Manchester United: Who's the Next Star?

Well after a deserved break, it seems life back to normal as the English Premier League is off an running. With two games played the EPL already seems to be getting interesting.

In-form Spurs seem to be one of those teams with depth, talent, and definite top four contenders. While money-splashing City seem to have got the season of to a good start with new signings.

Liverpool came back strongly after loosing their opening fixture, with a 4-0 drubbing of Stoke at home. Spurs continued their good run by smashing Hull 5-1 with a sublime hat-trick from Jermain Defoe.

But the headlines were definitely United loss to new comers Burnley at Turf Moor. The Red Devils who are without a number of first team players in Van der Sar, Vidic & Ferdinand seem a little below par when they came across a determined Burnley unit.

So after just two games, does Sir Alex need to splash some cash on a new attacking midfielder. Is there a need, or does he have enough resources to be the first English team to complete a fourth consecutive title championship.

Well, Manchester United have a huge squad, with talented young players and experience campaigners, but will they march on to another year of success.

The Ronaldo Factor is definitely having an effect, loosing a major player with his scoring ability and "fear factor" will have its effect on opposition teams.

Ronaldo was a player who always had two or three players marking him, which allowed space for other players to exploit, added to the fear that many defences had, he could make something out of nothing. Now that the Portuguese winger is gone, who will fill his £80 million shoes.

Rooney has the potential of been a great striker, an at only 23 he has a long way to go in building his career. But United require an immediate fix, a character that can run at teams with pace and skill, a player that will be a menace to oppositions both at home and abroad.

A number of players stand out, possible signings that could perhaps be as huge as Ronaldo, or close to that.

Sergio "kun" Aguero

(Argentinian Footballer) Who Applies his trade in Spain at Atletico Madrid. Aguero is a player that has impressed me for some time now, his ability to take on defences from deep positions and with his speed to carry it to a striking position and usually scores. Sergio is linked with moves to Chelsea, United and Liverpool

But with the cash at hand at Old Trafford, 40 Million pounds for a 21 year old with immense talent and goal scoring record is a bargain in today's world.

(2003-2006) Independiente 23 Goals in 54 Appearances
(2006 - Present) Atletico Madrid 42 Goals in 112 Appearance
Aguero has has 19 international caps with seven goals to his name.

Franck Ribery

(French International) Plays for German Giant, Bayern Munich in the Bunduslige

He has impressed the world with his quick feet and movement on the left flank whether he plays for Bayern or for France.

Ribery has everything a winger requires, speed, skill and has the fear factor that opposition teams talk about in pre-match team talks.

Ribery is expensive an with Bayern asking for 80M, Sir Alex will have his work cut out if his willing to open talks with Bayern Munich.

Like Aguero, there's a lot of interest in Ribery, United main rivals are Real Madrid who after a record spending season are prepared to pay 40 Million pounds and give two of their Dutch midfielders for the Frenchman.

Douglas Costa

( Brazilian) At only 18 years of age, the young Brazilian has be sought after by some of Europe elite.

Gremio, the club Douglas is currently playing for has asked for 20 Million + for their young midfielder.

His a left footed player with speed and vision. His also known for his free-kick ability.

After just 11 games for the U/20 Brazilian team, Douglas will soon make it to top flight international status if he continues his form for Gremio.

United have offered around 6 million but with a buy out clause of 20 million pounds, the club are not willing to negotiate anything less.

David Silva

(Spanish) 23-year-old Silva plays for Valencia in the La Liga.

2009 has seen a lot of interest for the Spanish international, notably from English clubs.

A player that can play on with side or in the center supporting the stinker has good vision and speed to menace opposition defenders.

He could be the man who will turn the fortunes of many Man United fans who feel since the departure of Ronaldo, United seem a little dead in the midfield.

Silva with his European experience could well be a great buy for Sir Alex, and with the price for many of the other prospects, anything between 25 and 30 million could be a brilliant buy.

Lets hope Valencia are willing to let go of there main play-maker.

Well, those a few of the top prospects that could light up Old Trafford and put a smile on the faces of millions around the world.

With Micheal Owen and Antonio Valencia already showing willingness another mega cash transfer won't be too bad.

United also have the young talented, Zoran Tosic and Fredrico Macheda in the ranks, so a loss to Burnely is far from over. The season has only begun. Lets hope for the best.

GLORY GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED....

Arab Money: City Prepared To Pay John Terry A Million Pounds Per Month

Manchester City have made a number of failed attempts to lure Chelsea and England defender John Terry to the blue side of Manchester. But now it's about time the Arab money does the talking head-to-head with that of the Russian.

A £50 million transfer offer and £250,000-a-week wage could seal the deal for the City bosses.

Could Terry turn down that deal?

United's David Gill has warned that big spending Chelsea and City could face huge problems in the near future if they continue to offer large salary packages to keep or lure players to their respective clubs.

City have brought in big names and stars but all of whom are attacking players in their own right, so now Mark Hughes and the "bank" wish to tighten the screws defensively and with millions at their disposal, it can't be that difficult.

Diego Maradona and the Porthsmouth Link

So we called them the Big Four as they led English football for the past decade, then came about the men with the money at Manchester City, so they went to the "Big Five".

But now there's another takeover that's in the pipeline, and with the millions at disposal we could see Portsmouth join to create the "Big Six".

Reports in Arab papers state that Argentinian super hero, Diego Maradona, could be on the cards for the position of coach at the South Coast-based club and could leave the national position.

But reports also state that new owner Sh. Fahim will want Maradona to be the president of the club and be in charge of buying players rather than him coaching.

According to the article, Maradona already has a number of superstars ready to sign, the names mentioned with that of Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o, Valencian duo David Silva and David Villa, and Argentinian international Sergio "Kun" Aguero.

But with the possible shut deal with Inter, Eto'o will be one name that's unlikely, for the rest their inclusion could light up the Premier League even more.

But what impact will this have on the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool, who seem to be far ahead even from Arsenal who lost key players in recent years?

Could we see an immediate difference with the arrival of the two new Arab billionaires, or will it take time for the money to sink in. Man City currently have nine strikers, four of which are star strikers, and other are players who were part of the team for a few years now.

So how will Mark Hughes manage them and could we see Carlos Tevez sitting on the bench once again, just this time in the blue colours of Manchester?

Maradona, who hasn't had the best start to hist coaching career, could also see a backlash from the Argentinian public, if he leaves the national team in a time that could see them ousted from a place in the 2010 World Cup.

We will follow this story and keep you updated...

South Africa: Sports Mania 2009

Well, well, well...what a start to an unbelievable sporting year for South Africans.

With the completion of a victorious cricket tour and home series against Australia, it looks like South African fans and sports lovers will get non-stop action in the months to come.

Currently, the Indian Premier League is the main source of entertainment and excitement in this lovely country. Power sixes and mouth-watering games have caught the attention of just about everyone.

Cricket superstars seen at malls and flea markets has made dreams come true for supporters countrywide. But with less than half of the tournament complete, there's still lots of action, drama, and intrigue left.

South Africa will also host the 2009 edition of the Confederations Cup, which will see giants like Brazil, Italy, and Spain come to show off their talent in June. This event will be the curtain-raiser for the FIFA World Cup that will take place during the same period next year.

After what looks to be an amazing football feast, Manchester City are said to be visiting our country in July for their season warm-up. They will face local rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the annual Vodacom Challenge. Previous clubs that played the challenge were Manchester United (2008, 2009) and Tottenham Hotspurs (2007).

And that's not all! The British & Irish Lion will also be flying south to face the World Champions, South Africa. Rugby lovers will have their dose of action amongst the Super 14 fixtures to be played.

Later this year, the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy will be held in Johannesburg and Pretoria. The event was originally planned to take place in Pakistan, but due to security concerns, South Africa was chosen as an alternative venue. This tournament will host the top eight cricket-playing nations.

Apart from these major sporting events, the Comrades Marathon will be taking place early June, as well as the Annual Mr. Price Pro at the Durban Beachfront during the Beach Africa Festival.

So if you're a South African or reside in this lovely country, you have no excuse to stay at home or say you're bored. The nation will be honored with a newly elected president soon, and let's hope this amazing sporting year will be a peaceful one filled with never-to-forget moments.

Cristiano Ronaldo...The Difference

Looking ahead to tonight's clash with Italian giants Inter Milan, the difference between the two teams can simply be Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese winger could either defy the Inter defence with speed and intimidation, or will Jose Mourinho manage to take him out of the game?

Ronaldo was a major presence in the first leg, with numerous chances at goal from set pieces and open play, but the World Player of the Year couldn't take advantage.

He needs to produce a special performance, similar to that of Torres against Real, only better. His nifty footwork, countless step overs and rampaging runs down the flanks will surely test even the best of defences.

Cristiano is lucky to have a team full of talented and skillful players, who understand his game and are able to link up with him, especially on counter attacks.

Rooney, Berbatov and company will also be vital in breaching Jose's men, while Vidic and Ferdinand will try to keep any attacks out of the United box.

Whether you are a fan of either side or a neutral, your eyes will be glued to the television in anticipation of an enthralling game between two great teams.

Can the United machine roll on towards European glory or will the "Special One" snatch another dream from Sir Alex? We will have to wait and see.

English Dominance: Will the Torture Continue?

After a thrilling night of European football, featuring plenty of goals and moments of sublime skill, it seems the level of the English game is far beyond that of its European counterparts.

It was a night which saw five-time champions Liverpool take Real Madrid to the cleaners, making the Spanish giants look ordinary and ineffective.

Steven Gerrard and his men started the last 16 clash with a definite agenda, and from the first whistle they took the game to their opponents with pace, determination, and aggression.

An early goal from Fernando Torres took the aggregate to 2-0 before the pressure led to a Steven Gerrard penalty and yet more misery for Real.

The pain of being hammered out of the most coveted European competition was not only felt in Spain.

Italy's Juventus shared their misery as they were held to a 2-2 draw which was enough for Chelsea to progress to the next stage.

With Arsenal taking a first-leg lead into Rome, and Manchester United hosting Serie A leaders Inter Milan at home, the English dominance of European and World football seems to be getting stronger.

Will tonight's clashes between Arsenal and Roma be more of the same or could the Italians show a bit of Azzuri class and outplay two of England's big four?

Well, Roma will have the advantage of attempting to overturn their deficit at home, but Jose Mourinho's Inter will have to silence 77,000 fans at Old Trafford.

In their first leg, Inter looked lacklustre and some way off a side worthy of leading Serie A, but could Jose get the best out of his team when it mattered?

Inter certainly have the talent, boasting some of the top players in the world, including the likes of Ibrahimovich, Adriano, Chivu, and Julio Cesar.

Can Sir Alex Ferguson inspire his high-flying side to produce a memorable European performance and outclass the Italian Giants?

Who will shine on this European night? Who will lead the way for the English champions?

With so many world class players, Sir Alex will have to find the balance.

Personally, I believe United must adopt a similar approach to that adopted by Liverpool, balancing speed and aggression.

These are two qualities for which English sides are renowned, and with the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, Berbatov, and Tevez, United have a slight edge over their Italian opponents.

However, you can never underestimate the powers of Jose Mourinho.

This will be a clash that will set the world alight, a match that will be so much more than just a last 16 encounter. It's a game for the brave and a mouth-watering spectacle.

Man United Vs Inter

After so much speculation and added interest in the English Premier League, it seems much of the world's attention will shift to the most coveted European trophy, the Champions League.

With mouth-watering clashes set for the last 16 round, viewers and spectators are definitely in for a treat. Three of England's big four will be taking on three of Italy's giants, and as a bonus we will get to see nine-time winners Real Madrid take on five-times winners Liverpool in a trilling encounter.

But let's focus our attention to what could be the biggest an most important clash in the final 16. Manchester United verses Internazionale, a game that will be played at the San Siro on Feb. 24.

With both teams at the top of their respective leagues, showing much determination to hold on to the league titles, they are in form. But who will come out on top?

Manchester United are the definite favourites. Apart from multiple wins and clean sheets in the league, good goal scoring difference and excellent defensive record, the Champions League poses a totally different set of problems for Sir Alex Ferguson.

United have depth in their squad which is a major advantage, especially when you're playing for five trophies, but let's look at the most likely candidates for the Milan clash.

Possible Line-up: E.van der Sar, Rafeal da Silva, Rio Ferdinand, Johnny Evan, Patrice Evra, Ji Sung Park, Paul Scholes/Micheal Carrick, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Dimitar Berbatov, Wayne Rooney

Many might argue whether Rafeal will play, looking at the Inter side and generally Italian football, Sir Alex will want to use the pace of the young Brazilian to unsettle the Inter midfield, and having Rafeal and Evra on either side could pose that threat. Unless Sir Alex goes for experience we could then see Gary Neville rather than the young pacemen.

Whether in form and on fire, Cristiano Ronaldo will be identified as a defensive target even if it's just on his reputation. His pace, quick counter attack runs on the flanks, and skillful moves, step overs, and power shots will be amongst his armory.

But it's not just him who Milan need to worry about, Wayne Rooney is back from injury and will look to impress and get back into form. His fighting spirit will motivate the rest of the lads to perform even better.

Dimitar Berbatov, the Bulgarian striker is deadly in the box, and could snatch on to anything and increase his Champions League scoring tally this season.

Sir Alex has found that providing experience into the team will create balance and a definite need for calmness and control in sticky situations, thus the inclusion of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

These men have been here so many times, and their experience is invaluable to the success of the team. With Gigg signing a contract for another year, the Welshman still wants more trophies.

Defensively, both teams are very strong, so we could see a midfield battle, and any lay-offs to the strikers on either end could land a goal.

Inter will also pose a major threat with the likes of Ibrahimovic and Adriano up front, and without Vidic at the back due to his suspension, they could just sneak a goal or two.

Although Inter might be on top, they don't seem to have the "Italian Giant" feeling, looking at their squad there is much depth, and the average age difference between the clubs will be in United's favour.

And that could be the outcome - speed and endurance from the young red devils could just be the downfall of the Italians.

Many have asked the question, "will United go to the San Siro and defend?" The answer is NO! The hunger and passion is currently too strong. Ferguson will go out there and attack from the get go.

So let's hope we see a match filled with brilliance, class, and many, many highlights. And let the best team win....

Ricky's Men Are Falling In The Dark....

Not so long ago, Australia were the king of cricket, the unbeatable giants who were untouchable both in one day internationals and test.

But in recent months things have changed, and the transformation period, inclusion of new players, retirement of older experience players are having a major impact on the present, and could affect the future of Australian cricket in the International arena.

But where are the flaws, apart from opposition teams just been better than them, Australia lack a consistent middle order, and bowling attack.

Long gone are the days when McGrath and Warne ripped batting line-ups, the days when Bevan and Martyn destroyed bowling attacks.

Australia now see themselves as trying to survive at the top, while the likes of South Africa and India take charge.

In the last 14 months or so Greame Smith and his men have worked hard to chase down the World Champions, now they making it look so easy right in their back yard.

If South Africa were to beat Australia in the next ODI, they will move to the No. 1 spot even if its just till the Aussies meet New Zealand. But mentally it will affect them, if it hasn't already.

Ricky Ponting's captaincy will soon come under their spotlight, for a man as successful as he is, for a batsman so poised and unbelievable as he is, it's hard to imagine him not coming back strongly, but with another series against the Proteas, this time in South Africa it will be hard work for the Aussie.

Ruthless United Clean West Brom in Back Yard

After much speculation over who will play, and concerns about Manchester United's injury list, Sir Alex put a strong team on the field including a number of players that were supposedly injured.

A game that sprung controversy and a few bad decision on the path of the referee saw the Red Devils clean up West Brom with five goals.

West Brom came out fired up for the encounter with the league champions, the first ten minutes was fast paced with West Brom having majority of the possession. But once United settled down and got the bottle in opposition territory, it was one way traffic.

Paul Robinson, West Brom captain was sent off in the second half almost immediately after making a hard tackle on Ji Sung Park, after few replays a showed that Robinson did go in with studs up, and he in fact might have gotten a touch to the ball.

United ended the half 2-0 up, and came out in the second half rejuvenated by the possibility of another victory and more importantly three more points.

Vidic added to the tally with a classy head from a Ryan Giggs corner, many would have thought United would now sit back. But no, they continued the attack on a broken West Brom team, Ronaldo ended his 10-week league goal drought scoring brace.

Sir Alex said he was impressed with the ruthless attacking performance that players displayed and was hoping for similar commitment in future matches.

United will face Everton next, and Sir Alex will like to see a few more player recover from injuries during the week, which will give him more options in the midfield.

Last night we saw, Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown back in helm, also another achievement was Edwin Van der Sar not letting the ball go through for 1035 minutes now—an English record.

United Injury Woes Continue Ahead of WestBrom Clash...

With seventeen premier league games, a host of Champions League, FA Cup, and a Carling Cup final still to play, Sir Alex has an injury list that's just getting longer.

With almost 12 players injured, the English champions are going to be tested when the face bottom of the log West Brom in tonight's Premier League clash.

Defensively, United are starved after back up defenders also had knocks in the Carling Cup match against Derby and then again on Saturday in the FA Cup.

Injury list is as follows:

Wes Brown (Long Term Injury)

Rio Ferdinand

Johnny Evans

Patrice Evra

Rafeal da Silva

Fabio da Silva

Owen Hargreaves

Anderson

Wayne Rooney

Nani

Ji Sung Park

Other players who are not a 100% are Gary Neville, Cristiano Ronaldo who fell ill on Saturday, and Danny Welbeck.

In a report early Monday, Sir Alex said Ronaldo could be fit. United's youngsters and second string players will have to hold the guard while Carlos Tevez and Berbatov will take on the attack.

Tonight's game will be a true test of character and managerial ability that Sir Alex has been renowned for.

Passion and Hunger Will Win the League...

If there's any ingredient needed to win big trophies, it's hunger for victory and tons of passion for your club. These are the sort of traits that a successful United team has shown over the past couple seasons, but even more this season.

After winning the Premier League and Champions League you would think the English giants are happy to lay back. Never. They seem more hungry than the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal who haven't had luck for many years.

The desire to win and stay on top as the No.1 club is portrayed in every single player that wears the red t-shirt. The older players want more and more, while the younger players want to be part of the success.

Recent performances from Carlos Tevez and Dimirtar Berbatov are examples of the determination and passion these men have. Other such examples are in young Rafeal da Silva and Danny Welbeck.

Could United do it again? Could they attain victory in more than one competition? All these answers will be unveiled within the next few months, but the passion and hunger for success needs to be there, otherwise they will fall back the same way Arsenal did, and Liverpool seem to be doing.

Sir Alex has been able to put a side together, such a side that always needs to fight for positions, a team made of men, a team where stars a born not bought. If there's anyone responsible for the success of this team, and for instilling such passion within those players its Sir Alex Ferguson, a man that has more hunger then any other.

EPL: Super XI

After a super weekend of football and so much more still to come, the English Premier League seems to grab the attention every week.

Manchester United lost to Arsenal at the Emirates, Spurs beat Man City, and Chelsea retained the No.1 spot after beating Blackburn.

So who will feature in the Super XI this month. Since early August we have seen some brilliant performances, and some not so brilliant performances.

But here's the top eleven players who performed well in the last couple months.

GK: Petr Cech

Petr seems to have only let four goals past his goal line in twelve games.

RB: José Bosingwa

Since his arrival in England, Bosingwa has impressed with his pace and consistency on the right.

LB: Patrice Evra

Evra continues from last season, a consistent performer, loves making those runs and braking through the opposition defence.

CM: Daniel Agger

A young but aggressive defender who has really made the central defence position at Liverpool his own.

CM: Nemanja Vidic

Doesn't like to take chances, a defender who makes sure of his defence lines, and always clears the ball.

RM: Cristiano Ronaldo

Since his operation, the Portuguese winger has returned with all enthusiasm and passion for the game.

LM: Dirk Kuyt

An amazing player who is always up to the task when some of the more senior players are having a bad day.

CM: Steven Gerrard

Always full of energy and exciting, brilliant control of the ball.

CM: Cesc Fabregas

Amazing control, skill and, ability to move the ball in small space.

CF: Amr Zaki

A class finisher, Zaki is the second top scorer so far, all of his goals has been class.

ST: Robinho

Brazilian magic, the young Brazilian has changed the attitude of Man City, and has brought flair and excitement to the English game.

Other players that have really impressed:

Frank Lampard

Wayne Rooney

Nicolas Anelka

John Terry

Darren Bent

Jermain Defoe

Deiberson Geovani

Kieran Richardson

Many of the players are from Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea. This is usually the case because these teams together with Arsenal have dominated the league thus far.

AB De Villiers: Is He The Next Jonty Rhodes?

Diving catches, quick pick-ups, and direct throws at the wickets, AB de Villiers is one of South Africa's premier fielders and middle order batsman.

The young 24 year old who was born in Pretoria, is seen as the next Jonty Rhodes, in terms of his fielding attributes and quick running between the wickets.

From a young age AB has been impressing, he played for Carrickfergus Cricket Club in Northern Ireland as a professional. De Villiers became the second youngest and second fastest South African to reach 1000 test runs after Greame Pollock.

de Villiers is a natural born sportsman, apart from cricket he has talents in golf, rugby, and tennis. After a short spell for the Under 19 South African team, he made his debut for the Titans.

AB made his test debut at an early age of just 20, against England in Port Elizabeth. Initially he was an opening batsmen but was later dropped down the order. apart from batting and been an outfielder, his the national team's reserve wicket keeper.

In 2005, AB de Villiers ran Simon Katich out in what seemed an impossible run-out, it even surprised the likes of Clarke and Poniting.

On Wednesday evening, 5th November 2008, AB was yet again involved in a piece of class. A high catch which was missed by stand in captain Johan Botha was missed and fell inches away, the ball was then thrown to de Villiers by Botha, at this point Mohammed Ashraful of Bangladesh was out of his crease when AB took a full body dive and took all three stumps out, a similar run like the one Jonty Rhodes took in the 1992 World, when he ran Inzimam-ul-Haq out.

Apart from his marvelous fielding achievements, AB has excellent statistics batting both in test and one day internationals. He has played 72 matches ODI's to date with an average of 36.09 and a strike rate of 83.56, he currently has scored 2202 runs.

As a test batsman, he has played 44 matches scoring 2955 with an average of 41.61 and a highest score of 217 (not out).

AB also played for Delhi DareDevils in the Indian Premier League where he was signed (bidding fee) for $300 000

For a young 24 year old, it seems that the future of SA cricket lies beneath him, together with other youngsters the likes of Hashim Amla and JP Duminy, South African cricket has a bright future.

Manchester United-Arsenal: EPL Preview

Saturday's showdown between defending champion Manchester United and a classy Arsenal team at the Emirates will be definitely not be a game for the faint hearted.

After a draw for both sides in the Champions League, we can expect an exciting game filled with energy and lots of passion.

Manchester United will hope to have Edwin Van der Sar back, but according to reports Wes Brown will be out due to a long term injury. Also, Gary Neville is a doubt to start the game against the Gunners.

Other areas of concern is the central midfield: In the game against Celtic I felt we didn't have enough control in the middle of the park to allow the forwards to receive anything of value.

Much of the play was concentrated on the flanks; if United are going to break down the Arsenal defence, they are going to need to use the entire pitch which mean the center midfielders will have to be tight.

Defensively Manchester will need to be solid at the back and need to make sure they don't make any errors, because Arsenal have enough fire power to work the ball through small areas and build on mistakes.

Evra, Vidic, Ferdinand and possibly Rafeal will be the back line, in the center we can expect Carrick who seems to have recovered well from his injury. He could be linked up with Anderson and Ronaldo on the left and Giggs on the right.

Berbatov and Rooney will definitely start after United's inability to score against Celtic on Wednesday evening.

Arsenal will be hoping for better luck after a number of their top starters were injured over the weekend in a 2-1 defeat by Stoke. Wenger, who has publicly criticised bad tackles, and has said that many clubs are targeting his young players, will not have it easy if his forwards are still injured.

According to a report on Wednesday, Adebayor will be ready for the Red Devils, and will hope to bag few goals for the Londoners.

William Gallas and company will hope to improve at the back after letting six goal pass in the last two league encounters.

The center of Arsenal will hope to provide another orchestrated performance with intelligently brilliant passing, and skillful rhythm that has made Arsenal one of the best teams when building toward a goal.

The questions are: Will United allow Arsenal to play one touch footbal? Will Arsenal allow Manchester to play high speed counter attacking football?

Saturday lunch time will answer these and other questions when the Red Devils face the Gunners in a thrilling encounter at the Emirates.

Players to watch:

Cristiano Ronaldo: The Portuguese international is getting back to full fitness and seems to have gathered his rhythm.

Cesc Fabregas: Always a player with delightful skill and ease on the ball, he will definitely be a player that will provide problems for the United defence.

Celtic-Manchester United: Champions League Preview

After three games in this seasons Champions League, Manchester United's defense seems to be the strongest so far. United's back line has not let a single goal through and after a scare at the weekend in the Premier League, I doubt Celtic will get anything tonight.

Edwin Van der Sar has provided a great sense of stability in the goal for the Red Devils, and he will be missed tonight when United will face Celtic in the fourth game in Group E.

Van der Sar was left out of the squad due to a minor injury, Sir Alex felt it would be better if he rested his no.1 goalkeeper with a tough season still ahead.

The most likely replacement would be Kuzcack, the Polish goalkeeper could be the one to take charge in the absence of Van der Sar. But there are reports that young Englishman Ben Foster could be in goal for United.

Apart from the goalkeeping, United will want their back four to be solid and not take anything for granted. Veteran Gary Neville was also left out of the squad due to an injury alongside fellow right back Wes Brown.

This means that young Rafael da Silva will be on the right with Vidic and Ferdinand in the center of defense. Patrice Evra, who seems to impress every time he runs onto the pitch, will cover the left back position.

According to Sir Alex, if Celtic have the same approach of never giving in and never giving up, the approach that Hull City had at the weekend, then the defensive line need to be solid.

Can United's reserve goalkeeper keep up the good work that Van der Sar has put in, or will he break under pressure, well tonight will tell us the full story.

Hashim Amla: A Protea Soldier

In recent game Hashim Amla seem to have found his touch, Amla who is well known for his status as a test batsmen for the Proteas has been a prime attacking form against Kenya in two one day internationals.

The man from Durban has played an instrumental role in securing victory alongside Jaqcue Kallis in a game that saw many boundaries. Even though Kenya is a mediocre opposition, the Proteas are using these games as preparing for the December show down when they face Australia down under.

Taking a closer look at Amla's test record its clear that his a very talented young batsmen with great ability. He has in recent months established himself as a number three batsmen and has proved to be capable of standing for long hours out in the middle scoring big runs. Hashim has played 29 test matches scoring 1871 at an average of 38.18, with an excellent strike rate of 48.35.

At only 25 years of age he has set himself as a consistent top order batsment in the No. 2 ranked test and one day team in the world. Hashim has also played an instrumental role in his domestic team, the Dolphins where he captained the side at a tender age of 21.

In 2002 Amla captained the under-19s South African squad to the World Cup, where he lead South Africa to the final, but the Australian where to strong and defeated the young Proteas.

Hashim Amla is the first player of Indian decent to be included in the South African team, He is also a devout Muslim which has led to campaigns to remove all alcohol-promoting logos from merchandise and playing gear. He objected to the advert for Castle Larger beer on the South African team kit and has been allowed to wear a shirt without the logo of a brand of South African Breweries, one of South African cricket's biggest sponsors.

Amla who is regarded as one of many up-coming cricketers in the country was heavily criticised for his batting style which saw him score 36 runs on his first tour of England in 2004. But the South African selectors gave him a second chance in 2006 against New Zealand when he scored 149 in Cape Town.

Hashim Amla is still a candidate to become South Africa's second non-white test captain after Ashwell Prince. But for now he is just happy to be in the team, and is always willing to lend a hand in a Protea victory.

Manchester United-Celtic: Champions League Preview

Manchester United face Celtic in a Champions League encounter on Wednesday evening.

The reigning champions suffered several blows when three of their defensive players were not included in the squad.

Edwin Van der Sar, Wes Brown, and Gary Neville are ruled out due to injuries. United also don't have the services of Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves, both long-term injury absentees.

Sir Alex Ferguson has included a number of young guns to make the trip to Scotland on Tuesday afternoon. It seems Ben Foster will make his Champions League debut in a match that, if won, will see United progress to the next stage.

United's squad v Celtic: Kuszczak, Foster; Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, O'Shea, Rafael, Evans; Possebon, Anderson, Fletcher, Nani, Ronaldo, Gibson, Giggs, Carrick, Park; Tevez, Berbatov, Rooney.

United will want to make sure they defend well against a Celtic team that is very difficult to beat at home. Also, after the weekend's game where United made a number of defensive errors, uncharacteristically allowing three goals at home, the United back line will want to reassure Sir Alex they are capable of guarding the goal.

With so many talented midfielders, the men in the centre will play their hearts out in an attempt to impress their manager. Berbatov will want to continue his fine scoring form in the Champions League—the Bulgarian has four goals already this season.

Wayne Rooney will want to regain lost momentum and get a goal or two for his club, with Tevez hoping to build momentum where he has yet to have any this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo will undoubtedly be a player to watch, after scoring a glut of goals in the English Premier League he will want to put in another brilliant performance on the European stage.

All in all, although there are few regulars missing from the squad, United still seem strong and let's hope we get treated to an excellent European game.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Does He Deserve Footballer of the Year Award?

This year has thrown out some of the best footballers in many years. Although the English teams seem to host many of the favourites for FIFA World Player of the Year, Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid also have a few names to scream about.

So let's take a closer look at one of the nominees that I feel deserves this award.

Many critics might ask the questions: Why should Ronaldo win the award? Why has he won so many awards already?

Well, I watched about 95 percent of the games last season, and from what I saw, besides the 42 goals he scored, his influence was felt all over the field.

He is a great attacking player with excellent defensive ability, and he is always prepared to get back and assist the defenders when required. His presence on the field is huge; there is almost a sense that if Ronaldo is playing, there is a chance of something great happening.

Some critics may disagree and say there are several players of this type around, so what makes Ronaldo so special?

Well, that's where the 42 goals come in. His role on the pitch is to play in the center, gather the ball from the defence, and feed the forwards. But when you're so good, scoring 42 goals is just the natural end of the means.

Cristiano Ronaldo has shown glimpses of his perfect touch in recent games this season, but it's nothing like what we witnessed last season.

He underwent surgery only a few months past, and yet he has already scored six goals in the league, placing him in joint third position with Robinho on the individual standings.

After his "Madrid saga," the winger seems to be gathering himself and it looks as if that hunger to win and to always achieve more has returned.

In a recent interview with MUTV, Ronaldo said after each game is played, he takes time during the evening to review the game in detail, looking for errors. Then he works on those errors and tries to improve his game. Now, only a player who's hungry and willing to be the best would make such an effort.

Who do you think deserves the FIFA World Player of the Year award?

EPL Heating Up...

Just three months into the richest league in the world, and it seems the heat is beginning to be felt. The English Premier League, which hosts some of the world's best players, is only going to get better as the season progresses.

After years of just falling short, Liverpool regained their hunger for the local prize and have put their hearts into every game until the final whistle. But the Reds had their first stutter of the season last weekend when they lost to Spurs in a thrilling encounter.

This was the first loss for Benitez's team this season and for many United and Chelsea fans, they will be hoping for more.

Looking at the current standings, Chelsea lead on goal difference with Liverpool second and current champions Manchester United following in third position. But in recent games United seem to be stepping up in performance and desire to lift the trophy. Although United may seem strong and tough to break, a team that seems to be unstoppable is Chelsea—with 13 goals in their last three games, the boys from Stanford Bridge look very dangerous.

Nicolas Anelka has found his touch and is now scoring regularly, and is currently joint top scorer with Amr Zaki on eight goals in the league thus far. His hat-trick at the weekend against Sunderland proved he is still deadly in the box. Lampard also seems to be on fire with plenty of goals and close chances coming his way.

Looking at Chelsea's squad, it is a team that hosts some of the world's superstars. Currently Scolari isn't having much difficulty pleasing all because of the injury list, but what will he do when he has a full team of highly paid player all wanting to have a go? Will players be prepared to sit on the side, especially now when they want to impress their national coaches in a bid to get some international exposure in World Cup qualifiers.

So the Brazilian has some work at his hands, not forgetting the Champions League and FA Cup. But in order to be a top manager in top flight football, you will have to deal with all of this.

Turning our gaze to Manchester United, a team that seems stronger than everyone else, yet we have seen some small errors defensively in the last two game. These errors have contributed to opposition teams scoring and this could be costly at the end of the season when goal difference really matters. But on the bright side, Cristiano Ronaldo has found his touch and is getting back to his full form after scoring another two goals against Hull City.

While three of the top four are consistent, the Londoners seem to be having difficulty in recent games. Arsenal lost four points in the last two games, with a thrilling draw against Spurs, and a defeat by newcomers Stoke. Will the Frenchman gather his troops and start to rediscover their brilliance, or will the likes of Hull City be heading to the Champions League next season?

Well it's still too early for that kind of speculation.

For now though, we can be prepared to expect some thrilling football from all the English teams, while some try to qualify for Europe, others are just trying to survive the harsh nature of the best league in the world.

World Test XI: Looking Ahead to a Great Season

Over the next couple of months we will see some of the best test cricket. The South Africa vs. England and India vs. Sri Lanka matches have already begun.

But there is still more to come with what seems to be the World Test Championship—Australia taking on No. 2 South Africa down south.

Some say it will be the biggest test for the two teams. Both are keen to prove their rankings. So let's take a look at some of the top players who made it to my World Test XI 2008.

G Smith

M Hayden

M Jayawardene

H Amla

M Yousuf

M Boucher

D Bravo

B Lee

M Muralidaran

D Steyn

C Vaas

There are many top players who are left out of this, but that is simply because they haven't performed recently.

Looking at India and the thumping they received from Sri Lanka in the last test, I couldn't find one player who stood out in front of their international competitors. I am not saying they don't have talented players, I just think they haven't proven themselves in 2008...yet.

After seeing today's game and the excellent performance and thundering strikes from Sehwag, I think he deserves some credit. But the likes of Hayden and Smith have played well so far, and have gotten the recognition until now.

Jayawardene has performed exceptionally well in recent times and is maturing into a world class cricketer. Many cricket critics would say Kallis has to be in the team.

Being a South Africa and Kallis fan, I think we haven't seen the best of him this season. Yes, last season he was outstanding. Let's just hope he gets back to normal soon.

If you ask anyone out there, Hashim Amla has proved himself over and over again. A player with excellent test characteristics, he has the patience and concentration to bat for long hours, waiting on bad deliveries and scoring big 100s. His recent performance has been phenomenal.

Although Pakistan hasn't played much test cricket lately, I still believe Muhammad Yousuf deserves to be on the list. He's another player with brilliant technique and great test qualities, able to block the entire day and come out with the goods.

Looking at world wicket keepers in both forms of the game, Mark Boucher is undoubtedly the best and has shown his ability to bat, taking the Proteas to many victories. His has solid hands and excellent leadership skills.

Dwayne Bravo, a young player with enormous cricket talent, showed his leadership in the test series against South Africa. He proved his commitment and dedication when he bowled long spells.

Looking at the bowling attack, there are no surprises. All four bowlers have worked hard in recent times, and have picked up numerous wickets. Many have won matches for their nations. Brett Lee, an outstanding, fast, and energetic bowler, has proven that he is one of the best in the world with his pace and consistency.

Now that Warne is out of international cricket, Muralidaran is the world's best spinner. With a unique arm action and big eyes he has terrorised top and lower order batting lineups. His recent performance against India showed how good he is, picking up 11 wickets in the test match.

Dale Steyn, jumped to the top of the ICC Reliance Test Bowling Ranking last summer when he punished the likes of Pakistan, New Zealand, and West Indies. He will hope to continue his brilliant form this season, although he has picked up a thumb injury in England last week.

If you're looking for consistency, dedication, swing, and pace you've got Chaminda Vass. The Sri Lankan has always delivered and bowled superbly in any form of the game.

If I were to choose a captain it has to be Grame Smith, and it's not because I'm South African. It's because for a man who was trusted with captaincy of the South African side at the age of 22, he has performed well and matured as one of the most successful captains of South Africa.

He has also won the last couple of series against New Zealand, West Indies, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, drawing a series against India. So his record speaks for itself.

South Africa Prove Depth in Batting Order

South Africa has once again shown tremendous depth in the quality and ability of their batting order.

The Proteas are currently playing Bangladesh "A" in a tour game in the UK, and a number of second string players were given the opportunity to prove their status as first team members.

JP Duminy definitely didn't disappoint when he scored an excellent 166 runs after having been run out.

Smith and Amla passed 50 but were later dismissed. Kallis, who needs a lot of batting to get back into touch, is not out on 52 with good friend and business partner Boucher at the crease on 12.

This game will be a good training exercise before the all-important third test at Edgebaston.

Although everything is looking rosy at the moment, the Proteas captain and coaching staff will have a huge decision to make regarding a replacement for paceman Dale Steyn since he has been ruled out of the third test with an injured thumb.

Once South Africa take the field it will be a hard battle between the likes of Andre Nel and Monde Zondeki, who will have to prove their worth and try to get an opportunity to play in the third test match.

Ntini will also try to get more over in as he tends to bowl better as the series goes on. But South Africa will hope that he will be ready and prepared to lead the attack since Steyn could be out for the next two very important clashes with the English.

Smith and his boys are known for their hard work and dedication in the field and will hope to continue persevering in an effort to become the World Test Champions. Although this game is simply a warm up, it will prove a lot for some of the younger lads in the squad.

The Incurable Truth Of The Football Transfer Market

Everyday we hear and read about unethical practices in football, whether it has to do with coaches, managers, agents, or the players themselves.

A lot of the time most of what we hear is rumors or some form of false news that newspapers and media outlets put out there in order to sell more papers or gain more viewership. How much of what is out there is really true, how much is just a lie?

When we read the paper or watch television, do we just believe everything or our we able to sift the truth from the lies. The recent stories about Cristiano Ronaldo, which is very boring by now, is an excellent example to illustrate how ethics and pure football practices are dying off.

In any business or deal it is law that you have a legal contract to avoid differences or any sort of problems later on, similar in this case Ronaldo signed a five year contract with Manchester united, ensuring the Portuguese winger will be at Old Trafford till 2012.

So lets take a look at how teams the likes of Madrid would benefit from the media without really saying anything themselves. Real knows if they had to just put an offer on the table, the so called "traditional way," United would reject it out right from the performance of Ronaldo in the last season.

What was required is that the player, in this case is Ronaldo, needs to see what he will get, how much he will get paid, the benefits in terms of lifestyle and luxuries, so they (the media) start to exaggerate everything and make it look very rosey, as if he will be the real one to benefit. Of course he will make a lot of money, but Madrid will make twice as much from every ad campaign or appearance Ronaldo makes.

What we need to understand is that gone are the days where football was about football, now it's all about the amount of money you (the team) can milk out of a player, and if the player is a superstar, well, then you can open a milk factory.

Previously when teams would be interested in a particular player and make that interest public, majority of the public would be interested in the players ability, skills, and talents, which is very normal.

Today, a lot has changed. A player is defined by his price tag. If Ronaldo is worth 70 million pounds it should mean he is brilliant. On the other hand, Lampard is worth 10 million pounds so he is not all that good.

But this is not always true. Yes Ronaldo is a talented player but so is Lampard, but because he is aged, his price tag drops and naturally the public believe he is not that good a player.

Look at David Beckham, another son of Manchester United. It has be reported that he earns around 500,000 pounds a week. He is 32-years-old and that's a lot of money for an in-form 26-year-old, so the laws when it comes to players earning are changed and modified to suit the clubs, and ultimately the billionaires who now can make millions on the side.

Just a matter of interest, someone like Ronaldo might feel a little bitter knowing that "currently" he is performing better than Beckham but is earning so much less.

This unspoken truth, where clubs tap players into coming when they are still under contract and where smaller teams feel obligated to sell is ruining the game.

Smaller teams always seem to produce young talent, 17- or 18-year-olds who have tremendous skill and talent. But as soon as they are notice by the European giants, its the smaller clubs who suffer the blow.

For many young players it's a dream come true to play at Manchester, Arsenal, or Real Madrid. With it comes fame, fortune, recognition, and a whole load of other benefits. So saying no to an offer from Barcelona would be stupidity on their side. That is why we always see these small clubs falling into relegation, they are unable to get consistent in their performance.

Take for instance Brazil, a nation that undoubtedly has the most number of talented young, and old, footballers. To be a Brazilian player already adds so much merit, and to play for the national team mean so much to them.

But ask yourself why is it that although they have so many great players, the Brazilian league is the poorest league with the richest talent available. The answer is simple, no corporation wants to spend money where they won't be huge kick backs, in terms of large viewership and big ad sales.

In 2006 it was reported that there was more than a 1,000 Brazilians playing in Europe. This has a negative and positive effect on Brazilian football. The negative been all the talent is always shipped away and because these players are now in Europe there isn't any major investment in their own country. The positive thing is that they have so much experience playing in different conditions—paying with and against players from other countries and learning so much that when it comes to playing for their national team, they have so much to share, and because they all come together they bring so much to the table.

Carlos Alberto Perreira made a comment when he was the coach of the Brazilian national team, he said that the reason why English football (England National team) is so poor is not because their are so many foreign players in England, but it's because there are so few English players in other leagues.

So this constant breach of ethics in the game has become so normal, that it has been allowed and accepted by majority of the public. We won't stop Spanish giants from continuously poaching young Argentinians and Brazilians, we will not stop big English clubs from signing African stars for very little sign-up fees.

Yes, after a while they all end up earning big salaries but the real losers are the former clubs who lose top players—player who made an impact to the team for very little.

If Ronaldo ends up at Madrid—although Ferguson made a statement in South Africa this week saying the youngster is going nowhere after having met with him—it would be a shame to football and a shame to ethics of the game to see players and clubs breaching contract.

Many have blamed Manchester and, in particular, Sir Alex for making a number of transfer deals by tapping players, but this practice will continue in every top club because young unknowns want to make a name for themselves at the same time make loads of cash and have lavish lifestyles.

Manchester United Battle For Vodacom Challenge Crown

Manchester United's visit to the southern tip of Africa saw an excellent encounter between the European Champions and the South African giants in a jam packed Newlands stadium in Cape Town.

Enthusiastic fans packed the stadium hoping to catch a glimpse of some of their heroes, while many United supporters thought they might see Manchester murder Kaizer Chiefs, they were disappointed. The home team came to the fore with a great display of energy and ability, impressing many including Sir Alex.

Brilliant goalkeeping kept the likes of Carlos Tevez and Paul Scholes out with a chance to get on the score sheet. While Chiefs persisted in getting a golden opportunity, Sipihwe Thabalala was brought down by the United skipper, which gave Chiefs a penalty. No problems for the youngster who netted the ball for a 1-0 lead.

United upped the tempo and started playing with a little more eagerness which allowed Tevez to cross the ball the area, and Eagles head home an equalizer. Both team continued to push on, but the hotly contested match ended in a draw.

Many say United were jet legged after a long flight from London to Cape Town. If that was the case we really are looking forward to Tuesday's game against the other Soweto giants, Pirates.

Manchester United will face Orlando Pirates at the Absa Stadium in Durban, another cracking encounter which will see thousands of fans flock to the stadium hoping for a high scoring game similar to the one we witnessed in the last Challenge, one where United beat Pirates 4-0.

In a press statement Sir Alex mentioned that a number of changes will be made to the team allowing all in squad to get a chance, the likes of Ferdinand, Silvestre and Carrick are said to be in the starting eleven as they missed out on the first game due to injury.

Ferguson will also have to keep an eye on his forwards, Rooney whose temper was rising after a harsh decision from the referee and Carlos Tevez who made a number of ruthless tackles in the opening game.

South Africa is nevertheless thrilled to have one of the best teams in the world visiting our shores. Many cannot wait for the next two game before United leave for Nigeria where they will play Portsmouth in what seems to be the curtain raiser for the Charity Shield.

Lets hope United have an excellent pre-season before the season starts and before they can once again dominate English and European football.

South Africa Vs England: Proteas Tighten Screws On Series...

South Africa versus England, day three saw the Proteas stamp their authority on the series by putting a huge total on the board. After a shaky start from captain Smith and his boys, the South African middle order came to the party with two splendid centuries.

Ashwell Prince scored an excellent 149 of 284 balls, his innings once again brought some sort of stability to the test match. But his partner AB de Villiers didn't disappoint and followed it up with a magnificent 174 of 381 deliveries.

De Villiers played a very patient game, and this innings was his slowest of the other six centuries he scored. Nevertheless it will definitely assist South Africa in there efforts to go 1-0 up in the four match series.

After the South Africans were bowled out for 522, Ntini finished the day after having taken two wickets. Strauss and Vaughan both got edges which where caught by Mark Boucher off the bowling of Ntini.

Tomorrow will be an exciting day of cricket as England will hope to get some form of respectability to their score with the likes of Cook and Pietersen at the crease with the score at 50/2.

On the other hand South African fast bowlers Steyn, Morkel and Nitni will be fired up and ready to bowl the English out before they can come close to the 269 runs which they need to avoid defeat.

Captain Greame Simth will be happy with the match so far, as everything looks in favour of the visitors. Personally I still want to see Kallis perform and pass 20, and I think everyone shares the same sentiment.

Manchester United: A Force to be Reckoned With

Already looking forward to the upcoming English Premier League, which has set the benchmark in Europe and across the world. With three English clubs playing in the semi-final of Europe's most prestigious tournaments and Manchester United winning the trophy it seems that for the next couple of years, English football will dominate the world.

Sir Alex Ferguson, undoubtedly one of the most experienced and successful managers in the world is on a mission. First, to beat Liverpool's record of 18 league titles and to win the Champions League at least one more time.

Can he do it? Yes he can. Does he have the team? Yes he does.

If you take a closer look at the United team, looking at everything from youth to experience, United has it all. Talent is flowing through the gates of Old Trafford and the eagerness to win and the willingness to stay as champions is so transparent in players such as Ryan Giggs and company.

Having won the league for the past two years, winning the European trophy, it's hard to imagine United falling below par this coming season. With Ronaldo's and Anderson's absence at the start of the season, and Manchester still looking strong, United will be tested. Can they win and go on without one or two of their stars?

A good test for United will be the upcoming tour to South Africa, one which I am personally looking forward to. It's a chance for thousands of fans to see some of the heroes in action against two of South Africa's giants. Although the likes of the Chiefs and the Pirates can't be compared to United, it will be interesting to see if players are able to gel together.

Younger players will have the opportunity to show their talent while some of the more experienced players will be able to have a run in before what seems to be a heavily contested season ahead.

Looking at the upcoming season, what can I say? It's going to be a "CRACKER" of a season.

With the likes of Chelsea already signing some big names, the Spurs cashing in on a number of talented individuals and some of the smaller clubs also making big purchases, England will be hot this summer.

Let's hope we are not disappointed and may the best club come out on top...

England, South Africa Cricket: Pray For Sunshine at Leeds

England and South Africa will meet at Leeds for the second test, and let’s hope therewill be sunshine on and off the field.

After a terrible performance by the Proteas in the first innings of the first test at Lords, South African captain Greame Smith and his men stood up and made a remarkable comeback by securing a draw with three centuries.

But looking back at that performance, very little can be said about one of the world's most talented cricketer, Jacques Kallis. He has not shown anything that will make the English afraid and it’s about time he does.

With Amla playing his heart out and other young guns waiting in the wings, this tour of England followed by Bangladesh at home and then away to Australia will really show how good a player he is.

Kallis, who had an outstanding season last year, will have to take a strong approach to this game. Personally, I think he should play the way he knows best, standing for long hours out there and waiting it out.

In recent games, Kallis has tried a more aggressive approach after much criticism with regards to his low strike rate. Over the last few years, his input in the game has been major, and having him as a fifth bowler is a plus for skipper Greame Smith.

But apart from Kallis, there are many other players who will have to up their game if they want to have a fair chance coming out with something from England.

The likes of Dale Steyn and Morne Mokel are two young talented pace bowlers who will have to really play out of their skins, attacking and putting top order batsman under pressure.

If Harris is selected, he will have to be on the spot and make the batsman work for his runs, as former Proteas speedster Alan Donald said in his column, "Harris might not take ten wickets, but he should at least put batsman under pressure and make them work for their runs..."

South Africa definitely has the momentum from the last game. Players like Smith, McKenzie, Amla, and Prince all pitched in with centuries. Then you have Kallis, de Villiers, and Boucher, who are hungry to get on the scoreboard with significant contributions.

In the bowling department, Harris, Ntini, Steyn, and Morkel all need to improve and regain the desire to win. From a selection point, I think maybe it will be a good idea to replace Harris with Nel, depending on the state of the pitch.

Nevertheless, the Proteas will have to go out there and dominate from day one if they want to win the test match and ultimately the test series.

Euro 2008: Can the "Dutch" Do It?

After years of choking can the Dutch beat all odds and win the European Championship?

Some of the world's biggest stars will once again take to the pitch tomorrow evening in a bid to beat the Russians for a spot in the semis.

After the show the Russians displayed agaisnt Sweden, it wont be an easy task for the men in orange. Thus far, with a total in-form squad with an attacking approach and glamorous finishing, it just could be the year for the Dutch.

Taking a look at the squad from back to front, there is balance both in terms of experience, talent, and a desire to go all the way.

Van Basten has excellent defenders that have big-match temperament—the likes of Van Bronchorst and Boulorous are able to hold their own in such games.

Van Basten is spoiled with choices of some of the best attacking and defensive midfielders, Arjen Robben and Snjider are just two names that comes to mind.

Upfront, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Dirk Kuyt, Hunterlaar, and Robin van Persie are all lethal and have the ability, skill, and talent to destroy any defense—the evidence is in their two group matches against Italy and France.

So what does Russia offer that will possibly make some of the Holland fans nervous? Well for one thing...Guus Hiddink. If anyone came to the party it was the coach, and maybe just maybe the Russians will be drinking vodka after causing the biggest upsets to a team that has shown everything.

Twenty years ago, Van Basten and his mates won the championship...now will he lead his nation to their second European triumph or will they sink to the "Not so might Russians."
