Understanding Brett Favre

I don’t know about you, but the seemingly endless Brett Favre saga is driving me nuts.

And if you think its bad where you are, try being a Vikings fan who lives in a Minnesota town that sits on the border with Wisconsin and is populated with a large percentage of green and gold cult members.

Not only do you get it in every RSS feed, every radio broadcast and every TV channel, but it is what everyone continues to talk about. SERENITY NOW!

But today—two days after coming out of fantasy blogging retirement—it hit me. While thanking my good friend Sara at fflibrarian (psst…go subscribe because she is very good) the other day for welcoming me back and giving me some link love, I realized what Brett Favre must feel like this time of year.

Last year, during a long and very busy football season, I started to loath fantasy football.

The task of writing multiple blog posts per week, writing for a local newspaper, managing three teams, working full-time and trying to be a father of three and husband was, frankly, kicking my ass.

The amount of fantasy football information I was taking in was out of hand, and, to be honest, it didn’t really do me or my squads any good.

A classic case of paralysis by analysis (and to be honest, my teams did better when I knew less and trusted my gut and stuck to the basics…more on that in a future post).

I began questioning the importance of this whole fantasy football thing. I mean, people are losing the jobs, the government is slowly siphoning away our rights, our country men and women are getting shot at and killed daily combat.

Meanwhile, here I am bitching about losing a fantasy football matchup, while at the same time leading others down the same path. I had to step away.

Well now the dust has settled, I’ve had a little time away from almost everything NFL, and I have a new perspective.

Realizing again that too much of good thing just is not good at all, I am going to press on. I like doing it, and the 405 of you that stuck around, evidently like me doing it so I will do it.

I will continue to share my thoughts and pass along useful fantasy information. But I will just do it on a slightly smaller scale and will give each of you the opportunity to contribute as well.

As a reader of FantasyFootballGoat you are encouraged to comment every chance you get. And if you really feel the need, you could even do an entire post (shoot me an email if your interested).

After all, when it comes to opinions and fantasy football piece of mind, the more the merrier. I don’t care what all the other guru’s tell you, no one of us knows it all.

And if they do tell you they know it all, don’t be a sucker, turn around and run away as fast as you can.

OH! And one last thing before you go, Sign up for the newsletter. Whether you are new or a Goat veteran, you will want to sign up because I will I be sending out each post and there will be times when I will send out some stuff that I don’t want to share with the world by posting live. Get the newsletter now!

Let us get you a new LCD TV for the upcoming season. See how now Click here !

Can You Ditch Your Childhood NFL Team?

I was listening to Paul Charchian (LeagueSafe) on KFAN the other day and they were discussing whether or not it is kosher, or even possible, to ditch your favorite childhood team.

Well, this really got me thinking and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.

My Team

As some of you may know I am a Vikes fan, and if you have followed them at all then you know they're not an easy team to be a fan of. They have broken my heart a million times, they repeatedly underachieve and do some boneheaded things.

So why not just find another team right?

I could save myself the heartache and just find another squad with a better track record. Simple, right?

Not really because that is just not me. No matter what, the Vikes have been my team for as long as I can remember and I will continue to be a Vikes fan through thick and thin—not by choice, but because they are in my blood. They are kinda like a family member, no matter how much they piss you off, at the end of the day, you're still family.

Besides, it really isn’t that bad—and it could be much worse.

One of my very good friends has been a Lions fan for his entire life—and he isn’t changing anytime soon. He lives right on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border, where he gets pummeled by Vikings and Packer fans year in and year out. Imagine that!

The Other Women

Another reason why it would be tough to switch over is you would probably have to deal with some backlash from other fans of that team. They sure get pissy if you are thinking about jumping ship.

For instance, a few years ago I bought and frequently wore a Patriots hat. Boy did I hear it from fellow Vikes fans, friends and even members of my own family every time I wore it somewhere.

I wasn’t jumping ship, but just showing my appreciation for a team I admire. I’ve always appreciate the Pats—and more specifically Bill Belichick's coaching style (if only he was the Vikes' coach. I can only dream.). It started when they beat the Rams as huge underdogs in Super Bowl XXXVI and then continued to overachieve, no matter how much adversity they faced season after season.

Look at last year, they lost their MVP quarterback, went 11-5 and BARELY missed the playoffs? That’s classic Belichick, and as a long time NFL football fan, I appreciate it—Spy Gate or not.

The bottom line is, I’m wearing the damn hat! I doesn’t mean I’m not a Vikes fan, I just have two favorite teams, that's all!

Fantasy Flux

Fantasy football contributes to a fluctuation in team loyalties (again without compromising my Vike fandom). I find myself having a new team or two that I pull for during the season, and even in the playoffs depending which players I have.

Last year I had Chris Henry of the Titans, which meant I was watching a lot of their games. Before I knew it, there I was pulling for them late in the season and again in the playoffs.

Bottom Line

If you’ve been a fan for one particular team a long time, it isn’t easy—and maybe not very respectable—to jump ship. Hell, if it were easy, we could all just convert to being Steeler fans—one of the easiest teams in the NFL to be a fan off. Instead of lamenting anything less than perfection, we could be going around annoying the hell out of everyone with chants of “Sixburgh.”

But at the same time, there is nothing wrong with having a team or two to pull for. It just means you get to enjoy more NFL football, and that my friend, is a very good thing.

How do you feel about it? Would you ditch your team? Do you have more than one favorite?

Share in the comments below.

Oh! And one last thing before I go. Whether you are new or a Goat veteran, you will want to sign up for the new newsletter I set up.

Why?

Are These the 2009 Fantasy Football Sleepers and Value Picks?

I know, I know, I said I was done with this site - and I am (on a regular basis anyway) - but I guess this fantasy blogging stuff is just to damn hard to put down, and well… I kinda miss you guys.

Anyway, I wanted to throw this out there for you. Last night my buddy and I were throwing around some names of guys that we thought we would like to have on our team this year.

Read them over and see if you agree or disagree and then, in the coments below, throw down some of the names that may be circling around in your head.

Lee Evans WR (BUF) - While everyone in your league jumps all over the TO train, wait a round or two and grab Evans. He showed in the past that he can be a monster when there is someone else keeping the defence honest.

Roy Williams WL (DAL) - Remember him? He still has skills and the Cowboys will still have a good offense with or without TO. Roy will be the go to guy.

Percy Harvin WR (MIN) - I’m not as high on this guy as my buddy seems to be but there is no doubt the the Vikes intend to give him tohe opportunity to succeed. If he is as good as advertised, he could do just that.

Don’t break the bank on him because I really don’t see him as being much more than a bit player for your team. Kinda like a feast or famine type player. 2 plus TD’s one week and goose eggs for the next two.

Chris Henry WR (CIN) - With housh in Seattle and Palmer healthy, Chris Henry should get the opportunity to mix it up for the Bengals.

Jerome Harrison RB (CLE) - He is turning heads in Minicamp. Could he be a poor mans Leon Wahington for Mangini’s Browns?

Kyle Orton QB (DEN) - No he is not Jay Cutler but he has all the guys that Cutler had to through to and the same crappy defense to compensate for. How hard could it be to throw to a guy like Brandon Marshall?

I know this list is incomplete but that is were you come in. Help us build a nice list by posting your picks in the comments below.

But anyway, there ya go. That should start getting the fantasy gears turning.

OH! And one last thing before I go. Whether you are new or a Goat veteran, you will want to sign up for the new newsletter I set up (stop by the site if you are reading this elswhere). Why? Not only will I be sending out each posts but there will be time where I will send out some stuff that I don’t want to share with the world by posting live.

An Offer, a Farewell, a Thank You, and A FANTASY SPORTS BLOG Is Now FOR SALE

I just wanted to take a minute to let you know that after nearly two years of blogging about fantasy football, it is time for me to move on. But before I let you go I just want to thank you for making my ride a good one.

You read my posts, listened to my shows, and commented on my posts. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Now, before I let you go, please read on so that I can explain myself a bit, and then I want to make you an offer.

WHY NOW?

I wanted to wait 'til the end of the year to pull the plug author this post, but my heart just isn’t in it anymore. This was not an easy decision, since I love NFL football, I love fantasy, and I really enjoyed blogging about each but they are taking time away from other things that—I realize now—I love doing even more (my family and music - see Musicgoat.com).

Also, I figured it wasn’t fair to be giving you information that was not up to par. You deserve good information and there is no need for you to waste your time reading my half-hearted analysis when you could be checking out all of the other great fantasy blogs (see blogroll on the right).

WHAT NOW?

I am officially putting this blog up for sale. If you or anyone you know is looking to jump into the fantasy blogging game, there is no better way to start. I have done a ton of work for you already.

I have a wide distribution, I have built up tons of backlinks, have high ranking for keywords with good traffic and a solid, memorable brand (something about the word Goat that people always remember).

There is much more and I could go into more detail, but I’ll save it for interested parties. Just shoot me an email if you are interested. I will send you all the info you need.

OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU…

If you are interested in trying this whole blogging thing out, I invite you to write either a waiver wire post on Sunday or Monday. Or if you are the start-sit type, you could author your thoughts on who will get it done on Sunday.

Whatever you want to try, let me know, I’ll set you up. You can let all of the readers here see what kind of skills you have. A test drive with no strings attached. Who knows, you just might like it and it could turn into a full-time gig.

Again, I want to thank you for everything you’ve done to help make FantasyFootballGoat a success. I really do appreciate it. I wish you all luck for the remainder of the season.

Fantasy Football Start'em Sit'em and Sleeper Picks: Week 11

As the weeks go by, your lineup decisions get more and more important. From here on out, every decision—good or bad—is magnified by 10. Let me help you make sure your decision are the good kind. Here are my thoughts on six players you may be considering this Sunday.

Start em if you got em

Dwayne Bowe WR (KC) -The Chiefs have been putting some offense together lately. They are averaging almost 24 points a game in their last three. A big reason for that has been the play of quarterback Tyler Thigpen.

This week KC welcomes the reeling and battered 27th ranked Saints defense to Arrowhead. Look for Bowe to let it all hang out this week with 7-10 catches for 100+ yards and at least one touchdown.

Santana Moss WR (WAS) - Maybe this is obvious by now, but just in case you didn’t catch it, "Mini Moss" has made the 'Boys his beeatch lately. In his last three games against them, he’s grabbed 25 catches for 381 yards and two touchdowns. There is no reason that this should change Sunday night. Look for 100+ yards and one to two touchdowns.

Sit em if you got em

Willis McGahee RB (BAL) - When he's been healthy, Willis has posted some solid RB2 numbers this year. This week, though, don’t look for him to do much of anything against a Giants defense that has only allowed four rushing touchdowns all season. He’ll be lucky to get 50 yards and I doubt there will be a touchdown in his stat line come Monday.

Kerry Collins QB (TEN) - He looked great last week but look for the Titans to return to their roots and run the ball all Sunday. They play a Jaguars team that put Chris Johnson on the map and gave up 104 to Cedric Benson a few weeks ago. Collins will be back to around 175 yards and maybe a touchdown to Scaife.

Sleepers: Don’t be surprised if…

…Jerious Norwood RB (ATL) shares a chunk of the spotlight with the Burner. Look for him to go for 100+ total yards and get into the end zone at least once against a very soft 27th-ranked Denver rush defense.

…Mark Bradley WR (KC) continues his bid for late season uber-sleeper and pulls down stats in the neighborhood of Dwayne Bowe's.

More for you

Don’t forget to check this post again after the games. Every Monday or so, I go through and grade my performance based on the final stats so that you know how much stock you can put into my picks the following week.

Also, be sure to stop by and check out the Fantasy Football Librarians blog for her extremely thorough listing of start em, sit ems from around the web. I may have a few more for you too so check back later in the week.

Listen to this

Do you like to do more than just read? Grab your iPod or mp3 player and check out my start 'em sit 'em podcast. Each Thursday morning I put my start and sit ideas out in audio format. Not only do I offer up more insight on the picks above, BUT I add a few more players and discuss some injuries for you to keep an eye on.

Also, check out my Waiver Wire Live radio show over on Blog Talk Radio’s Fantasy Sports Network. I give you a ton of players that may be available to help your team out as well as give you an early bird preview of next weeks games.

Fantasy Football Sleeper and Waiver Wire Watch: Week 11

Alright, now that you and I have those pesky bye weeks out of the way, let’s start thinking playoffs and league championships. See if any of these guys belong in your train of thought.

May be available now…

Tyler Thigpen QB (KC) - Not to long ago, he was a desperation play. Boy has he come a long way. Three solid games in a row. This week, he went for 266 and three touchdowns (and no turnovers). The KC offense is playing well right now, and their schedule features some soft defenses with games against the Saint, Broncos, San Diego, and Cinci. You could do a lot worse if you are looking for a QB.

Brady Quinn QB (CLE) -He was solid in his debut and has a few decent matchups down the stretch if you are out of options.

Larry Johnson RB (KC) - It is possible that some owner in your league gave up on the guy. If so, why not grab him. The offense is playing pretty damn well, their schedule is fairly soft from this point on, and they are pretty much out of running backs. Who know what he will do when he returns this week from suspension to play the Saints, but why not throw him on the bench until you know for sure?

BenJarvis Green-Ellis RB (NE) - He may be gone by now, but it is starting to “look” like he is the man with his 26 carries for 105 and touchdown. Jordan was active, but whether Green-Ellis will do it when Morris is active is another story. Snatch him if he is out there; he could help you in a pinch.

Mark Bradley WR (KC) - He is officially off the “Keep an Eye on” list. He follows up four catches for 65 yards with one pass for 37 yards and a touchdown this week with nine catches for 81 yards and touchdown this week. He is at home against New Orleans this week. Grab him.

Matt Spaeth TE (PIT) - If Heath Miller misses more time with the high-ankle sprain, Spaeth is a solid option this coming week against the Chargers who for some reason let tight ends have there way with them.

Carolina Defense - They should be a good play this week at home against the Lions. No explanation needed.

Keep an eye on…

Shaun Hill QB (SF) - Came in for O’Sullivan after a bad interception. Not sure if he is the starter now, and I’m not sure how he will do if he is, but watch him this week. In a Mike Martz offense, he could present some value in deeper leagues or leagues that start two QBs.

Kerry Collins QB (TEN) - I am not sure how often he will throw 30 times, post close to 300 yards, and throw for two touchdowns, but it is worth keeping an eye on. More teams may dare them to throw, like the Bears did, and they do have a fairly soft schedule from here on out (especially during fantasy playoff time).

Dante Culpepper/Drew Stanton QB (DET) - I don’t know what to tell you if you are this desperate, except that one of these guys should come cheap and provide a warm body for a desperate lineup.

Malcome Floyd WR (SD) - He had four for 76 and a touchdown, but it is hard to get completely behind him when he is on a team with so many weapons.

Chad Johnson WR (CIN) - Is it possible someone in your league gave up on him? He caught two touchdowns against Jacksonville. He has a pretty stiff schedule but he could be worth a flier if the Bengals continue to improve.

Brandon Jones/Justin Gage WR (TEN) - Eight for 82 for Jones, four for 47 and a TD for Gage. Again, more teams may dare them to throw like the Bears did and they do have a fairly soft schedule from here on out (especially during fantasy playoff time).

Bo Scaife TE (TEN) - 10 for 78 and a touchdown (also see Collins, Jones and Gage). Should be fairly safe in spot duty.

Peyton Hills FB (DEN) - Could be the man by default since everyone else is injured.

Notable performances…

Nobody really jumped out at me this week...How about you? Did you see any one-week wonders?

Hear it live…

If you would like to hear an audio version of this post—and offer up an opinion yourself or ask a question—check out my live Internet radio show over on BlogTalkRadio.com. It is called Waiver Wire Live and it airs every Monday night at 10:30 PM EST (9:30 PM CST).

I will be discussing this list, reviewing last weeks entries, giving a sneak peak at next week's games, and taking questions via live chat and an exclusive call-in line. Stop by and check it out if you can.

Before you go…

If you haven’t had your fill just yet, the Fantasy Football Librarian will have her post listing waiver wire reports from all over the net. Also, The Hazean offers up his picks in his weekly “Grab Bag.” And last—and definitely not least—we have FootbalJabbers Weekly Waiver Wire Buffet.

Also, stop back because I will be updating throughout the week if and when anyone jumps out at me. Also, I know many of you see things that I don’t so feel free to throw down some of your thoughts below in the comments.

2 FREE Things You Can Do if You Don’t Make Your Fantasy Football Playoffs

If your fantasy squad didn’t quite perform like you thought is was gonna this year—and you are gonna miss your leagues playoffs because guys like Braylon Edward forgot how to catch—there is still a chance for you to compete if you haven’t quite had your fill—or not. Here are a few ideas that can help you fill the void this Sunday.

1) Join RotoHog.com
Why let all of that studying and knowledge go to waste. Go over to RotoHog.comand compete for some of those weekly prizes they are giving out. Top ten scores of the week get to pick out prizes like NFL jerseys, Nintendo Wii’s, Sony PSP’s and more.

I have been playing over there for over a year now and I love it. Stop in and see why I think it just might be the fairest way to play fantasy football.

2) Spend time with your family and/or friends
Each second you spend honing your squad is time spent away from family and friends. Maybe you could make good by spending some quality time with your gal and/or the family. Go to a movie or out to a nice restaurant to show them you still care.

Besides, the NFL play-offs will be here soon and you’ll need a few brownie points if you want to watch all the action.

There you have it; play some more fantasy with the boys over at RotoHog.comor spend some quality time with loved ones. Either way I don’t see how you can go wrong. Hell you could probably do both if you know your stuff.

Advertisement: Rotohog Fantasy Football Fair, Fun, Addicting and Free

BIGTIME Fantasy Football Start’em Sit’em and Sleeper Picks Week 10

Holy fricken cow! Can you believe it is already week ten? It won’t be long now and you will either be counting your cash and listening to your buddies heckle your losing ways. Lets work on the former.

Start em if you got em

DeAngelo Williams RB (CAR) - If you have DeAngelo Williams on your squad, you need to get him into your line-up this weekend. He has been getting a larger share of the work lately and he is at home against the 30th ranked Oakland rushing defense that was torn up by both of Atlanta’s running backs last week. Look for 150 all purpose yards and at least 1 touchdown.

Chad Pennington QB (MIA) - Chad has been playing great over the last few games and there is no reason for that to stop this week. The Seahawks are in town, they are ranked 31st against the pass and they don’t travel well - especially over 3 times zones. Chad should have a solid day if you are looking for some bye week love. I’m thinking 250 and 2 touchdowns.

Sit em if you got em

Matt Forte RB (CHI) - If Orton doesn’t play this week, you might also want to think about sitting Matt Forte of the Bears this week. You really don’t think Grossman is going to keep a disciplined Titans defense on their heels do you? I know he has been a rock star so far this season but the Titans are coming to town and they will be able to key on him all day without Orton at the helm. I know its a bold call but look for 50-75 all purpose and no touchdowns.

Nobody Else - I’m just feeling too positive, just one sit today.

Sleepers: Don’t be surprised if…

…Brady Quinn QB (CLE) has a solid outing versus the 27th ranked Denver passing defense that will be without its top corner Champ Bailey once again. And I say all that with the assumption that Braylon Edwards will CATCH the damn ball. I can see 275 and 2+ touchdowns in Brady’s future.

…Miami Dolphin D comes away with a bunch of sacks and a few turnovers against the struggling Seahawks. With the exception of a gift wrapped victory in San Fransisco a couple weeks ago, the Seahawks haven’t scored more than 10 points on the road all year. Meanwhile, the Phins are quietly racking up just over two sacks a game and forcing some turnovers. None of that should change this Sunday. 10 points allowed, 4 sacks and two turnovers that could lead to scores.

More for you

Don’t forget to check this post again after the games. Every Monday or so I go through and grade my performance based on the final stats so that you know how much stock you can put into my picks the following week.

Also, be sure to stop by and check out the Fantasy Football Librarians blog for her extremely thorough listing of start em, sit ems from around the web. I may have a few more for you too so check back later in the week.

Listen to this

Do you like to do more than just read? Grab your iPod or mp3 player and check out my start em sit em podcast. Each Thursday morning I put my start and sit ideas out in audio format. Not only do I offer up more insight on the picks above BUT I add a few more players and discuss some injuries for you to keep an eye on.

Also, check out my Waiver Wire Live radio show over on Blog Talk Radio’s Fantasy Sports Network. I give you a ton of players that may be available to help your team out as well as give you an early bird preview of next weeks games.

Stick around

Fantasy Football Sleeper and Waiver Wire Watch: Week 10

Well here we are; one last week of byes and we are in the home stretch. Let's see if there are any players available to help you through next week and beyond.

May Be Available Now

Sage Rosenfels QB (HOU)

If Schaub misses any time, Sage steps in. As explosive as the Houston offense is, he would be someone you would consider starting week to week. Grab him if it is not looking good for Schaub or if you own Schaub.

Dan Orlovsky QB (DET)

His 292-yard, two-touchdown performance versus the Bears on the road indicates that he could be a decent desperation play next week at home against a Jacksonville team that just laid a big one in Cinci. Oh, and he has Calvin Johnson to throw to.

Tyler Thigpen QB (KC)

He had 280 yards and two touchdowns against the Jets and then 164 passing with a touchdown and a 37-yard touchdown reception (yes, you read that right). The Chief seem to be moving the ball, and Kansas City plays pretty weak defenses from here on out. He may be worth a start next week against San Diego if you need some bye week help.

Tim Hightower RB (ARI)

He is probably gone, but check just in case. His first start got him 22 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown. If he continues to be the man, he will be a decent start almost every week on this offense.

Jamaal Charles RB (KC)

He went from questionable to playing and getting 106 yards against the Bucs' defense after Kolby Smith went out with an injury. Larry Johnson will not be playing next week since he is suspended and Kolby might still be out, so Jamaal could be a decent start against San Diego, as the Chiefs are putting together some offense.

Ray Rice RB (BAL)

Rice had 154 rushing yards and caught three passes for another 22 against Cleveland. If you have McGahee, you better have Rice. If you don’t have McGahee, you might want to find some room. He does have a bye next week.

Pierre Thomas/Aaron Stecker RB (NO)

With Reggie Bush out for a few weeks and Deuce McAllister facing a possible suspension for juicing it up, these guys will provide some decent fantasy production. I would be all over Pierre, but he didn’t really show much earlier in the season when he had a chance. That said, he does have the most upside of the two. Stecker is my choice in PPR leagues. He had five catches for 27 yards against the Bolts.

Kevin Faulk/Ben-Jarvis Green-Ellis RB (NE)

If Morris and Jordan continue to miss time, Faulk and Green-Ellis are going be solid plays as a RB3 or flex. If you can afford to keep one of these two on the bench, do it for spot duty.

Cedric Benson RB (CIN)

This is what I said last week: “The desperate owner's only deep league special. He is here because he starts but that is about it at this point.” So what does he do? He goes out and posts 104 and a touchdown. Not bad. He's worth a roster spot at this point, but he will be on a bye this week.

Billy Miller TE (NO)

For three weeks in a row, Billy has gone over the 50-yard mark (this week—seven catches for 82 yards). Not sure what's up with Shockey, but if he continues to battle injuries and be a pain in the ass, Miller looks like he could be a solid TE option going forward.

Miami D (SEA)

They have been causing turnovers, getting sacks, and generally making things rough for opposing offenses. Next week they get the horrible Seahawks at home. Seattle does not travel well, especially when they go two or three time zones.

Keep an Eye on

Rex Grossman QB (CHI)

If Orton misses any time with the sprained ankle, Grossman could be a decent play in deeper leagues (except maybe next week versus Tennessee).

Shaun Hill QB (SF)

Came in for O’Sullivan after a bad interception. Not sure if he is the starter now and I’m not sure how he will do if he is but watch him this week. In a Mike Martz offense he could present some value in deeper leagues or leagues that start two QBs.

Ryan Torain RB (DEN)

Didn’t do much against Miami—three carries for one yard—but with all of the preseason hype and Shanahan’s affinity for him, we should keep an eye out.

Chad Johnson WR (CIN)

Is it possible someone in your league gave up on him? He caught two touchdowns against Jacksonville. He is on a bye next week. After that he has a pretty stiff schedule but he could be worth a flier if the Bengals continue to improve.

Mark Bradley WR (KC)

He had four catches for 65 yards and one pass for 37 yards and a touchdown this week. The week before, he had five for 42 and a touchdown. They found a few ways to get him involved Sunday. He might be someone to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.

Brent Celek TE (PHI)

After catching six passes for 131 yards, he is definitely worth considering in spot duty if L.J. Smith misses more time.

Notable Performances

Peyton Hills FB (DEN)

Who? And did that say fullback? When he grabs seven catches for 116 yards and a touchdown we should take a minute to recognize him. Since he came out of nowhere it is hard to believe he will be worth much going forward. If I see something Thursday night in Cleveland maybe I’ll bump him up.

Koren Robinson WR (SEA)

The four catches for 106 and a touchdown is something that you might not see again this year...that is if Hasselbeck doesn’t return.

Derek Stanley WR (STL)

One catch for 80 yards and a touchdown. Pretend you never saw this.

Remember the Bye Weeks

This upcoming week: Bengals, Cowboys, Buccaneers, and Redskins.

Fistful of Fantasy Football Start 'em Sit 'em and Sleeper Picks Week Nine

Well we’ve passed the half way point and it is crunchtime my friend. It won’t be long now and you will either be counting your cash or listening to your wife, girlfriend or both complain about the fact that you don’t have any cash because you had to hand it all over to the commish.

No cash means you can’t take her to that fancy french joint and that you will have to settle for the Dollar Menu, a made-for-cable movie and, more than likely, old fisty.

Yep, the stakes are high and there is no time to waste. Here’s who will make or break you this Sunday.

Start 'em if you got 'em:

Kyle Orton QB (CHI) He plays winless Detroit for the second time this year and, if the first game was any indication (334 yards with two touchdowns), he shouldn’t have much of a problem laying the smack down. Look for another 300 yard with two+ touchdowns this weekend.

Maurice-Jones Drew RB (JAC) If you are an owner of MJD I feel for you. One week he is tearing it up, the next week he posts next to nothing. But, there is a pattern developing. Every time he faces a bottom feeding rush defense—Indy and Denver for example—he scores touchdowns and surpasses 100 yards. Every time he faces an above average rush defense—which has been every games besides the two I mentioned—he just plain sucks.

Fortunately for you, this week he faces a bottom feeder in 28th ranked Cinci. Put him in and get your 100 yards and one to two touchdowns.

Sit 'em if you got 'em:

Jamal Lewis RB (CLE) He will be running into what equates to a brick wall as he faces number one rushing defense in the league—and his old squad—the Baltimore Ravens. And yeah, yeah, yeah, I know he has been pretty solid the past few weeks BUT the last time he face the Ravens he was only able to scratch together a dismal 56 yards—and no score.

Expect similar numbers this week. Bottom line, that isn’t the kind of performance you need to make a playoff run.

Ryan Grant RB (GB) Perhaps I am pointing out the obvious here but just so you don’t get any ideas. Look for Grants 3.4 yards per rush average get even lower this week when he takes on the smothering Tennessee defense. Start him and you will be the proud owner of a 40 yard and zero performance touchdown.

Sleepers: Don’t be surprised if…

…Ted Ginn Jr. and Greg Camarillo WR (MIA) post solid numbers against a bad, 28th ranked and banged up Denver defense. I’m thinking five to seven catches, 75+ and one touchdown each.

…Tim Hightower RB (ARI) gets more of the work this week now that Edge is testing the patience both by fumbling during a crucial moment in last weeks game and by being a bitch by sayin he isn’t being used right (that’s old running back language for I should’ve never left Indy and I’m starting to suck). I’m thinking a nice solid 50 yards and a touchdown or two.

Grab your iPod or mp3 player and check out my start 'em sit 'em podcast. Each Thursday morning I put my start and sit ideas out in audio format.

Fantasy Football Sleeper and Waiver-Wire Watch: Week Eight

Wow! Can you believe it is already going to be Week Eight? We are almost halfway through the season, and for some of you, the fantasy playoffs are lurking closer and closer. Let's look at how you can shore up that roster to make sure you have the best options available when that time comes.

Check out who is available this week.

May be available now…

Trent Edwards QB (BUF) - He is performing every time he steps on to the field. This week against San Diego, he posted 261 yards with a touchdown. He may not be a QB1 yet, but he could come in very handy in a pinch—or in spot duty—with a pretty soft schedule from here on out.

Matt Ryan QB (ATL)—Don’t forget about Matt. He gets the Eagles this week and then three very favorable matchups in Oakland, New Orleans, and Denver. If you have a player on a bye, one of those weeks, you might want to grab him and stash him now.

Aaron Stecker/Deuce McAllister/Pierre Thomas RB (NO) - At this time, it looks like Reggie Bush will be missing at least four to six weeks with a knee injury. That means more playing time for one—or all—of these guys. I like Stecker in PPR leagues because of his pass-catching skills, but the other two will get carries as well.

Derrick Mason WR (BAL) - This week, he had six for 87 and a TD. Due to the fact that he has a rookie throwing to him, he won’t have the number consistently, but he is solid against lesser defenses. He would make any bench a better bench.

Bernard Berrian WR (MIN) - He continues to score and post solid yardage and receptions totals, so I have moved him from keep an eye on to may be available. This week he scored his third touchdown in as many weeks. He will have his chances again against Houston when he returns from this weeks bye.

Greg Olson TE (CHI) - Orton looked to him often versus the Vikes, and he has developed into a solid contributor in this offense over the past few weeks. With six for 74 and a touchdown this week, he should be on someones roster. Why not yours?

Mercedes Lewis TE (JAC) - From last weeks post: He has been getting plenty of targets over the past few weeks but was having trouble holding on to the ball. Sunday he held on to three of them for 64 yards and his second TD in as many weeks. Here are his next three matchups: Cleveland, Cinci, and Detroit. Not bad.

Washington D - They are good on defense, they play Detroit this week, and may be available in your league.

New York Jets D - They too are pretty decent on defense, they get Kansas City at home this week and they may be available in your league.

Keep an eye on…

Gus Frerotte QB (MIN) -The Vikes head into a bye this week but will return against Houston’s soft defense in a few weeks. If you do not get docked for interceptions, Gus may be a decent option in a pinch.

Marc Bulger QB (STL) - I am sure he has been dropped in many leagues, so keep an eye on him. He hasn’t had a huge day yet, but the schedule gets easier.

Ahman Green RB (HOU) - I almost didn’t believe what I was seeing when he vultured a TD from Slaton in the first quarter, but after getting 62 yards, maybe there is something to it.

Kolby Smith/Jamaal Charles RB (KC) - For really desperate owners only. L.J. is in trouble again, and these guys should see increased action if he gets suspended by the league. Not the greatest players to have, but they are living, breathing running backs and could come in handy in deep league when playing weak run defenses.

Marty Booker WR (CHI) - Had three catches for 79 yards with a touchdown. He also dropped two touchdowns, which is one reason I can’t see him doing anything consistently, but if injuries to Hester and Lloyd linger, Booker could get his in the offense.

Josh Morgan WR (SF) - Five receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown. Many poeple—including myself—were pretty high on this rookie before the season, when he posted good numbers during the preseason. He hasn’t done much until this week but watch him. Maybe he is getting the hang of the pro game.

Donnie Avery WR (STL) - With a five-for-65-yard-with-a-touchdown performance against the 'Boys, he seems to be developing a nice relationship with Bulger and the resurgent Rams offense. And the schedule only gets easier for them. Keep an eye out.

Mike Furrey WR (DET) - Six for 89 against Houston. Now that Roy Williams is gone, maybe Furrey will have more games like this—which would really only benefit you if you are in a deep PPR league and none of the players above were available.

Notable performances…

Javon Walker WR (OAK) - Five for 75 and a touchdown against the Jets. It will take more than one or two games to make me believe he has anything to offer.

Remember the bye weeks…

This upcoming week: Broncos, Bears, Vikings, Packers

Hear it live…

If you would like to hear an audio version of this post—and offer up an opinion yourself or ask a question—check out my live Internet radio show over on BlogTalkRadio.com.

Fantasy Football Sleeper and Waiver Wire Watch Week Four

Can you believe how crazy this season is? Denver loses to Kansas City. Favre and Coles both questionable early only to go on to light up the Cards for 56. Braylon Edwards finally gets a touchdown in Week Four. And Washington, looking as bad as they did Week One, goes into Dallas and wins. Damn!

As hard as it is to predict any of this mayhem, there are still plenty of safe bets when it comes to grabbing guys off of the waiver wire. Look at what I have for you today.

May be available now…

Kyle Orton (QB) - I can’t believe I am saying this—but since the man played lights out versus the Eagles and was alright against the Buc’s—he may be a viable option against the Lions next weekend if you are in a pinch.

Jason Campbell QB (WAS) - He goes into Texas Stadium and takes down the Cowboys with a solid 231 yards and two touchdown performance. It is unlikely that he is available anymore but if he is, maybe you could use him. He has Philly next week, then excellent match-ups against St. Louis, Cleveland and Detroit.

Steve Slaton RB (HOU) - It may be too late but if you don’t have him—and he is available for some reason—grab him NOW! This week he doesn’t get 100 on the ground but he was a big part of the passing game with 8 catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Ronnie Brown RB (MIA) - Don’t forget about him. Check if he is available. He gets San Diego at home this week. They will give him a few opportunities.

Lance Moore WR (NO)- For two weeks in a row he has been Brees’ main target. I think it is time to get him in your line-up. Seven catches for 78 yards last week and seven for 101 and two touchdowns this week.

Kevin Walter WR (HOU) - He is one of Schaub (and Rosenfels) favorite targets. Last week he has targeted often and this week he goes for eight for 76 yards and two touchdowns (three TD’s this year). If the Texans passing attack is on its way back, Walter will be a big part of their success. Games against Indy, Miami and Detroit coming up.

Steve Breaston WR (ARI) - If Boldin misses anytime, grab this guy. He had nine catches for 122 against the Jets.

Muhsin Muhammad WR (CAR) - Eight for 147 and one touchdown. I don’t see him getting these numbers every week but after a performance like this, he proved that he can still get it done with the right match-up.

Bobby Engram and Deion Branch WR (SEA) - Both are expected to return to action this week and should be able to help out if you need a bye week replacement at receiver. I personally am leaning more toward Engram—who clearly gets the edge in PPR leagues—but Branch is the big play threat. Seattle-reciever-would-you-rather-have-on-your-points-per-reception-team_168677">A poll I did on Rootzoo seems to indicate that most poeple are leaning towards Engram as well.

Matt Jones WR (JAC) - I avoided him for as long as I could but he just won’t go away. A decent five for 71 with a touchdown means that he could be a solid bye week WR3 option going forward.

Amani Toomer and Dominik Hixon WR (NYG) - These are a few of the guys that are going to have to pick up the slack this week during Burress’s suspension. One or both should see plenty of action if you are looking for a bye week replacement.

Antonio Bryant WR (TB) - 10 for 138 with Galloway out. Looks to me like we could have Griese’s favorite target. Could make a solid WR3 if Galloway continues to miss time.

Zach Miller TE (OAK) - Many people were high on him coming into the season but he has done next to nothing until this week. He pulled down five catches for 95 yards and scored a touchdown. He could be available if you need a tight end but before you grab him, be aware that he is on a bye this week.

Keep an Eye on…

Matt Schaub QB (HOU) - Finally living up to his preseason billing. 307 yards with three touchdowns. If he can post solid number next week versus Indy, he has good match-ups against Miami and Detroit the following two weeks.

Brady Quinn QB (CLE) - Derek Anderson should be fine for now after getting the victory but he isn’t completely off of the hot seat quite yet. Just keep an eye out.

Matt Flynn QB (GB) - If Aaron Rodgers shoulder keeps him out, this should be the Packs new starting quarterback. Hard to say what he will be able to do—see Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco—but he does have some solid receivers and you would only be using him in deep leagues and desperate spots (at least until you see what he can do).

Michael Bush RB (OAK) - If injuries continue to slow down McFadden and Fargas, Bush is someone to keep an eye on and could even be a solid option in deeper leagues. He only had 14 carries for 48 yards on the ground but had seven catches for 80 yards.

Deuce McAllister RB (NO) - One week it is Pierre Thomas and then Deuce jumps in so I don’t know what to tell you except watch what happens over the next few weeks before putting too much stock in either.

Robert Meachem WR (NO) - Two for 99 and a touchdown. The man has two touchdowns in three games and is averaging around 40 yards a catch. Can he keep it up? We’ll see.

Brandon Stokley WR (DEN) - You would thin it would be hard to get much action with Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall around but he still hauled in seven catches for 80 yards this week. He may be a decent spot starter now BUT if Royal or Marshall went down, he would be a solid pick-up.

Arnez Battle WR (SF) - Bryant Johnson wasn’t full strength in this one and Battle stepped in to put up seven catches for 120. Lets see if he can do it against the Patriots next week.

Miles Austin WR (DAL) - Everyone was gah-gah over this guy last week after his performance against the Pack. I was and still am going to wait and see even after this Week Three's 45 and a TD performance. To many places to go with the ball.

Washington D - They haven’t gotten the sacks but they held the Cowboys juggernaut in check for most of the game and collected a pick and fumble. They have Philly next week, then excellent match-ups against St. Louis, Cleveland and Detroit

Notable performances…

Justin Gage WR (TEN) - I recommended him a few weeks ago just in time for him the following game with an injury. This week he returned to go five for 92 versus the Vikes. But Baltimore is next and then the Titans have a bye. There are other players above that can help you more than Gage will over the next few weeks.

Patrick Crayton WR (DAL) - Seven for 87 yards. As with Miles Austin I think there is just to many “better” targets on the Cowboys to be able to depend on someone like Crayton…and he doesn’t have the upside Austin does.

Remember the bye weeks…

This upcoming week: St. Louis, New York Jets, Cleveland, Oakland

Hear it live…

If you would like to hear an audio version of this post - and offer up an opinion yourself or ask a question - check out my live Internet radio show over on BlogTalkRadio.com.
Dubz is Thinking: This Past Week Is Why We Love Football

Contributor: James “Dubz” Cross is a fantasy football blogging veteran, hip hop head and BBQ master. You can find him on a regular basis on his blog DoubleDanger.com.

I can say I haven’t seen a week of football as fun, exciting and overall BADASS in a looooooooooong time. Got to watch the Colts come back on the Vikes (sorry Corey), Denver in their questionable win (but still totally awesome to go for 2 right?) and the SKINS finally use some of their weapons to win a game! The cherry on top of the Sunday (that is called a pun folks)… the shootout of all shootouts on Monday Night Football. What a game. Being a Skins fan, I have to hate both the Eagles & Cowboys - but what a freakin’ game. Hope you took the over in that one like I did, covered in the first half. Needless to say (but I will say it anyhow), this is why we love football so much isn’t it?

“The Mistake Heard ‘Round The World.”

I read that Ed Hochuli was emailing his apologies to everyone. Emailing. His. Apology. Why not just text everyone. If so, I bet it would go down like this.

yo norv. crzy call @ the fb game huh?!? lol omg im sry for da dramz. ttyl homie

Or something like that. **shrugs**

“The ’Burner’ Cools Off, Did You Sell High?”

What happened to Michael Turner… did you sell high like you should have? Makes you wonder if it was the runner or the run defense in week 1 right? I’m telling you, should have sold by now, maybe you can get another week out of him and then trade up. I’m just saying.

“John Kitna Went From Hero To Zero In Minutes.”

Story of his life though right? This dude definitely is one of those love/hate type of players. How many times has the Lions been trailing by 20 points late in the 3rd quarter and you tune it out. When you look over there 5 minutes later, they took the lead on 3 Kitna throws. Wait… no one watches the Lions, what am I talking about. **snicker**

“How’s That #1 Pick Doing For Ya?”

LaDainian owners are patiently waiting for a healthy LT. Got an extra day this week - hope it helps. Well, actually I don’t own him… so all it could mean for me is someone beats me with LT on their roster racking up TDs. Now Peterson has a sore hammy… those first two picks are looking lame at the moment. They always do though. Then they bust out with 5 FREAKIN’ TDS IN ONE GAME. And everyone hates them. Except the owners. I’m loving my Westbrook pick though at #3, how about your pick? Satisfied? LT owners, remember last years Jets game? Do some research.

“Jay Cutler’s The #1 QB In Fantasy Football - And You Drafted Brady.”

Brady seemed like the no-brainer pick, and I know what your going to say… “Dude, you can’t predict injuries.” No crap. I’m just saying that the price that people took Cutler for, compared to Brady… night/day. ROI on those two… night/day. That is all I’m saying.

“DeSean Jackson Is Good And Bad At The Same Time.”

I own him. I like him. But for the same reasons I like him, I don’t like him. Does that make sense? Prolly not. Maybe I’m drunk again. He’s flashy, fast and hauls in some balls. His fantasy value is not a question… unless you count the fact he threw away 6 of your points for absolutely no reason at all. Yeah, that kind of sucks. Makes you wonder if he is a T.O. or Chad Johnson in the making. Costly penalties loom in his future. Dropped passes that should have been TDs. You know how it is. One thing you can’t knock him for though, he has 2 games in the NFL - both over 100 yards. It has been over 60 years since a player has done that. That has to count for something.

Let’s see if we have a suitable encore to last week, it will be hard to top. However we have the makings of a great week. Eagles & Steelers, Jets & Chargers on MNF and the Broncos & Saints in another Mile High Shootout. Don’t forget about the Sunday night game with the Packers and Cowboys. I think I am going to take the over in that game too. Going to be big I think. Wait - it’s in Lambeau huh… crap. Good luck this week fellow Goats.

What Do You Think? Readers Roundtable Week 2

These guys need some help and I know that you and I both can provide enough piece of mind to help them make the right decision.

Check them out and lets here your take in the comments below.

Mike asks…

Ive got a few questions.
Should I trade Brett Favre/Willis McGahee for Braylon Edwards?
My roster as of today looks like this:
QB: Peyton Manning
QB/Bn: Brett Farve
RB1/2/3: Clinton Portis, Reggie Bush, Matt Forte
RB/Bn: Willis Mcgahee, Sammie Morris
WR1/2: Dwayne Bowe, Reggie Brown
W/T: Chris Cooley
WR/Bn: Reggie Williams, Michael Jenkins, Kevin Walter
K: John Carney
Def: Jacksonville

My take…

Mike, I can see why you are considering it. A lot of things I would need to know to making a final decision (how many RBs do you start, what QBs are available on your waiver wire, and scoring system). But if you can get a decent back up for Manning, you could defintely use a little help at WR and your depth at RB allows you to part with McGahee. I would do it to get yourself a solid WR1.

Don Quixote asks…

Probably not the forum, but will take anyone’s advice.

The fellow in our league with Brady wants my QB Eli Manning.

I’m thinking of offering him Eli and TJ Housh for Aaron Rodgers and Plaxico.

Am I crazy, or is Plaxico’s upside worth taking a chance on Rodgers (I have Delhomme as a backup)?

The guy that offered me the trade also has Larry fitzgerald and had tom brady so he needs a qb and has no true starting RB. What should I do? Take Edwards or fitzgerald?

My take…

Edwards? Not sure where that came from. But I think I get the jist. Over the long haul, I like Rodgers and Plax (or Fitz) better than Housh and Eli. Plax’s upside is good and Rodgers looked decent enough where you really aren’t taking a chance on him.

There ya have it. I want to thank Mike and Don for stopping and most of all you for helping all of us out. Next week I think I might try to throw together a cheat sheet of some kind so that I can answer all of your start sit questions faster.

See ya Sunday night with waiver wire pick-ups.

Big-Time Fantasy Football Sleepers and Waiver-Wire Watch: Week Two

I hope you had a solid opening day. Lots of surprises, disappointments, and head-scratchers. Either way, football's back baby, and it is time to start looking at next week!

Other than Brady going down, and Atlanta’s domination of the Lions, the biggest surprise this week was the amount of tight ends on the list below.

Check it out.

May be available now…

Matt Cassel QB (NE) - I am sure that if you have Brady, you are on top of this. If not, get on it. If you don’t have Brady, look anyway and see if you can steal him. He is not Brady, but he didn’t look too bad, and he does have Moss and Welker.

Also, stay tuned on this one. There are many rumors already floating around about Chris Simms and even Dante Culpepper.

Chris Johnson RB (TEN) - If by some chance you or nobody else has this guy, GRAB HIM NOW. So far he looks like the rock star everyone is making him out to be. A solid 93 yards on 15 carries to go along with three catches for 34 yards and a TD. With Cincy up next, he should be a shoe in for another big performance.

Felix Jones RB (DAL) - He looked very good. His first NFL carry was a very determined 11 yard run (62 yards and a TD overall). A must-handcuff to MB3 and possible spot or flex starter in deeper leagues. UPDATE: MB3 has a rib injury.

Pierre Thomas RB (NO) - Looks like they may be rolling with Thomas instead of Deuce. Only had 10 carries for 52 against a decent Tampa D but is an excellent handcuff or even a decent play against lesser opponents in a crunch.

DeSean Jackson WR (PHI) - Can a rookie wide receiver get it done? So far, I think we have an answer. Six catches for 106 yards. If by chance he is laying around out there, grab him.

Dante Rosario TE (CAR) - Best thing to hit Carolina since Wesley Walls? Not sure about that, but he had a HUGE game, grabbing the game-winning catch with time running off the clock. Seven for 96 and a TD.

Anthony Fasano TE (MIA) - One of my preseason sleepers goes for eight for 84 and a TD in a loss to the Jets.

Robert Royal TE (BUF) - Another one of my preseason sleepers goes for six for 52 and a TD. Edwards seems to like him, and if you need a TE, maybe you should too.

Jon Kasay K (CAR) - I don’t talk about kickers much, but I get the feeling Kasay could be a nice addition if you are looking for a solid kicker. Carolina showed they can move the ball and will be playing in some tight games. Four FGs and Two PATs against San Diego.

Carolina's D - Are at home against the Bears.

Buffalo's D - Five sacks, two turnovers, one PA, and a kickoff return by the solid, fairly unknown returner Roscoe Parrish. A performance like that and a fairly easy schedule after Jacksonville next week means that they would make a nice pick-up, if available.

Keep an Eye on…

Chad Pennington QB (MIA) - Didn’t look to bad with 251 and two TDs. Let's see how he does on the road in Arizona next week.

Damon Huard QB (KC) - He couldn’t win it in the end—although Bowe did drop the tying touchdown—but he will be the guy if Croyle is out. DEEP LEAGUES ONLY for now.

Kerry Collins QB (TEN) - If Vince Young can’t go, Collins might be alright in deeper leagues. Good matchup versus the Bengals next week.

Sammy Morris RB (NE) - Seems to be a favorite of the coaches in the red zone. And if Brady is out, there could be more of a commitment to the run.

Tim Hightower RB (ARI) - TD only or handcuff to Edge.

LaRon McLain RB (BAL) - All the talk about Ray Rice only to have this guy come in and outperform him with 19 carries for 86 yards on the ground and two for 24 in the air. If McGahee continues to worry you, you may want to add this guy.

Notable performances…

Matt Jones WR (TEN) - I am not willing to go all in with him due to his track record—and the fact that Jerry Porter has yet to suit up for the Jags—but a solid six-for-80 performance.

Bo Scaife TE (TEN) - Six catches for 105 yards. He is a favorite of Vince Young (possibly out) and has Crumpler around, so I’ll take a wait and see. Besides, there are plenty of tight ends help available above.

Hear it live…

If you would like to hear an audio version of this post, offer up an opinion or ask a question, check my live internet radio show over on BlogTalkRadio.com.

Fantasy Football's Start 'em, Sit 'em and Sleeper Picks for Week One

Are you ready for some fantasy football?

Me too.

Week One is finally here, and it is time to get you thinking about who should and who shouldn’t be in your lineup this Sunday.

Let’s get it rolling with this weeks picks

Start 'em If You Got 'em

Jon Kitna, QB (DET)

Pass-happy Mike Martz is now looking to maim quarterbacks in San Francisco, and a commitment to the running game is on the docket for the Motor City Kitties, but that doesn’t mean that ol’ Jon can’t git 'r done.

He still has the presence of both Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams. That alone will make him a valuable spot-starter for the savvy fantasy owner in 2008.

Look for Kitna and company to abuse a very young and rebuilding Atlanta secondary with 300+ yards passing and at least three TDs.

Joey Galloway, WR (TB)

He absolutely torched the Saints last year, with games of 135 and 156 yards, to go along with two touchdowns. The Saints did not do a whole lot in the offseason to correct the issues in the secondary.

Don’t worry that Garcia and Galloway didn’t get to much playing time in the preseason. They are vets and will be ready to go this Sunday. Look for five catches for 100+ and a TD for Joey.

Sit 'em If You Got 'em

Chad Ocho Cinco WR (CIN)

Not only is he one hit away from being knocked out of the game—with a bad ankle and torn labrum—but historically, he is very subpar versus the Ravens. In the last five games versus Baltimore, he only has two touchdowns.

Look for a couple nice shots from Ray Lewis and something in the neighborhood of four catches for 55 yards and zero touchdowns.

Vince Young QB (TEN)

In four games versus the Jags, he has a passer rating of—are you sitting down—51.4 and two touchdowns to six interceptions. The Jags have problems rushing the passer, but when you don’t have much of a passing game, it really doesn’t matter.

I wouldn’t start him if I had to start two quarterbacks, with stats like 175 passing, zero passing touchdowns and two interceptions.

Sleepers: Don’t Be Surprised If...

...Antonio Bryant, WR (TB) has a top-10 fantasy performance against the Saints' defense (see Galloway above). He’s a good blocker, so he’ll be on the field a lot. Gruden really likes this guy, and everyone said he was a standout during camp. Look for four catches for 75+ and a TD.

...Darren McFadden, RB (OAK) and Justin Fargas, RB (OAK) both post solid numbers Monday night. In fact, you could probably get away with starting both of these guys against the Broncos.

Denver was atrocious against the run last year and didn’t really do a whole lot to upgrade it in the offseason. Last December, Fargas ran 33 times for 146. This week, look for 75+ and a TD from Fargas, and 100+ and a TD from McFadden (oh, and look for Michael Bush to vulture at least one TD).

Don’t forget to check this post again after the games. Every Monday or so I'll go through and grade my performance, based on the final stats, so that you know how much stock you can put into my picks the following week.

Also, be sure to stop by and check out the Fantasy Football Librarian's blog for her extremely thorough listing of start 'em and sit 'ems from around the web. I may have a few more for you too, so check back later in the week.

Last Call

It is not too late to join my free fantasy football league and you get your chance to win $100 of my cash—and much more of someone else’s by the way. See how you can sign up free for my 2008 Fantasy Football Goat Rotohog League here.

2008 Fantasy Football Sleepers and Value Picks, Vol. Two

In last week's Vol. One, I got your fantasy-drafting wheels turning. This week, I look to put the pedal a little closer to the floor, as you and I drive closer to our drafts.

Round two of my sleepers and value picks is a result of many, many more hours of searching the web for info, some of your suggestions and comments, watching any preseason games I can, and scanning box scores.

Let's not waste any more time. Here you go.

Quarterbacks

Tarvaris Jackson (MIN)

As both a Viking fan and guys who plays in a two-QB league, I am very encouraged by T-Jacks first action in the preseason. The play calls were almost all passes—seven straight plays to start the game—and Tarvaris was able to move the ball well.

He had a few questionable throws, but overall, he and the receiving corps looked very solid against Seattle's first teamers.

With the first teams still playing early, one play in the red zone stood out, which to me bumps up T-Jack a few notches. The whole defense keyed on A.P.—which will happen A LOT—meanwhile, T-Jack bootlegged right and threw a perfect little dump pass to a wide-open Thomas Tapeh for a TD.

A couple more performances like that and he could creep in the QB2 territory. At this point, I would say he is definitely worth a flier in the late rounds if you have any room for a third QB.

Running Backs

DeAngelo Williams (CAR)

A value pick fore sure, he'll be going late in most drafts (in the RB3 range). Coaches have been commenting on him becoming more vocal and more of a leader in the locker room. You could get a solid RB2 for the price of an RB3 or RB4.

Look for his value to start creeping up after nine carries for 55 yards and two red-zone TDs in his first preseason game.

Ray Rice (BAL)

The combination of McGahee having knee problems and new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron's reputation for making backs successful (you may be familiar with LaDanian Tomlinson and Ronnie Brown last year) are just a few reasons this guy has been slowly popping up on everyone's radar.

If you take McGahee, this guy is a definite handcuff. If you don’t have McGahee, Rice might be a nice steal in a later round to stash on the roster. Also, encouraging for you PPR guys, four catches in his preseason debut.

Tim Hightower (ARI)

Edgerrin sucks in the red zone lately. Did you know he had 60 touches inside the red zone last year and was only able to come away with seven scores (not good unless you have the Cardinals' kicker).

If the first preseason game is any indication, perhaps the Arizona coaching staff sees the same thing. Hightower, working with the first-team offense, scored from the one. Short-yardage TD vulture in the making? We’ll see.

Wide Receivers

Robert Meachum (NO)

There are a lot of hands looking for the ball in the Big Easy, but Meachum looks like he is ready to contribute (four for 129 and a TD last weekend). Will he put up numbers week in and week out? I doubt it, BUT I would expect some big games here and there in WR3 spot duty.

Dwayne Jarrett (CAR)

Hackett’s been on the bike and Smith is out for two games, so why not take a late flier on a guy who has been impressing in camp. He could be counted on the first few games with Smith out, and a few confidence-boosting games early could provide a nice little bump to the rest of his season (or career).

Definitely A guy...you and I...can keep an eye...on the rest of the preseason (cheesy, but couldn’t resist). So far, three catches for 43 yard in preseason action against the Colts.

Johnnie Lee Higgins (OAK)

Here’s sort of a deep sleeper for you to consider. With Javon Walker scaring the daylights out of anyone with his retirement talk, Ron Curry being banged up as usual, and the Raiders' dominant run game, why not Higgins?

The man is fast and has a nose for the big play (had a 52-yard punt return for a TD and one brought back in Friday's preseason game). With defenses constantly worried about Fargas, McFadden, and Bush, there should be a few deep routes open for Higgins and Russell to exploit.

Tight End

Dustin Keller (NYJ)

Erik Boland, who writes about the Jets for Newsday, observed a “general unstopable-ness” in a scrimmage last week. And this was before Favre showed up. Wonder what he could do with weapon like that? Anyways, it is definitely something to watch for and possibly worth a late-round flier in the TE2 department.

Defense

Washington

They are not even showing up in the ADP ranking on FantasyFootballCalculator. Not sure why because they were solid last year and any team that has Jason Taylor rushing the QB is worth a roster spot.

There ya go. Don’t forget to check out 2008 fantasy football sleepers and value picks Vol. One if you haven’t had the chance.
2008 Fantasy Football Bloggers Mock Draft Final Results

Here is another post to help you get those rusty, fantasy gears oiled and moving again. I have a quick little four-round mock draft for you to look over, to get an idea of how some fantasy savvy bloggers/writers and I value many of the top players.

The scoring format was based on a standard system, other than the fact that QBs will get six points per TD.

If you are wondering about my picks, they are in boldface lettering, and I will provide a little insight as to why I chose them below (your thoughts are encouraged).

Oh, and one more thing, make sure you stop by each of these blogs and add them to your reader or sign up for email updates—links to the sites are in the first round.

That way you will never, EVER miss even a morsel of fantasy football information from now until you are counting your first-place cash.

Check it out!

My Round-One Choice

I was all over Marshawn Lynch until Matt and Brandon over at FFGeeksBlog wisely picked him just before me (props to them), which led me to take Larry Johnson.

I’m not crazy about taking him, considering the laundry list of question marks surrounding his supporting staff; the line, the QB, and experience in general. But he’s the best player on his team (equaling touches), an every-down back (rare these days), and has a schedule filled with “projected” weak run D’s.

Add to that the fact that you gotta think he’ll be playing with a chip on his shoulder after a dismal 2007. I’ll take my chances.

My Round-Two Choice

I took T.O. The running back pool drops off right here, and I think I can get some decent value later. I was thinking QB, with six-points per TD, but again, I think there will be some value in the later rounds.

I am going to make sure I have a solid WR1 and take Terrell Owens before they get run on (long time 'til my next pick).

My Round-Three Choice

I was not that excited about any of the running backs, left and I think there is some good value at QB to be had in the later rounds. So, I am going to take Santonio Holmes.

He’s a No. 1 on a fairly pass-happy team, and he seems to get a little better every year. In my opinion, he is a very solid WR2 (arguably even a low-end WR1).

My Round-Four Choice

I took Ernest Graham. A potentially reduced workload with Warrick Dunn in town presents some risk, but he is a good value in round four. And I don’t think Cadillac will be a factor—at least until much later on in the season.

Bottom line, he's a very solid RB2, who runs behind a good offensive line and plays on a team that will run and play ball-control against an accommodating schedule.

Again, I invite any comments or questions you might have.

There you have it. I want to thank all the bloggers and writers that participated. And most importantly, I want to thank you for reading this.

Minnesota Vikings Stake Claim To Top Offensive Line in NFC North

The Minnesota Vikings may have made a big splash in the off season by acquiring defensive lineman Jared Allen from Kansas City, but the team’s biggest asset is on the offensive side of the ball.

The Vikings are not only the top-rated offensive line in their conference and division, but they might very well be the best in the National Football League.

With Adrian Peterson, an improving young quarterback in Tavaris Jackson and the addition of wide receiver Bernard Berrian, Minnesota is set to pillage and plunder opposing defenses. And without the big horses up front, none of that would be possible.

Minnesota Vikings (First in NFC North, first in Conference)

As stated above, the combination of Bryant McKinnie, Steve Hutchinson and Matt Birk give the Vikings the best left side in the NFL. That shady free agent signing of Hutchinson with the poison pill added to the contract looks huge now.

LT Bryant McKinnie
LG Steve Hutchinson
C Matt Birk
RG Anthony Herrera
RT Ryan Cook

Green Bay Packers (Second in NFC North, fourth in Conference)

A few years ago Brett Favre was going to retire because this line didn’t have enough talent to compete. Well, last year they dominated, giving Favre plenty of time to operate while opening holes for little-known running back Ryan Grant as he burst on the scene.

LT Chad Clifton
LG Junius Coston
C Scott Wells
RG Jason Spitz
RT Mark Tauscher

Chicago Bears (Third in NFC North, sixth in Conference)

This is a gritty but aging group up front, but the addition of first-rounder Chris Williams (14th overall) should help ease the pain. Now if only they could find a quarterback, and a running back.

LT Chris Williams
LG Terrence Metcalf
C Olin Kreutz
RG Roberto Garza
RT John Tait

Detroit Lions (Fourth in NFC North, 14th in Conference)

This group looked good in the first half of 2007, but they faded badly down the stretch to ensure that quarterback Jon Kitna’s promise of 10 wins went unfulfilled. The addition of first-round pick Gosder Cherilus (17th overall) should help.

LT Jeff Backus
LG Edwin Mulitalo
C Dominic Raiola
RG Stephen Peterman
RT Gosder Cherilus

Well we are almost home, just one more division left before we round out the the series. But hey don’t let that stop you from becoming a regular Goat reader—which by the way is very easy—and almost effortless for you to do because…

NFC West Offensive Lines: Staying Healthy Key To Success

This division lacks a little up front, and the effort trickles down from there. Subpar efforts and lack of healthy players on the line and in the backfield have created an uphill battle for these west coast teams. That said, Seattle and St. Louis have been the most successful teams from this division, and that success is tied to the guys up front. Consider how much the loss of Orlando Pace hurt the Rams last year.

Seattle Seahawks (1st in NFC West, 7th in Conference)
If you want a safe bet on draft day, then grab whoever emerges as the lead runner for the Seahawks. The lack of production last year had more to do with the decline of Shaun Alexander than it had to do with the linemen.

LT Walter Jones
LG Mike Wahle
C Chris Spencer
RG Ray Sims
RT Sean Locklear

St. Louis Rams (2nd in NFC West, 8th in Conference)
Obviously a healthy Orlando Pace will go a long way toward improving the play of his unit from a year ago, but a healthy quarterback (Marc Bulger) and running back (Steven Jackson) need to return to form this year for the team to turn the corner on offense.

LT Orlando Pace
LG Mark Setterstrom
C Brett Romberg
RG Richie Incognito
RT Alex Barron

Arizona Cardinals (3rd in NFC West, 13th in Conference)
This group is still finding its way as they try to build around Levi Brown, but expect marked improvement from this unit in 2008 with Russ Grimm leading the way.

LT Mike Gandy
LG Reggie Wells
C Al Johnson
RG Deuce Lutui
RT Levi Brown

San Francisco (4th in NFC West, 15th in Conference)
They seem to have solid tackles in Joe Staley and Jonas Jennings, though Jennings has had a hard time staying on the field due to injury. They should improve from another year of playing together as a unit, but who they will be blocking for is a guess with quarterback Alex Smith and running back Frank Gore both needing to prove they can stay healthy.

LT Joe Staley
LG Adam Snyder
C Eric Heitmann
RG Daavid Baas
RT Jonas Jennings

This is another post in a series in which we go division by division looking at and ranking the most overlooked factor in the success of your fantasy football squad, the offensive line. So you might want to keep an eye out over the next few weeks - which by the way, I have made it easy for you to do because…

AFC South: Not All O-Lines Are Created Equal

The Jacksonville offensive line is a mean unit that sets the tone for its offense. In Indianapolis, the Peyton-Manning-led Colts thrive on the quick thinking of their quarterback. Either way, both offensive lines produce great results with completely different formulas.

Moral of the story: It might not matter how you win, just as long as you find a way to win. Expect Jacksonville and Indianapolis to again make the playoffs and for their respective skill-players to shine in 2008, thanks to the contributions on the offensive line.

Conversely, Tennessee and Houston will struggle because of the lack of talent up front.

Jacksonville Jaguars (First in AFC South, Second in Conference)
This unit brings its lunch pail every Sunday, taking on the hard-nosed style of its coach. They consistently open huge holes for the two-headed monster known as Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew.

LT Khalif Barnes
LG Vince Manuwai
C Brad Meester
RG Maurice Williams
RT Tony Pashos

Indianapolis Colts (Second in AFC South, Third in Conference)
This group is solid, but unspectacular. What puts them over the top is Peyton Manning’s ability to run the offense and distribute the ball quickly. Manning definitely makes these guys better.

LT Tony Ugoh
LG Ryan Lilja
C Jeff Saturday
RG Charile Johnson
RT Ryan Diem

Tennessee Titans (Third in AFC South, 12th in Conference)
This unit is not that exciting, especially since 37-year old Kevin Mawae is holding down the fort at center. Overall, it’s hard to evaluate this unit with the unpredictability of Vince Young, in and out of the pocket.

LT Michael Roos
LG Eugene Amano
C Kevin Mawae
RG Jake Scott
RT David Stewart

Houston Texans (Fourth in AFC South, 13th in Conference)
This franchise is still trying to hit its stride, as is the offensive line. Former Hurricane Eric Winston has shown potential at tackle.

LT Duane Brown (26th overall pick)
LG Chester Pitts
C Chris Myers
RG Fred Weary
RT Eric Winston

This is the first post in a series in which we will go division by division, looking at and ranking the most overlooked factor in the success of your fantasy football squad, the offensive line.
