How a Simple Letter and a Bit of Luck Put Jimmy Devellano on Top

I had the opportunity this past week to meet Jimmy Devellano, the Detroit Red Wings’ Senior Vice President and Alternate Governor.

Speaking at the Toronto chapter of the SIHR (Society for International Hockey Research) monthly meeting, Devellano recanted his early life growing up in Cabbagetown and Scarborough.

Despite being an admitted lousy hockey player, his passion and quest for a career in the game drove him to write a letter to Lynn Patrick, general manager of the expansion St. Louis Blues in 1966.

Devellano just wanted the opportunity to be a scout and said that he would work for free for the team. Patrick agreed and after a year, he was a full time scout for the Blues.

After a five-year tenure, he was let go by the Blues for personnel issues. As luck would have it, the NHL was expanding again.

He made a trip to the NHL draft that July and got in contact with the expansion New York Islanders' GM, Bill Torre.

After a dismal first season in Long Island, Devallano and Torre quickly scouted and drafted some of the greatest players in NHL history: Denis Potvin, Bryan Trottier, Clark Gillies, and Mike Bossy.

He told the audience how drafting Mike Bossy nearly didn’t happen.

It was down to Bossy or Dwight Foster, who had led the OHL in Scoring.

Bossy had 77 goals in his last junior season, but couldn’t check.

Devallano explained how coach Al Arbour told Bill Torre that it’s hard to find a big-time scorer. They had the playmaker in Trottier and the protector in Gilles. Arbour said he’d teach Bossy how to check.

“He’s the greatest, purest goal scorer that I ever saw in my life,” he said. “And Al Arbour was right, he did teach him how to check.”

A trade later for Butch Goring was the final piece and in their eighth season in existence, the Islanders were Stanley Cup champions.

Devellano was not around for the Islanders' fourth straight Cup. Little Caesar’s owner Mike Ilitch had bought the Detroit Red Wings in 1982 and his first move as owner was to hire Jim Devellano as their GM.

Devellano was excited to be given his dream job with an Original Six team. At the time, the Red Wings were a struggling franchise and had just 2,100 season ticket holders.

“If (Jim) Balsillie were around then, he would have wanted to move the team to Hamilton,” he said.

By the start of his first season in Detroit, the Wings managed to double their season ticket sales, but still had dismal attendance numbers.

The Wings battled through seasons of disappointments in the '80s. It didn’t faze Devellano or team owner Mike Ilitch’s confidence in him.

“I promised Mike and Marian Ilitch that we’d win the Cup in eight years. It took us fifteen.”

In 1983, Devallano drafted his franchise player, Steve Yzerman, and began building a team around him.

He was one of the first GMs to scout seriously in Europe and behind the “Iron Curtain.”

Then, scout Ken Holland found the likes of Sergei Fedorov, Vladimir Konstantinov, and Niklas Lidstrom. These players quickly put the Wings as a playoff contender.

He felt that the 1989 draft was one of the greatest in the team’s history, if not NHL history, and by 1990, Devellano was the team’s senior vice president.

The players were there, but they lacked the right coach to get them to the pinnacle. Ilitch wanted Mike Keenan, but Devellano didn’t.

The owner put his trust in him again and couldn’t have been more happy with his choice: Scotty Bowman.

Devellano admitted that Bowman and Yzerman had their differences.

Yzerman was a scorer, but Bowman wanted him to play a more defensive role. Bowman even wanted to trade the team’s captain to the Ottawa Senators.

Fortunately for Detroit, the two worked things out and Bowman turned Yzerman into a much better defensive center. A Frank Selke Trophy in 2000 was proof that it worked.

Finally, in 1997, the Red Wings clinched the first of four Cups in an 11-year period. Not to mention, they have become one of the most successful teams of the last 15 years.

Devellano then briefly spoke on the tragic limousine accident involving Vladimir Konstantinov.

He told us that both Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay and Konstantinov still have their own stall in the Red Wings dressing room and that he visits it whenever he attends games.

During the Q&A session, Mr. Devellano answered a variety of topics on former players, coaches, the Phoenix Coyotes and New York Islanders situations, and even offered advice for some up and coming scouts.

True story: Ilitch and Devellano signed future Hall of Fame defenseman Brad Park away from the Boston Bruins by awarding him two Little Caesar’s franchises in Boston as a bonus.

I asked him if there was a player that he really wanted as a scout and the team’s GM went against him—the essential “come back to bite you in the ass” player.

He couldn’t come up with a name off hand in St. Louis, but in New York he had the upmost confidence from Bill Torre as his choice in that category.

It was interesting to learn to that the Wings' initial choice before Yzerman was hometown boy Pat Lafontaine. The Islanders picked him right ahead of Detroit.

Bob Tindale, the former head of Boston Bruins scouting, also in attendance, then added that Boston wanted Keith Brown in the 1979 draft, but after Chicago picked him, they had to go with their second option, Ray Bourque.

Devellano concluded that the draft relies on a lot of luck, and that in his career he has been extremely lucky.

More of Mr. Devellano’s story in hockey can be found in his book, The Road to Hockeytown, Jimmy Devellano’s Forty Years in the NHL.

Breaking the Ice With New Montreal Canadien Mike Cammalleri

The Montreal Canadiens’ Mike Cammalleri stopped by the Hockey Hall of Fame last week to do a photo shoot for the cover story in the latest issue of The Hockey News.

He also had a chat with THN’s Ken Campbell. The full interview is available here.

Cammalleri talks on his decision to sign with the Habs saying that the opportunity to play for the most recognized of the Original Six teams influenced his decision.

He also thinks the pressure of the media scrutiny in Montreal will push him in a positive way.

“You can use that to take your game to a level that’s going to be your best and the going to be the best for your team and your teammates,” he said. “I don’t think you can be more engaged than playing for the Montreal Canadiens.”

He looks forward to the prospect of playing with the other new offensive acquisitions, Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez.

“Both guys are real exciting. It would be a great dynamic line in my eyes,” he said.

When asked on the new identity of the Canadiens, he felt that it looks like GM Bob Gainey has assembled a team that is going to compete.

“We’ll be there every night to grind it out,” he added “Any time you have success, it’s going to be the direct result of the guys you play with.”

Curtis Sanford adds goalie depth to Montreal Canadiens

OK, cue the music and get all the Fred Sanford jokes out.

The Montreal Canadiens picked up free-agent goaltender Curtis Sanford today, signing him to a one-year, two-way contract.

The Canadiens' press release does not disclose the financial terms of the deal ,but NHL Numbers has him pegged at $600K.

Sanford is a career 37-37-11, with a 2.76 GAA and a .901 Save Percentage.

He saw more action in St. Louis before serving as a back-up, in 35 games for Roberto Luongo, the last two seasons in Vancouver.

With the arrival of Andrew Raycroft in Vancouver, Sanford’s services were no longer needed by the Canucks.

The 29-year-old will find himself in Hamilton as a back-up to Cedric Desjardins and likely be called up if injuries occur to Carey Price or Jaroslav Halak. Such was the case last season with Marc Denis last season.

The Canadiens’ Web site also offers an interesting by the numbers look at the Habs’ newest goaltender.

Another tidbit: He was a teammate of Sean Avery when they played Jr. hockey with the Owen Sound Platers.

Montreal Canadiens-Washington Capitals at the Big Owe?

Above is Montreal's Olympic Stadium with its permanent roof. The retractable one failed.

The Globe and Mail reports that the Montreal Canadiens will play host to the Washington Capitals at Olympic Stadium. The 2009-10 NHL schedule doesn't officially come out until tomorrow.

You've got to wonder if this is such a good idea. Ovechkin vs. hockey's greatest franchise during their centennial is a financial jackpot for the league, but the crowd in the Bell Centre is loud enough. Does one honestly think that the financial and structural disaster from the 1976 Olympics is a safe bet to house 50,000 screaming hockey fans?

I recalled the chunk of concrete breaking off in '94 and the fire in the tower during a Montreal Expos game in '86, but Robert Lefebvre from Habs Eyes on the Prize dug up a list of several other structural problems and incidents that the stadium has faced since its first use.

Now, if a piece of concrete took out NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, many fans would see it as the greatest day in NHL history.

Personally, seeing Youppi under a steel beam wouldn't be so bad for me. I never liked that little orange fuzzbNoceall, even with the Expos.

Roger Tambellini Wins Gretzky Classic; Gretzky Speaks on Tour, Sponsors

Wayne Gretzky's second annual Nationwide Tour golf tournament finished Sunday with Roger Tambellini earning the victory with a 20-under 265 score, taking the $144,018 prize purse and the coveted Gretzky champion's ring.

Canadian Olympian Catriona Le May Doan took the celebrity title in a scorecard playoff with a 42-under 243 score, edging out tournament host Wayne Gretzky, to win the keys to a brand new 2010 Ford Mustang. Cassie Campbell finished third with a 40-under 245.

The Amateur title went to Steve Nicklaus, son of golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who shot a 39-under, 246 winning a brand new 2010 Ford Taurus.

"Congratulations to Roger, Catriona and Steve—they all played an impressive couple of rounds this week," said Wayne Gretzky.

"Catriona put the pressure on and made it tough to keep up—we'll hope for a rematch next year."

As with the 2008 event, celebrities drew large crowds during the first two rounds, with notable names not making the cut including Charles Barkley, Brett Hull, Todd Bertuzzi, Donovan Bailey, Damon Allen, Mike Keenan, Janet Gretzky, and many others.

Also making a massive contribution was the local community, as more than 700 volunteers rallied around the event, providing support on the course and through hospitality, security and transportation responsibilities.

"Last year, we were overwhelmed with the support from the friends, volunteers and local communities," said Wayne Gretzky.

"There was no way we could have hoped for more this year but we have been completely blown away, with more people helping us make this event something special."

As the 15th of 29 events of the 2009 Nationwide Tour season, fans were treated to some of golf's next "great ones," as the pros competed at the mid-way point of their season.

The Nationwide Tour's top 25 earn a spot in the PGA Tour next year.

"The Nationwide Tour is thrilled to come back to Canada this year," said Jim Duncan, Nationwide Tour tournament director.

"The fans, staff and community made this a very popular event for players in 2008, and this year is no different. The courses are in perfect shape and the players really love competing here."

Wayne Gretzky also acknowledged the generosity of the many corporate sponsors who made the financial commitments to the event during difficult economic times.

"This event couldn't happen without the support of our sponsors," he said.

"It's been a very humbling experience to see their commitment to helping make this tournament great. I can't thank them enough."

Proceeds from the tournament go to the Wayne Gretzky Foundation whose mission it is to provide less fortunate youth with the opportunity to experience the sport of hockey.

This year, the event gave back to the community as well when local charities were given the opportunity to sell tickets to the event, taking in 50 percent of the revenues for their own causes.

Roger Tambellini Leads The Wayne Gretzky Classic After Three Rounds

Roger Tambellini continued his rock-solid performance at the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic with a 66 in the third round of play – a score five under par.

He is at 18 under for the event and leads by two shots over South African Garth Mulroy.

Blake Adams and David Branshaw are tied for third at 14 under and Chris Anderson is in fifth at 12 under.

“It seemed more exhausting today. It was so windy—probably a good day to fly a kite but a bit tougher for golf,” Tambellini said beside the 18th green. “But it was a good solid round. I made a lot of four and five footers for par and was able to hang in there.”

He has held the third-round lead only one other time in his career at the 2003 Albertson's Boise Open, the first of his two victories on the Nationwide Tour.

Tambellini has also played two full seasons on the PGA Tour (2004 and 2006). He is currently 17th on the Nationwide Tour official money list. At the end of the year, the 25 leading money-winners earn PGA Tour cards for the 2010 season.

Tambellini played alongside Mulroy, who started the day three shots behind.

“I wasn’t watching the leader board, but it was nice to see him rolling in some putts too,” Tambellini said of his playing partner.

“When you have somebody doing that in your group it gives you a good positive feeling.”

In the amateur competition, the team of former Olympic speed skater Catriona Le May Doan and Nationwide Tour professional Derek Lamley lead by three strokes at net 37-under par.

Former women's hockey player and Hockey Night in Canada reporter/analyst Cassie Campbell sits in third, just five strokes back.

Last year's defending celebrity winner, Brett Hull, struggled with his putting game and did not make the cut after two rounds.

Tournament host Wayne Gretzky and Derek Gillespie are in second place at 34 under.

Calgary native Dustin Risdon became the first player of the 2009 season to make three eagles in the same round.

He did it in impressive fashion with a hole-out from 40 yards on the par-four ninth, a 30-foot downhill putt on the par-five 13th and another hole-out on the par-four 15th with a gap wedge from 128 yards.

Risdon finished the day with a five-under 66, 11 under overall and is tied for sixth.

The last player to make three eagles in a round was Kyle Reifers in the opening round of the 2008 Bank of America Open.

Reifers opened the tournament with a course-record 11-under-par 61 in the first round, had a rollercoaster one-over second round, and sits eight strokes back, tied for 11th place, through three rounds.
Blake Adams posted the low round of the day with a seven-under-par 64.

The full leader board can be found here as well as the celebrity leaders.

The Montreal Canadiens: Who Will Lead Them?

Well, the Montreal Canadiens roster officially got trimmed by one more player.

Despite a “rally of the masses” on Sunday afternoon at the Bell Centre, Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey told CJAD radio on Monday that Alex Kovalev would not be returning.

Fans rallied Sunday to keep Alex Kovalev in Montreal

Hours later, Kovalev took the money—$10 million over two years—and ran up the highway to the Ottawa Senators.

The Northeast Division will be fun to watch this season, without a doubt.

With Kovalev’s departure and the likely signing of Saku Koivu to either Buffalo, Atlanta, Anaheim, or whatever square Eklund’s rumor dart hit this afternoon, this leaves the captain and all the assistant captains from last season's team off to greener pastures. Mike Komisarek defected to the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1 and Christopher Higgins was traded to the New York Rangers on June 30.

The question now has to be asked, who will be the next captain?

Andrei Markov has been an assistant captain in the past, but is unlikely to be captain. You have to remember that Koivu was criticized for not speaking French. Markov can barely speak English so it’s safe to rule him out. The Kostitsyn brothers? Georges Laraque ? Forget it!

Scott Gomez seems to be an early popular choice, despite not playing one game for the Canadiens. Sorry Mr. Gomez, but there’s too much tradition to just walk in and take the “C." Ditto for Mike Cammalleri and Brian Gionta.

In all likelihood two of these three will be alternate captains.

Young bucks Josh Gorges, Maxim Lapierre, and maybe Guillaume Latendresse would be good choices as an alternate captains in my opinion, but I feel none of this trio is at a full leadership level.

Roman Hamrlik is the long-time veteran on the team, but could be moved before the start of the season.

In any event, the Canadiens have never gone without a captain in their history.

Jean Beliveau is the Canadiens’ longest-serving captain

The captaincy of the Montreal Canadiens has always been voted on by the players, so ultimately it will be up to the final roster when it is set sometime in late September. The players may elect to go a shared route in the 2009-10 season. Guy Carbonneau and Chris Chelios alternated months in the 1989-90 season when the team vote was as close as the Quebec Referendum vote.

Either way, that individual is the go-to man for the fans and media of a team, with 100 years of history and 16 years and counting without a Stanley Cup. Preferably, I want a long-standing captain like Koivu—win or lose—and not a revolving door that we saw in the mid-90s.

Let’s not rule out the current captain just yet, shall we?

List of Montreal Canadiens Captains

Teemu Selanne Will Retire After the 2009-2010 NHL Season

The upcoming 2009-2010 NHL season will be the last for Anaheim Ducks forward Teemu Selanne.

The 39-year-old winger told Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat that he is an old man in a young man's game.

"It is a forum for young boys," Selanne said.

"But the right diet, rest and muscle care help to prolong a career. Personally I am injury-free, I feel young at mind and pursue a lot of activities."

Selanne admitted that he had thought about retirement after this season but has decided to hold on for one more season.

"The next season is without doubt my last. This time my decision will be kept," he said.

A 10-time All-Star, Selanne broke into the NHL in 1992 with the Winnipeg Jets and set a rookie record for goals in a season with 76.

He has recorded 614 goals in 1237 games with the Jets, San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche and the Ducks.

Selanne also commented on Saku Koivu, who is now an unrestricted free agent and figured by many not to be returning to the Montreal Canadiens.

The duo have played together in international competition, and Selanne would be eager to play alongside his fellow countryman in Anaheim.

"The chemistry between us two has worked well on the national team. It would be interesting to see how our interacting would improve if we should play together on a daily basis," Selanne said.

The duo were the top scoring pair during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.

While Selanne has retired from international play, he is debating taking part in the 2010 Games in Vancouver.

Montreal Canadiens Draft For The Future

The Montreal Canadiens wrapped up this year's Entry Draft and seem to be happy with what they managed to pick up.

Although a "big splash" blockbuster deal for Vincent Lecavalier never arose, GM Bob Gainey got the man he wanted in the draft.

With the 18th selection overall on Friday, Montreal took Quebec native Louis Leblanc to a tremendous ovation at the Bell Centre.

"Louis fit perfectly into our wheelhouse," Gainey said.

"We got a good, competitive player."

Gainey added that they would have traded up to get him.

LeBlanc played in Omaha of the USHL--59 points in 60 games--after finishing his midget hockey in Quebec.

"I was hoping that it was the Canadiens," LeBlanc said after being selected.

LeBlanc will play for Harvard this fall and said he will wait one of two years to decide on when he would be ready to join the Canadiens.

Gainey verified those comments by giving him time to develop at the college level.

Montreal had no picks in the second round, but took Joonas Nattinen and defenceman Mac Bennett in the third round.

Nattinen is a good size kid already at 6-foot-2, 183 lbs and is a player not afraid to go to the net in heavy traffic.

Bennett is classed as a puck moving defenseman whose father, uncle and grandfather have all played professional hockey.

He will play with the University of Michigan after a year in the USHL.

In the fourth round, the Canadiens took Russian forward Alexander Avstin.

Avstin was the leading scorer in the KHL's second division last season and may have been missed on the radar by other teams.

"He wants to play here," said the Canadiens' director of player development Trevor Timmins.

Avstin was in Montreal for the draft and at the NHL Combine in Toronto earlier in the month.

Timmins added that he feels Avstin could play in the AHL immediately if he wanted to.

It should be noted that only seven Russians were selected this year, indicating some tentative choices by team GMs now that the KHL is drawing attention.

Fowards Gabriel DuMont, Dustin Walsh and Michael Cichy were then picked up in slots 139, 169 and 199 respectively.

Montreal's lone trade throught the draft was giving up their 2010 sixth round pick to Pittsburgh for their seventh round pick this year.

The Canadiens used that to take 6'6" Finnish goalie Petteri Simila 211th overall. Simila played on the same team and has the same coach of the Predators' Pekka Rinne.

What's with Montreal and tall goalies?

Carey Price is 6-foot-3, while last years pick Jason Missiiaen is 6-foot-8.

Perhaps Bob Gainey, part of the NHL rules committee, knows something about future net size regulations down the road.

Montreal clearly began building their future in the forward position in this years draft.

Five of the junior level picks are centres (three rh and two lh shooters).

Having drafted several defenceman in the past few drafts and foreseeing Carey Price as the franchise goalie, Bob Gainey now has a good mix in development at several levels.

It will be five years until we see the true effect of these eight player, if any, in the NHL.

Bob Gainey just finished year five of his "five-year plan;" maybe the plan works in five-year installments.

Time will tell.

Centering in on the Montreal Canadiens' First-Round Pick

With just under 24 hours to go before the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Habs GM Bob Gainey is busy reviewing scouting reports and evaluations before making that key announcement on Friday.

Many panelists and mock-drafts already posted online all seem to agree that, this year, Montreal needs to get a centre to bolster the lineup down the road.

This season’s crop of prospects seems to be the year for the Canadiens to do just that.

Barring a blockbuster trade, we can rule out John Tavares, Brayden Schenn or Matt Duchene to be picked by the Canadiens.

So let’s look at just a handful of centres that could go in the middle area of the draft.

The Canadiens will pick 18th unless they trade up.

Montreal Canadiens-Tampa Bay Lightning: Deal Will Depend on Islanders' Pick

T-minus 47 hours and counting until the start of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

As team general managers and staff from all thirty teams, as well as top prospects expected to go in the first rounds, ascend on the Bell Centre, the trade rumors circulate more and more.

For Montreal Canadiens fans, the “topic-des-last six months” has been the prospect of Vincent LeCavalier coming to Montreal.

An apparent deal between the Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning was killed when names of players the Canadiens were planning to move were made public.

Canadiens' GM Bob Gainey pointed fingers at Tampa GM Brian Lawton for leaking the names after Montreal’s season ended.

Lawton quickly dismissed the allegations.

With the Lightning struggling in the bank account, it seems imminent that they will move their franchise player before his no-trade clause kicks in on July 1.

Despite the verbal exchange between Lawton and Gainey, a Montreal-Tampa deal still registers high on the rumor charts.

The question is, who is Tampa willing to move?

In media interviews today, Lawton seemed determined that LeCavalier would remain in Tampa.

Lawton smiles too much when he talks for my liking. I think he’s bluffing.

So if he is moving LeCavalier, the Canadiens would have to give up a fair bit.

The initial speculated deal in January involved forwards Chris Higgins and Tomas Plekanec, prospect defenseman P.K. Subban, and draft picks/prospects going to Tampa.

This scenario could still work with Higgins being a RFA. The prospect could be a goalie with Kari Ramo reportedly off to the KHL.

Subban would likely be substituted as he just signed with the Canadiens this spring.

The key to a deal between these two teams could depend on who the New York Islanders select first.

If New York goes with Victor Hedman, that’s how the deal could go.

With Tampa having the number two pick Friday, they can grab John Tavares to fill the void at forward and still have Martin St. Louis and the learning Steve Stamkos with a lower payroll for a couple years.

The alternate scenario could go a different way though.

Still provided that Hedman goes first, Tampa could give up their pick (Tavares) and a few other lesser players for Montreal’s 18th overall pick and a smaller package of players.

Throwing Martin St. Louis into the mix would sweeten the deal for the Canadiens while also helping Tampa’s pocket book.

Montreal retains some cap room to announce that Saku Koivu (on the cheap), Alex Kovalev and, maybe, Mike Komisarek (depending on the Islanders choice) are re-signed.

If Tavares goes to the Islanders, we could see a possible deal along the latter of the two or a deal back to square one.

With a stash of centres in this years draft likely to go in the first round, both Montreal and the Lightning could still have a winner in the draft down the middle.

In all likelihood, we won’t know officially though until sometime early Friday evening when NHL commissioner Gary Bettman takes the stage to make any deal official.

Georges Laraque Urges Canadian PM to Stop Seal Hunt

For those of you who have visited Habs’ tough guy Georges Laraque’s website, you are likely well aware of his devotion to PETA.

On Wednesday, Mr. Laraque appealed to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to stop the annual seal hunt.

The letter is in it’s entirety below from a PETA press release.

Please keep in mind that the content is strictly the comments of Mr. Laraque on his and PETA’s behalf and do not express my own personal opinions or those of BleacherReport.com.

_________________________________________________________

June 17, 2009

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper

Office of the Prime Minister

Dear Mr. Prime Minister:

Blood on the ice is fine when it comes to Canada’s national sport because players are willing participants, but the blood of helpless baby seals that stains the ice each year is Canada’s shame.

I’m writing to you on behalf of my friends at PETA and its more than 2 million members and supporters around the world dedicated to the protection of animals.

With the world’s attention focused on the 2010 Winter Olympics, Canada has an opportunity to show the world its best features, including its breathtaking natural beauty, its bustling cities, and its rich culture.

However, the one thing about Canada that I’m not proud of is the annual seal slaughter. Won’t you please consider ending this tragic war on seals?

Every year, sealers kill hundreds of thousands of baby seals, and every year, our country hears the international outcry against this barbaric slaughter.

Surely you would agree that there is something terribly wrong with shooting baby seals or crushing their skulls and skinning the defenceless pups for the sake of fashion.

Hooking is illegal in the National Hockey League, but sealers routinely hook live seals in the eye or cheek to avoid damaging their fur.

Not only is the unimaginable pain and suffering endured by these seals tragic, it is also completely unnecessary. Sealing is primarily an off-season profit venture for commercial fishers, not a subsistence trade for native peoples.

Inuit seal hunting accounts for only about 3 percent of the slaughter.
The international outcry against the slaughter is loud and clear.

The U.S. banned all seal imports in 1972, the European Union recently passed a ban on the importation of seal products to member countries, the U.S. senate unanimously passed a resolution urging Canada to end the slaughter, Russia recently ended its slaughter of seals under 1 year of age, and even Vladimir Putin, who has been known to hunt bears, has condemned the seal slaughter as a bloody business that should have ended years ago.

Please count me among the majority of Canadians who oppose the seal slaughter and are hoping for a permanent ban on this, the largest and most barbaric massacre of marine mammals on Earth.
Thank you for recognizing the urgency of this issue.

Sincerely,

Georges Laraque

Guy Lafleur Gets One-Year Suspended Sentence, Fine

Montreal Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur has been given a one-year suspended sentence, fined $100, and ordered to donate $10,000 to charity for giving contradictory testimony during his son's 2007 bail hearing.

The 57-year-old Lafleur was sentenced Thursday by Quebec Court Judge Claude Parent.

The Crown Prosecutors had been seeking a conditional sentence to be served in the form of community service, while Lafleur's attorney sought a fine.

Lafleur is appealing the guilty verdict handed to him on May 1st and has also filed a $3.5 million lawsuit against the Crown and the Montreal police over the warrant used to arrest him.

State of New Jersey To Declare Martin Brodeur Day

Though he's not up for a Hart or Vezina Trophy this season, but Martin Brodeur will be receiving an award on Thursday.

In a joint resolution of the New Jersey senate and general assembly, June 18th has been declared “Martin Brodeur Day.”

“On behalf of the entire Senate, we’re proud to honor Marty Brodeur as our ‘adopted son,’” New Jersey Senator Richard Codey said in a statement.

“He has kept Devils fans entertained for nearly 20 years and given our state something to be proud of."

He’s a first-rate athlete who can now claim the distinction of being in a league of his own.”

Brodeur, 37, passed Patrick Roy on the NHL’s all-time wins list for goalies this past season, and became just the second goalie after Terry Sawchuk to record more than 100 shutouts.

Todd Richards Get His NHL Coaching Shot With the Minnesota Wild

Well they always say that those who cannot do, should teach.

Apparently that’s the advice Todd Richards took after his NHL playing career failed to take off.

It was announced today that he is the new head coach of the Minnesota Wild.

Picked in the second round by the Montreal Canadiens (33rd overall), Richards never made his debut until 1990, after he finished his career with the University of Minnesota and joined the Hartford Whalers.

The former defenceman was only around for eight regular season games, with four assists. In 11 playoff games he had three helpers.

He toiled in the IHL for nearly a decade, yet his coaching abilities were clearly evident after his pro-career.

He was an an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Admirals, helping to lead his team to the Calder Cup Finals twice, winning it in 2004.

Richard then took the head coaching position for the Penguins AHL affiliate Scranton-Wilkes/Barre in 2006.

He took the AHL Penguins to the Calder Cup Final in 2007-2008.

By the way, the guy who hired him to coach in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is the new Wild GM Chuck Fletcher.

Do the math.

Richards served as an assistant last season with the San Jose Sharks.

The Edmonton Oilers were also apparently permitted to talk to Richards.

Cancer Survivors in the Sports World

It's a disease that has touched pretty much everyone in the world in one way or another.

Either yourself, someone you know, or someone they know is afflicted in someway with this dreadful disease.

With the warm weather now fully working across North America, countless organizations have begun their annual bike rides, walks/runs, motorcycle rides, etc. to get support and attention to fight this dreaded disease.

To get some inspiration, I decide to put a list of just some of the athletes who have suffered through and won their battles with cancer.

Clearly Lance Armstrong (pictured) is the most well known one. His epic fight from cancer to claim seven Tour de France wins put him at the forefront of athletes who have overcome this tremendous obstacle.

Now, let's look at a few others.

Alexei Yemelin to the Habs: “Nyet this Year"

It looks like negotiations between the Montreal Canadiens and their blue-chip Russian prospect, Alexei Yemelin, have broken off.

According to RueFrontenac.com, the blue-liner has signed a one-year contract with AK Bars Kazen of the Kontinental Hockey League.

“Alex will remain in Russia,” said Yemelin’s agent, Don Meehan.

“He was offered better guarantees. I am told that the agreement has a term of one year, possibly two,” he added.

One of Meehan’s employees, based in Russia, is currently preparing the documents.

Many felt that the KHL team would part ways with the 23-year-old after a disappointing regular season.

His performance in the playoffs apparently changed their mind.

Meehan is also the agent for defencemen Patrice Brisebois and Francis Bouillon.

He acknowledged that he plans to meet with Canadiens GM Bob Gainey, hopefully during draft week, to discuss Bouillon’s future.

Meehan has yet to meet with Brisebois to discuss the future of his second veteran rear-guard.

Latest Toronto Expansion Proposal will seal Balsillie's fate.

I’m sure that Gary Bettman’s office gets several proposals on a weekly, if not daily, basis to buy an existing or future NHL team.

The latest proposal issued by Andrew Lopez, a communications specialist who has worked as a motivational speaker for Miss Universe Canada, lays out a vision for a second Toronto team.

Mr. Lopez also noted that $1 billion in private financing is already in place for the proposed expansion team.

The announcement attracted the attention of nearly every major media outlet in Toronto. A dozen TV cameras jostled for position in the back of the room, and reporters filled every available seat.

“We're not sure how (the NHL) or the Toronto Maple Leafs will take this,” said Lopez.

“So we said, 'Let's just share with our city, share with our country, and once they've had a chance to look over what we're proposing . . . by all means, if they consider us worthy, we would be privileged.”

The eager entrepreneur came to the table with a team name, “The Legacy,” a team jersey, and a proposed new arena complex in Downsview Park, in the north end of Metro Toronto.

Lopez said the site would include a community athletic centre, 50-metre swimming pool, four outdoor rinks and public park space among other amenities.

I just have some advice for Mr. Lopez. Read the fine print when negotiating that deal with the city of North York (see Charles Wang).

What makes the proposal truly interesting his his “Mission Statement.”

First of all, he’s not pressuring the league for an expansion franchise, nor is he trying to ruffle any Maple Leafs feathers. Lopez said “we're not here to force our will on anyone. A simple no from the National Hockey League would be OK. We realize it's a very special club.”

“If the National Hockey League comes up to us and says 'You know what, we're going to look at this in five years, 10 years,' ... . that's fine. There is no timeline on this.”

“If the NHL says no, then this dream will stop.”

Toronto Legacy spokesman Andrew Lopez with Hockey Great Herb Carnegie

Lopez, who says his group could have the team up and running by the 2012-13 season, believes the proximity of the Legacy franchise to the Toronto Maple Leafs can create a new and exciting NHL rivalry without pulling fans away from the Air Canada Centre.

"We're not here to compete with the Toronto Maple Leafs," Lopez said. "We're here to be their little brother."

Lopez's group is also proposing that 25 per cent of its annual net profits will be divided amongst charitable foundations and non-profit organizations.

The Future Aces Foundation, started by former hockey player Herb Carnegie, would be the first organization to receive funding.

Carnegie, who will turn 90 in November, attended Friday's news conference.

Mr. Carnegie has also had a long time relationship with Investor’s Group, a highly speculated partner in this proposal.

If successful, the group says it will hand over every dollar of seat licence fees to foundations and charities.

To make things affordable to the eight million plus residents that live in Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe and surrounding areas, Lopez added that roughly half the tickets to every game would be available for $50.

He did say he wasn’t competing with the Leafs, right? OK maybe just a bit.

Lopez also made it clear that he was not interested in an existing team.

"This has always been about expansion, not relocation," said Lopez.

"I commend anyone in the world that loves hockey and is trying to bring hockey to any city. But this is strictly about expansion ... nothing to do with the former Winnipeg Jets or the Phoenix Coyotes franchise."

The NHL has denied any contact or proposals received.

Naturally, at this time, they cannot.

League commissioner Gary Bettman, as stated in an affidavit filed as part of the Coyotes' bankruptcy case, said the only way another team would end up in Southern Ontario is through expansion. He has also said the league isn't looking to add teams any time soon.

To say they’d reviewed the offer would be shooting themselves in the foot.

In any event, the proposal can further diminish the chances of Jim Balsillie’s attempt to bring the Coyotes to Hamilton.

So now we have Mr. Lopez bringing a patient, well thought out proposal with the reported backing needed to start a new team.

On the other hand, we have Balsillie’s “I want, I want” tactics, version 3.0, that came with no formal application for purchase/move of the Coyotes until AFTER court proceedings began.

Even the judge in the case thought that a trifle odd.

The first thing Balsillie did do, after his reported proposal, was to start a web site to sell hats and t-shirts.

The Legacy site is not selling tee-shirts.

Then, he approached the city of Hamilton for a 32-year lease agreement on a building that he later proposes needs a $150 million upgrades.

Oh and he thinks that the taxpayers ought to help out with that.

Wonder if people want their money back for their “Make It Seven” t-shirts now?

He did get some corporate sponsors (Labatt, Home Hardware) on his side, so we’ll have to give him that.

As passionate as Mr. Balsillie’s plea may be in his mind, he really should take a better respect to the NHL’s conduct of business.

In all likelihood his plan to relocate the Phoenix Coyotes will fail.

With Mr. Lopez’s proposal publicly shown, the BlackBerry Billionaire’s chances for a team, after kicking the NHL in the nuts three times, may be gone.

Oh and I have to ask Mr. Lopez.

Sir, please reconsider the team name.

With no disrespect of your intentions to honor Mr. Carnegie, Toronto already has a team with a “Legacy” of losing for over 42 years.

Non-Shocker of the Week: Tony Granato Fired as Avalanche Coach

Well you'd be lying if you said you didn't see this coming.

After having its worst record since moving from Quebec, the Colorado Avalanche officially parted ways with coach Tony Granato Wednesday.

It's no real surprise. After weeks of speculation that Patrick Roy was offered a position in Colorado, Roy announced last week that he indeed had turned down an offer.

Granato's successor is yet to be named, but Avalanche President Pierre LaCroix did announce the hiring of Greg Sherman as the team's new GM.

Sherman replaces Francois Giguere, who was fired in April after the team's last-place finish in the Western Conference.

"I look forward to the challenge," said Sherman in the media release.

"We all know the task ahead and we need to get to work. There are a lot of things to be done here."

"I am surrounded by a group that has great knowledge of the business and we are looking towards the future with a lot of optimism."

In addition to Granto's removal, assistant coaches Jacques Cloutier and Dave Barr, goaltending coach Jeff Hackett, assistant to the general manager Michel Goulet and video coordinator PJ DeLuca were also relieved of their respective duties by Colorado.

The Avalanche aslo announced some new management structure changes.

The team's new management structure will be as follows:

Craig Billington remains as Assistant GM, while Eric Lacroix is the new Director of Hockey Operations.

Brad Smith remains as Director of Player Personnel and David Oliver, based in Cleveland with the teams AHL affiliate Lake Erie Monsters, is the new Director of Player Development.

In all likelihood, a new coach will be announced before the annual NHL Entry Draft near the end of the month.

Jacques Martin Hired As Montreal Canadiens Head Coach

The Montreal Canadiens have begun a new direction with their coaching staff.

In a press conference this afternoon, general manager Bob Gainey introduced Jacques Martin as the team's new head coach.

Martin has spent the last five years in the Florida Panthers organization but began as a coach with the Ottawa Senators.

His departure now leaves a GM opening in Florida.

He ranks in the NHL's top 10 all-time coaching leaders with 1098 games coached (8th) and 517 wins (9th).

Although no mention was made as to the fate of associate coaches Kirk Muller and Doug Jarvis, there is speculation that former coach Mario Tremblay could return as an assistant and that Jacques Lemaire's name is being floated as consultant.

Gainey said that Martin would meet with both Jarvis and Muller in the near future.

One certain coaching change is the dismissal of goaltending coach Roland Melanson.

Many felt that the less than expected performance Carey Price contributed to the coach's departure.

Names being passed on already include Phil Myre, who has worked for Martin before, and Senator's goalie coach Eli Wilson. Wilson could be a front runner as he was a personal instructor for Price in the past.

Martin was also questioned on the possibilities of the Canadiens acquiring the Panthers pending, UFA defenceman Jay Bouwmeester.

Though he wouldn't comment on the subject, there was a grin on the face of the new coach.

Patrick Roy Turns Down Colorado Avalanche Coaching Job

Patrick Roy has put a couple of coaching rumours to rest, for now.

The Hall-of-Fame goaltender held a press conference in Quebec City on Wednesday to announce that he will be staying on as head coach of the QMJHL's Quebec Remparts.

Roy said he phoned Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix Tuesday night to tell him he was not accepting the team's offer to become its new head coach.

"All I can say is that the Avalanche's offer was more than interesting," he said.

Roy did not reveal his conversations with Lacroix, but said he mulled the offer for two weeks before making the decision.

"I have enormous respect for Pierre Lacroix. This is a man who played a very important role in my life, in my hockey career, so for sure I will always have an attentive ear for (him)."

Roy said part of the decision came down to being closer to his family.

His son Frederic plays for the Remparts, but is thinking of giving up hockey, while an older son Jonathan has already left the sport to pursue a music career.

"My quality of life here in Quebec City is extraordinary," he said.

"I adore this adventure, I adore working with youth. For me it's a daily challenge, working to help these youths realize their dreams."

Roy also noted that there were 780 Remparts season-ticket holders when he took over the team. Now, he says there are 7,800.

"The role that the Remparts play in the community is also very important to me," he said.

Roy met with Lacroix in Denver earlier this month, shortly after GM Francois Giguere was fired following Colorado's last-place finish in the West.

Colorado's 32-45-5 record was its worst since moving from Quebec to Denver in 1995.

There was much speculation as to whether Roy had been offered a coaching position, GM position, or both.

Avalanche spokesman Jean Martineau said that Tony Granato, who has two years left on his contract, is still the team's coach.

Martineau would not comment on whether Roy had also been offered vacant general manager job, but said the search continues for "individuals who might be a part of the new management structure."

Roy feels that LaCroix will make the right choice when it comes to a GM decision.

"I'm convinced that the Avalanche will find somebody who is extremely competent, who will eventually bring the team to where it belongs—the summit of the National Hockey League," he said.

Roy also ended other rumours and speculations, saying that his original team, the Montreal Canadiens, had not contacted him regarding any coaching positions.

Judge Speeds Up Phoenix Coyotes Lawsuit

The Judge in the Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy battle has decided to speed up the process.

In a hearing on Wednesday, Judge Redfield Baum referred to the situation as "the 10,000-pound elephant in the room" and said it needed to be resolved quickly.

He set a hearing for June 9 and promised a ruling shortly thereafter.

All briefs and declarations must be submitted no later than June 5.

The hearing was originally scheduled for June 22.

Research In Motion CEO Jim Balsillie has said he will withdraw his US $212.5 million offer to buy the team if the sale is not completed by the end of June.

His offer is also conditional on moving the franchise to southern Ontario.

The NHL is looking for buyers who are willing to keep the team in Glendale, AZ, and deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the League is confident in a ruling in its favour.

In the event they lose, Daly stated that the NHL will appeal if it loses at the bankruptcy court level.

"We're confident in what the law says, and the law is pretty clear with respect to our rights to control both the identity of our owners and the location of our franchises," he said outside the courthouse on Wednesday.

Daly also indicated that the league favoured speeding up the process, and that having the franchise in it's current status further damages an already bankrupt business that lost $74 million over the past two years.

"This is a franchise that obviously needs to improve its revenue streams to be viable," Daly said.

"So this is an important time period right now—and that's why today's ruling in terms of moving up the date for determination on the relocation issue is a good ruling."

Lawyers for Balsillie and Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes argue that blocking the move violates antitrust law, and that Baum has the authority to force the move under bankruptcy statutes.

They also supported the judge's decision to accelerate proceedings.

"It seems to clear the way for closing within the time frame contemplated by our offer, should we win the relocation motion," Balsillie's spokesman, Richard Rodier, said.

"Really, that's what it depends on, and I think Judge Baum made a very good decision."

Judge Baum also set two tentative dates for the auction of the team, depending on how he rules on the relocation issue June 22 if a ruling is in favour of Balsillie and Sept. 10 if the NHL prevails.

If the NHL wins the relocation fight, then the league's owners would approve the sale of the team before the auction occurs.

Baum also has to factor in the city of Glendale, which contends the Coyotes cannot not break their lease to play in Jobing.com Arena without paying a significant penalty.

Daly also said that any sale to keep the team in Arizona would be contingent on reworking the lease agreement with the city.

Ken Hitchcock on Pat Quinn and Tom Renney

Columbus Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock thinks the Edmonton Oilers have a very solid combination with the hiring of Pat Quinn and Tom Renney.

Talking to the Edmonton Journal, Hitchcock knows both coaches very well and feels the young Oilers team will greatly benefit from the duo.

“The thing that I learned most from working with Pat is he creates this culture with his staff and his players that you don't want to let him down,” said Hitchcock.

“I believe that will come out in Edmonton.”

Hitchcock knows this first-hand from serving under Quinn as an assistant coach on the 2002 and 2006 Canadian Olympic teams, and the Canadian 2004 World Cup of Hockey team.

“He treats you so well, his coaches and his players. He treats the players with so much respect. He gives you lots of rope, and in some cases he gives you enough to hang yourself if you don't co-operate.”

Hitchcock then mentioned that Quinn “expects it back in spades” in regards to the players effort on the ice and the work of his staff.

Hitchcock had some memorable coaching battles against Quinn when he was behind the Philadelphia Flyers' bench and Quinn was the Toronto Maple Leafs' coach.

He views Quinn as "a big picture guy" who likes to delegate and has a history of defending his players to the hilt.

Hitchcock's history with Renney goes back almost two decades.

Hitchcock had a say in the hiring of Renney as his successor to coach the Kamloops Blazers (WHL) when Hitchcock left for the pros.

He feels Renney will definitely complement Quinn, feeling that he will focus more on the tactical and teaching aspects to go with Quinn’s uptempo puck-movement strategies.

“Tom is one of the best strategy guys in the league,” Hitchcock said.

"I think they'll be a great pair. He'll enhance Pat's program there."

Darryl Sutter Best Man For Flames' Coaching Position, For Now

Calgary Flames GM Darryl Sutter addressed the media today, following last week's firing of Mike Keenan, and announced that he was cleaning house.

The team will be heading in an entirely different direction next season.

Sutter announced that the contracts of assistant coaches Rich Preston, Rob Cookson, David Marcoux, and Jim Playfair would not be renewed when they expire on June 30th.

Playfair has been offered the head coaching position of the Flames' American Hockey League affiliate in Abbotsford.

"When you're in that top group (of teams) you want to get to the top of that group," said Sutter.

"We're talking about a very successful team, but we want more."

Sutter has been looking through a list of potential candidates to take the head coaching position with the Flames, but has met with with little success.

"Right now, I'm the best one," he said.

"All the best coaches in the league are under contract and I think there are three guys that are excellent and then I'm fourth."

Though many feel the role of both coach and GM is a dying breed in the post-lockout NHL, Sutter feels he could handle the situation if needed.

"I can separate the general manager and coach pretty easily if I'm surrounded by good people. If I find in the search that I'm the best candidate, then I am the coach, I can do that easy."

Sutter was clear that the Flames early playoff exit was only part of the reason for the changes, but that a number of areas need addressing.

Sutter stressed that improvement was needed on the team's defence. The Flames ranked 23rd in the regular season in terms of defence.

"I think it slipped a bit this year," said Sutter of Calgary's defensive play. "That's against what I believe in, and that's not what successful organizations do."

He hopes to have his coaching staff in place prior to the NHL Entry Draft on June 26th.

Regardless of who is standing behind the Flames' bench next season, Sutter knows the challenges ahead.

"I have high standards. We have high standards. And that's what matters," said Sutter.

"It is a position that takes a lot of time and energy. The head coaching position is the toughest position in the organization."

Sergei Fedorov To Join KHL Next Season

The KHL appears to be bringing one of their own home.

In a report by RDS, Russian sources indicated that veteran center Sergei Fedorov has signed with Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

The two-year deal will pay Fedorov, 39, $3.8 million per season.

In his 18-year career, Fedorov scored 483 goals (the most by a Russian-born player) and added 696 assists for 1,179 points in 1,248 games with Detroit, Anaheim, Columbus, and Washington.

His greatest successes came with the Detroit Red Wings, where he became the first European-trained player to win the Hart Trophy (MVP).

He also has two Frank Selke trophies (best defensive forward), one Lester Pearson award, and he played in six All-Star games.

Fedorov played three Stanley Cup winners with the Red Wings, and ranks fifth in team history in points, goals, and games played.

His greatest off-ice accomplishment was his alleged marriage and divorce to tennis star Anna Kournikova, which was denied by her representatives.

Mikael Johansson Signed by Canadiens, Alexei Yemelin on the Horizon?

The Montreal Canadiens have signed free-agent forward Mikael Johansson from the Swedish champion Farjestad (Karlstad).

Johansson, 23, has scored 95 points in 203 games in Swedish Elite League with Farjestad.

Johansson was originally drafted by Detroit in 2003 (ninth round).

The Canadiens reportedly signed Johansson to a one-year, two-way contract for $1.075 million.

This has been confirmed by Farjestad's director of sports, Thomas Rundqvist but not confirmed by the Canadiens.

Over the weekend, RDS cited Russian media reports that defenceman Alexei Yemelin (pictured) is negotiating with the Canadiens.

A Habs' third-round choice in 2004, Yemelin played with champion Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL this past season.

The 23-year old is a stay at home defenceman that has already developed a reputation as a tough, physical player.

He does not have a contract with the KHL for next season and has been highly touted ,as NHL-ready, for the last two seasons.

With the potential loss of Mike Komisarek to free agency on July 1, the Canadiens will be looking to fill the potential void left with the young Russian.

May 25th, 1989: Al MacInnis Leads Calgary Flames to Their Only Stanley Cup

This final would be a rematch from three years prior.

The Calgary Flames would square off again with the Montreal Canadiens for the Stanley Cup, looking to avenge their defeat in 1986.

It would be a meeting of the regular season’s top teams, the number one seeds from the formerly-named Campbell conference and Prince of Wales conference.

Montreal, led by rookie coach Pat Burns, had lost only three games in the three playoff series leading up to the final.

The Flames did not have as smooth a ride to the finals. Terry Crisp, in his second season as coach, and his team would battle Vancouver to seven games in the first round.

Flames fans will vividly recall Mike Vernon’s glove save off Stan Smyl, in overtime of game seven, which lead to Joel Otto’s winning goal.

The Flames would then crush Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings in a sweep, and take Chicago in five to get to the Cup final.

The series would be a defensive battle, with stellar goaltending coming from both Vernon and Montreal’s Patrick Roy. These longtime adversaries would split the first two games in Calgary, with the Flames winning game one 3-2 and Montreal taking the second game 4-2.

Moving to the hallowed Montreal Forum, Ryan Walter would score for the Canadiens at 18:08 of the second overtime, giving them a 4-3 game three win before the Flames won game four, 4-2.

The series returned to the Saddledome with the home team winning the fifth game 3-2.

Going back to the Habs' home turf, the Flames maintained a 3-2 advantage.

In the first period, Colin Patterson capitalized on a shot that was deflected off the Canadiens’ Chris Chelios, and snapped the puck past a surprised Roy at 18:51 of the first period.

Claude Lemieux responded for Montreal, at 1:23 of the second period, when his blast from just inside the blue line handcuffed Vernon and trickled over the goal line.

The Flames co-captain, Lanny MacDonald, scored his only goal of the playoffs in the second period at 4:24. Coming out of the penalty box and into a four man rush, MacDonald took a pass from Joe Nieuwendyk to beat Roy on the glove side.

Despite each allowing a soft goal, both goaltenders played at the All-Star level into the third period.

The turning point came for Calgary in the third period, when Russ Courtnall took a boarding after he ran Vernon over behind the net.

The Montreal bench rejected this penalty, arguing that Vernon was clearly away from his crease, and was therefore a fair and open target.

On the power-play, Doug Gilmour cashed his own rebound past a confused Roy, scoring at 11:02 in the third.

Pat Burns was seen clapping his hands after the goal, a sarcastic "thanks" to referee Denis Morel for his call against Courtnall.

Rick Green would respond for Montreal at 11:53 on a screen shot that clearly showed Lemieux interfere with Vernon.

An interesting event occurs at the 15:51 mark of the period.

With the Canadiens still trailing and on the attack, the Flames' Al MacInnis scoops the puck with his glove and stops the play in the Calgary end.

Being on the opposite side, referee Morel can’t see what occurred so no delay of game penalty is called. MacInnis carries his “trophy” to the Flames bench, during the stoppage in play, and flips it to a trainer.

With just over a minute to play in the third period, Gilmour would score on the empty net, securing the first ever Stanley Cup for the Calgary Flames.

Ironically, this moment was equally significant for Montreal. Up until this moment, the Canadiens had never lost a Cup clinching game at home in the entire history of their storied franchise.

Montreal fans gave a standing ovation for the Flames and remained in their seats to watch as the visiting team paraded the Stanley Cup around the Forum ice.

Though he didn’t score in the final game, MacInnis had five goals (two game winners) with his booming slapshot in the series.

His 31 points in the playoffs, including a 17-game point streak, would earn him the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

MacInnis became the first defenceman to lead the playoffs in scoring.

For Lanny MacDonald, it was an exclamation point on a Hall of Fame career.

Having capped his regular season career with an even 500 career goals and 1006 points, his final goal in the NHL was to have his name forever etched on the side of the Stanley Cup.

"I scored my first goal ever in the National Hockey League in the Montreal Forum. And I scored my last goal in my final game, again, in the Montreal Forum. I was part of the on-ice lineup for that winning game and we were the only team other than the Canadiens ever to win the Stanley Cup on Forum ice. All those things added up to me thinking, 'Boy, it's a sign! It's time I was outta here.' What a great way to go!

"To come back and eventually win the Cup playing for a team close to your hometown (Hanna, Alberta), wow! It doesn't get much better than that."

This Stanley Cup final would also mark the last time that two Canadian teams have faced off.

The complete game can be viewed here.

Does Goalie Jonas Gustavsson Have Sites Set On Avalanche?

The best goaltender in the world, outside of the NHL, may be looking to join the Colorado Avalanche.

Twenty-four year-old Jonas Gustavsson may have interest in the Avalanche, partly because Patrick Roy (one of his idols) is considering joining the team as a coach or in the front office.

It was reported earlier this month that Gustavsson has narrowed the list of NHL teams he’s considering to also include Dallas, Toronto, and San Jose.

The Denver Post reports that the Avalanche have confirmed interest in the goalie's services.

While he is an unrestricted free agent, Gustavsson would be subject to a maximum rookie salary for one year, currently set at $900,000.

It would be likely that his first contract will be for one season, because after he turns 25 he would not be subject to entry-level salary by-laws.

Unlike traditional unrestricted free agents, Gustavsson can sign with the team he chooses at any time, rather than needing to wait for the July 1st start of free agency.

"I think Colorado would be a great fit. It's a great city to play hockey in, even if they had a rough season," former Av's star Peter Forsberg told Swedish reporters.

"I think it would be less pressure for him there than Toronto or Philadelphia&searchTerm=Philadelphia">Philadelphia or New York."

Gustavsson's mother is reportedly ill, which could delay any meetings planned between him and the Avalanche, or any other suiting team.

He led Farjestad to the championship of the Swedish Elite League this year, posting a 1.96 goals-against average and .932 save percentage.

In this year's World Ice Hockey Championships, he earned a bronze medal with the Swedish team.

Calgary Flames Burn Off Mike Keenan

The Calgary Flames have fired head coach Mike Keenan.

Keenan became the Flames' coach on June 14th, 2007. In their two seasons under Keenan the Flames went 88-60-16 and twice made the playoffs, but were eliminated in the first round both times.

"Our team did not meet expectations,” Flames GM Darryl Sutter said in a statement.

“Following detailed evaluation over the past three weeks, and taking into consideration all factors affecting our season ending result, we believe this is a necessary change required to allow our team to continue toward our objective of winning the Stanley Cup."

"The Calgary Flames organization appreciates and respects Mike for accepting the opportunity to come to Calgary and are thankful for his efforts over the past two years," Sutter added.

Calgary was the 59-year-old Keenan's eighth stop as an NHL coach.

Keenan has a career coaching record of 672-567-147 and has won one Stanley Cup, with the New York Rangers in 1994.

He reached the finals on three other occasions, without a victory, twice with Philadelphia and once with Chicago.

The Flames have scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon.

Other members of the team's coaching staff remain the subject of further review and evaluation.
