Recent Trends Suggest LSU Vs. Georgia SEC Championship Game

This article is brought to you by the SEC Sports Hub Blog. It is a member contributed piece and its opinion does not necessarily reflect that of SEC Sports Hub.

With the entire national media projecting the Florida Gators football team to play for the National Championship during the 2009 football season, it seems almost a foregone conclusion that the Gators will play in the SEC Championship Game.

However, looking at some recent and historical trends there are more than a few reasons to think the Gators may falter. In addition, the predominant two favorites from the West also have some of the same trends weighing against them.

My prediction is this year's conference final will be played between the LSU Tigers and the Georgia Bulldogs.

First off, no SEC team has even been to the SEC Championship Game in back-to-back years since the Gators themselves did it during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.

This trend is a combination of a few factors, first and foremost among these, increased parity in the league.

Never before has that parity been more clear than during the 2008 season, when no team went unbeaten in league play, including National Champion Florida.

Additionally, the defending National Champion LSU Tigers struggled to a 3-5 conference finish, while perennial cellar-dwellers Vanderbilt won their second bowl game in history, and Kentucky won their school record third straight bowl game.

While Florida may be the best equipped team to repeat as Divisional Champs of any of the teams that failed before, there are a few reasons that they may not. Perhaps the most important of these is a trend that has developed in their series against their main SEC rival, the Georgia Bulldogs.

Despite having only three wins over Florida in the past 19 years, the Bulldogs managed to secure one of those wins following a bye week before the game, during the 2007 season. The Bulldogs once again have a bye before they play the Gators this year, greatly increasing their chances of winning this crucial SEC East contest.

Another interesting statistic: in the three years that Georgia won the Eastern Division this decade, the Bulldogs averaged a preseason ranking of 11th nationally. This year they are 13 according to the USA Today Coaches' Poll.

Now, given the parity and the inability of teams to repeat, it's very possible that Georgia could be the surprise team to represent the SEC East in the Championship Game.

On to the SEC West. Let's take a look at the most obvious trend that would suggest LSU will win the SEC West during the 2009 season. The Tigers have won the division every other year since 2001, including National Championships in 2003 and 2007.

Secondly, let's take a look at LSU's major contenders for the SEC West title, Alabama and Ole Miss. Ole Miss has never made it to the SEC Championship Game, so history would indicate they will likely not represent the division in the title game.

As far as Alabama is concerned, the Crimson Tide have not participated in back-to-back SEC Championship Games since the 1993 and 1994 seasons. In addition, head coach Nick Saban has some starting numbers as a head coach that indicate Alabama likely won't repeat this year.

During his tenure as an SEC head coach, Saban has twice followed up 10 or more win seasons with at least three losses. With Alabama winning 12 games last season, Saban's history of inconsistency indicates the Crimson Tide will likely struggle a bit this season.

Another interesting factor that seems to support the claim that LSU will win the SEC West is their schedule. The Tigers have not lost a road game at Alabama or Ole Miss this decade. The Tigers play both on the road this season.

These are just some interesting facts that I thought I would share to suggest an LSU vs. Georgia SEC Championship Game.

By no means am I trying to state that this will absolutely and indisputably be the SEC Championship Game matchup. Just a topic for conversation with just a few more weeks leading up to the season.

Bigger and Stronger, Jordan Jefferson Looks to Revamp LSU's Offense

Article brought to you courtesy of SEC Sports Hub.

The LSU Tigers football team had plenty of cause for optimism heading into the offseason, after demolishing Georgia Tech in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl to end the 2008 season.

Jordan Jefferson looked every bit the role of a competent starting quarterback and showed some serious upside for the Tigers with his physical tools from under center.

The Tigers have even more cause for optimism, as summer workouts come to a close and fall practice starts up this week. Jefferson has added some size and weight and figures to be an even bigger force during the 2009 season.

"He's bigger and stronger than he's been," head coach Les Miles said at the SEC Media Days. "In my opinion, the experience that he had in his true freshman year will benefit him tremendously."

Bobby Johnson, Vanderbilt Football Ready to Re-Write School History

This article is brought to you courtesy of SEC Sports Hub's Vanderbilt Commodores' Football page.

The Vanderbilt football team made no bones about it at the SEC Media Days: The Commodores are here to stay.

Head coach Bobby Johnson emphatically reinforced that he expects his team to eventually compete at a championship level in the SEC, and he insists that the Commodores were not just a flash in the pan during the 2008 season.

"I think the sky's the limit for Vanderbilt," Johnson said. "We expect to compete for championships. We can continue to make those kind of leaps and bounds."

Recruits certainly seem to be noticing Vanderbilt, as Johnson and the Commodores landed four commitments from three-star prospects over the past two weeks. Those commitments gave the Commodores 14 three-star or better prospects in the 2010 class, exceeding their previous best of 13 in the 2009 class.

The next-best years for Vanderbilt in the modern recruiting era were 2006 and 2007, when the Commodores landed only six players with a three-star ranking or better.

The recruiting numbers for the past two years nearly double the amount of three-star prospects Vanderbilt has had since the recruiting services began releasing rankings back in 2002. What this means for Johnson and the Commodores is that they're beginning to get some talent that can keep up with some of the elite schools in the SEC East.

"We think we've recruited well the last two or three years," Johnson said. "Like I said, I think every year I've been here, we have a fantastic product to go out and recruit with. We're a top 20 rated university. We play football in the SEC. We're in a great city in Nashville. Now you throw in the fact that we've had a winning season, and we know what it takes to go to a bowl game and win it. I think it's an outstanding product to sell."

Read full Vanderbilt Commodores football story...

Sell it he has, not only to the players he's recruiting, but to the players he's coaching. For the first time ever, Vanderbilt seems to go into marquee SEC matchups expecting to win.

"It's more competitive than it's ever been," center Brad Vierling says. "We've been conditioning really hard this offseason. We're in the best shape this team has ever been in."

Johnson may just be one of the most underrated coaches in the country. While some analysts seem to think Vanderbilt can't be a consistent competitor in the SEC, Johnson has no such belief.

"The key thing is to maintain our momentum and make sure that we're doing everything we can to give our guys a chance to win game," he said.

Vanderbilt will look to do just that starting on Aug. 7, when the Commodores hit the field to begin fall practice. Johnson won't be content to let his team be satisfied with their accomplishments from a year ago.

The Commodores will be looking to accomplish a feat in the 2009 season that has never been done in school history: win back-to-back bowl games.

With Johnson at the helm and the returning talent the Commodores have, they're in great shape to do just that.

Late July Tour Around The Southeastern Conference

With the 2009 SEC Media Days over, and fall practices just over a week away for most SEC football teams, SEC Sports Hub takes a look at what's going on around the SEC.

Today, we have a bit of everything, including some recruiting news for the Tennessee Volunteers.

Star WR Markeith Ambles commits to Tennessee Volunteers after attending the Florida Gators' Friday Night Lights camp and coming away without an offer from Florida.

There have been multiple reports around the Internet of LSU OT Ciron Black's motivation to help the Tiger's perform better this year than they did last season. After we reported on it yesterday, this report surfaced on ESPN's SEC Blog.

The SEC announced the arrival of a Digital SEC Network this morning. The network will begin sometime in August, and will allow fans and bloggers everywhere to use SEC widgets on their websites. This is great news for us, and promises to bring some big upgrades to the site!

Georgia Bulldogs coach Mark Richt recently stated that every single one of his skill players, except quarterbacks, will not redshirt during the 2009 season.

If you missed it, yesterday we released our Florida Gators preview. We'll have the Georgia Bulldogs preview for you tomorrow, so stay tuned.

This report is brought to you by SEC Sports Hub's SEC Football page.

Tennessee Volunteers at SEC Media Days

Vanderbilt Commodores at SEC Media Days

So, after taking the weekend to regroup and rewatch some of the press conferences, SEC Sports Hub has put together a list of the top moments, most bold statements, and most interesting tidbits from an eventful 2009 SEC Media Days event.

Biggest Buzz

The biggest buzz of the three day event was undoubtedly man hunt that took place following the release of the 2009 Preseason All-SEC teams. The controversy was over two time National Champion and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow not being named a unanimous selection to the All-SEC first team by the coaches.

Every coach was faced with the question of who they voted for, and it wasn't until the final day of the event that we finally learned the culprit. South Carolina Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier mistakenly voted against Tebow, and issued a heartfelt apology to Tebow and the Gators at the beginning of his press conference.

Boldest Statement

The boldest statement came from Vanderbilt Commodores' head coach Bobby Johnson, on the very first session of the event. Johnson was asked about his expectations for Vanderbilt following the program's second bowl win in history last season, and Johnson responded with gusto.

"You know, I think the sky's the limit for Vanderbilt, to tell you the truth. When we prove that we can win consistently, I think recruiting will pick up and we're going to have the same quality team that the top tier teams have in our conference. We expect to compete for championships," Johnson said.

For a program that recorded its first winning season in the past 25 years, Johnson certainly has brought a new level of energy and excitement to the Commodores.

Best Moment

The best moment of the 2009 SEC Media Days came at what could have been an extremely awkward moment for some of the 900+ members of the media who were present when Tim Tebow came to the stage. Blogger Clay Travis asked Tebow if he was "saving himself for marriage."

Rather than stumble over a question that crossed well over the boundary of professional journalism etiquette, Tebow responded with an unequivocal yes. His graceful and smooth answer, accompanied by a few hearty laughs from the superstar, averted a potentially awkward situation and turned it into yet another chapter in the legacy of one of college football's greatest players.

Most Interesting Tidbit

Certainly one of the most interesting tidbits of information from the week was the fact that Tim Tebow's prophetic speech after the loss to Ole Miss has been used for motivation by more people than just the Gators.

In fact, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt actually read Tebow's speech to his team once and keeps a copy of it on his desk as inspiration.

"What you love about Tim Tebow, not only does he make the promise, he carries it out, and he puts his team on his back. I have those words, after our game, the words he spoke to the media, I have that on my desk. I read it to my team once. I have an awesome respect for that," Nutt said.

Biggest Surprise

The biggest surprise this year probably wasn't quite as big as in years past. There were no subpoenas issued at this year's SEC Media Days, and no coaches decided not to show.

Instead, Florida All-American linebacker Brandon Spikes came down with a case of the butterflies and opted out of speaking at the event. Spikes was replaced by fellow linebacker Ryan Stamper. For a man that almost single-handedly resurrected the Gator defense, it sure seemed odd that a few hundred reporters could scare Spikes.

Best Statement of SEC Dominance:

The annual questions about the SEC's dominance as a conference were certainly not lacking at the 2009 SEC Media Days, after the Florida Gators helped the conference capture its third consecutive BCS National Championship.

Auburn coach Gene Chizik put together perhaps the most impressive statement about the conference's strength, fresh off a stint in arguably the nation's second best conference, the Big 12.

"I think I can speak a little bit intelligently about it because I've freshly been in both. The SEC, when you travel stadium to stadium, the passion, the pride, all of the things that go with, you know, what make college football great, there's no greater league, in my opinion, than the SEC. Do I think this is the best conference in the country? I do."

Alabama Football: RB Corey Grant to Play for Nick Saban

The Alabama Crimson Tide football team continues to stock its arsenal of incredible athletes under tireless recruiter Nick Saban.

On Thursday afternoon, the Crimson Tide landed yet another big weapon when running back Corey Grant gave Saban a verbal commitment.

His commitment came just one day after the Crimson Tide landed a commitment from TE Brian Vogler.

Grant is a talented running back prospect who has a four star ranking on the Rivals recruiting service. He also ranks No. 10 as the best running back nationally.

At 5'10", and 186 pounds, Grant brings an explosive mix of power, speed and cutting ability. He was highly sought after by the Florida Gators, which tells you everything you need to know about his speed and play-making ability.

Four-Star WR Antonio Goodwin to Play for Auburn Tigers

The Auburn Tigers football team continued to put together an impressive recruiting class, as head coach Gene Chizik landed the commitment of one of Auburn's top prospects Thursday morning, wide receiver Antonio Goodwin.

Goodwin is one of the most highly sought after receivers in the state of Georgia. The Atlanta native has collected offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Tennessee, along with a host of others from other top Division I programs.

According to the Rivals recruiting service, Goodwin ranks as a four-star wide receiver prospect and the 37th-best wide receiver nationally.

At 6'2, 170 pounds, and with a 4.48-second 40-yard dash, Goodwin will have a chance to become an elite playmaker at Auburn.

Scouts rave about his ability to get downfield and win the deep ball, as he is an excellent player in the air with his lanky frame. He should help to add the deep-ball element to Auburn's new offense under Gene Chizik.

His commitment comes on the heels of a big recruiting weekend and the commitment of three other players. You can visit our Auburn Tigers football page for information on the other three prospects.

T.J. Stripling Commits to Georgia Bulldogs

The Georgia Bulldogs football team continue to tear it up on the recruiting trail, as head coach Mark Richt secured the commitment of defensive end T.J. Stripling on Wednesday morning.

Stripling is a four star defensive end prospect from Decatur, Georgia. He is a highly touted speed defensive end, and boasted offers from Alabama, Florida, and Miami, among many others.

The Southwest Dekalb High School defensive end is rated as a four star prospect according to the Rivals recruiting service and ranks as the 16th best defensive end in the nation for the 2010 football recruiting cycle.

Listed at 6'6", 215 pounds, T.J. Stripling has the frame to add much more bulk while not losing any speed. He has been clocked at 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash, a remarkable time for a defensive end.

His commitment comes just after four star CB Nickell Robey committed to Georgia and four star DT Garrison Smith committed to the Bulldogs.

RB D.J. Howard Snagged by Auburn Tigers

The Auburn Tigers football team snagged their second commitment, following their Stars and Stripes weekend, landing a verbal agreement from Lincoln High School running back D.J. Howard.

Howard's commitment on Monday morning came just hours after safety Demetruce McNeal committed to Auburn.

D.J. Howard is a talented three-star prospect, according to the Rivals recruiting service. He is listed at 6'0, 195 lbs, and reportedly clocks in at under 4.5 seconds in the 40 yard dash.

Howard's commitment will make him one of the key figures in trying to replace senior running back Ben Tate after the 2009 season.

He is the 11th commitment for the 2010 recruiting cycle under head coach Gene Chizik, and the seventh prospect with a three-star ranking on Rivals.

Mississippi State RB Anthony Dixon Arrested for DUI

UPDATED - July 20th 4:45 AM - The Mississippi State Bulldogs football team took a bit of a hit on Saturday night, when star running back Anthony Dixon was arrested in Starkville for driving under the influence.

According to the police report, Dixon refused to take a breathalyzer or field sobriety test, but was cited for DUI, careless driving, and no proof of liability insurance. According to the officer who made the arrest, Dixon's speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot.

Head coach Dan Mullen and the Bulldogs football team released the following statement following Dixon's arrest:

"Obviously, I'm extremely disappointed in Anthony Dixon's selfish decisions on Saturday night that led to his arrest. This is a topic that we've discussed with our team several times; and we expect each of our student-athletes to not put themselves in this position. We'll continue to work with law enforcement while educating our players about these matters. Anthony's discipline will be appropriate and will be handled inside the football program."

During the 2008 season, Dixon led the Bulldogs with 869 yards rushing on 197 carries. Dixon also scored seven rushing touchdowns and added two more receiving touchdowns.

Heading into his final season at Mississippi State, Dixon is expected to be the starter at running back and a key contributor for the Bulldogs, before moving on to the NFL.

Dixon released the following statement after his arrest:

"I sincerely apologize to not only my coaches and teammates, but also to all of the Mississippi State fans that I've let down by my poor decisions. I will accept whatever punishment coach Mullen decides and hope I can move forward and prepare to help this team."

Alonzo Lawrence Looking To Transfer

On Saturday afternoon, the Alabama Crimson Tide football team learned that redshirt freshman cornerback Alonzo Lawrence would likely seek to transfer from the program.

According to the Alabama Press-Register, Alonzo Lawrence is exploring his options and has not settled on a place to play his collegiate football yet.

If Lawrence transfers, it will help to solve the scholarship crunch facing Alabama. Chris Jackson and Brandon Fanney have also decided to transfer within the past week.

If everyone in Alabama's 2009 recruiting class qualifies, the Crimson Tide will need to reduce the number of players on scholarship by seven to be under the NCAA mandated limit of 85.

Currently, the Crimson Tide have 69 players on scholarship, including four freshmen who enrolled during the spring semester. Twenty-three more freshmen are set to receive scholarships, and RB Eddie Lacy and DT Darrington Sentimore are the only two that have not yet qualified.

The Crimson Tide must also limit their 2009 signing class to 25 members to abide by NCAA regulations.

SEC Sports Hub spoke with a source close to the Alabama Crimson Tide football program and he indicated that Southern Mississippi was the most likely destination for Lawrence.

Lawrence is a former high school standout from Lucedale, Mississippi. He was ranked as a five star prospect by the Rivals recruiting service and ranked as the second best cornerback in the nation during the 2008 recruiting cycle.

Lawrence redshirted last season, after struggling to learn the cornerback position in head coach Nick Saban's system.

Ole Miss Rebels: 2009 Preview

The Ole Miss Rebels football team is coming off its best season since Eli Manning was hurling the pigskin, after cruising to a 9-4 record while recording wins over National Champions Florida, 2007 National Champions LSU, and Big 12 South co-champion Texas Tech.

Heading into the 2009 SEC football season, head coach Houston Nutt and the Rebels have been pegged as a BCS contender and a dark horse National Champion contender.

Superstar quarterback Jevan Snead returns, along with several other key players from a prolific offense. The defense should be as good as any in the conference, anchored by a deep, talented, and aggressive defensive line.

Today, we continue with the fifth and sixth installments in our 2009 SEC football preview. To find all of our previews, follow the links below:

Alabama Crimson Tide Football Preview

Arkansas Razorbacks Football Preview

Auburn Tigers Football Preview

LSU Tigers Football Preview

Mississippi State Bulldogs Football Preview

Key Losses: Fullback Jason Cook, wide receiver Mike Wallace, left tackle Michael Oher, defensive tackle Peria Jerry, and safety Jamarca Sanford

Returning Stars: Snead, running back Brandon Bolden, wide receiver Dexter McCluster, defensive end Greg Hardy, and linebacker Patrick Trahan

Top Recruits: Running back Darius Barksdale, wide receiver Patrick Patterson, offensive tackle Bobby Massie, defensive end Craig Drummond, and linebacker D.T. Shackleford

Weaknesses: It's tough to pinpoint a real weakness for the Rebels heading into the 2009 season, as Ole Miss returns most of their players at the key positions. The Rebels did finish dead last in the conference in pass defense last season, and it's certainly an area of concern for Nutt heading into the season.

The secondary should get plenty of help from a strong defensive line that will put pressure on the quarterback, but it's still up to them to make some plays. With the underrated Sanford gone, the Rebels will have some questions to answer in the secondary.

The other weakness for the Rebels could be on the offensive line. After losing two starters, and a key player and leader in Oher, the Rebels will have to get some new guys to step up and fill in those roles. If the offensive line can play as well as they did last season, the Rebels will be in great shape.

Finally, getting Snead to protect the ball consistently like he started to do towards the end of the year is imperative. Superstar McCluster must also work on not putting the ball on the turf.

Strengths: First and foremost, the Rebels return what should be one of the best defensive lines in college football, despite the loss of defensive tackle Jerry. Ole Miss will get great defensive end play from starters Kentrell Lockett and Marcus Tillman, and they will be backed up by the freakish athleticism of Hardy. Inside, the trio of Ted Laurent, Lawon Scott, and Jerrell Powe should be as powerful group up the middle as any in the conference.

Offensively, the Rebels couldn't be in much better shape heading into the season. They return all but one of their play makers at the skill position and have a quarterback that could turn out to be next in line to Manning as a first round NFL Draft pick.

The Rebels have a talented stable of running backs and all the confidence in the world after knocking off a few top ranked teams during the 2008 SEC football season. This is probably as talented a group top to bottom as Nutt has ever coached, and that becomes even more clear looking into the second string on the depth chart.

Key Games: Sept. 26 at South Carolina and Oct.10 vs. Alabama

The game against South Carolina will likely set the tone for the rest of the season for Ole Miss. The Gamecocks will be looking to answer some questions early on and make a statement that they are finally ready to take the next step in the Steve Spurrier era. Williams-Brice is never an easy place to play, especially on a Thursday night in front of a national television audience. A loss here could cripple the Rebels' BCS chances.

The game against Alabama doesn't need a whole lot of explanation. Simply put, this game will tell the Rebels, and the rest of the nation, whether or not they are ready to compete for an SEC title. If the Rebels come out and win this one, they'll be well on their way towards a potential rematch with Florida in the SEC Championship. If not, it might be a devastating enough loss to take Ole Miss out of the title hunt.

Best/Worst Case: Best case scenario for the Rebels is an undefeated season. We don't throw that around lightly here, so when we say that Ole Miss has the talent and the schedule to do it, we mean it. The key for Ole Miss is avoiding slip ups in games they aren't supposed to lose.

The notion that Nutt has a track record of losing games when he is the favorite has been hashed out over and over again, and we certainly aren't going to repeat it here. We'll just stick to our guns and tell you that Nutt has never had a squad this talented and this deep. A BCS run and an SEC Championship are certainly in the realm of possibilities for this Ole Miss team.

Worst case scenario for the Rebels is probably another four loss season and falling out of the SEC title race early with a loss to a team they have no business losing to.

Alabama LB Brandon Fanney to transfer to North Alabama

Recent reports have surfaced that the Alabama Crimson Tide football team will move one player closer to getting under the NCAA mandated scholarship limit.

Lineback Brandon Fanney, who started on last season's 12-2 team and finished third on the team in tackles, will look to transfer to North Alabama, per TuscaloosaNews.com.

Fanney was reportedly not on good terms with head coach Nick Saban after a few spats during the spring. His transfer will help with Alabama's scholarship crunch, which we reported on over a week ago. Yesterday, we also reported that Saban granted defensive back and wide receiver Chris Jackson permission to discuss a transfer with several schools.

According to our estimations, that puts Alabama at 70 scholarship players on the roster, assuming that both Fanney and Jackson transfer as expected.

Florida Gators Land Four-Star WR James Louis

The Florida Gators football team continued to add to their highly-rated 2010 football recruiting class on Tuesday evening, as wide receiver James Louis verbally committed to head coach Urban Meyer and the Gators.

Louis is rated as a four-star wide receiver prospect by the Rivals recruiting service and the 31st-ranked player at the position in the nation.

At 5'11", 178 lbs, Louis fits perfectly into the mold of the speedy wide receiver that Florida coach Meyer has grown so fond of using during his tenure at Florida.

Louis has tremendous speed, reportedly clocking in at under 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash. That type of speed should help him to continue the trend at Florida of having wide receivers and playmakers that can take it to the end zone on any given play.

Tennessee WR Denarious Moore to Miss 8-12 Weeks with Broken Bone

The injury toll continues to grow for the Tennessee Volunteers football team, just days after news came out that WR Austin Rogers suffered an ACL tear and will miss the 2009 season.

The Tennessee training staff announced Tuesday afternoon that WR Denarius Moore had suffered a broken bone in his foot and will miss 8-12 weeks recovering. That time frame means that Moore could miss up to four games during the 2009 SEC Football season.

Moore's injury means that the Tennessee Volunteers football team will begin the season with only one of their top six receivers from the 2008 season. Leading receiver Lucas Taylor, wide receiver Josh Briscoe, and running back Arian Foster all played in their final seasons of eligibility last year.

Gerald Jones is the only receiver that will be available on opening day for Tennessee who caught more than 13 passes during the 2008 SEC football season.

Fight Between Kentucky and Tennessee Players Leaves Questions for Both

UPDATE - July 15th 10:00 PM ET - We would like to reiterate, at this point, that we are completely behind our source and the information he provided to us. However, at this time it appears that no charges will be filed on either side and that the police investigation into the matter has come to an end.

Things got interesting over the weekend for a pair of SEC Football teams, as Tennessee Volunteers football players got tangled up with Kentucky Wildcats football players at a party in Lexington.

While the details are still being looked into and no formal charges or arrests have yet been made, the ongoing investigation promises to reveal some very interesting things, one way or another.

SEC Sports Hub learned from a source close to the Kentucky program on Tuesday that there was indeed an altercation between Kentucky and Tennessee football players, much in line with several rumors floating around the Internet over the past few days.

The incident took place Saturday night at the Royal Lexington apartment complex in Lexington, Kentucky. The apartment where the fracas occurred belongs to a female Kentucky athlete who had a few friends from the Tennessee football program over for the party.

LSU Tigers Add Four Star Offensive Tackle Evan Washington

The LSU Tigers football team landed their first requirement in nearly a month when offensive tackle Evan Washington committed to Les Miles and the Tigers on Tuesday morning.

Washington's acquisition makes him the first prospect to offer the LSU Tigers a commitment since St. Paul's DE Houston Bates committed to the LSU Tigers in mid-June.

At 6-foot-5, 290 lbs, Washington has the frame to grow into a dominant offensive tackle for the Tigers. He needs to work a bit on his footwork, but otherwise is a very talented prospect.

He is rated as a four star prospect by the Rivals recruiting service and is ranked as the 17th best offensive tackle in the nation.

Georgia Bulldogs land DE Dexter Morant

The Georgia Bulldogs football team continued their recruiting tear over the past month and a half on Tuesday morning, securing a commitment from defensive end Dexter Morant.

Morant became the 11th player to commit to head coach Mark Richt for the 2010 recruiting class since June 1, 2009.

Ranked as a four star propsect at defensive end by the Rivals recruiting service, Morant is now the third defensive end taken by the Bulldogs in their 2010 recruiting class. He is also listed as the 16th best defensive end during the 2010 recruiting cycle.

At 6'7, 249 lbs, Morant has the frame to grow into an absolutely dominant defensive end in the Southeastern Conference. He is an athletic speed rusher who gets off the edge quickly and wreaks havoc with his massive wingspan.

Four-Star OG Wes Rea Commits to Mississippi State

Recruiting has gotten off to a hot start for the Mississippi State Bulldogs football team during the month of July as new head coach Dan Mullen added offensive guard Wes Rea on Monday afternoon. Interestingly enough, the commitment came by way of baseball coach John Cohen.

Rea is a talented offensive guard prospect from Gulfport, Mississippi. According to the Rivals recruiting service, Rea is ranked as a four-star prospect, and is the fifth-best offensive guard in the nation during the 2010 recruiting cycle.

Listed at 6'5", 290 lbs, Rea is a dominant offensive lineman who has the versatility and the frame to play either the guard or the tackle position in college.

Rea is expected to receive Division I scholarship offers in both football and baseball. During his junior season at Harrison Central High School, Rea hit well over .400 for the baseball team and put together a 5-1 record as a pitcher.

Top recruit Darius Winston cleared to play for Arkansas

The Arkansas Razorbacks football team got some huge news from the NCAA Clearinghouse on Monday afternoon, as defensive back Darius Winston, the Razorbacks' top recruit from the 2009 recruiting class, was ruled eligible to play during the 2009 SEC Football season.

Winston was rated as a five star prospect by the Rivals recruiting service, and was listed as the third best cornerback in the nation coming out of high school this year. In addition, Winston ranked as the 24th best player in the nation for the 2009 recruiting cycle according to Rivals.

His arrival likely clears the way for him to jump in and compete for a starting spot in the Arkansas secondary right away. Winston should help to shore up a pass defense that ranked 10th in the SEC during the 2008 football season and gave up over 200 yards per game through the air.

Winston is an elite athlete, listed at 6'0, 180 lbs. He reportedly clocked in at 4.38 seconds in the 40 yard dash and should be one of the best athletes on the Razorback roster in 2009.

Austin Rogers Likely To Miss 2009 Season with Torn ACL

The Tennessee Volunteers football team received a bit of bad news out of the training room recently, as they learned that wide receiver Austin Rogers will likely miss the 2009 SEC Football season with a torn ACL.

Reportedly, Austin Rogers suffered an ACL tear recently during summer workouts. While Tennessee has yet to release an official statement regarding his status for the 2009 football season, speculation is that the tear was pretty bad and he will likely miss the entire season.

Rogers was projected to be the back-up wide receiver behind star athlete Gerald Jones. He was entering his final season for the Tennessee Volunteers football team and it's unclear whether or not he will seek a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA that would allow him to compete in a sixth season.

During the 2008 SEC football season, Rogers recorded 180 yards receiving on 14 receptions, making him fourth on the team in both receptions and receiving yards.

Rogers was relatively quiet last season after posting a big year during quarterback Erik Ainge's final season in Knoxville.

Urban Meyer Slams Door Shut on Notre Dame Talk

With speculation abounding over the past few months that Florida Gators football coach Urban Meyer might leave after Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow's senior season, Meyer took the opportunity on Saturday to slam the door shut on such talk.

The situation was fueled last week when Alabama journalist Paul Finebaum wrote a fiery, but relatively unsupported, piece declaring that Meyer would be heading to Notre Dame to take the head coaching job of the football team after the 2009 season.

Meyer apparently grew sick of the meaningless speculation, and issued a firm statement to several reporters on Saturday. "I'm not going to Notre Dame. Ever," Meyer said. "I'm going to be the coach at Florida for a long time, as long as they want me."

Meyer's hand was undoubtedly forced by Finebaum's comments last week, which could have a severely negative impact on recruiting for the Gators, should recruits believe Finebaum's unsupported assertions.

LSU Tigers - 2009 Preview

The LSU Tigers football team suffered a bit of a fall from national prominence last season, falling to an 8-5 record on the heels of the school's third National Championship in 2007.

Defensive woes and inconsistent play at the quarterback position were costly for the Tigers, who suffered arguably their worst season this decade. The Tigers posted just a 3-5 record in SEC Football conference play, their worst mark since Gerry DiNardo was the head coach in 1999.

Still, things are looking up for the Tigers, who are still as loaded with top notch athletes as anyone in the country. Today we'll take a look at the LSU Tigers football team heading into the 2009 SEC football season.

This is the fourth installment in our preview series. To view our other previews, follow the links below:

Auburn Lands Fullerton DE Joel Bonomolo

The Auburn Tigers football team received its ninth commitment for the 2010 football recruiting class on Saturday, as Fullerton, California DE Joel Bonomolo committed to head coach Gene Chizik and the Tigers.

Bonomolo is a talented defensive end prospect currently attending Fullerton Community College in California. He chose Auburn on Saturday over offers from Arizona State, Iowa State, and Utah, among others. He reportedly received interest from LSU as well but decided not to wait for a potential offer from the Tigers.

Listed at 6'3", 245 lbs., Bonomolo reportedly runs the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds. He is an athletic defensive end off the edge and does a good job of making tackles on running backs trying to get to the corner.

With his commitment, the Auburn Tigers football team now has nine prospects committed for the 2010 recruiting class.

Jakar Hamilton Commits to Georgia As Safety

Georgia Military College safety Jakar Hamilton committed to play his college football with the Georgia Bulldogs football team on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton is a junior college prospect who ranks highly among the list of available recruits during the 2010 football recruiting cycle. He is rated as a four star prospect by the Scout recruiting service.

He is a freakishly athletic headhunter, listed at 6'2", 200 lbs, and reportedly clocking in at under 4.4 seconds in the 40 yard dash.

Hamilton should compete for playing time immediately upon arrival at Georgia, and could have a big impact in his first season for the Bulldogs.

Arkansas Razorbacks Football: 2009 Preview

You can view this article in its original form at Arkansas Razorbacks Football Preview.

On Sunday, we released our first team preview in a series of 12, that will take a close look at each SEC football team leading up to the 2009 season. The first in our series was the Alabama Crimson Tide Football - 2009 Preview.

Today, we'll take a close look at another team in the SEC West, the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Razorbacks football team is coming off a disappointing 5-7 season in Bobby Petrino's first year as head coach.

However, as we mentioned during the spring Razorbacks fans are excited about Arkansas' passing attack coming to life under Petrino. Anticipation and expectation are beginning to bubble in Fayatteville, so without any further ado, we present the Arkansas Razorbacks Football 2009 Preview.

Key Losses: QB Casey Dick, OG Jose Valdez, C Jonathan Luigs

Returning Stars: RB Michael Smith, WR London Crawford, TE D.J. Williams, OL Mitch Petrus, DT Malcolm Sheppard

Top Recruits: RB Knile Davis, RB Ronnie Wingo Jr., OL Anthony Oden, CB Darius Winston, CB Rudell Crim

Weaknesses: The weaknesses for the Arkansas Razorbacks football team are easy to spot simply by picking up a stat sheet. The Razorbacks ranked near the bottom of the SEC in 2008 in nearly every defensive category, including finishing in dead last in scoring defense and total defense. The good news is that nearly everyone returns from last year's squad on the defensive side of the ball. The bad news is that those returning players weren't collectively all that good last season. Still, with an added year of experience, Arkansas could experience a similar increase in defensive production similar to the one Florida enjoyed between the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

The Razorbacks also must be somewhat concerned about replacing some of their offensive line. The heart and soul of last year's unit, Rimington Trophy winner Jonathan Luigs, has moved on to the NFL. The Razorbacks will plug in veteran star Mitch Petrus in his place. Developing chemistry on the offensive line early will be highly important for Arkansas, as they break in a new starter under center.

Strengths: The Razorbacks, as previously mentioned, figure to have one of the most prolific passing offenses in the nation during the 2009 season, assuming there aren't any recurring off-the-field issues for QB Ryan Mallett. Mallett has his hands firmly on the starting job at quarterback right now and should be a huge upgrade from Casey Dick. Last year, Dick's interceptions cost Arkansas several times, and if Mallett can simply win the turnover battle, he should be a terrific fit for Petrino's pass happy system.

Arkansas also figures to have one of the most loaded backfields in the conference, with running back Michael Smith returning. Smith has the highest yards per game average of any SEC football running back returning in 2009. He will be joined by two very talented freshmen, Knile Davis and Ronnie Wingo Jr. The Razorbacks offense also returns superstar tight end D.J. Williams, who might just be the best pass catching tight end in the league. Two other wide receivers, Joe Adams and Greg Childs, really stepped up their game in the spring and look poised to be star receivers in the SEC during the 2009 season.

Key Games: September 19 at Georgia and October 24 at Ole Miss

The game against Georgia in Fayatteville will be the first SEC test for the Razorbacks and it will be a stiff one. This game will give Arkansas a chance to prove that they are ready to turn the corner under Bobby Petrino. It will also set the tone for a very tough beginning to the SEC slate.

The game against Ole Miss comes right at the end of that tough stretch, and could make or break the Razorbacks against former head coach Houston Nutt. If the Razorbacks can pull out a win, they'll have some much needed momentum heading into their final five games.

Best/Worst Case: Things certainly won't come easy for the Razorbacks in 2009, as they'll face arguably the toughest road schedule in the nation, with games on the road at Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss and LSU. However, given the amount of returning starters and the arrival of Ryan Mallett, it's hard to see the Arkansas Razorbacks football team doing any worse than they did in 2008.

The ceiling is high for the young Razorbacks, but that absolutely brutal schedule means Arkansas will likely have to wait until 2010 before they're seriously in contention for the SEC West. We'll say the worst Arkansas will do this season is five losses, with the best case scenario being an eight-win season with a good bowl trip.

Tyson Lee Ready To Post Big Senior Season in Dan Mullen's Offense

You can find this article in its original form here:

Bulldogs' Tyson Lee ready to post big senior season in Dan Mullen's offense

Mississippi State quarterback Tyson Lee had a rough go of things during his junior season with the Bulldogs, as Sylvester Croom's club dropped to a disappointing 4-8, just one year after a promising eight-win season.

Lee took much of the heat, as the offense never seemed to be able to gain momentum at key moments and cost the Bulldogs several opportunities to win games.

However, things are looking up for the senior quarterback from Fulton, Mississippi. After Croom resigned, the hiring of new head coach Dan Mullen was announced. Mullen comes to the Bulldogs after leading a hugely successful stint at Florida, during which his offenses led the Gators to two National Championships.

With him, Mullen brings a wealth of experience and a wealth of knowledge. When Mullen arrived in Gainesville, he took Chris Leak, who had been under three different offensive coordinators, and molded him into the leader of a National Championship caliber offense.

Now, no one will confuse Chris Leak with Tyson Lee any time soon, but there are some similarities that are promising for Bulldog fans.

First off, both quarterbacks are relatively short. Mullen counteracted this with Florida in 2006 by moving Leak around in the pocket to get him open looks at wide receivers. He also spread the field wide with receivers to prevent too many defenders from hovering around the box and affecting Leak's view.

Mullen will likely do some of the same type of maneuvering with Lee, but he has one key advantage that he didn't have with Leak. Lee was built to run.

Lee was clocked as low as 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash as a high schooler and can flat-out fly for a quarterback. Mullen's strategy of spreading the field and letting his quarterback take off if nothing is open will work wonders for Lee.

All he needs is for Lee to develop a rudimentary understanding of when to take off and when to throw the ball out of bounds to avoid taking a brutal hit.

If Lee can master that skill, he will have a terrific chance to be very successful under Mullen's system. In fact, the system is designed to give the quarterback as many options as possible, something that didn't happen much under Sylvester Croom.

Mullen proved at Florida, multiple times, that the right chemistry between an offensive coordinator and a quarterback can be a powerful combination.

Lee appears to fit the mold for Mullen's system. All he needs to work on now is the chemistry.

This article and many others like it can be found at SEC Sports Hub.

Georgia's Cox Ready To Take Reigns at QB As Spring Practice Approaches

Article courtesy of SEC Sports Hub

With the departure of quarterback Matthew Stafford, who many analysts project as the top overall pick in the upcoming 2009 NFL Draft, senior quarterback Joe Cox is excited about taking over the reigns for the Georgia Bulldogs.

After watching Stafford grow and improve over the past three years, Cox has faithfully supported and backed the Georgia football team.

Now, just days away from the beginning of Georgia's spring football practice, Cox will finally see the fruits of his labor over the past few years.

Despite talk that Georgia's quarterback position is an open battle heading into the spring, fueled by ESPN's decision to carry the Georgia spring game live, Cox is firmly in command.

Head coach Mark Richt recently stated that there was an air of confidence surrounding the team with Cox taking over at quarterback.

Cox led Georgia to a come-from-behind victory against Colorado in 2006 when Stafford was struggling, before quietly resuming his role as a supporting player on the sidelines.

Now, he is ready to the vocal leader for the Georgia offense.

“I like being vocal,” Cox said. “I like being loud. That’s just how I play and hopefully if I can transfer that to just a couple other people on the team it could spread like wildfire."

Cox certainly deserves the respect of his teammates, and now he will finally get his shot to be the big man on campus after being the ultimate team player for the past three years.

Kentucky Ready To Take the Next Step Behind Determined Defense

Article courtesy of SEC Sports Hub.

After making—and winning—their third bowl game in as many years, Kentucky players are no longer content with just making a bowl.

They want a big bowl. Despite the fact that this year marked only the second time in school history that Kentucky had made three consecutive bowl games, Wildcat players were not content.

The return of several superstars on defense this offseason reflected that.

Trevard Lindley, Jeremy Jarmon, and Micah Johnson all opted not to enter the 2009 NFL Draft for one reason. They want a conference title.

It's a bold statement, considering their 63-5 loss to defending SEC East champion Florida earlier this year. Not only that, but Florida also returns everyone on that defense and most of the star players on offense.

But Jarmon, an All-SEC defensive end for the Wildcats, reiterated that goal recently. "The next step for this program and what we're working toward right now is a chance to win the SEC East," Jarmon said.

"By winning the East, that gives us a chance to win the SEC and go to a BCS bowl game. That's why we're back. We're back to better ourselves individually as players, but also to better the program and take the program to the next step. That's something we want to do. That's something we want to give back to this program."

It's clear that head coach Rich Brooks is doing something right at Kentucky. The last few years have been terrific for Kentucky, and perhaps no moment was more influential than their upset of No. 1 LSU in 2007.

After that game, Brooks said, "[F]or those people who didn't think we were a real contender, maybe they do tonight."

His team certainly seems to have taken the sentiment to heart.

With the key contributors all coming back on defense and an offense that should get its best playmaker back in running back Derrick Locke, maybe Jarmon isn't so crazy after all.

Only time will tell whether or not Kentucky can reach that goal...and make history in the process.
