Why the Baltimore Ravens Will Defeat the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLIV

Sunday February 7 is a long way away, but suggesting the Ravens and Packers will meet at Dolphin Stadium on this day isn't that much of a stretch.

There are about four or five power teams in the AFC, but the NFC is a little harder to figure out. The NFC may not be as strong at the top of the conference, but they are much more deep. The AFC has the struggling teams like the Chiefs, Raiders, Broncos, Jaguars and Browns. The NFC has the Rams, Lions, and Buccs.

To pick from the rest of the NFC is like picking a needle in a stack of needles. There are many teams that are all about equal, unlike the Pats, Colts, Steelers, and Ravens in the AFC.

To look at this potential Super Bowl match up, let's explore the skill position match ups.

In the battle of the quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers wins this rather easily. While Flacco was a hit last year, he rarely threw for big yards, just short slants and screen passes, often dumping it off to the running back. Rodgers has proven that he is more than capable of leading the Packers to where they want to go.

In the battle of the running backs, the Ravens get the slight edge. With Willis McGahee (if healthy) and emerging back Ray Rice, the Ravens have always been able to establish a pretty good ground attack. The Packers have Ryan Grant, who has shown great flashes, but there really isn't much help behind him.

In the wide receiver category, it could be considered a draw. Both teams have proven big play receivers, but the Packers have the younger core group. Greg Jennings is a very underrated player, but one of the best in the game today. Speaking of underrated, that is the middle name of Derrick Mason. Mason's entire career has been virtually overlooked as he has been consistently great for the Ravens every year.

In the Defensive matchups, look for the Ravens to blow the Packers out of the water here, right? Not exactly. The Packers have a pretty good defense, and a secondary that can contend with anyone else in the league. While the secondary may be older, the linebackers have established themselves as one of the best young linebackers in the NFL.

The Ravens defense is still the Ravens defense, and they will get the edge in this category as well. There is no greater ball hawk in the NFL than Ed Reed, and he showed that late in the season last year. Ray Lewis may not be the Ray Lewis we all remember, but he is still a thunderous bolt of talent. The corners for Baltimore have grown up, and the speed should keep them from giving up big plays.

In the special teams category, the Ravens have a big edge. While Mason Crosby is one of the best kickers in the game, the return game and kick-blocking ability of the Ravens wins out.

If Ray Rice can emerge as a solid dual threat to a healthy Willis McGahee, the Ravens should be able to win this game. The big key will be the play of Joe Flacco. If he can become more than just a managing quarterback, the Ravens will lock up the Super Bowl.

Of course this extremely gut-feeling prediction is sure to go wrong, and with all the injuries and surprises the NFL has to offer, neither of these teams will probably make the playoffs. Although if the Super Bowl does come down to these two teams, I can go back to this article and gloat more than T.O. after catching a touchdown.

So Long, Farewell B/R

In what seemed like a long friendship between b/r and myself, I now must cut short.

I joined b/r a few months ago and really enjoyed all it had to offer. My first few articles were simple slide shows, but as time went on, I really developed a new type of writing. I didn't know I had it in me, and I really enjoyed the writing, as well as the research.

After I reached my 50th article, I decided to apply for an opening for a Featured Columnist on the NASCAR page. After a few days, I received an e-mail stating that I was not going to get the position.

I kept my head up, and a couple of weeks later, I saw there was another Featured Columnist opening for the Indianapolis Colts, a team in which I cover in depth, and my hometown NFL team.

After applying for that position and receiving the same response, I have finally decided to call it quits on b/r.

I may be throwing in the towel, raising the white flag, or whatever, but I have some other things lined up that will actually pay me for my writing.

I will continue to write regularly on the Colts' blog, and I will begin covering the Pacers in depth on a different website as well.

It was great getting to know everyone, and there are some really talented people on this website, and I encourage you all to explore your options, and do what is best for yourself.

If you ever feel your writing isn't getting enough recognition, or it could be better served on another site, go for it!

I will be closing my account shortly after this final post, but I want to thank everyone who helped get me started on this website, as well as those who were able to guide me through other doors to get to where I am now.

If you ever need to get in touch with me about some work or whatever, you can reach me at: chadsmith5@yahoo.com

Thanks again to all of you that helped me in my short time here at b/r and with my writing in general.

Take care, and goodnight.

Hmmm...A Closer Look at the Indianapolis Colts' Schedule

The NFL announces the schedules, and we glance through to see who is coming to our house, and where our team must play on the road.

After that, there is a long wait just to get to training camps. The roster becomes the main focus, and with the Indianapolis Colts, there is the coaching change on top of that.

With Jim Caldwell coming in after Tony Dungy decided to pursue other endeavors, many questioned if anything would change. "Well he is just an extension of Coach Dungy," many people said, but it still remains to be seen just how different he will be during the ups and downs of the season.

Aside from the coaching focus, there is the health of Peyton Manning, Bob Sanders, and pretty much everyone else on the team it seems. Health concerns have been the story of the Colts for the past few seasons.

Now let’s look at another aspect of the upcoming season: the schedule for the Colts.

Beginning the season at home on a Sunday afternoon against a well-known Jacksonville Jaguars team should be comforting. It is a big game though, because the division will be as tough as ever this year. The Jaguars had an awful season last year, but they have added some new players, and they too are now healthy.

After the first week jitters are gone, the Colts head to Miami to take on the Dolphins and their Wildcat offense on Monday Night Football. The Colts live for the prime-time games, and this one will be no exception. It is their only Monday Night Football appearance this year, and the weather (rain) will play a big factor in this one.

The third week of the season finds the Colts traveling to Arizona to take on the defending NFC champion Cardinals. Luckily for the Colts, this game will be played indoors where they are quite familiar with the field. This should be a great game not only because of the offenses, but both teams are fundamentally sound.

Finally the Colts will come home the following week and take on a reloaded Seahawks team. If this team is healthy, they can be dangerous. They have new weapons on both sides of the ball that could give the Colts fits. If this game were at Seattle, I would be worried, but playing at Lucas Oil should help the Colts in this one.

Sunday Night Football has a great game the next week, with the division rivals squaring off in Tennessee as the Titans host the Colts. The Titans have one of, if not the best secondary in the NFL. The Titans have given the Colts a lot of trouble the last few years, and this one will be no exception.

The Colts get their bye week here in Week Six.

After getting some rest, the Colts make the short trip to St. Louis to handle a less-than-impressive Rams squad.

The next three weeks, the Colts will be playing at home, but two of the three will be tough games. The San Francisco 49ers come first, which shouldn’t be too bad, but then the up-and-coming Houston Texans come to town for a divisional game. After that, it is what is now regarded as one of the best games of the season; the New England Patriots vs. the Colts.

These two have a short history, but what a history it is. Tom Brady and Manning will (hopefully) square off in a game that looks to pick up where it left off after the '07 game.

Brady is back, and this game has that good feel to it again. It’s just not the same with Brady not playing.

After that tough test, comes another. The Colts travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens in one of the best games of the year. The Colts and the city of Baltimore go way back, and the fans as well as the players, will be jacked up for this one.

The rest of the season; @ Houston, vs. Tennessee, vs. Denver, @ Jacksonville, vs. New York Jets, and @ Buffalo aren’t the marquee games that the first half of the season presents, but that will be a good thing for the Colts.

They Colts will need as much rest as they can get, and depending on injuries and trades around the league, the season could look a lot different than it does now. The Colts will look to win enough games, then look to rest starters going into the final game against the Bills, but lucky for us, that is a long, long way away.

Ranking the Best NFL Team at Every Position

What team has the most talent and depth at any respected position?

Taking a look at the positions, there were many factors that helped me determine who to list.

There have been some off-season moves that have helped turn the tide from a season ago.

Obviously not everyone will agree with these picks, I want to hear from you, what team should be replaced for the respected position?

Starting with the offense:
Begin Slideshow

Predicting the NFL's Division Winners in 2009

It is still the preseason, so there is still time to make predictions.

I didn't make these predictions based upon any preseason games that I have seen so far this year.

These are just predictions, and though some of them seem really obvious, the NFL always has a way of surprising us.

Which team will bust out and take control of their division? Can the Titans or Texans finally get over on the Colts? Will the Cardinals repeat their success from last year? How will the Favre signing in Minnesota play a role in the NFC North?

Here are the answers (that are sure to be wrong).
Begin Slideshow

Top Five NFL Teams Needing New Stadiums

Look around at the Cowboys new stadium, the Cardinals stadium, as well as the Texans and Colts' new facilities.

Those are some great pieces of work, but then there are those that are on the opposite side.

These five NFL teams are in desperate need of a new stadium...soon.

With today's economy, it isn't looking good for any of these teams, and this could mean some really nasty buildings will only get worse in the coming years.

Sorry to the fans that will have to put up with these stadiums for the next several years. Here they are in no particular order.
Begin Slideshow

Sharpie 500 Provides Little Drama, Great Racing

When Kyle Busch ends up in the Winners Circle, that usually means there won't be any post-race drama.

This was the case as Kyle was able to hold off Mark Martin for the win at Bristol tonight. Marcos Ambrose finished with an impressive third place.

With a mishap on pit road late in the race, Jimmy Johnson gave up the lead, and it essentially came down to Kyle and Mark. With Kyle getting the run off the outside lane, it was difficult for Mark (or anyone for that matter) to pass on the bottom.

Usually Bristol is all about tempers flaring and drivers giving payback. Now that the "Race for the Chase" is only two races away, everyone seems to be able to keep their cool and play nice.

Just another reason I hate the Chase, but that's a story for a different time.

There were less accidents than usual at Thunder Alley, but that is also due to more skilled drivers. These guys are now finding out how to drive this Car of Tomorrow, and everyone seems to know what it can and can not do.

Tony Stewart had one of the roughest nights of anyone. From the beginning, his troubles started with his radio not working. He could hear his crew but they could not hear him. He went a couple of laps down early in the race and was a non-factor for the entire event.

There was some serious movement in the point standings, which was basically what everyone was talking about.

No sparks were flying tonight, no angry words spoke on ESPN after the race, and no pushing or shoving on pit road. I guess that's what happens when a happy Kyle Busch gets to Victory Lane.

Former Colts Still Looking For Work

Once part of the "Big 3" in the Colts offense, two veterans now find themselves out of work.

Marvin Harrison is the greatest receiver in the Colts franchise, and one of the best in NFL history. Edgerrin James was the Indianapolis rushing attack. After his first few seasons in the league, many thought he was a sure Hall-of-Famer

Edgerrin left for Arizona because of money the year before the Colts won their only Super Bowl, and Marvin refused to take less money to stay with the Colts this offseason. Both are now looking for new teams as Edgerrin was let go by the Cardinals last year.

Dubbed the "Big Three" in Indianapolis, the two paired with Peyton Manning to form one of the greatest offenses the NFL since the Greatest Show on Turf.

Edgerrin's career numbers have gone down since leaving the Colts, and that shouldn't come as a surprise. Not only were the Colts able to pile up the numbers on offense, but the Cardinals have never been a running team, especially now with the Warner to Fitzgerald combination.

Marvin has seen his numbers decline over the last couple of years and many people thought he would retire as a Colt this or next season. A guy that has never been one to talk with the media, Marvin opted to take his game elsewhere and look for another team, instead of staying with the team that got him his Super Bowl ring, as well as a spot in the Hall-of-Fame some day.

I think that both players still have something left in them, especially Edgerrin. They both have enough to help whatever team they join, they just won't be the same player they once were, which is to be expected.

This just shows that the people in the Colts organization really know how to use their players, and they know how to fit them into the system.

If you find yourself as a Pro-Bowl player for a team that always contends for a Super Bowl, why leave? I hope Reggie and Bob are reading this...

The New Cowboys Stadium: The Spaceship in Arlington

The new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington was built for many different types of events, but really, it is to showcase America's team.

The venue is the latest state-of-the-art stadium to open its doors. Tonight, the Cowboys hosted a preseason game against the Titans in which they displayed the beautiful architecture.

Texas Stadium has been the home of the Cowboys since 1971, but tonight, the $1 billion stadium steps in to take it's place—just in a different city.

There is a 60-yard-wide High-Definition TV in this place. Where have you seen that before?

If you guessed nowhere in the world, you are correct.

With many teams wanting a new stadium, and others needing one badly, the Cowboys should realize that they have something special. More importantly, the city of Arlington should be thanking their lucky stars that this was able to be done in today's economy.

Being from Indianapolis, I can remember what it was like last year when we opened our doors for our home opener during the preseason. Everyone was walking around like a homeless guy that just walked into LeBron James' mansion.

At Lucas Oil Stadium, we have big screen TVs, spacious seating, and new everything. People are still talking about how nice it is, and how amazing it is to watch the roof and the windows open before the game.

I can only imagine what the fans inside the new Cowboys Stadium are seeing as they walk around tonight.

More to Indianapolis Colts' Secondary Than "Bobzilla"

What is the first name that comes to mind when mentioning the Colts' defense.

Most would say it would be Bob Sanders, while others say Dwight Freeney. Both defensive stars will have major implications on how the Colts fare this season. Health has always been the No. 1 issue with both of them, and that won't change this year.

The fact is, as much time as Sanders has missed over his career, the Colts have had success in finding more than capable replacements in the secondary.

In 2004, 2006, and 2008, Sanders only played in 16 total games, basically missing two entire seasons. In 2005 he played 14 games and went to his first Pro Bowl, while the 15 games he played in 2007 earned him the Defensive Player of the Year award.

In Sanders' absence, there were a combination of replacements, and this year is no exception. Behind him on the depth chart sits third-year player Melvin Bullitt.

Bullitt played a lot last season filling in for Sanders, and recorded 77 total tackles. He also managed to grab four interceptions. Bullitt will likely see some more time this year, as the Colts have started to limit Sanders' time on the field.

At the other safety position, the Colts have Antoine Bethea. He broke a bone in his hand a week ago in training camp, but after getting fit for a cast, he looks to get back on the field.

Bethea is a lesser known name in some cities, but he is a household name in Indianapolis. Entering his fourth year, Bethea has recorded 327 total tackles and has grabbed seven interceptions.

Behind Antoine is Matt Giordano, who is entering his fifth year in the league. He has played sparingly throughout his career, but has proved he belongs in this talented group.

At the corner positions, there is an abundance of talent.

It all starts with Marlin Jackson, the hero of the Colts' Super Bowl year as he made the game-winning interception in the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots.

Jackson is entering his fifth year in the league after missing most of last season with a knee injury. In 2007, he recorded 112 total tackles for the Colts. Marlin has shown over the last few years that he is the best corner on the team.

Filling in for Jackson last season was Tim Jennings, who is now entering his fourth year in the NFL. He started the final 12 games for the Colts last season, and ended up with 78 tackles and two interceptions.

Jennings has great potential and will probably see some quality time on the field again this year. If Jackson is hampered by his knee again this year, look for him to be in the starting corner spot.

The other starter at corner for the Colts is Kelvin Hayden.

In 2007, Hayden started every game of the season for the Colts, and recorded 117 tackles and had three interceptions. He had three interceptions last season as well but missed the end of the season due to injury.

Now in his fifth season, Hayden looks to get back to his potential if he can stay healthy. If he misses any time this year, or needs some rest, his potential replacement at the position will likely be Dante Hughes.

Hughes is just now entering his third year in the league, and is picking up things quickly in Indianapolis. The other candidate for this back up corner position will be Jerraud Powers.

Powers was drafted in the third round by the Colts this past offseason. He was a two-year starter at Auburn, and is a gifted athlete. He will challenge for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart along with Hughes.

Whether it be the starters or the back up guys, the Colts have a young and talented secondary. They will rely heavily on their depth to carry them this season. The injury bug has already found it's way back to the Colts' locker room this season, so all of these guys will have to be on their toes.

NFL Quarterback Battles: Winners and Losers

Preseason is here, and the training camps will come to a close before we know it. So the time has come to name your starting QB.

There are many quarterback competitions going on around the league, and most of them are very close.

Most of the teams aren't serious playoff contenders, but the future of the franchise depends on who the coach decides to hand the keys to.
Begin Slideshow

Top 10: Scariest Defensive Players in the NFL

The ball is snapped...now you have the ball...in the back of your mind you ask yourself...where is he?

The guy that nobody wants to see when they have the ball. The most intimidating force on the defensive side of the ball.

Whether it be a fierce linebacker, a big hitting safety, or a huge defensive lineman...it all hurts the same.

I have compiled my own list of the Top Ten scariest defensive players to ever step foot on an NFL field.

These are guys you would never want to run into in a dark alley...unless you knew they were on your side. Feel free to add to this list as you see fit.
Begin Slideshow

Secondary To None: The NFL's Breakout Defensive Backs for 2009

There are certain positions in the NFL that are harder than others.

Everyone knows the quarterback position is the most glamorous, and the wide receiver can be the "all about me" position. The running back position is full of stars, and linebackers are always THE face of a defense.

Then there are the defensive backs.

The defensive backs are primarily responsible for big plays, and are always in the spotlight when something goes wrong.

Not only is it hard to cover the big tall monster receivers, but then having to cover the small, quicker, faster guys the next play. They must also play the game while trying not to commit a defensive penalty, which is almost impossible these days.

There are the elite guys like Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, Bob Sanders, Champ Bailey, Nnamdi Asomugha, and Adrian Wilson. Then there are the next guys in line. These guys still need to be groomed, but they are the key to the franchise's success for the future.

Feel free to comment on who YOU think will be some other breakout players in the secondary this season.
Begin Slideshow

Top 5 Rivalries in the NFL

Red Sox and Yankees, Duke and Carolina, Lakers and Celtics, Michigan and Ohio State.

Rivalries are one of the best thing about sports. They provide the most drama and emotion in a particular game. Everyone is on the big stage, and they are giving it their all.

Tempers are tested and emotions are never kept in check. The fights are remembered not only on tape, but etched in our minds forever.

The NFL is no different in that they actually provide some of the best rivalries, because football is such a violent sport. The NFL goes way back, so there is a lot of history to provide great rivalries.

Looking at my Top Five rivalries in the NFL, there will be debate, and their will be questioning...but isn't that why I wrote it?
Begin Slideshow

Predicting the Top 5 at Watkins Glen

This Sunday's race at Watkins Glen is sure to be a thriller.

The new double file restarts should add some excitement to an already jam packed race. As the race for the Chase heats up, this road course could make or break many drivers and teams.

Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart lead all current drivers with four wins each at the Glen. When predicting the Top 5 for this race, one should always keep them in their thoughts.

Kyle Bush is feeling the heat for the Chase, but he comes to a track where he has been strong, finishing in the top 10 each of the last three years, including a win last year.

Mark Martin will be interesting to watch because he hasn't raced here since 2006, where he finished 20th. Fan Favorite Boris Said will also be interesting to watch, his last three finishes here; 31st, 14th, and 24th.

This might not be the day for Hendrick Motorsports because besides Martin and Dale Jr not having recent success, Jeff Gordon actually only has one Top 10 finish in the last five years. And the other guy (3-time Cup Champ) Jimmie Johnson has never won a road course race.
Begin Slideshow

Top 10 Offensive Bounce-Back Players in '09

The 2008 NFL season was not kind to these players listed.

My Updated Sports Bucket List

I may only be 23, but as each year passes by, I find myself with a new appreciation for certain events in sports.

You hear people talk about how great the game was and how much they enjoyed the atmosphere, but you can't really relate to it. With the HD TVs that we have today, many of us would prefer to watch the game on our comfortable couch with our free food.

With the recent amount of new stadiums that have been built (Yankees, Cowboys) it really makes you wish you were there at least once...so you could just say you've been there.

Some of these I have already crossed off my list, but the others, I need to make time for.

Let me know what you would add to this. What are some of the sporting events that you would like to experience before your time is up?
Begin Slideshow

Predicting the Top 5 at Pocono

The race is just a couple of hours away...and I already know the results.

Okay, so this is merely a guesser's opinion of what will happen, but isn't that what we all do?

There is no way to tell if someone will catch a break on a pit stop before a yellow, win the race with no fuel left in the tank, or who will have engine/pit speeding problems.

If things go well as far as cautions/wrecks/malfunctions, then these five drivers should finish in order...but the fact is these things do happen, which is why we watch!

Don't slam me after the race after I get all of these drivers wrong, and I promise not to gloat after I get them all right.

Should be some great racing today, enjoy the race.
Begin Slideshow

Top 20 NASCAR Drivers of All-Time

The history of NASCAR is something that has been well documented over the years.

The cars, drivers, teams, and owners have all been covered extensively throughout their careers. Whether it be by wins or number of championships, athletes will always be ranked. Why should NASCAR drivers be any different?

No matter what anyone tells you, NASCAR drivers are indeed athletes, and if you don't believe so, check out Carl Edwards' ESPN The Magazine cover.

The top drivers might be debatable, but we should also recognize the other truly great drivers over the long history of NASCAR.
Begin Slideshow

NASCAR Goes to the Muscle Car

Who doesn't love the Ford Mustang, the Dodge Challenger, and the Chevy Camaro? We know NASCAR does.

It was recently announced the Ford will be going to the Mustang for the Nationwide series in 2011. A meeting was held with 125 fabricators and crew chiefs to discuss the new body in the series.

It is expected that Toyota will stay with the Camry, and Chevrolet will stay with the Impala SS (even though many thought they would go to the Camaro). Ford will be going with the famed Mustang, and Dodge will be rolling out the Challenger (pictured above).

By now most everyone has seen the pictures of the computer generated model of the Nationwide Series Ford Mustang. I found this Challenger picture after digging through a few websites.

Ford said that they would like to keep the Nationwide series cars a little different from the Sprint Cup cars. They are adopting the "Muscle Cars" for the Nationwide series.

The Nationwide series car is going to look and drive differently from the Sprint Cup COT.

The spring race at Talladega is the expected appearance of these new cars for the Nationwide series, though that might change. Many fans are excited and anticipating great things for the Challenger coming back into the sport.

This will be the first time that the Mustang will be featured in any series in NASCAR.

Ferrari announced that Schumacher had agreed to get back in the cockpit until Massa is ready to return, which may be until the end of this season. The next race is the European Grand Prix on Aug. 21 in Spain.

Schumacher said: "Though it is true that the Formula One chapter has long been closed for me, it is also true that, for team loyalty reasons, I cannot ignore that unfortunate situation, but as the competitor I am, I also very much look forward to facing this challenge."

Ferrari said Schumacher will undergo a special training program in the coming days to determine whether he will be able to drive in Spain. There are six races left in the season, and Schumacher is 40 years old.

"Thank God all news concerning Felipe is positive. I wish him all the best again," Schumacher wrote on his Web site.

Schumacher, who had 91 wins in 250 F1 races starts, is still a consultant for Ferrari. Since retiring in October 2006, he has raced occasionally in a motorcycling series but was injured in a crash in February.

Schumacher won his first two F1 titles with the Benetton team. He joined Ferrari in 1996 and won five straight championships.

Top 10 Tracks in NASCAR

The excitement of NASCAR travels all across the country.

Different venues make for different racing styles, and the tracks themselves offer a unique view of this amazingly popular sport.

Judging the top ten tracks on the NASCAR schedule is tough and controversial, but I have compiled my list for display.

I have rated these on a scale that includes popularity, dramatic racing style, history, speed, and most fan friendly.

This is just my opinion, and I would like to read your thoughts on what is considered the best track on the schedule.
Begin Slideshow

Jamaal Tinsley Is an Ex-Pacer...Finally

Pacers fans....rejoice!

It has finally happened, the Pacers have gotten rid of troubled guard Jamaal Tinsley. The Pacers waived him on Wednesday, and it was submitted to the NBA today. If he clears waivers in seven days, he will become a free agent.

Tinsley was the last remaining Pacer to take part in the hideous 2004 brawl at the Palace in Detroit.

Legal problems and injuries have been the main story behind Tinsley. He was owed approximately $14.7 million over the next couple years.

In a 14-month stretch, he was involved in three different late night conflicts: A strip-club incident in '06, a bar fight in '07, and a gun fight by a downtown Indianapolis hotel in December of '07.

Tinsley wasn't shooting, but he was being shot at, and although he got away uninjured, the Pacers' equipment manager suffered two gunshot wounds to the elbows.

The Pacers would not comment on the buyout situation, but it has been reported that it was around $10 million.

With the last trouble maker finally gone from the Pacers roster, things in Indy look so much brighter. After I heard the news break, the sky seemed to open up, the sun was shining on my face, and the temperature kicked up to a comfortable 75 degrees.

All kidding aside, the Pacers are finally in great shape and they can get rid of this clown once and for all.

Tinsley's agent said there have been multiple teams interested in signing Tinsley, but who knows how reliable that statement is. He hasn't played in three years, and he hasn't been healthy pretty much his whole career.

Whatever team finally decides to add him to the roster...good luck to you.

Interesting NFL Logos

It is getting late, and I find myself bored once again.

I decided to take a look at some old logos for some NFL teams, and some new logos that were rejected. I soon found out I had compiled quite a list of these. It was time for a slide show!

Some of these are pretty goofy because they are so old, while others (like the Seahawks) logo are really awesome, and better than the one they have now.

Take a few minutes and scroll through some of these amazing logos, and comment on which one is your favorite, and if teams should switch from their current logo.
Begin Slideshow

Predicting the 2009 NFL Award Winners

Let's face it, we are all starving for football right now.

The 2009 NFL season will be here soon (not soon enough) and it's time to start predictions.

With many people writing about the standings and playoffs and breakout players, I decided to write my next piece on the award winners of this season.

These are strictly based on my personal feelings of how the teams/players will fare this year. I know at the end of the year I may look back on this and laugh, but for now, I would just really like to talk football, do you blame me?
Begin Slideshow

Top 15 Sports Movie Characters

After my recent slide show on the Top 10 Sports Movies of All-Time, I decided to make another slide show about the characters in some of those movies.

I am probably forgetting a bunch, but I have compiled a list of 15.

Some characters are fictional, and some are real life people. Either way, they are a part of this list.

I'm sure you will let me know, without needing a reminder, to list the ones that I have forgotten about.

Go back in time and think about those great sports movies, and think about the characters that remind you of them.
Begin Slideshow

Ghosts of The Game: Players I Never Saw

One of the greatest things about sports is their history. The players of the past have affected all of the players of today in a special way.

There have been several generations of athletes, and with those athletes are the fans that followed them throughout their careers. The fans remember everything about them, and the experiences they had of them.

What about the youthful generation of today? What about those of us born in the mid-to-late '80s that missed so much? All we have are the highlights and stories of others from those historic eras.

As a fan today, I feel grateful that I can watch Peyton Manning and Tom Brady duel it out right before my eyes and feel the anticipation that leads up to the game.

I appreciate the fact that I can watch LeBron James and Kobe Bryant go head-to-head as they play out their sure-fire Hall of Fame careers.

While I know I am fortunate to watch these Hall of Famers play during their careers, I can't help but think about all I have missed. I may have been alive during some of these historic events, but not old enough to remember any of them.

Whether it be baseball, football, or basketball, there are so many moments that I was not able to experience first hand.

The Miracle on Ice is one of the greatest moments in all of sports. I was still five years away from being born when it took place.

In 1969, Joe Namath guaranteed a Super Bowl victory when his Jets were 18-point underdogs. They went on to win the game. That was 16 years before my birth.

Ali vs Frazier, 1971. All I can do is listen to the stories and read about it in books.

Wayne Gretzky becomes the NHL's all-time leading scorer as I turn four years old.

In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scores 100 points in a game. My only memory of that event is the hand-written "100" sign he is holding up in that famous picture.

In 1983, I missed Jimmy V and N.C. State pull off one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history.

Jack Nicklaus wins his last Masters Title in 1986. I have the videos on the Internet to watch that event.

All I know about John Wooden is he was the greatest coach in men's college basketball. I know that because I read about him in a book and on the Internet.

In 1979, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird squared off in the college basketball championship. One of the greatest rivalries in basketball history, just another moment that I wasn't alive for.

Pete Rose was banned from baseball in 1989, three years before I became a Cincinnati Reds fan.

Not only are these some of the moments that I wasn't around for, but some of the greatest athletes in history were before my time.

In baseball, I never got to watch any of these famous players live; Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, Yogi Berra, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, Stan Musial, Cy Young.

I don't think we appreciate our past enough in sports today. We are all caught up on today's players and want to talk about how much better they are than players of the past.

As a huge basketball fan, it is sad to realize that I never got to see any of these players during their prime; Bob Cousy, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Willis Reed, "Pistol" Pete Marovich, Kareem, Bird, Magic, Dr. J, Moses Malone.

I can find endless amounts of game footage and pictures with stories, but nothing will ever compare to the thrill that the older generations got to experience.

In football, some of the players from the past are still considered some of the best to ever play the game. I also missed out on these players during their football careers; Joe Namath, Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Terry Bradshaw, Bart Starr, Roger Staubach, OJ Simpson, Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Walter Payton, Johnny Unitas, Jim Brown.

To those of us born in the late '80s, we look back on these players and respect them, but we don't know what it was like to watch them on a weekly basis. The story lines that build up before each game, and what the players were like to meet in person.

The generations before us know so much more about these players than we ever will, and lucky for us, they are kind enough to share stories about them with us.

There seems to be somewhat of an urban legend feel with some of these athletes, because all we hear are stories. We don't get to interview them, or hang out with them before or after games.

Some stories about Babe Ruth are so astonishing, but we don't know if they are real or made up.

What I am getting at is that we should remember those players from the past and appreciate them, but we must also cherish the time we have with today's athletes, because they will just be memories to our children some day.

We will have the privilege of telling our children and grandchildren about the Kobe Bryant's of the world. We will tell them stories about the great Peyton Manning and Randy Moss.

Someday when these players are all gone, and replaced with the next generation of athletes, we will just have our memories to serve us during our storytelling.

We can have all the film and interviews in the world, but nothing will ever be like the real encounters that we are having today.

My generation will never really get to know any of the past players mentioned in this article. We won't ever be able to feel the emotion that was felt during those days. That is something we will never be able to share with the older generations.

What we have today is the opportunity to watch and be grateful of what is in front of our eyes. We need to be thankful for what we do have, but also continue to respect those ghosts of the game that came before us.

It is scary to think that in 10 years, teenagers won't know who Michael Jordan was. They will know his name, and see his highlights, but they will never feel what we felt when he hit that shot over Craig Ehlo.

In 15 or 20 years, kids will be asking what Tiger Woods was like as a player in his prime.

It sounds crazy right now, but these players of today will soon be just a memory; a memory that we will be lucky to share with the next generation.

Top 10 Sports Movies Ever Made

Sports can provide drama, and Hollywood knows how to make the best drama in sports.

Whether it's a true story, or something completely absurd, these movies keep our attention and stay with us in our memories forever. Trying to rank the best ten is never easy, and always debatable.

For that reason, let me just go ahead and tell you some notables that didn't make the list, so you won't be shocked when you get to the end. Some that did not make the cut were; White Men Can't Jump, Bad News Bears, 61*, The Natural, and Friday Night Lights.

Before you go crazy and make fun of my list, just realize this is just my opinion, and you can comment with your own Top 10 if you feel it will provide some sort of justice.
Begin Slideshow

Pacers Begin Work on Defense With Jones

It is no secret the biggest weakness of the Pacers last season was their defense.

To fix such a big problem, the Pacers needed to add talented defensive players that could fit nicely in the rotation. Check.

The Pacers today signed free agent Dahntay Jones, who played with the Denver Nuggets last season. The Nuggets couldn't afford to keep him for next year, and he is excited to make an impact in Indiana.

Jones played with Indiana's Mike Dunleavy in college at Duke. He will now be reunited with him in Indiana, and will immediately contribute to improving the defense.

Dahntay has always been considered a defensive minded player since joining the league six years ago. He only averages slightly above five points per game, but most of those come from created turnovers on defense, followed by a wide open dunk.

Jones is the perfect fit with the Pacers, and also adds an athletic body to the roster. He reportedly signed a four year, $11 million contract.

Not only will Jones inspire the rest of the team to play better defense, but he also provides a spark when needed. He has always been a highlight dunker, going back to his days at Duke.

With the first big free agent signing for the Pacers in quite some time, look for Jones to make a lasting impact on the Pacers organization, and also with the fans.

Pacers Are Growing Up Fast

Young and full of talent, the Indiana Pacers look to place themselves back into the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

Perhaps they are still rebounding from the Ron Artest debacle at the Palace, but the rebuilding that has gone on here in recent years is finally starting to look promising.

First there was the ridding of wasted talent such as Artest, Jackson, and Tinsley. Now the filtration of young, mature players is all the rage in Indy.

Looking at the projected starting lineup for the Pacers next season, there is exceptional talent, and youth. With Rush, Granger, and Hibbert running the show, the future is looking better each day for Indiana.

Hansbrough (the much talked about 13th overall pick) is showing he can adjust to the NBA game through the summer league games so far this year. Not only is he getting his points on the floor, he is getting to the foul line, which is something Larry Bird likes.

These players are providing a youthful spark that has the Pacers community talking again. The buzz around these players is that they are all mature and won't cause any of the ridiculous trouble that brought this franchise to it's knees.

If there is one thing this team thrives on, it is energy. When there is a loose ball during a game, and the Pacers have Hansbrough, Foster, or Murphy on the floor, there is no doubt who will end up with the ball.

As this team grows, the leadership role becomes easier for Danny Granger, as he looks to lead this franchise back to the top, where a familiar name (Miller Time) still echos throughout the downtown circle.
