Dallas Cowboys Coaches Will Determine Success In 2009

With all that has gone on with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, whether or not Dallas has a successful season or a disastrous one ultimately falls on one group: the coaching staff.

Some coaches face much more pressure than others; namely wide receivers coach Ray Sherman and secondary coach Dave Campo. Others are some of the best in the league at what they do, like tight end coach John Garrett.

At the top is head coach Wade Phillips, who also takes over defensive coordinator responsibilities in 2009. Phillips is entering his third year at the helm in Dallas and his 32nd year of overall NFL coaching experience. Prior to his arrival in Dallas, Phillips spent time as defensive coordinator in San Diego for three seasons, installing the 3-4 scheme and transforming the Chargers into one of the best defensive teams in the league.

Phillips is a monster in the regular season, compiling a .592 career winning percentage, sixth best among active coaches. He has guided his teams to four playoff appearances in six years as a head coach, but has yet to record his first playoff win… something he will have to change in 2009 if he wants to secure his place with the Cowboys.

In only his fifth year at the NFL level, Jason Garrett is entering his third season as offensive coordinator with the Cowboys and second as assistant head coach. Prior to his arrival in Dallas, Garrett spent two seasons as quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins.

In his first season with the Cowboys in 2007, the offense fell just short of the team record for yards in a season with 5,851 total yards from scrimmage. Garrett kept right on rolling in 2008, as the Cowboys' offense amassed 5,512 total yards.

2009 will be the biggest challenge yet for Garrett, as Dallas loses its top wide receiver, Terrell Owens. In his place is a stable of unproven players, causing many in the organization to favor a shift toward a more run-oriented offense.

There are a handful of coaches on the Cowboys roster that deserve seldom-received recognition, and chief among them is John Garrett. As tight ends coach, Garrett is responsible for the continued growth and improvement of Pro Bowler Jason Witten and second-year standout Martellus Bennett.

Dat Nguyen returns for his second season as assistant linebackers coach under first-year linebackers coach Reggie Herring. Nguyen and Herring will be responsible for the team’s best unit on defense, featuring Bradie James, DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, and new acquisition Keith Brooking.

Skip Peete returned to the Cowboys in 2007 to coach the running backs and has made a dramatic improvement at the position in just two seasons. Dallas now features a three-headed running attack with Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice. Peete looks to be in the spotlight in 2009, as the Cowboys should rely more on the ground game, putting pressure on Peete to have them ready to shine.

Arguably the most recognized offensive line coach in the NFL, Hudson Houck returns for his 10th overall season with the Cowboys. Houck was originally with the team from 1993-2001, shaping an offensive line that grounded Dallas to three Super Bowl titles. Houck looks to work his magic again in Dallas with a unit that is considered by many to be the most talented offensive line in the league.

The final two coaches face the toughest challenges in 2009: wide receiver coach Ray Sherman and secondary coach Dave Campo. Sherman has to mold a No. 1 receiver out of Roy Williams and has to find a consistent second option out of either Patrick Crayton or Miles Austin.

Campo loses a starting cornerback in Anthony Henry and a starting safety in Roy Williams. He is left with a particularly bare cupboard of players outside of Pro Bowl cornerback Terrence Newman. Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick will be Campo’s biggest challenge, as they both will be looked upon to be stalwarts in the secondary all season long.

One on One With Tony Romo: A Mythical Interview

Trying to decide which member of the 2009 Dallas Cowboys to do a feature interview on is one of the hardest decisions you could have when covering a NFL team. After careful consideration, my choice would be quarterback Tony Romo. There are many questions I have of Romo that have yet to be asked, or yet to be answered completely. With that being said, here is a transcript of the questions I would ask Romo in a one-on-one interview:

1. Tony, you’re entering your seventh season in the NFL and your fourth as a starter for the Dallas Cowboys. When you were at Eastern Illinois University, did you imagine you’d be on this stage playing against the best players on the planet?

2. Looking back on your first three years with them team, did you feel you needed that time on the bench to learn and adapt to the next level, or was it frustrating not to have a chance to show your talents on Sundays from the very beginning?

3. There is more pressure, more expectations on you entering this season than perhaps any other, thanks in large part to the departure of Terrell Owens. Do you feel that pressure, or is it just like any other off-season as you prepare for opening day?

4. There has been so much speculation over the relationship that existed between you and T.O. Set the record straight once and for all—what was the relationship like between the two of you, both on and off the field? Were you sad to see him go?

5. Roy Williams takes over the No. 1 spot at receiver. What have you seen from Roy that makes you confident he can handle the job this season?

6. With all the regular-season success you’ve experienced since you’ve taken over under center, can you figure out why that hasn’t translated to a win in the post-season? How frustrating is that to you?

7. You’ve had a tough, hands on coach in Bill Parcells. Current coach Wade Phillips is more laid-back. Is there a style of coaching you prefer, and do you think Wade has the right demeanor to take Dallas to another Super Bowl title?

8. The ribbon-cutting ceremony on the new $1.5 billion Cowboys Stadium was this week—what do you think of the place, and does that add any pressure or put even more expectations on this season?

9. Switching gears, you are an avid golfer—and a good one at that. If you could either be in the final group at a PGA Major, or make it to the Super Bowl with the Cowboys—which would you choose, and would it be a tough decision?

10. Fill in the blank—2009 will be a disappointing season if we don’t _______________.

11. I know you didn’t ask for the “celebrity” status you have now, with paparazzi following you and Jessica’s every move. What do you make of all the attention for things off of the field? How is your relationship with Jessica? Did the media make too much of the effect her being in the stands had on your performance on the field?

12. Last question—do you feel there are certain changes you need to make, either on or off the field, in order to get the team and yourself to that next level?

Dallas Cowboys To Play "Smash-Mouth Football" in 2009

Those Dallas Cowboys fans that have paid close attention to the plays called by offensive coordinator Jason Garrett over the past few seasons will have a hard time recognizing the Silver and Blue in 2009.

Gone will be the flashy, big-play calls that Garrett made on a regular basis—in their place, a more physically demanding, “smash-mouth” style of football that will rely heavily on the running attack.

With a December record of 6-7 over the past three seasons, something needed to change. When the calendar gets late in the year, big-play offenses largely seem to fizzle out as the defenses get tougher.

Garrett could be out of his comfort zone calling a majority of running plays in 2009, but Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips realize it’s that kind of football that wins championships.

Under the pass-happy play calling last season, Dallas finished 18th in the league in points per game, and 13th in total yards per game—a far cry from where a team with the Cowboys talent on offense should end the season.

Luckily, the Cowboys three headed monster at running back should make the switch painless. Marion Barber, Tashard Choice, and Felix Jones combined for 1,623 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2008. With a healthy Jones in 2009, all three running backs should stay fresh and effective throughout the season.

Tony Romo should stay fresh all season long as well. The Cowboys will still throw the ball often, if only to keep defenses honest. But Romo should stay well under his 450 attempts in 13 games from 2008.

If Romo does not stay under his total attempts from last season, then the Cowboys will be in deep trouble. Other than tight end Jason Witten, there is no proven wide receiver to throw to.

Gone are Terrell Owens and his 69 catches and 10 touchdowns. The top three wide outs left on the roster—Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton, and Miles Austin—combined for 71 catches and 8 touchdowns.

2009 will be an interesting case-study for the Dallas Cowboys. Can a sexy, big play team make the transformation to a rugged, smash-mouth style found in New York and Pittsburgh?

If the transition is successful, the Cowboys will be hard to beat. The defense will stay solid under head coach Wade Phillips, and Matt McBriar will be back from injury to lead the league in punting.

But if Jason Garrett cannot get his head around conservative play calling, 2009 could be a train wreck for Dallas. Either way, it will be an exciting season to watch in Big D.

2009 NFC East: The Best of the Best

Heading into the 2008, the NFC East was widely considered to be the best division in all of football—and with all four teams finishing .500 or better, it did not disappoint. Here is the scary part: 2009 should be even better.

The New York Giants won the division in 2008, finishing 12-4 and boasting one of the best defenses in the NFL—a defense that will be better in 2009 with the addition of Osi Umenyiora back from injury, and the free agent signings of Michael Boley and Chris Canty.

On offense, Eli Manning will be without favorite target Plaxico Burress. Look for rookie wide receiver Hakeem Nicks and rookie tight end Travis Beckum to try and alleviate some of the pressure on Brandon Jacobs and the Giants running game.

Philadelphia is the early favorite to win the NFC East in 2009, thanks to an impressive offseason. Free agent acquisition Jason Peters is an improvement over Tra Thomas at offensive tackle, and rookies Jeremy Maclin and LeSean McCoy look to add speed and depth to an offense featuring Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, Kevin Curtis, and DeSean Jackson.

On defense the Eagles lose team icon Brian Dawkins to Denver, but bring in Ellis Hobbs from the Patriots. More importantly than Dawkins, Philadelphia is currently without defensive guru Jim Johnson, who took a leave of absence to battle a recurrence of melanoma.

Secondary coach Sean McDermott will take over until Johnson’s return. The Eagles have enough talent on defense to win a few games without their leader—but if Johnson cannot return, or is out for a prolonged period, things could get dicey for head coach Andy Reid and the Philly faithful.

The Dallas Cowboys want to forget about the two-game losing streak to end the 2008 season that kept them out of the postseason. The nucleus from that team returns in 2009, minus one Terrell Owens. The loss of Owens could prove huge for the Cowboys, who will rely on largely unproven Roy Williams to take over the top spot at wide receiver.

Tony Romo will look for Jason Witten early and often, and should rely more on an impressive stable of running backs, headlined by Marion Barber. On defense, DeMarcus Ware returns to wreck havoc on opposing quarterbacks. But it’s the loss of two key starters in the secondary, safety Roy Williams and cornerback Anthony Henry, that has Dallas coaches and fans nervous.

The equation is simple: improved secondary play and the Cowboys should return to the playoffs. If the secondary does not improve and the Cowboys miss the playoffs yet again, Dallas will more than likely be looking for a new head coach in 2010.

And then there's the Washington Redskins. Say what you want, but owner Daniel Snyder knows how to spend money. This offseason, his target was defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. He cost a pretty penny, but coupled with rookie defensive end Brian Orakpo, should vastly improve the Redskins defensive line.

After repeatedly looking to bring in another quarterback, Jason Campbell is back under center for Washington. Chris Cooley and Santana Moss will be his favorite targets once again, but it could be the health of running backs Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts that ultimately decide Washington’s fate.

Look for the Redskins to improve slightly on its 8-8 record from 2008, but ultimately miss the playoffs in an overwhelmingly tough NFC East.

Dallas Cowboys Look For Winning Ways In 2009

The Dallas Cowboys will have one less distraction to worry about when the team reports for Training Camp in San Antonio on July 29, with the departure of WR Terrell Owens to Buffalo earlier this off-season. What the Cowboys gain in team chemistry, it loses in on- field production, something that head coach Wade Phillips and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett will need to address if this year’s team plans on winning its first playoff game since 1996.

The majority of the pressure will be heaped upon wonder-kid Garrett, as he is saddled with the task of transforming Roy Williams into a legitimate number one option at receiver. Make no bones about it, TE Jason Witten is the go to guy for QB Tony Romo, but there has to be consistent production on the outside to open up lanes for Witten to operate. Other than Williams, the depth chart at receiver is void of standouts: Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin, Sam Hurd, and rookie Manuel Johnson out of Oklahoma make up the five deep.

The backfield will be the bright spot of the 2009 Cowboys offense, with quarterback Tony Romo poised to have his best season yet as a starter, in large part due to the three-headed rushing attack that will keep opposing defenses honest. Tashard Choice burst onto the scene last year when Felix Jones suffered a season ending injury, adding depth to the position behind starter Marion Barber.

With the entire offensive line returning, look for the Cowboys to unveil a new smash-mouth style of football this season. Gone will be the flashy, sexy Cowboys of the past few seasons. If you want to win, you have to be able to win ugly, just ask Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

The defense will fall under Wade Phillips’ control this season, after Jerry Jones fired two-year defensive coordinator Brian Stewart at the end of last season. Jay Ratliff has emerged as a legitimate NFL defensive tackle, who looks to improve heading into his fifth season. DeMarcus Ware, new acquisition Keith Brooking, and Bradie James will provide leadership from the linebacker position, which is the unquestioned strength of the Dallas defense. The weak spot will be the secondary, after losing starting cornerback Anthony Henry and S. Roy Williams. Look for Pat Watkins to get an opportunity to replace Williams, and Orlando Scandrick will be counted on to help replace Henry.

Expectations are once again high for the Dallas Cowboys heading into the season, exactly the way Jerry Jones wants it. Missing the playoffs is out of the question, especially in the debut season of the new Cowboys' Stadium. Anything less than a playoff victory, or multiple playoff victories, will be viewed as a failure by both Cowboys fans and front office, and would also result in a one-way ticket out of town for Phillips.

Why Coaches Should Coach and Media Should Vote

After yet another amazing Saturday of upsets in the college football world, the new batch of rankings came out on Sunday. The Associated Press poll, the first to be released Sunday morning, looks like this:

1. Texas (39) 1599
2. Alabama (26) 1582
3. Penn State 1492
4. Oklahoma 1306
5. Florida 1284
6. USC 1247
7. Texas Tech 1210
8. Oklahoma State 1184
9. BYU 1131
10. Georgia 1081

Next up was the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, the one of the two that is actually used in the uber-confusing BCS system. The Coaches Poll looks like this:

1. Texas (44) 1505
2. Alabama (14) 1452
3. Penn State (3) 1416
4. USC 1198
5. Texas Tech 1195
6. Oklahoma 1147
7. Florida 1145
8. BYU 1143
9. Georgia 1010
10. Oklahoma State 958

The top and bottom three of each poll's top ten is not the problem. As of today, no one can argue that Texas, Alabama, and Penn State are not three of the best teams in the country.

On the same hand, Oklahoma State, Georgia, and BYU deserve to be in the top ten...but not necessarily the top half of the top ten, yet.

The problem is numbers four through seven. Sadly, the more accurate AP poll is not factored into the BCS picture, so we are left with this from the Coaches:

4. USC (4-1)
So, a loss to an unranked Oregon State team that is 3-3 on the season justifies ranking the Trojans ahead of undefeated Texas Tech, an Oklahoma team whose only loss came to a Texas team ranked fifth at the time, and a Florida team that easily handled fourth-ranked LSU? Give me a break.

5. Texas Tech (6-0)
This is tricky. The undefeated start is nice, as are the obscene numbers the offense is posting every time out. Dig a little deeper, however, and the shine begins to wear off.

Eastern Washington, Nevada, SMU, UMASS, Kansas State, and Nebraska, the six teams Tech has beaten so far this season. Not one of them is anywhere near being ranked.

Saturday's struggle with Nebraska in Lubbock should have sent warning flags up for voters... instead, they land ahead of Oklahoma and Florida, and into the top five.

6. Oklahoma (5-1)
Does this make sense to you? I mean, really? The number one team in the country plays one of the best games in recent memory against another top five team, losing by 10 points after leading throughout the first three quarters.

The game showed just how evenly matched the Longhorns and Sooners are this year. And yet, after watching that game, the Coaches believe Texas is FIVE spots better than Oklahoma?

7. Florida (5-1)
The Gators bounce back from an upset loss at home to a good Ole Miss team to dismantle an Arkansas team that beat No. 20 Auburn Saturday, then turn around and rock No. 4 LSU by 30 points this past weekend... and find themselves looking up at six other teams above them?

The most outrageous part is that the coaches themselves hardly vote. But honestly, why should they? It's not as if they have all this free time to sit down and watch games every Saturday.

While the media is not perfect, it is a part of their job to watch as many games as possible each week. They report on the games. Usually, they have no agenda in voting one team above another.

And yet, the BCS uses the Coaches poll instead of the AP poll in helping determine who should play for the National Championship.

Thank goodness it's only October, leaving plenty of time for more upsets and the chance for the coaches poll to finally get it right.

**Here is the Harris Poll's top ten, which along with the Coaches Poll makes up two-thirds of the BCS rankings.**
1. Texas
2. Alabama
3. Penn State
4. Oklahoma
5. USC
6. Florida
7. Texas Tech
8. BYU
9. Georgia
10. Oklahoma State

Game of the Year? Look No Further Than Oklahoma-Texas

In a season with numerous marquee games already played, and many still to come, one stands out above the rest as the "Game of the Year."

Alabama's demolishing of third-ranked Georgia on Saturday carries some serious merit, as it announced Bama's re-emergence not only to the SEC, but also to the nation.

LSU at Florida and Penn State at Wisconsin both lost luster after the Gators and Badgers spit the bit to unranked opponents. Georgia's Week 11 game at LSU suffered the same fate as well.

What game is left, then, as this season's "Game of the Year"? One that features two bitter rivals, two top five teams, and two teams with legit national championship dreams: The Red River Shootout—Oklahoma vs. Texas.

The stats back it up: Oklahoma's offense is tied for fourth in the country with Penn State at 49.8 points per game, while Texas' offense isn't far behind, averaging 49.5.

OU quarterback Sam Bradford averages 357 yards passing a game (357!!!), good for fifth in the nation. Colt McCoy and the Longhorns throw for 276.8 yards a game, tying for 18th.

Bradford and McCoy are two of the country's best quarterbacks when it comes to QB rating as well: McCoy is second in Division I at 209.71, and Bradford is third at 209.05.

The gaudy stats don't stop on the offensive side of the ball either, with OU's defense ranking 15th in total defense (Texas is 26th).

While the stats are great, this game gets the nod as "Game of the Year" for reasons that go far beyond the numbers. This game, regardless of outcome, will have the biggest effect on the National Title picture of any this season.

If Oklahoma gets past Texas, its toughest remaining games are at home against Kansas and Texas Tech. Granted, the Sooners slipped up last year on the road against unranked Colorado, but OU's road opponents this year (Kansas State and Texas A&M) aren't in the same league as the pesky Buffs at home.

That would set up two huge games in a row, beginning with Bedlam at Oklahoma State and ending with the Big 12 Championship game, presumably against Missouri (although the Tigers are in trouble if they don't find a defense in a hurry).

While Oklahoma State usually plays the Sooners tough, OU looks to have an advantage at virtually every position, and we all remember what happened in last year's Big 12 Championship game against an overrated and overmatched Missouri team.

If Oklahoma wins the Red River Shootout, they will have the inside track to Miami and the BCS Championship game. But what about Texas?

If the Longhorns emerge victorious, their road is a bit tougher than Oklahoma's. On Oct. 18, one week after OU/TX, Missouri comes to Austin. After that, Texas hosts Oklahoma State before traveling to Texas Tech.

Let's say the Longhorns survive that gauntlet unscathed—two rivalry games (Baylor and Texas A&M) and one ranked opponent on the road (Kansas) close out the regular season schedule.

In all honesty, the odds of Texas ending the season undefeated are slim-to-none, which will make things very interesting if they beat Oklahoma on Oct. 11. USC, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Florida—all with one loss—would suddenly gain new life in the National Title hunt.

The outcome of Oklahoma vs. Texas could shape the seasons of a handful of title contenders. And did I mention how much these two teams, and fans, dislike each other?

It all adds up to one big Saturday in October. One gigantic game. A game that will end up as the "Game of the Year."

Open Mic: Cal Ripken, Jr. Has Most Impressive Streak in Sports History

With all the negatives throughout the world of sports at the moment, it's important to focus on the good things, the things that brought us to sports in the first place.

It was September 6, 1995, and Baltimore's Camden Yards was electric. That night, Cal Ripken Jr. would break a record held for 43 years—Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played streak which was 2,130 games.

Ripken broke Gehrig's record that night and went on to play in 502 more games in a row, finally ending his consecutive games played streak at 2,632.

Just how impressive is Ripken's streak?

Chew on this: 2,632 games is over 16 years of not missing one single game. 2,632 games is 8,243 consecutive innings.

The closest player to Ripken since he set his mark was another Baltimore Oriole, Miguel Tejada, who played in 1,152 games before missing action due to an injury in 2007.

Mark my words; Ripken's record will never be broken. The closest current player to Ripken's 2,632 was Minnesota Twins outfielder Delmon Young's 217 game streak, until Young was benched by Ron Gardenhire back in May.

Ripken did things the right way, the clean way and he did something that will never be equaled. A good memory to reflect on in this time of cheats and snitches.

Now, excuse me while I go back to reading Tim Donaghy stories...

Racing's New Hope—Nicanor

He's been called the "Ghost of Barbaro". Already, people are clamoring to see him run his first race. His name is Nicanor—and he might be the savior horse racing has been looking for.

Nicanor is by the sire Dynaformer, from the dam La Ville Rouge. Sound familiar? It should—Nicanor is the full brother of national darling Barbaro, winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby.

Nicanor has yet to run a single race. Sercretariat had a sister and Seattle Slew had a brother, neither of which turned out to be half as good as their famous siblings.

Who knows how good Nicanor will actually be. He can look and act exactly like his brother, which he does. Racing like his brother...now that's something entirely different.

But on the morning of June 7, the same day Big Brown failed to become horse racing's 12th Triple Crown winner, Nicanor posted his first official workout: Three furlongs in 0:39 seconds flat.

If the racing gods were against brash trainer Rick Dutrow and the IEAH owners of Big Brown, they have to be smiling at the sight of Nicanor.

His owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, earned the respect and admiration of every racing fan for their unyielding attempt to save Barbaro's life.

His trainer, Michael Matz, is an Olympic equestrian champion, and champion of a different sort after saving the lives of three children during a plane crash years ago.

Maybe it's too early to call Nicanor the "savior" of the sport. But here's to hoping Nicanor puts on a performance in the 2009 Kentucky Derby that is eerily similar to his brother's win in 2006.

If not...there's always 2010, when Barbaro's second full-brother, Lentenor, will be three years old.

*** Update: Nicanor is entered Saturday, January 31 in the eighth race at Gulfstream Park. He is the morning line favorite at 4-1 ***

Kobe Bryant or Chris Paul: The Debate for MVP

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, in his 12th NBA season, finally won his first Most Valuable Player award earlier Tuesday afternoon. But the question still remains: did he deserve it?

There is no doubting Bryant's immense talent - pound for pound, he's the best basketball player in the world. But does that make you an MVP?

This year, Bryant's Lakers were the best team in the Western Conference, earning the number one seed. He had plenty of help along the way, especially after the mid-season theft -- I mean trade -- of Pau Gasol from Memphis.

When was the last time a Kobe-led team dominated either a regular season or post season prior to 2008?

How about when Shaq-daddy was still roaming the Staples Center court?

Do you see the trend?

If Bryant is surrounded by superstar talent, the Lakers succeed at a high rate. If he's not -- they barely make the playoffs, if at all.

Now, this in and of itself does not exclude Bryant from being a MVP candidate. But it has to be at considered, especially when you have a guy like LeBron James single-handedly willing his team to victories night after night.

Or a guy like Chris Paul, my choice for NBA MVP.

Here is a guy who, as we speak, is running circles around Tony Parker and the defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Semis.

Paul has made stars out of players that were glorified role players before his arrival (i.e. David West and Tyson Chandler). He led his team in points per game during the regular season, while leading the NBA in assists (11.6 apg) and steals (2.71 spg).

Maybe the MVP is different to me than it is to those that vote on who should receive it.

Take Chris Paul off of the Hornets roster. Do you think they'd be the second seed, up 2-0 on San Antonio? Me neither.

But could you see the Lakers, with a healthy Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, competing for the Western Conference crown? I could see that far more than the Hornets being where they are without Paul.

That's how I define an MVP—the player most valuable to his team.

Not to discount Kobe or anything he's accomplished, but the top two players that deserve this award in my mind are Chris Paul and LeBron James.

Triumph Mixed with Tragedy: The 2008 Kentucky Derby

It was a day of celebration for Big Brown and his connections. His stirring four-and-three-fourths length win in Saturday's Kentucky Derby was one of the most visually impressive Derby wins of recent memory, leaving fans to wonder if this is finally the horse to break the Triple Crown drought.

However, a feeling of sadness outweighed the excitement when the filly Eight Belles collapsed after finishing the race in second place.

She fractured both front ankles, an injury so devastating the track veterinarians had no choice but to euthanize her on the spot.

What led to this surprising breakdown? It's hard to say. Even Eight Belles' trainer, Larry Jones, says he has no idea what caused the injury.

"I see no reason for this," said Jones. "It happened a quarter of a mile after the race. If she (Eight Belles) was under a little stress finishing the race, was losing ground and looked like she was in distress, I would have second-guessed myself severely and kicked myself in the pants."

Jones went on to say that, "she [Eight Belles] went into the race the best she's ever gone into any race in her life, she was so calm in the paddock, so confident.

"I know we're probably going to get criticized and second-guessed by somebody who'll come up with the idea she shouldn't have been in there, but it wasn't in the race this happened. She could have done this racing against Shetland ponies.

"All she had to do was pull up and come back and we'd be happy. Unfortunately that just didn't happen."

Just two weeks shy of Barbaro's now famous breakdown during the Preakness Stakes, the last thing horse racing needed was more casualties during its most watched races.

But that's exactly what happened.

Eight Belles' tragedy brings to the forefront the numerous problems facing racing today. The different surfaces (Polytrack, Cushion Track, Pro-Ride, etc.), doping problems, lack of public interest—among others—are sure to be dissected in the coming days.

Of these numerous problems facing the Sport of Kings today, the biggest appears to be the apparent change in breeding tactics.

Horses used to be bred for stamina and strength, not so much for speed and agility, as is the case today. Consequently, they used to be far sturdier than today's thoroughbreds.

But how do you fix the problem? Governing the breeding of horses is a tricky task to take on.

The answer could be to force all tracks to adopt a synthetic surface, which has shown close to a 75 percent reduction in "catastrophic injuries." Ideally they should all adopt the same surface, though, and this wouldn't be the easiest thing in the world to agree upon.

While they're at it, the amount of racing that takes place on a daily basis needs to be limited. People come out to the races when it is a "special" event, like the Saratoga and Keeneland meets.

Making this the norm—instead of the exception—could help to bring excitement and public curiosity back to the sport on days other than the first Saturday in May.

As someone who loves the beauty, power, and majesty of the sport, something needs to be done—and quickly.

I can't handle watching another horse go down in a big race...and we all know the sport itself can't handle it, either.

Sean Sutton Fired At OSU— What was Mike Holder Thinking?

When I arrived at the office this morning, I was shocked to read this story from ESPN.com saying that Sean Sutton has been asked to leave Oklahoma State.

Mike Gundy, the Oklahoma State football coach, has had two consecutive mediocre seasons in Stillwater... and has the full support of T. Boone Pickens, A.D. Mike Holder, and the rest of the Oklahoma State community.

Sean Sutton took over under an adverse situation (his father, Eddie, left due to health reasons), took the Cowboys to two straight NIT Tournaments... and is told the program is "going in another direction".

Two names being thrown around in Stillwater as possible replacements for Sutton at OSU? Billy Gillespie and Bill Self. Gillespie is coaching at Kentucky, Self at Kansas. Holder seriously believes that Self will leave Lawrence, Kansas to come home to the Cowboys (Self graduated from OSU), even though he will be heading down to San Antonio for the Final Four in a matter of hours.

It's that mindset that has me scratching my head. Why would any athletic director think that a coach would leave one of the top five coaching jobs in the country to take the same position at a lower-tier program?

It doesn't matter that the coach could go "home" to his Alma Matter, when they are already at one of the best jobs in the country. Sure, Roy Williams left Kansas to go home... to North Carolina. If you think Oklahoma State is on the same level as North Carolina, I have some ocean-front property to sell you here in Waco.

Holder lost all respect as an A.D. last year, during that amazing Oklahoma State vs. Texas game in Stillwater. I'm sure you remember that classic triple overtime game, which featured a dominant Kevin Durant and one of the most amazing shots I've ever seen (Byron Eaton's fling while falling out of bounds).

Well, Holder was there, too. At least for part of it. See, Holder likes to keep a certain schedule. He likes to go to bed at the same time each night, so he can get up and work-out in the morning.

So Holder left Gallagher Iba Arena at the end of the first over-time, because it was getting close to his bedtime.

That story just begins to scratch the ineptitude of Holder as an athletic director. Unless he has a big-time coach lined up to replace Sutton, he will find himself in some seriously hot water.

Many fans in Stillwater are already outraged at the firing, if only because he shouldn't treat the First Family of Stillwater like that. Eddie's signature is on the court, for crying out loud.

Only time will tell if Holder made this move with another coach already lined up to take over. If not, he might be run out of town before he has a chance to fix his blunder.

Memphis-Michigan State: LIVE Halftime Reaction

Memphis came out running from the opening tip and didn't stop until halftime, blitzing Michigan State for a 50-20 halftime lead.

The Tigers were lead by freshman guard Derrick Rose, who had 12 points and four assists.

The story of the half might be Memphis' defense, contesting every shot and holding State to 39 percent shooting.

If Sparty has any chance to get back in the game early in the second half, they'll have to contain Memphis in transition. But when the Tigers shoot 63 percent and are up 30 at the break...the moutain to climb is bigger than Everest.

Check back after the game for LIVE post-game reaction from Houston.

Stanford-Texas: LIVE Game Recap

The second half featured more of the same from the Longhorns, after withstanding a nice run by Stanford to cut the lead to 52-51 with 12:39 left in the game.

Texas answered by going on a 30 to 11 run to end the game and give Texas the 82 to 62 victory, advancing the Longhorns to the Elite 8.

They await the winner of Houston's second game between Memphis and Michigan State.

DJ Augustin was huge tonight, scoring 21 points along with Daimon James, who scored 18, including the "dagger" dunk to put UT up 15 with 5 minutes to play.

Check back during halftime of the Memphis vs. Michigan State game for first half reaction LIVE from Houston.

Stanford-Texas: LIVE First Half Reaction

In what can only be described as a home crowd, the Texas Longhorns outplayed the Stanford Cardinal in the first half of the South Regional Semi-Final.

Led by D.J. Augustin's 12 points, the Longhorns head into the locker room with a 43-34 lead.

Brook Lopez is leading Stanford, scoring 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds. On the defensive end, he seems to be having trouble keeping up with the Longhorns' Connor Atchley, especially when Atchley sets up outside.

An interesting thing to watch in the second half is the officiating down on the low block. The Lopez twins seem to be getting every call in the paint, resulting in three fouls on Texas post players.

Check back for post-game reaction.

Memphis Tigers: Passing the "Eye Test"

I have a confession to make: I, like many of you, do not have Memphis winning the National Championship in my bracket.

Even though they finished the year with ONE loss, I found reasons to discount the Tigers. I mean, the poor free-throw shooting has to catch up to them at some point... doesn't it?

That all changed today, when I was walking out of the Texas locker room inside Reliant Stadium in Houston.

Beside me was the Memphis Tiger team, heading towards their locker room. And they were they most physically impressive team I've ever seen in person.

Joey Dorsey is a man-child, and Chris Douglas-Roberts was almost as big as Dorsey-- and he's a guard.

This year's Michigan State team is not as physical as years past, which does not bode well for Friday's game. To beat Memphis, you have to be tough, physical, smart, shoot lights out, and be fundamentally sound on defense.

Still, I wouldn't have been surprised to see Sparty pull an upset, until I heard Dorsey say this:

"We feel no pressure on us right now. Everyone is picking us to lose, so the pressure isn't on us anymore. We are just going to go out there and have fun playing. Hopefully, we'll get a win."

Tom Izzo is a great coach, and will have a solid game-plan going into the game. But when it's all said and done, Memphis will move on to the Elite Eight, because they are going to play free-style, fast-paced Tiger basketball.

And whether it's Stanford or Texas standing in the Tigers way, it will be tough to keep Calipari's kids out of San Antonio.

Oklahoma Sooners: A Sleeper Pick for the Sweet 16

For the life of me, I can't figure out this Oklahoma Sooners basketball team. Heading into Wednesday night's bedlam finale in Stillwater, the deck appeared to be stacked against the Sooners.

They were without offensive leader Blake Griffin, who had knee surgery earlier in the week, and were playing an Oklahoma State team that had won five games in a row.

But when it was all said and done, it was Oklahoma securing a win in a game with major postseason implications.

If you're looking to credit a Sooner player for carrying the load in Griffin's absence, look no further than sophomore guard Tony Crocker. Crocker scored a career-high 25 points and, in the process, outplayed OSU's star point guard Byron Eaton, who scored 13.

The most important thing to take away from Oklahoma's road win? A notice to the rest of the country: You won't want to play us in the NCAA Tournament.

For the second straight game, OU's defense held its opponent under 40 percent shooting for the game (Texas A&M: 27 percent, OSU: 37 percent). It's that aggressive, ball-swarming, shot-contesting defense that drives opponents crazy and keeps the Sooners in ball games.

If Blake Griffin does not come back from his knee surgery as quickly or effectively as the coaching staff hopes, the Sooners will be in a bit of trouble. They proved tonight, though, that the defense doesn't stop in Griffin's absence.

Could OU beat one of this year's elite teams? Probably not. I'm not crazy.

But if the brackets line up favorably, don't be surprised to see the Sooners in the Sweet 16.

Oklahoma Sooners Football: Who To Watch For in 2008

With National Signing day rapidly approaching (Feb.6)— and early defections and senior graduates already gone— there are plenty of spots that need to be filled on every team's roster. The same is true for the Oklahoma Sooners, who look to replace key losses at wide receiver, running back, defensive end, linebacker, and safety.

On the offensive side of the ball, OU has the potential to be even more potent than last season's explosive offense. Senior running back Allen Patrick has moved on, but leaves a stable of highly-capable running backs to take his spot.

DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown are at the top of the list to replace Patrick, but don't sleep on Mossis Madu and recruit Jermie Calhoun (who has verbally committed to Oklahoma).

Juaquin Iglesias returns at wide receiver, as does Quentin Chaney and Manuel Johnson. Malcom Kelly has left early for the NFL Draft, but incoming freshmen Josh Jarboe and Jameel Owens look to fill in the gap.

On defense, the secondary was hit the hardest, losing Reggie Smith, Marcus Walker, and D.J. Wolfe. Plenty of young talent is ready to emerge, such as Brett Bowers and Lendy Holmes. Holmes received plenty of playing time the past few seasons, and the same goes for Nic Harris.

The defensive line loses senior defense end Alonzo Dotson, along with defensive tackle Steven Coleman. Recruit R.J. Washington will come to Norman ready to contribute alongside Auston English, Gerald McCoy, and DeMarcus Granger (assuming Granger gets his personal life in order).

Inside linebacker recruit Daniel Franklin looks to play a key role for years to come, but has a tough immediate task in replacing departed star Curtis Lofton, who led the Big 12 in tackles last year. Lamont Robinson and Ryan Reynolds will anchor a linebacking core that will be shallow, but talented.

Throw in some depth at quarterback and offensive line, and Bob Stoops has positioned his Oklahoma Sooners to be National Championship contenders for the foreseeable future.

2008 College Football Preseason Top 10

I know, I know...the 2007 season ended less than a week ago, and here I am putting together a Top 10 of teams to watch.

Obviously, things could change based on National Signing Day and early entries to the NFL Draft. In short: I'm a sick, sick person.

1. Georgia Bulldogs

Arguably the hottest team at the end of 2007, Georgia returns all but five starters from this year's Sugar Bowl squad. Sophomore running back Knowshon Moreno, redshirt freshman Caleb King, and quarterback Matthew Stafford will anchor one of the best backfields in America.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes

After two straight years of BCS Championship nightmares, coach Jim Tressel will be in a great position to prove the third time's a charm. Replacing right tackle Kirk Barton is the biggest issue for the Buckeyes, who return both leading receivers, quarterback, and leading rusher on offense. On defense, the addition of injured defensive end Lawrence Wilson will make the stout OSU defense even better... assuming LB James Laurinaitis comes back for his senior season.

3. Oklahoma Sooners

Quarterback Sam Bradford will be back under center, along with the majority of the offensive line and skill positions. Running back DeMarco Murray will replace senior Allen Patrick, and there's a good possibility WR Malcom Kelly will make the jump to the NFL. On defense OU will have to replace two starters in the secondary... but look for Bob Stoops to have the Sooners in the thick of the championship hunt yet again.

4. Florida Gators

The Gators defense will be much improved in 2008, as will the running game with USC transfer Emmanuel Moody. The combo of Moody, Tim Tebow, and Percy Harvin will be one of the most dynamic in the country.

5. Clemson

With the return of running back tandem C.J. Spiller and James Davis, quarterback Cullen Harper and wide receiver Aaron Kelly, Clemson will undoubtedly have an explosive offense. Protecting Harper will be the biggest obstacle, as Tommy Bowden will have to replace four starters on the offensive line. With 9 starters back on D, the Tigers should finally win the ACC.

6. USC

Based on talent alone, USC is one of the best teams in the country. But coach Pete Carroll will have to replace loads of talent on both offense and defense, including quarterback John David Booty. I predict a season much like 2007 for the Trojans; a bit of a slow start, followed by maturation, resulting in one of the hottest teams at the end of the year. The only problem with that is the September 13 game against Ohio State, which could end up as an early loss.

Quick sidenote: I'm not 100% convinced Carroll will be back at USC next year. Don't be surprised if he takes the Atlanta Falcons job.

7. Texas Tech Red Raiders

The Red Raiders are my dark horse team of 2008. Mike Leach has led Tech to a bowl game each of his eight seasons in Lubbock, and will be in a BCS Bowl next year. Quarterback Graham Harrell and WR Michael Crabtree both return, along with the entire offensive line. With the majority of the defense returning, the biggest concern will be replacing departed kicker Alex Trilica.

8. Missouri

The Tigers will play the 2008 version of the Kansas Jayhawks schedule from last year, meaning they will basically play...no one. Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech are all off the schedule, and the non-conference schedule consists of Southeast Missouri, Nevada, and Buffalo. So even with a bevy of lost players, Missouri should be at the top of the Big 12 North come December.

9. West Virginia

I'm putting faith in new coach Bill Stewart, based off his Fiesta Bowl performance. Sure, it's much easier to get a team up for one game than an entire season, but with the offensive talent returning to Morgantown, you have to like his chances. Look for Noel Devine to be this year's Percy Harvin, a threat both in the running game and passing game.

10. Auburn

The Tigers return eight starters on both offense and defense, and will feature a spread look thanks to newly hired offensive coordinator Tony Franklin. Sophomore QB Kodi Burns will be a breakout star in 2008. Tough test early as Auburn travels to WVU, but they get a "break" with LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Georgia all being at home.

Fiesta Bowl: No Party for Oklahoma

West Virginia saved its best effort of the season for the Fiesta Bowl—and Oklahoma responded with its worst performance of the year.

The result was a complete mismatch from the opening kickoff.

West Virginia rushed for 349 yards, the most rushing yards ever allowed by Oklahoma in a bowl game. For the record, that's 349 yards without starting tailback Steve Slaton, who left in the first quarter with a leg injury.

Speedy freshman Noel Devine filled in nicely, rushing 12 times for 105 yards, including a 65-yard scamper that all but wrapped up the win for the Mountaineers.

If Oklahoma fans want to point fingers after the 48-28 embarrassment, look no further than that "vaunted" Sooner defense. Mountaineer quarterback Pat White accounted for 326 total yards (176 passing, 150 rushing) en route to the Fiesta Bowl's MVP award.

Going into the game, the Sooners knew they had to stop White to have any shot of winning the game. But he was just too fast for the OU defense to contain.

Speaking of speed, WVU had more of it than Oklahoma on both sides of the ball. Sooner left tackle Phil Loadholt looked like he was moving in quicksand compared to the Mountaineer pass rush.

In the end, interim coach Bill Stewart made his case to become West Virginia's permanent coach—and he made it loud and clear. The brass in Morgantown would be foolish to look anywhere else for their next leading man.

As for Oklahoma—the Sooners had been mentioned in the same breath as USC and Georgia as one of the hottest teams in the country. After USC and Georgia demolished Illinois and Hawaii, respectively, OU couldn't hold up its end of the deal.

All is not lost for Sooner fans, however. Coach Bob Stoops has a loaded team returning to Norman next season, led by quarterback Sam Bradford and running back DeMarco Murray.

They'll be favored to win the Big 12 for the third straight season. And, ultimately, they'll be back in the National Championship hunt with Georgia, USC, West Virginia, Ohio State, Florida, and LSU—to name a few.

But in order for Oklahoma to win its eighth national title, they'll have to figure out this current bowl-game funk.

Taking Everything for Granted: Sooners Stumble on the Way to Tempe

This is not a preview of the Oklahoma-West Virginia Fiesta Bowl. That will be coming tomorrow.

This is a rant. A steaming-mad, red-hot rant—not about any action on the football field, but the actions and mindsets of players off of the field.

Actually, I shouldn't say "players", because that's a general term and I'm speaking only about two players: Lendy Holmes and DeMarcus Granger.

Lendy Holmes will be absent from the Fiesta Bowl Thursday night. Not due to injury—I would have no problem with that—but because he did not pass his classes last semester.

Now look, I went to school with these guys, and I understand the strain put on atheletes these days. They practice for hours almost every day, they watch film, they run, they lift, and then they attend class.

At least, they are supposed to attend class.

Knowing what these guys go through, I still have no sympathy for them. I was fortunate enough to have my family's help paying for college, but I've had plenty of friends who paid their own way through school.

That meant working two, sometimes three jobs. One of my friends was a bartender at night, leaving the bar around 3:30am every night, then having to be in class at 8:30 the next morning. And guess what? He didn't fail.

I won't even get into all the academic help college athletes get these days, with 24-hour access to tutors at no charge. Let's just say that if Lendy had wanted to pass his classes, if he would have been just a little bit concerned about his grades, the Oklahoma athletic department would have found a way to help him pass.

Trust me, Bob Stoops will gladly dismiss a player from practice a few times a week, if that time off equates to his player being eligible for OU's biggest game of the season.

But Lendy obviously didn't care as much about his grades as he did playing football and hanging out with friends.

And while I'm on the topic, I came across this breaking news headline in my inbox this morning: Oklahoma defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger has been sent home from Arizona after being arrested Saturday night for shoplifting.

That's right, shoplifting.

I don't know if you are aware of this, but football players on BCS Bowl teams get enough high-end, free gifts to make any person jealous. But Granger really wanted that jacket from Burlington Coat Factory—enough to try to steal it.

Despite what you might think, DeMarcus, you're not above the law just because you play for the Oklahoma Sooners. And despite what you might think, Lendy, you're not above University rules, just because you play football.
