Top Five Questions Facing the Boston Celtics this Offseason

Coming off a disappointing finish in the Playoffs, the Boston Celtics have many questions that need to be addressed in order for them to continue their current success.

Here are five questions the Celtics will have to face this offseason in order to contend for another NBA title.

1. The Future of Ray Allen

Ray Allen has been an integral part in the Celtics' success over the past two seasons, but he is due $19.7 million next season and he's not getting any younger—he turns 34 next month.

There are a couple things the Celtics can do: they can trade Allen along with another player for younger, more cost-efficient players or Boston could keep Allen and hope to improve through free agency and the draft.

The Celtics should look to deal Allen, seeing as he still has some value among NBA teams that are in the trade market.

The Celtics could trade Allen to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Thabo Sefolosha and the rights to the Thunder's second first-round draft pick—No. 25 overall.

With that pick, the Celtics could address their need for another wing and select either SF Terrence Williams (Louisville) or SF Sam Young (Pittsburgh).

Both Williams and Young bring a level of maturity that is ready for immediate NBA action and learning from Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett would help them immensely.

Getting rid of Allen for Sefolosha and a first-round pick would save Boston about $13 million next season alone. That would allow for more aggressive spending in free agency or cash to sign current players to longer deals.

2. Draft Status

Assuming the Celtics made no moves prior to the draft, the only pick they would have would be the No. 58 pick overall in the second round.

The Celtics are in dire need of another aggressive and athletic shooter off the bench to complement Tony Allen's defensive prowess and Leon Powe and Glen Davis' rugged styles.

One player that is expected to be available at this position is Kentucky shooting guard Jodie Meeks.

Meeks is perhaps the best pure shooter in this class and has an unbelievable body that should be able to hold up over the course of a demanding NBA season.

This is a low risk, high reward situation because there is no guaranteed money being discussed in the second round, so the Celtics could insert Meeks in the lineup for a "tryout" of sorts.

Meeks could replace Ray Allen in the lineup if the Celtics part ways with him—as they should.

If the Celtics were trade to Allen to the Thunder as I stated they should, the Celtics could potentially use that first-round selection on another big man with potential and then draft Meeks in the second round.

A player like Taj Gibson (USC) or DeMarre Carroll (Missouri) could give the Celtics much-needed athleticism and length in the post, something that Leon Powe and Glen Davis simply do not offer.

A Gibson/Meeks combination would excite an already lively fan base and would be viewed as a successful draft for the Celtics.

3. Free Agent Targets

If the Celtics were to deal Allen, there would be a major decision to make: with the extra money do you sign additional players through free agency or do you lock up current players for the future?

Say the Celtics dip into the free agent market; they would be looking for a scoring wing and an athletic big man and there are plenty of each available this offseason.

Ben Gordon and Trevor Ariza both are wings who can put the ball in the hole and would fit the Celtics' budget without Allen in town.

Gordon is a proven scorer who can demand constant attention, freeing up Pierce for mid-range looks and Garnett for his patented fade-away jump shot.

Ariza is a player who burst onto the scene this season with the L.A. Lakers by playing lock-down defense and consistently hitting open jumpers.

As far as post players go, Chris Andersen and Hedo Turkoglu could fit what the Celtics are trying to do.

Andersen is the prototypical big man the Celtics are looking for, while Turkoglu is the "home run" type signing that could energize an aging franchise.

Andersen is as athletic and exciting as they come and would probably be available at a very cheap rate—$4 to 6 million—while it would probably take all the Celtics' cap room to sign an All Star-caliber player like Turkoglu.

Either way, the Celtics could benefit from signing players through free agency.

4. Signing and Re-signing Current Players

If the Celtics did not want to sign through free agency, in fear of not having much room for the stellar 2010 free agency class, they could always lock up players to long-term extensions.

A player like Rajon Rondo has really improved over the past couple years and only has two years left on his deal.

This may seem like a long time, and it is, but Rondo is only getting better, so the earlier the Celtics sign him to a long deal, the less it is going to cost them.

The Celtics also have players of their own that are eligible for free agency.

Both Glen Davis and Leon Powe are restricted free agents and will need to be resigned and Eddie House is an unrestricted free agent and is available to sign with any NBA team beginning at the end of June.

The Celtics are definitely going to have to spend some money on some of these players because they can not afford to lose all three if they want to sustain their level of play next season.

5. Future Team Expectations

The Boston Celtics will most likely return all of their key pieces from a team that has won an NBA title and made the playoffs twice in the last two seasons.

It appears the Celtics have cooled on trade talks with teams about Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo and they are looking to build towards the future through the draft and free agency.

Team chemistry will be high, especially now that "The Big Three" are all on their last legs. Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett will all have the type of focus and determination that they had when they won the 2008 NBA Championship and the expectations will be similar.

Fans should expect another playoff berth, and perhaps another trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Unless Ray Allen is dealt and draft picks are gained for this year's draft, I would not expect the Celtics to continue their success past next season.

The Big Three will all be declining in ability and rising in age and Rajon Rondo is not the type of player to put a franchise on his back.

It should be an interesting off season to say the least and the Celtics are just one of many teams who should make it interesting.

Jodie Meeks to the NBA: What It Means for the Kentucky Wildcats

With news coming out today that All-American guard Jodie Meeks is heading for the NBA, instead of another year at Kentucky, many Wildcat fans thought the same thing, "Where do we go from here?"

To answer this question you have to look at the players that will be replacing Meeks in the Kentucky lineup next season.

Two new players to the program, Darnell Dodson and Jon Hood, will look to replace Meeks in the Kentucky lineup by using a mix of lineups to confuse opponents.

Dodson, a 6'7" junior, spent last season at Miami Dade College after transferring from Pittsburgh during his freshman campaign.

Hood, a 6'7" freshman, was born and raised in Madisonville, Kentucky and is the reigning "Mr. Basketball" in the state of Kentucky.

Like Meeks, Dodson is a deadly shooter from long range with the ability to completely dominate a game from behind the arc.

Hood can stroke from long-range as well but makes his presence known from the mid-range because of his silky smooth jumper that becomes impossible to block when factoring in his length.

Meeks' departure leaves the Wildcats much thinner at the shooting guard spot. Eric Bledsoe, one of two incoming five-star point guards, will play along side John Wall—the other five-star point guard joining the Cats—in the Kentucky lineup.

The biggest question surrounding Meeks' exit is how will Kentucky's preseason ranking be affected. Many believe they will remain within the top-three, along with Kansas and Villanova.

In my mind, Kentucky moves from second to third in the preseason rankings, falling behind Villanova after Scottie Reynolds announced his return to Nova.

John Calipari, Kentucky Hurt More than Others by Derrick Rose Allegations

On May 27, news broke that Derrick Rose, a standout on the 2008 Memphis Final Four team, may have had his academic grades changed during his senior year in high school.

At the time, many people believed this would be an investigation dedicated solely to the Memphis athletic department. In the two weeks since the information was released, the bulk of the blame has been placed on former coach, and accused cheater, John Calipari.

Calipari has been called everything from a liar to a greasy slimeball since the allegations of alleged cheating was released.

Many people do not realize the effect that these accusations could have on Calipari and the program he now runs.

It was announced today that Will Barton, a high school senior-to-be and top 10 recruit, committed to the University of Memphis, when it was known that Kentucky was the clear leader for his services.

In an interview conducted after his verbal announcement, Barton stated that coaches at Memphis told him that Calipari was the source of the problem, and were he to play at Kentucky, he would be representing a liar and a cheater.

All the negative publicity and criminal accusations have many Kentucky fans wondering if they missed the news when Calipari was found guilty and to blame for this behavior.

The answer is no. Calipari has not been charged in any way, and in fact, the NCAA cleared Calipari before UK hired him, as these accusations were known for months by the two universities.

As it stands, the old saying "innocent until proven guilty" is not being used in this situation.

It seems the college basketball world is doing all it can to rain on the Kentucky parade.

When Kentucky wrapped up perhaps the greatest recruiting class in NCAA history, there were the Duke, Louisville, and Tennessee fans to crown Calipari a cheater and to announce that there is no way Eric Bledsoe or DeMarcus Cousins could qualify—which they both have.

But where does Memphis stand in all this? The program that let Derrick Rose in, the program that looked at Robert Dozier's two SAT scores and cleared him, and the program that is currently under investigation has been using the Calipari card the entire time.

Memphis signed Latavious Williams last week, a player known around the recruiting world as having grade issues himself.

They just took Will and Antonio Barton from Kentucky simply by claiming their own mess was someone else's fault.

In no way does it appear that Memphis' reputation will be questioned, but Calipari and Kentucky, however, will face the persecution of the nation and will be ushered in as the next band of cheaters who are trying to ruin this perfectly run game.

A.M. As GM: The Best Team Money Can Buy

When you look across the NBA and see insanely wealthy teams like the New York Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks struggling you may wonder to yourself, 'How can they spend that much money and be that bad?'

Teams in this era do not know how to spend their money efficiently.

Any team who gives Jason Kidd $21.3 million or Stephon Marbury $19.8 million obviously has some front office issues,

The average team payroll in the NBA this season was $71,846,551 and I plan on showing you the best 12 man rotation that this money can buy.

Point Guard

First of all, as I have stated previously, I believe a great point guard is overrated in the NBA. Rajon Rondo was not great last season for the Celtics win they won the title, Jason Williams definitely was not great for the 2004 Miami Heat and this list goes on and on.

Since I am playing GM, I want a point guard who can distribute and play some defense. My point guard must be young because the trend over the past few years on successful teams has been a young point guard.

I decided to take Rajon Rondo as my starting point guard for $1.6 million per season.

Rondo is known as an incredible defender as well as being a great passer and play maker in the open floor. He is improving every game it seems and the fact that he has already won an NBA title and started for a successful team for two consecutive seasons is a positive.

Amount left: $71.8 million - $1.6 million = $70.2 million

Shooting Guard

Just about every great team has an above average shooting guard in this day and age. I wanted a player who could lead my team in the locker room as well as someone who would not point the finger at anyone else. This ruled out Kobe, Allen Iverson, and Vince Carter right off the bat.

Like every other position I want someone who has proved something, yet has enough left in the tank to play at the top of their game.

At my starting shooting guard spot I took Brandon Roy because of his diversity on the offensive end of the floor and the hustle and heart he plays with every game.

Roy has improved on just about every part of his game over his three year NBA career and he still has limitless potential. Within three years I see Brandon Roy being one of the top five players in the NBA.

The best part is that Roy is only due $3.0 million this season, making him the most cost efficient star in the NBA by far.

Amount left: $70.2 million - $3.0 million = $67.2 million

Small Forward

Although he is due to get the biggest contract in NBA history after next season, LeBron James still has to be considered under paid until he in fact is the highest payed player in the league.

James is the best player in the league by my estimation and no one will deny he is the one player you would pick if you were starting a team right now.

Being only 24 years old, LeBron still can improve that iffy jumper and become even more intimidating on defense and truly become perhaps the best player to ever play the game. Based solely off statistics LeBron could be the best player since Wilt Chamberlain if he can put up 30-8-8 per game.

James made $14.1 million dollars this past season and would be worth every penny if he were to play with a star like Brandon Roy and a point guard as flawless in the open court as Rajon Rondo.

Amount left: $67.2 million - $14.1 million = $53.1 million

Power Forward

The power forward position was the hardest one to choose. There were many valuable and worthy candidates but I was looking for someone with experience and leadership.

Most of the top power forwards are young and athletic so I broke my own mold and picked the highest paid player in the league, Kevin Garnett.

Garnett may be the best leader in the sport and he gives his all literally every single game. Garnett will do anything to win, even if that means sacrificing his own statistics—see the last two seasons with Boston.

Garnett is a force on both ends of the floor, being named Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 and owning an MVP trophy from 2004.

On this team Garnett would get to play with his current point guard, Rajon Rondo, as well as two of the top players in the league.

With his passing ability and ability to build team chemistry there is no doubt that he would bring this group of stars together for a deep run in any league.

Amount left: $53.1 million - $24.7 million = $28.4 million

Center

At center we had to choose the most dominant force in the paint, Dwight Howard.

The addition of Howard to this already stacked roster makes them the most dominant starting five in NBA history.

Howard averaged 2.9 blocks per game this season on his way to the Defensive Player of the Year award.

The addition of Howard gives this team the past two Defensive Player of the Year winners as well as this season's runner up—LeBron James. This team also would dominate offensively because it would be impossible to double team any of scoring options.

Can you imagine LeBron James going one-on-one against anyone in the league without any help?!

Amount left: $28.4 million - $13.7 million = $14.7 million

Bench

Sixth Man

Bruce Bowen has been around the league a long time and would be that much needed bench leadership. He would be the guy pushing the rest of the reserves to become better and give their all in practice and on the bench.

Bowen has playoff experience as well, which would help gain him minutes down the stretch of games if Rondo or Roy is not performing.

Bowen has a money three point jumper, especially from the corner, and is still recognized as one of the premiere defenders in the league.

Amount left: $14.7 million - $4.0 million = $10.7 million

Seventh Man

Paul Millsap would be the first big man off the bench for this epic team. Millsap continues to be the most under paid player in the NBA at about $800,000 this season.

Millsap, a three-time rebounding champion in college, grabs rebounds with the best in the league and is a very smart player for his age. He makes tough shots and can guard players much bigger and stronger than he.

Amount left: $10.7 million - $800,000 = $9.9 million

Eighth Man

Although he is seemingly over the hill, it is always necessary to have a player like Lindsey Hunter on your team. Hunter, like Bruce Bowen, brings a toughness to this team and would do a great job teaching the more skilled Rajon Rondo because of his years of experience.

Hunter is a tough-minded player who never gives up and is very crafty in his play.

Amount left: $9.9 million - $1.1 million = $8.8 million

Ninth Man

As GM, I wanted a team that would play defense no matter what five players were on the court. Obviously the starting rotation has great defensive players—Rajon Rondo, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, and Dwight Howard—but so does the bench.

Along with Bruce Bowen, Trevor Ariza would make perhaps the second best defensive team in the league, behind their starters.

Ariza hits the three well and is a fabulous on-ball and off-ball defender. He plays pretty smart throughout games and is a great team player.

Amount left: $8.8 million - $2.9 million = $5.9 million

Tenth-Twelfth Men

The tenth man on this historic team would be Drew Gooden. Gooden is cost-efficient—$1.4 million—and becomes the first reserve big man who can consistently knock down the mid range jump shot

Amount left: $5.9 million - $1.4 million = $4.5 million

The eleventh man on my team would be the only rookie on the team. Courtney Lee has been playing unbelievably well for the Orlando Magic in these playoffs and brings a certain swagger to this team.

Maybe it was dunking on LeBron James or hitting clutch jump shots but something about Lee makes me want him on my team more and more every time I watch him.

I would not feel nervous putting Lee in the game late in the fourth quarter, something not often said about the eleventh man on a team.

Amount left: $4.5 million - $1.2 million = $3.3 million

The last player I would have off the bench would be Yi Jianlian. Yi is still very raw but has the potential to be a Dirk Nowitzki-type player. He has the length, quickness, and jump shot to be a factor in the NBA and would have time to learn on a team featuring so many great big men, especially Kevin Garnett.

Garnett would be able to teach Yi about the game of basketball and give him pointers on improving his game.

After LeBron and Kobe, Carmelo Anthony Is the Best Player in the NBA

All season long the question has been, "Who is better: LeBron or Kobe?"

Well, odds are that question will not be solved, so it is time to move on.

A better question to ask is 'Who is the third-best player in the league behind LeBron and Kobe?'—that's the order I like, feel free to flip it.

Many people feel that Dwyane Wade came back from two seasons of injury to take the honor, while many others feel strongly that the physical specimen that is Dwight Howard has risen to the third spot.

I, on the other hand, believe firmly that Carmelo Anthony has reached this position, and done it somewhat under the radar.

Melo has put up consistent numbers this entire season, and in the playoffs especially—scoring at least 22 points in each of his last 11 games, the last five of which have gone for over 30.

He is the only player in the league who scores 22 points, grabs six rebounds, dishes out at least three assists, and shoots 37 percent from behind the arc (among players who have attempted at least 170 three-pointers this season).

Carmelo simply does it all.

Not to mention he is the best player on perhaps the best team in the Western Conference, and has scored 39 and 34 points respectively over the past two games against Kobe Bryant—one of the premiere defenders in the game and a First-Team All-Defensive Team member.

Carmelo has been called soft in his career, and has been called out for not stepping up in big games. But in this postseason he is the only player to average 28 points, six rebounds, and shoot at least 42 percent from behind the arc.

Melo also makes his teammates better—more than people think. He demands a double team when he drives—which is often—and routinely finds the open man, who either gets a wide-open look or finds someone who does.

The other two candidates for the third best player in the league—Dwyane Wade and Dwight Howard—can not compare with Anthony.

Anthony is a much better shooter and post player than Wade, and simply more consistent and skilled than Howard.

However way you look at it there is no denying the vast improvement and maturity to Anthony's game over his six full NBA seasons.

And he is only getting better.

The Art Of Building an NBA Winner

NBA General Managers have it tough, we know this.

They get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to construct a group of players to succeed, not simply on the basketball court but in the community and in the media as well.

The NBA is a business. But building an on-the-court winner is still the most important element to having a good franchise that can win championships.

But what are some of the areas that GM's should be looking for when tinkering with their rosters in hope of constructing the next dominant team?

The first, and most important, element of building a successful team is experience. The past 10 NBA Champions have each had two or less players come straight out of high school, because going to college builds a mental toughness and maturity that these high school kids must learn on the fly.

Aside from the 2004 Dwyane Wade-led Miami Heat team, every NBA Champion this millennium has been led in scoring by a player of 25+ years of age.

This note is why teams such as the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Charlotte Bobcats, and Memphis Grizzlies are consistently abysmal year in, year out.

The second ingredient to team success is defense. This may seem obvious, but when you think of the '01 Lakers or the '96 Bulls, you don't think of lock-down defensive teams, you think of Kobe and MJ putting up 30 a night with ease.

Reality is, since those '96 Bulls, every single NBA Champion has finished in top 10 in the league in Defensive Rating—points allowed per 100 possessions.

Every NBA Champion has their lock-down defenders, usually around the perimeter. Last season's Boston Celtics had key reserves Tony Allen and James Posey, while the the Chicago Bulls always had Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

This is why the Phoenix Suns, though fun to watch, will never—and I mean never—win the NBA title as long as they average over 106 points per game. No team since 1994 has won an NBA title averaging more than 106 points per game...none.

But for every important piece to the puzzle there is an equally overrated piece. Teams spend hours researching the fads of successful teams and they forget areas in which the leaders in that area have not done well.

It is always said that a team that hits their free throws is successful. John Calipari was bashed last season for defending that hitting your free throws is not the most important thing, and it looks like he was right.

Of the top 70 teams in NBA history, in terms of free throw shooting, not a single one of them won the NBA Championship. Think about that. You have to go to No. 71, the 1985-1986 Boston Celtics, to find the best free-throw shooting NBA Champion.

There is another statistic that you would think would translate to huge success on the court and that is turnovers. One would assume that the better a team takes care of the ball, the better they play, and the more wins they get.

The 14 teams in NBA history that took care of the ball the best all failed to win the title. Obviously you won't find NBA Championship teams leading the league in turnovers but this proves that teams do not have to play tightly and conservatively to win.

A great point guard is a bit overrated as well. If you review past NBA Champions, you will find many teams that were led either by a young or unproven point guard.

Last season, the Boston Celtics were led by 22-year-old Rajon Rondo and the 2004 Miami Heat were led by an inconsistent Jason Williams.

The teams that follow these characteristics tend to take home trophies, and it seems as though the rest of the league is catching up. But one thing is for sure, the most successful teams will be one step ahead at all times.

'09-'10 Preseason NCAA Player Rankings: Power Forwards

Today, we discuss part four of five of the 2009-10 Preseason Player Rankings. These rankings are centered around the top power forwards in the nation going into next season.

1. Patrick Patterson

The decision by Patterson to return to Kentucky for his junior year was a universal shock to the college basketball world.

Patterson has all the physical talents to make it in the NBA and has a mature mental approach to the game and to life, so him returning surprised us all.

Patterson will return to a Wildcat team that brings in one of the best recruiting classes in NCAA history—if not the best. Patterson will be joined down low by freshmen Daniel Orton and DeMarcus Cousins, as well as transfer Matt Pilgrim.

Patterson, a Huntington, WV native, should post even better stats than his 17.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game last season.

You might wonder how that is possible if they are bringing in more talent to take shots away from Patterson that he could improve statistically. Patterson was routinely double and triple teamed last season because of the lack of a second perimeter threat to go along with Jodie Meeks. In this offense he should get more open shots and crash the boards against traditional power forwards instead of centers.

If Patterson improves on his jump shot and dribbling ability then he could become perhaps the best player in the country next season.

2. Luke Harangody

Built from the same mold as Tyler Hansborough, Harangody routinely gets overlooked when discussing the best players in college basketball, but he is one of the elite players across the country.

As a UK fan I saw Harangody tourch the Cats for 30 points in the NIT and he dominated all of the Big East with his rugged, nonstop type of game.

Harangody recorded 24 double-doubles last season, leading the Big East, and was named to several All-American teams.

Although he will most likely post better stats than Patrick Patterson next year, Harangody will be in for a long season as Notre Dame loses several top players and does not bring much in for next season.

3. Kyle Singler

Many people thought Singler was going to make the transition to superstar status last season but that just never panned out. He still did not have a killer instinct or the understanding of when to take over a game.

But Singler has a work ethic comparable to any NBA player which gives me confidence that he will work on areas of his game to become better.

Singler was already a superb three point shooter but if he can develop strength to battle in the post then he will become the best inside-outside power forward in the nation.

Singler returns to a Duke team that should be a major player yet again in the ACC next season. They return Elliot Williams along with Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith and they add Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee to their roster from high school.

4. Craig Brackins

Brackins flew under the radar for the most part last season because he played in the same league as Blake Griffin, Damion James, and Cole Aldrich. But don't let his secretive game fool you; he can play.

Brackins averaged over 20 points and nine rebounds per game last season in the Big 12 playing against NBA-type talent every game. He was the only major threat on his Iowa State team and was still able to record 15 double-doubles last season, including an unbelievable 42 point, 15 rebound performance against Kansas.

The only reason Brackins is not a spot or two higher is because his team is routinely terrible and that will continue next season. Unless there is drastic improvements do not expect to see them in the NCAA Tournament any time soon.

5. Matt Howard

Howard was one of the top mid major players in the nation last season for Butler. Howard is a force in the paint as well as being able to hit the mid-range jump shot.

Butler was again successful in due part to Howard's success on the block. He is young but knows how to play the game—as evident by his averages of over 14 points and seven rebounds per game.

Next season Butler might be a preseason top 10 team if they get the respect they deserve so look out for Howard to explode onto the national scene.

The 2009 NBA Draft Lottery Set and Potential Picks

The 2009 NBA Draft Lottery occurred May 19 in Secaucus, New Jersey.

The Los Angeles Clippers won their third lottery in team history, and their first since 1998—when they drafted eventual bust Michael Olowokandi.

We will break down the lottery 1-14 and discuss who they should choose and other possible options.

1. Los Angeles Clippers—Blake Griffin

The Clippers blew their last chance at No. 1 and will most likely have better luck this time around. Blake Griffin, last season's NCAA National Player of the Year, appears to be the only logical choice.

Griffin recorded 30 double-doubles last season and led Oklahoma deep into the NCAA Tournament in his sophomore season.

2. Memphis Grizzlies—Hasheem Thabeet

Desperately in need of size, Memphis appears ready to draft the biggest player in the entire field. Hasheem Thabeet, the mammoth 7'3" center out of UCONN, is just the intimidating player Memphis needs to solidify their young front court.

Thabeet could team with Mike Conley, OJ Mayo, and Rudy Gay to form a pretty solid quartet of young studs for years to come in Memphis.

Another possible selection in this position is Spanish guard Ricky Rubio. Rubio is the eighteen year old sensation that I wrote about on May 15.

He is probably the second best prospect in this draft class, but the fact that Memphis has already invested their future in second-year pro Mike Conley gives me the feeling that Rubio will stay on the board.

3. Oklahoma City Thunder—Ricky Rubio

Rubio would fill the biggest hole in the Thunder lineup if picked at No. 3. The Thunder lack a legitimate play making point guard and that is Rubio's specialty. Rookie Russell Westbrook played out of position at the point last season but was sufficient.

Rubio is wise beyond his years and will only get better as he reaches his 20's and 30's.

The Thunder could also select a big man to solidify their post for a decade. Nick Collison led the team in rebounding at only 6.9 per game and a player like Arizona's Jordan Hill could help out on the glass.

Hill is long and athletic and has a ton of potential on both ends. Hill finishes tough at the rim and would bring a much needed attitude to the weak-minded Thunder squad.

4. Sacramento Kings—DeMar DeRozan

DeRozan was phenomenal in his lone season for USC last year. He is uber-athletic and has a sophisticated array of offensive moves for someone of his age. Derozan would bring much needed versatility to a Kings roster lacking in a player with an overall skill set.

Kevin Martin can score but not rebound, pass, or play defense. Spencer Hawes can rebound but not shoot, dribble, or play above the rim. Beno Udrih can pass but not create his own shot, defend, or shoot the deep ball.

DeRozan is a skilled shooter and can get to the rim at will and has the athleticism necessary to pick up defensive skills quickly.

Another potential pick by the Kings would be Tyreke Evans to bring a combo guard capable of taking scoring pressure off of Martin.

5. Washington Wizards—Jordan Hill

Jordan Hill is the third best big man in the 2009 draft class and, seeing as the Wizards desperately need a big man to complement the defensive pressure of Brendan Haywood, he would be the safest option.

Although James Harden and Tyreke Evans may have more NBA-ready games than Hill, they would not fill a need in the Wizards' lineup that Jordan Hill would.

The only other possible selection here would be James Johnson of Wake Forest, but teams do not usually reach for unproven American players like Johnson.

6. Minnesota Timberwolves—Brandon Jennings

To say it simply, Sebastian Telfair is not a good enough point guard to lead the Timberwolves out of the cellar of the Western Conference.

Adding an exciting playmaker like Brandon Jennings would bring a much needed perimeter threat to this post-oriented offense that features All-Star Al Jefferson and rookie Kevin Love.

Another possible selection would be Arizona State swing man James Harden, but he possibly could get lost in the shuffle with Mike Miller and Ryan Gomes

7. Golden State Warriors—Tyreke Evans

The Golden State Warriors need a point guard more than any team in the lottery, aside from Oklahoma City, and Tyreke Evans proved the doubters wrong last season at Memphis by taking kindly to the point guard role at Memphis.

Many people think Evans cannot be a traditional point guard, and in Golden State's high-tech offense that is just fine. Teaming Evans with players like Monte Ellis, Stephen Jackson, and Jamal Crawford would give the Warriors yet another high-level guard.

The Warriors also need a post presence desperately to go along with offensive allergic Andris Biedrens and Ronny Turiaf.

Because of this need, they may reach for an offensive big man like DeJaun Blair, who has proven he can handle the grind of a long season without injury and has gone up against perhaps the best defensive player in college history and done surprisingly well (Hasheem Thabeet).

8. New York Knicks—James Harden

Harden will fall farther past his skill level than anyone in the lottery. Harden may be the fourth most talented player in the entire class, but his skill set does not translate to many teams.

Harden would bring the Knicks a point forward-type player who can make plays from around the three point line and inside the paint.

Harden would be able to feed post players as well as three point threats like Al Harrington and Quentin Richardson.

The Knicks could also potentially draft Stephen Curry because they lack a deadly shooter and a big guard.

9. Toronto Raptors—Jrue Holliday

The Raptors actually have less weaknesses than most of the teams in the lottery, but the weaknesses they do have are large. The biggest need for the Raptors is a lock down perimeter defender...something Holliday is known for.

Holliday can help out fragile Jose Calderon at the point as well as guarding one of the many great shooting guards in the Eastern Conference night-in and night-out.

The Raptors could also pursue Gerald Henderson of Duke because he is an unbelievably athletic wing, something the Raptors have not had since their Vince Carter days, AKA "The Dark Days."

10. Milwaukee Bucks—DeJaun Blair

DeJaun Blair would give the Bucks one of the premiere front courts in the NBA over night. They already have the multi-dimensional Charlie Villanueva and steady go-to man Andrew Bogut in the paint, and adding Blair would give them length and size across their front court.

Blair could team with Bogut to get double-doubles every night for years to come and Ramon Sessions and Luke Ridnour are both spectacular passers who can give them the ball in positions to score.

The Bucks could also select Gerald Henderson to solidify the shooting guard/small forward position if—and when—Michael Redd gets injured again.

11. New Jersey Nets—Gerald Henderson

This could be one of the reaches of the lottery because this class is thin in shooting guard, but the Nets desperately need one.

Vince Carter is more of a small forward and is aging at an incredible rate while Devin Harris and Brooke Lopez solidify the front and back courts.

Henderson could team with Vince Carter to form a pretty dynamic duo of athleticism and length in New Jersey for a couple of seasons.

The Nets could also draft James Johnson if they feel Yi Jianlian cannot be effective at power forward, which I think he can eventually.

12. Charlotte Bobcats—James Johnson

James Johnson will be considered by many teams leading up to Charlotte, but I think the Bobcats will be the team to pull the trigger on the former Demon Deacon.

The Bobcats need an athletic, bouncy player to compliment the bruising style of Emeka Okafor at the center position. Johnson could run up and down the court with Raymond Felton and Gerald Wallace to make the Bobcats a much better offensive team right away.

13. Indiana Pacers—Eric Maynor

The Pacers found a good point guard option last season in TJ Ford, but Ford may not be the option of the future for Indy. Even if he is, Maynor has the size and diversity to play as a shooting guard with a point guard's role.

Ford and Maynor could give Indiana an instant two-man fast break and one of the quickest backcourts in the NBA.

Another player that could be considered at the No. 13 pick is Stephen Curry because Danny Granger is beginning to reach elite status, and the Pacers are going to need a player who can run up and down the court and hit transition buckets to make teams pay for paying too much attention to Granger.

14. Phoenix Suns—Stephen Curry

This is a great value pick for Phoenix at this point. Curry can play both the point guard and shooting guard positions and is one of the best three point shooters in NCAA history.

Steve Nash is not getting any younger so Curry could potentially start his career off the ball, learn the offense, and help Leondro Barbosa run the point once Nash leaves or retires.

Curry would make Amare Stoudemire more effective because teams would not be able to double down on him in fear of leaving a player with Curry's jump shot open.

The Suns would also consider point guards like Ty Lawson and Jonny Flynn to come in and take over the reigns from Steve Nash when he hangs up his shoes.

John Wall Commits, Makes Wildcats a Contender

With the announcement of prep superstar John Wall committing to the University of Kentucky, the Wildcats have reeled in their fourth five-star recruit and have two four-star recruits coming in as well.

Coach John Calipari has already displayed his second-to-none recruiting style and now has to finish the job by winning and winning big.

Across the Internet Tuesday morning, media members have been crowning this Kentucky recruiting class as the best of all-time and one of the best collection of talents in sports' history.

Calipari has a tough job ahead of him. Not in the sense that he needs to find players to step up, because that won't be a problem. Calipari is going to have trouble containing all these players to their designed roles because of the superstar tags each of them are coming in with.

Don't get me wrong, as a member of the Big Blue Nation, I strongly hope Calipari can handle the pressure and make this work, that is why he became the highest paid coach in college basketball history, but the odds are lower than one might think.

The great Michigan "Fab Five" of the early 90s proved to be a bust. Five players ranked in the top 100 nationally, three of which were top 10 talents, that could not win a national title in two seasons seasons together.

But unlike the Michigan "Fab Five", this team returns stellar players as well. Perhaps two of the top 10 returning players in the nation next season will be wearing Kentucky blue if Jodie Meeks joins Patrick Patterson in Lexington.

The Michigan team had relatively no leadership returning and started five freshmen, something this UK squad will not do once.

It is hard to deny Kentucky's immediate place among the top five nationally after a signing of John Wall's caliber. Many experts believe he is better at this stage of his career than both Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans, two superstar point guards under Calipari at Memphis.

The Wall commitment makes Kentucky the favorite to win the national title and gives them their top recruit in school history. Wall will be the best point guard to ever step foot in Lexington, even better than current Boston Celtics star Rajon Rondo.

Wall has the potential to score 20 points every game and dish out 10+ assists on any given night.

This UK team will be the deepest team in America, as well. Ramon Harris, a senior, was a starter on last season's Wildcat team and may be the worst player on the upcoming team. That is not a slight to him at all, he's a lock down defender and a great leader, but a testament to what may happen next season.

I do believe that UK will be a top five team throughout all of next season, but some fans are taking this too far.

Just remember that this will be a relatively young team, and with that should come reasonable expectations.

LeBron vs. Kobe: A Debate to End All Debates

When breaking down the statistics of both LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, I found out what everyone else already knew.

These two guys are neck and neck.

What I'm trying to figure out is who is really the better all around player here. I don't want to just look at the overall scoring numbers (LeBron) or free throw and three point percentage numbers (Kobe).

I want to know if I put these two guys through the ringer who would come out on top.

I am going to argue from both sides and then give my final analysis. I feel it's the best way—the only way—to decide who is the best player in the NBA.

LeBron James

James has accomplished more in his first six NBA seasons than almost any player in league history.

Only one other player has scored 12,000-plus points, corralled 3,000=pluse rebounds, and dished out 3,000-plus assists in their first six full NBA seasons in NBA history—Oscar Robertson.

James is the only player to average a minimum of 27.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game in his first six NBA seasons in NBA history. Jordan never did it, neither did Bird, Magic, or even Kobe.

James has even gotten the better of Kobe in their eleven career meetings. James has won six of their meetings to Kobe's five, LeBron has outscored, out rebounded, out assisted, and out shot Bryant from long range in their meetings.

Think about it—it took James 12 seasons to win his first and only Most Valuable Player award while it took James just six seasons.

It has always been said that Bryant still has the clutch factor on James, I mean, Kobe is deadly in the fourth quarter, right?

Well yes, but James actually outscored Kobe in the fourth quarter of games this season and averaged almost identical clutch points per 48 minutes.

In conclusion, it is hard to deny LeBron's vast improvement compared to Bryant's steady play. James makes his teammates better, leading more players to being named to their first all-star game than Bryant has, and finished ahead of James in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Kobe Bryant

Ok, LeBron is a beast, no doubt. James however, is on another level. Bryant can score at will in a variety of ways, while LeBron is still not a long range threat.

When looking at who is the better overall player you have to look at team success right? I mean Magic Johnson was widely considered better than Larry Bird due in most part to his five championship rings compared to Bird's two.

If you look at it that way there, is no comparison. Bryant has three rings and a career winning percentage of 65.6 percent while James has not won an NBA title and has only won 58.5 percent of his games.

Byrant is a threat from all over the court, while James can only hurt you consistently from eighteen feet in. James forces shots more than Bryant and turns the ball over more, too.

When you take a close look you also notice that Bryant shot 5 percent better from the line in the fourth quarter of regular season games, one of the most important areas of a game is late-game foul shooting.

Bryant has been a proven commodity in all parts of his game for well over a decade now, while James is still learning, meaning he still does not grasp all areas of the game necessary to completely dominate one.

So Who Is It?

Well if I had to choose who the best player in the NBA was right now I would have to say...LeBron James.

James has proven to be unstoppable. He has put his teams on his back and carried them to victories more so than Bryant (see 2007 Eastern Conference Finals—Cavs vs. Pistons) and has been more consistent in the playoffs of late, scoring at least 20 points in every 2009 playoff game while Bryant has failed to reach 20 points in three games already.

James helps his teams improve more than Bryant does. The winning percentage for the Cavaliers in the James's tenure as compared to the five seasons preceding his arrival has risen 21.4 percent, while the winning percentage of Bryant's Lakers has risen by only 12.9 percent.

In my opinion this is not even that close. James has better numbers across almost every statistical category.

In clutch situations—fourth quarter or overtime, less than five minutes left, neither team ahead by more than five points—Bryant actually has a higher field goal percentage and three-point percentage as well as more rebounds and assists per 48 minutes.

James is a superior slasher, finisher, and defender as well as being stronger and more athletic.Bryant may have a killer instinct, but James has a mean streak of his own.

When all is said and done, LeBron James may go down as a better NBA basketball player than Kobe Bryant, but who knows, these guys are neck and neck.

'09-'10 Preseason NCAA Player Rankings: Small Forwards

Today we discuss part three of five of the '09-'10 Preseason Player Rankings. These rankings are centered around the top small forwards in the nation going into next season.

1. Al-Farouq Aminu

Aminu could have been classified as a small forward or a power forward because of his skill which is a testament to his versatility as a basketball player.

Aminu was one of the top freshmen in the nation last year and at 6'9" he has the potential to improve his game to become one of the top players in the country his sophomore year.

Aminu is coming off a freshman campaign that saw him average 12.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. His rebounding numbers were the best in the nation among freshman small forwards.

He was third in scoring on a Wake Forest team that finished 24-7, including spending time at No. 1 in the country.

Aminu returns to a Wake Forest team that has been ravished by NBA entries. Both James Johnson and Jeff Teague have entered their names into the 2009 NBA Draft, with only Teague eligible to return.

If Teague returns Wake Forest immediately becomes a preseason top 20 team because of their balance offensively, athleticism, and length defensively.

2. James Anderson

As a shooting guard in a small forwards body, James Anderson was one of the premiere scoring forwards in the country last season. He averaged 18.9 points for the season including 14 games of 20+ points.

Anderson improved from the previous year more than any small forward in the country. Anderson improved on his scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, blocks, field goal percentage, and three point percentage.

These improvements lead me to believe that Anderson is again working to improve on his weak areas—dribbling and defense—to become the best player he can be.

Anderson will once again be the go-to-player on an Oklahoma State team that will feature a freshman point guard, Raymond Penn, and will include many other young contributors.

3. Raymar Morgan

This Canton, Ohio native lead his Michigan State Spartan team all the way to the National Title game last season because of his leadership and determination.

Despite suffering a broken nose earlier in the season, Morgan played through it and recorded two double-doubles in the NCAA Tournament before falling short to North Carolina.

Morgan took a step back statistically last season from his first two, partially because his season was decimated by injury.

Morgan returns to school for his senior season and will be perhaps the best player on a preseason top five team.

His athleticism and potential at the next level lead me to believe that he will have a career year for the Spartans, the premiere team in the Big Ten next season.

4. Devin Ebanks

Ebanks, like Aminu, could have been considered both a small forward or a power forward in these rankings because of his wide set of skills.

Ebanks is a bruiser in the post as well as swift with the ball and calm with it in his hands.

Last season for West Virginia Ebanks averaged 10.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, very well rounded for a freshman in the Big East.

Ebanks had some of his best games against top competition, which leads me to believe that with another year of maturity and mental growth Ebanks could have those type of games against all competition.

Next season West Virginia will be loaded and Ebanks will be one of the reasons they are considered a top 10 preseason team.

The New York native will be the top interior and outside force for the Mountaineers next season.

5. Robbie Hummel

Last season, Robbie Hummel was one of the most complete basketball players in the country regardless of class.

But as only a sophomore he displayed the uncanny ability of always making the right decision despite the situation.

This beyond-his-years maturity has led Hummel to having an already stellar all around game and gives me the feeling that he will blossom in his junior year.

Hummel needs to improve on his post game and defensive ability in order to take the next step in this upcoming season.

But Hummel will be one of the integral pieces on a stacked Purdue team next year. A team that has a chance to go to the Final Four because of players like Hummel.

Ricky Rubio: A Spanish Sensation

Ricky Rubio is the best player in the world that you don't know about, but why would you?

He lives in Spain, he's white, he plays professional basketball and, Oh, did I mention he's eighteen?

Rubio, a 6'3'' point guard, has been playing basketball for DVK Joventut of the Euro Premiere League, perhaps the second best league in the world, four seasons now.

In 2008, at seventeen, Rubio averaged 10.0 points, 3.9 assists, and 3.2 rebounds a game and helped his Spanish club win the Spanish National Cup. He has been compared to a young Pete Maravich because of his floppy socks and creativity on the floor.

I know what you're thinking.

"This kid is playing in Spain against nonathletic, European white guys."

Your assumption is false.

Rubio competed against the best players from around the world in the 2008 Olympics. Rubio, at seventeen, played like a savvy veteran against Chris Paul, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant.

He even got the start against the U.S. in the Olympic Finals, becoming the youngest player to ever start an Olympic Finals.

"He's [Rubio] played awesome," said Kobe Bryant during the Games. "He single alone changed the course of some games."

He even outshined USA-born Brandon Jennings, a sure-fire lottery pick in this year's draft, in a Euro game earlier this year.

He's been dueling it out with Europe's best for four seasons now and his success has led him to being a European sensation.

He will most likely bring his game westward next fall, as he has entered his name in the 2009 NBA Draft.

The NBA might not be ready for this lanky Spanish kid with the quiet demeanor, but then again Rubio may not be ready for the competition the NBA offers.

But it's okay, he's only eighteen.

The Origin of the "Role Player" in the NBA

A role player—defined as an athlete who plays mainly in specific situations—has always been a valued member of successful NBA teams.

The great Red Auerbach essentially created the position.

During a thirteen year stretch—spanning from '56-'69—that saw the Boston Celtics win eleven NBA Championships, most under Auerbach, the Celtics had at least one bench player score 10 points in 12 of the 13 seasons.

In the early days of the Association though, many of these players came far and few between—but each great team had them.

The Celtics had Sam and K.C. Jones, as well as Frank Ramsey. The Cincinnati Royals had Bob Boozer and Adrian Smtih. The San Francisco Warriors had a young Nate Thurmond and Al Attles.

But over the past two decades role players have started to become necessity for every organization.

The Spurs in the mid-'90's made the role player cool again with the likes of Sean Elliot, Will Perdue, Malik Rose, and even Manu Ginobili. Role players are one of the reasons they have won four titles in a nine year span.

Every team knows you must have a bench to get it done in this league but only a few understand how to put role players in a situation to succeed.

The 2008 Celtics surrounded big-named acquisitions like Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen with low-key additions like Eddie House, Tony Allen, and PJ Brown.

But what makes a good role player?

Is it experience? Definitely.

Is it a team-first mentality? It's a must.

Is it a desperate hunger for winning? No doubt.

A great role player must have all three of these attributes to be a full asset to his team—but it's hard to create a role player.

For example, the 2004 Los Angeles Lakers featured future Hall of Fame legends Gary Payton and Karl Malone. Each of them had experience and desperately wanted their first NBA title, but did not have the team-first mindset after a decade each of being the leading face of their respective franchises.

These players were starters for L.A., even though they arrived in Hollywood primarily as role-type players.

Role players cannot be bought for millions of dollars.

Steve Kerr made less than $700,000 for the '98 Bulls title team. Robert Horry made $1.8 mil for the '05 Spurs title team. And Leon Powe made $650,000 for Boston's title team last season.

There will probably be a day in the future when even role players will cost $5-10 million a year, but until then, we'll stay with the guys who do the dirty work and make the big plays for less money.

Available Role Players

A few role players will be available through free agency this summer.

Chris "Birdman" Anderson of the Denver Nuggets has proven via the playoffs that someone could very well use his services—6.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks in the 2009 playoffs.

He is definitely a high-energy guy who brings the crowd to its feet numerous times a game. He blocks shots and makes the highlight reel with his dunks.

Jazz specialist Kyle Korver could definitely bring a team much needed three point shooting. Korver has a very high basketball IQ and routinely hits tough shots.

Lastly, Eddie House of the defending NBA Champion Boston Celtics. House shoots the ball very well from far away and can bring a desperate team a very serviceable backup point guard.

House is cost-effective as well—costing less than $2 million.

'09-'10 Preseason Player Rankings: Shooting Guards

Today we discuss part two of five of the '09-'10 Preseason Player Rankings. These rankings are centered around the top shooting guards in the nation going into next season.

1. Jodie Meeks

Meeks is coming off one of the most incredible scoring seasons in SEC history, averaging 23.7 for the season. Meeks set a school record by dropping 54 points on Tennessee and had games of 46, 45, and 39 to go along with it.

Meeks, a Norcross, Georgia native, still has his name in the NBA Draft but all indications point to a return to Lexington and a year to work with John Calipari, who has a track record for putting guards in the NBA—Chris Douglas-Roberts, Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans.

Meeks is easily the most offensively savvy shooting guard in the country but he still needs to improve on his ball handling and his passing to be a legitimate NBA prospect. Calipari has already stated Meeks could become a top 20 pick with only one year under his tutelage.

As stated earlier, Meeks can score points in bunches. He had at least 10 points in 35 of 36 games and had 22 games of 20+ points.

Meeks will be surrounded by at least one 5-star point guard (Eric Bledsoe) next season and may be joined by another (John Wall) if things work out as planned. That will help Meeks get open shots because they too are scoring threats and are prolific passers.

2. Willie Warren

Perhaps no freshman in the country was as impressive last season as Oklahoma guard Willie Warren. Warren came into the college ranks as a head case with an attitude problem—similar to former USC star OJ Mayo.

Warren made an almost flawless transition to the point guard position after being a shooting guard all through high school. Many people believed his point production would suffer if he had to give up shots but he simply improved his shot selection and cut down on his turnovers.

Warren steadily progressed as the season went on, which gives me the impression that with a full off-season to improve, he will improve even more drastically.

Oklahoma may struggle a bit next year though with the losses of National Player of the Year Blake Griffin, Taylor Griffin, and Austin Johnson. Keith "Tiny" Gallon and Tony Crocker will be in uniform to help detract attention from Warren but it may be difficult to get open looks.

3. E'Twaun Moore

E'Twaun Moore is one of those players who seems like he has been in college for seven seasons—when in reality he has only played two years.

Moore is a throwback type player. He is tall and long yet his strengths are dribbling and passing. He has a European-type game which makes him a difficult match up.

One asset for Moore is that he plays with many other very smart players such as Robbie Hummel and Chris Kramer. They allow him to get open shots by spreading the floor and often convert on his passes to help his statistics.

Moore is still learning to play with a 'mean streak' which will enable him to play more aggressive, which is what his body should be used for. Moore is a difficult match up for anyone in the Big Ten and should be perhaps the best player in the league next season.

4. Manny Harris

In the same mold as NBA superstar Brandon Roy, Harris has tremendous size and length for a shooting guard. Standing at 6'5'' he is able to shoot over his defender at all points on the floor with relative ease. Harris combines a smooth stroke with a strong handle which makes him a nightmare to defend around the perimeter.

Harris is coming off a season that saw him score 16.9 points and 6.8 rebounds. Harris worked all last off-season on his rebounding and he improved on his rebounding by almost 3.0 rebounds—which is an amazing improvement for one season.

Harris combines his offensive game with a pretty solid defensive game, averaging 1.2 steals in an almost strictly zone defense under John Beilein. Harris will once again be the focal point for his offense next season with an improved Michigan team.

5. Jon Scheyer

You may not notice Jon Scheyer because Duke is always loaded at the guard position. Gerald Henderson, Greg Paulus, and Nolan Smith all made significant contributions throughout the year and Elliot Williams came on strong late.

Next season Scheyer will only have to compete with Elliot Williams at shooting guard and will be able to play some minutes at the point as well. Scheyer is a very versatile player for his size and athletic ability because he is one of the most fundamentally sound players in the country.

Scheyer is also next in the long line of hated white players at Duke. Following in the footsteps of Christian "frickin" Laettner, Bobby Hurley, Steve Wojohowski, J.J. Redick, and Greg Paulus. Scheyer is deadly from the three point line and is cool under pressure—hitting many clutch shots over his career.

He may not put up the most phenomenal numbers but he may be the best guard on one of the best teams in the nation next year.

Calipari: Looking toward the Future of Kentucky Basketball

When John Calipari was first brought on as the University of Kentucky men's basketball coach, he said said numerous times that he is "day by day."

"If you want something to happen in a year, do not hire me," he once said.

But for the first time since his hiring on April 1, Calipari talked about next year.

Calipari addressed the media on numerous topics looking forward to the upcoming season. A season that already has Cats fans anxious because of the sudden high expectations.

He would not say what his expectations for this team going into next season are, other than it will be a learning process. "Then by March [we] are playing [our] best basketball."

Calipari expects to be playing great basketball in March, partially because of the announcement that Patrick Patterson will be returning to Kentucky for his junior season.

"I'm excited about [Patrick returning]," Calipari explained, "I wanted him to know that he is coming back for himself and to help the university."

Coach Calipari also detailed how surprised he was with Patterson and some of the things he could do on the basketball floor that he was not aware of.

"One of the things was that I didn't realize how fast [Patrick] was," Calipari smiled, "He also shoots the ball better than I thought, and handles it and passes it better than I thought."

Another crucial topic of discussion was the incoming recruits. Eric Bledsoe will play a very crucial role on a team in desperate need of a point guard and playmaking ability.

"When I recruit players, I want to make sure that they play big and are big," said Calipari. "If a guy is 6'4" and plays 6'2", then he is not big. If a guy is 6'0" and plays 6'5", then he is big...Eric is probably 6'1", maybe, but he plays big. He is fast and very physically strong and tough. He has great vision on the court, and in this offense, you have to be able to react."

Another freshman who has to step up under Calipari is Daniel Orton. Orton, an Oklahoma native, appears ready to make the jump to the college game alongside Patterson and fellow freshman DeMarcus Cousins.

"Daniel Orton is going to be terrific, because he has great size, really long arms and he is skilled. You can play him inside, or outside and he is a terrific passer," Calipari noted. "He also has the skills that if you want to play two big guys you can. There is DeMarcus [Cousins] that you can play with him and together."

There is no question that Kentucky is going to be a very good team under Calipari, but Coach Cal has warned the media numerous times already that this is a step-by-step process that will take time.

"But when we get it right, you notice we're No. 1 in the country, we're No. 1 seeds, we're playing in Final Fours when you get it right."

Extra News and Notes

The schedule situation was brought up today and Calipari explained it to the media that there is still two games to schedule, but the rest is pretty much done. He said they got a call from Texas for a Houston-site game. Also looking at Cincinnati or a Nashville-site game.

He also talked about wanting Midnight Madness in Commonwealth Stadium (Kentucky football stadium). Calipari said it would be great to get 70,000 people to come and have Ashley Judd and Justin Timberlake there. He said the biggest issue would be predicting the weather in the middle of October.

'09-'10 Preseason Player Rankings: Point Guards

The madness of March has come and gone as another season is in the books. But as one season ends, the next begins, starting with naming the best remaining players in the nation and who might lead their team to the promise land.

Today marks the beginning of the new "Preseason Player Rankings" series. Here is a rundown of the top five point guards who already announced their intentions of returning to their respective school.

1. Sherron Collins

Collins had a break out sophomore season after being used mainly as a spark plug on the national title-winning 2008 Jayhawk team.

Collins improved in every single aspect of his game and statistically more than double most of his numbers.

His 18.9 points along with 5.0 assists last season makes him a dual-threat lead guard with the ability to do many different things on the basketball court. Collins, 5'11" 200 lbs., is a superb slasher, using his unparalleled strength to muscle his way to the basket, and makes very crisp passes.

Scoring 10+ points in 33 of 35 games this season, consistency is what sets Collins apart from the rest of the point guards across the nation.

With all the pieces returning for the Jayhawks next season, all 13 scholarship players returning, it seems as though Collins will have plenty of opportunities to showcase his skills.

2. Jeff Teague *

Perhaps no one showed more maturity and improvement last season than Jeff Teague.

The Second-Team All-American stepped up his scoring by 4.9 points (13.9 - 18.8), his field goal shooting by 5.1% (.434 - .485), and his three point shooting by 4.6% (.395 - .441).

Teague, like Collins, showed amazing consistency last season for Wake Forest. He scored in double figures in all 31 games that he played, though he did not consistently take care of the basketball.

These drastic improvements show me the kind of dedication it takes to take your game to the next level from one year to the next. Teague demonstartes that he knows how to improve on his game during the off season, so I expect even more improvements.

Teague also has Al Farouq-Aminu returning to help shoulder some of the responsibility of the Demon Deacons team. This will be a dangerous 1-2 combo in the ACC and will lead to very good press for Teague in particular.

3. Kalin Lucas

Lucas firmly established himself as a blossoming superstar throughout Michigan State's memorable run to the national title game last season.

Lucas averaged 14.3 points and 5.7 assists per game in his six tournament games, playing beyond his years in many key situations, including a game-winning jumper to beat Sherron Collins and Kansas in the Sweet 16.

Lucas was pretty solid in the regular season too. He actually averaged more points with 14.8, while averaging 4.2 assists prior to the NCAA tournament.

Lucas will be surrounded by a great core of players who all participated in last season's finals run. Durrell Summers and Raymar Morgan both will be returning for another season and will help contribute to the development of the young point guard.

Lucas goes into 2009-2010 with all the tools to become an elite guard. He has the speed, athleticism, and the uncanny ability to make the right decision in every situation. With a developed jump shot there is no reason why Lucas can not be sitting atop this list.

4. John Wall

Ok, I know. 'Wall has not even played in a college game yet so how could I have him as a top 5 point guard?'.

Well, he is just that good.

Wall, a 6'4" Raleigh, North Carolina native, is considered by most recruiting experts as the consensus number one overall prep player in America.

To go along with mind-boggling speed, Wall has a vicious crossover and Rajon Rondo-like rebounding abilities. Wall is able to get into the lane at will and has done it against the best players in the world (Nike Hoop Summit).

It is being reported that he has narrowed his school list down to Kentucky or Miami, although I firmly believe Duke and North Carolina are still in the mix. If he chooses Kentucky it appears all the necessary pieces to help him succeed and show off his skills are already in order.

Wall participated in the 2009 Jordan Brand Classic, and competed for the amateur Team USA team within the past three months.

5. Toney Douglas

Like Kalin Lucas, who was mentioned earlier, Douglas became a household name after the regular season with dominating performances in the ACC Tournament and NCAA tournament.

Douglas is a natural scorer, averaging 21.5 points last season, and has the size, 6'2', to compete with any guard in the country.

Douglas proved he is legit against some of the best teams in the country last year.

In three meetings against Duke, Douglass tallied 18, 27, and 28 points. In two meetings against North Carolina he dominated with 32 and 27 points.

Next season with five-star recruit Michael Snaer helping with the scoring load, Douglas can improve upon his point guard skills and has a chance to be considered as an elite player, not just an elite scorer.

*Assuming he returns to school

Danny Granger Wins Most Improved Player

Indiana Pacers star Danny Granger has won the Kia Most Improved Player Award, becoming the third Pacer to win the award, and the first since Jermaine O'Neal in 2002.

Granger, a fourth year pro out of New Mexico, averaged career highs in points (25.8), assists (2.7), and minutes (36.2) for the 36-46 Pacers.

The Kia Most Improved Player Award annually goes to the player who best displays noticeable improvement in areas of their game.

Granger became the first player in Pacer history to record a season average of 25.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 85 percent from the free throw line.

Granger broke numerous single-game franchise records, including becoming the only player in the organization's history to make a minimum of 17 consecutive free throws in a game (Dec. 17, 2008).

Granger beat out New Jersey Nets guard Devin Harris and Oklahoma City Thunder winger Kevin Durant for the 2009 honor.

Celtics Can Win...Even without Kevin Garnett

Since arriving in Boston in late July 2007, Kevin Garnett has been the face of a resurrected franchise and the leader of one of the most storied organizations in all of sports.

Garnett was the vocal and emotional backbone of the Celtics during their historic playoff run last season and was guiding them to a similar fate this season...until a March 26 knee injury put him on the mend for the remainder of the year.

Many people wrote the Celtics off following the loss of their fallen commander. Bulls-without-Garnett">They were called an average team without him, a team that could not even get out of the first round. Even die hard C's fans like myself started to believe this pessimism when Bill Simmons began to wave the white flag BEFORE THE PLAYOFFS EVEN STARTED.

But a funny thing often happens to emotionally stingy teams when faced with powerful adversity like this. They overcome it.

Since the departure of KG, numerous so-called "role players" have stepped up to fill the void of tge 6'11" superstar.

Rajon Rondo has blossomed from a quirky point guard to one of the premier play-callers in the NBA.

Glen Davis is averaging more than 15 points per game since Garnett went down and is coming off the biggest shot of his life—a game-winner last night vs. Orlando.

Kendrick Perkins has flourished as the go-to big man in the paint for the Celtics. He is averaging a double-double in the playoffs, including two double-digit rebound games against the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Dwight Howard.

Put growing youngsters like these around shining, established superstars like Paul Pierce and Ray Allen and you have yourself a darn good ball club.

The key to the whole equation is that it's not only the glue guys who have accepted their roles on this team. Pierce and Allen still have the team mentality and the drive to become champions that willed them to the title last season.

Pierce still takes over fourth quarters and has embraced giving it his all on the defensive end.

Allen has learned not to force shots and has become the new "Mr. Big Shot" with his last-second heroics.

But simply having the individual pieces to a championship will not win you one, you need chemistry—enough chemistry to know that you're fighting for the same goal as your teammate diving for the loose ball on the other side of the court.

That is something that was never in question when the Big Ticket was roaming the middle, and with this collection of guys, it still isn't.

Patrick Patterson to return to Wildcats

Kentucky Wildcats sophomore forward Patrick Patterson announced today that he is returning for his junior season after taking his name out of the NBA Draft.

Patterson, a 6'9" Huntington, West Virginia native, returns following a season that saw him average a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game. Patterson also ranked near the top of Division I with a .603 field goal percentage.

Patterson made his decision late last week and decided to come back because of three reasons.

"An opportunity to get a degree next year. It also means a lot for me to come back and get the chance to play for Kentucky. I also like Coach Calipari’s offense and playing for him and [the thought of] him helping me improve and get better," the All-SEC big man said.

Many believed Patterson would remain in the draft if he were a guaranteed first-round pick, although he was told by scouts he would have been had he kept his name available. "Anywhere from 14, 15 to 20, guaranteed first round.”

Patterson returns to a team that has the potential to reach its first Final Four since 1998, or at least its first Elite Eight in five seasons.

"Looking at the team we could possibly have next year, with all the people we have coming in, all the weapons we have coming in that helped a lot. With the caliber of the team we could have next year and competing for a national title hopefully."

John Calipari's reputation for developing players for the NBA also played an integral role in Patterson's decision to come back.

"It helped a lot. I looked at all the players he sent [to the NBA] back in Memphis, [Chris] Dorsey, [Chris Douglas] Roberts, Derek Rose, just everybody who he’s helped. I know playing for Coach Calipari I will progress.”

With the possibility of Jodie Meeks returning for his senior season, along with prep target John Wall, Patterson's decision makes Kentucky the legitimate preseason favorite in the Southeastern Conference as well as a front-runner for the top team in the country.

"Hopefully [Kentucky can] be a top contender and win a national championship."
