"T.O. To Bears" Swirling Rumor in Chicago

ESPN's Adam Schefter, on Tuesday, suggested that a Terrell Owens trade to the Chicago Bears would make sense.

Schefter's article appeared in ESPN's Rumor Central section, and Bears fan’s are wondering what could be, or not to be. So much so, that the National Post reported at approximately 2:00 pm central, the search term “T.O. To Bears" was No. 12 on Google Trends, and climbing.

At this point it appears that Schefter’s article is pure speculation, and has no basis in reality.

The Bears could use a legitimate No. 1 wide out, but not desperately. Currently Devin Hester is the No.1 receiver, and thus far has fared well. Chicago has found another rookie weapon on the wide receiver corps with Johnny Knox.

It’s logical in theory that adding a weapon like Terrell Owens would benefit the organization. However, it’s very unlikely at this point that T.O. will land in a Bears uniform this season.

Bears-Falcons: Sunday Night Prime Time Game of the Week

The 3-1 Chicago Bears and 3-1 Atlanta Falcons will square off Sunday night in what is shaping up to be the game of the week.

The Atlanta Falcons beat an improving San Francisco team in week five after coming off their bye week in week four. The Falcons’ performance was nothing short of outstanding with 477 total yards, the most by the team since Dec. 22, 2002.

Atlanta's smash mouth offensive attack was led by the talented Matt Ryan, who completed 22 of 32 passes for 329 yards. As a result, he celebrated two TDs and also ran for a late score.

Ryan’s trusted receiver, Roddy White, had a 90-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown and a 31-yard TD reception. White had a career-high 210 receiving yards, which broke Terance Mathis' previous franchise record of 198 set on Dec. 13, 1998 vs. New Orleans.

This season Atlanta is the only team in the NFL that has players ranked in the top seven at QB, RB, WR, and TE.

Last season the Falcons had no true leading rusher; however, this year Chicago native Michael Turner has 87 carries for 323 yards and five TDs. Three of the five came last week against the 49ers. His stock value is on the rise, and he’s showing that a little trickery with raw talent in the backfield can get you ranked in the top seven RBs in the league.

Defensively Atlanta has improved from last season. This defense ranked 13th overall in fewest points allowed per game. Currently they rank fourth and continue showing improvement every week.

One gleaming beam of concern for this unit is the pass rush. The unit is currently ranked 26th in sacks with a total of eight coming into the game against Chicago. That’s nothing shocking, however, because Atlanta fans have questioned the offseason moves as inadequate in acquiring better pass rush players.

The Chicago Bears are coming out of their bye week with a healthier and rested roster. The question remains if Chicago can play football in the first half. Chicago has been terrible in its entire first halves this season, getting outscored 31-7 in the first quarter of play.

The Chicago Bears' offensive attack has been traditionally a run-first scheme; however, with quarterback Jay Cutler under center, Chicago has shown flexibility on changing that scheme to an air attack if needed. Against the Lions, Cutler was 18-of-28 on completions, with 144 yards and two TDs and one rushing TD.

Chicago’s running game sparked some life during week four against the Detroit Lions, led by Matt Forte, who had 12 carries for 121 yards and one TD.

The lackluster running attack shows a weakness on the offensive line, and sources have LT Frank Omiyale on the bubble of losing his starting position to Josh Beekman.

Chicago’s defense will be tested against the Falcons' high-powered offense. The Bears have had three starting linebacker combinations in four games after injuries to Brian Urlacher, Pisa Tinoisamoa, and Hunter Hillenmeyer.

Tinoisamoa will return to action against Atlanta at strong-side linebacker. The Bears will be without middle linebacker Hillenmeyer; however, his replacement Nick Roach has been playing good football, and some speculate that he will remain the starter even when Hillenmeyer is back.

Chicago will need to continue its strong pass rush on Sunday to keep Matt Ryan uncomfortable in the pocket. Atlanta's quarterback had a breakout performance in last year’s game against the Bears, completing 22 of 30 passes for 301 yards with one touchdown and a 116.1 passer rating.

Chicago is looking to make a statement after last year's disappointing loss against the Falcons. The teams will be ready, and the cameras will be rolling for this highly anticipated Sunday night prime time game.

Devin Hester Twitters He's Expecting a Baby Boy: A New Cub for the Chicago Bear

Chicago Bears player Devin Hester is expecting a new born son in the near future.

Hester announced on Twitter today, “Man I'm at the doctor checkin on my soon to be new born baby boy and he is just kickin so much now!!!!!”

Devin Hester is a wide receiver and return specialist for the Chicago Bears. He is an alumnus of the University of Miami, where he became the first person in the university’s recent history to play on all three teams of American football (offense, defense, special teams).

Hester began his professional career with the Bears in 2006, and quickly made an impact as a kick returner. Dubbed the "Windy City Flyer" and "Anytime," Hester holds the league's all-time record for most kicks returned for a touchdown in a season.

Can The Detroit Lions Beat The Chicago Bears? Yes They Can.

Coach Lovie Smith and the Bears will look to win their third straight game Sunday, when they battle the Detroit Lions at Soldier Field in Chicago.

All Pro QB, Jay Cutler, showed his Pro Bowl skills against the Seahawks when he engineered a late scoring drive- that included a quick slant to Devin Hester- resulting in a touchdown with 1:52 left in the game.

He completed 21 of 27 passes for 247 yards with 3 TD's, 1 interception and a 126.4 passer rating.

The “clipped winged” Seahawks played without seven starters that included quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, tackle Walter Jones and middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu.

Early on, the Bears played sloppy again, as they did against the Steelers in week two. They were plagued by mistakes that reflected the 13-0 score. Bears fans feared the worst when Charles Tillman missed a tackle on a screen pass, enabling Julius Jones to dash 39 yards for a TD on Seattle’s first possession.

Despite the early struggles, the Bears were down, but not out.

They capitalized on two missed field goals by the Seahawks Olindo Mare and started to get the band back together. Jay Cutler then hit Greg Olson, Johnny Knox and Devin Hester for touchdowns, showing that the Bears receiver corps is playing beyond expectations.

The Bears defense responded and stepped up to the plate. After generating just one takeaway in the first two and a half games, the unit forced two turnovers in the first eight minutes of the third quarter.

Daniel Manning stripped the ball from Seahawks receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh after a 5-yard reception and Adewale Ogunleye recovered at the Seattle 42. Houshmandzadeh made comments before the game about his play making abilities, because he was bitter that Chicago made no effort to recruit him to the Bears. Fumbling the football just showed actions are louder then words.

Lions end winless streak

After two years of not winning a game, the Lions recorded a victory over the Washington Redskins to stop the NFL’s longest losing streak in history.

The Washington Redskins are a bad team; however, Detroit finally shows that it’s not impossible to win games. Led by rookie QB Matthew Stafford who went 21-of-36 for 241 yards, 1 TD and 0 interceptions, the Lions won 19-14.

It was a win, and the Lions played well most of the game, however, they almost let the Redskins sneak away in the final seconds.

The 'Skins pulled within five points on Campbell’s second TD pass with 2:36 left in the game, but couldn’t prevent the Lions from picking up a first down that ran time off the clock and cost them three timeouts.

Lions try for second straight victory at Soldier Field.

In recent years, Detroit has played on the road and beat the Chicago Bears in recent history. The last time the Lions won in Soldier Field was October 28, 2007 with a 16-7 victory.

Let’s call a spade a spade.

Detroit just needed to win one game to improve from last year. The question is; can they win again? Yes they can, because that’s the NFL. Any team on any week can win; however, the Chicago Bears are improving and winning games. It’s not likely Detroit wins this game, but it’s not impossible.

Coach Lovie Smith and the Chicago Bears view Detroit as a threat. The Bears organization is too smart to think this is going to be easy. They are preparing for battle at Hallas Hall, as they do every week.

Any given Sunday.

Chicago Bears Look to Maintain Flexibility Against Seattle Seahawks

Coming off a disappointing loss against the 49ers in week two, head coach Jim Mora will bring a defensive mindset to a team that has been more offensively focused, after giving up over 200 yards rushing against the 49ers.

The defense may improve, but the offense may stall against Chicago’s improved D-line. With looming concerns around Matt Hasselbeck’s ability to play with a fractured rib and the poor defensive production against the run, Chicago is primed for a heavy dose of Matt Forte for a week three win.

The biggest strength of this team is the linebackers. Lofa Tatupu, LeRoy Hill and Aaron Curry, all three are tremendously talented. The three have the potential to surpass the Bears linebacker corps as the best in the league after the Bears lost Brian Urlacker for the season.

Another bright spot for this unit is defensive end Lawrence Jackson, who leads the NFC and is tied for third in the league with three sacks. For the most part, the defense did a decent job; however, they gave up some big running plays against the 49ers that cost them the game. The team is thin behind these three with the secondary unit, which showed a big weakness last week—tackling.

Seattle’s offense has been disappointing thus far; many preseason projections had Seattle's unit as top five in the NFC. The injury to quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, (fractured rib) is listed as day-to-day. The team reports x-rays came back negative; however, team doctors reported a rib fracture after looking at the MRI.

The Seahawks running attack, led by Julius Jones, had just eight carries for 11 yards last week and has 128 yards and 1 TD on the season.

The Seahawks passing game is struggling throughout Week Two with Hasselbeck, who has only 376 total passing yard with three TDs and two interceptions.

Wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who was signed this offseason, is an excellent route-runner with good hands, but has not been as productive as he should be. His addition has not helped the offense much. Other additions, like Deion Branch, T.J. Duckett, Nate Burleson and Charlie Frye, are productive when Hasselbeck is under center.

Seattle has no unique play-making dynamic to the offense and will struggle if backup Seneca Wallace play’s against the improving Chicago Bears defensive unit.

The Chicago Bears, led by Jay Cutler may still be adjusting to his new surroundings in Week Three. Even so, the team won a huge game last week against the Steelers with Cutler at the helm. He came under a firestorm in Week One against Green Bay, when he tossed up four interceptions that cost Chicago the game.

Cutler rebounded sharply against the Steelers with no interceptions, and Chicago’s young receiver corps, led by rookie Johnny Knox, also responded by showing great improvement over the previous week.

Chicago is showing new flexibility in the offensive scheme. Traditionally, the one-dimensional team ran the football, and was very conservative in its play-calling. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner can now capitalize against the blitz that often leaves the receivers in one-on-one matchups.

Matt Forte has not been that productive because of Chicago’s new flexibility and confidence in the passing game. It’s important to understand the Chicago still is a run-first offense. If the running game is productive, they will stay with it. If the opposing defenses have success by limiting the running game, they will utilize the passing game. Whatever it takes to win the game, that’s the direction the offense will go, on a game-by-game basis.

The Bears defense looked shaky at the start of last week's game, allowing 144 yards and nine first downs on Pittsburgh’s first two possessions. The Bears yielded just 164 yards and seven points the rest of the game, while rallying for a 17-14 victory over the defending Super Bowl champions.

Roethlisberger picked apart the secondary very early in the game with no pass rush to contend with. The defensive line turned it around by generating consistent pressure with blitz and stunt schemes. Defensive end Alex Brown celebrated two sacks and a hurry that led to a key Charles Tillman interception.

This team is still defined by its defense, primarily at linebacker and with stopping the run. Lance Briggs and Pisa Tinoisamoa are the best of the group. With starter Hunter Hillenmayer now replacing Urlacker, 23 year old, third-year player Nick Roach and speedy Jamar Williams, give the Bears great depth and insurance at the position.

It’s going to a classic battle at Qwest Field. However, the Chicago Bears have the advantage in this contest.

NFL Sports Writer's Power Ranking: 2009 NFC Team Analysis

Ranked 1st: Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are the real deal, and the fans know it, and most importantly the players know it. The talent level on the team is outstanding, with potential to dominate teams if they come together as a unit. What's happened in Chicago is simply this. The players and coaching staff are focused and determined to not just win games, but to win all of their games. It’s not unthinkable, especially when factoring they have the lightest schedule in the NFL, that this team could win all 16 games. They have heart, confidence, and vision to win. They see it, think it, hear it and most of all, they believe it. “They are who we thought they were.” They are a Super Bowl caliber team.

Bears pro bowl QB, Jay Cutler will lead this highly improved and explosive offense, to new possibilities. Cutler has tremendous accuracy and traits that will make Chicago’s unproven receivers better than they are. His mobility makes him effective on rollouts and bootlegs with different launch points that will increase more options for Ron Turner and the play calling. His arm strength allows wider splits on an inside route creating open seams in the coverage, thus allowing the receivers to run away from man coverage. His quick feet allow 7 step drop backs, giving him and the receivers more time to read coverage schemes. The offensive line versatility and depth has greatly improved from 2008. The acquired seven time Pro Bowl left tackle, Orlando Pace will improve the pass protection and open doors for highly talented running back Matt Forte. Forte is a work horse back with excellent field vision. He has good burst speed and gets to the second level quickly. Forte is the complete package. He can run inside and out, catch and block. He celebrated 1238 rushing yards and 63 receptions for 477 yards. Cutler's passing abilities will spread out opposing defenses, and will open the play action pass for better results. Receivers Devin Hester and Earl Bennett will lead the receiving corps in improving production from last year. Hester has drastically improved his route responsibilities and reads. His explosive play making talents and blazing speed make him and Cutler an unstoppable tandem. Tight ends Greg Olson and Desmond Clark will be very productive, and could be the best tightened combo in the league. Olson is 6'5 255 pound end has great hands and agility. His great speed allows Chicago to run him deep to stretch the field, and could run him in the slot. Olson has played 16 games with 54 catches, 574 yards and 5 TD's, and most importantly he seems to improve every week.

The Chicago Bears are still defined by its defense, primarily at linebacker and with stopping the run. Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, and Pisa Tinoisamoa are the best 4-3 line backing corps in the NFL. Former starter Hunter Hillenmayer, Nick Roach and speedy Jamar Williams may also help on the outside to give the Bears great depth. The Bears focused defensively to infuse the defense with some young talent, General manager Jerry Angelo did that with draft picks, defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert in Round 3. The Bears will use Gilbert at defensive tackle behind starter Tommie Harris, who has battled an assortment of injuries the past three seasons. The Bears also drafted good players late with, defensive end Henry Melton, cornerback D.J. Moore, linebacker Marcus Freeman, and safety Al Afalava. The Bears new D-line coach Rod Marinelli will bring the best out of a group that includes Pro Bowl caliber players Adewale Ogunleye, Alex Brown, and Mark Anderson. The Bears secondary is the glaring weakness to opposing teams. It’s an average secondary at best. It’s a play it safe scheme and will not give up the big play. If the defensive line produces to projected levels, this defense will dominate again.

Ranked 2nd: New York Giants

After a great start in 2008 (11-1) the Giants receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg, and missed the rest of the season. The Giants seemed to have lost something more than just Plexico, they lost the passing game with him. Fortunately, Eli Manning can carry this team through anything with his ice veined talent. His cannon arm and escape ability makes him an unstoppable threat to any defense in the league. Manning doesn’t need a Pro Bowl caliber receiver to win games. Truth be told, they don't have number one receiver. Steve Smith, with top draft picks Hakeem Nicks, Ramses Barden, and Mario Manningham will all compete for that role in camp, and most likely thought the season. The Giant's running game “earth, wind , & fire" lost the wind with the departure of Derrick Ward to Tampa. The fire still burns in New York as Ahmad Bradshaw seems poised to take on a bigger role, and most say he's more explosive than Ward. Mr. Earth himself, is back and will use his amazing speed, size, and power to bulldoze strait to the Pro Bowl, provided he stays healthy for the season.

Defensively, they can bring the heat. Steve Spagnuolo, the master mind behind the Giants defense, left for the head coaching position in St Luis. His replacement Sheridan will still run the legendary blitz happy scheme, with some slight adjustment's in the package to streamline the play. The Giants beefed up the pass rushing talent with line backer Michael Boley, defensive tackles Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard, and let’s not forget about Osi Umenyiora, who is healthy after season killer knee injury.

Ranked 3rd: Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles made big changes, from the offensive line to the secondary to retool the team as a Super Bowl contender. Head coach Andy Reid is looking to improve the offensive consistency, as last year the team scored nearly half of the total points in just five games. With no 1000 yard rusher or receiver, McNabb and company will utilize his new offensive line to improve production on rushing and receiving totals. Big is an understatement for this line; however they will have to play together as a unit to be effective. Rookie sensation Desean Jackson is poised to have a break out year, with his game braking abilities and getting more opportunities to make plays. The running game is solid if Westbrook can stay healthy, which has been a concern in the past. The departure of Correll Bulkhaulter could have a negative impact if Westbrook goes down, and the Eagles entire offense would misfire.

On the other side of the ball, the blitz style defense was ranked 3rd in total defense for 2008. The Eagles secondary lost a talented main stay, however the pickup of Ellis Hobbs will be a key replacement. The talented defensive coordinator Jim Johnson leads by mixing scheme's that maximizes player production at each respected position. It’s important to note that Johnson is fighting cancer, and is still slated to coach. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. Jim is a fighter, and if anyone can beat it, believe me it’s Jim.

Ranked 4th: Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals high flying air attack is back, with the signing of Kurt Warner, and retaining MVP talented receivers Larry Fitzgerald (Fitzgerald best in the league) and the skilled Boldin. Although he is not happy with his contract, his production has not been effected. He is a gritty receiver that loves to go over the middle, and bulldoze his way to the end zone. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley has accepted the head coaching position in Kansas City. His position has not been replaced, as Whisenhunt choose to shuffle some things around, and start calling most of the plays himself. The running attack has been historically bad, however rookie Chris "Beanie" Wells, could change that with his size and speed. Hightower still remains as the second back that will see some playing time. However, he does have some durability concerns.

The defense is a concern coming in to 2009. They lack effective pass rushing, and have been hopeless against the run at times. They need intensity and emotion to be effective. Darnell Dockett must step up and lead with emotion and intensity on the front line, and the rest will follow. The linebackers also need to improve pass rushing, and have the ability to get off of blocks. The secondary unit has tremendous talent, and could be the better groups in the league. With the addition of free agent Bryant McFadden, the secondary looks to lead the way with shut down corners like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Ranked 5th: Carolina Panthers

Carolina has one of the league's best two rushing combo's in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Carolina ranked 3rd in the league in rushing, with Williams marching off for 1,515 yards and 18 TD's; and Stewart stacked up 836 yards and 10 TD's. Carolina's success offensively can be contributed from the immensely sized offensive line consisting of LT Jordan Gross, LG Travelle Wharton, C Ryan Kalil, RG Keydrick Vincent, and RT Jeff Otah (Carolina's 2008 1st round pick #19 overall.) Offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson has the ability that few teams have. He can center his entire offensive package using a running attack. The running attack is just as explosive and high powered as passing attack. QB Jake Delhomme has good intangibles, size, and plenty of arm power. The passing attack is effective with pass protection and receiver production. QB Jake Delhomme has good arm strength and overall size, which makes him an effective QB. However, he can be exploited from good secondaries. Steve Smith leads the group, and is still a huge deep threat on the field. Muhsin Muhammad is a solid receiver that commands great coverage. The two will line up opposite sides this season, and should increase the production from last season by all indications. The well groomed receiver Dwayne Jarrett, is slated to be the third starter this year, and looks to be yet another solid receiver, with Smith and Muhammad.

The Panthers have legitimate defense with talented players. The question is can they play under new coordinator Ron Meeks. The former Dungy prodigy runs a play it safe cover 2 package, very close to Lovie Smith in Chicago. Built on speed and fundamental tackling, gives the players mobility without amazing strength and size. More importantly, it requires front 4 pressure that allow the back 7 to keep the ball in front of them at all times. They will use the safety to plug the run, because they won't blitz much. They produced a solid draft, adding players that will provide immediate value in 2009. Florida State DE Everette Brown is a premier pass rusher who will be able to provide pressure opposite Julius Peppers. SS Sherrod Martin, RB Mike Goodson, FB Tony Fiammetta, and G Duke Robinson all were outstanding selections for Carolina in the Draft. The defense is very athletic, and under the new command of Meeks, I look for it to get even better. Carolina has a brutal schedule featuring 13 teams that finish .500 or better in our projections. They play seven games against 2008 playoff teams and nine games against teams in our 2009 playoffs. There are minor deficiencies about every team in the NFL. When playing this schedule even the little things will be exploited throughout the season.

Ranked 6th: Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta 2008 performance was nothing short of outstanding. They had no true leading rusher, no playoff proven QB, no tandem top level receivers, no experienced head coach and no experienced General Manager, and yet still managed to make the playoffs. The Falcons are a longevity built team that has real talent, and is hungry to win. With all that being said, it’s fair to say that Atlanta offensive production is questionable for the start of the 2009 season. Atlanta's smash mouth offensive attack, led by the talented Matt Ryan is very unpredictable. They will use trickery and raw talent. Defensively Atlanta's pass rush is not where it should be, and some question the off season moves. To further the problem the linebacker's and DB's have seen big and unpredictable changes. The 4-3 zone scheme will fail if the linebackers aren't aggressive enough. This defense ranked 24th overall and 25th against the run and will be the key factor again this year.

Ranked 7th: Green Bay Packers

Packers signed WR Jennings to a long-term contract extension that was well deserved. Jennings is one of the best wide receivers in the league, averaging 59 catches for 949 yards (16.0 yards-per-reception) in his first three years in the league. Aaron Rodgers is an effective quarterback who has some great weapons within the west coast offense. Donald Driver is coming off of his fifth straight 1,000 yard season. Expect a drop in his production, due to the progression of the talented receivers around him. Tight end Donald Lee is effective in the red zone, and is a trusted target for Rodgers. The other's in this talented group, include second-year players WR Jordy Nelson and TE Jermichael Finley, third-year WR James Jones and third-down back Brandon Jackson, and can produce breakout performances. The Packers have an effective system with talented receivers. They have great break and stride speed after the catch, thus capable of breaking a game-changing play. Their rushing offense is questionable, at best. Production dropped to 3.9 yards-per-carry and disrupted the west coast attack. Grant's true target should be somewhere around at 4 1/2 yards-per-carry. Unfortunately for him and the rest of the team, there are some serious concerns on the offensive line. Rodgers may be able to scramble and make plays in the passing game, but Grant will struggle without guys in front opening holes. The “one back” formation is a common offensive set in the Packers playbook. If the offensive line fails, Grant will struggle for positive yards, and his durability against injury will eventually catch up.

Switching to a 3-4 defense may be the "in thing" to do right now, but it's not an easy transition for the Packers and probably will be more of a liability to the production of this unit. The Packers ranked 26th, against the run and allowed over 131 yards per game in 2008. Coach McCarthy and new defensive coordinator, Don Capers feel confident about the 3-4, and the progress made with player adjustments. The defensive line will benefit with the draft pick of B.J. Raji, who is vital to the future of the Packers as a nose tackle in the team's new 3-4 scheme. With Raji, they hope it will help inside linebackers A.J. Hawk and Nick Barnett improve their play, and also free outside linebackers Aaron Kampman and Clay Matthews to attack the quarterback. The secondary unit led by pro bowl players, Charles Woodson and Nick Collins show good coverage technique, and tackling skills.

Ranked 8th: Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys cleaned house! Tank Johnson, Pacman Jones, and that guy whose initials are T and O. are no longer on the team. Veterans Roy Williams (the safety) and Greg Ellis have left the Cowboys also. Wade Philips stays for know, and again get a chance to coach on the hot seat. The team was disappointed with the offensive production in 2008 with only a 22 point per game average (18th in the league) and just over 107 yards rushing 21st in the league. The Cowboy's have arguably the deepest running back corps in league with Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice. The Cowboy running game will improve in 2009, which will result in a more productive passing game. QB, Tony Romo has unanswered questions at the wide receiver position, and if remains unanswered, it will impact the productivity of the offence. One of the best offensive lines in the league resides he in Dallas, with Jason Witten at TE, newcomer John Phillips, also at TE. Solid sure handed, blocking is the key attribute to offensive side of the ball in Dallas.

With the loss of Greg Ellis, they have a secondary unit that’s very inexperienced. Cowboys gave up both good talent in dealing away both Pacman Jones and veteran Anthony Henry. CB Terrance Newman returns as the only defender in the secondary with significant experience. Dallas replaced mostly-ineffective safeties Roy Williams and Ken Hamlin with Gerald Sensabaugh, who is a slight upgrade. Anthony Henry packed up and went to Detroit, leaving Dallas with five players with only one year of experience. All of them however will compete to take Henry's place. Sensabaugh is a definite starter and it’s a good chance that at least one of the five will get a shot as an NFL-caliber starting cornerback.

Ranked 9th: Minnesota Vikings

The drama is brewing and headlines are flying out of Minnesota. Tarvaris Jackson publicly stated his unhappiness, about Brett Favre’s likely arrival to the Vikings for this season. This could possibly start disrupting the team, and the entire offense. The offensive unit is dead in the water until all this gets worked out. Disruptions like this have been known to cause meltdowns in production on both sides of the ball. Jackson has been inconsistent with his play, and his decision making has been an issue. If Brett Farve makes the move, he will have to adapt to the new system quickly, and efficiently. Favre has been criticized on his accuracy, and his high interception percentages, is nothing new for Brett, and yes he is a gun slinging QB, however a damn good one. Receiver Bernard Berrian gives them the deep ball threat, and draft pick Percy Harvin is dynamic in the slot or the outside receiver role. With all of that, the Vikings have arguably the best back field in the league with MVP potential Adrian Peterson, and the talented Chester Taylor. They create opportunities for this west coast scheme by creating the play action very successful against opposing defenses. If they get production from the QB position, this unit will be tough to stop. My gut tells me Favre will get the starting job, and could bring significant improvement. On the other hand, he could come in and throw 3 interceptions a game. Chicago fans are excited about that possibility.

This defensive line is one of the best in the league, lead by Jared Allen and tackles Pat and Kevin Williams. All three were pro bowl players last season, and have tremendous play making abilities. Relentless pass rushing allows middle linebacker E.J. Henderson to maximize his fierce hitting and excellent coverage skills. The Tampa 2 package led by Coach Frazier, will blitz from every direction and boosts hard hitting corners and solid tackling from every position. The defensive backfield has been prone to the big plays. The concerns for Minnesota are getting free safety Madieu Williams as healthy as possible, hoping second-year strong safety Tyrell Johnson takes a step up, and becomes a solid player. If not, it will be exploited quickly.

Ranked 10th: New Orleans Saints

Drew Brees continues his success over some of the best secondary’s in the league. His offense is a top ranked unit in the in the NFL. Head coach Sean Payton and Brees are tuned to the same drum that beats to one of most explosive offensive attacks in the league. Look for Jeremy Shockey to have a solid season, as Brees' looks to increase passing attempts to him. This offense has tremendous balance and depth. Both the air attack and the running assault are fundamentally sound. With Pierre Thomas, they have a solid rusher, and with Reggie Bush they have a top level speedster. Bush however has some durability concerns and keeping him healthy is a must. New Orleans is brimming with weapons through the air and on the ground. The offensive scheme will have variations in the formation designed to mismatch receivers. The Saints use creative plays designed around Brees' and his ability to find and deliver to open receivers.

The improvement of the defense thus far has been decent; however it's still their most visible weakness, that opposing teams will key in on. The starting defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant should improve, because Bill Johnson utilizes more aggressive and exotic attack scheme. The cover 2 scheme will use a ton of different looks, and blitzing packages to confuse opposing offenses. Jonathan Vilma will lead the linebacker production in the 4-3 defense effectively, however some question his size and bulk may catch up to him with injuries, and or physically outmatched.

Ranked 11th: Seattle Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora has started to pick up the pieces of the clipped wing Seahawks. After a dismal season last year plagued by injuries, horrible player production and bad coaching. The Seahawks look to make a turnaround for 2009 with new coaching and talented players. New offensive coordinator Greg Knapp will keep the core scheme of their "west coast" offense. Seattle will have a balanced offensive attack, with heavy doses of Julius Jones, who has not broke the 1000 yard rushing mark sense 2006. With an aging and questionable Matt Hasselbeck behind center, Seattle will attempt to exploit opposing secondary units with the pickup of TJ. Houshmandzadeh. Teamed up with Branch and Burleson this talented receiver corps does out-match most secondary units, however if Hasselbeck can't get them the ball, it will prove yet another disappointing year.

Defensively Seattle has improved speed and production with the acquisition of outside linebacker Aaron Curry. New coordinator Casey Bradley will find himself with his hands full against talented offensive attack's in the NFC however. This defensive unit has lost all respectability after last year, and has changed its scheme, to a Tampa 2 Zone defense. The new package should be more effective, because of the speed this defensive unit produces.

Ranked 12th: Washington Redskins

Owner Daniel Snyder went on a spending escapade, giving defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth a $100+ million and DeAngelo Hall a $45 million. The crazy thing is, for the most part, with the draft pick Brian Orakpo it all looks to work out defensively. On the offensive side or things, upgrades were drastically needed, and not really addressed. Washington is not effective in downfield passing, which can lead to big plays that can instantly shift games and hide other problem areas. Washington was 24th in the NFL in yards-per-pass-attempt in the 2008. Quarterback Jason Campbell is very smart and even has most of the physical tools needed, but lacks big weapons that can get yards after the catch. Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El will lead the way with Devin Thomas or Malcolm Kelly, if hopes to make the playoffs. The rushing attack has been poor, because of the offensive line production. They rely on Portis to much, and the receivers are in a new system.

Washington may just have a top 5 defense in the league. Haynesworth is impossible to block with one player and almost impossible to stop with two or more. Watch for the sack numbers of ends Phillip Daniels and Andre Carter to increase significantly and for opponents to avoid running up the middle. The offense and the strength of the rest of the division keep Washington from making the playoffs in 2009.

Ranked 13th: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers just cleaned house after the end last season. Jon Gruden and GM Bruce Allen were fired. Veterans Derrick Brooks, Joey Galloway, Warrick Dunn, Cato June, and Ike Hilliard were all released. The Bucs new regime of GM Mark Dominik and head coach Raheem Morris watch a young team battle all year. The Bucs traditionally have anchored the offense on running the ball. Jeff jagodzinski, new offensive coordinator will take a more aggressive approach. The rushing attack, led by Earnest Graham and Derek Ward, could be unproductive because of the questionable line. Byron Leftwich, does not have a guaranteed starting position, however it’s safe to assume he'll ultimately win the battle over Josh McCown, Josh Freeman and others. Leftwich will be considered a temp, until Freeman, the team's 2009 first round pick takes over in the future, yet he could be a great asset to this team.

New head coach Raheem Morris has a strong defensive background and knowledge of the schemes. Ronde Barber and 2nd-year player Aqib Talib will be the starting corners. Talib is poised to break out after sitting behind departing free agent Phillip Buchanon. The Buccaneers finished at an impressive third in the NFL with 22 interceptions and 11th in fewest yards-per-attempt allowed. The secondary is one of the few things intact from last season, which is a good thing if you’re a Bucs fan.

Ranked 14th: Detroit Lions

Just as the car industry in Detroit has collapsed, so has its football club. The good news for Detroit is it can’t get any worse. After a 0-16 season, the Lions were in more need of a federal bailout than, GM and Chrysler. Changes have been made from the top to the bottom including a new face at QB, rookie Matthew Stanford. The only dangerous aspect of Detroit is they will try anything. They have nothing to lose, so predicting what this team might do could back fire against opposing teams.

Let’s call a spade a spade. Detroit just needs to win one game to improve from last year. That win will not come against Chicago, and unfortunately may not come at all again this year. This team is rebuilding, and outside of a few good players like Calvin Johnson and break out D-end Cliff Avril, Detroit will be looking for play makers to fill the starting roles as they struggle through the season.

Ranked 15th: San Francisco 49ers

After finishing the 2008 season 5-2 under new head coach Iron Mike Singletary, San Francisco showed good improvement. The 49ers are better than they have been in a long time, but a tough schedule means they are still a few wins away from the post-season. The problem here is now seventh offensive coordinator in about 7 years, is causing inability for players like Frank Gore, to get adapted to coach's play calling style. That causes confusion and they lose the ability to move the ball. Twice during those seven years, San Francisco has had the league's least productive offense. New coordinator Jimmy Ray will need to pick his starting players, including his QB. The 49ers are reviewing five pivots in camp, though the real battle will boil down to Shaun Hill vs. Alex Smith. The wide receiver position is up in the air and four receivers: Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan, Arnaz Battle and Jason Hill are holdovers that could step up and claim the job. The team also acquired Brandon Jones from Tennessee, and then selected Michael Crabtree when he fell into their laps at the tenth spot in the draft. At this point only TE Vernon Davis and RB Frank Gore are assured their starting jobs. The situation with the rest of the roster might not sort itself out until midseason. One of the biggest concerns is turnovers. The 49ers tied Denver for the worst turnover margin in the league at -17 in 2008. The team had a particular issue with fumbles, losing the ball a league-high 16 times. Shaun Hill is the expected starting quarterback for the majority of the season. He looks to be an effective player, yet had eight interceptions and four fumbles in just nine games.

San Francisco's run defense only allowed 3.8 yards-per-carry last year, ranking the team eighth overall. The 49ers held the NFL's best , the New York Giants, to 3.5 yards-per-carry and the NFL's fourth-leading rusher, Clinton Portis, to just 2.8 yards-per-carry. Inside linebacker Patrick Willis is an outstanding linebacker with good ability to read offensive tendencies. With games against Minnesota, Atlanta, Tennessee and Jacksonville, San Francisco will need its run defense to be at its best to compete out of the division. 49ers have a tuff schedule featuring seven games against 2008 playoff teams.

Ranked 16th: St. Louis Rams

The greatest show on turf is gone. It’s been a long five years since the Rams posted a winning record. After starting their season 0-4, the St. Louis Rams fired Coach Scott Linnehan and replaced him with Jim Haslett. The Rams have made changes to the on-field, including the release of WR Torry Holt, OT Orlando Pace and LB Pisa Tinoisamoa. Holt leaves behind a corps of young WRs that will need a few years before I can say good, while Pace leaves an offensive line that looks ok at best. Tinoisamoa became expendable after the team drafted James Laurinaitis to play in the middle and moved Will Witherspoon from the middle to the weak side. They have battled injury-riddled and inconsistent offensive line. This offseason, they focused on finishing the rebuilding project to help Bulger and Jackson. C Jason Brown comes from Baltimore to help the middle of the line while second overall pick Jason Smith expects to make an impact at tackle. This upgrade in the offensive line, along with a West Coast Offense implemented by Shurmur, should help Bulger and Jackson improve offensive production. (Whatever that’s worth.)

Defensively the defensive line is chronically a weak spot, and still is. The run defense is one of the worst in the league and the pass defense is not any better. That will not change until someone in that organization wakes up. The team plans to stay with the 4-3 scheme without the players it needs to be successful. The bottom line is this. If you’re a Rams fan your season is over already.

Bears Star Linebacker Lance Briggs: Baby Momma's Drama

Chicago Bears star linebacker Lance Briggs may have to turn over financial details regarding his income and his spending details. Included in the records are more possible child support payments to two of his other “baby’s momma’s.”

Enrico Mirabelli, an attorney in Chicago is pushing efforts as a paternity claim by another woman inches forward in Cook County Circuit Court. Lance Briggs ex-girlfriend Brittini Tribbett wants what Briggs is paying out in support for two other children. It’s believed that Briggs may have canceled checks and other documents that point to just how much the other two kids are getting. Briggs signed a $36 million, six-year contract with the Bears in 2008.

Briggs ex-girlfriend, Brittini Tribbett is demanding more child support from Briggs for their nearly 2-year-old daughter named Nariana. She contests that the child is entitled to the same amount of money as if she was living with him. That would provide enough money that two year old Nariana would enjoy a lifestyle as any child whose father earns a substantial income might enjoy. Currently its reported daughter Nariana lives in an apartment with her mother and great-grandmother in Chicago.

It’s rumored that Briggs has three children, including Nariana, born within a year of one another. The problem is, it’s by three different women or “baby’s momma’s.” Briggs' and his attorney have declined to comment on his client's family matters.

Currently, Briggs pays Tribbett $1,500 weekly in temporary child support, and his 2-year-old daughter is living in an apartment in Chicago with her mother and great-grandmother? That’s over $6,000.00 monthly Briggs pays for his daughter and she lives in an apartment? It must be a very nice apartment, for $6000.00 per month.

Chicago Bears Defensive Line Change Name To Rush Men Under Rod Marinelli

Chicago Bears coach, Rod Marinelli changed the sign on the meeting room door from "defensive line" to "rush men." That's the mentality Marinelli, who's known as one of the best D-line coaches in the league. His empowering coaching strategy aim's to get more speed and aggressiveness out of this blend of veterans and youth. The overall goal for 2009 is not to defend, but to disrupt, always be on the move and go up field to pursue.

This is a defensive line group that has tremendous talent and depth. The success of the defensive package depends on effective pass rushing, which it lacked last year. With the exception of Tommie Harris, the defense did not produce to the level of play it needed in 2008. The front four could not get pressure on opposing QB's, witch forced the linebackers closer to the line of scrimmage, and the outside backers could not flare and block the quick slant throwing lanes. Chicago could not blitz when they wanted, instead blitzed, because they were forced to.

The gap-oriented line depends on player assignments, containment, and the simplest things are the most important things. Chicago's defensive package relies on production from its core positions and players. One of the most important player positions in this package is the three technique tackle.

With a productive and healthy Tommie Harris the Bears have one of the better three techniques in the league. Harris performed better than he was credited for last year. When Harris is going well, he's a disruptive force and makes those around him better. He is the under tackle in this system. Harris is a creator of sorts, for himself and others playing with him. In a one-on-one, nobody can stop him. He’s one of the key players in the whole defense package, and the Bears are counting on more from him in 2009.

The interior line production for 2009 starts with Dusty Dvoracek, who has battled numerous injury issues as he has missed 35 games during his three-year career with the Bears. When Dvoracek is healthy, he is outstanding on the interior of the line and does the job to plug up the running lanes.

Rookie Jarron Gilbert, who led the nation in tackles for a loss in college last year, will probably be used extensively on passing downs at both tackle and defensive end depending on the situation and the opponent.

Marcus Harrison, who had an outstanding rookie season impressed the coaching staff. His playing proved his determination and drive, that could make him a Pro-Bowl caliber player in the future. Harrison will be in the rotation and will continue to impress the Bears coaching staff. Anthony Adams made a good impression as well last season and he will also be in the rotation.

Defensive ends were not productive in 2008. The Bears are counting on new line coach Rod Marinelli to bring the best out of a group that includes Alex Brown, Mark Anderson, Adewale Ogunleye, and Israel Idonije.

Ogunley is reported to be in tremendous shape, coming in to the 2009 season. He's a pass rusher with size that he could line up over right tackles and with better coaching direction should show improvement in his production. Ogunleye has seemed to have dropped off a little, as he has not had double digit sacks for a few years. Coach Rod Marinelli stated in a recent interview, "He’s lean and he’s smart. He’s a 60-plus sack guy in his career. We’ve got to get him back up there and get those numbers again."

Alex Brown, who over the past three seasons can't seem to break through and show his pro-bowl caliber Defensive End ability, looks to break that cycle. Coach Marinelli is the magic formula Brown needs to become one of the best pass rush specialist in the league again. Brown always goes hard, and plays with passion, despite the situation the team is in, he plays good football.

Mark Anderson fell off the map since his stellar rookie season. Marinelli will work to develop better inside moves to be an effective pass rusher for Chicago's scheme. The question is, can Marinelli get 2006 production out of Anderson for the 2009 season? I have to say yes, and look for Anderson to be contributor for this team.

Israel Idonije has lost some weight and is primed to take over as a backup at one of the defensive end positions in 2009. After the signing of a contract extension, Idonije comes in poised to play and is arguably one of the most athletic players on the roster. He had a quiet 2008 season but proved his value time and again in being one of the more solid players on the team. His ability to play both tackle and end makes him a very valuable commodity. Look for Idonije to remain a valuable backup on the team, and contribute not only on defense but on special teams.

Henry Melton is an option back-up at Defensive End. The Bears drafted defensive end Henry Melton in the fourth round, however, historically ends rarely make a big contribution as a rookie. Not to say that he will not, but it is not projected at this point.

The Bears have always had one of the NFL’s top-notch defenses year in and year out, although last season was not up to par for the Bears. They were 16th in points allowed with 21.9 points per game, eighth versus the run allowing 3.7 Yards Per Carry, and they were 6th against the pass allowing 6.5 Yards Per Attempt.

One way to measure a team’s success the next season is to review how many of the games they lost were close in the previous season. Of the Bears seven losses last season, six of those losses were by a touchdown or less and three of those games were by a field goal or less.

The 2009 Chicago Bears defense line will get back to form and dominate in the NFL. If the Bears defensive line unit can stay healthy, which is extremely important, I believe they will greatly improve their pass rush with the coaching Rod Marinelli.

The players seem to have a chip on their shoulders. They have something to prove, and all because of Marinelli's empowering coaching strategy.

NFL's Top 10 2009: Head Coach Ranking

The motivation of a team, its preparedness, and general cohesiveness starts with the philosophy and environment that the head coach instills on a NFL team.

What makes a great head coach? My definition of leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it in themselves.

Inspire Trust

You build relationships of trust through both your character and competence and you also extend trust to others and players. You show others that you believe in their capacity to live up to certain expectations, to deliver on promises, and to achieve clarity on key goals.

Clarify Purpose

Great coaches involve their people in the communication process to create the goals to be achieved. If people are involved in the process, they psychologically own it and you create a situation where people are on the same page about what is really important—mission, vision, values, and goals.

Align Systems

This means that you don’t allow there to be conflict between what you say is important and what you measure. Directing other coaches to mold the players for one common goal.

Unleashed Talent

When you inspire trust and share a common purpose with aligned systems, you empower players. Their talent is unleashed so that their capacity, their intelligence, their creativity, and their resourcefulness is utilized. When that happens you found your play maker.

Miami's Tony Sparano (1)

Sparano out-performed every coach in 2008 with out question. He oversaw almost an impossible turnaround, leading Miami from last-place finish in 2007 to a playoff berth in 2008. The former offensive line coach in Dallas, joined Bill Parcells with the Dolphins and the makeover in Miami was just as impressive as in Atlanta.

The Dolphins were 1-15 a year ago before cleaning house, and Sparano guided them to an 11-5 mark that won the AFC East. Only one team has ever improved as much as Miami’s 10-game turnaround: the 1999 Indianapolis Colts. In 2007 Miami’s defense finished 30th for points scored against.

The improved greatly in 2008 and found them self’s in the NFL’s top ten points per game. and 8th best in the league for total sacks. Even special teams enjoyed a top 3 finish on the kick off unit, and 2nd best overall on field goals and extra points made.

New York Giants' Tom Coughlin (2)

Coughlin is a master of sorts playing home going 7-1 for the season. Coughlin’s inability to mold Manning into a consistent quarterback is just one of many achievements. Coughlin learned to listen more attentively to his players and staff.

That increased preparation efforts for the detail-oriented Coughlin. The Giants finished 3rd in total offense averaging 26.7 points per game.

New England's Bill Belichick (3)

His football philosophy minded style works by adjusting player schemes and personnel to the opponent for maximum production. Nobody in the NFL can configure match-ups like Belichick. The ruthless style of play is demanding for players and his coaching staff to maximize the teams overall efficiency and production.

The Patriots finished with an 11-5 record that was impressive, but not enough to get him the top spot.

Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin (4)

He is smart and tough, but the best thing he does is delegate authority. He lets his assistants coach and his players play. He believes in his staff and lets them get the job done. LeBeau was allowed to have hands-on control of the defense proving to be an excellent choice.

Atlanta's Mike Smith (5)

AP NFL Coach of the Year, oversaw sensational turnarounds, leading their teams from last-place finishes in 2007 to playoff berths this year. Smith helped guide Matt Ryan (Football)">quarterback Matt Ryan to the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Smith also had a first-time starter at running back, Michael Turner, who rushed for 1,699 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Smith had to deal with a makeover of the Falcons organization and its image following the incarceration of quarterback Michael Vick for dog fighting and the resignation after 13 games last season by coach Bobby Petrino.

He left Jacksonville, where he was the defensive coordinator, to take on one of the biggest rebuilding challenges in sports.

Tennessee's Jeff Fisher (6)

A yard away from a Super Bowl title, he guided this team through a restructuring phase and back into contention. Tennessee had the second best defense in the league and ranked first in forced fumbles at 23.

Arizona's Ken Whisenhunt (7)

Whisenhunt coached his team to a Super Bowl so that's at top ten spot by its self. Arizona ranked 2nd in NFC points per game, however the defense gave up 26.6 per game and ranked 3rd worst in the NFC. To have that swing and still get your team to the dance is pure coaching talent.

Carolina's John Fox (8)

John Fox has been a question mark for me for years. He enters every season on the hot seat it seems and in 2007 a source told CSTV that UCLA was considering Carolina Panther head coach John Fox to take over the Bruins' football program. He was under heavy gun fire for another disappointing season with the Panthers.

He just witnessed a mass exodus from his staff this off-season and could be the next out the door if his coaching strategy remains unfavorable for that team. Winning the AFC south confirmed however he can control winning.

New Orleans' Sean Payton (9)

Payton showed big offensive stagy improvements in 2008. Some may say New Orleans coach showed great strides given the talent level during his tenure. Payton uses a offensive mind set by ranking 1st in the league for points per game. The defense however giving up 24.6 points a game will not get you a top 5 rank in the coaching polls.

Chicago’s Lovie Smith (10)

Entering his sixth season with the Bears, Smith is 47-37 with two NFC North titles and an NFC Championship during his tenure. That gives the Bears a winning percentage of .625, tied with the Cowboys for sixth-best in the NFL since '05.

Chicago’s offensive off breed approach is creative however the QB spot contributed to less than expected numbers. Chicago’s special team’s continues its great success with out Devin Hester returning.

Chicago still had a winning record of 9-7 and with a credible QB they would have won the NFC North.

Dallas Cowboys Collapse: Engineer Served Federal Prison Time

The Dallas Cowboys took advice from Jeffrey Lawrence Galland, who served federal prison time for drug trafficking and falsified his educational credentials. Jeffrey Galland, was the engineering director of JCI from Las Vegas with no valid engineering license. The company responsible to make major structural reinforcements to the Cowboys practice facility that collapse injured a dozen people.

The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday that the consultant, Jeffrey Lawrence Galland, was engineering director of that project and acknowledged the newspaper's findings, but said his background had no bearing on his ability to help clients. Galland, 42, said JCI president Scott Jacobs, who is a licensed engineer, supervised his Cowboys work.

His company has teamed up extensively in recent years with Canada-based Summit Structures, which built the Cowboys facility in 2003 and oversaw last year's reinforcements. "It is Summit's belief that all employees who worked on this project were qualified to perform the task he or she performed" and were properly licensed, Summit president Nathan Stobbe said in a statement Saturday, the newspaper reported.

Galland provided a written summary of his credentials that says he has a bachelor's degree in physics from Eastern Washington University. The school said he pursued that degree but never graduated. The summary also says he has been working toward a master's degree in structural engineering at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. School records show no sign he ever attended, officials said.

Galland said Saturday that he completed all required credits for the physics degree, but did not receive it after Eastern Washington officials wanted him to take a class that "I felt was unnecessary."

In 1994 Galland was arrested after breaking into a home and pointing a gun at a woman in Great Falls, Mont., police there said. Charges included burglary and assault. One year later, Galland was convicted of burglary in state court.

Galland also pleaded guilty in federal court to using a firearm during a violent crime and conspiring to distribute cocaine and marijuana, court records show.

The practice facility came crashing down in fierce winds May 2, permanently paralyzing a Dallas Cowboys scouting assistant.

2009 Chicago Bears Coach Report: Tampa 2 Defensive Scheme

Lovie Smith, head coach of the Chicago Bears has led the team for six years in Chicago. He will now take the defense to a hands on approach as he will be calling the defense on the sideline. Releasing Babich to focus on player abilities and match-ups. Lovie Smith has a regular season coaching record of 45-35 (.563) Smith celebrates 45 regular season wins and a 2-2 post season record with a NFC title and a Super Bowl appearance are third most in franchise history, trailing only Hall of Famers George Halas and Mike Ditka.

The coaching staff for the 2009 season has basically stayed the same offensively. On the defensive side of the ball the Bears added Rod Marinelli, the former head coach of the Detroit Lions. In Marinelli’s three seasons in Detroit, the Lions compiled a 10-38 record. The Lions seven wins in 2007 under Marinelli were the most for the franchise since 2000.

Bob Babich enters his third season as Chicago’s defensive coordinator and his sixth year as an assistant coach with the team after overseeing a defense that finished below expectations. Babich assumed responsibility of the Bears defense on February 20, 2007 after three seasons as the team’s linebackers coach.

Marinelli was fired from his position as head coach on December 29, 2008, one day after coaching the Lions to the worst single-season record in NFL history, 0–16. He was hired to fill the defensive line/assistant head coach position, on January 10, 2009. Marinelli knows a thing or two about coaching the defensive line. In 1996 he went to Tampa and coached the D-line with great success. His style and his commitment to getting the most out of his players worked to develop lineman such as Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice into Pro Bowl caliber players. The Bucs racked up 328.5 sacks during Marinelli's time in Tampa, more than any other franchise. Just how good is he? The top-six single-season sack totals in Tampa Bay franchise history all came while Marinelli served as defensive line coach.

Chicago's defensive scheme will not change much. The Tampa 2 defensive scheme was integrated by Lovie Smith, and has been successful for Chicago. It relay's on player's speed and aggressiveness for its success. Its a scheme that can turn a defense into an offense at the drop of a dime. If a ball lay on the ground, you will not see a Chicago player just lay down and maintain possession. What you will see is Chicago players swarm to it like killer bees on the attack, pick it up and run, while teammates bulldoze offensive players for a clear path to the end zone . That's what Lovie Smith expects from his unit, and that's what Lovie's style of the Tampa 2 is all about.

That aggressive approach is the foundation of the Tampa 2, the style of Cover 2 defense made popular by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Tony Dungy, starting in the mid- to late-1990s. Actually, it all started in the 1970s with Bud Carson's Steelers defenses, for whom Dungy played defensive back. Dungy learned the Cover 2 from Carson. In Cover 2, two safeties play zone (area) coverage, each of them responsible for half of the field. Dungy's Bucs had great success dropping a speedy middle linebacker down the middle of the field to defend the pass, creating a three-deep look, while four often undersized but quick defensive linemen rushed the passer. And so, the Tampa 2 was born.

The magic formula to the Bears Tampa 2 system is not so much of physical aptitude, but the players attitude and aggressiveness. Players don't have the prototypical size of other NFL defenders. Instead, stress is put on speed, smarts and flawless tackling to get the job down.

The success of the scheme is simplicity. What the Tampa 2 teams have figured out is that it isn't what they're doing, as much as it is who is doing it and how. Chicago likes to stop the run with eight players near the line of scrimmage, and on passing downs drop into their Cover 2 zone. Lovie's play it safe scheme, doesn't call for a lot of all-out blitzing with zero coverage (no safety in the middle, corners one-on-one), instead preferring to rely on the defensive line to apply pressure on the quarterback, witch it lacked in 2008.

One of the main reasons the defense struggled last year was the production from the defensive front 4 unit, with the exception of Tommie Harris, did not produce to the level of play it needed for this Tampa 2 scheme to be effective. That proved to be predictable to opposing offenses and was exposed often. Marinelli should help with front 4 production, witch will allow the linebackers an extra 5 yards off the line of scrimmage, and the outside backers will flare and block the quick slant throwing lanes quickly.

Chicago’s production from core positions, is a factor to measure how successful Chicago will be in 2009 defensively. I have ranked them in specific order starting with the most important player position to the least important for the success of Chicago's defense.

Three technique tackle is one of the most important core positions for Chicago's success. With a productive Tommie Harris the Bears have one of the better three techniques in the league. Harris performed better than he was credited for last year. When Harris is going well, he's a disruptive force and makes those around him better. The Bears are counting on more from him in 2009, especially after picking up a $6.67 million roster bonus. San Jose State defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert is slated as a back up for Harris.

Defensive end's were not productive in 2008. The Bears are counting on new line coach Rod Marinelli to bring the best out of a group that includes Alex Brown and Mark Anderson. Many question the contributions Adewale Ogunleye has made since he arrived, but he's pass rusher with size that he could line up over right tackles and with better coaching direction should show improvement in his production. As a side note defensive end Henry Melton is an option back-up.

Middle linebacker, Brian Urlacher would tell you the scheme has taken him away from some of the things he does best. The reason is that Lovie utilizes Urlacher's speed and pass coverage skills to drop back for deep pass coverage, however some have questioned his ability's to do just that. The middle linebacker has to be able to cover deep middle. This takes away the TE down the seam, and allows safeties cheat out and shorten the open window down the outside. The bears did pick up Marcus Freeman Ohio State linebacker who shows impressive ability at any linebacker slot.

Chicago's weak-side linebacker, Lance Briggs one of the best in the game at the spot right now. If the three technique is the signature position in the defense, this is signature position 1B. The prototypical WLB is an undersized player with terrific range. Coming unblocked in a lot of situations, the weak-side linebacker will pile up tackles and help in coverage.

The cover corner must improve production. Charles Tillman had a rocky 2008 season that was inhibited by injuries to both shoulders, one that required surgery. His status as a left cornerback is the primary reason why Smith will not entertain the idea of moving him to free safety. A healthy Tillman is a physical performer who can play as a top level corner in the NFL. Chicago likes to substitute a pass-rushing end in this spot, but the value of a top corner like Tillman cannot be overstated.

Free safety is where the Bears could come up short. They still don't have a player with the range to be a threat in coverage. The free safety must have the speed to cover a lot of ground as the center fielder of the defense. Craig Steltz or Corey Graham will most likely man the position. After playing corner back during his first two NFL seasons in Chicago, Corey Graham is the likely starter. The good news is that the Tampa-2 does make the safety position the most critical position in its scheme, in fact its arguably one of the least, because there's not many man to man plays. That's why Lovie doesn't put near the significance on a safety as he does a cornerback.

The cover-2 ( Tampa-2) is a successful scheme and boosts more strategy. Its fair to say however that teams have had some success getting around it. Its not fair to say that its not productive. Teams have found their way around every defensive scheme played in the NFL. The Bears Tampa 2 relies very heavily on excellent play from certain positions. That is a concern for Chicago for a couple reasons. First If those players get hurt or decline because of old injuries and/or age, the defense will simply not work. Second if a player consistently plays bad, it gets exposed like wild fire, and every opposing team will adapt very quickly to capitalize. Example: Chicago could not defend the slant pass last year, and everybody and their brothers threw them.

The Bears cover 2, 2 gap, is a soft defense, and will be in trouble if the front 4 can not get pressure on the QB. The defense basically becomes prevent lite against a unproven secondary group. The defense is younger and quicker and improved on the pass rush. If the front line improves to 2006 production type, they will be a top three defense in the league.

The Bears announced that they will conduct training camp from July 31 through Aug. 21 at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais. That's when we will see the true scope of this.

The Chicago Bears Are a Top Five Team in the League for the 2009 Season

The Chicago Bears had many questions concerning the roster and their upcoming 2009 season. The biggest questions are what to expect from Kyle Orton and the quarterback position. Answer: Not much!

In a matter of hours, General Manager Jerry Angelo added two very solid players in Jay Cutler and Orlando Pace.

Giving Up first round draft picks seemed to be a risky move in the NFL news media, however with rocky history with first-round picks like David Terrell, Cedric Benson, Rex Grossman, and Michael Haynes, to name a few, Bears fans all agree it was a god send and the heavens above heard thousands of fans say "thank god, thank you lord." Jay Cutler was a first round pick (11th) overall in 2006 draft by the Denver Broncos.

In 2008 he enjoyed career highs in passing yards (4,526) and 25 Touchdowns and also celebrated a trip to the pro-bowl. Still, there were more problems than just quarterback on this team for the 2009 season.

Now that the QB position will throw mind blowing numbers, and with a upgraded offensive line, Matt Forte can have an outstanding rushing season. The question is who's going to be able to catch the ball?

Receivers Devin Hester, Earl Bennett and Rashied Davis look to be the core of the receiving squad. Not very productive last year would be a huge understatement for this group; however it’s hard to pin that solely on the receivers with Kyle Orton under center. Tight ends Greg Olson and Desmond Clark will return for the 2009 season and both showed improvement at their respected positions. The Bears also signed veteran tight end Michael Gaines to better the tight end play.

Angelo did as much as he could have with the late picks in the 2009 draft. Wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias is going to have to step onto the field as a rookie, and he was a great value pick where the Bears got him.

The 6', 210 pounder, caught 202 passes for 2,821 yards and 19 touchdowns for Oklahoma, including 10 TD’s as a senior. Hehas the potential to compete for a starting position and could develop to the number 3 receiver quickly.

The bears also added speed with Abilene Christian wide receiver, Johnny Knox. Knox ran the third-fastest time in the fastest 40-yard dash at the scouting combine at 4.34 seconds. The Bears must get better at the wide out positions, and will need a leader to step up and be the primary number one receiver.

The Chicago Bears last season ranked fifth in the league, on third down conversions. That key statistic is very important factor coming in to the 2009 season. It shows the offense is productive in high pressure situations, and they can get the job done when needed.

Also, its important to highlight the Bears showed strength last year in three key statistical categories—yards per rush, turnovers and yards per pass. The Bears running game with Matt Forte will be very productive, and if a receiver with open field skills like, Devin Hester finds his role early in the season, this offense can be very explosive.

The Chicago defense may not have given up the big runs or the big passes last season; however they couldn't get off the field at critical times. The Bears focused defensively on draft day, the goal was to infuse the defense with some young talent, General manager Jerry Angelo did that with draft picks, San Jose State defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert in round three.

The Bears will use Gilbert at defensive tackle behind starter Tommie Harris, who has battled an assortment of injuries the past three seasons. Gilbert made 24 college starts at defensive end and 12 at defensive tackle. The Bears also drafted good players late with, Texas defensive end Henry Melton and Vanderbilt corner-back D.J. Moore in Round 4, Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman in round five and Oregon State safety Al Afalava in round six.

The Bears blitzed more than any team in the league. Most of them run blitzes to help out a defensive front that couldn't stop the run on its own. The Bears succeeded against the run because they stacked an eighth defender in the box, however they struggled stopping the pass because of it.

The defensive front failed to apply adequate pressure to the QB’s. The addition of Gilbert, who made 21 1/2 sacks for San Jose State, including 9 1/2 his senior year, should help correct that problem. Fortunately they didn't give up the deep ball often because that is what the Tampa-2 stops, however hey did get picked apart by short passing attacks.

The Bears do have outstanding special teams play. Kicker Robbie Gould was outstanding last year missing only three field goals. Key players like Israel Idonije, leading the 3 & 4 man wedges, (that is now banned) and Danieal Manning who had the NFC’s highest kickoff return average of 29.7 yards, gives Chicago a huge advantage for the 2009 season.

This season should feature an exciting division race, with the top three teams in the mix. There is a lot to like about each of their division rivals' drafts. The Packers got two potential starters for their new, 3-4 defense and addressed some of their needs on the offensive line.

The Vikings got one of the true playmakers in this draft, a Caterpillar bulldozer at right tackle, and some solid depth to their defense. The Lions added talent from the top of their draft to the very bottom; though, let's face it, they still have a long way to go.

The Bears have a light schedule statistically, however the season kicks off at Green Bay on primetime television and play week two at home against the defending champion Steelers.

The toughest stretch is from week 10 to week 16, they play at San Fransisco on primetime versus former Bear great Mike Singletary, versus the Eagles on Sunday Night Football, at Minnesota, versus Green Bay, at Baltimore and week 16 at home on Monday Night Football against Adrian Peterson and the Vikings. The Bears play six games against the Lions, Packers and Vikings and will take care of business in the NFC North quickly.

The Bears made a statement with the addition of Pro Bowl QB Jay Cutler, and a decent draft considering they had no first round pick. Orlando Pace should add improved front protection for the O-line. The defense is younger and quicker and improved on the pass rush. I believe the Bears will get off to a fast start this season, due to the light schedule, and because of the talent level of the players on this team.

I see the Chicago Bears winning NFC North division, and have a viable shot of taking the NFC division title. The Chicago Bears are a top five team in the league for the 2009 season, and will be a strong contender for the Lombardi Trophy.
