Michael Irvin's Reality Show Just Might Work

We all know the headline about Michael Irvin’s new reality show. One man will be the 80th man on the Dallas Cowboys roster.

I hear the jokes. I hear the critics.

But in the world of reality television anything is possible. This move actually is very clever for the Dallas Cowboys. In a week where the football world is supposed to be talking Steelers and Cardinals, we have a story about the Cowboys.

But what does this mean for the other 11 members of the cast who aren’t on the Cowboys mini camp squad? Do they have a chance catching on with some other team? Could this show mean something for teams other than the Cowboys?

Let’s take a look at reality show successes shall we?

WWE Tough Enough/Diva Search

If you don’t believe Wrestling is a sport, I accept your opinion. But look for a bit at what these shows were trying to accomplish. It was guaranteeing a contestant a roster spot.

The Diva Search has produced 10 current members of the WWE’s roster and two of TNA’s. Plus Hugh Hefner has banked off the Diva search as three contests have graced the pages of Playboy (not counting Carmen DeCasare who was in Playboy previously).

WWE’s Tough Enough boasts five current WWE roster members and 2 on TNA’s roster. The most notable of these is Mike Mizanin, who was supposed to be a reality joke on a reality show. ‘The Miz’ was first seen on MTV’s real world and was perceived by many to be someone who had wild dreams about being a wrestler.

But now he’s making bank for himself and the WWE as one of their most successful heels.

American Idol

The most successful reality contest in history is by far American Idol. American Idol gives unknowns a chance to be stars. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson…the list is A list in the music industry.

The list of awards are many….42 Billboard Music Awards,15 American Music Awards, 5 Grammys, 1 Academy Award, and many many others. You may not have heard of any of the above names if not for American Idol.

Others shows like Top Chef, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance?… Unknowns from these shows are now making money doing what they never thought they’d have the chance to do.

Am I saying Michael Irvin’s show is going to create the Carrie Underwood of the NFL? No, not at all. But before you write it off as a joke, think about the possibility that maybe….just maybe…..it might work.

What Is The WWE Thinking!?

Well the WWE better have something REALLY good up their sleeve.

The Main Event of August 4th's RAW was, quite frankly, very disheartening. It placed SummerSlam Opponents Batista and John Cena against the World Tag Team Champions Ted Dibiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes. The stage was set. The cocky heel champions against the face opponents at SummerSlam. What better way to put over the young tag team and build heat for the SummerSlam match right?

Wrong.

Instead of doing the one thing that would help everyone involved, the WWE took the opposite route. Cena and Batista are the World Tag Team Champions. Not only is this a recycled storyline from John Cena and Shawn Michaels late January of 2007, it totally killed the 16-month run over having the Tag Team Championships around actual tag teams.

This article is short and nothing special. A high percentage of WWE fans think the exact same thing I do at this very moment. What are you thinking WWE? Whatever it is…it’d better be REALLY good.

Top 10 'Non-Champions' of All Time

In this edition of ‘Ranking the Champions’, I am actually not ranking the champions. I am ranking those wrestlers in the post-Wrestlemania years who were NOT given a WWF/WWE Championship Belt of any kind.

This is a hard list to construct for a variety of reasons. First off all, it’s not like a ‘Ranking the Champions’ list where I can go to a list of champions and weed out who I don’t want and make my decisions from there. This one took a little research.

Also, I am ranking these champions as to what they did in and for the WWF/WWE. Some of the entrants on this list had GREAT success in other promotions but were never given a title run in Vince McMahon’s promotion. I weighed what they did while they were in WWF/WWE.

This list is EXTREMELY old school, since there are so many titles these days and three shows to choose from that a lot of the post ‘Attitude-Era’ wrestlers had a run with a title, mainly the Hardcore Title or some makeshift tag team they were in at the time. To my knowledge the people on this list held no titles.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

10. Bam Bam Bigelow – The ‘Beast from the East’ was a big man who could really move. Plus, whether you like it or not…he was involved in the Main Event at Wrestlemania XI.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

9. The Bushwhackers – Luke and Butch are the only tag team on the list. While they rarely won a high profile match, the Bushwhackers were a staple in the tag division for years. Plus, I really liked the ‘battering ram’ as a finisher!

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

8. George ‘The Animal’ Steele – With his blue green tongue and turnbuckle biting antics, I thought George Steele would be higher on this list when I first started constructing it. George started as a destructive heel and grew into a fan favorite. I hate putting him this low on the list, but while Steele had some interesting in-ring tactics, only his feud with Randy Savage came to mind as anything he did progressive wise.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

7. Tatanka – Tatanka is one of my personal favorite wrestlers. He had incredible ring energy and a nearly two year undefeated streak. Good feuds with Rick Martel, Shawn Michaels, and Yokozuna made him a fan favorite. I welcomed his return in 2006 as it actually gave me a chance to see him live in the ring.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

6. Dusty Rhodes – The ‘American Dream’ frankly didn’t do much as a wrestler in WWF. But his career is legendary, and he had some great feuds with Randy Savage and Ted Dibiase while he was the ‘Common Man’.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

5. ‘Cowboy’ Bob Orton – ‘Ace’ did a lot for the industry, as he was the first real bodyguard anyone had. He was the muscle behind Roddy Piper’s mouth. He was involved in some of the greatest comedic segments of all-time on Piper’s Pit, and is a true Hall of Famer.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

4. Paul Orndorff – The decision between fourth and fifth was VERY close, and it was very hard for me to make this decision. ‘Mr. Wonderful’ was involved in more high profile matches than Orton, so that is why I put him here.

The Wrestlemania main event with Piper, Hogan, and Mr. T started PPV wrestling. Also, his cage match with Hulk Hogan at Saturday Night’s Main Event was great, as it’s the first time I can remember a match being declared a draw, because both men touched the ground first. The restart of that match and subsequent Hogan victory helped propel ‘Hulkamania’ even more.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

3. ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan – Hacksaw did receive some career accomplishments, winning the first ever Royal Rumble and being ‘King’ Hacksaw for awhile, but nothing I would consider a title. Hacksaw is still going strong, working here and there for the WWE. His many years of services is why he is so high on this list.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

2. ‘Superfly’ Jimmy Snuka – Snuka revolutionized working off the top rope, simple as that. All the high flyers in the business today have had to have watched tape of Snuka in his hay day. We still get to see the Superfly here and there, and it brings the crowd to their feet every single time.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

1. Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts – Jake Roberts should have held some sort of WWF/WWE title. His in-ring skills made both himself and his opponent look good, his gimmick was top notch as ‘Damien’ was intricate in most of his matches, and his promos were intense.

Jake feuded with many big names in the business and even helped propel the ‘Attitude Era’ by putting over ‘The Ringmaster’, whom after his promo directed towards Roberts became ‘Stone Cold’.

Honorable mentions go out to Koko B. Ware, Big John Studd, and King Kong Bundy.

That’s all she wrote folks. This wasn’t an easy list for me to assemble, and I am sure the Brooklyn Brawler and the Red Rooster are pissed at me! But that’s how it goes. Have a good one wrestling fans…

Top Ten WWE Intercontinental Champions

This is the first installment of ‘Ranking the Champions”. In ranking the champions I will be looking at all of the WWF/WWE Post Wrestlemania Champions and conducting a top ten list of who I think were the best to hold that title.

The Intercontinental Title has always been my favorite WWE Title. When I started watching wrestling in the mid-80s, it seemed to me like some of the greatest matches were contested over the IC title.

Also keep in mind this list is designed as to whom I feel was at their best when they were the Intercontinental Champion and brought credibility to the title.

10. The Rock held the Intercontinental Title on two occasions. He morphed from Rocky Maivia into the Rock between these reigns, making him deserving to be on the list.

9. Jeff Hardy is what an Intercontinental Champion should be. He is electric in the ring and delivers good matches. The Intercontinental Championship has been called ‘The Workhorse” title, and Jeff is exactly that.

8. Bret Hart was involved in one of my favorite Intercontinental Title Matches ever vs. Roddy Piper at Wrestlemania VIII. He did what an IC Champ should and really made a name for himself.

7. Razor Ramon was cocky, simple as that. The Wrestlemania X Ladder Match with Shawn Michaels will not soon be forgotten. Razor had multiple reigns and good feuds with the likes of Michaels, Diesel, and Jeff Jarrett among others.

6. Chris Jericho: It seems like whenever the WWE needs to add some credibility to this title, they put it on Jericho. That's why he’s held it eight times! The angle with Chyna and Jericho co-holding the Intercontinental Title was pretty entertaining.

5. The Honky Tonk Man: Cool, Cocky, Bad…the HTM is the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion ever. He was the typical heel; everyone thought he was terrible, and that’s why it was so awesome every time he retained the title!

4. Randy Savage: Honky and Savage are the only two on the list that weren’t multiple-time champions in the time covered, but like Honky, Savage had a memorable title reign. He was defeated in perhaps the most heralded Intercontinental Title match of all time against Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania III and had an amazing feud with George ‘The Animal’ Steele during his reign. Miss Elizabeth may have helped me out a bit in placing him so high on the list!

3. Shawn Michaels came into his own more as the Intercontinental Champion than anyone else. More so than being the Champion, he brought a huge amount of credibility to the title by being the heel challenger, especially in his feuds with Bret Hart and Razor Ramon over the title. The mini-stint with Marty Jannetty defeating him for the title was fantastic as well.

2. Ultimate Warrior: His sound defeat of The Honky Tonk Man at the inaugural SummerSlam in 1988 was one of those wrestling ‘shock’ moments and he picked up steam from there. The epitome of him being the Intercontinental Champion came actually when he had to vacate it…because he defeated Hulk Hogan on that fateful night in the Skydome bringing credibility to the title like none other.

1. Mr. Perfect: Maybe it’s the old school in me, but when I see the Intercontinental Title, I picture it around Curt Hennig’s waist. He was great, and he donned the Intercontinental Title like it was the Heavyweight Championship.

I loved it when Kerry Von Erich, who had only been with the company a month, defeated him. The relentless pursuit by himself and Bobby Heenan to get the title back was classic.

After his reigns were over, Perfect was in the Intercontinental Title picture as well. He helped Michaels win it, then helped Jannetty defeat Michaels in a classic RAW moment. Then his influence in the Mark Mero-Triple H storyline only fueled the fire that Henning was out to make the Intercontinental Title the best it could be!

So that’s my take on the top ten Intercontinental Champions of all time. This list does not include Triple H, Steve Austin, Owen Hart, Tito Santana, Jeff Jarrett, Edge, RVD, Shelton Benjamin, and others whom you might think deserve to be on it. This is my take….what’s yours?

Mark Henry an ECW Champion?

Mark Henry, ECW Champion!? Spare me.

Wait a minute. Let me rethink that…

Mark Henry is a former Olympian who has been with the company for 12 years. He’s been through horrible gimmicks, nagging injuries, and has only once been given the chance to be a champion—and that was 10 years ago.

He’s never really had the chance to do anything in his 12 years as a professional wrestler. He has put many faces over. No, I am not talking about the Undertaker at Wrestlemania. I am talking about the numerous times he’s been used by an evil GM in handicapped matches meant to crush a face that usually ended up with him getting clotheslined out of the ring and the face picking up the victory.

Mark Henry deserves to be a champion, and not as a reward because of anything said backstage. You may say that Henry’s ring skills are not that great, but a title was awarded to The Great Khali, right? So why not Mark Henry? To tell you the truth, his promos aren’t that bad.

They’re better than Chris Benoit’s (I know, we’re not supposed to say his name). They’re definitely better than Khali’s. I have actually enjoyed his words towards Tommy Dreamer and Colin Delaney in recent weeks.

So, why not Mark Henry? ECW is the perfect place because he can use a hardcore style without having to use as many wrestling moves. The man provides some huge hits on people and could make for some good matches with Hardcore Specialists Dreamer and Richards on ECW.

Throw in a match with Mick Foley along the way and Henry could be a true “Hardcore” champion. Henry is in the perfect spot right now. He can be brutal. He can talk a little smack. He is a man you love to hate. He is a champion.
