Long Summer Ahead for Dallas Mavericks

So, the 2007-2008 Dallas Mavericks season didn’t turn out the way they had anticipated it to. After a disappointing regular season record of 51-31 and an even more disappointing postseason appearance, everyone is left wondering what comes next.

Even more so since Head Coach Avery Johnson was fired on Wednesday after a first-round playoff loss to the New Orleans Hornets.

Left without a head coach and with eight players from the 15-player roster potentially being free agents, it should be interesting to see what the offseason holds for the Dallas Mavericks.

First on the agenda: hiring a new head coach with a vision to utilize each player’s strengths and open up the offense while still having a strong defense. Dallas needs a coach who will work with individual players and then combine talent with teamwork to create a hardworking, strong team.

Even Dallas’ strongest players feel that a change is needed, and that change could be in the form of trades. The future of many Mavericks players remains unclear, especially with free agents, a factor that leaves the Mavs even more lost.

The Mavs are at a point right now where changes definitely need to be made. The extent of the changes is uncertain, but for right now, they need a new head coach. Then they can face the rest of the team and make the changes to create a new, better, and stronger Dallas Mavericks for the 2008-2009 season.

Mark Cuban and the rest of the Dallas staff has a long summer ahead.
