Rest Easy Packer Fans, Green Bay's Better Half More Than Compensates

I have not seen a more dejected group of fans after their team shut out the opponents, 23-0 no less.

But following the Packers-Lions game on Sunday, there were cries of anguish from the Green Bay loyal.

Complaints ranged from the offensive line giving up five sacks to an inept Lions defensive line and Ryan Grant has continued to under perform compared to his 2007 season. Aaron Rodgers could not muster a touchdown after the first quarter and the penalties continued to plague the offensive line.

Apparently, defense isn't so much a part of the team anymore.

So what if Calvin Johnson wasn't in the game. This is not the same Lions team as last year; Detroit averaged 20.6 points for the first five games. Those five games were against the third, fifth, ninth, 13th, and 18th ranked defenses. Johnson is a freak and is a big part of the offense, but not all of it.

Bringing up the fact Matthew Stafford was not playing is invalid. Despite holding the title of number one overall draft pick, Stafford is a below average quarterback.

What the Green Bay Packer defense did do was stop Detroit at every turn. No, the Lions do not have the most explosive offense, but give the Packers credit for what they accomplished. They went and did their job exactly how they were supposed to do.

Daunte Culpepper and Drew Stanton are not good quarterbacks. Green Bay reinforced the notion as they forced the quarterbacks to combine for 11/25, 105 yards, and 3 INT. The Packers' defensive front seven complimented the secondary by racking up five sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

Atari Bigby certainly provided a huge impact to the defense. Defensive coordinator Dom Capers said Bigby's absence meant a more conservative pass rush. It showed, there was no Al Harris yelling at a bewildered Derrick Martin, the quarterback had to move besides when he felt like it, and Bigby even picked up an interception in the red zone.

The defense executed during the game as well. Of the 13 penalties accumulated by Green Bay, only three were on the defense. Surprisingly none were on Harris or Woodson. That may have broke a streak.

It seems Dom Capers utilized the bye week effectively. Fans knew the transition to the 3-4 would take some time, but this defense looked good even just in Week Six.

As I mentioned in a previous article, Clay Matthews is filling a vital part of the defense. Outside linebacker was a question mark before the season, but between Matthews and Kampman is showing signs of becoming effective, it is encouraging.

It also can not be understated how important Cullen Jenkins is to the defense. So far, the Packers have kept relatively healthy. Sunday showed the capability of when the 11 starters are 100 percent.

Last year, our rushing defense killed us. Continually late in games last year, teams moved past defenders at will. This year, the Packers have just cracked the top half of rushing defenses despite playing against some of the better running backs. The secondary has continued their affinity for plucking the ball away, tied for third in the league in interceptions.

I don't know about the rest of my fellow fans, but that makes me pretty damn happy.

All in all, last Sunday the defense looked good. Really good.

Good enough to carry a team by themselves.

The offensive line is a complete mess, but if the defense plays the way they played against Detroit, they have time to clean up the offensive line woes.

So be patient Packer fans, there is a rock this team can lean on while fixing the leaks.

Clay Matthews' Roar Making Waves For The Green Bay Packer Defense

For a defense in the middle of a transition, perhaps it makes sense a rookie has thrived early in the new system.

Clay Matthews did not have an official start until the game against Detroit Sunday, but he already leads the team in sacks. Matthews also provided a huge emotional boost early for the Packers.

Bursting out of the gates, Matthews tackled Lions running back Kevin Smith for losses on the first two plays. Matthews sacked Culpepper on the Lions next possession, and came up big when he was the first Packer on Smith on a crucial Lions fourth and one.

Then the first quarter ended.

At a position where the Packers have a couple of converted defensive ends (Kampman, Thompson), two backup linebackers (Poppinga, Jones), Matthews has stepped up into a role which was an unknown before the season started.

Back in April, I wondered if Matthews was worth what Thompson traded to nab him. While it is still too early to tell, Matthews could not have made a more noticeable impact as outside linebacker.

Leading the team with his three sacks, Matthews has given glimpses into what Dom Capers' defense future may hold.

Matthews had the memorable strip on Adrian Peterson to keep the Packers close in week four. He has not only pressured the quarterback (Matthews was also near Stanton when he threw the interception to Harris), but effective in coverage as well, knocking away three passes so far.

The complete way Matthews has played bodes well for the Packers. Playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 requires players to be extremely versatile. Players need to have the power to rush the quarterback while utilizing their speed and agility in coverage against running backs and tight ends.

Even extremely talented players such as Aaron Kampman need to adjust to cover all the skills required. Kampman is in a process to playing in coverage, Brady Poppinga lacks the power to consistently the quarterback.

Side note: There already is a huge fuss about Kampman's sack Sunday because he had his hand down before the snap. Yes, Kampman should be used more in this manner, but do not expect Capers to alter his plan with Kampman much.

What is more important is he got his first of the season, and was seen smiling after the game. Hopefully, his confidence will move up a notch and we can stop listening to every announcer spewing the same "he looks lost" crap. Of course he's lost, he's never done this before. Give him time, Kampman is worth it.

Green Bay seems like a perfect fit for Matthews from a hair perspective as well. His long, flowing locks match Harris, Bigby, Barnett, and Hawk. I won't lie, after seeing his lion's mane in the preseason, he has become a fan favorite of mine. I've heard CM3 as a nickname for Matthews, but the mane offers so many more interesting possibilities.

I have also taken a liking to Matthews for his strong work ethic. He walked-on to USC as a linebacker after not receiving an offer from any university. The intensity of his play has continued at the pro level. He never gives up on a play, the pinnacle of that persistence coming on his touchdown.

Outside linebacker is a crucial position to fill because of the aforementioned versatility. Clay Matthews has a real chance to become a superstar in Green Bay if he continues his high level of play. Locking down the left side for the linebackers is an important part of the defense as Kampman works out the kinks of the right.

If Matthews can build upon his early success, it will answer the preseason's biggest question and go a long way for the Packers making the playoffs.

Donald Driver's Perserverance Not Just Part Of The Job

When Ron Wolf held the 213th pick in 1999 Draft, he might have known he was getting a special player. Wolf probably did not expect that player, however, to break records held by the 90-year-old franchise.

Once the ball softly rests in Donald Driver's hands for the first time Sunday, he will break the record for the most receptions in Packer history. The reception, which will be number 596, will move him ahead of Sterling Sharpe.

The game against the Detroit Lions will be Driver's 150th game, all of them as a Packer.

Through those 149 games, he has become a fan favorite by playing with heart. At a position where others are outspoken and out of control, Driver has been a steady companion to his quarterback.

Driver fights for yards instead of with teammates, and his showboating is held a small first down celebration. It is obvious he plays with great passion, passion kindled during Driver's childhood in Houston.

Donald Jerome Driver grew up in harsh conditions with his mother and four siblings. So despite how hard a middle linebacker lays into him on the field, he has already experienced the worst off of it.

"There's nothing out there that can hurt me worse than what I went through as a kid," Driver said in a 2007 interview with ESPN. "Living in U-Haul trucks in and out of hotels...sleeping on the street. I know how that feels."

He told ESPN he made a promise to his brothers and family he would pull them out of poverty. Driver kept the focus through college before making his way to the Green Bay Packers.

Driver actually had a more accomplished track and field resume than he did in football while at Alcorn State. He could have qualified for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney as a high jumper. While Driver lettered in football as well as track and field, he only had 88 receptions while at the university.

Somehow through those 88 receptions, Wolf took notice and used one of their seventh round picks to nab the six-foot-wide receiver.

"When the Green Bay Packers called on the phone, that was maybe the biggest turning point in my life because I knew now I had the opportunity to do something no one else in my family could do," Driver said.

Driver's career started out like most other seventh round draft picks, accumulating 37 receptions through his first three years, and making little impact. After Antonio Freeman and Bill Schroeder left the Packers, however, Driver stepped into a leading role with a 1000 plus yard season in 2002.

Since then, he has steadily been a force. Driver has never had 100 receptions in a season, but if he holds pace in 2009, it will mark the seventh year of a 1000 plus yard season.

Throughout his career, Driver assets have proved invaluable. He has never complained about his situation, even when young studs like Javon Walker and Greg Jennings saw more passes their way. Instead, he has mentored those young wideouts, and set the mentality of the position for the team.

In 2007, media took notice of the hunger of the Packers receivers in their yards after catch. Koren Robinson lauded the veteran Driver as the best in cranking out a few more yards.

"I don't want to toot my own horn, but I'm pretty nice," Robinson said. "But I would say Drive."

"Those are my boys. They're watching out for the old man," said Driver.

The mentality to never give up has not escaped Driver off the field, either. He founded the Donald Driver Foundation in 2000, which helps homeless families and the education problems they face. Driver's mother, Faye, has been his inspiration to never give up.

"Never give up because of what people say," Driver said to ESPN. "Because I look at my mom and she never gave up. You have to survive."

So when Aaron Rodgers reaches back to fire the ball today toward Double D's direction, it will be more than a number. It is a statement, and an echo of perseverance of what Donald Driver has been about in his life.

It could not have happened to a better person.

St. Louis' Playoff Hopes Run Through Ryan Franklin

Albert Pujols had analysts talking Triple Crown, Chris Carpenter is as dominant as ever, and Matt Holliday gives these St. Louis Cardinals real playoff potential.

But, despite all of the hoopla surrounding these Cardinals megastars, none are quite as important to the Redbirds' 2009 World Series dreams as Ryan Franklin.

Yes, Pujols, Carpenter, and Holliday may be better at what they do, but without Franklin this team falls apart.

With the addition of Holliday, Mark DeRosa, and Julio Lugo, Cardinal fans have witnessed their team can actually win without El Hombre. Carpenter, Adam Wainwright, and Joel Pineiro have given the Cardinals a terrific set of starting pitching, combining for 31 wins.

Ryan Franklin has done it by himself.

He has carried the entire bullpen and, in effect, the Cardinals to a current first-place tie in the NL Central.

Since Wainwright's brilliant work in the 2006 season, the role of closer has been a mess. Jason Isringhausen was either injured or ineffective, leaving La Russa to choose between rookies Jason Motte and Chris Perez. Neither have worked out so far.

The Cardinals had an astonishing 31 blown saves in 2008, good enough for the worst in baseball. St. Louis still managed a 86-76 record for the year, finishing just four games out of the wild card position.

Enter Ryan Franklin.

Not only as he provided stability as the closer, he has excelled in the role. Currently tied for fifth in the NL for saves (24), he has only squandered two opportunities this season.

He has been the man Tony La Russa has leaned on to keep the Cardinals in games, breaking the one-innings norm for closers in today's game. Six of his 24 saves have been more than three outs, most of cleaning up another relievers mess in the eighth.

The frightening aspect of this is there is no heir apparent if Franklin were to succumb to an injury. There are currently three other pitchers in the Cardinals bullpen that have an ERA under five, and only one would be considered to replace Franklin.

Trever Miller has an impressive 2.22 ERA, but is an exclusive lefty specialist. Right-handers are batting .371 with three homers on Miller.

Rookie Blake Hawksworth has pitched less than 20 innings this season, but has shown potential. However, putting the rookie into the closing role would likely lead to Motte/Perez results rather than Wainwright results.

Kyle McClellan would be the most logical choice from the current roster, with nine holds and the most complete bullpen pitcher. However, his two blown saves in three chances leave the question of whether he could handle the role.

Basically, it leaves Franklin to continue his All-Star pace for the Cardinals. He has the material, as Nathaniel Stoltz ranked Franklin curveball the most effective in the major leagues, and his fastball sixth. Franklin has struck out 30 while only walking eight, and has the lowest ERA of any closer, AL or NL.

So far, Franklin has been the difference between last year's Cardinals and this year's team. To have any chance to reach the World Series, Ryan Franklin must remain healthy and dominant.

Green Bay Packers Offseason Report: Rookies Take the Field

It's May, and there are finally Green Bay Packers playing football. Well, sort of. At least they are practicing.

Packer fans made it through February, March, and April without tearing each other apart on fundamental disagreements of our polarizing general manager, Ted Thompson. We watched in absolute disbelief as Thompson traded up into the first round of the draft, the first time Green Bay had two first-round picks since 1993.

For the first time in a while, Packer fans seemed to come together. Those first-rounders and the rest of the draftees were at rookie orientation this past week.

Here's what has had my attention since the draft.

Quinn Johnson Likes Hitting People

The fifth-round fullback enjoys knocking linebackers flat on their backs. In fact, he likes it more than scoring himself.

"I know it sounds crazy, but I really do," Johnson said. "Yes sir."

You're not crazy, Quinn; you're just the player I'm looking for. This is exactly what the Packers need: a William Henderson-type fullback to plow the way on short-yardage situations. Is it crazy I can't get enough of this quote?

"I just love the contact."

Collins Is Working Out

Nick Collins said he had no plans to attend the Packers' offseason program, complaining last month that contract negotiations weren't in progress.

Collins has started since he was drafted in 2005, and now he wants his payday after a great season. I think he deserves it, but I wasn't happy to hear those comments.

Head coach Mike McCarthy then told reporters Collins had worked with the new coaches, including Dom Capers.

This is fantastic. It will be hard enough to try to go from the 4-3 to a 3-4, and if Collins had missed most of the offseason, he would have been even further behind.

It also raises a couple of questions. Is Collins in camp now because he is getting what he wants? While I understand those who criticize Collins, you have to understand this is the NFL. The average life span for players is short, and they want to be compensated.

Hopefully Collins realizes the importance of being in camp as a defensive player this year and money isn't the only driving force. Hopefully, both sides can work something out, because the depth isn't pretty after Nick.

Undrafted Signings

Looks like Jersey Al's theory of Thompson being kidnapped looks more and more likely every day. After the draft ended, the Packers suddenly signed 11 undrafted players, including four wide receivers and two tight ends. That's the TT we know and love.

One of those wide receivers, Jamarko Simmons from Western Michigan, broke a bunch of receiving records set by some guy named Greg Jennings. Simmons also said Jennings was a big reason he chose the Packers, and with a 6'2", 231-pound frame, I'd say he is welcome to participate.

Offensive Line Setup

After the draft, McCarthy said Josh Sitton will play right guard. Assuming Daryn Colledge continues at left guard, Cliffy at tackle, and Jason Spitz at center, that only leaves right tackle open. Evidently, the job competition is between T.J. Lang, Tony Moll, and Allen Barbre.

Jamon Meredith is seemingly out of the running because McCarthy and the staff evaluated him for the left tackle position, giving Chad Clifton an heir apparent. Hopefully, one of the tackles steps up and wins the position.

This is one spot I'm a little nervous about. Mark Tauscher has held this spot down for a long time, and now there isn't anyone who stands out.

Thompson Really Did Have a Nice Draft

I wrote a while ago about whether Clay Matthews was worth the deal on draft day. I still believe it was perhaps too much, but Thompson still provided enough depth on Day Two.

We got our two impact players in the first round, but also picked up guys in areas with veterans. Offensive tackle and cornerback were both addressed and really minimized the impact of losing the second- and third-round picks.

Raji Makes Things Interesting

Here is what I'm excited about: the possibilities B.J. Raji opens. The Packers already have him practicing both of the ends and the nose in the 3-4, and having him versatile enough to move all over the line will be tremendous. Raji can either rotate with Ryan Pickett, or the Packers can load the line up with both of the big men.

Raji is strong and quick enough to really be a special player in the 3-4. Thank goodness Dom Capers will be the one to guide him through it.

Greg Jennings Continues to Be Awesome

Bulls-Celtics: Game Six, Where John Salmons Finally Happens

John Salmons had become nothing more than an afterthought for the first five games on the Bulls-Celtics series.

It was disheartening for Bulls fans. Since the trade for Salmons and Brad Miller, the Bulls had found new life.

They not only fought they way into the playoffs, but were contending for the sixth seed in the playoffs.

Salmons was not only a big reason for the resurgence—he was playing at a superstar level.

In March, he averaged a .500 field-goal percentage, .435 three-point percentage, and an .880 free-throw percentage.

Yeah, it was downright amazing.

Now the Bulls not only had Gordon as a scorer, but with Rose developing as a slasher, Salmons provided a third option. It was something Bulls fans had seen with Luol Deng several years ago in the playoff series against the Heat.

It was something they sorely needed.

Then, just as suddenly as he appeared, Salmons had a disappearing act in the Celtics series. The Bulls had to rely on the rookie Rose, less of a scorer and more of a passer, and Gordon, a maddeningly streaky shooter.

Salmons shot 37 percent from the floor and 25 percent from behind the arch, in the first five games.

The Bulls had lost their versatility.

Finally, Salmons showed up in game six scoring 35 points. His five three-pointers and 60 minutes of play were huge for the Bulls. He scored from inside and outside, finally stepping up for Chicago.

Rajon Rondo is a Punk

I thought about just having that headline, and no copy. I really think it would have worked.

The title is self explanatory, Rajon Rondo is classless. The worst part?

The league lets him get away with it.

Is this series alone, he has tripped Kirk Hinrich, slammed Miller across the face, and now has nearly thrown Hinrich into the stands in Game Six. There is a difference between playing tough and playing dirty. Rondo has jumped said line.

Both on the first Hinrich incident and the Miller foul, Rajon Rondo wasn't even trying to touch the ball. He was trying to inflict damage any way he could.

It was especially telling when Rondo smacked Miller. Miller had the ball about four feet from his face, nowhere near where Rondo's hand was. It was in intentional, dirty, and clearly a flagrant foul.

If you read Bill Simmons' article about this series, you know how much he hates Joakim Noah. Speaking of which, I bet Simmons loved Noah's dunk to foul out Pierce. I know I did.

I have the exact same feelings about Rondo. He has this smug, arrogant look like he is the best player in the game.

The problem is that he plays with all of the confidence that Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen have, and none of the humility. Rondo acts as though he has been in the league for years and deserves better.

Are we sure Spike Lee isn't filming a new movie?

This series is surreal. The fact that it just keeps getting better is amazing. Did anyone think this wouldn't go to Game Seven? I mean, it just wouldn't feel right if we somehow stopped short at six.

There have been more story lines in this series than the rest of the NBA playoffs combined. It is almost unfathomable, but we have forgotten about LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

Derrick Rose's arrival in Game One, Pierce/Allen and Gordon trading incredible shots, Ray Allen game-winning shot in Game Two, and now Game Six's three-overtime marathon have left me exhausted.

Hell, Kevin Garnett's sidelines antics have drawn more attention than Rockets-Blazers series.

Seriously, the biggest story besides this was Dwight Howard getting suspended one game for a thrown elbow. That story died once the Magic won, and Bulls-Celtics jumped eight more levels of excitement.

Keys to Game Seven

The Bulls need to limit their turnovers. There are times Rose looks like a confident, able point guard. Then there are the moments where he looks like a lost rookie. If Rose can limit his turnovers (he has 32 this series), the Bulls can continue to be competitive.

Tyrus Thomas needs to build upon his impressive end of the regular season. Thomas, who was a cranking out a double-double nearly every other game near the end of the season, hasn't been a factor this series. He has been mostly cold so far.

The Celtics need to take advantage with Pierce and Allen. Set screens to switch off an Rose, a smaller defender, and Gordon, a horrible defender. Vinny Del Negro finally double-teamed Pierce in overtime Thursday, but that is about it. Pierce and Allen need to exploit the Bulls when they only have one defender.

Time to take a nap and wake up Sunday night.

Joe Thurston, Brian Barden More Than Fill Void at Third For Cardinals

When Troy Glaus went down this winter with shoulder surgery, Cardinals fans started to count the days until his return.

There was much speculation as to who could start in absence of Glaus, and names such as Joe Mather and David Freese arose. Mather ended up being optioned to AAA, and Freese has only managed 19 at-bats and a couple of hits.

But the dynamic rookie duo of Joe Thurston and Brian Barden have excelled so far this season, leaving myself and other Cardinal fans worrying less and less about Glaus' return date.

Their offense has been overshadowed by Albert Pujols and the rest of the Cardinals hot start. However, a big reason St. Louis has scored more runs than any other National League team is because of the young tandem.

Thurston brings the speed and energy. I love the guy—it may be because of how he reminds me of David Eckstein when drawing walks. He never stops hustling. ESPN showed Carlos Beltran stepping on Molina's foot a thousand times, but it was Thurston who ran to the mound to throw Beltran out.

His speed has helped him on the bases as well. Thurston has five doubles, a triple, and a stolen base so far this year.

He has a few hiccups on defense this year, two errors in 33 chances, but he has made several spectacular plays as well. His aggressive defense includes playing in on the grass and has resulted in Thurston starting two double plays.

While Thurston brings speed, Barden brings power. Barden has three homers in just 31 at-bats, including a game-winner in Arizona. "Mr. Clutch" also had a game-winning pinch hit against the Pirates back on April 9th.

The two have a combined stat line of: .364 BA, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 16 R, 10 BB, 13 K.

Compare that with other third basemen:

Michael Young: .280 BA, 5 HR, 11 RBI, 15 R, 7 BB, 18 K
Mike Lowell: .324 BA, 4 HR, 22 RBI, 9 R, 3 BB, 10 K
Evan Longoria: .358 BA, 5 HR, 16 RBI, 11 R, 7 BB, 14 K
Chipper Jones: .333 BA, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 10 R, 4 BB, 11 K
David Wright: .271 BA, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 13 R, 11 BB, 23 K

Joe Barden and Brian Thurston look like a monster. If I heard Dan McLaughlin right, the two have the two highest OBP for rookies. I wouldn't be surprised, these two rookies have even overshadowed all the hype and play by Colby Rasmus.

Another thing is the fact that, Barden plays second base. The ability to switch over to third has been impressive.

The experience and confidence the rookie duo has had so far will be extremely valuable once Glaus comes back. If Glaus struggles, or there are other injuries to the Cardinals lineup, these two will be able to fill the holes when needed.

And the best part of all of this? La Russa gets to play with matchups because Thurston bats left and Barden bats right.

Green Bay's Selection of Clay Matthews Four Years in the Making

Clay Matthews may not know how special he is.

After four years of trading down in the draft, Ted Thompson actually moved up into the first round. It was only the second time he has ever traded up since becoming the Packers general manager.

To the surprise, and seemingly approval of most Packer fans, Thompson's moves on Day One give the team the opportunity to add two early impact players on defense.

It is all a result of the previous years of trading down and providing depth.

Looking at the recent swap with the Patriots, it seems the Packers gave up quite a bit. Just to move up 15 spots, Green Bay traded their second-round pick and both their third rounders to grab Clay Matthews.

When I first saw the details of the trade, I was horrified. But one thing that always keeps me calm is knowing Dom Capers is the draft room; if Capers thought it was worth getting Matthews, then that was good enough for me.

Of course, also consoling is the fact that the roster that Thompson has put together is filled with players from previous drafts: Pat Lee, Jordy Nelson, Josh Sitton, Brandon Jackson, the list goes on and on. The hit taken with Matthews can be absorbed considering the years of build-up through previous drafts.

Do I think the Packers gave up too much to get to Matthews? On paper, and right now, yes. But we have no idea how good Matthews will be. Considering what they gave up to get them, Clay will certainly be under intense scrutiny from the Packer faithful.

I hope Thompson moved up solely to fill a couple of those final holes rather than because he was in a panic after the 6-10 year. There was no doubt another OLB was needed; I guess the question is whether or not we could have picked up one with our original second-round pick.

Matthews does bring another element to the Packers. He was selected Co-Special Teams Player for three seasons in a row at USC, and that probably played into the decision as well.

And consider this one last factor, which I'll admit borders on conspiracy theory: Thompson may have wanted to trade away the third rounder the Packers received for Brett Favre.

Whatever.

Back to the filling holes argument, the Packers are only a year removed from a 13-3 season. In '08, Green Bay suffered injuries to Cullen Jenkins, Nick Barnett, Atari Bigby, Al Harris, and, of course, Justin Harrell. Assuming those players can come back to health, adding B.J. Raji and Matthews to the defense makes them look very formidable.

Matthews will most likely have a huge weight upon his shoulders in 2009. If he wins the outside linebacker spot opposite Aaron Kampman, there will be huge expectations.

An outside linebacker has incredible responsibility in the 3-4. He needs the power to combat defensive linemen and the speed to cover running backs in the secondary.

Now for the four-month wait to see if all this was worth it.

Aren Dow's Packer Draft Contest Picks

I know I can't win the contest. But I at least want to win bragging rights after these picks go two—for—two.

The first player selected by the Packers in the 2009 NFL draft will be: Michael Oher (OT), Mississippi.

Reasons and explanation: Way, way back on January 15th, I wrote this article about the Packers draft options, concluding that they will take B.J. Raji.

At the time, he was flying under the radar but I liked the big man. Now that he has gone mainstream (I sound like some bitter indie-rock band wannabe), I think he might be gone before number nine.

During that article, I only looked at defense and I've since changed my opinion. Green Bay needs tackles.

Badly.

Oher is a high-character guy, which is something Thompson (and I) definitely like. Tauscher could be gone, and Cliffy is old. Oher would be great here. Look at that picture; He is hungry for defensive lineman.

I could see Tyson Jackson here as well.

The second player selected by the Packers in the 2009 NFL draft will be: Alex Mack (C), California.

Reasons and explanation: I'm not going to lie. I don't watch much college football. I know the top 32 prospects because that is what ESPN tells me. I know a couple more defensive tackles and ends because Packers fans want those positions.

I know what you're thinking: this contest entry is the worst I've seen! Two offensive lineman with their first two picks?

Oh yeah, that's right. Mack and Oher are going to solidify this line for years to come.

Man, I wish I was the GM of the Packers...

Tie-breaker questions:

Will the Packers make a draft-day trade involving their first round pick? I really want to say yes, but history says NO

Will the Packers' third selection in the draft be an offensive player or a defensive player? DEFENSIVE

Will the Packers use any of their draft choices (day one or two) to take a punter? YES

There Is Nothing Like Going Out to The Ballgame

The smell of beer and hot dogs immediately hit me as I walked into Busch Stadium Tuesday night. Let me tell you, it is a wonderful smell.

There is something special about being at the ballpark. It is a great feeling, even therapeutic.

I didn't have the chance to go last year. It has been my first year I haven't been to a ballgame for as long as I can remember.

There is no experience like it. You are around other fans, really just complete strangers, but you are all chanting, cheering, and clapping for your favorite team. Whether it is the 80-year-old man, or the 8-year-old kid, we are all yelling for our team. You are part of a 35,000 person family.

I look forward to the beer vendor that walks the stairway, just so I can hear “Bud Light! Getcha Bud Light here!”

Even as a kid, I had some weird fascination with listening to the different vendors pitches. I love stepping on peanut shells, hearing the crunch underneath my feet.

Then you have the game itself. Even sitting at the top of the stadium gives an intimate feeling. Unlike on television, you can choose who to watch and get a different perspective of the game.

The game slows down. There are no camera cuts or highlights, just whatever you feel like focusing on.

Without the commentary of a broadcast boost, you begin to become less critical and more appreciative of the art of baseball. Without a direct shot of home plate for every pitch, nitpicking balls and strikes is less of an issue. The pureness of baseball seeps through at the stadium; even routine fly balls are majestic to watch.

At the stadium, you feel part of the team. The cheering you generate is just as important as the batter’s swing. Well, at least it feels that way. It feels as though you can somehow will your team to a victory.

The emotions of game become completely different as well. The highs are higher and the lows are lower. In Tuesday’s game, the temperature was around 55 degrees. With the Cardinals down 4-0 through the first four innings, it felt much colder.

Then, adrenaline suddenly rushes through your body as you see your team fight its way back into the game. You rise out of your seat to see if that pulled ball will stay fair, cheer and yell on a full count, and high-five friends and other fans as your team ties up the game.

The stadium feels a bit warmer.

And, if you are lucky, there will be two outs in the ninth with your team in the lead. With the entire stadium electric as the final out comes to the plate, nothing is better than having your closer shut down the opposition.

You can go home happy, and a little healthier from visiting the ballpark.

Now, I understand with the economy down means less cash in your pocket, so here are a few tips to save when seeing America’s pastime in the greatest baseball city.

Google KTRS 550 Cardinals tickets, and click the first link. The St. Louis radio station has a great program where you can purchase a pair of tickets for only $11. You do have to get there at nine in the morning, but it will be well worth it.

Bring in your own water and soda to the park. Just make sure it is in a clear plastic bottle. Trust me, when it gets into those late innings and you’re parched, shelling out $5.00 for a soda or $8 for a beer leaves a hole in your gut. Not to mention your wallet.

Take the Metro into the stadium. While I have not done this personally, I have had others assure me this is the only way to go. Parking is hard to come by under $10 around Busch Stadium, and can be another way to save a few bucks.

So do yourself a favor; take yourself out to the ballgame.

B/R Packers Draft Contest: Entries due by Friday, 12 Noon, EDT

If you are a Packers fan, you know Ted Thompson loves his drafts. We know he lives to trade down and amass a small army every year.

Now, we want you to get inside Thompson's head and figure out what is going on in there. Answer the questions below and you have a chance to win a Cheesehead and a B/R T-shirt!

Yeah, all you have to do is show why you should be on ESPN with your predicting skills, rather than Mel Kiper Jr., and you can walk away smug and garner some sweet prizes. There are only four days left, so make sure you get your entry in.

Your contest submission will be in the form of an article. Here are the guidelines:

Article to be between 200-400 words.

Title of the article should be:

{yourname}'s Packer Draft Contest Picks

For the body of the article, copy and paste the text below between the ####s. Then, answer the questions and give your reasons and rational.

##########################################

The first player selected by the Packers in the 2009 NFL draft will be:
Reasons and explanation:

The second player selected by the Packers in the 2009 NFL draft will be:
Reasons and explanation:

Tie-breaker questions:

Will the Packers make a draft-day trade involving their first round No. 9 pick? (answer "yes" or "no")

Will the Packers' third selection in the draft be an offensive player or a defensive player? (answer "offense" or "defense")

Will the Packers use any of their draft choices (day one or two) to take a punter? (answer "yes" or "no")

Additional comments or predictions:

#########################################

Contest Rules:

You must be a Green Bay Packer Community member to enter the contest.

B/R Packers community leaders can submit an entry but are not eligible for the prize.

Trades or changing draft positions will not affect your choices. You are predicting the first two players taken by the Packers, regardless of in what round or what selection number they end up being taken.

The four Green Bay Packer Community leaders will analyze the entries and select the winner. If there is no obvious winner or more than one winner, we will use the tie-breaking questions to help determine a single winner. If still undecided, then we will consider the explanations and additional comments given for your selections.

Decision of the judges is FINAL!

Limit of one entry per person.

Entries must be submitted by 12 p.m. EDT, Friday, April 24.

Bulls Suddenly Overcome Road Woes Against Boston

Despite the 118-115 loss the Chicago Bulls suffered against the Boston Celtics in Game Two, as a Bulls fan it has to feel good.

I felt, going into the series, that Chicago could hold their own at home. It would be their play on the road that would prove to provide too much of an obstacle for the young but talented team.

Now, they go back to Chicago knowing they can match the defending champion Celtics. They have the confidence of marching into Garden, and walking out with an even series. For a young team, that is critical.

What makes it even more special was that the Bulls were horrendous on the road this year, amassing a 13-28 record away from the United Center. To steal Game One from the Celtics was incredible. To take Boston to the final seconds a game later has to give the Bulls encouragement.

The encouragement of knowing they lost while getting destroyed 50-36 on the glass, that they are 1-1 in the series while John Salmons has shot a paltry 36 percent from the field, gives the feeling they can keep up without playing their best.

The Bulls certainly have the energy to keep it going. Joakim Noah has brought it this series, while mostly keeping his excitement under control when he has to. Noah and Thomas both have been ferocious while blocking shots, combining for 16 in the past two games.

Now they just have to guard Glen Davis.

Rose and Gordon have each taken over a game this series. After Rose ran into some early foul trouble, Gordon shouldered the burden. Not only did he provide scoring, but also showed leadership by calming down Noah after his technical foul.

As mentioned previously, Salmons has been less than spectacular. He provided a great complement to Gordon after the trade with the Kings. Teams no longer had to guard Gordon, but Salmons as well.

However, Salmons has struggled to find his touch this series. If he shoots near the 50 percent he did in March, it gives the Bulls another dimension in their scoring.

You have to believe it will come together when the Bulls come back to play at home. They were 28-13 at home for the season, 16-2 in their last 18 games.

There might even be a chance Chicago goes back to Boston with a 3-1 with their intensity and home domination. A far cry from what many Bulls fans had imagined.

Tony La Russa's Tinkering with the Cardinals' Lineup Provides Early Boost

Out of the 162 games last year, Tony La Russa trotted out 140 different lineups.

2009 has been no different.

With a four-man outfield, Troy Glaus injured, and Skip Schumaker making the switch to second, there would undoubtedly be changes to the order day-to-day.

Albert Pujols has been a lock at the No. 3 spot, but there has been a shuffle of players around him.

Colby Rasmus and Khalil Greene have alternated batting before Pujols so far this year. The two spot was the place Ryan Ludwick found his home and thrived last season.

So far this year, Rasmus has as well. He is 4-for-12 batting before Pujols and 0-for-6 batting elsewhere in the order. The spot hasn't benefited Greene as he is batting right around his average. Hopefully one of them can blossom the way Ludwick did last season and provide some offense in front of Pujols.

Perhaps that is La Russa's mindset, that either Greene or Rasmus will produce a better offense as a whole by moving Ludwick to the cleanup spot.

So far, this move has looked genius.

Ludwick is batting .461 behind Pujols, providing a much needed complement to "The Machine". There was much speculation about Ludwick matching last year’s numbers, but so far he has provided.

Ludwick really should be playing every day, as he is the most complete outfielder, not to mention the only right-handed one. His bat is more of a sure thing than Rick Ankiel's, and his glove is better than Chris Duncan's.

Ankiel has been the odd-man out around Pujols, and whether or not that is related, his bat is off to a slow start. He has more strikeouts (seven) than hits (five) so far. Maybe pitchers are figuring him out, or maybe it's the out of place beard Ankiel is sporting to why there has been a lack of production so far.

Conversely, Schumaker is locked in early this season, giving the Cards a solid leadoff man.

Well, at least when he does leadoff. The knock on Skip was that he couldn't effectively bat against left-handers, but he has been dominant hitting .400 so far.

Yadier Molina has floated around with Ankiel in he bottom of the order, and has struggled. Despite the early homer and triple, the Cardinal catcher with "deceptive speed" has hit into several double plays. Hopefully he can come around, but he should be hitting seventh or eighth.

After breaking down the numbers, I really wanted to be able to provide a solid, final lineup I was happy with. The problem in laying out a constant lineup is the four-man outfield. However, here are some constants I would like to see La Russa have.

1. Schumaker leading off. He is continuing last year's tear, and has proven to be a reliable leadoff man.

2. Pujols batting third. Duh.

3. Ludwick batting cleanup. I think he can really thrive here. It does break the R-L-R-L option the Cardinals have, but the offense has really worked out well this way.

4. Until Troy Glaus comes back, put Thurston, Barden, or Freese in the nine spot. Pitcher in the eighth.

5. Limit Greene in the two spot. Despite the one three-hit game, he kills the start of the order. I really like Rasmus here. When Rasmus doesn't play, I'd like to see how Duncan performs here, but he's not ideal either.

6. I agree with Ankiel being the bottom part of the lineup. He strikes out too much. You don't want that in front of Pujols. You want someone who can at least move the runner.

That being said, job well done for Tony La Russa so far. While the Cardinals rotation has stolen the show, the St. Louis offense has scored the sixth most runs in baseball. Hopefully he keeps on tinkering that lineup to perfection.

Kyle Lohse's Strong Start Is Encouraging

While the Cardinals offense burst for nine runs Tuesday night, perhaps the most satisfying part of St. Louis' 9-3 victory over the Pirates was Kyle Lohse's performance on the mound.

After Adam Wainwright struggled through five and a third the night before, Lohse crafted his way through seven innings, allowing two earned runs.

Lohse became the No. 1 starter by default last year when Wainwright and Chris Carpenter went down with injuries. He fulfilled the role with a 15-6 record and 3.78 ERA. Lohse's performances did seem to tail off at the end of the year, and many fans wondered if he could duplicate his career season.

On Tuesday, Lohse took a step in the right direction.

What stood out the most was that Lohse lasted through seven. After Lohse gave up a leadoff double in the seventh, Fox Sports cut to pitching coach Dave Duncan calling to the bullpen. Not only did Lohse end up working his way through the order, he did so on a couple of ground balls, getting a fielder's choice at third by Khalil Greene.

No reliever was needed until the eighth.

Anyone who followed the Cardinals last season knew the problems the rotation had, consistently failing to go deep enough into games. After Wainwright's performance barely lasted five, it was good to see Lohse step up and take some heat off the bullpen.

Dennys Reyes only threw 12 pitches, and Brad Thompson tossed a paltry seven to close the game. With Jason Motte's recent disaster, Tony La Russa needs to have his options of what reliever to use and when.

After a shaky first inning, Lohse calmed down and allowed only one hit over the next four. He had better command of his pitches than Wainwright did on Monday, and he was sharper for longer in the game.

Lohse threw 108 pitches, 70 of those strikes. He only allowed one walk.

In Spring Training, Lohse was up and down with a record of 3-2. To see him go an inning longer than any Spring Training start and give up only three runs is encouraging. For the Cardinals to have a chance at nabbing a playoff spot, it is imperative for Lohse to build upon last season.

While it is only Lohse's first start, it is great to see that he still has the touch. It should also be noted that it was the Pirates' offense he was facing.

His next start is on Apr. 12 against the Astros, which should be a tougher challenge.

Why The Jay Cutler Situation Sounds All Too Familiar

As I read the particulars of the Jay Cutler trade, the information and opinion sounded oddly familiar.

First round, third round draft picks, 8-8 team now turned into legitimate contender.

Come to think of it (apologies to senior writer Bob Warja for theft), the 2009 Bears look and sound a bit like the 2008 Minnesota Vikings.

When the Vikings landed Jaren Allen last season, there were four painful months of having to listen to Vikings fans worship their new hero, to read articles about how this changes things, how Allen now made them Superbowl favorites.

Now the Bears have their own prize in Cutler. They are excited and elated, and they should be. Cutler gives them a dimension they have rarely had over the years; a promising quarterback.

But it came at a price. The same price this year for Cutler, first and third round draft picks, that the Vikings parted with for Allen. Oh, and the Bears lost their 2010 first rounder as well.

No, Bears fans, it is not different. At least, not at first. Cutler still needs people to throw to, and I mean receivers. Greg Olsen and Matt Forte are talented, but cannot carry the team.

Besides converted kick returner Devin Hester, the Bears have at wide receiver:

Rashied Davis

Marty Booker

Earl Bennett

Brandon Lloyd

Yeah. It's not pretty. I'll be nice to Bear fans and not slaughter the notion that Bennett will now become a superstar because his Cutler is back.

You get a week of celebration, then back to the reality that Hester is only qualified to be a No. 2.

The Bears defense is getting older, and is not the dominant force it was in 2006. The past two seasons have not exactly been "Monsters of the Midway" worthy, ranking 28th and 21st in yards allowed per game.

There are still huge holes, much like the 2008 Vikings had. Fans tried to justify Bernard Berrian as a catalyst for their offense. As for their quarterback, well, we don't have to get into that mess.

Now, I'm not trying to say Cutler will not be an improvement, he will be. Cutler was better in every category than Orton was, but Cutler had better options in Denver.

There is no Brandon Marshall or Eddie Royal on the current Bears roster. Brandon Stokley would even find himself as a starter in Chicago.

One player does not make a team. The Vikings thought they had the missing piece to take them to the Super Bowl. Allen performed his duty, racking up three tackles, two sacks, and even forced a fumble in the Vikings only playoff match. Minnesota still lost by 12.

Unless the Bears find a wide receiver through free agency, there will be a waiting period before Cutler matches the numbers he had at Denver.

Cutler will be good, but he is not the immediate link to the Bears second Super Bowl. The Bears clearly have made their investment for the future, but that future is still a couple years away.

As the Vikings experienced in 2008, it takes a team to win in the playoffs.

Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers: Taking Bears-Packers to a Whole New Level

The Chicago Bears just traded for Jay Cutler. Packers fans, Bears fans. Do you understand what this means?

This is huge. This is beyond huge.

The best rivalry in professional football has a new chapter.

The Rodgers-Cutler chapter. The Cutler-Rodgers chapter.

Two of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL are now playing against each other. They will be forever compared to each other. Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler, whether they like it or not, will be forever compared to one another.

I cannot accurately describe how giddy I am.

Do you understand what this means?

Rodgers is 25. Cutler is 25. These two will be the face of their respective franchises for possibly the next 10 years. Maybe more, who knows.

They will be competing head to head in the great story of the Packers and Bears rivalry. Twice a year.

This has the potential to be the next Brady-Manning. Here's the thing, though. Colts and Patriots weren't a rivalry before those two. Cutler and Rodgers are now the centerpieces of a battle of 177 previous games. This has the chance to evolve into its own bar of which we measure quarterback rivalries.

Okay, you can probably tell I'm a tad excited. You may think that I may be stretching things a bit.

That's because you don't understand what this means.

Every time Brett Favre played the Bears, the broadcasting company felt obligated to show the lengthy list of starting Bears quarterbacks that had started during that same span.

No more. There are two equal quarterbacks now. Now, Bears and Packers fans get to adorn their quarterback and rip the opposing one to shreds. We get to analyze every part of the game for both and argue which statistics are more meaningful than others.

As a Packer fan, I'll tell you right now Cutler is overrated. I don't care he hasn't taken a snap with a C on his helmet. He is the product of a great offensive line and great wide receivers. Before Cutler went to the Bears, I thought he was one of the most promising young quarterbacks in the league.

Now I legitimately hate him. He sucks.

Look, I don't think you understand what this means.

The NFC North is a division waiting to burst. There is so much potential for teams to break out and do well. Now, the Cutler trade just furthers that notion.

This is a chance for this rivalry to go to the next level. For Rodgers to push Cutler, and Cutler to push Rodgers. For the teams to defend their quarterback and the fans to revel in cheering for their guy.

I know most Packer fans support Aaron Rodgers. I saw the ESPN poll where Rodgers received 8% of the national vote in "Who Will Be the Best Young Quarterback?"

Rodgers received more than 50% of Wisconsin's vote. But Cutler is good. It creates a competition, and maybe allows Packer fans move past Favre. Maybe.

I don't think you quite understand what this means.

But you will.

Come the opening Sunday Night game in 2009, when the Bears will take on the Packers, you will understand.

Evaluating the Green Bay Packers' 2006 Draft

Before the 2008 season, I wrote an article about the 2005 Draft. As I said in that article, I always find it ridiculous that fans and experts analyze drafts the day after.

After re-reading my article, three years may not be long enough.

Aaron Rodgers finally gave us a glimpse of what is to come. There were some spectacular moments for Rodgers, others fans would like to forget. Nick Collins exploded as well, reaching his first Pro Bowl.

The 2006 draft, I believe, is more clear cut.

Round One (Fifth overall): A.J. Hawk

Hawk has been good. Not great, not terrible, just average. For the fifth overall choice, though, more is expected.

It is a bit strange, as Hawk's numbers have regressed every year. Tackles, interceptions, passes deflected, forced fumbles, you name it, it seems to get worse. Granted, Hawk had more on his plate to worry about this past year due to Nick Barnett's injury, but the statistics are rather odd.

The sack total did rise from '07 to '08. But again, three sacks is nothing special.

He does have durability. Hawk hasn't missed a game since he was drafted. Whether or not he is playing well, at least you know he built. So well built he ruptures spleens (see Al Harris).

I took a peek at the rest of the top ten picks that year, which include Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Michael Huff, Donte Whitner, and Vernon Davis have all underachieved. By no means does it grant Hawk a reprieve, I just found it interesting.

The switch from a 4-3 to 3-4 will be an interesting experiment for Hawk. Hopefully it better suits him. But for now...

Grade: B-

Round Two (47th Overall): Daryn Colledge T/G

Colledge has become a starter for the team, with McCarthy projecting him to be the left guard. However, Tauscher's situation brings up the opportunity for Colledge to play right tackle.

Look, there aren't statistics for offense line. You can't really compare unless you study film. But I remember hearing the name Colledge during games, and when you are an offensive lineman, that is not a good thing.

The main problem seems to be that McCarthy doesn't know where to put him. He has started, he has potential. As a second rounder, you have to though.

Grade: B-

Round Two (52nd Overall): Greg Jennings WR

Probably the best pick Ted Thompson has made so far.

After trading Javon Walker, there wasn't exactly a clear cut No. 2 behind Driver. I remember being frustrated early on as Jennings would run the wrong routes. Then an injury. But his ability to be a deep threat was intriguing.

Now, I believe Jennings can make the Hall of Fame. I truly believe he can be one of the greatest Packers to ever play the game.

The man has speed, heart, and soul. Not to mention a pretty good head on his shoulders. Jennings can burn you deep, or find 20 yards after a quick slant route. He has the muscle and vertical to out-reach defenders, and the intensity to fire up the team.

He is selfless. I hear countless stories about his character. I don't remember hearing a peep about renegotiation after his 12 touchdown spectacle in '07.

I am not ashamed: I love Greg Jennings. I hope he is a Packer for life.

Oh yeah, some stats. Over three seasons he has 2844 yards, and 24 touchdowns, including last seasons 1292 yard and 9 TD's totals.

And this never gets old. He had 12 touchdowns on 53 receptions in '07. Nearly every four times he touched the ball, the Packers scored six.

Grade: No grade qualifies for how amazing Jennings is. I seriously wanted to do this preview just for the fact of reviewing Jennings. I guess we can move on now.

Round Three (67th Overall): Abdul Hodge LB

Didn't quite pan out. Hodge only played eight games for the Packers, and could never get beyond Hawk, Barnett, and Poppinga.

He currently is a backup on the Bengals

Grade: D

Round Three (75th Overall): Jason Spitz

Spitz has had a slightly better career than Colledge, but is moved around like his second-round counterpart. Spitz started last season filling in for Scott Wells at center, and had some issues fumbling the ball.

Spitz is currently the right guard, but will face some competition from backup Josh Sitton. Spitz should, however, retain his position.

Grade: B

Round Four (104th Overall): Cory Rodgers WR

Never really panned out as a WR or KR.

Grade: F

Round Four (115th Overall): Will Blackmon CB

Blackmon's career didn't exactly start out the greatest. He was Justin Harrell, but without as much hype.

I looked for Blackmon to really grab that nickel spot, but injuries kept him from developing. He is currently, in my mind, competing with Pat Lee for that fourth CB spot.

Blackmon has found his niche as a return man. Scoring two touchdowns off of punts last year, it looked like Blackmon finally started coming around. What I'm really thankful for, is that he stepped out so Charles Woodson wouldn't kill himself returning punts anymore.

Blackmon also shared kick-offs with Jordy Nelson, averaging a decent 21 yards a return.

Grade: B

Round Five (148th Overall): Ingle Martin QB

He had a funny name. Not much besides that

Grade: F

Round Five (165th Overall): Tony Moll T/G

Moll has seen some playing time, but has been a backup for most of his career. Tauscher possibly leaving can create a space for him, but he will battle Sitton and 6'7" Breno Giacomini. He has played all over the line, and the experience might give him the edge.

Grade: C+

Round Six (183rd Overall): Johnny Jolly DT

Jolly cracked a starting spot after Corey Williams was traded, and it coincided with a lack of stopping the run. He also ran into some legal problems before the season last year.

Jolly, if he can play, will be an important part for this team. If he does not start, he may be a backup for the NT or DE positions. For a sixth rounder, he's promising.

Grade: B

Round Six (185th Overall) Tyrone Culver S, Round 7 (253rd Overall) Dave Tollefson DE

Neither did much for the Packers, but Culver has lived long enough to provide depth for the Miami Dolphins.

Grades: F

Recap: The 2006 Draft was particularly impressive for Thomson. Six players are current or projected starters, one more is a backup. I doubt many teams can claim six starters from one draft alone.

Many are still just players and may never be superstars, but Jennings and Hawk have the chance. One more year, and Jennings will be. Changing schemes gives Hawk an opportunity.

This draft is one reason I trust Ted Thompson. There are starters found from the first to sixth rounds.

Let's hope he can do it again come this April.

Bulls-Pistons: Captain Kirk Leads Chicago Past Detroit

With rookie phenom Derrick Rose missing his first game of the year, Kirk Hinrich rose to the occasion.

Dropping 24 points and dishing out eight assists, Hinrich helped closed the gap between the eighth-place Bulls and the seventh-place Pistons to one game.

There were times I forgot Rose was out, as Hinrich continued to find teammates while hitting jumpers. Oh, and his defense was as effective as always, grabbing three steals.

Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah both continued their impressive years with double-doubles, again providing energy and enthusiasm for Chicago.

The announcers at TNT kept droning on about how Thomas should have 10 blocks a game. This was after the sequence where he blocked, saved, and moved the ball up to John Salmons for two.

I couldn't remember that Thomas had another block, and looking at the box score after the game, I was right. But for the last quarter I had to listen how Thomas didn't try hard enough to get 10.

From a fan's perspective, it would be incredible if Thomas was averaging five a game. Thomas has already come so far this season that I can get over that. Hell, he had five assists against the Pistons.

Five!

His shooting is getting better as well. After his steal late in the game, Thomas drove to the hoop connecting high off the backboard while driving the foul, another testament to his maturity.

I am continually impressed by Joakim Noah. There was one play late in the game where the Bulls recovered a defensive rebound up by double digits. Salmons had the ball and Noah noticeably told him to reset it back to Hinrich.

I thought trading for Salmons and Miller would be an excellent chance for the Bulls to really make a move in 2010. Rose would mature and they could have an impressive line-up.

However, this team has found a strategy that works. It has worked for five of the last six games.

It must be noted that three of those wins were at home, and struggles have continued on the road for the team.

The difference from the beginning of the season is without a doubt noticeable. If they continue their play, they could end up as the seventh. To me, it doesn't really matter whether the Bulls play the Cavaliers or the Celtics.

I am just glad to see this young team taste the playoffs again. They may go out the first round, but I think it is important to test them—especially Bulls franchise player Derrick Rose to see how he performs.

One last thought: Remember Ben Wallace at the line? Thomas, Miller, and Noah all made me smile when reaching the charity stripe, hitting 10-of-13.

Packers Offseason Update: Green Bay Handles Inside Jobs

There has been relatively little to mention as far as outside free agents are concerned, but recently there has been buzz within the organization.

Bench players Jarrett Bush and Mike Montgomery received new deals from the Packers earlier this month.

As far as I know, Montgomery wasn't receiving much interest. The resigning does provide some depth, but with the scheme change Montgomery does not really have a position.

At 275 pounds, both positions of OLB and DE are less than ideal. More likely to be suiting up on the defensive line, Montgomery will have to pack on a few pounds. Even so, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel says that, "listening to 3-4 coaches, lighter DE's usually line up away from the tight end."

I don't really see this working out that well because Montgomery doesn't fit into the scheme. Hopefully he can make an impression, because the Packers need all the help they can get on the line.

Conversely, RFA Jarrett Bush heard offers from several teams; most likely for his special teams play and not his uncanny ability to draw the yellow flag.

Let's just say there was a fairly strong outcry against the move, such as this Packers fan losing confidence in the organization.

While I have not exactly been a Jarrett Bush fan, I don't believe this was that bad a deal. Receiving penalties is often a product of discipline. Hopefully new special teams coach Shawn Slocum can provide some. Bush has raw talent, but he usually just overexerts it.

That being said, thank goodness they moved him to safety from cornerback.

While those players have new contracts, other players are not sastified with their's. Tramon Williams and Nick Collins have both expressed interest in receiving a few more dollars.

Not to worry, Williams is still showing up to off-season workouts. I can't really complain with how Williams is handling this. He's showing up and getting in shape. It is not as if he's holding out.

Williams deserves the money. Stepping in after Al Harris went down, Williams provided in a big way last season. He snatched five interceptions and made it feel as if the defensive backs hadn't missed a step.

What I think he should, and will get, is an incentive-laden contract much like Ryan Grant's. The problem they may run into with this is the lack of playing time Williams will get until Harris and Woodson hang up the cleats.

Bush's contract will most likely provide a point of reference to Williams' as well. For those wondering, Bush got a $4.5 million contract over three years. Again, I think Williams is worth it. Not only did he look impressive last season, showing up and continuing to work in the off-season has impressed me as well.

Nick Collins has a similar case. Rising out of relative obscurity as well, Collins broke out this year, making his first Pro Bowl.

Collins has been consistent. Since he was drafted in 2005, Collins has started all but three games. The second-round pick was knocked before 2008 as not being a playmaker, but last season has changed opinions.

Seven interceptions, and 72 tackles, surprised many Packer fans, including myself. Oh yeah, and he had three touchdowns last season, one less than the starting running back.

Collins has received a bit of flack, not showing up to off-season workouts. According to sources, his excuse is that he has a baby on the way. With the season he had, Collins deserves the short time off to be with his family.

Of course, once the baby is delivered, hopefully he will take the same path as Williams.

Either way, the Packers need Collins. Strong safety has contenders, but no one has stood head and shoulders above the rest. Atari Bigby and Aaron Rouse both have potential, but the spot is far from being solid.

The Packers are plenty under the cap. They can, and should, pay Collins.

Illini Draw Tough First-Round Matchup with Western Kentucky

Illinois has had their share of troubles this past week.

Losing senior point guard Chester Frazier to injury, then falling to Purdue in the Big Ten semifinals, and culminating with a five seed in the NCAA Tournament and a matchup against Western Kentucky.

The same Western Kentucky that pulled off a thrilling 5-12 upset over Drake last year, 101-99.

For Illini fans that know nothing about Western Kentucky except this fact, as I did, here is a short breakdown.

This WKU team is not the exact team as last year, as three starters left after last season. However, several current players still have tournament experience.

Junior A.J. Slaughter leads the Hilltoppers with 15.8 points per game, able to score inside and outside.

Senior Orlando Mendez-Valdez is a pure three-point shooter, jacking up 224 shots behind the arc and converting over 40 percent this season.

Hearing over and over from the committee they were evaluating the entire body of work, Western Kentucky had the out-of-conference schedule that put them ahead of the rest of the conference champions.

Scheduling four games against teams from the "Big Six" conferences, the Hilltoppers won half. One of those included a 68-54 victory against overall No. 1 seed Louisville, in a neutral-site game. They also bested Georgia and mid-major Southern Illinois.

Although those wins look awfully impressive, none were played on the road. When the Hilltoppers did venture into opposing arenas, they had a much tougher time. In fact, Western Kentucky had three games on the road where they lost by at least 28 points (Murray State, Mississippi State, and Florida State).

The Hilltoppers closed strong, winning the last seven games and the Sun Belt Championship.

On the other side, Illinois has struggled all year to shoot the ball consistently. Sophomore Demetri McCamey, the Illini's leading scorer, has three games this year without a field goal and senior Trent Meachem can be just as inconsistent.

Fortunately for the Illini, they have a huge size advantage over Western Kentucky. The 7'1" Mike Tisdale and the 6'9" Mike Davis should be able to control the inside, as WKU has only one player, 6'9" Jeremy Evans, that is taller than 6'5".

While Illinois has to work the inside, Western Kentucky has to score from beyond the arc. Illinois relied heavily on their defense this season, and with Frazier questionable for the game, WKU has to take advantage of this if they want to pull the upset.

Jeff Jordan, Frazier's replacement for the Big Ten tournament, has done as much as you could ask of a sophomore backup. He had six assists and only one turnover in the tournament, including promptly stealing the ball after the turnover.

If Jordan does start again, he needs to keep his nerves under control and turnovers limited.

Even with Jordan playing okay, he lacks intangibles that Frazier brought. With Frazier not handling the ball in the Big Ten tournament, the backcourt continued to take awful shots.

Davis needs to step up as he did in the Michigan game, and as an emotional player I believe Davis will come out firing.

The site benefits neither team as Portland is more than a short distance for both teams. Perhaps some Purdue fans will help support their fellow conference team, but that is probably just wishful thinking.

This game is the most popular 5-12 upset that I have seen. Without Frazier, it could very well happen. If Frazier is ready to play, I don't see the Hilltoppers standing a chance.

Putting Frazier on Mendez-Valdez would be great for the Illini. It would force Western Kentucky to find someone else to shoot from outside, or try to score down low against Tisdale and Davis.

Bruce Weber has coached this team to a place no one expected them to be this year. For Illini fans, hopefully he can keep the surprises coming.

Why I Want (and Have) to Believe In Albert Pujols

Walking into the Busch Stadium hours before the actual ballgame started, I ran into home run territory with my younger brother to witness greatness.

The year was 1998 and Mark McGwire was the show.

Crack after crack, baseballs soared into the air, falling into us: a sea of ecstatic fans. Thousands of fans congregated to see the spectacle, even at just batting practice.

Batting practice. Less people attended Montreal Expo games.

I was only 10 years old, but I knew this was something special. Something I could relate to future generations.

I would be witnessing history.

That all changed once the rumors of steroids flew around. Coupled with McGwire's denial to talk about the past, I can never look at Big Mac the same way.

I will still defend him to a point. McGwire could have still have accomplished what he did without PED's. His 49 homers as a rookie, which I believe was genuine, is a good place to start.

Mostly, my opinion of McGwire is much like the bronze statue of Mark originally intended to accompany the other Cardinal greats, buried in a dark place unwilling to dwell on it.

Then along comes Albert Pujols. Playing the same position and displaying similar power, it is hard to ignore the similarities between the two.

I need one difference to be real, however. I need El Hombre to be clean. Fans of a different generation may not feel the same way, but they may not have their first baseball hero fall from grace the way McGwire did.

McGwire was the reason I started to explore the history of baseball.

I wanted to see whose records he was shattering and found the early controversy of 61 for Maris. I found other Cardinal greats beyond McGwire to admire, from batting greats Rogers Hornsby and Stan Musial to legendary pitchers of Dizzy Dean and Bob Gibson.

There is one small problem with those players. I never have actually seen any of them play live.

There is just a special feeling witnessing your favorite players' and teams' achievements as they actually happen.

I have witnessed Pujols.

I have seen his incredible feats on the field and I want that to be real. I want the baseball I caught in batting practice to be something special. I need his guarantees that he is clean, to hold up.

As I read in another article here on Bleacher Report, the easiest way to get under a Cardinal fan's skin is to suggest the accomplishments of Pujols are unnatural.

For me, that statement rings absolutely true.

With all of the accomplishments of Pujols, it is hard to deny him entry into the Hall of Fame. Comparisons have been made to Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, and at his current pace, Pujols may end up as one of the greatest players of all time.

I am glad Pujols has spoken up about steroids. That he is addressing the subject without being directly under fire for taking PED's. When I saw the Sports Illustrated cover with Pujols telling me he won't let me down, it was exactly what I needed to hear.

So yes, Albert, I believe in you, because I want it so badly to be true.

Hats Off to the Milwaukee Brewers: Dollar Menu Coming to Miller Park

Don Walker of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported on Thursday that the Milwaukee Brewers are planning to install a dollar menu at Miller Park.

Obviously, this is just a public relations move to bring more people to the ballpark, but it sure feels good to see someone lowering their concession prices.

In an age in which fans nearly have to take out a second mortgage to cover the price of tickets, parking, and concessions, I applaud the Brewers organization for trying to help families. This is incredible news for parents that buy food at concessions for their kids.

The menu may include hot dogs, sodas (or since this is Wisconsin, pop), and popcorn. There is reportedly only one stand to serve the dollar products, and it will not be open for every game.

I do appreciate the thought the Brewers have. The lines will most likely be lengthy, but the wait will definitely be worth it.

While some may view concessions as an unnecessary purchase, I myself cannot go to the ballpark without at least having a hot dog. Now, I may even be able to buy two.

I remember the days when I was a kid and being able to bring refreshments into the park, and this was still in the early '90s. In the past 15 years, prices have skyrocketed to almost unbearable amounts.

This promotion may not last beyond the 2009 season, but I will sure enjoy it while it lasts.

Unfortunately, no word about dollar beers, yet.

Green Bay Packers' Defensive End Questions Must Be Answered

The Green Bay Packers' offseason has brought about much outcry from the fan community. It seems virtually every free agent will transform Green Bay into a Super Bowl contender, if only Ted Thompson will sign them.

Players, like DE Chris Canty, have already peaked interest from Ted Thompson. Canty eventually signed with his hometown New York over Green Bay, but it does provide some interesting tidbits.

No need to worry fans, Thompson is shopping around for defensive ends.

As well he should. The Packers seemed to forget the opposing team could carry the ball on the ground or tackle the quarterback. Green Bay ranked 25th last year in sacks.

Thompson doesn't seem to be the kind of person to make a move for the fun of it. He has made moves because he thinks it is in the best interest of the team.

Which brings us back to Canty. I think Thompson will get a defensive end through free agency just for the fact that he poked his head out of his shell. That interest is rare in free agency from Thompson, and it will lead to more inquiries.

I really believe Ryan Pickett can hold up in the NT spot. However, the DE situation is an entirely different story. Nearly every player slotted to fill one of the spots is a question mark, and Thompson could land a solid and secure part through free agency.

There has been much chatter about Igor Olshansky, the defensive end from San Diego that looks as fearsome as his name sounds. If the Packers landed Olshansky, it would provide a plug to a huge hole for the Packers. With his experience in the 3-4, he could be a vital part in the transition.

Although it isn't as glamorous as free agency, the Packers do have a few players of their own that could step up into the starting role of defensive end.

Cullen Jenkins seems to be the leading candidate for one of the two spots open. Jenkins played incredible last year, until the fourth week when came down with a season-ending injury.

Amassing two and a half sacks and forcing a fumble, Jenkins looked like the breakout player everyone thought he would be the year before.

At 6'2" and 305 pounds, Jenkins is a good size for a 3-4 DE. He played both tackle and end in the 4-3, and his knowledge of both positions should help smooth the transition into the new system.

Rehabbing his pectoral muscle is a slow process, but if Jenkins can completely recover it will bring a huge sigh of relief for the Packers.

Justin Harrell, on the other hand, is the epitome of frustration.

Since being drafted 16th overall in the 2006 draft, he has been injured often resulting in just 13 games played in the last two years.

It is difficult to assess whether Harrell can become a starter in the NFL, because he hasn't been on the field enough to show his potential.

Slightly bigger than Jenkins, his 6'4", 310 pound frame is still more suited more for defensive end than tackle. I can't imagine anyone advocating Harrell as a 3-4 DT with the injury record he has.

While Harrell is mostly known for the first-rounder that Ted "wasted," there is still time for him to turn his career around. If Harrell can manage to provide a solid 16-game season for the Packers—even as a backup—the help would be tremendous. He just needs to stay healthy.

The third man on the roster that could seal the end is Johnny Jolly. While he was a part of that atrocious run defense from last year, possibly moving to a 3-4 would help him. I do not think Jolly has the potential to become anything close to a nose tackle, but positioned at end is intriguing.

His 320 pound body certainly has the mass to take on a few lineman, but he isn't a playmaker. He does have a certain knack to knock a ball down, but he only has one sack in his entire career and zero forced fumbles.

Then we have the draft. The highest rated player that would fit the system would be LSU's Tyson Jackson. B.J. Raji is more of a NT; Orakpo, Brown ,and Maybin would fall into the same situation Aaron Kampman is now in.

Jackson would be somewhat of a reach and with the issue of OLB still looming, Thompson may draft a DE in later rounds of the draft.

The trenches of the NFL is where you can win or lose games. Finding the two starters and the depth to replace will be key to avoid the late game collapses witnessed in 2008.

It is by far the most important question the Packers must answer to have a successful 2009.

John Paxson Releases Newly Acquired Players

With the 116-99 defeat of the Denver Nuggets, Bulls GM John Paxson released a statement late Friday in regards to the Bulls' roster.

"We've decided that it is in the best interest of the organization that we keep our current active roster intact. The Bulls organization wish the best to our newly acquired players such as Miller, Salmons, and Thomas, but unfortunately your services are not needed at this time."

The decision was made in response to the under-manned Bulls defeating the third best team in the West. After trading fan favorite Andres Nocioni, Drew Gooden, Larry Hughes, and others before the trade deadline, seven remaining Bulls took the court and provided a win.

Lindsey Hunter would have made eight players for the Bulls, but Hunter was released as well from the squad. "We wish the best to Lindsey as well," said Paxson. "But we just feel we have the guys needed to go forward."

The Bulls, despite less players to give them a breather, outran the Nuggets and outscored Denver 22-4 on fast break points.

"Who's laughing now?" said Paxson. "There were a lot of fans that thought the players I drafted haven't lived up to potential. Guess what? The real problem was everyone else."

"It's fun," said Gordon. "I know I have the shot and sometimes it just takes awhile for me to find it. I know nobody is coming in for me, so I can continue to jack shots up without worry."

The Bulls also defeated the Bucks earlier in the week with nine players. Thabo Sefolosha was traded to the Thunder in between games.

With a current roster of seven players, the Bulls still may be looking to trim even more.

"Will we go to down to six? Whose knows, I wouldn't rule out the possibility," said Paxson. "First nine, then seventeen point margins of victory. It's hard to argue against those numbers."

"I knew I got the right players, but I wouldn't have thought of providing them without any rest."

The Bulls are now a half game out of the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.

Dallas Cowboys: I'm Glad I'm Not a Fan

As a Green Bay Packers fan, there are obvious rivalries. The Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings always leave a bad taste in my mouth, but there is another franchise I equally despise.

The Dallas Cowboys.

In the mid '90s, the Cowboys beat Green Bay at every turn. It is well known that Brett Favre never beat the Cowboys at Irvin. Three straight years, 1993 through 1995, the Cowboys outmatched the Packers in the playoffs.

The Cowboys claim to be "America's team" when we really know Green Bay holds that title. But I digress.

I have had no sympathy for the Cowboys and their fans.

Until now.

Jerry Jones is killing his team. He is squeezing every ounce of life out of the Cowboys and his coaching staff to give himself more power and control.

Now bear with me, because my nerdiness will now seep onto the page here.

Jerry Jones is Governor Tarkin. Yes, Governor Tarkin from Star Wars.

Jones is building his colossal $1.3 billion Texas Stadium, a stadium that he believes may be more important to his legacy than the three Super Bowls he won with the team. Jones believes that a giant hunk of steel and glass will be remembered more than winning the ultimate game.

It doesn't matter if Jones is right or not. As a Cowboys fan, that can't be what you want to hear.

The stadium will be the epicenter for sports for the next five years. Jones has college football games, the 2010 NBA All-Star game, the 2010 Cotton Bowl, Super Bowl XLV, and the 2014 Final Four lined up to play in the arena. That's just so far.

Jones is building his Death Star. The station that Jones believes will obliterate any other structure. It seems to be more important to Jones that the symbol of Dallas is the stadium rather than the Cowboys.

He is building this mammoth wonder and sacrificing the team that will actually play in it.

Now, in his latest command, Jones has ordered his employees to keep their mouths shut. Even head coach Wade Phillips.

Wade already has enough problems in the locker room, and with the Governor now ordering him to keep quiet to the media, this just lends itself to more problems.

Snatching what little power Wade had left, Jones is leaving Phillips helpless. If a player for the Cowboys has a problem, why would he even bother talking to Phillips. If he wants any support within the organization, he has to go through one person—Jones.

Jones is impossibly trying to keep a tight grip on his team, no matter how hard he tries. In the words of Princess Leia, "The more you tighten your grip Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."

There will be leaks. People will talk. Even Jerry Jones cannot make every decision run through him.

So while I feel no sympathy for Governor Jones, there is a twinge of sorrow within me for Cowboys fans. The Cowboys have the talent to win; they just need the discipline. Jones cannot be the one to provide that, however.

If I were a Cowboys fan, I would be furious. Jones is sacrificing the team for his own personal gain and power. Until he is gone, they will have a hard time overcoming that playoff hurdle.

Albert Pujols Is Now the Poster Boy for Baseball

With Alex Rodriguez admitting to steroid use, ESPN and the sports media were left looking for someone else to now bring them to the promised land.

In an interview Tuesday, the great Albert Pujols provided.

He didn't offer criticism like Jamie Moyer, or a new policy like David Ortiz. No, Albert Pujols delivered what people felt and wanted to hear.

Rodriguez's story is sad, but it is time to move on. Baseball needs to move on.

Pujols could have offered much more criticism, and he would have had a right to do so. Assuming Pujols hasn't touched PED's, he could had three more MVP's in his short career, as Rick Reilly outlines in his latest article.

But Pujols took the high road. Handling the interview superbly, he encouraged fans to judge Alex on the 2009 season and to see how Rodriguez performs after the admittance. Albert was focused on the future.

The future that now belongs to Pujols. There may not be a better man to take on the responsibility.

Pujols is a breath of fresh air. In an era where players like Mark Teixeira can bounce around four teams in 20 months, Pujols wants to stay with the Cardinals his entire career. As a Cardinal fan I like having that stability.

Baseball needs that stability.

I hear fans saying they just want to get back to the game, to watch baseball and not have to think about steroids. Pujols will not be able to cure the steroid epidemic, but he can be the beginning of the healing process.

Pujols has been as consistent on the field as well.

Never missing more than 20 games a season, Pujols has eight years of 30 HR, 100 RBI seasons. His batting average has only slipped under .327 once in his career, when he still hit .314 in his second year. His fielding isn't bad either, receiving a Gold Glove in 2006.

If that isn't enough, here is the clincher. While Rodriguez emblazoned tabloids with Madonna and supermodels, Pujols won the Roberto Clemente award last year. The Cardinal has a "good guy" image, a quality that will go a long way in taking on his new role.

It is that image that already has gained him credibility.

Did Pujols' interview sound familiar to you at all? Maybe it was the Cardinal fan in me, but when I heard Pujols emphasize the future, memories of Mark McGwire's congressional hearing came floating back.

Yes, their circumstances are different, but it will be interesting to see how players and fans respond to Pujols. Four years later, the same words from a different voice might finally be appropriate.

The recent news of Pujols wanting to play with St. Louis for his career came with one stipulation: the Cardinals have to win. Albert is known for his intensity and hard work. In his first several seasons, Pujols would even object to be given a day of rest.

There is no doubt Pujols will be put under intense scrutiny, most likely the same scrutiny A-Rod was under when his home runs were counted down to catching that cheater Barry Bonds. With the power Pujols possesses, he will now have to deal with similar expectations.

Pujols currently has 319 homers, and would need to play 11 more seasons at his current pace to reach 758, four short of Bonds. It is possible, as Pujols would be 39 at the time, just not probable.

No matter if he ends up reaching the milestone or not, Albert Pujols will be remembered as the bringer of a new dawn for baseball.

Assuming he is clean, that is.

Packers Drafting a First-Round Cornerback? I Don't Get It

Numerous mock drafts I have seen have the Packers picking Malcolm Jenkins at number nine.

Why, I ask?

Corner isn't even in the top three positions of what the Packers really need.

If you left the Pro Bowl off your Sunday schedule, you missed Al Harris, one of the Packers cornerbacks playing. The other one, Charles Woodson, was invited but declined.

So that is fairly good. Two Pro Bowl corners for a team isn't too shabby.

I'll admit though, both Harris and Woodson, 34 and 32, are getting up there in years. We do need depth, especially at a position such as cornerback.

But if you watched the Packers this year, you would know we have talent on the bench. After Al Harris suffered an injury that sidelined him for part of the season, a hero emerged.

Tramon Williams.

I really, really liked watching Tramon. I don't know what it is, but I like the guy. Maybe it was him stepping up and providing five interceptions for the Packers this season and not letting our defense fall completely into shambles.

Green Bay picked up Pat Lee in the second round last year, and he showed sparks of talent during the season. I would not put him in a starting line-up today, but with a year or two of improvement, he could be something special.

I don't think Will Blackmon will become become a starting cornerback. Hopefully he will prove me wrong, but he can be solid as the nickel back and punt return man.

Numerous blogs and Mel Kiper Jr have the Ohio State corner going to Green Bay, but I sure hope they are wrong.

At the number nine spot in the draft, you look for an impact player, someone who can immediately contribute. Malcolm Jenkins can be that contributor, but the Packers have more pressing needs.

Defensive end, outside linebacker, and offensive tackle should be the top three priorities. With the system change from 4-3 to 3-4, our linebackers need to be versatile enough to chase down receivers and power to the quarterback.

Our defensive line needs do the dirty work to take out the offensive line so the linebackers can close the gaps. They also have to stop the run, a concept they had a hard time grasping last year. Clifton and Tauscher aren't getting younger either, but unlike corner there isn't a obvious replacement for the tackles.

There are plenty of corners past round one. Let the number nine spot be used for a actual position of need.

There Is More To Ted Thompson's Drafts Than Justin Harrell

For some reason, some Packer fans think first round picks are sure things. That Ted Thompson should have no problem picking a Hall of Famer, or at the very least a Pro Bowler every time.

Some Packer fans think the only draft pick Ted Thompson ever picked is Justin Harrell.

Putting it nicely, these fans frustrate me.

We get it. Not many teams had Harrell that high on the draft board. He has accumulated stats in only 11 games since then due to injuries. There has been no production.

Sometimes picks fizzle out. But the key to success is consistently finding players to produce and being able to find unknown players that turn out to be difference makers. Ted Thompson has shown he can provide the insight to unearthing valuable players.

Believe it or not though, the Ted Thompson has actually drafted players besides Harrell. Here are some you might recognize:

Aaron Rodgers

Nick Collins

Brady Poppinga

Mike Montgomery

A.J. Hawk

Daryn Colledge

Greg Jennings

Jason Spitz

Will Blackmon

Tony Moll

Johnny Jolly

Aaron Rouse

Mason Crosby

Desmond Bishop

Korey Hall

All started for the Packers this past season. Collins made the Pro Bowl. Jennings was named an alternate. Crosby led the NFL in points in 2007. Blackmon has three punt returns for touchdowns in the past two years.

Besides the most recent class of Packers, Green Bay has added at least three starters from each class. Seven players from 2006 alone have started.

Ted Thompson cannot draft? Ridiculous.

In 2005, our receivers were Donald Driver, a disgruntled Javon Walker, and no one else worth mentioning.

Since then, he has compiled the arguably best one through five receiving team. In 2007, the media picked up on the Packers statistic of being ranked number one in yards after catch. This past year they fumbled only twice.

Another complaint from many fans is that Thompson has done nothing except trade down when valuable players are still on the board. However, the Packers have plucked several important parts to the team in later rounds. Montgomery, Jolly, Hall, Bishop, and Crosby were all sixth rounders.

Drafting down does have its merits. No player is a sure thing, and with the way the Packers have drafted, more picks are better.

Another gripe the Packer faithful have is Thompson's best player available strategy. With injuries to Harris, Barnett, Wells, Bigby, Jenkins, and more, it is impossible to draft according to need. In the game of tackle football, there is always a chance any position suddenly becomes a need.

Give Thompson his due. He has added quite a few pieces to make this young team something that will continue to develop and mature for the coming years.

Please do not pin an entire evaluation on just one player.

Pedro Gomez Pressures Feds to Release Bonds Evidence (Satire)

Much hoopla has surrounded the recent release of evidence in the case against Barry Bonds.

The recorded conversation between Greg Anderson and Bonds' former business partner Steve Hoskins and the failed 2003 drug test has resurfaced Bonds into the national spotlight once again.

It has also put the camera back on Pedro Gomez.

When the ESPN analyst came under question about perhaps playing a role in the case, Gomez broke down.

"Look, there's really been nothing for me to report since 2007," said Gomez. "I had to do something to get this story back in the headlines."

Gomez has been reportedly pressuring the prosecution to speed up the process, and for the judge to allow the previously withheld documents to be released.

Denying claims he hates Bonds, Gomez defended the left fielder.

"Hate Bonds? There isn't someone I like more. Yeah, I'll admit the reason I cover Bonds is because I lost a bet with Buster Olney, but I've come to love [Bonds].

"He's just misunderstood. I think if we can keep this case going for another seven to eight years, I can properly cover him and show the world the Bonds is not the guy everyone makes him out to be," said Gomez.

Bonds pleaded not guilty to charges Thursday about lying to a grand jury about use of steroids. More complications have arose on whether evidence will be deemed to have value to the case.

"Thank God. I mean, I just hope this can be properly settled. Things like this need time, and we should allow it to run its course," said Gomez.

The defense looks to exclude several of Bonds' blood and urine tests, starting March 2.

Chicago Bulls On An Impressive Run

Jerry Reinsdorf may have over-reacted a bit when calling this year's Bulls a "disaster." Sure, they haven't lived up to expectations these past two years, but there is hope.

Now only one game out of the eighth spot in the playoffs, a berth would seem to at least salvage this season.

Who knows if Reinsdorf's little outburst has fueled the Bulls, but either way, Chicago has won four of their last five.

Wait, who cares if they've beaten the Kings, Clippers, and the CP3-less Hornets? Those are teams they should be beating.

Why should we care? Because they are doing it on the road.

The same Bulls team that seemed to forget how to play outside of the United Center now has a chance to ride a wave of momentum returning to it. The same team that compiled an astounding 4-17 road record is now taking it to teams on their court.

In fact, the Bulls had won exactly one road game since November before they took down Clippers last Wednesday.

I feel like shouting, "Anything is possible!".

So, who has sparked this turnaround? Obvious answers point to Derrick Rose and his three 20-plus-point games. However, Rose's numbers have been right on par with the rest of his rookie season—nothing much has changed over the stretch.

It has been Tyrus Thomas that has elevated his game so much during this road stretch. Who better to feed off of Reinsdorf's comments than the emotional and electrifying Thomas?

Thomas has improved in nearly every facet of his game—most noticeably his rebounding. Averaging under six boards per game this season, Thomas has four games in the last five with at least 10 rebounds.

His point per game total has risen nearly five points as well, giving him four double-doubles on the current road trek. Thomas could have had a fifth if he snagged just one more rebound in Minnesota. His blocking 2.2 shots a game has been entertaining as well.

Joakim Noah has given Chicago a noticeable boost as well. Doubling his point total, Noah is shooting 67 percent over the last six games.

This inside presence is something the Bulls desperately needed with Drew Gooden out due to a groin injury. When Gooden missed nine games earlier this year, the Bulls struggled, going 2-9.

As the Bulls finish off the road trip in Dallas on Saturday, they have a chance to make up ground for the playoffs. They host Detroit and Miami at the United Center, then get the chance to take the current eighth-seeded Bucks in Milwaukee.

So, hold your tongue, Reinsdorf.

With two months left, there is still plenty of time to resurrect this "disaster" of a season.
