No Nets in LeBron James' Future

LeBron James is the "King of the World" today.

According to ESPN.com, the 24-year-old won his first MVP award today beating out the likes of Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade.

James’ Cleveland Cavaliers look like they are on their way to winning it all. LeBron transformed a team, a culture, profit and just about everything else in his first six seasons in the NBA.

LeBron did this all in, gasp, the small market of Cleveland, Ohio where he will most definitely stay put for the rest of his career.

Seriously, what more can James accomplish in New York with the Knicks or the Nets that he cannot accomplish where he is?

Would a move to New York launch him to even bigger stardom? Will it earn him tons of more money?

I highly doubt it and I don’t even know why I thought another team in a bigger market could have lured him away from his hometown in the first place.

Well, I have two reasons—the first, which I consider absurd now, was his friendship with part owner of the Nets, Jay-Z. I mean if LeBron does not come to Brooklyn, are they going to stop being friends? Will Jay-Z write a diss song about him?

The second is the team around James, which I thought and still think is weaker than what the Nets have to offer. However, management did step up and brought in Mo Williams, who gelled perfectly with the LeBron on his way to becoming an All-Star.

I do not remember that well if Michael Jordan went through any of this switching teams speculation, but I highly doubt it was anything like this. Chicago, although a bigger market than Cleveland was still not New York.

Did any team actually think they could have lured Jordan away from Chicago? Did any team look two seasons ahead in order to free up cap room to offer the max contract for Jordan?

Jordan built Chicago and made it a basketball city just like LeBron is doing currently with Cleveland. James does not have to leave Cleveland for a bigger market because he is already making Cleveland a bigger market.

So, please, Nets management and Nets fans stop dreaming of LeBron in a Brooklyn uniform, it’s not going to happen. Focus on the now and a player who we actually have a chance to sign.

The nucleus is there. The roster, with Devin Harris and Brook Lopez seems to becoming more and more attractive with each passing game.

We will have a good, if not great team in a few short years, it is just not going to include "King" James.

New Jersey Nets' Offseason Scenarios

With two games remaining in the season, questions are being asked about the New Jersey Nets' offseason. It will be their second straight trip to the lottery, and if the current standings stay the way they are, the Nets are projected to pick 10th.

All they did with the 10th pick last year was have future All-Star center Brook Lopez fall into their laps.

Everything seemed to go right for the Nets last draft. They were able to get the aforementioned Lopez, who will be a major part of the their future, Ryan Anderson, an all-around scrapper, and Chris Douglas-Roberts, who showed flashes of his strong yet unorthodox offensive style of play.

All three look to at least be contributors. Not many teams can claim three successful picks in the same draft.

This year the Nets will only have one pick and they need to make it work. They need rebounding and defensive presence. What they really need is Blake Griffin—he would fit in perfectly.

There is a problem, though. Griffin is undoubtedly going No. 1 overall, no matter which team drafts first. But hey, New Jersey may actually get really lucky and win the lottery just like the Chicago Bulls did last year. One can dream, right?

The more likely scenario will have the Nets trying desperately to move up, offering packages of young players, coupled with expiring contracts, and their pick.

This move could work with a team that does not need Griffin’s services because they are already loaded at the forward position.

If the Nets are able to get the prized power forward and couple him with Brook, they would be set in the frontcourt for years to come.

Combine them with Devin Harris, Douglas-Roberts, and Vince Carter, and we may be looking at a dangerous team.

Looking past the draft, Nets beat writer Al Iannazzone pointed out that team owner Bruce Ratner and his investors lost $27.8 million for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31. That figure includes the Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn.

Knowing this, New Jersey is probably not going to look to add high-priced players, especially after missing out on that playoff money.

New Jersey’s financial losses give them only one shot at getting the rebounding/defensive presence they need, if not through the draft, and that is through a trade.

The Nets do have younger talent and expiring contracts to probably get someone to meet their needs, but will this be the way to go?

Would the Nets be better off continuing trying to develop Sean Williams, Josh Boone, Yi Jianlian, or Anderson? I’m not so sure. Each of these players have shown flashes, but each have also been inconsistent.

Do these players just need more time? I don’t know the answer. But if any of these players are used in a trade, it will be a clear sign that the organization has given up on them and an admittance that they made a mistake.

It is all up to the brain trust of Rod Thorn and Kiki Vandeweghe. They have a lot to do and only a little to do it with. They succeeded last offseason, but can they do it again?

Nets-Bulls: N.J. Can't Run with Playoff-Bound Chicago

The Nets hung tough for the most part against the Playoff-bound Chicago Bulls on Sunday. But the latter is playing so tough that they may even take over the seventh spot by the end of the day if the fading Detroit Pistons come up with a loss.

Saturday afternoon's was a strange game, and the Nets never held a lead until very late in the fourth quarter. They did, however, find a way to fight back behind strong performances from Brook Lopez, Keyon Dooling, Ryan Anderson, and Jarvis Hayes. Chris Douglas-Roberts also provided a spark off the bench.

Devin Harris also played well, scoring 14 points, dishing out five assists, pulling down eight rebounds, and coming up with three steals.

Though he seemed to have a good game going, Nets coach Lawrence Frank sat him most of the fourth quarter. Let's just say that when the camera showed Devin's expression on the bench, he wasn't all smiles.

But the real problem for New Jersey was Vince Carter’s performance (or lack thereof). He seemed lackadaisical and indifferent, practically absent entirely, as he finished the game on the bench after going two-for-ten on the day. Four of his ten attempts were taken from behind the three-point line, and he missed all of those.

The turning point of the game came when Harris committed a flagrant foul on Bulls guard John Salmons during a breakaway late in the fourth. The call was questionable, and Harris was not head hunting; he just wrapped him a bit high. Regardless, that was the game.

Even with the loss, the Nets can walk away slightly satisfied (except for ole "Vinsanity," that is). It was the rookies who looked to be the leaders of the team today. If Brook Lopez, Ryan Anderson, and Chris Douglas-Roberts are the future of this team, then it is a bright one.

Assuming they stay on this track, imagine what they are going to gain with experience.

Just a few side notes: Ryan Anderson should be the starter. The Yi Jianlian experiment looks like a failure.

Is there really any doubt that both Lawrence Frank, with his head scratching decision making, and Vince Carter, with his disappearing act, should be gone during the offseason?

Regarding the Bulls, they're going to be good. They are scary deep and could make some noise in the Playoffs this year (and if not, definitely in 2010).

And finally, is there any argument as to who has the worst tattoos in the NBA? It's Brad Miller.

With Fewer Than 10 Games Remaining, Nets Want To Finish Strong

Ahh, the New Jersey Nets season. Well, it started out well, at least, right?

I mean they were in the playoff hunt for more than half of the season, but then the ridiculous losses to sub-par teams and a lack of effort began to show up.

Add that to the injuries, and the Nets find themselves with a 31-44 record with no shot at the eighth seed in the playoffs, which was once theirs for the taking.

But it’s all fine and dandy. The team vows to go out strong in hopes of saving their coach’s job.

When Nets beat writer Dave D’Alessandro caught up with team leader Vince Carter, he had this to say: “The only thing we can do as players is compete harder than we ever did before. Maybe then we can change some minds.”

Hmm, couldn’t they have changed some minds by playing hard all season?

It truly is frustrating to see the potential the team showed in the beginning of the year to see now what they have become.

Keep in mind this team is solid. They have an All-Star guard in Devin Harris, a more than adequate starting center in Brook Lopez, and Vince Carter along with a decent bench filled with Keyon Dooling, Jarvis Hayes, Trenton Hassel, and Ryan Anderson.

Was I being too optimistic as a Nets fan? Was my vision clouded? I don’t know. But right now it looks like it might be the time to get rid of head coach Lawrence Frank.

I know, I know, Frank is a great X’s and O’s guy, he supposedly comes up with great game plans, he is always so prepared, and blah, blah, blah.

If he is all these things then why doesn’t it translate on the court?

Frank’s players obviously seem to be tuning him in and out, putting up great efforts one night and then sleepwalking through the next.

How can a team win with a coach like this?

I liken Frank to a fat person trying to tell a skinny person what he should and should not eat. I mean, would said skinny person actually take instructions from said fat person? I think not.

This is similar to the Frank situation. Frank is not and never was an athlete. He never played basketball at a collegiate level and definitely not at a professional level.

Could this possibly be a reason why these players tune out Frank’s instructions?

I keep wondering if the question of “What does he know anyway?” is always in the back of each player's mind.

Is it possible for a coach in any sport to take a team to an elite level given the coach never played the game at any kind of an elite level?

The coach does not have to be a star, but should at least have some credible experience, right? Doesn’t the actual experience of playing the game count?

Sure, Lawrence Frank may know what to do in a given situation after the fact, after looking from afar, but his knowledge is somewhat stymied due to the fact that he never really actually experienced what he is preaching.

His lack of experience changes everything.

It is time for a new voice. Frank has run his course in New Jersey, and it is time for a different approach.

Here’s an idea: Bring back Eddie Jordan and keep Frank on the staff, as long as he will accept a lesser role. It is not like Frank really has options if and when he finally gets fired.

New Jersey Nets: Time to Move Forward

With the trade deadline coming up February 20, the New Jersey Nets are looking to make a move. Due to the lack of production at small forward, president Rod Thorn and GM Kiki Vandeweghe are exploring the possibilities of an upgrade.

Reports have the Nets discussing a deal with the Chicago Bulls that would bring malcontent, bad-locker-room guy Larry Hughes. While Larry Hughes is not a small forward, he would take over Vince Carter’s two-guard spot, in turn moving Carter to small forward.

While this move may improve the situation on the court, there is a good chance that it will ultimately not work.

There is no doubt that Hughes has the talent and big shot-making ability the Nets need; however, he seems to have problems everywhere he goes. Hughes could not get anything done in his Washington days when he was with Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison, nor could he get anything done in his Cavs’ days with LeBron James.

In fact, Hughes seemed to welcome a trade to get away from a winning team with LeBron to go to a subpar Chicago Bulls team. Now Hughes wants out of Chicago.

Another target is the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Mike Miller. The Nets pursued Miller before, as recently as the latest offseason.

Miller could be a very nice fit. He can definitely shoot and slash. Miller’s game translates into the Nets’ current offensive system very well.

There is only one problem, Miller does not play defense. This would not be such a big problem if Carter, Devin Harris, Yi Jianlian, or Ryan Anderson played D. The only one in the starting lineup who plays defense on a consistent basis, or at least tries, is rookie Brook Lopez.

The ultimate prize for New Jersey would be Washington Wizard Caron Butler. Butler can do it all. He has a nice mid-range game, can shoot the three when needed, can drive to the basket, and can play defense. He also brings toughness to a Nets’ starting lineup that really has none.

The only “tough” player the Nets have is Eduardo Najera. Najera lacks an offensive game and most of the time cannot back up his tough talk with his game. Butler can.

Imagine a starting lineup of Harris, Carter, Butler, Yi, and Lopez? Sounds pretty good? Doesn’t it? Well, that is if Yi can stay healthy and continue to show what he did in the four-game span before he broke a finger.

Now, I know the Nets’ plans about the summer of LeBron and their Brooklyn dream in 2010.

That being said, New Jersey really should swing for the fences and give Washington what they want for Butler. Give them Anderson, give them Chris Douglas-Roberts, give them draft picks, give them cap relief. Just don’t give up Lopez or Harris or Yi, other than these three, who are the future, who is untouchable?

Even with all the cap space in the world, nobody really wants to come to New Jersey to play as long as the home games are at the IZOD. Trades are the only way the Nets are going to get All-Stars still in their prime.

While they have the pieces, they should think now and not 2010 if and when they are playing somewhere else.

Devin Harris: The East's 10th Best Guard

After looking at the first returns for the NBA All-Star voting and seeing Devin Harris in 10th place among East guards, I suddenly felt like I was on the Saturday Night Live Weekend Update set in the middle of Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers’s Really? bit.

Devin Harris, 10th place? Really?

Luke Ridnour ahead of him? Really?

Jameer Nelson ahead of him? Really?

Jose Calderon, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Vince Carter, Derrick Rose, and Joe Johnson? Really?

The only guard that truly deserves more votes than Harris is Dwyane Wade.

Am I the only one who just doesn’t get this whole love obsession with Calderon? He’s good, but I just don’t see him as good as Harris right now.

Are fans just voting automatically for names like Iverson, Carter, and Ray Allen just because they recognize their names? When does their shelf life end? Does anybody really think that these three players are having comparable seasons to Harris’s.

Are fans uninformed of Harris? If these voters watch any of the NBA’s highlights from this season, I find that hard to believe. Harris has been breaking ankles and making defenders just look foolish all season.

He arguably has the quickest first step in the association. He outruns everyone on the break and is able to take contact and finish even with his slight frame. He has also added a step back jumper, which one is bound to see at least five times every time they watch a Nets game, and a decent three-point shot to keep defenses honest.

The changes to Harris’s game, along with the free reign he has been given in New Jersey that he was not getting in Dallas under the controlling Avery Johnson, has transformed Harris into the league’s fourth leading scorer at 24.8 points per game.

Harris, who seems always to be in attack mode, is also averaging 10.9 free throw attempts per game, second only to Dwight Howard.

His scoring average also goes up on the road, a stat that makes him the league leader in scoring on the road.

Harris’s outstanding play has led the rebuilding Nets to a 11-9 record, good for second place in the Atlantic division and sixth in the Eastern Conference. This was a start that nobody saw coming.

All of these accomplishments and why no love? Well, he does play in New Jersey and he doesn’t have a country to support him like his teammate Yi Jianlian has. Yi currently ranks third amongst East forwards and has more than three times the amount of votes as Harris.

Thank God the coaches will be able to vote Harris on to the All-Star team when the time comes. With the way Harris is playing now, he should change his name to Devine Harris…was that too much?

Could New Jersey Nets' Surplus of Bigs Lead to a Trade?

It is clear by now that the New Jersey Nets have exceeded the expectations of the “so-called expert” NBA analysts.

Before the season, the Nets were predicted by ESPN, along with others, to finish last in the East with a record of 28-54. Their own beat writers believed the team will have trouble breaking 80 points in games.

Something funny happened since then. On their way to an 11-8 record with wins over Utah, Phoenix and Atlanta twice, Devin Harris has broke out into stardom in Lawrence Frank’s dribble-drive offense, which utilizes his quickness and ability to break down opposing defenses.

Vince Carter has grown into the leader that no one thought he could be. Brook Lopez looks to be the presence down low that they have been missing since Kenyon Martin’s departure.

And the bench is productive for the first time in years thanks to the off season acquisitions of Jarvis Hayes and Keyon Dooling. First-round draft pick Ryan Anderson also has provided a spark off the bench with his three-point shooting.

This team appears to have great chemistry. They all seam to sacrifice for the greater good of the team. While Harris and Carter are always the stars of each game, there always seems to be that third guy who steps up and makes a major contribution.

That third guy can be anyone. Some nights it’s Yi, some nights Lopez, other nights Dooling, other nights, Hayes. One can go through their whole lineup.

At this point in the season, Frank has appeared to give everyone their fair shot in the endless rotation. Brook Lopez has capitalized on his time starting at center due to an injured Josh Boone and appears to have earned the rights to the spot.

Sean Williams, who was also given minutes, proved to be unproductive, he does remain however, the main cheerleader and seems to provide energy even when not playing.

Stromile Swift, due to Williams failures looks to have earned minutes. Eduardo Najera will probably get playing time once he comes back from injury simply because he is a veteran and has a defensive presence even though he lacks any sort of offensive game. Frank loves these kinds of players, see Jason Collins.

With Boone ready to come back from injury, and Najera coming back soon, it leaves a logjam of bigs. Who will Frank take minutes from? Even leaving Williams on the bench, the Nets have a stock of bigs that includes Lopez, Yi, Anderson, Boone, Swift, and Najera.

After looking at this situation, one has to wonder if they can possibly gain an advantage by trading away one of their bigs for that third point guard they are missing. Could this happen without messing up the team’s chemistry?

In mid-November, Nets beat writer, Al Iannazzone reported that the Warriors offered Italian guard Marco Belinelli for Williams or Boone. The Nets turned the deal down at the time because of health issues concerning their bigs.

Belinelli is a shooter who can handle the ball and would appear to fit right in. He would also help with the big-man surplus and would fill New Jersey’s shortage of ball handlers problem. At this point, they only have Harris, Carter sometimes, and Dooling.

If Rod Thorn is able to pull the trigger on this deal it could possibly add to his already successful rebuilding of the Nets.

Can Chad Pennington End the Pretending Jets?

Losing to the San Fransisco 49ers on Sunday just may have ended the Jets playoff hopes. The final knockout punch could come from cut quarterback Chad Pennington and his surprising Miami Dolphins in the final game of the regular season.

What happened to this Jets team after beating the previously undefeated Tennessee Titans? Did they start to believe in their own hype? Did they think they were the team to beat in the AFC as many experts touted them? Or were they just a pretender and not contender all along?

Looking back at their schedule it is hard to find any quality wins except for their two most recent over the Titans and Patriots. In the first week they narrowly beat the Dolphins. Then they followed their 1-0 start off with a loss to the Patriots, which was a game where Matt Cassel made his first start since high school, then they got trounced by the Chargers in San Diego.

In week four, the Jets had a coming out party against the now playoff-bound Arizona Cardinals before heading into their bye. During the next five games, the Jets racked up wins against the lowly Bengals and Rams, narrowly defeated the Chiefs, lost to the 3-10 Raiders, and beat the free falling Bills.

The Jets went on to beat the Patriots and the Titans to capture first place, alone, in the AFC East and looked clearly on their way to winning the division and into the playoffs.

Since then, the Jets look like a different team. In their loss to the Broncos, their rush defense, which had been solid all season, seemed non existent. In San Fransisco, the Jets offense was out if sync, and only managed 182 total yards with Favre completing one pass each to Coles and Cotchery, his two primary targets.

Losses against Denver and the 49ers have left the Jets in their current position, a three way tie atop the AFC East with the Dolphins and Patriots. It looks like the Jets are going to have to win their division in order to get into the playoffs due to the surging Colts and Ravens.

The Jets next two games should be winnable, although no one really knows what games are winnable with them. First up is Buffalo at home, a game the Jets should be able to get up for if they have any pride left. Then it is off to Seattle to meet the struggling Seahawks. After these two games, which should produce two victories, they play Miami in their season finale at home.

The Miami game can very well be a battle for the AFC East crown and a ticket to the playoffs. In that meeting, good old Chad Pennington will be back with the possibility of knocking the Jets out of the playoffs, retiring the great Brett Favre and leaving New York with no quarterback for the future. And no, Kellen Clemens is not the future.

With one win, Chad Pennington can end the team that tried to end him.

Up-and-Coming New Jersey Nets Will Be Landing Spot for LeBron James

If only the Nets showed up for the third quarter on Tuesday night against the Cavs. They did, however, showcase their young talent for LeBron James. The Nets' supporting cast will be younger and better when James becomes a free agent in 2010.

Unless the Cavs make that big move to get LeBron a sidekick or two, James will have no choice but to bolt Cleveland, even if he wins a championship with the team this year. Just how much longer is his current staff going to be productive after this year?

Ben Wallace is running on fumes, Zydrunas Ilgauskas cannot have that much more in him after being in the league and playing professionally as long as he has. Wally Szczerbiak will probably not be re-signed, Anderson Varejao is a straight energy player off the bench and not much more. That would leave the King with Delonte West, Mo Williams, Daniel Gibson, and Sasha Pavlovic.

The roster that LeBron will be looking at come decision time on the Nets side would be speedy guard Devin Harris, up-and-coming center Brook Lopez, who looks better with every start, sharp-shooter Ryan Anderson, and the steal of the draft, Chris Douglas-Roberts. He will also have energy off the bench provided by Sean Williams and Yi Jianlian, who has all the potential in the world, along with the marketing value of China.

The New Jersey Nets are only going to get better with experience. Lopez, Anderson, and Douglas-Roberts are all rookies, and Harris is coming into his own, as shown by his three straight 30-point games after getting the freedom to play his style, which was not given to him in Dallas.

As for tonight, Vince Carter had an off-night, only scoring 12, Harris was a little off his game, scoring 23, compared to what he did in the two previous games against Atlanta. Lopez finished with a strong game in only his third start with 15 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out. Anderson never really seemed to be in the game and Yi took another night off as he continues his string of on nights, off nights.

Like all young players coming into the league the young Nets are going through consistency problems. All this being said, the young, inexperienced Nets showed LeBron what they are capable of when they went into halftime with a three point lead.

While New Jersey may not be a playoff team this year they will be close and definitely will be one next season barring major injuries. The Cavs are built for right now, the Nets are a team built for the very near future right about when LeBron becomes a free agent to be the missing piece to a dynasty.

Brett Favre Gives a List of Demands If He Is To Retire

Twenty million is a lot of money to stay retired. This is the amount that was supposedly offered to Brett Favre by Packers’ President Mark Murphy to do just that. ESPN reports that Favre is considering the offer.

My contacts in Green Bay said that the two sides were close to coming to a monetary agreement that would work out well for both parties involved. However, after leaving the meeting in which Favre received the offer, Brett came back and countered with what he called, a little list of demands.

No word if any of the demands will be met, but the $20 million offer was raised to $25 million.

I was able to get that list of demands, don’t ask me how, I am sworn to secrecy. Here is the list, read by Favre’s agent Buss Cook:

1. Brett wants the name of Lambeau Field changed to Favre Field, "The House that Brett Built."

2. Cheeseheads will now be known as Favreheads.

3. Just like when they put a player’s number with a decal on the back of player’s helmets to honor that said player, Brett would like his No. 4 on each Packers’ player’s helmet. Except, instead of having the No. 4 on the back of the helmet, he would like it on the right side of each helmet, you would have to take away one of the “G's” obviously.

4. When entering the stadium, every fan will be given a Brett Favre jersey and a pair of Wrangler jeans. It will be mandatory for each fan to wear this ensemble at every home game.

5. John Madden must be the new commentator at every Packer game. Also, there must be no less than 10 references to the great Brett Favre and the childlike joy he brings to the game.

6. Brett would like his Packer-issued cell phone back, as well as a new Packer-issued 20,000 square-foot vacation home in Hawaii, a Packer-issued Ford F-150, and a Packer-issued mistress.

7. If a Packer scores a touchdown, which will obviously be very rare because Brett won’t be throwing the ball, the word touchdown will be replaced with the word Favredown. Instead of yelling “touchdown,” from now on you will yell Favredown.

8. Two "His" and "Hers" John Deere tractors fully loaded with beer refrigerators stocked with Miller Lite.

9. Brett would never have to pay for anything at all in the state of Wisconsin.

10. Any of Brett Favre's records that are broken will have an asterisk next to them. This is because Brett can obviously still play for at least five more years. Just imagine what Brett can add on to his numbers in that amount of time?

11. Finally, Brett would like to have at least a 20-year grace period on this list, you know, just in case he changes his mind on any of his requests.

If these demands are met, Brett will strongly consider retirement, for real this time.

Top 10 Most Unwearable Jerseys

Ahh, jerseys. Every sports fan has to have at least one of their favorite player’s jersey. Some girls get them just because they like the color. Others get them to be funny, or retro. Others just get them because they are on sale.

After getting a Vilma, Kidd, K-Mart, and Jefferson jersey, I gave up. All of them were traded and now I just feel like an idiot.

One has to realize that there are consequences when buying jerseys. Be it murder trials, scandals, boneheaded plays, or trades. Anyway, before someone purchases a jersey in some bargain bin, make sure none of the following names are on the back.

10. Any WNBA jersey (just wanted to get that out of the way first). Meaning a guy wearing a WNBA jersey.

9. Brett Favre/Manny Ramirez - I retire, no wait, I want to play, no wait, I retire, no...when will this story end? Favre has become such a problem in Green Bay that he was recently offered $25 million just to stay away.

I don't think a Red Sox Ramirez jersey is all that popular right now considering he was basically giving up on the team with his lack of hustle and antics. I guess Manny is going to be Manny in L.A., at least until one of the two parties involved grows tired of the other.

This spot was originally for a Randall Gay jersey, sorry if I offended anybody.

8. Bill Buckner - Even after the Sox broke the curse and have won two World Series in the last few years, has anybody really forgiven Buckner in Boston? I don’t think I would take the chance of sporting a Buckner jersey anywhere around the Boston area.

7. Leon Lett - Although he was a two-time Pro Bowler and part of the Dallas Cowboys' three Super Bowl victories in the ‘90s, he will probably be remembered for two real stupid/hilarious plays.

The first play coming in Super Bowl XXVII. Lett recovered a fumble on the 45-yard line and was running it back for a clear touchdown, at around the 10, Leon outstretched his arm with the ball. Not seeing a hustling Don Beebe, the ball was stripped and knocked out of the end zone, which resulted in a touchback. Granted, the play had no effect on the game at all, it must have been really embarrassing for Cowboy’s nation.

The second play came on a Thanksgiving Day game in ’93. With the Cowboys leading the Dolphins 14-13 in the closing seconds, Miami attempted a field goal. During the game, there was a rare snowstorm in Dallas which covered the field. Anyway, the Cowboys wound up blocking the kick.

While his teammates made a circle around the ball and started celebrating, Lett broke through to recover the ball. I don’t know if he even knows what he was thinking, but he slipped on the ice when trying to get it. The Dolphins recovered the ball on the one-yard line. Miami wound up winning the game.

Come to think of it, maybe I would wear his jersey; it would be a conversation starter.

6. Jose Canseco - Do I really have to explain why? Maybe I would wear his twin brother's, Ozzie, jersey, now he was something special.

5. Rae Carruth - He was a first-team All-American wide receiver out of Colorado who was the 27th overall pick by the Carolina Panthers in 1997. In his rookie year, Carruth led all rookie receivers in receptions and receiving touchdowns. He showed a lot of promise. It all came to an end in 1999, when he conspired to commit murder. The victim was Carruth’s girlfriend who was pregnant with his twins at the time. He’s still in jail.

Wearing his jersey would be, let’s say in bad taste? Carruth’s number? 89. I guess it wasn’t the number; Steve Smith seems to be alright with it, unless he conspired in the elimination of running back Stephen Davis. Is it just me, or did he disappear very quickly?

4. Gheorge Muresan - The tallest player ever to play in the NBA. His number was 77, which was in reference to his 7'7" frame. He was named Most Improved Player in the 1995-96 season when he put up solid numbers, averaging 14.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks. He also gave a riveting performance co-starring with Billy Crystal in the movie My Giant where he played a big guy.

Did anybody ever sport a Muresan jersey? There had to have been, I think I remember them in the stands in his Washington Bullets days. As for me? I don’t like anybody over seven feet.

3. Michael Vick - I originally had Aaron Rodgers up here, which was way too high. Wearing a Vick jersey can actually cause fights, and quick. Vick redefined the quarterback position and brought dog fighting into the national spotlight. Steer clear from PETA, dog groomers, doggie parks, etc. Remember, in society today, people killing a dog is worse than killing a person. I'm sure he's still breaking ankles, only this time it's during flag football games in the prison yard.

2. Scott Norwood - "No Good! Wide right!" With Norwood’s 47-yard field goal miss, the Giants won Super Bowl XXV. Although he was the Bills all-time leading scorer, he will always be remembered for that kick. I might try to get a Ray Finkle jersey though. Finkle was the kicker based on Norwood in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, for those of you who didn’t get the reference. If only the laces were out, Norwood could be a Buffalo hero.

1. O.J. Simpson - Although the Juice is loose, his jersey isn’t. Pretty funny that his jersey has spent more time locked up than him. That is, until he finally catches the true killers. Then I can finally dust the magnificent shirt off, it just looks weird in my closet. I just can’t get rid of it; he is a former Heisman winner.

That’s the list, I’m sure I left plenty off, such as Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmiero, Maurice Clarrett, etc. Who else deserves to be up here? Everyone, Sound off.

New Jersey Nets: What Will Become of Sean Williams?

Just what will become of Sean Williams? Will he progress steadily and become the next Josh Smith? Or will he never live up to his full potential, showing flashes every few games in the mold of Stromile Swift?

After becoming the nation’s top shot blocker in college in his junior year, where he blocked 75 shots in just 15 games, Williams was dismissed from the Boston College basketball team due to his second suspension in his three year career. As seen by many draft experts as a lottery talent, he fell to No. 17 because of his character issues.

The New Jersey Nets jumped at the chance to take him, thinking they finally have found the defensive presence they have been lacking ever since trading away Kenyon Martin in 2003-’04.

Williams is blessed with the athleticism that most people dream of. At 6’10” and 235 lbs., with a wing span of 7’5”, he is able to run the floor, has tremendous leaping ability, and is a decent free throw shooter.

Despite having all the physical tools, questions arise when talking about Williams' focus and commitment. He seems to take plays off and his head just doesn’t seem to be in the game all of the time. If only he and Kevin Garnett can get together for a brain transplant.

Williams' first year with the Nets was filled with ups and downs. Due to injuries, he had his chance to start pretty early in the season. He was getting decent minutes from the start of the season, although they were a bit sporadic. What else would one suspect from Coach Lawrence Frank anyway due to his prior reluctance to play newcomers. During one six-game stretch in late February, early March, Williams' mpg were as follows: 5, 2, 6, 1, 7, 4. This was clearly low point.

Williams had his high scoring game against Miami in mid February with 22 and blocked eight shots in a game against Sacramento in late December. In seven games, he blocked four or more shots, showing flashes of an elite shot blocker. His total stats for the 2007-'08 season were: 29 games started, 17.5 mpg, 5.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg and 1.5 bpg.

OK, but with a new season comes experience, right? Maybe Williams has his head in the right place, and is ready to commit.

Then I read this quote from Coach Frank, “Sean took a week off last week,” Frank said. “You can see it. He’s going to have to continue to work and get in game rhythm. Some of these other guys have been working out the whole month.”

This is not what I want to hear about Sean. I was hoping to read quotes saying how hard he is working, how he added to his weak offensive game. How he developed a steady jump shot in the offseason and has really worked on defensive positioning to grab more rebounds.

Hopefully his lackluster effort does not continue. With the addition of three new big men in Yi, Lopez, and Anderson along with holdovers Swift, and Boone, Williams is going to have to fight for minutes. He is going to really have to stand out. As it looks right now, he is standing out in the wrong way.

Given his talent, can Williams develop into a player like Josh Smith? Will he even get the same opportunity?

In Smith’s rookie year he started in 59 games, second year, 73 games, third year, 72, and this year, 81. Smith’s minutes increased each year along with his point, rebound, blocks, and steal totals. Well, to be completely accurate, between his third and fourth year, his rebounding and block totals dipped very slightly.

Each season it seems like Smith has added to his offensive game, which like Williams’, primarily consisted of dunks and alley-oops. The Hawks gave Smith the time to develop, and he capitalized on it.

Sean Williams did not have such a luxury as Smith did in his rookie season. The Nets were a team built to win now and were pushing for the playoffs. Because of this makeup, Williams was on a short leash and was not given the chance to work through his mistakes.

With the off season that a roster overhaul, New Jersey is now a completely different team, they are a team built for the future. Consisting mainly of very young, inexperienced players, it looks as if Williams shows his hard work in practice and consistency during games, he should be able to work his way into the starting lineup, for the whole season.

All the physical tools are clearly there but one has to wonder if Williams can make the mental leap to bring his game together.

Williams does not need to look far to see what he could become if he does not put his mental and physical game together. Teammate Stromile Swift, who came very close to being taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft in 2000, displayed basically the same skill set. Swift was never able to bring his game together as Smith has. He never really developed into what he was supposed to be.

Swift had a career of highlight dunks and blocks but never worked too much on his offensive game. He was never able to become a steady starter. In his eight year career, Swift has averages of 6.1 ppg, 3.6 rpg, and 1 bpg.

It looks like Sean Williams has the choice between two careers, Josh Smith’s or Stromile Swift’s.

For his sake, the Nets' sake, and mine, I hope he chooses the right one.

Please No More LeBron to New York Talk

Is anybody else as sick as me with the oversaturated coverage of LeBron’s supposedly inevitable move to one of the New York teams come 2010? It’s good to dream, but can someone please tell me when this became fact?

Was it when LeBron was spotted sporting the Yankees cap proudly during the playoff series between the Indians and Yankees?

Was it since he started flashing the Roc-a-fella signs in honor of his close friend/minority owner of the Nets, Jay-Z?

Was it when he dropped 50 points, eight rebounds and ten assists in a near triple double on the Knicks in the Garden and proclaimed yesterday, “For some reason when I get to the Garden, I always play well," James said yesterday.

"So they want me to do it for 41 games instead of two games a year.”

He added more fuel to the fire by saying his favorite city is the Big Apple and then went on to say that his favorite borough is Brooklyn.

Who has a favorite borough anyway?

"I have dreamed about playing well in this building," James said.

"To me, it has overtaken anything I have dreamed about. To get a standing ovation in the greatest basketball arena in the world is a dream come true to me. It's one of the best things that have ever happened to me."

As for the Brooklyn Nets, their new arena should be completed right around the time of James arrival. The Atlantic Yards project would feature 16 skyscrapers, thousands of apartments with the 18,000 seat arena, the Barclay’s Center, where the Nets will play as the centerpiece.

So, is it right that the Nets are clearly making roster moves due to a player’s free agency two years down the line?

Look, being a Nets fan, I really did not care that much about finally trading away Kidd.

Yes, he brought the franchise to relevance bringing us to two NBA finals appearances, but his constant whining, and trade requests got old. His indifference to the team last year absolutely killed their spirit and sent them into free fall mode.

In trading Kidd, the Nets got plenty in return. Expiring contracts, draft picks, and their point guard and future All-Star in Devin Harris.

Richard Jefferson never complained. He played hurt, played through the rough times. He played through Kidd and Carter’s uninspired play.

He didn’t even mention his true feelings when new ownership at the time decided to break up the team that went to two consecutive Finals. He never said anything bad about any coach.

So, in a cost-cutting move in more ways than one, which I’ll explain briefly, Jefferson was traded to the Bucks for Yi Jianlian and oft-injured Bobby Simmons, whose contract ends in 2010.

I, personally don’t think the move was all about LeBron. I believe GM Kiki Vandeweghe and head of operations Rod Thorn really see something in Yi.

Last season, Yi’s first, he averaged 8.6 points, 5.2 rebounds playing 25 minutes per game. He’s young, can run the floor, and can shoot it mid-range and from the three-point line pretty well.

Yi brings China with him, which, in turn brings a lot of money. Keep in mind New York has the biggest Chinese population in the U.S. There is plenty of money to be made overseas in China. Naming rights money, shoe deal money, endorsement deals, suite money for the new arena.

Because of Yi, Nets games will now be seen on 50 plus stations in China. Three hundred million Chinese play basketball and one billion watch NBA games. Some months the NBA brings in more revenue from China than it does in North America.

This move had to be done. The Nets were losing $40 million a year, the heaviest debt-to-assets load of any professional sports team, according to Forbes magazine.

Something needed to be done, especially with the shady arena financing picture for the Barclay’s Center. Richard Jefferson served as the sacrificial lamb in this situation.

Look, it’s all well and good to dream of LeBron’s arrival, but what happens if he doesn’t come? What happens if the Cavs make the right move, bringing LeBron a sidekick to help lead them to the promised land? Is LeBron going to leave a championship team?

Who says LeBron can’t make tons of money and become a global icon in Cleveland? Hasn't he done so already?

As for now, I’m looking at the present, not two years down the line. If the Nets do wind up getting LeBron it would be great. If they don’t, I like the roster and the direction they are headed.

A lot can happen in two years. That being said, a lot can happen in one year, Lakers-Celtics finals? Who thought that was even possible after last season?

Lakers-Celtics Finals: Believe the Hype

Lakers-Celtics Finals. Doesn't that just sound good?

David Stern and Co. got exactly what they wanted, a dream matchup between the league's two most storied franchises. Not to mention the NBA's only legitimate Eastern-Western conference rivalry.

The hype machine is out in full force, as it should be. What other finals matchup has any sort of history even vaguely resembling Lakers-Celtics?

The Lakers and Celtics have met in the finals ten times before. Four of those series ended in seven games. The Celtics came out on top eight of ten times. The Lakers took the last two, in '84-'85, and '86-'87.

Overall, the Celtics have won 16 titles, while the Lakers have won 14. The Lakers, however, have been much better than the Celtics in recent years. Still, the Celtics ruled the Sixties, winning a championship every year from '59 to '69, except for '67, which will never be duplicated.

I don't want to hear, "Yeah, but it's not what it used to be. There's no Larry Bird vs. Magic." Please. I bet the older people who witnessed the Celtic dominance of the Sixties were saying the exact type of garbage before their rivalry was renewed in '83-'84.

It probably went something like this: "Yeah but there's no Jerry West, no Bob Cousy or Bill Russell."

Spare me. Just embrace what we have.

We have Kobe Bryant going against the NBA's best defense. We have Kevin Garnett, who plays with the most heart in the league. We have Phil Jackson trying to pass Red Auerbach in championships.

Would you rather be watching another Spurs-Cavs matchup? How about a Pistons vs. anybody matchup?

I really do not see what can go wrong; granted, I am a neutral observer. If the Lakers win, Kobe just took his first big step in being worthy of all those Jordan comparisons. If the Celtics win, Garnett gets his much-deserved chip. Championships that have eluded such players like Karl Malone, Reggie Miller, or John Stockton.

If the Lakers win, it might be the start of a multiple-championship run. They are absolutely stacked, and will only be better in the years to come.

If Boston wins, it might be able to make it all the way back next year due to the weak East, hopefully starting a whole new era of a Lakers-Celtics rivalry.

All of you whiners should just be happy with no more Bill Engvall, and My Boys' commercials. Even though the daughter was hot, and the My Boys' girl was equally hot, it just got annoying after a while. Didn’t it?

Plus, if you are a fan of celebs, you can look forward to seeing plenty of Jack, Spiderman, Leo, and many young starlets in L.A., along with all the Laker greats.

In Boston, you’ll probably see Tom Brady (hopefully in a Yankees hat—how great would that be?) and Gisele, and Marky Mark (yes, Mark Wahlberg, you will always be Marky Mark to me). Maybe even the newly reunited New Kids on the Block will perform a halftime show.

Don’t ask me how I know they're reunited; I just do.

These finals deserve all the hype they're attracting; remember, this is the only finals matchup that warrants it. It's actually a finals matchup that actually matters.

Mike D'Antoni and Toronto: The Perfect Fit

While rumors swirl around D'Antoni's coaching status in Phoenix there is a team up north that former Suns GM, Bryan Colangelo has been putting together very similar to that of the old high powered Phoenix style.

When Colangelo left Phoenix for Toronto in 2006, he must have seen the writing on the wall, he quickly started to overhaul the Raptors' roster with the idea of going uptempo while incorporating international players.

To do this, Colangelo hired Italian League general manager Maurizio Gherardini, he traded Charlie Villanueva for speedy point guard T.J. Ford, and with the number 1 pick in the draft he selected Italian star, Andrea Bargnani. He also signed European stars, Jorge Garbajosa, and Anthony Parker.

Colangelo's overhaul was effective, T.J. Ford averaged 14 points and 7.9 assists, while Bargnani averaged 11.6 points and was second in Rookie of the Year voting. Parker showed his shooting touch while averaging 12.4 points, and Garbajosa, who has since been injured, averaged 8.5 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Toronto, as a team, had a 20-game turnaround on the way to their first Atlantic Division crown, and their first playoff berth in five years.

Since then, Colangelo has continued his success. He signed deadly shooter Jason Kapono, high flying big man, Jamario Moon, and another point guard who could shoot the three while racking up assists in Jose Calderon.

The team, however has since underachieved and looks like a coaching change might be needed for the roster to play up to its potential, and to implement Colangelo's uptempo dream.

The answer to Toronto's prayers....D'Antoni.

Sure Toronto already has a coach in Sam Mitchell, the man who won Coach of the Year just last season, but what does that mean? Coaches of the Year always get fired, and usually sooner rather than later these days.....Avery Johnson, soon to be whatever, D'Antoni.

In the 2005-06 season, D'Antoni's first and arguably his best year with the Suns he worked with an eight man rotation of Nash, Amare, Joe Johnson, Marion, Quentin Richardson, Barbosa, Jimmy Jackson, and Steven Hunter.

If Toronto can get D'Antoni, they can give him a roster to work with that can be quite similar to the above.

The 2008-09 eight man rotation for the Raptors with D'Antoni behind the bench could look something like this; Calderon at the point, who was fifth in the league in assists while only playing 30 mpg, Bosh, Parker, Moon, Kapono, Ford, Bargnani, and Delfino.

Calderon would take on the Nash role, Bosh the Amare role, Parker the Richardson role, Moon for Marion, Kapono for Johnson. Ford would play the Barbosa role, and Delfino the Jimmy Jackson role. As for Bargnani, this is a weapon D'Antoni did not have in Phoenix, I am sure he could find a place for a big who can run the floor, and shoot the three.

If this marriage between Colangelo and D'Antoni does happen again, they might be able to finish what they started back in Phoenix.

Vlade Divac Flopping Academy: Endorsed by 4-Time Champion Spurs

"You know, a lot of people ask me, how do we do it? Four championships in nine years? Not everyone realizes that our team goes through a rigorous off season program where we are able to perfect the flop," said Spurs Coach Greg Popovich.

The rigorous program Popovich talks about takes place at the Vlade Divac Flopping Academy.

Vlade Divac, former NBA All Star, who is credited by many as being the best flopper ever, opened the Academy in the summer of 2000, shortly before the Spurs second championship.

"Everybody wants an edge these days. Just imagine the advantage of flopping. Who wouldn't rather shoot from the free throw line, who wouldn't want the other team's best player fouling out," said Vlade Divac.

"Vlade's techniques are the best, being a foreign player I was taught flopping at a young age but nothing like this. If you want to raise your flopping to a new level, there is nowhere to go but here," said Manu Ginobili.

If anybody has ever watched a Spurs playoff series, it is obvious to see that flopping can change a game. Whether its Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Ginobili, Bowen, or any other Spur, they all know how to throw their bodies around with even the slightest bit of contact.

After four championships in nine years who can argue with success?

"I feel that I can honestly say that without the help of the Vlade Divac Academy, those four championships would not have been possible."

The Vlade Divac Academy opens classes in June and is now accepting applications.

It is a can't miss opportunity according to Duncan, "Just go, you won't regret it."

Phoenix Suns: The Beginning of the End

While the Phoenix Suns avoided a sweep on Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs, it only delayed the Suns’ bleak future for the series and for the franchise.

Sure, it was a nice win, with a near triple-double from Boris Diaw, who seems to have one good game in every five. Shaquille O’Neal played well scoring 14 and grabbing 12 rebounds. Raja Bell maybe played his best playoff game exploding in the first half for 21 on his way to a game-high 27.

The usual leaders, Nash only managed four assists and Amare Stoudemire only scored seven which seems crazy when you realize the Suns won by 19, and led from the opening tip to the closing horn.

Phoenix head coach Mike D'Antoni's defensive switch that had Diaw guarding Tony Parker worked out very well as Parker was held to just 14 after coming off 41 in Game three. O’Neal held Duncan to 6-18 shooting while Raja allowed Manu Ginobili to just 10 points.

Recognizing the loss, Spurs coach, Gregg Popovich took his three stars, Parker, Ginobili, and Duncan out for basically the entire fourth quarter. As the Spurs B-team played on the Big Three were on the bench laughing it up.

Does anybody really believe, besides irrational Suns fans, think that the Spurs have any shot at blowing this series with two games left to play in San Antonio? Add that to the fact that the Suns would have to win four in a row.

The Suns defensive effort was great, but had Diaw ever played well for two games straight? For the Suns to have a chance he would have to play like he did in Game four for four straight games.

This simply will not happen.

Popovich will make the necessary adjustments that he always seems to make in order to win just like he did in Games one, two, three, and in leading the Spurs to four Championships in seven years.

So what happens to the Suns after they lose the series? Where do they go from there?

When Steve Kerr made the trade to bring in Shaq, Kerr was widely criticized but it was a move that had to be made. Shawn Marion had become a major distraction to the team and simply did not want to be there.

Also, the Suns were a great high scoring regular season team whose game simply did not translate into playoff dominance.

Was the Shaq trade a complete failure? Did this trade sink the Suns ship? I do not think so.

So what is the cause? I believe a few things did the Suns in.

The first simply is Father Time, besides Stoudemire, who is 25, the starting lineup is just old. Nash is 34, often injured Grant Hill is 35, Shaq is 36, and Raja Bell is 31.

Except for Stoudemire, the rest seem to already have had their best days behind them.

Couple the above with D'Antoni's seven man rotation, his unwillingness to use his bench, and it is clear to see the Suns have no players that they developed to step in for their starters.

Lastly is how Phoenix drafted the last couple of years. Can anyone remember a successful first round pick or any draft pick for that matter they actually did not trade due to cost cutting moves after 2002, the year they drafted Stoudemire?

Since drafting Stoudemirethe Suns drafts have went like this:

2003 Drafted Zarko Cabarkapa

2004 Drafted Luol Deng then traded his rights to Chicago

2005 Traded Quentin Richardson in a deal to the Knicks and acquired second round pick Dijon Thompson

2006 Had two first round picks. With the 21st pick they selected Rajon Rondo then quickly traded his rights to Boston. With the 27th pick, they selected Sergio Rodriguez, then shipped his rights to Portland for cash.

2007 Picked Rudy Fernandez at 24 then sent his rights to Portland. Selected Alando Tucker at 29, and D.J. Strawberry in the second round, both have since not gotten off the bench.

To make their situation even worse the Suns gave up their 2008 and 2010 first round picks to the Sonics to get rid of Kurt Thomas large salary.

The Suns future just does not look good; it might be time for a new coach and to blow the team up. Now, if Phoenix somehow comes back to beat the Spurs, they will not get through the Lakers.

But was mortgaging the future worth it?
