Top 150 Returning College Football Players for the 2009 Season

As the first Saturday of the 2009 college football season is nearly upon us, the excitement level couldn't be any higher.

Besides the preseason polls and All-American teams, the hype building up to the kickoff of college football is unreal.

Here are my top 150 returning college football players for the 2009 season rankings. This is not an NFL Draft Big Board, and is based off potential and success at the collegiate level as opposed to a player's status as a pro prospect.

This list will not contain offensive linemen, as there are no stats or anything to go by in terms of ranking them accurately.

This list will only contain returning players—no incoming freshmen, transfers, and I will also not be including players who are out with season-ending injuries. It pains me to see players like Mark Herzlich, Nate Irving, Darren Evans, James Starks, and any other players in college football go down prematurely due to injury.

I haven't tampered with the rankings or comments since before yesterday's games, so none of yesterday's games affected these rankings. Seeing how LeGarrette Blount is now suspended for the year, I find the comment I had wrote for him to be hilarious.

Love it or hate it, leave a comment and let me know what you think. For those interested, player No. 151 would have been wide receiver Phillip Livas from Louisiana Tech.

1. QB Tim Tebow, Sr. – Florida: Tebow returns this year as undoubtedly the most accomplished player still playing college football.

2. S Eric Berry, Jr. – Tennessee: Berry is the most exciting player in college football. Call it a fact.

3. QB Colt McCoy, Sr. – Texas: No other player in college football this year will be watched as much as McCoy.

4. QB Sam Bradford, Jr. – Oklahoma: You know college football is stacked with talent when the Heisman winner returns and isn’t the best player.

5. WR Dez Bryant, Jr. – Oklahoma State: Easily the best wide receiver in college football, to put it simply.

6. S Taylor Mays, Sr. – USC: The reason most receivers would rather not cut across the field against USC.

7. LB Brandon Spikes, Sr. – Florida: Anchors the defending National Champions' defense that just so happens to return all eleven starters.

8. DT Ndamukong Suh, Sr. – Nebraska: It’s harder to slip past Suh than it is to pronounce his name.

9. RB Jahvid Best, Jr. – California: Electrifying all-purpose back has emerged as the consensus top running back in college football.

10. DE Jerry Hughes, Sr. – TCU: Returns as college football’s defending sack champ and to help TCU challenge Utah for the Mountain West title.

11. DT Gerald MCoy, Jr. – Oklahoma: An intimidating defender who has jumped into the top five in some 2010 NFL mock drafts.

12. LB Sean Weatherspoon, Sr. – Missouri: Apparently he is going to, “squeeze the juice out of Illinois” week one, and I doubt he’ll stop there.

13. DE Greg Hardy, Sr. – Ole Miss: Only played in seven games last season due to injury, yet still managed to put up one more sack than in as many games.

14. TE Jermaine Gresham, Sr. – Oklahoma: An elite playmaker, is a nightmare for any defensive coordinator’s game plan.

15. DE George Selvie, Sr. – South Florida: Slowed by injury this past season but is returning to his old, backfield-disrupting self.

16. DT Terrence Cody, Sr. – Alabama: He isn’t called Mount Cody because of his 6-5 height and 354 pound frame. Oh wait, that is why.

17. RB Jonathan Dwyer, Jr. – Georgia Tech: A combination of power and speed, perfect for Paul Johnson’s option-oriented offense.

18. QB Case Keenum, Jr. – Houston: Amazing numbers, yet it seems the casual football fan hasn’t taken note.

19. RB Kendall Hunter, Jr. – Oklahoma State: Gets lost among the Cowboys’ star-studded offense, but he hasn’t gone anywhere.

20. QB Jevan Snead, Jr. – Ole Miss: Colt McCoy’s former backup looks to sneak the Rebels into the top ten and possibly even greater places.

21. WR Dezmon Briscoe, Jr. – Kansas: It seems the trend of the top wide receivers coming from the Big 12 is still in.

22. RB Jacquizz Rodgers, So. – Oregon State: Blew away the competition his freshman year and looks to help pull off another certain upset this season.

23. LB Rolando McClain, Jr. – Alabama: One of the main reasons Alabama’s defense will rival that of Florida’s.

24. QB Dan LeFevour, Sr. – Central Michigan: Struggled with injuries this past season, but when healthy is one of the most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in college football.

25. CB Trevard Lindley, Sr. – Kentucky: With a big year this season, Lindley could break out as the top cornerback prospect for next year’s NFL draft.

26. LB Navorro Bowman, Jr. – Penn State: Linebacker U is at it again. Bowman is the latest elite backer to pass through Joe Paterno’s defense.

27. DE Carlos Dunlap, Jr. – Florida: Led the defending National Champs in sacks last season. Go figure.

28. QB Todd Reesing, Sr. – Kansas: Has been in Chase Daniel’s shadow the past two seasons, but will return this season as the Big 12 North’s top quarterback.

29. LB Greg Jones, Jr. – Michigan State: Could finish this season as the best defensive player in the Big Ten.

30. DT Brian Price, Jr. – UCLA: A demolishing run-stuffer who has surprising stats for a defensive lineman.

31. QB Terrelle Pryor, So. – Ohio State: An outstanding 40-yard time for a quarterback, the expectations are high in his first full season as a starter.

32. DE/LB Sergio Kindle, Sr. – Texas: Hybrid end who will take over Brian Orakpo’s spot as the leader of the Texas defense.

33. WR Julio Jones, So. – Alabama: Plays big in big games, and will look to improve on his touchdown total from last season.

34. DE Jason Worilds, Jr. – Virginia Tech: Broke out in his first season as a starter, causes tremendous problems in the opposing backfield.

35. CB Syd’Quan Thompson, Sr. – California: Much more physical than his small frame may indicate.

36. WR Arrelious Benn, Jr. – Illinois: An athlete with blazing speed, Benn can run and return the ball as well as catch it.

37. QB Zac Robinson, Sr. – Oklahoma State: Runs the nation’s most-hyped offense. You might find it surprising that he isn’t even a top two quarterback in his own division.

38. S Morgan Burnett, Jr. – Georgia Tech: Pretty much the consensus No. 3 safety in the nation behind the two aforementioned All-Americans.

39. WR Mardy Gilyard, Sr. – Cincinnati: A dangerous playmaker on offense as well as a very dangerous kick returner.

40. CB Myron Lewis, Sr. – Vanderbilt: Opposing quarterbacks who tried to pick on Lewis last season paid a steep price.

41. CB Joe Haden, Jr. – Florida: An athlete that will be taking some snaps under center in the wildcat formation this year.

42. RB C. J. Spiller, Sr. – Clemson: James Davis is gone; Spiller is the go-to guy now.

43. CB Kyle Wilson, Sr. – Boise State: Hands down the best defensive player in the WAC.

44. LB Sean Lee, Sr. – Penn State: Missed the entire season last year due to injury, but will look to duplicate his numbers from 2007.

45. RB LeGarrette Blount, Sr. – Oregon: Just itching to break onto the national scene this year.

46. WR A. J. Green, So. – Georgia: Starting to close the talent gap the media portrays between himself and fellow sophomore Julio Jones.

47. QB Juice Williams, Sr. – Illinois: Once known as the poor man’s Pat White, Williams has one last year to prove he’s his own man.

48. LB Joe Pawelek, Sr. – Baylor: As Baylor begins to rise to national prominence, Pawelek will draw more attention.

49. DT Arthur Jones, Sr. – Syracuse: Often overlooked as he plays on possibly the worst team in the weakest BCS conference.

50. LB Travis Lewis, So. – Oklahoma: A tackling machine who shined against Texas last season.

51. LB Rennie Curran, Jr. – Georgia: The SEC’s leading returning tackler.

52. LB Eric Norwood, Sr. – South Carolina: Sack machine who calls outside linebacker home.

53. RB Damion Fletcher, Sr. – Southern Miss: Most career rushing yards in college football among active players.

54. CB Alterraun Verner, Sr. – UCLA: Finished last season No. 1 in the nation in passes defended.

55. DE C. J. Wilson, Sr. – East Carolina: Dominates opposing Conference USA backfields.

56. DE Corey Wootton, Sr. – Northwestern: Could solidify a spot as a top 50 draft pick with another big season this year.

57. QB Daryll Clark, Sr. – Penn State: Grittiness and self-sacrifice might lead some to underestimate Clark, but he is more than just a team leader.

58. TE Rob Gronkowski, Jr. – Arizona: Red-zone threat and possible future first-round draft pick.

59. QB Robert Griffin III, So. – Baylor: A national track star, Griffin wowed everyone last season as a true freshman.

60. DE Brandon Graham, Sr. – Michigan: Two three-sack games last season.

61. QB Max Hall, Sr. – BYU: Was in the running for the Heisman in the earlier weeks last season.

62. QB Colin Kaepernick, Jr. – Nevada: Equally as good with his feet as he is through the air, was drafted by the Cubs in this year’s amateur baseball draft, but politely declined to try out.

63. WR Golden Tate, Jr. – Notre Dame: Leading receiver on arguably the nation’s best passing offense.

64. RB Noel Devine, Jr. – West Virginia: Didn’t score many touchdowns last season, but that is likely to change this year.

65. TE Dennis Pitta, Sr. – BYU: Will be the leading target for Max Hall and the Cougars this season.

66. WR Eric Decker, Sr. – Minnesota: Think Wes Welker. Possibly leaning toward baseball as his post- college football career after being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers.

67. RB MiQuale Lewis, Sr. – Ball State: College football’s leading returning yards and touchdown leader.

68. DT Marvin Austin, Jr. – North Carolina: Big force in the middle that lacks the deserved name recognition.

69. QB Russell Wilson, So. – NC State: First freshman ever to be named the first team All-ACC quarterback.

70. DT Jared Odrick, Sr. – Penn State: Burst onto the scene last year after returning from injury.

71. LB Quan Sturdivant, Jr. – North Carolina: The leader of possibly the most underrated defense in college football.

72. DT Geno Atkins, Sr. – Georgia: Isn’t a stat-sheet stuffer but gets the hard work done.

73. QB Matt Grothe, Sr. – South Florida: Has been shaky as a passer over the last three years, but has unquestioned leadership abilities.

74. WR Jordan Shipley, Sr. – Texas: Colt McCoy’s roommate is now his go-to receiver, and is also a solid return man.

75. LB Pat Angerer, Sr. – Iowa: Slowly gaining national respect as an all-around defender.

76. RB Charles Scott, Sr. – LSU: Powerful back who carried the load for the LSU offense last season.

77. WR Brandon LaFell, Sr. – LSU: Regarded as a better pro prospect than college player, arguably a top three receiver for next year’s draft.

78. WR Damian Williams, Jr. – USC: Will likely be freshman quarterback Matt Barkley’s best option at receiver.

79. DE Greg Romeus, Jr. – Pittsburgh: Energetic pass rusher who blocked three kicks last season.

80. LB Rico McCoy, Sr. – Tennessee: Great range and tackling ability.

81. DE Jammie Kirlew, Sr. – Indiana: Someone’s gotta make the plays for Indiana.

82. RB Evan Royster, Jr. – Penn State: Needs to stay healthy to gain more respect.

83. DE Jermaine Cunningham, Sr. – Florida: Carlos Dunlap’s partner in crime.

84. QB Tim Hiller, Sr. – Western Michigan: One of the more underrated passers in the nation.

Isiah Thomas Is Like a Box of Chocolates...

You know the rest of the quote...at least that's what I'm playing off of.

Isiah Thomas is one of the most confusing, unpredictable human beings in sports. One moment he's sexually harassing a female executive for the New York Knicks, and next thing you know he's in the hospital with a drug overdose.

You may know Isiah Thomas as one of the "Bad Boys" of the Detroit Pistons, where he won two NBA championships and solidified his spot in the Hall of Fame.

Or maybe you know him as the man who slowly and painfully killed off the Knicks during his five years with the organization.

Well, now you know Isiah Thomas as the head coach of an unheralded college basketball program. Of course, critics were skeptical, and thought there was no way this could end well for either party.

After all, how in the world could Thomas provide the needed charisma and allure to recruit high-end talent to a small university in the Sun Belt conference?

There is widespread belief that most recruit's parents would not enjoy hearing about a drug overdose from someone who could possibly be their son's next head coach.

Honestly, what could be better for the overlooked and unanticipated Golden Panthers of Florida International than to bring in an NBA Hall-of-Famer and former NBA head coach to the sunny beaches of Miami? It's not like Thomas could screw up FIU's public image. What public image?

Truth is FIU had nothing to lose by hiring Thomas, and everything to gain.

And FIU's so called "gamble" if you will, is already paying dividends.

On Friday, Thomas and the Golden Panthers received a verbal commitment from a top high school prospect, ranked No. 8 overall in the class of 2010 by ESPN.

If you looked at Dominique Ferguson's profile, you would see he was considering Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Indiana, and UCLA. No mention of FIU, and with good reason.

In the words of Ferguson, "I had kind of forgot he was coaching there. Then we talked on the phone after they were allowed to make phone calls. Coach Thomas, his entire staff, the city, it was an easy choice for me."

Ferguson's ambition is the same as any other high school basketball star, and that's to make it to the NBA. So he saw the logic in going to FIU where he can learn from the best, as many others are sure to follow.

After arriving at FIU Thomas had already drawn attention from top recruits in the class of 2009, Lance Stephenson and Latavious Williams.

While he didn't draw them to FIU, it looks like it was a sign of things to come in terms of drawing interest from big-time prospects.

Thomas has received commitments from Phil Taylor, the No. 39 ranked point guard in the class of 2010, and Chris Coleman, ranked No. 43 overall in the class of 2011 according to ESPN.

The pieces are starting to fall into place for FIU to burst onto the national scene as the next surprising mid-major.

Top Ten Most Aggravating ESPN Analysts

You know those days when all you wanna do is grab a cold drink, sit down, and flip on the tube to ESPN?

You know how agonizing it can be to turn on ESPN right when someone who “pushes your buttons” just so happens to be relaying his uninformed analysis to America?

Well I’ve broken down the most aggravating ESPN analysts, and formed the “Top Ten Most Aggravating ESPN Analysts.”

Consider this a watch list for future encounters.

10. Stephen A. Smith

So Smith may have been “let go” by ESPN back in May, but he still earns the last spot. Stephen A. Smith just might be the most aggravating person to listen to, but it’s his aggravatingness that draws you in. And don’t lie, once Smith starts running his mouth it’s hard to not stay tuned.

9. Chris Berman

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the Swami’s presence. On Sunday Night NFL Countdown, that is. When it comes to baseball, Boomer would not be my number one choice for color commentary. Too often does he betray is baseball ignorance, and who can forget his classic commentary during the Home Run Derby? “It’s way back, it’s way back, it’s way back…that one outta here! Oh, and he falls just short of a home run.”

8. Mark May

Here we have Lou Holtz’ counterpart. If you are going to debate with Mark May, you must know one thing: Mark May is never wrong. Never. Or so he implies. Holtz barely gets a chance to speak before May busts out telling him how and why he’s wrong, and why it will never happen. Course I guess it’s a lose-lose situation anyway.

7. Lou Holtz

Listening to Lou Holtz give his college football analysis is like staring at a bad car wreck, you want to look away, but you just can’t. Holtz may be one of the most respected and accomplished college football coaches in history, but good god as an analyst he just makes me want to tear my hair out.

6. Colin Cowherd

Part of me died when ESPN came out with their newest show, SportsNation. Cowherd picks an opinion with the sole intent of making it sound reasonable, and fails most of the time. The aggravating part is when he thinks he’s on to something, then gets that excited look on his face and continues on but to nowhere in particular. Please ESPN, please put us out of our misery.

5. Dick Vitale

I don’t think this one really needs much of an explanation. Dickie V is pretty much the symbol of college basketball, kinda like Megan Fox is the symbol of sex. Vitale has been around so long I’m sure ESPN can’t really replace him, no matter how much they want to. Can they?

4. Skip Bayless

I’m sure Skip Bayless has your number for many of you, but I actually enjoy First and Ten—go ahead and call me abnormal. However, I can’t deny that Bayless can be one of the most persistent and annoying “analysts” out there. There’s a rumor that Skip Bayless causes more hair loss than aging, although I’ve yet to see conclusive evidence on the matter.

3. Lee Corso

Corso was originally being considered for a higher spot, but something’s just not right putting a guy who recently suffered a heart attack as the most aggravating analyst. Honestly I’ve begin to think if Corso even looks at anything relevant to a team’s current success when commenting. Thankfully ESPN hasn’t lost all sanity when hiring it’s Gameday crew, as Kirk Herbstreit somewhat cancels out Corso’s mindlessness.

2. Mel Kiper Jr.

Another name that needs no explanation. Kiper may know his NFL draftees, (he should, what else does he do on the other 363 days of the year?) but he is nonetheless a pain to listen too. I’ve been wondering why ESPN prefers Kiper over McShay longer than you’ve been wondering if Bigfoot exists.

1. Jay Mariotti

Mariotti takes the cake. If there is a more arrogant, selfish, cheeky, conceited, pompous, pretentious, vain, and egotistic analyst out there, let me at ‘em. Here’s a list of people I’d rather watch on Around the Horn other than Mariotti: Woody Paige, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Chad Ochocinco, and Stephon Marbury. However, in order for Marbury to qualify, he must agree to eat another scoop of Vaseline on air.

Future of Baseball: Top 25 MLB Pitchers 25 Years Old or Younger

You can call this part two of "The Future of Baseball" series. If you haven't seen the "Top 25 MLB Position Players 25 Years Old or Younger" I recommend you check it out.

I have come up with a list of the top 25 MLB pitchers 25 years old or younger. There are a few requirements to be eligible for the rankings.

First, obviously, the player must be no older than 25 by July 31 of this year. Only players currently in the MLB are eligible, so minor league prospects are a no-go. A starting pitcher must have accumulated at least 80 innings to be eligible for the top 25, but they are still eligible for the honorable mentions section if not.

While a pitcher's record is important, I tend to look more at a pitcher's ERA and WHIP, as those are areas that they can control. For instance, Zack Greinke's record might not be eye-popping because he plays on a terrible team, but his ERA and WHIP are phenomenal.

Next to the ranking will be the player’s position, team, and regular season stats leading up through August 2. Here is the stats key:

SP—Starting Pitcher

RP—Relief Pitcher

IP—Innings Pitched

W-L—Won-Loss

ERA—Earned Run Average

K—Strikeout

BB—Walk

WHIP—Walks and Hits Allowed per Inning Pitched

SV—Save

The spots 20-25 were difficult to rank, and there are a few deserving pitchers that just missed the top 25. An argument could be made for any of those spots, so let me know what you think.

1. SP, Tim Lincecum—San Francisco Giants: 156.2 IP, 12-3 W-L, 2.18 ERA, 191 K, 41 BB, 1.05 WHIP, Age: 25

The reigning NL Cy Young winner hasn't slacked off one bit. Lincecum is ranked in the NL's top three in wins, strikeouts, WHIP, complete games, innings pitched, ERA, and win percentage. Lincecum has thrown two shutouts this season. That's one heck of a resume right there folks.

2. SP, Zack Greinke—Kansas City Royals: 147.1 IP, 10-6 W-L, 2.08 ERA, 153 K, 28 BB, 1.09 WHIP, Age: 25

I think all baseball fans pity Greinke. So much talent, so little run support playing for the Royals. Greinke has an impressive resume as well, ranking in the AL's top three in strikeouts, WHIP, ERA, and complete games. Greinke has also thrown two shutouts this season.

3. SP, Matt Cain—San Francisco Giants: 140.0 IP, 12-2 W-L, 2.12 ERA, 112 K, 54 BB, 1.17 WHIP, Age: 24

Looking amongst Giants pitchers, you barely have enough time to recollect yourself after seeing Lincecum's stats before you are hit yet again, this time by Matt Cain. Cain ranks in the NL's top three in wins, ERA, win percentage, and complete games.

4. SP, Felix Hernandez—Seattle Mariners: 152.1 IP, 12-4 W-L, 2.78 ERA, 141 K, 43 BB, 1.16 WHIP, Age: 23

It's hard to believe King Felix is only 23, as it seems like he's been around for much longer. Hernandez ranks in the AL's top five in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, ERA, and win percentage.

5. SP, Cole Hamels—Philadelphia Phillies: 123.0 IP, 7-6 W-L, 4.68 ERA, 107 K, 23 BB, 1.32 WHIP, Age: 25

After a World Series championship and MVP award, Hamels has struggled with injury throughout the season which has led to his inconsistency on the mound.

6. SP, Josh Johnson—Florida Marlins: 141.0 IP, 10-2 W-L, 2.87 ERA, 114 K, 36 BB, 1.12 WHIP, Age: 25

Johnson has been spectacular in his first career All-Star season, rankings in the NL's top 10 in wins, ERA, win percentage, innings pitched, WHIP, and complete games.

7. SP, Yovani Gallardo—Milwaukee Brewers: 135.0 IP, 10-7 W-L, 3.13 ERA, 147 K, 64 BB, 1.23 WHIP, Age: 23

Gallardo can be inconsistent at times, but when he's on, he's dangerous. An interesting tidbit: Gallardo is the only pitcher to ever hit a home run off of Randy Johnson, which he did in his first start of the season in April. He ranks third in the NL in strikeouts.

8. RP, Jonathan Broxton—Los Angeles Dodgers: 47.2 IP, 7-0 W-L, 24 SV, 2.83 ERA, 74 K, 20 BB, 0.92 WHIP, Age: 25

The first reliever to make the list, Broxton is excellent in nearly every category. Broxton ranks fourth in the NL in saves, converting 24 out of 27 chances.

9. SP, Edwin Jackson—Detroit Tigers: 139.2 IP, 7-5 W-L, 2.64 ERA, 109 K, 45 BB, 1.15 WHIP, Age: 25

Jackson has pitched well this season after being acquired from the Rays in the offseason. Jackson ranks fourth in the AL in WHIP and third in the AL in ERA.

10. SP, Chad Billingsley—Los Angeles Dodgers: 143.2 IP, 11-6 W-L, 3.82 ERA, 140 K, 63 BB, 1.28 WHIP, Age:24

While Billingsley can be shaky, he has proven himself as a reliable option for the best team in baseball. Billingsley ranks fifth in the NL in strikeouts, although he also ranks fourth in walks.

11. SP, Jon Lester—Boston Red Sox: 134.0 IP, 9-7 W-L, 3.90 ERA, 148 K, 44 BB, 1.31 WHIP, Age: 25

Lester has been shaky this season, but he is 5-2 in his last 10 starts. Lester ranks third in the AL in strikeouts and has thrown two complete games.

12. SP, Jair Jurrjens—Atlanta Braves: 139.0 IP, 9-8 W-L, 2.85 ERA, 98 K, 50 BB, 1.24 WHIP, Age: 23

Through all the Tommy Hanson hype, Jurrjens is sometimes overlooked. He has been solid and steady all year for the Braves, and ranks ninth in the NL in ERA.

13. SP, Joba Chamberlain—New York Yankees: 110.2 IP, 7-2 W-L, 3.58 ERA, 97 K, 50 BB, 1.40 WHIP, Age: 23

We all know what Joba is capable of, and he has started to consistently show his true potential. He has struggled with his control, and ranks sixth in the AL in walks even though he's only pitched 110 innings. He does, however, rank third in the AL in win percentage.

14. RP, Joakim Soria—Kansas City Royals: 31.2 IP, 2-0 W-L, 18 SV, 1.71 ERA, 40 K, 8 BB, 0.95 WHIP, Age: 25

Soria often goes unnoticed, reason being he plays for the Royals. Soria ranks ninth in the AL in saves and it's a shame he doesn't get more opportunities.

15. SP, Clayton Kershaw—Los Angeles Dodgers: 120.2 IP, 8-5 W-L, 2.76 ERA, 117 K, 65 BB, 1.23 WHIP, Age: 21

The young lefty often struggles with his control, as he ranked second in the NL in walks, but he is still 5-1 in his last 10 starts. Kershaw is ranked sixth in the NL in ERA.

16. SP, Matt Garza—Tampa Bay Rays: 136.2 IP, 7-8 W-L, 3.69 ERA, 121 K, 53 BB, 1.22 WHIP, Age: 25

Garza's got great stuff, but he struggles with inconsistency and control. He ranks third in the AL in walks, although he does rank eighth in strikeouts.

17. SP, Ubaldo Jimenez—Colorado Rockies: 143.2 IP, 8-9 W-L, 3.76 ERA, 128 K, 54 BB, 1.25 WHIP, Age: 25

Ubaldo has been off and on this season, although he is 2-0 in his last four starts. Jimenez ranks seventh in the NL in strikeouts and sixth in the NL in innings pitched.

18. SP, John Danks—Chicago White Sox: 119.1 IP, 9-7 W-L, 4.00 ERA, 100 K, 46 BB, 1.31 WHIP, Age: 24

Danks has been good of late, with a 4-1 record over his last six starts. He's always had upside, and it appears now he's beginning to hit his stride.

19. RP, Andrew Bailey—Oakland Athletics: 61.0 IP, 4-3 W-L, 14 SV, 2.21 ERA, 69 K, 22 BB, 1.02 WHIP, Age: 25

The rookie closer has just about been the most productive player for the struggling Athletics. He has a great ERA and WHIP, especially for a rookie.

20. SP, Ricky Romero—Toronto Blue Jays: 109.2 IP, 10-4 W-L, 3.53 ERA, 87 K, 42 BB, 1.38 WHIP, Age: 24

A leading Rookie of the Year candidate, Romero has been on tear as of late. Romero is 7-1 over his last 10 starts, and is ranked ninth in the AL in wins and seventh in win percentage.

21. SP, Kevin Slowey—Minnesota Twins: 90.2 IP, 10-3 W-L, 4.86 ERA, 75 K, 15 BB, 1.41 WHIP, Age: 25

Slowey hasn't pitched for a month, and is most likely out for the rest of the year after having surgery on his right wrist. It's a shame, as Slowey already reached double digits in the win column.

22. SP, Johnny Cueto—Cincinnati Reds: 126.1 IP, 8-8 W-L, 4.06 ERA, 95 K, 43 BB, 1.34 WHIP, Age:23

Cueto has struggled of late, losing four of his last five starts. Cueto struggles with inconsistency like many other young pitcher, but he's got good stuff.

23. SP, Brad Bergesen—Baltimore Orioles: 123.1 IP, 7-5 W-L, 3.43 ERA, 65 K, 32 BB, 1.28 WHIP, Age: 23

While Bergesen is not a strikeout pitcher, he makes up for it in other ways. Bergesen doesn't get much attention, or run support for that matter, playing on the Orioles, but he's definitely a young talent.

24. SP, Brett Anderson—Oakland Athletics: 108.0 IP, 6-8 W-L, 4.33 ERA, 85 K, 31 BB, 1.31 WHIP, Age: 21

Anderson has made the most out of his rookie season, showing that he's got good stuff and also has good control. Anderson is 3-1 over his last six starts, in which he tossed a shutout against the Red Sox.

25. SP, Rick Porcello—Detroit Tigers: 105.1 IP, 9-7 W-L, 4.36 ERA, 55 K, 35 BB, 1.41 WHIP, Age: 20

The 20-year-old rookie has been up and down all season. Porcello has gone 1-3 over his last six starts, but the talent and upside is undoubtedly there.

Honorable Mentions (In no particular order):

SP, John Lannan—Washington Nationals

SP, Dallas Braden—Oakland Athletics

SP, Max Scherzer—Arizona Diamondbacks

SP, Chris Volstad—Florida Marlins

Future of Baseball: Top 25 MLB Position Players 25 Years Old or Younger

I have come up with a list of the top 25 MLB position players who are 25 years old or younger. There are a few requirements to be eligible for the rankings.

First, obviously, the player must be no older than 25 years old by July 31 of this year. Only players currently in the MLB are eligible, so minor league prospects are a no-go. Also, a player must have a minimum of 200 at-bats this season.

Next to the ranking will be the player’s position, team, and regular season stats leading up through July 31. Here is the stats key:

ab=At-Bat

hr=Home Run

rbi=Runs Batted In

ba=Batting Average

r=Runs

sb=Stolen Bases

Let me know what you think of the rankings.

1. 1B, Prince Fielder - Milwaukee Brewers: 366ab, 25hr, 91rbi, .309ba, 66r, 1sb, Age: 25

I wanted to put Han-Ram first, I really did. But there is no denying that Prince Fielder has turned into one of baseball’s most elite players at one of its most elite positions. He is second in the MLB in RBI behind Albert Pujols, while hitting a substantial amount of homers and keeping his average above .300, not to mention he won the Home Run Derby.

2. SS, Hanley Ramirez - Florida Marlins: 363ab, 16hr, 69rbi, .344ba, 60r, 16sb, Age: 25

As it stands, Ramirez is the reason Albert Pujols won’t be winning the Triple Crown this year. The former Red Sox prospect acquired in the Josh Beckett trade, Ramirez is one of the most dangerous players in baseball, with the combination of speed, average, and power.

3. 3B, Evan Longoria - Tampa Bay Rays: 362ab, 21hr, 78rbi, .273ba, 57r, 2sb, Age:23

After winning the AL Rookie of the Year award last season, it was only a matter of time until Longoria became one of the league’s premier players. He is already an MVP candidate in his first full season.

4. OF, Ryan Braun - Milwaukee Brewers: 389ab, 21hr, 70rbi, .314ba, 74r, 9sb, Age: 25

The 2007 National League Rookie of the Year, Braun is already one of the best outfielders in the MLB. He ranks in the top ten in the NL in batting average, RBI, home runs, runs, slugging percentage, and OPS.

5. 2B, Dustin Pedroia - Boston Red Sox: 403ab, 5hr, 44rbi, .300ba, 72r, 14sb, Age: 25

The reigning American League MVP, Pedroia is a Gold Glove shortstop who hits for average and runs the base paths well. Although Pedroia is having a down year as compared to last season, he is nonetheless producing at a solid level for the Red Sox.

6. OF, Adam Jones - Baltimore Orioles: 379ab, 17hr, 59rbi, .296ba, 65r, 8sb, Age: 24

Arrived in Baltimore as part of the Erik Bedard trade. Jones is your classic five-tool outfielder, as he has speed, hits for average, hits for power, has a great throwing arm, and is great defensively.

7. 3B, Ryan Zimmerman - Washington Nationals: 402ab, 20hr, 67rbi, .286ba, 71r, 0sb, Age: 24

Honestly, Zimmerman might be the only bright spot on the Nationals' roster. He still has managed to drive in 67 runs and score 71 runs in the Nationals' “not-so-deep-and-talented” lineup.

8. 3B, Pablo Sandoval - San Francisco Giants: 367ab, 16hr, 63rbi, .327ba, 44r, 4sb, Age: 22

Kung Fu Panda may not look like a formidable foe on the outside, but opponents only make that mistake once. He did not make the All-Star game, which has been a controversial topic.

9. C, Brian McCann - Atlanta Braves: 296ab, 12hr, 52rbi, .301ba, 38r, 3sb, Age: 25

Although it seems like he has been around forever, yes, Brian McCann is only 25. Arguably the best all-around catcher in the MLB, McCann has gotten his dues in making four consecutive All-Star games.

10. 3B, Mark Reynolds - Arizona Diamondbacks: 378ab, 29hr, 69rbi, .278ba, 68r, 18sb, Age: 25

Barely missing this year’s All-Star game, Reynolds nonetheless continues to pound the ball, ranking second in the MLB in home runs. Reynolds also ranks in the top ten of the NL in runs, stolen bases, and RBI.

11. OF, Justin Upton - Arizona Diamondbacks: 369ab, 19hr, 63rbi, .298ba, 64r, 15sb, Age: 21

The younger brother of B.J. Upton, one could make the argument that Justin Upton has already surpassed his older brother. Upton was the first overall pick in the 2005 MLB draft by the Diamondbacks.

12. 1B, Joey Votto - Cincinnati Reds: 256ab, 16hr, 50rbi, .340ba, 43r, 4sb, Age: 25

Votto continues to impress after his breakout season last year. He made a trip to the DL, which has limited his at-bats, but still continues to pound the ball while batting for a whopping average.

13. OF, Matt Kemp - Los Angeles Dodgers: 378ab, 13hr, 59rbi, .315ba, 57r, 22sb, Age: 24

Ranking in the top ten in the NL in batting average and stolen bases, it’s obvious Kemp knows how to get on base and what to do once he gets there. Kemp also has a solid amount of home runs and RBIs.

14. OF, Nick Markakis - Baltimore Orioles: 410ab, 12hr, 70rbi, .298ba, 63r, 3sb, Age: 25

Another guy who seems like he’s been around for forever, Markakis ranks sixth in the AL in RBI total, while hitting for a solid average.

15. OF, Jacoby Ellsbury - Boston Red Sox: 384ab, 6hr, 35rbi, .302ba, 55r, 47sb, Age: 25

One of the premier speedsters of the MLB rankings second in stolen bases, Ellsbury hits for average and is also excellent in the field.

16. SS, Troy Tulowitzki - Colorado Rockies: 333ab, 19hr, 50rbi, .264ba, 58r, 14sb, Age: 24

Tulo’s arm, range, and instinct at his respective position are highly regarded. He has a good combination of power and speed, something you don’t see often at the shortstop position.

17. OF, B.J. Upton - Tampa Bay Rays: 394ab, 7hr, 36rbi, .244ba, 63r, 32sb, Age: 24

Nicknamed “B.J.” as in Bossman Junior, Upton has always been regarded as having tremendous upside. Although he struggles with consistency with his average, Upton is always a threat on the basepaths once he gets on.

18. SS, Erick Aybar - Los Angeles Angels: 294ab, 3hr, 39rbi, .313ba, 41r, 8sb. Age: 25

Although Aybar mainly plays shortstop, he is also capable of playing second base and outfield. Aybar is a great utility guy who hits for average and can hold his own on the base paths.

19. 1B, James Loney - Los Angeles Dodgers: 385ab, 7hr, 63rbi, .286ba, 48r, 6sb, Age: 25

While Loney might not have the explosive power that some first basemen do, he makes up for it with his ability to knock in runs on a consistent basis. Loney is also a very good fielder, committing only three errors all season.

20. 1B, Billy Butler - Kansas City Royals: 376ab, 11hr, 47rbi, .290ba, 44r, 0sb, Age: 23

Many say that Butler has the potential to be a power and average guy, and he has begun to show that this season, although playing for the Royals doesn’t give him a chance to expose himself fully.

21. OF, Andrew McCutchen - Pittsburgh Pirates: 210ab, 3hr, 25rbi, .281ba, 33r, 9sb, Age:22

Here is proof that the Pirates are not willing to trade away every valuable player to their team. Called up after Nate McLouth was traded to the Braves, McCutchen has shown in his rookie season that he can hit for average while being a threat on the base paths.

22. 3B, Ian Stewart - Colorado Rockies: 278ab, 17hr, 48rbi, .223ba, 51r, 7sb, Age: 24

Although struggling with consistency at the plate, Stewart has shown a nice amount of power at third base. He has showcased his versatility by playing second base and outfield as well for the Rockies.

23. OF, Jay Bruce - Cincinnati Reds: 299ab, 18hr, 41rbi, .207ba, 38r, 3sb, Age: 22

Currently on the DL, Bruce has struggled with his batting average throughout the season. Bruce has shown he is a dangerous power hitter, and he is also solid in the field.

24. OF, Nolan Reimold - Baltimore Orioles: 213ab, 10hr, 29rbi, .286ba, 29r, 6sb, Age: 25

Reimold has burst onto the scene as a candidate for AL Rookie of the Year. Provides speed, average, and power as well as a solid glove in the outfield.

25. OF, Colby Rasmus - St. Louis Cardinals: 306ab, 11hr, 35rbi, .255ba, 47r, 1sb, Age: 22

Arguably the leading candidate for NL Rookie of the Year, Rasmus has been a solid contributor all season from the plate and in the field.

Honorable Mentions (In no particular order):

C Kurt Suzuki - Oakland Athletics

3B Martin Prado - Atlanta Braves

3B Andy LaRoche - Pittsburgh Pirates

SS Elvis Andrus - Texas Rangers

OF Dexter Fowler - Colorado Rockies

OF Gerardo Parra - Arizona Diamondbacks

OF Denard Span - Minnesota Twins

Carlos Boozer is Needed By the Miami Heat

Original article at OnlineSportsFanatic.com.

The year 2010 is looming. It will be an important offseason for the NBA, and that’s an understatement. There are many notable players that will be on the market, which is also an understatement.

Arguably the two biggest names out there are LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. There have been many different “sources” that have claimed LeBron said this or LeBron said that, so I have decided to block out all the whispers involving “The King”.

In my opinion the top three “superstars” of the NBA go LeBron, Kobe, D-Wade, although not necessarily in that order. So now that Kobe has signed an extension and LeBron rumors are being blocked out, that leaves us with Dwyane Wade.

Wade has said if the Heat are championship contenders he wants to stay, which means one thing. The Miami Heat have to make a move during this offseason. They need to show Wade that he is the centerpiece of their franchise, which he absolutely is, and that they are willing to do nearly anything to retain him.

No one brings more intensity to the court than D-Wade.

The Jazz matched Portland’s offer sheet for forward Paul Millsap, meaning it is almost inevitable Carlos Boozer will be dealt sooner rather than later. The Heat and Jazz have already begun talks of a possible deal, as they should.

Obviously acquiring Boozer now would not be the equivalent of acquiring Shaq back in 2006 when they won the NBA Finals, but will they be championship contenders?

Yes.

Forward Udonis Haslem would most likely be involved in a trade for Boozer, but they would still have an intriguing starting lineup. Rookie second-round draft pick “Super” Mario Chalmers was a pleasant surprise for the Heat at point guard. He would be followed by Wade at shooting guard, and possibly last year’s draft’s No. 2 overall pick Michael Beasley at small forward. Slide Boozer in at power forward and Jermaine O’Neal at center, and you have a championship caliber team.

Sure there are some things that could go awry, but the Heat would be improved and ready to compete with the East’s elite. More importantly they will be keeping Dwyane Wade happy in advance.

If I’m Pat Riley, I don’t give D-Wade any extra time to change his mind.

Allen Iverson to the Clippers? Oh, the Possibilities

Original article on OnlineSportsFanatic.com

For years now, the Los Angeles Clippers have been known as the graveyard of the NBA, where promising careers hit an abrupt end and the Clipper faithful have seen more busts than they have wins.

Last year, we saw confident point guard Baron Davis bravely try to bring the Clippers back as a respectable franchise, but to no avail.

But this year, things were looking up. Being certain he was the guy, they selected phenom forward Blake Griffin No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft. Third time’s the charm, right?

This would leave them with a crowded front court, meaning someone had to go. And wouldn’t you know it, they found a sucker by the name of the Memphis Grizzlies to take Zach Randolph off their hands.

Could this be real? Had the Clippers' front office just made two consecutive reality-based decisions?

Now all the Clippers were lacking was another corrupted, aging, superstar guard to compliment Baron Davis and they would be set.

Enter Allen Iverson. The Clippers have reportedly contacted Iverson’s agent Leon Rose and are “seriously negotiating” with Iverson.

All they’re lacking now is Stephon “Starbury” Marbury and their back court will be set. It looks like the Clippers have not been paying any attention to what has been going on surrounding the Billups for Iverson trade.

Long story short: Nuggets acquire Billups, advance to Western Conference Finals, Pistons acquire Iverson, team chemistry goes haywire and their playoff run ends prematurely via sweep in the first round.

The Clippers are looking to build on their young core of Griffin, Al Thornton and Eric Gordon, but quite frankly I see nothing but another front row seat at next year’s draft lottery if the Clippers starting back court consists of Baron Davis and Allen Iverson.

Where NBA Forwards Charlie Villanueva and Chris Bosh's Battle For Tweets Happens

Original article, including video, on OnlineSportsFanatic.com.

The phenomenon that is Twitter has captivated many, and the current race between NBA forwards Charlie Villanueva and Chris Bosh to 50,000 followers will certainly have many tuned in.

I’m just hoping for a close finish, but seeing Bosh performing the Single Ladies dance would be hysterical. Back last season, Villanueva tweeted from the locker room during half time of a game, and was later fined.

When I was watching PTI and heard about Villanueva’s halftime tweet, I didn’t pay much attention. It has grown on me. Entertaining guys like Villanueva and Bosh are always fun to follow, not to mention it’s pretty cool to see what all professional athletes do in the offseason or in their spare time.

As of now Charlie has 45,363 followers, while Chris has 45,692 followers. You can also follow OSF on twitter!

LeBron James: Just One (Or Two) of Those Days for the King

As you may or may not know, LeBron James kicked off his Nike-sponsored LeBron James Skills Academy on Monday, which features some of the best high school and college players in the nation.

What you may have heard, but thanks to Nike will not see, is that King James got dunked on during a pickup game featuring college players and the King himself.

The dunker was Xavier transfer Jordan Crawford, brother of former Kentucky star Joe Crawford and a former Indiana player. Crawford is a 6' 4" shooting guard. James is a 6'8" small forward and arguably the best player in the world.

Michael Gilchrist, the No. 1 high school player in the class of 2011 according to Scout.com, said, “It happened, and it was bad. That was something to see.”

There were a couple cameramen on scene, but the word is that James called over Lynn Merritt, Nike’s Basketball Senior Director, and shortly after the tapes were confiscated.

Now all of that happened Monday. Tuesday morning, however, LeBron had a new story brewing, once again at his expense.

A source close to Trevor Ariza, who recently committed to the Rockets, said James told Ariza that he would be staying with the Cavaliers past 2010. A source close to James, (an interesting game this is), has said that James never told Ariza anything of the sort.

You think you’ve got it tough? Just look at LeBron James and what he has to go through, because it takes a lot of time and energy to get dunked on and then have to get someone to confiscate the tapes for you.

Top 10 Entertainers of the Sports World

For the full article, including videos, please go to OnlineSportsFanatic.com.

We all love guys like Jim Carrey, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Steve Carell, and all the others who never fail to bring us entertainment.

While athletes are often given the stereotype of being deadbeats when outside of the sports world, there are always athletes out there bringing us entertainment in another form.

There are many professional athletes who attempt to be more than their title poses. Some guys succeed, and some fail, although sometimes we can't help but laugh at the ones who epically fail.

Sure, some may be annoying, but they still add a certain zest to the sports community and throw a little twist into SportsCenter every now and then.

I’ve come up with a list of the top 10 entertainers of the sports world. Whether they make you laugh or make you want to bang your head on the table, or maybe even both, they are entertaining nonetheless.

Note that this list includes current figures in the sports world, not meaning only active players, but people still involved in the sports world.

Also, headlining stories involving conflict with the law are not considered entertainment on this list (Sorry Pacman and the other guy, I think you know who I’m referring too).

10. Lane Kiffin: College Football, head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers

After getting fired as head coach of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders by the infamous Al Davis, Kiffin wasted no time getting himself and Tennessee back on the national news.

Cocky to say the least, Kiffin is not afraid to speak his mind, whatever the subject may be.

9. Warren Sapp: NFL, retired

Whether on or off the field, you can always count on Sapp to run his mouth.

Sapp definitely has an entertaining personality, and his actions do not take away from that.

8. Mark Cuban: NBA Owner, Dallas Mavericks

Besides being an American billionaire entrepreneur, Cuban certainly provides some entertaining rants, quotes, dancing, and feuds, with the latest concerning his remarks to the mother of Denver Nuggets player Kenyon Martin.

7. Terrell Owens: NFL, Buffalo Bills

TO always voices his opinion. Always.

Last season, he said he thought his own quarterback and tight end were secretly concocting their own plays so that they can exclude TO.

Tired of the current soap operas on TV? Tune into Buffalo next season, the new home of this always “entertaining” wideout.

6. Ron Artest: NBA, Los Angeles Lakers

Ron Artest has always been one of the most entertaining characters of the NBA, from his flamboyant hairstyles to making his own rap CD.

You may remember the brawl between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons, where Artest had a key role.

5. John McEnroe : Tennis, retired

John McEnroe is known for being an excellent tennis player, but is maybe remembered just as much for being a guy who threw many outrageous tantrums.

4. John Daly: Golf

Daly is the most intriguing figure in golf.

Known for his sometimes ravishing lifestyle, alcohol and gambling problems, and his carefree approach towards the media, Daly is one of the most unpredictable figures in sports.

3. Chad Ochocinco: NFL, Cincinnati Bengals

Chad Johnson, ahem, Ochocinco.

You either love him or you hate him.

Either way, he never falls short in providing some sort of entertainment, quality or not.

2. Charles Barkley: NBA, retired

Whether he was attacking an opponent or even an opponent’s mascot, Sir Charles always provided that quality entertainment.

1. Shaquille O’Neal: NBA, Cleveland Cavaliers

Superman. Big Daddy. The Diesel. The Big Aristotle.

The nicknames are seemingly endless for Shaq, as are his insightful quotes and playful interviews.

From dancing with the JabbaWockeeZ to challenging LeBron James to an intros competition, Shaq rounds out this top 10 list at No. 1.

Why Goodell Needs To Consider Vick and Burress Joining the UFL

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has a tough decision to make regarding quarterback Michael Vick.

You may have heard of the new professional football league, the United Football League, which opens its inaugural season this October.

As of now, the UFL contains four teams and will play a six-game schedule. Remember Dennis Green, Jim Haslett, Jim Fassel, or Ted Cottrell? They are the new head coaches of UFL San Francisco, UFL Orlando, UFL Las Vegas, and UFL New York.

So now you may have a picture in your mind of what the UFL will be at first, seemingly a sort of developmental league for the NFL.

Goodell stated that for Michael Vick to be reinstated into the NFL, he must show “genuine remorse." What better way to test Vick’s “remorse” other than dropping him off in a second-rate league for a year? This will give him the chance to show he can behave at a professional level, while giving NFL teams a chance to see if he is worth taking a risk on.

This could be the new system for the NFL. As of now, teams are hesitant to go after Plaxico Burress, who accidentally shot himself in the leg while at a nightclub. He has been charged with two felony weapon counts, and is still waiting to be convicted.

Goodell needs to take charge and say something along the lines of, “Plaxico, you were stupid and brought a loaded weapon into a nightclub, resulting in the accidental shooting of yourself. I am willing to give you a second chance, but first you will need to show your “remorse” by playing one season in the UFL, and proving to the NFL that you are ready to move on and leave the past behind.”

The UFL plans on ending their season around Thanksgiving, which means the services of Vick and Burress could be available for the last few games of the 2009 season if they can find a team willing to sign them.

Donte Stallworth, on the other hand, is done. Sure, he may of had some unfortunate luck, but manslaughter or not, he still killed someone while intoxicated, which should end his NFL career right away.

Sending some of the NFL’s “troubled” players to the UFL would be a win-win situation for everyone. Goodell and Co. get an easy way out and get to enjoy themselves while they’re at it. Not to mention the UFL will attract more attention to strengthen their success.

What more fun could Goodell ask for than to be able to “demote” some of the troublesome egos of the NFL to the minor leagues?

Is Mark Sanchez-Josh Freeman the Second Coming of Matt Ryan-Joe Flacco?

This past season, NFL fans were pleasantly surprised by the performance of rookie quarterbacks Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco. Drafted No. 3 and No. 18, respectively, both players led their teams to the playoffs.

Ryan led his team to an 11-5 regular season record and a first-round exit from the playoffs, while Flacco, aided by one of the NFL's strongest defenses, also led the Ravens to an 11-5 regular season record but won his first two playoff games to reach the AFC Championship game, where they fell to the eventual champs, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In this year's draft, three quarterbacks were selected in the first round; Matthew Stafford No. 1 to the Lions, Mark Sanchez No. 5 to the Jets, and Josh Freeman No. 19 to the Buccaneers.

With the Lions coming off the worst season in NFL history, even if Stafford has an amazing rookie season, the Lions' chances of making the playoffs next season are quite slim at best.

The Jets traded up to draft Sanchez, who they have made clear is their quarterback of the future. Although the Jets play in arguably the toughest division in the NFL, they will still have a good shot, under new head coach Rex Ryan, of making the playoffs next season.

The Buccaneers also traded up to draft Freeman, but the offseason signing of Byron Leftwich makes Freeman's shot at winning the starting job more difficult.

Either way, the Jets and Buccaneers will be playoff-contending teams, and both could end up with a rookie behind center. After this past season, where Ryan and Flacco proved they could get the job done, that may not be such a bad thing.

Sanchez does not have the stud running back Matt Ryan had, and Josh Freeman does not have the Joe Flacco's dominant defense. It is unlikely Sanchez or Freeman will lead their teams to the level of success accomplished by Ryan and Flacco, but that does not mean they will not lead their teams to successful seasons.

Lakers May Soon Be Our New NBA Champions, but Give Credit Where It Is Due

In all reality, if the Orlando Magic do not walk out of Amway Arena tonight with a W, the Lakers will have all but officially won the 2009 NBA Finals, Kobe's first title without Shaq.

The Magic returned from an uneventful game one blowout loss looking to even the series count, but could not hold off the Lakers in overtime.

Kobe Bryant is reminding all of us who might have forgotten why he is the best player in the NBA. Having Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, and Trevor Ariza among others certainly helps his cause, but when it is all said and done, Kobe will be mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan and other NBA greats.

As much as we may want to praise the Lakers in all their glory and crown Kobe “The Next MJ,” we still must give credit where credit is due. At the beginning of the playoffs, it was all about LeBron vs. Kobe, from all of the playoff previews and predictions you might have read to the over hyped Nike puppet ads.

The Magic, however, thought they should have a say in the matter, and rightfully so. After downing the Philadelphis 76ers, they moved on to challenge the Kevin Garnett-less but ever so resilient Boston Celtics. After falling into a 3-2 hole in the series, Dwight Howard had enough.

In a post-game press conference, he showed a side of him that many of us had not seen before, criticizing his coach for not getting him the ball and guaranteeing the Magic would come back and win the series. This provided what seemed like the much-needed spark for this Magic squad, and true to his word, Howard led the Magic past the Celtics and onward to the Eastern Conference Finals to face he "Chosen One" and the seemingly unstoppable force that was the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Going into the series, the Cavs had swept their previous opponents, the Pistons and the Hawks, and had a record of 8-0 in the 2009 playoffs. They had lost two total home games all year, holding a record of 43-2. The Magic did not back down and went on to win game one.

Down to the final second in game two, it seemed that the Magic had achieved the impossible, knocking off Cleveland in two straight games on the road. Then, as if right on cue, LeBron James hit the game-winning fade away three as time expired, rousing comparisons to Jordan with some going as far to say they had seen the second coming of Michael Jordan.

Unfortunately for Mo Williams of the Cavaliers, only one series guarantee would come true in the 2009 playoffs, as the Magic would go on to win the series on a count of 4-2. The Magic had stunned America, quieting those who said it was “destiny” for Los Angeles and Cleveland to meet in the Finals.

So while those who are in a comfortable position now to speak freely of how the “overachieving” Orlando Magic never had a chance, or just got lucky, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the Magic on an impressive and memorable journey to the NBA Finals. They deserve every bit of it.

Preseason Mid-Major Top 25

How many preseason top 25 polls have you seen so far? I know, they’re getting old. I have decided to make things a little more interesting by releasing a preseason mid-major top 25 poll.

You guessed it, containing only mid-major teams, as in excluding the Big 6 power conferences.

So lay back and relax, because you will not see a team named Kentucky on this list, and you will not see any teams named North Carolina or Michigan State on this list.

Two Prospects Left in the Rivals Top 100

The national signing period for college basketball ended on May 20, but there are still two prospects remaining in the Rivals.com Top 100. Lance Stephenson (No. 11 overall) and Noel Johnson (No. 53 overall) are the lone players still searching for a school.

At this time last year, Stephenson was considered one of the top catches in the class of 2009, and he had his pick of schools to choose from. Now among allegations that Stephenson groped a 17-year-old girl, his recruiting picture has gotten a little more blurry.

According to his father, Lance Stephenson Sr., the younger Stephenson has narrowed his list down to Arizona and Maryland, but he wants to clear his name before making his final decision.

Recent Memphis commit Latavious Williams has said that he wants to play with Stephenson, so I would not rule that out as a possible destination as well. First it was Eric Bledsoe, then Williams, and now Florida International head coach Isaiah Thomas is said to be going hard after Lance Stephenson.

With Stephenson being of “one-and-done” mentality, Thomas may appeal to Stephenson because of his NBA connections, but I doubt Stephenson would want to show of his skills in the Sun Belt conference.

Noel Johnson decided to bail on his commitment to USC, with his father saying the current situation surrounding the Trojan’s program is not what Johnson wants to walk into his freshman year.

As of now Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami, and Pittsburgh are all potential college choices for Johnson, according to Rivals.com. There are rumors that Johnson, who is from Georgia, wants to stay closer to home.

Should he decide for Paul Hewitt and Georgia Tech, he would join an already stellar recruiting class that contains star center Derrick Favors (No. 3 overall).

Preseason Top 25 (As of May 16)

Progress is being made, however so slowly, in the “water-testing” process for the NBA draft.

I have made these rankings on my own assumptions of early departures, and even if a player has signed an agent and has exhausted their college eligibility, they are still listed next to “Assumed Players Leaving Early”.

June 15th is the deadline to withdraw one’s name from the NBA draft early entry list, and that will shake things up again once that time is upon us.

Looking on the Bright Side: College Stars Who Stick Around

Every year college basketball’s stars have the option of contemplating a premature move to the NBA, and if they are projected as a high pick they usually take advantage of the opportunity.

It is always a given that players such as Blake Griffin, Hasheem Thabeet, James Harden, etc. that are top seven picks will go pro early. If a player is projected as a lottery pick (top 14), they almost always leave school as well. but this past off season has yielded some surprises, and for the good of the college game.

What Are Words Worth? College Basketball Recruits Back Out Easily

Time and time again this past year, a recruit has pulled out of his agreement to attend a college, whether that be a verbal or signed commitment, and “reopened” the process.

You have to take into account family situations, coaching changes, and other factors high school kids deal with, but it has become too easy for a recruit to just withdraw from a commitment. Coaches and team personnel put a countless amount of time into recruiting, and if a signed recruit decides to walk out, that leaves the program at a big disadvantage.

Once a recruit has given his commitment, a coach would like to think he has tied off all of the loose ends there and can focus on other team necessities.

For example, when John Calipari decided to take the Kentucky job, he basically left Memphis in ruins. I know the head coach is oftentimes the main reason a player wants to play for that school, but something is not right about a player being able to reopen the entire recruiting process, leaving that school disarmed.
