Tyler Hansbrough or Tim Tebow: Who Will Make the Better Pro?

Both reign at the top of their respective collegiate sports, where only their overwhelming popularity outweighs their skill upon the hardcourt and turf.

Tyler Hansbrough is the do-everything forward for possibly the most popular college basketball team in the country. Tim Tebow plays the role of Superman for one of college football's most dominant teams of the last decade.

Hansbrough is applauded for his toughness as he snatches rebounds from those who tower over him, and as he takes ping pong shots to the chest from players he creates a shadow over.

Tebow has gained notoriety for his ability to trample over tentative defenders and for his exceptional character (Front-Runner for Most Beaten to Death College Football Story of the Year).

However, it remains unclear whether either of them will transform into an elite professional after making the collegiate competition their playground.

Hansbrough has drawn comparisons to Mark Madsen. It's not exactly high praise for a Wooden Award Winner to be compared to an NBA journeyman known mostly for his awkward championship celebration.

I think Hansbrough will be better than Madsen, but he won't be able to have nearly the same influence on the professional game as he did on the college game. Hansbrough won't be able to out-muscle big men like he now does in the ACC and will struggle to find scoring opportunities as easily as he does now.

I think the most favorable comparison for Hansbrough could be Charles Oakley, as he plays the consummate third banana his entire career (Oakley's career stats: 9.7 ppg, 9.5 rpg).

I don't think Tyler Hansbrough will be a star in the NBA, but he does have a legitimate chance to be a distinguished role player on solid playoff teams. His hustle and tenacity will be a huge plus for any team, but they will only take his NBA career so far.

As for Tebow, his numbers appear to stack up a lot better for the NFL. Tebow had a 67 percent completion rating last year for the Gators.

Yet much of Tebow's effectiveness depends on his ability to run the football. In the NFL, everyone is able to chase down quarterbacks on defense and can bottle up even the fleetest of quarterbacks.

Tebow also isn't amazingly fast. He was clocked last year at 4.52, which isn't bad—but that is close to Vernon Gholston's average 40 time of 4.65, even though Gholston was also clocked at 4.50.

The point is, NFL players are faster across the board and won't allow Tebow to run wild around them.

Tebow also won't be able to play his bruising style in the NFL. He is 6'2", 238 pounds whereas Peyton Manning is 6'5 and 230 pounds. Yes, Peyton has three inches on him, but he isn't exactly a bruiser himself.

When you take a look at Tebow's passing numbers last season, there is reason to believe that he could struggle against NFL defenses.

These were his stats against arguably the three best defenses he faced: Auburn, LSU, and Georgia. He was 46-75 for a completion percentage of 61 percent with four TDs and two picks. Not terrible, but certainly not Heisman level.

I think Tebow can still develop and mold himself into an NFL-level quarterback. He will have to focus on enhancing his passing game and using his running ability only as a last resort.

He has the potential to put up better numbers than pre-prison Michael Vick if he is a past-first quarterback, rather than depending on the run, because that is where he can be most dangerous.

Final Verdict

Tim Tebow will be the better pro. I envision him as a solid starting quarterback and a borderline Pro Bowler. He may never be a superstar, but he could play at a respectable level for a number of years.

The Rules for Being a Sports Fan: What Every Good Fan Should Know

There have been certain things I've noticed as I've started attending more sporting events upon entering college.

Besides noticing that I'm an overenthusiastic heckler (come on who doesn't love a good heckle now and again?), I've also noticed that there is some proper etiquette that comes with being a fan.

On the court, playing field, and obviously the golf course, there is always proper etiquette to be adhered to, therefore the fans should be held to no lesser standard.

You may have paid good money for that seat, but you're letting everyone down, including yourself, if you fail to live up to a standard set of viewing rules.

That is why I'm here to set these rules in stone and also will keep adding on to them as I attend more and more events and experience all sorts of new and exciting feelings, like a sports puberty if you will.

I've always been a late bloomer.

1. If you show up late in the second quarter, after the fourth inning, or after the first period and someone is in your seat, too bad. Barring a 10-car pile-up or just rush hour traffic on your way to Dodgers stadium, arrangements should be made that you make it to the game at least close to on time.

If someone still tries to claim their seat, the person now sitting in it should point to the scoreboard, inform them of my rule and maybe give them a swift tap to the genital region. That should suffice as a fair punishment.

It may be a little extreme to get hit in your man bags for being late to a game, but you're collectively slapping your favorite team in the face by not showing up on time.

2. When the Noise meter appears on the Jumbotron, it must be defeated. No questions asked.

3. A fan must make at least one heckle a game in order to fully get their money's worth. Like I said before, everybody enjoys a good heckle, whether it's telling a player how unfavorable they think they are or how ugly their mother is.

Unless of course it's Dorothy Mantooth, you don't ridicule her because that woman is a saint.

*Style points awarded for creativity.

4. Unless it's an NHL game or an extended period of an MLB game, if the person in front of you is standing up, stand up as well. There is nothing wrong with rising to your feet to show support for your beloved team.

If the person in front of you is standing up longer than you take it as a challenge to your fanhood and reply with a standing match longer and more drawn out than the de la Hoya-Mayweather fight. It would probably have more hitting too.

5. Thunder sticks should always be used with caution. On a related note, always avoid Bat Day, and the not as commonly known Machete Night.

6. Never cheer when a player is hurt. You stand up and clap when he gets back up and walks off. It doesn't matter if it is your rival or an early season cupcake.

Also, absolutely no cheering if a horse is being euthanized at a horse race. The red paint will rain down upon you after that decision. However, sports fans may cheer everywhere when Roger Clemens is euthanized.

7. Opposing teams' fans should be welcomed outside the arena at tailgates, pre-game get-togethers, etc. But once you enter the arena all bets are off. The opposing team's fans are open to ridicule and the guy you just shared wieners with...check that...hot dogs with is now forced to accept any insult you can throw his way.

*In rivalries all bets are off. You're rival is the scum of the Earth and you should let him know about it.

8. After scoring a touchdown, hitting a clutch home run, or making the go-ahead basket late in the game, you should proceed to slap everyone's hand.

Compare it to when you are in church and have to say peace. Just because the guy behind you looks a little creepy doesn't prevent you from wishing him peace.

The same applies to a sporting event, it is always high fives all around. The high five is the ultimate symbol of fandom and should be celebrated properly, even with the creepy guy behind you.

9. Any foul ball and/or stray puck is fair game for any fan above the age of six. It should not be considered an inconsiderate move but a rite of passage for a small child to have a ball stolen right from their grasps.

Too many kids can't deal with failure nowadays and if stealing a home run ball right from the tiny fingers is the only way to get the message across that whining will not be tolerated, than so be it.

10. In a perfect world anyone over the age of 14 who brings their glove to the stadium would get drilled in the head while they're ordering a lemon freeze.

Loose the glove and toughen up those hands. Moises Alou has some tips to get in top foul ball catching shape.

11. If you're sitting courtside at a basketball game you have to be prepared to catch a hometown player who goes diving into the stands.

If it's a player from the opposing side or Shaquille O'Neill, open a large gap for them to go plunging into or smack them with a metal chair WWE style.

12. Punch anyone in the kidney who stumbles over the fight song.

13. If you're going to start chanting someone's name you better have a damn good reason for it (see: Josh Hamilton home run derby).

If you have any other ideas don't be afraid to leave them in a comment. I hope to make continuous additions to this list.

Boston College Football: Eagles Look to Make Encore Presentation in 2008

Much will be made of Boston College attempting to replace Matt Ryan and the rest of the talented group of seniors that graduated after last year's stunning campaign.

The 2008 addition of the Eagles may not be as critically acclaimed, but they should keep the team competitive in a wide-open ACC.

Many people think the Eagles will struggle offensively with the loss of Matt Ryan, but I think Steve Logan still has a lot of offensive weapons to exploit for a strong spread attack.

All but one receiver return from last season, and top recruited tailback Josh Haden should be a big addition to the team. The running game is the weak link in the offense and will need to develop quickly for the Eagles to have a strong year.

The defense will be strong in the front seven with Brian Toal and B.J. Rajii added to the mix this season. Jamie Silva and DeJuan Tribble leave big holes to replace in the secondary.

Look for the Eagles to have a dominating run defense that should keep them in a lot of games.

I'm breaking the season down into three parts and examining each separately from the others.

Part One: Transition Period

@ Kent State - W

Georgia Tech - W

UCF - W

Rhode Island - W

Record: 4-0

With all the new position players, the Eagles will happy to find that the softest part of their schedule falls within the first four weeks of their season.

Kent State shouldn't be a problem for Boston College, as they were one of the worst teams in Division I-A football last year at just 3-9 overall.

The Yellow Jackets do not have a strong offensive attack and will be implementing a whole new system. They should be struggling in Week Two, and the Eagles should capitalize.

UCF doesn't have a very powerful offense and should have trouble in Chestnut Hill without All-Everything tailback Kevin Smith.

Rhode Island: Division I-AA opponent, Parents' Weekend—need I say more?

Part Two: When the Going Gets Tough

@ NC State - W

Virginia Tech - W

@ UNC - L

Clemson - L

Record: 6-2

O'Brien Bowl Part II makes its first appearance in North Carolina. O'Brien is trying to turn around a Wolfpack team that was near the basement in last year's ACC. The Eagles should prevail in this one and keep their season going.

I believe the Eagles will steal one game between their two games against VT and Clemson. I think Clemson's strong offensive attack will be too much for a weaker Eagles' secondary.

Virginia Tech is depleted on the offensive side of the ball and also lost Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi at the linebacker position. These two teams could end up starting a nice little rivalry, and another Boston College victory would go a long way towards that end.

The Tar Heels should be a very improved team this year, making it a tough visit for the Eagles in Chapel Hill. Two losses in a row will be tough for the Eagles, but at 6-2 at this point in the season, they would have to be enthused.

Part Three: Let's Go Bowling

Notre Dame - W

@ Florida State - W

@ Wake Forest - L

Maryland - W

Record: 9-3

The Holy War continues with Boston College taking down Notre Dame yet again. Notre Dame should be improved this year, but improving upon last year's campaign should be a pretty easy task.

The Eagles' weakest defensive unit is their secondary, but if they can pressure the quarterback and dominate the Irish's weak offensive line, the Eagles should escape with a win.

The Eagles should beat the Seminoles for their quality road win of the season. It will be a low-scoring affair, but I expect Steve Logan to craft an attack that uses the Seminoles' aggressiveness against them. The 'Noles broke up their dream season last year, and payback will be on the minds of all the Eagles players.

Wake Forest should have a strong team this year led by Riley Skinner at quarterback. Running back Josh Adams will provide a balanced attack that the Eagles just won't be able to handle.

The Eagles should finish up their season with a home win against Maryland. Maryland lost Keon Lattimore and Lance Ball, so their running attack should struggle to find legs this year. Look for the Eagles to dominate them defensively.

That leaves the Eagles at a very respectable 9-3 for the season, but it could easily be 8-4. That should land the Eagles in either the Champs Sports Bowl that they played in last year or something to the effect of the Emerald Bowl.

British Open: TV Execs Still Decide to Follow Tiger Woods

TNT and ABC were faced with a difficult problem when Tiger Woods became hurt after the US Open and was forced to take the rest of the year off. What would happen to their ratings for the British Open?

Every major tournament hinges its entire presentation on the presence of Tiger and will have a lot of gaps to fill without Woods present.

Viewers might get to see more than just Phil's blowups or long eagle shots from virtual unknowns this weekend at Royal Birkdale.

However, ABC executives have decided not to tamper with their time-tested majors’ formula. After all, a Tiger won't go ahead and change its stripes.

The network has decided that even though Tiger will not be competing, it doesn't mean he shouldn't be the center of attention at another major.

Cameras will be positioned throughout the house of Tiger Woods as he watches this year's British Open from the comfort of his own home. Tiger's wife and daughter are also expected to be on hand.

The ABC executives are excited for America to get a look at Tiger that they've never been afforded to before.

Now, viewers can watch Tiger munch on snacks, critique the games of other players, change his daughter's diaper, rehab his knee, and fall asleep after hour number two of coverage.

Tiger may not be competing this weekend but the American audience can still receive their Tiger fix.

MLB's All-Star Fiasco: It's Time To Change the Rules

For all the ridicule about Major League Baseball's All-Star Game being a popularity contest, 2008 will be remembered as a game decided by the Ugly Betty's of the league.

The final run was scored by Justin Morneau, as Kevin Youkilis sipped Red Bull. The final RBI was produced by Michael Young, as Derek Jeter posed for pictures on the top step of the dugout, and Carlos Guillen manned third base as Alex Rodriguez was halfway to Maddona's apartment.

The National League relied on the arm of Aaron Cook for three innings, as Edinson Volquez sat and watched.

Ultimately, the game was decided by the also-rans of the league. The starters accounted for less than 40 percent of the at-bats in the game, as players such as Joe Mauer were relegated to one at-bat, as Dioner Navarro received four at-bats.

Now, I'm not saying guys such as Cristian Guzman and Corey Hart shouldn't get their time, but when it gets down to the biggest spots, fans want to see their favorite players.

Fans don't come to Yankee games to see Wilson Betemit provide Derek Jeter with a night off. They want the captain in there every time.

For instance, last night, with the bases loaded and no one out for the American League, the trio of Grady Sizemore, Evan Longoria, and Justin Morneau failed to plate a single run. Wouldn't it have been more exciting if Josh Hamilton, Manny Ramirez, or Alex Rodriguez had been given the opportunity in that spot.

The most logical solution for this problem would be to allow position players to re-enter the game after the regular nine innings, in order to provide some late-game drama.

The fans voted to see the starters in the game. It's only a given they'd rather be seeing them in the most crucial part of the game.

Those who define themselves as "baseball purists" will completely reject this notion because it would compromise the rules of the game. However, the game is already played in a little-league style that lets everyone play, and Major League Baseball already allows an exhibition game to decide home-field advantage in the World Series.

Major League Baseball's decisions are propelled by possible revenue because why else would every team get a representative, even if they don't deserve one, or would Bud Selig grant home-field advantage to the winning league if he wasn't just after increased television ratings.

By allowing the stars to come back out in extra innings, it may convince some people to remain tuned into the game, rather than just turning it off because they are tired and have been stretched thin by an already listless game.

Until a change like this takes place, keep expecting to see the All-Star Game decided by the Michael Youngs of the world, six innings after it should have been completed.

Yankee Stadium: The House that Built The Asterik

It's the most feared object in all of baseball. More feared than a Mariano Rivera heater or a David Ortiz plate appearance late in a tied ballgame. That gut wrenching phenomenon is known as the asterisk.

The asterisk has transformed into the scarlet letter of Major League Baseball ever since Roger Maris' home run record was branded with the unsightly symbol. The steroids era has given the asterisk new life and stigmatized it even more.

However, last night a new asterik was handed out in Yankee Stadium to a man who doesn't use performance enhancers and instead, until recently, used performance-destroyers.

Last night Josh Hamilton crushed 28 home runs in a first round Home Run Derby display that would have impressed even the ghost of the Bambino. As ball after ball sailed through the night sky (13 in a row at one point) everyone in the hallowed grounds of Yankee Stadium watched in utter amazement.

You could feel the emotion swarming around Hamilton, as everyone forgot about the competition itself and let themselves fall under the spell that only 28 tape measure home runs can create.

Yet Hamilton's performance will always come with a disclaimer; a "yeah, but" statement that tarnishes even the most impressive of performances. Every time some analyst speaks in awe of Hamilton's run at the Derby, their story will always end with the fact that Hamilton was unable to capture the crown.

Despite Hamilton's inability to close out the competition, he provided another great memory in the historic reels of Yankee Stadium lore. No one will be remembering Justin Morneau's title in 20 years, but they will recall in detail every one of Hamilton's bombs.

Even if Hamilton's 28 Home Run Derby homers and Roger Maris' 61 home runs will always be remembered with an asterisk next to their deeds, they were standout moments in a historic stadium that is chock full of once in a lifetime memories.

In the end it's not about the numbers, but the moments that went towards those records and created a mysticism for the fabled Gotham Colosseum.

Getting Academic: The Majors of 2008 Heisman Trophy Candidates

As much as we tend to forget when we're living and breathing football on fall Saturdays, those participating in the games are supposed to be hitting the books rather than the opposition the other six days of the week.

Although the NCAA would try to convince you otherwise, the scholar that precedes athlete is almost nonexistent in the minds of collegiate sports fans everywhere.

Here's a look at the majors of some of the Heisman hopefuls this year as their true career aspirations become revealed.

Tim Tebow, QB, University of Florida

Major: Family, Youth and Community Sciences

When Tim Tebow isn't winning Heisman trophies and saving orphaned kittens from burning buildings, he takes up classes in the major called family, youth, and community sciences. The major seems to lend itself to Tebow's other passion (not what you're thinking LSU fans): community service.

Tebow was also an Academic All-American last year with a 3.77 GPA. Tebow seems to be a rare-breed of scholar athlete which serves to make him even more reviled in the SEC.

Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech University

Major: Undeclared

Translation: Michael Crabtree is leaving school after this year. Any athlete who doesn't have the time or energy to scribble down a Physical Education or Communications major, obviously is high-tailing it out of there as soon as their eligibility is up.

While I couldn't obtain Crabtree's GPA, his 14.6 yards-per-catch average makes that number pretty much meaningless.

Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State University

Major: Unknown

I scoured the Internet for a good fifteen minutes trying to find Wells' major at The Ohio State University. When not being able to procure it, I just figured he majored in football just like all the other Buckeyes. Hopefully he doesn't have the same academic adviser as Maurice Clarett.

Chase Daniel, QB, University of Missouri

Major: Business

Chase Daniel likes to concentrate on finance which will be helpful when he leaves Missouri and inks a lucrative pro contract. He was an All-Academic First-Team Big 12 Athlete last year, but that's a list about as prestigious as winning a Kids' Choice Award.

Knowshon Moreno, RB, University of Georgia

Major: Consumer Economics

People may see economics may think of challenging graphs and market trends, but this major basically shows you how to buy stuff.

Hopefully Moreno's classes are schooling him on the best rims, sound systems, gadgets and cars to purchase when he bolts for the NFL after this year.

Pat White, QB, West Virginia University

Major: Athletic Coaching Education

Here we go, the obligatory jock major. I'm not sure what athletic coaching education classes entail, but I'm thinking they involve a lot of football practice and video games in the dorm room.

Your Move Mr. Walsh: Knicks Offseason Plan

So far this offseason the Knicks have ushered in the Danilo Gallinari era and signed former Dukie Chris Duhon to a two-year contract. Not exactly jaw-dropping moves, but it's really exactly what the Knicks need.

For the past half decade the Knicks have tried to make impact deal after impact deal. Yet, each move proved to be less successful than the Love Guru, and sent the franchise into an even faster tailspin.

The Knicks should keep up the pace toward making modest roster moves that allow them to go for the grand-daddy of them all in the 2010 off-season. That's the best the Knicks can do for right now: just weather the storm.

With the Celtics coming off an NBA championship, the 76ers inking Elton Brand, and the Nets posturing toward the 2010 offseason as well, the Knicks need to start putting Donnie Walsh's plan into motion.

Here are two proposed trades that are not only logical for both sides but are approved by ESPN's always reliable trade machine.

Trade One

New York Knicks send Zach Randolph to the L.A. Clippers for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas

You've got to believe the Knicks are trying desperately to shop Zach Randolph, which is easier said than done considering his contract is the only thing that dwarfs his bra size.

The aging Mobley and Tim Thomas would be expendable for the Clippers in order to revitalize their lineup. By moving the two of them it would open up more playing time for Eric Gordon and Al Thornton.

The trade would leave the Clippers with a starting five of Baron Davis-Eric Gordon-Al Thornton-Zach Randolph-Chris Kaman with DeAndre Jordan and any potential free agent they sign this summer coming off the bench. If the young guys are able to contribute they could compete for a playoff spot with that lineup.

The Knicks would have successfully gotten rid of Randolph's contract and bad attitude, while also adding two guys who fit into D'Antoni's system.

Although they already have a plethora of aging swingmen, Mobley would provide a talented lefty jump-shooter and Thomas's best days of his career were spent with D'Antoni in Phoenix.

Trade Two

Knicks send David Lee and Nate Robinson to Charlotte for Raymond Felton

The Bobcats selection of D.J. Augustin seems to send a message that Felton is on the block. Although the Knicks just signed Chris Duhon, he is more a suitable backup then the answer at point guard.

Felton has the quickness to run a fast-paced offense and plays unselfishly, averaging 7.4 assists per game last year. Felton's contract expires at the end of this season, so if he doesn't live up to the billing the Knicks could simply let him walk.

David Lee is in line for an extension and it seems as if Walsh would rather deal him than tie up a lot of money into an "energy" guy. Nate Robinson's departure would also drop the Knicks locker room level of craziness from "Unhealthy" to "Ludicrous."

The trade would also signfy the end to the Stephon Marbury era as the Knicks could just cut him loose and let him head for greener pastures in Italy.

These two trades would give the Knicks a nucleus of Felton-Crawford-Gallinari-Thomas-Curry with Mobley, Duhon, Balkman, Jeffries and Richardson all available off the bench.

By all means they are not a title contender, but could possibly challenge for the 8th playoff spot in a softer East. The reinvention of the Knicks will take time, but a couple trades like these and the future could look just a tad brighter.

Just think if Walsh was able to pull this off the only players that would still be under contract in 2010 would be Crawford, Jeffries and Gallinari. If Felton was re-signed and a couple other pieces were put into place, the platter might be more enticing than what they have to offer in New Jersey/Brooklyn.

The Ultimate NFL Salary Cap Team

Cnnsi.com recently established a feature where Bucky Brooks and Mike Lombardi assembled two teams where they could select any player in the NFL. The lone caveat was that they had to stay under the salary cap and couldn't duplicate players.

I found this to be a really cool idea and immediately started brainstorming a team of my own. The salary cap for this upcoming season is estimated at near $115 million. The result: a team that not even a rigged Madden draft could duplicate.

My head coach would be Tony Dungy because with all the potential egos and personalities coming in, the even-keeled Dungy would be the perfect equilibrium. Hot-shot Jason Garrett will man the offense as Frank Spaziani implements his hard rushing schemes into my defense.

Total Salary

$113,282,436.00

Quarterback

Quarterback is the most important position in the NFL and I shelled out big bucks in order to have the best in Tom Brady lead my huddle. Trent Edwards will be a ready backup for a very reasonable price while Brady helps groom Matt Ryan into his potential replacement.

Running Back

My team is no different than any other as I plan on using the running back by committee. I would spell superstar Adrian Peterson with Joseph Addai in order to keep both of them healthy. They are also both great pass-catchers that will live off check-downs from Brady.

Bradshaw provides depth as Michael Robinson is our special teams go-to-guy. Tony Richardson will lead the way at fullback as he's done for so many great running backs.

Wide Receiver

I couldn't break up the Brady to Moss connection especially when Moss comes at only about $6 million a year. I paired him along side Marques Colston whose salary was just as enticing as his size.

Wes Welker provided Brady with his ultimate slot option and rising star Brandan Marshall provides depth. Devin Hester is the game-breaking return man that every fantasy team needs.

Tight End

Jason Witten knows how to control his body and create space. He would easily become Brady's favorite red zone target with his ability to catch in traffic. Heath Miller makes a very economical second tight end choice that could cause a handful of match-up problems. Kevin Boss is here merely just for depth.

Offensive Line

The big hogs are anchored by one of the biggest of the hogs, Flozell Adams, at tackle. The fast developing Jason Peters provides the other bookend. Logan Mankins brings his tough demeanor to play guard along with Ryan Lilja who is powerful as well as cheap. Dan Koppen will represent Boston College at center and hopefully bring a full beard to the table as well.

Jamaal Brown and Matt Light will help keep Adams and Peters fresh on the line as Chris Snee, Mangold, and Vincent offer versatility as backups.

Defensive End

The Giants showed in the Super Bowl that a bevy of pass rushing defensive ends can help contain even the most potent of offenses. Osi Umenyiora and Patrick Kerney provide prototypical pass-rushing skills that will help dominate the line. Justin Tuck and Elvis Dumervil are two very cost-friendly rotation guys.

Defensive Tackle

Haloti Ngata and Vince Wilfork are perfect run stuffers whose work at the buffet line will pay dividends in slowing down the run. If they can clog the middle it will allow the ends to run wild on the outside. Tommie Harris can also pressure the quarterback from the tackle position.

Linebacker

Patrick Willis is just a tackling machine and may develop into best linebacker since Joe Montanya. Ernie Sims may be able to write a check for 100 tackles over the next eight seasons and plays hard on every down. DeMarcus Ware is the edge rusher of the core who should be aloud to roam with the rest of the talent on defense.

Beason, Harrison, Ryans, and Merriman could all easily start but will be great additions for various situations. Merriman could help spell Ware and keep the two fresh while Harrison should come in on long yardage to help provide coverage.

Cornerback

Antonio Cromartie and Terrence Newman could change the game instantly with one single interception. Cortland Finnegan has great potential and a bargain basement salary. Cedrick Griffin and Richard Marshall are strictly situational players.

Safeties

Reggie Nelson is a special talent who can cover a lot of ground on the field. Sean Jones can come up and make hits or ball-hawk from his safety position. Bethea and Atari Bigby offer great compliments at ridiculously low prices.

Kicker and Punter

Nick Folk has incredible power behind his kicks and comes for a kicker worthy salary. Andy Lee had a 40-yard net punting average last season but hopefully won't be used much with our offense.

Blast From the Past: Top Former Athletes Who Would Still Thrive Today

It's a time honored tradition in sports to compare our heroes of today to heroes past. Often times our memories fade quickly and the newest flash in the pan immediately becomes the greatest to ever play the game.

However, there are MANY former athletes who dominated their sports at one time and would only be better in today's formats. We usually feel that today's athletes are stronger, faster, and athletically superior to the competitors of yesteryear, but a lot of that could be attributed to HD televisions and revisionist sports history.

Here are two athletes who would not only thrive in today's sport scene, but possibly even be better in their respective domains.

"Pistol" Pete Maravich

It's a shame the lack of credit this man receives from sports historians and fans alike. The Pistol was showtime before showtime even existed; he was a magician more talented than Houdini (or Poohdini, for that matter).

Many of today's best ballhandlers model their games after Pistol Pete, and his incredible ballhandling talents still are mostly unmatched. There is a tendency to make him more myth than legend because his skills were so spectacular.

For instance, he could make half-court shots on the bounce, bank shots in off his head, throw full-court behind the back passes and handle the ball as if gravity was a non-factor.

Statistically, the Pistol was an absolute freak, averaging 44.2 points a game as a collegiate and 24.2 ppg as a professional; all without the three-point line! The tough part is translating that amount over with a three point line.

Conventional wisdom would suggest that Maravich would have conservatively averaged 50 points a game during his college career and probably closer to 30 a game in the pros. Some may argue that his three-point shot would be defended more if there was a line, but that would only provide more opportunities for Maravich to attack the basket, where he was arguably more comfortable.

If one were to argue that Pete played against inferior competition he/she should take this story to heart. In his final pro exhibition ever, Pistol Pete dropped 38 points in the Celtics' Green and White scrimmage on the likes of McHale, Bird, Parrish, Ford, and Maxwell.

Babe Ruth

The Great Bambino's "performance-enhancers" of hot dogs and beer serve as a stark contrast to the syringe inflated numbers of this generation. The Babe not only dominated baseball—he made it America's pastime.

The Babe's statistics were mind-blowing, as he hit 714 career home runs while keeping a lifetime batting average of .342. This doesn't even make mention of the fact that the Babe had a career ERA of 2.28.

He was a star before there was sports stars. If he were playing today he'd be hosting Saturday Night Live, have millions of dollars in endorsements, star in movies, and make Peyton Manning look like an unmotivated self-promoter.

The greatest argument against the Babe could be that the level of competition was low back then and he got to repeatedly face the same pitchers. However, the Babe played during the dead ball era, where he was swatting more home runs per year than some teams in the league.

Also, many people falsely believe that pitchers threw a lot slower during that time period. They may have not had radar guns but there is no evidence to suggest pitchers threw any slower than they do today. Pitchers such as Walter Johnson threw pitches that even the Babe complained were hard to see passing by.

The Babe's numbers would hold closely even in today's game, even if specialized pitching might affect them slightly. However, longer seasons and much more hitter-friendly ballparks would greatly improve the Babe's stats.

Just think—Yankee stadium in 1923 was 490 feet to dead center and 425 to right center. How many more home runs would the Babe have hit if those were reduced to 408 and 390?

However, as is the case with most past sports comparisons, we are only left to wonder.

NBA Draft: The New York Knicks Select...Isiah Thomas

The fans sitting in Madison Square Garden's WAMU Theatre became restless in their seats as they anticipated the selection about to be made by the New York Knicks.

"I think they have to take Kevin Love, he fits in nicely alongside Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry as a possible reincarnation of the Weather Girls [famous for the song 'It's Raining Men']," one fan was quoted as saying.

"What's that Italian guys name again? I swear I will go up there and shove a salami up his [expletive] if he gets picked by the Knicks," said a softer, gentler Knicks fan.

David Stern approached the podium and the crowd pretended it was a regular season Knicks game, going completely silent. The commissioner would then rattle off the next phrase with the conviction of Ron Burgundy.

"And with the sixth pick in the NBA Draft the New York Knicks select....Isiah Thomas?" David Stern shot up a ghostly stare as if he'd just been told that Tim Donaghy was standing over his shoulder.

The fans began to boo like it had just been announced that the New York Jets had drafted another tight end. One man set his John Starks jersey aflame on the stage and wept uncontrollably.

"We told Isiah he would still have a job in the Knicks organization and I intended to hold up that promise," Donnie Walsh reasoned with the press. "I mean we have a huge hole at the point guard with Stephon leaving next season, it just makes a whole lot of sense. I mean look at the guy, he's in great shape."

After ESPN took a quick commercial break to sweep away the remnants of Stephen A. Smtih's exploded head, Jay Bilas kept muttering the word upside and staring blankly into the camera.

Isiah stayed on stage for a few minutes as he took some pictures with the commissioner until finally being escorted off the stage by a SWAT unit.

"I haven't been this mad since Renaldo Balkman got picked, it's the worst night of my life," one Knick fan eloquently put it.

It's safe to say the Isiah Thomas era is far from over in New York, and the New York media couldn't be any more thankful.

All-ACC Football Preseason Selections

Following the graduation of such ACC mainstays as Matt Ryan and Chris Long, a new set of superstars look to carry the struggling conference. Despite overall struggles, the ACC has produced NFL ready talent, and this year's All-ACC list should feature many future stars.

Offense

Quarterback—Cullen Harper (Clemson)

Debated back and forth between Harper and Riley Skinner, but it came down to the fact that Harper just has a plethora of weapons around him this season. Another season like last year (27 TDs and six INTs) and Harper could be leading the Tigers to a BCS bowl appearance.

Running Back—James Davis (Clemson)

James Davis flirted with the idea of entering the NFL Draft but decided to return to Clemson for his senior campaign. The fact that he's averaged five yards a carry all three seasons in Death Valley and he was named a First Team All-ACC player last year make this selection a no-brainer.

Wide Reciever—Greg Carr (Florida State), Aaron Kelly (Clemson)

Carr had 45 catches for almost 800 yards last season and his 6'6" frame makes him a perfect target for struggling Drew Weatherford. Kelly was a first team selection last season after an amazing 88-catch, 1,000-yard effort. These two are the cream of a pretty formidable ACC receiver crop.

Tight End—Ryan Purvis (Boston College)

Purvis was another first team selection last year as he served as Matt Ryan's prime red zone target. He should continue to get looks this year as new quarterback Chris Crane will lean on Purvis' reliable hands.

Tackle—Andrew Gardner (Georgia Tech), Scott Burley (Maryland)

Gardner earned first team honors last season clearing the way for now professional Tashard Choice. Scott Burley battled some injuries last year, but should carry the Terps upfront this season.

Guard—Sergio Render (Virginia Tech), Clif Ramsey (Boston College)

Sergio Render has a monstrous 6'4" and 310-pound frame that dominates the Hokie rushing attack. Clif Ramsey is a flier to be the next one chosen in a long line of effective Boston College linemen.

Center—Ryan Shuman (Virginia Tech)

Shuman was serviceable last year for the Hokies and leads the way in a thin center class this year.

Defense

Defensive End—Everette Brown (Florida State), Eric Moncur (Miami)

Brown led the 'Noles in sacks last season and should spearhead an always dominant defensive unit. Moncur totaled 5.5 sacks last season and should work on bolstering that number in '09.

Defensive Tackle—Ron Brace (Boston College), Vance Walker (Georgia Tech)

Brace starts the season on the preseason Outland Trophy Watch List for top interior linemen. Vance Walker was a first team player last year and should help lead a new look Yellow Jackets squad.

Linebacker—Brian Toal (Boston College), Dave Philistin (Maryland), Aaron Curry (Wake Forest)

Toal is coming off a red-shirt injury season but should lead a revamped Eagles defense this season. Dave Philistin will have to fill in some of the holes left by the departed Erin Henderson. Aaron Curry had a very nice '08 season and should be the anchor for this year's Deacon defense.

Cornerback—Victor "Macho" Harris (Virginia Tech), Alphonso Smith (Wake Forest)

These two paired up to be last year's first team All-ACC corners and there is no reason they shouldn't repeat in '09.

Safety—Myron Rolle (Florida State), Michael Hamlin (Clemson)

Rolle had 67 tackles last season and is one of the few Seminoles who's found a way to avoid trouble down in Tallahassee. Michael Hamlin will be the leader of the Tigers' defense and is a big key in their BCS hopes this year.

Pre-Season All-ACC Football

Following the graduation of such ACC mainstays as Matt Ryan and Chris Long, a new set of superstars looks to carry the struggling conference. Despite overall struggles, the ACC has produced NFL ready talent and this year's All-ACC list should feature many future stars.

Offense

Quarterback—Cullen Harper (Clemson)

Debated back and forth between Harper and Riley Skinner, but it came down to the fact that Harper just has a plethora of weapons around him this season. Another season like last year (27 TDs and 6 INTs) and Harper could be leading the Tigers to a BCS bowl appearance.

Running Back—James Davis (Clemson)

James Davis flirted with the idea of entering the NFL Draft but decided to return to Clemson for his senior campaign. The fact that he's averaged five yards per carry all three seasons in Death Valley and was named a first Team All-ACC player last year makes this selection a no-brainer.

Wide Receiver—Greg Carr (Florida State) and Aaron Kelly (Clemson)

Carr had 45 catches for almost 800 yards last season and his 6'6" frame makes him a perfect target for struggling Drew Weatherford. Kelly was a first team selection last season after an amazing 88 catch, 1,000 yard effort last season. These two are the cream of a pretty formidable ACC receiver crop.

Tight End—Ryan Purvis (Boston College)

Purvis was another first team selection last year as he served as Matt Ryan's prime red zone target. He should continue to get looks this year as new quarterback Chris Crane will lean on Purvis's reliable hands.

Tackle—Andrew Gardner (Georgia Tech) and Scott Burley (Maryland)

Gardner earned first team honors last season clearing the way for now professional Tashard Choice. Scott Burley battled some injuries last year but should carry the Terps upfront this season.

Guard—Sergio Render (Virginia Tech) and Clif Ramsey (Boston College)

Center—Ryan Shuman (Virginia Tech)

Shuman was serviceable last year for the Hokies and leads the way in a thin center class this year.

Defense

Defensive End—Everette Brown (Florida State) and Eric Moncur (Miami)

Brown led the 'Noles in sacks last season and should spearhead an always dominant defensive unit. Moncur totaled 5.5 sacks last season and should work on bolstering that number in '09.

Open Mic: Soccer Struggles in the US

Every decade or so, an imported superstar toward the tail end of his career shows up in the States in an attempt to invigorate the nation with soccer fever.

However, the effort always flames out and American children continue to turn in their soccer cleats around the same time they're turning in their tighty-whiteys.

Many people blame the slow nature of soccer or the unnecessary flopping and wimpy nature of the game for its lack of success stateside. However, the more glaring problem goes far deeper for young athletes in America.

Soccer will always continue to struggle in the United States because young athletes are afforded so many different athletic options that soccer often gets pushed to the wayside.

It's not that a lot of good, young athletes don't play soccer; it's the fact that baseball, football, and basketball water down their prospective fields. A young boy growing up an England can play soccer or he can become a young, Cockney pickpocket; those are really his only two options to pass the time.

Young children throughout Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia don't have the luxury of ditching soccer once they become bored with it because without futbol they'd lose most outlets for recreational activities.

When kids in America get sick of soccer, they can easily transition to football or baseball rather than stick it out with "The World's Most Beautiful Game."

It would be hard to argue that the same American children wouldn't stick with soccer if they're only other options were cricket or tennis. Young soccer programs in the United States are more often than not treated as baby-sitters rather than serious sporting programs.

It's safe to say that not even Ritalin can hold kids attention spans toward soccer these days.

2008 NBA Finals: Lasting Legacy of the Players

Following the 131-92 drubbing the Lakers suffered at the hands of the Celtics last night, many players start heading in different directions at the crossroads of their career.

Many wondered before the series if Kobe could reach MJ heights by leading the Lakers to a title this season; however, it was evident that a few other players benefited a lot more from the outcome of this series. An NBA title can do wonders for the way a player is perceived historically because there are plenty of great teams, but at the end of the year, "There can only be one."

Paul Pierce

He took his game to new heights during the postseason as he became the de facto leader of the "Big Three." With Kevin Garnett playing streaky and shying away in big moments as well as Ray Allen's comatose approach to rounds one and two, Pierce was forced to carry a heavier offensive load.

Pierce has toughed out some tough years in Boston including last year's painful fiasco. Yet, he's been the face of the franchise throughout these down times netting six All-Star appearances and leading a short-handed team to the Eastern Conference finals along with Antoine Walker.

This postseason however he proved he could be the go-to-guy, evidenced by his game seven performance against the Cavaliers where he matched LeBron James shot for shot. In the NBA Finals he showed he could play both ends of the floor by helping hold Kobe Bryant to humane levels of scoring.

This incredible performance has launched Pierce into the 50 Greatest Players All-Time in the NBA. If you don't believe me just look how he compares to these other two all-time greats.

Paul Pierce—23.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 3.9 apg; 1 NBA championship, 1 Finals MVP

Julius Erving—24.2 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 4.2 apg; 1 NBA championship, 2 ABA Championships

Clyde Drexler—20.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 5.6 apg; 1 NBA championship

Some may try to make the argument that Pierce's statistics got a little inflated by playing for poor teams for an extended stretch of his career. However, in 2005-2006 Pierce led the top 30 scorers in the league in points-per-shot average.

He's always been an unselfish player which helped him mold these Celtics into champions with so many offseason transactions. This NBA Finals performance throws Pierce in with the 50 Greatest Players All-Time.

Kevin Garnett

Going into the series it would have appeared that Garnett had the most to gain out of any of the Celtics if he netted his first championship ring. However, Garnett didn't play great basketball for most of the series and showed why he serves better as a number two scoring option rather than the go-to-guy.

Garnett can now be remembered as one of the greatest power forwards ever and won't have that monkey hanging on his back that plagues Karl Malone. The minute the Celtics signed Garnett they became a championship contender and that cannot be overstated enough.

For all of Garnett's offensive struggles, they would not have won this series without him. His defensive prowess makes this team run effectively and helped the Celtics dominate the paint throughout the series. The Lakers did not have a single offensive rebound until the fourth quarter in game six as Garnett dominated Pau Gasol once again.

Garnett was the Defensive Player of the Year and provided the emotional backbone for this Celtics team all season long. He was the Defensive Player of the Year and helped keep the offensive-minded Lakers at bay all series long. He helped turn show time into no time and earned his first ring.

Ray Allen

It remains to be seen whether he had tired out or was just upset over the fact that his new resurgence didn't warrant a "He Got Game" sequel, but in the NBA Finals he went from being the reason why the Celtics lost in the playoffs to an important piece in their Finals quest.

Ray hit rock bottom when he failed to score in game one of the Cleveland series and struggled pretty much the rest of the conference semi-finals. However, he started to come back to life against the Pistons and by the end of the series looked to be shaping up for a push in the Finals.

Allen may have provided the defining moment of the postseason as he blew past Sasha Vujacic, capping off an impressive game four comeback in Los Angeles. Even Papa Shuttlesworth (Denzel Washington) had to be impressed by the beautiful drive to the lane.

Ray Allen is now probably one of the top 10—maybe top five—shooting guards of this NBA era after having put together a wonderful NBA season. The championship only adds to the legacy of a guy who has been a solid presence throughout his eleven years in the league.

Kobe Bryant

It's time to officially end any talk of comparing Kobe Bryant to Michael Jordan. Kobe just hasn't reached that level especially after allowing his team to get beat up by 39 points in the deciding game of the NBA Finals.

When Jordan played it seemed as if everyone he played with thoroughly enjoyed being on the court with him. Scottie Pippen had the talent to be his own star in the NBA but stayed with Jordan to play Robin to his Batman while winning NBA title after NBA title.

Kobe won an MVP award this year after openly griping about the quality of his teammates and demanding a trade at the beginning of the season. Throughout every game you can catch him shooting terrifying glares at teammates when they make mistakes and openly yelling at them during timeouts.

It's going to be hard to bring in the right role players to help win a championship when Kobe will be the one making sure they know their role.

Kobe is one of the greatest talents of all time but barring a sudden change of attitude, he will always be a poor teammate. This NBA Finals series only further revealed his flaws and showed he hasn't reached the heights of Jordan. I wouldn't even be surprised if Kobe hasn't spoken a word to one of his teammates yet. Oh well, he can always demand a trade later this year.

Willie Randolph: Fired from New York Mets Via Text Message

At around midnight last night while sitting in his hotel room, watching Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns, Willie Randolph's cell phone began to vibrate on the dresser. Willie sleepily rolled over hoping to find the latest joke of the day because times had been tough lately and he could use a good laugh. However, the text simply read:

"Willie, it's been a great four years together. We really had some good times didn't we (especially that one night in Milwaukee ;-). But I think it's best we move on and see other people. Sorry but I got to fire your Willie. Ttyl."

—$$O-Dog$$

Willie was simply stunned. He tried to call Omar Minaya back but his calls kept going to voicemail.

"I didn't think it was real," Willie commented later. "I felt like he had to be lying. I mean we had won that night. I was under the impression that if we went undefeated for the rest of the year my job was safe."

After repeated efforts to reach him over the phone, Willie texted Omar Minaya back.

"Omar, come on am I really fired? I thought we were buddies. I had just bought a new Mets bumper sticker to put on my car. Now what am I supposed to do?"

—Will the Thrill

P.S. I still have those pictures from Milwaukee.

Omar Minaya had come to a crossroads with the Mets season and franchise: Return Willie's call and set up a face-to-face meeting, or hope the text message sticks and Willie decides not to show up at the ballpark the next day?

It was clear that the Mets had already made it a priority not to handle things professionally and Omar shot Willie back another text.

"Sorry man it's just the way it's got to be. It's really not you, it's me. I just need to see someone else for a little while. You're stuff will be outside of Shea on Monday, near the airport side. Mr. Met will still do your kid's birthday party. On me. Peace"

$$O-Dog$$

The writing had been on the wall for a while with Willie, and now it was etched onto the screen of his cell phone. Willie Randolph was now unemployed and had eliminated Omar Minaya from his "five." You stay classy, New York Mets.

Doug Flutie Returns to Boston College: Church Declares Holy Day

Chestnut Hill—While driving through the area on a promotional Flutie Flakes tour, Doug Flutie happened to visit the Boston College Campus. Flutie parked his Corvette with the license plate HsmnJesus emblazoned on the front and immediately called his nephew Billy, who plays football at BC.

A man down the street was fumbling around for a quarter to put into the meter down the road on Commonwealth Avenue. He yelled out to Flutie and inquired if he had a quarter to spare.

Flutie knew what he had to do. He reached into his pocket, rolled out into the middle of the street and floated a beautiful, spiraling 25-cent piece into the waiting arms of the skinny bystander. Flutie shot him a glance, winked, and jumped uncontrollably after completing the most miraculous coin toss since the '85 Super Bowl.

Flutie then made his way past St. Ignatius of Loyola Church and immediately confused many unsuspecting patrons when fans started to proclaim that the Messiah was returning. Churchgoers ran outside wondering if their years of service to the Catholic Church were finally rewarded, yet they weren't the least bit disappointed when they found out that Doug Flutie was standing outside and not Jesus himself.

School officials were notified immediately, and classes were canceled for the rest of the week. Flutie decided to hold his own lecture on becoming so awesome and succeeding while wearing size nine Nikes. As he gazed into the crowd, girls and boys alike began removing their shirts and screaming uncontrollably.

The school's administration decided it was about time to name a building after Flutie. Boston College now features the Douglas Flutie School of Nursing and Intimate Times. Doug also had them instill a clause that only Flutie Flakes would be served on Fridays in all the cafeterias.

After making a quick trip to the gym and dunking a few basketballs on some unsuspecting intramural players, Doug decided it was time to pack up and go. The Boston College Superfans started rolling up the 8,000-foot red carpet that had been rolled out before his every step and wished him goodbye.

Children cried and nuns wept that day as Flutie vanished into the horizon. Matt Ryan put his hands outstretched next to his ear and mouthed the words "Call me" as Flutie gave a wave. It will always be a memorable day for all at Boston College—especially those four girls who will have a lot of explaining to do to their parents.

Yet their parents will be glad to know that one day, they too will have a piece of the Flutie franchise.

2008 NCAA Football Preview: Royal Rumble Edition

It could be said that professional wrestling mirrors life, or that it completely bludgeons it into oblivion; take your pick. Here's a look at the college football preseason 2008 rankings with each team being compared to a different WWE star. This may seem a bit absurd, but so will these preseason rankings in about five months.

Florida (Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels)

The Gators have that sex appeal with their high-flying offense that makes them appealing as a title contender this year. Shawn Michaels has always been appealing in his boy toy role and has always been one of the top competitors in between various periods of retirement.

The Gators moved on from their own Ron Zook "retirement" period and have one of the best finishers in football (Tim Tebow) who is quite comparable to Michaels' Sweet Chin Music.

Ohio State (Undertaker)

The Buckeyes have been a dominant presence in college football for decades, yet now seem to garner little admiration from the viewing public. The Undertaker was a mainstay in the battle for the Heavyweight belt yet never gained widespread popularity probably based on the fact that scared the crap out of everyone.

The Buckeyes are also able to gain top recruits by buying them Corvettes (see: Terelle Pryor) whereas the Undertaker bolstered his Ministry of Darkness with promises of human sacrifice.

USC (The Rock)

Ah, the charismatic, people's champion. That phrase could easily describe USC or the Rock. The Rock always seemed bigger than wrestling itself with his electric personality and incredible skill set. USC has grown to be almost bigger than college football by dominating on the field.

USC takes advantage of their close proximity to Hollywood and churns out media stars that accept bribes and party with under aged girls. Entertainment doesn't get any better when these two parties are involved.

Oklahoma (Triple H)

Whether it's through the role of villain (Fiesta Bowl vs. Boise State) or through the role of the favorite, both of these parties have been pillars of excellence. Love him or hate him, Triple H is one of the best wrestlers on the planet and even helped wrestlers like the Road Dogg rise to stardom. Not to be outdone, even Oklahoma could turn quarterbacks like Jason White into Heisman winners.

Georgia (Batista)

Georgia hadn't been a national title contender in some time and Batista has just burst onto the wrestling scene but has been dominant since his arrival. Batista was able to break up the pecking order of the WWE by unseating Triple H and moving past Randy Orton. Georgia is looking to unseat LSU and Florida and claim their first SEC title since 2005.

Missouri (John Cena)

Both are relatively new arrivals to their respective institutions but have experienced a great deal of success. Will Missouri be able to usher in a new era in Big 12 football as Cena tries to usher in a new era in the WWE? My answer is no to both if Kansas coach Mark Mangino has anything to say about it.

Clemson (Bad Ass Billy Gunn)

Clemson continually shows promise and potential but sputters out at the end of the season short of a BCS bowl game. Bad Ass Billy Gunn was a formidable wrestler but struggled on his own away from the Road Dogg.

It's funny how Terry Bowden will never escape his dad's shadow and Billy Gunn couldn't find a future without the Road Dogg.

Auburn (Edge)

Auburn doesn't really do anything flashy or grab tons of headlines, but year in and year out they challenge for the SEC crown. Edge is kind of the same way as he is an all business wrestler who doesn't garner much attention when he's not killing small animals, yet both are incredible performers in their given arenas.

LSU (Mick Foley)

The many personalities of Mick Foley suit the enigmatic style of Les Miles perfectly. Both are never afraid to take chances and have always wanted to be heartthrob media darlings like their counterparts in Florida.

Texas (Stone Cold Steve Austin)

Stone Cold has to represent his home state of Texas. The Longhorns and Stone Cold have brash styles and rabid fan bases that help make them unique. The "Hook 'em Horns" rallying signal has caught on almost as well as Austin's double middle finger salute.

Texas Tech (X-Pac)

Texas Tech continues to assemble a quality football squad that gets overshadowed by the bigger players in the Big 12. Even during an incredible run last year, Kansas and Missouri had to go and spoil Tech's limelight.

X-Pac was always overshadowed by the other members of D-X but he had a similar high-flying, tactical style to Texas Tech and had some success of his own if anyone cared to notice.

West Virginia (Chris Jericho)

Both are never really seen as a top challenger or force to be reckoned with but every year you look up and see that West Virginia is in the Top 10 again or that Chris Jericho is holding another belt. However, West Virginia could run into problems without Coach Rich Rodriguez and Steve Slaton just as it looks Jericho's career may soon be coming to an end.

South Florida (Randy Orton)

Randy Orton may have had more success so far compared to South Florida, but he has amassed it in a very short amount of time. Randy Orton is helping reshape the WWE just as the Bulls are helping re-create a new image for Big East football through ugly Mohawk, winning, and green and gold uniforms.

Penn State (Bret Hart)

Bret had a very long and successful career going about his business while dominating the WWF with his Hart Foundation or beating down the WCW as the Hit Man. Penn State has enjoyed long-lasting success but is it time for Joe Pa to hang it up like Bret? I don't know, maybe Joe will return my call after his afternoon nap.

South Carolina (Val Venis)

Val Venis has made a living as a sex symbol for the lady fans of the WWE. South Carolina has made a living being the sexy early season pick for predictors everywhere. Val Venis is now hanging onto to his wrestling career by a thread, and the Gamecocks are trying to not to be wiped out in the competitive SEC.

Tennessee (Kane)

Tennessee went out and won the SEC East last year despite getting little acknowledgement for it. Kane was always dominant but lived in the Undertaker's shadow similar to the shadow the Vols suffer from in the SEC.

Oregon (Rey Mysterio)

Rey Mysterio has dazzled with his athletic abilities for years becoming a mainstay in the Cruiserweight division. Oregon has always used athleticism and exorbitant Nike funding to remain competitive in the Pac-10. Plus only those Duck uniforms could match the outlandish nature of Mysterio's masks.

BYU (Ken Shamrock)

BYU is not very flashy and neither is Ken Shamrock. He is the most logical choice because there aren't many Mormon wrestlers out there. Ken Shamrock just goes out and bashes faces while BYU just goes out and wins football games while abstaining from drinking and premarital intercourse.

Wisconsin (Big Show)

Neither does anything that makes your jaw drop or really impresses you. Both are just big lumbering figures that continually stay near the top despite better judgment.

Virginia Tech (Matt Hardy)

Virginia Tech had great times in the Big East but is really coming into its own in the ACC. Matt Hardy dominated with Jeff Hardy but is now establishing a more dominant career for himself as a solo act.

Florida State (Hulk Hogan)

Both were once powerhouses; now both only get attention for the problems their kids are having.

Kansas (Cody Rhodes)

Kansas broke into the college football scene with an Orange Bowl victory. Cody Rhodes just won a Tag Team belt. Will both be here to stay or fade into anonymity?

Utah (Hardcore Holly)

Neither the Utes nor Holly are a main fixture on their respective stages but each pop up into the limelight every so often. A few years ago with Alex Smith at the helm the Utes crashed the BCS party and in the late 90's Holly was bashing heads as the Hardcore Champion only to recently reemerge as a Tag Team Champion.

Notre Dame (Ric Flair)

Both were dominant years ago. Note the emphasis on the word years. Flair realized it was time to hang it up and this year, it might be time for the Irish to hang it up as a title contender as well.

Alabama (Jerry Lawler)

Both are trying to recapture old glory and soak up as many headlines as possible before people catch on that they're really just a nuisance. Not even Botox injections and a new haircut could spruce up the King, which is similar to how the hiring of Nick Saban did little to raise the Tide out of mediocrity.

College Football: The Ultimate Road Trip

College road trips are about as American as apple pie, hamburgers and money laundering.

Throw in some college football, and it's about as American as Thomas Jefferson officiating a hot-dog eating contest on top of Mount Rushmore.

Thus, I planned my trip to visit my girlfriend at the University of Delaware and then head down to the BC vs. Maryland game. Then I decided to pick up another two tickets—and my girlfriend's sister and good friend Andrew Kupec were then thrust into Sportsgasm '07.

It's weekends like these that can define your life. This is where legends are made—the college football road trip.

Day 1

Kupec arrives at Boston College campus at about one o'clock Eastern Standard Time. For the entire weekend he is armed only with a half-full backpack and the heart of a champion. He had planned to bring only the clothes on his back and shorts to sleep in until finally I convinced him to bring along a long-sleeved shirt and a coat.

Contrary to his misconception, Delaware and Maryland in November have about the same weather as Boston in November. No, we were not traveling below the Mason-Dixon line—and game time temperature was an estimated 35 degrees. My forward thinking and knowledge of Kupec's intuition—or lack thereof—saved us from a whole lot of whining on Saturday night.

I went to my last class of the day. Of course it had to be Calculus—as I mindlessly jotted down notes, the only Xs and Ys I wanted to think about were the weak side receiver and the tight end.

As soon as class was over it was time to hit the road. We had 350 miles to cover and the high expectations of an extraordinary weekend to fulfill.

We took off from Chestnut Hill around 2:30 with me, my little brother, Kupec, my friend Dan, and my mom quarterbacking the first leg of our journey. I felt like Bobby Petrino taking over for the Falcons with Joey Harrington at QB—high excitement crushed by a quarterback traveling substantially below normal expectations.

In Petrino's case, normal expectations were a plus-60% completion percentage and a quarterback rating higher than room temperature. Our expectations were the speed limit—which my mom insisted on driving 10 miles per hour under. However, slow driving and Tappan Zee Bridge traffic could not dampen our spirits.

We then left my hometown in northern New Jersey a little before 8:30, needing to catch Dan's 10:40 train down to College Park. I was quarterbacking the two minute (two hour) drill of this drive. Would I be Matt Ryan vs. Virginia Tech—or Matt Ryan vs. Florida State?

Come on, who out there could doubt my driving ability? I handled that Jersey Turnpike better than anyone since Tony Soprano.

We made it into Wilmington with time to spare—enough time, in fact, to be approached by a homeless man on a bicycle with pegs. Homeless people make me about as uncomfortable as Britney Spears on back to school night. I just never know how to handle the situation.

Then as we tried to find our way out of "beautiful" riverfront Wilmington, Kupec and I became lost in not the nicest of neighborhoods. I decided we should turn around, which seemed like a good idea until we pulled up to a light with another car waiting in the exact same line as us.

I knew someone was wrong here, and you guessed it—it was me. I quickly turned onto another one way road, nearly crashing into another car, hung a quick U-turn, and then took a scenic tour of the Wilmington projects at 11 o'clock on a Friday night.

We finally made it out of Wilmington after running several red lights and making several illegal U-turns, and we were on our way to the University of Delaware. We got there in about twenty minutes, ran a red light just outside of my girlfriend's dorm (yeah, that could have ruined the trip real fast), and finally met the warm embrace of my girlfriend.

The euphoria was once again brought back to reality, as we realized Kupec still had no place to sleep and it was 11:30 already. We stuck to his weekend slogan that "everything is going to be alright, alright," and headed out for the night. We went to a house party hosted by the Ultimate Frisbee team, so I knew we were in for an interesting time.

Lo and behold, the minute we walk in the door a guy approaches me about my Boston College hat and tells me he's going to kick my ass because I'm not a Rutgers fan. Shitty logic, but some quick thinking and Kupec sweet talk backs the guy off—and he even hands us two beers.

We head down into the basement where we end up meeting a whole cast of characters—including a guy who had just returned from Iraq, who Kupec and I held a ten minute shouting match/conversation with. Although he wasn't traveling with us, he had the enthusiasm a trip like ours could have used. This guy was like John Starks in his prime—pure electricity.

A few minutes later, two girls starting kissing each other a few steps away from Kupec, prompting his jaw to drop and a stare that lasted a good thirty seconds before he introduces himself. Then Kupec starts a conversation with an Asian kid at the party who I end up calling Naroki and Kupec ends up sharing an awkward dance with later on.

Before we leave, Kupec intimidates one of the kids living in the house and tells off a girl who had previously not given him any cranberry juice.

After heading off to a shady outdoor tiki bar, we head back to the dorm. We need to rest up for a big day tomorrow. One of my girlfriend's friends is kind enough to allow Kupec to sleep in her room, and we mentally prepare for the Saturday Sportsgasm.

Day 2

Wake up call is about 11 a.m. as we struggle to wake up. However, we know a huge day is ahead, and our lethargy doesn't last very long.

Breakfast at Panera Bread starts our morning at about 12. We then prepare for the game as I get decked out in my University of Delaware jersey and look forward to my first taste of Division I-AA football.

We hop on the UD shuttle, and Kupec and I immediately decide it's time to start firing things up a bit. We start chanting "Let's go Delaware" and "We love Rich Gannon," yet no one seems to be joining us.

We take this as a direct slap in the face and try to get everyone fired up. This prompted my girlfriend's friend to yell at us that we don't even go to the University of Delaware. We simply played along and I told everyone we were from Canada and wanted to experience college football.

Kupec thought me stating we lived in Canada should be backed up with an Australian accent. No one ever said he was the brightest kid in the world—but he means well.

We arrived at Delaware's stadium. If you were wondering, college football lives there, and Kupec and I wanted to let everyone know that. I was pretty amazed by the fan support that Delaware draws, as Kupec and I estimated the attendance at about 25,000, and coming from the source that is a pretty accurate guess.

It was really a cool experience as the University of Delaware carries a pretty solid fan base, and I was completely fired up about receiving my very own pair of thunder sticks, while Kupec was not as thrilled. The game was fast-paced with both teams playing lots of offense and not so much defense.

The end of regulation was completely insane. Delaware was stopped on fourth down, but then made a defensive stand and got the ball back around the fifty with under a minute to play. A few quick passes got them inside the ten and another pass got them to the one yard line.

With ten seconds left, Delaware threw a quick pass to the right and the man was tackled short of the end zone. Yes—Delaware ran a pass play from the one that was complete and stopped short of the end zone.

Earlier in the game I commented to Kupec that I had never seen a scoreboard that displayed the tenths of a second for a football game: foreshadowing, I think. The quarterback rushed the team back to the line and seemingly snapped the ball and rushed it in with about 0.4 seconds left on the clock.

Richmond stormed the field thinking they won, but then the refs finally signaled touchdown and Delaware went nuts. It was a truly wonderful sight that was only missing a leaping Doug Flutie to top everything off.

In overtime each team continued to not play defense, except for the third overtime where both teams missed field goals, with Delaware missing a 22-yarder to win the game. The fourth overtime was two plays long as each team scored on the very first play.

The game ended on a Delaware prayer into the end zone that was swatted down, giving Richmond an amazing five-overtime victory. I would have liked to see Delaware win, but I was incredibly satisfied with seeing one of the most exciting football games I've seen in my life at any level.

The next stop was Maryland—we were running late, but there was more college football to be seen.

We headed down I-95 on empty stomachs but far from empty spirits. Our beloved sidekick Kupec was almost lost to, how do you say, "relationship crisis," but we persevered. The ride down was tense as we were rushing to make the game, but the frequent yells of "College Park, Bubba Sparx" helped lighten the mood.

We arrived on campus at around the eight o'clock start time, but we were forced to park in another zip code, yet somehow still on the enormous campus that is the University of Maryland.

I understand now what Billingsley meant when he said he would miss the lights in Friday Night Lights—because you know what, I miss the lights too. Looking up at that giant stadium and those glaring lights, my inner football player kicked in and I knew it was go time.

For me, go time is now grabbing a hot dog and rocking my SuperFan shirt, not strapping on the shoulder pads and throwing on the jersey, but I felt equally as fired up.

I got into the stadium just as Boston College scored to tie the game at seven apiece. We got to our seats, two rows from the turf right next to the Boston College band. It's true what people say—you never realize how big they are until you sit that close. I can assure you, Baldwin is that big. He's a big mascot, ladies and gentlemen.

Throughout the game, Boston College's defense struggled to stop anything. Matt Ryan was being outdueled by Maryland's backup quarterback. Maryland came out ready to play and was taking it to the eighth-ranked Eagles.

BC took a 21-20 lead just after halftime, but that would be the only lead they had all game. Maryland responded well when it looked like Boston College was finally making their move. They would go on to score 22 unanswered points before Boston College tried valiantly to orchestrate another late game comeback.

However, all was not lost. I got a high five from Baldwin and made my girlfriend's dreams come true by getting her one too. Also, I was made aware by my girlfriend on a couple of occasions that Matt Ryan was good-looking. Thought I'd pass along the information.

The night was over, our college football extravaganza was over, BC's outside shot at playing in the national title game was over—but it truly was a memorable trip.

So the lesson, ladies and gentlemen, is that college football lives here. College football lives in Newark, Delaware and in College Park, Maryland. It lives in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts and in Los Angeles, California.

It lives in Tuscaloosa, Lincoln, and Ann Arbor. It lives in places like Death Valley, Happy Valley, the Big House, and Tiger Stadium. It lives in the hopes and dreams of young boys and the memories and fallen dreams of men.

College football lives in every one of us, and for one weekend was defined by two boys—check that, men—who were on a mission to find college football inside themselves. And now I'm proud to say today, mission accomplished.

If John Mellencamp makes this last section into a song for next season, I expect all royalties.

Going Coastal: ACC Football Preview Part I

It could be said that 2007 was a down year for the ACC, as only Wake Forest and Boston College went on to win their postseason contests. Yet, there were signs for optimism even if the ACC is 1-9 in all-time in BCS bowl games.

Boston College, Virginia and North Carolina all seem to be programs on the rise that could help bolster the overall strength of the conference. Even Duke grabbed a few headlines in the off season that didn't involve Coach K or stripper scandals. Will 2008 be the year that the ACC starts flexing its muscle or will it remain just a less criticized version of the Big East?

ATLANTIC

Wake Forest- Wake Forest ended last season on a high note by beating UConn in its postseason bowl game after winning the ACC the year before. Riley Skinner returns at quarterback and could have a good chance at being the standout quarterback in the ACC this season. The Deacons also return their leading rusher in Josh Adams, but will have to find a way to replace top receiver Kenneth Moore. Wake will benefit from favorable scheduling that exempts them from facing the Hokies, and setting up face offs with Clemson (Thursday night game) and Boston College at home.

Boston College- Many people will be doubting the Eagles as they look to replace the greatest thing to happen to Chestnut Hill since Doug Flutie and Catholicism. The Eagles will also have to replace defensive stalwarts Jamie Silva, JoLonn Dunbar and Dejaun Tribble. Yet, Brian Toal and B.J. Raji will return this season to the defense and new quarterback Chris Crane performed well in spring football. Top recruit Josh Haden will lead the back by committee. The Eagles may not have the same magical run as last year but their recent string of bowl victories is hard to ignore. It should be another good year for the ACC's distant cousin.

Clemson- The Tigers are always a trendy pick to shoot up the ACC standings each year, yet they always fall short. Yet, these constant failures were enough to warrant a hefty contract extension for Tommy Bowden. Something tells me with a different last name, his run may have ended in Clemson a year or two ago. The Tigers do return 15 of their 22 starters but will have to replace four starters on the offensive line including four year starter and All-American tackle Barry Richardson. Clemson will be returning 1,000 yard rusher James Davis and 1,000 yard receiver Aaron Kelly. If the offensive line shapes up, this could be one of the most explosive offenses in the ACC, well at least until that end of season collapse.

Florida State- It will be tough for Florida State to get going this year, figuring they face a myriad of suspensions to open the season. It will be Drew Weatherford's last chance to turn it around this season as his stay at FSU has mirrored Chris Wienke's pro career more so than his collegiate one. Leading rusher Antone Smith returns as well as standouts cornerback Myron Rolle and reciever Greg Carr. The Seminoles should continue their mercurial ways and find themselves sitting right around .500 come bowl season.

NC State- The traitor Tom O'Brien begins his second season at the helm of the Wolfpack. His first one was mostly something to forget, as the team struggled throughout. However, they were a very young team which makes them a likely candidate to be this year's sexy upstart team. Yet, I still don't see them making the leap. Daniel Evans returns at quarterback, but he is far from a sure thing even to retain the starting job. Tom O'Brien has done a nice job recruiting but the season really hinges on the production of returning starters TE Anthony Hill and TB Andre Brown to lead the rest of the 'Pack.

Maryland- It will be hard to replace the formidable running tandem of Lance Ball and Keon Lattimore, which could cause the Terps to struggle all season long; losing LB Erin Henderson only adds insult to injury. The passing attack should be the strength of the team as Darrius Heyward-Bey brings his NFL skill set back to College Park. Unless the landscape in Maryland shapes up in a hurry the season should mostly proceed at a Terrapin pace all season long.
