Auburn Football: Do You Still Believe

February 27, 1993 I was born. On that day I was welcomed into the Auburn family. For fifteen years my life has circled around Auburn. I'v never lost faith for what I believe in, I'v never giving up hope.

I believe in Auburn and love it; those are strong words. I believe in Auburn and love it, no I love Auburn but do I believe. I don't know I just don't know.

We all know how the season has gone. How a lot of us sat in Jordan-Hare after LSU beat us, after some of us sat and watched Vandy beat us, and then Arkansas.

You know we say I believe in a sound mind, sound body, and a spirit that's not afraid. Where are the minds of our coach, where are the minds of our players, where are the minds of the fans. I know where my mind is, and it's not in Auburn.

I believed in Auburn so much last night as we played West Virgina. I believed that there would be a turn around for our football program. But watching West Virgina fight on and Auburn giving up I couldn't take it any more. I turned my t.v. off.

All night I asked myself do I believe, do I still believe in Auburn. That's a hard question to answer right know.

Before I finish I leave you with these words that we hear every Saturday:

Auburn Football: The Traditions we Cherish

College football is all about tradition, but here at Auburn we live our traditions. Through our daily lives, at work, and on vacation we live our traditions.

I was on vacation last year with my family to New York. While at the airport a man walked up to us in his Auburn attire and said “War Eagle.” When we got on the plane, a guy asked us what did that mean, and we all said it’s an Auburn tradition. I say this to tell you that no matter where we are or where we go we are all Auburn.

Here are some words written by a former Auburn professor George Petrie. These words are a part of the Auburn creed which all Auburn students, fans, and alumni hold with the highest respect. This is a small portion of the Auburn creed.

“I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.”

“I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.”

“I believe in a sound mind, a sound body, and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities.”

“And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it.”

And to the people of this world that believe in these things that the Auburn family cherish maybe you will believe and love your school tradition. War Eagle!

Here are some of the traditions will behold at Auburn.

Aubie

Aubie the tiger is the award-winning mascot of the Auburn Tigers. Aubie has won six mascot national championships, more than any other mascot in the United States, and was one of the first college mascots inducted to the Mascot Hall of Fame.

Aubie first appeared to Auburn fans as a cartoon character on the Auburn/Hardin-Simmons football program cover in 1959. The cartoon tiger continued to adorn Auburn program covers for 18 years. While on the cover of the Auburn program she posted a home record of 63-16-2.

Aubie was first seen by Tiger fans as a mascot in 1979. Aubie appeared at the SEC basketball tournament against Vandy when the Tigers upset the Commodores to advance to the next round.

The following day, Auburn faced Georgia in the longest game in SEC tournament history, ending in four OT’s. Auburn finished ninth instead of last in the tournament, thanks to Aubie.

With so much success on the football cover and on the hard court, it was time to take Aubie to the plains of Jordan-Hare Stadium. Aubie debuted in the 1979 season opener against Kansas State.

Shortly before kickoff, a giant gift box came out to the 50-yard line. Aubie came exploding out of the box, and a new Auburn tradition was born. Auburn won the game 26-18. Aubie is still on the sidelines at very Auburn home and away football and basketball game. “Aubie the Tiger” is an Auburn tradition.

Tiger Walk

The most copied tradition in college football is the Tiger Walk. When Eye of the Tiger is blasted over the PA system, everybody knows it’s time for the tiger walk.

Two hours before the kickoff of each Auburn home football game, thousands of Auburn fans line Donahue Drive to cheer on the Tigers as they walk from Sewell Hall to Jordan-Hare Stadium. They also do the Tiger Walk at away games.

The Tiger Walk started was 1960 when a group of kids walk up the street to greet the team as they got ready to walk to the stadium. During the tenure former Auburn head coach Doug Barfield urged the fans to come out and support the team, and they did.

Today the team, led by the coaches, walks down the hill and into the stadium surrounded by thousands of fans who pat them on the back and shake their hands as they walk to the jungle to take down their prey.

The Tiger Walk as become beloved to all Tiger fans. The largest Tiger Walk occurred on Dec. 2, 1989, before the first-ever home football game against Alabama. On that day, an estimated 20,000 fans packed the one block section of road leading to the stadium. “The Tiger Walk” an Auburn tradition.

Toomer’s Corner

At the intersection of Magnolia and College streets marks the heart of the city, Toomer's Corner. It is named after Toomer's Drugs, a small store on the corner that has been an Auburn landmark for over 100 years.

This is no ordinary corner. Hanging over the corner are two massive old-growth oak trees. And whenever there is cause for celebration in the Auburn community, these trees are flooded with toilet paper.

This tradition is said to have begun when Toomer's Drugs Store had the only telegraph in the city. So during away football games employees drug store would let the city know if Auburn won by rolling the oak trees with toilet paper to signal a win to the public.

This tradition was only used as a way to celebrate football victories, but now it has become a way to celebrate anything good that happens to Auburn. There’s no feeling like when you are leaving Jordan Hare making your way to Toomer’s Corner to celebrate an Auburn victory. “Rolling Toomer’s Corner” an Auburn Tradition.

War Eagle

"War Eagle" is the battle cry and symbol of Auburn University. War Eagle is the way the Auburn family express themselves when in need the need of something special. There’s nothing like War Eagle, not Boomer Sooner or Howard’s rock.

War Eagle is a unique tradition that has gotten Auburn out of the toughest situations. Auburn men and women believe in it, and love it.

There are several folk tales about the battle cry, and each is quite interesting but the most popular myth was originally published in 1960.

Auburn Plainsman Jim Phillips told the story of the first time Auburn met Georgia on the football field in 1902 and centered the story on a fictional spectator who was a veteran of the Civil War.

The story goes like this. The first time Auburn and Georgia met in a football game there was a confederate solider in the stands. With him that day was a golden eagle the old soldier had found on the battlefield during the war.

According to the story, the eagle suddenly broke free and began circling the playing field. As the eagle soared around the field Auburn fans screamed out “War Eagle” “War Eagle.”

Auburn began a steady march toward the Georgia end zone for a thrilling victory. At the end of the game the eagle took a sudden dive, and crashed into the ground, and died. But the battle cry didn’t end there; War Eagle lived on to become a symbol of the proud and Auburn spirit.

Another version is that two students shouting at each other at a pep rally said something that was misinterpreted to be "War Eagle" thus the birth of the battle cry. But most likely none of these stories is factual. And the concept of the War Eagle was borrowed from the 8th Wisconsin regiment.

War Eagle lives on and that’s all what matters. Their have been several eagles to serve as War Eagle in remembrance of them here are War Eagle I-VI.

Auburn Football: 2008 Game-By-Game Preview and Prediction.

The 2008 college football season is coming fast and teams are getting settled in. Teams are looking for a chance to play in the national championship. There is one team who has a chance to make it to the promise lands, and that team is the Auburn Tigers.

Auburn comes into the 2008 with two new coordinators Paul Rhoads from Pitt and Tony Franklin from Troy.

The Tigers also come in with a quarterback situation. Chris Todd a junior college transfer who is currently injured. Kodi Burns the savior of the plains appeared on the plains when the Tigers played Mississippi State. Burns scored two touchdowns in the game but, the Tigers still fell to the bulldogs. Kodi played on and off as Brandon Cox back-up, and in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, Burns scored the game winning touchdown to bet Clemson 23-20.

The Tigers’ biggest losses came on the defensive side of the ball with the loss of four starters Quentin Groves, Patrick Lee, Pat Sims, and King Dunlap. On the offensive side the biggest loss was tight end Cole Bennett.

Key players returning to the Tigers on offence that should help led them to Miami are running backs Brad Lester, Ben Tate, and Mario Fannin, quarterbacks Chris Todd and Kodi Burns, receiver Rodgerigus Smith, and kicker Wes Byrum. On the defensive side, returning players are Jerraud Powers, Tray Blackmon, and Sen’Derick Marks.

These guys, along with the rest of the Tigers football team, should make a run for the national championship.

The Tigers have a difficult schedule, but should have it easy with most of the tougher games being at home. Here is preview of the Tigers' upcoming season:

UL-Monroe @ Auburn

The season opener for the Tigers should be a breeze. UL Monroe comes in off a 6-6 season and losing their three year starter at quarterback Kinsmon Lancaster.

In this game, Auburn will get to see how their new coordinators work. They will also get to get a preview on who might be leading the Tigers at the quarterback position.

The only thing Auburn and Ul Monroe has in common is that they both beat Alabama last season. Auburn has fun in this game against the warhawks Auburn wins big.

49-7 Auburn

Southern Miss @ Auburn

Southern Miss ended their '07 season with a loss to Cincinnati in the PapaJohns.com Bowl. Southern Miss finished their season 7-6 and loss their head coach. The Eagles should come into this game 1-0, if they win their season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.

With the Tigers coming off a big win against UL Monroe, the showdown should roll over to the Southern Miss game.

42-14 Auburn

Auburn @ Mississippi St.

State had an amazing season last year, finishing their '07 season 8-5, and giving Sylvester Croom his first bowl victory against UCF in the Auto Zone Liberty Bowl. State should come into this game 2-0 and ready to push for a SEC West division title.

Auburn will be ready for State after last year's game, when State beat Auburn 19-14 in a shocker. But this time, Auburn should have their QB problem solved.

The Tigers can’t wait to show State that last year's win was a fluke but it won’t be easy to beat State. Croom will have his boys ready, and so will Tuberville. The Tigers will find a way to beat State.

28-17 Auburn

LSU @ Auburn

The defending national champions LSU went all the way, beating Ohio St. 38-24 to win the national championship.

LSU loses a lot of key players from their '07 season such as Outland Trophy winner Glenn Dorsey, Jacob Hester, Craig Steltz, Matt Flynn , Early Doucet, and many more. LSU should come into the game 3-0.

Auburn will come into to this game ready to fight their way to a victory. The Tigers are going to have to be ready because LSU will. The defense and offence should be clicking for the Tigers as they come into a tough game.

I can’t wait until the Tigers take the field to face the defending National Champions. When the final whistle blows, 87,000 plus will be storming Toomer’s Corner.

31-28 Auburn

Tennessee @ Auburn

Tennessee's 2007 season was kind of a surprise to me. I didn’t think that the Vols would make it to the SEC championship game. Tennessee won the big games win they needed to, but didn’t beat LSU in the championship game. Tennessee made it to the Outback Bowl and beat Wisconsin 21-17. The Vols should come into the game 2-1, with their lone loss against Florida.

This game will be another tough game for the Tigers, but they should catch Tennessee hurt after a tough game against the Gators. The Tigers love being in tough situations and will find a way to win. Tuberville and the coordinators will have the Tigers ready for the Vols.

It’s only every five years that the Vols make a trip to Auburn—and I tell you, we will be ready. So when brunt orange and light orange meet in Auburn, it will be one game you don’t won’t to miss.

28-24 Auburn

Auburn @ Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt's 2007 season was not too bad. The Commodores finished 5-7 and had a big win against South Carolina. Vandy has been somewhat of an embarrassment to the SEC when taking about football. Vandy will get their chance to go to Atlanta but not this year. Vandy should come in this game 2-2 with there losses against South Caroline and Ole Miss.

Auburn can relax in this game after coming off two big games.

As much as I wish that this would be an exciting game, it just won’t be. There might be more orange in the stands than gold and black. The Tigers roar in this game.

49-7 Auburn

Arkansas @ Auburn

Arkansas ended their '07 season with a disappointing loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. Arkansas loses their dynamic duo Darren McFadden and Felix Jones to the NFL, as well as head coach Houston Nutt. The Hogs hired a new head coach in Bobby Petrino—an offensive mastermind. I wonder how long Petrino will be at Arkansas.

The Hogs should come in this game 2-3 losing to Texas, Alabama, and Florida.

Auburn and the fans will be waiting for Petrino and the Hogs to wonder into Jordan-Hare Stadium. With Petrino being the former offensive coordinators for the Tigers the Hogs will be ready, but the Tigers are too much.

This has been fun to watch over the years, but this year everything changes. Arkansas loses its fourth game of the season.

35-10 Auburn

Auburn @ West Virginia

West Virginia's 2007 season was another success, with an 11-2 record and a Fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma. The Mountaineers lose Steve Slaton, but replace him with Noel Devine. The biggest returning player for the Mountaineers is Pat White, who might cause a problem for the Tigers defense. West Virginia should come into the game undefeated.

The Tigers should also come into the game undefeated. The Tiger offense will have a chance to show the mountaineers that they can also run the spread.

Kodi Burns and Pat White are going to shine in this primetime game that might end the hopes of both teams to play in the National Championship game. It’s going to be a showdown in Morgantown.

The world will see—can West Virginia's new head coach win the big games? I think Wes will step up and win the Tigers the game.

20-17 Auburn

Auburn @ Ole Miss

Ole Miss' '07 season was very disappointing for Rebels fans, but who cares. Ole Miss loss every conference game and finished the season 3-9. Ole Miss fired their head coach at the end of the season and hired Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt.

Ole Miss loses star running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis to the NFL and is being in a solid recruiting class. The Rebels should come into this game 4-4 losing against Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, and Arkansas. Watch for Jason Jones—an underground recruit who will make some noise this season.

Auburn comes into Oxford after a tough game in West Virginia, but will run over the Rebels. The Tigers will enjoy embarrassing Ole Miss in Oxford.

All I got to say is—when you don’t like Tuberville, he has security by the name of the Auburn Tigers to handle all his problems.

42-10 Auburn

Homecoming

The Tigers homecoming game is against Tennessee-Martin. This game is for the fans and for second stringers to get some experience.

35-3 Auburn

Georgia @ Auburn

The Dogs ended their '07 season with a Sugar Bowl victory against Hawaii. Georgia surprised a lot of people last season, pushing toward a national championship and producing two future Heisman candidates in Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno.

Georgia is looking to be a national championship contender in the upcoming season. Georgia should come into the game 9-1 with their lone loss coming against LSU or Florida.

This game will be the toughest challenge for Auburn this season. The coaching staff is really going to have to work if they won’t to beat the dogs. It’s going to take the players, coaches, and fans to push Auburn to a victory.

The last couple of seasons, Georgia has had Auburn's number. And I don’t think it will change this season. Tommy Tuberville will have to work to win this game. It depends on who wants it.

24-21 Georgia

Auburn @ Alabama

The Tide had a season not too satisfying for their loyal fans. Alabama finished 7-6 with an Independence Bowl victory against Colorado. With Nick Saban's killer recruiting class, the Tide might start to roll coming this fall. Alabama should come in to this game 9-2 losing against Georgia and LSU.

Auburn will come off a bye week and be ready to face the Tide in the Iron Bowl.

Nick and the Crimson Tide will be ready to bring back the glory to Alabama football. But they've got another thing coming. Watch out Crimson Tide, the Tigers are coming into town.

21-17 Auburn

If every thing plays out how I hope it will, Auburn will go to the SEC championship game and still have a chance to play in the national championship game. War Eagle!!!

College Football: Must-See Game No. 10 is Illinois vs. Missouri

With less than 100 days before the start of the college football season, stadiums are selling out, hotels are being booked, and soon it will be time to see the biggest of 2008. Over the next 10 weeks, I will be ranking the Top 10 must-see games of this college football season.

This is the No. 10 game of this college football season.

The Arch Rivalry is the college football game between Illinois and Missouri. This game is not played annually, but it is scheduled as the opening game for each team through the 2010 season.

In this series, Missouri leads 14-7. The game will be played on Aug. 30 in St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome. The last time these two teams met, Missouri won 40-34.

Missouri

Missouri ended its 2007 season with a big win over Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. Missouri had a great season with a record of 11-2, producing a Heisman Trophy runner-up in Chase Daniel. The Tigers' two losses came against Oklahoma, but they had big wins against Kansas, Texas Tech, and Illinois. With Chase Daniel coming back for his senior year, Missouri looks good for the 2008 season.

Missouri will be a team to watch this year. Stepping out of the shadow of Oklahoma and Texas, Missouri has a chance to go back to the Big XII Championship game.

Missouri will have to play Texas, Kansas, and up-and-coming Nebraska in its 2008 season.

The Tigers have a lot of talent coming back and should make a run for a BCS Championship.

Illinois

Illinois ended its 2007 season with a hard loss in the Rose Bowl to USC. It was amazing that they even went to the Rose Bowl. The Illini in the past couple of season had really bad seasons, finishing last in the Big Ten.

But it all changed in 2007. The Illini started its season with a loss to Missouri but bounced back quickly. Illinois won big games against Penn State, Wisconsin, and the No. 1-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The Illini ended its season with a record of 9-4.

Illinois lost its starting RB Rashard Mendenhall, and it's going to be hard for the Illini to replace him, but Juice Williams and Arrellious Benn are coming back.

I don’t really know if Illinois will have a chance to go back to a BCS bowl game, but it will be an exciting team to watch this season.

This game will be very exciting to watch. Last year's game really took this rivalry to a different level.

The Tigers looked good coming off their big win over Arkansas. They come in with a high power offense featuring Chase Daniel, Jeremy Maclin, Tommy Saunders, and Danario Alexander. And a hard nosed defensive line in Tommy Chavis, Ziggy Hood, and Stryker Sulak.

This game is going to be a challenge for both teams, but I think Missouri is just too much for Illinois to handle. Missouri wins big in their season opener.

Prediction: 42-14 Missouri

College Football: 2008's Must-See College Football Games

With less than 100 days before the start of the 2008 college football season, stadiums are selling out and hotels are being booked as fans prepare for the biggest games of the year.

A new season is in hand and there’s no room for any mistakes. Big games abound throughout the country—two teams ready for battle, both reaching for the chance to win a National Championship.

Over the next ten weeks I will be ranking the top ten must-see games of this college football season. I will also be giving my predictions on who will win. There are teams from every major conference.

Here are the must-see games of this college football season.

LSU vs. UGA

In this series LSU leads 14-11 with one tie. This game will be played on October 25 in Baton Rouge at Tiger Stadium. The last time these two teams met UGA won 34-14.

USC vs. Ohio St.

In this series USC leads 11-9 with one tie. This game will be played on September 13 in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The last time these two cross-country teams met, USC won 35-26. The only way Ohio St. got in this article is because they are playing USC.

West Virginia vs. Auburn

This is the first time that these two teams will ever face off. This game will be played on October 23 in Morgantown at Milan Puskar Stadium. This game will be aired on ESPN as a Thursday night primetime game.

Oklahoma vs. Texas

The Red River Shootout—in this series Texas leads 57-40 with five ties. This game will be played on October 11 in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl. The last time these two foes met, Oklahoma won 28-21.

Clemson vs. Alabama

In this series Alabama leads 11-3. This game will be played on August 30 in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome. The last time these two teams met, Alabama won 56-0.

Nebraska vs. Virginia Tech

In this series Nebraska leads 1-0. This game will be played on September 27 in Lincoln at Memorial Stadium. The last time these two teams met, Nebraska won 41-21.

Auburn vs. Tennessee

In this series Auburn leads 25-21 with three ties. This game will be played on September 27 in Auburn at Jordan Hare Stadium. The last two times these teams met was in 2004—once in the regular season which Auburn won 34-10, and in the SEC championship game which Auburn also won 38-28.

Missouri vs. Illinois

In this series Missouri leads 14-7. This game will be played on August 30 in St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome. The last time these two teams met, Missouri won 40-34.

Florida vs. Georgia

The World’s Largest Cocktail Party—in this series Georgia leads 46-37 with two ties. This game will be played on November 1 in Jacksonville at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. The last time these two foes met, Georgia won 42-30.

Oklahoma vs. Kansas

In this series Oklahoma leads 66-27 with six ties. This game will be played on October 18 in Norman, Oklahoma at the Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium. The last time these two teams met, Oklahoma won 19-3.
