Florida Gators-Cincinnati Bearcats: The 2010 Sugar Bowl Is a Thriller

Boring.

Yes, the 2010 Sugar Bowl has the Florida Gators facing the Cincinnati Bearcats. Surely this game will have the masses asleep by the second quarter. Seriously, does anybody care about this game other than the Bearcats fans that rarely get this far in a season?

You can expect Florida not to show up for this game. If they fell asleep behind the wheel (no pun intended) in Atlanta, do you really think they'll come to New Orleans firing on all cylinders? Well, maybe since they downgraded from an eight cylinder down to a hybrid four.

What will be the tag line for this epic match up? "Urban Meyer faces his alma mater"? Or "Is this Brian Kelly's last game as Cincinnati's head coach"? Boy, this one gets your heart pumping, doesn't it?

OK, let's try to take this game seriously, and take a look at the season-end statistics for both teams.

Total Offense: Cincinnati is ranked No. 6, and Florida No. 12

Total Defense: Florida is ranked No. 4, and Cincinnati No. 48

Now granted, after the debacle in Atlanta, Florida's numbers may not be taken seriously, but Cincinnati being ranked No. 48 in total defense playing in the Big East?

Give me a break.

Well, Florida has a chance to end the season with one loss, so that's something to be proud of, especially after going through the entire season with the one word phrase "FINISH" as their motto.

Cincinnati has the chance to hand Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow their second loss in a row.

How pathetic is it when that is all that can be said about this Sugar Bowl game?

Wake me when the 2010 season starts.

Bobby Bowden: A Florida Gator Fan's Take on the Career of FSU's Coach

It's official: Coach Bobby Bowden will end his 34-year head coaching career on December 1, 2009.

It was inevitable that Coach Bowden would retire from Florida State University, but after the game against Florida this past weekend, there seemed to be a possibility that he would return for one more season.

Frankly, I feel he is being forced to retire, and that bothers me.

Conventional wisdom could lead some to believe that Bowden's time had come and gone. Many argue that he should have retired years ago when Jimbo Fisher was named the coach-in-waiting. Some may even go as far as to say he should have been fired when FSU started losing four or five games per year.

If you feel or agree with any of the above, then shame on you.

When Bobby Bowden left West Virginia to take the job at Florida State, the Seminoles had won just four games in the previous three seasons. After 34 years as the FSU head coach, the only losing season he ever had was his first in 1976.

His overall record at FSU: 309-91-4, pending NCAA review. Hopefully the NCAA will come to their senses and leave his record alone.

Now that it appears that it is all said and done, Coach Bowden is the second-winningest coach in NCAA history. He coached FSU to two national championships and 14 straight seasons of 10 or more victories, as well as 14 straight seasons finishing in the top five in the final AP poll.

I remember when I was younger and dumber, I used to take jabs at Coach Bowden and FSU for being an Independent or member of the ACC. That was my reason for their success; the Seminoles were not a member of a "real" football conference.

The ACC may not have been as tough as the SEC, but any team that can win its conference nine-straight times right after joining it is impressive. In fact, from 1992-2005, FSU won the ACC Championship a total of 12 times in 14 years.

Sure, FSU lost more games than usual the last five seasons. The last time the Seminoles has been to a BCS bowl game was during the 2005 season when they met Penn State in the Orange Bowl. The game was played on January 3, 2006.

I will always remember the FSU teams that Bobby Bowden coached. I will always remember the stars he coached: Deion Sanders, Charlie Ward, Warrick Dunn, Derrick Brooks, Peter Warrick, and Terrell Buckley.

I will always remember the post-game interviews, and most of all, I will always remember that grand-dad persona that prevented anyone from disliking him.

Dadgummit will always be a word in the college football dictionary.

Football will never be the same in the state of Florida. That is the thoughts and memories of a Florida Gators fan.

Thanks for the memories, Coach Bowden.

Tim Tebow Says Goodbye to Gator Nation Against FSU and Bobby Bowden

When it was all said and done, the Florida Gators defeated the Florida State Seminoles in The Swamp as most predicted. However, that story-line was the second most important of the day for the Gator Nation; by far it will always be remembered as the day Tim Tebow said goodbye to The Swamp.

As each Senior was introduced prior to the game, the 90,000+ people in the stands cheered and waited until the last player ran out of the tunnel to greet his coach and parents. Fittingly, No. 15 was the last name called, and when Tebow's name was announced, the crowd in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field roared like never heard before.

It was an appropriate tribute to the greatest Gator, and quite possibly the greatest college football player in the history of the NCAA.

When the game actually begun, the Gators were fired up and ready to do battle with their in-state rivals. In years past, Florida State was a big-time annual event for in-state bragging rights, but today it was simply a stop on the road to Atlanta and Pasadena.

The only difference with this game was it was Tebow's last in The Swamp.

Tebow's production was typical. He passed for 221 yards and three TDs going 17 of 21. He also rushed for 90 yards on 15 carries scoring two TDs. It also kept him in the running for this year's Heisman Trophy.

When Tebow walked off the field in the fourth quarter, he did it in his legendary unselfish manner. He was replaced by future starting QB John Brantley, and he stood on the sidelines cheering like the fans that were in the stands.

The week preceding today's game saw several tributes to Tebow. ESPN's College Gameday crew was on campus for the game, and of course they were there to pay homage to Tebow. Each tribute was nicely done, but none could capture what Tebow has meant to the University of Florida or the college football world.

Coach Urban Meyer was emotional during his weekly press conference this past Tuesday as he described how it was coaching and working with Tebow. It was more personal than professional for Meyer the past four years, and it has been refreshing to see a strong relationship between coach and player.

If Tebow was nervous or feeling meloncholy during the game, it didn't show. He led the Gator offense like he always did with the skill of an experienced Field Marshall. He passed, he ran, and he scrambled. When it was all said and done, he was victorious.

Even though the Gator fans celebrated the win, they also felt sorry that their beloved Tebow would never play football in The Swamp ever again. History had arrived, and it was bittersweet.

There are two games left for the Gators, and both have championship implications.

First is Alabama. Both the Gators and Crimson Tide are undefeated, ranked No. 1 and 2 respectively, but one will lose and one will go on to Pasadena for the National Championship.

No matter what happens in the coming weeks, the Gator Nation can fall back on the memories Tim Tebow provided. The book is almost over, but two chapters need to be written to complete the story.

Unfortunately, we can't skip to the end to see how it ends.

Why Was Tiger Woods Driving at 2:30 am the Morning After Thanksgiving?

By now you have heard about Tiger Woods being involved in an automobile accident in his neighborhood in Windermere, FL.

His injuries have been called "serious," but his condition is not. He may have already been released from the hospital (this article was written Friday afternoon at 3:30 pm ET).

According to a police report being read on CNN, Woods suffered "facial lacerations." It was reported that he was backing out of a driveway when he ran into a fire hydrant and then suddenly continued on before hitting a tree. He was taken to the hospital shortly thereafter.

The police report also confirmed that alcohol was not involved.

First and foremost, let's hope he is all right and that his injuries are not life- or career-threatening.

I do wonder what he was doing out so early in the morning. I mean, seriously, what would compel Tiger to jump in his Escalade a few hours after midnight?

Maybe he ate too much and needed to run to Walgreens for some Alka-Seltzer. Perhaps his wife was in the mood for Ben & Jerry's. Or one of the little ones came down with something, and Dad had to make that early morning run.

Another thought: Maybe he was trying to get a jump on the specials notorious on Black Friday. The lines at Wal-Mart tend to get long when they roll back those prices.

Regardless, it does make you wonder why Tiger Woods got behind the wheel of an automobile so early in the morning. Maybe I'm off base, but wouldn't he summon the hired help to fetch whatever was needed?

All joking aside, I hope he is fine and it doesn't affect his career. It seems alcohol was not involved, and maybe he was tired and/or not concentrating. I'll be interested in hearing what the cause truly was.

Does Anyone Want To Win The 2009 Heisman Trophy?

As we come to the end of the 2009 college football season, it seems that no one is talking about this year's Heisman Trophy race. Usually this late in the season there is one or two candidates that are the true front-runners for the award. That is not the case this season. Regardless, the award will be given on December 12, 2009.

Tim Tebow started the season as the front runner with Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy rounding out the top three candidates. However, Sam Bradford's shoulder injury ended his season and collegiate career, and Tim Tebow has not been as productive this season as predicted. Colt McCoy remains a viable candidate, and others have caught the eyes of the college football world.

Here is my list of the Top Five candidates for the 2009 Heisman Trophy. These candidates are presented in no particular order especially since the rivalry and conference championship games have yet to be played.
Begin Slideshow

Tim Tebow's Swan Song in The Swamp; Gator Nation Bids Farewell

During a press conference this week, Florida coach Urban Meyer paused several times as he answered questions about Tim Tebow and the effect he has had on Meyer's family and college football.

Meyer was overcome with emotion, and as I watched, I reflected on all the great moments Tebow has brought to Gator Nation.

My first memory was during Chris Leak's senior season in 2006 when the student section chanted Tebow's name, calling for him to enter the game.

I remember all the hype that surrounded "The Chosen One," but hearing the students chanting his name during the first game of the season made me wonder:

How good is this kid, Tim Tebow?

Soon it became customary for Leak to trot off the field as Tebow entered the game. Everyone knew the ball was not leaving his hands, and he was going to rush straight ahead while taking a lineman or two with him.

That is, until the National Championship game against Ohio State.

With 23 seconds left in the second quarter, in came Tebow, and the Ohio State defense prepped, thinking Tebow was going to lunge in for another score.

Instead, Tebow rolled left and quickly threw a one-yard pass to Andre Caldwell for a TD. That pass was an arrow shot through the hearts of Buckeye Nation.

It was also the coronation of Tim Tebow as King of Gator Nation.

Yes, Chris Leak won the MVP for the 2006 National Championship game, and as he walked off into the Arizona sunset, Gator Nation was already prepared for Tebow to take over the reins of the Gator football program.

When the 2007 season began, Tebow began his mission to become possibly the greatest college football player in history.

Tebow's 2007 season was historical. He was the first QB in college football history to both pass and rush for over 20 TDs in one season.

Those stats compelled voters to select Tebow as the first sophomore to ever win the Heisman Trophy. He would become the third Gator to win it, joining Steve Spurrier and Danny Wuerffel.

Then came the magical 2008 season. The Florida Gators were firing on all cylinders up until the Ole Miss game in The Swamp.

The Gators were upset on that Saturday afternoon, but Tebow took the opportunity to ask for forgiveness for the loss emotionally, and to promise everyone that he would push and lead the Gators for the remainder of the season like no other player ever had.

"The Promise" was heard around the world, and the legend of Tim Tebow was solidified in Gator lore for eternity.

The Gators of 2008, led by All-Everything Tim Tebow, would go on to win the National Championship in Miami, defeating Oklahoma and Heisman Trophy-winner Sam Bradford. This was the second National Championship in three years for the Florida Gators.

During the post-National Championship celebration in Gainesville, Tebow announced he would return for his senior season. Frankly, I never had a doubt in my mind.

During an interview after winning the Heisman Trophy, he said that his priorities were God, family, school, and football, in that order.

I never doubted that Tebow's priorities would ever change, so naturally he would return for his senior season.

Enter the 2009 season. Gone were Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy, and freshman phenom Andre Debose was out for the season with an injury.

Nevertheless, all the starters on defense from the National Championship squad were back, including Brandon Spikes, so naturally Florida was favored to repeat as national champions.

The season has had its ups and downs, most notably Tebow's concussion suffered in the third quarter of the Kentucky game in Lexington.

Never before had the college football world been controlled by one story: Would Tebow be able to play against LSU in Death Valley? It seemed like you couldn't turn on a television or radio without hearing some update on Tim.

Then game day arrived, and it was announced that he would play. Of course, he led the Gators to victory, if rather conservatively. Up until that point, the LSU Tigers had won 32 straight home games, but Tebow led the Gators to end that winning streak.

Florida's offense has not shown the firepower of the 2008 Gators, but Tebow has led the offense to produce just enough while allowing the defense to prevent any team from outscoring Florida.

The Gators are currently ranked No. 2 in total defense, No. 1 in pass defense, and No. 7 in rush defense in the FBS.

As Florida prepares to face FSU this weekend in The Swamp, the final home game of the 2009 season, there will be plenty of tears shed.

Not only is it Senior Day for coach Meyer's very first recruiting class, but quite possibly it may be the last time coach Bobby Bowden coaches the Florida State Seminoles during a regular season game.

Bob and Pam Tebow will be on the field when they introduce Tim on Saturday, and as he hugs his mom and dad, Gator Nation will stand and show its appreciation for all he has accomplished.

Unfortunately, I will not be in attendance at that game, but I will definitely be one of those who say "thank you" for everything he has done for Gator Nation.

I know fans of the University of Florida will have those same feelings, but I do hope all fans of college football put aside their biases and applaud his accomplishments, too.

Tim Tebow is an extraordinary athlete and student, but most importantly, he is an exceptional human being.

And who knows? As coach Meyer alluded to during the aforementioned press conference, Gator Nation may see Tim Tebow return, eventually, to the University of Florida as a coach and possible replacement for Meyer.

I would hate to see Meyer leave Florida, but if he did, I would welcome Tebow as his replacement.

Urban Meyer's Dream: It's Not About Notre Dame but Involves Tim Tebow

Today during his weekly press conference, Urban Meyer dismissed the notion of leaving the University of Florida for Notre Dame if and when Charlie Weis is dismissed as the Fighting Irish's head coach.

He did, however, admit something that is something I personally overlooked as a distinct possibility.

How does Head Coach Tim Tebow sound to the Gator Nation?

Meyer said that he could see Tebow as the future head coach for the University of Florida. He didn't say it in those words, but that is what I took away from what was actually said.

Now that is very interesting. Many question Tebow's future in the NFL as a QB, and some feel he will only compete as a FB or TE. What if Tebow gives it a try as a QB, then simply returns to Florida in a coaching capacity?

I don't think that's too far fetched of a possibility. Tim's mother and father are graduates of the University of Florida, and they met their as students prior to getting married and starting their mission in the Philippines. Add the legacy that Tim Tebow will leave behind in Gainesville, and you have the potential for Mr. Tebow to become Coach Tebow in the future.

During the same press conference, Meyer became very choked up when speaking about the upcoming game against FSU,and it being Tebow's last in Gainesville. Obviously, Tebow has had an impact on Meyer and his family, and the level of respect and friendship the two men now have will continue.

Tim Tebow, like it or not, may become the greatest college football player in the history of the NCAA. We may never see another player as accomplished or talented as Tebow, and the Gator Nation was privileged to be the school he chose to play at.

But for now, Tebow has three games remaining as the QB for the Florida Gators. This weekend against FSU will be a very emotional curtain call for him in Gainesville, and that will be followed up a week later in Atlanta when the Gators face Alabama for the SEC Championship.

Hopefully, the Gators will then have a date in Pasadena for their third National Championship in four years. Then it will be time for Tebow to enter the NFL Draft.

I do hope that Tebow has a successful career in the NFL. To me, he has the heart of a champion, and the leadership qualities to lead a team to a Super Bowl or two.

However, Coach Tim Tebow has a nice ring to it. Maybe Coach Tebow will make his debut in 2020, about the same time my son may make his debut as a Florida Gator football player. Hey, an Alumnus and Father can dream, can't he?

Is Notre Dame Becoming a Distraction For Urban Meyer?

Notre Dame's loss this week against Connecticut has cranked the heat up on talks of the inevitable demise of Charlie Weis. So what else is new you may ask?

I say one thing about this situation is for certain; it is becoming a distraction for Urban Meyer.

Now that FIU has been shown the door, the Florida Gators must focus on the last game of the regular season against Florida State. It will also be the last home game of the season, and surely emotions will be in high gear as the Gator Nation says goodbye to Tim Tebow.

After FSU, there will be two games left for Urban Meyer; the SEC Championship game in Atlanta on Dec. 5 and possibly the National Championship in Pasadena come Jan, 7.

However, in order to focus in on those two extremely important games, Coach Meyer and his staff must be able to concentrate on the task at hand. With the constant talk of the Notre Dame job soon becoming available and Meyer being at the top of the list of potential replacements, it is easy to see how this could become a very huge distraction.

Or is it?

I too am a Notre Dame fan. I am Irish, Catholic, and was born in Chicago. Every kid I can remember was a Notre Dame fan before my family and I moved to South Florida. But that was the early 1970s.

Now that we are in the 21st century, I'm not sure if Notre Dame is still the most prestigious head coaching job in college football. Yes, Notre Dame brings mystique, grandeur, history, and many fans, but is it even possible that Notre Dame is capable of being led back to the top of the college football world?

Until last season, when Notre Dame beat Hawaii and ended its bowl skid in the Hawaii Bowl, the last bowl game Notre Dame had won was against Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl in 1994.

Only Coach Meyer could answer the question, but would he be interested in attempting to bring Notre Dame out of this huge abyss? He has already brought Florida back into the national spotlight after the Ron Zook fiasco, and may possibly lead the Gators to their third national championship in four years. However, the Zook experiment only lasted a few years, and he did manage to recruit very well.

Meyer was able to leverage the talent Zook brought to Florida, and once Chris Leak graduated was he able to fully employ the spread offense. The speed necessary to run such an offense was in place; all he needed was the right QB to lead and run it.

Now let's assume that Coach Meyer took the Notre Dame gig seriously. First, would he have the athletes available to run a spread offense?

Yes, Jimmy Clausen is an excellent quarterback, but he is a traditional passing QB, and he does not have the speed or running ability to lead such an offense. Would it become another Michigan-type scenario?

How long would it take Coach Meyer to recruit the right personnel to get his offense productive at Notre Dame? Again, Notre Dame does not have the respect they once had with today's high school football players, and Coach Meyer knows that Florida is a more attractive option for football players in today's world.

Just like he has done at Florida and his other prior schools, he would need players with speed to commit to Notre Dame.

Moreover, Coach Meyer would have to deal with the academic standards of Notre Dame. It is a double-edged sword for college football coaches; a necessary evil they use to please parents, but at the end of the day it can be a deal-breaker for some world-class athletes.

Finally, how would Coach Meyer handle the spotlight of Notre Dame? How would he deal with the scrutiny that comes with that job? Sure, if he was immediately successful he would do just fine, but it is highly unlikely that Coach Meyer would be able to get Notre Dame back into the BCS in the first year or two, or even ever.

During that period of time, would Coach Meyer tolerate the constant analysis that the fans, alumni, and press would bring every week? Would he even want to deal with it?

Until he comes out and announces his intentions, he will have to continue dealing with the Notre Dame question while preparing the Florida Gators for the next three games. He will also have to deal with the realization that he only has Tim Tebow in his camp for three more games regardless of where he coaches.

I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I would give odds on Meyer remaining at Florida. Is it wishful thinking or daily praying on my part?

Perhaps a little of both, but regardless, Urban Meyer knows that he is the current king of the college football world, and his kingdom resides in Gainesville.

Urban Meyer's Decision: Remain a Florida Gator or Return to Notre Dame?

Now that Charlie Weis has most likely sealed his fate with another mediocre season, the annual rumor mill that has Urban Meyer returning to South Bend is cranking back up.

Before the 2009 season began, Coach Meyer said point-blank that he was not going to leave Florida to take the Notre Dame job if it became available.

Nevertheless, the talk continues, and here is my take on why it makes no sense for Meyer to leave Gainesville for South Bend.

First, Florida is in the top-five of all college football programs, and Urban Meyer has done the impossible by becoming the fan-favorite so soon after Steve Spurrier's departure. The OBC is a beloved figure in Gator lore, but Urban Meyer is the reigning king.

Second, Gainesville is in the epicenter of a recruiting mecca. Florida has always had access to recruits throughout their talent-rich state, but now Florida's reach has extended north and west in other areas of the country.

Notre Dame is still a household name all over the country, but the Irish mystique is not what it was in the 20th century.

Third, the Florida Gators team is almost the weekly showcase on CBS at 3:30pm ET, and if not on CBS, ESPN or one of its networks will pick up their game. Yes, Notre Dame has their own network in NBC, but again, the Florida Gators gets plenty of air time.

Fourth, the Florida Gators are on top of the SEC world, and the SEC is the most respected conference in college football. Notre Dame, on the other hand, is sometimes frowned upon for being their own "conference" and given their own position in the BCS.

Winning and competing in the SEC is much more rewarding, and so far Coach Meyer has done just fine.

Lastly, Coach Meyer has nothing more to prove. Wherever he has gone, he has created a winning program. Why would he risk his reputation and possibly fail in South Bend?

Yes, he may be driven to prove that he could bring the Irish back to the top, but he knows he can continue to win in Gainesville.

Sorry Irish fan, but look elsewhere for Weis' replacement. Urban Meyer has a powerhouse in Gainesville, and the Florida Gators will do whatever it takes to keep him happy.

Remember, he just received another raise, and surely if he brings another national championship back to Gainesville, he will most likely be rewarded once again.

One day, Urban Meyer may decide to head north to Notre Dame, but not now. Touchdown Jesus will stare down upon another head coach while Coach Urban Meyer continues his winning ways with Florida in the SEC.

Besides, everyone knows that God is a Florida Gator: He made the sun orange and the sky blue.

Florida-FIU: Will a Late Season Patsy Hurt the Gators' BCS Standing?

The Gator Nation has succumbed to a dry, mediocre, and sometimes boring undefeated 2009 college football season.

The Gators have marched undefeated through their SEC schedule, South Carolina being the last team to fall victim, led by the OBC himself, Steve Spurrier.

The regular season always ends with the Gators' annual matchup with FSU, and this season's game will feature Tim Tebow's last home game as a Gator and possibly Bobby Bowden's final game as head coach of FSU.

But before we are treated to that potentially historic event, there is one game that the Gators must host in The Swamp the week before.

FIU—the Florida International University Golden Panthers.

You know, the school that hired NBA great Isiah Thomas (OK, I had to take a jab at the President of FIU, whatever his name is) to coach their basketball team. The school that was involved in that ridiculous bench-clearing brawl during a football game against the "U" back in 2006.

Yes, that FIU, and the Gator Nation is thrilled to host them this weekend.

Seriously, when will the Gators start scheduling more respectable opponents that are outside the SEC? Sure, there are the arguments of the tough SEC schedule that the Gators face every season and the need to schedule schools that will play in The Swamp without needing a return engagement at their place for financial reasons. But enough is enough.

Will it damage Florida's BCS standing regardless of the outcome of the game? If the Gators were to be upset by FIU, it would without a doubt end their hopes of winning the national championship. If and when they defeat FIU, will it require an annihilation to impress the computers and voters?

I, for one, think it's time to punish teams that schedule doormats in order to increase cash flow and/or guarantee a victory. I understand that the smaller schools need the money for their programs, but there should be minimum requirements put in place to ensure each team's opponent is worthy of being on the schedule.

The Gators have already played Charleston Southern and Troy, and the third cream puff of the 2009 season is coming to town this weekend. Please wake me when it's over.

Gator fan, if you enjoy watching another boring and mundane game, feel free to reach out to your local cable operator to purchase the game on Pay-Per-View. I, on the other hand, will spend time with my family and get some chores done around the house instead.

OK, I'll probably listen to the game on Sirius or a local AM broadcast. But I refuse to help fill the coffers of the UF Athletic Department and will not pay one cent to witness this weekend's carnage.

Jeremy Foley, do the right thing and schedule more appropriate games, please?

College Football's Best Rivalries Past and Present

Over the next few weeks, college football will provide its fans with a plethora of rivalries for our viewing enjoyment. No other sport comes close to the emotion, pageantry, and competitiveness that college football provides.

Here is my take on the best college football rivalries both past and present. Some may not have anything to do with conference or national championships as of late, but they are entertaining nevertheless.
Begin Slideshow

Florida Gators Linebacker Brandon Spikes Suspended for Vanderbilt Game

Brandon Spikes, the undisputed leader of the No. 2 ranked Florida Gators defense, has been suspended for the first half of the upcoming Vanderbilt game due to an apparent eye-gouging incident during the Georgia game.

Coach Meyer: "I don't condone that. I understand what goes on the football field, but there's no place for that. We're going to suspend Brandon for the first half of the Vanderbilt game."

After checking with SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, Meyer passed the sentence on to Spikes who supposedly agreed with the decision.

Big deal.

Seriously, anyone with any knowledge of college football knows that things like that happen constantly during a football game. If it weren't for HDTV 1080p no one would have even seen the transgression.

Eye balls are not the only thing reached for or grabbed during a game. And no, I'm not going to provide examples. Use your imagination if you please.

Surely the Gators will say that they are not the same without Spikes on the field, but we are talking about Vanderbilt here. I won't be surprised if Florida is up by four touchdowns at halftime, and Meyer decides to put the second string in the game while Spikes continues to watch from the sidelines.

Why not suspend Spikes for the entire game? By doing so, Coach Meyer will silence those who feel the discipline is not enough, and he will allow Spikes the necessary rest for bigger and more important games.

The conspiracy theorists will be back in full force due to Meyer's decision. Sure, everyone wants Alabama and Florida in the SEC Championship game so one is guaranteed a trip to Pasadena. But come on, even if this was a big game coming up for Florida, is one player that important to the overall team's performance?

Well, this is Brandon Spikes.

He passed on leaving for the NFL to return for his senior season so he could help Florida win another National Championship. The offense has Tim Tebow who also returned for his senior season, and the defense has Spikes.

But the game Spikes is suspended for is against lowly Vanderbilt. So again, is it that important that Spikes is eligible to play during the second half of that game? Did Meyer even consider the fact that the next game is against Vanderbilt?

Or does he too think it's no big deal? Maybe he should.

Will the Florida Gators Look Past Vanderbilt to South Carolina?

It has been reported that Coach Urban Meyer, Tim Tebow, Brandon Spikes, and other key members of the Florida Gators had a meeting of the minds, and are now all on the same page.

Obviously you can see the result of that post-Mississippi State game team meeting, with the latest 41-17 blowout of the Georgia Bulldogs. It's a shame that Georgia wasted the opportunity to wear their black helmets for the first time.

Now the Gators must focus on their next stop on the road to Atlanta—Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt is 2-7 on the season, 0-5 in conference play, and in last place in the SEC East Division. Offensively, well let's just say they've been quite offensive this season. The Commodores are ranked No. 93 in total offense, No. 109 in passing offense, and No. 110 in scoring offense.

Defensively, they've fared slightly better, but not enough to concern Florida.

Tim Tebow and roommate wide receiver Riley Cooper seemed to have ironed out the wrinkles in the playbook, but Deonte Thompson and Dave Nelson still remain absent in the passing attack. Tight end Aaron Hernandez remains a playmaker any time he touches the ball.

Florida's running game still remains potent with Jeff Demps, Chris Rainey, and Emmanuel Moody. Ranked No. 6 in the nation, the Gators average 252.25 yards per game on the ground, and we cannot forget that Mr. Tebow makes up for a good portion of those yards.

Looming after Vanderbilt is the Ole Ball Coach, Mr. Steve Spurrier and the South Carolina Gamecocks. It is the last SEC game of the season for the Florida Gators, and it's conceivable that the Gators could look past Vanderbilt to that game. Besides, nothing would please Spurrier more than defeating his alma mater while they are on their way to another National Championship.

Conventional wisdom makes one ponder if the Gators can keep focused on the task at hand, which is the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Coach Urban Meyer will tell you that the Gators will only prepare for the Commodores, and not even think about South Carolina until the day after the Vanderbilt game. Unfortunately, we humans struggle with human nature, and it will be difficult not to look ahead.

Surely the OBC is looking forward to the Gators stopping by Columbia in two weeks.

Besides, Florida must continue to improve on offense, and get Thompson and Nelson more involved in the passing game. Florida's offensive line must also improve on pass protection. They cannot continue relying on Tebow's legs whenever a pass play goes sour.

Florida's defense continues to be outstanding, but the injury bug has arrived. Spikes was one of the first bitten, but now seems to be back to his old self again. The Gators have had to rely heavily on the defense in key games this season, and that will continue, for defense wins championships.

I have a feeling that the Commodores will give the Gators a good game, but come up short when it is all said and done. Nor will I be surprised if Vanderbilt keeps it close for all four quarters. Let's just hope the Gators are prepared to play all four quarters.

Tim Tebow Will Break Herschel Walker's Rushing TD Record This Weekend

Don't you find it ironic that Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow is about to break Herschel Walker's rushing TD record this weekend in Jacksonville, FL? Could this be the reason Tebow idled back some with his rushing TDs over the past few games?

I'm sorry, but there is something to this, and Coach Urban Meyer or Tim Tebow will never admit to it.

The Gator Nation is still fuming over that little stunt when the Georgia Bulldogs team charged the field after scoring first during the 2007 game. Yes, the Gators brought some revenge to the table last season with the 49-10 beatdown, but how poetic is it that this year a Florida Gators QB will break a record held by arguably the greatest Georgia Bulldogs football player while playing each other?

It's a beautiful thing.

Yes, I am a Gators fan. Yes, I graduated from the University of Florida. Yes, I despise the Georgia Bulldogs. And yes, I will cheer loudly when Tebow crosses the goal line to break Herschel Walker's record.

It's funny how Georgia fans still hold on for dear life to the overall record between the two teams, but don't look now: Florida is closing the gap quickly. Does anyone remember one of the many infamous Steve Spurrier quotes back when he was head coach of the Florida Gators?

Reporter: "Coach, do you ever see Florida catching up and passing Georgia's overall record?"

Spurrier: "I don't know if I'll be coaching that long."

The "Ole Ball Coach" was arrogance personified, and if you didn't love him, you hated him. I'm just glad to see one day the overall record will finally be surpassed and Spurrier may still be around to see it.

But in the meantime, Gator Nation will enjoy another victory and toast Tim Tebow's last performance as a Florida Gator here in his hometown of Jacksonville. I will be one of those raising a glass or two.

I'm sorry, Bulldogs fans, but get ready to lose another one. But don't worry, that overall record will still be yours—for now. One thing is for certain, though: Florida's all-time greatest player is about to take down a record that belongs to your greatest player.

Florida vs. Georgia: A Sobering Mismatch at the World's Largest Cocktail Party

This Saturday will showcase the No. 1 Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs in their annual showdown in Jacksonville, FL. The Gators will continue on the road to Atlanta and Pasadena as the Bulldogs attempt to salvage what many thought would be a rebuilding year.

For the Gators, this game is more than just another stop on the road to the National Championship.

Rewind to 2007 when the Georgia Bulldogs felt it necessary to charge the field in celebration when Knowshon Moreno scored the first touchdown of the game. Coach Mark Richt asked his team to celebrate, and claims he had no idea the team would rush the field.

Too bad, because all it did was motivate and anger Coach Urban Meyer and the Gator Nation.

The 2008 game was a blow-out as the Gators embarrassed the Bulldogs 49-10. The Georgia Bulldogs did very little celebrating that day.

This year, the Bulldogs come limping in to Jacksonville with a 4-3 overall record, and 3-2 in the conference. They are ranked No. 90 in Total Offense, and No. 70 in Total Defense.

Compared to the Florida Gators, who are ranked No. 8 in total offense and No. 1 in total defense, conventional wisdom would lead one to believe that this year's game will be worse for Georgia than the 2008 meeting.

Well, don't let the stats fool you. The Gators have struggled offensively this season, and Heisman Trophy candidate Tim Tebow has yet to figure out how to better utilize his wide receivers in the passing game. Also, RB Jeff Demps was seen walking around this week with a neck brace, so the Gators may be without his services this week.

However, the Gators defense has been nothing short of stellar. In seven games this season, they have given up only six touchdowns while grabbing 10 interceptions. They have only given up 135 yards per game in the air and 94.57 yards per game on the ground.

Georgia better bring their A+ game to Jacksonville, and Coach Richt would be smart to not order any more celebrations.

Coach Meyer hasn't forgotten that little stunt in 2007, and don't think for a moment that hasn't come up in conversation this week while the team has prepared. Georgia is Florida's most hated rival, and with an offense that is struggling, you can be sure that Meyer is pulling everything out of the bag to motivate his team to score.

For Georgia to win, they will need to get the run game going and greatly improve their average of 108 yards per game. As for their passing game, they average 226.71 yards per game, but Georgia cannot afford to rely on solely on the pass as they are facing the No. 2 passing defense in the country.

Good luck, Georgia.

Florida will win easily, and my only concern is if I have to stay the entire game, or if I can leave at half-time so I can meet up with my son to go trick-or-treating later that evening.

Perhaps the Bulldogs fans may choose to just stay home and trick-or-treat instead of witnessing another loss to Florida.

The Gator Nation will make several toasts at this year's Cocktail Party.

Florida 31 and Georgia 10.

The Florida Gators are Overrated and That's the Problem

The Florida Gators have been under the microscope since they were given the number one ranking before the season started. As the season has progressed, Tim Tebow and the Gators offense has sputtered and been a shadow of its former self leaving many to wonder what the problem is.

Well, I'm here to tell you exactly what the problem truly is. Are you ready? Make sure you tell everyone you read it here first.

The Gators are ranked No. 1.

You see, the Gators have leveraged the underdog role during the 2006 and 2008 seasons. For once, the Gators have started the season number one, and they have no idea where to draw their inspiration from.

Think about it: In 2006, Tebow was a freshman behind Chris Leak, and going in to the National Championship game many thought that Michigan should have been in the game and not the Gators.

Once the Gators were announced as the opponent to the supposed unbeatable Ohio State, the Gators had a chip on their shoulders as everyone in the free world thought the Buckeyes were going to kill them.

Fast-forward to last season and again the Gators were the underdog to Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford and the unstoppable offense of the Oklahoma Sooners. The former and current Heisman winners went up against each other and the Gators were victorious once again.

This season is different.

Everyone expects the Gators to repeat. All 11 defensive starters from last season's squad returned, and Tim Tebow returned for his senior season with one thing in mind—to repeat as National Champions and perhaps for Tebow to win a second Heisman Trophy.

However, the departure of Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy to the NFL, and Offensive Coordinator Dan Mullen to take the head coaching position at Mississippi State was overlooked. We have yet to see a wide receiver step up, and current Offensive Coordinator Steve Addazio is on page three of the offensive playbook and still reading.

Coach Urban Meyer has admitted that too much pressure has been put on the offense especially Tim Tebow, and he knows that something must be done to open up the offense. The college football world waits to see what he does next.

This week Florida meets Georgia in the annual meeting in Jacksonville, FL to continue on their way to Atlanta and Pasadena. Unfortunately, if something doesn't change soon they may not make it there. Georgia and South Carolina would love nothing more to knock Florida off the tracks.

But that's just it—maybe that's what Florida needs. They need to lose or simply fall in the BCS rankings. Make them feel disrespected, or simply tell them they are not good enough.

That's the motivation that's missing and holding them back.

Florida Gators' Tim Tebow Is Actually Human and Not Superman

The expectations for the Florida Gators and Tim Tebow were high in the Stratosphere going into the season, and even though they are undefeated going into the World's Largest Cocktail Party, they are falling short of those expectations.

Mind you that the defense has been stellar, and their performance year-to-date has carried the entire team. The offense has simply been mediocre at best.

So has Tim Tebow.

The leading Heisman candidate going into the season, Tebow was firing on all cylinders up until the third quarter of the Kentucky game, when suddenly he was knocked out and helped off the field. He suffered the concussion felt around the world.

He returned after a bye week to face LSU, but frankly hasn't been the same. He has shown flashes of his trademark competitiveness, but the "bull in a china shop" mentality has disappeared.

Did the injury make him reevaluate his future? Has Tebow realized that if he continues playing like a fullback that his career may end prematurely?

Perhaps.

As a QB, Tebow was taking way too much punishment. Ironically, Tebow was standing in the pocket looking down field to pass when he was leveled. He never saw the hit coming, and it turned into a wake up call.

Tebow has been looking down field, but within a split second, he is usually running for his life. The offensive line is not used to pass protection; it is used to blowing defenders off the line while Tebow or a RB takes off and within seconds are halfway down field.

What does Coach Meyer and Addazio need to do to get Tebow and the Gators offense back on track?

First, they need to take the pressure off the offense. After the Mississippi State game, Meyer admitted that he has done a poor job coaching and has put Tebow in impossible situations. Let Tebow be Tebow, but find a way to give him time to scan the field for open receivers.

Second, they need a receiver to step up other than Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez has been stellar, and he's even been pitched to in the spread offense. Riley Cooper or Deonte Thompson must establish themselves as the go—to receiver and keep defensive backs out of the box.

Third and last, open up the playbook and get creative with the offensive play—calling. The Gators offense has been too predictive, and Defensive Coordinators are prepared for the plays that are currently being called.

The aforementioned World's Largest Cocktail Party is next weekend, and Georgia with their struggling season is the perfect storm for the Gators to lose their first game of the season. Will Tebow and the offense overcome their woes and continue on with their undefeated season?

That is why they play the game. Georgia may be their most hated rival, but that will not be enough motivation for Florida if they don't fix what's broken on offense.

Florida Gators-Mississippi State Bulldogs: Urban Meyer Vs. Dan Mullen

This weekend on ESPN, the Florida Gators will visit Starkville to play Dan Mullen's Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Tune in at 7:30pm ET because it's going to be a great game.

Yes, I said a "great" game. If you haven't noticed, the Gators offense has been mediocre at best this season, and conventional wisdom leads most to believe Dan Mullen's departure from the Gators may be the leading cause.

Mullen worked for Meyer at Bowling Green, Utah, and the University of Florida before accepting the head coaching job at Mississippi State. Saturday will be the first time they face each other in competition as head coaches.

The Florida Gators are still a question mark offensively even though they are ranked No. 6 in Total Offense. Through six games the Gators are averaging a total of 470.5 yards per game.

Will this be the latest version of David vs. Goliath?

Perhaps.

Mississippi State, defensively, has given up 22 touchdowns in seven games, whereas the Gators have only given up four. Offensively, the Bulldogs have found the end zone 23 times and average 390.29 yards per game, while the Gators have held their opponents to 228.33 yards per game.

Mississippi State will have to play lights out if they have any chance whatsoever in winning this game.

One thing that statistics cannot measure is Mullen's knowledge of the Florida Gators offense, and to a point their defense. Will that be the X factor in giving Mississippi State any hope in winning the game?

Unlikely.

Let's face it; the Bulldogs are grossly mismatched at practically every position on the field. So much so that Mississippi State may not provide the defense needed to keep the Gators misfiring on offense.

The Bulldogs defense has given up eight TDs through the air while grabbing nine INTs. Tim Tebow, the Heisman front-runner, has had a two INTs this season, so don't be surprised if he gives up one or two more.

Remember, Coach Mullen knows Tebow very well.

The Gators will most likely view Starkville as a rest stop on the road to Pasadena. When it is all said and done, Meyer and Mullen will shake hands in the middle of the field, and then call each other Sunday morning to discuss the specifics of the game.

Meyer may even apologize in his own way for the game's score.

Prediction: Florida 51 and Mississippi State 10.

Florida Gators' Mid-Term Report Card

The Florida Gators are undefeated and well on their way to Atlanta for the SEC Championship and Pasadena for the National Championship. Now that we have reached mid-season, let's take this opportunity to analyze their performance in key areas. The names Tim Tebow and Brandon Spikes are well-known, perhaps there are other players who should receive equal time in the spotlight as well.
Begin Slideshow

Florida Falls to No. 2 As Alabama Becomes No. 1 in The AP Poll

After coming from behind against Arkansas to win their sixth game of the season, the Florida Gators have fallen to No. 2 as Alabama rose to No. 1 in the AP Poll.

Alabama, on the coattails of Mark Ingram's outstanding performance against South Carolina, has won the hearts of 39 voters this week. At the same time, he has also become a Heisman candidate.

Now, help me understand how the defending National Champions and winners of 16 straight games dating back to the 2008 season have now dropped in the AP poll?

Yes, Alabama has been impressive.

Yes, Alabama easily defeated Arkansas; whereas the Gators struggled throughout the game before pulling out with :09 seconds left.

Nevertheless, the Florida Gators are still undefeated.

The USA Today Coaches Poll still has Florida No. 1, but the writers obviously know more than the coaches who vote in the coaches poll.

Who knows what is going to happen for the remainder of the season. There is plenty of football to be played, and the Gators must travel to Mississippi State to face the Bulldogs and former offensive coordinator Dan Mullen.

I am the first to admit that the Gators offensive play has been lackluster since the Tennessee game, and that Florida's defense has carried the team. But again, as a team, Florida has done what it takes to win.

Alabama still has Tennessee, LSU, and Auburn on the schedule, and two of those teams (i.e. LSU and Auburn) have legitimate shots at upsetting the Crimson Tide.

Most feel that the SEC Championship in Atlanta will host both Florida and Alabama, and by default it will be the actual National Championship game. The SEC has garnered that much respect, and rightfully so.

Florida must address their offensive woes if they hope to make it to Atlanta.

Freshman Andre Debose was suppose to be the answer to Percy Harvin's departure, but an injury shelved him for the season. Riley Cooper, Dave Nelson, and Deonte Thompson have yet to step up to become the go-to guy at WR.

Have the defensive coordinators in the SEC figured out the spread offensive attack? Have the Florida Gators become too predictable? Are the Gators really over-rated?

The answer to all three questions is no.

Coach Urban Meyer has a rookie offensive coordinator in Steve Addazio. Meyer must allow Addazio to assimilate into his new role, but not at the expense of offensive productivity.

It is obvious that Dan Mullen's departure is also having an affect on the overall performance of the Gators' offense.

At the end of the day, all that matters is winning games, and Florida has done just that. Continue to win and the Gators will make it to Pasadena.

However, if they do not come up with ways to address the opportunities to improve their passing game, then they will eventually slide further down the polls and nothing else will matter.

Will Tim Tebow's Concussion Replace The Promise of 2008?

Let's face it: Tim Tebow is a leader amongst men. Time and time again Tebow has rallied and driven the Florida Gators to accomplish feats that some felt couldn't be done.

When Ole Miss defeated Florida in The Swamp last season, many thought that the Gators' season had come to an end. During the postgame press conference, Tebow stood front and center behind a podium fighting back tears while guaranteeing that he would will his team to go undefeated for the rest of the season.

"The Promise" was born.

Tebow's words have become immortalized by Coach Urban Meyer. He had Tebow's speech put up on a wall outside of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium during the offseason for all to see and never forget.

"The Promise" was not only a message delivered to answer for a lost game, but a rallying cry for the Florida Gators that ultimately led them to win their second national championship in three years.

During the Kentucky game this season, Tebow suffered a serious injury when his head bounced off the leg of one of his teammates during a sack. As he laid on the ground obviously injured, the Gator Nation released a gasp that was heard around the world.

"The Concussion" was born.

Not to downplay the seriousness of the injury, but this latest occurrence of the brain injury received more attention in the national sports press than can be recalled from recent memory. Because of Tebow's stature in all of NCAA college football, we were receiving daily updates on his injury and recovery.

The Gators had a bye week immediately after the Kentucky game, and it allowed Tebow an extra week of recovery before he was to start against LSU. "Would he start?" was the question on everyone's mind, and it provided debate material right down to the last minute on game day.

When it was announced that Tebow was cleared to play against LSU, it became a forgone conclusion that he would start. Seriously, this was Tim Tebow. Did you really think that he wouldn't start once he received clearance to play?

Unlike last season, Tebow did not say a word. There was no "promise," no guarantee, and no emotion. Tebow did what the doctors told him to do, and he recovered quickly. Did his actions during his recovery take the place of words that motivated the Florida Gators previously?

LSU had won 32 straight night games in Death Valley prior to the Florida Gators arrival on Oct. 10, 2009. When Tebow and the Florida Gators triumphantly walked off the field after their well-earned and fought victory, the sports world took notice and silently applauded.

There are plenty of games left in the 2009 season. Everything points to a showdown in Atlanta between the Florida Gators and Alabama Crimson Tide for the SEC Championship. The winner of that game will most certainly go on to play for the National Championship in Pasadena.

Don't expect Tim Tebow to deliver another powerful oratory like last season. However, do expect Tebow to lead the Florida Gators to another SEC and National Championship.

"The Concussion" may serve as a rallying cry for the Florida Gators. It may also serve as a reminder that Tebow is not unlike other athletes who are injured, sometimes seriously, during the season. This one event may end up serving the needs of many, and this is something that Tim Tebow's actions are quite used to.

Arkansas-Florida: Intriguing Weekend in the Swamp as Gators Host Hogs

This weekend, coach Bobby Petrino's Arkansas Razorbacks come to Gainesville to face the No. 1-ranked Florida Gators. It is also Florida's Homecoming.

Last week, Arkansas convincingly defeated Auburn, handing them their first defeat of the season.

Ryan Mallett threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran four yards for another touchdown. Razorbacks RB Michael Smith rushed for 145 yards and one touchdown.

However, this week Arkansas faces the No. 1 defense in the country when they play the Florida Gators.

Florida's pass defense is compelling. This season they have given up one touchdown while intercepting seven passes. Only 576 total passing yards have been given up this season.

On the other hand, Arkansas' passing offense is ranked No. 10 in the country. Currently the Razorbacks are averaging 318.2 yards/game through the air. If they are to meet or beat their average this weekend, they will have to pass for 55 percent more yards than the Gators have given up all season.

Arkansas surely will attempt to establish a running game in order to facilitate their passing attack. Florida relinquishes 87.4 yards/game on the ground and has given up just one touchdown this season via rushing. Arkansas has scored seven times on the ground this season.

Tim Tebow returned last week against LSU after suffering a concussion against Kentucky two weeks prior, and the question remains if Tebow will return to his normal self this week. If so, the Arkansas defense will have their work cut out for them.

Coach Petrino and his staff will have to create and implement a masterful game plan, and his players will have to play flawlessly if they hope to have any chance of victory.

Against Auburn last week, Arkansas allowed RB Ben Tate to rush for 184 yards on 22 attempts. He scored two touchdowns and averaged 8.4 yards/carry. Arkansas will have to solidify their rushing defense if they hope to stop Tebow, Jeff Demps, Chris Rainey, and Emmanuel Moody.

Florida's Homecoming celebration will begin Friday night with their annual Gator Growl, and the party will continue well into Saturday afternoon. Florida will win convincingly, 34 to 14.

Will the Florida Gators' Homecoming Prove an Emotional Letdown vs. Arkansas?

This week, the Arkansas Razorbacks come to town to face the Florida Gators during their Homecoming weekend. The Razorbacks are coming off a tremendous 44-23 victory over the Auburn Tigers.

The Gators are also coming off a victory over the LSU Tigers after a two-week period of indecision and uncertainty. Tim Tebow's concussion was the biggest story, and that story's conclusion came Saturday night when he led the Gators to victory in Death Valley.

Now, the Gators are home for Homecoming this weekend. Arkansas will be the underdog, but will be riding high after winning two in a row against Texas A&M and Auburn. They will also have a fallen teammate on their minds.

Sophomore Joe Adams, the Arkansas wide receiver who suffered a mild stroke a week ago, will be to Arkansas what Tim Tebow was to Florida going into the LSU game. He will not play in this weekend's game—however, Adams will be an emotional sparkplug for an Arkansas Razorbacks team that will rally around him.

Against Auburn, the Razorback defense was solid, not allowing Auburn to cross the 50-yard line until midway through the second quarter.

"Our guys were great on defense. We came out and hit (Auburn) in the mouth early and didn't look back," said Bobby Petrino after the game.

Also, Petrino's offense has scored quickly this season. Arkansas, to date this season, has 12 touchdowns scored in less than three minutes, and 10 scored in less than two minutes.

The Razorback rushing attack has seen success, as well. Against Auburn, Arkansas rushed for 221 yards led by senior running back Michael Smith, who had 18 rushes for 145 yards. Now that the Razorback receiving corps is being hit by the injury bug, the rushing game will be called upon more as the season progresses.

Will Arkansas have success against the Florida Gator defense?

I doubt it, but again, how will the Gators respond after an emotional victory in Baton Rouge? Will they be able to settle in and focus on the Arkansas Razorbacks?

I believe so. Coach Urban Meyer prepares his teams like no other, and an undefeated season is definitely a goal for this team.

Tebow played well, and reports out of Gainesville state that he is still taking post-concussion tests to ensure he has recovered. That recovery will continue on the field this weekend.

The Gators run game should continue to see success, but a question mark still remains with Florida's passing attack. We have seen flashes from Deonte Thompson, Riley Cooper, and Dave Nelson, but tight end Aaron Hernandez has been the shining star so far.

Is an emotional let-down a possibility? Yes, but highly unlikely.

The Gators will celebrate their Homecoming with a victory this week.

My prediction: Florida 38, Arkansas 14

Jacksonville Jaguars-Seattle Seahawks: A Case Study In Humiliation

Earlier this season I wrote an article asking if this should be Coach Jack Del Rio's last season in Jacksonville. Today, my question was clearly answered.

By the time the plane touches down in Jacksonville late Sunday or early Monday morning, Wayne Weaver hopefully will have pulled the trigger and dismissed Coach Del Rio.

It's time to stop avoiding the inevitable. Please do not give me the "it's a young team," "give GM Gene Smith a chance", or "it's only five games into the season" excuses. Del Rio has proven time and time again that he is not capable of coaching an NFL team.

He has fired more assistant coaches than any other NFL head coach in the last three seasons. How many more players can he suspend or deactivate? Today's victim was Mike Sims-Walker. The reason behind the decision is unknown, but surely it was critical enough to sit one of the more productive offensive players while on the road.

Earlier this season I thought the players were without passion or desire. Could it be possible that they simply are not motivated or want to play for Del Rio? Seriously, what other reason could there be for such a pathetic performance after last week's victory?

The St. Louis Rams come calling on Jacksonville next week, and they have yet to win a game this season. I will not be surprised if they defeat Jacksonville for their first victory.

I think its time for Del Rio to "chop wood" and turn in his resignation before Weaver shows him the door. That would be the honorable thing to do.

Final score: 41-0. Thank you for playing, Jacksonville.

Florida Gators at LSU Tigers: Tebow and Spikes Silence Death Valley

It may have been ugly, but it was a defensive battle as the Florida Gators defeated the LSU Tigers 13-3 in Baton Rouge.

Let's first analyze the offensive performance of both teams. The Gators relied heavily on the run. The LSU defense struggled to contain Emmanuel Moody, Chris Rainey, and Jeff Demps all night. LSU's offense, on the other hand, could do very little against stout Florida defense.

Florida's offense put a total of 328 yards on LSU, whereas LSU could only muster 174 yards. Out of the 328 yards Florida produced, 198 of those yards were on the ground. The Gators averaged 4.0 yards/carry while LSU only averaged 2.3/carry.

However, the Gators did their best to keep things interesting. First, there was the fourth and two they went for and missed. Then a missed chip-shot field goal certainly kept the game compelling, and Tebow's interception in the fourth quarter definitely made Florida fans stay in their seats. But it was Florida's defense that kept the Gators in the game.

In an earlier article, I reminded everyone to keep an eye on Brandon Spikes, and my prognostication came true. With 2.5 sacks and 12 tackles (three for losses), Spikes led the Gators defense throughout the night.

Steve Addazio purposely kept it boring throughout the first half allowing Tebow to acclimate to the game. The Florida running game was superb throughout even without much production from Tebow.

A boring and ugly game it was, but one could argue it was a classic SEC defensive battle. I for one am happy it's over, and onto Homecoming with Arkansas coming to town.

Florida Gators at LSU Tigers: Tebow? Don't Forget Brandon Spikes

With all the talk about Tim Tebow's come-back from the concussion he suffered during the Kentucky game two weeks ago, the focus has not been on the leader of the Gator defense, Brandon Spikes.

Do remember that it was Spikes, who like Tebow, decided to come back for his senior year while most likely leaving millions of dollars on the NFL table to do so. He did it to win another National Championship.

In fact, all 11 defensive starters from last year's National Championship team returned, and Spikes is the leader of that formidable squad.

LSU has scraped by the last two games against Mississippi State and Georgia. Luck and home field will not be enough for LSU to defeat Florida.

LSU will have to move the ball against the Gator defense. That is where the game will be decided. Regardless of who starts at QB for Florida, the Gator offense will score. If Brantley does start, look for Emmanuel Moody to take on a bigger role at RB.

Experience and speed are definitely on the side of the Gator defense. LSU's offense has yet to experience what they will face tonight. LSU's offensive line has already given up 13 sacks this season, and that number will increase tonight.

Also, LSU's running back tandem of Charles Scott and Keiland Williams will be the first focus for the Gator defense, and Spikes enjoys stopping the run. Moreover, with five TDs this season combined, WRs Brandon LaFell and Terrance Tolliver will face a hard-hitting and speedy Florida secondary. Don't forget that Spikes had an interception that he returned for a TD last season, too.

Yes, Baton Rouge will be rocking tonight, and it will be a tough environment for the Gators to be successful. However, Brandon Spikes will lead the Gator defense to stop the LSU offense, which will allow the Gator offense to be on the field 30+ minutes.

Final score: Florida 27 & LSU 14

Florida Gators Breaking News: Tim Tebow Returns to Practice in Full Pads

Breaking news: Tim Tebow has returned to practice today in full pads. Obviously, the doctors have cleared Tebow, and now we must wait for Coach Urban Meyer to officially declare him the starter Saturday night.

Barring any setbacks, you can bet that Tebow will start at LSU in Baton Rouge. As long as his health is not in jeopardy, I want Tebow to start so there are no excuses if the Gators lose.

If the Gators do lose, you can bet there will be Gators fans claiming that Tebow is still suffering from the effects of the concussion and that he wasn’t at his best. Let me be the first to say that, if the Gators do lose, it will have nothing to do with one individual; it will be because the team did not perform.

I think the Gators would win with Tebow or John Brantley at quarterback. Have you seen how LSU played their last two games against Mississippi State and Georgia? LSU will have to greatly improve on both sides of the ball if they want to have a chance against the No. 1 team in the nation.

The biggest question of the game will be how Tebow bounces back after the concussion suffered against Kentucky. I’m guessing that Tebow will be his normal self, but it will take a series or two before he is 100% comfortable in the pocket or running the ball.

Most defenders attempt to tackle Tebow by wrapping up his legs, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they go at his upper body to shake him up a bit. Will Tebow lower his shoulders like he normally does, or will the concussion compel him to run more upright?

Also, when he does drop back to pass, will he get a sudden case of happy feet? Will he look at one receiver, and then simply take off running before possibly getting sacked, or will he remain calm and check down to his second or third receiver?

These are the questions that will be answered once the game starts. Tebow is entering into uncharted territory coming off his first concussion, and it will be very interesting to watch how it affects his game play.

I have no doubt that Tebow will revert to his normal "bull in a china shop" style, and attempt to run over any defender that is standing between him and the end zone. LSU better be prepared, because Tebow may think he has something to prove and dial it up a notch or two.

Florida-LSU: The Best Annual Game in the SEC

There are many storied annual games throughout the Football Bowl Subdivision, and the same goes for the Southeastern Conference.

Conventional wisdom would lead one to think that the “Iron Bowl” between Alabama and Auburn would be ranked No. 1, but I beg to differ.

The annual matchup between Florida and LSU is simply the best of the SEC year in and year out.

If you have never attended a game in either Baton Rouge or Gainesville, you haven’t experienced college football at its finest. Both stadiums, Death Valley and The Swamp, are arguably the loudest and rowdiest home field crowds anywhere.

Both teams have won the last three national championships, and arguably Florida is on their way to winning their third in four years. LSU has a shot too, but they must face Auburn and Alabama, and both are undefeated.

But it is the winner of this annual game that goes on to win the SEC and national championships.

There is a little mystery with Tim Tebow that makes this year’s game more compelling, but regardless of Tebow or John Brantley, LSU will have to greatly improve if they have a chance of winning.

Against Mississippi State, LSU gave up 151 yards on the ground and converted only two third downs on 13 attempts. Florida and their spread offense will gain even more on the ground against LSU, and Florida’s defense is much more stout than Mississippi State’s.

Don’t think for a moment that coach Urban Meyer will not dial up coach Dan Mullen’s number and pick his brain about LSU. Coach Meyer is well known for building relationships with other coaches, and since Coach Mullen is a former protege, this will be a common sense move.

Of course, the quarterback decision for the Florida Gators remains to be seen. It has yet to be determined if Tebow will be cleared to play, and if Brantley is asked to start, you can rest assured that Florida will put Brantley in a better position to be successful by mixing up running plays to move the Gator offense.

Les Miles has his work cut out for him if he is to push his team past Florida this coming Saturday night. However, too many weapons and a great defense will allow the Gators to prevail in Baton Rouge.

LSU’s home winning streak will come to a screeching halt, but one thing is for certain: This game will again show that it is the best in the SEC annually, and all eyes will be watching.

Florida Gators at LSU Tigers: Tim Tebow or John Brantley?

Questions still remain regarding the health of Tim Tebow. Coach Urban Meyer has deferred to the University of Florida medical staff to determine if Tebow will be ready to play at LSU, and rightfully so.

Many wonder if John Brantley can lead the Gators to victory in Baton Rouge on Oct. 10. Of course, the only way we’ll find out is if he starts in Tebow’s place, so let’s take a look and assume Brantley is going to start.

How will Steve Addazio strategize for the game? First, he will rely heavily on Demps, Rainey, and Moody to carry the rock at least 30 times.

I’m not talking about running between the tackles mind you, but he will have to mix it up via draws and play-action along with good old-fashioned shovel passes.

That naturally leads to the play of the Gator offensive line. Not only will they have to continue opening holes, but will they be able to pass protect against LSU’s defensive rush?

Let’s face it; the Gator’s offense is a run-first and pass-second spread attack, which is the exact opposite of Brantley’s strength and style. If Brantley does start, can the Gator offensive line be able to make adjustments to protect him?

The Gator wide receivers must be scrutinized if Brantley starts. With the departures of Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy, questions at the beginning of the season were asked; unfortunately, they have yet to be answered.

Riley Cooper and David Nelson have shown glimpses of what they are capable of, but they will need to bring their “A” games to Baton Rouge if the Gators hope to win.

I have confidence in Brantley, but the strength of the Gator offense will be marginalized. The running game will be key, and if it carries the load, then by default Brantley may be able to bring the Gator passing game into the spotlight.

The Gators are quite capable of winning if Brantley does start. However, there is one thing to remember; if the Gators are to lose a game this season, this would be the one.

LSU is in the Western Division, and as long as the Gators win all their Eastern Division games, they will be in Atlanta, most likely to face Alabama, in December.

Let’s take the guesswork out of this analysis. Just like if there was any doubt he wasn’t going to return for his senior season, Tebow will start at LSU. The above is moot.

My prediction: Florida 28, LSU 10. LSU’s home-night game winning streak comes to a screeching halt.

The Jacksonville Jaguars Embarrass The Tennessee Titans 37-17

I wonder if Coach Jeff Fisher still thinks he can call Jacksonville Municipal Stadium home after his Tennessee Titans were humiliated in front of 49,014 Jaguars fans with a 37-17 loss.

David Garrard looked superb throwing 27 completions on 37 attempts for 323 yards and three touchdowns. For the second week in a row, Mike Sims-Walker was the leading Jacksonville Jaguar receiver with seven receptions for 91 yards and two touchdowns. His longest reception was for 19 yards.

Marcedes Lewis contributed in a positive way with four receptions for 76 yards and one touchdown. Torry Holt caught three passes for 42 yards, and Mike Thomas went five for 31 yards.

Maurice Jones-Drew had a mediocre day producing 14 yards on six carries, and 26 yards on three receptions. He did score one rushing touchdown.

The story of the day was the decimated Titans secondary. Garrard looked like Joe Montana as he easily picked on their cornerbacks especially rookie Jason McCourty.

We can only hope that the Jaguars have repaired what was broken offensively. One would be foolish to think that all the team's issues are now resolved. Jacksonville is still a very young team, but the difference today compared to their last home game two weeks ago against the Arizona Cardinals is that they played with passion and heart.

Maybe Wayne Weaver's announcement of games being played in Orlando coupled with two wins in a row will compel fans to return to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. I'll admit that I may have spoken a bit too soon and that the Jaguars may be making significant progress.

Next week they travel to Seattle. Could Jacksonville go from an 0-2 start to a 3-2 record? It looks like a strong possibility.
