs to start now, not next season.

It's time for Joe to walk off the field as the starter. Thank you Joe, you gave it all you had.

To Coach Richt I say; if Aaron Murray is the future, please let the future begin now.

Georgia vs. Florida: A Look Back at This Great Rivalry

The "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" will take place again this coming Saturday in Jacksonville. The Dawgs and the Gators will renew a rivalry that dates back to 1904.

The Gators are the heavy favorite again this season. They are also the number one team in the nation.

If you are a Dawg fan you are thinking, sounds like a great time for an upset.

Of course, to hear the Gator nation speak, the Dawgs don't even belong on the same field with Tim Tebow and his pals. Urban Meyer is busy this week, reminding his team how the Bulldogs disrespected them in 2007.

Not since John Travolta took to the floor in Saturday Night Fever has one dance caused such a stir.

But amidst all of the talk, remembering the dance, and the late timeouts by Urban Meyer last season, it is easy to forget what this series is all about.

Many Florida fans talk as though they have dominated Georgia forever. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, Georgia dominated this series at one time just as shockingly, if not more so, as Florida has done in the past two decades.

So since we all know what goes around does indeed come around, let's look back on a little Georgia vs. Florida history.

The Rivalry: 1904 - 1989

This rivalry began in 1904. The two teams would battle on the playing field five times between 1904 and 1920.

Georgia won that first game, 52-0. There is no truth to the rumor that the Georgia coach at the time said he "wanted to hang half a hundred" on the Gators.

Georgia won all five of those first meetings, outscoring the Gators in the process, 184-0. The Dawgs won again in 1926 and 1927. The Gators did finally get on the scoreboard in the sixth game, losing 32-9.

If you are keeping track, Georgia outscored the Gators, 243-9, in those first seven meetings. It doesn't sound like Gatorade had been invented at this point.

Florida finally got back-to-back wins in 1928 and 1929, and in 1930 the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

In the decades of the thirties and forties, Georgia continued to dominate, winning 16 of 19 games. After 29 games, Georgia led the series, 23-5-1.

If Al Gore had invented the Internet at this point, can you imagine what all the sports vents would have looked like? Can you imagine the outrage from the Gator faithful?

Florida's first success in the series came in the decades of the fifties and sixties. The Gators won 13 of the 20 games played. The second tie in the series also occurred.

But Georgia was not ready to let Florida take control just yet.

Vince Dooley and his junkyard Dawgs ruled the seventies and the eighties. Dooley won 15 out of 20 against Florida. There is also no truth to the rumor that in one of the Florida wins, Dooley complained about a late time out, saying, "that's not right and I can assure you that Vince Dooley will not forget this moment."

In 1980, the Dawgs' comeback win against the Gators is considered by many to be one of the greatest of all time. Buck Belue to Lindsey Scott will forever be remembered in Georgia football history as "the play."

While Tim Tebow has certainly dominated college football the past three years, Herschel Walker dominated the scene in the early eighties.

Walker's numbers against the Gators alone might qualify him as a Heisman candidate. Georgia won all three games against the Gators while Herschel was in Athens. Walker put up huge rushing numbers (238, 192, and 219) in those three games, scoring eight rushing touchdowns in the process.

With Georgia's uncertainty at running back these days, I wonder if we could get Herschel cleared for one more year of eligibility? Probably not.

But of course, all good things must end. The eighties came to a close, with Georgia dominating the series, 43-22-2.

Not many Gators want to talk about their football history prior to 1990...now you know why. But turn the page, because things do change.

The Rivalry: 1990 - Present

The University of Florida hired Steve Spurrier in late 1989 as their head football coach. Florida football would change on that day. Gator fans had no idea just how much it would change.

Unfortunately, the Georgia-Florida rivalry also changed.

The visor, the "Swamp," "Free Shoes University," "Ray Goof"—the list goes on and on. Steve Spurrier made his mark on Florida. He also pushed every button an opposing team or head coach had.

Ray Goff replied publicly to the "Ray Goof" comment: "He's a good coach, but I'd like to run into him some night down a dark alley."

Florida fans loved the man who brought winning football to Florida.

Against Georgia, win is what he did. Spurrier won 11 of 12 games against the Dawgs while he was at Florida. Dominating the Dawgs just as Dooley had once dominated the Gators.

When Spurrier stepped down after the 2001 season, Dawg fans celebrated. Unfortunately, the trend continued without Spurrier.

Many Georgia fans hoped that Mark Richt could turn this thing around. So far that has not happened. Richt is 2-6 against the Gators.

The future of this rivalry may be just as interesting as the past. A new page will be added this week.

When the Dawgs and Gators meet again this Saturday, it will be the 88th meeting in this rivalry.

Yes, the Dawgs do still hold the advantage in the series, 47-38-2. But everyone knows the Gators hold the momentum.

Georgia has lost 16 of the last 19 in the series. Mark Richt knows it, Urban Meyer knows it, and most of college football knows it.

Motivation? It shouldn't take much. No celebration is needed. No build up necessary.

This is Georgia and Florida, simply one of the greatest rivalries in college football.

SEC Officiating: Five Ways To Make It Better

For the second time in three weeks the SEC has found it necessary to step forward and admit that one of their officiating crews blew a call. Of course as usual, we all knew it was coming.

We also know that officiating is not a perfect science. Mistakes will be made and calls will be missed. Instant replay, officials watching from on high, five minute huddles to talk about what they just saw...nothing seems to help.

Do we want perfection? I say no, perfection is not needed.

But if the SEC is willing to proclaim itself the best conference in college football, then their officiating crews should live up to that standard as well.

Much was made of the blown "celebration" penalty that was called on AJ Green when Georgia lost to LSU on October 3rd. It was obvious to everyone on the field, everyone in the stands and all of those watching from home that AJ Green had done nothing "excessive."

Everyone that is, except for Marc Curles and his crew.

The SEC agreed with everyone that was not wearing zebra stripes and admitted the crew blew the call.

Flash forward two weeks. Arkansas is playing Florida in "the Swamp", and an upset is in the making. Arkansas appears to have the momentum.

In college football, momentum can be everything, especially in the fourth quarter.

Once again on a national TV stage, Marc Curles and his crew became the focus of the game.

What looked to be a bad pass interference call, a very generous spot for Tim Tebow on a short run, and a extremely questionable personal foul call all went against Bobby Petrino and his Razorbacks in the fourth quarter.

I'm sure you know the rest of the story. Florida wins the game and Arkansas is left to wonder what if...

The personal foul call that went against Arkansas lineman Malcolm Sheppard was one of the worst calls I have seen this year. Sheppard basically was protecting himself against a hard charging Florida lineman. He turned just in time to see him coming and a collision occurred.

Sheppard won the collision. A flag was thrown.

Is this football the SEC is playing? Is this not a contact sport?

As a Georgia fan, I can feel the pain of any Arkansas fan who read the latest apology from the SEC. Too little, too late.

So back up to the microphone steps another SEC executive. This time they did at least take action. I must give them credit for that.

Curles and his crew have been suspended. In my opinion they should take the rest of the season off.

Slive made the following comments to the media:

"A series of calls that have occurred during the last several weeks have not been to the standard that we expect from our officiating crews.

"I believe our officiating program is the best in the country; however, there are times when these actions must be taken."

All I can say Mike is I'm glad you believe that...because I sure don't. Have you watched a Penn Wagers game lately? I groan every time I hear his name announced at a Georgia game.

Actually Mike, I think you guys need to revamp the program. I have a couple of suggestions.

Please read through them and feel free to use any that may help your program.

So, here you go.

1) Don't call a penalty when you "think" you see something.

Think "no blood, no foul" if you will. If you have to stand around in a huddle for five minutes and discuss it, then there is a good chance you are not sure. Only call a penalty when you actually see it.

2) A celebration, by definition is not taunting.

We can call this the AJ Green rule. But looking into the stands is not taunting. Please redefine this absurd rule. Please make sure taunting is penalized, but celebrating is not.

If the whole team runs on the field, I would say throw the flag. That is slightly excessive... and yes, we can call that the Georgia rule.

3) Reminder: These are college kids playing a game.

Remember what it was like to be in college? These kids are playing a game, they are not professionals. They may say or do something stupid, but unless it effects the game, don't penalize them. Let them play!

4) Florida, LSU and Alabama don't need help.

I hate to say this, but it really looks like you guys don't want certain teams to lose. I mean some of these late calls that go against the underdogs are really questionable. I'm not suggesting any conspiracy, but please call it both ways.

Tim Tebow will not come after you when the game is over. Nick Saban won't call your boss because you didn't call it his way. These teams are really good. They don't need an advantage.

5) The fans are not watching the game to see YOU!!

Just being honest here. I wish I had never heard the name Marc Curles, or Penn Wagers. I don't care who you guys are. We do not want to see you on television. We want to watch the game.

So if you have an ego, and you like seeing your face on the tube, then please apply for a local TV job. Don't get your "face" time during our college football.

I really hope this helps. I have stated several times in the past few year or so that it appears to me the officiating is getting worse, not better.

So Mike Slive it's up to you.

If the SEC is indeed the best conference in the land, you must ensure that the officials are also the best in the country. Do it now, before another crew sends you to the podium on Monday.

Open Letter to the Georgia Bulldog Nation: Be Careful What You Wish For

I would like to take a moment today to address the Georgia Bulldog nation. Unlike President Obama, I do not try to speak to our nation very often. But here we are at the mid-point of the season, the Dawgs are 3-3, and the nation is in a state of unrest.

So if you will indulge me for just a few minutes, I would like to speak directly to all of the Bulldog fans who frequent Bleacher Report.

First of all, let me say that I am not here to defend mediocrity. I state in my weekly column in our local newspaper (click this link if you would like to check it out) that a record of 3-3 should be considered “Ray Goff numbers.”

Not since Jim Donnan’s first year, when he began to clean up the mess that Goff made, have the Dawgs started the season 3-3. That was 1996. Those are days we want to forget.

Donnan had a decent run, but he failed to beat Georgia Tech for three consecutive years. Two straight four-loss seasons would end his short run at the University of Georgia.

That of course is when Mark Richt came to town. I have never doubted since that day that Mark Richt would succeed at Georgia. I would have voted then and there to give him a lifetime contract.

Eight-and-a-half seasons have passed since that day. Richt has led the Bulldogs to 85 wins. The Dawgs have won two SEC championships, and finished in the top 10 in most of those seasons.

Mark Richt set the bar high at Georgia.

It was last season when I really noticed the rumbling beginning in the Bulldog nation. I’m not exactly sure when it started, but a "fire Mark Richt" Web site surfaced. What started as a season with National Championship hopes soon turned to disappointment.

The Dawgs laid the proverbial egg against Alabama and again against Florida. Against Georgia Tech the Dawgs blew a 28-12 halftime lead, and would lose to their intrastate rival for the first time since 2000.

Two culprits emerged from those three losses—the defense (mainly the defensive coordinator) and several key injuries. Injuries you really can’t control. But a defense not executing to its level of ability should be something you can fix.

So the majority of the Dawg Nation took the bowl win over Michigan State and the 10-3 record the Dawgs finished with and patiently waited for a few changes.

It’s very difficult for me to call loyalty a bad trait. After all, don’t we teach our kids to be loyal?

But college football is not only a passion; it is big, big business. When you don’t make a change in your "business" that everyone seems to think is needed, you will get questioned.

When that same change you failed to make continues to come back to haunt you, it quickly becomes a burden and a potential point of failure.

Willie Martinez has now officially become a burden for Mark Richt. Willie knows it. Mark Richt knows it. The Bulldog nation knows it.

Any further loyalty to Martinez beyond the next six games could damage Richt’s future at Georgia.

When Brian Van Gorder patrolled the sidelines as Georgia’s defensive coordinator, the Dawgs allowed their opponents to score more than 33 points only one time.

Since the beginning of the 2008 season, Willie Martinez and his soft cover zone defense has been torched for: 37, 41, 45, 45, 38, 39, 38, and 41 points. Georgia has played 19 games in that time span. In eight of those games, 37 or more points were given up.

I promised to be brief, so let me wrap it up with a few final thoughts.

To the Bulldog nation I say this: We are all disappointed in what has happened this season. But I believe that no one is more disappointed than Mark Richt.

I am confident beyond words that Mark Richt will make the changes needed. I don’t believe midseason is the time to make those changes. It appears obvious, to this writer, where those changes need to be made.

But firing Mark Richt is not the answer. How many programs in this country would not happily take this man off our hands? Five? Maybe 10?

The Bulldog nation needs to step back and take a deep breath. We need to get behind the players and scream and cheer as we never have before beginning this week in Vanderbilt.

The talent at Georgia is young and plentiful. We tried to convince ourselves that this would not be a down year. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that maybe, just maybe, we are not who we thought we were.

Sure, Georgia Tech is off to a good start, and yes, they beat the Dawgs last season. But would you trade places with your average Tech fan, and his pocket protected friends? Having one or two good seasons a decade? Of course not.

I am not convinced that this season is lost. But no matter what the outcome in these remaining games, I am convinced that Mark Richt is the man for Georgia.

Most programs are one bad decision away from going through "Ray Goff years." Most of the time, patience will pay off and common sense will take you far.

Be careful what you wish for, Bulldog nation. Mark Richt has taken us to a new level. To lose faith in him the first time he falters, or fails to live up to our expectations, would be a mistake.

I hope you are with me, Bulldog nation. Let’s pull together and support this team like never before.

Never forget those simple words: "It's great to be a Georgia Bulldog."

Georgia Vs Tennessee: Time To Squeeze The Big Orange

This just in... The SEC has picked up the flag, and the excessive celebration penalty has been waved off. Only, symbolically of course.

So Georgia must now move on. They must move on from one of the toughest emotional defeats they have faced in quite some time.

Can they do it? Can they travel to Knoxville, take on the Vols in front of 100,00 people, and put last weekend's tough loss behind them?

If they want to win this coming Saturday in Neyland Stadium, they certainly better.

To put it mildly, the Dawgs have been very inconsistent this season.

A Jekyll and Hyde defense, and an offense that lacks a running game can make for a very long season. However, all is not lost.

Much of the inconsistency comes from the youth that we see at many of the positions we are struggling at. Experience gained this year will be big next season. The Dawgs still have much to play for. A win this week and a win next week at Vanderbilt sets up a showdown in Jacksonville against the Gators.

Stranger things have happened, so don't laugh.

But, first things first.

Can we go to Knoxville and win? Here are three things I believe the Dawgs must focus on if they are to be successful on Saturday.

1) We must find our running game

Richard Samuel, Carlton Thomas, and Caleb King have all had enough playing time to prove themselves. Samuel is young and seems tentative at times. Thomas, while fast, does not seem to possess the power needed to consistently succeed in the SEC. King has been injured, and now we find that he cracked his lower jaw in the game against LSU.

While I still believe Samuel can be productive, it appears that King may spend his career at Georgia injured.

That leaves us with one choice.

Washaun Ealey ran with purpose against LSU. He hit the hole hard and continued to drive his legs until he hit the turf. He looked strong and fast. He seems to have great vision on the field.

So is he the answer?

As a kid, I can remember listening to Larry Munson call a game one Saturday night in Knoxville. He told us of a freshman that was "running over people." It only seems fitting that Ealey have a break out game against the Vols in Knoxville.

Of course, I'm not saying that Ealey is the next Herschel Walker. But after looking at our rushing stats from the past two weeks, I see no reason to not give him a chance.

So I say, do it. Give Ealey a chance, and do it now.

2) Michael Moore and Tavarres King need to be more involved

With Eric Berry lurking over AJ Green's shoulder, it will be extremely important that Joe Cox look for, and find, other targets.

Orson Charles should be one of them. But I want to see Michael Moore involved in the offense, again. He has basically vanished for the past two weeks.

AJ Green is without a doubt one of the greatest receivers to ever play at the University of Georgia, and he is just a sophomore. The Vols will focus on AJ and try to limit his catches. They may succeed, but we all know that with AJ that can be easier said than done.

So, Bobo and Cox will need to find a way to get Moore and yes, Tavarres King back into the mix. If Cox continues to throw into double and triple coverage, trying to get the ball to AJ, someone will make us pay.

With Eric Berry on the field, the Vols could very well be that team.

3) Get to Crompton early and often

Driving home from Athens on Saturday night, I listened to the Vols play Auburn on my XM radio. With each errant throw, with each dropped pass, the tension in the voice of those "homer" announcers became more pronounced.

Vol bulletin boards and talk shows have been ringing for weeks with the talk of Crompton becoming Land Kiffen's scape goat for this season.

Most chuckle at such talk, but the fact of the matter is, Crompton may be the worst quarterback in the SEC this season.

Georgia at times has made bad quarterbacks look really, really good.

If Georgia is to win Saturday, they must make life miserable for Crompton. He needs to get hit every time he throws the ball. He needs to get planted into the Neyland Stadium turf five or six times.

We need to make him cry.

The Vols have weapons and they are very capable of winning this game. Their defense will keep it close, but they win or lose on what Georgia allows Jonathon Crompton to do.

So the stage is set. Both teams come into this one unranked. That has not been the case in this series since the 1930's.

Relegated to the SEC network and a 12:30 kickoff, the Dawgs and Vols will renew what has become a great southern rivalry.

I hope my ride home from Knoxville is more enjoyable than last week's ride home from Athens.

Georgia Bulldog Football: Three Grades That Need To Be Improved

We are four games into the 2009 season and many questions still remain for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Will the defense find the right combinations in the secondary? Will we ever get pressure on a quarterback again? Is it really Willie Martinez’s scheme or do we just have a bunch of undisciplined defensive players?

I read a statistic recently that seemed to scream out at me from the page. While at UGA, former defensive coordinator Brian Van Gorder’s defense gave up 33 or more points on one occasion.

In the past nine games (prior to the Arizona State game), the Georgia defense under Martinez gave up an average of 33 points per game. Sorry Willie, but that is not Georgia football.

But problems are not exclusive to the defense. The offense, despite scoring 113 points in the last three games, has a few problems of their own.

Fortunately for the Dawg nation, Joe Cox ignored your whines and growls after a mediocre game one. Joe is doing his part, and is not on the list of problems we are looking at today.

However, I am disappointed in three things from the offensive side of the ball. Here are my grades for those three areas. See if you agree, and let’s fix these problems.

1) The Offensive line: C-

Several weeks back I posted an article about this group of offensive lineman. I was really excited that they were experienced, and healthy. That has not been the case at the University of Georgia lately. Lack of depth and injury, have hurt this unit for many seasons.

If you would like to review that article you can find it by following this link.

So far this season, this group has been inconsistent. They have had their moments, but we expected better, much better.

Against Arkansas, Richard Samuel went 80 yards for a TD. The hole opened up by the line, was big enough to drive a Ford pickup through. Last week, Georgia couldn’t convert on third and short, and on fourth and short.

Joe Cox is not the tallest quarterback. So a nice solid pocket is essential for his continued success. Given time, Joe will find the open man, and most likely get the ball to him. The line must protect our quarterback. The pass protection at times has been stellar. It needs to be that way every week.

The loss of Trinton Sturdivant for the second consecutive year hurts. But this group is talented enough to make up for the loss.

If the line does its job and rises to the opportunity, Georgia could suddenly find itself in a very good place.

2) The running backs: C+

I expected Richard Samuel to step up and be the man at the running back position. Richard has certainly showed glimpses of what he can do. When he gets to the open field he can be explosive.

He runs hard at times, refusing to go down. But at times he seems to get tripped up with minimal contact. Are the holes there? Is not seeing the hole? Is it just timing? Who is to blame for the inconsistent play? The jury is still out. But personally, I think he will improve as the season rolls on.

Caleb King has begun to emerge as a threat as well. While Samuel (average 4.5 ypc) is more of a down hill runner, King (average 5.1 ypc) has shown the ability to get to the corner and make the first tackler miss. His emergence can do nothing but help the Georgia running game.

It seems obvious that these two will split the majority of the carries as the season goes on. The pace of the game and their effectiveness will dictate who is on the field.

It will also come down to who can hold on to the ball. Samuel has fumbled on several occasions, and King fumbled Saturday night against Arizona State at a crucial point in the game.

They can get better, and I think they will.

3) Mike Bobo and the play calling: Incomplete

Ok, so maybe incomplete is not really a grade. At times I have thought, brilliant, great call. Other times, I have scratched my head and thought what is he thinking?

But here is the problem in one word: predictable

Branden Smith comes on to the field, what will the Dawgs do on offense?

On third, or fourth and short with two fullbacks lined up in the backfield, who will get the ball?

If you have watched many Georgia games this year, you know the answer to these questions.

On fourth and short against Arizona, everyone in the stadium and everyone watching on TV, knew the fullback would get the ball. The results were predictable as well. Stuffed at the line... I guess Arizona State knew as well.

Mike Bobo seems to get stuck on one or two plays that succeed when he first uses them. If they work once, then they will work over and over again… right?

If I can sit in my seat and call the play 75% of the time, I am relatively sure the opposing defensive coordinator can do the same. When Mike Bobo took over the play calling at Georgia, I thought it was the right move. Now, I am not so sure.

Fortunately for Georgia, this is a problem that can be fixed. I hope we figure out the answers before LSU comes to town this week. If we don’t, it could very well be a long night in Athens.

So what do you think of these grades? What would you change?

I’m sure we would agree that these grades can all be improved.

I hope, for the sake of the Dawg nation, that is what happens.

Bulldogs' Joe Cox and AJ Green Ready For Prime Time Against Arkansas

The last time Georgia and Arkansas got together on the football field it was 2005. That game was played in Athens, and Georgia won 23-20.

There is not a lot of history in this series. Georgia leads all-time 8-3, and the Dawgs have won five straight in the series.

What most consider the biggest game in the short history of this series was the Georgia 30-3 win over the Razorbacks in the 2002 SEC championship game.

That game was not close.

This Saturday in Fayetteville will be no different.

Despite having a new and improved high-octane passing game, the Razorbacks have little in the secondary. While Bobby Petrino may be scheming as to how to beat the Dawgs through the air, it will be the Dawgs who will do damage with the passing game on Saturday.

I hate to spoil it for all you Dawg fans out there. I also hate to ruin it for the "Hawg" fans who expect their team to beat the Dawgs and avoid the "upset."

But it's just not going to happen. Here are three reasons why.

1) Joe Cox to AJ Green

This isn't really much of a stretch. Unless you have missed the past 15 or so Georgia games, you know all about AJ Green.

Green looked like the All-SEC receiver that he is this past Saturday. Obviously the most dangerous weapon on the field for the Dawgs, he may very well be the best receiver in the country.

Joe Cox knew that long before the season started. Against South Carolina, Cox found Green repeatedly.

Arkansas' defensive backs are not the team's strength on that side of the ball. In fact, they are a glaring weakness.

While I would love to see the Dawgs play smash-mouth football and run the ball down the collective throat of Bobby Petrino and company, something tells me the Joe Cox to AJ Green show will be in prime time this Saturday night.

Look for Cox to hit the 300 yard mark. AJ will account for over 100 of those.

2) Big Ryan Mallett

Ryan Mallett is a big boy. He stands 6'7" and weighs 238 pounds.

In their first two games the Dawgs chased Steven Garcia and Zac Robinson all over the field. Minimal success was the result.

In Fayetteville on Saturday night, the Dawgs won't have to look very much to find Mallett. He will be in the pocket, and he will be a stationary target for the most part.

Justin Houston will be back at defensive end for Georgia. He is quick and fast and should help put some pressure on Mallett.

If the line can't put sufficient pressure on Mallett, look for Martinez to send the linebackers.

Pressure will come.

Sacks will follow.

Mistakes will happen.

I will be shocked if the Dawgs leave Arkansas without at least two interceptions and one fumble recovery.

Yes, the Dawgs will win the turnover battle.

3) The Brandon and Branden show (Act Two)

Brandon Smith is a freshman. Branden Boykin is a sophomore. If you are a Georgia fan and that doesn't get you excited, please have the person next to you check your pulse.

These two young men really sparked the Dawgs last week against the Gamecocks.

Youthful and careless mistakes have reared their heads on several occasions, but the speed and excitement these two guys bring to the field is unquestioned.

Boykin's 100-yard kick return for a score, and Smith's 61-yard run on a reverse for a score are highlight film material for years to come.

The biggest problem with these two guys is how to get them the ball more.

With a big SEC game behind them, I look for these guys to really shine this week on the road in Fayetteville.

A touchdown a week from either one of these guys may become the norm before the season ends.

Final Observations

Richard Samuel ran hard against the Gamecocks and looked as though he could break a long run at any time.

The addition of Caleb King into the rotation will hopefully give the Dawgs that change of pace that they have lacked with Carlton Thomas.

These freshmen are good. The future looks bright in Athens.

Final score: Georgia 31, Arkansas 17

South Carolina-Georgia: The Crowd, Joe Cox, and a Drunk

The Crowd

Saturday night in Athens is a great place to be when the Dawgs are winning. When you can gather with 92,746 fans to watch a football game you have to feel like you are a really lucky guy or gal.

This past Saturday night was no different. The South Carolina Gamecocks came to call, and the Dawgs were ready for a defensive battle.

Funny thing happened on the way to that defensive battle.

South Carolina was coming off a 7-3 win over NC State, while the Dawgs limped back to Athens after losing to Oklahoma State, 24-10.

Both teams appeared to have many question marks on offense. The defenses looked pretty solid for both teams. So how on Earth did these two teams put up a total of 78 points?

That, my friend, is why we love college football. What appears to be a weakness one week can turn into a strength the next.

An underachieving player last week all of a sudden comes up big when his team needs him most. The roar of the home crowd sparks the defense. It happens every week.

I was proud to be part of the Sanford Stadium crowd on Saturday night. Sometimes we forget just how loud that place can be.

The crowd is a great barometer. You can always tell when the home team is doing well, or when the officials make a bad call.

Is it just me or does it seem like the officials are calling anything and everything these days?

The student section was tremendous Saturday night. They were loud from the opening kickoff. Oh, to be young again.

In the fourth quarter, as the Gamecocks looked to steal a victory, the noise became deafening. When Rennie Curran deflected Steven Garcia’s final pass, it felt as though the stadium shook.

It was great to be a Georgia Bulldog as time expired.

Joe Cox

I stated last week in my preview of the game ("Georgia Looks to Get Offensive"), that I believed Joe Cox, take two, would be much better.

I was quick to point out that I did not think Joe C would set the world on fire against the Gamecocks. But I did believe that Cox would lead the team, make some plays, and limit the mistakes.

Yes, he did throw a pick six that sure made things interesting. But he also completed 70 percent of his passes and threw for two touchdowns.

AJ Green gave Joe a great target to throw to. Richard Samuel kept the Gamecocks honest with 65 hard yards on the ground. The offensive line played much better in my opinion, but I still think they can play better.

When all was said and done, it was a solid performance from Joe C and the offense.

Take two was indeed much improved. Let’s hope take three is even better.

The Drunk

Seldom have I had to watch a game while ignoring a drunk. But Saturday night also seems to bring out the worst in people.

To make matters worse, the drunk just happened to be a Gamecocks fan. This is no reflection on the fans that came down to Athens from Columbia. I’m sure there were many drunk Dawg fans in attendance as well.

This drunk also just happened to be a 20-something young woman. Sad that this is how she chose to spend her pregame.

I tried to watch the game as I dodged her feet when she jumped up and down. I had to duck when she was swinging her arms wildly, cheering for her team. I had to hold my breath when she would turn to me and ask repeatedly, “Do you mind if we cheer for the Cocks?” Or, “You can talk smack to us, we don’t care.”

No, I don’t want to talk smack. I just want to watch the game.

These and other morsels were repeated no less than 50 to 100 times in the first quarter alone.

Thankfully as the game progressed she slowly started to sober up. We found out that she had been in South Carolina for a year, and she was originally from New York.

Apparently she couldn’t count while drunk. She also asked repeatedly how many scores they were down when the Gamecocks trailed 38-23.

Her friends apologized repeatedly. She cussed Steve Spurrier like a sailor. What a lovely girl.

I sat in someone else’s seats for this game. That was a bad decision. When Arizona State comes to town in two weeks, I will be back in my own seats.

Georgia Bulldogs-South Carolina Gamecocks: Dawgs Look To Get Offensive

The plane ride home from Stillwater must have seemed like a 20 hour flight to Georgia quarterback Joe Cox.

The Dawgs left Stillwater on Saturday with just as many questions as they came with.

The biggest unanswered question was simply this...

Can Joe Cox effectively lead this Bulldog offense?

As Georgia prepares for this week's SEC opener against the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Dawg Nation sits, waits, and debates on the answer to that question.

The Dawgs and Gamecocks will meet in Athens on Saturday. Both teams are coming off less than stellar performances. Both teams are also looking for some offense.

The Gamecocks got the win in their first game of 2009. A victory over NC State may not have been a pretty one, but a victory it was.

Oh how Georgia would have loved to have won ugly on Saturday. Instead, Georgia just lost ugly.

I won't recap those two games. By now, you have seen several dozen recaps on this website.

But I do think we can look at the results of those two games and by doing so, know what to expect on Saturday.

Who will win this match-up?

I believe the Dawgs will prevail (shocking, I know) in Athens and wring the necks of those pesky Gamecocks.

But if that is to happen, I believe Georgia will need to make sure these three things take place.

1) Georgia's Defense must continue it's resurgence.

Several big plays, by several big time players, hurt Georgia in Stillwater. The Gamecocks, however, do not have those big time players.

Try as he might, the "old ball coach" has not been able to bring big time offensive football to Columbia. That is unless you consider a 7-3 victory over NC State an offensive explosion.

Steven Garcia threw for only 148 yards against the Wolfpack, getting sacked three times in the process. The ground attack was led last week by Brian Maddox who ran for 73 yards, at only a 2.9 yards per carry average.

This week should prove much more challenging for Garcia, Maddox and company.

The Dawg defense showed signs of life last week. They are still missing that corner pass rush, and must finish the drill when it comes to interception opportunities.

I look for Georgia to sack Garcia several times. I also look for the Dawgs to come up with the first turnovers of the season.

2) Joe Cox, 5th year senior quarterback, take two

The Dawg Nation is grumbling this week. Joe C or Joe T? Joe T IV?

Well sorry to disappoint, but I am not buying into the demise of Joe Cox just yet.

Cox did look weak last week (maybe it was the aftermath of the flu).

He looked indecisive. When he did make a decision, it was the wrong one. He missed wide open receivers, and failed to find the open man on many occasions.

Joe Cox is not Matt Stafford. We all know that. But he is no Joe T either.

Joe Cox will rebound this week against a very tough defense. He will not light up the Gamecocks for 300 yards passing, but he will make us forget about last week.

He will lead, he will take charge, and he will shut up the critics for at least awhile longer.

Let's not forget that it was Joe Cox who came off the bench in 2006 to lead the Dawgs to victory over Colorado.

It was Matt Stafford he replaced. Many in the Dawg Nation spent the next week calling for Joe C to be the starter.

Richt didn't listen then, and I hope (at least for a few more weeks) he doesn't now.

3) Georgia's offensive line will remind us just how physical they can be

A few weeks ago I decided to give these guys (check out my preview of the UGA Offensvie Line) there props.

They are big. They are experienced. They can be physical and nasty.

So what happened last week?

Mark Richt said it best this week, when he stated that (I paraphrase here) "at times the offensive line played real good, but they know that they can play great."

The offensive line must become a force this week. They must remain a force for the remainder of this season.

They need to make sure that Joe Cox doesn't get touched.

They need to make sure that the holes they open for Richard Samuel, Carlton Thomas, Caleb King and whoever else gets that ball, are big enough to drive a truck through.

They need to play some smash mouth football.

Now don't get me wrong. I realize that South Carolina has a great defense. They always play Georgia tough.

In Athens or in Columbia, this game always seems to come down to the wire. South Carolina is certainly capable of coming to Athens and winning.

In four of the past five years, this game has been decided by single digits (four, two, four, and seven). That one exception was in 2006, when Georgia won 18-0 in Columbia.

This one may very well come down to single digits as well. But for some reason, I just don't think the Gamecocks have the offense to score on Georgia.

The Dawgs on the other hand have a lot to prove offensively. They are also at home. Joe Cox will be on a mission this week. The Dawg Nation will be happy to watch him succeed.

If Joe can do his thing, and the Dawgs can solve their turnover problems and protect the ball it will be a long night for the "old ball coach."

Final Score: Georgia 20 South Carolina 6

Three Plays That Sealed the Fate of the Georgia Bulldogs in Stillwater

Congratulations to the Oklahoma State Cowboys. They did what many believed they would not do. Despite their offense not firing on all cylinders, they managed to come up with the big plays when they needed them.

Georgia on the other hand could not.

After a great opening drive to start the game, the Dawg's offense vanished in front of 50,000 plus in Stillwater.

Obviously as a Dawg fan I am very disappointed at the outcome of Saturday's game. I felt the Dawgs came out ready to play, and the first drive of the game seemed to indicate just that.

But as the first half closed, it was OSU who welcomed momentum to their sideline, and that is where it would stay.

Three big plays helped seal the deal for the Cowboys, and in turn seal the fate of Joe Cox and the Bulldogs.

1) Zac Robinson to Dez Bryant for 46 yards and a TD.

To this point Georgia's defense had pretty much held this duo in check. Dez Bryant had taken a wicked hit on the side line from Georgia safety Brian Evans, and seemed to be out of rhythm.

Trash talking seemed to be a part of each encounter these two had. But it would be Bryant who delivered the biggest blow. The All Big 12 conference wide out would get past Evans and make a diving catch for the TD.

Score tied 7-7.

The OSU offense never really seemed to get on track as they have in the past. But they delivered when they needed to.

2) Carlton Thomas fumbling late in the first half, and deep in Georgia territory.

So the Dawgs now need to answer. But Georgia would have to start deep in their own territory. Needing a few first downs, they instead made their first big mistake. Carlton Thomas looked for a couple of yards up the middle, but his run came to an abrupt halt. A hard hit from a OSU defensive player, popped the ball loose and onto the ground.

OSU recovered. The Dawgs defense would step up, and with their backs to their own goal line they managed to hold the Cowboys to a field goal.

Bad way to end the half, but it could have been much worse.

3) Perrish Cox returns the opening kick off in the second half 81 yards.

To me this play really set the tone for the second half. Georgia was looking to come out and regain control. But Perrish Cox would have none of that. He exploded up the middle of the field for 81 yards.

Seconds into the half and the crowd is smelling blood.

Zac Robinson would sneak in for a TD minutes later, and suddenly the Cowboys are up by 10.

Game over? It shouldn't have been. The Dawgs had plenty of time to regroup and get back into the game, but it was not to be.

Penalties and inconsistent play plagued Georgia through out the second half. A long punt return by Prince Miller was called back. A questionable (in my opinion) roughing call on Reshad Jones gave OSU a first down late as well. But it would be mistakes, bad decisions by Joe Cox and turnovers that would do the Dawgs in on this Saturday in Stillwater.

Credit has to go to the Cowboys defense. They certainly stepped up in this game when their offense struggled at times. If someone had told me that Zac Robinson would have only thrown for 135 yards, or that Kendall Hunter would only have 75 yards rushing, and that Dez Bryant would be held to three catches for 77 yards...I would have bet the farm on Georgia.

But as I stated earlier, while not as explosive as they were last year, they made the plays when they needed to.

Georgia will have to regroup in a hurry. South Carolina and Steve Spurrier come to Athens on Saturday. SEC play is here, so it won't get any easier.

Hopefully Joe Cox will improve, Richard Samuel will keep running hard, and the defense will step up as they did this past week.

One game does not a season make...for that I am thankful.

Go Dawgs!!

Georgia-Oklahoma State: Five Misconceptions about the Bulldogs

Game day is only three days away! I can honestly say that I am just as excited this year as I was last year.

Strange? Maybe so.

The Dawgs enter this season as the preseason No. 13 pick, just slightly below last year's ranking (humor intended). There is a different kind of excitement in the air as this season approaches. Some of that could be contributed to a new quarterback leading the offense onto the field. Maybe it's the new group of running backs ready to carry the load. A little of both I would suspect.

But it also comes from a great season opening match-up.

No Charleston Southern here. No Troy nor Georgia Southern. This year the Dawgs take to the road to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

The Cowboys are ready for this rematch with the Dawgs. If you read the comments from the Oklahoma State fans on B/R or any other vent across the nation, you may very well wonder why the Dawgs are even going to board the plane.

This group of fans seems to know little about Mark Richt and his Georgia Bulldogs. All they seem to know is this...Matt Stafford is gone, and oh yes, one more thing, Knowshon Moreno is gone as well. Game over—OSU wins.

I have read statements implying that no one in the nation respects Georgia because they are "not a big time program." Georgia has no tradition, and outside of the SEC, Georgia is not a factor in the college football world.

Now, I do understand that most of this is coming from OSU fans who know little of Georgia football or tradition. I know Michigan State respects the Dawgs. So does Boise State, Hawaii, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, etc.

Nevertheless, the misconceptions abound.

So I have decided to set the record straight. In the process of doing so I will predict the outcome of Saturday's contest. I will try to enlighten our friends from the West, and when the game ends, hopefully we can all shake hands and enjoy the rest of the season.

But I am still debating on whether or not we can shake hands...I wouldn't want a brawl to ensue.

So here are my Five Misconceptions about the Georgia Bulldogs heading into this Saturday's game against the Cowboys.

1) Without Matthew Stafford, Georgia has no quarterback.

Just a few short years ago Georgia recruited a QB and WR combination out of Charlotte, NC. Mohammed Massaquoi, of course, was that receiver, and he has now come and gone.

That highly touted QB was 6'1" Joe Cox. As a starter in high school, Joe Cox was an amazing 31-0. Joe has sat and watched for the past three years as Matthew Stafford led the Dawgs, but now he waits no more.

Most Dawg fans remember well what happened in the Colorado game in 2006. Cox would come off the bench and lead Georgia to a win in the second half. That game is a good indication of what Dawg fans should expect this season.

Cox is viewed as a leader by everyone on the team. He will command their attention, and he will lead by example. While he certainly does not possess the arm that Stafford has, most think he will be more accurate. Having AJ Green to throw to will also make life easier.

When all is said and done on Saturday, I think many fans outside of those in the Dawg Nation will realize that Georgia will be just fine with Joe Cox at the helm.

2) Georgia will have no running game now that Knowshon has left.

This one is almost comical. Yes, Knowshon was one of the best UGA ever had. He ranks No. 4 on the all-time rushing list behind Herschel, Garrison Hearst, and Lars Tate. But Georgia has always recruited top running backs, and some things never change.

Richard Samuel, Carlton Thomas, and hopefully Caleb King are all more than capable of taking up the banner and running with it. Samuel and King boast numbers from their high school careers that would make any coach take note.

Samuel is big, strong, and fast. He can run over you or run past you. Thomas is a great change-of-pace back that is shifty and quick. While King continues to struggle with injuries, Georgia will rely heavily on these two to carry the load.

I look for Samuel to start the season off right with a 100-yard rushing performance in Stillwater. Thomas will contribute as well. Knowshon is gone..no problem.

So there you go Cowboy fans...don't say I didn't warn you.

3) Georgia has no idea what awaits them in Stillwater.

So as I'm driving home on Tuesday, I hear a national sports talk host make this comment: "Georgia has no idea what awaits them in Stillwater."

Are you serious?

The last time I checked, T Bone Picklers ball field in Stillwater held just over 60,000 screaming fans. Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure they are very loud.

Just a reminder...Georgia plays in the SEC.

So, Mr. National Sports Guy...have you been to LSU at night and sat with 100,000 screaming Tigers fans? Have you been to Knoxville and listened to Rocky Top with 100,000 orange clad fanatics? Do you realize that Georgia has won in both stadiums?

Georgia routinely plays before crowds in the 90,000 range. Big crowds are not something these Dawgs will fear.

So congratulations on your nice, newly renovated T Bone Pickler stadium. When you add about 30,000 more seats let us know.

4) Georgia can't handle the high powered OSU offense.

Georgia's defense had some rough games last year. No question about it. The first half of the Alabama game and the second half of the Georgia Tech game are enough to give most Dawgs a serious upset stomach. Florida put a whupping on the Dawgs as well...

Thankfully, that was last year.

What most Cowboy fans are not expecting to see is their beloved quarterback Zac Robinson hitting the turf. But with the addition of Jeff Owens in the middle of the line, and the pass rush added by Roderick Battle, that is exactly what they will see.

Georgia also has a history of shutting down big play receivers. Just ask Calvin Johnson.

Georgia's defense will show up, and they will show up big time.

5) Georgia can't win in Stillwater on Saturday.

Many expect Georgia to lose this Saturday. If you don't believe me, check out "Baby Tate's losers for week one." Even BT, himself, doubts the Dawgs. What is wrong with this world?

Most likely you have noticed all the badmouthing, all the trash talk, and all the logic that tells us the Dawgs can't win. "The Dawgs can't play outside their own timezone"... ask Arizona State about that. While they are no OSU, they were picked by many last year for the same reasons.

The last time I looked, the Sugar Bowl was in Louisiana (Central Time Zone I believe). The Dawgs have fared well in New Orleans in the past. Why did you know, the Dawgs even beat LSU last season in Baton Rouge!

The Dawgs have been here before. I'm not sure Coach Gunday has.

We can handle the time zone phenomenon. And yes, we can win on the road.

This stat cannot be printed enough. Mark Richt's coached teams are 30-4 in opponents' home stadiums.

But this is the good part...of those 30 wins, 10 came against ranked foes.

So, can the Dawgs win in Stillwater on Saturday? You bet they can.

Will the Dawgs win in Stillwater on Saturday? Yes, I believe they will.

Final score: Georgia 31 Oklahoma State 21

Georgia Bulldog's Offensive Line Is Ready To Flex Some Muscle

The offensive line is not normally a hot topic on most sport sites. Normally when you see news about the guys that live in the "trenches," it's about an injury or two. Maybe a missed assignment that got the quarterback drilled in the back by a blitzing linebacker is the topic for the day, but they don't generally get a lot of love.

As we focus on 2009 and begin to predict how the Bulldogs will do, I thought maybe we should shift our focus away from the playmakers for a few minutes.

Several articles have mentioned the offensive line in general and specifically the return of Trinton Sturdivant. But could this unit be the pivotal unit in the Dawgs success or failure this season?

In my opinion the answer is yes. The truth is this...the offensive line that takes the field for the Dawgs on September 5th may very well be one of the best we have seen in years. They may also be one of the best in the country.

Injuries have plagued the offensive line at Georgia for years. Last season was no different. Trinton Sturdivant went down in August and Vince Vance started six games before he went down for the year.

Offensive line coach Stacy Searels did an incredible job last season. Players moved to different positions from game to game, and even from play to play. Many played two or three positions over the course of the season.

Hopefully all of that experience last year will help this unit stand out this year. All five starters return. Eight players on the unit have started at some point, and combined this unit has 99 starts to their credit.

So let's give some props to the guys in the "trenches." They may very well hold the key to a successful season for the Dawgs.

I will not list them all, but here are nine lineman that you should know. If you don't, then take some time to research these guys.

Key offensive Lineman for the Georgia Bulldogs:

Clint Boling #60 - Clint is 6-5, 286 lbs...Clint started 12 games last season.

Chris Davis #63 - Chris is 6-4, 296 lbs...Chris started 13 games last season.

Ben Jones #61 - Ben is 6-3, 304 lbs...Ben started 10 games as a true freshman last season.

Cordy Glenn #71 - Cordy is 6-5, 331 lbs...Cordy started 10 games as a true freshman last season.

Trinton Sturdivant #77 - Trinton is 6-5, 293 lbs...Trinton missed 2008 with a knee injury. He started 13 games as a true freshman in 2007.

Vince Vance #72 - Vince is 6-8, 325 lbs...Vince started six games before he injured his knee last season.

Justin Anderson #79 - Justin is 6-5, 338 lbs... Justin started seven games last season.

Tanner Strickland #54 - Tanner is 6-5, 327 lbs...Tanner was a back-up last season. He also is No. 1 on the team squatting 700 lbs. in the weight room.

Josh Davis #78 - Josh is 6-6, 293 lbs... Josh started four games last season.

So remember keep cheering on the Dawgs, and keep your eyes on the "trenches."

Go Dawgs!!

Five Reasons Why The Dawgs Will Be a Top Ten Team In 2009

The preseason AP Poll was released this week and, as expected, the Georgia Bulldogs sit at the No. 13 spot. Most of the polls have Georgia in that neighborhood, ahead of their cross state rival Georgia Tech, and right behind their opening day opponent, the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Many feel that despite all the talent that Georgia has, the loss of Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno will be too much to replace. The Dawgs may have a decent year winning eight or nine games, but nothing more should be expected.

If I may quote Lee Corso, "Not so fast my friend."

I believe that all that talent will come together this year, minus the "superstar" type player, and give Florida and the rest of the SEC a run for their money. By doing so, when the season ends Georgia will be right back in the top ten and playing in a major bowl game.

So for those of you who don't believe, or who think I'm off my rocker...here you have the Top five reasons that I feel that way.

In no particular order, here you go...

1. Head coach Mark Richt

Most agree that Mark Richt is a great head coach. Yes, he has his faults, just like any other head coach. But as a Dawg fan I would not trade him for any other head coach.

Many have made this point, but it is worth repeating. Richt seems to do his best work when the Dawgs are flying under the radar. His record at an opponent's home field is an incredible 30-4. Most of the time you are not expected to win when you go on the road. At least to that degree. Several challenging road games are on the schedule this season, and that winning tradition under Coach Richt will help guide the Dawgs through those tough games.

Coach Richt was not happy with the way things played out last year. The Alabama and Florida games in particular left a bad taste in the mouth of all the Dawg Nation. This year there is a challenge ahead for coach Richt. Many doubt just as they did in 2005.

I for one believe he is up to that task.

2. The Opener

The Dawgs open on the road this season against the Cowboys of Oklahoma State. The Cowboys will swagger in with a lot of confidence and a lot of talent when they take the field on Sept. 5. They will believe, as Arizona State did last season, that they are up to the challenge. They will put up a respectable fight in the first half. But in the end the Dawgs will prevail leaving OSU in their wake.

Yes I know, I sound pretty confident.

But as a Dawg fan we have seen this before. OSU in 2007. Arizona State in 2008. Boise State in 2005 (many picked the Broncos to upset the Dawgs in Athens). But when you play in the "toughest conference in the nation," according to college football expert Phil Steele, you know what good competition is.

So, get ready OSU...the Dawgs are coming to town.

3. The Defense

The Dawgs recorded only 24 sacks last season. Compared to 42 in 2007, that is a significant drop.

Injuries played a big part in the lack of pass rush the Dawgs generated, and with several key players returning that should change. Jeff Owens presence in the middle of the Defensive line, next to Geno Atkins should give the Dawgs confidence to bring on the rush. Roderick Battle has looked great in camp, and Marcus Washington has also moved to the line and into the mix.

Turnovers, or the lack thereof, hurt the Dawgs as well last year. The Dawgs are working hard to emphasize the need for turnovers. If they can be successful, and Coach Willie Martinez can keep his players focused on "tackling" and not just "hitting" things should turn around. Rennie Curran, Darryl Gamble and Reshad Jones will need to lead by example.

All of that, to say this. The defense needs to step it up this year, and I believe they will.

4. Joe Cox and Richard Samuel

So, Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are now in the NFL. Good luck guys, wish you had stayed around in Athens, but you didn't. Time to move on.

Joe Cox steps into the number one spot at quarterback. You remember Joe Cox? Highly recruited out of Charlotte, NC. He was 31-0 as a starter in High School.

Despite the "loud talker" in my section giving Coach Richt and earful (see Five Things I hate about College Football), Joe never took the starting job away from Matt Stafford. But this is 2009, and now Joe Cox gets his chance.

DJ Shockley got his chance in 2005, and led the Dawgs to an SEC Championship. Can Joe do the same? Florida will have more to say about that than Joe Cox will, but I do believe that Joe will have a great senior season. He has many weapons to throw to, and several very capable running backs to give the ball to.

One of those being sophomore Richard Samuel. News out of Athens this week is that Samuel is now a "solid No. 1 at tailback" according to Coach Richt. I believe that when November rolls around and the Dawgs are hitting the home stretch of the schedule, Richard Samuel will be leading the way.

Samuel is a tough physical runner. He is strong and fast. He doesn't mind the physical contact and will be able to handle blocking duties.

At this point I don't think we can say all of that about Carlton Thomas and Caleb King. They will all contribute, but when all is said and done, Richard Samuel will be the man.

So long Matt and Knowshon. Let's go get 'em Joe and Richard!

5. The Home Schedule

I have not always been happy with the crowd at Sanford Stadium. I have noticed that sometimes the majority of the crowd seems to "check out" at the wrong time.

Many blame it on alumni, who sit in their seats with their hands folded, and watch quietly. Others think it has more to do with the open end of the stadium, saying "it's just not as loud as other places."

Whatever the reason may be, this year needs to be different. We, and by we, I mean all of the fans and the players, need to have a "this is our house mentality."

What happened last season against Alabama should not happen at home. What happened in 2007 against South Carolina can never happen again. In 2006 it was Tennessee, and in 2005 it was Auburn.

A home loss can be devastating.

This year at home the Dawgs will host South Carolina, Arizona State, LSU, Auburn and Kentucky. I only mention Tennessee Tech because they are on the schedule. Georgia must win all six of these games. No ifs ands or buts.

Take care of business at home, period.

Fans, bring the noise. Take it to a level we have never heard.

Players and coaches, we don't need black jerseys, we need preparation, discipline and giving it all you got for four quarters.

I could go on. I have a list of about seven or eight other reasons...AJ Green, Orson Charles, UGA VII, Marlon Brown to name a few, but I won't. Just know that the talent is in place and the time is right.

The AP poll says No. 13...last year's AP said No. 1.

Let's make this year's poll as wrong as last year's poll...

Go Dawgs!!

Five Things I Hate About College Football

So here I sit just 17 days away from kick-off. I get excited just thinking about the Georgia Bulldogs and the Oklahoma State Cowboys going at it in Stillwater. The smell of football is in the air.

College teams are hard at work, High school coaches are busy preparing for the first game under the Friday night lights. Even the pro players are grunting and sweating as they move ever closer to that first real game of thw new season.

So what could possibly possess me to sit down and tell you what I "hate" about college football?

There are not many things on the list. Only five or six. Maybe seven or eight if you really press me. The good outweighs the bad no doubt.

I would think that many of you, unless you fall into one of these categories, would probably agree with some of them, if not all. Some are out of our control, others are just out of control.

You will see what I mean. So in no particular order, let's proceed.

1) The Really Loud Talker who knows it all

Sound familiar? When I take my seat at Sanford Stadium in Athens each year, I already know where this guys sits. He just happens to be about three rows directly behind me. I believe this guy would complain about just about anything. Yes, he is passionate about his team. But his reasoning is flawed, his knowledge seems limited and his mouth is loud.

So we all get to hear: The starter at running back is the wrong guy. The quarterback is terrible. The defense couldn't stop a pee-wee team. The Coach can't call plays.

Fill in the blank... I'm sure you have one of these guys sitting around you. All of that, and the game hasn't even started yet!

I don't want to pick on this guy. I'm sure he contributes to the University. He is probably a life long fan. But please, if you just happen to be with him, do us all a favor and tell him to just "SHUT UP!!"

2) The Obnoxious Drunk

You may run into many of these on game day. They come in all sizes, shapes, gender and fan base. If you are lucky and you have the early kick-off, you may not see as many. But if you are waiting on a late afternoon kick-off, or even worse the good old ESPN, 8pm start, you may as well get ready.

They will stumble, they will slur their words, they will pass out (if you are lucky). Many will try to drive themselves home and some end up sleeping it off at the county lock-up after stripping off their clothes and sprinting across the field.

The sad thing is... many of these individuals paid good money for their seats and come morning, they won't even remember the score.

So just a word to this obnoxious drunk sports fan. If at possible please keep it to a minimum and let the rest of us enjoy the game.

3) The Knows Nothing About Your Team Announcer

This guy you only encounter when you stay at home to watch the game. Chances are he will be all dressed up and looking good. He will have all the credentials. He may be an ex-jock who once was an All-Pro. But when it comes to your team, he seems to know nothing.

You will try to help this guy. You will correct him when he tells you that Stafford is a Senior (no.. he was a junior last year), or when he refers to freshman (he's a sophomore) running back Richard Samuels (it's Samuel, no "s", gee how many times do I have to tell you)...

At first you just smile and shake your head. But come the fourth quarter, you are shouting at the TV! This guy is worse than Lou Holtz... You admit you exaggerate, no one could be as bad as Lou, but it makes you feel better still.

As the number of broadcast increase every year, it will only get worse. This guy is here to stay. So just grin and bear it.

4) That Fan of the Team we just never seem to beat

Care to name them? For UGA it is pretty simple.

Florida is that team we just never seem to beat. I can say it. I'm a big boy. But I have to admit when I see a Florida fan coming, I usually turn the other way.

Tebow will graduate and move on... at least I hope he will. Urban will get a big contract offer and move to South Bend. Spurrier will come back and.... no, scratch that one.

I'm sure UGA will eventually string a few wins together against the dreaded Gators. Georgia Tech fans hope this is year they finally get back to back wins against the Dawgs. Alabama finally gets to brag that they beat Auburn.

The list goes on and on. That fan is everywhere... you know who you are.

If you don't have one of these fans hounding you season after season, you will eventually. So be nice. Because what goes around, comes around. Or so they say.

5) The West Coast game

This one is kind of a love hate relationship. At night when I check to see who the "late" game is, I'm all excited. Come Sunday morning when its time to get up and head to church it's more like... what was I thinking?

ESPN, Fox and all the cable networks provide us with any number of games every Saturday. Great match-ups from noon till the wee hours of the morning. Thursday and Friday have been added to the mix as well. So many games, so little time.

So you make yourself look and guess what? Boise State plays Fresno at 10:30. Hawaii is at UCLA this week. USC is playing San Francisco Tech at 11pm EST... How can I not stay up and watch?

So try as I may to hate the West coast game, I must admit I do love them all on Saturday night... But on Sunday morning how I hate myself, and the network that brought those games to me!!

So how about it? Did I miss anything? Please add what you "hate" about college football. Of course we all know the love outweighs the hate any day!!

Georgia Bulldog Weekend Recap

It was a busy weekend in the Dawg Nation. No, you didn't miss the season opener. The Dawgs are still hard at work preparing for the 2009 season. But they did scrimmage again on Saturday night in Athens.

Two former Dawgs, also made their NFL debuts with mixed results. Matthew Stafford took to the field in Detroit, as the Lions hosted the Falcons. Knowshon Moreno also made his debut with the Denver Broncos.

Here is a quick recap to catch you up on those two debuts, and Georgia's latest scrimmage.

Matthew Stafford

Stafford took to the field in his first NFL preseason game about halfway through the second quarter. His first pass zipped twenty yards down the field and hit WR Keary Colbert right in the hands. He dropped it. A few plays later, Colbert dropped another nice pass. No word on whether or not Colbert is still a Lion today...

Stafford showed that he is indeed a rookie when he tried to throw off his back foot out into the right flat. Former Bulldog, Tony Gilbert welcomed Matthew to the NFL as he picked off the errant throw and returned it 42 yards for a TD. Lesson learned.

Stafford would redeem himself on the next drive. He would lead the Lions down the field and into Falcon's territory. The end result of the drive was a nice 25 yard TD pass to WR Derrick Williams.

Stafford would finish the day with decent stats, connecting on seven of 14 passes for 114 yards. All in all a decent start for the number one pick in the draft.

Knowshon Moreno

Not much to report here. Unfortunately Knowshon would have his night end after only three carries. Moreno went down with what would be diagnosed as a sprained MCL. He is expected to miss a couple of weeks. Moreno should be ready for the regular season opener.

The stats show three carries, 18 yards. Not a great start. Hopefully the injury will be just a minor setback and Knowshon will be Knowshon once the season starts.

Saturday night scrimmage in Athens

Saturday's scrimmage was moved to Saturday night. It is August after all. The stats from this one were not as gaudy as those from earlier in the week, but several players continued to make their case for starting spots.

Running Backs—Caleb King was injured and did not play. This continues to be a frustrating topic for Georgia fans. In action on the field, both Carlton Thomas and Richard Samuel continued to run well. Thomas finished with 90 yards on six carries. Samuel contributed 55 yards on 13 carries, with a TD.

Quarterbacks—Both Logan Gray and Aaron Murray looked good when playing with the first team. Gray was six of eight for 91 yards. Murray was five of nine for 95 yards, including a 53 yard pass to Rantavious Wooten. Joe Cox is the obvious No. 1 at this point. For UGA fans success for Joe Cox should result in a successful season for the Dawgs.

The Defense—According to Coach Richt, the first team defense came close to "mauling" the second team offense. That could be good news or bad.

There were plenty of sacks to be found. Roderick Battle continued his strong start, with another two-and-a-half sacks. Freshman Montez Robinson also had two. Junior CB Vance Cuff also forced a fumble and intercepted a pass to lead the defense.

The Dawgs will be back at it this week preparing for the opener in Stillwater.

Here's wishing Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno great rookie seasons. Hopefully this will also be a season to remember for Dawgs!!

Richard Samuel Shines at Georgia Scrimmage

Richard Samuel stood and watched the last time Georgia scrimmaged in earnest. It was the culminating event in the tradition that has become spring football. Samuel did not participate as the race to replace Knowshon Moreno began. His injured wrist, still not fully healed, would prevent that.

As practice began for the 2009 season the names you heard most often were, Caleb King, Carlton Thomas, and even Washaun Ealey. Samuel of course was still in the mix, and most believed he would start the season as the number two tailback. But the buzz had died down some.

Today things may have changed.

Georgia scrimmaged today. Number one offense against the number two defense. Number two offense against the number one defense. Several players stepped up their game, but none more than the 18-year-old, six foot two inch, sophomore from Cartersville Georgia...Richard Samuel.

Samuel ran wild today. Samuel caught a long TD pass. Samuel broke tackles. You get the picture. Something that many UGA fans hope is just a taste of things to come.

Scrimmage numbers mean nothing, that I do understand. So with that in mind here are the numbers that Coach Mark Richt reported as "official unofficial.'

The Running backs:

Richard Samuel carried the ball 5 times for 108 yards. He scored twice on the ground, including a 63 yard TD run. Samuel also hauled in a 70 yard TD pass.

Caleb King carried the ball 5 times for 18 yards.

Carlton Thomas carried 5 times for 60 yards.

Washaun Ealey carried 5 times for 13.

The Quarterbacks:

Joe Cox was 9 of 13 for 158 yards and 2 TD's.

Logan Gray was 6 of 12 for 93 yards and 2 TD's.

Aaron Murray was 5 of 16 for 52 yards and a TD.

Zach Mettenberger was 1 of 10.

TE and WR:

Orson Charles (the freshman TE) caught 3 passes for 55 yards and 2 scores.

AJ Green caught 4 passes for 69 yards and a score.

For the Defense:

Roderick Battle was credited for 3 1/2 sacks.

Overall, some really impressive numbers. But of course this was just a scrimmage. Who knows who will step up in the coming weeks.

One last word on Samuel. He is my pick to start at tailback. I was fortunate enough to see him play in High School several times, and he is a beast on the field. I believe his inconsistent play last year stemmed from his young age. So maturity will be a big plus for him.

He is a big time player, who makes big time plays...The story you hear the most is how he lept over both lines during a FG attempt, landed on his feet, blocked the kick, and then returned it for a TD.

Yes it was just a scrimmage today. But it was Richard Samuel's scrimmage.

So Dawg fans, what do you think? Is Samuel going to take the number one spot?

Georgia's Ready to Continue Season-Opening Success

Well Georgia fans, it's almost here. The 2009 season kicks off in just 30 days. Georgia will head to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to open the season against the 11th-ranked Cowboys. Georgia begins the season ranked 13th in the newly released USA Today poll.

This should be a very entertaining opener. Georgia brings many question marks into the new season. Who will step up and replace the offense provided by Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno? Will the defense regain the junkyard dawg mentality that seemed to be missing last year?

Georgia has plenty of talent returning, and barring injuries should have another great year under head coach Mark Richt.

This year's opener will be a challenge. Oklahoma State has many offensive weapons and will challenge the Georgia defense early. As openers go, this one should be one to talk about for years to come. That thought brings us to our main topic.

The season opener is always a highlight. No matter who the opponent, excitement is in the air. Georgia has always played very well in season openers. The Dawgs are 88-24-3 all time on Opening Day. In Athens, the Dawgs are 48-10-1. The last time the Dawgs lost on Opening Day was 1996—an 11-7 loss to Southern Miss. Not a memory worth reliving.

Many openers are nothing more than a glorified scrimmage. Most powerhouse teams will schedule a lesser opponent to warm up against before moving to the meat of the schedule. I looked back at the Georgia season openers in this decade and found several that were much more than a glorified scrimmage. Here are a few that I look back on with a smile.

August 31, 2002 vs. Clemson Tigers

David Greene and DJ Shockley led the way on this particular Saturday. Both threw touchdown passes (DJ threw two) to help give the Dawgs the early lead. Musa Smith led the way on the ground with 105 rushing yards and Fred Gibson chipped in with a 91-yard kickoff return for a TD. Clemson would fight back and tie the game late, leaving Billy Bennett to play the role of hero. Bennett hit on a 43-yard field goal with 5:19 remaining to give the Dawgs the lead. Clemson would miss a 46-yard FG attempt as time expired, leaving the Dawgs with the 31-28 victory. These two teams would take the opener to Clemson in 2003. There was no drama in that one, as the Dawgs blanked the Tigers, 30-0.

September 1, 2007 vs. Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State came to Athens for the 2007 season opener. This turned out to be another case of the SEC flexing some muscle. The first half of this one was a battle, as both teams traded scores. Matthew Stafford would throw for two TDs and 234 yards. Sean Bailey would contribute 87 of those yards. On the ground, Thomas Brown would score twice, and Knowshon Moreno would contribute 73 yards. But in the end, the real star was the Georgia defense. The Dawgs shut out the Cowboys in the second half and gained the 35-14 win. Of course the venue will change to Stillwater this year, as the Dawgs return the favor.

September 3, 2005 vs. Boise State

So I would have to say that this one tops my list. DJ Shockley has always been a favorite of mine, and this would be the year DJ got his chance. Boise State was coming in with a lot of hype. Upset in the making was the talk all over the country. As I watched this one at Sanford Stadium with 92,746 of my closest friends, I must admit I was just a little nervous.

Of course, we know now that the hype and the talk was simply that. Boise State was over matched from the beginning. The Dawgs treated Jared Zabransky (a really good QB) like he was in middle school. Zabransky finished his day early, after going 8-17 and throwing four interceptions. How did my man DJ start the season? He simply threw for 289 yards and rushed for 85 more. He threw for five TDs, and ran for another. Six TDs on opening day. Georgia demolished the Broncos, 48-13. Now that is how you open the season.

So there you have it...Just a few openers that sit firmly in this Dawg's memory banks. I believe this year may give us another one. Georgia has a lot to prove this year, and playing well early is a must. Coach Mark Richt is known for his ability to get the best out of his team on the road. Under Coach Richt, the Dawgs are 33-2 vs. non-conference opponents, and 27-4 at the opponents' home field. So my guess is the Dawgs will be ready. Let the countdown begin!

GeorgiaDawg's Top Five Bulldog Rivals

So the GeorgiaDawg is back with another list for you to consider. Feel free to comment, pick apart, laugh at, disagree with..... or just shake your fist at.

Whatever floats your boat...

Last month we looked at the top ten running backs in Georgia football history. It was a good list. A few names were added for consideration by the many Dawgs fans that frequent b/r. For the most part, we all agreed.

I decided to change the format a little bit this time, and go with a slide show. Since my topic covers only five teams, it seems like a good plan.

So take a look at who I think are Georgia's top rivals these days. Not much has changed through the years. Depending on where you live in the state, you might want to swap a few of the spots.

If you live in North Georgia, you most likely hate the Vols, since too many UT fans don't seem to know where the state line is.

If you live below Atlanta and to the west a bit, you know how obnoxious Auburn fans can be.

If you live in South Georgia, bless you heart. Not only do the gnats eat you alive during the summer, but you see Gators every where you turn. It stinks near the swamp, doesn't it?

So with that being said, its easy to see how this list could be adjusted to suit many tastes.... or should I say "hate."

So on with the list... give me some feedback, and let me know how you feel.
Begin Slideshow

GeorgiaDawg's Top 10 List: All-Time Great Bulldog Running Backs

So National Signing Day has come and gone. Articles and opinions abound on which school did well, and which school did not. I decided to stay out of the predicting business and pass on the opportunity to comment on Georgia's class of 2009.

I'm sure that the 18 players Georgia signed will do well. Hopefully most will qualify. Some will have an immediate impact this fall, others will not see game action for at least a year. No doubt this is a fun time to look ahead.

But I have decided to take this off season and take a look back. In some cases, the memories will be fresh, others you may need to look back in the UGA history books to rekindle those memories.

Today I start what I hope will be a series of "Top 10" list of some of the greatest players in UGA history.

I will tackle most of the positions, one by one, and list those that I feel are the best ten in each category. Of course, this will just be my opinion. Hopefully you will agree with some, and disagree with others.

More than anything I hope you will voice your opinion. Give me your "Top 10", and tell me where I was "wrong"...

So lets have some fun and look back on some great players in UGA history, while we look forward to kick-off in 2009.

First up...here is my "Top Ten UGA Running Backs of All Time"...

10) Thomas Brown - Thomas Brown will always be one of my favorites. He always seemed to be in the middle of the action. Making tackles on special teams, or returning a kick-off for a TD. He was also a pretty good running back! Despite splitting time with others for most of his career, Thomas led the Bulldogs in rushing in 2004 (875 yds) and in 2005 (736 yds). He finished his senior year with almost 1,200 all purpose yards.

Thomas was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2008 NFL draft. He missed his rookie season after suffering an injury in the preseason.

9) Musa Smith - Musa Smith was a big part of the 2002 SEC championship season. Musa led the team in rushing that year with 1,324 yards. In the 2003 Sugar Bowl Musa led Georgia to a win over Florida State rushing for 145 yards. Musa finished his Georgia career with 2,202 yards and 19 TDs.

In the 2003 NFL draft the Baltimore Ravens picked Smith in the 3rd round.

8) Terrell Davis - Davis could be a little higher on this list. But his Georgia days pale in comparison to his NFL days. Davis claimed that then head coach Ray Goff never liked him, and he was forced to play with injuries that limited his effectiveness.

In Goff's pass happy offense Davis rushed for 824 yards, and 445 yards as a starter. He finished his senior season strong with games of 113 yards and 121 yards. This strong finished earned him an invite to the Blue-Gray game.

The rest is NFL history. Drafted by the Broncos in 1995, Davis would play for Denver from 1995-2002. He finished his NFL career with 7,607 yards rushing and 60 td's. He won the Super Bowl MVP in 1997, and won NFL MVP honors in 1998.

7) Tim Worley - Worley finished his UGA career with just over 2,000 yards rushing and 27 td's. In 1998 Tim led the Dawgs with over 1,200 yards.

Worley was drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the NFL draft. As a rookie Tim rushed for 770 yards. Worley retired from the NFL in 1994.

6) Rodney Hampton - Hampton came to UGA by way of Houston,Texas. He left the Dawgs after having rushed for over 2,600 yards. Hampton had a very successful career in the NFL.

Drafted in the first round of the 1990 draft by the NY Giants, Worley would play in the NFL from 1990-1997. He rushed for almost 6,900 yards. Worley rushed for over 1,000 yards in each season from 1991-1995. Tim earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Giants Super Bowl XXV championship team.

5) Knowshon Moreno - What an impact Knowshon had in 2007 and 2008. In just two seasons on the field in Athens, Knowshon rushed for over 2,700 yards. Moreno rushed for 30 TDs in those two seasons. Another in the line of "what might have been", Knowshon announced in January that he will enter the NFL draft, and leave UGA after only two seasons (Knowshon was red-shirted his first year).

Despite his short time in Athens, he will no doubt be remembered as one of the greats. I look forward to watching him play on Sunday.

4) Garrison Hearst - One of the best no doubt. Hearst has numbers that compare with many of the great college running backs of our time. He finished his UGA career with 3,232 yards. In 1992 Hearst rushed for 1,594 yards while averaging 6.99 yards per carry.

Hearst was drafted by the Phoenix Cardinals in the first round of the 1993 draft. Garrison amassed over 7,900 yards in his NFL career. He was named Comeback Player of the Year, twice. With the 49'ers in 1998, Hearst rushed for over 1,500 yards. His last season in the NFL was in 1994 playing with the Denver Broncos.

3) Charley Trippi - Charley was a two time All American while at Georgia. Placed in the backfield with UGA great Frank Sinkwich, Trippi was one of the greatest running backs ever. Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant once stated that Trippi was, "the finest athlete he had ever seen." Trippi led UGA to a Rose Bowl win over UCLA in 1943. He was named the MVP of the game rushing for 130 yards.Trippi's college career was interrupted for two years by World War II.

Trippi played in the NFL from 1947-1955 with the Chicago Cardinals. His first contract was for four years and $100,00. Trippi starred in the 1947 NFL Championship game against the Eagles. The field was icy, so Trippi wore basketball shoes for better traction. He totaled over 200 yards in the game.

He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1968.

2) Frank Sinkwich - Sinkwich did it all while at Georgia. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1942. In his three year career at UGA, Sinkwich rushed for over 2,200 yards and passed for over 2,300 yards. He accounted for 60 TDs during that span. In 1941 he led the NCAA in rushing, and in 1942 was voted the No. 1 Athlete in the country by the AP.

He led Georgia to an Orange Bowl win in 1942 totaling almost 400 yards of offense. He played the game as he had played most of the regular season, with his broken jaw wired shut. His number "21" is retired at UGA.

Drafted by the Lions as the number one pick in 1943, Sinkwich played in the NFL from 1943-1947. He was named league MVP in 1944. His career was cut short by a serious injury at the age of 25.

Sinkwich died in 1990 in Athens at the age of 70.

1) Herschel Walker - Many believe that Walker is the greatest college running back to have ever played the game. I agree with that assessment. Almost any list of the greatest college players ever will have Walker listed in the top five.

While at UGA, Walker rushed for over 1,600 yards in each of his three seasons. Many feel that he should have won the Heisman as a freshman, when he set an NCAA record rushing for almost 1,900 yards and 18 td's.

While at UGA, Walker was named a consensus All American three times, set 10 NCAA records, 15 SEC Conference records and 30 UGA records. Led by this freshman, UGA won the National Championship in 1980. His number "34" was retired by UGA.

Again, the "what could have been" steps in, and Walker left for the USFL after his junior year. Walker played for the New Jersey Generals from 1983-1985.

Walker moved on to the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys in 1986. He played in the NFL with the Cowboys, Eagles, Giants and Vikings. Walker retired after the 1997 season.

During his career Walker rushed for over 8,200 yards and scored 61 TDs.

So that gets us through the running backs. Let me know what you think. Give me your Top 10...

Check back in a couple of weeks for another Top 10 list...

24 Reasons: A List from the GeorgiaDawg

Normally when I decide to put pen to paper and write something for the Bleacher Report, I will write a rough draft. I will do some research on whatever topic I have come up with. I will search for data to back up my statements.

You know the drill. We all do it.

But not today. Today I sit and type. If it comes to mind, I will put it to paper, plain and simple.

For some reason the number 24 is stuck in my head these days. I'm not really sure why.

I could blame it on day seven of the great TV series 24. Will Jack Bauer save the world again? Will most of his co-workers die in the process? Will I tune in promptly every Monday at 9:00 pm Eastern Standard Time to find out? Of course I will.

I could blame the band Switchfoot. I have been listening to them a lot lately. The song "Twenty Four" is one of my favorites. I usually listen to it as I am driving to work. It made the playlist today.

I could blame Knowshon Moreno. The great University of Georgia running back has announced that he will trade in his Georgia red No. 24 jersey for the chance to play in the National Football League. Can't really blame him, but I wish he would stay.

Instead of placing blame for this mysterious ailment, I instead choose to celebrate.

In no particular order (remember this is off the top of my head tonight) I will now give you 24 reasons that I am proud, happy, and excited to be a Georgia Bulldog.

For all you Florida Gators, Louisiana State University Tigers, and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets out there, don't dwell on it. You wouldn't understand.

1) Tradition: Yes, all schools have it, but until you spend a day in Athens you wouldn't understand.

2) Athens, Georgia: See above. The tradition, the sights, the sounds, the tailgating...and that's just on game day!

3) Vince Dooley: One of the great men of the game. I sure am glad he left Auburn when he did.

4) Sanford Stadium: All those UGA fans between the hedges! Nothing better on a Saturday in the fall.

5) Larry Munson: The voice, the legend—we miss you, Larry!

6) UGA I thru UGA VII: The best mascot in the country. Nobody drools better than UGA!

7) Herschel Walker: The UGA crowd still cheers when Herschel runs over the orange clad Bill Bates in Knoxville.

8) Highway 316: Coming into Athens all that red and black, thousands of cars, so you better leave early, or those traffic lights will get you.

9) David Pollack: Of all the recent Dawgs, he is one of my favorites. He was nonstop on the field.

10) The UGA Bookstore: All things Bulldogs! A great way to spend the morning.

11) The Tate Student Center: The students share their center with all the Dawg fans as we await kickoff. Fun place to watch some pregame, or an early game.

12) The Redcoat Marching Band: When they play "The Battle Hymn" it gives me goose bumps.

13) It's Saturday in Athens: A new way to introduce the Dawgs. Nickleback is loud and proud as they proclaim "Saturday. Saturday, Saturday nights all right."

14) David Greene: The pass to Verron Haynes in Knoxville and the pass to Michael Johnson in Auburn is enough said.

15) DJ Shockley: Thanks for waiting it out, DJ. You made it worth the wait.

16) The student section in Sanford Stadium: They are loud even when the rest of us are not, so thanks guys!

17) The Bridge: You can always find one,or two, and if you have to sell one or two. You can also watch the band warmup.

18) Mark Richt: There is something to be said for being a good man and a good coach. I wouldn't trade him for anyone in the country. Thanks, Coach.

19) Clean Old Fashioned Hate: The Jackets always give you reason for a little hate.

20) The South Oldest Rivalry: Auburn is like the cousin you have to fight with every year at the reunion.

21) The World's Largest Cocktail party: Use to be a fun place to go to for UGA fans, but not so much lately. Maybe when Tebow leaves and Urban gets bored.

22) Boss and Champ Bailey: The Bailey boys were fun to watch.

23) Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno: Okay, these should count as two, but since they are both leaving: Thanks for the memories, guys. Wish we could have watched you for one more year.

24) Finally, I'm just happy to be a Bulldog, because I'm just happy to be here. In just over 24 hours I will celebrate an anniversary. Five years ago this week, I had heart bypass surgery at a very young age. Thankfully, everything went well, and I have good health today.

So whether you are a Bulldog, Jacket, or a Tiger, celebrate life every day. Stop and smell the roses. Tell those around you that you love them.

Win or lose on the field, we all have a lot to be thankful for!

Georgia-Michigan State: The Complete Capital One Bowl Guide

Capital One Bowl

(16) Georgia Bulldogs Vs. (19) Michigan State Spartans

Jan. 1

1 p.m. EST

Orlando, Fla.

Spread: UGA -8.0

How they got here...

The Georgia Bulldogs began the season as the preseason No. 1 team in the nation. That ranking means absolutely nothing!

Georgia scored over 100 points combined in their first two games—and fell to the No. 3 spot. So much for being No. 1.

This was not to be the year Georgia envisioned. Despite the three losses, the Dawgs can still wrap up 2008 with 10 wins. That would be a nice way to bring in the new year.

The Michigan State Spartans started the year with a tough loss to Cal, but quickly rebounded. Six straight wins would follow before they battled Ohio State.

The Spartans could not get past Big Ten rivals Ohio State and Penn State, but a bowl win over Georgia, and a 10-win season, will help ease that pain.

Statistically speaking...

Despite the three-loss season that dampened spirits in Athens, the Dawgs had several players who shined all year.

Matthew Stafford passed for over 3,200 yards with 22 TDs while completing 61 percent of his passes. Stafford had plenty of weapons if he decided to put the ball in the air.

Senior Mohamed Massaquoi brought in 57 receptions for 910 yards and eight TDs, while freshman sensation AJ Green caught 55 passes for 951 yards. Green also had eight touchdown catches.

Then there was Knowshon Moreno, who hurdled his way to 1,338 yards rushing and 16 TDs. Offensively, Georgia has weapons!

Javon Ringer was the man for the Spartans this season. Ringer led the way with 1,590 yards rushing and 21 TDs.

When Ringer was running wild, the Spartans were putting up the "W's," but when he failed to come up big, the Spartans were stuck in neutral.

Michigan State also has three wide receivers who caught 30 or more passes. Blair White, BJ Cunningham, and Mark Dell give senior QB Brian Hoyer plenty of targets.

Georgia wins if...

The Spartans' defense believes that practicing against Javon Ringer each week has more than prepared them to stop Knowshon Moreno. However, the statistics say otherwise.

The Spartans' defense has been run over by most of the big-name backs they've faced. Cal and Wisconsin had two backs each eclipse the 100-yard mark against the Spartans.

Beanie Wells (140 yards), Shonn Greene (157 yards), and Tyrell Sutton (139 yards) all had big days against the Michigan State defense. If Knowshon Moreno gets to the century mark on the ground, the Dawgs will win.

Likewise, Georgia's defense has had its share of problems this season. Early in the year, the Dawgs could stop the run but could not slow down anyone's passing attack.

As the year progressed, the Dawgs' D had some dog days. Georgia Tech and the triple option rushed for over 400 yards. That is not a good taste to have in your mouth for the last five weeks.

If the Dawgs have used these past few weeks wisely, and they can find a way to at least slow down Javon Ringer, the Dawgs could win big.

The following section is written by Michigan State student Joe Guarr. Check out Joe's Creature Vs Creature piece on this game as well.

Michigan State wins if...

Ringer has a big day. Multiple touchdowns, over 100 yards, that kind of day. Has to keep the Georgia defense honest. This also becomes an issue of clock control. Ringer having a big day means that Moreno and Stafford will be sitting on the bench, and that helps the Spartan defense.

It comes down to kicking. Brett Swenson is possibly the most underrated kicker in the country, and he had a huge year for the Green and White. A good, accurate leg. He's no stranger to pressure situations either, hitting a field goal in the dying seconds against Wisconsin to win the game.

Greg Jones' predictions ring true. Jones said earlier in the week that the Spartans weren't afraid of Georgia's speed because they practice against Javon Ringer every day.

The Spartan defense has looked suspect against the class of the Big Ten this season, but if the defense comes out focused and confident, you never know what could happen.

GeorgiaDawg's pick...

Obviously, this game features two of the most exciting running backs in college football. Moreno and Ringer could give us a show for the ages. What jumps out at me is this: Georgia appears to have more offensive weapons.

If Moreno is off his game, Stafford, Green, Massaquoi, and company can take up the slack. I do not believe that the same can be said of State. If Ringer can't dominate the game, I don't believe Brian Hoyer can carry the Spartans.

Of course, I didn't think JPW could carry 'Bama over Georgia, either! This is college football, so anything can happen. But I do like Georgia to cover in this one.

My Pick: Georgia

Here's how the rest of the B/R Bowl Series experts see this one:

Trey Bradley - UGA

Michael Cline - UGA

Justin Goar - UGA

MiamiMitch - UGA

Lisa Horne - Mich State

David Wunderlich - UGA

Brian Scott - UGA

The Complete Sun Bowl Guide: Oregon State Beavers Vs. Pittsburgh Panthers

The 2008 Sun Bowl

(No. 24) Oregon State Beavers Vs. (No. 18) Pittsburgh Panthers

Dec. 31

2 pm EST

El Paso, Texas

Spread: OSU -2.5

How they got here...

Oregon State (8-4, 7-2) finished second in the Pac-10 behind a team they beat, the USC Trojans. OSU bounced back from two straight losses to start the season with six straight conference wins (including their win against USC). However, the Beavers finished their season on a sour note, losing to in-state rival Oregon. The loss cost the Beavers a trip to the Rose Bowl.

The Pitt Panthers (9-3, 5-2) finished tied for second in the Big East. After stumbling in the first game of the year in a loss to Bowling Green, the Panthers bounced back with five straight wins. The Panthers finished strong with wins over rival West Virginia (19-15) and UConn (34-10).

Statistically speaking...

OSU is led by freshman sensation Jacquizz Rodgers. Rodgers led the way in the Beavers' stunning upset over USC with 186 yards rushing and two scores. OSU will need a healthy Rodgers if they are to win this one. A shoulder injury caused Rodgers to miss the season-ending loss to Oregon. He expects to play on Wednesday.

Pitt is also led by a sensational running back. LeSean McCoy led the team with 1,403 yards rushing, along with 21 TDs. McCoy has been compared to Panther great Tony Dorsett. McCoy has certainly been up to the challenge to this point.

OSU wins if...

Jacquizz Rodgers comes back and does his thing. If Rodgers is on the field, he will give the Beavers a big-time weapon.

Beaver QB Lyle Moevao is not normally asked to win the game. If he can settle in with Rodgers picking up big yardage, look for Moevao to throw to his veteran WR, Sammie Stroughter (64 catches for 952 yards, and seven TDs), to balance out the offensive attack.

The OSU defensive line can slow down LeSean McCoy, and get some pressure on Panther QB Bill Stull.

Pitt wins if...

LeSean McCoy does his thing. See a trend here? This came may come down to which big time running back has the best game.

The Panthers will also look to QB Bill Stull to continue his solid play. Stull will look to his top WR targets, Derek Kinder and freshman Jonathan Baldwin.

X-Factors...

OSU's return game could be big in this one. Sammie Stroughter has come up big on several occasions this season with big punt returns. A big return in this game could turn the tide.

Pitt placekicker Conor Lee has been solid. If the game comes down to an extra point, the Panthers are the pick. Lee has made 113 straight extra points.

GeorgiaDawg's Pick...

Hope you didn't listen to me when I picked Boise State over TCU...but I wasn't the only one who missed that one. This one could really be a great game. If Rodgers and McCoy bring their "A" games, we could see some great runs in this game. Either way, I look for this one to be close.

Pitt finished the season strong, while the Beavers stumbled without Rodgers. Although Rodgers may be back, I don't think it will be enough.

My pick: Pitt Panthers

Here's how some other "experts" on b/r see this one:

Trey Bradley: OSU

Michael Cline: OSU

Justin Goar: Pitt

Miami Mitch: Pitt

Lisa Horne: OSU

Brian Scott: OSU

David Wunderlich: OSU

The Complete Poinsettia Bowl Guide: Boise State Broncos Vs. TCU Horned Frogs

2008 Poinsettia Bowl

Boise State Broncos (No. 9) vs. TCU Horned Frogs (No. 11)

Dec. 23

8pm EST

San Diego, California

Spread: TCU -3

How they got here...

Boise State (12-0, 8-0) won the WAC Championship while making a strong case for a BCS bowl berth. BSU brings their high scoring offense, and probably a little attitude, to San Diego.

TCU (10-2, 7-1) finished second in the Mountain West to Utah. TCU brings one of the nation's best defensive units to the matchup.

Statistically speaking...

Boise State is averaging 39 points a game. The Broncos have won by an average of 27.2 points per game. BSU running back Ian Johnson plays in his final game for the Broncos. Johnson is one of the most beloved Broncos in the history of the program.

TCU has the second ranked scoring defense in the country, giving up an average of only 10.9 points a game. The Horned Frogs also have the top ranked rushing defense in the country, giving up only 48.7 yards per game.

Boise State wins if...

In their last five games BSU has averaged 49 points per game. Led by freshman QB Kellen Moore (3,264 yards passing, with 25 TDs), the Broncos will need to continue that late season surge against the stout TCU defense. If they can keep it up, they should win the game.

TCU wins if...

TCU will need to put pressure on Broncos QB Kellen Moore and force him to make a few mistakes. If TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes can add to his sack total (14 this season) and the TCU defense can slow down the BSU playmakers, they can win this one.

TCU will also need a solid game from QB Andy Dalton. Dalton and the passing game have picked up the pace in the last few games. If Dalton can continue that trend and give his defense some help, TCU will be in good shape.

GeorgiaDawgs pick...

Many feel that this is the best non-BCS game on the schedule. I would certainly agree with that. I love great defense and TCU certainly has one, but the Broncos bring a pretty good defense into the game as well. I think the combination of BSU's offense and that "pretty good" defense will put Boise State over the top.

Winner: Boise State

Here are your b/r experts' picks as well:

Trey Bradley: TCU

Michael Cline: BSU

Justin Goar: TCU

MiamiMitch: BSU

Lisa Horne: BSU

David Wunderlich: BSU

Brian Scott: TCU

Georgia Bulldogs Vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: A History Lesson

Roughly two weeks ago, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets marched in to Sanford Stadium as underdogs, and did the unthinkable. They rushed for over 400 yards in route to a 45-42 win over the home town Bulldogs. The Bulldogs seven game win streak in the series was history.

In those few hours on a Saturday in November, the Yellow Jacket faithful also lost something. They lost all memory of the past 30 years in this series of "Clean Old Fashioned Hate."

Seriously?

Have you been around a Tech fan in the last two weeks. One win, in which they're vaunted defense gave up 42 points, and all is forgotten.

Well, before I begin to put the Georgia football world back into reality, let me say... Congratulations to Georgia Tech. They played the game that Willie Martinez and his defense knew they would play. But despite that knowledge, the Dawgs had no answer for the triple option in the second half.

So to Coach Paul Johnson and his guys, I say great job! Enjoy your win.

Now on to the reality of the football world in the state of Georgia.

For all of you Tech fans out there who have short term memory loss, and to all of you Dawg fans who are down on the Dawgs, here is a quick history lesson.

Georgia and Georgia Tech a tradition since 1893

The Dawgs and the Jackets first met on the football field in 1893. Tech had little trouble with the Dawgs that day, winning the series opener 28-6.

Tech took a 1-0 series lead. They would keep the lead until 1897, when the teams would meet for the second time. Georgia returned the favor to its cross state rivals, winning 28-0.

The series would stay pretty even for the first 20 games. Tech won 3-0 in 1925 and evened the series at 9-9-2. Tech would take the series lead in 1928 with a 20-6 win.

Georgia would even things up in 1929. Tech would not see a series lead again until 1955.

In 1963 the Jackets jumped back on top of the series with a 14-3 win in Atlanta. Tech now led the series 27-26-5.

It would be their last series lead to date. This heated rivalry was about to cool off.

Since 1964, the Jackets have managed just 12 wins against Georgia. Let me say that again for all of you Jacket fans out there...12 wins in 45 games.

To say that Georgia has dominated this series in the past 45 seasons would be a slight understatement. During that stretch of dominance, Georgia has posted win streaks of five, six and seven (twice). Tech has won three straight once (1998-2000).

Vince Dooley enjoyed much success during that span as he went 19-6 against Jackets. Even Ray Goff enjoyed playing the Jackets, as he posted a 5-2 record. Jim Donnan would not fair as well, as his 2-3 record against Tech most likely contributed to his exit.

Success would continue in 2001 as Mark Richt came to town as Georgia's new head coach. Richt and his team would win that first meeting 31-17 in Atlanta. Richt would go on to win seven straight, before losing to the Jackets for the first time this year.

So what have we learned today?

We know that it takes very little success to make a Jacket fan happy. After all, they have won 12 games in the past 45 seasons.

To Georgia fans at 33-12 record since 1964 looks pretty good.

We know that Tech fans are overjoyed after winning for the first time in seven years. Losing seven of eight, 14 of 18, and 23 of 31 doesn't seem so bad.

Georgia fans are disappointed in this season. Losing to Tech is like letting your little brother win at "horse" in the backyard. Even though you beat him constantly, he holds that one win in a decade over you as his trophy.

Tech fans will gloat all year...you can count it. But reality says they will win a couple of games every decade. I'm glad they can live with that.

This series has had many memorable moments. Many players have saved their best for this series. In the past decade I have had the chance to see many of these games in person. It makes it easier for me to ignore the short term memory loss displayed by Tech fans.

My most memorable moment from a Georgia-Georgia Tech game?

In 2002 Georgia beat the Jackets in Athens, 51-7. My brother was in town and we got to go to the game together. He had a bag of "bald peanuts" (you know what I'm talking about Gray Ghost) and opened them up right at kickoff. He decided to drain all of the juice out of the bag underneath our seats. The juice decided to run forward, and puddled right on to the seats in front of us.

A Tech fan, who had no idea how bad the game was going to get, sat right down into the puddle. He stood up for the National anthem with a big stain on his rear end...

My brother finally told him to watch out for the peanut juice.

Too little, too late.

He said, "I thought I felt real cold all of a sudden." We laughed till we cried, Georgia won by 44 points. Now that was a great Saturday.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this series. Good or bad. Dawgs or Jackets.

Now that we have revisited history, maybe we can all look at this series again from a "realistic" point of view.
