Antonio McDyess Headed to San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonion Express-News and Yahoo! Sports have both reported the San Antonio Spurs as the frontrunner to sign the 6'9" power forward, Antonio McDyess.

The Spurs have offered him a three-year deal at the mid-level exemption with the last year partially guaranteed. With McDyess reportedly retiring in two years, this would mean he would basically be getting a year of paid vacation.

There has been a lot of speculation about weather the Spurs should sign him. Most of the argument has to do with McDyess' age and athleticism. However, McDyess is only 10 days older than Rasheed Wallace, and he is averaging almost 10 points and 10 rebounds a night, which is about three more rebounds than 'Sheed, a category the Spurs are desperately looking to improve.

Also, most of our post players are young; DeJuan Blair is a rookie, Marcus Haislip played only three years in the NBA and then went to Europe, and Ian Mahinimi has never actually been on an NBA team for a full season without being hurt. That's not to say that these players aren't amazing talents, but they are young and need to have a veteran, besides Tim Duncan who can teach them the game.

All in all, I believe McDyess will be an amazing addition to the Spurs. After all, we do have plenty of youth to make up for his age now.

Big Baby To Sign With San Antonio?

I doubt it. The Spurs are looking for a veteran who can rebound and play defense. Big Baby only grabs around nine percent of all possible rebounds. He averaged only 5.6 rebounds and .2 blocks. That's one block every five games! I truly believe the only possible way he ends up in San Antonio is if they can sign both him and Drew Gooden, which is highly unlikely.

One more thing is that the Spurs already have a player that plays the exact same style as Big Baby in Dejuan Blair. Blair may even prove to be better at it.

As of right now, the only serious plans I have heard are: Plan A: Sign Antonio McDyess, or plan B: Sign Drew Gooden. Both are higher priority, both are higher caliber and both would more likely end up in San Antonio than Davis. Anything else would be highly unlikely.

Top 5 Greatest Clutch Players

A little while ago, I had a conversation about the NBA's best clutch players. By that I mean who would you want with the ball with the last seconds of the game with clock winding down. Of course, his list was a little different than mine, but it made me think.

5. Tracy McGrady

He would have been higher, but his knees have him sidelined and he really isn't the same player he was a couple of years ago. Still, 13 points in 35 seconds is enough to put him into my all-time top five.

4. Derek Fisher

If there is a player more calm, cool and collected in the last few seconds of a game, I haven't seen him. And after the .4-second shot against the Spurs in 2004, he has carved his name into stone as clutch legend.

3. Manu Ginobili

He also would have been higher, and probably will be higher next season, but as of right now his play is not up to par. And yet he has still proved he can almost always score the game winner, and if he doesn't score he'll get to the line.

2. Dwyane Wade

If he doesn't make the winning shot, he'll get to the line, and in an exiting fashion.

1. Kobe Bryant

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I don't think he's the best player in the NBA, but he has the best jump shot in the league, and it shows in crunch time. It seems that no opponents lead is safe until the final buzzer sounds, no matter how great it is.

Spurs Next Step After Rasheed

Acordinig to ESPN, Sheed will cancel meetings with San Antonio and Orlando, and will commit to wear green for the next two seasons. This leaves a gapping hole in spurs plans, doesn't it? However, the spurs lack of over the top commitment to Wallace makes me all the more convinced that the Spurs have a plan up their sleeves.

As most know by now the spurs back up plan is Antonio McDyess, who is almost averaging a double double with nearly 10 points and 10 rebounds a game; not a bad plan B is it? But Antonio has already been courted by other teams, and it might be a little to late to show a player how much we need him this late into free agency.

Gary Tanguay, reported soon after the Rasheed signing that the Celtics would be interested in signing suns forward grant hill, and if this were to happen then big baby,Glen Davis would most likely end up in San Antonio for only part of the MLE. And now, two days away from the official signing period, there has been no reported teams lookinig at Drew Gooden. One or both of these players would make me a happy guy.

Drew, who played 19 regular season games and 4 post season games has proven two things to me. One, he has the basketball IQ of my dead hamster, and two, he is an athletic young post who is willing to kill himself to win a game. So, although he would need to improve drastically on defence, he is a good fit for the spurs, who are in desperate need of a veteran big man.

Glen Davis however, would be at a higher priority. Although he really isn't the " veteran" that can help timmy in teaching the younger, newer guys, he is an amazing low post force who can grab rebounds as well as score. And if we could manage to sign both of these men(which i must say is highly unlikely, but still a possibility) we would be able to move Bonner to his natural position and add much needed depth on the wing.

Another possibility is a trade, which would need to include at least three of our role players or one of our stars. This could nearly whip us clean of all veteran role players. In all honesty, this is my least favorite idea. We need these experienced role players (Finely and Bonner or even Ginobili) more than the inexperienced Mahinimi or Blair or any other rookie players which would have to become our bench. In other words, we would become too young and timmy wouldn't be teaching, he would be baby sitting.

However that would open up the possibility of Tyson Chandler, Marcus Camby, or even David West.

So however it is done, the spurs have a hole to fill before we can say that we can beat the Lakers or any other contender, And its a big tall hole.
