Thunder Show Interest in Bg Baby Davis?

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
8/7/09

The Boston Celtics run in this years playoffs was helped greatly by the play of Glen Davis. However, Big Baby has not received the love he thought he would get from Boston regarding a new contract. There is still hope that the Celtics will offer him a deal that would allow him to remain there, his agent and camp will also field other teams offers as well. One team that may begin to draw interest in Davis is the Oklahoma City Thunder. Davis would compliment the current young core of players already in OKC, and they would be able to offer him a contract in the price range he is expecting.

In other news, the Pistons have brought back a staple of their glory years from earlier in the decade. Veteran center Ben Wallace has re-signed with the team on a one year, $1.3 million dollar deal. Wallace, who played with Detroit for six seasons his first stint, won the defensive player of the year award, appeared in 2 NBA Finals, and won 1 NBA title during that initial run.

The banned substance found in Orlando Magic forward Rashard Lewis’ system was DHEA, which can be found in most supplement stores. The substance violates the NBA’s anti-drug policy, and will cost Lewis 10 games, or $1.7 million dollars of his salary next season.

The Clippers may now be taking the lead in the Ramon Sessions discussions, as the Knicks are afraid of the impending decrease in the salary cap next summer and beyond. There are talks between the Bucks and Clippers regarding a sign-and-trade for the restricted free agent, in which the Bucks would at least receive some compensation for the departing guard.

Odom Chooses Lakers Over Heat, Blazers

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
7/30/09

One of the most coveted free agents left out there is returning home, after nearly a month of doubt. First reported by our friends at BlackSportsOnline.com, Lamar Odom will sign a four year contract, with the fourth year being the team option. While the exact dollar amounts are not yet official, ESPN reports the total of the contract would be $33 million dollars. Odom, who was sought after by the Miami Heat as well as the Portland Trailblazers, will head back to L.A, and give the Lakers a decided advantage in their hopes of repeating as champions next season.

In other news, the Toronto Raptors made their team even stronger today, by acquiring the services of former Warriors swingman Marco Bellinelli for Deavan George and cash. Both teams believe they fill voids with this deal. The Raptors add another versatile wing player who will benefit from playing alongside Chris Bosh and Hedo Turkoglu, while the Warriors gain another veteran presence in a young locker room.

The Memphis Grizzlies had an interesting decision to make earlier this month. Reports state the Grizz had a chance to land Jazz forward Carlos Boozer, however management felt he would not be someone wanting to play in their city, and opted to trade for Zach Randolph. Randolph has said all the right things since being traded to Memphis and should relish in the role as primary post scoring option.

It looks like we won’t be seeing Ricky Rubio in the NBA for at least two seasons. Reports from Spain indicate Rubio is close to signing a five year deal with FC Barcelona, which would pay him $1.4 million dollars a season. Rubio would have a clause in his deal that would allow him to opt out, only to head to the NBA after that time.

While LeBron Ponders Next Move, Journeymen Happy To Sit Luggage Down

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
7/28/09

The talks of the Cavaliers offering LeBron James a contract extension, and him signing it this summer are slightly inflated. Sources close to the club do state they would like to entertain talks with their star regarding a contract extension, however they would prefer the talks remained between the two parties.

The Cavaliers enter the 2009-10 season with pressure to win not only from their fanbase, who saw a wonderful regular season campaign end at the hands of the Orlando Magic, but also increased pressure from James himself.

Entering a contract year, everyone from the head coach to the ball boy will be watching the teams every step. LeBron, like fellow free agent to be Dwyane Wade, will both likely not sign this summer, wait it out, and see their opportunities heading into training camp.

In other news, in a press release issued by the team, the Dallas Mavericks announced the signing of veteran forward Tim Thomas today. Thomas will give Dallas much needed depth in the front court, as well as a veteran presence in the locker room, and another shooter on the floor. The Knicks, whom Thomas had played with two different times prior, were also interested in bringing him back.

The Indiana Pacers have brought in veteran guard Earl Watson into the fold, signing the former OKC Thunder backup to a multi-year contract. Watson should be able to fit right into the rotation in Indiana, and compete for minutes previously held by Marquis Daniels.

The more Carlos Boozer seems to talk, the more he sounds like a politician. Boozer recently talked to the media, and stated he doesn’t see himself staying with the Jazz, and that his choice of future employers, the Miami Heat, would be a great fit for him.

When speaking about the potential of pairing up with Dwyane Wade, Boozer stated the pair are both in their prime, and “it would be a hell of a combo.”

NBA's Stephon 'Starbury' Marbury Breaks Down Crying...Why?

At first I was going to write something needling Starbury for publicly posting this; however, there's something sad about this five-minute clip so I decided to leave it alone.

The song being played is "Lean on Me" by Kirk Franklin. Marbury is (probably) going through a lot personally right now, and I hope for his sake he gets the help he needs.

Check the Video Here.

Tyson Chandler Headed to Charlotte? Bobcats Are Clueless

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
7/27/09

The New Orleans Hornets have watched other teams in the West get better, while the best young guard in the game, Chris Paul, stood patiently waiting for his franchise to do something. Paul may soon see his wish come true.

ESPN is reporting the Hornets and Bobcats are in serious talks regarding trading their starting centers Tyson Chandler and Emeka Okafor. The trade is reportedly no surprise to those close to the Bobcats, who have been looking to deal Okafor since the season ended. Chandler, as many remember, was traded to the OKC Thunder at the trade deadline this past season, only to have the deal rescinded when he failed a physical. More players and/or teams could be involved in the final version of this blockbuster.

In other news, it seems the Lamar Odom sweepstakes is down to the final days. Contrary to prior reports online, the Lakers have not offered Odom a four-year, $40 million deal. In fact, it now seems the Lakers' offer is actually lower in total value than the Miami Heat’s $34 million, five-year deal. The two franchises' stars, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade, have both publicly lobbied for Odom on behalf of their teams.

The Heat are believed to also be looking to address their backup point guard situation this week. The two leading candidates to fill that role are Jamaal Tinsley, formerly of the Pacers, and Stephon Marbury.

The Philadelphia 76ers are interested in bringing in former Hawk Ronald “Flip” Murray to partially fill the void left from the departure of Andre Miller, according to the Daily News. Murray was expecting a multi-year deal in free agency, but it is expected that he may only receive a one-year contract.

Another veteran who may be changing places is former Celtics forward Leon Powe. The Cavaliers are interested in bringing Powe on board, and after Cleveland lost out on former Bobcat Sean May, the Cavs seem focused on making Powe their top priority right now.

The Mavericks beefed up their front line over the weekend by signing Drew Gooden. Gooden, who will fill the void opened by the departure of Brandon Bass, is expected to receive a one-year deal worth $5 million.

Miller Makes Portland Better, Iverson Running Out of Options?

After days of speculation over where veteran point guard Andre Miller would sign, everything became clear Friday. The Portland Trailblazers announced they had come to terms with Miller on a multi-year contract, though the financial terms had not been announced. Miller was seeking a multi-year deal, preferably with a contender, and his wishes were granted.

The Blazers move makes Portland now focus on a potential trade to upgrade their front court. Portland now could look for a sign-and-trade with the Knicks, in which David Lee is involved, or could hold tight until the season begins. There certainly will be teams looking to make moves as the winter months go on.

Now that Andre Miller is off the market, other guards, such as the Rockets' Von Wafer, will begin to get more looks from various teams. The NY Post reports Wafer could be headed to New York. The Knicks, in hopes of having a Plan B in case they cannot land Ramon Sessions from the Bucks, are expected to negotiate an offer for Wafer over the weekend. Word out of Milwaukee is the Bucks will look to match the offer that the Knicks propose for Sessions, as the Bucks know that Sessions is more than willing to remain there.

The Bucks are currently shopping veteran wingman Bruce Bowen, and many playoff teams, including the Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets, may show strong interest in acquiring him.

Allen Iverson’s options seem to be be dwindling in the final days of July. The man who once was the among the best in the NBA finds himself without a team and without many offers. The Grizzlies have announced they are no longer interested in his services, and the Miami Heat are looking at cheaper options at the point in free agent veterans Jamaal Tinsley and Jason Williams. One wild possibility that cannot be ruled out includes the New York Knicks as well as his former beloved Philadelphia 76ers, though both would have to be one year deals.

Will Knicks Fans Have To Wait Until 2012?

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
7/19/09

The New York Knicks have continued to clear cap space in hopes of making a serious run at Cavs star LeBron James next summer, although most feel he will stay in Cleveland. Should that occur, New York will still be in good shape to lure some other big time stars to the Big Apple.

NY Newsday reports today on the alternatives that the Knicks may look at should King James shun them. The Knicks will have the ability to wait another season, and make a run at Carmelo Anthony or Kevin Durant in the summer of 2011, or dynamic point guards Chris Paul or Deron Williams in 2012. They still have the potential this summer to make a trade for Jazz forward Carlos Boozer as well.

Would Knick fans like to see the Deron Williams to Carlos Boozer connection occur in MSG?

In other news, reports out of L.A are that Clippers owner Donald Sterling is the driving force in his team trying to land Allen Iverson. Most inside the organization believe that coach Mike Dunleavy would prefer to keep the core he has in place, minus The Answer.

It seems Lamar Odom reached out to the Lakers over the past few days, in hopes of restarting the contract negotiations between the both sides. Ron Artest also personally spoke with Odom, and is trying to play mediator in the situation.

Whether or not the impasse is strictly about money remains to be seen, but many around L.A feel a deal will get done when the dust settles. Odom wants to be a Laker, and his teammates desperately want him there.

Changing of The Guard: Free Agent Update

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
7/18/09

As the free agent period continues, teams are constantly adjusting their rosters to fit their needs. The Indiana Pacers acquired the services of Earl Watson Friday, a day after he was waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Watson will sign a one-year contract with the team, and fill the roster spot open now that Jarrett Jack will be headed to the Raptors.

Another former Pacers guard headed elsewhere is Marquis Daniels. Daniels will sign with the Boston Celtics a contract worth 1.9 million a season, according to Yahoo! Sports. Daniels will provide some much needed depth to the Celtics bench, and fill the roster spot opened by Stephon Marbury.

The Knicks will likely not be bringing back free agents David Lee or Nate Robinson, however where they could be going now is anyone’s guess. Lee will now get some interest from Portland again, with Paul Millsap staying put in Utah.

The Blazers could offer him a similar contract that they gave Millsap, though Lee’s agent was expecting $10-12 million a season.

As for Nate Robinson, the interest around the league around him is not as high as he may have initially expected. Nate finds himself in the situation much like Andre Miller and Raymond Felton.

The three free agent point guards had high hopes of securing high dollar, long term deals this summer, but they are not seeing it. They all may be forced to sign one-year contracts with teams this season, and have hopes things get better in 2010.

Portland, Chicago and Dallas May Try Their Luck in the Lamar Odom Sweepstakes

On one of the slowest sports days of the year, the Los Angeles Lakers and Lamar Odom seem to be farther apart than ever before. The Los Angeles Times reports that earlier today, the Lakers withdrew the offer that was on the table for a week, which would have paid Odom $9 million a year for four years.

Now with no deal on the table, it is very possible Odom could go the route of Trevor Ariza and head elsewhere for the mere principle.

The Dallas Mavericks are thought to be the favorites to potentially land Odom, should he start looking beyond L.A, however there is thought to be interest from Portland and possibly other teams via a sign-and-trade with Los Angeles.

One team that may make a run at Odom is the Chicago Bulls.

The Bulls would have to package a few players in a sign-and-trade to make the numbers work with L.A, but the same package of Kirk Hinrich and Tyrus Thomas that was dangled in front of the Jazz for Carlos Boozer may be bait for the Lakers.

Whether that would be enough remains to be seen.

Another player that seems to be far apart in contract talks is Charlotte Bobcats guard Raymond Felton.

Felton has been looking for a multi-year deal, yet the dollar figures the Bobcats are presenting do not align with what his agent believes is fair market value.

Should Charlotte break off talks, two former Larry Brown guards—Stephon Marbury and Allen Iverson—may start to get some consideration from the Bobcats.

With Paul Millsap likely headed to Portland, the most coveted free agent big man will not be David Lee, but instead Glen Davis.

Big Baby is drawing serious interest from the Celtics, Jazz, and Pistons. Davis has indicated he wants to return to Boston, however potential starting roles in other cities could swing his vote.

Allen Iverson to the Los Angeles Clippers?

Originally posted on LayupDrill.com

In a surprising turn of events, it seems Allen Iverson may find his new home in the Staples Center. It won’t be suiting up for the champs though, but rather playing alongside Baron Davis and the Los Angles Clippers.

The L.A Times reports Iverson and the Clippers are in “very serious talks” to land the All-Star guard. Iverson’s camp is looking for a one-year deal worth the mid-level exception of $5.8 million. The Heat, which were thought to be the favorites to land A.I., are looking to offer only $2 million.

If the Clippers are able to land Iverson, their potential starting five could be explosive next season. Baron Davis and A.I. in the backcourt, with Blake Griffin, Al Thornton, and Chris Kaman/Marcus Camby in the paint.

Eric Gordon off the bench makes the Clips a darkhorse to make some serious noise.

Iverson and Boozer in Miami Could Make Wade Happier in a Flash

Last week, we reported on how Dwyane Wade needed to leave Miami in order to play for a contender. Well, that is before Wade became a pitchman for his team. Now, there is the strong possibility that Jazz forward Carlos Boozer and former Piston guard Allen Iverson could be head to South Beach this fall.

The Miami Heat are rumored to be in talks with the Jazz about bringing in Boozer, even if it means giving up Michael Beasley. Meanwhile, Iverson has three teams looking at him for his services, and the Heat are his preferred destination. If the Heat make these moves, the potential starting five heading into this fall could be:

A. Iverson
D. Wade
Small Forward
C. Boozer
J. O’ Neal

The small forward position could be filled by bringing in another veteran, such as Jerry Stackhouse, or by bringing back Jamario Moon. The Heat would certainly be upgraded with the addition of Iverson or Boozer, however how much better in the East? The Magic, Celtics, and Cavaliers are the teams to beat, while the Wizards will be healthy and better, and the Hawks and Bulls will be solid as well. Wade has a contract extension offer on the table, but may be waiting to see if Miami can pull the trigger on one, if not both of these deals, before signing on for years to come.

The Cleveland Cavaliers Curse Continues

The Cleveland Cavaliers were desperate to make a big splash this off-season. After being thoroughly out-coached and out-played in the Eastern Conference semifinals, at the hands of the Orlando Magic, General Manager Danny Ferry seemed determined to alter the look of the franchise.

Rumors surfaced early on about players like Trevor Ariza, Amare Stoudemire, Rasheed Wallace, and even Ron Artest, but none materialized into reality. Sure, the Cavs did trade for Shaq, but that alone could not get them over the top.

It was widely thought that the Cavs would not re-sign Anderson Varejao, after Rashard Lewis made him look silly in the playoffs, but Cleveland did. Perhaps a desperate move, but certainly one that will come back to haunt the franchise for years to come. A player that is known for his hair and flopping as much as his energy off the bench was awarded with a six-year, $42 million deal.

Yes, those numbers are right.

With free agent forwards like David Lee, Paul Millsap, and even the Los Angeles Lakers' Lamar Odom still out there, Varejao was brought back to the tune of $7 million a year. That's basically a million dollars per point. Cavalier fans' reactions vary from anger to outrage based on the contract given to the forward.

The Cavs' agenda this summer was to upgrade their frontcourt. What grade do you give them for that?

Carlos Boozer to the Chicago Bulls This Weekend?

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
7/9/09

Various reports have surfaced today regarding a potential blockbuster deal involving the Bulls, Blazers, and Jazz. The Bulls would receive All-Star forward Carlos Boozer from Utah, the Blazers would get Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich, and Utah would get Tyrus Thomas.

The Jazz prefer to have Paul Millsap over Boozer, and making the deal would free up more money to possibly bring back the free agent.

In other news, all signs are pointing to former Suns forward Grant Hill signing with the New York Knicks. The Knicks seem to have beat out the Boston Celtics in their bid to sign the veteran.

Former Celtics guard Stephon Marbury is not getting any bites thus far in free agency, and may opt to play in Europe instead next fall.

Marbury rejected Boston’s initial offer of $1.3 million to remain a reserve, thinking there would be more interest on the open market. There were some rumors early on that the Wizards and Heat would be interested, but those proved to be false.

Another veteran free agent guard that is getting interest is Andre Miller. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Miller and the 76ers are way off regarding money for a new deal. Miller and his agent are expecting a three-year deal in the $10 million per season range, while the Sixers are thinking $5 to 6 million per season.

With the Blazers looking to bring in Kirk Hinrich, Miller’s alternatives may become limited fast.

David Lee to Portland Now? Lakers Want Little Nate?

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
7/4/09

I hope everyone is enjoying their Independence Day weekend thus far, whether you are spending time with the family or simply relaxing with a few days off. The NBA Free Agent signing period has been a wild one so far, and with the Hedo Turkoglu to Toronto twist happening earlier this morning, it was only right to update everyone on all the remaining big name free agents out there, and the latest news on them.

Rasheed Wallace: Wallace has reportedly received his offer from the Celtics, but will wait a week to get the offers in from the Cavs, Spurs, Magic, and Bobcats. Many feel the Celtics and Cavs are the front runners to land the former Piston.

Lamar Odom: Contrary to other reports, Odom is not receiving offers from other teams for more than what the Lakers can give him. He wants to stay in L.A. and they want him back. Should work out just fine.

Allen Iverson: Iverson has come out and said he wants to be in Memphis. We don’t know if the feeling is mutual yet. The Bulls rumor that surfaced a few days ago doesn’t seem to have legs to it. The Bobcats interest has lessened as of late as well. Don’t count out potentially a one-year deal to play in Miami alongside Dwayne Wade.

Stephon Marbury: All signs point to Marbury joining Gilbert Arenas and the Wizards. Marbury turned down the Celtics $1.3 million offer, as he stated there was a better one on the table.

David Lee: The Knicks power forward is expected to land in either Oklahoma City or Portland now. The Thunder are looking at Lee or Millsap, if the price tag isn’t driven too high. Portland may opt to bring Lee in, and slide Greg Oden to the bench permanently.

Shawn Marion: Hedo coming to Toronto means Marion is likely out. The Raptors' projected starting five would include Jose Calderon, DeMar DeRozan, Turk, Andrei Baragani, and Chris Bosh. There isn’t enough money or space for the Matrix. Marion could now get some interest from the Blazers, who were looking to upgrade their wing play, as well as Cleveland on a lower money deal.

Glen Davis: Big Baby would likely be gone from Boston should they sign Wallace. The Pistons are a likely replacement.

Nate Robinson: The two NBA Finals teams, Orlando and Los Angeles, are the front runners to bring in Krypto-Nate.

Paul Millsap: Still expected to re-sign with the Jazz, and Utah will look to move Boozer either before the season or during.

Trevor Ariza and Ron Artest to Switch Places?

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
7/2/09

The Lakers championship celebration may be officially over in a few days. Reports coming out of L.A indicate Trevor Ariza is likely to be leaving the champs and headed for a big payday this summer.

Both ESPN and Yahoo! reported that late last night Ariza was getting offers from the Raptors, Blazers, Rockets, and Clippers, and just a few hours ago, I received notice the Blazers prefer Ariza over Hedo Turkoglu, and would be willing to offer a five-year deal worth $40.5 million for the Lakers small forward.

If Ariza goes to Portland, Turkoglu would likely end up with the Raptors, who are only looking at offering a four-year deal to Hedo, in the $9-10 million range per year.

The Raptors may also be looking to add help in the paint for Chris Bosh, by the way of David Lee. It’s not certain Toronto wants to bring in two big contracts this summer, with the status of their all-star big man still up in the air next summer.

The Detroit Pistons may be making some big moves to get better quickly, but their coaching search might be tougher than they expected. ESPN reports Doug Collins has turned down the Pistons coaching job and now, as first reported here, Avery Johnson is the leading candidate. Don’t rule out Sam Mitchell as a last result.

It looks like the Ron Artest Rockets run is now over. Fox Sports Houston reports a source close to the situation stated Artest is looking to sign elsewhere. The Cavs are expected to go after Artest heavy, but don’t rule out Artest as a possible replacement to Odom or Ariza with the Lakers, as well as offers by the Spurs or Mavericks.

The Memphis Grizzlies may still be looking to improve their backcourt, with the potential addition of Mike Bibby. Bibby has seen the Atlanta Hawks revamp their backcourt, and the team may be looking to move on without the veteran point guard.

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
July 1, 2009

The Houston Rockets seem intent on their plans on fielding all possible offers for veteran wingman Tracy McGrady, and some close to the situation feel a trade is likely now that the free agent signing period has begun.

New York Newsday reports the Knicks are offering up Eddy Curry and Cuttino Mobley’s contract for T-Mac. The move would be clearly a cost-cutting one for Houston, who would be able to shed millions off their salary cap.

The free agent signing period has many teams looking to make moves very quickly. The Boston Herald reports teams interested in Glen Davis, other than the Celtics, include the Pistons and the Memphis Grizzlies. Boston is still expected to be the favorite to re-sign Big Baby; however things can change quick.

The Pistons' priority this postseason is not Davis, or bringing in a guard like Ben Gordon. The Chicago Sun Times reports Detroit wants former Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu wearing their colors next season.

Turkoglu is expected to receive offers from both the Blazers and Pistons, however Portland is also shopping for a point guard, and may pull out of the Hedo race if they can land a less expensive option at the forward spot.

The Hornets have begun their shopping list for a power forward this morning, and the list of players includes Joe Smith, Chris "Birdman" Andersen, Brandon Bass, and David Lee.

The Rockets are looking to find a replacement for Yao during the offseason, and have entered into the Marcin Gortat race officially. Orlando stated yesterday if offers for their reserve big man reached over $5 million a year, they would have to bow out.

CBSSports.com is reporting David Lee will not be wearing a Knicks uniform next fall. The two leading candidates to land his services are the Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder. Both young teams offer some outstanding up and coming talent that are in need of a post presence.

Veteran point guards are a premium this offseason. Jason Kidd is meeting with the Knicks and Mark Cuban today, while Andre Miller is being courted by the Blazers heavy.

One player not getting a lot of looks yet is Mike Bibby. With the Hawks bringing in Jamal Crawford, it is not certain whether Bibby will be able to receive the type of offer he was expecting.

In the highly contested Eastern Conference, Rasheed Wallace has seen his free agent value skyrocket since the arrival of Shaq to Cleveland. Wallace is being courted by the Cavs, Celtics, Magic, and Spurs. Early reports indicate the Celtics and Spurs are the front-runners.

Denver is expected to sure up their front court by attempting to land Joe Smith or Channing Frye.

Allen Iverson’s phone isn’t ringing right now.

Updates later…

Post-NBA Draft Rumors: Ricky Rubio to Stay in Spain?

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
June 26, 2009

The morning after the 2009 NBA Draft has provided more questions than answers for some teams. At the top of the list of questions are the Timberwolves, who now have two lottery pick point guards on their roster and no moves on the horizon.

There were rumors before the draft ended last night that the Wolves and Knicks were in talks to trade the rights to Ricky Rubio. However, NY Newsday reports this morning that nothing is in the works. Some reports overseas stated Rubio may now stay in Spain, in which case drafting Jonny Flynn makes plenty of sense.

In other news, the rumored Amar'e Stoudemire to Golden State deal isn’t done yet. Stephen Curry, who was selected by the Warriors at No. 7, plays the same position as Monta Ellis and likely would be included in any type of multi-player deal for the All-Star forward.

The Amar'e to Rockets deal that floated around the net yesterday seems to have fizzled out, but I would expect Stoudemire to be moved either on or before the start of the free agent signing period.

The Charlotte Bobcats are for sale, and Michael Jordan may be interested in buying the franchise, according to a report by ESPN. Current owner Bob Johnson purchased the team for $300 million in 2003, and a group headed by Jordan has reportedly not made an offer as of yet.

Vince Carter Headed to Orlando

Today has been one of the busiest rumors day since we first launched LayupDrill.com. ESPN is reporting the Nets and Magic are in serious discussions to bring Vince Carter to the already loaded Orlando Magic for Rafer Alston, Tony Battie, and Courtney Lee. Orlando, who had been quietly laying low while other title contenders made moves this week, may steal the thunder from the Cleveland Cavaliers by landing a player that Cleveland was looking at acquiring themselves.

The Nets are in a cost-cutting phase right now, and it was just a matter of time before Carter would be dealt this summer. By obtaining Alston and Battie, the Nets would be getting two more expiring contracts. The Magic, on the other hand, would add another weapon, and if they are able to re-sign Hedo Turkoglu, would be the favorites to come out of the East again.

Amar'e Stoudemire to Rockets for Tracy McGrady?

The Houston Rockets are the next playoff team looking to make a big splash this offseason.

Various outlets are reporting that Houston has been in talks with the Phoenix Suns about the potential of obtaining Amar'e Stoudemire. In one report, the Rockets would send Aaron Brooks and Tracy McGrady to the Suns in return for Stoudemire, Goran Dragic, and Alando Tucker.

Another report states Houston's intention to trade into the top five, targeting both Memphis' and Oklahoma City's picks. The Thunder are looking for help on the wing, and Shane Battier and Carl Landry would be part of any deal there.

Meanwhile, the Grizzlies, who may not be sold on Ricky Rubio or Hasheem Thabeet, would want Luis Scola along with Brooks and future picks in the deal.

Two totally different deals, but Houston could look much different next fall.

The Philadelphia 76ers are the latest team to look to make some moves this week.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that the Sixers have offered up Elton Brand to virtually all teams looking for frontcourt help this offseason. There are two problems getting in the way of that though.

Brand is still owed $65 million over the next four years, and he has been injury prone. With so many teams interested in saving money for the upcoming 2010 free agent season, Philly may have to sit and wait till sometime next season—when Brand is back on the floor and producing—to find a willing trade partner.

Meanwhile, out West there will be plenty of change.

The Blazers are close to landing Kirk Hinrich from the Bulls to shore up their backcourt.

The Suns are in complete destroy-and-rebuild mode and have now put Jason Richardson on the trading block.

San Antonio had already made their move for Richard Jefferson, but they may not be done.

Dallas has been quiet, but Mark Cuban won’t sit back and watch the rest of the West get better.

Grant Hill to Join Shaq in Cleveland?

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
6/25/09

One of the best centers of all time, and the most dominant of this decade, has a new home.

ESPN reported late last night that the Suns and Cavs have come to terms on a deal that was rumored for weeks. Shaq will play alongside LeBron James in Cleveland, while Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavlovic, a second-round pick, and Phoenix will receive $500,00 in cash.

Of course, it’s much too early to say who won or lost in this deal, but on paper it truly helps both teams.

Phoenix was not going to get more than what they received from the Cavs. Now, GM Steve Kerr can move forward from the Shaq experiment and return to the run-n-gun offense with Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire from years ago.

The Cavs, meanwhile, receive a 37-year-old four-time champion, who desperately wants to get one for the thumb for various reasons.

The Cavs may not be done reloading. There is still hope that the Cavs will be able to add another wing player who can score and defend. Charlie Villaneuva of the Bucks is the primary target, however don’t count out Cleveland making a run for Grant Hill for depth off the bench as well.

Another deal that should be finished in the next few days involves the Knicks and the Grizzlies. The NY Daily News reports New York will receive former lottery pick Darko Millicic from Memphis for Quentin Richardson.

The Chicago Bulls are still interested in moving up to draft Duke swingman Gerald Henderson, however, the Nets have turned down their offer. New Jersey may look to offer the same package to the Toronto Raptors, who select ninth overall.

It seems the Timberwolves draft plans for the fifth and sixth picks are starting to become clearer.

First, Kevin Love isn’t going anywhere. Though the T-Wolves would love to land Ricky Rubio, management has narrowed down its wish list to four players for the two picks the team owns.

Tyreke Evans, DeMar DeRozan, James Harden, and Jrue Holiday are the four players the T-Wolves are considering. Stephen Curry is not expected to be an option.

Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons Deal Falls Through

The World Famous Layup Drill Rumor Mill
6/23/09

There have been some pretty interesting rumors that have floated around the net over the past week, but the one that I saw this morning takes the cake.

Yahoo! Sports reports the Celtics had pitched the idea of trading Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen to the Pistons for Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, and Rodney Stuckey, however the deal was shot down immediately.

The Celtics were rumored just a few short weeks ago to be offering Rondo up to the Grizzlies for the second pick in this year's draft. While those close to the team in Boston are denying that Ray Allen or Rondo are being actively shopped, one could assume that for the right price, they could be had.

In other news, The Chicago Tribune is reporting the Bulls are close to coming to terms on a deal with the New Jersey Nets that would send their 16th and 26th picks in the first round to NJ for the rights to go 11th.

Chicago is in love with Duke forward Gerald Henderson, and they believe he can be a difference maker on the wing to go against some of the more athletic forwards in the East.

It looks like the Amare Stoudemire to Washington talks have stalled. The Suns balked at the idea of receiving the No. 5 pick as the centerpiece of the deal and countered with interest in Wizards wingman Caron Butler.

The Washington Post reports the Blazers and Warriors have also expressed interest in the All-Star, but he is not currently being offered in any deals.

The Cavaliers are hoping to luck up in the draft and find a player who can contribute similar to the way Glen Davis or Courtney Lee stepped in for Boston and Orlando, respectively. Two names that are on their radar for Thursday's draft are Sam Young and Derrick Brown.

Both Young and Brown have been praised by draft scouts as being NBA ready, though both have shortcomings to their overall game. The addition of either could assist the Cavs in a postseason run.

Finally, it seems with just a few short days to go until the draft, the OKC Thunder are not commited on what they want to do after all. The Oklahoman reports that the Thunder may throw everyone off and select Ricky Rubio if he is available at No. 3. Most mock drafts have OKC opting for James Harden.

If Harden were to slip, the face of the lottery would be altered drastically.

Brandon Jennings' Fall from the Lottery

The fascinating thing about the days leading up to a NBA Draft is that the “experts,” the movers and shakers in many franchises’ war rooms, start to believe the hype around the young adults that they are about to make very rich.

No matter if you are Blake Griffin, Eric Maynor, Wayne Ellington, or Brandon Jennings, the team that selects those players are drafting as much on potential as anything else. In essence, the word "potential" is the optimism that all 30 teams have at the start of training camp.

Title contenders feel they have the potential of winning it all, while some very bad teams feel new players and a new attitude can equal the potential of having a special season. Our latest and next-to-last Mock Draft (last one on Thursday, just hours before the actual one), shows little movement at the top. However, some players are starting to see their names bounce in and out of the lottery.

1. Clippers—Blake Griffin

The only drama surrounding this pick is whether being named to be the coverboy for NCAA 2010 video game will cause a Madden-like curse.

2. Grizzlies—Hasheem Thabeet

My gut feeling says the Grizz trade this pick, whether moving down later in the top 10 to take a guard like Jonny Flynn, or moving into the late teens or early 20s and going with a James Johnson-Austin Daye caliber player.

3. Thunder—James Harden

I think this is pretty much set. The new Big Three (Durant, Westbrook, Harden) are gonna bring some excitement to OKC next year.

4. Kings—Ricky Rubio

There’s no way the Kings let Rubio slip past them, right? Stranger things have happened, but unless they get an offer they simply can’t refuse, Rubio should be able to land right in there laps here.

5. Wizards—Jordan Hill

Another pick I feel will likely belong to someone else before the week is out. Hill is coveted by many teams, including the Mavericks and Knicks, and they might both put on a full-court press to move up.

6. Timberwolves—Tyreke Evans

Evans has seen his draft stock remain steaddy around the No. 4 to No. 8 range. The Wolves have been rumored to move up to possibly take Rubio, but someone needs to send them a memo that Evans will be a better pro.

7. Warriors—Jrue Holiday

If Jamal Crawford thought he was buried on the Warriors bench last year, wait until GSW makes this move. The Warriors also have seen Monta Ellis come out and say he is dedicated to being a Warrior, but that doesn’t mean much to management. Holiday and Evans could easily swap here, but the UCLA guard winds up in Oakland in this mock.

8. Knicks—Stephen Curry

Other than Blake going to the Clippers, this pick is as predictable as they come. The Knicks will take Curry, if he is here, even though Jonny Flynn (projected to be a better pro) and DeMar DeRozan (a potential All-Star) will be sitting in the green room.

9. Raptors—DeMar DeRozan

The next Vince Carter (or Tracy McGrady) heads to Canada. Raptors fans should either rejoice or prepare to watch him leave their team in three years.

10. Bucks—Jonny Flynn

The Bucks can’t pass up on Flynn at this spot. Don’t be surprised if some teams watch how the draft is shaking out, and start ringing the Bucks’ phone with trade offers.

11. Nets—Gerald Henderson

Henderson’s arrival could mean Vince is on his way out of Jersey soon.

12. Bobcats—Earl Clark

The Bobcats get it right on Draft Day (finally). Clark is a bit of a tweener between a 3 and a 4, but could potentially develop into a poor man's Rashard Lewis on the wing.

13. Pacers—James Johnson

The Pacers are quietly putting together a very good young team. Johnson, along with Danny Granger and Troy Murphy, will cause problems for opponents.

14. Suns—Brandon Jennings

Steve Kerr rolls the dice in the most important draft of his GM career. Jennings is brought in to learn from Steve Nash on how to run the "Run-N-Fun" offense. Perfect situation for Young Money to develop.

15. Pistons—Tyler Hansbrough

The UNC star will be a solid pro in the league, and the Pistons are a good fit for his hard-nosed, workmanlike style.

16. Bulls—DeJuan Blair

I believe this pick will eventually not be Chicago’s, but they may draft Blair for a team they will make a trade with.

17. Sixers—Eric Maynor

Everyone has all but penciled in Maynor to go here.

18. Wolves—B.J Mullens

Mullens and Kevin Love on the same front line? Possibly, but not probable. This pick will get dealt.

19. Hawks—Terrence Williams

Williams' athleticism and potential gives the Hawks another scorer. I think Acie Law will get one more year to develop, rather than the Hawks taking a point guard.

20. Utah Jazz—Austin Daye

Daye can and will be the replacement for Carlos Boozer or Paul Millsap, whichever one departs.

21. Hornets—Ty Lawson

Lawson is a great talent, and a CP3/Lawson backcourt would create matchup problems.

22. Mavericks—Sam Young

A younger version of Jerry Stackhouse, potentially.

23. Kings—Wayne Ellington

Sacramento gets a steal here. Ellington will get playing time on a losing team, and could develop nicely in a year or so.

24. Blazers—Omri Cassipi

Another capable rebounder who can add depth to the front court.

25. Thunder—Patrick Mills

Mills and Westbrook provide OKC with one of the best young backcourts in the league, potentially.

26. Bulls—Jeff Teague

Teague is the best player available at this spot, and while Chicago already has Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose at the point, Teague can offer up valuable minutes with the second team.

27. Grizzlies—Derrick Brown

Derrick Brown could be the sleeper of the NBA Draft, seriously.

28. Timberwolves—Taj Gibson

Depth, Depth, Depth…

29. Lakers—Jack McClinton

McClinton could potentially provide the Lakers with added depth, and play a critical role in the team's repeat hopes, should Lamar Odom or Trevor Ariza leave.

30. Cavaliers—Marcus Thornton

Another big frontcourt player to help LeBron in his quest for the ring.

Knicks Looking To Move Up In Draft

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill

We're just a few short days away from the NBA Draft, and the rumor mill is buzzing with news about possible movement among teams in the lottery.

Let’s start in the Big Apple, where NY Newsday reports today that the Wizards and Knicks have spoken about a deal involving two former Wizards returning to D.C.

It was first reported that Washington would be interested in acquiring Wilson Chandler from the Knicks, the expiring contract of swingman Larry Hughes, along with Jared Jeffries. The Knicks and Wizards spoke about a deal earlier in the season that would have sent Hughes to D.C for Mike James and Etan Thomas, however the two teams were not able to come to terms before the trade deadline.

The Knicks are also interested in the Wizards fifth overall pick, as they feel it’s possible they will be able to land either Stephen Curry or Ricky Rubio in that spot. It’s not certain, other than swapping picks (Knicks select 8th), what the Wizards would want in return.

Another team that may be interested in in moving into the top five are the Dallas Mavericks.

The Dallas Morning News reports the Mavs have their eyes set on Arizona forward Jordan Hill, and would offer up the expiring contracts of Jerry Stackhouse and Erick Dampier. The Mavs may opt for Hill if they feel they can’t get a deal done for Shaquille O’Neal.

Dallas doesn’t expect to be able to land a viable big man where they are drafting currently in the first round, and would likely include that pick in any deal.

There is still the potential that the Wizards actually keep the pick, though two players that they would be interested in selecting, Rubio and Jrue Holiday, refused to conduct interviews with the team at the request of their agent, Dan Fegan.

The Washington Post reports that Fegan, who used to represent Wizards star Gilbert Arenas, wants neither of his clients to be teammates with Agent Zero.

Hasheem Thabeet Wanted Badly By Timberwolves

The Timberwolves haven’t been talked about this much around the league in years. Over the past week, we have reported Kevin Love tweeting about Kevin Mchale not coming back, Kevin Love potentially being traded to Memphis, and Al Jefferson being talked about in a trade to bring in Amare Stoudemire. Now comes word about the team possibly looking to acquire the number five pick overall from the Wizards.

The Washington Times reported this weekend that the Timberwolves have reached out to the Wizards about acquiring the fifth pick in the upcoming draft. Minnesota is intrigued with moving up to the No. 2 position so they can select Hasheem Thabeet, but in order to do so, Memphis may want a mix of players and picks.

The Wizards would reportedly receive Wolves forward Mike Miller, guard Randy Foye, and the 28th pick in the first round for the fifth pick. Miller’s expiring contract entices Washington, as does Foye. The 28th pick could be used to add depth to the front court.

Minnesota, on the other hand, would then own the fifth, sixth, and 18th picks. Memphis would reportedly want the fifth and 18th picks for Minnesota to get the second pick. The Wolves would then be in a position to select Thabeet with the second pick, and still hold on to the sixth pick and draft Jrue Holiday or Tyreke Evans.

Memphis, meanwhile, would be able to potentially take Stephen Curry, Evans, or Holiday with the fifth pick, and some front court help (Austin Daye, Tyler Hansborugh) with the 18th.

Nets' Vince Carter and Devin Harris On the Move

The World Famous Layup Drill Rumor Mill
6/19/09 Part 2

A Friday Night edition of the Rumor Mill during the offseason can only mean there is plenty to update.

I start in New Jersey, where it looks like the Nets may be ready to blow everything up regarding their core and start over. The news starts from the Memphis Commercial Appeal, where reportedly New Jersey has approached the Memphis Grizzlies about the possibility of trading All-Star point guard Devin Harris to Memphis for the rights of the No. 2 pick.

Yahoo! Sports is also reporting the Nets are in talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers to trade Vince Carter to Cleveland for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic. The Wallace/Pavolovic combo is the same that was offered to the Suns for Shaq by Cleveland. It will be interesting to see if the Cavs opt for Carter to play alongside LeBron James. Cleveland would still need to upgrade in the front court, whether done via free agency or the draft.

New Jersey also has been in talks with the Chicago Bulls about swapping picks in the first round of next week’s draft. Chicago would give New Jersey the No. 16 and No. 26 picks for the rights to go 11th. The Bulls are interested in selecting James Johnson, however it is almost certain with his rising stock, he will not be around by the time they go at No. 16.

The Minnesota Timberwolves may have said no to the Amare Stoudemire deal, but their is still one trade that could change the way their team looks drastically on the table.

The Wolves and Grizzlies are in talks around an offer of Kevin Love and a Wolves first round pick, whether this year or next year, for the rights to pick No. 2. Minnesota would make that move to move up and select Rubio. The Wolves do not want to part with their No. 6 pick at all, and if they can land Rubio at two, they would opt for either DeMar DeRozan or Jordan Hill at six.

According to both ESPN and Yahoo! Sports, Mark Jackson, current ABC/ESPN NBA analyst, is the leading candidate to be the head coach of the Wolves when they take the court next year.

The Portland Trailblazers offseason wish list is now down to three players. Jason Kidd, Hedo Turkoglu, and Trevor Ariza.

Dallas is expected to offer Kidd what he is asking for, which is a contract in the range of $8 million dollars next season.

The Magic have come out and said they will be willing to pay Turkoglu what he wants, if he wants to return.

The Lakers, meanwhile, will offer Ariza the most they can truly afford, though it is very possible the Blazers offer could entice him. Ariza is in a situation much like James Posey was with the Celtics last season.

Where Will Amare Stoudemire Land?

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
6/19/09

A couple days after a Boston Globe report made waves around the internet regarding a possible Al Jefferson/Amare Stoudemire blockbuster, the Minnesota Timberwolves put out a formal statement to verify they were not interested in the proposed deal that would send Amare to Minnesota for the No. 6 pick along with Jefferson.

I don’t expect Jefferson to be upset, as these rumors didn’t originate with his team, however, how will Amare react now he knows Steve Kerr was trying to deal him? Unlike some veterans that have been traded before, this is foreign territory for Stat, and we have already seen him waver on his future in Phoenix a few times this offseason.

Where do the Suns turn now for a deal? Two places that come to mind for me are New York and Washington.

New York and Washington are both natural fits, because they are places that Stoudemire has said he wouldn’t mind playing at. The Knicks would have to put a combination of players together, perhaps a sign and trade of David Lee, Nate Robinson, and some cap relief (Cuttino Mobley’s contract).

Amare in NY a year early could also help snag some help next summer(i.e Lebron or Wade). As for the Wizards, we all know about the rumored deal that would send Antawn Jamison and other role players for Amare. Stay tuned…

In other Suns news, the Arizona Republic reports that Steve Kerr and Steve Nash have begun talks of a contract extension, that would lock up Nash for the remainder of his career there. Nash has made it known that he wants to remain with the team, no matter if Amare or Shaq is next to him.

The news out of Los Angeles this week has been all good, kinda. Kobe Bryant’s expected new deal ($135 Mill/five years) would make it next to impossible for the Lakers to retain both Trevor Ariza AND Lamar Odom. Both players have stated to the media their desire to return next year though.

Detroit Pistons Plans Include Ariza and Gordon

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
6/18/09

With a week to go until the NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons are reportedly making their list of free agents they would like to add to their team and checking it twice.

Rodney Stuckey seems to be a fixture for them at the point guard role, but Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince may be on the trading block. Hamilton’s shooting guard spot could be offered to Chicago’s Ben Gordon, to whom it was reported Detroit is willing to offer $11 million per season to in a multiple-year deal.

The Bulls have stated they plan on re-signing Gordon, however, how high they are willing to go up in their price remains to be seen.

Another player who will be on the Pistons radar is Trevor Ariza of the champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Ariza, as previously documented, will get looks from many teams this offseason, and Pistons management was so impressed with Ariza’s improving offensive game to go along with his defensive play, he now is someone they will consider strongly.

Ariza has said he would like to stay with his hometown Lakers, but the Lakers are also trying to re-sign Lamar Odom as well, and money, or the lack thereof, could play a factor.

In other news, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports the Grizzlies are not showing their card at all regarding the No. 2 pick. Those following the situation do not expect the Grizzlies to select Rubio at two, and Memphis may look to pick Rubio for another team.

Teams like the Blazers and Celtics have inquired about moving up in the draft, and while they may not pull the trigger on a deal prior to next Thursday, if Memphis selects Rubio, they then have an asset that teams may be more inclined to trade for.

The Golden State Warriors' draft options seem to now not include bringing in a point guard, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be busy trying to trade some.

Monta Ellis is expected to stay, but Jamal Crawford could be on the trading block if he doesn’t opt out of his current deal. Crawford, who was dealt to the Warriors from the Knicks last season, has not seen eye-to-eye with Golden State coach Don Nelson.

It is widely expected that the Warriors will look for front-court help either in the draft or via any trades, with Jordan Hill (draft), Brandon Bass (free agent), and Shawn Marion (trade) being options.

NBA Lottery Top Five Trade Rumors

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
6/17/09
As the NBA Draft draws close, it looks more apparent on how the top four picks will go. The Clippers are taking Blake Griffin, and Memphis is leaning towards Hasheem Thabeet.

The Oklahoman reports what many had assumed, that James Harden would be the man to team up with Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant in OKC, while the Sacramento Bee reports this morning Ricky Rubio is working out with the Kings today.

Of course, plenty could change between now and next week, but if I were a betting man, that would be my top four picks.

The Washington Wizards select fifth, and that’s where things get interesting. More and more sources are starting to hear the same thing revolving around the Wizards and Suns possible deal.

The trade would have the Wizards select Jordan Hill for the Suns, then later in the night trade the rights to Hill, along with a few role players to Phoenix for Amare Stoudemire. Amare has said he loves the city of Washington D.C, and fans of the Wizards reportedly are more excited about a possible deal bringing in Stat than any draft pick they take.

Even if the Suns wind up with the fifth pick, they are not looking to trade the 14th pick. Expect them to take a replacement for Grant Hill, who will likely not be back in Phoenix. James Johnson, Earl Clark and Terrence Williams are three names floating around.

The Star Ledger reports that the Nets would love to select former Syracuse guard Jonny Flynn, however most feel he will be off the board well before then. Scouts are starting to place Flynn above names such as Tyreke Evans and Brandon Jennings among point guards.

The Knicks and Raptors are both expected to look at point guards late in the top 10, and Flynn, Jrue Holiday, and Stephen Curry are among the names being discussed at those locations.

Washington Wizards Want Out of Lottery?

The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
6/16/09

There are plenty of teams looking to make moves this postseason, and some are looking to trade out of the lottery. The Toronto Star reports that the Wizards are looking to move out of the Top 10, however the offers given thus far are not impressive.

Washington is looking for help both at the point guard position as well as getting younger in the paint, and if UConn’s Hasheem Thabeet is gone by the time they select, a team may be able to get that pick.

In other news, Brandon Jennings quickly reversed his stance on his comments of Ricky Rubio. The Sacramento Bee reports Jennings cleared up his remarks he made last week at the Kings workout day, saying “”I was wrong for saying he’s all hype that’s not fair. I was wrong, I guess I just wanna compete against the best.

"But off the court the kid is a great guy. I will never disrespect him.”

Jennings, Jonny Flynn, and Jrue Holiday all shined in their workouts for Sacramento, however there has not been any indication from Sacramento who they may be leaning towards with their selection.

Jennings worked out for the Knicks yesterday, and said all the right things to the media watching him.“I really want to come here, I’m not going to lie.” “D’Antoni’s system is great for all point guards. You see what he did for Steve Nash.”

The Knicks have made it known that Stephen Curry is their priority much of the off season, though if he is gone before they pick, Jennings might get a look there.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports there have been talks internally regarding the potential of moving forward Josh Smith as the NBA Draft looms. There are plenty of teams that may be interested in a scoring post player like Smith, however what the Hawks would want in return remains to be seen.

In free agent news, The Orlando Sentinel reports that the Pistons, Hawks, and Blazers are looking to bring in Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu this offseason. Orlando is expected to make an aggressive offer to retain Hedo, but it is not a given he will return.

The Blazers are expected to also look at bringing in Trevor Ariza from the champion Lakers as well.
