Tony Stewart Will Never Win Again

So, you're a NASCAR driver racing for the top team in the sport. You haven't had that great of a first half, but it's okay. You've been in contract negotiations and you normally hit your stride during the summer months anyway. Someone comes to you and offers you the ability to own your Chevrolet team for 2009. What do you do?

Well if you're Tony Stewart you leave Joe Gibbs Racing, gain 51 percent ownership in Haas Racing, and return to Chevrolet. This is the worst career decision he has ever made. After this he will have no career. He will be only the shell of a great driver that could've been.

Obviously Stewart did not talk to previous drivers about their experiences as an owner/driver. He didn't talk to Darrell Waltrip about his winning only five races while he owned his own team, or Bill Elliott who never won a race as an owner, or even Michael Waltrip whose teams have yet to win a race. What would give Tony the notion this would be a good idea?

All the analysts are saying this decision harkens back to the day of Richard Petty owning his own team and how great that was, etc. Give me a break. Richard's family did all of the day to day work on the car and in the shop. David Pearson? No. Cale? No. Darrell? No. Dale? No.

Tony left the best team in NASCAR, which is only on the rise, to form his own race team with a manufacturer who is cutting back spending by $10 billion this coming year. Toyota's money will continue to rise in the sport while Chevrolet, Ford, and Chrysler's will continue to decline. Why not stay with Toyota?

I just don't understand the advantages of this decision for Stewart. Is he selfish and greedy, and wants all the spotlight to himself? If this is the case, I can understand. I just don't get why he didn't at least look at two of the sport's great drivers and realize their ownership mistakes, and not make them himself.

But alas, we have witnessed Tony's last championship and possibly his last win as well, until he goes back to driving for a team, much like Elliott did when he sold his team to Ray Evernham.

Top Five Heisman Candidates and Five Others You Should Care About

This is a list of the top Heisman candidates for 2008. Some of these guys you should know by now and I'm sure you can figure out why they will be Heisman candidates so you'll have to excuse me if I don't care to write too much about people who you have been hearing about all summer long (Tebow, Wells).

Top Five Heisman Trophy Candidates

1. Tim Tebow, QB, Florida: What to say here? Last year's Heisman winner should be the top Heisman candidate going into this season. He beat the same guys last year so why shouldn't he start out at number one this year? Also, look for Tebow to be better because of Emmanuel Moody, RB, taking off some of the load, and the return of Percy Harvin. He will help Tebow more than hurt him, in Tebow's try to win another Heisman.

2. Bennie Wells, RB, Ohio State: Tons of yards last year, something like 1,600. Look for more of the same from Wells this season because of their schedule.

They only have two difficult games all season, USC and Wisconsin. They will lose to USC. He will run for 150 yards or more in every game except for these two. He has the best chance to beat Tebow because there is a good chance he will rush for over 2000 yards this season, which is almost an automatic Heisman in college, that is unless Tebow is around.

3. Chase Daniels, QB, Missouri: Chase Daniels is a phenomenal player for Missouri, and all eyes will be on him this season to repeat his season from a year ago. Missouri has the best chance out of these five to be undefeated at the end of the regular season. His chances will come down to the championship game against Oklahoma. Beating Oklahoma plus undefeated season equal Heisman Trophy.

4. Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia: Knowshon is the best RB in the SEC. He is the second best RB in America. For him to have a chance at winning the Heisman he must rush for over 1500 yards this season because Wells will rush for more.

He will be playing against stiffer competition than Wells and yards will be harder to come by for Moreno. Also, Caleb King will take away some of his touches this season. However, if Georgia goes unbeaten or only has one loss, look for Moreno to be at the top of the list.

5. Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma: Oklahoma must get by Texas for Bradford to have a shot at the title. What would catapult Bradford to the top of the list would be a showdown between him and Daniels in the Big 12 championship game as a lot of pundits are predicting.

Bradford threw for more yards than Daniels and more touchdowns, however was not named All-Big 12. With the exception of Texas there is no reason Oklahoma should not go undefeated. Look for Bradford once again to lead the Big 12 in passing yards and TDs this season.

Five others you should care about

1. Rudy Carpenter, QB, Arizona State: Put bluntly, if ASU does not beat Georgia and USC you can drop his name from this list. BabyTate can say all he wants about how great Carpenter is, however if he does not win his two high profile games this season there is no reason for him to be on the list.

These defenses will be two of the best in the nation, and if ASU can get past them look for Carpenter's name to jump up to the candidates list.

2. Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech: News flash, Graham Harrell will throw for 5,000 yards passing. The question will be will his defense help him out. If his defense does not perform this season as many people are predicting it will, then his time on the list will be short lived. He will put up some great numbers, just like his offense does every year, but will it be enough to win games?

3. Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia: Stafford's WRs will have to improve this season to make him a contender. His WRs were not dependable last season which led to a low completion percentage.

Also, the style of offense Georgia runs does not lend itself to gaudy numbers for its QBs. Also, there is this other guy in the backfield named Knowshon Moreno who will take a lot of the Heisman spotlight.

4. Noel Devine, RB, West Virginia: Noel Devine, not Pat White will be the Mountaineer possibility for the Heisman trophy. White will not put up the numbers at QB to compete, but Devine who is an excellent return man and RB should be able to put up the numbers to allow for his addition to the Heisman list.

He will rush for over 1,500 yards this season. But because he is playing lesser competition than RBs like Wells and Moreno, West Virginia will need to go undefeated for Devine to have a shot at the Heisman.

5. T.J. Yates, QB, North Carolina: This is my sleeper pick for Heisman or even Heisman candidate. Yates threw for over 2,500 yards last season for a 4-8 UNC team which lost six games by a touchdown or less. Look for the Tar Heels and all of their returning starters including T.J. Yates to turn some of those Ls into Ws.

If North Carolina is able to win the Coastal, Yates will be a major part of the equation. Whether he will out shine Cullen Harper, Clemson, and Sean Glennon, Virginia Tech, remains to be seen. But look for Yates and the Heels to make this an interesting season for the ACC and a record breaking year for him at UNC.

NOTE: Rudy Carpenter makes the list because I don't want to hear BabyTate complain about how great he is, and how he is so much better than Matthew Stafford.

Also, no one from Clemson is on this list because they will all take away from one another. Both backs will have 1,000 yard seasons, and Harper will throw for over 2,500 yards making him a possible addition to the list.

A.J. Mealor's 2008 College Football Preview: Part Two—ACC

Let's begin the breakdown of the conferences by looking at the ACC. Each conference article will include its predicted standings, champion, a breakdown of each team, key players to watch, and big games to mark on your calendar. Each team breakdown will include its projected record, schedule, returning starters, and a small outlook on each team.

ACC

This should be an interesting year for ACC football. This will be the year that the ACC reasserts itself in the college football world, overtaking the Big Ten and possibly the Pac-10 in the conference standings.

This will be driven by the two powerhouses of the conference, Clemson and Virginia Tech, the reassertion of power by Florida State and Miami, the continued growth at Wake Forest, and the dark horse for the Coastal title, North Carolina. All six of these teams will be ranked in the top 20 at some point this season, and possibly the top 15.

The ACC will overtake the Big East in the drama category, as several teams will scramble to win the Coastal division crown. The Atlantic champion will be Clemson, followed closely by Wake Forest. The Coastal champion will be North Carolina, followed by Virginia Tech and Miami.

However, each of these teams has holes to fill, and it will be interesting to see how these matchups play out this fall.

Atlantic

1. Clemson: 10-2 (Offense 8, Defense 8, ST 2)

Clemson is returning several explosive starters on offense, including the RB threats of James Davis and C.J. Spiller, and QB Cullen Harper. These three did not return because they would not have been picked in the NFL draft—they returned to bring an ACC Championship to Clemson, and possibly a National Title.

The problem I see with this team is the offensive line, where they have to replace four starters. For this reason I see the Tigers losing their opener against Alabama. It takes a few weeks of play for an offensive line to come together, and with them opening up against an improved Tide team in Atlanta, I don't see them gelling enough to stop Alabama's defense.

However, they have several games to get their act together afterward before what will be a great game in Winston-Salem against Wake Forest on Oct. 9.

Clemson will also have to replace two linebackers and a second-round CB. However, Tommy Bowden's recruits such as Scotty Cooper should be able to fill these holes nicely.

But a Clemson schedule would not be complete without one letdown in the ACC, and that loss will come at the hands of the improved Florida State Seminoles on Nov. 8. I see an ACC Championship and BCS bowl in the future of the Tigers—as long as they don't let Tommy coach too much.

Aug. 30 Alabama L Oct. 18 Georgia Tech W

Sep. 6 Citadel W Nov. 1 @ Boston College W

Sep. 13 NC State W Nov. 8 @ Florida State L

Sep. 20 SC State W Nov. 15 Duke W

Sep. 27 Maryland W Nov. 22 @ Virginia W

Oct. 9 @ Wake Forest W Nov. 29 South Carolina W

2. Wake Forest: 10-2 (Offense 5, Defense 9, ST 2)

Wake Forest will be led by their defense and QB Riley Skinner. The Demon Deacons are returning nine players on defense, including All-ACC CB Alphonso Smith and second team LB Aaron Curry. Look for these two to lead a stout defense as they attempt to return to the ACC Championship game this season.

Their season will hinge on their performance against Clemson at home. This game will determine the winner of the Atlantic division.

Wake Forest will have to get over the loss of All-ACC center Steve Justice and WR Kenneth Moore to avoid going down in Tallahassee early in the season. However, with Skinner returning along with RB Josh Adams, plus the emergence of RB Brandon Pendergrass, I look for Wake Forest to assemble its best team yet.

Wake Forest, like Clemson, will have to deal with the loss of four starters on the offensive line. This could prove costly against FSU in their third game of the season.

This team will be helped by its clutch kicker Sam Swank in what looks to be a tight and exciting race in the ACC this season.

Aug. 30 @ Baylor W Oct. 25 @ Miami (FL) L

Sept. 6 Mississippi W Nov. 1 Duke W

Sept. 20 @ FSU W Nov. 8 Virginia W

Sept. 27 Navy W Nov. 15 NC State W

Oct. 9 Clemson L Nov. 22 Boston College W

Oct. 18 @ Maryland W Nov. 29 Vanderbilt W

3. Florida State: 9-3 (Offense 7, Defense 8, ST 1)

I am not an FSU fan, but I am really pumped up about this year's Seminole squad. They return eight starters on a defense which could be one of the best defenses in the country, if not the best.

Jimbo Fisher will be in his second year as offensive coordinator, and first as head-coach-to-be. Look for the offense to be more explosive this season, as Fisher will be able to concentrate on tooling an offense for only one QB. The team will also become more accustomed to his playcalling and schemes.

FSU returns three offensive linemen, which is always a plus. Hopefully they will be able to open up some holes for senior RB Antone Smith. Last season FSU ranked eighth in the ACC in rushing offense, which is abysmal.

The major question mark for this team has to be the play of unproven senior QB Drew Weatherford. He must be more consistent with his passing, and his TD total must go up for FSU to compete against Clemson, Virginia Tech, Miami, and Wake Forest.

This season will be a modest improvement over last season's seven wins, but the possibility is there for this team to win 10 games if Weatherford comes around.

Sept. 6 W. Carolina W Oct. 25 Virginia Tech L

Sept. 13 Chattanooga W Nov. 1 @ Georgia Tech W

Sept. 20 Wake Forest L Nov. 8 Clemson W

Sept. 27 Colorado W Nov. 15 Boston College W

Oct. 4 @ Miami(FL) W Nov. 22 @ Maryland W

Aug. 28 Jacksonville St. W Oct. 18 @ Clemson L

Sept. 6 @ Boston Col. L Oct. 25 Virginia W

Sept. 13 @ VA Tech L Nov. 1 Florida St. L

Sept. 20 Miss. St. L Nov. 8 @ North Carolina L

Oct. 4 Duke W Nov. 20 Miami (FL) L

Oct. 11 Gardner-Webb W Nov. 29 @ Georgia L

6. Duke: 2-10 (Offense 7, Defense 10, ST 2)

Duke will remain a bottom feeder for at least the next two years, but these other teams need to take notice that David Cutcliffe's team will not remain there. They are beginning to get the athletes in place, and the current players in shape, to play an SEC brand of football in the ACC.

If a team does not prepare for this Blue Devil team, they will stumble and maybe even fall once or twice. However, I don't see that occurring until Cutcliffe gets more of his type of players at Duke. They do return nineteen starters off a team that finished 1-10 last season.

Look for the Blue Devils to make some noise against Virginia, Vanderbilt, and NC State. Cutcliffe may only win two games in his first year at Duke, but it could be three or four depending on how this team responds.

Aug. 30 James Madison W Oct. 25 @ Vanderbilt W

Sept. 6 Northwestern L Nov. 1 @ Wake Forest L

Sept. 13 Navy L Nov. 8 NC State L

Sept. 20 Virginia L Nov. 15 @ Clemson L

Oct. 4 @ Georgia Tech L Nov. 22 @ Virginia Tech L

Oct. 18 Miami (FL) L Nov. 29 North Carolina L

Key Players

Offense

1. James Davis, RB, Clemson

2. C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson

3. Riley Skinner, QB, Wake Forest

4. Jason Fox, T, Miami

5. Preston Parker, WR, FSU

Defense

1. Victor Harris, CB, Virginia Tech

2. Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech

3. Myron Rolle, SS, FSU

4. Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest

5. Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

Games to Watch

Sep. 20 Wake Forest @ Florida St.

Sep. 20 Virginia Tech @ North Carolina

Oct. 9 Clemson @ Wake Forest

Nov. 8 Clemson @ Florida St.

Nov. 13 Virginia Tech @ Miami

These five games will determine the winners of each division. They will also show whether Miami and FSU have made it back to the top of the league, and if North Carolina truly is a contender in the conference race.

A.J. Mealor's 2008 College Football Preview: Part One—Conference Rankings

Introduction

This will be a 12 to 13-part 2008 College Football preview. It will discuss each of the major conferences in depth, the major games to be played each week, bowl predictions, my Top 25, and a Heisman watch, among other things. This may take two weeks to complete, so please bear with me.

I am sure I will say some things that will surprise you, and definitely some things you will disagree with. For the record, I am an avid Georgia and SEC fan, but I will do my best to put away these biases for the sake of the articles.

The first thing that will be discussed in this first section, which is also my first post, is the Conference Power Rankings.

Conference Power Rankings

1. SEC

I don't think I need to say much here. The past two National Champions have been from the SEC (Florida and LSU), and the SEC has excelled in its last few BCS appearances. They look poised for another great year with Florida and Georgia leading the charge.

LSU and Auburn are not far behind them, however. The best thing to happen to LSU in the offseason was the dismissal of Ryan Perrilloux, who was a virus on the team. I see Auburn as the dark horse of this league with a stout defense, a strong running game, and a new OC.

2. Big 12

It is no longer Oklahoma, Texas, and the little 10. Texas Tech is emerging as a team beyond its formidable offense. This is the year for them to make a move in the conference with the return of Graham Harrell (QB) and Michael Crabtree (WR).

As for the North, Missouri is going to be a powerhouse this year, but Kansas will take a step back as Colorado and Nebraska begin to rise.

3. Pac-10

USC is still a step ahead the rest of this conference. However, Oregon and Arizona St. are charging towards them and closing the gap in a hurry. Rick Neuheisel will be trying to right UCLA's ship as well.

Oregon lost their QB and RB but return many starters, and I look for them to make some noise. Also, Arizona St. will have the ability to make some noise nationally for the conference if they are able to take down Georgia on Sep. 20.

4. ACC

Yes, people are going to think I am crazy for ranking the ACC over the Big Ten, but I see several teams making huge leaps in this conference, including a resurgence out of Miami and Florida State, and a great season in Chapel Hill.

Clemson and Virginia Tech will lead the pack this season, but Wake Forest and the aforementioned three will make this a great year for football in the ACC. Duke will still be terrible, but they will begin to play a lot tougher now that David Cutcliffe is there.

5. Big Ten

The Big Ten will be worse this season than it was last year. Several teams will be down, including Michigan and Illinois, and Ohio State and Wisconsin will have inflated win totals because of their weaker conference brethren. I think Michigan State will take a step forward this year in the conference. Ohio State will have the opportunity to prove themselves and the conference early on against USC.

6. Big East

Last comes the Big East, led by a strong West Virginia team and followed closely by South Florida. However, after these two teams there is a steep dropoff in the conference. Pittsburgh might step up this year to be the number three team in this conference.

As we have seen, there is little to zero stability in this conference, with the exception of West Virginia at the top of the mountain and Syracuse at the bottom.

South Florida will be a team worth watching this year, especially when Kansas travels to Tampa Sep. 12. The rest of the conference will be utter chaos.
