John Madden Comments on Mark Sanchez's Hot Dog

John Madden was quick to release a statement about the sideline happenings at the Jets vs. Raiders game, where Mark Sanchez was seen eating a hot dog on camera.

Madden was asked to break what happen down for us.

"Well see here, it goes totally according to plan until the end. He had everything working right, the mustard and ketchup were all over, and the bun just kept the hot dog from getting anywhere until it was all gone. He just could not keep it protected. You know you spend all this time in practice working on protection, and he lets the camera zoom right in there unblocked. That cannot happen and is a result of lack of focus."

Thanks Madden!

Rex Ryan Responds To Sideline Hot Dog

Rex Ryan was not pleased about Sanchez’s hot dog eating on the sideline and he let it be known following practice. When asked about the incident by a reporter, the following dialogue took place.

Ryan: “At first I was so frustrated. I asked him where he got the dog and he would not respond to me.”

Reporter:” You are winning the game at this point, what was going through your mind when he would not respond.”

Ryan: “A mix of emotions, hunger.”

Reporter: “Hunger? Anyway is everything okay now?”

Ryan: “Yes, You know I had a few hot dogs right after the game myself. I just wanted a bite so bad and damn before I got over to him he had finished the damn thing. I calmed down because I knew I would get a couple after the game. It was only a moment when I got real angry. At that point I had not had a hot dog since half time. However, we all know this cannot happen again.”

Reporter: “What will you do to make sure this does not become a distraction again?”

Ryan: “I pulled Mark aside and I said, you really have to realize your surroundings before you do things you do not want others to see. However, I told him I see everything. Next time, just be smart about it and get me one too.”

Mark Sanchez Signs with Nathan's Hot Dogs

Nathan's Hot Dogs...Sanchez Approved!

The CEO of the Nathan's Hot Dog company is set to introduce Sanchez Tuesday morning as there spokesperson for the 2010 year. "We saw an opportunity here with a young quarterback who is having a very successful year. It will put our product out there in a way it has not been yet," the CEO said.

Put it out there it sure will. Not only do they plan on producing three commercials, any game where Sanchez is replaced by a back up due to a Jets fourth quarter league, he will sport a Nathans hot dog in his hand.

"I have done it for years; it will not be any different. I just got "caught" last game against the Raiders because me eating a hotdog was more interesting than the game," said Sanchez.

When asked about his apology he continued, “Obviously you got me wrong. Coach made it clear he was not happy with not getting one. I said that will never happen again.”

The NFL has yet to release a statement about this, however Nathans is prepared to pay any fines handed down.

N.Y. Giants' Moss Hanging By a Thread

The wide receiver position has been one of much discussion among football analysts and Giants fans alike since Plaxico Burress’s self-inflicted gun wound hit the news. It seems like every possible solution to the situation has been discussed, and now that the release of Burress has been made, every potential replacement has been thoroughly analyzed by someone on television, newspaper, or the internet.

But enough about "Plax" and whoever is brought in to try and fill his shoes. Let's look at a guy who the Giants do have on their roster at the wide receiver spot: Sinorice Moss.

I bring up Moss because, out of all the receivers the Giants currently have, he is the least likely to benefit from the Giants parting ways with the man who I will not mention again in this article.

Moss was a second-round draft pick (44th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft, and if that was a statistic, it would be the most impressive one of his career. It seems like this guy has more injuries than catches during his time in the NFL, and he could be looking for work very soon.

Sinorice has talent and the potential to be a contributor on the Giants. But he's going to have to fight it out with the likes of Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, and David Tyree.

And with it likely that the Giants will add a receiver or two via trade and the Draft, Moss’s roster spot may be looking like a dead limb needing trimming for another to grow.

Moss has played in 29 games and has 38 receptions for 403 yards over the course of his career. Out of those 38 catches, only two have been touchdowns.

After N.Y. neglected to re-sign Amani Toomer, it looks like GM Jerry Reese wants to renovate the wideout corps. And such a renovation would require cleaning out the broken parts, keeping what works, and bringing in the new.

Is Moss a working part? He needs to impress in training camp and the preseason to make himself a part of the team come September.

Rutgers Future Points Up With Quarterback Tom Savage

“He is certainly a great…great quarterback to have coming here to Rutgers”, said Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano.

His remarks were referring to perhaps the best recruit the Rutgers football team has landed in the history of the program, Tom Savage. Savage, the four-star recruit, played high school ball for Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, Pennsylvania. He will be asked to fill the void left by graduating Scarlet Knight quarterback Mike Teel.

When comparing Teel and Savage, you can start to be excited for what is in store for Rutgers Football. Teel, whose greatest accomplishment was leading the team to an 11-2 record during his sophomore season, was redshirted upon arriving to Rutgers. While this could be the case, it appears as if Schiano plans on keeping Savage on the roster his true-freshman year. Schiano’s comments on Savage show how excited he is to coach him.

Schiano was very high on Mike Teel, and he has reason to be even higher on Savage.

Savage’s 40-yard dash time is listed as 4.76 seconds. When Teel entered his time was listed at 4.81 seconds. Savage’s GPA is listed at 3.4 on rivals.com, while Teel’s was 3.0. Both are 6’4”, however, Savage weighs 217 pounds, nine pounds heavier then Teel did his senior year of high school. Savage, of course is ranked as one of the top-10 quarterbacks in his recruiting class. Teel could only have dreamed he was.

The quarterback position is wide open for the 2009 season at Rutgers and Tom Savage may pass and run his way into the starting position when given the chance.

Savage has only one thing that may keep him from being starter in 2009 and could result in the redshirt. He was unable to graduate high school early to make it to Rutgers spring practices. Had he been able to get out of high school and get acquainted with the team, he may have been slotted in at starting quarterback for the opening game.

Regardless of whether he starts, is a back up, or is red shirted, it is clear he is the future face of Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have a player who could set out and accomplish a great deal for this program. This kid has the skill set to be great, just take a look at the tapes.

He also has a great attitude towards the Rutgers program. When asked about the stadium construction or Schiano’s contract effecting his commitment, he said, "I'm committed to the program. Not a stadium plan or a coach."

Savage could give the Scarlet Knight fans something to hope for, a Big East Championship, an Orange Bowl, and maybe a National Championship.

Get to know this guy:

Tom Savage Practice

Tom Savage Interview

The Reason For The New York Mets Lack Of Success Is Uncovered!

The recent, okay lets not kid ourselves, and past misfortunes the New York Mets have really left Mets fans scratching their heads. “Why our team?” they ask. How can the Mets keep fielding a solid team yet find ways to miss the playoffs, even if seems like they have locked the division up?

Alright, so maybe the Mets have enjoyed some good times in their history. The 1969 and 1986 World Series Championships, four Pennants, and five Division Titles show it has not been all bad for the New York Mets.

However, they have always seemed to play under the large shadow of the greatest baseball team in the history of mankind, the New York Yankees.

The success the Yankees have had is hard to ever look away from. However, even when the Yankees did not get into the playoffs last year, it seems like the Mets cannot capitalize on that and show they are better. The Mets just cannot get out of that shadow. Why is this?

Well, the reason may surprise you. It has not been poor General Managers and coaches. It can not be blamed on the players. It is indeed a decision that was made in 1880 that will forever hold the Mets under the shadow of the other local team.

In 1880, the New York Metropolitans were founded by John Day. While this team did not turn into the Mets, when the ball club was founded in 1960, they took the name of the previous team.

That’s right folks. The biggest mistake the New York Mets franchise ever made was picking their name. They should have figured this out by the fact the original team did not pan out.

However, through some research, I have found out that it is indeed the name that has brought the Mets down and put them under the shadow of the New York Yankees.

In 1974, the Cuban Nation Series welcomed the expansion baseball team, The Metropolitanos of Havana. Since their introduction to the league, they have won no championships and have finished third or worst in their division of four from 2000-2007.

They started, like the Mets, in the shadow of another team based in their own city.

The Industriales are the team in Havana, just like the Yankees are the team in New York. The Mets come second in their respective cities in both success and fan base…in both leagues.

So, now we can close the books on why the Mets are not and will never be as successful as the New York Yankees.

It’s all in the name.

Results of Plaxico Burress's Trial Are Out: The Worst News Possible?

The Giants heard about the worst news they could have heard today regarding their wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

After 16 minutes inside the court, Burress left without a plea deal.

However, he did not leave after pleading not guilty. Burress’s attorney asked for the 31-year-old star to have more time to work with authorities to work out a plea deal that they could agree to.

According to ESPN’s reporter Sal Paolantonio, the negotiations between Burress and the Manhattan DA are at a standstill. Burress is attempting to avoid jail time so he can be re-instated and eligible to play for the 2009 season.

However, Paolatonio reports that the DA’s goal is to see Burress serve at least some jail time that would keep him from playing in 2009.

Paolatonio also said, “There is going to be a plea agreement,” as Burress does not want a trial.

The question is, when will there be an agreement?

Now, the Giants have to wait once again. March 31 seemed to be a day of hope for the Giants organization, as a day to that would give them a better idea as to whether or not Burress would be lining up at wide out this season.

The DA agreed to the extra time and the case has been adjourned until June 15.

For the Giants, this poses more issues. Burress will again be in court almost two months after the NFL Draft.

This delay is even worse than knowing Burress would not be around in 2009. The Giants will now go into the draft and through the rest of free agency with no clue as to what will happen with their No. 1 wide receiver.

It seems that this adjournment may be the end of Burress’s time in New York. It seems likely that the Giants may move on from Burress, assuming that he will do at least a year of jail time.

If he comes back, he could be promptly traded for picks in the 2010 draft, or be part of a deal for another receiver.

While the Giants and Reese seem to have backed Burress, they also seemed to have been expecting answers today.

Since there was no answers, this could change the likelihood of bringing Plaxico back.

What Is The Most Unbreakable Record In Sports?

Martin Brodeur recently broke the all-time win record for an NHL goalie, sparking much debate on whether or not that mark will ever be reached again.

At first thought, Brodeur’s record could be the most unbreakable record in the NHL. At second thought, by the end of Brodeur’s career, it could seem to be the most unbreakable record in sports.

However, Brodeur’s record is not the most unbreakable record in sports, not yet at least. So what is?

The most unbreakable record in sports is held by Brett Favre. However, it is not his touchdowns that will forever be untouched. It is the 310 interceptions he amassed over his 18 NFL seasons that will never be touched.

First, looking back through history, there are no quarterbacks that really come to close to Favre. George Blanda threw 277 interceptions during his career and is second on the list. That is 33 interceptions that separate worst from second worse.

Second, Favre threw 3.3 interceptions every 100 passes during his career. Here is some numbers from some current starters and notable retired quarterbacks; Tom Brady-2.4, Peyton Manning-2.8, Steve Young-2.6, Dan Marino-3, Joe Montana-2.6, Troy Aikman-3.0.

This may not seem like a large difference, however after 5,000 passes it is. Not many quarterbacks are going to have a starting job for more than 10 seasons if they start throwing interceptions at the rate Favre has.

Favre was able to accomplish this feat by also throwing for the most touchdowns in NFL history. Also, he won games. Favre was able to stay healthy throughout his career and play 16 complete seasons.

No quarterback will ever be able to put more than 310 interceptions in a career because he has to stay healthy and play at least 16 complete seasons. He has to keep his starting job while throwing a large amount of interceptions.

So basically, unless the NFL sees an amazing athlete who can stay healthy and play great, while at the same time make plenty of poor decisions, the 310 will never be reached.

Giants Draft Predictions: Who's in Blue in 2009

It seems obvious to me that the Giants have made little effort to sign or trade for a wide receiver because they're waiting for March 31, 2009 to roll around. It's a day that N.Y. fans know all too well as Plaxico Burress’s court date.

However, Burress’s fate has not stopped Jerry Reese from adding numerous defensive players this off season. In fact, these additions have the Giants faced with a new problem.

OK, so it's not really a "problem," but a decision. Though they have 10 picks in the 2009 draft, the Giants most likely cannot afford 10 more contracts (and definitely cannot fit 10 new players on their squad). There has been talk of the Giants acquiring Braylon Edwards from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for picks, but nothing has been proposed.

As in the past few years, it seems that Reese’s intentions are to build through the draft. In order for the logistics to work out, it seems the team will need to trade up once or twice in this draft to lower their total number of picks and increase the number of players they have to choose from.

Here's how I see it playing out:

Round 1, Pick 20 (via trade with Lions): Rutgers WR Kenny Britt

The trade would look something like this: the Giants acquire the 20th overall pick while the Lions acquire the 45th overall, 60th overall, 200th overall, and WR Sinorice Moss.

There are reports that Detroit is looking to trade this pick, and while they may not need Moss, they'd get three picks instead of one and a former second-round receiver looking to prove himself.

Meanwhile, the swap would lower the total picks the Giants have to eight yet preserve their original first rounder. They'd also make roster space by trading Moss.

The move up would allow N.Y. to select Britt after the Bears elect not to pick him with 18th selection. Yes, Kenny is scheduled to work out for the Bears, but so are other receivers.

Though he's 6'3", 210 pounds, Britt ran the 40 in 4.40 seconds at the Rutgers Pro Day, which shows improvement on his NFL Combine time. He has the size and height to be molded into a Plaxico Burress-type player.

So if Plaxico does not come back for the 2009 season, Britt will be a great addition to the receiving corps. If Burress does return, teams can just try to stop Burress, Smith, Britt, Hixon, and the rest of this corps. This pick makes so much sense for the Giants, but it appears that they will not be able to wait for the 29th pick to get the wideout.

Of course, if it looks as if Britt will slide to 29, the Giants will wait it out. This guy could be a future Hall of Famer; you heard it here first!

Round 1, Pick 29: UConn OT William Beatty

The Giants will select this offensive tackle who started all 13 games his senior year after missing the previous campaign. He pushed the 225 a staggering 27 times at the combine.

The Giants' offensive line was amazing last year, as they blocked for two 1,000-yard rushers and the team took the number one ranking in rushing yards. But New York needs depth, as Kevin Boothe was very inconsistent in his backup role.

The Giants could look for a linebacker here, but they signed Boley this offseason. Besides, at 29, all the first-round linebackers will most likely be chosen already.

Round 3, Pick 91: Oregon State CB Keenan Lewis

The Giants need another corner to add depth and to eventually mold into their third corner on the depth chart. They terminated the contract of Sam Madison which makes the position one of need.

According to reports, Lewis can play safety as well, and that makes him an even better pick. He could add depth to either position, depending on what the Giants need when training camp comes along.

His 40 time is just under 4.50 seconds, which is not blazing, but scouts say he makes up for his lack of raw speed with quick decision making and great instincts.

Round 3, Pick 100 (compensatory): San Jose State CB Christopher Owens

This guy ran a 4.40 at his pro day, and if he is available here, the Giants can be forgiven picking two cornerbacks within ten slots of each other.

The reason is that CBs currently on the roster Aaron Ross and Corey Webster are still a bit unproven. Both play well at times, but if the Giants can add some legit depth behind them, it may make for a better training camp as all the cornerbacks try to prove they are starters.

This also makes a good pick if the Giants indeed choose Lewis and opt to use him as a safety.

Round 4, Pick 115 (via trade with Jets): Pittsburgh MLB Scott McKillop

The trade would look something like this: the Giants acquire 115th overall pick while the Jets acquire the 129th and 151st picks. This would allow the G-Men to trim their count to seven picks and snag a future starting linebacker.

Of course, McKillop may not be available here, as he performed well at the combine, but some still have him around the middle of the fourth.

Reading through the negatives posted on draft projection sites, it seems his physical strength may be in question. I say give him a weight room and a New York Giants strength coach, and he will build.

It seems he has trouble shedding blocks, and some scouts also worry about him bringing down NFL backs. These issues could easily be addressed by adding some strength during the offseason.

Now remember that he'll be learning from one of the best middle linebackers in the game, Antonio Pierce. If Pierce can teach him how to be a "quarterback of the defense" as Antonio is now, McKillop could be one of the best in two or three years.

Round 5, Pick 164: Rutgers WR Tiquan Underwood

Alright, so only two scouts from the Giants attended the Rutgers Pro Day, but they noticed more than Kenny Britt. They realized that Underwood would be a steal in the fifth round, where he fell on most boards due to his poor performance during Rutgers' 1-5 start.

They also realized how Mike Teel’s performance hindered him in college. With a little observation at the pro day, it was quite obvious the Scarlet Knight QB was off the mark: His throws were everywhere from overthrown to underthrown to (occasionally) on target.

But Underwood was quite on the mark when watching the ball into his hands and turning quickly after catching. Plus, he's fast: He ran a 4.41 at the Combine. While he only measures in at 6'1", when watching him play, he reminds me of a young Amani Toomer. It would be interesting to see the two receivers make it on the same NFL team and battle it out for playing time.

This pick would also be additional insurance in the case of Burress not being able to return.

Round 7, Pick 238: Florida State K/P Graham Gano

The Giants should pick a kicker in the seventh round for two reasons.

One is that you can actually get a very good kicker in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. The second is that Lawrence Tynes played very little last year, and Jeff Feagles is nearing the end of his career.

Gano can perform both kicking and punting duties. And while the Giants may have been planning to only have two legs on their roster this season, the smart decision may be to have three again.

Gano could have a long career in the NFL, and the whole thing could be in Giants blue. He made five out of seven field goals of 50 yards or longer and was perfect from 49 yards in, leaving him 24-of-26 on the season last year.

While he may not beat Feagles for the punting job, it could be his when the 43-year-old retires. Gano averaged 42.7 yards per punt last year and 43.3 in 2007.

The Game Is Starting, Grab Me A...

There is nothing like a fresh cold beer while watching your favorite team play. Whether it is the first quarter, second half, or final period, it is always nice to either cope with the pain of a penalty or celebrate a score behind a tasty beverage.

I write this article because I turn 21 on February 26 and I would like to hear the opinions of sports fans on this topic.

While I will not say that I have not found my favorite beverage to drink during a game, I do find myself sipping cola more often then I would like!

Now that I can enjoy the game with a beer, I wondered, what is the best drink to have come game time? Whether it is domestic or imported, most people have a favorite beer. What is yours?

Also, I want to say that some of the worst fans are those who get wasted at sporting events.

If you are a true fan, you would like to see how they do. “What a game, I was so trashed” is not as nice of a memory as, “Did you see that last play when it was all on the line and they delivered!

You can drink and feel a buzz while enjoying a game. If you need to get so drunk you make a scene in order to enjoy it, stay home, or better yet, get help.

For those who know how to drink responsibly and enjoy the game, cheers to you!

Thanks for reading and your comments.

See how your beer ranks at http://beeradvocate.com/

Labeling the NFL's "Most Disappointing" of 2008 (Part Two)

Welcome back for the second part of the NFL’s most disappointing in the 2008 season. Last time in Part One, we looked at the most disappointing event, team, and quarterback. Now let us glance at some more offensive players and delve in to the running back, wide receiver and offensive line categories.

Running Back

Marion Barber disappointed the most out of the back field and here is why. Last year Barber competed for carries with Julius Jones and this year he was not on the team. A significant more carries seemed to be heading his way in 2008.

While it was not that significant, Barber did get 34 more carries to prove himself as an elite back in the NFL. What did he do with those extra carries? Mr. Barber put up fewer yards and scored fewer touchdowns.

In 2007 Barber had 10 touchdowns and 975 yards leading the team with 4.8 yards a carry. Poised to have a huge year, he dropped his totals to 7 touchdown and 885 yards. His 3.7 yards a carry in 2008 were shadowed by both Felix Jones’s 8.9 and Tashard Choice’s 5.1.

Choice and Jones were rookies in 2008 and had more success on the ground when given the opportunity. You can argue that they had better situations to run in and that they did not take the bulk of the carries and were rested, but there is no excuse here. There is no excuse for his seven fumbles that resulted in three turnovers in 2008.

He only fumbled three times in 2007 and lost none. Marion Barber showed in 2008 he cannot handle the ball more than 205 times a season and have as good of a year he had in 2007. Good thing for him, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice are there for support in 2009.

Wide Receiver

I really was not going to think about this one and just say Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson. However, I am glad I did because I have a new guy; Torry Holt. Alright, why was his performance more disappointing then Chad Johnson’s? I mean after all, Holt put a more respectable season together than Johnson did.

Johnson only caught 53 balls for 540 yards after coming off a career high 1,440 yard year in 2007. Torry Holt put up 796 yards from his 64 receptions. The reason Holt gets labeled the most disappointing receiver of 2008 is the fact that for the first time since 1999 he did not post a 1,000 yard season.

2001 was the last time he caught less than 90 balls prior to 2008. While he may not have had as huge of gap between his stats from last year to this year than Johnson, he played in every game in 2007. Johnson only played in 13 games.

Another three games, the stats would have been up there around Holt’s. Holt had two more consecutive 1,000 yard seasons then Johnson going into this year. Holt was also riding into 2007 with a 90 or more catch performance in each of the past six seasons whereas Johnson was only riding a one year streak.

It is also more disappointing because Torry Holt, unlike Johnson, has represented his team with pride and kept his complaints to a minimum. It is worse seeing a guy who represents good in the NFL world suffer through a down year towards the end of his career.

Believe it or not, Johnson needed a little bit worse of a year than 2007 to get this label.

Offensive Line

The New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars are the two offensive lines that come to my mind. The Patriots only allowed 21 sacks on Brady last year, yet forgot to protect the quarterback this year.

Maybe they did not realize they had a quarterback after Brady got injured since Matt Cassel was sacked 47 times in 2008. They line gave up a total of 48 sacks on the year, more than double what they did last year.

However, with a sixth ranked rushing attack in 2008 up from 13th in 2007, they avoid being the biggest disappointment. Jordan, Fault, and Morris all had an average yard per carry of at least 4.5. That is some good run blocking.

Sorry Jacksonville, but your offensive line disappointed the most in 2008. In 2007, they gave up 31 sacks which was not too great, however Fred Taylor rushed for 1,202 yards and combined with Jones-Drew, they made up the second best running game. 2008 was worse in both areas for the Jaguars.

Garrard was sacked 41 times and their running game dropped to 18th in 2008. Also, they went 5-11 a year after making the playoffs, and while the defense had a part to play in it as well, better offensive line play would have helped as well.

Thank You For Reading! Please Comment. Look for the next article to include kicker, coach, and draft choice.

New York Giants: The Replacement

It seems like everyone likes to play the position of New York Giants General Manager lately, including myself. It also seems like everyone believes the Giants need to address the possible loss of star wide out Plaxico Burress. Names I have heard thrown around all seem to make some sense, but when it comes down to it, none of them have the height of Plaxico Burress.

However, I think that the answer could be found at another position. A 6’ 5”, 251 pound ten time Pro Bowl tight end would be at the top of my list of targets if I were Jerry Reese.

Tony Gonzalez wants a ring and he already has shown interest in the Giants organization mid way through last season. The Giants may have the tool to get him that ring. Gonzalez recently stated he is very open to returning to the Chiefs if they seem to be going in the right direction during free-agency (from: http://www.kansascity.com/sports/chiefs/story/1024524.html).

While he says he does not want a trade he made it clear he only wants to play one or two more seasons. If he feels the Chiefs are not contenders this year, he will most likely want to part ways with the club from Kansas City.

The Giants would benefit from making this acquisition for three reasons. Gonzalez is a respected player and a proven leader, a gap that may be left if the Giants do indeed part ways with Amani Toomer. The Giants would add a large target for Manning, who he could utilize like Jeremy Shockey. Last but not least, Kevin Boss can learn many skills from Gonzalez. This is a great fit for the Giants who have a decent tight end in Boss who can take over once again after Tony Gonzalez retires.

The Giants could then focus obtaining another wide receiver from the NFL Draft. I like Kenny Britt from Rutgers in the second round as I wrote late last year in this article: Britt

Need more persuasion? The last two seasons he has had over 90 receptions and reached 1,000 yards. He scored 10 touchdowns this past season and five the previous year. He does not show signs of slowing up. He has had over 70 receptions the past five years and over 50 receptions in every year after his rookie season.

Just a thought to ponder, Mr. Reese.

As always, thank you for reading and your comments and thoughts are appreciated!

Hey Giants Fans: Check this article out if you have not already…WHO IS LT?

Labeling the NFL's "Most Disappointing" of 2008 (Part One)

"NFL, That's my league, man. That's not fair!" Easy TO, easy. You are not on this list or your team. At least not in this part.

Alright, so now that the season is officially over, let us congratulate the Pittsburgh Steelers on their sixth Super Bowl!

Okay, for all of us who are not Steelers fans and even those of us who are, let us look back on those who disappointed the NFL world in 2008!

The Most Disappointing Team: New York Jets

While the Lions may seem to be the obvious choice, it was clear from the beginning they did not have what it took to win a game.

The Jets on the other hand made a huge move this past offseason to acquire future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre and at one point this season, they looked as if they may have been running all the way to the Super Bowl.

They were 8-3 going into Week 13 riding a five game win streak. With five games left, they faced three teams that finished the season with losing records. With the division almost locked up, it seems they mixed their pregame tapes up with the New York Mets tapes. They nosed dived and lost four of their remaining games.

The reason the Jets get this label is the fact they had a good team. They had a shot to win if they got in the playoffs. However, they fell completely apart before they got there.

Honorable mention has to go to the Cowboys. Oops, sorry Terrell I lied. They were many peoples pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. You have to make the playoffs first. They do not receive this label since they played without Tony Romo for a few weeks this year and they were not the same team without him.

The Most Disappointing Event: Tom Brady’s Injury.

Obviously, we cannot blame him for his lack of success as an injury in Week One kept him from taking anymore snaps all year. However, after having one of the best seasons a quarterback has ever had (50 TDs and a 117.2 passer rating) many people expected at least a decent season in 2008 for Brady.

Whether a fan of the Patriots or not, everyone who enjoys great football players has to appreciate Tom Brady. He showed for years that he did not need a No. 1 wideout to win games and championships. Though one win shy of a perfect season and a Super Bowl last year, Brady demonstrated what he could do with one of the best receivers in the league.

It was a loss not only to the Patriots, but to fans who truly love the sport. These things happen and teams must move on. The Patriots still had a solid 11-5 season without Brady; however, the loss of Brady surely took a few plays of the highlight reels.

Honorable mention for most disappointing event goes to Brady's team not making the playoffs. The Patriots posted a 11-5 record and saw a team with less wins play on Wild Card weekend while they were at home. This should not happen.

The Most Disappointing Quarterback: Matt Hasselbeck

Now, this is a tough one since Derek Anderson made a case for himself to get this label. With 3,787 yard in his first full season as starting quarterback, Derek looked as if he could have been on the verge of becoming one of the league’s better gunslingers. However he posted only 1,616 yards this year in the ten games he started.

Hasselbeck edges him out for the fact that he has been one of the better quarterbacks in the league for awhile now. Since 2002, Hasselbeck has not had a season that he amassed more interceptions than touchdowns until 2008.

In five out of the last six years prior to 2008 he has obtained at least 3,000 yards passing, a passer rating of above 80, and ten or more touchdowns.

In 2007 he posted a 91.4 passer rating, 28 TDs, and 12 INTs in 2007. In 2008, an injury cut his season to only seven games. In those seven games his 57.8 passer rating, 5 TDs, and 10 INTs left the Seahawks reminiscing about better days.

Thank you for reading and check out part two, which will include running back, wide receiver, and offensive line. Scheduled release: February 14. (No promises)

Who Is L.T.?

I have a little problem in the NFL world. Now, I completely understand this is not important and do not waste time saying nicknames do not matter. I know this.

There has been for eight years nickname that has sent chills down my spine. I cannot stand it. Just today, I searched LT on GOOGLE and the first site to pop up was NFL’s profile for LaDainian Tomlinson. Now, I have an issue.

L.T. is and will remain the nickname of Giant great Lawrence Taylor. Another note, I do not want to hear how Mr. Taylor was a cocaine addict and sent prostitutes to other team’s hotels. Again, I know this. However, what he did on the field is amazing and no one can argue with that.

Two Super Bowl rings,10 Pro Bowls, three AP Defensive Player of the Year awards, and 142 (132.5 officially) career sacks speak for themselves.

I quote John Madden, “Lawrence Taylor, defensively, has had as big an impact as any player I've ever seen. He changed the way defense is played, the way pass-rushing is played, the way linebackers play and the way offenses block linebackers.”

Now, LaDainian Tomlinson is an outstanding running back. I have nothing against the man. However, how can you just throw that LT out there and expect everyone knows whom you are talking about. It is not fair for Lawrence Taylor and the career he had to just give his nickname to someone else.

LaDainian Tomlinson has not revolutionized the running back position. He has played it well, but defenses have not had to completely change playbooks because Tomlinson changed how running backs play the game. Taylor changed the linebacker position.

The first person I think of when I hear LT is Lawrence Taylor. This should be true for any Giants fan and any NFL fan for that matter. The sad truth is that it is not. When L.T. is said, 99 percent of people are thinking of a running back for the San Diego Chargers.

Seriously, give both players their respect. They both deserve it. There is no reason to “share” the name L.T. Call him Dos Uno or Waco (the town in Texas where he played High School ball). Okay, not great options, but be creative. Stop with this L.T.

Thank You.

Surgery Needed on a Toomer Growing in The New York Giant Locker Room

According to NorthJersey.com, New York Giants WR and Captain Amani Toomer has spoken about his free agent status. The player that many have always respected for his loyalty to the Giants, great play, and few complaining words, may have just turned himself into the new Tiki Barber.

After 13 seasons with the Giants, he feels he will not return to the team. Money, however, does not seem to be an issue here. The Giants have also made no indication that they do not intend to keep their longest team active player on their roster.

Amani Toomer seems to have joined the not so new Typical Wide Receiver Club. Toomer believes that the Giants downfall towards the end of the 2008-2009 season have links to the team not utilizing him.

The Giants can cut you out like the tumor, you are becoming in a heart beat. They did it to Tiki Barber and they will do it to you.

This is personal, Toomer. I beg you not to make this mistake and keep your words to yourself. I respected you more than any other wide receiver in the league because you did not pull stunts like this. However, you are about to erase everything you ever did in the minds of Giants fans if this story is true and you stick to it.

Amani Toomer, one player does not win or lose a game. To say that the teams current situation is "GREATLY" due to the team not going to you as much, is shameful on your part. You are not Peyton Manning, you are not Tom Brady. You are a second string wide receiver. Your presence is an asset, not a necessity. Your leadership in the locker room may not be replaced soon, but you certainly can be.

You are looked up to by every Giants fan, but so was Tiki Barber. Barber gave hope for a Super Bowl and was the Giants best running back to date. However, finding a Giants fan who remembers him for anything but the negative comments he made about the team is rare.

Do not make the same mistake. This organization and your efforts allowed you to have a great career. Do not forget who gave you a chance and the team that never let you go despite a rocky start to your career. The team that stuck with you even after the acquisition of Plaxico Burress and numerous draftees.

It is up to you Amani Toomer. You have only a few years left in your career. You can go down as one of the most loved players in Giants History by staying put and closing your mouth. Or you can complain and end up booed every time a highlight of you is showed in Giants Stadium/New Meadowlands.

What is it going to be Mr. Toomer?

When Is Winning Bad For A Sport?

I understand that with free agency, drafts, salary caps, etc. that this probably would never occur, but have you wonder what would happen if a single team dominated a sports league for ten, fifteen or more years?

The Montreal Canadians won five Stanley Cups in a row, the New York Yankees won five World Series in a row, and the Green Bay Packers have won three NFL championships in a row (they did this feat twice, however they were not Super Bowls).

The Boston Celtics won eight straight NBA championships, which is the record out of the four top sport leagues in the United States.

However, at what point would enough be enough. When would the majority of fans give up watching a sport if a single team won every year? How long would it take you to grow sick of it?

A dominant team is usually good for a league. Many people tuned in to last years Super Bowl just to see if the Patriots could get perfection in a single season. Dominance seems to draw a crowd of people to follow a particular team to either see them win or watch them lose to an underdog.

However, could complete dominance ever be a good thing for a sport? While many loyal fans do not grow tired of rooting on their team who has not made the playoffs in years, I do not see them sticking to a sport that has the same result every year. How about the fans of a completely dominant team? Would they eventually get sick of the lack of competition? Is that not what sports is all about; competition?

The league may step in and set new rules to even out competition. The NHL did this when the Devils and other teams executed the trap defense so well that they made the sport “boring” in the eyes of the league desperate to attract new fans. However, would a league take action against a team that won every championship for ten years?

Bottom Line: You are the commissioner of, lets say the NFL, and lets say the Detroit Lions just went on a 15 straight Super Bowl Championship run, with five perfect seasons. The TV ratings are beginning to fall and profits are not as high. What is your solution?

New Jersey Devils: Thoughts on An Alternate Jersey

First off, I want to say that I found this awesome website that everyone should check out if you have not already: http://nhllogos.blogspot.com/. This site has individuals who post concept logos, jersey, goalie helmets, etc for all the teams in the NHL. Many of the pictures in here are from that site and I take no credit for any image used in this slideshow. Anyway, as a New Jersey Devils fan, I have wonder why the team has not added a fierce alternate jersey to wear on occasion. Do not get me wrong here and think that I do not like the teams current jerseys, but I know I am not the only fan who feels a third jersey would be a great addition for the team. I want to make it clear that I understand that it does not matter what a team wears that determines their play. I also realize that teams add these for marketing purposes and to make more money on jersey sales, hence the switch from colored jerseys from away to home in 2003. I have read through some blogs and have scene very negative comments on the introduction of alternate jerseys because they feel the teams are trying to make money of the fans. I have to laugh at this because all a franchise wants to do is make money of fans. I hate to break it to you but all sports are just businesses. If they make money, they are successful. The point is that if you are going to shoot down the introduction of alternate jerseys, use another reason. Anyway, I gathered a few concepts from the web for alternated jerseys for the New Jersey Devils and I was wondering how other fans felt about it. Which jersey do you like the most?

Again: I take no credit for the pictures within this slideshow.
Begin Slideshow

Giant Predictions for Eli Manning: Conspiracy Theory for 2009 Offseason

David Carr will be starting quarterback for Giants. Why? The Giants went on an amazing run last year to win the Super Bowl and Eli Manning won MVP. New York Daily News reports that Eli may be offered a huge contract to remain in New York since his contract is set to expire after next season.

The Giants have more dire things on their hands this year. Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward have contracts that expire now. The best rushing team in the NFL is facing the possibility of being broken up. Eli Manning will demand a large amount of money to remain in New York next year.

The Giants need to decide if he is worth it. It would safer to secure the running game that won them 12 games this year and would have won them a playoff game if given a chance. Yes, Eli won the MVP of Super Bowl XLII, but he did not deserve it.

David Tyree made the miraculous catch on a “hail marry” pass, as well as catching a touchdown pass, which should have earned him the award. Also, Manning’s play has been decent, but not better than the top quarterbacks in the game. He still has awful games and his accuracy is questionable.

Without Plaxico Burress, the Giants passing game was not the same. Adding him to the mix against the Eagles would have given them a sure trip to the NFC Championship game. Burress size and ability makes Eli’s accuracy less of a concern and his flaws less noticeable. Securing Eli does not mean securing success. It does mean decreasing salary cap room.

The Giants made no mistake by drafting Andre Woodson and signing David Carr in the offseason. Jerry Reese is an amazing General Manager and is able to think outside the box. Remember, Reese was not behind the drafting of Eli Manning. He has no emotional connection to admitting the Eli Manning pick was a failure.

David Carr is a capable quarterback who has not played behind a good offensive line. His potential has been unknown throughout his career. Reese’s plan is to trade Eli Manning and install David Carr as the new starting quarterback. Andre Woodson will then take over reigns as backup and be groomed to be Carr’s replacement one day.

Now, the Giants will use the freed cap room to either surround Carr with the best weapons available in free agency and the draft or commit to the running game and add depth to the offensive line and defense.

Eli is open to this idea, as while it will draw media attention initially, he will be out of the spotlight in New York. The Giants will look to land and established or upcoming receiver in the trade to replace Burress or to play alongside him if he returns.

Possible Trades

1. Eli Manning to Minnesota Vikings for Sidney Rice, third-round Draft Pick, and sixth-round Draft Pick. Sidney Rice would be a nice replacement or complement to Burress, at 6'4" 202 lbs. Vikings desperately need a quarterback that they can name their starter and keep as their starter.

2. Eli Manning to Arizona Cardinals for Antuan Boldin and third-round Draft Pick. This option may be more likely if Burress does not return, since it seems Boldin would rather be held in higher regard than any other receiver on his team. Also, this is assuming the Kurt Warner will retire after this year or part with the Cardinals.

3. Eli Manning to Tampa Bay for second-round Draft Pick, third-round Draft Pick, and second-Round Draft Pick in 2010. Tampa Bay wants younger option than Jeff Garcia. Giants love draft picks.

4. Eli Manning and second-round Draft Pick to Detroit Lions for second-round Draft Pick, third-round Draft Pick, and fifth-round Pick. Lions need an answer at quarterback and could use their number one pick on building the defense.

5. If Eli wishes to stay in New York and Brett Favre retires: Eli Manning to Jets for first-round Draft Pick. Eli will replace Favre and Giants will use pick to select the best linebacker available, Brian Cushing or Brandon Spikes.

Note: I put this in humor because I realize there is a .001 percent chance of this happening and the idea is slightly comical. However, I believe this scenario could make the Giants an even more solid team. Remember the taste of the recent Giants loss is still in my mouth and I have never been too fond of Eli Manning.

Breaking News: Plaxico Burress Has Not Had a Trial Yet!

Facts are facts, and I am not attempting to make excuses or say that Plaxico Burress is innocent of any crime. However, it is amazing to see all these people "hating on" the Giants' wide receiver who accidentally shot himself.

Just as quickly as the whole nation jumped on the New York Giants bandwagon last year and so far this year, they have hoped on to the one riding next to it; The "Burress is Bad News" bandwagon.

The legal battle has not even begun yet. Is it too much to ask that we all withhold judgement until the judicial system speaks on the issue? What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Article after article bashing Plaxico Burress can be found on this site and anti-Burress comments are all over sports blogs. I understand his actions were not well advised, but seriously, give him a break. He did not kill anyone or any animals.

Burress has a cleaner record then Adam Jones and Chris Henry, yet the spotlight is being forced onto him like he set a new record for most crimes per season. CPS, a new stat column to be found in the NFL soon.

Seriously, there is all this negative coverage on Burress now, and I am sure there is more to come as soon as a ruling is dealt. If he is found guilty, we will hear how Burress "got what he deserved."

If he is found innocent or receives a small fine, it will be about how professional athletes get off too easily.

I ask you to lay off Burress for now. There will be plenty to say in a few months. Let's not drag this out until then!

P.S. Bloomberg's comments were unacceptable. Great take on the Burress situation here.

New York Giants Should Explore Rutgers WR Kenny Britt

I am aware the regular season has not even ended, and the order of the NFL Draft for 2009 is far from being figured out. I am also aware that the Giants have not parted ways with WR Plaxico Burress as of now.

However, the need to replace Plaxico Burress may be in the future of the New York Giants if they feel it is best to part ways with the talented receiver.

While the Giants have great depth at the receiver spot, they do not have great height. Amani Toomer, is the tallest active WR on the squad at 6' 3". Toomer is also currently 34 years old and his retirement is sure to follow soon, especially if the Giants pull of a repeat this year.

The next tallest receiver is 6' 2" and goes by the name of Domenik Hixon. Moss, Smith, and Manningham do not reach 6". Plaxico Burress is 6' 5" and that makes him a great threat. If the Giants part with Burress, a taller receiver will make the transition to football without Plaxico easier.

While it is unclear where the Giants will pick or whether or not Kenny Britt will declare for the NFL Draft, he would be a great addition to the New York Giants. Britt is listed as 6' 4", only an inch shorter than Burress.

He also plays football for the Scarlet Knights of Rutger in New Jersey, about an hour away from Giants Stadium. This would make it a swift and smooth transition for him.

Okay, so height and location not enough to win Britt a consideration for a second- or third-round draft pick? In 2007, Britt posted five 10-plus yard performances. He amassed 81 receptions, eight touchdowns, and 1,252 yards for the year.

So far in the 2008 season, Britt has put up 100-plus yard performances seven times in the 12-game season. He has made at least five receptions in all but two games this year (his lowest total was three receptions). He has scored six times.

Consistency is a huge factor in the play of a receiver. He has been consistent on a Rutgers team that has seen variable play from quarterback Mike Teel.

To be able to put up solid numbers every game is an accomplishment and the Giants need a consistent receiver to replace Burress. The bottom line is that Britt can get open on a regular basis and if he can perform like that in the NFL, he will be a force to reckon with.

From the mock drafts I have seen so far, the highest Kenny Britt is mentioned is in the second round. He is definitely worth a shot with a late or middle second-round draft pick. If Britt slips to the third round, this could be a steal for the Giants.

I realize there are many "ifs" involved in this situation. However, Kenny Britt deserves at least a glance from the New York Giants scouts.

The Real NFL MVP Revealed

And the winner is...New York Giants center Shaun O'Hara. This will never happen, but the question I ask is, "why not?"

First off, where is the requirement that the most valuable player has to score touchdowns, sack the quarterback, or intercept passes? It would be nice to see, even for one year, an offensive lineman chosen as league MVP. An offensive lineman's play will effect anything an offense does.

Sure there are great runners and quarterbacks who rightfully deserve this award, but who is behind, or rather in front of, every yard gained by the offense? Yes, the offensive line. Without solid blocking, no quarterback would get a pass off and no running back would make it out of the backfield.

Why Shaun O'Hara you ask? Well, if the fact that he is the leader of the offensive line that boasts the number one rushing attack in the NFL is not good for you, look even deeper. The Giants signed Shaun O'Hara in 2004.

In 2003 Giants starting running back had Tiki Barber had 1216 rushing yards with 4.4 yards a carry. The year O'Hara joined the Giants, Tiki Barber ran for a total of 1518 yards while averaging 4.7 yards a carry. In 2005, Barber posted even more yards, 1860 and had a 5.2 yard average. So that was then, this is now right?

Fine, but ponder this. The Giants have two running backs with over 500 yards, with Jacobs 50 yards away from eclipsing the 1,000 yard mark. Ward has 630 yards. The Giants third back, Bradshaw has 310 yards. Okay, so that's impressive, but is that enough to win your vote? If not, Ward's solid 4.8 yards a carry average is the lowest! Jacobs has a 5.1 average and Bradshaw has a 6.3 average.

Remember, there is still four games left to add to these numbers. In 2008, Giants quaterback Eli Manning has been sacked only 15 times. This puts him at 23rd on the list of most sacked quarterbacks. Bottom line is, Manning has time to throw the ball.

If it was possible, the MVP should be given to every member of this starting offensive line for the New York Giants. However, the MVP only goes to one player. Shaun O'Hara is, without doubt, the leader of that offensive line.

Let us embrace change! Enough of these statistical MVPs. I am calling for a change to look deeper than one or two stat columns. Remember these unsung heroes in the offensive line. It is time to give them credit.

Just for note, the only chosen MVP that played offensive line was awarded the Joe F. Car Trophy in 1938 (first recorded MVP of the NFL). You guessed it, Mel Hein played center for the New York Giants.

New York Giants: Plaxico Burress Solution!

Before every Giants fan jumps on the "We do not need him" bandwagon and asks for the release of Plaxico Burress, let us calm down and look at some facts.

Keep in mind these are not excuses for the 31-year-old wide receiver, just some things to consider.

The media loves to point out every negative they can find about high-profile people. It makes news and draws attention from readers and television viewers. Had this been an average person, he probably would have been able to get away without any criminal charges since the gun was taken from the scene.

Plaxico did not fire his weapon at anybody. We are talking about a man who makes seven million dollars a year and is very high profile. I would carry around a gun if I was in his shoes.

He should have gotten the proper permission to carry a gun and perhaps he was unaware of this rule, but at least he knows what happens if no team scores in overtime.

Burress caught one of the most important passes in Giants history. He played through a high-ankle sprain last year, sacrificing his body to allow for the Giants success.

This year, teams have double teamed him every time he has stepped on the field. Look at the success this has allowed for the other receivers on the team.

The NFL is a business and don't we all want raises? Do not jump on his back because he wanted a new contract. If you could make significantly more money at another company, you certainly would be there too. A player's career can end at any second due to injury, you have to make the money while you can.

Missing one practice is not the end of the world. He was also fined. Missing a team meeting is not the end of the world, and he was fined over $100,000 and suspended a game. This is an issue, no doubt, but he is not missing multiple practices and meetings. He has shown up to the rest.

If the Giants release him, they will receive high salary cap penalties. There are plenty of teams that would request his services at the end of the season and the Giants could get at least a second-round draft pick for him.

People can change!

Plaxico has not released a statement about the event, however this gives the Giants organization a reason to put a leash on Burress. If Burress chooses to stay, he also knows he is on thin ice. He may agree to strict demands from the Giants organization to stay with the team that allowed him to call himself a champion.

Finally, Burress is one of the most talented players in the NFL. The Giants have shown they can win without him. However, Burress has also shown what he can do on the field for the Giants.

Brett Favre-Aaron Rodgers: Week Two Comparison

This is the second installment of the Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers match-up. Let’s kick it week two style.

The Packers had a solid victory over the Detroit Lions, 48-25, making the Packers' management look like geniuses so far for deciding to go with QB Aaron Rodgers.

I'd like to stress, just like I did last week, that it is too early to clearly see how well Aaron Rodgers will perform during the course of his career. However, we can say that he is 2-0 as the starter for the Green Bay Packers. For now, all is well for the cheese heads.

Brett Favre suffered his first loss as a New York Jet this week, 19-10, against the defending AFC Champions, the New England Patriots.

Before we hand Rodgers a victory this week, let us consider the fact that the Patriots are a more valid opponent than the Lions. Green Bay was supposed to win the game, while the Jets were supposed to “give it all they had” to try for the upset. Before we declare a winner, let's review some stats?

Passing Yards

With 328 yards through the air, Rodgers crushes Favre’s total of 181 this week

Completions

Rodgers completed six more passes, getting 24 to Favre’s 18. This is the second week in a row that Rodgers wins this category. He now has nine more completions than Favre on the season.

Completion Percentage

Rodgers dropped to 63.2 percent this week, allowing Favre’s 69.2 percent to claim this category.

Touchdowns

Rodgers wins with three passing touchdowns compared to Favre’s lone six-point toss. Neither player had a rushing touchdown.

Passer Rating

Rodgers takes the victory this week with a passer rating of 117.0. Favre mustered an 85.6 rating.

Mobility

Aaron Rodgers wins this category after rushing four times for 25 yards. Favre carried the ball twice for six yards. Favre was also sacked twice, while Rodgers was able to get the throw off all but once.

Final Analysis

Before we jump on the “Trouble in NY” bandwagon, remember that the Patriots are a good team, even without Tom Brady. Also, remember that Brady does not play defense, so Brett Favre’s day was not made any easier by the loss of Brady.

It is no surprise that Favre did not have better numbers than Rodgers. However, it is a surprise that, after two weeks, Rodgers has not thrown an interception. Favre only turned the ball over once this week, but he lost fumble last week. Rodgers put the ball on the ground twice this week, only losing one.

Therefore they both only committed one turnover last game. Surprisingly, after two weeks, Rodgers will receive the nod for having the better game.

Here is why he gets it this week: Even though his opponent was mediocre, the Packers won the game. Not only did they win it, but they put up 48 points. Favre and the Jets could only put up 10 points. The Jets lost by two possessions, the Packers won by three possessions.

Congratulations for your week two victory Aaron Rodgers, keep up the good work and good luck to both in week three.

Score after Week Two

Favre 0, Rodgers 2

Mathias Kiwanuka Uninjured; Chris Samuel Accused of Dirty Play

The last play of the New York Giants and Washington Redskins game this past Thursday is sparking some controversy.

Mathias Kiwanuka was rushing the passer and had Samuel beat off the line. However, Samuel made a last effort to prevent a sack by pulling down Kiwanuka from behind, resulting in a declined penalty to end the game.

It also resulted in a scary moment for Giants fans as the DE gone LB rolled on the ground in pain. In the wake of the loss of Umenyiora for the year, another defensive line injury would result in serious depth chart issues. (The play in question can be seen here.)

An article in the New York Daily News reports that Tom Coughlin had a short word with Samuel, who only said he did not mean for that to happen. Kiwanuka stated he felt the play was dirty.

Nothing like a little finger pointing to make the Nov. 30 game even more exciting.

Don't you love the NFC East?

Rutgers Must Convert in the Red Zone Against North Carolina

The Scarlet Knights take on North Carolina this Thursday night hoping to turn their season in the right direction. The Rutgers squad is coming off a loss to Fresno State, while the Tar Heels edged McNeese State in their season opener.

Since tickets are sold out, there is no doubt that the stadium in Piscataway will be packed with Rutgers fans giving support to the (0-1) team that desperately needs it at this point.

However, Greg Schiano has to find a way to get his team ready for battle to avoid watching fans pour out of the stadium early again.

The key to this game for Rutgers will be their defense, which played strong in the Fresno State game for the first half and then turned into a practice squad for the second.

T.J. Yates, the Carolina quarterback, will have to be pressured throughout the game. Rutgers cannot allow him to sit in the pocket all game long. He had a two-touchdown performance last week and completed 57.7 percent of his passes.

If the front four can pressure him, he will look more like the 18-interception QB he was last year. Rutgers cannot let Hakeem Nicks or Brandon Tate run wide open down field for big gains either.

Nicks posted a 71-yard reception last week and could be eying the Rutgers defense, which gave up a few monster gains against Fresno State. Rutgers should be able to control the rushing game, as Greg Little only posted 37 yards on 14 carries last week. Shaun Draughn looked better with 30 yards on only seven carries and a touchdown.

Special Teams could prove critical in this one as well. If the Scarlet Knights can break a few decent runbacks, it would take the pressure of Teel to move the ball 70 or 80 yards.

Rutgers took a punt back for a touchdown against Fresno State, only to have it negated by an illegal block.

Rutgers has to be careful of the Tar Heels' return game as well. Brandon Tate busted a 56-yard kick return. He also returned three punts for 142 yards, including an 82-yard touchdown.

Also, who can forget Rutgers' poor field goal kicking? They need to find an answer to that now.

The offense needs to be more confident. Mike Teel needs to find a hint of accuracy in his throws that were all over the place last game. The offense moved the ball well against Fresno State throughout the first half, but came up empty in the point column.

They should have no problem moving the ball against UNC, which gave up 27 points last week. However, they cannot afford to leave the red zone without any points. If they are unable to convert drives into points this game, it will be another loss for Rutgers.

Kordell Young needs to lower his pads and drive when they run near the goal line and the offensive line needs to supply some push for him. Teel had time to throw last game, so the line needs to keep up the good work against the pass rush.

PREDICTION

Rutgers, embarrassed after their opening loss, returns with a fire and blows away UNC. Teel throws for four touchdowns, but also two interceptions. Kordell Young will have a repeat performance, posting close to 100 yards and finding the end zone once.

RU-38 UNC-17

Rutgers-Fresno State: Greg Schiano Has Problems to Address

It was a sea of red. If you did not wear red to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights home opener, you stuck out like a sore thumb. The stadium roared for the team when they took the field before opening kickoff.

However, Greg Schiano’s squad never gained motivation and played flat, resulting in a 24-7 loss to Fresno State last night.

Rutgers football has many questions to address, while their fans' hopes of a national championship began deflating in every section of the stadium in Piscataway.

The first half looked promising for the red team as they put together two good-looking drives. The first ended in a turnover on downs as Schiano decided to go against the proven coaching normative and go for it on a fourth-and-goal on the three-yard line. Fresno State’s defense supplied the stop and kept the Scarlet Knights off the scoreboard.

The second drive resulted in a field goal attempt for freshman kicker San San Te, who kicked the ball nowhere near the uprights. Another decent Rutgers drive put them across the 50-yard line, only to see a Mike Teel bomb miss its target by about 10 yards and fall into the hands of a Fresno State safety.

Nevertheless, Rutgers was handling the defense—it just wasn't converting drives into points.

The defense was impressive in the first half, holding Fresno State to zero points as well. Despite a few first downs, Fresno State was unable to move an inch on the Rutgers defense.

As the cannon fired at the end of the half, a look around showed a reassured look on the fans' faces. That look said they knew their team was going to pull the win out.

The second half warmup was the most disturbing thing of the whole game. San San Te set up his practice tee for about a 30-yard attempt. After missing from different spots on the field five out of eight times, I gave up watching him in hopes it was just some kind of joke.

However, there were no jokes being played, as San San Te missed another one in the second half, leaving him 0-2 on the day.

It was not just San San Te who struggled. It seemed as if the teams switched jerseys at halftime. The Rutgers offense continued to supply the team with no points, while the defense started to crumble in front of their home crowd.

Two deep passes were given up in the second, one for a touchdown, and the other to convert on a 3rd-and-23. Fresno State’s running back began to look like a Heisman hopeful and shredded the interior of the Rutgers defense.

Rutgers, who mostly stayed out of trouble with penalties, washed away a return touchdown with an illegal block in the back. Kordell Young supplied Rutgers' only touchdown with a one-yard run in the early fourth quarter to pull Rutgers to within three (the extra point was sarcastically cheered).

However, the defense allowed a touchdown on the ensuing Fresno State possession, and the offense never regained form. After the 17-7 lead, the stadium started to empty, as did any fight that was left in the Rutgers team. Another touchdown capped off the 24-7 victory for Fresno State and left the stadium vacated of fans.

Basically, it is back to classes with that empty feeling of loss.

Game Notes

MVP: Fresno State’s Ryan Matthews, who compiled 163 rushing yards. Keep an eye on this kid as the season progresses.

Kordell Young filled in nicely for the drafted Ray Rice. He rushed for 94 yards but displayed no power running. He was Rutgers' only bright spot in this game.

Mike Teel’s hope for being scouted by the NFL is probably at zero percent after his two-interception performance. He looked like a mediocre high school quarterback trying to make it in the college ranks.

Kenny Britt looked strong at wide receiver. However, Tiquan Underwood dropped a decent pass over the middle.

Note to Greg Schiano: Look at other players' ability to kick the ball in the vicinity of the uprights.

Jonathan Ogden Retires, and Offensive Line Crumbles in Baltimore

Following a dismal 5-11 finish to last season, the Baltimore Ravens should expect to lose their 11 time Pro-Bowl offensive tackle tomorrow. Baltimore's local paper the Baltimore Sun reports they have received word from Johnathan Ogden that he will hang up the helmet and pads after 12 seasons in the NFL.

This will come as no surprise to fans and the franchise since a toe injury that has been bothering Ogden lately and he has expressed he was pondering the idea of retirement.

No surprise does not mean no worries, however, as Baltimore's coaching staff will have plenty to figure out when answering to last seasons 39 sacks, which is 2.4 sacks allowed a game. The line also allowed for only a mediocre 16th best running game in the NFL.

Take into consideration that performance was with their All-Pro offensive tackle on hand for ten games. Without Ogden, sacks and poor rushing performances could plague the Ravens in 2008.

Let us not forget the most important question: Where do they find leadership in the offensive line?

The Ravens need answers to this fast. Right now, the best the Ravens are looking at is moving forward with second year player Jared Gaither.

However, Gaitheris not Ogden, and if the coaching staff expects him to be, they have another thing coming. The locker room presence that Ogden brought will not be match by anyone next year.

Management will need to figure this one out over the next few years, because replacing a 12-year veteran who has seen all his seasons with your franchise is impossible.

Bottom Line: Great career Johnathan Ogden and good luck to the Baltimore Ravens with replacing him with someone half as good.

Michael Strahan's Career at a Glance: the Giant Heads into the Sunset

After 15 years in the National Football League, Michael Strahan has decided to call it a career after winning Super Bowl XLII. What a great way to go out.

It really is a fairy-tale ending for the single-season sack king and all-time sack leader for the Giants.

That being said, let us make something clear. No record was handed to Strahan. Watching that infamous play when Brett Favre rolled out and fell down will always be pinned on his career in a negative fashion.

However, look at the facts. At that point in the game, the Packers were well enough ahead of the Giants to not force any throws. Favre had his back to Strahan's side until he completed the fake hand off and started to roll out.

Does it cross your mind that he saw Strahan coming, took a quick look around for a receiver, and then decided to take a light sack instead of forcing the ball into coverage? While you could argue it looks designed, if it really was, would you not think that they would have made it look like a more convincing sack?

Either way, Strahan dominated offensive tackles his whole career. His career total of 141.5 sacks puts him at .655 sacks a game. That means he averaged more than a sack every other game, throughout his career.

He had six years with more than 10 sacks, including three in a row. When it came to putting pressure on the quarterback, Strahan was one of the best ever. He is definitely better than NFL Network's ranking of him in seventh place all-time.

Not enough noise is made about Strahan's run-stopping ability. The New York Giants defense may have had many years of poor pass defense. However, the defensive line always seemed to be able to put up sacks and keep opposing runners from dominating. The only familiar face on the line all those years was Michael Strahan's.

These numbers, and his recent Super Bowl win, will put Strahan in the Hall of Fame. No football fan would suggest Strahan will not make it to Canton. After all, he is one of the best defensive ends ever, and probably the one who had the most character.

Now that Strahan has announced his retirement, the Giants will need to replace more than a defensive end. In fact, that will not be the problem at all, considering they have ample talent at that position, whether they decide to place Tuck there or move Kiwanuka back to the end position.

The Giants' problem is replacing a player who has seen it all the way through with this organization. They need to replace the heart and soul of the defense.

The most likely candidates for defensive captain would be Osi Umenyiora, who may eventually put together a career as fine as Strahan's; or Antonio Pierce, who has become a dominating middle linebacker. Either way, it is up to the players on the Giants defense to trust their new locker-room leader while keeping the same drive and dedication Strahan will take with him.

Farewell, Michael Strahan, and much success in your future off the field. Finally, thank you for the years of fantastic play.

New York Giants: Sold Out Tickets, Resale Prices, Angry Fan

All right, I do not like using Bleacher Report to vent, but I have to. I am very happy that the Giants are able to sell out every game, every year. It means they are franchise with a magnificent fan base that is willing to support them year in and year out.

However, it is frustrating that the Giants do not sell single-game tickets. It is even more frustrating that fans who resell these tickets, feel they need to charge an arm and a leg for them. It destroys the hopes of those who want to see their team play once a year, but cannot justify throwing $250 on seats in the worst section of the stadium.

What baffles me is that the Giants do not reserve a few seats for single game sale. Giants Stadium has an occupancy of a little over 80,000. They could easily sell 5,000 to 10,000 single-game tickets at face value. They would make the same amount of money, and it would not hurt ticket sales at all. It would also give people the chance to see a football game. Personally, I have met many Giants fans who never have seen a game, simply because they just cannot afford to buy these tickets.

Bottom Line: Shame on you people who resell tickets at 300 percent of what you paid for them. The Giants do not see that money, so it isn't even supporting your franchise by buying them. They are already sold tickets. It is people like you that will prevent people like me from buying tickets to take my grandmother to see her favorite team (can she buy her own, yes, but that is not the point. She won't, I would).

Because of this, many people will never experience NFL football live. I know there are many people who share my view on this one and have similar situations. Shame on you, the season-ticket holder who sells for ridiculous prices because some rich person will buy them from you.

Fixing the Super Bowl: A Modest Proposal II

Help me, sports fans! Football is played on Sundays; it is tradition. Therefore, never in a million years would I suggest moving the game to a Saturday night.

However, many people, including myself, dread going to work or school the next day. With an estimated 97.5 million people watching the Super Bowl this year, it is safe to say there were plenty of tired souls dragging themselves out of bed to get to work the next day.

I propose an idea that the Monday after the Super Bowl should be a holiday. While the calendar is already filled with many holidays, what is one more day?

This day could be used for big blow out sales too! Think of the benefit for the economy and an opportunity for you to sleep in.
