Marian Hossa To Undergo Surgery

In what has to be a completely devastating blow to all Chicago Blackhawks fans, the team made an unfortunate announcement regarding free agent acquisition Marian Hossa.

Approximately two weeks ago, it was revealed that Hossa, who received a hero's welcome when introduced in Chicago, has a shoulder injury.

This 30 year-old, who has scored over 700 points in more than 700 games injured his shoulder in last spring’s playoffs and has decided, after weeks of therapy, to take the next step: Surgery.

“Marian’s injury did not respond sufficiently to our non-operative treatment over the last three weeks, so we have collectively decided today to go ahead with the surgery,” said Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman. “Marian is a franchise player, and we want what is best for him and the Chicago Blackhawks long-term. This was a mutual decision, and we feel very confident is the right one.”

The injury was diagnosed as a small right rotator cuff tear.

Hossa, who earlier this month signed a lucrative 12-year contract, will be going under the knife on Friday and is facing a four-month recovery period.

Even though doctors have stressed that the shoulder will be 100 percent after he recovers, one has to wonder how missing training camp and the first month or so of the regular season will affect his game.

Kris Letang Takes Defensive Reigns for Pittsburgh Penguins

When the average hockey fan thinks of the young and improving players on the Pittsburgh Penguins such names as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jordan Staal come to mind.

While they are all without doubt talented hockey players, another improving young player who often gets overlooked is 22-year-old defenseman Kris Letang. This 2005 Penguins third-round, draft pick, who is entering his third season, saw his point production drastically improve from 17 in his rookie campaign to 33 last year.

This Montreal native, who doesn’t shy away from playing physically, will be taking on an even bigger role with Pittsburgh this coming season after management failed to re-sign two of their top defensive defenseman: Rob Scuderi and Hall Gill.

“I think we will be expecting more from Alex Goligoski (another young Pens defenseman) and Kris Letang,” General Manager Ray Shero said. “Those are two younger guys that we have a lot of faith in. They’re going to move up [on the depth charts] and get more ice time.”

Shero and the rest of management have to eluded in Letang’s performance on the big stage this past spring, as he resembled an experienced veteran in raking up 13 points and a plus-1 rating. As the playoffs progressed, Letang was seeing more ice time and found himself, on some occasions, killing crucial penalties. Reflecting on helping the Penguins win their third Stanley Cup in franchise, history Letang gave a lot of credit to Gill, who signed this offseason with the Montreal Canadiens, and Scuderi, who signed with the Los Angeles Kings.

“They did a great job,” Letang said. “They were our shutdown defenceman during the whole playoffs. We’re going to build with some other guys and have a good team again.”

Currently, Letang is relaxing and waiting, anxiously, to enjoy his day with the Stanley Cup. He doesn’t mind the short summer, but he knows that pretty soon it will be time to train and prepare for what will be the most important season to date in his budding career. The Penguins had success in re-signing forwards Craig Adams, Bill Guerin, and Rusian Fedotenko.

On the backend, however, despite having an emerging Letang, it will be hard to fill the shoes of Gill, who was a plus-11, and Scuderi, who was an impressive plus-23. Still, watching the emergence of Letang will be an entertaining storyline to follow in Pittsburgh this coming season.

Sergei Zubov on the Hunt for a Team

Even though he has lost a step and only played 10 games last season due to a nagging hip injury, there are still plenty of teams lining up to sign two-time Stanley Cup winner Sergei Zubov.

This 39-year-old defenseman, who was originally a fifth round draft choice by the New York Rangers way back in 1990, has spent the past 12 seasons thrilling fans in Dallas and played a key role in helping the Stars win their first Stanley Cup in 1999.

Realizing that he is in the stretch run of his stellar career, Zubov, who won his first Cup in 1994 with the Rangers, has recently voiced a desire for a change of scenery.

“Sergei wants to be in a winning environment no matter where that might be,” agent Jay Grossman said about the highest-scoring Russian blue-liner who has 771 career points. “He’s had a great run there.”

If he does, indeed, sign elsewhere this offseason, fans will likely most remember him for that magical, stellar 1999 playoff spring when he scored 13 points and was solid defensively in posting a +13.

Since scoring 71 points in 2006, Zubov has seen his production sharply decline. Still, according to reports, there are nine teams, including the New York Rangers, who are very interested in signing Zubov, who recently got a clean bill of health. He brings veteran experience and can still produce on the power play, which attracts a lot of teams.

Still, the Stars have not given up the possibility of convincing the veteran to play another year in the Lone Star State.

“We have not closed the door on Sergei,” said new Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk.

This offseason, the Stars, who missed the playoffs this past season, have undergone a couple of off-ice changes, which also includes a new coach in Marc Crawford.

Rumors have been circulating that Zubov, who made $5.35 million last season, will sign with the Rangers.

Jacques Lemaire Is New Devils Coach

On Monday afternoon Jacques Lemaire proved that, yes, you can in fact go home again.

After the 63-year-old stepped down this spring as the Minnesota Wild coach, New Jersey Devils General Manager Lou Lamoriello seized the opportunity to hire Lemaire for a second stint behind the Devils bench.

Lemaire, who had a Hall of Fame playing career with the Montreal Canadiens, was instrumental in leading the Devils to their first Stanley Cup back in 1995.

“Jacques Lemaire is one of the most respected coaches in the game,” Lamoriello said. “He is a teacher and a communicator, and knows what it takes to have success.”

Lemaire, who is known for teaching the neutral zone trap and emphasizing solid defensive play, has been the head coach in Minnesota since day one in 2000 when they came into the league. After leading them to the playoffs three times during his tenure, Lemaire decided it was time for a change of scenery.

“Last year, right after the season, I never did close the door on coaching,” he said. “I just said that my time in Minnesota is over and it’s time to go on and do something else. I’ve heard a lot of ex-coaches say often that it is really hard to get out of this because we love the game and it is exciting and fun. Well, that’s what I got watching the playoffs.”

Negotiations between Lamoriello and Lemaire began just before the draft and concluded last weekend. Terms were not disclosed, but Lemaire, who has a coaching record of 538-415-176 in 14 seasons with the Canadiens, Devils, and Wild, wants to coach for at least the next two years.

“When you’ve been coaching for 15 years, when you look at a team, you want to have a chance to win the Cup, there is no doubt about that,” Lemaire said. “Especially in my situation, this would be a great thing to have a chance. Don’t forget there are 30 teams saying the same thing. I want a chance to be part of this and if there is a chance I would love to get another one.”

Looking up and down the Devils' roster, Lemaire is taking over for a team that won a franchise record 51 games before bowing out of the playoffs in seven games against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Joe Sakic Calls it a Day!

The lasting image I’ll always have of Joe Sakic occurred in 2001 when, after winning the 2001 Stanley Cup, the Colorado Avalanche captain displayed what kind of classy person he is when, after accepting the Cup from commissioner Gary Bettman, he right away gave it to 22-year veteran and first-time winner Ray Bourque.

Sakic, who officially retired last week after a storied 20-season career with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche, has electrified fans in what was a Hall-of-Fame career, which included such accomplishments as two Stanley Cups—1996 and 2001, and an Olympic Gold Medal—2002. In 2001, he had a magical season and was awarded with the Hart, Lady Byng, Lester B. Person, and Bud Light Plus-Minus Awards. In ’96 he also won the Conn Smythe after enjoying a magical playoff run of 34 points in leading the franchise to their first Stanley Cup win.

Sakic, who enjoyed his best season in ’96 when he scored 120 points, has often been described by former teammates as being humble and a complete team-player. That trait of being a team-player was never more evident than that magical moment when he gave the Cup to an excited Bourque, who was playing in his final NHL season in a career that was mostly spent with the Boston Bruins.

Super Joe, as he is at times affectionately called, or Burnaby Joe, was always known for his deadly snap-shot that played a huge role in this Burnaby BC native's scoring 625 career goals. At times he seemed invincible in scoring goals and producing 1,641 career points, but in the end he couldn’t beat out father time. Heading into last season Sakic, who ended up to play only 15 games due to injuries, had the goal of playing in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. When he suffered a herniated disk and had to undergo back surgery last year Sakic, now 40 years old, began thinking seriously about hanging up the skates.

“I didn’t think I could be the player I wanted to be,” Sakic said. “I always said to myself that the minute I thought I’d slipped, and not be the player I wanted to be, it was time for me to go.”

Not surprisingly, after Sakic, who captained the Nordiques/Avalache for 16-straight seasons, announced his retirement, the franchise announced that Sakic’s number 19 jersey would be raised to the rafters, where it will join goalie Patrick Roy’s jersey along with defenceman Raymond Bourque.

“He’s such a great leader,” former Avalanche teammate Paul Stastny said. “He made the team top-notch.”

Only Gordie Howe with 1,809, Steve Yzerman with 1,755, Mario Lemieux with 1,723 and Wayne Gretzky with 1,669 have scored more points with one franchise than Sakic’s 1,641 points.

“I’m sad to see him leave the game,” former teammate Peter Forsberg said. “I’m glad I got the chance to play alongside him for many years…He’s a very classy person and a great team leader.”

Roberto Luongo is Going Nowhere!

Vancouver Canuck fans can rejoice with the welcoming news that their all-star goalie Roberto Luongo, who is entering the final year of his contract doesn’t want to leave town. In an era where teams lose various superstars due to free agency, Luongo, who is a 10- year veteran, is an elite goaltender who is looking for a five-year deal from the Canucks worth at least $8 million a season.

This 30 year old, who signed with the Canucks in June 2006, is willing to take a discount if it will help the Canucks management construct a more competitive hockey team. Still, Luongo wants to be among the highest paid goalies.

“The way Roberto wants to go, he doesn’t want to hit the jackpot, he wants to have a good team,” his agent Gilles Lupien said. “And by doing that, you have to work with the team. We’re looking for a bit more money, but nothing that would strangle the team. I think we’re going forward to have a deal done in the future.”

This Montreal native has bounced around from the Islanders to the Florida Panthers and finally the Canucks. This past season Luongo had some groin issues, which sidelined him for 24 games. He dressed for 54 games and managed to win 33 while posting an impressive 2.34 GAA. In his career, Luongo already has 230 wins.

Sergei Federov Signs in Metallurg Magnitogorsk

Three-time Stanley Cup winner Sergei Fedorov—who made his mark in the NHL by scoring 483 career goals along with 1,179 total points in a 19-year career—has decided to go back home to the Russian league and be reunited with his younger brother.

The 39-year-old, who was taken by the Red Wings in the fourth round back in 1989, enjoyed his best seasons in Detroit where in 1994 he had a career season in producing 120 points and an impressive +48 rating.

Following that season, Fedorov was awarded the Lester B. Pearson Award, which goes to the best player voted on by the NHLPA and the Frank J. Selke Trophy for best defensive forward.

He would also win the award two years later. Fedorov—who this week signed a two- year contract to play with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Continental Hockey League—will be remembered for his strong skating and electrifying rushes which over his career got him selected to play in six All-Star Games.

Fedorov played on the famed "Russian" line while in Detroit alongside fellow Russians Vladimir Konstantinov, Slava Kozlov, Slava Fetisov and Igor Larionov.

A major reason why he is returning home to play in the Continental League is to make his father’s life long wish come true of watching his two sons Sergei and Fedor play as line mates.

During post-season play Fedorov built a reputation of producing as he posted 52 goals and 176 points over his career.

Fedorov has played with the Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, Anaheim Mighty Ducks and most recently, the Washington Capitals.

Tomas Karberle on the Blocks?

Once again, as we inch closer to the NHL Entry Draft in Montreal, various rumors have taken on a life of their own involving possible blockbuster trades that may happen on the draft floor this coming weekend.

In past weeks, such names as Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Briere, Ottawa Senators forwards Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley, and Los Angeles Kings talented forward Alexander Frolov, are just some of the big names being bounded about.

On Thursday, another name was added to the mix as Toronto Maple Leafs veteran defenceman Tomas Kaberle, the longest serving member of the current Leafs team, is apparently close to leaving town.

This 11-year veteran is coming off a down season that saw him score only 31 points in 57 games. Despite the sub-par season, Kaberle has for years been the undisputed leader on the Leafs' blue line.

At last seasons' trade deadline, general manager Brian Burke came out publicly in saying that he will not trade the veteran defenceman. On Thursday, it was reported that Burke received a tempting offer for the 31 year-old power play specialist from a team that didn’t want to be identified.

Besides this certain team, who is believed to be also pursuing Florida Panthers free agent Jay Bouweester, there are also a handful of other teams who have made Burke a tempting offer for the blue liner.

Heading into the off-season, talk was that the Leafs were not going to deal Kaberle until after July 1st in hopes of maximizing a deal from a team who lost out on the Bouweester sweepstakes.

These rumors are reporting that the Leafs are seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on a Kaberle deal this coming weekend.

Mike Babcock Will Lead Team Canada in 2010

Team Canada will have a new body behind their bench come February when they compete in Vancouver at the much-anticipated 2010 Olympics.

As opposed to years past when Canada’s Olympic teams had names such as Pat Quinn, Ken Hitchcock, and Marc Crawford leading the charge, it was announced that the man who will lead the team is not surprisingly Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock.

The 46 year-old Babcock is a former McGill University defenseman, and current head coach of the Detroit RedWings. He has led the Wings to two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals, winning the Cup two springs ago. He will be officially announced as head coach on Thursday by executive director Steve Yzerman, during a press conference in Montreal.

Babcock first turned heads back in 2003 when, as a rookie coach, he led the underdog Anaheim Ducks all the way to a seventh game in the Stanley Cup finals. Since then, his reputation has soared. He has registered an impressive 282-139-71 all-time record and a total of 58 wins in the post season.

Babcock, who is signed to a long-term contract with the Wings, has an impressive resume that also includes four straight seasons of leading the Wings to 50 or more victories.

On the international stage, he led Canada to the 2004 World Championship.

Team USA, Canada’s chief rival, will have current Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson behind their bench this February in Vancouver.

Is Dany Heatley Heading to Los Angeles?

Heading into this weekends NHL Entry Draft in Montreal, don’t be surprised if the Ottawa Senators, who will pick ninth, select former London Knight’s scoring forward Nazem Khadri.

Ottawa drastically underachieved this past season, missing the playoffs with 83 points. In three of the last five years, they have consistently used their first pick to select a defenseman.

Even though general manager Bryan Murray isn’t tipping his hand, it’s pretty evident that with two-time 50 goal scorer Dany Heatley wanting out of Ottawa, the team will desperately need help in scoring, not defense.

Rumors have been spreading that the Los Angeles Kings are serious about wanting the veteran forward, but Murray wouldn’t confirm anything.

“Nobody has come to me and said they’ll get me a high pick at this point in time,” Murray said. “I’ve had a couple of teams that are picking before us that have had some interest (but) until I know what I have in my hand, it’s not going to affect anything.”

Days away from what will be his third draft with the Senators, Murray insists that he won’t let the Heatley situation affect whom Ottawa selects.

Using the strategy of rebuilding through the draft, Murray insists that he will take the best player available no matter what position they play.

Still, all bets are on the Senators picking Khadri to replace the offence that will be lost with Heatley's eventual departure.

Chris Chelios in Chicago, Again?

The only thing about being a sports fan that I find super painful is when a great athlete can’t admit that it’s time to retire.

Being a longtime Buffalo Sabres fan, I always admired winger Dave Andreychuk who didn’t exactly have the smoothest skating stride but still carved out a borderline Hall of Fame career. Taken 16th overall in 1982, this Hamilton, Ontario native netted 649 goals in a 23-year career that really should have only been 22.

Even though I followed his every move with pure enjoyment and anticipation during his career which saw him play for the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, and the Tampa Bay Lightning, I was rooting for him to do the right thing and retire after the 2004 season.

At that time Andreychuk was 41 years old and was enjoying the excitement which comes with winning the Stanley Cup. During that magical spring run to the Stanley Cup in 2004, Andreychuk, who was with the Lightning, registered 14 points in 23 playoff games and finally got to fulfill his boyhood dream of lifting Lord Stanley. At that moment I remember thinking that’s the perfect way to retire and with news of a possible lockout in the fall I was happy that one of my favorite players persevered long enough to finally get his Stanley Cup ring.

A year after the lockout I thought it was the biggest mistake and couldn’t believe that this winger, who played his junior hockey for the Oshawa Generals, was coming back with the Lightning. I don’t mean to sound so dramatic but it tore my heart out when after 42 games in 2006, Tampa Bay waived the 42-year-old, who only had six goals in that point of the season.

Andreychuk, who had his best goal-scoring season in 1994 with 53, suffered the indignity of either being shipped down to Springfield or retiring. That’s when he finally made the decision to retire.

Fast forward to 2009 and the exact same thing is happening with this time a sure Hall of Famer in 47-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios. This 26-year veteran, who is a three-time Stanley Cup winner, found out on Monday from Wings General Manager Ken Holland that the team won’t resign him.

“I met with Chelios and told him we would not be offering him a contract,” Holland said. “He wants to play again. I really think that he does have another year in him. I think he can play 10 or 15 minutes. I think he can play on a third pair.”

Chelios, who has 948 career points didn’t score a point in 28 games last season but finished with a +1 rating. It was a great ride for Chelios and now is the time for this old warrior to step down and announce his official retirement. In the last week or so, rumors have been circulating that he will be going to Chicago for a second stint with the Blackhawks.

Chris Chelios Will Play for USA in 2010

Even though he is no youngster at 47 years of age, veteran defenseman Chris Chelios has confirmed that he has indeed been asked by General Manager Brian Burke to join the US Hockey squad as they take another run at winning a gold medal at the upcoming 2010 Olympics.

For all you hockey fans who might be scratching your heads in bewilderment, let me explain that Chelios—who played for US at the Nagano Salt Lake and Turin games—has been courted this time around for an off-ice position.

“The greatest warrior of all was Chelly,” said Burke.

Even though no specific role has been assigned, Burke insisted that he somehow wants him involved. This multiple Stanley Cup winner who is ranked No. 1 among defenseman for games played in the regular season and playoffs is still planning on coming back next season. With his contract expired in Detroit rumors have been circulating that the Chicago native might just return home for a second stint with the Blackhawks.

Mats Sundin Will Not Play for Sweden

Veteran forward Mats Sundin, who played a huge role in helping Sweden win gold at the 2006 Turin Olympics made it clear on Sunday that he will not be playing this February for the defending champions.

“There will be no Olympics in Vancouver for me next year,” Sundin said, who has scored 564 career goals in his 18-year NHL career. “I think it’s time that the next generation take over. We have many good players.”

Last summer, this 38-year-old who had his best years as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs wasn’t sure if he wanted to retire from the NHL or not. After being courted by several teams including the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and the Ottawa Senators, Sundin, who in 2008 won the Mark Messier Leadership Award, decided he had some gas left in the tank and on December 18 signed with the Vancouver Canucks.

In 41 regular season games in Vancouver, Sundin registered a respectable 28 points and added eight more points in the postseason. He’s not sure about whether he’ll come back this coming season but he does know that now is definitely his time to retire from team Sweden.

“It was the perfect ending of a long career for Sweden, to lead the Swedish team against the best in the world and win Olympic gold for the first time when all teams had their stars playing,” Sundin said. “I could not have dreamed of a better scenario for my last game.”

With regards to coming back next season, Sundin responded that his decision will definitely come in the next couple of weeks.

Guy LaFleur Now Has a Criminal Record

This was the kind of record that former NHL superstar Guy Lafleur could have done without. This five time Stanley Cup winner with the Montreal Canadiens who was a standout in scoring over 500 goals during a hall of fame career had his sentence handed down to him in a Montreal courtroom on Thursday afternoon. This 57 year-old from Thurso, Quebec ,who during his playing days was nicknamed ‘The Flower’ got into legal trouble when he was caught back in 2007 lying in court for the purpose of protecting his 22 year old son Mark from going back to jail.

In January 2007, Mark got into trouble with the law and was facing charges of assault and sexual assault of a 17 year-old. Part of the charges came from the fact that he was screaming death threats against her. After eventually going to a halfway house for some time Mark Lafleur was granted probation with the condition that he followed a 12:30 court imposed curfew where he had to be at his parents’ house for the night.

Unfortunately this is where the elder Lafleur got himself into some trouble. At first Guy Lafleur stated in court that his son obeyed and respected the fact that he had to be home at a certain time. At a later court hearing for Mark this hall of famer changed his story.

“He respected it except for twice, when he asked if he could go to a hotel,” Lafleur who twice broke the law by driving him to a hotel to be with his 16 year-old girlfriend said. “I thought that at 22 he had a right to some intimacy.” When asked why he didn’t say that originally the senior Lafleur replied “Because I know you have proof that he went there and I didn’t want to hide it.”

On May 1, Lafleur was ruled guilty of giving the contradictory evidence at the bail hearing. On Thursday Lafleur had no expression as the judge handed down a one year suspended sentence and a $100.00 fine. He was also ruled to donate $10,000 to charity. The most damaging part of the sentence being handed down by Quebec court Judge Claude Parent is that Lafleur now has a criminal record.

Mr. Hockey Stands Up for Sidney Crosby

Surfing the various sports websites on Friday afternoon, I was floored and felt pretty special that Mr. Hockey himself (Gordie Howe) believes exactly what I said in an earlier blog pertaining to how Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby didn’t snub the Detroit Red Wings.

I still believe, as I wrote last weekend, that when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup at Joe Louis Arena last Friday, Crosby became overwhelmed with elation and became lost in the moment.

I also believe, that being the kind of person who has trouble saying no, Crosby was late getting in line due to the various media outlets who came on the ice trying to get a sound bite.

While scanning the sites, I became intrigued by an article on tsn.ca. In the article, Howe was quoted as saying that he believes people are being too hard on Crosby for being late in shaking hands, and as a result missed opposing captain Nicklas Lindstrom.

“He got caught up,” Howe said, talking about the jubilation of winning. “He will mature. He’s a good kid.”

This 21 year-old became the youngest to captain a team to Stanley Cup victory last week, and has always been a great spokesman for the league. He has been involved with countless charities since turning professional and has a squeaky clean reputation.

My question remains, however, as to why Red Wings' player Kris Draper said Crosby snubbed Lindstrom, and not a handful of other Wings players including Chris Osgood and coach Mike Babcock, who were all still on the ice when Crosby went to shake hands?

Howe, who carved out a hall of fame career spent mostly with the Red Wings, believes that people have to take into account that Crosby is really very shy.

“He’s too damn shy,” Howe, who recently visited with Crosby, said as a reason for what might have made him late shaking hands. “During the five minutes I talked to him I basically said, ‘Don’t let anything bother you, just keep on the right road. You’re on the right road and you’re doing a hell of a lot of good jobs and good luck.’ He just stared at me, turned around and walked away.”

With regards to Crosby’s potential, Howe, who is now 81 years-old, has been very impressed. “I’m not going to say he knows everything, but he’s getting there fast,” Howe said. “A couple more years if he stays healthy, who knows?”

The one thing that bothers me about Draper ripping Crosby for being late in shaking hands, is why didn’t the Red Wing players who were waiting either skate over to Crosby or wait like the Penguins did last year to congratulate the Penguins captain?

I still remember the pictures on television from last spring showing the dejected Penguins waiting and waiting on the ice to shake hands. I believe that Mr. Hockey himself was one hundred percent accurate when saying that Crosby didn’t snub the Red Wings on purpose.

He finally captured a life long dream and he can be excused for feeling overwhelmed at that particular moment.

Viva Las Vegas...NHL Style

Las Vegas...Lights, camera, action! The new home of the NHL Awards did not disappoint. The star-studded event was all action. Even though the awards changed cities, the Ovechkin show continued just like last year in Toronto. Ovechkin was the talk of the town. He is bigger than life right now and as he paraded down the red carpet here at the Palms Hotel with two show girls, rumours were flying that he had just won $500 playing blackjack at one of the casinos before he took to the carpet. His overall image is one of fun and party, but when it comes to the game, it is all business.

Ovechkin captured the two most prestigious trophies for the second straight season on Thursday, winning the Lester B. Pearson Award as the players’ choice for the most outstanding player and the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP.

He was the show from start to finish and when asked about his winnings, “I have chips in my room in the safe,” said Ovechkin. “Losing is not for me.”

Though the Washington Capitals have yet to advance to the Stanley Cup finals with the young superstar, they are definitely poised to take on that challenge next year. The Capitals sniper also took home another Rocket Richard Trophy for leading the league with 56 goals.

“Next year, Stanley Cup will be ours,” were the words from his mouth. These are the words just after accepting the Hart from teammate Sergei Fedorov and Grammy Award-winning singer Michael Buble. Ovechkin was a runaway winner for the Hart, receiving 115 of 133 first-place votes to beat out Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin and Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk in an all-Russian group of finalists.

It was definitely a night for Russian hockey to gloat and for that matter international hockey. Award presenter Glenn Anderson thought he’d ended up in the wrong place – “down the road at the Russian awards.”

You can’t blame him for feeling a bit disoriented.

Even though there was lots of silverware for Ovechkin, this night one was more trying than others. He missed two games in October so that he could return to Russia to visit his ailing grandfather, Nikolay Kabayev, who died a few weeks later. That weighed heavy on his mind throughout the season and even as he celebrated in Vegas he acknowledged, “This year was especially hard,” said Ovechkin. “This award I give it to him and all my family.”

The evening was not without its mistakes as a few presenters stumbled over words and missed cues. Jeremy Roenick seemed a little nervous, even though that is out of character for the loud American star. The awards will be here for another two years and if last night was any indicator, they will only get hotter!!! Oops 39 degrees today in Las Vegas, can it get any hotter?

The night was not only owned by Ovechkin and his Russian comrades as the Boston Bruins placed three players to the podium. Zdeno Chara took the Norris Trophy for top defenceman, Tim Thomas took the Vezina Trophy for top goaltender and Claude Julien claimed the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year. The most emotional of them all was Thomas, who battled a long journey to the podium as he played some of his hockey in Finland and was never considered a legimate starting goal tender. “I never really allowed myself to believe that I might win,” said Thomas. “It seemed like such a far away dream when you look at the names on the Vezina Trophy. I’ve been more worried about getting my name on a roster.”

The NHL awards show was certainly star struck out side of hockey as Chaka Khan performed along with Robin Thicke, film producer Jerry Bruckheimer made an appearance on stage at the Pearl Concert Hall along with Kevin O’Donnelly from Entourage and several former NHL greats. Gerry Dee entertained the sold put crowd before the show but three special moments outweighed all the rest. Vladmir Konstantinov walked out on stage with a stroller and presented Ovechkin one of his three trophies with Hall of Famer Igor Larinov. Pat Burns presented the Jack Adams award and the audience gave him a very warm welcome as he battles cancer again. The highlight of the night was Jean Beliveau. Gary Bettman presented Montreal Canadiens’ great Mr. Beliveau with a lifetime achievement award, calling him the “emblem of elegance and class.” As Beliveau took the stage the audience responded with a long standing ovation.

In closing off a fantastic party in the Palms, it would not be complete without congratulating all of the other winners. The Pittsburgh Penguins were true Stanley Cup Champions (but one question was the absence of Sidney Crosby in the march to the podium. As the youngest captain to hoist the Cup, he didn’t need any more silverware.

Even though Pavel Datsyuk was a runner-up to Ovechkin for the Hart and Pearson, he managed to win both the Selke (top defensive forward) and Lady Byng (most gentlemanly) trophies for the second straight year. The Detroit Red Wings centre is arguably the best two-way player in the game right now.

Another big winner was Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Steve Mason, who took home the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year.

Among the other awards handed out:

-Nashville Predators forward Steve Sullivan took home the Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication.

-Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla won the Messier Leadership Award.

-Ethan Moreau of the Edmonton Oilers won the King Clancy for his charitable work.

-And, Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo was voted fan favourite.

12 Years for the Sedin Brothers

An optimist could point out that the Vancouver Canucks management and fans alike got some encouraging news when it was revealed on Thursday that their two top scorers, Daniel and Henrik Sedin, have expressed a strong desire to stay in Vancouver.

As opposed to many players who, as unrestricted free agents bolt to different teams, the Sedin twins who coincidently both led the team this year with 82 points have, according to a Swedish website, requested a 12 year pact worth $63 million which equates to a cap hit of just over $5 million. This proposal, which would expire when the Sedins would be in their early forties was not surprisingly turned down by the Canucks management.

Vancouver has often expressed their desire to re-sign the twins but for a shorter- term contract. “I don’t want to talk about it,” Daniel Sedin told CKNW in Vancouver on Thursday. “When this gets done, we will talk, but right now we’ll keep it between Mike (Canucks GM Gillis) and ourselves.”

Currently the two are still miles apart dollar wise as Vancouver hasn’t offered anything over $6 million for these two scorers who are easily worth $7 million in the open market. Even though these twins--who were selected in the first round by the Canucks in 199--want to stay in Vancouver, these two just might be skating with another team if the Canucks can’t re-sign them by July 1.

In nine full seasons Daniel Sedin has scored 462 career points and Henrik, who is more of a playmaker has scored 460. At 28 years old, both are just now entering their primes and if Vancouver can’t sign them, they will have many teams interested in their services.

Derian Hatcher Calls It a Career

In his prime, defenseman Derian Hatcher was known for delivering thunderous checks and being dominant in his own end.

During an impressive 17-year career this 37-year-old, originally selected in 1990 by the Minnesota North Stars, became the first American born player to captain his team to a Stanley Cup victory. That accomplishment occurred in 1999 when he registered seven points and a plus-four rating in helping the Dallas Stars to their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

For the 2003/04 campaign Hatcher moved onto the Detroit Red Wings where he signed a five-year deal as an unrestricted free agent. He ended up playing only one injury plagued season in the motor city as he suffered mightily from major knee (torn ACL) and shoulder injuries.

Those setbacks denied Red Wing fans the opportunity to see the full potential of Hatcher as he dressed for only 15 regular season games and scored only four assists but did have an impressive plus-four rating.

Unfortunately for the hulking Michigan native, injuries continued to take their toll and the Red Wings eventually placed him on waivers in July 2005.

After eventually having his contract bought out, the Philadelphia Flyers, who have always prided themselves on being a tough team, took a huge gamble and signed Hatcher to a four-year pact. After two healthy campaigns, knee injuries once again began haunting him and eventually it led to his retirement announcement, made on Monday.

During the 2007/08 season he endured a broken leg along with an assortment of other knee injuries that had him play just 44 games. This past season Hatcher had to sit out the entire season due to knee replacement surgery and decided that now is the right time to call it quits.

Upon retiring, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren hired Hatcher to be the new player development coach. “We are pleased to add Derian to our coaching staff in this very important capacity,” Holmgren said.

“Derian will spend valuable time with the young players throughout our organization, working on their on-ice game as well as helping these young players with the issues playing and/or preparing to play professional hockey.”

Hatcher accepted the position, replying, “It sounded like the perfect way to stay in the game and see if I like it.” In his career Hatcher scored 80 goals and 251 assists in 1,045 games.

Brian Burke Speaks His Mind on Heatley

Once again Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke has shown no hesitancy in speaking his mind.

Burke, who over the years has also been the general manager with the Hartford Whalers, Vancouver Canucks, and the Anaheim Ducks recently gave his blunt opinion regarding Ottawa Senators scoring forward Dany Heatley who made public last week his wishes to be traded.

“For a player to pop off and say he wants out or leak it (to the media), in my mind you are now no longer interested in your team,” said Burke, who in 2007 won a Stanley Cup with Anaheim. "If you’ve handicapped them, you’ve handcuffed your GM.”

Senators General Manager Bryan Murray admits that this trade request was a shock, especially since Heatley always had great things to say in the past about Ottawa, and just finished year one of a six year, $45 million contract extension.

Last week when the 28 year-old went public, he elaborated that he was not satisfied with his current role with the team and apparently doesn’t have the greatest relationship with coach Cory Clouston. During a radio interview with NHL Live on Wednesday Burke, who has vowed to be active with his Leafs’ roster this summer, stated that he didn’t like the manner in which the two-time 50 goal scorer went public with his trade request.

Even though Burke’s team needs scoring, he has vowed that Heatley, who only had 39 goals last year, wouldn’t be wearing a Leaf sweater next fall.

“He’s a good player but I have certain guidelines on how players ask for trades,” Burke said. “When you have players come ask you for a trade, I tell the players ‘don’t finish that sentence’, because once you ask, I’m going to move you. If a player wants out you're darn right I’m going to move you. My second rule is if I hear about this, you’re not going anywhere.”

Burke also criticized Heatley by saying that when you are a member of an organization then you owe them the courtesy of not going public so that the organization can in fact get the maximum amount of value for your services.

Bill Guerin is Not Stopping!

Hockey fans from around the world received some great news on the weekend when two-time Stanley Cup winner Bill Guerin made the announcement that he has absolutely no plans to retire.

This 16-year veteran showed this spring that age has yet to slow him down. He registered 15 points and posted an impressive +8 in Pittsburgh`s successful run for the Stanley Cup.

“Yeah, I’m going to keep playing,” Guerin, who is a 400 goal scorer, said. “It’d be a great way to go out, but maybe I can do it in a couple years. I feel like I’ve got a lot of gas left in the tank. I feel good physically and mentally and I still love to play, so I’m going to keep playing.”

This two-time Stanley Cup winner was dealt from the New York Islanders to the Penguins at the trade deadline, and right away showed that he was an impact player. In 17 regular season games with Pittsburgh, he scored an impressive five goals and registered seven assists.

This summer Guerin, who had a total of 48 points on the season, becomes an unrestricted free agent and should attract plenty of suitors from around the league.

Is Draper Blowing the Crosby Thing Out of Proportion?

I’ve always enjoyed watching Detroit Red Wings checking forward Kris Draper play, but I have to admit that I question the accusations he made on Friday night when he said Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby purposely snubbed Wings captain Nicklas Lindstrom.

Though I’ve never met Crosby, I’ve read that this 21 year-old is very gracious with his time and has trouble saying no, whether for granting media interviews or giving his spare time to local charities.

I’ve also heard through the years that he respects the history of hockey, which makes it hard to believe what Draper told the press.

On Friday night, Crosby became the youngest captain to ever lead his team to a Stanley Cup, and I believe that he can be excused for getting caught up in the moment after having his ultimate dream come true.

As a result of relishing the moment with the people he went to war with in the post-season, Crosby was a little late getting into line and shaking hands. Still, the camera caught him shaking hands with the handful of Red Wings left on the ice, including goalie Chris Osgood and forward Johan Franzen.

Crosby, who finished the playoffs with 31 points, estimated that he celebrated with everyone for about three to four minutes before joining the line to shake hands. Draper read it another way. He said that Crosby was purposely trying to snub Lindstrom.

“Nick was waiting and waiting and Crosby didn’t come over to shake his hand,” a frustrated Draper told the press. “That’s ridiculous, especially as their captain, and make sure you write that I said that.”

Crosby explained that when he finally joined the line only about 10 Red Wings were still on the ice.

“My intentions were to shake hands,” Crosby said when he heard about the accusations being made by Draper. “By no means was I trying to avoid shaking the other team’s hand. I think it’s important to do that.”

Crosby then very gently said that perhaps Lindstrom didn’t really wait that long to shake Crosby’s hand.

If anything, I believe that the Red Wing players who left the ice without going over to Crosby or waiting for him, looked bad. Lindstrom, who is a 17 year Red Wings veteran, should have realized that Crosby was overwhelmed with emotion after winning the Cup, and should be excused for not joining the handshaking lineup right away.

Lindstrom, who is an elder statesman of the league at 39, should have set the example by approaching Crosby and congratulating him with a handshake.

When Draper aired this dirty laundry to the press it came out as sounding very bitter and child like. I think the accusations were made out of pure frustration due to the Wings blowing a 2-0 and 3-2 series lead.

Robert Esche May Be A Flyer, Too

There is a good chance that a very familiar face might be donning a Philadelphia Flyers uniform once training camp open its doors in September.

Days after taking a gamble by signing the talented but troubled goaltender Ray Emery to a one year, $1.5 million dollar contract, the Flyers are said to be interested in bringing back another goalie, Robert Esche, for a second stint.

After sputtering in his fourth and final season (2007) in Philly by winning only five of 18 games, this eight year veteran decided to leave the NHL and try his hand at playing in Russia. This past season, the 31 year-old caught the attention of a few NHL teams when he posted a 21-14 record with an impressive 1.87 GAA and nine shutouts for the SKA St. Petersburg of the highly competitive Kontinental Hockey League.

Even though Philly is expressing interest, St. Petersburg coach Barry Smith explained that the only way Esche can get out of the final season in his contract is if St. Petersburg signs another starting goalie.

Philadelphia is among the handful of teams who are interested in the immense talent being displayed in Russia. There is a good chance that Philadelphia could work out a deal where they give St. Petersburg a young goalie from their system in exchange for Esche, who has a grand total of 78 NHL wins under his belt.

This Whitesboro, New York native, who represented his country at the 2004 World Cup and during the 2006 Winter Olympics, was originally a 1996 sixth round draft choice of the Phoenix Coyotes.

From Phoenix, Esche was traded to the Flyers in June 2002 where he enjoyed some individual success, including winning the William M. Jennings Award (lowest goals against) during the 2002-2003 season.

Chris Chelios: A Special Breed

While strongly counting down the hours until the puck drops for Friday’s Game Seven of the Stanley Cup finals, I can’t help but to wonder if hockey fans will ever get the privilege of seeing 47-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios play again.

This 25-year-veteran, who has three Stanley Cups on his resume, has over the years won countless battles on the ice, but has slowly been losing the fight against Father Time. This 1981 Montreal Canadiens draft choice has carved out a Hall-of-Fame career that includes three Norris Trophies, and has been picked to partake in 11 All-Star Games over a career with Montreal, Chicago Blackhawks, and the Detroit Red Wings.

A couple of seasons after coming to Detroit in March 1999, Red Wings management planned to cut down on the aging defenceman’s ice time. Even though he is one of the most competitive players in the league and can still be effective on the ice, Chelios has become the ultimate team player by putting the Wings first and his ego over ice time second. Even though he has only dressed for six playoff games this spring and will not be playing in Friday’s Game Seven, Cheli understands the situation.

“Obviously, I want to play, but I’m realistic too,” Chelios, who ranks third all-time among American players with 1,644 games played, said. “We have one of the best teams in the league and some young guys coming up and it’s bound to happen sooner or later. But I had an opportunity to play six games (in postseason) and help out a little bit, and there’s no other 47-year-old doing it in the league, so I’m going to hope and pray that things work out and I’ll be rooting just like the rest of our fans.”

That team-first attitude has made this 948-point scorer very popular with teammates and management alike. “He’d like to be part of it, but as long as the team wins and the other players are getting bigger roles and responsibilities, he’s okay with it,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. “I think he understands going into Game Seven that our best lineup, unfortunately, doesn’t include him. But he’s OK with that—he just wants the team to win.”

Fellow hard-hitting blue liner Nicklas Kronwall couldn’t say enough good things about Chelios and how he is a valuable leader in the room who helps out with his experience, sense of humor and his veteran savvy.

On a personal note, the one thing that really sticks out from last year’s Cup run was how Chelios was all smiles and excited to hoist the Stanley Cup even though he didn’t play in the Finals. He never complained last spring or this spring about being scratched for games.

In the Western Conference Finals against the Chicago Blackhawks this year, Cheli contributed mightily off the ice when he quickly killed a rumor started by fellow American Jeremy Roenick that Coach Mike Babcock didn’t like Americans, and that’s why he wasn’t playing Chelios.

To the credit of Chelios, he quickly put that rumor to rest before it took on a life of its own and interfered with Detroit’s ultimate focus of defending the Stanley Cup.

I’ve formed many great memories of number 24 over the years and I’m realistic in knowing that the last image of him as a professional hockey player might come on Friday night when dressed in civvies he joins his team in celebrating one more Stanley Cup.

Pittsburgh vs. Detroit: Pros and Cons of Game Seven

I am sure that most everyone will con-cede that I am pro-Penguins.

I will not pro-fess to know for sure what will be the con-clusion in the con-test between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings. There are a few die-hards that are con-vinced that the Penguins will not be able to con-trol the Red Wings; but if the Pens con-centrate on pro-ducing the pro-per con-ditions, (stay focused and out of the penalty box) they might just be able to con-tain the Red Wings.

I know the stats on the number of home-team victories in a seventh game. (18 for 18) As a one-time athlete myself, who has competed in many venues, I can’t buy that the crowd con-trols the outcome.

These are pro-fessionals, and they should be immune to the environment. Maybe Pittsburgh can end the jinx. Let’s pro- ceed and con-tinue to have faith in the determination and pro-ficiency that the likes of Sidney Crosby, Evengi Malkin, and especially, Rob Scuderi, can con-tain.

So much for the play on words. I would dearly like to see Pittsburgh take home THE STANLEY CUP on Friday night.

Wow that was tough,

Momma Gouche.

Bryan Murray Reluctant to Let Heatley Go

Some shocking news recently came out of the nations capital. This time, it was sports-related.

28 year-old Dany Heatley, who still has five years remaining on a lucrative six year, $45 million contract, wants out of Ottawa.

Ottawa Senators General Manager Bryan Murray says he expects his star forward Dany Heatley to honor his long-term contract. Upon being reached for comment Murray didn’t sound like he was in any hurry to accommodate this seven year veteran, who has spent the past four seasons in Ottawa.

“We signed (Heatley) to a longterm deal and we expect him to honour it,” Murray, who said. “At this point in time, he’s a Senator.”

Apparently the two time 50 goal scorer became disenchanted right after Cory Clouston took over the coaching reins mid-season and immediately reduced Heatley’s ice time. Making matters worse, the rookie coach moved Heatley from the first to the second power play unit.

It was not only a disappointing season for the Senators, but for Heatley as well. He had a sub par 72 points, and agreed during post-season meetings with Clouston to wait and contemplate whether he truly wanted to be traded.

Even though it could be a huge challenge for a team to take on his contract, which is for the next five years at $7.5 million per year, Murray should still find lots of teams lining up at a chance to acquire this talented veteran.

“We have been having discussions with Bryan Murray concerning Dany,” Heatley’s agent J.P. Barry said. “I’d like to continue these discussions in private before determining what’s best for Dany.”

These reports also mention that Heatley would like to go to a Western Conference team.

Only time will tell if Murray trades Heatley or keeps the disgruntled forward as a Senator.

Bill Guerin: The Pens Will Be Contenders for Years

With elimination staring them in the face, the Pittsburgh Penguins don’t have too look far in realizing that this ultimate opportunity of winning the Stanley Cup isn’t something that they should take for granted.

Even though the young and talented Penguins have made it to consecutive finals against the reigning champion Detroit Red Wings, Bill Guerin serves as the perfect example that this opportunity won’t come every single season.

Guerin, who was picked up by the Penguins at the March trade deadline, is a grizzled 38 year-old veteran who won the Stanley Cup as a 25 year-old youngster back in 1995 with an emerging New Jersey Devils team.

At that time, this 17-year veteran believed he would win a few more, but has never made it back to the big show until this season. While the Devils won a few more Stanley Cups over the years, Guerin moved around to the Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, San Jose Sharks, New York Islanders, and presently, the Penguins.

“You never know what the future holds for opportunities and chances to win the Cup,” Guerin, whose team is trailing 3-2 in the finals, said. “But, yeah, I know where I’m at in my career. I know they’re going to have to kick me out of this league because I want to keep playing as long as I can. But the opportunity is now.”

Reflecting on the nucleus of the Penguins, Guerin believes that with players such as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, the Pens will be knocking on the door for years to come.

“They’re lucky that they’re good,” Guerin, who has 15 playoff points this spring, said. “I think this team’s going to be sniffing around for championships for a long time because of the way they’ve drafted the last some-odd years. But you can’t take opportunities for granted.”

Ray Emery To Sign with Philly?

It looks as though former Ottawa Senators bad boy Ray Emery will be granted a second chance in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers.

After a solid OHL career with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, which included winning goalie of the year honors in 2002, Emery was projected to be the Senators' starting goalie for years to come.

But after enjoying a 33-win season and posting a tidy 2.26 GAA in taking his Senators to the Stanley Cup finals in 2007, things drastically fell apart for the 26-year-old.

Emery, who as a free agent re-signed with the Senators that summer, came into camp hampered by a nagging wrist injury. During the first month of the 2008 season, Emery went down to the minors for a rehab stint, and upon returning to Ottawa was not thrilled about losing his starting job to fellow veteran goalie Martin Gerber.

Instead of accepting the situation, Emery, who was Ottawa’s fourth round pick in 2001, turned into a disruption. Besides being late to numerous team practices and having arguments with his coach, Emery got into some fights with teammates Brian McGrattan and Chris Neil during practices.

After Ottawa suffered a first round playoff exit to the Pittsburgh Penguins that spring, many pointed the finger at Emery even though it was Gerber who was in net during that first round. Critics pointed to the fact that with Emery, who posted a 12-13-4 record with a 3.13 GAA upon his return to Ottawa, the team started its downward spiral after getting off to a great start.

Not surprisingly, Emery, the once solid prospect, was eventually put on waivers by Senators general manager Bryan Murray, who was fed up with Emery and referred to him as being a negative presence.

With all other 29 teams not wanting to take a gamble on Emery, he spent this past season in the newly formed Kontinental Hockey League. On July 8 he signed with Atlant Mytischy where he perked the interest of the Philadelphia Flyers after posting a 22-8 record and a 2.12 GAA.

“We have internal discussions about many players and their potential availability, including Ray Emery,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said. “I have spoken to his agent a few times about Ray as well. Any further speculation about this would be very premature.”

On July 1 both Philadelphia goalies Martin Biron and backup Antero Niittymaki will be free agents and Holmgren has voiced his desire to add more consistency to that position. His agent, J.P. Barry, admitted to have held talks with the Flyers and is optimistic with how things have been progressing.

Last summer Emery signed a two-year deal with the Kontinental League, which lets him get out of that second year if an NHL team shows interest in him.

If Detroit Red Wings Win, Marian Hossa Will be Booed

Veteran forward Kirk Maltby joked that if his Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh then he’ll make absolute sure not to stand anywhere near teammate Marian Hossa.

To say that Hossa’s decision to turn down a lucrative five-year contract extension (worth 35 million) with Pittsburgh in favor of signing with the defending Stanley Cup Detroit Red Wings didn’t go over well with Penguins fans is a gross understatement.

It was only a year ago that this 11- year veteran was cheered wildly after becoming a Penguin at the March trade deadline. Hossa who scored 26 playoff points last spring in helping the Pens go to the Stanley Cup finals caught many in Pittsburgh off guard when he gave his reasons for signing with the Red Wings who coincidently were the team that beat Pittsburgh last spring.

“I made a decision and I hope it’s the right one,” Hossa who last summer signed a one- year contract worth $7.45 million said.

At that time, the 30 year-old took quite a bit of criticism when he admitted that he believed Detroit had a slightly better chance at winning the Stanley Cup and that’s why he signed.

Last week Hossa reiterated what he said last summer and added that he wanted to play with teammates who have won in the past and learn from them. Right away, this six foot one 210 pounder made a positive impression on his teammates who regard him as a key reason to the Wings success this season.

“He’s a great player and he wants to win as much as anyone,” Maltby said. ‘Whether it’s one Cup or if you’re going for your fifth, you’re going to play hard. That’s what he’s done for us up to now.” Detroit Coach Mike Babcock believes that Hossa who has struggled in the finals with only three assists might be pressing due to the mounted pressure of playing his former team and being booed in Pittsburgh every time he touches the puck.

“I think he’s really pleased with his decision,” (coming to Detroit) Babcock said. “In some ways, it’s probably as difficult a situation as it could have been for him. There are a lot of other teams we could be playing and it would have been easier and we wouldn’t be talking about this stuff.”

Hossa will once again be a free agent on July 1. That right now isn’t on the Red Wings mind as they are only one win away from winning their 12th Cup in franchise history and fifth since 1997.

“You want to go in and have a good, solid road game,” Maltby said. “They’re going to come out with their best effort and it’s a matter of how we answer the bell.”

Stanley Cup Finals: Will There Be a Game Seven?

Can you believe that there are many fans that wait with interpretation for tomorrow’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings? This hope that the Penguins will prevail, and force a seventh game, is as far reaching as Germany. Our visiting German friends are adamant in their support.

I have only one acquaintance who assures me that I am always wrong, when we disagree on a decision. I can’t remember the last time I have been wrong (and not admitted it)? My learned friend is positive that Detroit is going to take the Cup and will be most fervent in his mockery of me, if he is right. Thank goodness I only see him once a week.

However, there is a difference in our attitude. I never—yes, I said never—make a positive statement unless I can prove I am right. I am not sure if I so much want Pittsburgh to win, as I would like to see him eat crow, if he loses. Well, tonight is do or die. Stay calm, don’t be intimidated, and stay out of the penalty box!

Detroit Demolishes Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Penguins out shot the Detroit Red Wings in the first period of game five on Saturday night, but that was no indication of how things were going to unfold.

Dan Cleary opened the scoring at 13:32 of the first period, with assists from Brian Rafalski and Pavel Datsyuk. After missing seven games over 17 days, Datysyuk didn’t seem to miss a beat.

Evengi Malkin played his usual style, but nothing was effective. The roof began to fall in for the Penguins at 1:44 of the second when Valtteri Filppula gave Detroit a 2-0 lead. Nikolas Kronwall scored at 6:11, followed by a power play goal by Brian Rafalski at 8:26. Henrik Zetterberg got the final goal of the game at 15:40.

Marc-Andre Fleury was replaced by Mathieu Garon after the fifth goal, but the dye was already cast. It was virtually too much of a deficit to overcome.

It was sad to see Fleury leave so beaten, as he had done a wonderful job up to this point, especilly for a player who is so young.

It is tough to say whether frustration lead to penalties or penalties lead to frustration, but Detroit out-shot, out-played, and out-scored Pittsburgh. It’s as simple as that.

I truly felt that Pittsburgh was in a very good position going into this game, but now the experience once again has proven too much.

There have been several momentum swings in this series and now this one may be too much for the Pens to overcome.

Momma Gouche
