Jets' Draft Remains Wide Open

Apparently somebody forgot to inform the faculty at Muhlenberg College that you are supposed to ease up on seniors the last few weeks of their college lives. Either way, I have been buried in work, which is why I have barely posted the past two weeks.

However, I have obviously been staying up to date on all the constant conflicting draft news about the Jets and the mini camp reports. Here are all my thoughts about mini camp and what the Jets will do this Saturday/Sunday:

1. Swaggalicious—I can't wait to watch Bart Scott lead the Jets defense next year. He epitomizes the new attitude brought in by Rex Ryan. The Jets may actually have a personality this year with a little on-the-field swagger, instead of being the Eric Mangini robots.

2. Relax on the QB news—Yes, it was encouraging that Kellen Clemens looked confident and did a good job running the offense during the third day of mini camp. However, let's not go crazy over seven-on-seven numbers in helmets and sweatpants. You have to appreciate the work the beat writers do tracking the stats, but nobody is winning a QB job by going 4-7 for 35 yards in no-equipment team drills.

3. I haven't heard anybody say anything negative about David Clowney in the past two years. Like most people, I love his potential, but you would be crazy to bank on a guy with one career catch to be a full-time starter.

4. It is refreshing to listen to a Rex Ryan press conference.

5. The Jets really seem to be stuck in no man's land at No. 17 in this year's draft. They need a receiver, but Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin are going to be gone. Any receiver after them will have major risks attached. They aren't getting good value with Darrius Heyward-Bey or Hakeem Nicks at No. 17, and Percy Harvin is too similar to Leon Washington, never mind his character concerns.

6. I believe the Jets do like Mark Sanchez, but there is no way they are trading any higher than No. 8 to get him. If he does fall there and they make a move for him, Sanchez better be able to beat out Clemens and Ratliff for the job.

7. One scenario that I keep hearing which I like for the Jets is the Browns or Redskins taking Sanchez and then trading either Jason Campbell or Brady Quinn to them. I don't know why Washington is so hell bent on getting a QB. Campbell is a good player, and I'd love to see him in green and white. Quinn isn't as proven yet, but he sure looked the part at times last year.

8. I can see the logic in drafting Brandon Pettigrew, but two tight ends in the first round in two years? C'mon now, not when Chansi Stuckey and Kellen Clemens are starters at receiver and quarterback right now. The Jets can find a blocking tight end in the middle rounds.

9. If Knowshon Moreno is on the board at No. 17, he will be the best player left which, according to Mike Tannenbaum, means the Jets will take him. If they do, it's time to start assembling a trade package involving Thomas Jones to get more picks or a wide receiver.

10. I still think the Jets are very much in the Anquan Boldin sweepstakes.

11. The Jets need offensive and defensive line depth in the later rounds...badly.

12. Unless the Jets trade back, they aren't taking Josh Freeman.

12. If I am trading up for one player, it is Jeremy Maclin. I would say Sanchez, but it doesn't look like he is getting out of the top five anymore.

13. My ideal scenario for the Jets? They trade back to very late in the first round, pick up another second-round pick, and then give Arizona a first and third for Anquan Boldin. They then use their two second-round picks on the top running back available (Donald Brown, Lesean McCoy) and the top defensive lineman available. On the second day, they find a blocking tight end, a backup offensive lineman, and take a shot on a late-round quarterback prospect.

14. The likely scenario for the Jets? If they stay put at No. 17, they will probably get to choose from Darrius Heyward-Bey, Josh Freeman, Brandon Pettigrew, Knowshon Moreno, and Percy Harvin. I don't know who they would lean toward in this scenario...it really depends on how much they like Kellen Clemens/Brett Ratliff and their opinion of how the Thomas Jones contract dispute is going to end.

15. I'd be thrilled if we found a way to get Jeremy Maclin or acquired Jason Campbell or Brady Quinn or Anquan Boldin.

16. I'd be happy if we get Mark Sanchez for the right price (not trading all our draft picks to move into the top five).

17. I'd understand and be satisfied if we got Brandon Pettigrew, Knowshon Moreno, or Percy Harvin.

18. I'd be worried if we got Josh Freeman or Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Breaking Down the 2009-2010 New York Jets' Schedule

The NFL announced its schedule today, so here is a look at the Jets lineup of opponents in their first year under Rex Ryan:

Week One at Houston Texans - A very winnable opening game, in which the Jets need to take care of business because of difficult opponents the following weeks. The Texans have some firepower on offense, but have struggled on defense the past few years.

Darrelle Revis versus Andre Johnson should be a great battle to watch. Could this game mark the beginning of the Brett Ratliff era or will Kellen Clemens be taking his second shot at being the Jets quarterback?

Week Two vs New England Patriots - Yes, another home opener versus the Patriots. The last three years New England has knocked the Jets off in their home opener, so hopefully the Jets can end that streak and send an early message to the division and league. Patriots fans better hope Tom Brady's knee is truly recovered because you have to think Rex Ryan is going to be sending the house at No. 12.

Week Three vs Tennessee Titans - A tough early season game, that should be a defensive struggle. The Jets certainly showed they matched up well with the Titans last year, and this year's Tennessee team isn't much different.

Who on the Titans is getting open against our secondary? However on the flip side, who on our team is getting open against the Titans secondary?

Week Four at New Orleans Saints - A tough road game. This will be a huge test for the newly assembled Jets secondary. We also get to see our old friend Jonathan Vilma and overpaid headcase Jeremy Shockey.

Week Five at Miami Dolphins (MNF) - The first of two prime-time games for the Jets. I am sorry but the 2008 Dolphins reminded me an awful lot of the 2006 Jets, and I think the 2009 Dolphins are going to be very similar to the 2007 Jets.

We also know that Rex Ryan knows how to shut down Chad Pennington and the Fins gimmick offense. Remember last year's wild card game? I think Ed Reed is still running back a Pennington interception somewhere.

Week Six vs Buffalo Bills - Should be a good early season divisional game. Lee Evans and TO versus Revis and Sheppard should be fun to watch. Kris Jenkins dominated Buffalo early in the season last year before he was slowed by injuries, so hopefully he can pull a repeat performance here.

Week Seven at Oakland Raiders - Oakland might as well be a divisional opponent for the Jets since they seemingly play them every year. Can we please win a game on the West Coast? I am still having nightmares about JaMarcus Russell and Javon Walker driving up and down the field on our defense.

Week Eight vs Miami Dolphins - A quick turnaround on the games versus Miami. I don't care how many snaps Ronnie Brown takes at quarterback, or how many times they run high school jet sweep to Ricky Williams, or how many three yard in routes they throw to Devon Bess, the Fins are getting swept by the Jets this year.

Week Nine Bye Week - Splits the Season in half.

Week 10 vs Jacksonville Jaguars - The Jags always have a tough defense and running game, which the Jets should also have this year. Should be a hard fought low scoring game.

Week 11 at New England Patriots - The Jets best memory from last year might have been knocking off the Patriots in their building, let's see if they can make it two years in a row. A quick reminder to Brian Schottenheimer...Get Leon Washington the football.

Week 12 vs Carolina Panthers - I know I keep mentioning him but Darrelle Revis really has his hands full this year: Andre Johnson, TO, Randy Moss, Ted Ginn Jr (Joking), and now Steve Smith? This will be a good test for the Jets late in year against what should be a very good team.

Week 13 at Buffalo Bills (Thursday Night) - Fortunately this game is in Toronto. I am sure the team is thrilled to be playing inside in front of a less than raucous crowd, than at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Week 14 at Tampa Bay Bucs - McCown/Leftwich versus Clemens/Ratliff...not exactly a headline grabbing quarterback match-up regardless of who wins either competition.

Week 15 vs Atlanta Falcons - Imagine the Jets would have traded up for Matt Ryan last year. Please sack him at least once, Vernon Gholston, to make us all feel better about this.

Week 16 at Indiannapolis Colts - Always a difficult place to play and always a tough team to play.

Week 17 vs Cincinnati Bengals - Not a bad match-up to have if the Jets need a win to get into the playoffs.

Help Wanted: New York Jets Offense

Defense wins championships. We hear it all the time and the statement often rings true on the football field. As a follower of the New York Jets, you have to feel good about the assembled pieces on the defensive side of the ball and the guy calling the shots. The Jets have pro-bowlers at all three levels of their defense, solid depth, and an aggressive, confident head coach making decisions. If everybody stays healthy, the Jets very well may have a top five defense in the NFL this year.

However, they have issues on the other side of the ball. The Jets appear to be comfortable letting one of their young, untested quarterbacks start under center for them this year.

Personally, I don't have a problem with this decision. Why? I believe Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff could be the right answer at quarterback for the long term.

Clemens can play and succeed at this level. Go back to 2007 and watch the 4th quarter of the Jets/Ravens and Jets/Steelers game, along with the full Jets/Redskins or Jets/Dolphins game.

Let's see Clemens get a shot with a good offensive line and two Pro Bowl running backs taking pressure off him, before we write him off.

Brett Ratliff is an undrafted free agent who came out of nowhere to enter this competition. However, that doesn't mean he can't play in the NFL.

The guy has the size and arm strength you want in a starting quarterback and you need some kind of talent to light it up the way he did last preseason. Whoever wins this quarterback battle is going to be asked to manage the game and take an occasional shot down the field, and I think both of these guys can handle that.

Just because Clemens or Ratliff could be the answer at quarterback doesn't mean they don't need more support around them, particularly at wide receiver and tight end.

With the Jets current depth chart, Jerricho Cotchery is the unquestioned number one receiver and there is a gaping hole opposite him. My initial reaction would be to say, it's not a big deal, they can focus on making Dustin Keller (48 catches last year) the number two option, even though he is a tight end.

Yet, they can't do that right now because they don't have another tight end on the roster to line up if they split Keller out. Literally, the only other tight end on the roster right now is James Dearth, who hasn't caught a pass or played a down on offense in years.

I know the Jets are experimenting with switching defensive end Kareem Brown to tight end, but that isn't enough. The Jets need a legit, blocking tight end who can play 30-40 snaps a game.

Dustin Keller is a wide receiver, who is listed as a tight end. The Jets drafted him to catch passes, not block. It is going to be receiver by committee opposite Cotchery and Keller needs to lead the way, by being a 60-70 catch guy.

Beyond him, Leon Washington needs to catch more passes as the Jets hopefully find a way to get him the ball far more frequently than they did last year.

What about the wide receivers besides Cotchery? First off, the Jets need to spend a first day pick on a receiver. Chansi Stuckey is a guy who is built to be a slot/number three receiver. Yes, he can be more involved than he was last year, but asking him to be a full time split end doesn't play to his strengths and will likely result in him getting hurt.

I know David Clowney has potential but honestly he reminds me more of a Dedric Ward in 1998 type player. He would be best used as a home run hitter and occasional starter because he also has injury issues. Brad Smith has been given plenty of chances at receiver the past two years and has never stepped up.

The best case scenario for the Jets is that Clowney, Smith, and Stuckey can form a serviceable committee opposite Cotchery that allows their first or second round pick time to adjust to the NFL.

Hopefully, the Jets pick the right guy and by the end of the year he can be a capable starter opposite Cotchery, which will allow Stuckey to slide back into his natural position in the slot and let Clowney focus on being a deep threat.

Breaking Down the Jets Quarterbacks: Do We Need Jay Cutler?

The NFL Draft is only one month away, and the Jets still have needs all over their roster that they will attempt to fill with their six draft choices.

In preparation for the draft, I am going to go through each of the positions on the roster and examine what they currently have, who they could add through free agency, and who they could potentially draft.

Today, I will look at the quarterbacks, because of the news that Jay Cutler is officially on the trading block:

Current Quarterbacks on the Jets Roster:

1. Kellen Clemens—If you had to say there was a front runner at this point in the Jets quarterback battle, it would have to be Clemens.

He has eight starts under his belt, all of which took place during the 2007 season. When given the chance to play, Clemens has been inconsistent, mixing some impressive deep throws with stretches of inaccuracy, and happy feet in the pocket.

He was drafted to be the quarterback of the future and has never had a chance to play behind a good offensive line. Unless the Jets make a major move, he will be given every chance to be the guy this season.

2. Brett Ratliff—Last year's pre-season wonder, Ratliff came out of nowhere to have a great training camp and lead the AFC in passer rating.

Head Coach Rex Ryan says the organization is split 50-50 on whether Clemens or Ratliff should be the guy, which is a good sign for Ratliff, since he has never even taken a regular season snap. He has all the physical tools and will go into camp with a very real shot of winning the job.

3. Erik Ainge—Ainge is mentioned as being a part of the quarterback battle but he is a long shot to receive any playing time this year. He struggled heavily in camp last season and then was suspended four games for using performance enhancing drugs. This is really more of a two man race between Clemens and Ratliff as of right now.

Free Agency:

The Jets appear to have no interest in bringing any free agent quarterbacks like Byron Leftwich or Jeff Garcia in.

The real question is now: how hard are they going to go after Cutler?

He is on the market, the Jets have a good working relationship with his agent and Mike Tannenbaum has shown his creativity in the past about making big deals.

There is no question Cutler would be a major upgrade over Clemens or Ratliff, but how much is it going to cost the Jets?

Also, it is already known that some players in the locker room (most notably Kerry Rhodes) strongly dislike Cutler and want to see the young guys on the roster get a shot.

If the Jets are going to get Cutler, they are going to have to give up their first round pick this year and another first day pick either this year or next.

I don't want to see David Harris or Darrelle Revis going anywhere, on top of those draft picks, and I doubt Coach Ryan is going to start taking apart his defense before the season starts.

The Jets would likely have to involve a third team in order to acquire Cutler. I still think it is a long shot they work something out for him. Tannenbaum loves his draft picks too much in order to satisfy Denver with a trade.

Draft:

The Jets are apparently very high on Josh Freeman from Kansas State, and could take a long look at him at No. 17.

Coach Ryan won't hesitate to play a rookie if he feels he is the best man for the job after what he saw last season in Baltimore.

I don't know how much the Jets like Mark Sanchez, but if he is still around at pick 17, they would have to seriously consider him also.

Breaking Down the New York Jets' Running Backs

The NFL Draft is only one month away, and the Jets still have needs all over their roster that they will attempt to fill with their six draft choices.

In preparation for the draft, I am going to go through each of the positions on the roster and examine what they currently have, who they could add through free agency, and who they could potentially draft.

Today, I will look at their running backs:

New York Jets Current Running Backs:

1. Thomas Jones - Jones is coming off a career year but has missed the Jets voluntary workouts in protest of his contract. It remains to be seen if he will skip anything mandatory, and if he does how the Jets will respond.

Jones is a legit No. 1 back but is over 30 years old, and the Jets philosophy is not to re- negotiate contracts with veterans. If Rex Ryan wants the running game he has talked about all offseason, he is going to need Jones on the team, so I think something will be worked out.

2. Leon Washington - The Jets are currently working on extending their do everything back. Washington's production speaks for itself when he has the ball in his hands. All I can say about him is that the Jets' No. 1 priority on offense this year should be to get him more touches.

I firmly believe Washington could be a Brian Westbrook type of player if given the chance.

3. Tony Richardson - The Jets were smart for bringing the veteran fullback on for another year. He is a great lead blocker and was a big reason the Jets improved so much in short yardage situations last year.

4. Marcus Mason - The Jets signed him last season and he never made it to the active roster. He was the NFL's leading rusher last preseason for the Redskins, so there could be some potential there.

5. Jehuu Calucrick - A big back, who could play fullback and halfback in short yardage situations. It will be tough for him to make the active roster if Tony Richardson stays healthy all season.

6. Danny Woodhead - A big training camp story last year, Woodhead was a monster in Division II before being picked up by the Jets as an undrafted free agent. He missed all of last season with an injury, but will try to make the roster this year as a punt returner and scat back, which will be tough with Leon Washington and Jim Leonhard on the roster.

Free Agency

- I can't see the Jets touching any of the remaining backs on the free agent market, unless Jones ends up holding out or somebody gets hurt. It wouldn't hurt to have another halfback with some experience but they may be willing to give Mason, Caulcrick, and Woodhead a long look in training camp before signing a veteran.

Draft

- A few mock drafts have the Jets taking a running back with their first-round selection. If the Thomas Jones situation gets taken care of, I'd be shocked to see them spend a first rounder on a guy like Knowshon Moreno or Beanie Wells.

Even if they are anticipating a hold out from Jones, I'd still be surprised to see them pass up a receiver or quarterback for a RB in the first round.

They do still have a pro-bowl player in Leon Washington at the position, while they absolutely still need another starting caliber wide receiver and more talent at the quarterback position.

However, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Jets take a long look at a guy like Donald Brown in the second round, especially if Jones contract issue becomes a bigger problem.

If the Jets spend a day-one pick on a running back, it will show they are expecting an extended problem with Jones.

Breaking Down The New York Jets Linebackers

The NFL Draft is only one month away, and the Jets still have needs all over their roster that they will attempt to fill with their six draft choices. In preparation for the draft, I am going to go through each of the positions on the roster and examine what they currently have, who they could add through free agency, and who they could potentially draft.

Today, I will look at their linebackers.

1. David Harris—Harris had a monster rookie season two years ago, but missed some time last year with injuries. Regardless, he was still very effective when he was on the field, and should be a integral part of the Jets defense for years to come. Rex Ryan has already stated that he is very impressed with Harris and expects big things from him this year.

2. Bart Scott—The Jets' biggest offseason acquisition, Scott is expected to be the emotional leader of the defense and provide a highly productive tandem with David Harris at the inside linebacker position. He followed Ryan over from Baltimore and should help teach the other linebackers the defense.

3. Calvin Pace—Pace received a monster contract from the Jets last year and responded with a very productive season. He is locked into the starting position at the one outside linebacker spot and will hopefully receive more opportunities to rush the passer this year.

4. Bryan Thomas—He will battle Vernon Gholston for playing time at the other outside linebacker position. Thomas started off last season strong but disappeared down the stretch.

5. Vernon Gholston—Gholston was a bust in his rookie season, but there is a hope that Ryan and his new defensive schemes will help him reach the potential that made him the No. 6 overall pick in the draft.

6. Larry Izzo—He was signed for special teams purposes but will also provide depth at the inside linebacker position.

7. Jason Trusnik—Another special teams player who has received some playing time the past couple of years on defense.

8. Marques Murrell—He has flashed some potential at the outside linebacker position and, if Vernon Gholston can't get his act together, he could receive an opportunity to get some reps.

9. Kenwin Cummings—He was the biggest surprise on the Jets' final 53 last year but never ended up receiving any playing time. Cummings will compete for a roster spot at inside linebacker, backing up Harris and Scott.

10. Brandon Renkart—A Rutgers product who will also compete for a roster spot at inside linebacker.

Free Agency

Don't expect the Jets to make any more additions through free agency at linebacker. I think Ryan will let young guys like Murrell, Cummings, and Trusnik prove they could be capable backups instead of spending money on another veteran.

Draft

After spending their first-round pick on a linebacker last year and spending major money on two linebackers in free agency the past two offseasons, I'd be surprised to see the Jets take a linebacker before the fourth or fifth round.

New York Jets Wide Receiver Breakdown

The NFL Draft is only one month away and the Jets still have needs all over their roster that they will attempt to fill with their six draft choices.

In preparation for the draft, I am going to go through each of the positions on the roster and examine what they currently have, who they could add through free agency, and who they could potentially draft.

Today I am going to look at the wide receivers:

Jets Current Wide Receivers

1. Jerricho Cotchery

Cotchery is a tough, possession receiver who runs very well after the catch. He is an ideal number two receiver but will be forced into being the Jets clear number one with Laveranues Coles departure.

Cotchery is coming off a disappointing season, where he finished with only 858 yards receiving and 5 touchdowns (only 2 coming after week 4).

He needs to assume a leadership role on the offense and step up his production to his 2007 level, when he 1130 yards receiving.

2. Chansi Stuckey

Stuckey had a productive season last year as the Jets slot receiver. However, it remains to be seen if he can handle being a full time player. He is a small guy, whose quickness is best utilized in the slot, not on the outside.

The Jets are asking alot out of Stuckey if they expect him to become a 70 catch type player for them. He also has injury issues, since he missed the entire 2007 season with a foot injury.

3. David Clowney

The Jets great hope. Clowney showed immense potential in the preseason last year but was derailed by a collar bone injury.

He was only active in two regular season games, but made a one-handed grab against Buffalo for a 26 yard gain on the only ball he got to touch all year.

He is going to get a legitimate shot this year to see extended playing time and become the deep threat he has the potential to be.

4. Brad Smith

An Eric Mangini favorite, who has never really done much catching the football in his 3 years in the league. He is coming off an uninspiring 12 catch season.

However, he does have good size and speed, which means he should get plenty of chances in training camp, especially with the Jets current depth chart at this position.

5. Wallace Wright

A special teams ace, who probably won't see any time on offense.

Free Agency

The only receiver the Jets have been linked with in free agency was Kelly Washington and that was for special teams purposes. They appear to have no interest in signing any of the remaining players on the market. I still don't think it would hurt to bring somebody in with some experience.

The Draft

Most people think the Jets are going quarterback or wide receiver in the first round. The more I hear Rex Ryan talk about Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff, the more I think he is genuinely satisfied with the two of them competing for the job in camp.

The Jets aren't going to get to sniff Michael Crabtree at No. 17 but may have a shot at Jeremy Maclin, who would bring some instant big play ability to their offense.

If Maclin is off the board, don't be surprised if the Jets take a long took at Percy Harvin or Darrius Heyward-Bay, both of whom have the physical tools to be major contributors right away.

Other News

The Jets signed free agent corner Donald Strickland to a three year deal. Forget about them drafting a corner now, unless it is very late on day two.

They now have excellent depth with Darrelle Revis, Lito Sheppard, Dwight Lowery, and Strickland. He should head into camp as the favorite to be the nickel back.

Jets Roster Breakdown: Secondary

The NFL Draft is only one month away and the Jets still have needs all over their roster that they will attempt to fill with their six draft choices. In preparation for the draft, I am going to go through each of the positions on the roster and examine what they currently have, who they could add through free agency, and who they could potentially draft, starting today with the secondary:

Jets Current Cornerbacks:

1. Darrelle Revis - Revis is coming off a Pro Bowl season and is quickly turning into one of the best players in the NFL at his position. He is legitimate number one corner that teams will game plan to throw away from, putting increased pressure on whomever is playing opposite him.

2. Lito Sheppard - The Jets acquired Sheppard from the Eagles to start opposite Revis and hope he can regain his Pro Bowl from a few years ago. If he can stay healthy, Sheppard is a very good number two corner and will it make it very difficult for opposing defenses to attack the Jets through the air.

3. Dwight Lowery - Lowery had a great start to his rookie season last year but began to struggle down the stretch. However, he did show he has the tools to be a quality starter in this league, if not a very good nickel back. He may need a little more time to develop but could see extended action if the injury bug catches up with Sheppard again.

4. Drew Coleman - Coleman has had an up and down three year career with the Jets. He is a very fast player, who is valuable on special teams and has previous starting experience. He struggled in his role as a nickel back last year and needs a strong camp to stick on the roster this year.

5. Ahmad Carroll - A former first round pick, Carroll was resigned this year for special teams purposes. However, there is some hope that under Rex Ryan he could reach his potential and contribute on defense.

Jets Current Safeties:

1. Kerry Rhodes - Rhodes is playmaker, who had a somewhat quiet year last season which many are blaming on Eric Mangini's schemes. He hasn't had a consistent starter next to him in his career and the hope is with Jim Leonhard next to him, that he could become the Jets version of Ed Reed.

2. Jim Leonhard - Leonhard had a breakout season last year under Rex Ryan in Baltimore and has joined his former coach in New York. The Jets brought him in to bring stability opposite Kerry Rhodes and to help out with punt returning duties.

3. Abram Elam - Elam created a ton of big plays last season but struggles in pass coverage. He provides strong depth, good special teams play, and his hard hitting style should find him some playing time on defense in a few packages.

4. Eric Smith - An Eric Mangini guy who was given the chance to start last year and never took advantage of his opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't make the roster this year.

5. James Ihedigbo - A special teams player, who will also be fighting for a roster spot.

Free Agency:

- It is rumored that the Jets are close to signing former Raven Samari Rolle to boost their depth at cornerback. I don't know if this move shows less faith in Lito Sheppard's ability to stay healthy or Dwight Lowery's ability to be the No. 3 corner. However, you could never have enough cornerbacks and the Jets should be able to get Rolle relatively cheap.

Draft:

- If the Jets sign Rolle, I doubt they will draft another corner. However, if they do not I wouldn't be shocked if they took a long look at one on the first day of the draft. I have seen a few mock drafts that have them selecting Vontae Davis or Alphonso Smith in the first round, but even if they don't sign Rolle, I still think they'd wait until round two with more pressing needs at quarterback, receiver, and defensive line.

The Jets have a pretty good group of corners right now with Revis, Sheppard, and Lowery and are solid at safety with Rhodes, Leonhard, and Elam. In the second or third round, they could look at a corner like Darius Butler or Sean Smith.

New York Jets: To Jay Or Not To Jay?

I haven't spent too much time entertaining the idea of Jay Cutler coming to the Jets because I wasn't sure how serious Mike Tannenbaum was about pursuing him. Obviously, the Jets were going to perform their due diligence but I never really saw them as one of the top 2-3 teams who were really going to go after him.

Yet, the early word out of today's league meetings is that the Jets are very seriously considering making a push to acquire Cutler. When you look at the Jets current depth chart, it makes sense to pursue him but how much are they willing to give up?

Is Jay Cutler worth two first day draft picks and another player on top of that? Do the Jets even have enough ammunition to make Denver consider making a deal with them? I don't want to see Darrelle Revis or Leon Washington leave in order to acquire Cutler.

It isn't common for 25-year-old pro bowl quarterbacks to become available, which is something the Jets have to consider. Yet, does Cutler fit the identity of this team? The last time I checked the Jets have built their team to run the ball and play defense. They aren't looking to throw the ball all over the field with a receiving core that consists of Jerricho Cotchery, Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney, and Brad Smith.

If they trade for Cutler, they aren't going to have the draft picks to acquire another weapon for him at receiver and may be forced to give up one of the few weapons they already have on offense.

I know the Jets are high on Kansas State's Josh Freeman and if the Cutler deal doesn't happen they could very well end up picking him at number 17. Most people don't think Freeman will be ready to play right away, but most people thought the same about Joe Flacco last year and the Ravens were a quarter away from the Super Bowl.

If the Jets defense plays to their potential, Leon Washington's role is expanded, and somebody steps up at receiver, the Jets will be good enough to make a run late into January with either Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff, or Josh Freeman at quarterback.

I remember last year when the Jets spent the entire offseason building their team to run the football, play ball control offense, and rely on their defense to win games for them. Their four month game plan was changed at the last second when they acquired Brett Favre and the result was a third place finish in the AFC East.

Jay Cutler is a very good quarterback but he has made the playoffs the exact same number of times as Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff, and Josh Freeman...zero. Great teams are built through the draft, a strong defense, and a running game that can carry an offense in December and January. Teams don't win championships by giving up the rumored asking price for Jay Cutler.

Where the Jets Still Need Help

The Jets have aggressively filled some of their weaknesses, especially on the defensive side of the ball. However, there are still a few areas where they are going to need help, whether it is through a trade, free agency, the draft, or somebody on the current roster stepping up.

Here is a run-down of where the Jets need some help:

1. Quarterback

I don't buy the "Jay Cutler to the Jets" hype, and I don't think they are bringing in any of the remaining free agent quarterbacks. I wouldn't be shocked if they ended up taking Josh Freeman in the draft, but it still really looks like it is going to be Kellen Clemens versus Brett Ratliff this summer.

One of these two guys needs to step up and show that they can manage a game and occasionally hit a big play down the field.

2. Wide Receiver

If the Jets don't draft a receiver in the first two rounds, they are going to be banking on either Chansi Stuckey or David Clowney stepping up in a big way. I love Jerricho Cotchery, but he isn't a No. 1 receiver and he is going to need some help.

Unless Clowney or Stuckey blows up this year—and I could I see a guy like Clowney doing just that—the Jets need another weapon on the outside.

3. Tight End

The Jets need a blocking tight end. Right now, they have Dustin Keller, who is basically a wide receiver who occasionally is in a three-point stance, and long snapper James Dearth. There are still some options out there in free agency.

4. Running Back

It wouldn't hurt to have another running back on the roster besides pro-bowlers Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, especially if Jones' contract issues linger. Honestly, part of improving this position is getting Washington more touches. The guy can be Brian Westbrook if simply given the chance. Get No. 29 the ball!

5. Cornerback

The Jets could still use another body here. Lito Sheppard has a history of injuries, and I don't know if Dwight Lowery is ready to step into a full-time role if Sheppard gets hurt. Don't be shocked to see them draft a corner, especially if they don't close a deal with Corey Ivy.

New York Jets Add Some Spare Parts and Draft Observations

After taking a few days off in free agency, the Jets made a few minor moves to boost the depth of their defense and special teams. Here is a quick run down of their transactions and a few thoughts on the draft:

1. Jets sign LB Larry Izzo - Izzo is a pro-bowl caliber special teams player, who will also provide some depth at the linebacker position. Basically, he will be filling the roster spot of David who joined Eric Mangini in Cleveland.

2. Jets sign DT Howard Green - Green will compete for reps behind Kris Jenkins. Sione Pougha was an Eric Mangini guy, and could be on his way out. The Jets also lost CJ Mosely to the Browns, and Green could help fill some of his playing time.

3. Jets sign DE Marques Douglas - Another Rex Ryan guy, who will provide depth along the defensive line. He will be able to spell both Kenyon Coleman and Shaun Ellis. It will help to have somebody who is familiar with Ryan's system on the d-line.

- The Jets are apparently still interested in Corey Ivy, which is a signing I am in favor of. You could never have enough cornerbacks and Ivy's experience with Ryan's defense is obviously a plus.

- The Jets still desperately need a blocking tight end. Dustin Keller needs somebody to complement his receiving skills. They are still looking at former 49ers tight end Billy Bajema who could fill that role.

- The Jets are sending a contingent to to meet with Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman this week. His stock has been rising recently, thanks to favorable comparisons to Joe Flacco and the success he had last year. Freeman has a huge arm and good mobility. As of right now, he will probably be on the board at No. 17.

- Don't expect Jay Cutler to end up in green and white. The Jets aren't going to give up a 1st round draft pick for him or the quality of player Denver would require in return.

- If the draft were today, I would say the Jets would have to look very hard at either a wide receiver or a quarterback. There should be a few quality wide-outs still on the board at number 17, whether it is Percy Harvin, Jeremy Maclin, Derrius Hayward-Bey, or Hakeem Nicks.

If I were the Jets I would take the quarterback in the first round, whether it ends up being Mark Sanchez or Josh Freeman and then wait for a receiver to drop into the second round and maybe move up and make a play for one.

- Can the Jets win with a receiving core led by Jerricho Cotchery, Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney, and Brad Smith?

Maybe, Clowney is really the x-factor, if the guy can play to the potential he showed last preseason, the Jets may have a starting caliber guy in him. Stuckey is talented enough to be a very good number three receiver and Smith has shown flashes of being a playmaker.

- I know DE Tyson Jackson would be tempting if he were still on the board on No. 17 for the Jets. Rex Ryan loves his defense and Jackson could be his defensive end for years to come after spending some time learning behind Shaun Ellis and Kenyon Coleman.

However, I still feel like the Jets need a little more offensive talent and judging by what is left in free agency, they are going to have to fill that need on the first day of the draft.

- Eric Mangini is turning the Cleveland Browns into the New York Jets second stringers: Hank Poteat, Abam Elam, Eric Barton, CJ Mosley, David Bowens...all guys who would be sitting on the bench in New York next year. I like Rex Ryan's approach of bringing in a starting inside linebacker and a starting safety.

Jets Still Have Work To Do

After spending a week on vacation in Cancun, I returned to find that the Jets had a relatively quiet week in free agency. They signed Jim Leonhard, which most of us expected, and brought back Tony Richardson and Jay Feely, both of which are solid moves.

However, despite vastly improving their defense by adding Leonhard, Lito Sheppard, and Bart Scott, the Jets still have some holes to fill on both sides of the ball.

Defensive Line

With CJ Mosley rejoining Eric Mangini in Cleveland, the Jets have some depth issues. It appears both Kenyon Coleman and Shaun Ellis will be back at defensive end, but the Jets could use another player to rotate through with them.

They could also use a backup nose tackle for Kris Jenkins, who could provide an upgrade over Sione Pougha. They are having former Ravens defensive end Marques Douglas in for a visit today. He is a guy who could provide depth at both defensive line positions.

Offensive Line

Obviously the starting five is set, but it wouldn't hurt to add some depth at both guard and tackle. The Jets need to start developing guys who can step in when Alan Faneca and Damien Woody retire or begin slipping off because of age.

Wide Receiver

The Jets have a major hole here. They can't go into the year with either Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff throwing to Jerricho Cotchery, Chansi Stuckey, and David Clowney. Another starting quality receiver is needed, whether it is through the draft or free agency.

Torry Holt's name is beginning to come up a lot because he is expected to be released next week and the Jets' new wide receiver coach has previous experience with him. I think signing Holt and then drafting a guy like Percy Harvin to learn behind him for a couple of years would be a smart route to take.

Tight End

The Jets still need a blocking tight end to fill the hole left by Chris Baker.

Five Reasons the Jets Are the Early Winners in Free Agency

It was a big first day in free agency for the Jets, who aggressively attacked their weaknesses, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Today should be a little slower, but there are still a few potential deals that could be closed over the weekend.

1. Jets Sign ILB Bart Scott

It is one thing to talk about Scott likely being a Jet in the weeks leading up to free agency and it is another for the Jets to outbid and outwork the Ravens for him. Scott and David Harris instantly form a great inside linebacker duo for the Jets' 3-4.

Good luck to opposing teams trying to run the ball up the middle on Kris Jenkins, Scott, and Harris.

The Jets were smart for pursuing the 28-year-old Scott instead of the 34-year-old Ray Lewis, who now seems to be having a tough time finding a home.

Scott will help the Jets linebackers with the learning curve in picking up Rex Ryan's defense, and will also provide an upgrade over Eric Barton.

2. Jets Re-Sign OG Brandon Moore

After being turned down by Steelers guard Chris Kemoeatu, the Jets smartly brought back Brandon Moore before he could spend more than a full day on the free agent market. Moore is the Jets' best run blocker, and his return will allow the Jets to keep the chemistry they formed last year on the offensive line.

3. Jets Trade 2009 Fifth Round Pick and 2010 Conditional Pick For CB Lito Sheppard

Sheppard is a two time Pro-Bowl player who will step in right away next to Darrelle Revis. He was pushed out of the starting lineup by Asante Samuel last year, but, when Sheppard is healthy, he is a solid No. 1 corner and an excellent No. 2 corner, which he will be on the Jets.

4. Jets Close to Signing Corey Ivy

Ivy is a quality nickel back, who Rex Ryan is comfortable with from his years in Baltimore. The Jets have made him an offer, but Ivy is still testing the market. If the Jets can bring him in, they would have a solid, deep group of corners with Revis, Sheppard, Ivy, and Dwight Lowery.

5. Jim Leonhard Coming in for a Visit

Most people expect a deal with Leonhard to be done by the end of the day, which would be a nice pickup for the Jets. Leonhard is another Rex Ryan guy, who is coming off a big time performance in the playoffs. He would fill the long-standing hole next to Kerry Rhodes at safety.

If the Jets can wrap up deals with Ivy and Leonhard, they will have filled their weaknesses at linebacker, safety, and corner and significantly improved an already good defense.

However, the Jets still have some issues on offense. They need a wide receiver, a blocking tight end, and more depth on the offensive line.

New York Jets Cut Laveranues Coles: We've Got Work To Do

The Jets made the somewhat surprising decision tonight to let Laveranues Coles go.

Both sides reached an agreement that will allow Coles to test the free agent market and clear the Jets of about $6 million in cap space.

Most people believe it is already a foregone conclusion that Coles will end up in Miami with his buddy Chad Pennington, and honestly that is ok with me. The Dolphins aren't going any further with the Pennington/Coles connection than the Jets did.

Before moving forward to address what the Jets must do now in free agency—with the extra cap space and a hole at the wide receiver position— let's take a minute to reflect on Coles' time with the Jets.

Coles was always a tough player who played through pain and was never afraid to go over the middle to make the difficult catch. He was one of the most productive receivers in Jets history and a guy any fan should respect.

However, days as a No. 1 receiver are over and the Jets already have an identical, younger player in Jerricho Cotchery. The Jets need another wide-out who can provide some height and stretch the field and better complement Cotchery's skills.

The Jets now have plenty of money to be active in free agency. Personally, I'd like to see them find a way to bring back Brandon Moore with the money freed up by Coles, but I doubt that will happen.

You have to think the Jets wouldn't just let Coles walk unless they had a plan in place for the receiver position. Will they try to trade for Anquan Boldin? Will they make a push to sign TJ Houshmandzadeh? Are they looking to draft a receiver in the first round?

Right now on the roster, they have a legit No. 2 in Cotchery, a good slot receiver in Chansi Stuckey, a potential home-run-hitter in David Clowney, and two special teams players in Brad Smith and Wallace Wright. They also have last year's sixth round pick, Marcus Henry, on the practice squad.

There is no way the Jets can go into the season with that depth chart.

Stuckey is a No. 3/slot guy and not built to be an every down player. Clowney has potential, but hasn't done enough in the regular season to be trusted as a full time player. He is also probably best fit for a No. 3 or No. 4 guy, who can be used to stretch the defense.

With the cap space the Jets now have, you have to expect the Jets to make a huge push for Bart Scott. They know how many teams want him and probably realized it is going to take big time offer to get him into green and white.

I think Jim Leonhard still remains a foregone conclusion to come in at safety. However, the Jets have to add another body at receiver now through free agency.

If they aren't going for a big name because they plan to look receiver early in the draft, then they at least have to sign a guy like Devery Henderson or Jabar Gaffney for insurance purposes.

New York Jets Free Agency Preview

The NFL's free agency season is ready to kick off at the end of this week and the Jets have already been active in preparation. Here is a review of the Jets moves so far and what to expect this weekend:

1. Jets release David Bowens and Brad Kassell

The decision to part with Kassell makes sense since he had trouble staying healthy and wasn't contributing at all on defense.

Bowens was a good player for the Jets the past two years on both special teams and defense. I would hope the Jets consider bringing him back at a cheaper price if nobody else signs him. He is a core special teams player for Mike Westhoff and provides depth at both inside and outside linebacker.

2. Jets release tight end Chris Baker

Most of us saw this coming. The Jets weren't going to pay Baker when they already had Dustin Keller coming off a very successful rookie season.

Baker was the Jets best run-blocking tight end, which means they have a hole to fill now if they plan on running the ball the way Rex Ryan wants to.

I don't know how they feel about bringing Bubba Franks back after a disappointing season, which means they may be forced to look at guy like Dan Campbell, who should be cheap and is a good blocker.

There are some rumblings that Baker could return with a lower contract, but I think he will get some solid offers in free agency because of his versatility.

3. Jets plan to release Brandon Moore

I hate this move. Moore is the Jets' best run blocker and is one of the better young guards in the league. If you want to run the football, you pay the money to keep this guy.

The Jets probably liked what they saw out of Wayne Hunter and Robert Turner as blocking tight ends in short yardage last year. So they most likely feel that they could slide Damien Woody back to guard and let one of those two take over at tackle.

Regardless, I think it is foolish to mess with the chemistry of an offensive line that had so much success last year.

As a result of these moves, the Jets now have a decent amount of cap room to be active in free agency.

Most people expect the Jets to lock up Baltimore safety Jim Leonhard within the first day of free agency, which will be a nice pickup for them. He should complement Kerry Rhodes very well and was a playmaker on both defense and special teams for the Ravens last year.

The Jets would be foolish to chase after Ray Lewis. Why would you pay more for a 34-year-old linebacker, when you could pursue a 28-year-old Bart Scott? The Jets will have to battle a few teams for him, but should have a leg up because of Ryan. David Harris and Bart Scott in the middle sounds awfully good to me.

I wouldn't be shocked if Laveranues Coles ends up being released or traded. Coles wants to be paid as a No. 1 wide receiver and he simply isn't.

If the Jets get rid of Coles, you would expect them to pursue a free-agent receiver (not Anquan Boldin or T.J. Houshmandzadeh) and look very hard at Percy Harvin or Jeremy Maclin in the first round of the draft.

In addition, expect the Jets to try to extend the contracts of Leon Washington and Nick Mangold, who are both coming off Pro-Bowl years.

New York Jets Off-Season: Assessing The Defense

After looking at the Jets' offense on Tuesday, here is a look at their defense heading into the off-season:

Defensive Tackle: Head coach Rex Ryan loves Kris Jenkins but needs to find a way to spell him occasionally so he doesn't break down late in the year. I don't know how high the new coaching staff is on Sione Pouha, who was a Mangini guy. CJ Mosley can slide in from defensive end and play some spot duty at defensive tackle, but the reality is that the Jets need some depth here whether they add someone in the draft or free agency. Shaun Cody could be a cheap option to look at.

Defensive End: Another position where the Jets need more depth. Shaun Ellis will be back but there are rumors that Kenyon Coleman could be a cap casualty in the next few days. Mike DeVito showed some flashes last year or CJ Mosley is a good backup. Kareem Brown and the recently-signed Sean Conover will also compete in camp for reps. Expect the Jets to spend a draft pick at this position with one of their seven picks, perhaps even their first-round pick on a guy like Tyson Jackson.

Inside Linebacker: David Harris is locked in at one spot. The Jets will make an effort to bring in Bart Scott from Baltimore, but may get outbid by another team and not have the money to match. If this is the case, they may bring back Eric Barton for another year or two, since he was productive as a starter last year. If things fall through with both Barton and Scott, it isn't out of the question for the Jets to look LB in the first round, whether it is Ray Maualuga or James Laurinaitis. Jason Trusnik and Kenwin Cummings could provide depth here next season.

Outside Linebacker: There are some rumblings that perpetual disappointment Bryan Thomas could be let go, which would increase the pressure on Vernon Gholston to get his act together. Calvin Pace is locked in at the other starting spot. Some in the Jets organization feel that Marques Murrell could be a major contributor if given a chance. David Bowens could slide back out to his natural position and provide quality depth if he isn't let go. I don't expect Cody Spencer to be re-signed.

Cornerback: The Jets are in desperate need of a corner to start opposite Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis. Dwight Lowery showed flashes last season but may be better off as a No. 3 corner, and Drew Coleman struggled heavily last year. David Barrett has already been cut, Hank Poteat probably will end up in Cleveland, Ahmad Carroll might be brought back but only for special teams reasons and Ty Law's time with the Jets is done.

Nnamdi Asomugha and Dunta Robinson have already been franchised, thinning out the free agent market. Bryant McFadden could be a nice pickup if the Jets are willing to spend the money on him. If they are going to go cheap in free agency, they could always bring Justin Miller back and hope he reaches his potential with a new coach. The Jets will probably look to address corner in the first two rounds of the draft, with many projecting them to take Vontae Davis from Illinois in the first round.

Safety: Most expect the Jets to make a strong push to sign Jim Leonhard away from Baltimore, where he is coming off a breakout season. Leonhard would be a perfect compliment to Kerry Rhodes and knows Rex Ryan's system of defense. Abram Elam should be brought back for depth. Eric Smith is yet to produce when given the chance.

Other Notes:

The Jets have brought in Kelley Washington for a visit. He would make a nice replacement for Brad Smith since he can play special teams and actually catch the football if given the chance. Dave Hutchinson has reported the Jets coaching staff is going to give David Clowney every chance to be the game-breaker he showed he could be in pre-season last year, which is exciting to hear.

New York Jets Offseason: Assessing the Offense

With the entire coaching staff now in place, here is a look at the Jets off-season to-do list at each position.

Quarterback

Assuming Brett Favre remains retired, it seems the Jets are content to head into training camp with Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff, Erik Ainge and one more veteran as an insurance policy.

When looking at the free agent market, it seems Kurt Warner is going to retire or go back to Arizona, Kerry Collins is going back to Tennessee and the Jets have no interest in Jeff Garcia.

I doubt, the Jets will pursue Kyle Boller or Rex Grossman, which narrows the field to Byron Leftwich, Dan Orlovsky, J.T. O'Sullivan, JP Losman and Patrick Ramsey.

Leftwich seems like the most likely guy to be brought in as a veteran, although if the Rams release Marc Bulger, keep an eye on him.

In terms of the draft, if Mark Sanchez impresses the Jets over the next month, they could consider him at No. 17 or potentially trade up for him if they like him that much.

Running Back

The biggest question here is if the Jets are going to attempt to re-sign fullback Tony Richardson.

There are rumors he may go to San Francisco to join former running backs coach Jimmy Raye, however, the Jets would be wise to spend the money on him.

It is hard to find a good fullback, unless they are confident Jehuu Calcrick can get the job done next year.

In terms of a No. 3 running back, they do have Marcus Mason on the roster, which had a great preseason for Washington last year.

I wouldn't be shocked if they spent a mid or late-round pick on a RB.

Don't expect Jesse Chatman to be re-signed.

Wide Receiver

The Jets need to decide whether or not they want to try again with Laveranues Coles, Jerricho Cotchery, Chansi Stuckey and a more properly used David Clowney. If they do, they need to re-negotiate Coles' contract or potentially deal with him complaining again this off-season.

Regardless of what happens with Coles, the Jets may have to take a hard look at Percy Harvin or Jeremy Maclin if they are available at No. 17 to add a big play threat at the receiver position.

The Jets won't pursue T.J. Houshmandzadeh or Anquan Boldin, but an intriguing cheaper option could be Devery Henderson, who is a proven deep threat.

Tight End

The Jets need to make a decision on Chris Baker.

If they decide they don't want to pay him, they could pursue a guy like Dan Campbell, who could provide the blocking necessary for a No. 2 tight end, although he can't catch like Baker.

I don't expect Bubba Franks to be brought back after a disappointing season.

Offensive Line

The Jets are set with their five starters, although depth still remains a concern.

Wayne Hunter and Robert Turner saw some action last year in certain packages, but aren't proven NFL players yet.

It wouldn't hurt if the Jets began looking for an eventual replacement for Alan Faneca and Damien Woody through the mid-late rounds of the draft.

Favre Is Done...Good News, Now What?

Thank you Brett Favre for quickly announcing your retirement and freeing up $13 million dollars in cap space for the New York Jets. I know in three months I may be cursing Favre out for trying to come back and force the Jets to release him, but for now he is gone and it is time for the Jets to move forward.

The Favre experiment was a failure by any measure. His heart was never really into winning for the Jets, instead it was into sticking it to his former team, the Green Bay Packers.

He completely burned out down the stretch and didn't seem to care anymore by the Miami game, when CBS caught him giving a half-hearted, emotionless pregame speech to the offense.

The impact of Favre's retirement on the Jets

1. They now can pursue players in free agency. I am not talking about being major players like last year, but they can now afford to make a couple of moves. Releasing David Barrett (thank god) also freed up $4 million in space on top of the $13 million Favre freed up.

The Jets can now focus on extending Leon Washington, re-signing Abram Elam for depth, pursuing Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard, and potentially re-signing Eric Barton if they can't convince Scott to join his old head coach. They may also look to add a cheap corner and defensive end for depth, because I doubt they will spend money for a big name guy.

2. The Jets can now look at free-agent quarterbacks. The only two guys that come to mind are Jeff Garcia and Byron Leftwich. This team is going to add another quarterback, whether it is through free agency or the draft. They won't go into camp with just Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff, and Erik Ainge.

Garcia could be a starter for a year or two, but would cost a decent amount of money. Leftwich is a cheaper option who could compete with Clemens or Ratliff and maybe turn out to be a decent starter for a few years.

3. The Jets will now probably draft a quarterback. Will they spend a first-round pick on a guy like Mark Sanchez or will they wait until the later rounds to bring another arm into camp? I'd be shocked if the Jets didn't spend one of their seven picks on a QB now. It is a just question of how high that pick will be.

If I had to make a prediction right now, I'd say the Jets will draft a QB in somewhere in rounds 3-5 and sign Leftwich. Ainge will eventually be cut, probably sooner rather than later.

The competition will come down to Clemens, Ratliff, Leftwich, and the draft pick which means the Jets will be right back to where they were in 2006 with a four-way QB competition. Obviously it is all speculation at this point, but it safe to assume at least Clemens and Ratliff will have a shot at the job.

I am not as down on Kellen Clemens as most fans are. I would really like to see him get a chance behind a good offensive line, and with a healthy receiving core. Everybody forgets he was playing with Anthony Clement and Adrian Clarke blocking for him, and throwing passes to Justin McCariens and Brad Smith on a regular basis.

Go back to 2007 and watch the second half of the Baltimore game, the Washington game, the end of the Pittsburgh game, and the Miami game. Clemens has some talent. He is mobile and has good arm strength.

All the Jets need this year is a guy to hand the ball off, manage the game, and not turn the ball over. I think Clemens may be able to do that for this team.

Early Mock Draft for the New York Jets

The draft is still a few months away, but Tim Graham over at ESPN.com does a good job of updating what various mock drafts have the different AFC East teams taking as of right now. Here is a look at the most recent update, with a closer examination of each of the picks:

Mel Kiper's pick: Percy Harvin, Florida receiver. The Jets haven't had a deep threat since Santana Moss left for the Redskins. Harvin is a burner and a playmaker, and would instantly add another dynamic weapon alongside Leon Washington and Dustin Keller. Harvin is a top ten talent, but could fall this far because of injury concerns.

Tood McShay's pick: Mark Sanchez, USC quarterback. Sanchez would generate a high amount of excitement because of his name recognition and the fact that he is coming out of USC. Yet, is he anywhere near ready to play? You would have to think if Joe Flacco transitioned so well from a I-AA school that Rex Ryan wouldn't hesitate to hand the reigns over to Sanchez, if Brett Favre decides to retire.

Don Banks' pick: Vontae Davis, Illinois cornerback. Davis is a corner with good size and speed, who would be a perfect fit alongside Darrelle Revis. The Jets hit on Revis around this spot of the first round a few years ago, so they wouldn't hesitate to draft Davis if they believed he was worthy of the pick. Bringing Davis in allows Dwight Lowery to move into the nickel role, where he is better suited for anyway.

Graham also lists a couple other mock drafts that have the Jets taking USC linebacker Brian Cushing, although I doubt they want to add another outside linebacker after signing Calvin Pace last year and drafting Vernon Gholston. I have seen a few drafts online that have them taking Knowshon Moreno, which makes no sense to me since they currently have two pro-bowl running backs.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with Harvin or Davis. It is a big move to select a quarterback in the first round, although if there is a coach who won't be against starting a rookie, it would be Ryan.

One more thing, Ray Lewis isn't going to be a Jet. It would be a foolish move to overpay for another aging star and the Ravens aren't going to let him go anywhere. I'd much rather see the Jets spend their money on his teammates, Jim Leonhard and Bart Scott.

New York Jets' Top 10 Moments of 2008

Yes, this past year was one of the most disappointing in recent memory for the New York Jets. But that doesn't mean there weren't some great moments, especially during their 8-3 start.

Here is one last look back:

10. Beatdown in the Meadowlands

I know it was against the lowly Rams, but still, 40-0 at halftime was impressive. The Jets played a perfect half of football en route to a 47-3 victory. Highlights included a fumble return for a touchdown by Calvin Pace resulting from a strip sack by Abram Elam, two Thomas Jones touchdowns, and a big day for tight end Dustin Keller.

9. Darrelle Ends It

In the Jets' Week One game against the Miami Dolphins, Darrelle Revis clinched the win by ending Miami's game-winning drive with a one-handed interception in the back of the end zone over Ted Ginn, Jr.

8. Dustin Steps Up

Facing a third-and-15 deep in their own territory in overtime against New England, Brett Favre found a wide open Keller for a monster third-down conversion that propelled the Jets' game-winning drive.

7. Favre Makes It Rain

After two straight shaky performances, Favre throws six touchdowns against the eventual NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals, including three scoring strikes to Laveranues Coles.

6. Start of Something Good?

In Week One, Favre hit Jerricho Cotchery in stride for a beautiful 56-yard touchdown pass, making Jets fans believe these types of big plays would be regular occurrences for both Favre and Cotchery.

5. Leon, Leon, Leon

In the first half against New England, Leon Washington caught a touchdown pass and then returned a kick 96 yards for a touchdown en route to the Jets' most exciting win of the season.

4. Big-Play Abe

Elam strip-sacked J.P. Losman, leading to a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Shaun Ellis, as the Jets stole a win at home against the Bills and temporarily saved their season.

3. Game Winner

Coles made an amazing one-handed touchdown reception to beat the Chiefs late in the fourth quarter to prevent the Jets from having a major letdown at home.

2. Beating the Big Brother

Jay Feely kicked a game-winning field goal in overtime to give the Jets a huge win over the Patriots and sole possession of first place in the AFC East.

1. Knockout Punch

Washington ripped off a 61-yard touchdown to put the nail in the coffin against the previously undefeated Titans on the road and moved the Jets to 8-3. For the week after, the Jets became the favorites in the AFC. Oh, how things can change.

The New York Jets' Ideal Offseason

It may be early, but it is still time to look at what a good offseason for the Jets would resemble:

1. Brett Favre retires. No. 4 and his 22 interceptions decide to pack it in and free up $13 million dollars in cap space, helping locker room chemistry, and the Jets turn the page into a new era.

2. Sign Byron Leftwich. Wait, I want to bring Leftwich in and have Brett Favre retire? Yes, I do. The Jets should bring him in to compete with Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff; whomever wins the competition only needs to manage the game since the strength of the team will be the running game and defense. Leftwich played very well as the Steelers' backup this year.

3. Release Eric Barton, David Barrett, Drew Coleman, Bubba Franks, Hank Poteat, and free up some cap space.

4. Renegotiate with Laveranues Coles and draft Percy Harvin in the first round. Coles will soon realize he has limited market value. If the Jets can bring him back and add a playmaker like Harvin, they will have a solid group of receivers when you add in Chansi Stuckey and David Clowney.

5. Sign Bart Scott, Jay Leonhard, and Bryant McFadden. It is probably unrealistic for the Jets to get all three of these guys, but Scott and Leonhard are Ryan guys, who will fit well in the Jets defense. Leonhard wouldn't cost that much and would be a great fit alongside Kerry Rhodes. Scott could replace Barton at inside linebacker and Bryant McFadden is a solid No. 2 corner who could compete with Dwight Lowery for time opposite Darrelle Revis.

Nine Things to Think About for the New York Jet's Offseason

Here are nine things to think about for the New York Jets as the NFL offseason officially begins.

1. When is Brett Favre going to make up his mind?

The Jets organization needs to be fair to itself, the fans, and the rest of the team by making Favre let them know within the next three weeks, to allow them to properly prepare for the combine and free agency. Favre's decision changes the entire complexion of the Jets cap situation and who they will target to add to their team.

2. The Jets have the No. 17 overall pick in the first round and one pick in each subsequent round.

Glancing through a few early mock drafts, I have seen Percy Harvin mentioned a few times, along with a couple of different corners and linebackers. It is still too early to tell who will be on the board when the Jets pick and if they will consider moving up or down. You would have to think the top needs of right now are QB (pending Favre's decision), WR, CB, DL, S, LB, and OL depth.

3. Who is going to be released?

I would imagine that David Barrett, Bubba Franks, Drew Coleman, Mike Nugent, and a few others are absolute goners. What about Laveranues Coles, though? Will the Jets re-negotiate his contract to make him happy? Will seasoned veteran Shaun Ellis return or last year's other defensive end Kenyon Coleman?

4. If Favre retires and clears cap space for the Jets, will they pursue a big-time receiver like Anquan Boldin or T.J. Houshmandzadeh, or will they try to add a few smaller pieces at corner and safety?

5. If the Jets can find some cap space, expect them to pursue a few of Rex Ryan's former players, most notably safety Jay Leonhard and inside linebacker Bart Scott.

6. Going back to the receiver position, the Jets need to decide if they are satisfied with Coles and Jerricho Cotchery as starters.

If they are, then they will need to redo Coles' contract; if not, then Coles will be released, meaning the Jets will have to add somebody through the draft or free agency. I'd be shocked to see the Jets land a big name free agent, which puts pressure on them to come up with somebody in the draft.

7. Hopefully they will re-sign Tony Richardson to another one-year deal. You need a good fullback, and the Jets have one with T-Rich.

8. If Favre retires, are the Jets satisfied letting Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff compete for the starting job?

If not, who are they going to sign? I keep hearing Byron Leftwich's name, and he might make the most sense, because if you think Eric Mangini is sending Derek Anderson here, you are crazy.

9. Will Rex Ryan cut ties with Eric Mangini favorites who haven't produced? Brad Smith, Eric Smith, Sione Pougha—I'm looking at you.

Breaking Down Rex Ryan's New Offense

After going over the defense Rex Ryan inherited last week, let's take a look at the offense which will continue to be run by Brian Schottenheimer. The Jets faded down the stretch, which is why it was surprising to some that the organization wanted Schottenheimer back so badly. He still has alot to prove in terms of in-game adjustments and finding some type of consistency with his play-calling. The Jets strength is running the football, which is something Rex Ryan has stated he wants to do early and often. Without a doubt the biggest question on this team right now is: who will the quarterback be?
Begin Slideshow

Breaking Down Rex Ryan's New Defense

Let's take a look at what new Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan has to work with on the Jets. As a unit, the Jets started out very strong last season but like the rest of the team, fell off down the stretch. Ryan has talked about changing the Jets from a read/react defense into an attacking defense, and stated his belief that they could be a top 5 unit in the league. Yet, does he have the personell to succeed the same way he did in Baltimore?

The Jets have talent on this side of the ball, without question but there are still some glaring holes that need to be filled, most notably: CB, S, and DE. If Brett Favre doesn't retire, the Jets have a very limited amount of money to sign free agents and there is only so much you can do through the draft so for the most part Ryan is stuck with what he has right now.

Anyway, here is a look at the Jets defense:
Begin Slideshow

Rex Ryan Makes Great First Impression with New York Jets

Wow, is the only word I could think to say today after listening to Rex Ryan's first press conference as the head coach of the New York Jets. Maybe it was simply due to the fact that I have been listening to Eric Mangini's dull, repetitive talks with the media the past three years, but Ryan made one hell of a first impression today.

I won't bother copy and pasting too many of his direct quotes, because you need to go listen to this guy speak if you are a Jets fan. You should be ready to strap on the helmet yourself after Ryan speak.

Here is my best summary of what Ryan had to say today:

- Watch out rest of the NFL, because the Jets are coming. They are going to play an aggressive, uptempo defense that attacks teams instead of reacts to them. "If you take a swipe at one of our players, we are going to take two swipes at you."

- Ryan believes the Jets are built to win right now and have the talent to compete for competing for a championship next season. He called Darrelle Revis the best corner in football, referred to Kris Jenkins as a beast in the middle, and cited Kerry Rhodes as being a playmaking, ballhawking safety.

He also complimented the current LB's and stated his belief that he could help get Vernon Gholston going. You think the Jets are fired up to play for this guy?

- He is open to having Brett Favre come back and will meet with him in the coming weeks to discuss his future with the team.

- Mike Pettine is the new defensive coordinator. Mike Westoff and Bill Callahan are staying with the team. He is going to meet with Brian Schottenheimer to discuss him staying on in the next few days.

- The Jets are going to run the football. They aren't going to allow points at home, as he called out the fans to step up and help the defense to create a hostile environment.

- Ryan is confident in himself, very confident actually in himself, his system, and his style of football.

- Ryan's hiring couldn't be any further of a move away from Eric Mangini. The reception to Ryan's words today has been universally positive from all the fan's reactions I have read and obviously the local media is fired up to have a guy like Ryan to cover. Words don't equal wins, but Ryan made some first impression today.

He sold himself very well, and I for one am on board and ready to see a Jets team with some fire and passion take the field. It's a new era in Jets football.

Fired Up About a Fired Up Rex Ryan

I am trying not to get caught up in the Jets' PR and local beat writers machine (they are happy because they will finally be able to get some decent quotes) about the Rex Ryan hiring. Yet it is hard not to feel good about the selection the Jets made for their next head coach.

You love hearing about how much his players in Baltimore loved him. You love hearing current Jets players talking about being excited to play in an attacking defense. The quotes that fired me up the most today were Ryan talking about how he loved Kerry Rhodes and David Harris coming out of college, and how he wants to turn Rhodes into the next Ed Reed.

Rhodes responded to reporters today by talking about how believed he could that kind of player in Ryan's system (nobody can be as good as Reed, but somewhat close would be good enough).

Calvin Pace talked about attacking the quarterback more often, while other players discussed looking forward to having a little more freedom around the team facility.

Nobody can argue the lack of emotion by Eric Mangini and how it rubbed off on this team. They had no energy, no fire, and no passion on the field. Teams are a reflection of their head coach, which means we should be looking forward to a more confident, boisterous football team this year.

I will never forget being at the Miami game at the end of the season and watching the Dolphins tear out of tunnel like world beaters, followed the Jets lazily jogging out, already looking exhausted.

Under Ryan the Jets are going to be coming after people on defense, we know that much. The offense still needs to find a quarterback, but we already know they can run the football. Ryan is a confident, bordering on cocky personality, which may be what this Jets team needs.

There is talent on this team; let's see a little energy and fire on the field. Let's get after the quarterback, let's start hitting people in the mouth, let's hear some emotion in the locker room after a bad loss. There won't be anymore discussion of a consistent approach, but instead of an aggressive, physical approach to the game.

A change of culture is coming to the New York Jets, who will no longer be shrouded in secrecy and silence. There will finally be some energy in the building.

It's Official: Rex Ryan Next Jets Head Coach, Now What?

It was only a matter of time after the Ravens lost to the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game until Rex Ryan would be named the next head coach of the New York Jets. The official press conference is expected on Wednesday, but it is already being reported that Ryan signed a four year contract, so now what?

- Expect Brian Schottenheimer to remain signed on as the offensive coordinator, since he finally realized he wasn't getting a better job anywhere else. Hopefully under Ryan's influence there will be a little more consistency with the play-calling and better in-game adjustments.

- Expect Ravens OLB Coach Mike Pettine to be named the defensive coordinator, who Ryan has called his "right-hand man."

- Expect Mike Westoff to remain the special teams coordinator.

- Favre? I don't know but a decision should be reached in the next few weeks. He would free up a ton of cap space for the Jets if he retired, potentially allowing them to chase a few of Ryan's former players like Jay Leonhard (the Jets badly need a safety) or Bart Scott.

- Even if Favre does retire the Jets won't have the money to make a ton of major moves, meaning they will return with mostly the same personnel. Can Ryan make something out of Vernon Gholston? Can he help David Harris return to his rookie season form and become one of the best middle linebackers in the league? Can he make Kerry Rhodes, Ed Reed Light? Can he make Calvin Pace produce like Terrell Suggs?

Expect some interesting press conferences.

Rex Ryan Is Going To Be the New York Jets' Next Head Coach: Good News?

Unless there is a dramatic turn of events, it is foregone conclusion that Rex Ryan is going to be the next head coach of New York Jets. If the Ravens lose to the Steelers this weekend, expect him to be hired by Tuesday.

There is a reason Steve Spagnuolo hasn't been brought in for a second interview yet and that Brian Schottenheimer hasn't been named the head coach yet when nobody else has interviewed him, Ryan is the guy the Jets want.

From everything I have heard, Ryan is high on the Jets and is willing to keep Schottenheimer as his offensive coordinator and will likely hire Mike Pettine (Ravens OLB Coach) as his defensive coordinator as reported by Rich Cimini of The Daily News.

The question is now is hiring Rex Ryan a smart move? Honestly, I was high on Spagnuolo the whole way but I am starting to drink the Ryan kool-aid. The guy is revered by his players in Baltimore, which is a collection of some of the best defensive players in the league.

He is a fiery guy and plays a 3-4, which of course fits the Jets personnel. I don't think there is any question that he is a great defensive mind, is a respected coach, and will bring some much needed emotion to the Jets. On top of that, there won't be a need to sleep through press conferences anymore.

However there are still some lingering questions about Ryan. The last two defensive coordinators of the Ravens have struggled as head coaches, Marvin Lewis and Mike Nolan. How much credit does Ryan really deserve for the Ravens success?

Could he succeed without Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs, and co? There has to be a reason Ryan has never been a head coach at any level up until now, right? I don't know, we will just have to wait to find out.

Overall, the hiring of Ryan is a sensible one. It wouldn't have been sensible to hire Brian Schottenheimer or Bill Callahan, I know that much. The Jets really can't face too much criticism for hiring a guy who has been on many teams radar for a long time and is currently coaching one of the best defenses in the NFL.

One thing I hope Ryan can do is find a way to teach Brian Schottenheimer to get the ball to Leon Washington, not to throw deep on 4th-and-1, and how to make in-game adjustments.

New York Jets: Five Players Who Need to Step Up Next Year

After a historic spending spree last year, the Jets can only do so much through free agency this year (especially depending on Brett Favre's retirement, which would free up 13 million dollars).

They are in decent position for the draft, with the No. 17 pick in the first round and one pick in every subsequent round.

The point I am making is that the Jets aren't going to be able to make multiple major additions to their team this year, so a good amount of their improvement is going to have to come from within.

Some of that has to come from the new coaching staff. They need to use their players and make sure that they all live up to their expectaions.

Here are five people in particular who aren't going anywhere, who the Jets need more from in 2009:

1. Jerricho Cotchery - 71 catches, 858 yards, 5 touchdowns and one 100 yard game? C'mon now No. 89, we need a little more from you than that, especially coming off a 1,130 yard season with Kellen Clemens and an injured Chad Pennington at quarterback. Cotchery needs to find a way to create more big plays, similar to the way he did in 2006 when he made countless clutch catches and big runs after the catch. He showed a few flashes this year, (most notably in New England) but the Jets need him to become a consistent 1,000 yard guy.

2. Kerry Rhodes - Rhodes received a fat new contract and responded by having Abram Elam make more big plays than him. Some of the blame goes to the coaching staff, but he needs to produce more than 1 sack and 2 INT's. I know he isn't in the same league as Ed Reed, (because nobody is) but you would hope under Rex Ryan (if he is hired) that he could produce a few more impact plays.

3. Vernon Gholston - The Jets need something from the sixth overall selection. They drafted him to be a DeMarcus Ware/Terrell Suggs type player. I don't know if he will ever come near that level, but he needs to find some way to generate some type of pass rush next year. Is it so much to ask for 8-10 sacks from him next year, so we could finally cut ties with Bryan Thomas?

4. Leon Washington - It isn't Leon's fault. The Jets need more from him next year and it is the coaching staff's fault. If for some reason Brian Schottenheimer returns next year as the Offensive Coordinator, on that lamented paper he carries he needs to have this written down: No. 29 is very, very good. GET HIM THE BALL. Washington needs to be a Kick Returner and receiving a minimum of 15 touches a game on offense.

5. Dustin Keller - The rookie showed how he could be game changer against New England and Tennessee last year, but fell off down the stretch. I doubt the Jets are able to bring in Anquan Boldin or TJ Houshmanzedah next year through free agency. The Jets can't count on a rookie Wide Receiver to be a legit No. 1 right away, which means Keller will the Jets most dynamic pass catcher next year. He has the talent to be a 70 catch, 800-900 yard, 8 touchdown guy if he can keep improving and is used properly.
