What People Are Saying About the Baltimore Orioles (September 5)

This is the seventh article of my weekly series "What People Are Saying about the Baltimore Orioles. Sorry for not writing much as of late. Let's say swine flu and school have kept me busy.

This week, we go around the web looking at a flurry of O's topics, including Nolan Reimold, Brandon Waring's power, a 100-loss season, weird incidents, and predictions for 2010. Let's see what people had to say.

MASNsports.com's Roch Kubatko talks to former Orioles' catcher Chris Hoiles about a possible switch to first base for outfielder Nolan Reimold:

"Could Nolan Reimold play first base if the Orioles decided to move him?

(They haven't, by the way. It's also a hypothetical question).

"Nolan comes from a family of athletes," said Hoiles, a coach at Bowling Green when Reimold was one of its outfielders. "Nolan is a tremendous athlete himself, so he does have that going for him. But moving from the outfield to the infield, things are a lot faster, a lot quicker. There's more technique involved. Lots of things go into it."

Also from MASNsports.com, Steve Melewski writes about prospect Brandon Waring's dominance over Single-A pitching:

"The 23-year-old Waring, who joined Double-A Bowie on Tuesday, batted .273-26-90 this year with 35 doubles in 128 games for the Keys (Waring homered and drove in five runs in his first Bowie game Tuesday night).

Quite a performance for a player completing his first season in the organization."

The Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly discusses whether or not the O's will hit 100 losses this season:

"With two more losses, the Orioles will clinch their 12th consecutive sub-.500 season, the second-longest active losing streak in the majors behind only the Pittsburgh Pirates.

If the Orioles (54-80) drop 10 of their final 28 games, they will register their seventh season of 90 or more defeats in their past nine campaigns. They had lost 90 or more games only five times from the club's 1954 inception through 2000."

MLB.com's Spencer Fordin talks about the recent "Glove Incident" in last night's game against the Rangers:

"The Orioles and Rangers engaged in a bout of tit-for-tat on Friday night, when both objected to a light colored glove on an opposing pitcher's hand. Texas starter Scott Feldman was forced to change his glove for something darker before the bottom of the second started, and Baltimore reliever Cla Meredith was subjected to the same treatment in the seventh."

Bleacher Report's Dean Hybl believes that now is the time for Felix Pie to prove his worth:

"With Jones now out for at least the next couple of weeks—and potentially for the remainder of the season—Pie should get what some thought was all he needed during his time in Chicago: a chance to play everyday.

If his performance over the last month is any indication, Pie could be ready for a big month with the bat and the glove.

As the Orioles continue to build for 2010, whether Pie is part of the plans could be determined over the next few weeks."

B/R's Isaac Barrow predicts the 2009 Orioles rotation and lineup:

"Right now, the rotation is young—but talented. Veteran Jeremy Guthrie leads it, and he's followed by not one, not two, not three, but four rookies.

First, there's David Hernandez, followed by Jason Berken, Chris Tillman, and Brian Matusz; however, it's very unlikely the rotation will look the same next year.

The lineup will most likely look different next year, too. Brian Roberts, Felix Pie, and Adam Jones round out the top three, followed by Nick Markakis, Nolan Reimold, Luke Scott, Matt Wieters, Melvin Mora, and Cesar Izturis."

Baltmore Orioles' Brian Roberts' Recent Power Surge Bodes Well For Future

During the offseason, the O’s had several goals in mind. One of which was to get their young stud outfielder Nick Markakis signed to a multi-year extension. Another was to do the same for their veteran second baseman.

Brian Roberts, the team’s switch-hitting leadoff hitter, was signed to a four-year, $44 million extension, giving Orioles’ fans assurance that Charm City’s favorite player was staying with the club.

As the team moves through its rebuilding stage, many people asked the same question: “Where does Roberts fit in?”

Some thought of dealing him, and several offers have arisen over the past two seasons. In 2008, it was rumored that Roberts had been dealt to the Chicago Cubs for pitchers Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher, and shortstop Ronny Cedeno. This lie was essentially shot down.

In 2009, other Chicago trade talks swirled, centering now around the city’s American League affiliate, the White Sox. There was distinct whispering going around that the O’s had offered a deal to the Sox, sending Roberts to the AL Central for pitcher Gavin Floyd and young second baseman Chris Getz.

In due time, this idea also diminished.

Now, the O’s knew Roberts was there to stay, and now all that was needed was consistent production from their veteran infielder.

Instead of dealing him for prospects, the team had a new plan of action: Keep him at the top of the batting order for the next four years, setting up the hitters behind him. With the recent arrivals of rookies Matt Wieters and Nolan Reimold to go with Nick Markakis and Adam Jones, having Roberts leading off each game could only help.

With his ability to swipe bags with ease (40 SBs in ‘08) and rip doubles off the outfield walls (51 2Bs in ‘08), he is the perfect hitter to set up the rest of the lineup.

Now, though, B-Rob (as many O’s fans refer to him as) has re-acquired a new tool he has not unlocked since 2005: Power.

So far this season, he has hit 14 home runs, second to his career high 18 only four years ago. In his last six contests, he has ripped five long balls, proving to fans and analysts alike that the man still has it in him.

So how does this bode for the future?

To put it simply, very well.

Though I do not expect Roberts to hit 15 homers year-after-year, it is still encouraging to know that he has lost little-to-no power over these past few seasons.

With the batting order slowly filling up with young stars bursting with power potential (First baseman Brandon Snyder and third baseman Josh Bell should be joining the big league club sometime in the next season-and-a-half.), it is always good to know the leadoff hitter can also bring some “pop” to the plate.

Is it just me, or does the future of O’s baseball just get better with every new day?

What People Are Saying About the Baltimore Orioles (Aug. 16)

This is the sixth article of my weekly series "What People Are Saying about the Baltimore Orioles.

This week, several topics are covered, including rookie Brian Matusz, the player to be named later in the Zaun deal, key questions for the Birds, and more. Let's see what people had to say.

MASNsports.com's Roch Kubatko grades rookie southpaw Brian Matusz:

"We've seen the good, bad and mediocre from Orioles rookie left-hander Brian Matusz.

I'm giving him a "mediocre" grade tonight because, though he allowed four earned runs (five total), they all came in the third inning. He walked three - again, all in the same inning - and struck out seven."

Also from MASNsports.com, Steve Melewski reports on the "State of the Orioles" address given by President of Baseball Operations Andy MacPhail:

"MacPhail was asked about Rhyne Hughes, the player the O's got today as the player to be named later for Gregg Zaun.

AM - "We were able to finish that deal today and acquire a left-handed hitting first baseman that was with Tampa's Triple-A club named Rhyne Hughes. He went to the Fall League last fall and was at Double-A and Triple-A this year. Between the two he's hitting about .285 with 22 home runs and 72 RBI and 30 doubles. He's kind of a late bloomer. We had two scouts see him recently and we think he has a chance to be a productive player."

Peter Schmuck of The Baltimore Sun believes the O's still have plenty to play for this season:

"What you are going to see at Oriole Park is a team going in two directions at the same time. The youth movement is going full steam ahead, with many of the top minor league prospects already here and - for the most part—holding their own. The veteran nucleus of the team, meanwhile, has seemed for the past month as if it's ready to pack up and go home."

Dan Connolly of The Sun writes a heartfelt story regarding third base prospect Josh Bell and the memory of his late father:

"There's no coincidence that the body art memorializing Bruce Bell - the cross, the halo, the angel wings, the doves and the clouds - adorns the entire right arm of the Orioles' newly anointed third baseman of the future.

Bell threw 90 mph in practice as a high school sophomore. Scouts still rave about the cannon attached to his right shoulder.

And so Bell, who has lost count of his tattoos, believed there was no better place to honor the man who had sacrificed so much for him.

"I felt like the right side was the spot for it," Bell said. "It's my dominant side. And I want him on my dominant side."

Zach Wilt of the Baltimore Sports Report wonders what's going on with the Birds:

"So what’s wrong in Birdland? Granted the pitching has been bad.
The Orioles lead the AL in homeruns allowed with 144 and their team ERA is over five on the current homestand.

They aren’t hitting well with runners in scoring position, .163 over the last five games, but the numbers still favor them winning.

In their 26 games since the break they have held the lead in 15 of those games.

So to answer my question, I have no idea what’s wrong in Birdland.

Are they lacking that killer instinct?
Could they use a winning veteran to mentor these young guys?
Is Baltimore under performing?

Sorry, I don’t have an answer for you."

Bleacher Report's Dean Hybl posts five key questions regarding the Orioles:

"As the Baltimore Orioles complete another disappointing season and prepare for 2010, there are five key questions that team president Andy MacPhail must answer."

Baltimore Orioles: Did Angels' Mike Scioscia Really Get Angry at Felix Pie?

On Friday, Aug. 14, part-time outfielder Felix Pie accomplished something that only three Orioles had done previously before: Hit for the cycle.

After rounding second base en route to history, he sped to third and slid in, unaware of the task he had just accomplished.

Third base coach Juan Samuel then gave him the news.

"I didn't know I hit for the cycle," Pie said. "Juan Samuel tell me and I say, 'Wow, really?' It's exciting."

Indeed this must have been an exciting time for the 24-year-old former top prospect. After seeing his Major League career fail miserably in Chicago, he came to Baltimore looking for an opportunity.

He was given one early in the year, receiving starts on a day-to-day basis; however, his statistics were not overpowering. With his average hovering around the .200 mark, he slowly made his way to the bench as a new road was paved for the callup of rookie Nolan Reimold.

Now as a fourth outfielder, Pie does not have the burden of worrying about losing his job. Now his job is to simply steal back what he once possessed.

So far, so good.

He is hitting .321 in 84 at-bats since May 10, and he appears to be growing more comfortable with each plate appearance. He attributes his recent success to hitting coach Terry Crowley.

"Every day I'm with Crowley, he's helped me a lot."

Crowley fired the praise straight back.

"That kid has worked every day in the tunnel," Crowley said. "Every day, without missing any time, he just comes in and works. And he went a long span without getting to play because other guys were playing good and stuff. But he just kept working and working. It's to his credit. We know he's got some ability, and tonight was a game he'll never forget."

Through all of this excitement, though, lurked a dark cloud. Pie himself addressed the issue after the contest had ended.

“I apologize to Mike Scioscia and the players on the other team," Pie said. "It's part of the game, emotion, but I showed too much.”

What is he apologizing for exactly?

When Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia walked to the mound to make a pitching change, he “stared him down” and “apparently got the message across that you don't show up the opposition with a huge lead” (Baltimore Sun).

So let me get this straight.

Scioscia, the well-renowned coach of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, got mad at a 24-year old kid having the game of his life?

Really?

After originally hearing the story, that was the first thought that came into my head.

So the kid gets excited at third base when he hits a triple to complete the cycle. This is the same kid who’s career has been hanging by a limb since his days in Chicago, and he looks as though he is currently on the rise. I do not see the problem.

To conclude, I only have two messages, one for Scioscia, and one for Pie.

To Scioscia: Get a grip. So your team got beat down by the last-place O’s. That is no reason to get angry at a part-time outfielder who gets excited for doing something that is rarely seen.

To Pie: Just keep doing what you’re doing. In my opinion, there was no need to apologize, for you did nothing of fault. Let this slide past you and never forget the day for what it truly was. Keep it up, kid.

Now can’t we all just get along?

Baltimore Orioles: When Should the Birds Promote Brandon Snyder?

Over the past year, Orioles’ fans have encountered several different debate topics regarding player call ups and minor league decisions.

After seeing rookies Nolan Reimold, Matt Wieters, Brad Bergesen, Jason Berken, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman, and David Hernandez arrive at the Major League level, a new name has risen from the fire of the O’s farm system.

Brandon Snyder, a 22-year old corner infielder, began the year at Double-A Bowie with the intent of making the big league club in time to see the O’s make a playoff run. We may be seeing him much sooner than that.

He hit for a .343 average with ten HRs, 45 RBI, 24 R, and a .421 OBP while with the Baysox, proving to Orioles’ management that he was ready for the next level.

He was promoted to the Triple-A Norfolk squad after 58 games, now replacing the offense lost by the promotions of Wieters, Reimold, and first baseman Oscar Salazar.

Like Wieters had done once he reached the Tides, Snyder had his struggles, with his average dropping down to the .200 mark early on. Also like the stud catcher, though, the young first baseman picked up his efforts.

Over his last ten contests, Snyder is totaling a .421 average with nine RBI and a stolen base, and overall, he is batting .280 with two HRs, 33 RBI, 26 R, three SBs, and a .333 OBP while facing Triple-A pitching.

With Snyder being considered by many as the Birds’ first baseman of the future (possibly the very near future), the main topic of discussion has finally arrived.

When should the Orioles call him up?

Looking at it from my point of view, I am projecting them to treat the youngster like they treated Wieters (Then again, I didn’t think we’d see Matusz until next season either, so who can really tell at this point?).

So with my prediction, I leave the rest of the O’s community with this question.

What do you guys think?

When do you feel would be the most appropriate time to see Snyder in an O’s uniform?

Only time will tell the true answer, but it is always nice to hear what the fans have to say.

What People Are Saying About the Baltimore Orioles (Aug. 9)

This is the fifth article of my weekly series "What People Are Saying about the Baltimore Orioles."

This week, the topics discussed ranged from an outside view on prospect Josh Bell to the Gregg Zaun deal, the Birds' 2010 potential saves leader, Jake Arrieta's struggles, and the second half of the season.

Let's see what people are saying.

1. MASNsports.com's Steve Melewski talks with De Jon Watson, the assistant general manager in charge of player development for the Los Angeles Dodgers, about third base prospect Josh Bell:

"He has big, raw power. I think it will be above average in time, and he has a chance to be a middle-of-the-order run producer. He's a good-looking young kid who makes great adjustments from at-bat to at-bat. He's a very competitive young man; the Orioles got a good player."

2. The Baltimore Sun's Peter Schmuck blogs about the recent Gregg Zaun trade:

"The move makes sense for one reason. It relieves manager Dave Trembley of the obligation to play Zaun twice a week and tell him in advance when he's going to play. He felt like he had to do that, but likely won't make any promises to returning backup Chad Moeller, who was elevated from Triple-A Norfolk. Moeller is a pure backup, so he'll play when needed. He'll still probably get a start or two a week, but [Matt] Wieters is the clear No. 1 now."

3. Also from The Baltimore Sun, Dan Connolly asks his readers, "Who will lead the 2010 Orioles in saves?":

"Johnson certainly has the stuff to take on the role, but he hasn’t done it since high school.

"Chris Ray has struggled in his return from Tommy John surgery but is looking better now. And pitchers are usually better in the second season after elbow surgery.

"Kam Mickolio has nasty stuff and is 10 feet tall, so he would certainly strike an imposing figure in the ninth.

"Cla Meredith has a funky delivery and is a tested late-inning guy.

"And my wild card is Koji Uehara, who has been a closer previously in Japan."

4. Zach Wilt of the Baltimore Sports Report believes the second half of this season could be one of the most important halves in the last decade:

"Don’t be fooled by the Orioles. Their second half might not mean jack to anyone in the East or the AL altogether, but this may be one of the most important second halves Baltimore has been a part of in over a decade. They’re not going to win the division, they’re not going to win a wild card, I don’t even think they’ll finish .500. But their finish this season is incredibly important."

5. Bleacher Report's Isaac Barrow encourages fans not to worry about starter Jake Arrieta's recent struggles:

"So should we think there's no way Arrieta doesn't turn it around?

"No, we shouldn't; it'd be foolish to say that.

"But at the same time, Arrieta is making adjustments at the Triple-A level. As stated, he has the intangibles that ERA, WHIP, and H/9 IP don't represent that all successful pitchers have.

"He also is learning on the job, so give the kid time. He's shown the ability to rebound throughout his minor league career, and I don't see this minor league stop as any different."

6. Jeff Wolfson of MASNsports.com posted an entry here at B/R, as he discussed the Zaun deal:

"I like Zaun and thought he saved Baltimore a few runs with his ability to keep balls in the dirt in front of him. His defensive prowess has helped the Orioles pitching staff stay confident about throwing balls 59 feet or buzzing a batter up and in. He even had an unaffordable option for next season, or an option buyout.

"With all that said, this is what Zaun going to Tampa means: Wieters getting more time to play. Wieters, according to manager Dave Trembley, will now play six days a week. This is roughly 130 games per season, which I think is average for a starting catcher. What else does Zaun being traded to Tampa mean? It means that Chad Moeller will now back up Wieters."

Baltimore Orioles: With Zaun Gone, Matt Wieters Can Improve as a Catcher

Ever since fans first caught sight of rookie phenom Matt Wieters in a Baltimore Orioles’ uniform, manager Dave Trembley has continually exhibited an annoying trend.

Once the young catcher has a good day at the plate, Trembley replaces him the next day with veteran Gregg Zaun.

I’m sure many other spectators can agree.

Well, O’s fanatics do not have to worry anymore.

Yesterday, backstop Gregg Zaun was picked up by the Tampa Bay Rays for a reported player to be named later.

Now the main question has to be asked: Will Wieters receive playing time on a daily basis now that Zaun is gone?

According to reports, the Birds will be calling up Chad Moeller from the minors in the upcoming days, bringing another backup catcher to the squad to provide Wieters with the occasional day off.

So will this deal affect the rookie’s time logged behind the plate?

According to Trembley, he said the trade "will allow Wieters to catch a little more and really take over the staff.” This is always a good sign for a kid who many fans and analysts alike are projecting to be the future leader of a rebuilding franchise.

With Wieters getting more reps behind the plate, we see him slowly but surely developing for the future.

The extra playing time will allow him to learn to call a better game, get a feel for the up-and-coming young starting staff, and even improve his growing defensive skills.

As for Moeller, expect to see him take the starting job whenever rookie pitcher Chris Tillman takes the mound, as he has credited the veteran with helping him improve his changeup, a pitch not yet in his arsenal only two seasons ago.

So for Orioles’ fans, this trade should be another in order to benefit the future for the Birds. With Wieters improving every day, we now begin to see the future contending franchise take shape.

This move is just one step closer to success.

Baltimore Orioles' Melvin Mora Feels He Is Being "Disrespected"

It appears as though the O’s have another veteran issue with the club.

The longest tenured Oriole on the 2009 squad, third baseman Melvin Mora has made himself clear to the public. His feelings for the Birds are ones of “disrespect.”

"I don't appreciate the disrespect, because I've been playing hurt for a guy who won't respect you. I don't deserve it," said Mora. "Whatever he [Dave Trembley] wants to do, he can do it. But like I told you before, I need to have my respect. This is not a guy who just came to the Orioles. This is a guy who's been here for nine years busting his butt for the organization."

The reasons for Mora’s frustration stem from manager Dave Trembley benching the veteran in three of the past four games, and now the player who had accepted his role on the team in the past has finally vented his frustration.

"I'm a competitor," Mora said. "I don't like to be here and [I'm] just thinking about in October [how] I'm going to go on vacation. ... I know here they're rebuilding and they bring a lot of young guys here, good players, and I know it's time for me to move on."

Analyzing what Mora had to say, all I can think of is one simple word: “Honestly?”

The corner infielder has done his job over his nine-year tender with the Birds, including a whopping .340 batting average in 2004, two All-Star Game appearances (2003 and 2005), and even a late resurgence in 2008 that put his name back on the map.

This season, however, is an entirely different story.

He is currently hitting for a .256 average with three HRs, 27 RBI, 26 R, and three SBs. All of these statistics come from a man who has retained the starting job at the “hot corner” for the entire season thus far.

All of this comes from someone who was placed in the number five spot in the batting order for the majority of the ‘09 campaign.

To put it simply: Trembley has benched him for a reason. The man is not hitting.

There is no reason to give respect when one has not done something lately to be respected.

Mora needs to understand this.

In his nine years, Birds’ fans have seen no winning seasons, and instead, we watch the growth of a new, talented young franchise.

Even Mora himself embraced the youth movement in the offseason. Now he shuns it away.

So why does Mora lash out when he knows he is truly the one to blame?

At this point, no one (possibly not even Mora himself) knows for sure.

"When you do that, especially with a guy who's been here for nine years, tried to save your butt and played hard, I think that's not respect. I always speak up. I never hide nothing and I'm an honest man, and that's the way I do it. I cannot control whatever lineup is put up there. The only thing I can control is just respect me. ... That's it."

Now he is telling the fans he won’t be an Oriole next year (I know plenty of Birds’ fanatics just jumped for joy after hearing that).

"I'm never going to forget the Orioles and whatever's going to happen next year -- next year I'm going to be with somebody else -- I'm an Oriole," he said. "The last few years, I played through injury. I played the first half [last year] with a bone sticking through my nerve and ... I came back and tried to play hard for Trembley and to try to give everything I've got for the second half. Now this year, I think I deserve more respect than what I've been getting."

Being an O’s fan who has watched him grow from a utility outfielder to a starting third baseman in Charm City, all I have to say is, “Thank you for your time Melvin, but the attitude is not welcome anymore. Good luck to you and I hope you can play for another four years like you intend to. Hopefully another club will give you an opportunity. When you leave the Birds, though, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”

What People Are Saying about the Baltimore Orioles (Aug. 2)

This is the fourth article of my weekly series "What People Are Saying about the Baltimore Orioles."

This week, all the rage is revolving around the potential call up of top pitching prospect Brian Matusz for this coming Tuesday's start against the Detroit Tigers. Let's see what people are saying about the Birds.

MASNsports.com's Roch Kubatko reports that there is a good chance Matusz will be called up on Tuesday:

"I've been given a very strong indication that Matusz is coming up, so I'm running with it. He began the day 7-0 with a 1.59 ERA in seven starts with the Baysox, with 30 hits allowed, 10 walks and 45 strikeouts in 45 1/3 innings. Opponents were batting .188 against him."

Also from MASNsports.com, Steve Melewski gives a thumbs up for a Matusz promotion:

"I don't have a vote, but in this blog I do. I sign off big time on that move.

And, it's not just because I've seen him pitch three or four times in person this year and his stuff has looked great. It's because his maturity and poise appear off the charts as well.

Matusz can handle it. Plus, his pitches sure look Major League quality."

Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun writes that there is a "strong possibility" we see Matusz next week:

"But it is now, according to MacPhail, "a strong possibility" that the Orioles will scrap their original timeline and promote last year's top draft pick, left-hander Brian Matusz, to pitch Tuesday in Detroit.

No decision has been officially made, but Matusz, 22, was pulled after pitching one inning for Double-A Bowie in the front end of Saturday's doubleheader at New Britain (Conn.). When asked if that meant Matusz would definitely pitch Tuesday for the Orioles, MacPhail added, "It's a 'We are keeping open our options,' but, yes, that is a strong possibility."

Zach Wilt of BaltimoreSportsReport.com weighs in on the Matusz callup:

"I’m no general manager, but promoting Matusz seems to go against the plan the Orioles have instilled since Andy MacPhail’s arrival in Baltimore.

If the Orioles want to fill a spot in the rotation they can do so with any number of Norfolk’s starters. Chris Waters would fit that role perfectly. But, if MacPhail believes this is Matusz’s time, then I will sat back and watch as a fan and enjoy seeing the story unfold."

I love what MacPhail has done with this organization, I respect his vision, and believe it will bring success. If Brian Matusz does start on Tuesday I hope that it is a part of MacPhail’s plan and that it isn’t due to a lack of performance from the O’s starting rotation.

Bleacher Report's Allen Pope gives his thoughts on the decision to call up the 22-year old southpaw:

"This consideration to call-up Matusz so soon comes as a surprise. When questioned this year about his elite prospect, team president Andy McPhail had said that he would not see action in the big leagues this season. However, today he said it's a "strong possibility" that he would be considered to be promoted in place of Bergesen."

The George Sherrill Deal Helps Baltimore Orioles in More Ways Than One

“Andy MacPhail, president of baseball operations, said he had "mixed emotions" in announcing today's trade. He hates to lose George Sherrill, a valued member of the organization who's been solid on and off the field, but "there comes a time when you have to try to address some needs going down the road and try to get that group of talent together for a long time, and we think that's what this trade represents."

Above is an excerpt taken from MASNsports.com’s “School of Roch”, as Roch Kubatko interviewed Baltimore Orioles’ President of Baseball Operations Andy MacPhail.

MacPhail had much to say on the George Sherrill-to-the-Dodgers deal, including praise for newly-acquired prospects Steve Johnson and Josh Bell, who will take over as the team’s new closer, and how he was able to grab such a haul from the Dodgers for a “lefty specialist” (as many contending teams viewed him).

What the man who has turned a Baltimore franchise around over the past two seasons left out were the key details.

This deal aids the Birds of Charm City in more ways than one.

Looking at the bargain the O’s received in this trade, we see Josh Bell, a 22-year-old third baseman with the ability to switch-hit and bat for power. With the Orioles’ current drought of third base prospects in the system, adding a talented young prospect to the mix is always a welcome sign.

Steve Johnson, son of former Oriole Dave Johnson, is one who MacPhail describes as “somewhat of an under-the-radar starter for the Dodgers who continues to get better."

At 6’1", Johnson projects as a future back-end-of-the-rotation starter/bullpen reliever, and with the way he has progressed this season (9-5, 3.61 ERA, 117 Ks), his father could see him in Camden Yards some time in 2010.

Now sure, the two players we received are all fine-and-dandy, but now we take a look at the big picture.

This deal allows the O’s to set up for the future now more than ever.

With Bell in the organization, the search for a third baseman has now been put on hold, as starter Melvin Mora is as good as gone after the 2009 season. His club option is not likely to be picked up with Wigginton on the roster, paving the way for the birth of a younger, more talented infield.

With Bell’s arrival paved for either late 2010 or early 2011, many fans should expect to see “pop” from both corners of the diamond, with first baseman Brandon Snyder aiming for an early ‘10 callup.

It’s going to be fun in Baltimore.

But now it only gets better.

Looking at the bullpen, it is, indeed, sad to see the Birds lose a quality southpaw in the late innings; however, this allows the squad to bring someone else back from the minors. This man accompanied Sherrill from Seattle.

His name is Kam Mickolio.

The young reliever was perfect in his short stint in the bigs, as no runner reached first base with him on the rubber.

After the O’s dealt utility-man Oscar Salazar to the San Diego Padres for reliever Cla Meredith, Mickolio’s roster spot was taken up, and he was sent back down to Triple-A Norfolk where he originally began.

Now it appears as though he’s coming back.

This time, though, forget being a middle reliever.

With Sherrill gone, the team needs a new closer, and former setup man Jim Johnson is the likely candidate to fill the ninth inning void.

This opens a spot in the eighth inning.

Who else but a perfect reliever to take his place?

Looking back on this deal, it appears to be another genius move by Andy MacPhail.

The Erik Bedard trade is just a gift that keeps on giving, and AM (as we O’s fans call him) has done everything in his power to improve the best farm system in baseball.

With the additions of Bell and Johnson, this system just got even better.

Now I’m just wondering if I’ll ever wake up from this dream, where the O’s appear to be heading for a bright new horizon.

This sure beats the old days of Palmeiro and Sosa, I’ll tell you that much.

My Message to Baltimore Orioles Prospect Chris Tillman: Go Get 'Em Tiger

I wish to start this piece from the perspective of a prospect’s eyes.

Over the years, I have gone through much in my minor league career. At 21-years old, I have been dealt from Seattle to Baltimore, both places where I have established myself as a top pitching prospect. After going 9-6 with a 2.70 ERA this year, the Baltimore Orioles organization has finally made the decision to put me in a big league uniform.

The key is to go out and do my best. A win would always be nice.

So I wonder who I’m up against in my MLB debut...

Chris Tillman, the Orioles’ top pitching prospect, has now been called up from Triple-A Norfolk to begin his big league career.

He will be facing a weak-hitting offense in Kansas City, so picking up the “W” in his big-league debut shouldn’t be a problem, right?

Not so fast.

On the opposing hill this Wednesday will be the MLB leader in earned run average. Zack Greinke (10-6) leads baseball with a 2.04 ERA, and he will get the call against the Orioles' prized prospect.

The first word to come from my lips when I read this was one I‘m sure many O‘s fans uttered: “Really?”

After watching four-out-of-four rookies win their first major league starts, we see the first true test of confidence for a youngster. What better way to either help (or hurt) a young man’s self-esteem by sending him up against a Cy Young candidate in his debut.

This is going to be a fun one.

Tillman, predominantly known as a strikeout pitcher, will have to go into Wednesday’s matchup with one mindset: Go out and do your best.

The Royals’ lineup is not one to be feared, so in order to maintain his composure, he must throw strikes and allow the defense to play behind him. I know, I know. This is easier said than done.

But one thing is certain. Greinke is out there to take his 11th victory, and the only thing standing in his way is a slumping Birds’ offense and a rookie starter getting his first taste of the limelight that will surround him as long as he puts on a uniform each day.

Greinke will not show mercy.

Therefore, it is now Tillman’s job to go out and take this one home for the O’s. As if there wasn’t enough pressure on him already.

From a managerial point of view, the decision to start Tillman on Wednesday can go either way.

He wins, and he has more confidence then ever before.

He loses, and we’re looking at a bad start to a promising young career.

That’s why my message to Tillman is this: Keep your composure. Win or lose, this is a challenge, and you just happened to face it on your first day on the job.

Now go get ‘em tiger, and make us O’s fans proud for the future.

What People Are Saying About The Baltimore Orioles (July 26)

This is the fourth article of my weekly series "What People are Saying about the Baltimore Orioles."

This week, the topics consist of the Birds' hunt for Sano, the Tillman callup, a rejected deal, and more. Let's find out what people had to say.

Steve Melewski of MASNsports.com reports that the O's "expressed interest" in Miguel Sano becoming an Oriole:

"Orioles director of international scouting, John Stockstill, is back from the Dominican Republic tonight. In recent days he has met with the representatives for Dominican shortstop Miguel Angel Sano.

"We certainly expressed an interest in him becoming a Baltimore Oriole," Stockstill said."

The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec writes that the O's are expected to call up 21-year old pitching prospect Chris Tillman on Wednesday:

"Orioles manager Dave Trembley wouldn't officially announce Tillman as Wednesday's pitcher, but he said the club will call up somebody from the minors to make that start and who it is won't come as a surprise. It has been speculated for weeks that the major league debut of Tillman, who is 8-6 with a 2.70 ERA for Triple-A Norfolk, is imminent."

96.3 The Big Jab in Portland, ME had former O's GM Jim Beattie on this week, and he discussed a deal bringing Mike Lowell and A.J. Burnett to the Birds in 2005. This deal, however, was shot down by team owner Peter Angelos. You can hear the entire broadcast here.

Bleacher Report's Isaac Barrow believes Nick Markakis is proving he deserved his 6-year extension:

"However, Markakis is the ultimate package. This year, "experts" claim he is having a bad year. Oh really? 11 homers, 63 RBI, a .297 average, 11 outfield assists, a .353 on base percentage, 29 doubles, and 41 extra base hits hardly warrant a bad year. In fact, Markakis, surprisingly enough, has the most RBI for any full time right fielder.

He has more RBI than NL All Stars Jayson Werth and Brad Hawpe, and other solid right fielders such as Justin Upton, Ryan Ludwick, Andre Ethier, Shin-Soo Choo, Matt Kemp, Nelson Cruz, and Alex Rios. He also leads baseball in outfield assists (11).

What a horrendous year he's having. I mean, why would you award this kid with a six-year extension? It's not as if he's going to provide average, production, or defense. Right?"

B/R's Lawrence Barreca (me) writes about the Orioles' outfield arms:

"Whether it be rookie Nolan Reimold in left, 23-year old Adam Jones in center, or the recently signed Nick Markakis in right, one thing is for certain: I highly suggest not trying to advance a base when these guys have the ball in their hands."

Dean Hybl of Bleacher Report writes how the Orioles' offense needs to provide the young pitchers with support:

"Little could help the confidence of a young pitcher more than having his offense provide some early runs and allow him to settle into a groove. That certainly was the case for Bergesen early in the season and would be helpful to Tillman and the other young hurlers as they look to gain experience at the major league level.

The long-term success of the Orioles is betting on these young pitchers taking the Birds back to the days when they could bank on a quality start every night.

If they are going to be successful, the Orioles also need to hearken back to another trait of the great Baltimore teams of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, consistent offensive production."

The Baltimore Orioles Have Yet Another Trio of Young Arms

In the Baltimore Orioles organization, three names stand out in the minor leagues. Each one has individually aided in placing the tag of “No. 1 farm system in baseball” on the Birds.

This trio consists of lefty Brian Matusz and righties Chris Tillman and Jake Arrieta.

Matusz, the Orioles 2008 first-round draft pick, has been lights-out in 2009, going 10-2 with a 2.06 ERA and 114 strikeouts.

Many, including myself, believe this young southpaw is the future ace of staff in Birdland, as his ability to command all four of his pitches has drawn comparisons to 2008 World Series MVP Cole Hamels.

Tillman, the youngest of the bunch at 21, has also made his mark with the Norfolk Tides. Thus far this season, he is 8-6 with a 2.70 ERA and 99 strikeouts.

He is the closest to reaching the big league level out of the three, as many are anticipating the 6’5 righty’s callup next week against Kansas City.

Finally, we have Jake Arrieta. Arrieta, who many scouts believe could have the most potential out of the Cavalry, has flown slightly under the radar that Matusz and Tillman have created; however, his efforts have not gone unnoticed.

He is 9-7 so far, maintaining a 3.35 ERA and recording 113 strikeouts. Many fans are hoping to see him get the call to the bigs some time in August.

While we speak about when we will finally see these three names on the back of an Orioles’ uniform, there are three young, live arms already in the Birds’ clubhouse.

So who are they?

Here’s a clue: They are not pitchers.

In fact, the O’s are showcasing the power arms of several young stars as we speak.

They all currently reside in the outfield of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Whether it be rookie Nolan Reimold in left, 23-year old Adam Jones in center, or the recently signed Nick Markakis in right, one thing is for certain: I highly suggest not trying to advance a base when these guys have the ball in their hands.

This group currently leads the American League in outfield assists with 23, and star of the show Nick Markakis leads all MLB fielders with 11.

So do you want to try to run on them now?

If you still think you can pull it off, let’s take a look at some of these youngsters’ brightest moments with the glove.

We take Nolan Reimold against the White Sox for example. With runners on first and second, rookie Chris Getz lined a base hit into left field. Paul Konerko, the team’s starting first baseman, tried to score. This did not work out so well.

Another instance comes from Adam Jones. With none out and no one on, Chone Figgins of the Los Angeles Angels came to the plate against former Oriole Jamie Walker.

Figgins laced a liner over Jones’ head in center, and he had triple in his brain from the moment it left the bat. Not in this outfield, bud.

Jones quickly made the strong throw to shortstop Cesar Izturis, who relayed the ball to third baseman Melvin Mora for the out.

And how could we leave out the play that Nick Markakis made just last night against Boston.

With leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury on second base and two out, second baseman Dustin Pedroia lined a ball into Markakis country. The O’s right fielder then made a line-drive throw to the plate to deny the speedster of a run.

So as we can see, the Baltimore Orioles have another trio of young arms in their system.

Sometimes you just have to look away from the mound to find them.

Baltimore Orioles: Oscar Salazar Dealt to Padres for Reliever Meredith

Formerly known as a key bench player for the Baltimore Orioles, super-utility man Oscar Salazar will be heading for the West Coast in the near future.

Recently, the San Diego Padres dealt relief pitcher Cla Meredith to the O’s for Salazar, adding an extra arm to the bullpen for the Birds.

Before we take an in-depth look at this deal, let us first glance at the man the Orioles got in return.

Meredith, a submarine-style pitcher who Andy MacPhail calls “a poor man’s Chad Bradford”, appeared in 153 games for the Padres between the ‘07 and ‘08 seasons. In ‘06, he set the franchise’s rookie record with 28 consecutive scoreless appearances.

This season, he is 4-2 with a 4.17 ERA, 13 walks, and 20 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings.

Now here’s the scary part.

So far this year, batters are hitting for a solid .324 average against him.

Want me to freak you O’s fans out a little more?

Over the past three seasons, opponents have batted a respective .296, .290, and this year’s .324 against him.

To put it simply, the guy is a ground-ball pitcher that opposing hitters love to take their hacks against. That is always nice to know.

Time to analyze the deal.

So the O’s give up a man who can play first base, third base, and even some shortstop. They trade away a .419 hitter with power and came through in the clutch. They did all of this for a “poor man’s Chad Bradford”.

So this is a bad thing, right?

Not necessarily.

Looking more into this trade, we can see one intriguing situation. Does this deal set up a potential George Sherrill or Danys Baez swap?

Thus far, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have had their interests in the team’s closer, and Baez is sure to grab attention from a contending program. Maybe this deal has its benefits after all.

Looking from a different point of view, if one of the two relievers previously named is not dealt, then young reliever Kam Mickolio would have to be sent back down to Triple-A Norfolk. This would seem unfair, as Mickolio has yet to allow a hit in the ‘09 campaign. But like our parents have always told us, “Life isn’t fair.” How true.

All-in-all, one thing is for certain: No one knows for sure what the O’s front office plans to make of this deal.

Is their another big trade looming?

Is the 26-year old Meredith a keeper on the big league roster?

Hopefully, these answers will be provided over the next few days.

Before we end this piece; however, I just wanted to thank Oscar Salazar for his services as an O.

You were a great pinch-hitter, and I hope you have success in San Diego!

What People Are Saying About the Baltimore Orioles (July 18)

This is the third article of my new weekly series "What People are Saying about the Baltimore Orioles."

For this week, the main headlines consisted of possible trade bait, a youngster making his pro debut, and second-half predictions for 2009. Let's see what people are saying.

Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com says the Mets and Phillies are both interested in bench player Oscar Salazar:

"Hernandez is slated to pitch Monday at the new Yankee Stadium. The Orioles need to make room on the 25-man roster, and they're convinced that Salazar and Felix Pie will be claimed if exposed to waivers.

I'm hearing that the Yankees, Mets and Phillies are three of the teams interested in Salazar."

Another person chimed in from MASNsports.com this week. Buck Martinez says that center fielder Adam Jones is "an All-Star in more ways than one":

"The Orioles need to be commended on the acquisition of Jones in the Bedard deal for a couple of reasons. They got a young, athletic centerfielder who will be a fixture for years to come as the face of the organization, both as a player and also as a person. He has class and character that should make Orioles fans proud to say "Adam Jones is an Oriole."

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Jones might be the most important acquisition since Frank Robinson."

The Baltimore Sun's Dean Jones Jr. reports that 2009 first-round pick Matt Hobgood could make his pro debut on July 19 with Bluefield:

"Orioles first-round draft pick Matt Hobgood will pitch one or two innings in his professional debut, which is expected to take place Saturday night when Rookie-level Bluefield hosts Johnson City at Bowen Field."

Zach Wilt of BaltimoreSportsReport.com writes about the O's 2nd-half goals for 2009. Of those goals, one mentioned is to win on the road:

"The O’s are 24-21 at Camden Yards and 14-27 away from home. The West Coast has killed them. 2009 is all about proving you’re ready to win in 2010; that starts with putting together some “W’s” away from home."

Brian Shephard of mlbtraderumors.com writes about potential trade bait for the Birds. One of the names on his list is closer George Sherrill:

"George Sherrill "has been the most popular target." The Orioles have him under control for two more years and are looking for a pitcher with "closer" value in return."

Bleacher Report's Zachary Ball writes about prospects that are "soaring (or sliding)" in July. Here's what he had to say regarding outfield prospect Billy Rowell:

"For the season, Rowell is hitting a paltry .230, with eight home runs and 31 RBI—not anywhere near inspiring numbers. May I suggest a demotion to Delmarva, where this kid can finally gain some confidence?"

B/R's Dean Hybl runs through five key players for the second half of '09. One of the players named is starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie:

"However, this season he has struggled from the very beginning. In 18 starts, Guthrie has allowed three or more runs 15 times and pitched seven or more innings only five times.

As the Orioles look to give their young pitchers a chance to prepare for full-time duty in 2010, Guthrie needs to re-establish himself as the leader of the staff by going out there every start and piling up the quality starts like he did over the last two seasons."

In Baltimore, Number 52 Is For the Big Boys

Whether it be on the man set out to doom opposing offensive players with crushing blows or a guy sent out to the pitchers' mound to close out a ball game, one thing is for certain: The number 52 has its image implanted in Baltimore sports fans' minds.

These two men, linebacker Ray Lewis of the Ravens and closer George Sherrill of the Orioles, have striking similarities. Though they play two separate sports, their mindsets and value to their respective teams is immense, and the fans have accepted both as key roles on each squad.

Taken in the 1996 NFL Draft, Ray Lewis was described as small.

Does anyone wish to stand up and say that now?

This 10-time pro bowler and future hall-of-famer has done his share during his time in a Ravens' uniform, recording 1,637 tackles, 33.5 sacks, 28 INTs, two defensive TDs, and a safety. He has been regarded as one of the most feared linebackers of all time, being named in the same sentence as the mighty Lawrence Taylor.

His ability to command a defense has been praised for years now, with many fans and analysts alike placing the title of "General" on him. Under his leadership, the Ravens’'defense has finished with the best in all of football since their historic Super Bowl victory in 2000.

Sherrill can be described in the same sense.

Though having never been regarded as small, Sherrill has done only one thing this season for the Birds: Close out ballgames.

His 20 saves in 2009 ranks him fifth in the American League, putting him in the elite class of closers for the season. He falls just short of Jonathan Papelbon, Brian Fuentes, Joe Nathan, and Mariano Rivera (All were All-Stars, I might add.).

Many believe "Flat Breezy" (as many fans call him) to be trade bait as the deadline approaches; however, one offer from the Marlins has already been rejected, and it appears as though Sherrill will be remaining in an O's uniform throughout the season.

To compare, though he may not have the historical impact of Lewis, Sherrill does bring one main component to the table. He brings someone to trust when the game is on the line. Like Lewis, the O's closer is called upon late in the contest to shut down the opposing offense as his team rides his shoulders to victory.

That, my friends, is their greatest comparison.

So whether or not you think it, the number 52 has made its mark on Baltimore sports as of late.

For now, we all hope these two names can bring the Birds of Charm City back to a world championship.

Baltimore Orioles' Grade for the First Half of the 2009 Season

Before the 2009 season, several fans tagged the upcoming campaign as a “throw-away year." A year in which the Birds would not compete, let alone leave a dent in the AL East standings.

There was one primary goal: Get the rookies’ feet wet.

With the arrivals of star catcher Matt Wieters, long-time outfield prospect Nolan Reimold, 2008 Minor League Pitcher of the Year Brad Bergesen, starters Jason Berken, David Hernandez, and former Mariner prospect Kam Mickolio; the O’s have done just that. Fans and analysts alike argue that the Orioles could have several Rookie of the Year candidates, with the first three youngsters listed being the leaders of the pack.

Wieters has now assumed the role as starting catcher, Reimold the starting left fielder, and Bergesen the ace of the Baltimore staff. It is clear to many that the Birds have a bright future ahead, and with starters Chris Tillman, Jake Arrieta, and Troy Patton set to arrive later in the season—that future could be sooner rather than later.

Looking outside the window of the youngsters’ individual successes, we must glance at the new arrivals who made their way to Baltimore before the season began.

Three names have made their presences known as of late. Shortstop Cesar Izturis has proved why he is a former Gold Glove Award Winner. Utility-infielder Ty Wigginton is beginning to show flashes of the success he achieved while with the Houston Astros. Even starter-turned-reliever Mark Hendrickson has turned his season around (Over his last ten appearances, he has gone 12 1/3 innings, giving up two ER, recording 12 Ks and 3 BBs).

On the flip side, several names have disappointed since joining the squad.

Former Cubs’ top prospects Rich Hill and Felix Pie have had their ups-and-downs, with Hill recording a 6.92 ERA and Pie no longer receiving starts in left. Also, Koji Uehara is now out until September, killing his chances of furthering his impact with the big league club. One final name to remember is Adam Eaton (A shiver just went down my spine). After one quality start, the O’s were forced to release the struggling veteran, making way for the up-and-coming youngsters to assume their roles in the rotation.

After looking at the newcomers, we must take a peek at those who have been in Birdland before. Outfielders Nick Markakis and Adam Jones have been fantastic yet again in ‘09, as Markakis has racked up 57 RBI by the All-Star break and Jones will be making his first ever All-Star appearance at the age of 23.

The veterans have not been as spectacular, with Brian Roberts’ batting average hovering around .275, Melvin Mora struggling to find the power stroke he possessed at the end of last season, and first baseman Aubrey Huff having his troubles just simply getting a hit to fall in.

For the rotation, Jeremy Guthrie is amongst the league-leaders in home runs allowed, and his 5.35 ERA has made me swipe the “ace” title away from him.

In the pen, George Sherrill has accumulated 20 saves, and Danys Baez has regained his form from early 2007. Setup man Jim Johnson is back to his ways of old, and Matt Albers has been fantastic since his return from Triple-A Norfolk. Life is good in the pen for now.

We cannot talk about the vets, though, without mentioning the breakout season Luke Scott is having. Acquired from the Astros last season in the 5-for-1 Miguel Tejada deal, Scott has been nothing short of spectacular as the team’s regular designated hitter, hitting .305 with 18 HR, 51 RBI, and 39 R.

All-in-all, it has been a year to remember for the O’s. Whether it be a 9-run comeback in the final two innings against Boston, or giving up four against the same team they clobbered just the night before in the ninth to take the loss—this squad has been a fun one to watch.

If I had to give the first half of the year a grade, I would stick with a C+. Being last in the AL East standings never helps your total points, but the fact that they have brought up the fruits of the future franchise is enough to make me smile.

Oh well, there’s always the second half.

Here’s to the Birds not breaking down in September!

Is Baltimore's Felix Pie a Trade Target for the Chicago White Sox?

Just a half season ago, the Baltimore Orioles dealt for 24-year old former top prospect Felix Pie in an effort to revitalize his broken career in Chicago.

He wasn't getting proper playing time with the Cubs, so many believed his potential went unnoticed and unused. Closing in on the All-Star Break with the Birds, one thing is certain—Felix Pie has proven to be nothing but a false hope once again.

He is hitting .234 with two HR, eight RBI, 14 runs, and a stolen base. He was given the opportunity to play every day at the start of the ‘09 campaign, and he failed to take advantage.

Instead, 25-year old rookie Nolan Reimold was given the chance of a lifetime, and has taken it in stride. The future outfield is now set with Reimold, Adam Jones, and Nick Markakis, leaving Pie rotting on the bench and taking up roster space.

So what does Andy MacPhail plan to do with him?

It wouldn't be smart just to let him test the waivers. The Orioles President of Baseball Operations has a different idea—he plans to test the trade market for the lifetime bust.

According to the Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec, one team that has shown interest in Pie is the Chicago White Sox. Josh Fields' name has popped up in trade talks, for the young corner infielder has now been permanently blocked off by rookie stud Gordon Beckham and veteran Paul Konerko.

From an O’s standpoint, Fields would be an excellent pickup. Let’s go further into this deal for a second.

The O’s trade Pie, someone who receives limited playing time and doesn’t have proper baseball instincts, for a third baseman with power potential.

Fields is currently hitting .230 with six HR, 26 RBI, 25 runs, and two stolen bases. He is a career .232 hitter; however, he showed in 2007 that with at-bats, he can produce. In ‘07, he hit .244 with 23 HR, 67 RBI, 54 runs, and a stolen base in 100 games.

Compared to the current decline of Orioles’ starting third baseman Melvin Mora, Fields appears to be a decent upgrade, especially with him being roughly 10 years younger than the aging veteran.

To fuel the fire, the Orioles need a future third baseman, and the next candidate could be youngster Brandon Waring at Single-A Frederick.

One could call it another Felix Pie situation with Fields. Trade for him, and start a new experiment.

If he works out, then Baltimore has a new future third baseman for when first baseman Brandon Snyder and “The Cavalry” of young pitching arrive in Birdland.

If it fails, then we can at least say we gave it an effort.

It’s a win-win deal for the Orioles, and this is a situation fans have been looking for since Reimold stole the show. If we could get anything for Pie, then we should take advantage. To say that we could grab a future third base candidate is unbelievable.

To MacPhail: Get this deal done. If the White Sox still have interest in this fourth outfielder, then by all means trade him away.

It’s about time we took the same road as the Cubs.

Felix Pie was nothing more than a top prospect, and I can guarantee you that revisiting Chicago will not revitalize his short career.

To the Orioles Front Office: Get him out while you still can.

Baltimore Orioles' Adam Jones Selected To All-Star Team

Amidst their current losing ways, a star burns bright in Camden Yards.

On Sunday, Baltimore Orioles' outfielder Adam Jones was named to the 2009 All-Star Game in St. Louis as a reserve. After seeing his name listed on the roster, all I could do was breathe a sigh of relief.

So far this season, Jones is hitting .308 with 12 HR, 46 RBI, 52 runs, and six SB. The 23-year-old can do it all, whether it be robbing Boston first baseman Kevin Youkilis of a home run, or hitting a bomb over the left field fence.

This All-Star game is the first of many for Jones, and he certainly appreciates the nod.

"I'm pretty thrilled about it," Jones said. "I didn't think I was going to go, but my mom always said she was praying for me and kept voting for me. I guess all her hard work paid off."

Speaking of his mother, if there has been anyone supporting Jones during his career, it’s been her.

Just take the occasional look at the Baltimore Sun, where she goes under the name “Jonesy10mom”. She recently wrote a post on the piece featuring her son. She said, “Do You Jonesy, DO YOU!!! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU! LOVE MOMMY!"

Even with all the turmoil going on with the Birds, that is one thing that makes you stop and smile.

Going back to Jones, there is one question that still remains: Will he be receiving a Markakis-type extension in the offseason?

All I can say is, if he can keep at his current pace, then I hope to see him with “Baltimore” written across his chest for a long time. I think the youngster would not mind that either.

"Being over here in Baltimore is a dream come true," said Jones.

"I think it's the best thing that happened to me and my career. Coming to a franchise that was rebuilding, and getting an opportunity to play every single day, that's all I ask."

"Over in Seattle, I wanted to play every day. I loved their franchise, but it didn't work out there, so I'm glad that I'm here. I was telling George, 'Now, they have two All-Stars that they traded away.'”

Now, if that doesn’t put a smile on your face, then you need to start drinking some of that orange Kool-Aid.

The future is coming, Birds fans.

Once the cavalry finally arrives, this squad will be a contender in the AL East, and Jones will be in the middle of it.

What People are Saying about the Baltimore Orioles—Jul. 3

This is the first article of my new weekly series "What People are Saying about the Baltimore Orioles".

Every week, I will scour the Web, looking for what analysts, writers, and fans alike think about the Birds. So keep putting out solid material, O’s fans, and you might find yourself in this week’s issue. Let’s check out the first installment.

Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports that the O’s will not sign 16-year-old shortstop prospect Miguel Sano in the immediate future.

"The international signing period began today, with teams allowed to reach contractual agreements with amateur free agents from Latin America. But Andy MacPhail, president of baseball operations, told me a few minutes ago that I shouldn't look for anything to happen in the immediate future."

Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun writes that starter Koji Uehara might be out until September. "Orioles pitcher Koji Uehara could be sidelined until September after an arthrogram revealed that his lingering elbow soreness is the result of a partially torn flexor tendon."

According to the Baltimore Sun, "Manager Dave Trembley announced Wednesday morning that Uehara will be shut down for up to five weeks, then embark on a throwing program that could extend his absence to eight weeks or more. It's possible Uehara won't return this season."

MLB.com writer Spencer Fordin says the Orioles will keep pitcher Brian Matusz in the minors: "Matusz, the fourth overall pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, started the year with Class A Frederick and went 4-2 with a 2.16 ERA and 75 strikeouts in his first 11 starts. Now, through three starts with Double-A Bowie, he's 3-0 with an 0.49 ERA."

The story states, "Despite his rapid success, the Orioles have no plan to promote Matusz to the big leagues this season. Matusz will likely sit at Bowie all year, which should set him up for an extended audition in Spring Training and a starting point at Triple-A Norfolk."

According to SBnation.com, closer George Sherrill could be an option for the Florida Marlins. "Sherrill could be a nice fit; the O's are definitely entertaining offers for him."

Foxsports.com’s Ken Rosenthal writes that the O’s may not want to deal Sherrill. "Losing teams generally place lower values on closers than contenders. Sherrill, though, helps stabilize a young Orioles staff that will only get younger as the team continues to promote its top pitching prospects."

"The Orioles, like most clubs in their position, are open to moving virtually any player at the right price. Rest assured, they will not sell low on Sherrill," Rosenthal writes.

Dean Hybl on Bleacher Report believes the Orioles must perform better on their West Coast trip. "Even if the West Coast trip doesn’t yield a lot of wins, what is more important is that the Orioles play better than they did on their previous trip."

Hybl continues, "If they can battle every night the way they did in their epic comeback against the Red Sox, then the wins will start taking care of themselves."

Bleacher Report’s Zachary Ball believes that starter Brad Bergesen is the new ace in "Charm City". "I think it's about time to hand over the label of 'staff ace' Jeremy Guthrie. Guthrie held that title last year, and wore the crown well, even if it is a little too thorny for the Stanford grad's liking. This year is clearly Bergesen's year. And what a rise it has been."

Baltimore Orioles: Do You Believe in Magic?

Whether it be a walk-off homer from rookie left fielder Nolan Reimold against the Toronto Blue Jays, a two-run comeback victory against Francisco Rodriguez and the Mets, a two-out, two-run bomb off the bat of Brian Roberts in Philadelphia, or an improbable ten-run comeback against the Boston Red Sox, one thing is for certain; the Baltimore Orioles are a team playing with heart.

As an O’s fan, it has now gotten to the point where one can no longer leave the television screen with two outs in the ninth. It would be a sin to even blink while down by five in the eighth inning. It would be immoral to turn away from the computer screen when all hope is lost.

Each and every night, the Orioles are a team to watch. I like to call them "The Weirdest Team in Baseball,” since you never know when they will pull off another miracle.

What happened on Tuesday night against Boston was incredible in its own right. Being down by nine runs in the seventh, the team went to work. They would score five runs before heading into the eighth, capped off by an Oscar Salazar home run.

In the bottom of the eighth, the team would come back to tack on five more, with Nick Markakis’ two-RBI double off of Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, inflicting the final blow. It was the largest comeback in Orioles’ history, and it came against a squad with one of the best bullpens in all of baseball.

Who would have thought the last place Birds could pull off such a fantasy? They beat the Sox, even while being down by nine runs in the seventh. Miracles are great, but the "Magic" is what’s really working.

“Orioles Magic” is back in Baltimore, as players and fans alike can recall the times of the cartoon bird and World Series Championships, as well as envision the bright future ahead.

With a core of young stars being born, the O’s are finally putting themselves back on the map. We are now just beginning to see what is in store in the future.

So, I leave you with a simple question now that there is O’s Magic in the air; can you feel it happen?

Baltimore Orioles: The Opportunity of a Lifetime for Robert Andino

This article originally appeared at the Baltimore Sports Report.

The dream began for shortstop Robert Andino on August 4, 2002, as he signed with the Florida Marlins and kicked off his minor league career.

He was expected to be the future at the middle-infield position, his stellar defense and slap-hitting style carrying him to the pros. This dream became a reality as he reached the majors in 2005; however, the fantasy for the youngster was soon to be a nightmarish career. On November 24, 2005, the Fish traded Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, and Guillermo Mota to the Red Sox for up-and-coming star Hanley Ramirez.

Ramirez became the new cornerstone for the Marlins’ infield, slowly evolving into the stud he is today. While his career was growing, Andino’s was standing still, waiting for the opportunity to be the starter to arise once again. This chance never came.

“I wasn’t angry. I know this game is a business,” Andino said. “Hanley was a good friend of mine, and he was doing his thing. I just felt like they had their shortstop, so why don’t they let me go when I’m still 21, 22 years old? Everything happens for a reason, and most of the time we don’t know why.”

Andino needed anything to get his profession back on its feet. For once, a shot came. On April 1, 2009, he found himself being dealt to Baltimore for former top-pitching prospect Hayden Penn. Instead of having to back up the best young shortstop in baseball, he would be the number two behind 29-year-old Gold Glove Award Winner Cesar Izturis. A much better situation to succeed, to say the least.

His playing time was on and off as the year progressed, with him batting number nine in most of the “Sunday lineups." His defense was shaky; his bat wasn’t producing. He needed a break. It’s incredible how life works, isn’t it?

Cesar Izturis would be placed on the 15-day disabled list due to an appendectomy, leaving the shortstop spot wide open for the taking. Andino would take full advantage of it. So far in 2009, he is hitting .258 with a HR, seven RBI, 13 R, two SB, and a .291 OBP. His defense has been flawless, including three solid plays against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Orioles’ Manager Dave Trembley said it best: “He's had an opportunity, and he’s made all the plays, contributed in some bat-control situations. He’s earned some playing time by what he’s done here.”

The real question to ask, though, is this: What will happen when Cesar returns?

It is believed that Izturis will be the starter again, with Andino receiving more at-bats than he had before the injury to the starting shortstop. It will be a blessing in disguise for the Birds, as having two solid options at the position is excellent compared to the five that shifted around last season.

Looking to the future, one can only believe that Andino has a great shot to be the future at the spot. With the O’s not having a definite name for the long-term, someone with major league experience always leads the pack, putting Andino right in the hunt to be there as “The Cavalry” arrives and the team morphs into a playoff-caliber program.

So, to conclude, what was once a meaningless trade turns into an incredible story. A shortstop looking for a window, only to see the shades closed, would finally watch the sun break through. He is now an Oriole, and he could be one for many years to come. This will all depend on his performance throughout 2009, but at least the chance is there.

“To have this chance, I never wanted anybody to get hurt,” Andino said. “But I count my blessings every day. I know a bunch of people would give [a lot] to be in my position.”

The Fantasy Baseball Week 12 Waiver Wire

This article was originally published at fantasypros911.com.

Week 12 is now upon us, as the All-Star game voting is heating up and fans begin deciding who will represent the teams in St. Louis. Many people like to refer to the special occasion as a “popularity contest,” as only the top-named players in baseball make the trip each year. Here on the waiver wire, though, we like to give some of the lesser-named men some notoriety. As always, each player’s availability at ESPN, Yahoo! Sports, and CBS Sports is displayed. So here is the Week 12 Waiver Wire.

Infielders:

Ryan Hanigan, C, CIN (ESPN- 0.5 percent owned) (Yahoo! Sports- 1 percent owned) (CBS Sports- 6 percent owned)

It is amazing how one injury can affect a team. In the Cincinnati Reds’ case, the entire situation stems from Joey Votto, the team’s starting first baseman. The youngster was placed on the 15-day disabled list with “personal issues,” and his return is unknown. This leaves a gaping hole on the right side of the infield, and manager Dusty Baker needs to find a way to fill it. So what is his solution? Stick the former starting catcher, Ramon Hernandez, over at first on occasion, leaving home plate currently unmanned. Here is where Hanigan comes in. Hanigan is now logging several more innings behind the plate, and his production continues to be impressive.

He is currently hitting .303 with a HR, eight RBIs, and 14 runs scored in 37 games for the Reds. ] As his playing time grows, so will his numbers. The real question for fantasy owners is this: What will happen to his value after Votto returns? One would automatically assume Hanigan out as the everyday catcher; however, I beg to differ. Comparing the offensive productions of both players, Hernandez hits for a lesser average (.244) with only four more HRs and 18 more RBIs than Hanigan. So what does this mean? If the 28-year old backstop can continue to perform at a high rate, Hernandez’ job may be in jeopardy. I suggest grabbing Hanigan as a bench catcher/injury replacement in mixed leagues, while he may make a solid starting option in deeper NL-only formats. Hopefully, Hanigan will be seeing plenty more playing time in the near future.

To read the entire waiver wire, click here.

Fantasy Baseball Week Eleven Waiver Wire

During this time of the year, many Major League Baseball owners are busy attempting to work out deals and scrolling through their options as the trade deadline slowly draws closer.

Fantasy baseball owners are in the same situation. With many solid options still floating around in waivers, people are looking for the best options to add to their squad, whether it be a superstar in disguise or a “hot” veteran for the bench.

Below are ten names that could prove to be useful as the season draws on. Looking at the list, each player’s availability at ESPN, Yahoo! Sports, and CBS Sports are displayed.

Now, without further adieu, here is the Week 11 Waiver Wire.

Infielders:

Gordon Beckham, 3B, CHW (ESPN- 4.4% owned) (Yahoo! Sports- 9% owned) (CBS Sports- 50% owned)

With the top two prospects in baseball having already joined the big league party, it was about time White Sox’ prospect Gordon Beckham received his call-up.

Over his minor league career, Beckham hit for a .326 batting average, with four homeruns, 25 RBI, 29 runs scored, two stolen bases, a .378 OBP, and a .904 OPS. Since his Thursday debut, Beckham is hitting for a measly .100 average, but don't be concerned.

As he matures, the young shortstop will slowly develop into a top-of-the-lineup threat, especially with hitters Carlos Quentin, Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko, A.J. Pierzynski, and Alexei Ramirez around him.

Another aspect that attracts owners to the infielder is his eligibility. He is currently listed as a third baseman and shortstop, allowing people to shift their respective lineups in order to have his bat contributing on a daily basis.

The real question mark fans have is his power. There was surely a lack of it in 45 games of farm ball; however, 49 long balls in three years at Georgia can certainly turn some heads.

Other than this, it appears as though Beckham will be a stud in due time.

My best advice to a fantasy owner is this: If he’s available (which he should be), then I suggest grabbing him.

If you play in a mixed league format, place him on your bench until his bat finally begins to heat up.

In deeper AL-only formats, try him as a starter if you’d like, but don’t be too disappointed if he continues to struggle over the next week.

Finally, in keeper leagues, this guy is a must-grab. He will be your starting shortstop sometime over the next two seasons, so why not just grab him now?

In Baltimore Orioles' Matt Wieters, A Star Is Born

This article originally appeared on Fantasyfootballmaniaxs.com.

Finally, after weeks of waiting, the top prospect in baseball arrives to the majors.

Matthew Wieters, a switch-hitting elite catching prospect, will be making his major league debut on Friday against Dontrelle Willis and the Detroit Tigers.

It will be a grand day for baseball, as a new era of young stars is born. He is the first to make some noise.

It appears as though many young position prospects are attracting some attention this season.

The Rangers’ Elvis Andrus is making an impact in Texas, the Indians’ Matt LaPorta has broken through the barrier to the bigs (only to be sent down once again), and even talents such as Dexter Fowler and Fernando Martinez are beginning to fill fans’ minds with wonder as they imagine how the future will unfold.

But all of these names pale in comparison to Wieters. He is a force, a quiet leader, and a future superstar.

Let’s show his numbers just to prove his ability. In two seasons of minor league ball (Last season, he played at both Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie, while this season, he began at Triple-A Norfolk.), he hit for a .330 average, with 32 homers, 121 RBI, 114 runs scored, a .420 OBP, and a .552 slugging percentage.

Impressed yet? Let us also not forget that he only played in 39 games this season. Imagine his numbers if he were to have completed the ‘09 campaign. To put it simply, the kid can hit, and can hit well.

So well that people are comparing him to Twins’ starting catcher Joe Mauer and Braves’ starting catcher Brian McCann. Ask any Orioles’ fan what the analysts call him, and they will simply reply, “They just call him a Joe Mauer with power.”

Need I say anymore?

Here’s what some people had to say regarding the backstop:

From MLB.com:

“Wieters does everything well but run. He has tremendous plate discipline and bat speed and the ability to hit for average and power from both sides of the plate. He's remarkably agile behind the plate -- especially considering his size -- with good hands and an above-average arm. He has performed well handling pitchers and calling games with a quiet leadership that is a big plus.”

Said by Orioles’ scouting director Joe Jordan:

"We sat back and watched what took place all summer, waiting for him to struggle to

see how he would handle it. He's got everything you could possibly look for. What can you say that hasn't been said? He's going to take this group of three guys (Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman and Jake Arrieta) and all of them are going, at some point in the near future, to force their way to Camden Yards and play significant roles. He's going to be the leader, the stabilizer out there every night. He has that aura about him in a quiet way. He's going to be the best guy on the field on most nights, but he'll be the last one to talk about it."

From associatedcontent.com:

“Playing a position of need in fantasy baseball, Matt Wieters and his power hitting bat, could easily become the best hitting catcher in the major leagues by the 2010 season. By fantasy baseball standards, Wieters will likely become the #1 fantasy baseball catcher by the 2011 season and possibly as early as the 2010 season. Boasting both patience and eye discipline at the plate that is similar to Joe Mauer, and the power numbers similar to Brian McCann, Matt Wieters will likely become a type of hybrid of those two All-Star catchers. Matt Wieters will have the potential and ability to post 30 homeruns, 100 rbi, and a .320 batting average at the major league level during his prime.”

So now we are left to wonder. How will he perform in his first season as a pro? Only time will tell, but Orioles’ fans are just too eager to wait. Many are already creating threads on message boards around the web, asking people to predict how he will do in his first at-bat.

Other sites are even comparing him to the great Chuck Norris. If you would like a good laugh, I highly suggest that you visit MattWietersFacts.com. This site alone shows you how excited fans are to see a new stud being brought into the clubhouse.

It is time, though, to get down to business. Many fantasy owners took it upon themselves to pick Wieters in their respective drafts, only to find that he would be starting the season off in the minors.

If they were frustrated, then they may have let him go. Others who were patient will feel a little better about themselves when it’s all said and done.

What Wieters bring to a fantasy team is too much to write about. A starting catcher, for one, is something that any fantasy owner is always on the lookout for. A starting catcher that tears the cover off the ball, now that’s something you don’t always see on your roster.

With all the protection that he will be receiving in that young O’s lineup, whew!

It sends a shiver down my spine imagining the damage he will cause. Matt is projected to start at the bottom of the batting order on Friday night, and he will slowly make his way to the heart of the order as time flies by.

Just think, Brian Roberts, Adam Jones, and Nick Markakis (arguably the best 1-2-3 combo in the American League) setting up for the monstrous switch-hitter. Power bats Aubrey Huff, Nolan Reimold, and Luke Scott providing protection behind him. In other words, plenty of RBI opportunities and even more run scoring chances.

There hasn’t been a bigger goldmine for 5X5 points in recent years. So let me put this in the most simple way possible: If Wieters is on your fantasy team, then you better have him slotted somewhere in your lineup come Friday.

If he’s not, then you better pray he’s still stuck in waivers.

As for his effect on baseball itself, the young catcher will be looking to turn over a new leaf for a game that has traveled down a dark path over the past few seasons. The “Steroid Era” is finally coming to a close, and the “Rookie Era” is beginning.

Watch out fans of baseball, for Matt Wieters is here.

Ready or not, here he comes.

Lawrence Barreca is a fantasy baseball senior writer/director for www.fantasyfootballmaniaxs.com.
The Fantasy Baseball Week Nine Waiver Wire

This article originally appeared on Fantasyfootballmaniaxs.com.

We now enter week nine as fresh faces are beginning to emerge throughout the league. We have seen the re-arrival of David Price to the Rays, and now the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball is coming.

Matt Wieters will be joining the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, as a new era of professional baseball is being born. We now focus on these youngsters, as well as many other names, on this week’s waiver wire.

Infielders

Matt Wieters (C—BAL)

He has finally come. The top prospect in baseball will be arriving on Friday, May 29 against the Detroit Tigers, as he will step to the plate for the first time in a big league uniform.

Let’s look at his numbers at Triple-A Norfolk before we start hyping him up. Wieters hit for a .305 average, with five homers, 30 RBI, 25 runs scored, and a .387 OBP. This all occurred in a 39-game span. If he were to play a 150-game season, then he was currently on pace to finish with 115 RBI.

To put it simply, the kid can hit.

Now it’s time for the hype. Wieters is a switch hitter who bats well from both sides of the plate. He shows tremendous power and could be a 40-home run threat in the prime of his career. He has a cannon of an arm (he was a former catcher/closer for Georgia Tech), and he possesses quiet leadership.

Without a doubt, this stud will be one of the top five hitters in MLB before 2011. So now the question is: Is he still available?

According to Yahoo! Sports, he is currently owned in 67 percent of fantasy formats, leaving you with a nice window of opportunity to go grab him. If I were you, I would check while I’m reading this very sentence. Once he is called up, he will most likely be owned in 100 percent of all fantasy leagues, so make a run for him while you still can.

This youngster could be slotted into the starting catcher or utility spot for the long run. He’s just that good.

Jeff Keppinger (3B, 2B, SS—HOU)

The Houston Astros organization has been up-and-down with the injury issues as of late, as both starting second baseman Kazuo Matsui and third baseman Geoff Blum are currently listed as questionable over the next few days. This gives super utility man Jeff Keppinger more shots at the plate.

Thus far this season, Keppinger is hitting for a .313 average with two homers, four RBI, and eight runs scored. So now you may be saying, “Well, you said the two injured starters are questionable, so they are bound to come back soon, right?” Sure, they will be back; however, just because you’re back doesn’t mean you’ll be playing.

According to a Houston Astros broadcaster, it is possible that Matsui may lose a significant amount of AB's even after his return, showing fans and fantasy owners alike that Keppinger is making his presence known. With more at-bats come better numbers, and with better numbers comes more fantasy value.

If you need a third baseman, second baseman, or shortstop, Keppinger is the perfect injury reserve/bench player. As he receives more and more starts, he could grow into a starter in any fantasy format.

Jerry Hairston Jr. (2B, 3B, SS, OF—CIN)

Sticking with the super utility theme, Jerry Hairston Jr. is beginning to make some noise in Cincinnati.

There have been several injuries to Reds starters this season, with second baseman Brandon Phillips and third baseman Edwin Encarnacion both missing time. Hairston Jr. is taking full advantage of the situation. So far, he’s hitting for a .264 average with six homers, 14 RBI, 29 runs scored, and four stolen bases.

He has now connected for three home runs in his last nine games, showing power that many people were not expecting to see.

Like Keppinger, Hairston provides the option of several positions for a fantasy owner. He is eligible at second base, third base, shortstop, and in the outfield, making him one of the better bench/injury reserve players on the market. With the way he’s hitting at the moment, he could prove to be a solid fill-in type player for any struggling starter.

Andy LaRoche (3B—PIT)

Once a former top prospect within the Dodgers organization, Andy LaRoche has seen everything but success over the past year; however, things are finally beginning to look up for the talented young corner infielder.

After struggling initially out of the gate, LaRoche is currently hitting for a .447 average during his 10-game hit streak. On the year, he is now batting for a .303 average with two homers, 21 RBI, 15 runs scored, and two stolen bases.

Andy has plenty of protection from the lineup around him, as Jack Wilson, Freddy Sanchez, Adam LaRoche, Robinson Diaz, Nate McLouth, Brandon Moss, and Nyjer Morgan have all produced well thus far. LaRoche appears to be morphing into a starting fantasy third baseman, and in due time, he could be one of the premier young infielders in the pros.

Monitor his progress over the next week. If he continues to hit at a torrid pace, grab him while you can. He may end up as a starter on your fantasy squad before season’s end.

Outfielders

Fernando Martinez (RF—NYM)

With all the talk about David Price and Matt Wieters, many fans have forgotten about the New York Mets’ top prospect. Fernando Martinez, a young outfielder from the Dominican Republic, hit for a .291 average with eight homers, 28 RBI, 22 runs scored, and two stolen bases while at Triple-A Buffalo.

Looking at Martinez’s upside, the key for him lies in his keeper potential. One day, Fernando is projected at being a 30-plus home run threat, but for now, his power is still raw. If you participate in a keeper league, then grabbing him is a must. He has limitless potential, and hitting in a stacked lineup in New York only helps.

As far as the immediate future, monitor his status over the next week. Watch how he performs, for this will determine whether or not you should pick him up in week nine.

Ben Zobrist (SS, OF—TB)

With the painful news that starting second baseman Akinori Iwamura will be out for the season, the Rays have had to search for new infield options. This search only increased as starting shortstop Jason Bartlett also went on the disabled list this past week. Now, the Tampa Bay franchise will be turning to Ben Zobrist to help fill the holes.

Thus far, Zobrist is hitting for a .287 average with eight homers, 24 RBI, 19 runs scored, and four stolen bases. Zobrist has shocked us all with the “pop” in his bat this season, and many are predicting him to hit 20-plus home runs by the year’s end. As a fantasy owner, one can only take advantage of his situation.

He will be getting everyday at-bats from here on out, and his power numbers will only feed off of the opportunities. If you can, pick him up as soon as possible and place him on your bench. In due time, he could evolve into a starting fantasy outfielder/shortstop, giving you a solid sleeper pickup.

Scott Podsednik (OF—CHW)

Anyone else remember this guy from a couple of years back? He was the final player voted on to the American League All-Star team, as his speedy nature and leadoff capabilities took the baseball world by storm.

Well, to put it lightly, he’s back. He has returned with the team that made him a quiet star, the Chicago White Sox, and now they are placing him in the right situation to succeed.

With Carlos Quentin hurt and Jermaine Dye appealing a suspension, Podsednik is looking to make an impact in the Chicago lineup. In ’09, he’s hitting for a .296 average with five RBI, six runs scored, and three stolen bases.

He has been hitting leadoff this season, just like old times. He’s not the only one who enjoys him being there. This was said in regard to Podsednik leading off:

"Whoever says, and this comes from the heart, all those computer guys or whatever, whoever says it's not important to have a leadoff hitter, he's full of whatever it is," Cora said.

"It's very important to have a leadoff hitter because when they get on base, the big boys get happy. And when the big boys are happy, it's a good thing. Scott Podsednik has been doing a good job, and when he gets on base it's a good thing for us.”

As a fantasy owner, Podsednik can be used in a variety of ways. With his speed, stolen bases are prevalent, aiding in 5X5 formats. He also uses this ability to score runs on a daily basis.

Now, the one thing to watch out for is the return of Dewayne Wise to the Sox outfield. This is why I will tell you to monitor Podsednik over the next week. If he is still stealing bases and scoring runs, give him a shot on your bench.

Pitchers

Jason Berken (SP—BAL)

The Orioles seem to send out a new prospect each week. A few weeks ago, it was starter Brad Bergesen. Last week, it was the return of former Cubs starter Rich Hill. This time around, we are witnessing the arrival of Matt Wieters and Jason Berken.

In his first major league start, Berken went five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. He also struck out three and walked three. Berken can be compared to Bergesen in a way, as both cannot overpower hitters; however, they change speeds and have solid breaking pitches to escape jams.

Berken is someone that should be monitored in week nine, for he has solid potential for this season. He may end up being a steal for any fantasy owner.

Edgar G. Gonzalez (SP—OAK)

Like Berken, Gonzalez was another young pitcher making his major league debut this past week. He went five innings, giving up one earned run on four hits. He also struck out four and walked two.

This youngster has high upside, and he shouldn’t be taken lightly. His next start is on Friday against Scott Feldman and the Texas Rangers. Here, we will see how good Gonzalez truly is. If he’s able to outduel Feldman, then I think it’s fair to say that he would make a nice waiver pickup for the upcoming week.

Sean Marshall (SP—CHC)

The Cubs’ rotation has hit a bit of a rough patch as of late. Ace Carlos Zambrano was ejected on Wednesday, and many are expecting him to be suspended for a limited period of time. Also, Rich Harden is hurt, so the team needs the young Marshall to step up. Thus far, Marshall is 3-3 with a 3.70 ERA, 29 strikeouts, and 13 walks.

He has won three of his last four outings, and he has looked sharp in the rotation. He has been matched up against back-end starters, so he always appears to have a favorable matchup.

If you’d like, grab him off of waivers and start him. He will help anyone in a 5X5 fantasy format gain ground in the “wins” category.

The Fantasy Baseball Week Eight Waiver Wire

This article originally appeared on Fantasyfootballmaniaxs.com.

We now enter Week Eight of the 2009 season, as teams that had been lying low at the beginning of the year are now starting to break out.

Now with Alex Rodriguez back on the Bronx Bombers, the offense has taken off, with newly acquired first baseman Mark Teixeira leading the way.

Instead of focusing on the big-name players, though, we here at the waiver wire try to point out the guys who are floating under the radar. So, without further ado, here is the Week Eight Waiver Wire.

Infielders

Craig Counsell (2B, MIL)

Recently, the Milwaukee Brewers suffered a devastating loss, as starting second baseman Richie Weeks is now out for the season with a wrist injury. Now, the question facing the organization is simple: Who will take Weeks’ place? For now, veteran Craig Counsell appears to be a viable option.

Thus far, he has hit for a .342 average, with one homer, seven RBI, and 15 runs scored in 73 at-bats. Counsell is on fire at the moment, something that any fantasy owner can take full advantage of.

While he’s on a roll, this slap-hitting infielder could fit on any fantasy bench. Just as he does in the majors, he could be a solid injury reserve player for the time being. The key with him is playing time.

How much more will he get as the season progresses? This answer is beyond my knowledge. However, what I do know is this: The Brewers are going to need someone up the middle that can produce offensively. If Counsell could be that guy, then the last thing you will need to worry about is losing him.

Pick him up immediately if you want a solid bench option.

Adam Kennedy (2B, OAK)

Sticking with the veteran second baseman theme, Adam Kennedy finds himself in the same situation as Counsell does in Milwaukee. The A’s starting second baseman, Mark Ellis, has found himself on the 60-day disabled list with a calf injury, and now the team is calling upon a veteran to fill the gap on the right side of the infield.

Kennedy has produced well so far, hitting for a .386 average with one home run, seven RBI, four runs scored, and a stolen base. So how long can he keep it up? Kennedy has never been known as a power hitter, though he does have decent speed.

My guess is that, with everyday at-bats, he should be able to keep up a steady average while also picking up RBI here and there.

The thing that makes him valuable also applies to Counsell above: While they’re hot, they are solid additions to any fantasy bench. Kennedy is a top injury reserve option with the potential to grow into an everyday fantasy second baseman with consistent production. So if you need a player to man an infield position for a few days, Kennedy is your guy.

Robinson Diaz (C, PIT)

The Pirates have had to endure the loss of recently extended catcher Ryan Doumit this season; however, a different name is numbing the pain a bit. Robinson Diaz, a career .300 hitter in the minors, is looking to make an impact with the big league club this summer.

So far, so good. He is currently hitting for a .306 average with one homer, five RBI, and five runs scored in 49 at-bats.

Diaz should be getting an immense amount of playing time while the youngster Doumit is out, giving him plenty of opportunities to show the pro club his potential. As far as his fantasy value goes, watch this kid over the next few games. If he can keep up a solid average, then he may prove effective in 5X5 formats.

He appears to have potential, so if you’d like, grab him early and hope for the emergence of a young star. If he explodes, then you have made one of the gutsiest moves of the year. Just don’t try it every week.

Pedro Feliz (3B, PHI)

The Phillies already had a solid infield with Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, and Ryan Howard. Now, it appears as though Pedro Feliz wants to join in the fun. Feliz is going unnoticed this season, hitting for a .310 average with two home runs, 23 RBI, and 17 runs scored.

One thing that aids in Feliz’s production is the lineup he hits in. Whenever you have the three named above, plus Raul Ibanez, Jayson Werth, and Shane Victorino, you’re bound to put up solid numbers.

Another question that you may have is whether or not he is available. Being a member of the World Champion Phillies, he’s bound to be on someone’s fantasy team, right? Wrong.

In fact, according to Yahoo! Sports, Feliz is only owned in 12 percent of fantasy formats, a two percent upgrade from last week. So I will put this as simply as I can: If he’s available, grab him! He’s playing like a starting fantasy third baseman at the moment, and a bench role may not be enough.

If you can start him, I highly suggest it. He may be most effective in leagues containing the “corner infielder” spot on the roster. Just imagine having someone like David Wright or Alex Rodriguez at third for your team, with Feliz producing the way he is in the corner infield spot.

You know what? I might just go do that myself.

Outfielders

Gerardo Parra (CF, ARZ)

There is another talented young outfielder breaking out in Arizona. First, it was Justin Upton. Now, Gerardo Parra is showing his potential. So far this season, he is hitting for a .333 average with one homer, seven RBI, and five runs scored.

Parra is a severe sleeper is all fantasy formats, especially if the one thing standing in his way would move.

What thing, you may ask? Why, that’s old Chris B. Young (not exactly old, but you should catch my drift), the current starting center fielder in Arizona.

With the way Young is hitting, though (.167 average, two home runs, eight RBI, 13 runs scored, and four stolen bases), it shouldn’t be that hard to pass him right up. We can all hope Parra bypasses him soon enough.

When he does, he could be one of the better young outfielders in the National League. You should be taking full advantage of this opportunity. Grab him when you have the chance.

Micah Hoffpauir (RF, CHC)

This next outfielder is an intriguing one. Micah Hoffpauir (one of the hardest names I’ve ever had to spell here on the waiver wire) is in a bit of a sticky situation.

This young Cubs’ outfielder/first baseman seems to have all the tools at the plate to succeed. He is hitting for a .314 average with four home runs, 14 RBI, and nine runs scored in 70 at-bats.

This is the key with him, though. In order for Hoffpauir to produce, he must get the opportunity to step to the plate on a nightly basis. Here’s the problem: How do you fit him into an outfield with Alfonso Soriano, Kosuke Fukudome, and Milton Bradley?

How can one possibly give Derrek Lee a day off over at first base? The simple answer is: You can’t.

So why is he on my waiver wire? Micah may appear as though he won’t receive enough at-bats this season, but I beg to differ. How can anyone leave a .300+ hitter with “pop” in his bat just sitting on the bench?

Here are some things to consider.

1) Milton Bradley is in the outfield. Don’t get it yet? In other words, he has a temper. He has the kind of temper that can get him suspended, one of the reasons why Hoffpauir was playing a few days ago.

2) Injuries. All three of the Cubs’ outfielders have had their issues in the past. Why think differently now?

3) Like I said before, he’s too good to just sit there. Lou Piniella will have to play him at some point. I can’t spell it out any more clearly. This guy may be a risky one to put on the waiver wire, but I felt he deserved it.

Now, it’s time for you to make a decision. If I were you, I would grab this guy, sit him on my bench, and wait for the perfect moment to start him. He has solid upside at this point, so make the call.

Justin Maxwell (CF, WSH)

The Washington Nationals don’t have a whole lot going their way this season. The worst record in the major leagues (12-29) can make it feel worse. At least we can look forward to the future, right? The future appears to be brighter than people expect in Washington.

They have Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn to go with Josh Willingham, Elijah Dukes, Jesus Flores, and Cristian Guzman. A solid pitching staff is forming with Jordan Zimmerman, Shairon Martis, and the potential soon-to-be National prospect Steven Strasburg. With all that said, another name may be joining this list someday.

He is Justin Maxwell, a youngster with decent speed and power.

Here is what Diamondcutter.wordpress.com had to say about him:

“Maxwell also continues to improve at the plate where he still doesn’t make great contact but has shown some nice raw power potential for Washington. While he won’t probably make any runs at any batting titles, his defense and speed should help secure him a spot in the Majors.”

Maxwell has potential, so watch him over the next week. If he performs well, then he should be a solid pickup for any fantasy bench.

Pitchers

Rich Hill (SP, BAL)

Anyone out there remember this guy from two years ago when he was with the Chicago Cubs? People were calling him the “ace of the future” before he broke down in 2008. He blamed this on back issues, and now he’s back and healthy once again. Currently with the Baltimore Orioles, Hill is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in two starts.

From watching Hill over his past two outings, I am noticing one primary behavior: He appears to have better control over his curveball than his fastball. To put it simply, his curveball is sick. If you don’t believe me, just go on to MLB.com and watch videos of him pitching this season.

From what I see, Hill looks like he’s back to make another run at a solid career. If he can ignite a lost spark in Birdland, look for him to be a solid sleeper in ‘09.

David Price (SP, TB)

Scott Kazmir is down, and the Tampa Bay Rays are in need of a replacement. It’s a good thing they have the No. 1 pitching prospect in all of baseball in David Price.

After his outstanding performance last postseason, Price was sent to the Rays' Triple-A affiliate at the start of ‘09. Now, an injury to the team’s ace is giving him the opportunity to shine once again.

Some of you may be asking, “Are you sure that he’s still available in most leagues?” To answer the question, he is still available, just not in most leagues. According to Yahoo! Sports, he is currently available in 61 percent of formats.

This is most probably due to everyone releasing him after they found out he was being sent back down to the farm. If Price is there for the taking, grab him.

He’s a top prospect for a reason, and hopefully he can come in and be the starter that he is projected to become.

Dontrelle Willis (SP, DET)

He’s back! Well, we can’t determine this just yet, but at least the once electric youngster is making progress. Willis picked up his first win as a Tiger on Tuesday night, as he went 6.1 innings, giving up no runs on one hit and striking out five. He also walked two.

The key for Dontrelle this season is going to be consistency. Can he build off of this performance? Only time will tell, but it’s a start.

If I were you, I would monitor his next outing. If he succeeds, grab him as soon as possible. We may be seeing the rise of a former fallen star.

Lawrence Barreca is a fantasy baseball senior writer/director for www.fantasyfootballmaniaxs.com.
Felix Pie's Struggles Bring a New Competition to the Baltimore Orioles

This article originally appeared at the Baltimore Sports Report.

Finally, after many weeks of watching and waiting for the left field dilemma in Baltimore to subside, we watch as youngster Nolan Reimold rushes out onto the field.

This moment, both glorious and heartbreaking in more ways than one, has many O’s fans stirring in Birdland. For the many that pleaded to see the 24-year old Felix Pie remain the starter in left, they see their hopeful futures being torn. To all those in favor of a Reimold call-up, they gaze on as the days of tomorrow are born.

The 25-year old stud, formerly hitting for a .394 average, with nine homers, 27 RBI, 21 runs scored, and six stolen bases while at Triple-A Norfolk, acquired his first big-league hit late on Thursday night. This base knock will hopefully be the first of many more to come.

Now the question is: What about Felix Pie? So far this season, Felix is hitting for a .203 average, with two homers, four RBI, nine runs scored, and a stolen base. His average seems to resemble what was told to us by many Cubs’ fans at the time of the trade that brought the coveted prospect to Baltimore.

His power is unquestioned, for we know he possesses it, yet he hasn’t been able to hone it just yet. Thus far, we have seen roughly two tools out of this so-called “five-tool” player.

Most of his potential was shown as he made a spectacular catch in left field to save George Sherrill from another heartbreaking defeat against the Tampa Bay Rays. But this is all the positives we can say about Pie this year.

One thing is certain: The kid is definitely trying. From what we hear, he is one of the hardest workers on the squad, as he is in the batting cage every day working on getting his swing down.

Orioles’ hitting coach Terry Crowley has made Pie a project, and thus far, we can say that he has received, at most, a D. We can see some progress, though. Now we just need some consistency. For now, the future is uncertain for Pie, and only time will tell how his major league career will pan out.

In all honesty, I’m rooting for the guy (Though it may not sound that way.), for if he can get his act together, this could be the best outfield in all the majors for years to come. The key from that last sentence was “getting his act together”.

He has yet to do so. We as fans can only hope that one of the two (Reimold or Pie) will pan out and be the future left fielder for the Birds.

So who do you want to see? Reimold? Pie? It is a question that we may be asking ourselves over the next few weeks. Let’s all sit back and watch how it unfolds. To say the least, this should be a fun competition to follow.

The Fantasy Baseball Week Seven Waiver Wire

This article originally appeared on Fantasyfootballmaniaxs.com.

We are now more than 35 games into the year as teams are beginning to show their true colors on the diamond.

At this time of the season, we begin to see who are contenders, who are pretenders, and what players are capable of holding their own in the bigs. We will look at some of these athletes on this week’s waiver wire.

Infielders

Mat Gamel (3B) (MIL)- Well, it looks as though the Brew Crew has brought up another talented young bat to add to a growing lineup. Joining a batting order already filled with star-studded youngsters (J.J. Hardy, Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks, Ryan Braun, and Corey Hart) is third base prospect Mat Gamel.

While with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds, Gamel hit for a .336 average, with eight homers, 31 RBI, 25 runs scored, and a .428 OBP in 33 games.

Now up in the big leagues with the Brewers, Gamel is looking to prove to Milwaukee management that he could be the third baseman of the future. For now, his role should be simple.

We should be seeing nothing more than a start here-and-there with some pinch-hits late in games, but other than that, we must be patient as we wait for him to get his chance. Gamel has plenty of talent, and is a definite grab in keeper leagues, so monitor his progress for the time being.

We could just have another star brewing in Milwaukee.

Kendry Morales (1B) (LAA)- In years past, the first base position for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim has been held by the likes of Casey Kotchman and Mark Teixeira. With these two out of the picture, the Halos needed someone to step up and assume the role as starter.

Kendry Morales appears to be a solid fit. At the moment, he is hitting for a .280 average, with five homers, 20 RBI, and 16 runs scored.

Now that Kendry is finally receiving full-time at-bats, he is showing what potential he truly has. Morales could be a sleeper this season, as he hits for solid power and has the ability to drive in runs on a consistent basis.

So, if you need someone to man your fantasy bench and be an injury reserve candidate, then Morales is your guy. If you want to see him in your lineup even quicker, start him. You may just like what you see out of this growing star.

Rod Barajas (C) (TOR)- I must say, the Blue Birds of Canada are really impressing me. They are hitting it off on all cylinders: Offense, defense, starting pitching, and bullpen.

It’s unbelievable seeing them sitting atop the mighty AL East at 24-14, and this success is due in large part to catcher Rod Barajas. Thus far, Barajas is hitting for a .308 average, with three homers, 21 RBI, and 12 runs scored.

His work behind the plate is one thing, as ace Roy Halladay and youngsters Scott Richmond, Brett Cecil, and Brian Tallet have all found success so far this season. His bat is another. He hits in an order with solid protection, as he is surrounded by Aaron Hill, Alex Rios, Vernon Wells, Travis Snider, Adam Lind, and Lyle Overbay.

As long as he can continue producing, he is a solid fantasy option at the catchers’ position. If he’s available, grab him. If you need a starter, play him. It couldn’t be any more simple. As of now, Barajas is a top-of-the-line fantasy backstop, and hopefully it will stay that way.

Cristian Guzman (SS) (WSH)- What is up with the Nationals’ infielders this season? Ryan Zimmerman goes on a 30-game tear, Nick Johnson is hitting for a .333 average, and now Cristian Guzman is shooting to reach the .400 mark. So far this season, he is hitting for a .390 average, with one homer, nine RBI, 18 runs scored, and a stolen base.

What Guzman brings to any fantasy team is simple: Everything. He can occasionally hit for power, always hit for average, and is a continuous threat night-in-and-night-out to swipe a bag. Now some of you may be wondering how many people actually own Guzman.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Cristian is owned in 35 percent of fantasy formats, a four percent increase from last week. To put it simply, there is a good chance that he’s still available near you.

Guzman would make a fine starting shortstop in any fantasy format, so if you can get him, I suggest you do. He could be a key to success for you sometime in the future.

Outfielders

Laynce Nix (LF) (CIN)- Formerly owned by the up-and-coming Chris Dickerson, the left field job in Cincinnati now belongs to Laynce Nix. He certainly deserves it, as he is hitting for a .304 average, with two homers, seven RBI, and 11 runs scored.

Nix appears to bring power and RBI potential to the table, two qualities that can prove effective in 5X5 fantasy formats.

If Nix can keep his job (Something that appears likely if he just continues to tear the cover off the ball.), then he should prove to be a solid bench player/injury reserve. Monitor his progress over the next week and see how well he continues to perform. If he succeeds, take him and run. He could prove to be useful at some point this year.

Nolan Reimold (LF) (BAL)- Matt Wieters who? This is what many Orioles’ fans were saying while they gazed on at this kid’s potential while down at Triple-A Norfolk. Here, he hit for a .394 average, with nine home runs, 27 RBI, 21 runs scored, and six stolen bases. Some analysts call him the “right-handed Nick Markakis.”

Others say that he could be the future in left field for Baltimore.

But let’s look at his situation. He is currently fighting for playing time with Cubs’ former top prospect Felix Pie and veteran Luke Scott, so at-bats for Reimold will come based on production.

If he hits, he sees the plate more often, and vice-versa. This 25-year old outfielder has high upside, as he brings severe power and RBI potential to the batters’ box with every appearance.

Now that he’s in B-More, it’s only a matter of time before we see the “pop” become unleashed. Reimold is a solid pickup in keeper leagues, and an intriguing one in mixed formats.

If I were you, I would monitor his progress over the week. If he performs well, grab him and put him on your bench. You may like what you see out of him as the games fly by.

Clete Thomas (RF) (DET)- A few weeks ago, a different Tigers’ outfielder made this list (Josh Anderson). This time around, though, we have a new name to add. Clete Thomas, the new right fielder of the Detroit Tigers, is slowly beginning to make himself known throughout the league.

He is hitting for a .333 average, with five RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base.

With Gary Sheffield being sent to the New York Mets, the Tigers had former starting right fielder Magglio Ordonez assume the role as designated hitter. Thus far, this idea has worked out well. With Thomas hitting in front of Ordonez, the runs will continue to come, aiding anyone who needs help in this category in a 5X5 fantasy format.

If you need someone to cross the plate on a regular basis, Clete is your guy.

Pitchers

Matt Palmer (SP) (LAA)- Who is this guy? That’s all I asked when I read that he threw a complete game on Wednesday night against the Red Sox. This victory put him at 4-0 on the young season, with a 3.38 ERA and 16 strikeouts. He has also issued ten walks.

So, what is so special about him? He finds a way to win ballgames. Plain and simple. To make picking him up even more appealing, he is a two-start pitcher for Week Seven, giving you the opportunity to possibly grab two victories over the next seven days. If he’s available, grab him and put his solid work to good use.

David Aardsma (RP) (SEA)- The youngster has finally been relieved of his duties. Former Seattle closer Brandon Morrow is out as the Mariners’ ninth inning man, and now setup man David Aardsma must step in and control the show. This season, he is 0-1, with a 1.62 ERA, three saves, 18 strikeouts, and 11 walks.

Seattle has a decent offense that will allow save opportunities to come his way, making Aardsma’s acquisition an appealing one (Their defense isn’t too shabby either.). If you need saves anytime soon, look into the Seattle bullpen for an answer. Aardsma could prove reliable over the next few weeks, so if he’s available, don’t be afraid to snatch him.

Eric Stults (SP) (LAD)- To conclude our Week Seven list, we look to the Dodgers’ rotation for our final candidate. Eric Stults is the guy we’re analyzing today. Stults has overachieved thus far this season, going 4-1, with a 3.58 ERA, 20 strikeouts, and 14 walks.

One primary thing that Stults will always have going in his favor is a solid offense behind him. Even without Manny Ramirez, the Dodgers have one of the better young lineups in all of baseball, led by core players Russell Martin, Matt Kemp, James Loney, Andre Ethier, and Juan Pierre.

As long as these names are in the batting order, Stults should have no problem pitching with a lead on a consistent basis. So, if you’re looking for a few wins over the next couple of weeks, then Stults may be a solution. Who knows, he could end up in your fantasy rotation for the duration of the regular season.

The Fantasy Baseball Week Six Waiver Wire

This article originally appeared on Fantasyfootballmaniaxs.com.

It has been an exciting past week in baseball, to say the least. We have seen the bust of Manny Ramirez, as the Los Angeles star will be suspended for 50 games. Also, Alex Rodriguez returned to the Yankees’ lineup and knocked a three-run bomb against the Birds of Baltimore.

All things aside, though, it’s time to get back to business. Week Six is here, and we are now adding another ten names to your head. Below is the Week Six Waiver Wire. Let’s see who I have in store this time around.

Infielders

Brendan Harris (2B) (MIN)- With the recent struggle of former starting second baseman Alexi Casilla, the Twins made the decision to send him down to Triple-A on Wednesday. This gives backup infielder Brendan Harris the opportunity to succeed.

Thus far, Harris has hit for a .308 average, with one homerun, four RBI, and eight runs scored in 52 at-bats. Some fantasy owners may be wondering about Brendan’s playing time for now. I say don’t worry about it. CBS Sports believes that Harris could be a .280-15-80-80 player, given a full-season’s worth of plate appearances.

This shouldn’t be a problem, for backup Matt Tolbert was just recalled from the farm in order to replace Casilla, meaning that Harris has an edge over his competition. Look for Harris to be a steady second baseman over the next few weeks. The best part about him: He should come cheap.

He should be available in most fantasy formats, and picking him up and placing him on your bench can’t hurt. If you’re in need of an injury reserve guy or even a starter, look for Harris. He should fit nicely on any fantasy squad.

Casey Kotchman (1B) (ATL)- After being traded from the Angels to the Braves last season in the Mark Teixeira deal, Kotchman had to assume the role as Atlanta’s new first baseman. He would finish with a career-high 14 home runs in ‘08, and he appears to be back for more in ‘09.

He is currently hitting for a .313 average, with one homer, six RBI, and nine runs scored. Kotchman always seems to make contact; however, he can be streaky, so watch him.

The key for him will be specific matchups. Braves’ manager Bobby Cox hasn’t been starting him lately against southpaws, but he said this was due to an attempt to try to get some hot right handed hitters into the lineup.

Other than this, Kotchman should make a fine fantasy first baseman in any format. He should fit well on any bench, and if the time comes, Kotchman is a reliable starter while he’s hitting well. For the time being, he seems like a solid fantasy option.

Brian Barden (3B) (STL)- Like the St. Louis Cardinals’ lineup really needed to add more “pop”. To go along with Pujols, Duncan, Ludwick, Molina, and Rasmus, the Red Birds added a new weapon to their arsenal.

With starting third baseman Troy Glaus hitting the 15-day disabled list, rookie Brian Barden was added to the roster. I don’t think he’ll be leaving anytime soon. He is hitting for a .306 average, with three homers, seven RBI, and eight runs scored.

There are a few things to remember with this youngster. First, he has power in his bat, so he should be a solid starter in any 5X5 format. Second, he has an immense amount of protection in the Cardinals’ lineup.

Whenever you have all the hitters named above batting around you, I’m sure that you are bound to see a few meatballs. Lastly, he is the starter, so we should see an abundance of at-bats over the next week or two.

If I were you, I would monitor his progress over the next seven days. If he’s still hitting like a monster, grab him. He could be a serious sleeper for the remainder of the season.

Matt LaPorta (1B) (CLE)- Once considered an elite prospect in the Brewers’ organization, he was dealt to the Cleveland Indians in the CC Sabathia deal. Now he’s ready to make an impact with the Tribe.

In only his second big league game, LaPorta recorded his first hit his career. This hit, though, went a little farther than usual. It was a two-run homer over the left-field seats, something that we should be seeing plenty more of over time. Although he is hitting only .154 on the year, the potential is still there.

This kid could become the next big power hitter in Cleveland, and he couldn’t have arrived at a better time with the steady decline of designated hitter Travis Hafner. In order to make the most out of LaPorta, a fantasy owner can only do one thing: Be patient. If you want him now, grab him.

Next, wait for him to get on a hot streak, then start him and watch the magic happen. Before long, he could become one of the better young power hitters in the game. For all we know, he could end up competing with Matt Wieters for AL Rookie of the Year (at least we think).

Outfielders

Colby Rasmus (CF) (STL)- With Rick Ankiel being placed on the 15-day disabled list after that horrific slam into the outfield wall, Colby Rasmus has been called on to take his spot.

Formerly making an appearance on my “2009’s Top-10 Fantasy Baseball Impact Rookies” list, we all know the potential that Rasmus possesses. So far this season, he is hitting for a .257 average, with one homer, six RBI, 16 runs scored, and a stolen base.

Rasmus should see plenty more plate appearances over the next two weeks, giving him the opportunity to shine with his bat. Also, like Barden, Rasmus will receive unbelievable protection in that St. Louis lineup.

As a fantasy owner, I’m always looking for an outfielder to put on my bench until I need him. Rasmus is that outfielder. Pick him up and use him as an injury reserve-type of player. He may prove useful at some point over the next few weeks.

Juan Pierre (LF) (LAD)- If you haven’t heard about the whole Manny Ramirez situation, then you have apparently been sitting in the corner of a dark room curled up in a ball. This headline has been all over every channel since the story broke, and the impact of it is incredible.

So now the Dodgers are left without their starting left fielder. Now the question is: Who will take his place? That, my friends, is the job of Juan Pierre.

Pierre is currently hitting for a .371 average, with three RBI, five runs scored, and two stolen bases. So now you may be wondering: Is he even still available? The answer is yes, but only if you hurry. According to Yahoo! Sports, he is owned in 21 percent of fantasy leagues, a 14 percent jump from last week.

This number will only grow as the days pass. Pierre will be getting plenty of playing time while Manny serves his suspension. He has never been one to hit for power; however, his contact and stolen base potential surely make up for it. Be hasty! He may be gone before you know it.

Franklin Gutierrez (CF) (SEA)- The starting center fielder in Seattle has finally gotten on a hot streak. Gutierrez is hitting for a .287 average, with three homers, 13 RBI, and 14 runs scored. He appears to be on a tear at the moment, an encouraging sign for fantasy owners in need of a reserve outfielder.

The thing with Gutierrez is simple: He’s only owned in five percent of Yahoo! Leagues. To put it simply, no one has him, and he’s heating up fast. Franklin could make a solid starter down the road, and we may be seeing the first signs now.

I say grab him and keep him on your bench until you need him. He could prove to be one of your more effective outfielders by season’s end.

Pitchers

Scott Feldman (SP) (TEX)- Since entering the Texas rotation, Feldman has been solid. In 16-2/3 innings, he has allowed only six earned runs and has recorded a 3.25 ERA. Overall, he is 2-0 with a 5.79 ERA, striking out 14 and walking eight. Feldman’s move to the starting five appears to have given him new life, as he now producing at an incredible rate.

His value continues to improve, as he is now a Two-Start pitcher for Week Six, facing the Angels in his next start. As a fantasy owner, monitor his progress over the next week. If he continues to find success, grab him. Otherwise, avoid him. He seems to have some upside, so just make sure to keep an eye on him.

LaTroy Hawkins (RP) (HOU)- With closer Jose Valverde being placed on the disabled list due to a calf injury, veteran LaTroy Hawkins will have to fill in. So far, so good. He currently has recorded four saves and has a 2.63 ERA, proving to many that he can hold his own in the ninth. Now, the question is this: How many save opportunities will he get?

Looking at the situation as a whole, the Astros’ offense is capable of scoring runs, but the main problem will be the rotation. With ace Roy Oswalt hurt and Wandy Rodriguez being the only other viable option, it appears as though save chances will be few.

Thus far, though, Hawkins has had several opportunities, so this may not be as big of an issue as it seems.

If you play in a 5X5 format, then Hawkins should be useful for as long as he’s the closer. Once Valverde comes back in early June, Hawkins will most probably move back to the setup role. For now, take advantage of his success.

Shairon Martis (SP) (WSH)- Another young starter has emerged out of the Nationals’ farm system. First, it was Zimmerman, now Martis (Just imagine when they sign Steven Strasburg with the first overall pick in the upcoming draft.

If only they could have signed Aaron Crow from last year). Martis is now 3-0 after throwing a complete game gem against the high-powered St. Louis Cardinals, showing many fans that this kid could be the real deal.

His ERA is about average for a youngster (4.60), but the one thing that concerns me is his walk total. He has walked eleven batters compared to thirteen strikeouts, something that could eventually hurt him down the road if it continues. Another issue is the team he plays on.

The Nats don’t have much of anything, offense or bullpen, so wins may be hard to come by. Other than that, it’s all good. The guy seems like he has solid upside, so I would monitor his progress over the next week.
