Saints-Patriots: New Orleans Neutralizes Brady Bunch with Perfect Passer Rating

Steve Young stated earlier in pregame coverage that the New Orleans Saints needed this win more. That it would be "beyond huge, franchise making perception changing game for them." Then he went on to pick the Saints to win.

Some said the key was to keep Wes Welker from big third-down conversions while others said Laurence Maroney and the running game was a bigger threat. A few stragglers would throw Randy Moss out there as the key to containing this offense.

How about that...the Saints did all with flying colors. They held Maroney to 15 carries 64 yards rushing. As for the receiving corps, it was Moss for 3 receptions for 67 yards and Welker to 6 receptions for 32 yards.

Tedy Bruschi said "you are what your record says" at this time of the year. And he is right...the New Orleans Saints are 11-0. They have a quarterback who has a perfect passer rating of 158.3, they dominate on defense, and they capitalize on turn overs.

Not to mention the defense did it with two corner backs signed within the past two weeks. Chris McAlister was signed two weeks ago and Mike McKenzie was signed a week ago due to ongoing injuries on the defense.

Once again, the Black and Gold was ready. They minimized Maroney and neutralized Welker. As for Randy Moss, he did what he usually does when he thinks he isn't getting the ball; he let up and Darren Sharper exploited it for yet another Brady ball for his collection.

During the postgame interview, Coach Belichick said, "They outplayed us in all phases of the game."

Tom Brady even said, "There's obviously a big gap between us. It wasn't nearly as competitive as we all were expecting."

The city and its inhabitants have kept the Faith and are basking in the Glory of watching their "Saints Go Marching In!"

New Orleans Saints: Rita Benson LeBlanc's Jumping For Joy

Saints fan are very thankful this year for their team. Never in franchise history has the team gone a perfect 10-0 to start the season, for that matter only once before has the team ever had a run close to this.

During the 1991 season the team went on a 9-0 streak, but that was to finish the season and get a playoff berth. One more thing during that season, Tom Benson's granddaughter was growing even more interested in her city's team.

Now at the helm next to her granddad, Rita Benson LeBlanc is loving every minute of the team’s success as well as helping in the community she loves.

This week instead of sitting back and relaxing, she is taking part in a unique fundraiser for the Special Olympics of Louisiana. She is going to jump off of a perfectly good building!

Well actually rappel off the Best Western Landmark Hotel while participating in the "Be A S.W.A.T. Team Member For A Day" program sponsored by the Jefferson Parish Sherriff's department to benefit the SOLA.

For a small fee anyone can participate in the week long Thanksgiving or as many in the city are saying these days, Saintsgiving Week fundraiser. This event is still open to the public for a fee of $1,000.00.

For more information on this event please contact the state office at 1-800-345-6644 or log on to our website at www.laso.org .

Participnts get to rappel a 17-story building followed by a helicopter ride to then be trained in special weapons and tactics by specialist and will receive a certificate upon completion.

But before she does this on Tuesday, she first did some recon Monday for her boys in Black and Gold and resigned cornerback Mike McKenzie. Her team always comes first.

After injuries to Tracy Porter and Jabari Greer, the front office brought back someone who is familiar with both the Saints and Gregg Williams' new defensive schemes.

Once again Rita is showing why she is the face and strength of the new and improved Saints.

The New Profile Page Says It All!

To Whom It May Concern,

I would like to say...no shout...THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! The new profile page says it all. Whoever is responsible for this change is a visionary and deserves an award.

The design is eye catching. The description under the author's picture is classy. Just about any stat on said author is right there as soon as you pull up their profile. But it is the right hand side of the screen that just ROCKS!

The new ranking system is just what some ego hounds have been hoping for.

I, on the other hand adore the medals. There are so many ways to be awarded an honor, it actually reminds me of the Miss Congeniality award. The old way was good, but this is outstanding.

I may not amount to a hill of beans, but my article may be fun enough to spark a few good comments followed by follow ups and replies and voila! A bronze medal.

Whether a writer has a flash of greatness or is as consistent as a pothole in the French Quarter, there is an award for it. Heck "honorable mention" is still great, especially when there are so many intriguing writers on the site.

Be it a "Great Read" or an "Editor's Pick," there is an award for that too.

Ranking by number of articles written, comments made, and number of reads gives even a casual visitor a closer look at the author and a bit more knowledge about the Bleacher Report site.

The sky is the limit to where it can go from here. I am sure there will be those who do not agree with the change, then again their glass is probably always half empty. With any luck there will be an award for that, too!

There seems to be a few glitches, but I am sure those will be worked out in the next few days. Did anyone else become a "contributor" from "scribe" or was that just me? In case anyone is wondering: I'm going for one of those comment awards...again.

Mom and Dad always told me, "It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game." I knew it all along!

Happy writing to one and all, and to all a good night.

New Orleans Saints 9-0: Music To My Ears

Saints fans are beside themselves with the way this season is unfolding, and after seeing games from the press box to the field and everywhere in between, I am too!

Going from blackout days to this 9-0 start had been quite a journey. I think I am going to open my ears to those songs of days gone by; you know the ones that bring you right back to all the excitement. Who else remembers those days of "Cha-Ching" and "Whoomp der it is"? I do!

When the Superdome speakers played the theme song from COPS ... "Bad Boys Bad Boys whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do when they come for you" or MC Hammer's "2Legit to Quit" as we performed during pregame festivities? I remember that too.

I also remember in the 1992 season, needing to change our music last minute because our beloved boys didn't meet their away stretch with the same gusto as expected.

Do I think history will repeat itself? Not at all. Will this team lose a game before it is all said and done? Maybe.

After a lackluster win against the St. Louis Rams, I started to wonder if a loss to Tampa Bay may be in the cards.

For the answer to that question, I had to call in the professionals ... the Magic 8 Ball. The answer was ... not at this time. That makes me feel better. Back to the music...

Baja Men and "Who Let the Dogs Out" on defense, and "Back in Black" by AC/DC prior to a kickoff only to be silenced by a third quarter score followed by ... "Oh When The Saints". No, not everyone sounds like Louis Armstrong, but all do feel the excitement.

Who can forget Green Day’s “The Saints Are Coming”, or U-2's "A Beautiful Day" of the 2006 season?

It is that excitement that keeps me going until the next home game. That's when the newest bevy of songs bombards my ears once again. When I, and the hoards of Saints fans, jump out of our seats due to a turnover.

This year’s winner has been around since 2004 from the Ying Yang Twins. However, this year with this season it has caught on like wildfire, both fans and players alike just can't contain themselves when the deep bass starts to rumble...

"Crank this up, thats what we gonna do
Crank you up, me and my brother we came to get CRUNK
Crunk wont stop (nope) we keep on comin cuz
We wont quit, thats why we keep bringin it

"Tell em how we gonna call (CRUNK)
Tell em why they don't want none (CRUNK)
Tell em why they better run (CRUNK)
CRUNK CRUNK
Stand up and get crunk (CRUNK)
Stand up and get crunk (CRUNK) Here we come to get you (you better get crunk)
Here we come to get you (a little bit more crunk)
Here we come to get you (you better get crunk)
Here we come to get you (a little bit more crunk)"

All it takes is a little hip swivel or a hand bouncing in mid-air by a defensive player and the seats are vacant due to the crowd a crunkin' to "Halftime Stand Up and Get Crunk."

Now I need a fix. Where's the remote?

New Orleans Saints...Believe!

It's time to get on board the bandwagon, and there's still plenty of room! Your invitation requires only one thing...be positive.

For those who still are not sure of the ability of this year’s New Orleans Saints, I would like to remind you: Never in our history have the Saints started 8-0. That means as of right now we cannot have a losing season. Hell, for that matter, one more win means a winning record for the season.

It also means all the naysayers may actually be thankful during their Thanksgiving family get togethers. Along with all the oyster dressing and fried turkey you can eat, you may have to smile at how well this year’s team is doing.

For those on the fence who need a little extra convincing I'll give you a few facts to help. Last year's defense ranked, well not dead last, but might as well have been.

Jim Henderson, the voice of the Saints via WWL radio (and the bathroom speakers in the Superdome during all Saints games), during his weekly commentary pointed out the national media had the Saints defense ranked in the middle of the pack going into Sunday's win against the Panthers.

He also stated that we should look beyond the surface to the actual breakdown, and here is what he found:

Interceptions: No. 1
Passes defended: No. 1
Opposing passer rating: No. 1
Defensive touchdowns scored: No. 1
Completion percentage by opposing passer: No. 1
Third down percentage: No. 1
Turnover differential: No. 4
Passing yards surrendered per attempt: No. 4
Red zone defense: No. 5

Now is when I am driven to pull out..."I told you so" for any of those still not believing.

Before the season started I was considered a finalist in a nationwide contest via Bleacher Report and CBSSports.com to cover my team, yes my Saints, as a sideline reporter. Unfortunately I did not get the gig, however it did give me a place and point of reference to pull out whenever I see fit.

Case in point: On May 29, 2009 I submitted an article "Gregg Williams: Swamp Stompin'"

"At first glance many Saints fans are a bit nervous about Williams' pedigree, but not this fan. After being a first-hand witness to the "Dome Patrol" of the 1990's anchored by such players as Pat Swilling and soon to be Hall of Famer Rickey Jackson, I am convinced."

...wait I'm not done yet.

"It seems Gregg Williams will be a perfect partner to Sean Payton's high powered offense. In his previous stints as defensive coordinator on teams such as the Tennessee Titans , the Houston Oilers, and last year the Jacksonville Jaguars , Williams expects nothing but the best from his players.

" There is a palpable shift in attitude this offseason. It's a culture change that breeds a team mentality. With the addition of veterans such as Darren Sharper and Pierson Prioleau to lead the way during this transition.

" Randall Gay and Sedrick Ellis are itching to get the pads on, the defense is clicking on all cylinders. Recently during OTA's (organized team activities), I was thrilled to see a 'spirited' exchange between Zack Strief, 6'7", 320 lbs. and Jason David, 5'8", 185 lbs. wet.

" If its a 'can do' attitude that Williams' is looking for, I would have to say he is well on his way."

Maybe Mr. David should have picked on someone his own size or at least someone not on the No. 1 ranked offensive unit!

Geaux Saints! Just doing my job as Cheer LEADER!

Now bring on the Rams!

New Orleans Fans Love Their Saints!

The New Orleans Saints are undefeated and their fans are thrilled. Is this over the top? Maybe.

Saints fans don't think so.

On more than one occasion, both present and former players tell of the enthusiasm of Saints fans. Aren't all fans this way about their beloved team? We are no different than the rest of those who follow their team with reckless abandonment. Right?

According to Bobby Hebert (pronounced a-bear), who covers the Saints for WWL Radio 870 A.M., "Saints fans are one of a kind."

Mr. Hebert, not only quarterbacked for the Saints, but also had a stint with the Atlanta Falcons. I'd rather not go there! Instead I'll let his radio show cohort, Hokie Gajan, a former running back for the Saints and teammate of Mr. Hebert, take care of that for the fans. He'll get some ribbing for sure on Monday for his transgression in the latter part of the '90s.

Back to "our" Bobby, who redeemed himself as soon as he became the founding father of the "Who Dat Nation." He has made us proud to have him as our daily connection to the game. On his radio show after the win against the Dolphins last week, he wanted to make sure to get across to the fans just how much their support means to the team.

So how did the fans respond?

Thousands of them showed up at the airport to welcome their team back home. That's right, for those who aren't in the know: As soon as the team finishes an away game there is a network of local insiders who let their fingers do the walking to find out what time the team plane touches down.

Diehards have been doing it for years. I remember doing the same during the 1991 season. I also remember how moved Drew Brees was when he saw the same diehards out on a cold rainy night when thousands showed up after a hard fought loss. This was not just any bad weather day, it was actually a little after midnight on Christmas morning in 2006.

Just to clarify, the fans are not in the airport or even the parking lot, they (we) are parked on the access road that runs down a side street nowhere near the large commercial part of Louis Armstrong/New Orleans International Airport.

Why?

To show our love for our boys in Black and Gold.

The crowd erupts when we see the lights in the distance and the lucky few get a picture or maybe an autograph from members of the team as they drive off into the night. The rest get the memory of seeing our gridiron heroes smile back at the fans who adore them.

It's a win-win for everyone! My daughter, who was very tired the next morning after being out so late the night before, jumped right up when I reminded her of the autographs she got for "being in that number" watching her Saints come flying in.

Thank you Zack Strief and Jeff Charleston!

One last thing...Happy Birthday New Orleans Saints and I'll see you at the Dome for your Birthday Bash!

A Second Helping Of Saints Gumbo

Gumbo is always better the second time around!

My first serving was served to my guests on May 29, 2009. It was so well received that I thought it would be nice to defrost for a second helping. I hope you enjoy...

It is second nature to people in southern Louisiana, all gumbo starts with a roux.

What is a roux?

Tangible, roux: a binding agent that consists of flour and butter.

Intangible, roux: the delicate blending of flour in butter over a low flame until a light golden brown, now temper in as to not lump.

All tangible skills can be taught, most intangibles skills are earned from knowledge and practice.

On paper, the New Orleans Saints have the tangibles

Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator and a rookie like cornerback Malcolm Jenkins add new spice. With the acquisition of free agent Darren Sharper and existing personnel shifts, the 2009 season has all the makings of a savory gumbo.

Coach Sean Payton has promoted Pete Carmichael Jr., to offensive coordinator because he knows what he's getting. He knows that his offense has some fine tuning to do; sprinkle in a few more special plays around new and different talent.

With the freshest and finest of ingredients you are assured a great dish.

Keeping the Black and Gold injury-free for the upcoming season requires going that extra mile during the offseason. From conditioning to doctors appointments, whatever it takes to make sure that they are ready.

Being able to count on such anchors as Drew Brees and Randall Gay for their skills and leadership, while looking forward to the play of Robert Meachem, Reggie Bush, and Marques Colston can only "sweeten the pot."

With all of these ingredients, I am predicting a gumbo fit for Emeril Lagasse to serve at any of his eating establishments.

For the New Orleans Saints, that means an NFC South Title with the probability of the NFC title game...as long as the special teams, the rice, isn't over cooked.

This recipe still holds true.

One last thing—

Don't burn the roux.

New Orleans Saints Fans Say: Sorry, Eli Manning, "Not This Time"

The undefeated New Orleans Saints host the undefeated New York Giants in the Louisiana Superdome on Oct. 18, 2009, however Olivia and Archie Manning hosted members or the Giants' organization at their home in Uptown New Orleans last night.

Not a surprise in the least to anyone who is from Louisiana or even anyone who has visited the area.

Eli Manning is our native son, son of our beloved Archie Manning, brother of our Peyton Manning, we New Orleanians welcome him home with open arms. The Manning brothers are our Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, and we support all they do.

But not today and not this year! This is Drew Brees and his Saints' time to shine. Jeremy Shockey is ready to show how proud he is to be a Saint against his former team, as is Coach Sean Payton.

We watched you defeat the Patriots on big screens along the parade route and in the Convention Center on Bacchus Sunday but today Darren Sharper will be watching you with the same intensity.

We will be behind the Saints and, unfortunately, you will be on the opposite side of the cities support.

We still love you and the family; however, it's game time.

Earlier this weekend, I was able to ask John Fourcade, former New Orleans Saints quarterback, and current analyst about his take on the matchup between Darren Sharper and Eli Manning.

The native New Orleanian said: "Eli will know Sharper will be roaming around the field and try not to throw it over the middle against him, followed by "whoever runs the ball better." "It should be a close game, with a Saints win."

Tom Coughlin and his staff were shown our "Southern Hospitality" by our city's finest ambassadors. We thank you, the city of New York for your hospitality after Hurricane Katrina. But not today!

Today we battle and the city supports ONLY the Saints. Your souvenir, New York set sail without a hitch earlier in the week and should be there soon.

...and that's a sweep for the Big Easy over the Big Apple!

"Who Dat,Who Dat,Who Dat say gonna beat dem Saints,Who Dat!"

I'm Not The Greatest, But I Have Met Muhammad Ali

“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!”

No I’m not the Greatest, but I have met Muhammad Ali.

As a child I had the honor of not just meeting him, but spending time with him. My father was assigned to him via the New Orleans Police Department as his bodyguard.
Words can only begin to express the profound and prolific impact such men made on my life. Yes, I am putting my father right up there with Ali, you will too after this.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

First let me take you back in time to 1978. It was a time when Hotel California as well as disco were on AM radio. When the Archie Bunker Show and the Rockford Files were on our console televisions, and if you were lucky, you may have scored that old black and white set in your own room.

On Saturday mornings we would watch Schoolhouse Rock and boy how those songs helped us out years later when we had civics exams. To all those who know what I’m talking about, stop singing I’m Just a Bill and start reading again.

What a special time it was in New Orleans as well! We were hosting the biggest event in boxing that year: the Muhammad Ali versus Leon Spinks fight in the Superdome. The same place that America’s team, the Dallas Cowboys, beat the Denver Broncos during Superbowl XII which was the first Super Bowl in primetime as well as indoors.

Was it a simpler time? For me, without a doubt. I was a kid for Pete's sake. The world was just coming into focus for me. What a time for that.

My dad was bigger than life: an all pro football player for the Dixie League, a motorcycle policeman, now Muhammad Ali's bodyguard. Too bad I was too young to actually attend the fight. My older brother and I did watch it on TV at grandma's house, with mom and dad busy on the night!

I remember a gift Mr. Ali gave my dad. It was a "warm-up suit," a brown and tan Adidas model. It looked just like the Champ’s and even had Muhammad Ali’s name on the back. Let me tell you that back then there was one type of lettering...HUGE!

The other neat thing was the cut of the outfit.

It was called the "athletic cut," a new way (at the time) of making clothes for professional athletes. You see, back then, an extra large jacket with large pants yet a slim waist line was not the norm.

Back in the day, dad was not able to buy different sizes that actually fit off the rack; this was like Christmas for him. I think he wore it a few times, but then realized just how special it was.

The location of said suit is confidential; however, it is very safe!

Don't get me wrong, sports were a very integral part of life back then, but the aspect of taking care of the athlete was not the business it is now.

This brings me to the way Mr. Ali trained.

He rented a house in a suburban area of New Orleans; Lakeview to be exact. Some may be familiar with the area, as it was hit fairly hard during Katrina. Ali did this in order to continue training, but in our weather. The humidity in August and September is brutal.

I remember asking my dad why wouldn't he just go to a gym to run? The response was something along the lines of, "it's conditioning the body above and beyond the sport you want to excel at," and how those words still ring true in all areas of sports and life.

Just as the city loved Ali being here, he loved it, too.

He would jog every morning thru the neighborhood as part of his workout. Everyone, especially the children, knew this and would come outside to witness Greatness. Ali did not disappoint. He would, quite regularly, not only sign autographs, but talk and play with the kids.

He knew how much of an "idol" he was, that he was making a difference. He took this role very seriously, even then. He was beyond race issues that I am sure were around, but not around us.

To us he was just Mr. Ali, the man that tickled my dad's feet to wake him for their morning run. The same man that didn't let a loss a few months before define him. He let his comeback win do that:

Do you know if I beat him the first time I wouldn't have got no credit for it. He only had seven fights . . . the kid was nothing. . . . So I'm glad he won. It's a perfect scene. You couldn't write a better movie than this. This is it. Just what I need. Competition. Fighting odds. Can the old champ regain his title for a third time? Think of it. A third time. Do or die. And you know what makes me laugh? He's the same guy. Only difference is he got eight fights now.
—Muhammad Ali on Leon Spinks before their championship rematch fight

It still amazes me that I not only met him, but sat on his lap and was tickled by him!

Spending time with him away from the spotlight gave me such a perspective of Ali the man. The wonderful memory of the Champ rolling on the floor with his kids reminds me to enjoy those down times as often as possible.

He loved his sport while always making time for his family, as did my dad. In turn those memories make me a better mom!

Thanks Dad!

Thanks Champ!

Do Your Part: Save The TaTa's

October is National Breast Cancer awareness month, my question to all readers....Are YOU ready to do your part?

I am sure that I am not the only one who knows not only someone with Breast Cancer, but someone who has passed from it. At the same time, I know even more people who are Survivors!

As usual, the National Football League is once again behind, or in front of, a worthy cause.

You will notice more than a few players in the league sporting pink today. No need to adjust your TV. There will be pink cleats, pink gloves, no pink jerseys on players, however a sea of pink in the stands.

Begin Slideshow

The New Orleans Saints Off And Running Without Reggie Bush

It's a 3-0 start for the New Orleans Saints once again. Last time this was the case? The 2006 season! Yes, that season, the one when the Black and Gold were a game short of the Super Bowl.

Their offense is off and running but without the "star" of that year—Reggie Bush.

No, he is not listed as injured, but he is being used less and less.

Gone is Deuce McAllister, the bulldozing back that kept some pressure off of Reggie as he set records for his rookie season. Surely that will hurt the Saints in the long run, right?

As much as the fans still adore Mr. McAllister, they are quickly cheering many new names. Mike Bell, Lynell Hamilton, and Pierre Thomas have stepped in to keep the ball moving on the ground.

"Bring On Bell" sang to the tune of Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell" is the newest chant heard around the Crescent City. I know, he was inactive in Week Three due to a knee sprain. No problem. The Saints' offensive boys showed their diversity and depth while running all over the Buffalo Bills.

Reggie Bush had a few sparks this week, but coming up short on crucial third downs will keep you on the sidelines when you have Pierre Thomas scoring touchdowns.

Once again, Drew Brees and his offense got the job done. Before I go any further, I need to give props to the O-line. These guys are creating holes for the backs to capitalize on when running between the tackles.

Just in case some of you missed it, Zach Strief was not only declared an eligible tight end a few times, but when Jermon Bushrod went down with an ankle injury during the second half, Mr. Strief stepped right in to yet another slot without missing a beat.

More than a few times, Hamilton and Thomas snaked through the holes made by Jonathan Goodwin, Zach Strief, Matt Stinchcomb, and Carl Nicks.

It was the run and not the pass that secured the Saints' 27-7 victory over the Bills. The "Greatest Show on Turf" has to share the limelight, but Drew and the receiving corps have no problem with that.

The saying still holds true: Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships. On that count, the Saints are poised to go all the way.

Their defense held Terrell Owens to zero catches for the day. That's right: the New Orleans Saints defense broke T.O.'s 185 consecutive games with a catch streak.

Looks like coach Gregg Williams got the attention of his former team, as well as captured the hearts of Saints' fans.

Nice team play, guys, and congratulations on a great win.

Just a thought: ...Deuce is still loose!

Saints Vs Lions: This Should Be In Rome, Not The Dome

Many years ago, I remember having a conversation with "the man." No, not "The Man" meaning God, but my one and only, Pops.

It was the early '90s and the International Bowls were popping up all over the world during preseason. The Saints played the Raiders in London and a few years later I was lucky enough to make the trip to Tokyo for the Saints vs. Eagles game.

On our return with gifts in tow, a jade Japanese fighting horse in full war regalia, we discussed other pairings for future games. His all time favorite would be...the New Orleans Saints against the Detroit Lions in the Colosseum.

Sure, he had lofty dreams or a twisted sense of humor, but you have to admit, it would make a great story line.

Back story

In 64 A.D., Rome was ruled by the Emperor Nero. As the city tried to rebuild, Nero blamed the fall on the Christians. Christianity and Catholicism were banned and its followers were relegated to underground tombs for gatherings.

If caught, they faced cruel and unusual punishment, such as being fed to the lions. This became a form of entertainment and usually took place in the Colosseum.

Just as in ancient Roman times, our city has been destroyed, and its residents are pouring their hearts and souls into its revival. The difference is that now, we can shout it from the balconies on Bourbon Street, "We have kept the Faith!"

Our gladiators are no longer underpowered. They come from all walks of life: Trojans, Tigers, Boilermakers, and Volunteers have banned together with Hurricanes, Yellow Jackets, and Bulldogs to answer the call of victory for the Saints.

I guess all of the Novena's to Mother Mary did not go unanswered. We will continue to donate to our local St. Jude's, patron saint of lost or hopeless causes, for we know it is time to stand strong and face our fears.

It all begins on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 at noon in the Superdome—not Rome. Let's slay the Lions together as we proceed to the Promised Land...Miami!

New Orleans Saints: It's a Team Thing

What can the average fan expect with this year's Saints team?

INTENSITY and TEAMWORK have been the words most associated with this year's Saints.

This could be the year! Will Reggie Bush's prediction on "Live with Regis and Kelly" actually be more than just a wish for the local fans?

As the preseason comes to a close, it sure seems that way. With 3 wins in 3 games the fans are on their feet and ready for what they have been waiting for a long long time to see.

The Saints are coming...are you ready?
Begin Slideshow

NFL Cheerleaders: Behind The Scenes III

NFL Cheerleaders not only talk the talk, they walk the walk. Or should I say dance the dance.

Motivating the fans to cheer on the team is our job on the field. Entertaining a crowd with a smile on our face is what we love to do.

The Saintsations, along with most other NFL cheerleader organizations, go out into the community as good will ambassadors for their team. We actually do most of our work off the field through appearances.

Contrary to popular belief, most of these appearances are NOT PAID! That's right, its all charity. Our pay, however, is priceless.

We are paid with smiles and hugs from Special Olympians. We love to take pictures with fans and sometimes people ask for autographs. Our favorite times are those spent in children’s hospitals or assisted living areas. This is where our true calling really shows.

We bring cheer.

It's not surprising that two NFL cheerleaders founded "Sweethearts for Soldiers" in 2006. Who remembers Bob Hope and the USO tours? The tours are still around, but there are so many troops to be entertained that there are many going on all year round.

"Sweetening Soldiers Lives Everyday" is the motto they live by. Not only do they go into war zones to entertain, they also make gift bags for the troops.

This is all done through donations. In only three years these ladies have produced two calendars to raise funds. Through selling the calendars, they hope to make enough money to fly overseas to perform and sign calendars for the troops, as well as bring donated items.

Think of it as a Broadway show, where afterwards you get to meet the performers. In most instances, we even throw a party! It's a Saturday night get-together for friends to have a good time while off from work.

As for the female troops, they receive moisturizers and other things they don't normally get in a desert. I personally have committed to 20 pairs on hand-made earrings for the cause and can't wait to bring smiles to their faces.

Their work is far from over. Their mission is to "help raise morale and bring a touch of home to our brave men and women fighting for our freedoms." The "Sweethearts" are open to all retired NFL and NBA Cheerleaders who are interested that meet the criteria.

Maybe I'll break out that uniform one more time for such a great cause!

If interested in making a donation or buying ad space on the calendar please contact www.SweetheartsforSoldiers.com or www.Sweetheartsforsoldiers.org. Any and all support will be appreciated.

New Orleans Saints: Jason David Out John Carney In!

He's BACK!

John Carney once again kicking for the Saints and the fans are thrilled! We'll get back to him in just a bit.

What could knock such a story from the front row?

Jason David waived by the Saints this morning. That's what can.

Once again, Jason David was burned during a game for a big play and a score. The only points put up by the Bengals during the Saints 17-7 win on Friday night in the Superdome.

Jason David had been improving during OTA's and camp according to the coaching staff; however during crunch time it happened the same way it has during the past. This has just not been a good fit for Mr. David and we Saints fans wish him well.

Hopefully he will land in the AFC and will become another ex-Saint turned pro. Maybe we'll face off in the final dance of the season. Wouldn't that be prophetic?

Back to Mr. Carney! He said it was "like being in a time warp" while at practice on Sunday.

New Orleans loves kickers. Tom Dempsey and Morten Andersen have rock star status in the city and surrounding areas. At 45, Carney is hoping to continue in that tradition.

Will the staff keep both? There is a thought of yes. The current kicker, Garrett Hartley will be suspended for the first four games of the regular season due to a substance violation.

Yes, Hartley did miss a 19 yard chip shot during the game Friday night, but he did redeem himself later in the game. However, the maturity level shown while addressing the media leads me to believe he'll be here for a bit, possibly under the guidance of Carney.

With the release of Jason David and the signing of first year cornerback Greg Fassitt, I think the Saints have the dollars to keep both kickers. Only time will tell.

Fassitt is no stranger to the city; he is a product of Grambling University in Baton Rouge. He spent his high school years at none other than Kennedy High School in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Saints fans, I'm with ya......don't forget to breathe!

I’m not ready to say Super Bowl, but I may be willing to buy a ticket to the Pro Bowl being held in Miami the week before!

New Orleans Saints: This Ain't Our Usual Saints!

The beginning of football season is always met with cautious excitement and anxiety.

This year just seems different.

Fans are able to attend practice in their home town, instead of making a trek across state lines or down to bayou country. Being able to watch Jeremy Shockey catch three TD passes in the red zone has even fair-weather fans smiling.

That may play a part, but it’s more than that.

Seeing Reggie Bush leave practice then return with ice on his knee left more than a few uneasy, but watching him practice the same afternoon made more hearts jump a gleeful leap.

It's almost like the rumbling cadence of the high school bands heard in neighborhoods all over the Crescent City. Although it is early and there may be a few missed notes or a beat or two out of place, somehow the overall sound is this driving, well-rounded tone that leaves you wanting more.

Sure, there is some disappointment that Malcolm Jenkins still has not signed; however, his role seems to be needed less and less. Leave it to veteran journeymen such as Randall Gay and Darren Sharper to step up.

Maybe, just maybe, it is the new TEAM mentality. The feeling that we are all in this together. We feed off of the team’s work ethic and intensity; in return we need to bring the excitement when at a game.

The shift has definitely received some attention with visits from ESPN and even Coach Payton's friend, and former conference rival, Jon Gruden within the first week of camp. Chris Mortensen grabbed a burger from Bud’s Broiler on his way to practice; are we sure he's not a local?

The bottom line is this: once again Saints fans feel excited about the season ahead. Like the 2006 season, we are poised to do well. Drew has even more weapons to call on, the depth and variety on offense is astounding.

Now the defense is making its stand and what a stand it is shaping up to be. Each practice they are attacking the ball. These men seem to have what it takes and are using it to their advantage.

Gone are the days of being tight-lipped. Coach Payton has even left the Twitter craze solely in the hands of his players only reminding them that it is "like a press release by anyone. Be mindful of what you put out there."

Now that seems like change I can get behind.

The Island Of Misfit Toys: Michael Vick and a Saintly Connection

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell gave Vick a conditional reinstatement to the league Monday, which means Vick can play in the final two preseason games this year and then will be suspended for six weeks. After that, his full reinstatement will be likely and he should be eligible to play in Week 7.

Yes, you read correctly, Vick will be eligible to play in game seven. Some sources say that this is the latest; he could be back sooner, but week seven for sure.

Oh, the circus this will bring for the media moguls. But I am ready for a front row seat.

Let the jockeying begin. Let's face it: Owners, general managers and coaches alike are licking their chops. They will be able to get him for a steal if they are willing to take a chance.

I sure hope that our very own Island of Misfit Toys is where he will find a home.

The New Orleans Saints have welcomed those deemed "damaged" or "second chancers" on more than one occasion. Once again, we will welcome him in with open arms.

Our very own head coach Sean Payton was a replacement player who got his second chance against the Saints in the 1987 scrub season. In 2005, he took a chance on the city, the biggest of second chances, and decided to rebuild with us.

Next is Drew Brees, released from the Chargers due to a shoulder injury. I'll bet their front office wished they hadn't done that! But their loss, our gain and we love our bummed shoulder teddy bear.

Jeremy Shockey, who visited our repair shop a few too many times than expected last year, will be good as new. It seems his stuffing was twisted due to irregular thread used while repairing his leg from a previous injury.

I would like to take this time to thank the repair shop for all of their hard work. Although Jeremy was not ready for Santa's list, he did make an impact. It appears that 30 of his 50 receptions went for first downs. When Santa needed him, he led the way.

I can understand why some of the other toys may be nervous; they usually are when someone new arrives. Luckily for us, such veteran players as Fred MacAfee and Michael "beer man" Lewis hold staff positions geared to guide the toys on their journey.

Santa, I know it is six months until Christmas, but one of your toys needs a good home to help in his rehabilitation. I am sure that Mr. Benson and his granddaughter would be happy to open the Island another time for you.

Although Mike Vick is very familiar with how to make it to the Superdome (He has visited during Christmas when he was in college) could you please send a map?

Reggie Bush can’t remember where the North and South poles are located and his GPS is acting up, showing only east and west.

I am sure the folks down in New Orleans would love to have him. They have even offered to have a Redemption party for him on Monday, November 2, 2009. They already had this date saved for their Alumni game, so the Superdome will be rocking for him against his old team, the Atlanta Falcons.

INTEGRITY: Journalism and Sports

I am shocked at the reaction to the Erin Andrews issue swirling around the media.

At this point I would like to take a moment and VERY PUBLICLY say THANK YOU to all of the men who are defending Ms. Andrews. You are truly her, and our Champions for a cause we cannot fight by ourselves. It will take working together to accomplish that goal. We appreciate all of your votes of confidence.

Back to the story at hand, there are many articles and comments swirling around in the media in reference to Erin Andrews that are invalid.

Yes, she was named by Playboy as America's Sexiest Sportscaster for 2007 and 2008. She was also hired by EA Sports to commentate their March Madness 2008 basketball video game, as well as appearing on their NCAA Football '10 providing sideline updates.

To insinuate that she had any responsibility what so ever is frankly irresponsible journalism.
The impression for some is, that women can be smart OR attractive. We are saying,"We can be both"

As far as I recall, Descartes’ said, "I think therefore I am", not "I think therefore I am unattractive"

New Orleans Saints: My Team, My Way!

I have a confession to make: I found Bleacher Report due to the CBSSports.com correspondent application process.
So there, I've said it.

According to the "rules", journalism experience was preferred, not required.
What I did have was a wealth of experience in and around professional sports and the entertainment industry.
My Saints have opened so many doors during my life, how could I not jump at the chance to cover them for CBSSports via Bleacher report?
Sure, I'll have to come up with 5 articles, but there is a list of compulsory topics. That I can do, I have been around football all my life. Truth be told, the New Orleans Saints, in the 70's were my second favorite team. My dad's semi-pro team, the Blue Knights, was my first.
Yes, I knew I was going into this with a bit of a handicap, but I would NEVER forgive myself if I didn’t try.
Now the contest is over, and I am ecstatic to say, I was one of the finalist. So I didn’t get the “job”, but the experience sure outweighed the outcome.
Here’s a brief look at how it went, with the help of ‘Ole Blue Eyes, the Chairman of the board, Mr. Frank Sinatra.

And now, the end is near,
And so I face the final curtain.
My friends, I'll say it clear;
I'll state my case of which I'm certain.

NFL Cheerleaders: Behind the Scenes, Part Two

So you say you want a closer look at the NFL Cheerleaders, I think I can take you there.
Well atleast behind the scenes of the New Orleans Saintsations. Being an active member of the Saintsations Alumni group, I should be able to get a little lagniappe (a little something extra).
Last year we finally had another reunion. We were being honored during the Saints versus Raiders game. Any of my sideline sisters who wanted to take part were invited to be on the field again. How could I say no? You bet I'm in!
Wait, what do we have to wear?
Ok great, the Alumni uniform is black pants and a white shirt that will be provided gameday. I can handle that.
Rumblings this offseason, the Alumni will not just be presented this year, they will PERFORM!
Now in true cheerleader form.... OMG, no more ice cream for me!
Once again, how can I pass this up?
Time to start two-a-days while the boys are in camp.

A Former Saint Is a Utah Ute, Again!

Kyle Whittingham, head coach of the Utah Utes, is no stranger to New Orleans.

It is no coincidence New Orleans is where Whittingham collected his fourth straight Bowl victory at Utah.

It seems he went back to Utah with more than a trophy for a souvenir. He also brought John Pease back as a coach.

About a month before the Sugar Bowl, Coach Whittingham found out his long time friend and assistant Gary Andersen was offered the head coaching job of the Utah State Aggies.

These men started coaching together at Idaho State in 1992, and had been at Utah since 1997.

Who could Coach Kyle count on from the beginning to step right in?

He needed a coach who knew his defense and could expand what is already in place.

Who can fill that void?

John Pease can.

John Pease is one of the men responsible for the "Dome Patrol" which included Ricky Jackson, Pat Swilling, Vaughan Johnson, and the late Sam Mills.

The Dome Patrol is still considered the best linebacker corps in Saints history as well as the NFL.

In 1986 Coach Pease started his first tenure with the Saints. At the same time Kyle was playing linebacker in the USFL.

For what team?

Of all places, for the New Orleans Breakers.

This was not Coach Whittingham’s first stint in New Orleans, but his second. As a young boy just starting to play football, he had a front row seat for the inaugural season of the New Orleans Saints.

Fred Whittingham, Kyle's dad, was a linebacker already in the league for two years before being traded to the Saints. He played for the Saints for two seasons before heading to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Utes have a tradition of hard-nosed football. Both offense and defense are known for their disciplined but aggressive play.

Having John Pease as an addition to the coaching staff will only add to such a tradition.

Coach Pease's pedigree is quite long. He has 19 years in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has coached in many playoff games including the 1996 and 1999 AFC Championship game in Jacksonville.

Before he retired, Pease held the active NFL coaching record of career sack production (811).

He has coached in the Pro bowl as well as being the defensive coordinator for the West team in the East-West Shrine game in 2008.

His return to Utes will be his third appearance as a coach but his fourth time as a member. He was a linebacker for the Utes in 1963 and 1964 lettering both seasons.

How exciting to be headed back to his alma mater.

Former NFL MVP Murdered

Steve McNair, former Ravens and Titans quarterback, has been found dead.

An investigation is well underway and details are limited at this time.

He was found in downtown Nashville along with a yet-to-be-identified 20-year old female. Both appear to have gunshot wounds.

At this time it is being investigated as a double homicide. McNair was 36 years old.

McNair leaves behind a wife and four sons.

More details coming as soon as they are available.

A former fraternity brother and NFL player has been quoted as saying, "his wife did not shoot him and please stop such rumors."

Please keep Mr.McNair's family in your thoughts through this most difficult time.

LSU Tigers Vs Texas Longhorns: Winner Takes All!

It's game three of the College World Series and it's winner takes all.

The LSU Tigers take on the Texas Longhorns for the 2009 title. Both of these teams are considered titans of the sport.

The Longhorns boast six titles. LSU currently holds five, but with the way the sticks are flying, the Tigers may have their sixth tonight.

Jared Mitchell just ripped one out of the park to give LSU a three-run lead. Not at all surprising for LSU fans: this man already sports a national title ring in football.

He was a wide receiver for the 2007 National Championship team under Les Miles. Coach Miles, along with Skip Bertman, are on hand to watch this one.

Both teams will have to bring it all evening. Anthony Ranaudo will start with Matty "Ice Ice" Ott to close.

Once again, the fans of Louisiana are glued to their televisions to pull for their team. Yes its hurricane season again, but the Tigers are on!

Coach Mainieri, we put our trust in you! Wally Jr., we know you're watching so keep cheering us on.

Saints fans and Tigers alike.....WE BELIEVE!

UPDATE.... the fat lady is warming up! Tigers are up by 7!

LSU Tigers: A Father's Day Gift Like No Other!

It's Father's Day once again, time to give back to dad. As the LSU Tigers await their appearance in the College World Series Championship game, could one former Tiger be helping from a higher place?

It is a Hollywood script in the making. Another post-Katrina team overcoming adversity to win a National Championship, but its the back story that will make it an Academy Award winner. The name: "My Brother's Keeper: Always '31."

For anyone who has followed Tiger baseball, this is not a surprise. The last time the Tigers won it all in baseball was in 2000, and Wally Pontiff, Jr., as a freshman, had a huge impact on that win. Now can his little brother Nicholas, a senior this year, do it again?

Wally Jr.'s quest for another CWS championship was never achieved, but his hard work was always admired. Not surprising for the All-American student athlete.

For those who aren't familiar, Wally Pontiff, Jr. passed away in his sleep on July 24, 2002, due to a heart defect. He had attended a baseball game earlier that week with his dad, Wally Pontiff, Sr., a former Tulane University pitcher. Junior had been drafted by the Oakland A's. Now a gut wrenching decision needed to be made, and Wally Jr. was weighing his options.

Nicholas is not the most talented on this year's team, but his heart is a driving force. He reminisced during the Wally Pontiff, Jr. playground dedication on one of his brother's games.

"I was five years old, eating a hamburger behind the right field fence," said Pontiff. "Next thing I knew I was in the emergency room having an X-ray on my back. My brother, at 10 years old, had hit a home run."

Of all the places for the ball to land, his brother's back, I am sure, was not where he had planned.

Nick, also an award-winning student athlete, was quoted as saying, "My older brother was a huge part of my life. He was my idol. But we're actually very different as baseball players, so my goals are to be a credit to my dad and compared to my brother as a person."

On Father's Day, how wonderful a gift: the gift of time. Time to enjoy a game with dad, the man who shares your passion for baseball.

The excitement the fans of LSU are putting off reminds me of the vibes we felt leading up to the Superdome re-opening. The fans support the team while the team supports its fans.

As an LSU fan I can't wait for tomorrow. As a fan of the Pontiff family, my fingers are crossed and I have nothing but happy thoughts!

My father went to school with the Pontiff family. Mr. Wally was my brother's pitching coach, and his brother was in my mom and dad's wedding.

My father passed in 2005, or we would be watching the game together tomorrow. I do know that both he and Wally Jr. will be tuned in, probably watching together.

Geaux Tigers!

NFL Cheerleaders: Behind the Scenes Part One

For 32 teams of the NFL, June is for the heavily regulated Organized Team Activities (OTA's) at their team facilities.

For 26 other NFL teams, the roster is already set. When the players are still hoping to make their squad, the NFL cheerleaders season is in full swing.

Yes, there are STILL six teams who currently do not have sisters of the sidelines. Bears, Browns, Giants, Lions, Packers and Steelers are the hold outs, but that's a story for another day.

The NFL cheerleader has little if any offseason. Tryouts generally coincide with draft time. The difference being we must be in our best form, unless you want to be cut during the first round.

Conditioning is EVERYTHING! We cannot show up with torn ACL's or stained hamstrings and expect to be on this years squad. Getting hurt today could be a season or possible career ending injury.

We are not allowed the luxury of showing up 10 pounds heavier then last year. It's crunch time.

From the time the gates are unlocked, it is a playoff mentality.

And we are ready. This IS our NFL. We didn't dream of throwing the winning touchdown, we cheered for our brothers back in little league. We are ready do astound the keepers of our dream with our dance ability, game acuity and personality.

First is group interviews. It usually consists of name, hometown and something personal you'd like to add. Next varies, some auditions start with solo's brought from home and then move to learned choreography, while others start with group dance and whittle down before smaller groups and/or solos.

Now its the waiting...and the waiting...and the "I can't take this anymore, this is killing me", and then...

The announcements begin and we wait to hear our number. As each is called the floor erupts with cheer, another one of us gets her dream come true. Now time to relax.

Not so fast, practice begins the following week. There are uniforms to be fitted, this is generally done during the first gathering followed by refinement of a the tryout routine. We can not do charity events or appearences until these two things are ready.

There are contracts to be signed, an no it does not have to do with weight. It deals more with being a representative of the NFL. That's when it really starts to set in. We made it!

The first preseason game will be here in the blink of an eye. It will be our turn to cheer on our boys. It is our job to keep the 12th man on the field during a crucial time.

We love to cheer and we love our team. We are counting down until the first game. We can't wait to step on the field where we'll greet the team as they are announced.

When we hear the "Star Spangled Banner" play, we will all feel the energy. Then it's game time! Is it August yet?

Saints Begin Practice: It's Getting Hot in New Orleans

It has been very rainy and humid the past few days in New Orleans, but not today.

A gift from above and on the very afternoon the Saints have opened practice to the public.

Is this a taste of what's to come?

The excitement is being felt all around the city and surrounding areas. Fans are once again standing behind their team.

For the fourth year in a row, every year since Katrina, and during a slump in the economy, season-ticket holders have sold out the Superdome.

If you are on the waiting list for the first time, good luck. I wouldn't get your hopes up for season tickets—there is a 50,000-person waiting list.

You can buy single-game tickets later in the summer, but for now if you want to see the boys in black and gold, you should be on your way to Airline Drive for practice either today at 3:00 pm or tomorrow at 10:00 am.

I, for one, can't get enough and look forward to the intensity during team drills.

See you there Who Dat Nation!

Morten Andersen In New Orleans Again!

Could it be the miracle for which Saints fans have been waiting? With the dismal kicking game of the last year, is it true?

Is Morten Andersen really back in New Orleans?

Yes!

As a Saint?

Yes, yes, yes!

New Orleanians are second lining the streets. The city is awarded the 2013 Superbowl, for a record 10th time, and the Great Dane has come home again.

"Bless your heart", you thought I meant as a player. I am sorry to inform you that Mr.Andersen will not be part of the roster for this season, but he will forever be a Saint.

Morten has retired and our city will bestow an honor on him that is long overdue. He will be inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame the weekend of Nov. 5, 2009.

During a recent visit to New Orleans, Morten took a trip down memory lane with CBS broadcaster and local voice of the Saints, Jim Henderson. They reminisced about his star status and Morten's restaurant, Champion's.

Of course, the first winning season in 1987 and the 1991 NFC West Championship Season were discussed. Andersen even admitted, "deep down I was happy for the Saints and the city" in regards to Atlanta's loss to the Saints on Sep. 25, 2006. "No-one was going to beat the Saints that night."

The Saints, the city, and the fans have a very unique relationship; they always have. Over 70 percent of the city's inhabitants are born and raised Louisianans who love their boys in Black and Gold. The good, the bad, and the ugly—we still love them!

Drew Brees And The Saints: Accent The Positive and Eliminate The Negative

The New Orleans Saints seem to be most effective in the spread formation. This is why Reggie Bush in the arsenal is such a detriment to opposing defenses.

When Bush lines up in the spread, Drew Brees has the option of using him as a standard running back, pounding his way through for short yardage.

But Reggie is much more effective and elusive as an all purpose back. A short dump in the flat or a shovel pass allows Reggie’s speed and athleticism to capitalize on mismatches with typically slower linebackers.

Now let’s talk about Brees and his ability to read the opposing defenses. When he lines up in the shotgun or even goes to the three-step drop, both of which are associated with the spread formation, Brees is able to quickly get rid of the ball.

When executed properly, fewer sacks are allowed, thus minimizing third-and-long situations. Inefficiency on third down has been an Achilles heel for the Saints for more years than the fans care to remember, and having Drew launch one on first down erases all those thoughts.

Having many different looks on offense stemming from the spread has allowed the boys in Black and Gold to dominate the passing game in the 2008 season.

Will they be able to repeat that task this year? Only time will tell. From the attitude on Saints' drive, the players think, “Yes we can, and we will.”

With the loss of Deuce McAllister during the offseason to make room under the salary cap, a complementary back to Bush is sorely needed. The rushing game from last year needs serious work.

An average of 99.6 yards per game, 28th in the league, seems almost overlooked due to the magnificent numbers from Drew’s passing game.

Such a hole remaining this year would be a shame for what has the potential of being the most diverse offenses in the league.
