2009-10 Real Madrid Champions League Preview: Not A Dream But A Goal

<![endif]--> Arguably, this could be considered the most exciting season in Real Madrid’s recent decades. The comeback this summer of president Florentino Perez has brought some of the best players in the footballing world with him.

For the first time in the history of football, one team has been able to sign a group of world class players in one summer. Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká, Karim Benzema, and Xabi Alonso provide this team with weapons which have been badly missed in previous years.

Barcelona’s wonderful season has forced Madrid into this, and with this roster, expectations in Madrid are high, but exigency is even higher.

With no doubt, one of the main goals for Real Madrid this season is the UEFA Champions League, whose final, moreover, will be hosted at Santiago Bernabeu, Real’s stadium. In the past, the greatest European competition was the tournament where Madrid built a huge part of its legend.

This was where big nights happened, where "90 minutes in the Bernabeu were molto longo’’. There was a time in which the relationship between the Real Madrid and the competition was excellent. Unfortunately, this tradition has dramatically changed in the previous five years.

Seven years have passed since Real’s last European title and in the last five the team have not been able to reach the final eight in the competition.

There is not only one reason to explain these upsets; nevertheless, there are a set of remarkable weaknesses which can explain the reasons for Madrid's inability to claim Europe's greatest prize. The first one is the lack of special players; those players who can change the direction of a game in a moment.

In this type of competition you need these players. The second one is the depth of talent on their bench, which has been poor in recent years. Definitely, there were no outstanding talents coming off the bench, as well as a distinct lack of experience. Besides the likes of Raúl, Guti, Cannavaro, and Casillas, no one at Real Madrid was truly experienced in European competitions.

All these three former weaknesses are reasons to be cheerful coming into this season. Ronaldo, Kaká and even Alonso are special and experienced players; clutch guys. They have all won the competition in recent years and are able to step up in the defining moments.

Real’s starting lineup will unite seven former UEFA Champions League champions, as well as boasting money in the bank and also improving their bench. Even though the departures of Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben mean they are losing two quality players, the likes of Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Gonzalo Higuain, Fernando Gago, Esteban Granero and Christoph Metzelder give Manuel Pellegrini enough options.

These players'—formerly starters—new role in the team gives them depth and should be a factor if they are to be successful.

Being in a position of winning the Champions League is obligatory this year. There will be no excuse for underachievement. The first three teams in the path to the final will be AC Milan, Olympique de Marseille and Zurich FC.

Only the name and the jersey remain from arguably the greatest Milan side of recent years from the beginning of the decade. Time has run out for this team and this group of players.

They missed out on the UEFA Champions League last year and appear unlikely to win the competition this year. The Italians' hopes are dependent on Alexandre Pato, an ultra-talented though inexperienced player, who will not have enough on his own for them to be successful to succeed at the highest level.

They were embarrassed this weekend as they lost to arch-rivals Internazionale (0-4), in a game which showcased their decline; because of a roster of too old players and a bad transition from that team's glorious past to their current state. They could fight to compete, but pound by pound AC Milan are a couple of steps behind Real Madrid.

Olympique Marseille should be in the hunt for the second spot. They have solidified their position in the tournament over the last couple of years and this year, they represent perhaps the best team in French football.

Players such as Hatem Ben Arfa and Brandao provide the team with quality in the attacking quarter of the field. While Fernando Morientes and Gabriel Heinze will play against their former team.

Finally, FC Zurich will be the Cinderella in the group; a team which barely will be able to win a game.

This will be only the first stage. This group competition will set the team up for the real part of the tournament. Real’s challenge really begins in February.

Their hopes couldn’t be better; they have a great team capable of making it to the final, hosting it and lifting up the trophy in the Madrid night sky. It is a beautiful dream at this moment, but don’t get me wrong. It is more than a wonderful dream; it’s a goal.

Liverpool FC-Real Madrid Preview: The ''Beatles City'' Miracle

	mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";}

<![endif]-->

Real Madrid will try to avoid his fifth consecutive early UEFA Champions League elimination tomorrow, when they take on the Liverpool FC at Anfield Road. The Spanish Team has to overcome the 0-1 of the first leg.

Real comes off a home tie to the Atletico Madrid which ended its 10 games winning streak in La Liga.

Another tactical battle is expected for this game. Rafa Benitez and Juande Ramos, who combined for six European titles, will propose a slow and controlled matchup, with lot of midfield game and destructive football.

Arguably, Liverpool has advantage in this part of the field. Xavi Alonso, Javier Mascherano and Steven Gerrard, who missed the first leg, should be able to dominate the game, and dismantle Real’s offensive production.

I think that Real is going to have lot of troubles building the game again against this disciplined midfield.

The main aim for Real is scoring a single goal. In my opinion, the overtime is a good solution for them at this point. It is tough to surprise Benitez’s guys, and Real should have to make an early statement.

They have to build some momentum and get the crowd off the game. Real’s most dangerous offensive threat will be the captain, Raul. With Ruud Van Nistelrooy done for the year and Arjen Robben no at his peak, Madrid’s fans trust the eternal Raul for another magical night.

Liverpool’s defense looked impressive at Madrid, and Real will have to bring something new to the table in order to surprise them. It will be the perfect day for guys such as Gonzalo Higüain to step up.

Robben also has been a non-factor during the last month. Liverpool doubled-team he during the whole night at Madrid, as he wasn’t able to make plays. Real need all his weapons for tomorrow, and that includes the best version of Robben.

On the other hand, Fernando Torres is expected to play tomorrow. Containing him and Steven Gerrard will be the biggest challenge for Pepe and Real’s defense. We must not forget that Torres played severally limited in the first leg due to an ankle injury; however he was able to be a factor in the first half of the game. Tomorrow his speed is going to be a factor.

Absolutely.

Liverpool is going to search him and he is going to challenge his defenders. Torres is a big time scorer (He has always scored in UCL second leg games with Liverpool) and I think that he is going to be the man again.

In conclusion, I think that Real has its biggest challenge of the season tomorrow. They failed in the first leg and in my opinion they are going to struggle again at Anfield. Liverpool has deeper experience, is built to face this type of games and the environment will lead them to advance through the next round.

Benitez’s mind will be so much for Juande Ramos and the disciplined Liverpool will be so much for this hearted although overrated Real Madrid.

FC Barcelona-Real Madrid Preview: Anything Can Happen

	mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";}

<![endif]-->

The momentum, the firing of Bernd Schuster and the signing of Juande Ramos, where both teams came off, the injuries and all that has been said during the week.

None of this will matter tonight, when Leo Messi and FC Barcelona takes on Iker Casillas and Real Madrid. Above this, the battle will be a matchup between eleven players, wearing Real and Barcelona jerseys.

Anything can happen.

Arguably, the game should be an easy one for Barcelona. They have had easy "W" over tough teams such as Valencia and Sevilla, while Real have struggled in previous weeks.

Pep Guardiola’s team is the new version of "the greatest show on turf". A game based on excellence, with Xavi leading the midfield, Leo Messi getting the job done on the wing, and Samuel Eto’o hitting the goal in almost each shot.

The FC Barcelona is not only a high powered offense, but a reliable defense too. Ultimately, a well coached team, with all the players and the staff in the same page.

The best game played in the entire world of football.

On the other hand, Real Madrid is in chaos. The poor building of the team, with no wing players and without a reliable bench, and the injuries are killing the team. Real has problems building the game, because of the weakness of its midfield. Also, the defense is collapsing every day, and surprisingly, Iker Casillas is playing under his level.

As the tiny Real Union showed in the Spanish Cup, any team can damage them. The signing of Juande Ramos is expected to bring some tactical order and work ethic, but I have several doubts on the team’s talent and attitude.

There are many keys to analyze tonight’s game. In my opinion, for FC Barcelona the key will be allowing things to happen. I mean, they have to execute their game plan. Having the ball, and deliver it to the playmakers.

The most interesting and important matchup will take place on the right wing, where Sergio Ramos will try to hold off Leo Messi. If Ramos is able to win the battle, the victory for Real will be nearer.

Real also has to stop the rhythm of the game, pressuring Xavi, making his job harder. Defensively, and it’s not a secret, Real will have to take special care of Eto’o and hot Thierry Henry. The main factor for the Real Madrid will be hanging on to the game. Predictably, FC Barcelona is going to go for the game as a hurricane.

If Real is able to stop them during the first thirty minutes, the grind of the game will multiply Madrid’s chances.

Forget where both teams came off; forget Bernd Schuster's words; forget the injuries; forget almost everything, and get out of your mind an easy victory for FC Barcelona.

The greatest rivalry game in the world has to write his own history, and this history will take place tonight at Camp Nou at 10 p.m. local time.

Anything can happen.

Jose Mourinho, Frank Rijkaard: Is Coaching Experience Overrated in Football?

We have heard thousands of times about experience in football. There are always questions marks coming into the season when a young and inexperienced coach takes control of a big club.

All the analysts speak about the lack of experience, and suggest that it could be the first problem for him and for the team. The most recent example of this is Pep Guardiola, new head coach of Barcelona.

It is his first job, and there were doubts about how was he going to manage the team, and how he was going to make them a winning team. The grind of the season, and the way they are currently playing the game is answering the questions.

His early success and some other examples of inexperienced although successful coaches have brought to my mind a new question:

Is coaching experience something overrated in football?

In the past, I’m sure that I would have answered this question with an "absolutely not. An experienced coach is the main key for a winning team."

Right now, my opinion is different; and yes, believe or not, coaching experience is something overrated in football. It’s not as important as motivation, preparation and finding the correct pieces and way of playing.

I think that these are real factors, the other one is a media issue. Let’s take a look to a bunch of examples:

Vicente del Bosque

Current head coach of the Spanish national team, Del Bosque had the best times in his first four seasons as Real Madrid coach.

He won two Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles, the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup, and the Toyota Cup. Above this, he was able to keep joined a bunch of stars, making them play as a team. Because of his character, Del Bosque didn’t have the credit he deserved.

Later in his career, he struggled as Besiktas head coach. He had no coaching experience; yet he was able to lead Real to the top.

Jose Mourinho/ Avram Grant

It took him a couple of seasons to build his legacy. Mourinho led an underdog such as FC Porto to back-to-back European titles. The UEFA Cup and the Champions League trophies made him the most highly rated coach in football.

His way of preparing the team, and the effective game Porto practised during his era opened the future for Mou, as Roman Abramovich made him the best paid coach of the world when he was brought to Chelsea.

While he won back-to-back Premier League trophies, he wasn’t able to take the team to the Champions League final. He had billions to spend; nevertheless, he didn’t match the success he had with Porto.

He left the club in September of 2007. Avram Grant replaced him as an interim coach, and he, without any experience, finally took Chelsea to the Champions League final. Jose Who?

Frank Rijkaard

In 2003, after being selected FC Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta named Frank Rijkaard as his head coach. Barcelona was a calamitous club at that point, and a tough place to work.

Despite having a slow start, Rijkaard was able to build the best team of the millennium. No team matches the game that Barcelona played in first three seasons under Frank Rijkaard. The quickness, and the happy way of playing made them "the greatest show on the pitch." He won back-to-back La Liga titles and the first Champions League title in 14 years later.

The next two years, the team killed itself. The egos and the lack of aggression and hunger destroyed them, and destroyed Rijkaard too. However, the game they showed and the way they got the job done must be remembered.

As we can see, coaching experience is something overrated in football. Absolutely it’s important, but not as much as many people think. These three head coaches showed that it’s possible to be successful early in a coaching career.

Definitely there are things, such as preparation or motivation, that are more important than experience.

Top Three Hottest NBA Teams coming into the season

This article is also posted at hoops4life.com, an NBA fan site.

The NBA slogan is "Where…happens." "Where impossible happens." "Where comebacks happen." "Where excellence happens." These words express perfectly what a NBA season represents, and especially if we are talking about the 2007-2008 season which was one of the greatest ever.

As said, these words are used during the season, but there is another one which defines what the off-season is. For many teams, the off-season is "Where illusion happens."

Despite of many different factors, each year a group of teams are able to build some momentum during the summer. A good ending of the previous season, a huge move, or something like this let us to point a bunch of teams before the season opener.

Many times, the grind of the season knocks down the expectations, nevertheless, other few times, the team achieve his goal. In this article, you will find which teams are coming of the edge in ’08-‘09 and why.

1. Portland Trail Blazers (Last season record: 41-41; West 10th)

I have followed the NBA since I was about 10-years-old, and I have never seen all this expectation around a non-Playoff team. The expectations are high, but the youth and the talent of this team match them.

Greg Oden, former first overall pick of 2007 NBA Draft joins Lamarcus Aldridge and all star Brandon Roy. These players are called to form one of the best "big threes" of the upcoming seasons.

Aldridge and Roy had a breakout season in their second year in the League, as they combined for about 37 ppg, 12 rpg and 7 apg. Above the stats, they were an outstanding dynamic duo. Both are raising players, and they have too much space until reaching to their peak.

Oden’s presence will help the team defensively. The former Buckeye is a tremendous power at the low post. Aldridge took a step forward last year, but he can’t mach Oden’s intimidating abilities. He will be a force grabbing rebounds and blocking. I don’t expect big scoring numbers for him this year, but his contribution to the collective defense of the team will lead the Blazers to the post-season.

Oden will not be the unique new face at Oregon, while Spanish star Rudy Fernandez joins the team too. Fernandez was the Olympic sensation, and his dunk over Dwight Howard was the play of the tournament. He will have an important impact in his rookie season and he will help from the perimeter.

Fernandez will not have as much touches as in Spain, but he is a great player and he will capitalize his opportunities.

The Blazers have much to prove this season and show the entire League that theirs future is right now. I expect them to make the Playoffs and upset someone.

2. Houston Rockets (Last season record: 55-25; West 5th)

Perhaps, a first round elimination was a disgusting ending for this team. Perhaps T-Mac can’t go into the second round of the NBA Playoffs. Perhaps, Yao Ming would not be the same he used to be before his devastating knee injury. And perhaps, they were the worst team in NBA history to have 22 victories in a row.

Yes, all of this topics can be for real, but it is off-season time, and the Rockets are not the place for pessimistic at this point. They were a tremendous team last year, although they missed all-pro center Yao Ming for the second part of the season.

All the players stepped forward, and raised their level. In my opinion, during the second part of the season, and during their short trip to the Playoffs they built a chemistry of a championship team.

They know right now that the can face anyone, and they also know that there are so many problems you have to overcome during the season for be succeeded.

Coming into this year, they have this background, they are a settled team and the newcomer, Ron Artest, will help them to advance to the next level. I expect them to battle for a spot in the Western Conference Finals.

Perhaps, this is their season.

3. Philadelphia 76ers (Last season record: 40-42; East 7th)

The Sixers are the most intriguing team out of these three. They had a loosing record last year; nevertheless, they forced the Pistons to play six games to knocking down them. They were able to clinch a game at the Palace, and they nearly went for a 1-3.

In this case, this bright final, and the acquisition of all-pro Elton Brand gives the team a huge momentum coming into the season. Andre Miller and Andre Iguodala are an underrated although talented duo of perimeter players. They carry the scoring weight of the team, combining for 36 ppg. Louis Williams is a reliable option coming of the bench as he puts over 10 ppg.

At the low post, Brand joins Samuel Dalembert, and I’m sure that they are going to be a dominating couple. Dalembert is a defensive-minded player; a rebounding machine and an intimidator. Brand will complement him with his offensive talent and skill as he will also improve the overall level of the team.

In my opinion, this team will break out this year, making the postseason again and becoming a huge contender through the NBA Playoffs.

Was the Denver Broncos' Early-Season Performance a Fluke?

After a disgusting 7-9 season, and an offseason pointed by franchise quarterback Jay Cutler’s health issues, the Denver Broncos were facing an intriguing situtation a month back. The team looked absolutely lifeless last season, and Cutler’s situation was a question mark coming into the season.

Going through the third week, those question marks looked to have disappeared. The team was 3-0, and Jay Cutler's impressive start put him as the best quarterback in the NFL. They started the season with an easy and solid victory over the Oakland Raiders, and they continued their march with dramatic victories over the San Diego Chargers and the New Orleans Saints.

The record shows that yes, they won these two good football teams—but there is a fact that the record doesn't reveal.

The Broncos won the game to the Chargers after a bad call, which allowed them to overcome the game in the final second. The NFL admitted the mistake, and referee Ed Hochuli was downgraded after the poor call. One week later, Saints kicker Martin Gramatica missed a potential go-ahead field goal from 43 yards with 1:55 left in the game.

Absolutely, Cutler is recovered, and there are no doubts about him. However, questions remain on the defensive side of the football.

This week, they finally struggled—against a winless team. The Kansas City Chiefs destroyed them on the ground. Larry Johnson had a season high with 198 yards and two scores.

They main problem in the Mile High City is that although they have a high powered offense, their defense is calamitous, and unable to stop anybody.

The New Orleans Saints had 502 total yards, while the San Diego Chargers compiled 456 yards of total offense. The Broncos are ranked 30th in total defense, ahead of only two winless teams—the Rams and Lions. You can’t win many football games without making plays on the defensive side of the ball.

Many analysts and fans overrated them after three weeks, but the reality is that this team is not poised to make a statement or the playoffs this year. They are facing solid teams next four weeks, starting with two home games to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Then, they will go on the road to face the New England Patriots, and finish the term against the rising Miami Dolphins.

They also have tough road games with the Carolina Panthers and San Diego Chargers befrore the end of the season.

In my opinion, this team is a very enjoyable team to watch, but I think that they are not going to translate their game into victories further this season. It’s too easy to score and move the chains against this team. This, and the grind of the season will put them where they expected to be before the start of the year.

Darren McFadden, Felix Jones and More: Greatest Running Back Class Ever?

After three weeks of NFL football, I have many questions about this running back class.

Is it just easier today to be an impact player from the first day, or are we facing one of the best running back classes ever?

In the first week, Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte carried the major load of his team’s ground attack, smashing the Indianapolis Colts defense and becoming the first Bear rookie to gain more that one hundred rushing yards in his NFL debut.

Meanwhile, backup tailback Felix Jones got it into the house in his very first offensive touch with the Dallas Cowboys.

With only one game, we could think that it was a fluke, or rookie luck. Two weeks later, we must erase this from our minds. Forte has compiled more than three hundred yards on the ground, and ranked fourth in the entire League.

Meanwhile, Jones has had back-to-back prime time highlighted performances, scoring a touchdown in both MNF and SNF. By now, he has showed that he is a consistent big-play threat, returning a kickoff for touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles and putting up a sixty-yard rushing score against the Green Bay Packers.

Absolutely, this class has talent—not only talent, but depth too.

After Forte and Jones, there are a bunch of talented players dominating the game from his debut. Darren McFadden ranks third among the rookies. Former teammate of Felix Jones at Arkansas, McFadden is already the go-to guy in Oakland. He was limited during the third week because of an injury, but he showed in Week Two what he can do in this league, as he ran for 164 yards in the unique victory of the Raiders.

Chris Johnson and Steve Slaton are also putting big numbers for the Titans and the Texans, respectively, as they have become the main running backs there. Both have already had hundred-yard rushing games, and their potential is tremendous.

Jonathan Stewart has been a huge part of the Carolina Panthers' success. He is sharing the backfield with DeAngelo Williams. While he is not having as many carries as his class-mates, however he is a huge finisher—and he leads all rookies with three rushing touchdowns.

For these guys, future is now—and they are a factor for their teams immediately.

They are a group of rookie running backs with the talent to step up and join the NFL's elite. With Forte, Jones, McFadden, Johnson, Stewart and Slaton under the lights, and with other guys such as Rashard Mendenhall, Mike Hart, Ray Rice, and Michael Bush waiting for their opportunity, are we facing the best running back class ever?

Not Cristiano Ronaldo Or Lio Messi: Kun Agüero Is the Best Player in the World

<![endif]-->

It’s really hard to point who is the best player in the world. There is not a universal way of measuring it and analysts never match their opinions.

During the previous seasons, players such as Kaka, Lionel Messi, or Cristiano Ronaldo have shared the "title" of being unanimously considered the top player in the entire world. All these guys were, and still are key players for their team’s success, as they have led them to the UEFA Champions League trophy last three seasons.

Absolutely they are difference makers; however, their throne is threatened right now, because there is a new Sheriff in the town. At this moment and after a month of competition the Argentinean Kun Agüero, with only 20-years old, is the best player in the world. I really suspect it before the start, and the grind of the season is confirming it.

With no doubt.

Agüero is the real deal; the full package. Everything goes around him at Atletico Madrid. Since his arrival, and after struggling a little bit through his first season, he has been the leader of this team. Agüero is a lifetime player. He has outstanding skills. He dazzles with the ball, and his dribbling abilities are tremendous.

Nevertheless, this is not his best weapon. This is not what makes him different; special. What makes him special, and great, is his ability of being unique in the final metres. Agüero makes his money and his team’s money in the penalty area. He is a finisher, a guy who knows in each moment what he has to do.

Moreover, Agüero makes his teammates looking better. His outstanding football IQ allows him to assist as the best one, and take the best of the players surrounding him. His intelligence also lets him to be is the best position in each play. If there is a gap between the defenders, Agüero is there to make money. If the goalkeeper doesn’t keep the ball, Agüero is there to make money.

He kills you.

I’m definitely an Agüero-believer. Atletico Madrid did a statement in their first Champions League appearance after 12 years, and he was the leader, the soul of this team. He has not peaked yet, and he is determined to build his legacy from this season, succeeding in the UCL upsetting someone and advancing through the tournament. His bunch of great performances began at Beijing, where he led Argentina to clinch the gold medal.

Now, it’s time he to dominate the country and the continent. Next victim: Liverpool.

Are the Utah Jazz Finally Ready to Take the Final Step?

This article is also posted at hoops4life.com, an NBA fan site.

Back in the '90s, the Utah Jazz were perennial contenders. Future Hall of Famers such as John Stockton and Karl Malone led them to back-to-back NBA Finals. Only Michael Jordan and his Bulls separated them from the title.

After Stockton’s and Malone’s retirement, the Jazz faced a forced rebuilding—a hard and long process. Teams have to take good draft decisions, make good moves, and be patient. They also have to be lucky.

The Jazz have done an unusually good job of rebuilding. Since their dynamic duo left, they have only had one losing season, and they have only missed the playoffs three times. In their two winning non-playoff seasons they were short by one and three games, respectively, of making the postseason.

During this span, they drafted Andrei Kirilenko and Deron Williams, they signed free agent Carlos Boozer and traded Carlos Arroyo for Mehmet Okur. All four are starters and key players right now.

The past two seasons, the Jazz have been over the fifty-win, mark reaching the Western Conference Finals in ‘07 and the Conference Semifinals in ‘08. They are a settled team and one of the main contenders for the upcoming season, but are they ready to take the final step?

Do not doubt it.

First of all, Jerry Sloan is one of the most intelligent guys in the business. He knows how to manage winning teams, and he knows that he has maybe the most talented crew of players of his career.

Moreover, most of the players are in their best moments. No one has peaked yet, and everyone has improvement margin. They have a deep roster, full of great players.

D-Will needs no presentation. He is the emotional leader of this team. He had a breakout season in '06-07, and since then, everything has been rolling in Salt Lake City. He can assist, he can score, and he has the physical condition to play smart D. He makes his teammates look better. Everybody benefits from Williams at the point guard.

Kirilenko and Okur are pretty versatile guys. The Russian is an all-around player, able to score from the perimeter and defend opposing stars. Okur is also a versatile guy. In my opinion, he has been the primary beneficiary of Williams’ presence.

Boozer is one of the top power forwards in the NBA. He is a tough guy, not only a scorer. He is able to battle in the low post and grab a bunch of rebounds. He is an intimidator.

Ronnie Brewer is "the other" starter. Do not underrate him. Brewer will be a full time starter in the coming season, and will have a breakout season in '08-09. Opposing defenses will not pay much attention to him. He will have to capitalize on that, and become another threat for the Jazz offense.

They also have good players coming off the bench, such as Matt Harpring and Kyle Korver.

So, they have the talent—but talent is not enough.

A winning team always needs something more. A winning team needs poise, attitude, and experience.

I think that they have all three.

They have playoff experience and hugely positive attitude, especially when they play at home. The Energy Solutions Arena is a tough place for out-of-towners to play. Their 37-4 record at home last season proved it all.

Their time is right now. They have to step forward, do their best during the regular season, clinch home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, and complete the assault to the NBA Finals.

They are a settled team, perfectly prepared to face the challenge at the upcoming season.

Ron Artest and James Posey the Final Pieces for Rockets and Hornets

<![endif]-->

One year ago, Danny Ainge shocked the entire NBA, getting Kevin Garnett via trade and Ray Allen via free agency, joining all-pro Paul Pierce. Suddenly, the Boston Celtics became the top favourites.

Nine months later, the Celtics confirmed the expectations, lifting the NBA Championship trophy. These offseason moves changed the face of the team, and are considered some of the best moves in NBA History.

This year there have been many interesting moves around the NBA. Some of the league’s elite players will play for a different team this upcoming season.

Baron Davis left the Golden State Warriors, signing with the Los Angeles Clippers. It was a good move during a short while, but many days after reaching to L.A. franchise player Elton Brand moved to Philadelphia. Baron Davis is a great player, but without Brand, he won’t be a difference maker.

On the other hand, Brand reaches to a young and talented team. At Philly, he will join Andre Miller and rising stars such as Samuel Dalembert and Andre Iguodala. The Sixers gave fight to the Pistons in last season's playoffs. Nevertheless, they may need something more than Brand to make a real statement this year.

Another good move involved the Indiana Pacers and the Toronto Raptors. The Canadian team made a risky move, bringing Jermaine O’Neal from Indy in return for T.J. Ford and Rasho Nesterovic. If O’Neal stays healthy, he will absolutely be a difference maker. The Raptors are a settled team, and this could be the final piece for them.

Well, there is no doubt that all of these are good moves, but in my opinion, they won’t have the most impact of all of this offseason's moves. I think that all of them are good additions, but their new teams have many weaknesses, and they can’t overcome this by themselves.

For me, there have been two moves that could really set the difference this year. Ron Artest and James Posey are the best acquisitions for the Rockets and the Hornets. Both reach to settled teams. Both teams made the playoffs last year, and these two players will lead them to the next level.

Artest will provide the Rockets his great aggressiveness and his underrated offensive skills. He will be a reliable third offensive option, and he will put scoring pressure off McGrady’s shoulders. Artest is not a League star like Baron Davis, Elton Brand, or Jermaine O’Neal, but he may be the perfect piece for this Houston Rockets.

We shouldn’t forget that the Rockets were able to make the playoffs without Yao Ming. They also made history, after winning 22 games in a row.

Ming showed during the Olympics that his knee is healthy as he dominated the tournament. T-Mac is an indispensable, and Shane Battier is a great team player.

With Artest with no off-court problems and focused on the game, he will be a changing player for this team, and he will help them to finally take a step forward in the upcoming season.

James Posey will also help his new team to advance through the NBA playoffs. The Hornets are one of the best teams in the League. They were the surprise team of the last season.

Chris Paul had a breakout year, and he made his teammates look better. David West showed a new level, and he was quite a special player. Tyson Chandler and Peja Stojakovic also had solid seasons.

Nevertheless, they paid their lack of playoffs experience, and they lost to the Spurs in seven games. In my opinion, Posey will show the way for this group of players.

Posey holds two championship rings and he knows how to get the job done. Above all this, he will provide aggressiveness and an outstanding defense. He is able to spread his attitude and he is an indispensable in winning teams.

As said, for me, these two players are the best acquisitions of this offseason. Maybe they are not League stars, but they are the pieces that their new teams needed to do something special this year.

Deron Williams, Al Jefferson, Jose Calderon Could Become All-Stars This Season

This article is also posted at hoops4life.com, an NBA fan site.

The NBA All-Star Weekend is one of the largest global events of the League. The All-Star game is broadcasted all over the world. For a player, making the All-Star team is a curriculum issue.

When a player retires, everyone will mention his All-Star appearances. Of course it is not as important as advancing to the postseason and making the Finals, but making the All-Stars is a good statistic by which to measure a player’s career.

Some players are perennial All Stars. Guys such as Jason Kidd, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, and Dirk Nowitzki have been at the game for at least seven times each one. In last year's All-Star Game, which took place at New Orleans, the average All-Star appearances was close to five.

Only Chris Paul, Brandon Roy, and David West made their All-Star debut, and none were selected by the fans. Well, at this point, it’s clear that it's hard to be a newcomer at the All-Stars, but there are many players who will have a shot to break into the 2009 team.

Deron Williams

A safe pick here.

Yes, D-Will has not made the All-Stars yet. Over the last couple of seasons he has contributed outstanding numbers, and he has led his team through the NBA Playoffs. Last year, for example he had 18.8 ppg and 10.5 apg.

The main factor of his All-Star absence is that his position is very mediated at the West. In 2008, Iverson was the starting point guard, with Chris Paul and Steve Nash backing him up. Iverson is an unbelievable player but being an African-American icon and an all around the world youth icon helps him in the balloting.

This year, he will make the All-Star again; CP3 too, but I think that Nash should be relegated. I’m not sure if the Suns are going to make a good season, but I’m sure that Nash won’t. A new era has begun at Phoenix, and without D’Antoni’s system Nash won’t put previous seasons’ numbers on the board and his game will also be less spectacular.

Al Jefferson

This guy was the gem that the Boston Celtics sent to Minnesota in Kevin Garnett’s trade.

Jefferson, who is entering his fifth NBA season, is one of the best power forwards in the league. Last year he scored 21ppg and grabbed over 11rpg. He is the go-to-guy at Minnesota and he has not reached his peak yet.

His skills and his numbers are awesome, but he has a huge problem. He has always played for losing teams. In his breakout season at Boston, they won less than 20 games, and last year he didn’t improve the team's overall wins but trailed the previous season's total wins by 10 games. For this reason, he hasn’t got the credit he deserves.

On the flip side, his talent and his athletic abilities will send him directly to the All-Star game. Nowitzki and Duncan will make it for sure, but Jefferson should be with David West and Carlos Boozer battling for the other two spots.

Jose Calderon

Before calling this a homer, let’s take a look at the Eastern Conference environment.

Last year Jason Kidd and Chauncey Billups were the team’s point guards. With Kidd at Dallas, and with Billups getting older, I think that there is clearly an empty space at the PG position. It’s a fact that Arenas will be back at the All-Star game, but there are still places to fill.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Calderon fills this space. He is going to be a full-time starter, and he has plenty of talent around him. Moreover, the Raptors should win a bunch of games this year.

For all these reasons, I think that the Spaniard has a chance to make the All-Star game if he performs as expected.

Honorable Mentions

Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers) and Andris Biedrins (Golden State Warriors)

Is the NFC Going to Be Tougher Than Expected?

It has only been a Sunday, but it hasn’t been any given one.

The entire NFL is shocked after the Tom Brady’s season-ending injury. The biggest contender coming into the season is now full of doubts and concerns. Without Brady, their Super Bowl chances are dramatically drowned. Matt Cassell, who has been backing up ‘’the Golden Boy’’ for three years will have the starting job, while the Patriots are considering to sign a proved veteran.

It is the biggest story of the week, and maybe of the season. Nevertheless, another unexpected thing happened this Sunday in the NFL: Two average NFC teams went on the road to beat two AFC powerhouses. The Carolina Panthers upset the AFC Championship finalist San Diego Chargers, while the Chicago Bears held off the Indianapolis Colts in the first regular season game hosted at the Lucas Oil Stadium.

In a revival of Super Bowl XLI, the Chicago Bears played as they used to. Their offense did not commit mistakes, and the defense dominated the game and was able to put nine points on the board. The running game looked pretty good. Rookie Matt Forte had a dreamed debut in the NFL. The running back out of Tulane had 123 and one touchdown on the ground, and quarterback Kyle Orton had a solid day free of turnovers.

It’s their recipe to success. If they are able establish the running game, taking the pressure off Orton’s shoulders, they will be succeeded. It will also keep the defense fresh, and the unit will be able to dominate again. Playing like yesterday, they are a big contender in the NFC.

The other upset of the week took place at San Diego, where the Panthers, without his all-pro wideout Steve Smith, were able to beat the Chargers. Jake Delhomme was special again, throwing a last-second touchdown pass which gave the victory to his team. Delhomme looked poised and confident. Above his dramatic ending, they were able to run the football, with 142 yards on the ground against a great Charger defense.

It’s a big win for this team. They reached the Super Bowl in 2004, and John Fox knows how to get the job done and win close games.

Apart from these two surprises, the Dallas Cowboys made a statement, collapsing the rising Cleveland Browns in Ohio. It was an expected W for Dallas; however, the way they dominated the game on both sides of the ball was impressive. Tony Romo dissected the Browns’ defense, as Marion Barber and Felix ‘’the new Jones’’ combined for 142 yards and three scores. The offensive line looked outstanding, giving Tony Romo the whole day to throw, and opening freeways for their running backs. Defensively, they also brought great things to the table, limiting the Browns to 205 yards of total ofense.

It’s a fact that the Bears, the Panthers and the Cowboys won big games yesterday, giving back some credit to the NFC. Moreover, Donovan McNabb had an impressive day, with 361 on the air. If he stays healthy, the Eagles have enough talent to do something special this year.

The Saints also had a good opener, as the beat the Buccaneers. After a disgusting 2007 season, the Saints looked like the team that played in the NFC Championship game a couple of years ago. Reggie Bush was a factor again, and Drew Brees dissected the Buccaneers’ defense.

After Sunday, and without forgetting the defending Super Bowl champions as well as the other two NFC contenders such the Vikings and the Packers to still make their debut, it’s clear that the overall level of the conference is on the rise.

As said, the biggest story of week one is Brady’s knee, but meanwhile, the NFC made statements all day, showing the entire league that the conference is going to be tougher this year.

Period.

Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, and Some Other New Redemption Stories For '08-09

This article is also posted at hoops4life.com, an NBA fan site.

We all love redemption stories. We only have to take a look back to the Olympic basketball tournament to understand about what I’m talking about.

USA Basketball finally clinched the gold medal, recovering their position on the top of the world of basketball. After struggling in recent championships, USA Basketball played with pride and aggressiveness, pushed by the aim of redemption.

Redemption never ends—and this upcoming season, many players will face their own chance at it. Let’s take a look at the biggest redemption stories for the upcoming season:

1. Will Kobe finally win a championship ring without Shaq?

Three years ago, the L.A. Lakers made the most important decision in their recent history. They solved the problem of competing locker room egos by sending the big man to the Miami Heat.

A huge part of the Lakers' fan base supported Shaquille, and the front office was criticized. Things got even harder couple of years later, when O’Neal helped the Heat to their first NBA title.

In last season opener, Kobe was booed by the Lakers’ fanatics after he asked to be traded. Nine months later, after another Finals appearance, things have changed a lot at California.

Kobe was named League MVP, and led his team to the NBA Finals. It seems like he got the monkey off his back—however, after struggling in the finals, his critics are back in charge.

This season, he will have a tremendous shot to silence them.

He is, without a doubt, the best player of the decade, and he will compete this year with a nice supporting cast. We should remember that this team reached the Finals despite of Andrew Bynum’s injury.

Bynum made huge improvements last year, and he was able to dominate the game. He will allow Gasol to play PF, and the defense will improve a lot with his presence.

Kobe will have to show his leadership; put all his heart on the game, and play the best for his team night in night out.

2. Can Jason Kidd lead the Mavericks through the NBA Playoffs?

After clinching the gold medal, the USA Basketball captain will add another chapter to his redemption story. Lots of analysts are arguing that his career is over, and his presence in the National Team was a lifetime honour.

He was the starter, but he didn’t play in crunch time.

Last year, he didn’t help the Mavericks to change the dynamic of their season. After reaching the Lone Star state in February, Kidd wasn’t able to establish his way of playing. His lack of speed and his problems building chemistry around him led his critics to charge against him.

In my opinion, he still has petrol in the tank. This season, he will be with his teammates from the first day of the season, and he will be able to establish his rhythm. He is a leader, and I’m sure that he will be able to dominate again.

3. Will Tracy McGrady finally advance to the second round?

Agents Mulder and Scully should take a look at this NBA X-file.

T-Mac has suffered plenty of situations during his career which have conspire to keep him form winning a playoff series.

His injuries, his teammates' injuries, bad decisions in the clutch, Tayshaun Prince’s appearance—yes, the first time the NBA took notice about Prince was in the 2003 Eastern Conference playoffs. Prince shut down McGrady, and helped the Pistons to rebound from a 1-3 deficit in the first round.

Last season, with his team riding a big wave of momentum, All-Star center Yao Ming got injured for the entire year. The Rockets eventually made the Playoffs, but weren’t able to hold off the Jazz.

Well, no one can ensure that he and his teammates are going to stay healthy—but for now, T-Mac has some reasons to be happy.

Yao showed in the Olympics that he has completely recovered from his injuries, and the front office has brought in Ron Artest. These two players should be the difference from 2008, and help T-Mac to advance to the second round in the playoffs.

Real Madrid Suffer Some Early Season Doubts

Well, it’s too soon to make any real conclusions, but nevertheless, Real Madrid gave a very poor performance yesterday.

As often happened in the Spanish Super Cup, Real struggled throughout the whole game. The defending La Liga champions weren’t able to face their season opener with confidence.

As I said, it’s very early for making conclusions, however we must take a look at some of the worrying aspects the team showed against Deportivo.

1. No weapons coming out the bench

Real fans must be worried by this situation. The team was struggling, and there was not any response from the bench. With Sneijder injured and Van der Vaart suspended, it’s clear that Madrid’s bench is not deep enough. Only De La Red may be able to bring something new to the table, but he didn’t play much.

It will be impossible to compete in all three competitions with this lack of talent coming from the sidelines. Real needed to retain Robinho, and should make players such as Drenthe and Saviola part of this project.

This team has depth in defense with Marcelo, Ramos, Torres, Cannavaro, Pepe, Heinze, and Metzelder to provide the team all that is necessary in this part of the pitch. While the defensive side is covered, Real need something new going forward.

A wing player and a striker are needed to face this season’s challenges.

2. Midfield problems

Real Madrid's midfielders built nothing yesterday. Guti was missing throughout the whole game. Deportivo's pressure drowned Guti, and Real were unable to deliver good ball to the strikers.

Direct football, from box-to-box, was the only tactic used by Real yesterday.

Gago or De la Red must play in this team ahead of Diarra. They can help Guti to deliver the ball, and with them on the pitch, the issue of building the attack is shared. Diarra is a defensive player with no offensive skills. In my opinion, De La Red and Gago can both defend like Diarra, but crucially offer a passing threat in attack too.

3. Again, problems defending off corners

It’s an endemic problem at Madrid, and has been ever since I have been a fan. Both Deportivo’s goals come from corners.

For the first one a mismatch left Mista open, allowing him a free header. For the second, Lopo anticipated his defender, overcoming Van Nistelrooy’s goal.

In my opinion, it’s a lack of concentration. They are all good aerial defenders, yet sometimes they appear unable to match their rivals. A leader is needed in this defense; a man who orders each one to do his job, every time the ball goes out of play.

These two weeks will be an education at the Bernabeu. The team is facing doubts, and their rivals are knocking on their door.

How Good Are The 2008-09 Toronto Raptors?

This article is also posted at hoops4life.com, an NBA fan site.

The NBA's sole Canadian team is facing a big challenge this season: advance through the NBA Playoffs. The Raptors has shown huge improvement over the previous two seasons, but they have struggled in the postseason.

In the 2006-07 postseason, after clinching the Atlantic division title and getting the home court advantage for the first round, the Nets held them off in six games.

Last year, Orlando Magic defeated them in the first round after five games as well, despite different results throughout the regular season.

In 2007, they won 47 games in the regular season, but their lack of Playoff experience and key injuries such as Jorge Garbajosa’s, prevented them advancing in the postseason.

In 2008, things didn't go so well. They had an irregular performance during the regular season, and they won seven fewer games than the year before.

After this step back, the front office has made many key decisions. They placed trust in Sam Mitchell again, solved their point guard dilemma, selecting Spaniard Jose Calderon as full-time starter, and sent T.J. Ford and Rasho Nesterovic to Indiana in exchange for All-Star forward, Jermaine O’Neal.

It is a risky move, but sometimes, you have to take risks in order to step forward. O’Neal has had health problems during the previous seasons, and he has missed 122 games in the last four years.

However, if he stays healthy, he is one of the best inside players in the league. He is a five-time All-Star, and he has had back to back 20+ppg and 10+rpg seasons. He is also a big intimidator—considered one of the best blockers in the league.

At Toronto, he will play the center position, letting Chris Bosh, the team's best player , play the power forward spot. In my opinion, if O’Neal stays healthy, he will be a difference maker, and this tandem will be the best in the Eastern Conference.

We shouldn’t expect a tremendous season from O’Neal. He won’t be the same as his early years in the League; nevertheless, he will be a key part of this team success. His presence will take pressure off Bosh’s shoulders. He will have more freedom, and he could focus on his offensive talents. O’Neal will grab many rebounds, be a defensive power and put about fourteen points on the board.

It’s obvious that O’Neal’s presence will be great for Bosh; but not only for him. Jason Kapono and Jose Calderon will have open jumpers from the perimeter because of the double teams in the low post. Kapono and Calderon are smart shooters.

While O’Neal’s move is a risky one, Calderon’s is quite safe. As I wrote in a previous column, the Spanish point guard is the real deal, and with more talent around him he will be an All-Star. He has an outstanding basketball IQ and will bring smart choices with the ball on ever possession.

Jamarrio Moon will play at small forward, and Anthony Parker will share the backcourt with Calderon. These two players will provide aggressiveness and rebounding support as well as scoring.

Coming off the bench will be Andrea Bargnani, former first overall pick of 2006 NBA draft. He has to have a breakout year, and support his team as a role player. People should forget the background and expect a new role for this player.

Some other unproven players complete the rosters. Backing up Calderon will be European rookie Roko Ukic. He played with TAU Vitoria, along with players like Andres Nocioni, Luis Scola, Francisco Oberto, and Calderon. He has outstanding athletic abilities and plays the game at a break-neck pace, tools that will help as the second point guard, and at times, shooting guard.

These are their weapons—are they good enough?

They can be at least.

They are a solid and more experienced team than in 2007.

In my opinion, Chris Bosh is the leader of this team, and he has to build the momentum which will guide them to the second round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

The NFL's Top-10 Stories for '08-'09

We are seven days away from the kickoff of the 2008 NFL season. Next Thursday, the defending champions, the New York Giants, will host the Washington Redskins in the season opener.

The last season will be always remembered for the Patriots’ path to the perfection, and the biggest upset ever when the Giants held them off on the Super Bowl, voiding them to complete the perfect season.

The offseason has been quite interesting, and the upcoming season is expected to be even better than the previous one. Let’s take a look to the top 10 stories that you need to follow.

10) Are the Browns as good as some analysts think?

There is a lot of expectation around the Cleveland Browns. The entire NFL is expecting greatness from this young team, and some risky analyst put them as real contenders at this point.

They were able to win 10 games in 2007 with Derek Anderson's arm. He made the Pro Bowl and built an outstanding chemistry with Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow. No one knew what Anderson can do. This year, no one will be surprised, and all the teams will be prepared.

For this reason, he will have to take a step forward in order to get the job done. Last year, he struggled a little at the end of the season. He will have to play as solid as in the first part of 2007 and be better in the clutch. He will have more weapons around him, while Donte Stallworth should be a remarkable second option.

Defensively, they have to play better than in 2007 if they want to make the playoffs. They have made good moves, adding Shaun Rodgers and Corey Williams. Both will provide them with strength in the trenches and will make the linebackers’ job easier.

In my opinion, the Browns are a little overrated at this point. We have to wait until October to rate this team.

9) Will the NFC close the gap with the AFC?

A representative of the NFC finally clinched the Vince Lombardi Trophy, but in the previous five or six years, the AFC has been tougher than the NFC.

In my opinion, this trend will continue in 2008. The overall level of the American Football Conference is better. We have settled contenders, such as the Patriots, the Colts, the Chargers, and even the Jaguars. On the other hand, there are only a couple of real contenders in the NFC: the Giants and the Cowboys.

The overall level is also better at the AFC, with emerging teams such as the Browns, the Steelers, and the Titans. Only the Vikings and the Packers look to come off the edge in the NFC.

8) What can Aaron Rodgers bring to the table?

For the first time since 1991, a man not called Brett Favre will start as the Green Bay Packers' quarterback. Aaron Rodgers will make his regular-season debut Sept. 8, when the Green Bay Packers take on the Minnesota Vikings.

In my opinion, Rodgers has less pressure on his shoulders than three months ago. The Favre issue has definitely positioned the fans at his side.

Rodgers has spent three years behind Favre, learning the job, and he should be ready for the challenge of being the Packers' leading man.

He will also count on a nice supporting cast, with a talented group of receivers. Donald Driver is a perennial productive player, Greg Jennings could establish himself as one of the league's elite, and James Jones is a smart third option.

I think Rodgers will be able to deliver the ball well between these three guys. He can also use his legs to buy time or get yards. In my opinion, he will surprise many fans, leading the Packers to another postseason appearance.

7) Is Peyton Manning’s knee ready?

The state of Indianapolis is worried about Peyton’s knee. Manning underwent surgery on July 14 to have an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee and has been on the physically-unable-to-perform list the entire preseason. Manning missed a part of the Colts’ training camp and only got light work in practice last week.

There is no need to say that the Colts are a poor team without Manning, and his recovery is a state matter. He will be at the Colts' season opener Sept. 7, when they take on the Chicago Bears in a Super Bowl XLI revival.

He will be, but there are doubts on how the Colts’ offense will work. As I said, he has missed several part of the training camp, and perhaps he is not in rhythm.

6) Which rookie will have the biggest impact?

It is always tough to predict what a rookie is going to offer in his first year playing Sunday’s football. Many things determine his success; the team, the battle for the roster spot, and many other things.

According to this, I think that some players will have a big impact from the first day. Jake Long will be the leader of the Miami Dolphins' rebuilding. He is a big and talented guy, and he has everything to success in this League.

Glenn Dorsey will also provide fight in the trenches from the first day at Kansas City. He is a monster in the middle and will need double teams from the very first game. In skill positions, we should take look to Rashard Mendenhall (Steelers) and Chris Johnson (Titans).

5) Will the Cowboys finally take the final step?

They have to.

The Dallas Cowboys have all that is needed to be a championship team. They have an outstanding quarterback, one of the best wide receivers ever to play the game, a top-echelon tight end, and a smart defense.

They had this last year, too, but they have also improved the team this offseason. They have added Adam Jones and Tank Johnson.

The Cowboys must win their first playoff game since 1996 and advance to the Super Bowl. In my opinion, it’s their year. They have the talent, the experience, and the poise.

4) Do the Patriots have a shot to be perfect again?

The Patriots missed a lifetime opportunity, losing against the Giants in Super Bowl XLII. Their march to the perfect season looked unstoppable throughout the year, but they struggled at the most important moment of the season.

This year, almost the entire team is back. They suffered a severe loss in Asante Samuel, but I’m sure that Bill Belichick will find the way to the success. Nevertheless, the perfection train is a once-in-a-lifetime one.

In my opinion, they are the main contenders for winning the title, but repeating their dominance is absolutely impossible.

3) Will Adrian Peterson set the single-season rushing yards record?

Adrian Peterson was the sensation of 2007 season. He was named Pepsi Rookie of the Year, and he broke the single-game rushing record. He had 296 yards on the ground, with three touchdowns against the San Diego Chargers. He carried the whole weight of the Vikings’ offense, while he had almost no help from the passing game.

The Vikings air game was the 28th in the NFL in 2007.

This year, reports are saying that Tarvaris Jackson is improving day-by-day. The front office has provided him a new deep threat in Bernard Berrian, and Sidney Rice is expected to have a breakout year. This will take pressure off Peterson’s shoulders, and opponent's defenses will have to focus less on him.

The only remaining issue is his health. Peterson has had injury problems since his sophomore year at Oklahoma. If he stays healthy this season, I’m sure that he will have a shot to set the single-season rushing record.

2) Can Favre lead the Jets to rebound from a 4-12 season?

Unless you have been in a bunker for the last two months, you should know that Brett Favre is back; and he is back with the New York Jets. After the problems with the Packers’ front office, Favre was finally traded to the Big Apple.

The Jets are coming from a disgusting season, with a quarterback dilemma included. Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington—who's been traded to the Dolphins—shared the job in 2007. This season, Favre is expected to play from the Week One.

Favre has brought the momentum back to the Jets, and he has looked well in his first two preseason contests with the Jets. He will have veteran Laveranues Coles, a rising go-to guy in Jerrico Cotchery and many other weapons around him.

If the defense plays smart, the running game supports, and they have a fast start, Favre could lead them to a postseason spot.

1) Can New York repeat as champs?

I have always said that a championship team deserves all the credit before the start of the season, but I also have to be realistic, and realize that back-to-back titles will be almost impossible.

They have had several losses. Gibril Wilson moved away, Osi Umenyiora is done for the season after their third preseason game, and Michael Strahan is retired (the Giants’ front office is trying to bring him back after Osi’s injury).

Last year, they came alive while entering the postseason. Eli Manning showed his best level of play of his career, Plaxico Burress shined, and the D's performance was outstanding.

This year, Manning has to play as consistent as in the postseason, and Steve Spagnuolo has to bring something new to the table. During the offseason, the NFL coaches have been watching tapes of this defense, and I am sure that they have found its faults. For this reason, it will be harder for the Giants to dominate from the defense.

If they can take care of all of this, they will have a shot, but don’t expect it. A slump year is more probable.

Other notable stories: Is JaMarcus Russell the guy in Oakland? Will Jay Cutler overcome his diabetes problems?

Spain Faced USA Basketball for forty minutes in best gold medal game ever

<![endif]-->This article is also posted at hoops4life.com, an NBA fan site.

The Spanish National Team did their best, and forced USA Basketball to bring all their weapons to the table in order to avoid a tremendous upset. The world champions, lead by an outstanding Pau Gasol, put all their hearts on the court. Two days after "the great gold medal game ever" the whole country is proud of this group of players, who nearly touched the Beijing’s heaven.

I would like to introduce my article quoting Coach Gary Gaines in the film ‘’Friday Night Lights’’. His emotional speech expresses perfectly what I felt before, during and after the game.

‘’Being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn’t let them down because you told them the truth.

And that truth is you did everything you could. There wasn’t one more thing you could've done. Can you live in that moment as best you can, with clear eyes, and love in your heart, with joy in your heart?

If you can do that gentleman - you're perfect!’’

Spain was perfect in Sunday’s game.

They overcame every situation during the game. Each time that USA basketball got to an eight or ten points difference, Spain was back. They answered every hit and they played with pride, aggressiveness and heart.

Spain never downed their arms. Teenager Ricky Rubio was able to face the challenge and play with guarantees against point guards such as Kidd, Williams and Paul. Rudy Fernandez, the new Blazers player, brought Spain back to the game many times, with his three pointers and with his layups and dunks. His dunk over Dwight Howard was the greatest moment of the game.

Former Grizzlie Juan Carlos Navarro didn’t miss the date. After a disgusting tournament, Navarro rebirth as a star, getting many points and directing the game many times. Gasol was the full package. He was the emotional leader; he scored; and he fought on the trenches to grab many rebounds.

I want to name the rest of the players because they all did their jobs. Raul Lopez, Jose Manuel Calderon, Alex Mumbru, Jorge Garbajosa, Felipe Reyes, Berni Rodríguez, Marc Gasol and Carlos Jimenez were part of an historic team.

They were part of a team that one day, battling for the Olympic Gold Medal, faced one of top two USA Basketball teams ever; the team that one day decided to play without complexes; the team who nearly upset Kobe Bryant’s team; the team that put tears in Spanish eyes; tears of pride.

I will never forget the feelings this game of basketball produced on me.

Again, I’m going to quote Gary Gaines to finish the article.

‘’I want you to take a moment, and I want you to look each other in the eyes. I want you to put each other in your hearts forever because forever is about to happen here in just a few minutes.

I want you to close your eyes, and I want you to think about Boobie Miles, who is your brother. And he would die to be out there in that field with you tonight. And I want you to put that in your hearts. Boys my heart is full. My heart is full. ’’

My heart is full too.

Thanks, Spanish National Team. Thanks for the effort, for emotions and for the memories.

Massa Dominates Again at European Grand Prix at Valencia

<![endif]-->

Felipe Massa got the job done and brought to the table his candidacy to be Formula One World Champion. The Brazilian did a tremendous job at Valencia.

His dominance started on Saturday, when he got the pole position ahead of championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Massa also dominated the race; only a pit lane mistake put minimal doubts on his victory.

Defending World Champion Kimi Raikonen retired due to an engine failure. At this point, Raikonen was sixth in a race full of problems for him.

Lewis Hamilton qualified second after an intelligent race. He tried, unsuccessfully, to follow Massa’s rhythm, but after struggling, he drove without mistakes in a comfortable second place.

Robert Kubica completed the podium. Glock and Vettel had a remarkable performance, finishing sixth and seventh.

After the first European Grand Prix in Valencia, there are many interesting questions around the championship.

Is Massa a real contender?

Will Ferrari’s engine problems continue?

Can McLaren clinch the constructor's championship?

In my opinion, Massa is absolutely a real contender. He is always underrated, but the reality is that he is very fast. He is, maybe the best qualifier in the business and his race rhythm is outstanding. Only his problems under the rain set doubts on his possibilities.

He will have a shot if Ferrari’s engine problems finish. I don’t now if they are going to find the solution, but the fact is that they have no reliability. They have back-to-back engine failures, which prevented Massa from winning the previous race and eventually had taken the leadership of the championship.

McLaren will be again expecting their failures. Hamilton is a perennial podium driver, and Kovalainen is getting solid race by race. McLaren have the best combination of speed and reliability and it’s their best weapon.

I suppose that all of you watched the race. The environment looked unbelievable and the circuit overcame his first test. Keep reading for some interesting facts from the inside of the circuit.

Alonso "one and done" and a several part of the attendance, too

Spanish star Fernando Alonso struggled in the first lap after being crashed by Nakayima. The crowd goes down, and lot of people missed his interest on the race. Perhaps you are not going to believe me, but thousands of people abandoned the circuit after Alonso’s retirement.

On Saturday, after he wasn’t able to make the Q3, at least the half of the people left the circuit without watching the pole position battle.

They had paid at least 195 euros. No matter. They are supposed to love the F1 sport. Can’t believe it.

No sold out

The first European Grand Prix at Valencia was a huge success. Nevertheless, and due to the high price of the tickets there wasn’t a sold out.

The resale neither worked well, and many people had to sale their extra tickets under the price. As an example, I had three tickets on Saturday’s morning by a total amount of 300 euros, the half of their real price.

Lewis Hamilton constantly insulted by a part of the crowd

Whenever he appeared at the screens, Lewis Hamilton was insulted and minus priced. Don’t get me wrong; I didn’t hear a single racist insult.

Hamilton is considered by Alonso’s fanatics a devil and they doesn’t respect him. I didn’t expect a different attitude from these hooligans. I saw them insulting legend Michael Schumacher couple of years ago, and I got no surprised.

Excellent environment for the Formula One

I recommend you to visit Valencia in 2009. The circuit is great, and the environment outstanding. You can enjoy the race and you can live the Formula One experience. Everything was around the Grand Prix. From special parties at city’s top discos to free busses to launch people to the circuit.

Team USA Basketball: Spain Is the Last Step for the Redeem Team

This article is also posted at hoops4life.com, an NBA fan site.

As all the analysts expected, USA Basketball will face Spain in the Olympics Gold Medal match. The United Stated advanced to the final after beating the defending champions Argentina by 101-81. On the other hand, Spain defeated Lithuania in a heartbreaker game, 91-86.

The United States reaches the final unbeaten, and they have won their games by an average of more than 25 points.

Spain, on the other hand, has had an irregular performance during the tournament. The current World Champions have not showed the kind of play that allowed them to clinch the title a couple of years ago.

This will be the second game in a week between these two contenders. In the first one, USA Basketball destroyed the Spaniards by 37 points. The collective play of the Americans was outstanding. They were able to play aggressively for forty minutes. They also had a pretty nice day from the three-point line, and they absolutely drowned Spain.

All the evidence says that the Gold Medal game will have the same script, but a final match is always different. USA Basketball will try to culminate their march to glory, while Spain will try to achieve the biggest upset in hoops history.

USA Basketball comes into the game with all its players. Spain is hoping for the recovery of Raptors’ point guard Jose Calderon. His status is doubtful at this moment.

Let’s take a look to the keys of Sunday’s game (2:30 ET):

USA Basketball

1. Keep it rolling.

They have to keep on with the same system. USA Basketball has to be aggressive, play uptempo, and take the advantage of their physical superiority. When they are able to steal balls and run down the court, they are unstoppable.

2. Be patient.

The grind of the game will benefit the "Redeem Team." They should be patient in tough moments.

USA Basketball struggled a little bit during the semifinals’ second quarter. They played anxiously attacking the zone defense, and Argentina outscored USA 29-19 over that stretch.

Against Spain, the U.S. must avoid that kind of impatience.

3. Full-court pressure.

Spain will enter the game with two doubtful point guards. Raul Lopez and teenager Ricky Rubio will have problems managing the pressure.

Lopez was supposed to be the third point guard, and Rubio does not have the experience to face Kidd, Paul, or Williams. If Calderon plays over 30 minutes, it will be a bit harder for USA Basketball to shadow him.

4. Forget the previous game.

The United Stated knocked out Spain in group play—but thatdoesn’t count right now. This will be a different game, with a different environment and momentum. USA Basketball has to remember this.

Spain

1. Miracle on hardwood.

Spain has to believe in their chances. They have to put all their heart into the battle, and fight for forty minutes.

The Spanish National Team has to play passionate basketball, treating each play as the last one in their lives. They have a once-in-a-lifetime shot to write their names in Olympic history.

2. Slow the game down.

The defending world champions have to care of the ball, be patient, play twenty seconds, and slow down the game speed. The fast-break points definitely broke the first game for the Americans.

It will be hard, but if Spain establishes their rhythm, they will have the opportunity to surprise the U.S.

3. Zone Defense.

The Americans’ physical advantage makes them impossible to defend one-on-one. But they may have problems attacking the zone defense.

Lithuania was confused when Spain played zone defense. Spain has the Americans will have similar troubles.

4. Be special on the special day.

Spain has not played at their highest level in this tournament. Now, they have to be perfect—playing aggressive basketball and lighting their offense on fire.

The Spanish stars also have to take a step forward. Pau Gasol, Rudy Fernandez, and Jose Calderon—if he finally recovers—have to lead their teammates to the promised land.

Here, mass media, which unfortunately compares Spain with USA Basketball, is confident of the Spanish chances. In my opinion, Spain might has a shot—but can they be perfect?

La Liga 2008/9 Preview: Part Two

In the first part of this preview, we took a look to Real Madrid and Barcelona, the top title contenders. In this chapter, we will analyze the chasing pack. Villarreal, Athletico Madrid, and Sevilla are the main contenders, but can they break Barcelona and Madrid's dominance?

1. Villarreal

They had an amazing performance last year, and are considered the main pretenders for the upcoming season. They are a settled side. They have good players in all the lines—notably Capdevilla, Marcos Senna, and Nihat.

They have also added talented players around the field, signing former FC Barcelona defender Edmilson, former Mallorca midfielder Ariel Ibagaza, and former Valladolid striker Joiseba Llorente in the summer—three players with a bunch of experience in La Liga.

They are a big team, but, are they able to repeat their tremendous 2007/08 season?

Absolutely yes.

They have a deep roster, and they can face all the competitions. They will be contenders in La Liga, the Spanish Cup, and the Champions League.

Do not underrate them. Arguably, they have the best roster in the entire League. They have no obvious weaknesses and can reap the rewards of ten years hard work.

2. Atletico Madrid

The other team from the capital are prepared for the challenge. Atletico finished fourth last season, clinching a Champions League spot. They are a talented group of players coached by an under-pressure manager.

Javier Aguirre is entering in his third season as Atletico de Madrid’s coach. He has achieved the team’s objectives in the past two seasons but now, the aim is a title.

They had the most prolific offensive tandem in 2007/08—Agüero and Forlan combined for 35 goals. Agüero had a breakout season, and I expect him to be even better this time around. They have also signed former Recreativo Huelva player Sinama Pongolle, in order to give depth to the bench.

Simao, Maxi Rodriguez, and Luis Garcia complete their offensive weapons, but the problems last year were in defense.

The front office has tried to fix them with two international signings. Tomas Ufjalusi, the Czech team captain, and Johnny Heitinga should provide them with a huge improvement in the centre of the defense. Assuncao will also help the collective defense from the midfield.

If they have a solid defense, they will be a tremendous team. But, if they continue in the same vein as 2007/08, they will again be a fragile team.

Regardless, expect greatness from Agüero.

3. Sevilla

After back-to-back UEFA Cup titles, Seville had a disgusting season in 2007/08. They struggled in their first Champions League appearance, and they weren’t able to qualify for the European top competition again.

However, we have to count on them as contenders this year, as they had many problems last time. Antonio Puerta devastatingly passed away after suffering a collapse during the first game of La Liga took time to overcome.

The team also had off-field problems. Dani Alves was more concern about his transfer than in playing football. Former coach Juande Ramos also left the team during the season.

Because of these problems, they struggled to find their way. They were so inconsistent, and they couldn't cope with the pressure.

In my opinion, they have a reliable team. Luis Fabiano and Kanoute are a great couple of strikers, and they have good talent around them. Aruna Kone and Diego Capel could have a breakout season. Chevanton is also in position to take a step forward.

In the midfield, they have lost Seydou Keita to Barcelona and Christian Poulsen to Juventus, but nevertheless they are still full of talent and muscle. They have added former Deportivo la Coruna player, Pedro Duscher. The veteran is a proven player in La Liga, and he will be an instant replacement for Keita.

I expect them to be in the hunt again, even if they are under the radar. Ultimately, however, only the grind of the season will show whether there are prepared enough to once again reach the highs of 2007.

Three Point Guards on the Rise for the 2008-09 NBA Season

This article is also posted at hoops4life.com, an NBA fan site.

The point guard position may be the most difficult to play in basketball.

In the modern game, the point guard obviously has to have great game vision. But moreover, he also has to be an athletic guy and a potential scorer.

Top PGs in the game are able to deliver the ball, provide help rebounding, and score when their team needs it. An outstanding point guard make his teammates better and absolutely changes a team.

The NBA is currenylu full of examples. Back in 2001, Jason Kidd joins the Nets, and he led them to back-to-back NBA Finals. Steve Nash also changed the face of the Suns, and in recent seasons Deron Williams and Chris Paul have taken to their teams to top positions in the Western Conference.

Well, at this point, there is no doubt of the importance of having a remarkable point guard. These guys (D-Will, CP3, and Kidd) dominate the game—but who is prepared to have a breakout season in 2008-2009?

Let’s take a look:

Jose Calderon

The Spaniard faces his fourth season in the League, and I expect an All-Star performance from him. This will be his first year as a full-time starter. He shared the job with T.J. Ford last yeat, but now his time has come.

Calderon scores, he is a tremendous three-point shooter, he is physical, and he saves the ball. This guy is the full package.

I've known him since his time in Spain and he is one of the hardest-working guys I’ve ever met in the game. He is constantly improving, and is a game-changing player. This year he will have more talent around him than in previous seasons and he will show the entire league his full skills.

Fantasy owners, sign this guy. He is the real deal.

Projected Stats: 16.8 ppg, 10.8 apg, 3.3 rpg, 1.5 spg

Jordan Farmar

Farmar is entering in his third season in the League. Last season, he developed nicely as the backup to Derek Fisher. He is suited very well to the Lakers’ offense. He averages nearly 10 points per game, but he still has to improve his delivery of the ball. He spent a couple of seasons in college, and he has a large margin for improvement.

He is a nice three-point shooter, and he will have many good players around him. Gasol and Bynum will focus a lot of attention on the low post, so Farmar has to take advantage of his role and become a threat from the perimeter.

Projected Stats: 14.4 ppg, 7.6 apg, 2.8 rpg, 1.1 spg

Rajon Rondo

Honestly, I didn’t trust Rondo so much before the NBA Playoffs. Nevertheless, he impressed me during the postseason.

Coming out of Kentucky, Rondo is entering in his third season in the League. He has amazing athletic abilities and he, when in rhythm, is able to assist as well as the best PGs. He is also one of fastest point guards in the NBA.

The remaining issue for Rondo is his shot. He is not a good shooter, and it makes his game predictable. He is not efficient from the perimeter—and other teams know it.

If he improves his shot, he would be unstoppable. He would take advantage of the double teams against Garnett and Pierce, and be a profitable scorer. He has outstanding game vision, and also helps out with rebounding.

Projected Stats: 14.6 ppg, 7.8 apg, 4.2 rpg, 1.5 spg

<![endif]-->

A new La Liga season is about to start. Real Madrid will try to win their third title in a row. Barcelona will be their main challengers, but not the only ones—Seville, Villareal and Atletico de Madrid will also be in the hunt.

Join me, as I take a look at the contenders to lift the title in May:

1. Real Madrid

The defending champions face the upcoming season with a couple of additions. After the frustrated signing of Ronaldo, the Dutchman Rafael Van der Vaart will give depth to the team. Former Getafe loanee and Spanish international, Ruben de la Red, also rejoins his alma mater.

The team is already built, after a couple of seasons spent signing key players. Casillas is the star of a team that mixes youth and experience. There is no need to introduce players such as Raul, Robben, van Nystelroy, Sneijder or Ramos. They are world class players.

Guys like Higuain, Marcelo, Gago, de la Red and even Pepe are emerging players that could have a breakout season. Pay special attention to de la Red.

In my opinion, Real Madrid have a real team. Above individuals the team has a solid base, and is the favourite to win La Liga again—without needing to sign the selfish Cristiano Ronaldo.

2. FC Barcelona

After a disgusting season, the Catalonians will try to change the dynamic this year. Coach Frank Rjikaard was fired, and former player Pep Guardiola will replace him. Deco and Ronaldinho are out too.

A new era begins for Barcelona, and the summer signings are very interesting. Daniel Alves is, in my opinion, the best right wing-back in the world, and is joining Messi—building an atomic dynamic duo.

Seydou Keita will provide muscle and strength in the midfield. They have also reformed the defence, and the team looks pretty nice.

However, they really need a healthy Leo Messi for the entire season. He is a special player, and absolutely a difference maker.

FC Barcelona also needs Samuel Eto’o—and they need a hungry Samuel Eto’o. Guardiola has to look for a way to keep him motivated.

With Iniesta and Xavi in the midfield, they have a depth and talented team. If they start fast and are able to build some momentum they will be unstoppable.

For me, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are the main contenders. Real have the advantage of being a prepared team, with its own style.

Barcelona has to search its one. They have to learn to play together and adapt to the new head coach. It could be the biggest difference and it makes the start of the championship so important and interesting.

I think that Barcelona have the potential, but they have to fix many things.

Tomorrow, I will take a look at the other pretenders—Villareal, Seville and Atletico de Madrid.

Kevin Garnett: Keep Them Hungry, Keep Them Aggressive

<![endif]-->

It’s the unique way to a historic NBA back-to-back championship.

After beating the Lakers in the sixth and final game of the 2008 Finals, Doc Rivers told one thing in the trophy presentation: Defense.

He pointed to the defense and the attitude as the main reason of the title. The Boston Celtics showed a huge desire to win during the regular season, the playoffs, and the Finals. They are the deserving champions, but are they able to repeat their march to the trophy?

The pressure to win a ring led stars such as Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to join in the same team. They didn’t look for an MVP award, a league championship, or something like this. They went for the title from the very first day.

Kevin Garnett is the key. He is the best paid player in the league. He is a perennial All-Star. No matter. Above of this, he is a leader: The emotional leader of these Boston Celtics.

The ‘’Big Ticket’’ led by example. He spread his attitude to his teammates. 48 minutes during 82 games plus the postseason. No time to relax. The final success was able because of the hunger and the aggressiveness.

Garnett will not have the pressure of winning a title. For this reason, he will have to take another aim. I’m sure that he will find the way to motivate himself.

Then, everything will roll again. Everyone will play his role and the Boston Celtics will be in the title hunt. For sure.

Kevin; keep them hungry, keep them aggressive.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Some Other Golden Ball Contenders

<![endif]-->

With no doubt, Cristiano Ronaldo deserves the Golden Ball Award. His individual performances during the English Premier League and through the UEFA Champions League were amazing. After the European Final the award was clear, but following the EURO 2008 some new contenders are in the hunt. Let’s take a look at them.:

Cristiano Ronaldo: This guy is the triple threat. He dominates the game as much as anyone in world of football. He generates plays around him. He dazzles with the ball in his foot, and he is also outstanding in free kicks and in the air game.

His last season stats were also amazing. He scored 42 goals, adding many assists. He led his team to back to back Premiership titles and the first continental trophy of the decade.

However, in my opinion, he is not as good as usual in the clutch. He completely disappeared against Barcelona in UCL semifinal. He also missed a penalty in the first leg of the eliminatory. In the final, he struggled a little bit after an impressive start.

Moreover, he missed another penalty in the final shootout.

With his national team he was out, unable to help Portugal avoid disgusting quarterfinal elimination. His attitude is also questionable. His trade drama and his selfish position are making him unpopular.

Does he still deserve the Golden Ball Award?

Fernando Torres: This player is the real deal, an all-around striker. In his first season at the Premiership, he broke Ruud Van Nistelrooy's record of scores as a rookie. He got 23 goals in the League, adding six more in 10 appearances in the UEFA Champions League.

His biggest goal was reached a month ago, when he kicked Spain to its first title in 44 years.

In my opinion, he deserves the award as much as anyone. Fernando "Big Time" Torres is a real competitor. He raises his level at key moments. He scored in each Champions League qualifying.

Above this, he scored in the second leg. He shut the game at San Siro with an impressive goal. He destroyed the tie against Arsenal, and took Liverpool to the overtime at Stanford Bridge, beating Petr Cech in the semis.

He also scored the single goal in the EURO 2008 final, and was named Player of the Game.

He is the full package, but does he deserve the award after a unique season at the spotlight?

Iker Casillas: A goalkeeper? Why not? He is the best keeper in the world. He was the least beaten keeper in La Liga. He also had three consecutive clean sheets trough the Spanish march to the European title.

I don’t imagine a better place for his greatest statement. A Sunday Night. EUROCUP quarters. In front, Italy, the history, and Gianluigi Buffon, "the best goalkeeper in the world."

"The Saint" saved a couple, setting his legacy, beating Buffon, and helping Spain to capture a lifetime opportunity.

He is not going to win the award, but does he deserve the prize?

For me, these are the major contenders, but there are also some pretenders. I list them below: Lionel Messi, Steven Gerrard and Cesc Fabregas.

What’s your opinion?

Plaxico Burress Is the Best Wide Receiver in the NFL

He has the size and the speed. He is a go-to guy. He can face double teams and win the jump ball. He can make the big catch. He is able to play each week, despite injuries. He raises his performance in the clutch. Above all, he can fake a slant, go to the corner, and set up the Giants' victory with 38 seconds to play in the Super Bowl.

He really is the full package.

No, I’m not talking about Randy Moss. His name is Plaxico Burress, wide receiver for the New York Giants, Super Bowl Champs.

But, in spite of this, you will laugh at me when I tell you that he is the best wideout in football.

I really believe this to be true. He showed us during the 2007 season, and through the playoffs, that he is the real deal. He beat Ronde Barber, Terrence Newman, and Charles Woodson in consecutive postseason weeks.

He also helped Eli Manning establish his rhythm, making his job easier. He did all of these without major weapons around him. Amani Toomer is a reliable second option, but behind him?

Kevin Boss in not a receiving threat, and Steve Smith was just a rookie. Eli played smart, but at this point, he is not a top-five quarterback. Plaxico is the key player to the Giants’ offence.

My WR Ranking

Well, as I explained, he is, in my opinion, the top receiver in the game. But he is not the only one. The wide-receiver position is one of the most exciting in football. Here’s my ranking. Hope you share yours!

1. Plaxico Burress

2. Randy Moss

3. Braylon Edwards

4. Reggie Wayne

5. Terrell Owens

Honourable mention: Chad Johnson, Steve Smith, Larry Fitzgerald, Marvin Harrison, and Roy Williams.

Is the NBA Dominance Threatened by the New European Market?

<![endif]-->

Josh Childress, Carlos Delfino, Juan Carlos Navarro, Primos Brezec, Bostjan Nachbar, Jorge Garbajosa. What do these guys have in common?

They have rejected their future in the NBA, taking the option to play in Europe next seasons. The strength of the Euro, the weakness of the dollar and the economic power of many European teams is changing the dynamic. Some clubs can compete with the NBA in salaries and players look now to the old continent as a reliable option.

This is disturbing the NBA operation, but, is this new trend a real threat to the NBA dominance?

Well, is thought to predict the future, but in my opinion many things have to change in order to make the European competition a real option of dominance in the next decade.

Current moves are enabled by four reasons:

1. Rich owners: Many rich people are entering in world of basketball. They are billionaires, and they ride their teams as a hobby. They invest millions of euros, but they don’t recover almost anything. They don’t worry about money. They have too much. A perfect example is Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea FC and investor of CSKA Moscow, former Euroleague champion.

2. Contracts free of taxes: Contracts in Europe are free of taxes. When a player signs 12 millions of euros for three seasons, he is paid just this amount. This will earn Josh Childress in his European career. Twenty free millions of dollars in three years.

3. Soccer clubs that maintains the basketball section: There are two major examples: Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Their soccer teams generate millions of euros, and the club invests a minimal part of the total into the basketball team.

4. The strength of the Euro: Today is more interesting working in Europe than in the States. Quite simple.

These are the facts that are setting Europe at the spotlight. Many talented players are coming here to play the game of basketball, but there is much work to do. Basketball in Europe has to capture the momentum, make several changes in the organization of the game environment and build a solid product that is able to compete in business terms with the NBA.

Time to step forward

The European League has to start right now. The local competition is not in their best moment. Only the Spanish one has a reliable group of powerful teams. In the rest of the continent, a couple of teams per country dominate year by year.

Running the European League will generate much more income. The level would be better and the product would be awesome. The product would also be more attractive for television and sponsors.

Nowadays, the Euroleague is broadcast by local stations; unbelievable for a continental event.

All of this would give all the clubs a solid economic base, making them able to face the salaries of emergent European stars, avoiding their departure to the NBA.

Can you imagine a real playoff system involving a seven game series with teams such as Maccabi, Tau, Panathinaikos or Olympiacos?

Sounds great.

So, what’s the problem?

The European mentality: here, the game of basketball is not understood as a business. For this reason I think that, unfortunately, Europe will miss the chance to build a competition able to compete in talent, show and business with the NBA.

In many years, the rich guys will get fed up with basketball, and the dollar will recover its position, and everything will be the same.

I hope to be wrong. In this case, a new stage of dominance will begin, and the threat will be pretty real.

But, by now, this trend is a simple disruption for the NBA.

Real Madrid: No Place for Another UEFA Champions League Struggle

Back-to-back La Liga titles are not enough.

Four consecutive struggles in the UEFA Champions League weigh too much on Real Madrid's previous years profile. Europe's most successful team needs to step forward and be in the Champions League title hunt.

Is Real Madrid ready for the challenge?

Absolutely yes, but many things have to change.

Last time Real Madrid advanced through the quarters was in 2004. Since then, Arsenal, Juventus, Bayer Munich, and Roma have handed Real early exits in the very first qualifying.

Last year was especially tough, because the second leg took place at Santiago Bernabeu.

So what's the problem?

In my opinion, there is a lack of preparation and planning. The team started fast last year, picking up many victories, clinching the group top seed and building some momentum. But all of these disappeared against Roma. They reached the most important part of the season in the worst shape.

For this reason, the team has to focus at this point. The fans are demanding the tenth Champions League title and the team has to be perfectly prepared.

Best roster in many years

Real has an outstanding roster. Comparing with last year's one, the improvement is solid. Players learned to play all together. The team also have a combination of stars like Casillas, Ramos, Pepe, Robben, and Sneijder with many emerging players such as Robinho, Gago, Higuain, Marcelo and De La Red.

The team’s depth is pretty nice. Real Madrid can face any competition with plenty of guarantees. Real will be back at its place this year, and will no doubt advance to the first knock-out round and be in the UEFA Champions League title hunt.

Anything but the semis will be a bust. There’s no place for another Champions League failure.

Vince Young: At This Point, He's Just a Big Bust

Vince Young's third season in the NFL is about to start. The former star of the University of Texas led the Titans to the playoffs last season. Nevertheless, his play did not meet expectations.

In his rookie season, he was named the Rookie of the Year. He took the starting job in the fourth week and finished the year with an 8-5 record.

In 2008, he has to show another level. If he fails, doubts on him will appear, and he will be considered another draft bust.

Honestly, his play should step up. He is an outstanding player, and he should be able to improve his play.

However, his previous season was very poor. He didn’t produce much and struggled in many times of the season.

He threw 17 interceptions against only nine touchdowns. Yes, nine touchdowns in 16 games. Ridiculous. He had 10 games without a single TD-pass, including a postseason defeat at San Diego.

Not only was Young's arm ineffective, but he wasn't a threat on the ground either, averaging 4.2-yards per carry. He also had 10 fumbles, losing three.

With these stats, he has received less criticism than he deserves. His showdown at the 2006 Rose Bowl is still remembered. That game, added with his winning character, has planted a positive impression of him on the critics, despite what his stats say.

But time is against Young. The Rose Bowl starts to get further and further in the past, and with these performances, his team will not be in the playoff hunt another year.

Let Him Run

For these reasons, I consider Vince Young a big bust. Right now, he is a media product. An athlete than appears on a video-game cover and in thousands of ads.

Nevertheless, Young has the potential, and skills, to dominate the game of football. He has to be allowed to use them. Coach Jeff Fisher has to give him total freedom. He can’t misuse him as a pocket passer.

Vince Young will struggle if he is not allowed to run.

It's quite simple; his legs are a difference maker. He is not outstanding at reading defenses or selecting the best choice, but he is one of best scrambling quarterbacks in the game.

If he is able to run, he will be special; his team will be more dynamic and will win a solid amount of football games. But if Fisher tries to change his way of playing, he will remain an underperforming quarterback, and he will be remembered as a big-time bust.

Just another big-time bust...

Eli Manning: What Does He Have to Do to Get the Credit He Deserves?

I’m tired of reading opinions minus pricing Eli Manning’s job. When he led the Giants to the Super Bowl victory I thought that these opinions may change. I was wrong. It seems that the Vince Lombardi Trophy doesn’t counts on Eli’s profile. It seems that four consecutive victories on the road in the way to the trophy neither matter.

I don’t understand what he has to do to make people appreciate him.

Since he arrived to the NFL, he has had to cope with thousands of critics. From San Diego to New York City. Lots of analysts have talked about his lack of leadership, his mental weakness, and similar things. He also has to deal with a perennial comparison with his older brother. In spite of doubts about him, he has responded to each challenge.

In his three seasons of full time starting job, Manning has not missed a game, and the team has never missed the playoffs. What more can you ask for?

A Super Bowl Trophy? Done.

A fourth quarter comeback and the MVP award? Done.

Any surname but Manning

So, what the does he have to do to prove himself?

I have the solution which may give Eli all the credit he deserves.

Well, he has to invent a machine able to take him back to 2004, months before the NFL Draft. Then, he has to introduce him with his mother's surname. He has to avoid showing his partnership with a former league quarterback and a current star quarterback. This way, he will write his own history from the very first day.

Later, he has to go to the team who picks him. Quite simple. If he does these two things, he will be taken as any first round rookie quarterback, then, he will be taken as a sophomore quarterback; and now, he would be taken as any quarterback about to start his fifth NFL season.

It’s easy. Eli’s surname and move before entering the NFL is above his performances. He has to be perfect in order to avoid constant judgment. He will always be a slave of this, and he will always be as good as his next snap.

Dallas Cowboys: The Last Shot

Tony Romo was a Pro Bowl quarterback. T.O played his best football. The defense played smart, and the Cowboys clinched home-field advantage through the NFC Playoffs.

However, the postseason victory never came. For the second season in a row, the Cowboys struggled in January. The Cowboys’ front office has worked hard this offseason in order to take the team to the next level, but will the moves be enough?

The first full-time season of Tony Romo was outstanding between September and December. He delivered the ball pretty well, built a perfect chemistry with Terrell Owens, and made plays all around the field. Sounds great, but then the Giants arrived. The Cowboys’ defeat brought T.O’s tears and plenty of doubts.

Doubts on Romo’s winning abilities.

Doubts on his big-time performance.

And finally, doubts on 2008 options.

In my opinion, the upcoming season's options are untouched, but this may be his last shot. Another playoff upset would set a final point in his book. Jerry Jones’ opinion seems to be similar to mine, and he is determined to win in 2008.

Whatever It Takes

For this reason, he has made some risky moves. He has put the talent above anything else. No big deal to add players who have been suspended for the NFL at some point of their career.

No matter if they are talented guys. Tank Johnson and Adam "Pacman" Jones are two of the best players in the game, and their recent criminal history didn’t deter Jerry Jones.

Fans will judge Jerry Jones on these moves, and they will point to him if something goes wrong.

However, these moves are a statement, a message to the players and the coaches. "Pacman" and Johnson are joining a tremendous defense. And the other side of the team is even better than in 2007.

Marion Barber will be the full-time back (another risky move) and rookie Felix Jones will provide him rest. The offensive line is over the average, and Romo’s weapons are awesome. T.O. is one of the best WR ever to play the game, and Jason Witten is one of the top three TEs in the league. I expect a definitive step forward from Patrick Crayton and a sane Terry Glenn.

There are no excuses. Equally, there are no more chances. This is the Cowboys’ last shot.

Anything but the Super Bowl will be a bust.
