How David Ortiz's Steriod Denial Begins to Shine a Positive Light on MLB

With every eye across the United States glued to the television, David Ortiz finally gave us just a piece of what we have been salivating for this past week.

David Ortiz finally told us that he has never taken steroids.

I still remain skeptical about MLB because of the continuing steroid allegation about not only Ortiz, but the countless others mentioned in the Mitchell Report.

But David Ortiz's rebuttal really struck me differently. And I remain quite impressed by not only his forseen honesty, but the complete aggressiveness he took with the media.

He took a stance of "no fear", and was very solid with all of his responses. I saw very few holes in his explanations, and really impressed everyone.

The MLB Players Association President, Michael Weiner, came out with some very solid facts in his response. Weiner stated first and foremost that MLB did not give away the names of the players who tested positive for steroids in 2003.

Weiner revealed that the government basically came in, took the records, and then later passed a bill that allows them to do things of that nature in the future.

So MLB had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Weiner also stated that of the 104 names that were on the list that was released, only 83 were confirmed tests. The other 19 that were on the list were tests that weren't mandatory, but were confirmed testings.

And of the 83, that number represents the number of "tests"—not necessarily positive testings, just tests—and of that number, a player could have tested more than once...so that number could be even smaller than what is seen now.

One reporter asked Ortiz, "why did it take you this long to just say that you didn't take any steroids or performance enhancing drugs?"

To that Ortiz whipped back and replied, "I have to get my facts straight and in order. I can't just go out and speak without getting everything in order."

This spoke miles for him, and all while without having a sheet to read off of or anything along those lines. That means this was all Papi.

But here is where I see a hope being seen.

Ortiz is one of the biggest advocates against steroids that the MLB has right now. He is now in the position to show the trust, to tell the stories, to truly be the view changer of every soul turned against baseball because of said allegations.

I have not even the slightest idea if Papi would go out and represent the game and want to take on that role, but with this admission, a door has been opened.

As a fan, I would love nothing more than to see this speculation be cleared up, but it is going to take more than one mans denial. It is going to require everyone to take a stand against this, and make a wave of change to save MLB.

So, if the MLB remains smart, they will back David Ortiz on this, and try to get this league back on the right track—away from steroids.

If they do, then this game could brought back to the way it was supposed to truly be.

Michael Crabtree: The Dying Trend Of "Team Player" in The NFL

Okay, let's start off with an example. You are five years old.

Oh, the memories.

You're out with your best friends, playing your first year of organized baseball. Even though your mind only comprehends up to the speed of a children's television program, you still understand that a team is supposed to work together to win.

It's pounded in your head from birth, basically: If you want to win, you have to work together. As I recall, I don't remember my tee ball coaches saying "You know what Gage, you can go take a seat on the bench, you are pretty good and you've been good in the past so I think you've earned the right to not try."

Now, I know I'm not the smartest man, but I understand the "Team Aspect" theory that is brainwashing children from birth.

So here is where I don't follow.

The biggest headline of the night tonight is as follows: 49ers rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree prepared to sit out entire season if contract is not reached.

Okay, please tell me what is wrong with that?

To me, everything is wrong with that.

Crabtree was a solid college player. He definetely produced, and deserved to be picked fairly high in the draft according to his skill.

So now, as Crabtree steps into the NFL, he is demanding contract requirements. Since when did a rookie who has played absolutely no snaps in the NFL, have the "rights" to demand his "deserved" money? That's so completely backwards. Right now, no one even gives it a passing glance because it's almost too late.

We commend those like Chad Ochocinco for "tweeting". We have Donte' Stallworth getting tried for vehicular manslaughter. You read correctly—killing a man with his vehicle.

Now, Chad Ricosuave and Stallworth are in fact not the same things as Crabtree's contract demands, but they have one common similarity, a continuing trend through the NFL as well as MLB and the NBA: Athletes view themselves as completely above the law and the sport itself, and are taking complete advantage of every single opportunity with it.

This isn't a race problem, this is a pride problem. We as a nation are allowing these athletes to continue to raise themselves. We view it as culturally acceptable because of their "noteriety" and so-called "fame," when (in all honesty) we're functioning completely backwards.

We shouldn't be rewarding someone for not doing anything.

We shouldn't view murder as "just another one of those things" just because it is a famous athlete.

For too long, we have allowed small little steps. Those steps got bigger and bigger, and eventually, we are where we sit now. Perched atop Mt. What-in-the-world-happened.

For too long, we've let these guys run above the standards, and it has completely corrupted basically every sport.

Yet we cry and moan when our favorite team loses on a "bush" play, or because we just think the BCS is a load of BS. It all applies. We tell these guys it's alright to socially whore themselves out, that we'll still accept them no matter what they do.

All that has done is dig the hole deeper and deeper, until our league is full of selfish Michael Crabtrees who have lost the complete aspect of the game and truly only seek self benefit.

Once the game reaches that point, it truly will have lost it all.

So will this change an NFL GM's heart who just skims by this while checking his email?

Probably not.

But this does reveal what a downward spiral the sports world is going in. For that, we should at least be on the lookout for when the game is no longer "the game."

SEC Football Roundtable: Meyer, Kiffin, and Spurrier Outside the Box

Well, well, well, the college football season is upon once again. With only 30 days until we officially kick off the 2009-2010 season, it is time to get back on track and find out what is going on around arguably the nation's toughest conference.

So let's just get right into it.

I will break down each SEC team and give a few updates on things recently going on with the university this offseason as well as one question mark facing each team.

Hope you enjoy it.

Alabama Crimson Tide

The Tide come into this season rolling after a fantastic offseason where coach Nick Saban racked up the No. 1 recruiting class for the year and then began to dominate again by adding a few more early signee's to this year's class.

So 'Bama looks to again be stocked with a boatload of talent, but whether that can be turned to success on the football field remains to be seen.

Saban didn't lose many star-powered seniors as Rashad Johnson, Andre Smith, and Glen Coffee all graduated, but have backups eager to take their spots for their time to shine.

The one question between Alabama and another national championship remains the quarterback position. Will Greg McElroy and his 20 career pass attempts really be able to handle the pressure and produce? If he can, then 'Bama may find itself in a place similar to last year. But if not, the Tide could be much more similar to Saban's first year in Tuscaloosa.

Arkansas Razorbacks

Year Two of the Bobby Petrino reconstruction is now under way. Petrino has had a good bit of success as he led the Razorbacks to a huge win over LSU to claim the Golden Boot for a second straight season.

They again recruited quite well with a top 25 class and are still lurking and slowly building a solid program under the radar.

The biggest question remains whether Ryan Mallet will come out with flying colors as well as if the defense can improve from last year and be the "X-Factor" for the Hogs. If so, then they could easily be looking at a solid bowl with the only place to go but up for next season.

Auburn Tigers

Auburn's offseason has been to that of a Steven King book. Lots of odd happenings and still no true solution in the end.

The Tigers dismissed Head Coach Tommy Tuberville this offseason in an unprecedented move and proceeded to fill his spot with Gene Chizik, who led his Iowa State Cyclones to the cellar of the Big 12 division for three straight seasons.

Personally I never liked the hiring; you have to show success and potential to survive in the SEC. If you have not tasted this, then you will never be able to reach it.

My question regarding the Tigers is, on the offensive side of the ball, can they really produce? The Tigers had a horrible showing under Tony Franklin and it never seemed to get any better. If it does, then we may see a completely new Auburn team.

Florida Gators

Well, what a surprise. Tim Tebow actually turned out to be a pretty good quarterback after all. So, after the Gators captured a national championship, they began to get even better as they added more and more solid recruits, and truly didn't lose much of anything on either side of the ball.

That, along with Urban Meyer signing a six-year, $54 million extension to stay in Gainesville, only bodes well for the Gators, as it quickly kills any talk of Meyer leaving for Notre Dame, his so-called "dream job," after the season is over.

So the question simply remains, can they repeat? The talent and everything needed for winning football is there, but if they are not mentally prepared for every game, then one day a team could truly get lucky and that could be it.

Georgia Bulldogs

Well, after another typical offseason of success and silence for the Dawgs, they come back out for another year of SEC Football with a defense that is arguably one of the best in the nation.

They come in returning almost their whole defensive unit, and look ready to take the SEC by storm, which should be good while their offense gets up to par after the loss of Matthew Stafford andKnowshon Moreno

The Dawgs' question remains fairly simple and yet so difficult. How do you replace the production of Stafford and Moreno? If they can get good production out of Caleb King and Co., then I see another good year with a possible championship in the distance in the coming years, but if not then, that definitely stunts the teams growth for sure.

Kentucky Wildcats

In all honesty it has been quite the quiet offseason for the 'Cats this year. They truly haven't gone out and made any "stunning" moves and really haven't done anything on the recruiting front to blow you away either, but they steadily are hanging in there.

Quarterback Mike Hartline comes back from last season to possibly start, and if he can, that would open up receiver Randall Cobb for full-time receiving duties, where he flourished last season.

The question here is, how does the defense hold up with the losses of Jeremy Jarmon and Myron Pryor on the defensive line? If they don't replace them steadily, then expect a big drop by the 'Cats in '09.

LSU Tigers

As the sands of time keep moving, so do the LSU Tigers. While this deep theological reference has nothing at all to do with the Tigers, it remains true that they do keep their recruiting machine so the talent is still flowing.

The Hat, Les Miles, looks to bring this team back to it's 2007 Championship form and it shouldn't be too long as they should compete for the SEC West title pending the growth of Jordan Jefferson at Quarterback.

My question is whether or not the offense continues to click. If Jordan Jefferson and Charles Scott continue to dominate, then we should be seeing more and more of these Tigers.

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Wow, where should we start? Um, the Bulldogs aren't what you would associate with the word "good." While it isn't that they are bad, it's more that they have nothing to be excited about, except for maybe one thing.

So one year after their heroic run with wins of Alabama and other SEC powers, they come down to earth and Sylvester Croom is out with Dan Mullen coming in. Mullen is the former Gators offensive coordinator and should bring a highly successful spread offense to Starksville as well as a bit of change.

This team has a lot of work to do and their question will be, can Mullen handle the beginning steps of rebuilding this team? If so, then these Bulldogs won't have their day at first, but in time they can bring in their players and definitely compete in the SEC.

Ole Miss Rebels

So where did these guys come from? I mean, completely out of the blue, the Ole Miss Rebels took the world by storm and finished with a 9-4 mark while beating eventual National Champion Florida and then Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl.

Jevan Snead came out with fire and dominated the SEC to show he is in fact here to stay. Snead produced leadership as well as amazing quarterback skills to give theRebs a good shot in the SEC West next season.

So, where do they go from here? The question with the Rebs is whether or not the defense will step up in containing opposing offenses. The offense can carry them, but if they truly want to be great, then that defense needs to be better than last year.

South Carolina Gamecocks

So Steve Spurrier didn't vote for Tim Tebow? While this little tidbit was a popular topic of offseason talk, in my mind, it really doesn't matter and was just another instance of the media blowing another story out of proportion.

But the Gamecocks are ready to go and, trust me, talent alone is not an issue. The 'Cocks return another solid offense and defense as Stephen Garcia returns to quarterback and looks poised to tear it up this season as well as Eric Norwood, who is an absolutegamebreaker on the defensive side of the ball.

There are a lot of questions, but whether or not Stephen Garcia, as well as the offensive line, produce remain the biggest ones. If they do, then easily this team will be competing for many years to come, but just as easily, they could have another season like last year. So Garcia's growth is what this season hinges on.

Tennessee Volunteers

While I could go on and on about Tennessee's offseason, I will try and keep it short as I can. The Vols have gone through a lot of change as Lane Kiffin was brought in to take over for Phil Fulmer and this change has brought both good and bad.

The good is the hype that now surrounds the program, as they have added top prospects like Bryce Brown, Jacques Smith, and Markeith Ambles. But the bad is how awful Kiffin has been with the media and how many enemies he has already made. But as I said, it could be worse.

So their question applies to all parts of the team right now. But the biggest one is whether or not the Vols will gain a solid quarterback in recruiting. If they do, then they will be set for years to come, but if not, then I can see "Fire Kiffin" signs rising in the stands this November.

Vanderbilt Commodores

Well if it isn't ol' Dandy Vandy. The pride of the Southland (not really). But on a serious note, this team made some huge strides this past season and that included making it to a bowl for the first time since the Aztecs ruled, and I'm not talking about San Diego State.

Vandy behind Bobby Williams is ready to produce, while, albeit not at a championship level, they are slowly making their way there and before too long they will be sneaking up on some teams.

Their question is simply defense. Will it produce like last year and be consistent? I would love to see the 'Dores produce like last year, but if the defense lets up even an inch, then they may not see a bowl this season.

College Football: If Coaches Had Theme Songs

Have you ever wanted your own theme song?

I'm pretty sure every individual who is reading this has at some point wanted their life to be played out to a song of some sorts. Well in this case it won't be your time to shine, but instead we are giving theme songs to some notable head coaches in college football.

Hope you guys enjoy.

Chris Petersen—Boise State: "I'm Blue" by Eiffel 65

Nick Saban—Alabama: "Leavin'" by Jesse McCartney

Kyle Wittingham—Utah: "Respect" - Aretha Franklin

Paul Johnson—Georgia Tech: "Pour Some Sugar On Me" - Def Leppard

Mike Gundy—Oklahoma State: "Silent Night" by Any Choral Gathering

Jeff Jagodzinski—Ex-Boston College Coach: "When Doves Cry" by Prince

Where Have All the Good Guys Gone in the Sports World?

Today is July 16, the time is 10:55 PM in the Eastern Time Zone. After a long day of working 10 hours, I get home and, after a nice shower and meal, turn on ESPN News.

On the bottom line it is in fact flooded with "whether or not Manny will be booed in his return to Dodger Stadium," "David Beckham and Landon Donovan's continuing feud," and "an analysis of where Allen Iverson will end up."

Now, to me, those headlines don't scream "Man am I glad to be playing in a team sport." They in fact scream "Man I sure do love me some me."

This has become a recurring theme in our sports world. An athlete is an essence taught to fend for himself and to get what he wants above anything else. Oh, and they can entertain the media with wittiness and humor and good charisma.

But if this is what our sports world has come to then we are completely missing the point!

I don't know about you, but as a child I grew up playing baseball. I loved baseball. I played it everyday and slowly I became better and better at it. While playing this little league baseball, the main goal that was always taught to us was to play as a "team." To play "together" as one whole unit so we can come together unite.

So just as I was taught I followed. I knew that sportsmanship was good, heck we shook hands after the game and told each other good game, if we take time to do something like that during something as serious as a little league baseball game then it must be important! Or so I thought when I was a child.

But why do we strive to teach these young athletes to shake hands and congratulate others on their efforts? Sportsmanship.

So if we are taught at a young age that sportsmanship is the way to go and we should always realize and be sportsmanlike, not flaky, but sportsmanlike.

Now this leads us back to the modern day in the situations we sit in now. What are our athletes turning into? What is causing them to change from sportsmanlike little leaguers to punk NFLers?

In a sense with money, contracts, as well as the media I think are truly to blame. Money is and always will be the root of all evil. And it has shown that it can even creep into the sports world.

What truly happened to the days where Larry Csonka was bowling over people and Ken Stabler was leading the Raiders and the Steel Curtain was dominating offenses?

Distractions have popped up every which way, and we have gone in fact from the glory of Troy Aikman and the Cowboys to Spygate?

That is a gigantic change, and one for the worse at that.

But this brings me to my biggest question. Where truly have all the perennial "Good Guys" in sports gone to?

Growing up I was also a Tennessee Titans fan, a product of growing up in Tennessee, I guess.

But growing up I saw Steve McNair as my hero, my idol.

Everything he did was amazing. He was hurt, and he still played, and not only played but won! And then on top of that would go out and do community service, and he had a beautiful healthy family.

This guy had it all and I was so inspired by him.

Now not to make a sad story out of this, but upon his death, we can make the assumption that he may have been involved in an unhealthy relationship with the girl he was "spending time with."

So for the fact that the last thing Steve McNair, my idol, will be remembered for is having an affair and then being killed, that pretty much drowns my hope. I mean to show that even a "good guy" in the NFL can be doing things like this show how sad society and athletes have come to.

So, in conclusion, I raise this question to you. What do you think has caused to sports world to drown into what it is now?

People come and go, but for a generation as a whole to turn it's back on sportsmanship, it really makes you wonder if we will ever get back to true honest sports.

Prosper in Provo: BYU Is Showing It Can Recruit With The Big Boys

Today we are in mid-July, the heat of college football summer recruiting. QB Jake Heaps now is sitting in his home in Sammamish, Wash. with the biggest grin on his face. Not only because he has currently signed with the Cougars, but because he is starting a new trend. He in fact is the face of it.

Back in a press conference in June, Heaps (as well as Texas WR Ross Apo and California LB Zac Stout) all verbally commited to play football for the Cougars. As Brandon Grunney, a BYU reporter, stated, this will be remembered as "the biggest day in BYU recruiting history."

That's a pretty strong statement.

In all honesty the Cougars have been absolutely tearing up the recruiting trail this season with 19 current commitments. That ranks them thirteenth overall in Scouts national recruiting rankings. Bronco Mendenhall prefers to get his work done in recruiting as he has nabbed 65 percent of his recruiting class before August of the previous deadline.

What's funny is this recruiting season is following pattern just as written.

BYU is a private school sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since this school in fact is the only LDS Program in the nation, that allows them acces to the best LDS-Athletes in the nation.

The Cougars can in fact recruit non-LDS students, but they must be very precise with the players they select. These students must in fact be accepting of the Honor Code and if broken these players are up for a possible suspension.

So from this, the Cougars have had to be quite nit-picky with their recruits. When getting players like Heaps, that sets them up and brings tons of national attention to a program that rarely gets such air time.

Heaps is the number one QB rated in many recruiting rankings and had heavy offers from power schools such as USC, Georgia, UCLA, and Tennessee. He's never lost a game in high school, won two state titles, and passed for a whopping 6,000 yards along with 70 TDs.

Heaps definitely has the talent, but has also proven to have the intangibles of leadership, star-power, and publicity around him to bring not only the top LDS Athletes, but the top non-LDS Athletes as well.

In a sense, Heaps is tired of programs like the BYUs, TCUs, and the Boise States being overlooked all the time. He in fact has gone out and passed up these luxorious programs so that he can send a message: No longer will the BYUs of the world be overlooked.

As Utah Senator Orrin Hatch has fought for, the BCS was voted on in congress and Heaps is right behind him. Heaps is hanging hard to bring prominence back to the overlooked "small" programs of the world and this move has definitley got the ball rolling.

If there is anyone looking out for still under the radar, it is in fact BYU.

The sad fact is that it may be too late before anyone notices how good BYU truly will be.

Jimmy Clausen: Ready For Launch?

When Jimmy Clausen stepped off of his high school campus at Oaks Christian we knew this kid had star-power ability. In turn, he showed us he agreed by rolling up in a white stretch-limo.

Does that look a tad too overplayed in retrospect?

Some might say yes, but while the number—and wins—and success haven't necessarily followed, it isn't too late for Clausen to make a success out of his career.

Clausen was, and will always be, heralded as the "gem" of Charlie Weis, his first true "high-profile" recruit.

But as usual, media overlooks the fact that Clausen was not the only five-star recruit nabbed by Weis as highly sought OL Sam Young and RB James Aldridge were both five-stars and were, and still are, overlooked.

Again, many claim and will continue to stand firm against Jimmy's, umm...flamboyant manner in which he handles his business. While he does certainly stand out, and hasn't really backed it up, this criticism is rightly deserved.

But with the pressure of an entire program, and not only "a program," but "The Program" that is most recognized in all of college football.

He had an insurmountable amount of pressure and hopes and dreams resting on his shoulders from day one, and it became that much more whenever Demetrius Jones completely flopped and the reigns where handed to Clausen right there in Bobby-Dodd Stadium that Saturday night.

He then fumbled, stumbled, and rolled to an awful season for the Irish. This was most likely the low-point in the Charlie Weis era, but there was and still is nowhere to go but up.

Clausen also ended up having a "secret surgery" on his elbow to help some bone spurs; however the surgery was not let out by coach Weis, and this only fanned the flames.

So rose the Clausen haters ever more.

The Irish managed to finish a whopping 116th in scoring offense, 115th in rushing offense, and 110th in total offense.

That was mostly acclaimed to the complete and total vanishing of an offensive line, which may or may not be held in contempt to Coach Weis.

The system began to improve and the Irish bumped up to 59th in scoring offense in Clausen's sophomore season and this was a setting trend as the Irish have increased in total offense, rushing offense, passing offense, and scoring offense each of the past three seasons.

Clausen also topped the 3,000 yard mark in passing yards last season as WR's Golden Tate and Michael Floyd proved to be huge playmakers.

Now while Clausen has been seen as overbearing in all aspects of life except on the football field, he still has shown improvement (something some QBs have yet to show, ahem Jonathan Crompton).

"He has all the throws. The long ball. The short ball. He can put the steam on. He can take it off. He can move around the pocket. He gets rid of the ball extremely fast. And he's a good leader. If there's a freshman who could ever start at a four-year school like Notre Dame, it would be Jimmy Clausen."

That is a quote from Jimmy Clausen's high school coach at Oaks Christian. He has watched Clausen grow up from a wee freshman and seen his development. He knows how and what Jimmy will do.

Your take on Clausen all depends on your view.

Is your glass half full? Is Jimmy Clausen just now tapping into his football greatness after a little bump?

Or is your glass half empty? And is Jimmy Clausen an absolute disgrace for his off-the-field antics and not backing any of it up with his sub-par QB play?

The question lies in your hands.

My glass is half full. Call me an optimist, but trends tend to follow through.

LeBron James' Game Five Performance: Why the Cavs Will Win the Series

Just when the series was over, he came through yet again. LeBron James was the knight in shining armor once again. With the Cavs down 3-1 in the Eastern Conference Finals, the odds of a comeback aren't likely.

In fact their odds hover around eight in 100, since only eight teams have ever come back to win a series from being down 3-1. But this is LeBron James, the MVP of the league.

So you are Mike Brown. You are already down by two games in the series and you're heading back home. You have the media on you and your star players' back. So what do you do?

You come out to a roaring lead to begin the game and the crowd gets behind you as you storm to a 35-18 end to the first quarter. Your second quarter is an absolute disaster, you fail to stop the Magic, and yet again you, Mike Brown, chose to put Delonte West on... Hedo Turkoglu?

Wow, I mean coach you should have learned from past losses that matching 6' 2" Delonte West on 6' 10" Rashard Lewis is usually not a good choice for your squad, but you ended up hobbling in to halftime only up one at 56-55.

The third quarter began in the same way, with your Cavs stumbling out to another weak third quarter, but then it got turned around and we were sitting dead even coming into the fourth.

This is where the story gets interesting. LeBron James did what he does, he truly shot the Orlando Magic to death. While LeBron has done this before, he has never had an opportunity like this in his life. This is where our story takes a twist.

The sports world has declared the Cleveland Cavaliers dead, but here's the thing; while Cleveland didn't do anything truly different to mix things up, LeBron managed to bear the load and will them them to another victory.

Here is where my question comes in. Who has LeBron solely and always come short of? It is of course Jordan.

LeBron will never be able to take over a game consistently in crunch time and deliver every time. This is where LeBron can take the next step to being compared to Jordan.

He knows he will always have to live up to him, and he knows that there is only one way to be in that conversation—deliver in the clutch. He now has the stage of well, the world at his feet. Everyone is watching.

If he can take this team on his back in Orlando for Game 6 and carry them to another win in Game 7 back home in Cleveland, that may be exactly what he needs to further his legacy and live up to the hype. If he is ever going to take the next step, this is where it is going to be. He knows this is where it has to happen.

This is where the next step happens. LeBron has the stage, the spotlight is on him.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Shane Mosley Knocks Out an Upset for the Ages

Today, the father beat his son. The Master beat his Student. And Shane Mosley played the Perennial "Father" in all of this in his magical ninth-round TKO of Anthony Margarito.

Things like this just don't happen every day. I mean how often do you see a blue moon? Or a unicorn? Or a 37-year-old boxer past his prime beat a 30-year-old boxer who remains well in his?

This people was much more than a knockout punch from Shane Mosley, or a fight, this in fact was a battle for the century, and Mosley has emerged as the Chimpanzee in the time of monkeys. He in fact, stands apart.

This was NC State-Houston, but better. This was Fresno State-Georgia, but more improbable. This was George Mason-UConn, but bigger. And if the Giants want to talk, then maybe next time.

But how does something like this happen?

I mean a 37-year-old boxer is basically the equivalent of a 44-year-old baseball player, or a 35-year-old running back. Winning and these peoples' names should not be mentioned in the same sentence, no matter what they've done in their prime.

I mean, Tim Tebow doesn't lose.

Chuck Norris doesn't sleep.

And most importantly, 37-year-old boxers don't beat 30-year-old boxers.

Here we have a classic of a battle against all forces, and still Mosley prevailed.

The level of odds against this man in this fight were so high that, most likely they couldn't even be calculated.

But this goes to show that fights are not won on paper.

Today, "Sugar" Shane Mosley defied every single one of the odds.

Today, Shane Mosley won what could be the biggest upset in recent sports history.

Diary of a College Football Fan: Bowl Season Looms...

Look! Do you see it? It's right there, standing with arms wide open ready to embrace us. Do you know what it is? Why of course it's Bowl Season, back and better than ever, allegedly.

The time is upon us. After countless hours of flipping through NBA games of the Hawks and Grizzlies...Wow, groundbreaking action going on there.

But wait, you could always watch Sacramento State play Liberty University in college hoops...

I'm not even going to tread that water, because frankly, I don't want to be proclaimed a racist from Sir Charles.

But this really sparked some good questions, and have in turn led me to a great transition of End of Regular Season to Bowl Season, and also it leads me to a nice transition in my story. Aren't transitions fun?

So with the hiring of Gene Chizik by Auburn, Charles Barkley spoke up by saying, "I look at things from a common sense standpoint, how do you interview Turner Gill and pick Gene Chizik over Turner Gill?"

It's easy chuck, when you look at Chizik's resume, he comes off as a very polished coordinator.

He just had the guts to take on an depleted Iowa State team, who in fact was completely behind the standard, and thus suffered with their play on the field.

Either that, or in fact I am an Auburn biased Tennessee fan.

I look at things vertically, and then decipher exactly the facts and what is truth or not. And in this Chuck, facts are showing that this is not a race issue. Thanks for turning the knob on the Race War back up again though...

But this really posed a great question to me, is it time for the NCAA to adopt the Rooney Rule that has been placed in the NFL and worked quite well so far?

In my honest opinion I think we in fact should. This truly hurts nothing, and in fact really helps minorities at least get their foot in the door.

And of course once this begins and one minority coach and win a National Championship. I wouldn't expect to see the snowball effect beginning. Do you hear that rumble...

But don't worry passengers, we're back on track. We have reached the summit. Now the bowl season kicks off.

And what better way to start it off than with a trio of matchups spread across the states.

First we have the Eagle Bank Bowl pitting Wake Forest and Navy. Woo! I can't wait to see Wake put up 40 points on Navy's defense.

So you don't like Jazz, how about some country music.

Our next game is the New Mexico Bowl as Colorado State takes on Fresno State. Hmmm, not bad, I mean while this won't be a blowout, I still see Fresno taking it home, because c'mon it's Colorado State...Do you really expect Fresno to lose?

Wait, our last matchup brings us some good ol' rock and roll.

The MagicJack St. Petersburgh Bowl that has South Florida and Memphis. Well I'm gonna give you guys three guesses to who will win this game, and the first two don't count.

Obviously I see USF blowing Memphis out of the water, and then maybe taking a scuba dive since they're pretty much playing at home. Don't worry Memphis, basketball is here, it's your time to shine, maybe.

So all in all, I am beyond pumped up, because even though I see every opening day game being a blowout, I still will root for every underdog. That my friends is what Bowl Season is all about: the little guy rising above and taking down Goliath.

Until next time...

P.S. Go Midshipmen!

Why Charlie Weis Deserves to Keep His Job at Notre Dame

What makes a College Football team? Most would say the quarterback makes the team, but many deep football scholars realize it all begins with a strong, powerful, bright head coach.

There have been countless arousing moves made in college football over job switches this offseason, and they aren't getting any lighter. This is Charlie Weis' life, day in and day out: Constant questions, constant threats, constant negativity. In my opinion, the time has come to give the man a break.

Let's take a flashback to one of our friends: Tyrone Willingham, the former coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and now the ex-coach of the Washington Huskies. While he wasn't amazing, he posted a mark of 21-15—a respectable record speaking for three years and bringing in a new system and players.

But like Weis, Willingham took countless shots and eventually was fired from his position in 2005 to then be replaced by current head man Weis.

What good came out of the Willingham fiasco, you say? Absolutely nothing, and if anything, it would have put them in the hole if not for Charlie doing a fantastic job in his first two years.

Weis is currently holding a 28-21 record. While this looks completely awful compared to Ty Willingham, just remember what happened when Weis stepped in. He took over all of Ty's recruits, who had become juniors and sophomores, and they then went on to a Fiesta Bowl berth. Is Weis not sitting in that same position with his players now?

If given this year, a handful of his recruits are ready to take that next step to stardom as we saw this year. This seems logical to keep him and let him truly see if his recruits can do it.

Another note that would completely help solidify Weis for next year is a bowl victory over Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl. A victory, especially a convincing one, would all but show that he is ready to make the leap.

This truly is about more than just shipping a guy off because you don't like him. Give him one more year, and if it doesn't work, then the decision becomes a little easier and more logical to cast him then.

Stick with Chuck—he knows what he's doing.

The Sooner's Summit: Sam Bradford Wins 2008 Heisman Trophy

He did it. It's all over. Send it in Jerome.

All of these are great ending to monumental moments. The same could be added to Sam Bradford's season as it was capped off Saturday night with his capturing of the Heisman Trophy.

Bradford, the amazingly accurate and athletically gifted quarterback, defined what it was to be a Heisman. His numbers of over 4,500 passing yards, the passer rating title, and not to mention throwing for 50 touchdowns. It really is tough to look at that and say he does not deserve the title.

The final count for the voting was Sam Bradford with 1,726, Colt McCoy with 1,604, and Tim Tebow with 1,575. This was in fact the closest race since the 2001 Heisman where Eric Crouch edged Rex Grossman by 62 points and this lived exactly up to it's hype as being the closest in run in years.

You really can't help but to feel good for this kid though. "I was definitely surprised and I think it's everything I imagined," said Bradford when asked about the whole experience. And it seemed destiny that he would win with such gaudy numbers.

Sam also has on his side the complete truth of his team possibly being the greatest offensive team in the history of college football ever. That my friend is an honor.

Oklahoma and Florida face off on January 8th for the National Title as well, and should definitely provide a few sparks as Tebow really wasn't too happy about not garnering the stiff-arming trophy for the second year. But don't worry Tim, you could always come back next year...

You really can't feel good for Colt McCoy. I mean what a total disgrace to see for a kid. If only he didn't announce he was coming back next year before the voting was over. While beating Bradford's team head-to-head, numbers prevailed in the end over McCoy, as usual.

And as stated before, it came down to timing. That is what everything rolls around. That is what won the Heisman.

When you think of Sam Bradford, you think of him rolling up 60's on Big 12 teams. When you think of Texas, you still think of that one loss to Tech. That is the difference. Bradford's timing made the difference in it all. Sadly that is what this world has relished to, but the real question is whether or not we will ever have a true winner? That, I truly cannot answer.

But now we're beginning to see a trend. The Big 12 and Heisman winners, they are running hand in hand. Where are we going as a sport? I can answer with one simple phrase.

The Big 12, where Heisman winners are found.

Congratulations Sam on an astounding season.

Tim Tebow's Heisman Case: A Heart Is Worth a Thousand Yards

This is my third of three articles on Heisman candidates Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, and Tim Tebow. I will be stating in first person their cases to win the Heisman Trophy, including why they should, what they have done this year, as well as their best accomplishment of this season.

Hey everyone!

As you know I'm Tim Tebow, and I really want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for this amazing honor.

It has been a crazy year and to be here now is such a blessing. God has really done so much for me, and to be here now is really all that I need. I am focused solely on this National Championship game, and I plan on laying everything I have on that field, as usual.

I have heard many times that my numbers are nothing like they were last year when I won the Heisman, but that is taking away how my numbers are still good this year, and how truly good SEC defenses are.

At the midpoint of the season, after we just had a heartbreaking loss to Ole Miss, as everyone by now knows I gave a speech to everyone on my team. I stated that I would play harder than anyone in that game and I would give everything I had on every play; no one would play harder.

Look where we are now. We have completely dominated. I have left everything on the field, and I have thrown only two interceptions against stout SEC defenses all year! Only two interceptions thrown! I left everything out there.

My season moment was of course my speech that truly stated how I felt and got everyone on board with me, but also winning the SEC Championship game really left me in awe, and it showed me that we were almost there.

This award would mean a lot to me, but I know that if it is in God's will then I will get it.

Thank you so much everyone for the consideration.

God Bless! Go Gators!

Colt McCoy's Heisman Case: An Efficient Team Is a Happy Team

This is my second of three articles of the Heisman Candidates, Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, and Tim Tebow. I will be stating in first person their case to win the Heisman Trophy as to why they should, what they have done this year as well as their best accomplishment of this season.

Howdy Ya'll! I'm Colt McCoy, as you all know, and I am truly blessed to be here in this position now. Tim and Sam are amazing athletes. I mean that solely from my heart and even if I don't take it home, I still had a great year, and we led Texas football to a great season.

This season has been amazing, after my down year I my sophomore season, I didn't know what I was goin' to do. But Coach Mack got in there with me and worked me real hard and got me back and built me up. I put on some muscle, and we we've been on a roll ever since our first game.

I feel that this year I made the best of what I had even when I had the least. I was faced with adversity and had basically no offensive help, but yet I put up numbers that are extremely similar to Sam and Tim, who had a ton more weapons than I did.

I mean, it wouldn't surprise me to get the "You're not in the Championship game," argument, but I could just as easily be there if our standing were not run by computers.

My best accomplishment of the year was probably beating Oklahoma in our rivalry game; I played great, but most importantly my team did an amazing job of meshing together to beat Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl.

I may not have had as amazing of stats as my competitors, but bum howdy I made it happen when it counted by converting countless times on third downs, an man just leavin' it all on the field.

Hook 'Em Horns!

Sam Bradford's Heisman Case: Numbers Are Everything

This is my third of three articles on Heisman candidates Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, and Tim Tebow. I will be stating in first person their cases to win the Heisman Trophy, including why they should, what they have done this year, as well as their best accomplishment of this season.

Hello College Football fans, coaches, and writers.

The season is finally over and bowl season is upon us. I am currently one of the finalists for the Heisman Trophy Award and I am going to state why I should receive this great honor.

First, I really want to state how grateful I am just to be considered along with my fellow competitors. Tim and Colt are amazing players and have done great things this season with their teams and I will still be great friends with both of these guys after the award is given.

But enough with praising these jokers. It's time to give it up for the man who demonstrated what it truly means to be a Heisman winner. I gave you, the voters, exactly what you wanted. Every game we were in was a shootout and we entertained everyone with our high-flying act.

My stats completely obliterate all of my opponents. My stats make Tim Tebow look like Tim Thomas and Colt McCoy look like The Unreal McCoy. Let's face it, everyone loves the deep pass, the 300-yard passing games, and leading the nation in touchdowns. I did every one of these and then some!

I mean are you really going to pick a guy who comes from Texas and has the ball in his hands every single play? Or a supposed tough guy from Florida who can't even beat Ole Miss? It's time to open your eyes, people, and see that I am standing here as the obvious choice for this award.

And to all the Texas lovers who pull out the whole "Well, McCoy beat you head to head and blah blah blah blah," I have one thing to say to you: Do I look like I play defense?

I was an All-State basketball player and a world-class golfer, but I certainly do not play safety. I cannot make my defense stop Texas. They obviously couldn't stop me, and I did all I possibly could do to keep my team in that game. Colt has nothing on me in that regard.

Oh, and how could I forget, my best accomplishment of the year:

My 30-44, 370-yard, four-TD game against our archrival Oklahoma State.

That's right, we clinched our Big 12 Title Berth with a 61-41 victory.

So, just remember when you place your votes, take a look at that stat sheet and your answer will be right there. I deserve to be your Heisman winner.

Boomer Sooner.

NFL News Review 12/11

So we now have carried the BCS into court. Today a senator from Texas proposed through legislation that college football should in fact adopt a playoff system. To me, this will probably die out, but this could also just be the beginning.

Well let's get to it, we're about to start this baby off like MLB free agency, with a bang, and then a letdown, then another boom. Enjoy.

Kellen Winslow, TE, Browns

Kellen Winslow (high ankle sprain) admits he doesn't know if he'll play again this year, but wants to be a Brown in 2009.

"I love being a Cleveland Brown," he said. Asked if he expects a new contract in the offseason, he replied "I hired Drew Rosenhaus for that." The Browns are expected to shop Winslow for an early-round pick, probably on draft day.

There is an old saying that states that it's good to know when your not wanted. Apparently Winslow has never heard that one. While Winslow's talent is not questioned by any means, if he keeps up his roller coaster of mood swings, then he will not be in Brown and Orange come game day next year. This could actually be a good thing.

Just don't hit an imaginary reindeer this Christmas season.

Tarvaris Jackson, QB, Vikings

Tarvaris Jackson is expected to be the Vikings' starting quarterback in week 15 against the Cardinals.

Arizona's pass defense is far from a shutdown unit, but Jackson isn't even a good quarterback to gamble on this week. The Vikings are sure to use the run heavily and Jackson lacks the accuracy, especially on vertical throws, to be a good bet for production even in the finest of matchups.

It could just be me, but I love to see this. Nothing like an awful quarterback getting a second chance on everything, and he even gets the Cardinals light pass defense, so I can't help but root for him. With a name like Tarvaris, you have to be good, at some point...

JaMarcus Russell, QB, Raiders

CBS analyst Rich Gannon hears that JaMarcus Russell's work ethic is lacking, but doesn't necessarily blame that on Russell.

"The coach comes out and says that the guy needs to...come to work every day and do the work it takes to be successful," said Gannon. "That’s mind-boggling, how, in this day and age, whether it be a coordinator or a position coach or a head coach, wouldn’t demand that the guy come in on Tuesdays and do the work.

"If your QB is not the hardest working guy in the building, you have a problem. I think you learn to do that, you learn to be that type of guy."

Well I can sympathize with Russell. I mean you can only have a positive attitude for so long with Al Davis as your boss. I mean the Jews weren't happy under Hitler, nor were the Soviets under Stalin. It's just basic math. Crazy old owner plus awful team, leads to a huge lack of concern and a total collapse in moral.

Hopefully they get this kid a good coach before too long, he has worlds of potential. But if he doesn't put anything up before too long, he too will be buying his plane ticket out of Oakland too.

Alright folks. Off again. I know your dying to hear more news, but hold strong, more will be on it's way ere I be a liar. See you guys tomorrow. TGIF.

Five Reasons Why Colt McCoy Will Win the Heisman

Saying Big 12 quarterbacks were dominant this year would be an extreme understatement. They literally obliterated any competition and made for some very interesting games. This, however, proves why we have two of our three Heisman finalists from that same conference.

So, as many of us are asking ourselves, who really deserves this award? This is turning out to be one of the tightest Heisman races in the past few years, and finally there is excitement back in of this competition that was a runaway last year.

Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, and Tim Tebow embody all of the characteristics to be considered for this prestigious honor, but I am here to show you why Mr. McCoy has risen above and truly deserves this award.

5. Colt was the leading rusher for his team

While this is overlooked, Colt ran for over 500 yards. Saying he was the leading rusher says that he really lacked the offensive firepower in the backfield like Oklahoma possessed in Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray.

4. Colt's talent on offense was considerably less than that of Tebow and Bradford

Not saying that Texas had no offense, but it really had no Percy Harvin or Jermaine Gresham or Manny Johnson. Colt put up pretty much identical if not better numbers with depletion on offense. That shows he is the leader and the main cog that turns that team and gets it going.

3. Colt was arguably the nation's best dual-threat Quarterback

While Tebow is in this conversation, no one embodied the true role of making every play count and converting in every possible clutch situation. This man proved to be a third down warrior and took nothing for granted. Not a knock on Tim Tebow at all—I just think McCoy embraced and executed just as well if not even better than him.

2. Colt set his tone and was the most consistent player in College Football

Consistency was the target, and it was completely met. Colt, every week, would completely dominate, and you could take his numbers to the bank. He was that motivated and driven towards success. That also in my mind embodies what a Heisman winner is: someone who will consistently dominate no matter the stage or situation.

1. Colt completely shattered the NCAA Passing Efficiency Record

This in my mind stands alone as the deciding factor. Colt has a passing efficiency of 77.6. The previous record was 73.6! That's three points higher than the previous record that hadn't been beaten for the past 10 years! So McCoy was completing 26 passes every time he threw 30, only missing four passes every game.

This is it folks. The winner must be the team leader, but stats are not everything—he must truly be the engine of the offense and be able to do it all. That is exactly what Colt McCoy did and why he is more than deserving of this award.

The Heisman Trophy will be awarded on Dec. 13, 2008 on ESPN at 8:00 P.M.

NFL News Review 12/10

Well. Seeing that Clinton Portis is now "cool" with Head Coach Jim Zorn, we can all dismiss this as nothing, as well as C.C. Sabathia finally finding a home. I guess we can say those are as likely to hit the backburner as Plaxico is to not get jail time.

Today we'll give you your fix for all the intriguing information and give you some humorous tid bits to make you giggle and brighten your day. Strap up.

Daunte Culpepper, QB, Lions

Lions coach Rod Marinelli said Wednesday that Daunte Culpepper's (shoulder) status appears "more doubtful than probable" for Week 15.

For now, the team is calling Culpepper's injury a "shoulder strain," which doesn't shed much light on the extent. Marinelli indicated that Dan Orlovsky is next in line to start, with Drew Stanton second and Drew Henson third. The Colts shouldn't have too hard a time covering the 17-point spread on Sunday.

Haha. That's all the Lions make me do anymore. And I really feel for Calvin Johnson, I mean every week he puts up numbers some way, and yet the man doesn't voice a negative word. Compared to Dominic Raiola who will give you the finger and fight you on his front lawn. As I said, they just make me laugh.

Fred Taylor, RB, Jaguars

Fred Taylor is getting a second opinion Wednesday on the thumb he injured in Week 14.

He reportedly tore multiple ligaments in the thumb, although Taylor claims it's gotten "considerably better" in recent days. Taylor is certain to miss practice Wednesday and a roster move could happen by the end of this week.

What a sad day for Jaguar fans, and a joyous one for Maurice Jones-Drew fantasy owners. This very well may mark the end of Tayor's career, but it really is a big question mark. I will however give my great credits to Freddy. He fought through and truly dropped the tag of being "fragile" and was a good guy in a world lacking them. Thanks Fred, best of luck to you.

Antonio Bryant, WR, Buccaneers

Antonio Bryant called out ESPN's Emmitt Smith and Trent Dilfer for depicting him as a player with "off-field baggage" during Monday night's loss to Carolina.

"I'm a real person and that bull---- Emmitt said on the TV about 'get my life right'...Trent Dilfer mentioned something about getting my life right outside of football. Last time I checked, man, don't be a hypocrite," Bryant said. "A lot of y'all can't really walk on the same side of the street I can walk on and still go put on a suit. So remember that, before you disrespect me like that on TV."

Harsh words from the Bucs Wide Reciever, but can you blame him? He has taken heat for his "off-field" issues all the time since coming to Tampa and he has shown to be a model citizen so far. Seems as we don't know when to stop beating the dead horse, or chasing down the other one.

Tyler Thigpen, QB, Chiefs

The Kansas City Star reports the Chiefs brass will hold a brainstorming session at the end of the season to debate the risks and rewards of building their offense around Tyler Thigpen and the spread formation.

Herm Edwards said he's personally leaning towards keeping things the way they're going, pointing to the marked improvement of both Thigpen and the offensive line. Regardless, the Chiefs will likely target a quarterback this offseason. If they decide to stick with the spread, they will turn to the draft. If they decide against the spread, they will go the free agent route. The next three weeks will be telling.

Wow. I didn't know the Chiefs actually thought so in depth about these things. No lie though I am Jiggy with Thiggy, and he has been quite good this season, but the Chiefs have to grab another QB in the draft. Thigpen has faced cupcake pass D's and hasn't been dominating by any means. Expect a good fantasy playoff run from him though.

Here we are folks, ending time again. Hang in there and I'll bring you guys your news update tomorrow. Until then, stay classy, and don't give anyone the finger.

NFL News Review 12/9

Amazing.

That's what this bad boy will be bringing. Amazement. Well Clinton Portis' coach is a genius, and not to mention the Plax Picketers are at full force, so let's dive right in on this and bring you today's NFL news recap.

Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins

Clinton Portis unloaded on head coach Jim Zorn Tuesday on a radio appearance, sarcastically calling Zorn a "genius."

This is what happens when players have more power with ownership than coaches. "We got a genius for a head coach, I don't know, I'm sure he on top of things. He's got everything figured out," Portis said, clearly unhappy about his lack of touches last week.

"If you've got a problem with me not practicing and can't do it that way, maybe you feel like you need to sever ties, split ties with me? Split ties with me. But don't sit here and throw me out like I don't pay attention, like I don't know what's going on, like I'm making mistakes, I'm the problem" Expect Portis to be very active against the Bengals, despite the comments.

Well, seems as if "so-called" Albert Einstein still lost the game on Sunday, so Portis may want to pull his genius tag down to lesser, more monotone one. This folks cannot be good, even if Portis does apologize, this doesn't help his rep at all. Looks like it didn't take too long for the DeAngelo Hall virus to catch on.

Plaxico Burress, WR, Giants

The NFL Players Association filed a grievance Tuesday challenging Plaxico Burress' fine and suspension by the Giants.

The grievance will not affect Plax's status this season as it won't be even be heard until after the season is over. The union may try to recoup some money, but this isn't going to change the fact that Burress' Giants career is almost certainly finished.

Yipee. When in doubt, call in the NFLPA, they'll dig you out of any problem. Sadly for Plaxico, this digs him pretty deep. If and when he does resurface, a team will take a chance on him, but until then, it looks like dark days for Mr. Burress. However, if there is a rise in drive by stabbings, we know who to pin the blame on.

Jalen Parmele, RB, Ravens

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports the Ravens have signed RB Jalen Parmele from the Dolphins practice squad.

An intriguing Dynasty league talent, the fifth-rounder out of Toledo will provide insurance with Ray Rice (leg contusion) and Willis McGahee (shoulder stinger) banged up. McGahee remains a candidate to be cut this offseason, but Parmele would still have Rice and Le'Ron McClain ahead of him on the depth chart.

This man makes the list solely from his name. Jalen however is an intriguing dynasty leaguer as he could be in the mix for the Ravens starting tailback with a strong offseason, but until then, the only intriguing item of note is that Justin Alexander Parmele deserves his own TV show. There I said it.

Cory Boyd, RB, Broncos

Broncos promoted RB Cory Boyd from their practice squad.

A seventh-round pick by the Bucs this season, Boyd could receive a carry or two as soon as this week against the Panthers. He's behind Tatum Bell, Selvin Young, and P.J. Pope in the pecking order for fantasy value.

Not a bad sleeper pick here folks. Boyd dominated the SEC during his career at USC, and if given the chance, has the body to possibly do a decent job in Denver's system.

But he's sitting behind Olandis Gary, Justin Timberlake, Jason Sehorn, and Stephon Curry in the Broncos backfield. And word has it Shanny has his eye on Harry Potter on the Waiver Wire. There's always Detroit Cory...

Closing time here folks, but I'll be back tomorrow with another recap of the day's hottest NFL story lines.

College Football's All-Paris Hilton Team

What a season! We have endured so many crazy ups and downs and not to mention some crazy QB play from the Big 12 as well. I am here to bring you my All-American team, not only a team that represents the best athletes, but at times giving a shout out to the little man. Buckle up guys, hope you enjoy.

Quarterback

Colt McCoy, QB, Texas

What a year for the Texas-born boy. McCoy stepped up and accounted for 42 total touchdowns, ran for over 500 yards, passed for over 3,000 yards, and held an astronomical 77 completion percentage.

Running Back

Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa

This man deserves some kudos. Pretty much did the best with the least. Ran for over 1,700 yards and ran for 15 TD's in a year where he led Iowa back to a January bowl.

Wide Reciever

Sammie Stroghter, WR, Oregon State

While Stroughter didn't have the most amazing statistical year, he did return to put up great numbers and lead his Beavers to a great bowl game.

Tight End

Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma

Not much competition here. Gresham has a rare blend of amazing size and speed and he put that to use many times this year as he became Sam Bradford's favorite target and was a monstrous red zone target.

Offensive Line

Alabama Crimson Tide

What more could you want? This team protected John Parker Wilson all year and dominated the running lanes. Headed by Andre Smith, this was the foundation of their run this year.

Defensive Line

Penn State Nittany Lions

What a surprise, this team beat teams up and won the Big 10 this year all because of this stout defense. Kudos to JoPa, still getting it done.

Linebacker

James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State

This man is the epitome of beast. His dad was a WWE star and James brings that same intensity to the football field. Great year for James, look out NFL.

Cornerback

Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State

Truly lived up to the preseason hype, and led a very strong Bucks defense that lost a few squeakers besides the USC beat down. (Also looking for other suggestions in this position)

Saftey

Eric Berry, SS, Tennessee

I can't think of a more perfect person for this pick. Berry did it all for the Vols this year, playing offense and defense. He embodies what it is to be a team player and is a touchdown threat every time he touches the ball.

Kicker

Alex Henerey, K, Nebraska

Mr. Clutch. Henerey led the Huskers on many occasions and became their go-to guy when he was needed. Expect more of this in his coming years.

My Heisman choice for this season was in fact, Colt McCoy of the University of Texas.

Hope you enjoyed it, I look forward to the bowls as well as writing my All-Bowl Game team.

Week 14 Fantasy Awards

Well folks, here we are. Fantasy playoffs are on our doorstep and many playoff spots were set in stone this week.

I'm sure that for those of you who relied on FFWWH this year, you're safely sitting in the playoffs. Listening to our advice of consistency and making sneaky deals for players with soft playoff schedules (cough, cough) will do that for ya.

Let's get right to it everyone, it's time to pass out our HAIRY's. Minus all the Pink, Britney, and Madonna drama. Nor will Twilight be mentioned at anytime in this presentation.

The Sixth Sense Award (For Biggest Surprise)

And the Award goes to... Matt Schaub, QB, Texans

Where did this guy come from? I mean, the name is familiar, but seriously, who is he? Schaub, coming off of a four-week layoff from a knee injury, completely destroyed the Packers secondary by scorching them for 400-plus yards.

He also threw for two TD's and even managed to let his stud wide receiver Andre Johnson have a decent game against Pro-Bowl corner Charles Woodson. Pick him up if he's available; otherwise, hope you don't face him in the playoffs as the Texans are finally hitting full stride.

The Last Indiana Jones Movie Whose Name You Can't Remember Because It Sucked So Much (For Biggest Bust)

And the Award goes to... Marshawn Lynch, RB, Bills

Wow. What a stinker Lynch put up. Only three total fantasy points against the Dolphins of all teams.

While they aren't what they were last year, this defense is still able to be scored on by all means. Though Lynch wasn't supposed to obliterate this defense I expected a decent output from him, but instead I was placed with nothing more than the dud he placed on Sunday.

Lord, Del's Cup (Awarded to the Coach who Orchestrated The Biggest Team of Stooges)

And the Award goes to... Mike Smith, Falcons

While Smith has done an extraordinary job with this team, he managed to possibly cost his team a playoff spot with his call on Sunday. On their own 35-yard line with time under five minutes left, Smith chose to punt the ball and promptly never saw the ball again and suffered the 29-25 loss against the Saints.

This was a great game and the call could be called brave, but in my humble opinion, you have to go for it. The Falcons defense cannot stop the Saints high-octane offense, so why not take a shot and at worse you lose the ball at a decent spot, which is nothing huge for the Saints.

Not saying that his team consists of stooges, just his decision was questionable nevertheless.

Paris Hilton Award (For the Player who Screwed the Most Owners This Week)

And the Award goes to...Randy Moss, WR, Patriots

A very, very, very below-average game for Randy against the lowly Seahawks' pass defense. Tons of owners (including myself) were tempted into the Dolphins game and wanted and expected more from the stud receiver.

While his five-point stinker could have been worse, he does have the Oakland Nnamdi's up next, so expect another sub-par performance from Moss.

The Chad John...Ocho Cin....Ochocin....Johnson Award (For Most Overblown Story of the Week)

And the Award goes to...Plaxico Burress, WR, Giants

This comes as little surprise to anyone, as we await the wording on his final verdict for shooting himself in the leg with his illegal weapon.

I'm pretty sure this could not have gone worse for Plax. I mean the man shot himself, and he may even go to jail, and this guy should totally be on Best Week Ever.

Have a great week everyone, and see you guys next week. You stay classy.

College Football's All-Paris Hilton Team: Week One Edition

Week One of the long awaited College Football season is in the books, and boy was it worth the wait. We had 300-yard rushers, upsets, and Michigan losing in The Big House for the second straight year, and not to mention the fact that we all had to face the reality that it was time to turn off the Appy State game and to stop our procliaming that "this is the drive" and "they only need one score and they'll get going."

Well we had our duds and studs and I'm here to bring you the stars of College Football's first week. Though they whole week wasn't pretty, every one of these performances that made this article were. So without further adieu here are the "Paris Hiltons" of College Football Week One.

College Football's All-Paris Hilton Team: Week One Edition

Quarterback

Juice Williams, Illinois

26-42 for 451 Yards and five TD's

Cue the whole "Juice is Loose" saying as Juice had a great game. Granted it was a stagered Mizzou defense, he still threw for a wopping 451 yards with 5 TD's.

Honorable Mention

Graham Harrell, Texah Tech

43-58 for 536 Yards and two TD's

Mr. Harrell could find himself on here a lot this year for one main reason being the system he's in. Harrell gleamed throwing for 536 yards and 2 TD's.

Running Back

P.J. Hill, Wisconsin

26 Carries for 210 Yards with two TD's

The Wisconsin Winnebago truly dominated Akron by rushing for 210 Yards . P.J. Could be in for a huge year and is a Darkhorse Heisman Candidate.

Honorable Mention

Shun White, Navy

19 Carries 338 Yards and three TD's

Wow! I mean I know it's Towson, but these are astronomical numbers! The newest product of the Navy Running Game.

Wide Receiver

Sammie Stroughter, Oregon State

12 Catches for 157 Yards and two TD's

It's a Sammie Stroughter Sighting! As Stroughter sat out last year he looks in for another big year with the Beavers

Honorable Mentions

Naaman Rosevelt, Buffalo

Four Catches for 154 and two TD's

I had to give some love to Naaman Roosevelt. I mean seriously this man deserves his own TV show.

Mark Dell, Michigan State

Nine Catches for 202 Yards and one TD

Dell looks to be the go to guy in a Michigan State offense where Devin Thomas emerged last year.

Offensive/Defensive Lines

Navy Offensive Line

558 Rushing Yards

As I said earlier, I know it's Towson, but still, you have to give credit where credit is due, they completely deserve all the credit they can get for rushing for 600 yards!

Honorable Mention

Illinois Pass Protection

Allowed 451 Yards and five TD's

This was great as the whole line stepped up and proved strong for Juice and the Ilini faithful.

Defense

South Carolina

South Carolina shuts out NC State 38-0

While the offense was putrid (nice word) in the first 3 quarters, the defense dominated and proves to be the only thing holding them up this year.

Honorable Mention

Florida Gators

Florida gives up only 10 points to a potent Hawaii Offense

While they aren't what they were last year, they still are a good offense and Florida completely stomped them. Not to mention LB Brandon Spikes missed the game as well.

Kicker

Louie Sakoda, Utah

4-4 FG's with a Career Long of 53

Sakoda was amazing and proved to be the difference between Utah upsetting Michigan in The Big House. He also punts, the man does it all!

Honorable Mention

Alex Henery, Nebraska

4-4 FG with all of them being between 40-49 yards.

This man stepped up, yielding 17 points and coming through in the clutch. The man has ice in his veins.

Monday's Moron: Alex Rodriguez's Sticky Relationship

What a mess. While this could be used to describe the Atlanta Braves' pitching staff, it is being used to describe what horrific relationship problems Alex Rodriguez is currently enduring through.

Now he's rumored to be dating Madonna (although she's denied it), which I just find humorous, but I also find several problems with it:

1. Why are you doing this now? Right in the middle of the season. Granted the Yankees seem to be on the outside looking in on the playoff picture, but then again, the Yankees are never out of it.

2. Why Madonna? I mean your Alex Rodriguez, you could basically have anyone you want. Elisha Cuthbert? Jessica Alba? Heck, you could probably even steal Eva from Tony Parker. I just don't get it Alex.

3. What was wrong with Cynthia? I mean she posed in Sports Illustrated along with you, and I would add that most think you did a good job with getting her. So why go after Madonna? Ah stupid celebrities, people I will never understand.

So with this whole "deal," what is the end result for A-Rod?

Well, he most likely will go out and play this off as nothing, but how will he deal with having this problem come up multiple times a day from the press?

He doesn't always want to have to answer questions about how his divorce is going and why it happened, and what he plans on doing next in his love life. It gets old, and this eventually will start eating at him.

He still will have to go through with the divorce also, and that won't make it any easier on him either with his wife nit-picking him over every little thing, and while all this is going on, he still needs to be the Leader of the Yankees and step up and produce at an upstoppable rate.

I see that being way too much for him to handle in the end and I really don't see him having a HUGE and AMAZING finish to this year because of this.

A person can handle only so much stress, and just from the looks of it, he will be under a great deal of that. Hopefully he gets it worked out, but this doesn't look to go down easily.

Sibling Rivalries: The Best Sibling Tandems in Sports

So today is our Nation's Independence Day! A time to waste $200 on fireworks, break out the grill, and drink to the fact that we're halfway home to 2009.

Now, Wimbledon is on the horizon this Saturday, as Venus and Serena Williams battle in an all-Williams final.

So what better way to express my "singing joy" for my country, along with the Wimbledon Final coming up, than to combine them both and show you the best sibling tandems in sports."

So here you are, the best sibling tandems in the sporting world that you and I live in.

Peyton and Eli Manning

These two brothers of the pigskin have had their fair share of accomplishments. Peyton already got his ring and held the record for most passing TDs at one point, along with appearing in eight Pro Bowls.

But little brother Eli is no slouch, as he claimed his first Super Bowl title this year over the New England Patriots. Eli seems well on his way to stardom, but will he match Peyton? We'll have to wait and see.

Serena and Venus Williams

Living proof that it's not just the brothers that rule the sibling rivalries. Venus and Serena have dominated the tennis world for the past five years, and they have put their stamp on tennis forever.

These two have met six times in an Open Final, with Serena holding on to a 5-1 mark, but I see it becoming 5-2. That's right, I've got Venus. It's ok; the bandwagon is welcoming members as we speak.

Name That Molina: Bengie, Jose, and Yadier

So we're here for another installment of "Name That Molina!" Well not really, but just to note three of the most amusing brothers in all of baseball.

Bengie remains the best out of the group, as he bats cleanup for the Giants and continues to put up solid numbers. Yadier is on his way to getting better, and well, Jose just isn't good. Jose is the prime example of the hated child in the family. Sorry Jose.

Pedro and Ramon Martinez

Yes, they actually are brothers. And yes, it's obvious who's better, but still we need to give our due credit to Ramon.

He may not be the fastest, brightest, quickest, smoothest, or smartest, but still, we can give him credit because he's the brother of one of the greatest pitchers of this era.

One problem with Pedro is the fact that he's been caught with injuries the past few years, but he was one of the most feared pitchers when he was in his prime.

Tiki and Ronde Barber

I had to include these guys. Even if Tiki is retired and off somewhere, we still need to give him what is rightfully and deservedly his. A congratulatory note from the Giants. Looks as if you did retire at the right time. Ronde still remains a top notch CB for the Bucs.

They both, when playing, were amazing athletes, and they remain to be fairly good TV analysts.

Well there you are, the best sibling tandems, but if you think these brothers and sisters are bad now, imagine the mass chaos that went on inside those homes when they were children. I bet those were some great memories.

But I will keep my word and give my breakdown to the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest 2008.

My inside sources say Joey Chestnut seems poised to keep his title, but the lurking Kobayashi is always a threat.

Though Chestnut seems to be day-to-day after his recent incident at a Krystals: Chestnut apparently went for his 24th Krystal Chik and strained the right, upper mouth-muscle and is still feeling the lingering affects of this incident.

This very well could be Kobayashi's chance to step up and take back what he started.

He too seems in the zone, as always, and has been rumored to use a "dunk-dunk-bite" routine while eating his dogs this year, which could improve his stamina and time by seconds.

But watch for Juris "Dr. Bigtime" Shibayama. I mean, the man has an amazing name; he automatically gets a bump up. Personally, I think he can hold his own.

My Winner: Kobayashi with 64 Hot Dogs Devoured

The Demetrice Morley Story

Demetrice Morley, a highly touted recruit out of South Florida, rolled into Tennessee in 2006 and expected to play. He in fact did play that year with an injury ridden secondary and he showed exactly what he could produce: 51 tackles, seven for a loss, and two picks. Morley looked ready to make a leap to stardom.

Well, Morely had academic problems that made him ineligible and thus he was kicked off the team in the summer of 2007. This was disaster for a young budding student athlete.

But it seems Morley forgot the first part of that duty—to be a student.

Morley was dismissed from the program and left just like that. He had nowhere else to go, so he began living in his Caprice Chevrolet in the streets of Miami.

What was he to do? Turn to drugs? Gangs? Would he consider taking his life? All of these are things that could have happened, but Demetrice wanted more.

Morley had a son in June of 2007 and that was his motivation, his anti-drug, his purpose. His son Deion proved to be the savior in his life.

So after having his son, Morley realized what an opportunity he'd had and realized the fact that he'd thrown it away. It wasn't too late, though. He could still make a difference in his life, and he did.

"Just don't take anything for granted," is the standard that Morley now lives by, as he has lived through what could have been his downfall.

Morley got a job at Calhoun's on the River to pay for his classes at Pellissippi State Technical Community College to improve his academic standing and get him eligible to go back to Tennessee.

It was noted that Morley wanted to come back when he was seen at the spring game. But many players thought it unlikely that he would even try to get his grades back up, and they just figured he would drop out and give up on his life. Morley proved them all wrong.

He remained confident through the whole trip that he would get back to Tennessee. He never gave up on his goal—he kept it in sight and reached it.

Demetrice was re-instated in early 2008 to the Tennessee Football team, and he has been practicing and seems to have the starting safety spot opposite Eric Berry locked down.

"I can't let him down so I have to work hard and give it all I have," says Morley about his son. He knows he has to be his example.

This is a truly amazing story. He was kicked out of school, he was done, his life looked bleak, but did he give up?

He was at a crossroads in his life. One way leads to happiness, but it takes much more sacrifice and hard work. The other leads to unhappiness. It's a much easier road to take, but you remain lost inside and something is continually missing.

This student athlete wanted something different for his family and for himself. These are the stories that should be highlighted and shown because this is what strength and determination truly get you.

Shining a light on a truly captivating story.

Umpire and Player Altercations: Where Is the Actual Line Drawn?

So, on the topic of Edwin Encarnacion being thrown out last night for absolutely no reason.

It perplexes me how the umpires are held in such higher regards above players, and that they are, in fact, abusing their power.

This was also put on my mind with the recent spat with Carlos Beltran, Jerry Manuel, and umpire Brian Runge.

Beltran was upset with two called strikes that he watched fall over the plate, and he was dissatisfied with the calls.

So Beltran, a player who usually keeps these kinds of things to himself, keeps antagonizing Runge as he goes to sweep the plate off.

Manuel, noticing the calls, comes out of the dugout to discus the calls, and this too is a problem to me. Manuel shouldn't have been out there. It clearly states that you aren't allowed to argue balls and strikes. Manuel was in the dugout; I remain solidly sure that Runge had a better call.

But taking nothing away, Runge continues to take the argument on and spares only a few moments before turning and bumping Manuel as he throws him out.

This really upset me. I mean, if ANY player at all, MLB, NFL, NBA, touches an official, he is automatically thrown out, suspended, heavily fined, and not to mention, looked down upon.

So what gives these umpires the right to go out and touch a manager?

They too should have to deal with the whole situation and process players go through when they touch an umpire.

Now, Runge was punished, but to me it was just a slap on the wrist. He had a one-game suspension and was fined $5,000.

This is nothing but pocket change, and a one-game suspension is nothing compared to the one or two-week suspensions players face by even grazing an umpire.

Not to mention the $25,000-$50,000 fine they experience.

This has been a problem developing for some time. Not the "umpire touching a player," as much as it is the "umpire's taking advantage of situations."

Example: Last night, the Pittsburgh Pirates take on the Cincinnati Reds. Ryan Doumit is sent to third on a double to deep center by Adam LaRoche.

The relay comes into Brandon Phillips, who sends it to Encarnacion, and he promptly tags Doumit out by what appears to be a step or two.

But umpire Chad Fairchild rules him safe.

Encarnacion jumps up to defend his case and to tell him he was out by a step.

What does Fairchild do?

He immediately throws Encarnacion out without hesitation.

I can understand getting frightened by having a player jump up right in your face, but he still deserves a chance to explain his case, especially since he was out!

Umpires automatically have the upper hand in any battle, and deservedly so, but still they at least have to give you a chance to explain yourself.

Just because they see you come to them, they don't have the right to automatically throw you out.

This is becoming a huge problem, as it seems every night we have a manager being ejected.

This isn't good folks. We shouldn't have a manager a night being tossed.

A major factor as to why this is happening is the fact that the umpires, not the managers, are the ones beginning to prompt the arguments.

So a manager comes out to check and make sure that the umpire is up-to-date and understands what's going on.

The umpire sees him and automatically has the mindset that he's going to throw him out.

That shouldn't be the first course of action for umpires.

This tells me that it has been put in their heads, and they understand they have authority, and that they should be the ones who use it for good, not to begin arguments.

We often forget that umpires are supposed to be the most cool, calm, and collected guys on the field.

The one's who are supposed to keep their cool, but instead, they manipulate the system and benefit themselves, while keeping a solid reputation.

This, to me, seems like a spreading problem, and we seriously need to take a look into this, especially with the Tim Donaghy scandal in the NBA.

To stop this growing and overlooked problem, we may need to do a little deeper investigating, but the problem is still here, and will remain here until someone decides to step up and take a stand against it.

Clemson Tigers: Your 2008 College Football Champions

Tommy Bowden and his Tigers are always on the brink of glory, yet they somehow find a way to come up just short.

But like Marky Mark, I think the Tigers will be feeling the "Good Vibrations" this year.

Last year the Tigers finished with an 8-4 record, but they again played better than their schedule showed.

Two losses demonstrate this: at the end of the season, where they lost to Boston College on a 43-yard bomb by Matt Ryan at the end of the game; and the bowl game, where Auburn defeated them by three points in OT.

But we're not surprised—this is Clemson, and this is just normal with them.

There was some good that came out of last season. Cullen Harper, a fifth-year senior this coming season, stepped up and claimed the starting QB role while gaining the confidence of his teammates.

He threw for 3,000 Yards with a 65 percent completion percentage and had an amazing 27 TDs with only six INTs.

The defense was stifling, allowing just 18.7 points a game. They return eight starters from that ACC-leading defense. Da'Quan Bowers, the No. 1 DE recruit this offseason, has thrived in spring practice and looks to take over the hole left by outgoing senior Phillip Merling.

Their secondary was the key, and they return all four starters there. Crezdon Butler and Chris Chancellor paired up and were the ACC's most feared corners, and possibly the two best in the Nation.

So their defense has no reason for a letdown and should maintain the same high intensity and lead the ACC again in total defense.

Let's not forget—this is still Clemson, so keep your hopeful thoughts tempered.

Well, the backfield is one of the best in the nation with James Davis, a workhorse who handles the majority of the load and is a great pass blocker. He is the thunder.

Also we have C.J. Spiller, the lightning to Davis' thunder. He is extremely fast and catches the ball well. He is the game breaker who also returns punts and kicks.

Aaron Kelly broke out last year, hauling in 88 passes for 1,081 yards and showing he can be the go-to guy at Clemson. But spring studs Xavier Dye and Marquan Jones have shown that they are capable of handling the receiving roles once Kelly departs.

Their O-line remains their lone question mark. They return only one starter but have three players with starting experience on the line. C Thomas Austin is the returning starter, but RG Barry Humphries and RT Chris Hairston have starting experience from last year.

While this could be their ultimate downfall, it is still possible for these Tigers to gel together and hold their own.

"I've got some questions concerning the offensive line with them being so young. That will be a concern, especially with such a quality opponent in our opener. But, with our returners and leaders, I feel good about the season." - Tommy Bowden

Bowden is still unsure about his line, but he still seems optimistic that they can come through.

Special teams look to be good again. P Jimmy Manners and K Phillip Buchholz both look to capitalize on serviceable seasons. C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford will continue to give the Tigers a dominant return game.

Now to the reason, in my opinion, that pushes the Tigers to the top—their schedule.

The Tigers face what is one of the weaker schedules in the nation and have a fairly easy road to the ACC Championship and onwards.

They open their season against Alabama in a neutral site game in Atlanta. Now this isn't a cakewalk by any means, but the Tigers should still be able to contain the Tide's main threat (Julio Jones) and in the end win the game. This will be a big test for their O-line to see if they can hold their own.

They then have an month-long streak of cupcakes until they play at Wake Forest on Thursday night.

They will come into Wake undefeated, and in a tough matchup, I see Clemson coming out alive in its first road game of the year.

Then they face a rebuilding Georgia Tech team at home, followed by back-to-back road games against Boston College and Florida State.

That should be the toughest stretch of the schedule, starting at Wake Forest and ending with the road game at Florida State.

All three of these teams are not at their best this season. They all still have major question marks, and we doubt whether or not they can hold their own.

While there is a chance that any of these teams could have their game of the year against Clemson, I still feel that the Tigers could in fact handle a game like that. Though it would be a test, it would be a well-needed test.

They end their schedule with Duke, at Virgina, and finally the Battle of the Palmetto State at home against South Carolina.

These games keep them steady and ready for the ACC Championship game, as they will face quality opponents up until the Championship game.

The only pitfall I can see is if they run the table and go undefeated at 13-0, yet are left out in favor of a one-loss SEC team or something along those lines because of their soft schedule.

With everything set in place—returning players on defense, skill positions coming back, QB Cullen Harper leading the offense—I see no reason as to why Clemson doesn't make the jump.

Now all the naysayers will continually try to tell me how their O-line isn't good enough and how the LB core isn't deep enough—but where Bowden lacks in clinching moments, he makes up for in getting his players ready to play.

But this year Bowden isn't controlling the team. Cullen Harper is—and after experiencing the letdown at BC last year, he now realizes what it's going to take to win, and he indeed has the hunger.

But need I remind you again: This is Clemson, and talent only goes so far.

This isn't the normal Clemson team though. There's a newfound hunger eating at the players to challenge each other and a desire to hold each other accountable.

Perhaps this, in fact, is the year Clemson is lucky rather than good.
