Brewers sign Catalanotto to minor league deal

(story courtesy Brewers.com)

The Milwaukee Brewers signed utility man Frank Catalanotto to a Minor League contract on Tuesday, adding a versatile veteran—and another left-handed bat—for organizational depth.

Catalanotto will report to the Brewers' year-round baseball facility in Phoenix for 5-7 days of workouts before he's assigned to a Minor League affiliate, a spokesman said. It's possible that he could eventually replace Brad Nelson on the Brewers' bench if Nelson doesn't hit a hot streak.

Entering this week's series, Nelson, who made his first Opening Day roster by hitting .354 in Spring Training, is 0-for-20 in 18 games. He reached base for the second time this season on Saturday when he drew his second walk.

Catalanotto is a .292 hitter in 12 seasons with three American League teams while playing both corner outfield positions, plus first, second and third base. He spent the last two years with Texas, but was released at the end of Spring Training when the Rangers opted to add Andruw Jones to the roster. Texas swallowed Catalanotto's $6 million salary for this season, so the Brewers would only owe him a prorated portion of the Major League minimum salary for time he spends in the big leagues.

Prior to his release, Catalanotto went 3-for-10 with a run scored for Team Italy in last spring's World Baseball Classic.

He has history with Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, who was Texas' GM in November 1999 when Catalanotto was traded along with Francisco Cordero, Gabe Kapler, Justin Thompson and Bill Hasselman in a blockbuster deal that sent Juan Gonzalez to Detroit. Melvin has since brought Cordero, Kapler and Thompson in for separate stints with the Brewers. Now Catalanotto joins the list.

My Take

I think this should be another great move by Melvin. Catalanotto should be a nice addition, and hopefully he'll provide similar to what Gabe Kapler did for the team. Nelson isn't necessarily hurting the team, but he can certainly get better while receiving regular at-bats in AAA.

With the 26th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft...

The Green Bay Packers select: Clay Matthews, LB from USC.

Analysis: The Packers add a versatile outside linebacker to their 3-4. Matthews' multi-dimensional game serves as the perfect complement to Aaron Kampman. As a credible rushing threat with underrated cover skills, Matthews gives Dom Capers the ability to mix and match rush schemes. Though he only spent one season as a starter at USC, he has the potential to be a solid pro in the Packers' defense.

My Take: I'm not so thrilled with this pick. While Matthews should be a solid pro, I think the Packers could've drafted a better linebacker, with more experience. Rey Maualuga, also from USC, and James Laurinaitis from Ohio State have been successful linebackers for more than just a year.

I'm also not too happy that we traded our secoond and two third-round picks to get him and a fifth round pick. The Packers now don't pick until the fourth round, so they might regret giving up so much. Look for them to trade down in the fourth or fifth round.

Milwaukee Brewers Release OF Trot Nixon

(courtesy Associated Press)

Veteran outfielder Trot Nixon was released by the Milwaukee Brewers, leaving three players competing for two outfield spots on the opening-day roster.

Nixon, who will be 35 on April 11th, was a non-roster invitee with four hits in 38 spring at-bats.

Brewers manager Ken Macha on Wednesday said the decision was tough because Nixon’s career meant so much to him. Macha managed Nixon for four years in Boston’s minor league system.

Macha asked general manager Doug Melvin to release Nixon now so he might catch on with another major league team. Nixon has 137 homers and 555 RBI with a .274 average over 12 seasons, 10 with Boston.

Tony Gwynn Jr., Chris Duffy, and Brad Nelson are the finalists for the two back-up slots.

My Take

It's disappointing that the Nixon experiment didn't work out as well as the Brewers would've liked it, but at least it'll give the youngsters (Gwynn, Duffy, and Nelson) a shot to earn a big league roster spot. Hopefully the Brewers won't regret losing the veteran presence in the clubhouse that Nixon would offer, but maybe we'll see two of these three guys become productive as pinch hitters, runners, or defensive replacements.

Good luck to Trot with finding another team. There's still probably enough left in the tank for another year or two.

Favre "Officially" Retires

(story courtesy NFL.com)

Brett Favre swears this is the real deal—no more last-minute comebacks.

The 39-year-old quarterback retired again Wednesday and insisted he won't look back. Well, at least for now.

"I have no reason to wonder why you would be so skeptical," Favre said Wednesday with a slight chuckle after announcing that he was leaving the game after 18 record-setting seasons.

Favre, who retired last March but returned a few months later, kept this goodbye simple—no tearful farewell or jam-packed news conference. He spoke to the New York Jets on Wednesday morning, telling team owner Woody Johnson, general manager Mike Tannenbaum, and new head coach Rex Ryan that he was calling it a career.

"I have family and friends who are like, 'All right, Brett. Is this the real deal?"' Favre said during a conference call. "To me, it is. It is. Believe me. It's been a wonderful career, I couldn't ask for anything more. It was worth a shot for me to go to New York. I wish I could've played better down the stretch. I didn't.

"It's time to leave."

The Jets placed Favre on the reserve-retired list, meaning the quarterback's retirement paperwork had been filed with the NFL—something he didn't do last winter with the Packers.

"Emotionally, I'm OK with it," said Favre, who spent the day on his bulldozer and doing yard work on the grounds at his home in Kiln, Miss. "I really felt like it was time. Obviously, the circumstances last year were a lot different. Physically, if I felt better, we may not be having this conversation, but I think that's more than anything the writing on the wall."

Favre's decision came six weeks after his only season with the Jets ended in disappointment as New York went 1-4 down the stretch and failed to make the playoffs.

A major reason for the collapse was Favre, who threw nine interceptions in those five games. He said he played with a torn biceps tendon in his right arm that got worse later in the season and needed a cortisone injection after the team's Week 14 game at San Francisco.

"It's something that obviously I was able to play with," Favre said. "I don't think I was nearly as productive as the season progressed, but it very well could be fine next year. I'm well aware of that. But then again, it could linger and bother me throughout the year, and I just felt like it was time. I think that, to me more than anything, was a wakeup call."

Favre insisted that even if he felt better next season, he's still done with playing.

"It's nothing I would second-guess, no," he said.

If this is indeed it for Favre, he leaves the game with a slew of NFL records, including career touchdown passes (464), completions (5,720), passing yards (65,127), regular-season wins (169), and interceptions (310).

"With Brett, there was always the possibility that he wouldn't play the second year," Johnson said. "We were hoping to get one good year out of Brett Favre. We picked him based on, in our opinion, his giving us the best chance to win last season. We were disappointed not to have made the Super Bowl, but we did some very good things with Brett."

The Jets improved from 4-12 in 2007 to 9-7, but the late-season woes cost head coach Eric Mangini his job—and perhaps tarnished Favre's legacy a bit.

"I honestly believe I did everything I could do," Favre said. "I'm proud of everything I've done."

New York hired Ryan to replace Mangini, and he, along with Johnson and Tannenbaum, repeatedly said they wanted Favre to return. Instead, Favre spent several weeks after the season at home—at the suggestion of Tannenbaum—away from football before deciding to retire.

"It would've been fantastic to be coaching Brett," Ryan said. "It's a sad day to see him leave, to see him retiring."

The three-time NFL MVP holds the mark among quarterbacks with 291 consecutive starts, including the playoffs, despite playing through several injuries throughout his career.

"The longevity of his career and his love for the game is truly inspiring," All-Pro kick returner-running back Leon Washington told The Associated Press. "I'm privileged to have played with not only a Hall of Fame QB but also a great role model."

Favre said he felt discomfort in his arm "for quite a while." It turned out to be a torn biceps tendon, and he opted not to have surgery.

Favre said he began to realize the end might be near when he consistently underthrew his receivers in Week 16 versus Seattle.

"I threw it, and it didn't end up where I wanted it to," he said. "That, to me, was an eye-opener."

It wasn't all bad with the Jets for Favre. He threw a career-high six touchdown passes, tying Joe Namath's team record, in a 56-35 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4. Favre also helped rejuvenate the franchise, drawing thousands of fans to training-camp practices.

Favre finished with 3,472 passing yards and 22 touchdowns, but his 22 interceptions were his most in three seasons.

Taken by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 1991 draft, Favre was traded after the season to the Packers for a first-round pick. During his 16 years with Green Bay, he helped lead the team to consecutive Super Bowls, including a victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI in the 1996 season.

"Congratulations to Brett on a remarkable career," the Packers said in a statement. "The Packers organization wishes him and his family well. Brett always will hold a special place in Green Bay Packers history, and we remain committed to retiring his number at an appropriate time in the future."

My Take

At first, I figured "Oh boy, here we go again..."

But then I realized a few things. For one, Favre has an injury. There also wasn't a dramatic press conference. It was as simple a retirement as any other player would have.

I'm actually glad he's done playing, now. In my opinion, he's been retired for a year, already. Once he left the Packers, he was retired in my eyes.

I can't wait for the day the Packers retire Favre's jersey. He is truly a legend, not only in Green Bay, Wisconsin, but all of America.

Milwaukee Brewers 2009 Preview

52 days, 20 hours, 15 minutes. That's how long Brewers fans will need to wait to see their team play meaningful games, again.

It hasn't seemed too long of an absence, but any kind of absence from baseball is a sad thing.

The Brewers, coming off of a 90-72 campaign in 2008, have lost their top two starting pitchers (CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets). They've lost three key relief pitchers (Salomon Torres, Brian Shouse, and Guillermo Mota).

They've lost three key veterans (Gabe Kapler, Russell Branyan and Ray Durham). They've lost a great pitching coach.

What have they gained? The Brewers made a handful of signings in free agency, among those included are: Trevor Hoffman, Jorge Julio, Braden Looper, Trot Nixon, Mike Lamb (re-signed), veteran infielder Craig Counsell (re-signed), and Mike Cameron (re-signed).

Personally, I think we lost more than what we gained. I think that another 90-win season is possible, as long as everyone stays healthy, and contributes regularly.

Of course, there will always be injuries. It happens to every team, in every sport. However, the Brewers will need to rely on their younger stars to carry the team this year.

The team has an older, more experienced look and feel to it. Some say that nothing is left in the tank of legendary closer, Trevor Hoffman. I disagree.

When you look at Hoffman's stats from last season, they aren't half bad. When you take into consideration the team he was playing for, you can't help but wonder how he did so well.

Julio, the Brewers' first signing of the off-season, can be a productive arm in the bullpen. He's even closed for teams, in the past. I feel pretty confident in the back-end of the bullpen knowing that Hoffman, Julio, and (possibly) Villanueva will be around.

Heck, you can even throw David Riske into the mix. (Doesn't anyone else remember that he still plays in Milwaukee?)

The front end of the bullpen will have a different look to it, though. There will almost certainly bet that a youngster will be on the Opening Day roster for the Crew. I predict Mitch Stetter will be the new Brian Shouse.

I like Stetter, and I think he can do just as good a job as Shouse did. Also, Todd Coffey will more than likely have a spot reserved for him. You might even see Tim Dillard and/or Mark DiFelice starting the season in Milwaukee.

So, overall, I think the Brewers' bullpen will look a little something like this, on Apr. 7:

Closer - Trevor Hoffman

Setup Man - Carlos Villanueva

Short Relief - David Riske

Short Relief - Jorge Julio

Long Relief - Seth McClung

Long Relief - Mark DiFelice

Lefty Specialist - Mitch Stetter

I'd rate that bullpen a six or seven out of 10.

As for the starting rotation...it might be a little brutal. The Brewers must make sure nothing happens to any of their starters, otherwise, it could be a long season.

While the rotation isn't necessarily horrible, it could be better. Some people say that Gallardo is the next Sheets, in that he'll always be injured. However, Gallardo's injuries can arguably be described as "freak" or "fluke."

Gallardo and Parra should be OK, Bush might be a surprise, Suppan needs a good year, and Looper should be solid. If anyone goes down, in comes Seth McClung to take their place—at least until Chris Capuano is 100 percent healthy.

When Capuano comes back, possibly some time in May, he could take over for someone struggling in the rotation, or he will be used in the bullpen. An early trade could also free up some space.

The offense is almost exactly the same as last season. The only players the Brewers lost were bench players, and the only players the Brewers gained were bench players. Therefore, I present you my projected bench for the 2009 season:

Trot Nixon - OF/1B

Mike Rivera - C

Mike Lamb - 1B/3B

Craig Counsell - IF

Tony Gwynn Jr. - OF

I think you can expect a couple trades at some point during the season. GM Doug Melvin practically made it obvious when he explained that the reason not as much money was spent during free agency was so the team could leave money open for a move during the season.

I also think that pretty much everyone on the team, even Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder, has something to prove this year.

Yovani Gallardo and Manny Parra have the opportunity to prove themselves as some of the better young pitchers in the game. Jeff Suppan needs to have a somewhat decent year if he wants his job in Milwaukee any longer.

Dave Bush needs to prove that he's a quality number three or four starter. Chris Capuano simply needs to stay healthy (and hopefully have a season similar to his 2005 breakout year).

J.J. Hardy has the opportunity to prove he's Gold Glove worthy. Bill Hall needs to stay consistent (hopefully he can put up numbers similar to his breakout year of '06).

Corey Hart can prove that he's an annual 20-20 threat. Braun and Fielder can prove to be one of the best, young duo's in the major leagues. Trevor Hoffman needs to prove there's still gas in the tank for another year or two. Carlos Villanueva can prove he's the future closer of the Brewers.

I could go on, and on.

The 2009 Milwaukee Brewers have a chance at being a very good, very dangerous team. This year will be all about opportunity. The team is good enough to top last season's Wild Card berth with, hopefully, a Division title and a deeper playoff run this season.

My projected record: 88-74, NL Central Champions, Loss in NLCS to New York Mets.

Milwaukee Brewers: 2009 Preview

Fifty-three days, 14 hours, 31 minutes.

Rickie Weeks still needs to develop into the phenom that he's capable of being.

Looper Joins Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed pitcher Braden Looper to a one-year, $4.75 million contract with a mutual option for 2010.

Looper, a 34-year-old former reliever who moved into the St. Louis Cardinals' starting rotation two years ago, is expected to bolster a Brewers starting five with talent but little depth.

"It's a really good match for me and my family," said Looper, who lives in the Chicago suburb of Palos Heights, Ill. "The big thing is that Milwaukee gives me a chance to win. I'm just a piece, but the nice thing about this team is that the pieces are there offensively and defensively and this gives me a chance to win."

To make room for him on the team's full 40-man roster, Wisconsin native Vinny Rottino, a catcher, was designated for assignment.

Looper will earn a $4.75 million base salary in 2009, and at least $6 million in 2010 if both sides exercise the option. The 2010 base salary will bump to $6.5 million of Looper starts at least 30 games in 2009.

The Brewers have until 10 days after the end of the World Series to decide on their half of the option, and Looper then must make his own decision three days after that. If the Brewers decline the option, they must pay Looper a buyout based on his '09 starts.

Looper earned $5.5 million last season and went 12-14 with a 4.16 ERA in a career-high 33 starts. The Orioles were probably Milwaukee's most serious competitor for Looper's services, at least according to published reports, and the Pirates also reportedly showed some interest. Looper picked Milwaukee for several reasons, chief of which was geography. During the offseason, he and his wife, Shannon, adopted a baby girl from China who required medical care, and the chance to play home games an hour and 45 minutes up the road from his real home was appealing.

So was the opportunity to remain in the National League. Looper was the Cardinals' first-round draft pick in 1996 and has pitched in the NL since 1998 for the Cardinals, Marlins, Mets and the Cardinals again. From 1998-2006 he was a reliever but has found success since moving to the starting rotation before the start of the 2007 season.

"I feel like starting has given me a second life," Looper said. "I watch the games more now, and I feel like it's actually taught me a lot about baseball. It's difficult to explain, but I definitely don't regret the change."

With Looper in the fold, the Brewers head into Spring Training with six viable starters: Yovani Gallardo, Dave Bush, Looper, Jeff Suppan, Manny Parra and Seth McClung. The Brewers will probably wait to make any decisions until later in the spring, but assuming good health for all of the competitors, it could make sense for the team to shift McClung back to a relief role, where he had success in 2008.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin described Looper as, "an innings-eater and a grinder." Looper's 199 innings last season would have led Milwaukee pitchers.

"We'll have to sit down as a staff and figure out with McClung, do we want him to extend out [as a starter] or do we want him in the bullpen," Melvin said. "We still have to figure that out."

Melvin said he had not spoken with McClung since coming to terms with Looper late Monday. McClung has said in the past that he prefers to be a starter.

Finalizing Looper's deal was the Brewers' second order of business on Thursday. Earlier in the day, the team claimed 24-year-old right-hander Nick Green off waivers from the Angels and designated reliever Luis Pena for assignment. Green has two Minor League options remaining and will probably start the year at Triple-A Nashville.

Looper and Green will get right to work. Brewers pitchers and catchers report to Maryvale Baseball Park on Friday for the start of Spring Training. Players are scheduled to undergo physical exams on Saturday—Looper already has his out of the way—and then participate in the first formal workout of the year on Sunday.

My Take

Well, I'm glad the Brewers pulled the trigger with Looper. He's not a huge name, but like Melvin described him, "he's an inning's eater." Looper should unquestionably be the Brewers' fifth, possibly even fourth starter.

There's almost no doubt that that will be the last major move before the season starts. I think the Brewers had a pretty mediocre offseason. It's a pretty big deal when you lose your two best starting pitchers.

It will definitely be an interesting year, and I can't wait for things to get started!

Bucks trade Lue to Magic for Bogans

(pictures courtesy Getty images and NBA.com)

The Milwaukee Bucks have swapped guards with the Orlando Magic, sending point guard Tyronn Lue for shooting guard Keith Bogans.

The move fills needs for both teams, as the Magic recently lost point guard Jameer Nelson and the Bucks lost shooting guard Michael Redd, both to injuries.

Milwaukee, who also received cash in the deal, remains in a virtual tie for eighth in the Eastern Conference with the New Jersey Nets.

Lue, an 11-year veteran of six teams, played in 30 games for the Bucks, averaging 4.7 points and 1.5 assists while sitting on the bench behind Luke Ridnour and Ramon Sessions.

"He was fantastic," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said of Lue. "I know ultimately he wants to coach when he's done playing. I think he'd be an excellent coach. I was very fond of him."

Bogans has played 36 games, including 15 starts, this season for Orlando and is averaging 5.3 points and 3.1 rebounds.

He's bound to get more playing time in Milwaukee while the Bucks try to find a way to win without Redd or Bogut and keep their postseason hopes alive.

"He has size, he can make the corner three, he's an athletic, wing-defending type player, which we need in our division, so we'll see," Skiles said.

My Take

This trade is easily a win-win. Milwaukee needed shooting guard depth, and Orlando needed point guard depth. Easy deal.

Overall, I like Milwaukee's end of the deal, but it's not a huge move.

Bucks' Bogut out at least 8 weeks

The Milwaukee Bucks have announced that center Andrew Bogut will miss the next eight weeks with a stress fracture in his back. The former No. 1 overall pick went through a series of tests earlier this week that revealed the injury. Bogut will need exercise and rest, but no surgery is scheduled.

Bogut's injury is another blow to the Bucks, who are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference but have already lost leading scorer Michael Redd to a season-ending knee injury.

Bogut is averaging 11.7 points and a team-high 10.3 rebounds, but started suffering back spasms after a game Dec. 17 against Philadelphia.

Bogut had missed 13 of the last 18 games, and played under 17 minutes in his last two games before missing Tuesday night's loss at New Jersey.

My Take

This is another huge blow to the Bucks' playoff chances. Bogut was starting to look really good this season, but couldn't avoid an injury.

The team will need Richard Jefferson to step up, along with Luke Ridnour, Charlie Villanueva, and even Dan Gadzuric.

Michael Redd Out for Season

The Milwaukee Bucks' leading scorer, Michael Redd, will miss the rest of the year with torn ligaments in his left knee.

"I'm deeply disappointed but everything in life happens for a reason and this is God's plan for me," Redd said in a statement issued by the team.

"I have faith in my teammates and coaches to continue to work together to make our fans proud. I will be supporting them wholeheartedly from the sidelines and working equally hard to return to the court in the best condition possible for next season."

My Take

I'm so disappointed with this news, that I find myself unable to go into any detail.

To sum things up, this is obviously a huge blow to the Bucks. Not only is Redd undoubtedly the team leader, but he was the leading scorer, and he was just starting to heat up.

I wish Michael a quick, full recovery, and I can't wait to see him back next season.

Milwaukee Brewers Trade for Lefty Wright, Sign Righty Mendoza

Wright learned Wednesday morning that he had been traded from the Yankees to the Brewers for outfield and catching prospect Eric Fryer. The two roster moves were aimed at augmenting Milwaukee's pitching depth.

Wright, who turns 26 on Sunday, has one Minor League option remaining, and was added to the Brewers' 40-man roster, which is now full.

He was the Yankees' third-round pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft and made a brief Major League debut in 2007, when he went 2-0 in three appearances despite a 7.20 ERA and a dubious distinction. On April 22, 2007, at Boston's Fenway Park, he became the second pitcher in major league history to surrender four consecutive home runs.

Wright spent all of 2008 in the Minors, going 10-3 with a 2.72 ERA for three of New York's affiliates.

"I felt like I definitely had a good run," Wright said. "The '07 season was my first year out of [Class] A-ball and I had two good starts at Double-A before I got called up to the Yankees, and I knew that if I put together a good run [in 2008] I would have a shot at an opportunity. It just didn't happen. The Yankees system is just loaded, and unfortunately, I kind of got buried."

Milwaukee could offer a better opportunity. The Brewers plan to break camp with Yovani Gallardo, Dave Bush, Jeff Suppan, Manny Parra and Seth McClung in the starting rotation but they have precious little insurance against injuries.

Former All-Star Chris Capuano will be in camp on a Minor League deal, but he is recovering from Tommy John elbow ligament transplant surgery and won't be an option until May. Fellow left-handers Lindsay Gulin, Sam Narron and Chris Narveson will also be in camp, but none of those pitchers are on the 40-man roster.

My Take

I like the trade simply because it gives us another left-handed option. The Brewers don't have very many lefties, and I can see Wright being a productive option if there are any injuries in the bullpen. Look for this guy to be pretty good in Nashville, and maybe we'll see him sometime during the upcoming season.

As for Mendoza, I have no idea why we bothered to sign him. He hasn't pitched a major league game since 2005, and hasn't had extensive time in the majors since '04. He used to be a pretty decent player early in his career (from 1997-2002), but then he simply disappeared. He has played his entire career with the Yankees and Red Sox, so he has no experience in the National League.

For the past couple years, the Brewers have signed old, washed up relievers late in the off-season. Why? I have no idea. Last year it was Scott Cassidy and Randy Choate.

Cassidy retired shortly after the deal was made, and Choate never appeared in a Brewers uniform. I'm sure the deal is not for very much, but the Brewers could either be "saving" this money for an in-season move, or they could be using it towards a player that will actually produce for the team.

Milwaukee Brewers Sign Rickie Weeks to One-Year Deal

(some text courtesy Brewers.com)

The Brewers agreed to terms with second baseman Rickie Weeks on a $2.45 million, one-year contract on Tuesday.

He can earn an additional $100,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances from 575 to 650. That would be uncharted territory for Weeks, who made a career-high 560 plate appearances in 2008, when he missed two weeks with a sprained left knee. In previous seasons, he was limited by hand and wrist injuries.

In his first year of eligibility, Weeks was seeking $2.8 million, while the Brewers offered $2 million.

The second overall pick in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, Weeks batted .234 last season with 14 home runs, 89 runs scored and a .342 on-base percentage. Weeks re-injured his left knee in Game 3 of the National League Division Series and underwent surgery Oct. 6 to repair the meniscus but is expected to arrive in Phoenix for Spring Training at full strength.

My Take

Hopefully we'll see a lot out of Weeks this year. I, personally, want this guy to succeed. He's young, and still developing, and I think that some people get on him a little too much. I definitely wouldn't be comfortable having Craig Counsell starting at second base for us, so this was a very important signing for the time being.

Only one more player eligible for arbitration is left to sign—Corey Hart. Here's to seeing an agreement within the next week or two.

Brewers Re-sign McClung To One-Year Deal

(courtesy ESPN.com)

The Milwaukee Brewers signed pitcher Seth McClung to a one-year contract on Tuesday, avoiding arbitration. McClung, 27, went 6-6 with a 4.02 earned-run average in 37 games (12 starts) last season. Over five seasons in the majors, the first three with Tampa Bay and the last two with Milwaukee, he has pitched in 136 games (49 starts) and has a record of 23-31 with a 5.55 ERA.

Milwaukee still has two players eligible for arbitration—outfielder Corey Hart and second baseman Rickie Weeks.

My Take

I'm not much of a McClung fan. I really see him as mediocre, and I think the Brewers can do much better. I will dread seeing him as our fifth starter for an extended period of time.

There's no doubt that there are better options for a fifth starter still left on the free-agent market, it's just a matter of the Brewers being conservative with their money. They claim they "want to keep their options open for the future."

While that is a good idea, it's also not a bad thought to re-sign our ace, Ben Sheets. I can't stress enough that he would be critical to our team. I don't think we can rely on a rotation of Gallardo, Parra, Bush, Suppan, and McClung to get us much better than a handful of games above .500.

Milwaukee Brewers Lock up Prince Fielder Through 2011

(courtesy ESPN.com)

The Milwaukee Brewers have reached a preliminary agreement with first-baseman Prince Fielder on an $18 million, two-year contract, pending a physical.

"There's things you have to do to get to that point to finalize deals," Melvin said. "We won't have anything tonight, but there's a good possibility we could have something tomorrow."

Milwaukee renewed Fielder's contract last year for $670,000, and Fielder was eligible for arbitration for the first time. He asked for $8 million and the Brewers offered $6 million when figures were exchanged Tuesday.

He can become a free agent after the 2011 season.

"We'd know his salary for the next two years and still have him the following year when he goes back into the arbitration pool," Melvin said. "He's still our player, but there's an undefined salary for the third year."

In 2007, Fielder became the youngest player to hit 50 home runs, and he batted .288 with 119 RBI. The 24-year-old hit .276 with 34 homers and 102 RBI last year as Milwaukee reached the post-season for the first time since 1982.

My Take

Thank You, Doug Melvin!

This is one of your greatest moves, yet. Locking Fielder up in a multi-year contract is absolutely critical to the future success of the team. It's a huge load off of Brewers fans' shoulders, as one of the cornerstones of the franchise is staying in Milwaukee.

Rumors were flying that Fielder would have been traded sometime during the season for pitching depth, just as soon as Mat Gamel, now arguably the Brewers' best prospect, was ready for extended playing time in the majors.

Now, we can use Gamel as a possible platoon option if current third baseman Bill Hall begins to struggle at any point.

The Brewers look much better now, knowing that their young stud will be sticking around for a while. We still could use some work on the rotation and bullpen, so we'll see what happens in the next week or so. Hopefully the next move will be another re-signing, keeping ace Ben Sheets with the team.

Milwaukee Brewers Lock Up Prince Fielder Through 2011

Milwaukee Brewers Re-Sign Dave Bush to One-Year, $4 Million Deal

(courtesy Brewers.com)

The Milwaukee Brewers avoided arbitration by agreeing to sign pitcher Dave Bush to a $4 million, one-year contract on Thursday.

The 29-year-old right-hander was 9-10 with a 4.18 ERA in 31 outings last year, including 29 starts. In his final 18 games of the season, Bush went 7-3 with a 3.23 ERA. He was the starter and winning pitcher in the only game the Brewers won during their first-round playoff series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Bush made $2.5 million last season.

Four Brewers remained eligible to file for arbitration Thursday: first baseman Prince Fielder, right fielder Corey Hart, second baseman Rickie Weeks and right-hander Seth McClung.

My Take

While it was a smart move for the Brewers to lock up Bush, I think it should've been for a little less money. I'm not sure if Bush is really worth $4 million.

Next up on the "Hoping to Avoid Arbitration" list for the Brewers should be Prince Fielder and Corey Hart, for sure.

Hopefully we'll see them signed to long-term contracts, seeing as we have the extra money from missing out on CC Sabathia.

Milwaukee Brewers Resign J.J. Hardy to One-Year Deal

Hardy to a one-year, $4.65 million contract on Monday and avoided arbitration.

Hardy, 26, batted .283 with 24 home runs and 74 RBIs in 146 games last season and helped the Brewers win the National League Wild Card.

Hardy, who made $2.65 million last year, is the third player in club history to hit 20 or more home runs in two separate seasons as a shortstop, joining Robin Yount and Jose Hernandez.

The Brewers still have five players who are arbitration eligible: pitchers Dave Bush and Seth McClung, first baseman Prince Fielder, outfielder Corey Hart and second baseman Rickie Weeks.

Fielder and Hart are eligible for the first time.

My Take:

Hopefully the next step for the Brewers will be signing Hardy to a long-term contract.

(quotes courtesy Brewers.com)

The Brewers have agreed to terms with free-agent closer Trevor Hoffman, acquiring the former Padres right-hander who is the all-time leader with 554 saves.

Hoffman will earn a $6 million base salary in 2009 with up to $1.5 million in incentives based on games finished, beginning with No. 38 and ending with 52, MLB.com has learned. There is no option for a second year. Hoffman earned $7.5 million for the Padres this past season, the last year of his three-year, $21 million contract.

"I'm excited about a new beginning in Milwaukee," Hoffman said. "The Brewers were aggressive in pursuing me and that ultimately made a big difference in my decision."

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin would not talk about details of the negotiations, but said he felt good about his team's chances of signing Hoffman, who parted ways with the Padres in November after nearly 16 seasons when the club took a $4 million, one-year offer off the table.

"It's out of my hands," Melvin said. "I'm not the one to say a deal is done. The agent is."

According to Hoffman's agent, Rick Thurman, both the Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers had offered Hoffman a one-year contract with an option for 2010. Melvin wouldn't say whether the Brewers had to guarantee the second year of the deal to pry Hoffman, a native of Southern California, away from the West Coast.

Hoffman had been in the market since early November when the Padres took a one-year deal worth $4 million guaranteed with an option for the same money off the table, ending his 16-year tenure in San Diego.

Hoffman may have been eyeing one last run at the Padres before deciding on the Brewers, but by late afternoon San Diego majority owner John Moores said that wasn't going to happen.

"We're not getting into a bidding war with anybody over Trevor," Moores said. "It'll be strange to see him in another uniform, especially for me. But it's rare that any player spends his whole career with one organization anymore. I hope he has a great year."

For Hoffman, who is from Anaheim and now lives in North County San Diego, signing with the Dodgers would have kept him close to home. But in Los Angeles, hard-throwing right-hander Jonathan Broxton was the closer at the end of the season. He replaced the injured Takashi Saito, who has since been non-tendered, and Broxton had 14 saves.

Hoffman, 41, is intent on reaching the 600-save plateau and won't sign anywhere he's not the closer. In Milwaukee he'll be the guy after the retirement of Solomon Torres and the departure of free agent Eric Gagne after one shaky year in the Brewers' pen.

Other than free agent pick-up Jorge Julio, who has not been a full-time closer since the first half of 2007, the Brewers have no experienced in-house options.

"I gave him a compliment on his career, and his professionalism," Brewers' manager Ken Macha said when he called Hoffman. "A guy with Hoffman's experience and track record, what he's done over the years, would bring a lot of confidence to your team," Macha said. "This guy is a tremendous individual, and he could have a great influence on the young guys on our staff."

The Brewers had gotten the feeling all winter that Hoffman, a Californian who had pitched for the Padres since he was traded to San Diego by the Marlins in 1993, was cool on the idea of moving to the middle of the country. But Hoffman said after his sudden divorce from the Padres that he was willing to look at any situation.

Macha determined that Milwaukee's priority was a top-notch closer and Hoffman should be the guy.

The team showed some interest in left-hander Brian Fuentes and right-hander Kerry Wood before those pitchers signed with the Angels and Indians, respectively. Hoffman, after post-2007 season surgery to clean up his right elbow, rebounded in 2008 to convert 30 of 34 save chances for a Padres team that lost 99 games and finished dead last in the National League West.

"When we talked, he gave his analysis of the Brewers," Macha said. "He said, 'Great offense, a lot of young players and a chance to compete again for a division crown.' Things like that are attractive to him. I can't be the judge of whether the scale is tilted toward pitching in California or just winning, period. I can't give you the complete reading on that. But it is appealing to him that we are a good, young team and we are going to compete."

My Take

This is a great move for Milwaukee. Not having a proven closer for 2009 would've hurt the Brewers' chances at making it back to the postseason. Hoffman is definitely capable of leading the Crew for next season.

Now the Brewers need to sign another reliever or two, and hopefully they'll be able to pry Ben Sheets off of the free agent market.

Both will be starters for the NFC squad.

Wide receiver Greg Jennings was named a first alternate.

For Collins, this marks his first career Pro Bowl selection. The fourth-year pro is tied for the lead in the NFC with five interceptions and ranks first among all NFL players with three interception returns for scores and 230 interception return yards. Collins ranks second on the team with 93 tackles and third in passes defensed with 11.

Woodson earns his fifth career Pro Bowl selection and first with Green Bay. He also is tied for the NFC lead with five interceptions, two of which he has returned for touchdowns. This season, he has established a career high with three sacks and ranks fourth on the team in tackles (72) and leads the club with 17 passes defensed. The 11th-year pro is making his first trip to the Pro Bowl since 2001.

The Packers last had two members of the secondary earn Pro Bowl honors in 1974, when cornerbacks Willie Buchanon and Ken Ellis were selected.

Other alternates include cornerback Al Harris and defensive end Aaron Kampman.

My Take

It's great to see the Packers get the recognition they deserve, despite their lopsided record. It's a shame that Aaron Rodgers didn't get selected as an alternate as well, but five sure is fine.

Milwaukee Brewers Sign Outfielders Trot Nixon and Chris Duffy

(courtesy Brewers.com)

The Brewers made a pair of signings today, as they brought in veteran outfielder Trot Nixon and former Pirates prospect Chris Duffy.

The team, on Thursday, announced it had come to terms with the 34-year-old Nixon, who agreed to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training. He will get an opportunity to win a spot on the bench for the Brewers, who are in need of left-handed bats.

"When I talked to Trot a couple of days ago, I told him I hope he is next year's Gabe Kapler," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "He's a guy that still wants to play, still has that great work ethic. We think he's worth a shot. On a Minor League contract, it's a low-risk situation."

Nixon's best years were in Boston from 2001-03, when he averaged 26 home runs and 90 RBIs. But he appeared in only 11 games in the Majors last season with the Mets, batting .171 (6-for-35) before going on the disabled list with a groin injury. Nixon did have Minor League success last season, batting .306 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs for the Diamondbacks' and Mets' Triple-A affiliates. Arizona traded him to New York for cash before an "out clause" kicked in that would have made Nixon a free agent.

The Brewers would love to see a resurgence from Nixon similar to the one enjoyed last season by Gabe Kapler, a Boston teammate from 2003-06. Kapler was a Minor League manager in 2007, but played a key role for the '08 Brewers before a shoulder injury ended his season. He batted .301 in 96 games.

Kapler is now a free agent. The team has instead been searching for ways to infuse left-handed bats, especially since talks between the Brewers and Yankees involving switch-hitter Melky Cabrera have broken down.

"Trot is down in Florida at a baseball facility, working hard," Melvin said. "He's adjusted to being a part-time player, and we think he could be a good, veteran guy for our ballclub."

Nixon was one of two outfielders who agreed to terms on a Minor League contract Thursday. The other was former Pirates' prospect Chris Duffy, who also received an invitation to big league camp.

Duffy is a .269 hitter in parts of three big league seasons with the Pirates, but he split last season between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis while recovering from an August 2007 surgery on his left shoulder. Duffy, like Tony Gwynn Jr., who is on the 40-man roster and will also be competing for a backup outfield spot, is primarily a center fielder.

Nixon and Duffy make it nine non-roster players to get Spring Training invitations from the Brewers. The others are pitchers Joe Bateman, Chris Capuano, Lindsay Gulin, Sam Narron and Chris Narveson, first baseman Scott Thorman and outfielder Jason Bourgeois.

My Take

This is another great move by the Brewers, as they bring in a guy with plenty of major league experience and success. I can definitely see Nixon being this year's Gabe Kapler, except with even more opportunities, due to the fact that Nixon hits left-handed.

I don't see why Milwaukee has such little interest in Kapler. He was our best option off the bench last season, and could even step in and make a start every once in a while. Hopefully the Brewers' front office will realize the mistake they'd be making if they don't decide to re-sign Kapler.

While I don't have much knowledge about Duffy, other than that he was mainly a minor league center fielder in the Pirates organization, I can't see why he wouldn't be a decent addition to our team in Nashville.

Chris Capuano, Milwaukee Brewers Agree to Minor League Deal

(courtesy Brewers.com)

Chris Capuano will be staying with the Milwaukee Brewers. He agreed to a minor league contract Tuesday after the team let him go last week.

The left-hander became a free agent when Milwaukee failed to offer a contract by Friday's arbitration deadline, which took him off the 40-man roster.

Capuano missed last season after injuring his pitching elbow in an exhibition game in March. The 30-year-old decided to try rehabilitation, but later had the second elbow-ligament replacement surgery of his career and never returned to play.

Capuano won 18 games in 2005 and made the NL All-Star team in 2006. He started 5-0 in 2007, but lost his last 12 decisions.

He would get a $500,000, one-year contract if added to the major league roster and could make $2,825,000 in performance bonuses: $1.2 million based on innings from 60 to 200 and $1,625,000 based on starts from five to 30.

Capuano had a $3.75 million salary last season.

My Take

I think this could be a crucial move for the Crew, seeing as Capuano is currently one of the most experienced starting pitchers the Brewers have. I can see him being a key part of the starting rotation next season.

I'd still like to see Milwaukee go after one or two starters, focusing mainly on Oliver Perez and Jon Garland. Rumors have been spread that veteran John Smoltz is interested in joining the Brewers, as well.

Brewers re-sign infielder Lamb; RP Coffey

(parts of story courtesy MLB.com and ESPN.com)

The Milwaukee Brewers made a pair of re-signing's these past couple days, keeping infielder Mike Lamb and relief pitcher Todd Coffey.

Lamb, 33, finished the 2007 regular season with Milwaukee after he was released by the Twins five months into a two-year, $6.6 million contract. The Brewers are believed to have committed something close to the league minimum of $400,000 for Lamb, and the Twins will be on the hook for the rest of the $3 million they guaranteed him for 2009.

The Brewers are seeking left-handed bats this offseason and they liked what they had in Lamb, who hit .273 (3-for-11) in 11 games with the Brewers. He was not eligible for the postseason roster because Milwaukee didn't acquire him until Sept. 5.

He's likely to platoon at third base with Bill Hall in 2009. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Monday that prospect Mat Gamel—another left-handed hitter—will also get a chance to win playing time.

Lamb is a .277 hitter in parts of nine seasons with the Rangers, Astros, Twins, and Brewers. His best years were in Houston, where he had a 14-homer, 58 RBI 2004 season and a career-high .307 batting average in 2006.

Coffey, 28 and a right-hander, was excellent after the Brewers claimed him off waivers on Sept. 10 to bolster the bullpen for the final three weeks of the regular season. He worked nine scoreless appearances—spanning 7 1/3 innings—and then traveled with the Brewers throughout the National League Division Series, even though he also wasn't eligible for the postseason roster.

He finished the season 1-0 with a 4.39 earned run average in a combined 26 games with Milwaukee and Cincinnati.

Coffey will earn an $800,000 base salary next season, plus a $200,000 bonus if he makes 70 appearances. Coffey reached that threshold once, in 2006, when he pitched in 81 games for the Reds.

"It was a real easy decision because I want to be a Brewer," Coffey said. "They believed in me last year. This is a good deal."

In parts of four Major League seasons, Coffey has a 4.46 ERA in 222 relief appearances. He won't be a free agent until after the 2011 season.

My Take

A Lamb-Hall platoon might work out until Gamel is ready to play a significant amount of time for the Crew. It probably won't be pretty, but it's a much cheaper solution. The free agent pool of third basemen is quite thin, so the Brewers will either need to deal with what they have, or make a trade to solidify their infield.

Coffey, as well as recently signed Jorge Julio, could end up playing a significant role in a rebuilt Brewers bullpen. Salomon Torres has retired, and Eric Gagne, Guillermo Mota, and Brian Shouse are free agents, leaving many of Milwaukee's late-inning roles up for grabs. I'm still hoping for the Brewers to make more moves to bolster the bullpen—a very weak spot for the team, right now.

Mike Cameron will be back in center field at Miller Park in 2009.

Facing a Monday deadline for their decision, the Brewers exercised a $10 million option to bring Cameron back for a second season in Milwaukee.

The team could have bought out the option for $750,000 and made Cameron a free agent, however, declined to do so, possibly due to the lack of talent in free agency at his position.

Cameron, a top-flight defensive player who turns 36 in January, missed the first 25 games of 2008 on a league-imposed suspension, then batted .243 with 25 home runs and 70 RBIs in 120 games. He also struck out 142 times, most on the team.

With Cameron's option exercised and infielder Craig Counsell's declined, the Brewers have one club option left on the table. Closer Salomon Torres, who made a staff-high 71 appearances and notched 26 saves, has a $3.75 million option for next season with a $300,000 buyout. The team has a Nov. 15 deadline to decide on Torres.

My Take:

I personally think that this was a key move. Sure, $10 million is a LOT of money, especially for a 36-year old who strikes out a lot, and hits for a low average.

However, it's important that he was resigned because the Brewers don't have any up-and-coming OF prospects, nor would they have had a wide variety of quality talent through free agency. Cameron was clearly the best option available to the team.

For those who still think this is a bad deal, then you might be able to get your hopes up —Gothe Yankees are reportedly interested in Cameron. Could this possibly be a sign-and-trade deal? We'll find out within the next month, or so.

Milwaukee Bucks Waive Adrian Griffin, Claim Austin Croshere

The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired forward Austin Croshere off of waivers, general manager John Hammond announced today. In a subsequent move, the team requested waivers on forward Adrian Griffin.

Croshere (6-10, 235) comes to the Bucks with 11 years of NBA experience. He spent his first nine seasons with the Indiana Pacers, the team that drafted him with the 12th overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft.

He followed up his Pacers career with one-year stints in Dallas (2006-07) and Golden State (2007-08). He averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 44 games with the Warriors last season.

He comes to Milwaukee with 645 regular season games to his credit and career averages of 6.9 points and 4.1 rebounds.

The 33-year old has also appeared in 68 playoff games and owns postseason averages of 6.7 points and 3.6 rebounds.

Milwaukee Brewers Team Update at MLB Trade Deadline

The Brewers are heading into the Trade Deadline at second in the NL Central, and first in the NL Wild Card. They've been playing postseason type baseball as of late (minus this current home stand), and are giving Brewers fans something to look forward to in the second half for the second straight year.

But some fans are still on the fence and are questioning whether or not the Brewers are good enough for a run to the playoffs. Here's what I think.

Question One: Who has the better schedule down the stretch, the Brewers or the Cubs?

Answer: Brewers. The Cubs have a tough schedule during the last two months, with a lot of those games coming on the road. The Brewers have a very favorable schedule coming up in August, as the majority of their games are against teams under .500. While most of them are on the road, they have only two series against teams .500 or better (Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals—both on the road).

Question Two: How will the bullpen hold up?

Answer: The bullpen is full of veterans, but not many have playoff experience. I'm sure a few of them can handle the next two (hopefully three) months, but I'm sure everyone would feel a lot safer if we traded for a decent arm to throw in there as well. For more on that, see question four.

Question Three: Will Eric Gagne be put back into the closers' role?

Answer: The bullpen hasn't been too bad as of late, and yes, Salomon Torres has been a bit shaky since Gagne has come back, but not bad enough to give the ball back to him in the ninth. I'm not sure he can handle the pressure. He looks perfect for the current set-up role he's in now, and hasn't done too bad, so, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Question Four: Will the Brewers make another move to acquire either another starter or reliever?

Answer: Everyone would be thrilled if the Brewers could trade for an arm in the 'pen, such as Huston Street or Brian Fuentes, but it'd probably take another couple of our top prospects.

Question Five: Will the Brewers trade guys who are struggling like Weeks, Hall, Cameron, Mota, Suppan, etc.?

Answer: A lot of us are getting a bit frustrated with the play of Rickie Weeks lately, but I can't see him being moved. If he does, it'll be to Nashville, our AAA team. We sent him down last year, too, and when he came back up, he started performing well, again. If they plan on moving him, it should be soon, as they don't want him to miss that much time.

Another hole we have is at 3B, but Bill Hall has been OK as of late. Also, the back of our rotation has become killer. Jeff Suppan is not performing well, but we can't move him, so we're stuck. We have three solid SPs in Ben Sheets, CC Sabathia, and Manny Parra, and Dave Bush has been pitching pretty lights out lately, too.

There are only two SPs that are rumored to be heading elsewhere, and they are: Greg Maddux (who wants to stay on the West Coast) and Jarrod Washburn (who is probably headed to the Yankees).

Also, the Brewers won't be trading any of those guys, I can assure you, as most teams probably won't have any interest, and because it's not good to trade players while they're struggling. Teams who do have some interest won't be willing to give up quality talent in return.

If you're set on trading a player, or if the player wants out, it's key to trade them when they're at the top of their game. Nobody's going to want someone who's washed up, or just flat out not having a good season, because chances are they aren't going to change once they've been dealt.

So, that's about it for now. It certainly will be interesting to see what happens the rest of today and tomorrow.

Ray Durham Traded to the Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers have made another move, acquiring 2B Ray Durham from the San Francisco Giants. The trade was announced today, immediately after the game between the two teams. The Giants received two prospects in the deal: OF Darren Ford from Class A Brevard County and Triple-A Nashville LHP Steve Hammond.

Ford was pulled from the Brevard County line-up Saturday in anticipation of the trade and is hitting .230 this year, but had 48 stolen bases in 59 attempts. The Brewers selected him in the 18th round of the 2004 Draft.

Hammond is a soft-tosser who started the season at AA Huntsville and has struggled since a promotion to AAA. He is 0-4 with a 7.41 ERA in four starts since the move and 7-8 with a 4.09 ERA in 19 starts combined.

Durham, 36, is a switch-hitter and is hitting .293 this season with a .385 on-base percentage and could be worked into a second-base platoon with Rickie Weeks, who hit a go-ahead two-run single in Saturday's win for the Brewers, but is batting .218 with a .322 on-base percentage. Durham could also be used as a UTIL player and might see some action at 3B. Of course, he also will be available to come off the bench to pinch-hit and pinch-run.

Durham is the final season of a two-year, $14.5 million contract that will pay roughly $3 million for the remainder of 2008. He did not play in the weekend series against the Brewers at AT&T Park. The Giants said he had the flu.

Andrew Bogut Signs an Extension with Milwaukee Bucks

(courtesy Bucks.com)

The Bucks have signed center Andrew Bogut (7-0, 260) to a multi-year contract extension today. Entering his fourth NBA season, Bogut has averaged 11.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 blocked shot in 226 career games.

"Andrew has worked very hard to develop into one of the top young centers in the league," said Hammond." He is a very important part of what we are doing in Milwaukee and we're excited to announce his contract extension."

Bogut, 23, enjoyed a breakout season for the Bucks last year, posting career-high averages of 14.3 points, 9.8 rebounds (T-11th in NBA), and 1.7 blocks (9th in NBA) in 34.9 minutes per game. He scored double-digits in 63 games and grabbed ten or more rebounds in 39 games. His 38 double-doubles were tops on the club and ranked 12th best in the NBA. Bogut had 40 games with multiple blocked shots, including 14 games with four or more blocks. He also led the Bucks by playing in 78 games (78 starts).

My Take

Bogut certainly deserved this extension after his breakout year last season. While he wasn't spectacular, he showed a lot of potential. He played very consistently last season, and should be very fun to watch this upcoming season.

Ben Sheets Named All-Star Starter for the National League

Brewers starting pitcher Ben Sheets has been named the NL All-Star starter, by NL and Rockies' manager Clint Hurdle.

Milwaukee's right hander is 10-3 with a 2.85 ERA and ranks in the Top 10 in the National League in wins, ERA, strikeouts, WHIP (walks plus hits/innings pitched), and strikeout/walk ratio among other categories. He has made 18 starts already, this year, which has all Brewer fans happy, due to his past three seasons being limited from injuries.

He has clearly been the Brewers' horse this year, and now with the arrival of CC Sabathia, the pressure has been taken off him a bit. Other starters taken into consideration were the Diamondbacks' Brandon Webb, the Giants' Tim Lincecum, and the Reds' Edinson Volquez.

"He brings his lunch pail to work every day, he takes the ball, he's no-nonsense, blue collar, I like everything about him, I've liked him for a long time. It was the perfect match for me."

--NL All-Stars' Manager Clint Hurdle on NL All-Stars' and Brewers' SP Ben Sheets

Milwaukee Brewers: Jeff Suppan placed on 15-day DL

The Brewers have placed SP Jeff Suppan on the 15-day DL, with joint irritation in his right elbow, an injury he suffered more than five weeks ago in Washington while batting.

The move comes after the Brewers acquired last year's AL Cy Young, CC Sabathia, who, if you hadn't noticed already, has decided to drop the punctuation in his name to make it just CC, instead of C.C.

Suppan said he pitched through the irritation because it never hurt when he would deliver a pitch. The elbow only hurt when he would do random things like reach for his steering wheel or if he slept on it wrong.

However, during his start Sunday, Suppan felt some pain while he warmed up between innings. There is no structural damage to the elbow and the team figures rest is the best option, at least for now.

My Take

- Had the All-Star break not been near, Suppan likely would have just skipped a start and been back in the rotation. If he went on the DL anyway, he could have missed three starts.

But because the break starts Monday and a roster spot was needed for Sabathia, Suppan can go on the DL and still only miss one start, assuming he’s ready to be back in the rotation once his 15 days are up.

- It’s a good time for it because Suppan hasn’t been good over the last month. For June, he was 1-2 with a 4.33 earned-run average, and in two starts this month, he has allowed 11 earned runs in eight innings.

- Suppan’s injury means Yost still has plenty of time to decide who comes out of the rotation once everyone is healthy.

The best candidates are Dave Bush and Seth McClung, although both have had some strong outings during the last month. A possibility could be the idea of piggybacking starters so that either Bush or McClung starts and pitches a certain number of innings, followed by the other guy coming in to finish the game.

Another thought could be to start McClung on the road and Bush at Miller Park, because Bush has been horrible away from home. On the road, Bush is 1-6 with a 6.95 earned-run average, while at home he is 3-2 with a 2.87 ERA.

A third possibility could be starting a guy based on matchups. He does not want to put one of them in long relief and have him lose the endurance he’s built up as a starter.

Brewers activate RP Gagne

(courtesy JSOnline.com)

The Brewers have activated RP Eric Gagne from the 15-day DL, and RP Mark DiFelice was sent to Class AAA Nashville to make room on the roster.

Gagné was evaluated after he threw Saturday and again Sunday to see if there were any unexpected complications or pain. He was fine, as he said he had been after two rehabilitation assignments last week with Nashville. As expected, he was activated for the series opener today against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“It’s just good to get back on the mound,” Gagné said. “I’m ready to rock and roll.”

Gagné’s role in the bullpen could be determined by matchups, but what is certain is that he will no longer be the closer. Salomon Torres won that job in Gagné’s absence.

As the closer to begin the season, Gagné struggled. He blew five saves, converted 10 and went on the DL with a 1-2 record and 6.98 earned run average. He has not thrown a scoreless inning in his last 13.

In a non-closing role last season in Boston, Gagné struggled and went 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA, and he was scored on in five of his first seven outings and in 11 of his last 13 in the regular season with the Red Sox. He wasn’t any better in the role during the playoffs, giving up three earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

But that wasn’t a major concern for the Brewers when they signed Gagné in the off-season. Manager Ned Yost said his struggles stemmed from his unfamiliar role in Boston, setting up closer Jonathan Papelbon, and that they wouldn’t be a concern in Milwaukee because Gagné would be closing.

So what will be different this year, when Gagné might be used in any inning from the fifth to the eighth?

“Because he’s got more experience with it now,” Yost said. “He’s went through it before. He understands the ramifications of it. He’ll be in good shape.”

In DiFelice’s first call-up to the big leagues, he pitched 13 2/3 innings and allowed 13 hits and six runs (3.95 ERA). The team wants him to work on his changeup and breaking ball to left-handed hitters, and they’ll allow him to start in Nashville.

For DiFelice, it was more of a numbers issue than one of poor performance.
“I obviously knew Gagné had to come off and there had to be a roster move somewhere,” DiFelice said. “It was the logical decision."

My Take

I just hope Gagne will shake out the cobwebs, and actually perform well for us. I certainly hope we didn't completely waste $10,000,000. I'd hate to see our worst nightmare reappear right before our eyes, when we're in the race for a playoff spot.
