Sheldon Brown, Ellis Hobbs, and a Defense without a Leader

The sexiest draft of the Andy Reid era has come and gone.

The Philadelphia Eagles moved from the 21st to 19th overall pick to select Mizzou wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, a player most experts projected to go in the top 10.

With their second pick the team grabbed Brian Westbrook's heir apparent in Pitt's LeSean McCoy. The one addition that went unnoticed and may be the biggest of all was the addition of cornerback Ellis Hobbs.

That's right—that Ellis Hobbs.

The New England Patriots parted with their long-time starting corner after bolstering their secondary in the draft. Deemed expendable by the Bill Belichick front office, the Eagles obtained Hobbs for just two fifth-round picks.

Hobbs is aware of the situation he is entering.

"I heard rumors anyway that [the Eagles] were interested and things like that," Hobbs said. "I didn't have any expectations that something would shake this early."

The trade raises questions about disgruntled corner Sheldon Brown's future with the Eagles. He has demanded a trade, but was denied by the Eagles front office.

Brown sees the Hobbs trade as his ticket out of town.

"I think it's great," Brown said Sunday. "I look at it as great news in terms of me being traded."

In the meantime, Brown said he will attend the team's mandatory mini-camp.

If the Eagles decide to move Brown, Hobbs will likely become the starting corner next to fellow ex-Patriot Asante Samuel.

Still, Brown's discontent is unsettling. After signing with Denver at the start of free agency, fan-favorite Brian Dawkins predicted Brown would assume the leadership position on the defense.

"I believe Sheldon [Brown] will begin to step up and talk a lot more," Dawkins said in March. "I know he doesn't like to do that, but I think he will start to say more things in the locker room and on the field."

The city of Philadelphia had been spoiled with Dawkins. Since 1996, "Dawk" was the vocal and emotional leader for the defense, and in many ways the entire team. His departure was unexpected and left the team searching for answers.

With Dawkins gone and Brown grumbling, the defense is without a leader. A logical choice is middle linebacker Stewart Bradley. A third-round pick in 2007, Bradley led the team in tackles with 108 last season.

The only problem is that Bradley is one of the youngest starters on an already young squad.

In all likelihood, the defense will lead itself.

"I feel like, with us having a committee of people who can set examples, who can put people in the right place, that we can get the job done," safety Quintin Mikell said.

In March, Brown himself echoed Mikell's sentiment.

"I think leadership is overrated," he said. "Your work ethic is your leadership."

Clearly, things have changed since then.

All signs point to Brown being an Eagle in 2009. What is unclear is how he will impact a talented young unit looking to rebound after a poor performance in the NFC Championship game last season.

The Eagles' defense will find the answer sooner rather than later. If they want to make another run at the Super Bowl, the "D" will be paving the way.

Whether they will have a leader to show them the way remains to be seen.

Why I Love the NFL Draft

All right, I admit it. I am an NFL addict.

Like many of you, I can't get enough of the game of football. Every snap, every play, every touchdown, every heartbreak, and every upset is a moment to be cherished.

And common sense be damned, I'm just as bad during the offseason.

Instead of spending quality time with friends and family, I'm scouring message boards and blogs, looking for the most recent information about this free agent or that rookie-to-be.

I probably need help.

But lo, there are those out there who share this obsession. We are the fans of the NFL, and we are many. And in the "non-playing season," there are few events as big as the NFL Draft, held this weekend at Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.

It's the time of year where the Mike Mayocks and Mel Kipers of the world reappear in our lives, filling our heads with funny names like Knowshon Moreno and D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

Many will say they miss the old days when the NFL Draft was little more than a press conference. It was a simpler time, they will say. A better time.

To them, I say this: Screw you pal!

Indeed, it's hard to imagine that the founders of the NFL could have ever imagined what the event would turn into. Heck, the league didn't even have a formal draft until 1949.

But a lot has changed since then. There are now more teams in the NFL than in just about any other major sports league. Media coverage is non-stop. And fans are still willing to pay way too much for nosebleed seats.

Football has captured the hearts of Americans everywhere, and the league doesn't show signs of slowing down.

The splendor and drama that is the NFL Draft is fitting for the sport that has become larger than life. The dramatic buildup and comprehensive pre-draft coverage by networks like ESPN and NFL Network is only giving the fans what they want:

"More, more, and more!"

This Saturday, when you and your friends sit down to watch Roger Goodell announce the first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, don't be ashamed of your love for the game of football.

Embrace it.

Love it.

Cherish it.

You won't be the only one.

Are The Eagles Really "Fine" at Receiver?

By now, fans know the drill.

It happens every offseason. Once the ruckus of free agency dies down, right before the draft, a reporter asks head coach Andy Reid what he thinks about the team’s wide receivers.

Every year, it’s the same answer: “We’re fine at receiver.”

The ritual has become a joke for Eagles fans. Not since 2004 has the team had a true superstar receiver, and that was the year the team made it to the Super Bowl.

So far this offseason, the team has been linked to receivers like Torry Holt, Braylon Edwards and Anquan Boldin. Fans are salivating at the thought of Reid bringing a veteran receiver to the City of Brotherly Love.

But is a team’s passing attack really so important to winning a Super Bowl? For this, history will be the judge.

Since 2004, most Super Bowl winning offenses have been mediocre. Only one, the 2006 Indianapolis Colts, has ranked in the top five of total yards.

The old adage of “defense wins championships” seems to have some validity. The average ranking of Super Bowl winning defenses since 2004 is eighth.

And in truth, the defense was the best unit for the Eagles last season. The team was ranked first in the NFC in total defense, and the unit was largely responsible for Philly’s postseason success.

Of course, it was also responsible for the no-show it gave during the title game in Arizona.

With Brian Dawkins gone, there are legitimate questions about how well the defense will play without its leader. While the veteran players dismiss the possibility of a letdown, results are shown on the field, not through the media.

Reid’s specialty has always been offense. His first-ever draft pick was a quarterback named Donovan McNabb. He has been responsible for creating one of the most explosive and consistent offenses of the past decade.

But the unit will have to step it up next season. Wideout DeSean Jackson has shown promise, and will have to continue that success. Kevin Curtis had an injury-plagued year in 2008, but had 1,000 yards receiving in 2007.

The team added a receiving threat in free agency with the addition of fullback Leonard Weaver. He is known more for his receiving skills than his lead blocking, a skill likely to be utilized next season.

The draft will likely answer some of the questions on offense, as the team has two first round picks. Given Reid’s draft history, it’s unlikely that the team will hang on to both. This has led to rampant Internet speculation about trades. Browns receiver Braylon Edwards and Arizona’s Anquan Boldin are the top choices among fans.

Ultimately, though, it will most likely be the Dawkins-less defense that makes or breaks the team next season. Added help for McNabb certainly wouldn’t hurt, though.

The Eagles' Offseason Leaves Players, Fans Wondering What's Next

Unlike U.S. President Barack Obama, transparency is not a high priority for Philadelphia Eagles President Joe Banner and his front office staff. Coupled with head coach Andy Reid’s penchant for not revealing any of the team’s plans, the Eagles' offseason moves—and lack thereof—have left many fans scratching their heads.

The conversation of the offseason begins and ends with safety Brian Dawkins. For many, his departure was a bitter pill to swallow. Although the team signed two safeties in former Brown Sean Jones and Raider Rashad Baker, many fans weren’t ready to let Dawkins go.

In truth, Dawkins wasn’t ready to go, either. After signing with the Denver Broncos, Dawkins said he felt hurt.

"[Philadelphia is] a place that I very much felt a part of.” Dawkins said after signing with the Broncos. “I felt like a Philadelphian, so this is very hurtful. But I'm trying to move forward with the Broncos."

"His legacy is solid with the Philadelphia Eagles.” Andy Reid said earlier this week. “He is a Hall of Fame player. It didn't work out. Those things happen. I wish him nothing but the best of luck in Denver.”

In an interview, Dawkins said that cornerback Sheldon Brown will likely be the player to lead the defense in his absence.

Brown said that while Dawkins’ leadership was valued, its importance was overrated.

“People didn't respect Dawk because he spoke well,” Brown said. “They respected him for the way he worked in the offseason and the way he was always there for you as a teammate.”

The team boasted the best overall defense in the NFC and was third overall in pass defense.

The team also bid farewell to longtime tackle Tra Thomas, and backups Correll Buckhalter and Sean Considine. Right tackle Jon Runyan remains unsigned as he recovers from injury. His return to the team is unlikely.

Lost in the circus surrounding Dawkins’ departure was the signing of former Bengals offensive lineman Stacy Andrews.

Andrews, who is the brother of guard Shawn Andrews, signed a seven-year contract on the first day of free agency. His ability to play both guard and tackle was a major factor in bringing him to Philadelphia, Reid said in an interview this week.

It is unclear which position Andrews will play, but the Eagles now have three multi-dimensional starters in the Andrews brothers and guard Todd Herremans who can play both tackle and guard.

The Eagles aimed to bolster their running game by signing former Seahawks fullback Leonard Weaver to a one-year deal yesterday. Weaver is a solid lead blocker who can also run and catch. He will be penciled in as the starter.

Although the Eagles only used their fullback about 30 percent of the time last year, Weaver said he will do what is asked of him without complaining.

With the top-tier free agents signed, the Eagles are focusing their attention on April’s NFL Draft. The team goes into Draft day with 12 picks, including two in the first round. It is unlikely that the team will hold onto all of these, which has created rampant speculation amongst fans.

Enter Anquan Boldin.

Wide receiver has always been a fixation for fans, and he is this year’s crush. A talented receiver, the Arizona Cardinals’ star Anquan Boldin has surpassed 1,000 yards four times in his six-year career.

His marriage with the Cardinals turned south last offseason after a contract dispute. He has threatened not to re-sign with the team once his contract expires.

The Cardinals have said that Boldin is not available for trade, and quarterback Kurt Warner even offered to take less money to re-sign him. So far there has been no news out of Arizona, which has lead many pundits to speculate that Boldin may be headed to Philadelphia on Draft day.

The move makes sense for both parties. The Eagles need a veteran receiver for quarterback Donovan McNabb, and the Cardinals could use the draft pick to improve an already solid team.

But before fans get too excited, it’s important to remember that the Eagles and Cardinals played in the NFC Championship game last season. If Boldin is available, the Cardinals brass will be hesitant trading him to a conference opponent.

Andy Reid and his staff have always believed in the building a team through the Draft. If a trade for Boldin (or any other receiver, such as the Bengals’ Chad Johnson,) doesn’t go through, look for the Eagles to draft a receiver.

The Draft figures to provide the team with all around offensive firepower. The majority of mock drafts have the Eagles selecting a combination of tight end, running back, and offensive lineman with their two first round picks.

The bottom line here is that the offseason is far from over. The regular season is six months away, and plenty can happen between now and then.

One thing is for sure—for better or worse—the 2009 Philadelphia Eagles will be worth watching.

TJ Houshmandzadeh, Jordan Gross, and the Free Agents That Could Make the Eagles "Super"

NFL fans, free agency is nearly upon us.
On February 27th, the NFL opens the doors on what looks to be one of the most talented groups of free agents in recent memory.
The list is staggering: Ray Lewis, Brian Dawkins, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are just some of the players who might be moving to new cities.
True, Lewis and Dawkins will almost certainly re-sign with the teams that drafted them, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t high-profile names who could be moving to Philadelphia.
The Eagles need the most immediate help at offensive tackle. Both Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan are at the twilight of their playing days and are free agents. Winston Justice was drafted to be the future at tackle, but hasn’t played well in his limited snaps.
Jordan Gross of the Carolina Panthers is almost certainly a player on the top of the Eagles’ front office list. Head coach Andy Reid covets lineman, so Reid would likely jump at the chance to steal Gross from a conference rival.
The name on the top of fans’ wishlists is none other than Bengals wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh. “Housh” fueled the fire by telling a local sports radio station that he would be willing to sign with the Eagles if they are interested.
The Eagles’ fans have been clamoring for a high-profile receiver since Terrell Owens talked his way out of town following the 2005 season. Then-rookie DeSean Jackson had a great season in 2008, but he was the only consistent receiver. After the team’s loss in the NFC Championship game, quarterback Donovan McNabb again that the team needs more playmakers.
This year’s deep and talented free agency class gives the Eagles several options to improve the team.
Here are just five players who might help the Eagles get, in the immortal words of ‘Spinal Tap’, “that extra push over the cliff.”
Begin Slideshow

Brian Dawkins Sets Tempo, Heartbeat For Philly's Improbable Run

Is there anyone in the NFL who deserves to win a Super Bowl more than Brian Dawkins?

Let me answer that for you: No.

Dawkins is an anomaly in Philadelphia. In a town known for being critical and at times unfair (just ask Donovan McNabb) to its athletes, the Eagles' Pro Bowl safety can do no wrong.

And rightfully so. In addition to being a seven-time Pro Bowler, Dawkins is the heart and soul of the defense, and creates the attitude of the team.

To Eagles fans, he is a God among men; the embodiment of their passion, spirit, and tough-nosed love for the game of football.

For all the respect he earns off the field, his teammates might just give him more.

"He is always prepared, he always wants the guys prepared just as much as he is," Brian Westbrook said last week. "[H]e has done a great job of leading this team."

Dawkins may be as well known for his preparation as he is for his leadership. Before a game, the normally quiet man will slowly turn into the crazed superhero known as "Weapon X", a nod to the Marvel hero Wolverine.

His pregame speeches are the stuff of legend in The City of Brotherly Love. He takes it upon himself to fire up his teammates, and maintains his intensity throughout the game.

"He's so strong mentally. He's as tough as you can imagine. I've got a lot of guys that love to play the game, but I would say that there's nobody that loved to play as much as him." Head coach Andy Reid said. "You can tell by the way he comes out of that tunnel that when it's time to go, it's time to go. You have to love that from a coaching standpoint and I know his fellow players respect him for that."

As the Eagles rolled over the Giants at the Meadowlands today, one can't help but wonder how far the Eagles would have made it without him this season.

Last year was not the best of seasons for Dawkins. After his twin daughters were born three months premature, Brian Dawkins the safety had to spend more time being Brian Dawkins the father, a decision that was a no-brainer for him.

A then 34-year old Dawkins spent the remainder of the season answering questions about his remaining time in Philly. Yes, he said, he would be back. No, he said, he did not think his playing years were over.

This season has marked a comeback of sorts for Dawkins. He made the Pro Bowl for the seventh time in his thirteen-year career. After McNabb's infamous benching, Dawkins spoke to his teammates. Whatever he said must have worked.

The Eagles have won six of their last seven games, thanks in large part to the Eagles defense. The unit finished third in the NFL in total defense; first in the NFC. Who do you thank for that?

You know who.

"Through all those down times, we didn't allow one another to doubt." Dawkins said following Sunday's win at the Meadowlands. "I don't know if it comes from one person or one individual, but it's a collective heartbeat right now."

The team may have a collective heartbeat, but the one setting the pace of that heartbeat is none other than "Weapon X", Brian Dawkins.

NFL's Sixth-Seeded Teams Are Looking "Super"

The year was 2005.

Led by young quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the Pittsburgh Steelers—the number six seed in the playoffs that year—shocked the world by winning three playoff games on the road en route to a Super Bowl XL victory against the Seattle Seahawks.

Flash forward to this season. Both sixth seeded teams are alive in the playoffs. And you can bet they would both like to have a little bit of that 2005 magic on their side.

In the AFC, the Baltimore Ravens travel Saturday to face the Tennessee Titans, while the Eagles in the NFC will face division rival and defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants on Sunday.

The Eagles and Ravens have more in common than the species of their mascots. Both teams are riding winning streaks, thanks to the play of their respective defenses.

For the Ravens this comes as little surprise. Baltimore has long been known as a defensive juggernaut, despite their 5-11 record last season. Under new head coach (and former Eagles assistant) John Harbaugh, the team finished 11-5 and made the playoffs.

Ed Reed and the Ravens' defense have been nearly unstoppable in recent weeks. During last weekend's Wild Card round, the Ravens notched four interceptions against the season's most efficient passer in Chad Pennington.

It has been a different story in Philadelphia. The Eagles have long been known as an offensive team. In recent weeks, that mentality has changed. Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has assembled arguably the best defensive unit since the Buddy Ryan era. After being left for dead only one month earlier, his unit has helped pave the way for Philly's improbable postseason run.

The Eagles are also led by playmaking safety Brian Dawkins. The 35-year-old (going on 25) safety has revitalized his career after family issues and injury affected his play last season. This year Dawkins forced six fumbles and made the Pro Bowl for the seventh time in his thirteen years.

The only thing more important than a good defense in the playoffs is a good running game. Both teams have impressive ground attacks with two distinct styles.

For Philadelphia, it's all about Brian Westbrook. Mr. Everything, as he is affectionately called in The City of Brotherly Love, is a dynamic runner who is also a threat in the passing game. A defensive coordinator's worst nightmare, he can move around the backfield and create mismatches against even the stoutest of defenses.

Last Sunday in Minnesota, Westbrook took a screen pass 71 yards for a score that crippled the Vikings and won the Eagles their first playoff game since the 2006 season. "I want to try to make plays for this team. Westbrook said Wednesday. "[N]o matter how many times a team stops me, I still continue to try to make those plays. The effort is there."

Baltimore's run game is threefold. Willis McGahee, rookie Ray Rice and second year veteran Le'Ron McLain combined for over 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground this season. Their mix of speed and power helped make the Ravens the top rushing team in the AFC.

“It’s good to have each one of us because all of us have different styles of running. Le’Ron McClain is a pounder. Ray [Rice] is a slasher." McGahee said Tuesday. "I can just go in there and try to do both. So it’s nice because it throws the defense off balance with our running attack.”

For all their similarities, both teams do have one big difference: quarterback.

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is no stranger to the playoffs. In his ten-year career, McNabb has won eight playoff games, the most of any active player. That’s right--more than three-time MVP Peyton Manning.

For the embattled Eagles signal-caller, this season is the first time he has seen the postseason since the team's 2004 Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots.

"It's no different than it was in 2004." McNabb said. "Anytime that you have an opportunity to continue on with your season and play in a playoff, you just want to relish the moment and continue it on."

The situation could not be much different for Baltimore's rookie quarterback Joe Flacco. He became the first rookie quarterback to win his first playoff game after last week's dismantling of the Miami Dolphins.

But to Ravens' offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, Flacco hasn't been a rookie in awhile. “Really, from our perspective, he lost [the "rookie" tag] a long time ago. The expectation is to play and play well. The good news for all of us is that he expects to even play better than we expect him to play. I think that’s probably the important thing.”

Most importantly, the Eagles and Ravens have veteran leadership and experience. Both teams have been to the Super Bowl. In 2000, the Ravens won it. In the playoffs, experience can be more effective than a potent offense or defense ever could.

"We're playing for one another and giving everything we have for one another." Dawkins said Wednesday. "We're making sure that we go into this game not making mental mistakes and giving ourselves the best opportunity to win the game. I love playing against [the Giants]. It's always a physical battle. 'Out' is not in our vocabulary right now."

With the way both teams are playing, don't be surprised to see a Bird Bowl conclude the 2008 season.

Philadelphia Eagles' Heart, Experience Lead Team into the Meadowlands

The Eagles can be criticized for a lot of things this season. The regular season that was 2008 did not exactly turn out the way the team had planned.

Still, no one can dispute that, above all, the Eagles have one thing going for them above all else: the will to win.

"All of the things that we went through we stayed together, we didn't finger point. We carried on," safety Brian Dawkins said. "The midst of all that adversity built character. It brings a team closer together. Now you even want to play more for that other person. Accountability goes up just a little bit more."

Give the Eagles' players some credit. They could have easily packed it in after the tie and benching of McNabb, events that now seem like ancient history. They could have made excuses and said "better luck next year," like another team in the division (hint: it's Dallas).

But they didn't. They hung tough. They stuck together as a team on Sunday, winning on the road against former Eagles' coordinator Brad Childress and his Minnesota Vikings.

And now the Philadelphia Eagles are advancing to the Divisional round of the playoffs, getting set for a date with the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

A win at the Meadowlands won't come easy. The Eagles and Giants split their two-game series during the regular season. The visiting team won both, and neither game was decided by more than six points.

Still, Philadelphia has confidence. The players have confidence not only in themselves, but in their ability as a team to win games.

For example, take Brian Westbrook. His fourth quarter, 71-yard touchdown run was the game changer, and sealed the Eagles' 26-14 road win against the Vikings on Sunday. On that play, nearly every Eagle on the field stuck a perfect block to allow the All-Pro runner to get down the field for a touchdown.

"We had some tough games early on in the season and we didn't continue to fight throughout those games." Said running back Brian Westbrook, "For us, we have to find a way to fight and we did fight today, which led us to a win."

The Eagles are no strangers to the playoffs. Since 2000, Philadelphia has missed the postseason twice. For McNabb, Sunday's game was the first time since Super Bowl XXXIX, when his team fell to New England.

Few players on the Eagles roster have more big game experience than cornerback Asante Samuel. He proved he was worth his salary, returning a Tarvaris Jackson pass for a touchdown on Sunday.

"You have to step your game up." Samuel said after the game. "From the preseason you have to bring it up a notch for the regular season, playoffs and so on. That's what I try to do."

The entire defense has been stepping up recently. They held the Vikings' offense to two scores all game and posted a shutout in the second half. The defense is going to have to keep up its high play in order to beat New York's potent run game.

"We're confident," cornerback Sheldon Brown said following Sunday's game "We're confident. I mean that's the way we are. It has nothing to do with the last game. It will be a totally different contest and totally different game."

While it might be a different game, the Eagles are hoping it can mirror last month's game at the Meadowlands. The Eagles' defense held the Giants offense to only one score, and Brian Westbrook handled the rest. The game plan is unlikely to change much.

The Giants have arguably the most complete team in the NFL. Their offense is ranked seventh overall, leading the league in rushing yards per game. Their defense is ranked fifth in total defense.

Both teams look statistically similar. The key to next Sunday's game will be the intangibles: Which team can get the ball to its playmakers, who steps up and when, and who wants it more.

For the Eagles, the team has a stoic confidence. They believe they can compete with the best of the best.

Now they have to prove they can.

Led by Dominating Defense, Philadelphia Eagles Roll into the Playoffs

Defense wins championships.

Or in the case of the Philadelphia Eagles, defense earned the team a playoff spot.

Led by seven-time Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins, the Eagles' defense has been on fire over the past month. They boast the best total defense in the NFC, and rank in the top five in both passing and rushing defense.

Both Dawkins and cornerback Asante Samuel made the Pro Bowl—the only selections coming out of Philadelphia. Dawkins also earned NFC Defensive Player of the Month honors for December.

The Eagles' season has been a roller coaster ride, with the low point coming against the Baltimore Ravens. For the first time in his life, McNabb was pulled from a game. Since then, the team has hit its stride.

In the month of December, the Eagles' defense only gave up 26 points, leading the team to a 3-1 stretch run. The team was rewarded with an improbable playoff berth and a game on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

"Our defense is gelling. I think we all feel that," strong safety Quintin Mikell said. "We're communicating and working well together. I think there is a high level of confidence here."

It is no secret that Super Bowl-winning teams have historically done it with a strong running game and dominant defense. The Giants of last season were the epitome of that philosophy.

If the Eagles are going to make it to Tampa Bay for the Super Bowl, the defense is going to have to play as well as it has been.

If the Eagles leave Minnesota with a win Sunday, they would head to the Meadowlands for a meeting with the Giants. The Eagles have already beaten the Giants on the road this season, but that was a different time. The Giants are free from the Plaxico Burress distraction, and should have running back Brandon Jacobs back healthy.

The players are not looking that far ahead, nor should they.

Minnesota is a talented, up-and-coming squad. Running back Adrian Peterson earned the rushing title in his second season, and the Vikings' defense ranks first in the league against the run.

"The Super Bowl seems so far away when you start the season," said linebacker Stewart Bradley. "Now there are 12 teams playing. It's exciting, for sure. You have to guard against not playing the game on Tuesday or Wednesday."

The Eagles are confident. They are playing well and are the favorites to win on Sunday. But, if the Eagles are going to make a run, Dawkins, Mikell, Bradley, and the rest of the white-hot Philly defense will have to lead the way.

The NFL's Biggest Surprises in 2008

For football fans, 2008 has been a wild year.

After the Giants knocked off the mighty New England Patriots in Super Bowl XVII, many fans thought that the weirdness was over. That we, as a nation, would go back to the same league landscape we had seen for years.

Boy, were they wrong.

This has been a bizarre season. For proof, one only has to look at the emerging playoff picture. One of the best teams in the entire league, the Carolina Panthers, didn't make the playoffs last season. The Tennessee Titans went one-and-done last year.

The Falcons? They didn't even have a proper head coach this time last season.

Then there is the shift in power. For years, the Patriots, Colts and Chargers were near locks to make the postseason. Now the Colts, Super Bowl champs only two short years ago, didn't even win their division.

And the Pats and Chargers? Both are struggling simply to make the playoffs.

Then again, some things never change. Like the Lions. In an ever-changing league filled with salary caps and free agency, the Lions have been a model of consistency. Too bad they're consistently awful.

The year had its ups and downs. Take the Bills and Redskins, for example. Both teams started hot, but are now missing in action. Redskins' rookie head coach recently called himself "the worst coach in the league," and Bills coach Dick Jauron is likely going to be out of a job soon.

But in a season full of surprises, some things happened that none of us saw coming. From injured superstars and new coaches to impact rookies and surprise trades, this season has had arguably more intrigue than any in recent memory.

As we count the days until the New Year, now is the perfect time to reflect on what made this year in the National Football League so memorable.
Begin Slideshow

Philadelphia Eagles Control Their Own Destiny with Just Three Games to Go

The Philadelphia Eagles are doing it again.

Left for dead after a Week 12 thumping at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens, the Eagles are back in the thick of the playoff race.

Thanks to a balanced offense and improved play from the defense, the Eagles are on a two-game winning streak with three games left to play. For Eagles fans, the finale to this season is reminiscent of the 2006 season, when Jeff Garcia helped pilot the team to a 10-6 record and the playoffs.

Brian Dawkins agrees.

"I think the feeling is the same. The confidence level is the same. We are believing in what we can do as a unit," the All-Pro free safety said Thursday. "You have a confidence that when you step on the field, you should win that game."

That confidence is going to need to go a long way if this team wants to get to the playoffs.

Right now, with the unusual record of 7-5-1, the Birds largely control their own destiny. If the Falcons lose one of their last three games and the Eagles win out, the Eagles are in and McNabb will see the postseason for the first time since Super Bowl XXXIX.

Getting there won't be easy. Two of the three remaining games are within the division. The Birds must face Washington on the road and Dallas at home to finish out the year. This will be no small feat, as Philadelphia is only 1-3 in the division this season.

Oh yeah, and the Eagles play the Browns on Monday night. Or something.

The Eagles have a habit of playing their best ball in December. Since 2003, the Eagles are 17-7 in the final month of the season. To Dawkins, getting hot at the end of the season is all about character and confidence.

"The character we have in that locker room, that desire—that's something that Andy [Reid] always preaches about this time of year." Dawkins said. "This is where you separate yourself. We understand the significance of this time, also."

Playoff-Minded Eagles Gear Up For Monday Night

One month ago, if you thought the Philadelphia Eagles would be making a serious playoff run this season, you were either a homer or just not paying attention. Now, things are quite different. With three games to go, the Eagles are sitting at 7-5-1, and are largely in control of their own destiny.

If the Eagles can stay as hot as they were in their impressive 20-14 road win over the Giants, the 6th seed in the playoffs is theirs for the taking. In order to make the playoffs, the Birds would need to win their last three games, and hope for Atlanta to drop one.

This reality is not lost on the team. "We're in a position now where we have to win them all," said Brian Westbrook, who saw a career-high 39 touches Sunday. "We're going to take them one week at a time, but we have to win them all to get into the playoffs and we started today."

The team as a whole is getting hot at the right time. The Eagles' defense did not allow an offensive touchdown until late in the final quarter. The Giants lead the league in scoring offense.

Things are looking up for the heavily criticized offense. Donovan McNabb has come back into his own, thanks in large part to a larger reliance on the running game. "It was very productive for us today, when we had the run going," said McNabb after the game. "It opened up some things outside for us to pass the ball and get some guys involved."

Even the passing game has steadily become more reliable. The game at The Meadowlands featured quite a few screens and short plays, but they proved effective against a Giants defense that is ranked 6th in the league.

The Eagles begin their final three game run with a Monday night home game against the struggling Cleveland Browns.

From the outside looking in, Monday's game appears to be the easiest of the three games left. Regardless, head coach Andy Reid wants to make sure his players realize the importance of playing well. "They have to get in and see the film and watch it, and boy, that tells you the story," said Reid of Cleveland. "They have a lot of talent on their team."

The Browns have the talent, but are having trouble getting the most of it. Many picked the Browns to win the AFC North after finishing 10-6 last season, but injuries and inconsistent play have earned the team a 4-9 record.

The Browns rank in the bottom of the league in nearly every major category. They rank 27th in total defense, giving up nearly 360 yards per game this season. The one bright spot has been turnovers. The Browns have 19 interceptions on the season, which is a +6 turnover differential. Cleveland will need to continue that if they want to have a shot at beating the Eagles.

Their offense hasn't fared much better. It ranks 28th in total offense, and 27th in total scoring. Following injuries to Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, Cleveland has been forced to start Ken Dorsey. He is a capable game manager who will need his star players like Braylon Edwards to step up for him.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are in the top ten on both sides of the ball. The Eagles defense, which has been getting better play from its young players lately, gives up the fourth fewest yards in the league, and is second in sacks. The resurgent Eagles offense ranks 6th in total points scored, and 5th in passing yards per game.

Still, the Eagles have struggled with trap games in recent memory. After a close loss against the Giants in Week 10, the Eagles tied the AFC's worst team--the Cincinnati Bengals, in a 13-13 stinkfest. So far this season, the Eagles are 1-2 against teams in the AFC North, with their only win against the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers.

The game is winnable, but only if the Eagles focus and keep their eyes on the prize. Said Eagles radio host and local icon Merrill Reese, "They have got to look at Cleveland like they look at the Cowboys or the Giants."

Philadelphia Eagles' Week Four Contest

Good evening, fellow Eagles writers!

Here is your Week Four contest question:

There is little doubt that Sunday's loss to the Bears was disheartening. With a streaking Redskins team coming to town Sunday, what are the Birds going to have to do to ensure they can get back on track—both for this game and the rest of the season?

Good luck with your articles, I can't wait to read them!

Donovan McNabb Heads Home as the Philadelphia Eagles Battle the Chicago Bears

Donovan McNabb and the Eagles (2-1) are gearing up for another primetime game as they head to Chicago to face the Bears (1-2) Sunday.

The Eagles are coming off of an impressive 15-6 win over the Steelers last Sunday. The Philadelphia defense recorded nine sacks and a safety. For his performance, Brian Dawkins was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

The win came at a price, though, as several of the Eagles' offensive playmakers were injured during the game.

McNabb, RB Brian Westbrook, FB Tony Hunt, and TE LJ Smith, all starters, were hurt in the game. All-Pro guard Shawn Andrews, who missed last week's game, is also questionable.

Westbrook, who had to leave Sunday's game on crutches, still feels like he may be able to play. "I have definitely gotten better since Sunday, so I have that hope that I can get out there and play," Westbrook said.

If the Eagles want to have success against the Bears, they get their chances. The once-heralded Chicago defense now ranks 28th against the pass. Last week, Buccaneers QB Brian Griese was 38 of 67 for 407 yards against the Bears in an overtime win.

The Philadelphia receivers, who have surprised even fans in Philly, are going to be called on to make plays, especially if Westbrook is not healthy.

Rookie DeSean Jackson has been impressive this season. He has two 100-yard games in his brief career and would have had a touchdown if not for a play in which he dropped the ball at the 1-yard line in celebration against Dallas.

"There are a lot of challenges for us on the offensive side," McNabb said. "You have to elevate your game to another level and make sure that you're doing your job correctly and everybody else will follow."

McNabb, a Chicago native, says that although he used to get excited about going back home, the feeling has lessened. "I don't look at it like I'm just so excited about going back home," McNabb said in his weekly press conference Wednesday. "I look at it as just another opportunity to, hopefully, get another win in the win column and get ready for the following week."

Eagles 'D' Dominates As The Birds Come Up Big

Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook may have missed time against the Steelers on Sunday, but it sure didn't matter much. The Eagles' defense dominated throughout and helped Philadelphia earn a 15-6 win Sunday.

Philadelphia's defense came up big with nine sacks and held the vaunted Pittsburgh offense to just 180 yards.

"Defensively, it was a phenomenal job," head coach Andy Reid said. "They were coming off a game they were disappointed in their performance. To rebound like that, I'm proud of them."

Thanks to constant pressure from the Eagles' front seven, Steelers' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was never able to find his rhythm. Six Eagles registered at least one sack over the course of the game.

Grasping to a 10-6 lead in the fourth quarter, the Eagles pressure got to Roethlisberger in the end zone, drawing an intentional grounding penalty which was enforced as a safety.

Philadelphia was coming off of a heartbreaking 41-37 loss to the Cowboys on Monday night, and few thought the Eagles would be able to get over the loss in time to win against a physical team Pittsburgh team.

Clearly, those doubters had not talked to Eagles' defensive end Juqua Parker.

"I got offended by a couple things, but I knew we were going to come back and bounce back after last week's game against Dallas." Parker said after the game. "I knew we had to come out and get the job done."

Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins was in vintage form, registering a sack and a forced fumble. Dawkins was criticized following a poor showing on Monday night against Dallas.

At 34, critics said Dawkins did not have enough left in him to play at the level the NFL has come to expect of him.

"I play the way I play," Dawkins said. "I don't know what a 34-year old is supposed to feel like or play like. I just know that I had to get to Ben, he was scrambling, and I had to make the play to do it."

While the defense was executing to near perfection, the same was not true for the Philadelphia offense.

The Eagles offense was unable to move down the field for the majority of the game. McNabb went 24 of 35 for 196 yards with a touchdown and an interception. During McNabb's absence, backup Kevin Kolb went two for three with an interception.

"We couldn't really get the ball down the field with the run game and then we had some breakdowns in pass protection." said veteran offensive tackle Tra Thomas. "There are a lot of things that we are going to have to correct, but we're glad that we hung in to get this win."

The offensive woes were not limited to the Eagles' side. The longest pass play of the entire game was a 21-yard hookup between Roethliberger and tight end Heath Miller.

"We didn't have all 11 guys on the same page." Steelers' receiver Hines Ward said. "They had our whole offense confused at times."

Still, the lone touchdown of the game belonged to the Eagles' backup runner Correll Buckhalter, whose dazzling 20-yard pass reception helped the Eagles pull away in the second quarter. With the pass, McNabb passed Ron Jaworski for first on the Eagles all-time touchdown list with 176 scores.

Brian Westbrook went out in the first quarter with an ankle injury and did not return. McNabb also took time out with a chest injury. Neither injury is expected to be serious, although Westbrook is scheduled to have a precautionary MRI on Monday.

The game was a classic old-school match between cross-state rivals.

"It was a slugfest." Eagles receiver Hank Baskett said. "We knew that this was a physical, physical team and we were going to have to come out because it was going to go down to the end. Thankfully we got the last punch in and we were able to give them a knockout blow and come out with the victory."

The Eagles will need to recover quickly. Next week the team travels to Chicago for a Sunday night match against a Bears team that is known for its punishing defense. Meanwhile, the Steelers go back home to face their division rival Baltimore Ravens.

Cowboys-Eagles: Monday Night Slugfest Reveals Top Contenders

You heard it here—the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles are the two best teams in the National Football Conference.

The NFC East has regained its title as the toughest division in football. If things continue, the division is likely to produce three playoff teams again this year.

Statistically, Dallas and Philly have two of the top three offenses in the league. The Eagles have scored a total of 75 points in two games, with the Cowboys close behind at 69 points.

Meanwhile, the Eagles lead the league in passing yards per game, as well as rushing defense.

And Dallas? Well, wide receiver Terrell Owens is second all-time in touchdown receptions. No. 1 is some guy named Jerry Rice.

So yeah, these two teams are pretty darn good.

In their Week One match, the Cowboys exposed the now-suspect Cleveland Browns in a 28-10 dismantling on the road. The Eagles tore apart the pitiful St. Louis Rams at home by a score of 38-3 before letting their scrubs finish out the game.

These lopsided opening-day games were the perfect backdrop for a Week Two Monday Night Football meeting between Dallas and Philadelphia.

For the first time in a while, the Eagles-Cowboys rivalry was exciting for more reasons than the drama between Owens and Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. Pundits believed the game would tell which team was for real, as opposed to being the beneficiary of an easy opening day game.

As it turns out, the answer is "both."

The Eagles' offense started slow, but tacked on 30 first-half points. Even the defense chipped in, recovering a Tony Romo fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

Dallas' scoring machine was once again prolific, as Romo threw for 312 yards and three scores.

Both teams also benefited from contributions from their highly-publicized rookie class. Dallas RB Felix Jones returned a kickoff 98 yards in the first quarter. He now leads all rookie kick returners with 267 yards in two games.

The Eagles' rookie wide receiver DeSean Jackson caught six passes for 110 yards. Jackson would have scored on a 60-yard pass, but he dropped the ball in celebration before crossing the goal line.

Jackson also became the first rookie since 1940 to have two consecutive 100-yard receiving games. He leads all rookies with 216 yards.

The game featured seven lead changes, and was the second-highest scoring Monday Night Football game in history. Appropriately, the game garnered record TV audiences.

Dallas now heads to Green Bay to face the Aaron Rodgers-led Pack, while Philly faces cross-state rival Pittsburgh.

Despite the loss, the Philly faithful have reason to be optimistic. McNabb is now two years removed from his devastating knee injury and looks like the Pro Bowl-caliber player of old. Although top receivers Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown have been out due to injury, the depth at wide receiver has proven more than capable.

In Dallas, fans are thinking championship. Last year's team was a disappointment, and this year's 'Boys are thinking championship or bust.

Both teams have seen their share of hardships recently. The Cowboys, even with Tony Romo at the helm, have not won a playoff game since the 1996 season.

Donovan McNabb has not seen the postseason since the Eagles' Super Bowl loss in 2004, when Owens made a miracle comeback in time to play in the big game.

Both teams know that if they want to win it all, they must focus on now. It's a long season, and both teams' futures look bright.

It's going to be an exciting season for two bitter foes that want to prove that this year, after years of heartbreak, they have what it takes to be Super.

Cowboys-Eagles: Tongue Lashings Begin As Teams Prepare for Monday Night

The war of words has already started for the marquee matchup of Week Two, as the Dallas Cowboys take on their bitter NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Not surprisingly, Adam "Don’t call me Pacman" Jones started the controversy Monday by downplaying the Eagles' offensive stats from Week One against the Rams. "They played the Rams, dude." Jones told reporters.

Philadelphia had a field day on Sunday against said St. Louis Rams, with a 38-3 spanking as the end result. Quarterback Donovan McNabb went 21-for-33 and threw for 361 yards and three scores.

Although both starting wide receivers Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis were out with injuries, three wideouts racked up over 100 receiving yards. Superstar running-back Brian Westbrook amassed 91 yards on the ground and scored both a rushing and receiving touchdown.

The Eagles, particularly McNabb, are being careful not to continue the smack talk. Last year, McNabb said that he felt like the road to the division title still went through Philadelphia. That week, the Cowboys embarrassed the Eagles at home, 38-17, and eventually won the NFC East for the first time since the Troy Aikman era.

This time, McNabb chose his words more carefully. "We're looking forward to it, but we won't look at it as a test to see where we're at," McNabb said. "At this particular time of the season, it's important that you try to master the fundamentals, to make sure the chemistry is where it's supposed to be."

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys are coming into the Monday night game with many pundits calling them the best team in the NFL. They easily disposed of Cleveland on Sunday, winning 28-10 over a lackluster Browns team.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was impressive Sunday, as he went 24-for-32, throwing for 320 yards and a touchdown.

Romo understands the hype surrounding the game but is keeping it in perspective. "For me, I just don’t think of [playing the Eagles] any differently." Romo said Wednesday. "It's just another game."

For the Eagles, shutting down the high-powered Cowboys offense is going to be a challenge. Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson is one of the best in the league at creating pressure on the quarterback, and this game should be no different.

Romo understands that the Eagles' defense is going to bring pressure. "They're a very disciplined chaos; they're very well coached."

Meanwhile, the Eagles may have their hands full with a Cowboys offense that features superstars Tony Romo and former Eagles receiver Terrell Owens.

"He's a pretty good player. If he's not the best, he's one of the best at his position, and when it's all said and done, that'll be how it is for, I think, history." Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid said of Owens. "He'll go down as one of the great wide receivers in this league, so you have to bring your 'A' game when you're playing against him."

This game expects to be a high-scoring contest against two teams that should make strong playoff pushes this season. Many in the sports world believe that the Cowboys will make it to the Super Bowl this year, but they are not the only ones enjoying good press. Sports Illustrated picked the Eagles to make it to the Super Bowl.

Over the last 10 games, the Eagles hold a narrow 6-4 lead in the series against the Cowboys.

Last season the two teams split the series, each team winning on the road.

The last time the teams met, Brian Westbrook sealed the Eagles' victory by forgoing a touchdown and taking a knee at the one-yard line, preserving a 10-6 victory in Dallas.

Chad Ocho Cinco Is an Idiot, and Other News and Notes from the NFL: Week One

Gentlemen, start your seasons!

That's right, folks. Yesterday's snoozefest between the Giants and Redskins means that the 2008 NFL season is finally upon us!

There were a lot of happenings this week, so let's get right down to business.

Bye, Bye, Daunte

In a shocking move, former Vikings, Dolphins, and Raiders (oh my!) QB Daunte Culpepper announced his retirement yesterday...in an email to NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

A first-round pick in the much-hyped quarterback class of 1999, Daunte was a force to be reckoned with in his earlier days. He and superstar WR Randy Moss were a deadly duo, but they were never able to get far in the playoffs.

Moss, of course, signed with some team last year that went on to break some record, only to lose to the freakin' Giants in the Super Bowl.

Culpepper was never able to regain his Pro Bowl-caliber mojo after getting the axe in Minnesota. He was signed by the Dolphins in 2006, but injuries kept him from seeing much time. He was unceremoniously cut the next year, and he then was part of Oakland's quarterback committee last season.

He couldn't find a team this time around, so he decided to hang it up instead of wait it out.

Daunte will be missed, and the game will probably be the same without him.

(Oh, and if you were wondering: The only QB taken in the first round of the 1999 draft who is still employed? That's the Eagles' signal caller Donovan McNabb, taken second overall. The '99 draft, of course, featured such superstars as Akili Smith and Tim Couch.)

Burress Buried in Cash

Giants wideout Plaxico Burress just got paid.

One of the stars of Super Bowl XLII, Burress had been lobbying for a new contract during the offseason. His shiny new five-year, $30 million contract was announced just before kickoff last night. Burress proved he was worth the money by catching 10 balls for 133 yards.

This contract probably makes him the highest-paid player to wear No. 17.

Notes from NY

The opening game had the superstars and the glamour of a typical opening game, but there was one thing noticeably missing—a good football game.

The Giants scored the only touchdown of the night on their first possession, and neither team exactly impressed.

The 'Skins are looking like the worst team in the NFC East right now, which would probably make them the best team in the NFC West, if, y'know, our nation's capital happened to be on the other side of the country. Or something.

Anyway, both teams were sluggish in their execution, but it's early. As for their title defense season, Giants fans can't exactly gripe about a 1-0 start.

Introducing the New Chad John—I mean, Ocho Cinco.

Chad Johnson has done it, people. He has found a way to be more obnoxious than ever...without opening his mouth.

In the most bizarre story of the offseason, Bengals WR Chad Johnson officially changed his last name to Ocho Cinco.

Seriously, Chad?

It's bad enough that he had an off year last season, and that he made all kinds of bad press over the summer. Now he has legally changed his last name so that he can have "Ocho Cinco" on his jersey. Come on, man!

What did the NFL say about this?

"It's his legal surname."

Wow.

That's right, kids! Get your Chad Ocho Cinco jerseys today!

Here's my question to all of you out there: If Ocho Cinco has another bad year, do you think the Bengals will regret not running off into the night with Washington's first-round pick?

Patrick's Fearless Friday Picks

One game is in the books, so now it's time to highlight some select games over the weekend.

Jets at Dolphins

CBS, 1 PM EDT

The only reason anyone not from New York or Florida would even consider watching this travesty of a matchup is for Brett Favre. Both teams were embarrassing last year, and this year figures to be no different.

Jets fans say that they've done enough during the offseason to make a playoff push, but I'm not convinced. Meanwhile, the Dolphins have made a serious case for being the worst team in football.

New head coach—I mean—Vice President Bill Parcells has exported half of the '06/'07 Cowboys roster to Miami. He even brought in former Jets QB Chad Pennington, who will get the starting nod Sunday.

This game might be fun for a quarter or two, but I seriously doubt it will be anything worth writing home about.

Still, I like the Jets on the road over the 'Fins.

Tampa at New Orleans

FOX, 1 PM EDT

The race for the NFC South crown is always fun to watch. These teams go at each other's throats every time they play, and this game should be no different.

Last year was a head-scratcher for 'Gnawlens. After making it to the NFC Title game in '06, the team couldn't get on a roll early and missed the playoffs. Injuries to RBs Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister didn't make things any easier.

Meanwhile, the Bucs, led by journeyman QB Jeff Garcia, enjoyed a 9-7 season. Head Coach Jon Gruden (and his quarterback collection) made it to the playoffs before being knocked out by the eventual Super Bowl-winning G-Men.

The Saints' funkadelic home-field advantage should kick in for the opener, especially after Hurricane Gustav nearly evacuated the stadium. I like 'em to start the new season strong.

St. Louis at Philadelphia

FOX, 1 PM EDT

Philadelphia rookie WR DeSean Jackson is likely to get the first start of his career against a St. Louis team that, frankly, is a big question mark. This game features two of the NFL's best backs, with the Eagles' Brian Westbrook and the Rams' Steven Jackson.

Despite going 3-13 last season, the Rams have the potential to make some noise in the absurdly weak NFC West. QB Marc Bulger is one of the best in the NFC, and he has some serious weapons at his disposal. The offensive line is slightly more intact this season, and the defense is improved.

Still, it's going to be a big test against a speedy Eagles defense. The Birds' new squad is led by Rich Uncle Penneybags (a.k.a. Asante Samuel), who was signed to major dollars this offseason.

Philadelphia's offense has greatly improved as well, although they will likely be missing starting wide receiver Kevin Curtis.

Interesting side note: Curtis is a former Ram.

I frankly don't see any way the Rams can pull this one off, barring another Week One of muffed punts for Philly. I like the Eagles at home.

Chicago at Indianapolis

NBC, 8:15 PM EDT

Ah, Super Bowl rematches. They usually make for good watching. As for this rematch of Super Bowl XL? Eh...we'll see.

Chicago has fallen pretty far since 2006. They've lost both starting wideouts, as well both running backs—Thomas Jones to free agency and Cedric Benson because he liked to booze it up while operating a watercraft.

Still, the vaunted Bears D is still in tact, and it will probably carry the team's sad excuse for an offense all season.

The Colts may be losing some of their Super shimmer, but they're still dangerous, as long as Peyton Manning is behind center. He sat out most of the preseason, nursing his bursa sac (doesn't that just sound gross?).

He'll be ready for Week One, and so will the Bears' defense. It's a classic match between a great offense and a great defense. Still, it would be insane to bet against the Colts, so I'm not going to.

Just How Good Will the Philadelphia Eagles' Defense Be?

If the free-agent signings in recent months have shown Eagles fans anything, it is that the team is looking for better playmakers on defense.

Sure, the offense got an upgrade in the draft with the likes of DeSean Jackson, but defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has made the headlines with the signing of former New England Pro Bowler, Asante Samuel.

Add to that the singing of defensive end Chris Clemmons, and the Eagles have the makings of a dominant defense.

But will it happen?

In recent years, the Eagles' defense has been known as a dominant unit, filled with defensive stars. Players like free safety Brian Dawkins and middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, who have 10 Pro Bowl appearances between them, struck fear into the hearts of opposing teams.

Those days seem like a distant memory. After a significant drop in production, Trotter was unceremoniously dumped from the team in the middle of last year's preseason.

After his twins were born prematurely, family man Dawkins wisely put family first, choosing to taking care of his children. Unfortunately, the time away from the gym resulted in one of his worst years to date in 2007.

But things are looking brighter for the defense in 2008.

After a seemingly never-ending carousel of linebackers, head coach Andy Reid has a young starting corps that he believes in.

The group is anchored in the middle by second-year man Stewart Bradley, a third-round pick last season. In his first start against New Orleans, Bradley showed flashes, as he recorded a sack and an interception.

Weak-side linebacker Omar Gaither, with three years of experience under his belt, is the ranking veteran of the starting linebackers. Gaither showed the team enough to earn a starting role down the stretch in 2006. Because of the improved play of the defense, the Jeff Garcia-led Eagles made the playoffs.

Last season, Gaither was moved to middle linebacker, but the Eagles brass feel he is better served on the outside.

Finally, Chris Gocong is the wild card of the group. A converted defensive end, Gocong has the ability to be a quality pass-rusher. Although drafted the same year as Gaither, Gocong found himself on IR during his rookie campaign.

Being able to play together was very important for the new linebacker team, Gocong said. "As we play together more, we're going to bond and play well off each other."

Ultimately, the linebackers will make or break the Eagles' defense next season. If the unit can play consistently and make plays, the corps could be one of the strengths of the defense. If they struggle, Eagles fans can expect yet another different group of 'backers for the following season.

If the Eagles have an elite unit on the team, it would unquestionably be the secondary.

With the signing of Asante Samuel, the Eagles now have two Pro Bowl corners, with Lito Sheppard and Asante, and a corner in Sheldon Brown who seems to always be on the cusp of a breakout season.

After signing Samuel, Andy Reid made it clear that Sheppard's starting position had a new owner.

"I just feel like I'm at home. Everyone's been welcoming me, and it's been wonderful," Samuel said on his first day of training in Philadelphia. "I'm going to keep working hard, and keep chopping the wood."

Although Sheppard is unhappy with his contract and status with the team, he has kept his grievance out of the media.

If both sides can come to an agreement, a happy Sheppard could go a long way to having a group of corners that could give even Denver's lauded corps a run for their money.

The safety positions are a little more interesting.

Perennial All-Pro Dawkins says he's back to form, and is ready to get the season underway. "This year, my priorities are in a different place. Last year, {we} didn't capitalize defensively...we'll get better," he said.

Meanwhile, new starting strong safety, Quentin Mikell, will be playing his first full season as a starter in 2008. A special-teams ace, Mikell was given the green light after injuries to former starter Sean Considine. The team liked what they saw, and gave the job to Mikell, even after Considine's return.

If Dawkins is right about being back in shape, the Eagles secondary could be the source of some big plays next season. But if Sheppard's unhappiness continues, and players like Samuel cannot live up to lofty expectations, the secondary might turn from a strength to a weakness in the blink of an eye.

Andy Reid is a firm believer that battles are won in the trenches. He has made that abundantly clear with his drafting philosophy, taking more linemen in the first round than any other position in his tenure.

This year's defensive line has some serious questions surrounding it, but also reason for great optimism.

The Eagles finally cut ties with underperforming Jevon Kearse at the start of free agency. In his place, the team signed former Oakland defensive end Chris Clemons.

Jim Johnson will use his defensive lineman in a slightly unusual way this season. Instead of having concrete starters, he will constantly rotate out players, attacking offenses in "waves" with fresh players.

The line is anchored by two first-round defensive tackles. Mike Patterson has been unspectacular, but solid, and Broderick Bunkley figures to have a breakout year.

The star of the show is unquestionably Pro-Bowl end Trent Cole. His total of 12.5 sacks last season was one of the tops in the NFC.

On the other side of the line, however, questions remain. There is no clear-cut starter, and none of the players are at the level of Cole.

It will be up to the players themselves to make the whole better than the sum of its parts, if they want to be able to put pressure on opposing offenses.

The Eagles defense has more questions than answers. It is a young defense that, on the surface, has a great deal of talent. If the unit can play better than last season, it will be a top-10 defense in the NFL.

If not, well, the Eagles may be watching the playoffs from home again.

Fearless NFL Predictions: NFC East

Ah, the NFC.

Sure, the AFC might have the most recognizable teams and faces in the modern NFL. Brady, Peyton Manning, LT, and Vince Young all call the American Football Conference home. But there is one thing the NFC has that the AFC doesn't.

Competition.

The AFC South is considered by many to be the most stacked division in the NFL. But what about the other three divisions?

The AFC East will easily be the Patriots until the end of the Brady era. It would be a shock not to see the Chargers do anything but clean up in the AFC West. What about the AFC North? The Steelers/Browns race will be worth watching, but that’s about it.

NFC East

Compare those divisions to the jewel of the Nation Football Conference: the NFC East. Where else can you find four playoff-caliber teams in one division? Over the past four seasons, the Giants, Cowboys, and Eagles have each captured the division crown.

With that, here are my fearless predictions for the "beasts in the East."

Dallas Cowboys

If the Cowboys don't scare you to win the entire NFC, you haven't been paying attention.

The Cowboys were an elite team in 2007, regardless of conference. Their points scored ranked third behind the Packers and the mighty 18-1 Patriots.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys defense may be one of the better units in the NFC. Led by safety Roy Williams, the Cowboys ranked ninth in total defense in the league last season, and fourth in the NFC. The addition of Jenkins and cornerback/return specialist Adam 'Pacman' Jones should help improve an aging secondary.

With two first-round picks in the 2008 Draft, the Cowboys were able to address two needs. First, Arkansas running back Felix Jones will combine with Marion Barber to create a potent one-two punch for the team's ground game. Secondly, USF's Mike Jenkins will help shore up a secondary that ranked 13th against the pass in 2007.

Really, the Cowboys are a team with very few holes. Tony Romo is a Pro Bowl quarterback, and mercurial receiver Terrell Owens, who signed a three-year contract extension earlier in the week, had a great season in 2007, racking up 1,355 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Still, the team has not been able to get over the playoff hump since Troy Aikman was the team's signal caller.

If the Cowboys want any chance of winning their first playoff game in a decade, quarterback Tony Romo is going to have to be the one to get the 'Boys there. Romo is 0-2 in the playoffs, with nearly two years of starting experience under his belt.

How the Cowboys bounce back from a disappointing finish to their 2007 campaign will be worth watching. Tony Romo turned heads last month when he tried to qualify for the U.S. Open. When he did not qualify, he said, "I played nine holes last week, and tried to get in game shape, but obviously that wasn't enough it comes and goes."

The Cowboys have nearly all the pieces in place for a real Super Bowl run in 2008. If they can repeat their success from last season, a division win and a first-round bye are easily obtainable.

Patrick's Fearless Prediction: 12-4, first in the NFC East

Philadelphia Eagles

The offseason has been an unusual one for the Eagles. At season's end, McNabb wrote an article for YardBarker.com, saying, "Now that the season is over and we are concentrating on 2008, I hope we are able to secure some playmakers in all three phases of the game."

Many on the team echoed his sentiments, including running back Brian Westbrook and safety Brian Dawkins.

After signing free agent cornerback Asante Samuel in the wee hours of free agency, head coach Andy Reid and company also attempted to add a veteran receiver to the team. In fact, the Eagles very nearly wooed Randy Moss away from Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.

When Plan A failed, the team attempted to trade for the Cardinals' Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, the Lions' Roy Williams, and the Bengals' Chad Johnson. None panned out, so the Eagles resorted to the draft.

Cal's explosive DeSean Jackson will help to improve a lousy special-teams unit that was one of the worst in the league in 2007. Asante Samuel should help the Eagles force turnovers in 2008.

The Eagles ranked dead last in interceptions last season with 11. Samuel had six by himself in 2007.

The Eagles finished with a disappointing 8-8 mark last season, last in the NFC East. They were also the only team from the division not to make the playoffs.

The Philly faithful have been tortured as of late. Since the team's Super run in 2004, the Birds have missed the playoffs twice. In 2006, the team made it to the playoffs with the help of journeyman quarterback Jeff Garcia and the running game of Westbrook.

In order for the Eagles to make the playoffs in 2008, the offense has to get over its red-zone slump. Having McNabb all the way back from knee surgery will help, as well as having franchise tight end L.J. Smith back.

The defense is young and fast, and with coordinator Jim Johnson's rotation of linemen, the defense should improve beyond its top-10 standing in the NFL from last season.

As always, the Eagles' season will rest on the shoulders of McNabb. If he can stay healthy and play consistently, the Eagles should be able to make the playoffs. If not, the Eagles might be glad they have two first-round picks for next year's draft.

Patrick's Fearless Prediction: 10-6, second in the NFC East

New York Giants

Let's take a moment to reflect on the Giants' Super run of 2007.

The Giants suffered through a tumultuous 2006 campaign in which the team's franchise running back retired, and the locker room nearly fell apart en route to an 8-8 finish.

Few thought the Giants would be able to stay together as a team in 2007, let alone win enough games to make the playoffs.

A Super Bowl win? Forget it.

Now, 2006 seems like a lifetime ago. Head coach Tom Coughlin, who was thought to be out the door at the end of 2006, has a new, long-term contract. Heavily criticized quarterback Eli Manning now claims the title of Super Bowl XLII MVP.

A lot can change in a year.

What remains to be seen is what the team will do for an encore. Expectations will be higher than ever in New York. After an emotional playoff ride, will the Giants suffer the Super Bowl hangover, much like the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers?

The Giants will not have an easy road, playing in the hyper-competitive NFC East. However, the most difficult non-conference team Big Blue has to play will likely either be Pittsburgh or Cleveland. Not bad.

Another key to the Giants' success in 2008 will be how the team plays after losing key starters. After losing safety Gibril Wilson to the Raiders, the team drafted Miami's Kenny Philips as a replacement.

Add to that the fact that for a second straight year, future Hall of Fame defensive end Michael Strahan is considering retirement. With a ring on his finger, he may be less inclined to return.

The offense will need to continue the success it had in the postseason if they hope to compete in 2008. The running-back committee led by Brandon Jacobs was a formidable threat in the postseason, rushing for 405 yards.

Eli Manning turned it on in the playoffs, completing 72 of 119 passes for six touchdowns and one interception. Still, questions will linger about whether he can continue his success.

In the end, the Giants have as good a shot as any team in the NFC in 2008. Whether they can go deep into the playoffs remains to be seen, but the boys in blue now know what it takes to go all the way.

Patrick's Fearless Prediction: 9-7, third in the NFC East

Washington Redskins

The Redskins are the wild card in the East.

The 'Skins have a new head coach in Jim Zorn, as well as a new offensive and defensive coordinator. Many will argue that it is a similar situation to the Chargers of last year, and that it shouldn't hinder the team's success for 2008.

Then again, the Redskins aren't the Chargers. Not even close.

That isn't to say it's all doom and gloom in our nation's capital. New head coach Zorn, who was previously the quarterback coach in Seattle, should do a fine job helping quarterback Jason Campbell improve his game.

In 13 games, Campbell threw 12 touchdowns to 11 picks before going down. In his place, veteran quarterback Todd Collins led the team to the playoffs. Collins' five touchdowns and zero interceptions made many fans call for him to be the starter for 2008.

Something will have to happen at the quarterback position for the team to be successful next season. The Redskins were mediocre on offense in 2008, ranking 15th in total offense.

To fit his new West Coast Offense, Zorn made the controversial decision to trade out of the first round, and draft two wide receivers and a tight end in the second round.

The Redskins should have their receiving corps of the future, but the team's defense was largely ignored. Still, the Washington defense ranked eighth overall, one above Dallas and two above Philly.

For the Redskins, the team's success, like most teams, will fall on the shoulders of Jason Campbell. His progression must be Eli Manning-like in order for the team to do any kind of damage in the playoffs—assuming they can get that far.

In any other division in the NFC, the Redskins would be a lock for the playoffs. In the East, it remains to be seen. Of all the teams, though, their outlook is the bleakest.

Patrick's Fearless Prediction: 9-7, fourth in the NFC East

Eagles News and Notes: It's Always Busy In Philadelphia

It's been an interesting week in Philadelphia. Three stories, each with different impacts for the team, made headlines.

Sheppard to Play Wide Receiver? It's Not THAT Crazy…

Earlier in the week, ESPN reported that cornerback Lito Sheppard would be used in certain offensive packages as a wide receiver. According to the news outlet, Sheppard has been lobbying for this for years.

This may seem unusual at first, but it makes sense for several reasons. First and foremost, it is a step to keep Sheppard happy.

At the end of the season, the two-time Pro Bowler began grumbling about his contract situation. After the Eagles signed former Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel in free agency, Sheppard was demoted from his right cornerback position. It seemed that Sheppard was all but gone.

After the dust from the draft settled, the Eagles still had Sheppard on the roster, which is not exactly a bad thing. With Samuel and Sheppard starting, the Eagles have arguably the best cornerback tandem in the NFL.

Secondly, allowing Sheppard to play offense will bring even more speed to an offense that is already looking very fast.

The Eagles picked up two speedsters on draft weekend. First, the Eagles drafted Cal's DeSean Jackson in the second round. While quite small by NFL standards (he insists he is six feet and 175 pounds,) Jackson makes up for his size with raw speed.

The Eagles then made a trade for Lorenzo Booker, the former Dolphins' running back. Booker was brought in to spell Westbrook, as well as to provide matchup problems when both backs are on the field at the same time.

Adding Sheppard to the mix should create headaches for defensive coordinators. Besides, it is always worth trying to keep your Pro Bowl corners happy.

Jason Taylor: Insert Dancing With the Stars Pun Here

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network has reported that the Eagles are one of five teams interested in acquiring Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor.

The other four teams are Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Dallas, and San Diego.

The Dolphins have been playing hardball with Taylor since his decision to skip the offseason workouts in Miami to join ABC's Dancing With the Stars. New head coach Tony Sparano has all but indicated that Taylor is not in the Dolphins' plans for 2008.

"I know that Jason is not going to be in any minicamps, and I know that right now Jason is not going to be at training camp." Sparano said.

The Taylor-to-Philadelphia scenario is an interesting one for several reasons.

At 33, many teams question whether Taylor truly wants to play football. His participation on Dancing does little to silence these fears.

The Eagles are famous for cutting veteran players who have passed their prime. Jeremiah Trotter, Takeo Spikes, and Jevon Kearse are all prime examples of players the Eagles' front office has let walk in the last two years.

Of the three players, only Kearse is currently employed.

However, Taylor has had a series of impressive seasons recently. He was named Defensive Player of the Year for 2006, and racked up 11 sacks last season.

Also, it is no secret that Andy Reid loves linemen. Over the last nine seasons, the Eagles have drafted a lineman with the top pick five times. Of them, only Jerome McDougle has failed to catch on with the team in some capacity.

The situation is one worth watching. Taylor has said he is open to a trade, although he denies reports that his camp asked for one from the Dolphins.

Regardless, minicamps begin in Miami on Friday. Both sides have said Taylor will not be reporting. It remains to be seen what will happen instead.

Ready to Go: Eagles Sign Rookie Demps

The Eagles took a positive step in the right direction this week, signing rookie safety Quentin Demps to a four year deal. Terms of the deal are not yet available.

The rookie out of Texas El-Paso was known in college as a ballhawk, collecting more interceptions than any other player in his draft class.

Demps is the likely successor to All Pro free safety Brian Dawkins, who will likely hang up his pads within the next two seasons. Despite expectations, Demps is trying to stay true to himself. "Brian Dawkins is one of the best safeties ever," Demps said. "I'm a rookie trying to make the team."

The rookie will also be competing on special teams for the kickoff returner position. In all likelihood, it will come down to Demps or fellow rookie DeSean Jackson.

Five Teams to Watch in the NFC for 2008

For the past few years, there has been little doubt with conference in the NFL was superior. The AFC's most consistently elite teams are the Patriots, Colts, and Chargers—while the NFC boasts the Eagles, Seahawks, and Panthers. Of those three NFC teams, only one made the playoffs last year.

Ouch.

However, the Giants' Super Bowl win over the Patriots in February has brought a sudden legitimacy to the NFC. Not since the Buccaneers' elite defensive squad of 2002 has the team that hoisted the George Halas Trophy also won the Lombardi Trophy in the same season.

With that in mind, here are five teams to watch in the NFC:

New York Giants

Give the champs their due.

The Giants suffered through a tumultuous 2006 campaign in which the team's franchise running back retired and the locker room nearly fell apart en route to an 8-8 finish.

With a Super Bowl ring on his finger, he may be less inclined to return.

The offense will need to continue the success it had in the postseason if they hope to compete in 2008. The running back committee led by Brandon Jacobs was a formidable threat in the postseason, rushing for 405 yards in the playoffs.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings were one of the most fun teams to watch in 2008. Running back Adrian Peterson stole the show in Minnesota, rushing for 1341 yards with 12 scores, all in his rookie season. For his efforts, he was elected to the Pro Bowl, ahead of star running backs Brian Westbrook and Marion Barber.

With Peterson and veteran runner Chester Taylor, the Vikings have what is quite possibly the best rushing tandem in the league. The addition of former Bears' wide receiver Bernard Berrian via free agency should help the progression of third-year quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.

The Vikings also greatly improved their defense by adding All Pro defensive end Jared Allen. Allen led the NFL in sacks in 2007 with 15.5, and should help improve an already stout defense. "We should have a good shot to win the NFC North division," said defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. "Anytime your ownership is willing to do what Mr. Wilf did to acquire Jared Allen, it makes you glad to be a member of the Vikings."

Another benefit for the Vikings is their division. With Green Bay facing its first season without Brett Favre since Bill Clinton was elected, and the Bears going nowhere without a legitimate quarterback, the NFC North is up for grabs. A division crown and a playoff birth are within sight for the Vikes.

The fate of the team may ultimately lie in the hands of quarterback Tarvaris Jackson. His 2007 season was unimpressive. jackson finished with a 70.8 passer rating, throwing 12 picks to just nine scores. The additions to the offense, as well as the strength of the running game should help Jackson. Without at least the threat of a passing game, though, the Vikings may not make it very far.

Dallas Cowboys

Tony, Tony, Tony.

If the Cowboys want any chance of winning their first playoff game in a decade, quarterback Tony Romo is going to have to be the one to get the Boys there. Romo is 0-2 in the playoffs with nearly two years of starting experience under his belt.

The Cowboys were an elite team in 2007, regardless of conference. They ranked third in points scored, behind the Packers and the mighty 18-1 Patriots. Still, the team has not been able to get over the first-round hump since Troy Aikman was the team's signal caller.

With two first-round picks in the 2008 Draft, the Cowboys were able to address two needs. First, Arkansas running back Felix Jones will combine with Marion Barber to create a potent 1-2 punch for the team's ground game. Secondly, USF's Mike Jenkins will help shore up a secondary that ranked 13th against the pass in 2007.

Really, the Cowboys are a team with very few holes. Tony Romo is a Pro Bowl quarterback, and mercurial receiver Terrell Owens had a great season in 2007, racking up 1355 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys defense may be one of the better units in the NFC. Led by safety Roy Williams, the Cowboys ranked ninth in total defense in the league last season, and fourth in the NFC.

How the Cowboys bounce back from a disappointing finish to their 2007 campaign will be worth watching. Tony Romo turned heads this month when he tried to qualify for the U.S. Open. When he did not qualify, he said, "I played nine holes last week, and tried to get in game shape, but obviously that wasn't enough...it comes and goes."

The Cowboys have nearly all the pieces in place for a real Super Bowl run in 2008. If they can repeat their success from last season, a division win and a first-round bye are easily obtainable.

Philadelphia Eagles

There is one name Eagles fans can't seem to say enough these days. No, it's not that of their quarterback, Donovan McNabb. No, it's not Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook, either.

It's Cal's DeSean Jackson.

The Eagles selected Jackson with the 49th overall pick in the draft last month. His electrifying speed as a punt returner and as a receiver has fans in Philly buzzing.

The offseason has been an unusual one for the Eagles. At season's end, McNabb wrote an article for YardBarker.com, saying, "Now that the season is over and we are concentrating on 2008, I hope we are able to secure some playmakers in all three phases of the game." Many on the team echoed his sentiments, including Westbrook and safety Brian Dawkins.

Jackson will help to improve a lousy special teams unit which was one of the worst in the league in 2007. Asante Samuel should help the Eagles force turnovers in 2008. The Eagles ranked dead last in interceptions last season with 11. Samuel had 6 by himself in 2007.

The Eagles finished with a disappointing 8-8 mark last season, last in the NFC East. They were also the only team from the division not to make the playoffs.

The Philly faithful have been tortured as of late. Since the team's Super Bowl run in 2004, the Birds have missed the playoffs twice. In 2006, the team made it to the playoffs with the help of journeyman quarterback Jeff Garcia and the running game of Westbrook.

In order for the Eagles to make the playoffs in 2008, the offense has to get over its red zone slump. Having McNabb all the way back from knee surgery will help, as well as having franchise tight end LJ Smith back.

The defense is young and fast, and with coordinator Jim Johnson's rotation of lineman, the defense should improve beyond its top 10 standing in the NFL from last season.

As always, the Eagles' season will rest on the shoulders of McNabb. If he can stay healthy and play consistently, the Eagles should be able to make the playoffs. If not, the Eagles might be glad they have two first-round picks for next year's draft.

Green Bay Packers

It is an unusual time in Green Bay.

Sainted quarterback Brett Favre is gone, and in his place, Aaron Rodgers looks to lead one of the NFC's top teams to playoff glory once again.

Favre's retirement in the offseason was a shock to the Pack faithful. To many, the success Green Bay had in 2007 was a sure indicator that the face of the franchise would suit up for another year.

Now, the Packers have gone from one of the most complete teams in the NFC to a great unknown. The Pack's tremendous run in 2007 got them all the way to the NFC Championship game, where they were defeated at home in overtime, 23-20.

Still, en route to a 13-3 finish and a first-round bye, the team's young upstarts, such as wide receiver Greg Jennings and running back Ryan Grant, gave fans plenty to be excited about.

The defense of Green Bay was also a surprise to many. Ranked 11th overall, the Packers were stout against the run and pass, with top 15 rankings for both.

In just one season, the NFC North has gotten much more competitive. The Bears went to the Super Bowl in 2006, but struggled last season. The Vikings nearly missed the playoffs. The Lions are slowly improving with an explosive offense, but don't have much defensively.

The Packers also brought in insurance at the quarterback position by drafting Louisville's Brian Brohm in the second round. Still, the Green Bay brass maintains the job is Rogers' to lose. "Aaron's fine," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "He knows how we feel about him, he knows what his role is on our football team, and he'll be given every opportunity to be successful here."

More than any other NFC club, the Packers will rely on the quarterback position to bring success in 2008. If Rogers or Brohm can return this team to the level it reached last season, the Pack just might be ready for a Super Bowl run. If not, even the NFC North crown might even be too lofty of a goal.

Kevin Curtis and The Little Offense That Might

No position on the Eagles' roster comes under more scrutiny than that of the wide receiver.

Since the departure of Terrell Owens, Eagles’ fans have been clamoring for a receiver of Owens' ability. Prayers were almost answered this offseason when the team nearly snagged Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, and Roy Williams.

The team also had the chance to sign former Denver receiver Javon Walker, as well as former Raider Jerry Porter. However, no new receivers ended up in Eagles’ green during the free agency spending frenzy.

It was not until the Draft that head coach Andy Reid and company snagged a receiver in Cal's electrifying DeSean Jackson.

The first mini camps have come and gone without any meaningful new additions to the position.

This begs the question: Can the Eagles make a Super Bowl run with these receivers?

Reid thinks so.

"We did a tremendous job statistically in just about every area," Reid said in a press conference last week. "We'll work very hard at [red zone production], and we'll be fine there."

The Eagles finished sixth in the NFL in yards for 2007, averaging 358.1 per game. When it came to total points, however, the Birds placed 17th with 336.

Both the Giants and Cowboys had more points than the Eagles last season.

The biggest factor in the 2008 Eagles' difficulty in the red zone was the absence of tight end LJ Smith. McNabb's favorite red zone target missed seven games last season with a series of nagging injuries.

It was the first time in his career he missed more than two games in a season.

"You want to have a tight end to find the mismatch [in the red zone]," Smith said, "For whatever reason, we couldn't get the job done last year. But hopefully I can kind of steer the ship straight, so to speak."

In addition to Smith, the Eagles’ offense is relying heavily on its veteran receiver Kevin Curtis. A free agent in 2007, Curtis had the first 1,000 yard season since Owens' tumultuous departure in 2005.

Gaining 1,000 yards in the first season in a difficult West Coast Offense is no small feat (no pun intended). Still, the receivers understand that they need to be more productive to get the team to the playoffs and beyond.

"I think he has the utmost confidence in our abilities." Fourth year receiver Reggie Brown said. "Well, I hope he does, because, I mean, we're who we got. We're the guys."

Of course, no offensive player in Philly is under more scrutiny than QB Donovan McNabb. For the first time in several seasons, the franchise quarterback does not have an injury to rehab this offseason.

At the end of the season, McNabb wrote on his blog that he hoped the team would add more firepower to the team, saying, "I hope we are able to secure some playmakers in all three phases of the game."

''I can't say I'm disappointed,'' McNabb said when asked about the Eagles offseason moves. "I know I have [Brian Westbrook] behind me, a good offensive line, and a good receiving corps. That's all you can ask.''

There is little doubt that Brian Westbrook is an elite running back. His 1,333 yards in 2007 were third best in the NFL last season.

While the majority of the Eagles’ receivers are less than six feet tall and are known more for their speed, the team may find that it needs a taller, heavier wideout to help move the chains.

Hank Baskett (6'4, 220) was a one-year wonder in 2006 but was a virtual non-factor last season.

Will the offseason moves, which focused more on defense, be enough to improve the offense? It remains to be seen.

One thing is for sure—in order for the Eagles to make a Super run in 2008, the offense has to be able to get over its red zone slump.

"You don't need a big-time receiver," Smith said in an interview. "People just have to stay healthy, and guys just have to know what they're doing and make plays consistently."

NFL Draft: An Unpredictable Day One for the Philadelphia Eagles

Once again, the draft was an unusual one for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles turned heads with their 19th overall pick when they traded it to the Carolina Panthers for a second and first round selection, as well as Carolina's first round pick in 2009.

When the team's next pick finally came at 43rd overall, head coach Andy Reid and company traded the pick for a 2nd and 4th round pick from the Vikings. At long last, the Eagles used the 49th overall pick to select defensive tackle Trevor Laws from Notre Dame.

The Eagles biggest headline maker came with the 49th overall pick when the team drafted Cal's receiver and return specialist DeSean Jackson.

"I feel like I have a lot to prove," Jackson said in press conference Sunday. "[E]veryone will get to see what the real DeSean Jackson is like."

There is little to debate about Jackson's ability. While at Cal, Jackson set a Pac-10 record with six punt return touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Trevor Laws figures to fill in to the defensive line rotation created by defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. Laws is expected to contribute as a solid reserve player to back up Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley.

"I'm ready to get back to finally play football again." said in an interview."I'm sick of running all these little sprints and drills. That's not football. I'm excited to get out there and put the helmet on and go to work."

NFL Trades: Lito Sheppard Visits Buccaneers, Deal Expected by Saturday

The long-awaited trade of Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard will almost certainly go down in the next few days.

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported Thursday that Sheppard, the Eagles' top corner, visited with the Buccaneers Wednesday. It is believed that a second-round pick and a player should be enough to pry him from Philadelphia's anxious grasp.

The Eagles have made no secret of their desire to trade Sheppard.

After signing top free agent Asante Samuel in February, Sheppard has become largely expendable. Sheppard wants a new contract despite having signed a deal paying him more than $12 million over the next three years.

The Buccaneers' second round choice is the 52nd overall in Saturday's draft. The Eagles covet bringing players in via the draft, and having two second round picks would bring the team's grand total for the weekend to 12.

Sheppard is the only player in NFL history to record two interception returns for touchdowns of over 100 yards. Both plays came against the Cowboys.

Involved in the package for Sheppard would also be a player from the Buccaneers. The questions is, who?

Most fans will want a wide receiver.

If the Eagles are unable to snag an elite playmaker draft weekend, either Joey Galloway or Michael Clayton would be a solid consolation prize.

Galloway, had 1,014 yards for six touchdowns in 2007 with Jeff Garcia and Luke McCown at the helm. However, at 34, there are serious questions about Galloway's longevity.

Clayton has been largely unimpressive in Tampa Bay. Since being drafted in 2002 by the Bucs, Clayton only has eight touchdowns - seven coming his rookie year.

Sheppard is not without his downside. The two-time Pro Bowler missed 14 games in the last three seasons with a series of nagging injuries.

Philadelphia Eagles to Target Veteran Receivers on Draft Week

The Philadelphia Eagles are making a push to add a veteran playmaker to their offense.

After the highly publicized pursuits of Larry Fitzgerald and Randy Moss, the Eagles still find themselves without an elite receiver. According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the Eagles will actively pursue Cincinnati's Chad Johnson, Detroit's Roy Williams, or Arizona's Anquan Boldin.

Trading for one of these three receivers won't be easy. All three organizations have publicly stated that their respective players are not available for trade.

In Cincinnati, the volatile and explosive Chad Johnson has been publicly asking for a trade since March. The Bengals are not listening and have repeatedly stated that their disgruntled star is not available.

The Redskins reportedly offered the Bengals up to two first round draft picks. One this year and a third round pick next year can escalate if Johnson hits performance escalators. Cincinnati allegedly refused the offer, and head coach Marvin Lewis denied the offer took place.

The Eagles, who rely heavily on the draft, are unlikely to make a similar offer to the Bengals.

Next on the Eagles' radar is Lions receiver Roy Williams. He is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has said that he will not return to the Lions in 2009.

Still, the Lions are hesitant to trade him. Head coach Rod Marinelli said, “He’s not going anywhere. No. There’s no way. Like I’ve said, I want to see [WRs Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson, the Lions' first round pick last year] playing together."

Still, the Eagles have a rare bargaining chip: Pro Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard, who was demoted after the signing of free agent Asante Samuel.

Sheppard is an elite corner when healthy, but he has only played one full season since being drafted by the Eagles’ 26th overall in 2002.

Detroit ranked 31st in the league against the pass in 2007, and Sheppard could greatly improve the Lions' secondary.

The most intriguing situation is Arizona's Anquan Boldin. Boldin is reportedly unhappy with his situation in Arizona and asked head coach Ken Wizenhunt for a trade Tuesday.

Boldin's teammate Larry Fitzgerald was rewarded with a four-year, $40 million contract this offseason. It is considerably less than the $8.25 million Boldin is slated to earn over the next three seasons.

The Cardinals ranked 28th against the pass in 2007 and are another team who could use Sheppard's services.

Interestingly, starting Arizona cornerback Rod Hood played for the Eagles as a nickel corner until the 2007 season when he signed with Arizona as a free agent.

Arizona has publicly stated that Boldin, like Fitzgerald earlier in the offseason, is not available for trade. Arizona general manager Rod Graves said Tuesday that he views Boldin as a core player for the Cardinals, and does not want to trade him.

The Eagles are not the only team interested in acquiring a new offensive playmaker. Both Washington and Dallas—NFC rivals of the Eagles—are interested in upgrading at the position as well.

Washington has made inquiries for both Johnson and Boldin and was denied on both occasions.

If the Eagles are going to obtain one of these receivers, it is most likely to occur Saturday during the NFL Draft. The Eagles own 11 picks in the draft and may be willing to package Sheppard with picks for a receiver.
