Sunshine and Golden Hurricanes: C-USA Preseason Power Rankings

In a season that saw the Tigers win their fourth straight C-USA regular season and conference championships, another 30-win season, and a deep run in the postseason, you would have to think the Tigers would be penciled in for another run at their fifth championship in a row.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the Forum.

John Calipari leaves Memphis for Kentucky, making people like my friends Jeffrey Howard and Blake Allen happy, the top-class recruits who were supposed to come to Memphis head to Lexington, and well, you know the rest.

After searching aimlessly for a "wow" hire, R.C. Johnson decides on a guy eight years older than me as head coach named Josh Pastner, who has never coached before at the collegiate level but has prepared for this moment his entire life.

With the decimation of the Tigers' roster, teams that got blown out by the Tigers on a constant basis to finally have a chance to get their licks in.

But not so fast, my friend.

And here are the preseason rankings:

1. Tulsa (25-11) Doug Wojcik has done a remarkable job in turning the Golden Hurricane around in his four years at Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane won 25 games last season and reached the NIT. Returning to the Golden Hurricane this year is preseason player of the year Jeremy Jordan, who averaged 13.8 points in 2008-09. Also an incentive for the Golden Hurricane this season is the fact they will host the 2010 Conference USA Tournament.

Doc's Prediction: One and Done

2. Memphis (33-4) Regardless of what one would say, the Tigers are still going to be a threat in the conference. The Tigers return a slimmer Pierre Henderson-Niles, who is going to be a force in the post, as well as sharp-shooters Doneal Mack and Roburt Sallie. Expect big contributions from Will Coleman and former Duke standout Elliot Williams, who will add depth to the backcourt.

Doc's Prediction: One and Done

3. UTEP (23-14) The Miners are trying to crash the party in Conference USA, and with the changes by the Tigers this might be their best chance to do that. Led by Randy Culpepper, who averaged 17.5 points last season, the Miners are going to be looking for a better postseason tournament to play in. With the addition of Arnett Moultrie, who made the Under-19 team last summer, the good times will roll once again in El Paso.

Doc's Prediction: NIT

4. UAB (22-12) UAB has always been in the top half of the conference, yet for all that they manage to make the NIT almost every year. The Blazers return Aaron Johnson and Howard Crawford—the team's leading returning scorer—and welcome newcomer Dexter Fields and Heath Gameren from Australia.

Doc's Prediction: NIT

5. Central Florida (17-14) A near-upset of Memphis, coupled with another winning season in Orlando, gives Knights fans reason to have hope. Even better, His Airness' son is playing for the Knights, and it would be interesting to see which shoes he wants to sport.

Doc's Prediction: No postseason.

6. Houston (21-12) The Cougars have done reasonably well in recent years under Tom Penders, earning a trip to the CBI in 2009, their second straight trip to that tournament. Returning to the Cougars is leading scorer Aubrey Coleman, who averaged 19.4 points in 2008-09, and Kelvin Lewis, who averaged 18 points for the Cougars.

Doc's Prediction: No postseason

7. Tulane (14-17) Dave Dickerson has won more games than any Tulane coach in his first first five years, going 60-62 so far. But he is coming off a losing season, the first for the Green Wave in three years. Returning to New Orleans this season is Kevin Sims, who was one of three players in the conference to lead the team in scoring and assists, and Trent Rogers, who is a good point guard for the Green Wave.

Doc's Prediction: No postseason

8. Southern Miss (15-17) It has been 18 years since the Golden Eagles captured the hearts of fans in basketball. Don't expect anything else from the Golden Eagles despite standouts like R.L. Horton and Andre Stephens, who will contribute to the team in 2009-10.

Doc's Prediction: No postseason

9. Rice (10-22) The Owls return Connor Frizzille and Lucas Kuipers to Houston, after having solid starts to their careers for the Owls. The recruiting class that comes to Houston for the 2009-10 season was ranked as one of the best among mid-majors, but it's going to take some time for the Owls to get their wings.

Doc's Prediction: No postseason

10. Marshall (15-17) Marshall could surprise some people in the conference. Don't let the prediction fool you.

Doc's Prediction: No postseason

11. SMU (9-21) The Mustangs look ready to climb out of the basement in the conference. Good thing about this is the players this year were recruited by Matt Doherty, so it's time to see what can transpire in Dallas.

Doc's Prediction: No postseason

12. East Carolina (13-17) Strange thing I learned from Tuesday's football game between the Tigers and East Carolina is that Memphis football suckage is equivalent to East Carolina basketball. Same thing is going to happen in 2009-10 for the Pirates.

And there you have it, the C-USA Power Rankings. Let the debating begin.

The Tobacco Is Going To Be Sweeter: Preseason ACC Basketball Power Rankings

In a year which North Carolina won their second national title in five years, as well as Duke returning to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2006, the ACC this year is going to be once again buzzing with exciting players, outstanding freshman, and of course great coaches.

In 2008-09, the ACC sent Florida State, Boston College, Maryland, Wake Forest, Clemson, North Carolina, and Duke to the Big Dance while Miami and Virginia Tech were represented in the NIT.

Virginia sent former coach Dave Leiato packing after four seasons and brought in Tony Bennett from Washington State, where he took the Cougars to the Sweet 16 in 2008.

So without further ado, here’s the ACC Preseason Power Rankings:

1. North Carolina (34-4 in 2008-09) The Tar Heels, coming off their national championship run last season as well as the Heels’ third straight regular season ACC title.

And much like after their 2005 title, the Tar Heels will have a different look, returning only one starter in Deon Thompson, who averaged 10.6 points per game and 5 rebounds. At the point will be Larry Drew, who will have the keys to the offense with the departure of Ty Lawson, Joining him in the backcourt more than likely will be either Dexter Strickland or Marcus Ginyard.

Doc’s Prediction: Final Four

2. Duke (30-7) After reaching the round of 16 for the first time since 2006, the Blue Devils look to build on that with the return of All-American Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer. Singler last season averaged 16.5 points per game while Scheyer averaged 14 a game for the Blue Devils. Scheyer looks to develop into a playmaker in Durham while Singler is expected to improve on his NBA prospectus.

Doc’s Prediction: Elite Eight

3. Georgia Tech (12-19) Derrick Favors, one of the top recruits in the country, may have saved Paul Hewitt’s job when he signed with the Ramblin’ Wreck. The 6-10 Atlanta native brings size and depth to an already strong frontcourt led by Ganai Lawal, who pulled his name out of NBA Draft consideration. Expect this team to be in the upper tier in the ACC and dancing in March.

Doc’s Prediction: Two and Out.

4. Clemson (23-9) Since 2006-07, the Tigers have won 25, 24, and 23 games and improved on their winning percentage every year since Purnell has been head coach.

This year, with the Tigers saying so long to K.C. Rivers, who averaged 14 points for the Tigers, they will rely on senior Trevor Booker, who is a beast down in the post and the playmaking skills of Demontez Still, who averaged three assists a game. Another banner year is in store for the Tigers as well as another 20-win season.

Doc’s Prediction: Two and Out

5. Maryland (21-14) After a rocky schedule in the ACC in 2009, the Terps managed somehow to make the NCAA Tournament where they would lose to Memphis in the second round.

Somehow the Terps’ success lies on the shoulders of Grevais Vasquez, who averaged 17.5 points for Maryland and returned to College Park for his senior year after testing the draft waters. He will be joined by big man Jordan Williams, who is a find for Williams, after being ranked 85th in the country by Rivals.com.

Doc’s Prediction: One and Done

6. Florida State (25-10) The Seminoles returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998, losing in the first round to Wisconsin. Gone is Toney Douglass, who went on to the NBA and in comes in Michael Snaer, who is one-half of the McDonald’s All-Americans that signed with the Seminoles. Joining Snaer will be Chris Singleton, who has an ability to stretch defenses.

Doc’s Prediction: One and Done

7. Boston College (22-12) Another 20-win season, another NCAA Tournament, Skinner’s skill in getting diamonds in the rough has paid off in his 12 years in Chestnutt Hill.

Doc’s Prediction: NIT

8. Wake Forest (24-7) There’s a difference in losing to Memphis in the NCAA Tournament and losing to Cleveland State. One difference is the Memphis basketball program has tradition. Cleveland State does not.

After the Vikings defeated the Deacons, it was back to the drawing board for Wake, as they lost Jeff Teague and James Johnson to the NBA Draft. The good news from this is that they return L.D. Williams and Al-Farouq Aminu to Winston-Salem. But not to the NCAA this year.

Doc’s Prediction: NIT

9. Miami (19-13) Miami has made strides since joining the ACC, however at best the Canes have been in the middle of the pack. With the loss of Jack McClinton, the Canes will look to Dwayne Collins and Cyrus McGowan for leadership and production.

Doc’s Prediction: No postseason.

10. Virginia Tech (19-15) In the last three seasons, the Hokies have gone to an NCAA Tournament and a pair of NIT’s under Seth Greenberg. But that was done with players like A.D. Vassallo and Deron Washington.

Now after another trip to the NIT, the Hokies are going to have to try and scrape up another postseason berth without Vassallo. However, the Hokies will still have guard Jeff Allen to bail them out in games as well as Malcolm Delaney, who is halfway to 2,000 points in his career.

Doc’s Prediction: No Postseason

11. North Carolina State (16-14) Sidney Lowe has been lying in the weeds as coach at North Carolina State. His first team made the NIT, but it’s been followed by a 15-16 record and a 16-14 ledger in 2008-09.

The Pack could have gotten Raleigh native John Wall, but he ends up going to Kentucky, so it’s sharp-shooting Javier Gonzalez and Lorenzo Brown, who was one of the top point guards in the country in the class of 2009. Expect the Pack to take some lumps in 2009-10.

Doc’s Prediction: No postseason

12. Virginia (10-18) Tony Bennett trades in the Pacific Northwest for Charlottesville, where the Cavaliers finished 10-18 last season, which resulted in the firing of Dave Leiato. Bennett is no stranger to reclamation projects, something that he did at Washington State, where he led the Cougars to the Sweet 16 in 2008.

He has a pretty good squad to inherit, with Sylven Landesberg, who is capable of scoring 2,000 points. Last season, the sophomore was fourth nationally among freshman scorers, averaging 16.6 points a game for the Cavaliers.

He’s expected to post some more big numbers, but it won’t be enough for the Wahoos.

D0c’s Prediction: No postseason

Ole Miss Is Overrated U

Since the SEC championship game started in 1992, five teams have made the trip to Atlanta to represent the West.

Of those five teams, Ole Miss isn't one of them, and not anytime soon, don't expect the Rebels to make the trip to Atlanta as a representative of the SEC West.

Sure, the Rebels had a season to remember in 2008, but one would have to be a betting man that the Rebels would repeat their success in 2009.

Which they have, against sorry teams like Southeastern Louisiana, Memphis, and Vanderbilt.

Not Alabama or South Carolina.

Jevan Snead in the big games so far for the Rebels, has gone missing in action, playing more like a scared little boy than a guy that was supposed to be one of the best in the SEC at the quarterback position in 2009.

Against Alabama, Snead threw for four interceptions, was sacked, and in the first half, the Rebels had a grand total of 19 yards total offense.

Not good numbers if you want to be among the best in the SEC.

The defense, which was the mainstay last season, couldn't stop the Tide's running game, nor even tried to.

It was just not in the plan for the Rebels to somehow magically jump from Cotton Bowl champions to potential national champions.

Just wasn't.

I'm sure Rebel fans can agree that all of what they wanted to do in 2009 was nothing more than a pipe dream.

Now that I mention it, it was more like a crack high.

The only saving grace for the Rebels now is just finishing above water in the SEC West, which seems to be a tall task because Auburn and LSU are next on the docket as well as a pesky Arkansas squad that beat Auburn Saturday.

Win two of those games, and you could see them in Memphis once again facing Houston.

Or Shreveport.

But not New Orleans.

Murderers' Row, Meet Team Murk

Over 80 years ago, the most famous baseball team ever assembled was slugging their way into the history books, and roughshod through the American League, en route to the 1927 World Series title.

The 1927 Yankees had players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Joe Dugan, and Earle Combs.

Eighty-two years later on the softball fields of Tobey Park in Midtown Memphis, the lineup my softball team faced yesterday in our first game of the intramural season, Murderers’ Row made a return.

No, Ruth did not come from the grave to kill us in slow-pitch softball.

But the team we were facing had a name that would have been close to Murderers’ Row.

Team Murk, which was composed of CBU basketball players Scott Dennis, Jimmy Palmer, Connor Wetzel, Daniel Wulker, and Syd Warner.

“They killed us last year,” one of my teammates said to me prior to the game while we sat and watched the team warm up along the third base side, “Look at them warming up while we’re sitting in the stands trying to figure out who’s playing where.”

Well, from what I learned in Little League baseball, and later on junior high ball, was that you needed gloves to warm up prior to the game, something yours truly didn’t have as well as his teammates.

While Wulker was trying to get warmed up for pitching, I asked him to pitch me a couple.

First pitch dropped into center field, while the second one was a hard smash to left field.

“Alright,” second base umpire Dylan Heim said, “Hancock and Mike will see who will go first.”

“Let them go first,” Mike said to Dylan, “We’re already out here on the field.”

“You’re leading off,” one of my teammates said to me, realizing that I never was a leadoff man, just a guy who batted always in the middle of the order.

And so I went, facing Wulker, which wasn’t like facing Jerrenda Wheeler in the courtyard at Madison East, when Wheeler threw his curveballs, and I tried desperately to hit with a whiffle ball bat.

While that at-bat was not much to write about, as well as the rest of our half of the inning, I myself had to deal with something greater than that, using a left-handed glove for the first time in a game.

As the game went on, I tried desperately to get some hits, figuring the best way to do it is by hitting a line drive up the middle.

Oops.

In my second at-bat against Wulker, I hit a line drive up the middle that nearly clipped Heim into centerfield, realizing that I achieved something that I could never do against Wheeler last year.

That is, until I found out that I couldn’t hit one through the circle where the pitcher was.

“It’s for safety purposes,” intramurals commissioner Brittney Plowman told me, which saved Wulker from joining Brandon Solomon, and my mother, as people who were nearly injured by line drives off my bat.

“I make plays,” Wulker shouted from the circle.

My last time up against Team Murk, was against a new pitcher in Connor Wetzel, which I thought was going to be easy because he walked the bases loaded, and we got our only run from an unlikely source.

And again it went through the circle.

“It’s hard to get the timing,” my friend Bradley Greer said to me.

Whatever it was, it didn’t help as Team Murk beat us 9-1, including a play that probably sidelined me for the rest of the week, when my pitcher and I collided when I was trying to make a catch at shortstop, messing my knee up which still hurts as I type this column.

Oh well.

But it was better than having a girl clip you with a stray pitch, which happened when I was doing the announcing at Crichton for their softball team a couple of years ago.

Georgia's On Our Mind: UGA-LSU and Other Week Five College Football Picks

With all that happened last weekend, including my own personal meltdown after seeing the crapfest the University of Memphis' football program hosted against Marshall, I am a medicore 9-8 in my picks column. I went 4-4 last weekend, the big winners being Notre Dame, LSU, Alabama, and Va. Tech.

So here we go:

Michigan State vs. Michigan

Remember before the college football season everyone was abuzz about the amount of time Rich Rod's boys were putting in for football?

After reaching No. 22 in the AP poll, all that hard work seemed to pay off. Meanwhile down in East Lansing, another year of false hope is slowly coming to be reality.

Doc's Pick: Michigan

Central Florida vs. Memphis

The opening line for this week's game with the Golden Knights-Tigers game was favoring the Golden Knights by 17 points.

And with good reason—that reason being our lame excuse of a head coach.

Doc's Pick: Central Florida

LSU at Georgia

In the marquee game in the SEC this weekend, the Bayou Bengals head to Sanford Stadium to face Joe Cox and Co. This decade, the two programs have both won SEC championships, while LSU has two national championships to gloat about in this decade.

The Bayou Bengals had to rely on the grace of God to defeat Mississippi State on the road last weekend while the Bulldogs defeated Arizona State, 20-17. But the atmosphere in between the hedges is going to be quite interesting.

Doc's Pick: Georgia

Oklahoma at Miami

With Sam Bradford out against the Hurricanes, it's hard to know whether or not the Sooners will respond to the arm of Landry Jones. Jones filled in for Bradford when the Sooners lost to BYU. However, the Hurricanes are looking to bounce back after losing in a monsoon to Va. Tech.

Doc's Pick: Oklahoma

Ole Miss vs. Vanderbilt

The Rebels were plagued by the SI cover jinx against South Carolina and now they're facing a Commodores squad that has beaten the Rebels four straight times. Ouch.

Doc's Pick: Ole Miss

Washington vs. Notre Dame

Ironic that the two schools that fired Ty Willingham are facing each other after he long stepped away from the scene at both schools. Other than that, this should be a chance to let the nation guess whether or not if Washington is for real.

Doc's Pick: Notre Dame

Alabama vs. Kentucky

My friend Jeffrey Howard, an unabashed Kentucky fan, and I had lunch on Thursday afternoon, and on his status Saturday, he was wondering when basketball season started.

Apparently, with the fans camping out for Big Blue Madness, I guess it's started.

Doc's Pick: Alabama

Auburn vs. Tennessee

Last year, my friend Bradley Greer and I had a running bet that Auburn would beat Tennessee, which occured at Jordan-Hare Stadium. This year it's going to be different since Gus Malzhan's offensive wizardry is lighting up scoreboards so far and Kiffin's trying to figure out what to do with Crompton.

Doc's Pick: Auburn.

My time's up. You've been a great audience. I'm 9-8 on the season so far, hope to do better this week instead of worse. If you're a student or faculty member at CBU, listen to "Overrated" with Jeremiah Mooney and TJ Buckley on Wednesday as well as my show, "The Doc Hancock Show" weekdays beginning Monday at 3 p.m. on Pirate Radio.

I Preach, I Cuss, I Don't Care Anymore: Memphis' Tommy West Sings the Boos

My mother, a University of Memphis employee since the Chuck Stobart days, always had this saying when she used to lecture me.

“I preach, I cuss, I hit,” she would say to me.

While most of it knocked some sense into yours truly, the same thing didn’t register hasn’t registered for the University of Memphis and their football program nor their pitiful excuse of a coach.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Tommy West as a person. I really do.

But never in my life have I seen a coach who, just in so many words, didn’t want to be there with his team, teaching them, encouraging them, doing the things that a coach is supposed to do.

I was always taught by my baseball coach at Fairview a decade ago that there are two types of losing.

Losing and trying your best, giving it all you got for the team until the final whistle, showing that you may be down, but your heart is stronger than ever.

The opposite of that is losing and not giving a damn, something that would apply to Tommy West and the coaching staff.

A week after you practically try to throw Tyler Bass under the bus, after he shows you with a still-screwed up knee that he can start at QB and play well, something he did against UT-Martin, you put the kid in terrible positions.

Show me a QB that is constantly throwing screens when it’s 3rd and long, or worse throwing it to the sidelines, something I only did when the situation warranted.

Then the defense, the only part of the team I haven’t ripped yet in my column, acted like they couldn’t figure out Marshall’s star running back, Darius Marshall who had 3 touchdowns and 203 yards and made the defense look sadder than that little boy who cried after the Pistons-Pacers brawl five years ago.

And what did West had for an explanation?

“The defense played well.”

Bullcorn.

Your team just let a guy run roughshod over your secondary, you have a quarterback placed in terrible situations, and an offensive coordinator that should be replaced by my buddy Bradley “Nutz” Greer, though I know for a fact he would know better to come and coach at a school like Memphis.

Oh wait, he goes there.

Simply put, I have no more love to give to the football program for the University of Memphis, something I cringe at saying because that’s the place my mother has worked for over 20 years.

You guys got spoiled when DeAngelo was there, and once he left, West couldn’t find a player with that talent again.

And now instead of contending year in and year out for a C-USA title, something the Tigers didn’t even win when DeAngelo was here for that matter, you’re left wondering what could have gone right.

Here’s what needs to go right in the moment for the program.

Should Central Florida beat a tattoo on the Tigers, hold a press conference Sunday afternoon and relive Coach West effective at the end of the season.

Give the fans some hope, R.C.

The Darth Visor Cometh: Week Four College Football Picks

This is my second picks column of the 2009 season.

Last week, the big winners were Memphis, Georgia, Florida (by the grace of Grace Walker), Kentucky, and North Carolina.

I thought Michigan State was going to get another win against the Irish in South Bend, but Notre Dame found Touchdown Jesus when they needed it the most. It marked the team's first win against the Spartans in South Bend since 1993, when Lou Holtz was the coach.

So here we go.

Ole Miss vs. South Carolina

If the Rebels want to make a statement in the SEC, they must realize that the Gamecocks are not the University of Memphis or SE Louisiana.

Jevon Snead went 16-of-28 for 209 yards passing against SE Louisiana, but it's been the defense that has made the difference for the Rebels this season.

For the Gamecocks, after their close loss to Georgia last week, a shot at the No. 4 team in the country on Thursday night is just what they need in order to be a legit contender in the SEC East.

Doc's Pick: Ole Miss

Kansas vs. Southern Miss

While this week has been nothing nice for the Jayhawks' football program after their highly-publicized fight with the basketball team, the week could get even tougher with noted giant-killer Southern Miss.

The Golden Eagles are led by running back Damien Fletcher, who has 344 rushing yards and four touchdowns so far in the young season.

Kansas, on the other hand, has Todd Reesing, who is on his way to being the best quarterback in Jayhawks' history.

Doc's Pick: Southern Miss

Memphis vs. Marshall

This should be a fun game to watch for a couple of reasons.

First, Tommy West doesn't have Arkleon Hall starting at QB for another week.

Second, yours truly will be at the game thanks to free tickets from Memphis Sport magazine.

Doc's Pick: Memphis

LSU at Mississippi State

In 2007, when the ESPN cameras went down to Starkville, the Bayou Bengals put a stomping on the Bulldogs en route to their national championship.

This time around, LSU returns to Starkville, and while Ole Miss and Alabama have gotten the pub, the Bayou Bengals look to make a statement.

On the other hand, Dan Mullen's introduction to the SEC in his first season as head coach is going to be a long one.

Doc's Pick: LSU

Miami vs. Virginia Tech

My friend Jeremiah Mooney asked my opinion of this game, so I figured that I should give it now on B/R.

Miami proved itself worthy of winning the ACC by beating Georgia Tech last Thursday. Anytime you beat a contender the way Miami did last week, you have my respect.

But Virginia Tech isn't going down without a fight. Expect this game to be another all-out grindfest in Blacksburg.

Doc's Pick: Va. Tech.

Arkansas vs. Alabama

Arkansas' offense is really good, no lie.

But Alabama's no Missouri State.

Ryan Mallet is going to have to avoid making costly mistakes against the Tide's punishing defense.

Doc's Pick: Alabama

Iowa at Penn State

Trust me, it was all good when Iowa beat Penn State last season in Iowa City.

But this year, the Hawkeyes are heading to Happy Valley to face Joe Pa and company.

Don't expect this to be anything happy this time around.

Doc's Pick: Penn State

Purdue vs. Notre Dame

The true rivalry game in the state of Indiana.

The Irish are coming off their first victory against Michigan State at Notre Dame Stadium, while the Boilermakers are looking to avenge their loss to Northern Illinois last weekend at Ross-Ade Stadium.

With the Irish firing on all cylinders so far in 2009, Notre Dame could get its fourth win in five against the Boilers.

Doc's Pick: Notre Dame

And there you have it.

I went 5-4 last time, so I look to make a huge jump from that piss-poor record this week.

Later days.

Knowing the Opponent: Durham Bulls

“Never underestimate your opponent; that is the worst thing you could possibly do.”- Ryne E. Hancock December 12, 2008

Durham Bulls

Affiliate: Tampa Bay Rays (since 1998)

Home Park: Durham Bulls Athletic Park (capacity 10,000)

The Skinny: The most famous minor league team in baseball history, the Bulls have played in Durham since 1902, when the franchise was a member of the North Carolina League. However, the team is best known for the movie Bull Durham which was filmed at their former ballpark Durham Athletic Park. From 1926 to 1994, this ballpark has been home to the team and their snorting bull, which was immortalized in the movie as well.

Titletown: While it has taken the Redbirds nine years to win another PCL championship for the Bluff City, the Bulls have been the opposite. Since joining the International League in 1998, the Bulls have won four division titles and three Governors’ Cups. In 107 years of baseball total, the Bulls have won championships in 1924, 1925, 1929, 1930, 1940, 1941, 1957, 1965, 1967, 2002, 2003, and 2009.

Notable Players: In over a century of baseball in Durham, players like Joe Morgan, Ryan Klesko, Chipper Jones, Kevin Millwood, David Justice, Ron Gant, Rusty Staub, David Price, Evan Longoria, and countless others have made a name for themselves in the city.

The Road to Bricktown: Durham won the International South division by two games over Gwinnett, finishing 83-61. In the first round of the playoffs, the Bulls defeated Louisville in five games before sweeping the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees to win the Governors’ Cup.

Did You Know? Joe Morgan is the only Durham Bull to have his jersey retired by the franchise, which occurred in 2002.

Milton Bradley, Take a Look in the Mirror

On Sunday, the Chicago Cubs' career of the most disappointing guy to hit Chicago, ever since Kevin Orie, ended.

No, it wasn't Alfonso Soriano (who I'm sure isn't going anywhere, anytime soon), but your favorite moody right fielder, Milton Bradley.

Bradley was suspended by the Cubs prior to the Cubs-Cardinals game in St. Louis, which was won by the Cubs 6-3 in 11 innings, after a three-run home run by Jake Fox.

The reason for the suspension was due to the fact that Bradley, who was signed by the team to a $30 million deal before the start of the 2009 season, has constantly ripped the team and its fans for a variety of reasons and in the process, overstayed his welcome in the Windy City.

I wrote about this back in August, concerning the fact that Bradley, who has something that a lot of people would wantto have, a talent to share with the world, but instead of channeling that talent, he becomes a world-class a**hole with his team. The result being a one-way ticket out of town.

According to Bradley, he said that he felt isolated in the clubhouse by his teammates.

Not true.

You're only isolated because you sir, choose to be isolated from your teammates.

Judging from what Ryan Dempster said and this is from one of the funniest guys in baseball, if you don't have a desire to play every day and have fun, then the biggest problem isn't the team.

But you.

If I don't reach out to people on the campus of Christian Brothers University, where I am a senior, and isolate myself to the point where I'm locked in my room all the time instead of enjoying life, it's not CBU's fault, but my own.

Bradley claims that it was a racist environment at Wrigley Field, which was the same thing that LaTroy Hawkins said five years ago.

As I said in August, Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, and Fergie Jenkins were black superstars who loved playing in Wrigley Field and white fans embraced them with open arms, despite the fact that Chicago has always been a city with terrible race relations.

What happened was that Bradley, unlike Banks or Williams before him, as well as Derrek Lee and Soriano now, didn't perform to the best of his abilities.

Trust me, I'm sure there were a small minority that said racist things in the bleachers, but when you don't perform to the best of your abilities, whether it's school, your job, or even on the diamond, don't expect appreciation for your work.

That's life.

You brush your shoulders off, move on, and be a team player.

Obviously, Mr. Bradley didn't get the message and now he's paying for it.

Kiffin's Humble Pie and Other Leftovers

I originally wanted to start writing this article on my weekly picks when the season started two weeks ago, but with school and work as well as late-night messaging, I waited until this weekend to start with my picks column.

Of course, in the world of college football, you never know what can happen, so chances are if you are reading this, please don't take my words as gospel.

It can be easily called fallacy with a grain of salt.

So here's the games:

Memphis vs. UT-Martin Some sense was knocked into Tommy West's head this week as he decided to start Tyler Bass at QB against the Skyhawks after Arkelon Hall's hapless performances against Ole Miss and MTSU. Somewhere along the line last Saturday, I wished Kanye had did his interrupting in Murfreesboro instead of NYC.

Doc's Pick: Tigers

Tennessee at Florida This has been the game SEC fans been waiting for, ever since Lane Kiffin opened his big fat mouth about beating Florida on September 19th, something akin to what Jim Tressel said when he took the job at Ohio State in 2002. However unlike the Buckeyes of 2002, the Vols are not national championship contenders and the team they face Saturday has a guy by the name of Tim Tebow at QB.

Doc's Pick: Gators

Notre Dame vs. Michigan State Both teams are looking to bounce back from disappointing losses last weekend. The Spartans lost to Central Michigan at home while Michigan put a stamp on their fast start by beating Notre Dame. The Spartans have owned South Bend lately, winning their last six at Notre Dame Stadium and humbling Charlie Weis in the process. Judging from the looks of things and given the history of Michigan State against the Irish in Notre Dame Stadium, it could be a long day for Irish fans.

Doc's Pick: Sparty

East Carolina vs. North Carolina East Carolina slayed some big names in 2008, defeating West Virginia and Virginia Tech en route to a C-USA championship, but on the opposite side of things, the Tar Heels, with their defense, are looking to be the dark horse in the race for the ACC. Expect this to be a hard-fought game Saturday at Kenan Stadium.

Doc's Pick: Tar Heels

Auburn vs. West Virginia For the first time in a minute, Auburn's offense has given Auburn fans to gloat about however one must understand that it was against Mississippi State, in which quarterback Chris Tate threw for 186 yards and running back Ben Tate rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown. On the other hand the Mountaineers, led by quarterback Jarrett Brown and running back Noel Devine, are making West Virginia fans forget Pat White and Steve Slaton.

Doc's Pick: Mountaineers

Mississippi State vs. Vanderbilt The Bulldogs, smarting from their 49-24 loss to Auburn, are set to take on a Vanderbilt squad who played well in their loss against LSU and is looking to rebound against a Mississippi State squad that allowed on average 391 yards in their first two games. State's defense is going to make some improvements this week but it won't be enough for the victory.

Doc's Pick: Vanderbilt

Georgia vs. Arkansas The Bulldogs are coming off a 41-37 win over the Gamecocks while the Razorbacks are coming off a bye week after beating Missouri 48-10 in Fayetteville. The Bulldogs bounced back in their win against South Carolina and with the defense' assignment to stop the arm of quarterback Ryan Mallett easier said than done, the Bulldogs will have their hands full against Arkansas but will still pull a victory.

Doc's Pick: Georgia

Louisville vs. Kentucky Not too long ago, the Cardinals had the best program in the Commonwealth while Kentucky was trailing along. These days, Kentucky is reigning supreme in recruiting and wins, making it to three straight bowl games, winning two of them while Louisville is still trying to get things back to the way things were not too long ago. Apparently, all the recruiting and athletes that Kentucky has will factor in the outcome.

Doc's Pick: Kentucky

So there you have it, my first picks column of 2009. Let the debating begin.

Later guys.

Catching Up With...Kyle O'Neil

Kyle O’Neil and Christina Quaratone Feb. 27, 2008

The state of Minnesota has given us plenty of things to rant and rave about.

Whether it was the play of Randy Moss and now Adrian Peterson, who is making fantasy owners’ faces light up after how he ran over Cleveland’s defense Sunday, or the fact that it was the setting for a movie that starred Marissa Tomei opposite Christian Slater and home to many of Harmon Killebrew’s majestic homers, the state has given us plenty to offer over the years.

Enter Kyle O’Neil.

A witness to many of yours truly’s embarrassing moments in North Highland Park, as well as the infamous one-on-one game against Aimee Grissom during the last week of the 2007-08 basketball season and the constant pleas from me to stop drinking Cokes, the Minneapolis native was one-third of the “Minnesota Gang,” a trio of soccer players who came south to Memphis to play soccer for Crichton College.

O’Neil and fellow Eastview alum Todd Meyer arrived in Memphis in 2007, followed by Tyler Perevich in 2008, and to be quite honest, their brief time in the Bluff City was far from boring.

“Coach Jeremy,” O’Neil said, referring to Crichton’s men and women’s soccer coach from 2007-09, “was our coach in high school, so when he took the job at Crichton, he told us to come down to Memphis.”

Bradley Greer and Kyle O’Neil at Crichton’s homecoming game in 2008

“It was a complete 180 from the atmosphere in Minnesota,” he said, reflecting on the atmosphere of Memphis, “They couldn’t have been two more different places.”

O’Neil said that his best memory from his freshman year was when he moved into his apartment and met Crichton legend Brandon Privett, along with Bradley Greer, Cathal Lynch, and Gary Allen.

“Those guys became friends for life, ” he said.

In his first season for the Comets, O’Neil scored only one goal, which came against Williams Baptist on September 24th of that year, and would be the only goal for him that season as the Comets finished 1-14-2 and last in their final season in the TranSouth.

But the most memorable moment on the field for O’Neil came when the Comets faced the Lynx on August 23rd of last year, when he got injured.

For a week, the buzz around campus was what exactly was said to the referee by O’Neil.

“I asked him where did he get his license from,” he recalled.

However, after missing nearly a month of the 2008 season, he would return to the team and score two goals that year for the Comets, who improved to 2-14-2.

Like many in North Highland Park, O’Neil never saw the near-shutdown of Crichton coming.

“I always thought,” he said, “that the students’ tuition kept business afloat. They never gave us time to prepare ourselves, so I was pissed.”

According to him, if there had been a season, O’Neil believes that the soccer team would have kept improving and when I mentioned Greer’s name, after he earned second-team A.I.I. (Association of Independent Institutions) for being one of the best goalies in the NAIA, he had this to say:

“No doubt he would have been one of the best goalies this year. Then it was his senior season.”

Today, Mr. O’Neil is currently attending classes at Minnesota State University in Mankato and is playing club soccer for the school.

“We had three tough games this weekend,” he said, “but the team’s really good.”

When asked one thing he would have wanted from Crichton, he had this to say:

“My money.”

Memphis Redbirds Inching Closer to Title

If the Redbirds win the city’s 17th professional championship and the 14th in the city’s baseball history, let it be known that not too many people in Memphis have taken notice of the success story that has been the Redbirds in the postseason.

On the strength of Trent Hamilton’s homer in the sixth inning, the Redbirds inched ever so close to the first pro championship for this city since the defunct Memphis Xplorers won the AF2 championship in 2005.

The Redbirds defeated the RiverCats 3-2 in game two of the PCL Championship Wednesday night at Autozone Park.

Adam Ottavino earned the win for the Redbirds while Chad Reinke took the loss for the Rivercats. Pete Parise earned his fourth save of the postseason, shutting down the Rivercats in the ninth inning to give the Redbirds the win.

Friday night, the Redbirds will face the RiverCats in Game three of the PCL Championship, with one goal in mind.

Finish the mission.

Game time—9:05 Memphis time at Raley Field.

Wildness After All These Years

In my generation, the last true pennant race was 1993, when the Braves and Giants were clawing for the NLWest, only to see the Giants with their 103 wins miss out on the postseason.

The next year, Bud Selig decides to give more teams a chance to head to the postseason by implementing the Wild Card, which would be the best team in the National League or American League that didn't win their division.

Since that implemention, baseball in the last decade-and-a-half saw a lot of thrilling pennant races.

Here's five of the best in the National League since the Wild Card came into play:

2008 (Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets) The New York Mets, who lost the NLEast in 2007 on the final day of the season to the Phillies were in a virtual tie with the Milwaukee Brewers on the final day of the season. For the Mets, the final day of the season in 2008 was also the last day baseball was to be played in Shea Stadium while the Brewers had their rivals to the south, the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park with a crowd ready to erupt. All it took was Ryan Braun's homer in the eighth inning and the Marlins beating the Mets to give Milwaukee its first postseason appearance in 26 seasons.

1998 (San Francisco, New York Mets, and Chicago Cubs) If not for a dropped fly ball, we would have never heard of Brant Brown, who made the misfortune of playing for the Chicago Cubs that season. Brown dropped a routine fly ball with the sunlight distracting him, giving the Brewers the win and the Cubs tied for the Wild Card lead with the Mets. However, the Mets would fade down the stretch and the Giants would tie with the Cubs on the final day of the '98 season to play a one-game playoff at Wrigley Field, which would be won by the Cubs, giving their first clinch of any kind at Wrigley since 1938.

2007 Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres Colorado, which had Garrett Atkins, Todd Helton, and a guy named Matt Holliday in their lineup, came out of nowhere in mid-September, winning 14 of their last 15 games and forcing a playoff with the Padres, which completed probably the second biggest collapse in 2007 thanks to Matt Holliday's slide, which is still debatable in San Diego.

2004 Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros After coming within five outs of their first World Series in 58 years in 2003, the Cubs looked to contend for the NLCentral with the Cardinals and Astros. While the Cardinals ran away with the Central, the Cubs' only hope in reaching postseason was by winning the Wild Card. In Houston, the Astros fire Jimy Williams and replaces him with Phil Garner, who guides the team to an improbable postseason berth due in part to the Cubs' foldaroo in the final weeks of the 2004 season.

1999 Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets The Reds that season had one of the best road records in the National League. Led by Sean Casey, Barry Larkin, and Mike Cameron, it seemed as if the Reds were going to make the playoffs for the second time in five years. However that was not to be as the Mets defeated the Reds in a one-game playoff en route to the 1999 NLCS and the Reds' fortunes sank after the devastating loss in the one-game playoff. Since 1999, the Mets have made the postseason three more times including that season and the Reds have not.

So there you have it. Let the debating begin.

The Time Is Now For Tiger Football

About a month ago, a hayseed from Texas tried to test my fan-hood, something that in a city like Memphis, is somewhat hard to do.

"You can't like Memphis basketball and dislike their football team," he said to me via the wonder that is Facebook.

"Yes I can," I replied, "You're not from here, so your opinion doesn't matter. Memphis football has sucked for years. No one really gives a crap about them."

In the 22 years that my mother, Joyce Hancock, has worked for the school, the Tigers have enjoyed only eight winning seasons in football since she began working there in 1987.

Take that same time span of 22 years with Tiger basketball and you get 20 post-season appearances, including the 2007-08 Final Four season, six Sweet 16s, four Elite Eight's, and three NIT Final Fours.

What does that tell you?

The University of Memphis know exactly where their monies are coming from, and unfortunately it's not the football program.

No friggin' duh.

It's quite clear that while the administration have made strides to improve the basketball program during the Calipari era, and attract big-name prep stars to come to the Bluff City, the same couldn't be said about football.

Tiger football, sadly, has been filled with players that teams from the BCS didn't want mainly because they didn't have the grades to qualify for schools like Arkansas, Tennessee and Ole Miss.

Just saying.

After DeAngelo Williams played his last game in 2005, West didn't get anyone close to the calibre of a star like DeAngelo.

Instead of building relationships with coaches in the Memphis area, West and his staff shut most of them off, although players like Brandon Patterson of Germantown High School, Joseph Doss of Melrose High School, and Marcus Hightower from my alma mater, Whitehaven High School, have had some success.

But it still hasn't translated into wins and most importantly, conference championships.

In the 13 years that Conference USA has sponsored football, Memphis are the only program who have not win a conference title.

Even Tulsa and Central Florida, newcomers to the league, have won conference championships.

So have Tulane, who won their title in 1998 under Tommy Bowden and finished ranked seventh in the nation, and they play in a sterile dome that can't sell out for their games.

So Coach West, don't give me that facilities crap when you say that facilities cost you the game.

Tulsa and Rice have two of the smallest enrolments in Division One, and they find a way to be competive, so enrolment shouldn't be an excuse.

What is the problem then?

The football program has been run as nothing more than a hobby at the University of Memphis.

That's right, a hobby.

And until they realize that running a football program isn't a hobby, then they won't get the picture.

Until then, the state that Memphis football finds itself in, like or not, will remain just what it is, a hobby.

So Who Is Really My Favorite College Team?

As the son of a University of Memphis employee, I’ve seen my share of Tiger sporting events, ranging from baseball games at Nat Buring Stadium to football games at the Liberty Bowl.

But in the 22 years that my mom has worked at the University of Memphis, the Tigers in that period of time in football have had eight winning seasons in 21 years, compared to the 20 postseason appearances the Tigers have had in basketball in that same time span.

I was taught from an early age that rooting for Tiger football was a warmup to getting ready for the basketball season; you know, preparing your voice and your cheers whenever Louisville and Cincinnati would come to town.

And given the fact that the Tigers really never had a sustained history of winning in my basic lifetime in football, I just never cared one way or the other on how they did. I will admit that in 1996, I was one of those people who ran onto the field when Memphis finally beat Tennessee and I remember well the replay of that game the following Sunday.

But it never made me a fan.

The one thing that attracts people to a team is a sense of tradition as well as a sense of winning and given the fact that Memphis was never a real powerhouse in football, I simply had an “I could care less” attitude about Tiger football.

So once I reached seventh grade, I decided to shop around and find out what team would fit me best.

LSU Tigers (A lot of people don’t realize this, but WWL in New Orleans can be picked up here in Memphis. As a kid I tuned into the 1997 Independence Bowl between LSU and Notre Dame on WWL. That Tiger squad had players like Kevin Faulk, who went on to play for the New England Patriots.

I liked the fact that they played the bulk of their home games at night and the fact that they were on television a lot and in 2000, beat Tennessee at home in a thriller in overtime, which resulted in the goalposts being torn down. I favored them to win over Oklahoma in 2004 when the schools were playing for the national championship.)

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (This actually made a lot of sense because as a teenager, I played QB a little bit, mainly on Bradley Street, the street I grew up on and around that time Georgia Tech had a quarterback by the name of Joe Hamilton, who despite his size, became the greatest quarterback in Georgia Tech history.

Those Yellow Jacket teams were exciting to watch during the late '90s and early part of the decade. Problem was that they couldn’t get past Florida State, who won the ACC almost every year until 2002 when the Maryland Terps won their first ACC title since 1985. The Yellow Jackets’ last ACC title was in 1998 when they tied with Florida State.)

Missouri Tigers (One of my old friends from junior high school was an unabashed Missouri football fan and had a hand in trying to convert me. At the time, the Tigers had Brad Smith, Justin Smith, and Justin Gage on the squad.

Mizzou had some good years under Larry Smith, but after back-to-back bowl games in 1997 and 1998, the Tigers fell on hard times and wouldn’t recover until the arrival of Gary Pinkel, who has led the Tigers to three bowl games and two Big 12 North division titles in his tenure)

So what does all this tell you?

First and foremost, as a sports blogger I have to be objective and unbiased in my writings, which explains why I write opinions on ACC, SEC, and Big Ten football, regardless of fan allegiance.

Secondly, there are like over 100 teams in Division 1-A, and with all those teams, it’s hard to pick who to like and stick with it from week to week, unless if you’re used to seeing successful teams in your hometown, something I never saw in Memphis but other places like Oxford, Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, and of course, Knoxville knows how it feels to have winning seasons, rabid fans, etc.

And finally, the next person who asks me who is my favorite football team, I’ll just say this.

I have none.

Not because I don’t want to have one, but because the world of college football is fun, filled with hot chicks, beer, tailgates, and cornhole as well as exciting finishes.

No one tries to take the fun out of college football because this is the last chance these guys get to experience football without the hassles of contracts, agents, and gossip columns.

So, literally, all I’m saying is this, I love college football without any allegiance to a team.

Period.

"The Answer" Is Wait and See

As much as I loathe Allen Iverson for what he did in Detroit with my Pistons, ruining what was a very tightly knit unit that was one of the best teams in the East, I have to put my dislike for the guy aside.

Not because I want to, but because the biggest acquisition in the history of the Memphis Grizzlies' franchise occurred on Wednesday. "The Answer" finally answered the question that many Memphians have been asking.

Will he or won't he?

Via Twitter, Iverson, who will be earning $3.5 million this season for Memphis, ended all of the speculation and agreed in terms to play for the Grizzlies, his third team in the last four years.

The contract also includes incentives for making the playoffs, something that hasn't happened since 2006 (when they lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the first round), and if they win the NBA title.

As soon as the announcement was made, friends of mine on Twitter said they were considering season tickets and heading to Iverson's famous after parties.

Of course, all the after parties a person can throw at Level II or Plush can't translate into wins and butts in the seats.

What Iverson has to understand in coming to one of the youngest teams in the NBA, is his role as seasoned veteran.

Over the years, Iverson has had difficulties understanding leadership and taking whatever role that comes to him (example: Detroit) and clashing with coaches (example: Philadelphia), which is why very few teams were interested in him after his debacle in Detroit.

Now he has a chance to do something similar to what he did in Philadelphia (when he entered the league) and turn the fortunes of this franchise around and do it with a trio of young stars in O.J. Mayo, Rudy Gay, and Hasheem Thabeet.

While we shouldn't pencil the Grizzlies in for the playoffs, it's not hard to say that they will be improved from last year.

If Iverson stays more than one year, maybe there could be a chance, but I don't think people should get their hopes up on the fact that the Grizzlies will make the playoffs.

It's too soon.

University of Memphis: Pom Pom Squad Overpowering, Offense Not So Overpowering

Not too long ago, I saw that the Florida Marlins were considered by many as the smartest organization in baseball because they employ hot chicks who keep the fans entertained when the Marlins aren't doing so well.

If you let me tell it, the reason the University of Memphis is the smartest football program in the country is because of the fact that there are hot chicks on the pom squad today that probably could have done better at quarterback than Arkleon Hall.

In today's 45-14 thrashing at the hands of No. 8 Ole Miss, Hall and company had the ball longer than Ole Miss (32:27 to be exact) and ran more plays than the Rebels.

Pretty accomplished, don't you think?

Wrong.

Hall, who probably would have been outplayed by any of my female friends (insert name please), looked more lost than anything out there on the field by doing one thing a quarterback should never do.

He overthrew the ball to a tall receiver who has the ability to just reel the ball in for the catch with their long arm.

Second thing on the list?

A botched draw play on 4th-and-inches. Being that I once played quarterback, anytime you've got a 4th-and-inches, you pound the middle with the running back, which means the line shifts forward and the running back goes through for the extra inch.

Not a shotgun play.

The thing that I also gathered from this debacle was the fact that the play calling by Clay Helton, who probably has a two-by-four for a brain, was indeed questionable.

Your team is down 21 points against a top-10 team, and you decide to play footsie instead of manning up and putting up a fight.

You don't run the play clock down to 15 seconds when you're trying to get back in the game with 10 minutes to play.

That's stupid.

And then in the postgame conference, instead of being riled up about the plethora of mistakes, Coach West just shrugs it off, and instead of taking responsibility for some of the problems in the game, he shifts it towards a single lineman.

Not a good way to motivate your team and certainly not a way to boost team morale.

If the Tigers lose to Middle Tennessee next week in Murfreesboro, chances are the same 50 million people who read the message boards or participate in them are going to be ready to pack Coach West's belongings and send him on his merry way back to Georgia so he collaborate with Gucci Mane.

And the ones who go to the games, all they will have to look forward to is the performances by the pom squad.

Don't forget the beer, either.

The Last Summer Dance for Jim Thome?

Outside of Albert Pujols, who came onto the baseball scene in 2001, my sophomore year of high school, my two favorite players as a kid were without question Robin Ventura of the White Sox and Jim Thome of the Indians.

Because of Jim Thome and others, it became cool in the 1990s for people to wear Cleveland Indian hats and jerseys around the country.

As a first baseman and outfielder in junior high, I even wore my socks like Thome and imitated his batting stance, until my baseball coach warned me that having a stance like Thome would mess by back.

But the real reason why I rooted for Thome was because he stood for what was right with the game of baseball.

Unlike Barry Bonds or Jose Canseco, he wasn't a douchebag that tried to upstage his teammates.

He was by all accounts, a Midwestern guy who was getting paid to do something that he loved to do, play baseball to the best of his abilities.

And that he has done for so many years.

The only news that Thome has made over the years that wasn't baseball-related was the fact that he put all 10 of his nephews through college.

Not putting someone through a bar window.

Paying out of his own pocket for his relatives' education.

When Thome hit number 500 in 2007, I wrote a glowing column on how Thome, with every swing of his bat during my childhood, made me love playing baseball even more when I played because he understood like so many that it was a pure game.

Regardless of how many chumps use steroids.

Regardless of how many guys throw tantrums and cry to the media.

Early this morning, one of the greatest players of my generation ended up getting traded to Los Angeles with Jon Garland in hopes of putting a jolt in the Dodgers' lineup and reunited with Manny Ramirez.

And maybe, if this winds up being his last season, a chance to win a World Series title.

A good guy ending on a high note.

The stuff that movie producers crave.

Too bad it's not 2006 again………….

The one thing that was missing from my debut book about the Memphis Redbirds and the fun I had being an intern as broadcaster for Fantasy Radio was the excitement of a pennant race that involved the Redbirds.

Fact is, the only exciting things for that season was the return of a girl who calls me “Pumpkin” that I knew while writing for the North Shelby Times as a 19 year-old and well, a chocolate cutie and a candy bar.

I mean a person would need to have something to look forward to when they go to the ballpark when their team is really sucky right?

Why not two cheerleaders, one that gets on your nerves and one that you liked to ignore the fact that the team on the field was just plain awful?

But enough of flashbacking to 2006, let’s focus on 2009 in which the Redbirds and the Nashville Sounds are playing what is by far the most important series of the season for both teams beginning Monday at Herschel Greer Stadium.

For the Redbirds, who have gone 4-8 on the season against the Sounds, the objective of the series in Nashville is simple, win at least three against the Sounds in Nashville and Labor Day weekend will be not only an appreciation for the fans, but also a celebration of a great season of baseball at the corner of South Third and Union.

Lose 3 of 4 and then the only saving grace for the ‘Birds would be to sweep the doubleheader on Saturday against Oklahoma at Autozone Park.

So what do the ‘Birds need to do?

Bring the bats up Interstate 40 (On this recent road trip, the Redbirds, long known as one of the worst hitting teams in the PCL, have turned into a Memphis version of the Lumber Company that was made famous in Pittsburgh. Against Round Rock on August 24th, the Redbirds slugged four straight homers in the 8th inning en route to a 12-7 win over the Express. Last night against the Isotopes, the Redbirds slugged three homers to counter the Isotopes’ five in an 11-9 victory in New Mexico, including a grand slam by Matt Pagnozzi.)

One game at a time philosophy (In a perfect world, it would be nice to sweep the Sounds and then just spend the weekend celebrating in Memphis this weekend, however, the Sounds, who defeated Round Rock last night and has won two straight, are going to be motivated since it’s the final homestand of the season in Nashville. Realize from this point that the Redbirds, Sounds, and the I-Cubs are playing an eight-game season from Monday on.)

Ignore the scoreboard (In 1926, Cardinals manager Rogers Hornsby instructed that the score for the Cincinnati Reds game against the Boston Braves not be shown in New York when the Cardinals and Reds were in the hunt for the National League pennant. Can’t turn the scoreboard off in 2009, but what is happening for the I-Cubs, who are also a game and a half out, should be farther from both the Sounds and Redbirds’ minds.)

Do all these things and more, the Redbirds will more than likely just need two wins and a Nashville loss to head to their second playoff appearance in franchise history.

Short Hops

David Wright is on the way back to recovering from his concussion during the Mets-Giants game on August 18th. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Wright was working out with his teammates at Wrigley before Saturday’s game against the Cubs.

When the Cubs got their first hit against the Mets in Saturday’s game, it was the 6,981 game in which the Cubs were not no-hit. The record was held by the New York Yankees, which went 6,980 games without being no-hit from 1958 to 2003 when the Astros no-hit the Yanks in Yankee Stadium.

Louisville clinches their second straight IL West championship, while Durham and Gwinnett are going into the final week of the season tied for first in the IL South.

Rich Rod: Down To The Fourth Quarter?

The Michigan way, something that has been edified by coaches such as Fritz Crisler, Bo Schembechler, and Lloyd Carr, has been a way of clean play, staying loyal to the team concept of football, and being a representative of all that comes with being a Michigan man.

Never in the long history of Wolverine football has there been a hint of NCAA scandal, something that couldn't be said at places like Alabama, Florida, and my boys on the Plains.

All of that could change given what was reported in the Detroit Free Press when a group of current and former Wolverine players, accused Rich Rodriguez and his staff of rule violations.

After reading several tweets from Joe Schad, who interviewed a couple of players, the claim from them that they were normally in the facility from 10:30 in the morning to 9:30 at night, going far and beyond the allowed four hours that the NCAA requires per day.

According to the NCAA, during the football season, the weekly amount of time for football-related activities is 20 hours, so if this deems to be true, then Rodriguez, who went 3-9 in his first season in Ann Arbor, could be facing more pressure than a guy who likes a really hot girl in his church but is falling short of expectation from his peers.

The report also goes to say that 7-on-7 drills, which are according to the NCAA, supposed to be player-coordinated and without the presence of coaches, were observed by coaches.

So that means instead of trusting the players, Rodriguez decides to micromanage his program and have Big Brother watch over drills that are supposed to separate the ones who want to turn the corner around in Ann Arbor and the ones who don't.

The third allegation?

According to the same players that were interviewed by the Free Press, the expectation from Rich Rod and his staff was to spend two to three times the amount that is required by the NCAA for offseason workouts, which is eight hours including film review.

In Ann Arbor, the thing was that if you didn't do the required stuff for strength and conditioning, more work would be added on to it.

Sort of like when during my time at Crichton College, where I was a student assistant basketball coach, one of the players that didn't perform well on the track ended up being let go.

Obviously, and this coming from a guy that saw a half-dozen players let go last season, the stuff that can happen at a small school like Crichton can't happen at a school like Michigan.

You can let go of a half-dozen players at Crichton or some other small school and no one would give a damn.

But do something like this at a program that has tradition and integrity as its nameplate, then something should be done if these allegations are true.

And trust me if they are, then Rich Rodriguez will see a great big pink slip more than likely in the coming months.

That is, if some act of God happens.

Mets Fans, I Feel Your Pain

When I was in the Fan Radio booth during the summers of 2005 and 2006, I spent much of my time trying to be “that guy” on the microphone.

Instead of being my own person and having the same small-town Illinois accent that I’ve carried since childhood, I tried to be a mixture of Wayne Hagin (pictured) and Chris Berman on the microphone.

That tactic blew up in my face.

In fact, the only reason I became popular as an announcer was because my home run call was in honor of a cute girl that I knew at the ballpark. What better way to cement your name on Wikipedia by having your home run call placed above Hawk Harrleson, who I believe has the most annoying home run call in history.

But I digress.

If I had to pick three announcers that I would not want to listen to, the first one that would come to my mind would be Mets announcer Wayne Hagin. He's been broadcasting in the majors for over 25 years for teams like the Rockies and (cough, cough) the Cardinals after Jack Buck left the KMOX booth in 2001.

While Jack Buck made you feel like you were at the game during his 47 years of being the soundtrack of Cardinals baseball, Hagin sounded more like the guy that would read the entire 26-volume World Book on audio cassette.

In fact, if one heard the leadup to Jim Edmonds’ dramatic home run in Game 6 of the NLCS, instead of just saying, “Here’s the pitch” and letting the listener at home figure out whether or not the pitch was a strike or a ball, he talks about Edmonds’ flair for the dramatics and then provided the Cardinal Nation with his most famous call during his short stay in St. Louis:

“SWING AND A LONG ONE! WE GO TO GAME SEVEN...A GAME WINNING HOME RUN!”

While I admit, it wasn’t the same as Jack Buck’s calls during the 1985 NLCS, Hagin, instead of letting the crowd noise tell the story, he kept on talking through the whole commotion at Busch, giving new meaning to the word douchebag.

When he switched over to KPLR-TV with another drab broadcaster in Rick Horton, Hagin again proved why most people (probably including myself) don’t need to go into broadcasting.

From what some of my friends have told me in the past, maybe instead of teaching English after graduation, the world of radio broadcasting is a good backup plan for yours truly.

Hopefully, if I do become a baseball announcer, it won’t be anywhere in the same breath as Mr. Hagin.

The Gary Deberry Theory Can be Applied to Milton Bradley

Ever knew the guy in high school who had all the talent, all the girls, and scholarships from all corners of the country, yet he blows it by doing something stupid?

In high school, I remember a couple of those guys, one was a guy by the name of Gary DeBerry, who at last check was working in the Wal-Mart in Whitehaven on Highway 51 and Holmes Road, who had God-given talent but screwed it up by being a douchebag.

Maybe Milton Bradley was one of those guys in high school that had an inferiority complex because he shared his name with a famous board game company and as he got older, he took that angst out at every stop in his major league career.

Before the 2004 season started, Bradley got into an altercation with Cleveland manager Eric Wedge, only to see that tantrum send him packing to Los Angeles, where he helped the Dodgers win the 2004 NL West title, only to see again his temper get the best of him by getting into with a fan and throwing a fit after being ejected from a game and traded from the Dodgers to Oakland, where he would be a part of another postseason team that would get swept by the Tigers in the ALCS.

So if you’re keeping score at home, Bradley by this point has been in Montreal, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Oakland all in a span of six years.

Then Bradley finds a home in San Diego, which for a time, was on its way to winning the NL Wild Card, until he becomes the victim of an altercation between himself and an umpire that became the first in a series of events that led the Padres to collapse down the stretch and the Colorado Rockies their second playoff appearance and first pennant in team history.

So after this collapse, Bradley gets shipped to Texas, becomes an All-Star and just when things seem to be on the right track for the guy, he complains about how Kansas City broadcaster Ryan Lefebrve made judgments about him on the air.

The lasting image of that episode with Bradley was him being in tears, which in a way was understandable, but when you say that you’re strong, but not that strong, then that shows where his heart was.

I mean, no one wants to be attacked by a person that doesn’t know them.

No one does.

But after one year in Texas, he heads to Chicago to play rightfield for the Cubs, and using the same piss-poor excuse that Latroy Hawkins used in 2004, he accuses the Cub fans of being racist.

Stop right there.

I’m not going to say that all Cub fans are lovable and serene in this column because I know personally there are some who are complete idiots especially after they have 14 beers.

But the way Bradley has played this season in Chicago, after forgetting there are three outs in an inning and performing poorly at the plate, he has every right, in my opinion, to get booed.

And some of the things that he’s said in the media, has not only made the situation worse in Chicago for him, but the Cubs’ clubhouse.

The next thing that should be on his agenda should be a U-Haul one-way to St. Louis.

Oh wait, the Cardinal Nation don’t want him.

Maybe the Royals.

Porn Stars Are Keeping the Faith in Chicago For The Cubs

During the Cubs-Cardinals series this year, my buddy and Cubs fan Joe Meyer kept getting the same comeback from me when he started making snide comments about the Cardinals and the city of St. Louis.

“At least our fans aren’t porn superstars,” I said, referring to a girl who goes by the name of Next Door Nikki, a porn star who lives in the suburbs of Chicago.

As you can see by the pictures of her, you can tell that her pictures alone would make a Cardinals fan like myself become a Cub fan, however if I ever did become one, I would have to be of strong faith and fiber to deal with the disappointment that the Cubs have been for over 100 years.

Including this year.

If God was a Cubs fan, the Cubs would have been in perfect position to make the postseason for the third season in a row, something that has not happened since 1908, when the Cubs won the last of their back-to-back World Series.

Back then the Cubs were led by Johnny Evers, Joe Tinker, and Frank Chance, hence the double play combination of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance, who helped the Cubs win three pennants and two World Series.

It would be 100 years until the Cubs made back-to-back postseason appearances and after the season they had in 2008, Cub fans believed that this was the year that they could go all the way.

Yeah, all the way to July.

Since the All-Star break, the Cardinals have went from fighting with Milwaukee and Chicago to acquiring Matt Holliday and John Smoltz to 9 games up on the North Siders.

The Cardinals have won 8 of their last 10 while the Cubs have lost six of ten, giving new reason to Gucci Mane’s “Go Ham on ‘Em”, a phrase that I had to explain to my friend Jeffrey this afternoon.

Of course, with that being said, the Cubs are looking to do one thing after this latest disappointing season in Wrigleyville ends.

Build for 2010, figure out a way to again appease the faithful in Chicago, and then in the end have Cub fans’ feelings hurt and stomped on.

After all, that’s what 100 years of losing can do for your psyche.

Another Chapter in Rivalry Between Memphis and Nashville

There is nothing that excites baseball fans more than the thrill of being in the hunt for the playoffs, especially when the cities are two ancient rivals.

No, I’m not talking about Boston and New York.

But Memphis and Nashville, which has been slugging for more than 100 years in the Southern Association, the Southern League, and now the Pacific Coast League.

Both cities have been breeding grounds for players like Prince Fielder, Albert Pujols, Adam Wainwright, J.J. Hardy, and countless others in the last dozen years.

And to be perfectly honest, I’ve been witness to some memorable moments between the ‘Birds and Sounds over the years.

There was the pitcher’s duel between the two teams in 2005 when Anthony Reyes struck out 15 Sounds and Wes Obermuller had an equally good day on the mound for the Sounds.

And of course, my own “Can’t Hardly Wait” moment in 2006 when the two teams met on the Fourth of July in front of a Memphis baseball record crowd of 18,302 and a chocolate cutie came up in the broadcast booth for a couple of innings with yours truly.

But one moment that stands out in my mind was when the Redbirds clawed with the Oklahoma Redhawks in their first season for the division title, which was when my grandmother was dealing with a battle with colon cancer that she would lose a month later.

The Redbirds had to face the last-place Sounds for four games in Nashville and had to win at least three to stay with the Redhawks.

Thanks in part to a home run by Darrell Whitmore on a Wednesday afternoon, the Redbirds’ chances were pretty much null and void after that.

In 2005, the Redbirds and Sounds were part of a three-team race with the Omaha Royals, which went down to the final series of the season, resulting in the Sounds edging the Redbirds and then winning the PCL championship.

So, with less than two weeks to go in the season and a four-game series in Nashville, another chapter in this classic minor league rivalry is ready to be written.

Let’s hope it’s on our side of the state.

Memphis Tigers' Road to C-USA Title May Be Helped By Beer

Quick! When was the last time the University of Memphis won a conference championship in football?

If you're a diehard fan, you know the last time the Tigers won a conference championship in football was 1969, when the Tigers won the Missouri Valley Conference, their second straight conference championship in football.

In the 13 years that Conference USA has sponsored a conference championship in football, the Tigers are the only charter member of the conference to not win a title in football.

Even Tulsa and Central Florida, programs that were literally in the toilet until joining C-USA, have won conference championships in football, and they've been in the conference only a scant four years.

So, what is the problem?

Although Tommy West has led the Tigers to six bowl appearances in seven seasons, he has yet to produce a conference title in the Bluff City for the Tigers.

And apparently since Southern Miss, East Carolina, and Tulsa are going to be the bonafide favorites to win the conference yet again, another season of false hope seems to be on the horizon for Tiger football.

That is, until yesterday.

Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, home to the Tigers since 1965, and owned by the city of Memphis, will sell beer this season as a way to defray the amount of money the city would lose, totaling at $261,000.

According to Jack Sammons, chief administrative officer for the city, it would net the city $200,000 in the process with the sales of beer.

Not only that, the constant flow of beer from the concession stands would give the Tigers a much needed boost on the football field.

Somewhere, Homer Simpson would be proud.

Beer might be the solution that gives the Tigers a conference title for the first time in 40 years.

Florida's Other Reason to Go Undefeated

The Florida Dazzlers have been a breeding ground for hotness, mainly because our favorite sports babe Erin Andrews was a former Dazzler. Here's some gratitious photos of the Dazzlers. The object of the Dazzlers dance team is to distract players from opposing teams and give opposing coaches like Lane Kiffin reasons to divorce their wives. Because of this dance team, the Gators have won two national championships in football in three years and seemed primed to win a third one in 2009.
Begin Slideshow

For the Memphis Redbirds, Playoffs Would Be Good Distraction

It was only four years ago when I was writing about the playoff chances of the Redbirds, who at that time were in a dogfight with the Nashville Sounds and the Omaha Royals for a chance to go to the playoffs.

Unfortunately, the remnants of Hurricane Katrina washed away any chances of the Redbirds making a run for the playoffs. The Redbirds finished 70-71, right behind the Nashville Sounds, who ended up winning the PCL championship.

After winning in Round Rock last night 6-1 behind the pitching of Oneli Perez and a clutch homer from David Freese, the Redbirds are giving their faithful visions of something that hasn't happened since I left Fairview Junior High School in 2000.

Playoff ticket availability.

I know, it’s kind of funny to think about that as a fan. However, this city needs something to distract them from the ongoing saga of the upcoming special election for mayor and the sting the Memphis University Tigers got from the NCAA’s ruling on the 2007-08 season.

Think of what could happen if the Redbirds follow this scenario. They hold off Nashville and Iowa to win the American North. They win the conference finals against the Isotopes, who already secured a spot in the playoffs, and then beat the Sacramento RiverCats for the PCL championship.

Can you imagine that, Redbird fans? A non-tainted championship parade down Beale Street for our home team.

Let’s hope that dream comes alive in the final weeks.

Wide Margin a Good Thing Or a Bad Thing?

A few days ago, the AP polls were released, ranking the Florida Gators at No. 1 with 58 of the possible 60 first-place votes.

That amount of first-place votes is the most in the history of the AP poll, which began in 1950. They surpassed the 2007 USC squad that received 62 of 65 votes.

The only problem was this: that team, led by quarterback John David Booty, didn't get a chance to play for the national title, which was won that year by LSU, who lost to Kentucky and Arkansas, becoming the first team in college football history to win the national title by losing more than one game.

So my thought is this: is the wide margin set between the Gators and the rest of the college football world a good thing or a bad thing?

Good, because Florida is returning Tim Tebow at quarterback and Brandon Spikes on defense as well as guys who are used to this type of attention.

Bad, because you never know what the season can bring in college football.

No one saw a year like 2007 coming, when Michigan lost to App. State and later on, Kentucky beat LSU and Stanford beat USC.

No one did.

While I believe personally Florida will win the SEC hands down, let's be careful in crowning them National Champions.

Strange things do happen, ya know.

Golfin' after dark

The last time I picked up a set of golf clubs was when my senior class went to the now-closed Bogey’s on Fischer Steel Rd. in Cordova and Carl Foxx showed me the nuances of minature golf.

Justin Hall socked one that probably hasn’t landed after six years after from high school.

During my time at Crichton, my friends Paul Mahoney and Anthony Tomassetti tried to get me to play golf with them in the final months of my time in North Highland Park over at the Links at Galloway, but because of my then-job and lack of funds, that never happened.

The cool thing I found out about living in Oakdale was the fact that unlike the greenspace in Madison East, there was a putting range in the courtyard of my apartment complex, giving aspiring golfers to work on their putting skills.

Obviously on Saturday night, my neighbors and yours truly didn’t try to practice putting.

But in the interim, our golf swings.

The idea of playing golf after dark last night in Oakdale was to see how many balls could sail over the roof of the section of the complex that bumped against Avery and since Christian Brothers has a real golf team, a few of the guys went outside to whack the balls over the roof, not on the roof like home runs at Tiger Stadium.

“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” one of them asked me.

“I mean if I can whack balls over 50-foot trees in baseball, then certainly I can whack golf balls over a roof,” I replied.

What I didn’t mention was the fact that as a boy, I crushed golf balls with a Louisville Slugger onto Interstate 240, only to piss off a member of the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates that was working on their golf swing.

While the first three socked theirs over the roof, it was time for yours truly to attempt to put one into orbit.

What I forgot to realize from my time playing baseball, that in baseball striding and movement was a big part of my swing, golf wasn’t about that.

The first swing I took, which came after saying the 23rd Psalm, dented the gutter and hit a box.

Second swing?

Knocked on someone’s door.

So in an effort to work on what was wrong with my swing, my newfound neighbors placed an empty golf ball box.

“Try to hit the blue part,” they said.

Realizing that it was like being in the batting cages, I managed to do just that.

“You just need to stop moving your feet a lot,” they said.

Well, duh.

STGS SEC Rankings—The New Office Week

Alright gang, with all my stuff moved into the brand new home office in Oakdale, I decided to take a break from my moving in and cleaning up to give the masses what they need, the preseason SEC football rankings.

1. Florida (13-1 in 2008) Defending national champions and all-world quarterback Tim Tebow is set to again rule the college football world. However, seven starters return on offense, but 11 will return on defense, including linebacker Brandon Spikes, who returned two interceptions for touchdowns in 2008.

2. Tennessee (5-7) The Lane Kiffin era in Knoxville has begun on a somewhat contentious note, given the many things that Kiffin over the offseason. Hopefully, Kiffin won’t have to eat humble pie during the SEC portion of the season.

3. LSU (8-5) The Bayou Bengals could do no better than a berth to the Chik-Fil-A Bowl in 2008, where they defeated Georgia Tech, but with running back Charles Scott and quarterback Jordan Jefferson returning, the Bayou Bengals could be the odds-on favorite to win the SEC West in 2009.

4. South Carolina (7-6) In 2007, it seemed as if the world was the Gamecocks’ and that the SEC Nation was just living in it. Then the proverbial splat came to Columbia and the Gamecocks missed out on bowling. In 2008, the Gamecocks raced to a 7-3 start, only to lose three straight including the Outback Bowl loss to Iowa. The strength coming into the 2009 season is from the defense, which returns players like Eric Norwood and Cliff Matthews. Norwood led the team with nine sacks and collected 75 tackles while Matthews collected three sacks for the Gamecocks.

5. Ole Miss (9-4) Is it just me or is it that Houston Nutt did more with Coach O’s players than Coach O did with Coach O’s players? In a season that saw the Rebels win the Cotton Bowl over Texas Tech and Florida in Gainesville, the expectations of the Rebel Nation are higher than ever before. Jevan Snead is back at quarterback while end Greg Hardy leads the defense in what could be another banner season in Oxford.

6. Alabama (12-2) After winning the SEC West in 2008 and a 12-0 regular season, the Tide looks to be in rebuilding mode this season. Replacing John Parker Wilson at quarterback is Greg McElroy, who impressed Nick Saban in spring practices. Another bowl berth should be in the cards for the Tide, but games against Virginia Tech in Atlanta and road trips to Ole Miss and Auburn will test the Tide’s season and figuring out where it will be at the end of the season. The good thing is that Tennessee and LSU are visiting the Capstone, so those games should be barometers in the Tide’s season as well.

7. Georgia (10-3) Joe Cox takes over at quarterback for the departed Matthew Stafford while sophomore Caleb King fills in for Knowshon Moreno at running back in Athens. Don’t think just because the Dawgs lost Stafford and Moreno, the talent that was left between the hedges was little to none. Who knows, the Dawgs could surprise some people.

8. Auburn (5-7) The anemic offense last year became the ultimate sin that deposed Tommy Tuberville in the Plains. Enter Gene Chizik, who previously served as a defensive coordinator at Auburn and later Texas, who had five wins in two seasons at Iowa State. Running back Ben Tate returns and with it the hopes of a 1,000 yard season in the Plains.

9. Kentucky (7-6) History has been kind to the Wildcats’ football over the last three years, acheiving three straight bowl berths for the first time since the Bear Bryant era. However, with only John Conner and T.C. Drake returning at wide receiver, quarterback Mike Hartline will have to do a lot more than he did last year in Lexington.

10. Vanderbilt (7-6) After winning their first bowl game in 53 seasons and finishing behind Florida and Georgia in the SEC East, the Commodores look to break down more doors in the West End.

11. Arkansas (5-7) Let me say this, Petrino did less with Houston Nutt’s players than Houston Nutt did with his players at Arkansas. After getting a huge helping of humble pie after leaving the Atlanta Falcons, Petrino struggled in his first season but there should be hope on the horizon. Just not this year.
