Los Angeles Dodgers Prepare for Upcoming Winter Meetings

Prior to the winter meetings next week in the Indianapolis Convention Center, the Los Angeles Dodgers need to decide what moves the team needs to make that will lead towards their next winning season.

Ned Colletti continues business as usual and makes it a priority to put the Dodgers back in the playoffs for the 2010 season.

The Dodgers have 17 free agents, including Manny Ramirez, who recently exercised the club option. Other free agents who played a major role in the 2009 season include Orlando Hudson and Ronnie Belliard, both of whom filled in second base very well this past season.

Brad Ausmus and Mark Loretta also added the punch to a great bench that is now emptied out. That leaves only outfielder Juan Pierre, who really is the fourth outfielder on the Dodgers and not a true bench player.

Then there are several pitchers the Dodgers need to decide whether to re-sign, or select others to fill in the holes before the new season: Vincent Padilla, Randy Wolf, Jeff Weaver, and John Garland all are free-agent pitchers.

The Dodgers do still have one of the best farm systems in the major leagues. Christopher Withrow, who was the 2007 No. 1 pick, is a prospect of the Dodgers and asserted himself in his late-season call-up to Double A, posting a (2-2)-3.95-.240-26-12. He is now at a position to potentially help the Dodgers' rotation sometime next season.

Another Dodgers' prospect pitcher they may look at is Aaron Miller, a first-round pick last June who didn't take long to stamp his name as a potential pro ace.

The Baylor product dominated low Class A through 10 starts and could move very quickly to the majors—perhaps even by the end of 2010.

The pitching staff still needs to find a true ace; that was once thought to be Chad Billingsley, though he has not lived up to expectations.

Rumors are spreading on trading him to the Blue Jays for Roy Halladay. But now it’s believed to be a long shot, especially with what’s occurring on the ownership table for the Dodgers.

Therefore, the Dodgers' No. 1 priority is simply finding their ace this offseason and possible re-signing their veteran pitchers, like Wolf and Padilla. As for now, their starting rotation is Clayton Kershaw, Hiroki Kuroda, and Billingsley.

Second is finding an infielder to fill in the empty space at second base. With Hudson and Belliard each being free agents this offseason, second base is vacant.

Blake Dewitt may be able to take on that role, for now he continues to play the role of Casey Blake's back-up at third.

In this case, Colletti is rumored to be looking at several veteran players. Marco Scutaro could fill the hole the Dodgers have at second.

According to the Boston Globe, Scutaro is interested in playing for the Red Sox or the Dodgers. If the 34-year-old veteran played for the Sox, he would move to shortstop. Other teams are also reporting interest.

Other infield free agents the Dodgers may want to take a look at include Brewers' infielder Felipe Lopez, who had a batting average last season of .310 and is only 29 years old. At this time, only the Orioles have looked into signing him.

Signing role players off the bench is also going to play a major role in the offseason for the Dodgers, as they may lose backup catcher Brad Ausmus and backup infielder Mark Loretta, among others.

As General Manager Ned Colletti and Manager Joe Torre prepare for the upcoming winter meetings, they both understand the importance of filling the holes to plan for an even better season than the last two, even though the ownership may be in shambles.

Los Angeles Dodgers Aquire Jim Thome and Jon Garland

In two separate deals, the National League-leading Los Angeles Dodgers acquired veteran slugger Jim Thome and pitcher Jon Garland, according to the team on Monday just minutes prior to the deadline for postseason eligibility.

Thome, of the Chicago White Sox, cleared waivers and will be eligible to play for Los Angeles in the postseason, according to the L.A. Times. Thome was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor league infielder Justin Fuller and cash. Fuller, 26, is currently hitting .254 in the minors.

Thome is hitting .249/.372/.493 this season for the White Sox for an OPS of .864, more than 100 points better than Dodgers first baseman James Loney's .738. Thome, 39, has 564 career home runs but hasn't played first base since 2007. He'll likely be relegated to pinch-hitting duties with a start here and there.

Thome will bring the team extra power from the left side of the plate. The five-time All-Star has 23 home runs and 74 RBI this season and is 12th on the all-time home run list, with 564.

Thome will be a great acquisition for the Dodgers to deliver some punch off the bench they need in the later innings.

Additionally, Garland, a right-handed pitcher, was traded to Los Angeles Monday for a player to be named later. He cleared waivers during the game with the Dodgers, leaving the Diamondbacks dugout to switch sides just after 9 p.m.

Garland, originally from Southern California, returns home and will most likely make his first start against his former team this Thursday.

Garland is currently 8-11 with a 4.29 ERA, but he could provide the Dodgers with a reliable fifth starter. Los Angeles' starting pitching has been inconsistent this year, and the rotation was further weakened with the loss of Hiroki Kuroda, who was struck in the head by a line drive on Aug. 15.

Manny Who?: With Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp, the Dodgers Have Power Aplenty

The Dodgers are in the midst of a series with the Cincinnati Reds after a long week battling the Colorado Rockies. Winning the second game in the series against the Reds, the Dodgers began to create more distance between their rival division foes this weekend, and the momentum is not only coming from the power of Manny Ramirez.

The majority of the power this season has actually been coming from the other Dodgers outfielders—Andre Either and Matt Kemp.

These two young stars are beginning to make a name for themselves with or without Manny in the lineup; they have each made tremendous contributions to the Dodgers' production this season.

The Dodgers acquired Ethier from the Oakland A's in 2005, for Milton Bradley. Ethier beat out Juan Pierre to become the Dodgers' starting left fielder for the start of the 2008 season.

When the Dodgers acquired Ramirez from the Red Sox later that season, Ethier moved to his more natural position of right field, with Kemp playing center field. In 2008, Ethier played in 141 games, had 525 at-bats, scored 90 runs, had 160 hits, and hit .305 with 20 homers and 77 RBI. His OBP was .375.

This season, he is posting even better statistics all around by adding the punch to the lineup when Manny and others are not able to produce. His batting average is .286 with 27 home runs and 83 RBI, and currently his OBP is .371

The other power hitter is the young Kemp, who made his major league debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 28, 2006; just days later, he slugged his first major league homer—June 1, in his second Dodger Stadium at-bat, off the Philadelphia Phillies' Gavin Floyd.

He then homered in each of the next two games against the Phillies and homered twice on June 11 off Colorado Rockies starter Aaron Cook. He became the first Dodger and fifth major leaguer to hit four homers in his first 10 days with the team. Quite the first impression.

Last season, after a knee injury to Andruw Jones, Kemp became the Dodgers' regular center fielder. During the course of the season, Kemp managed to cut down his high strikeout rate and develop his speed. Kemp finished the year second on the Dodgers in stolen bases, with 35.

Currently, Kemp is posting career-high numbers and playing incredible defense out in center field. This season he is batting .315 with 20 home runs and 83 RBI, not to an OBP of .373.

As these two present young stars continue to improve and become true power hitters of their own, the Dodgers are developing—if not already boasting—a very powerful lineup, providing the team, players, and fans something exciting to watch during the pennant race and hopefully many years to come.

Los Angeles Dodgers Lineup Needs To Step Up

In the past three weeks, the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers haven't been playing so hot. With a record of 8-13 in the last 21 days, the Dodgers have not only suffered from the lack of a true fifth starter in the rotation or bullpen support, but also, and perhaps more significantly, the lack of productive run support with runners in scoring position.

In Friday's 4-1 loss to the Diamondbacks in the opener of this series, Matt Kemp went 2-for-3 with a home run and Manny Ramirez recorded three hits for the Dodgers, who got a shaky performance from starter Clayton Kershaw.

An example of the lack of run-support: In Arizona, James Loney, for the first time in his career, failed to pick up a hit in Arizona, breaking a streak of 19 games. In 20 career games at Chase Field, Loney is hitting .420/.453/.630.

Inside Chavez Ravine, Dodgers fans watched the Dodger loss against the Diamondbacks on DodgerVision. Enjoying themselves after the game Friday night, the fans had the opportunity to play catch on the field and watch "Field of Dreams" before sleeping in their sleeping bags under the stars and waking up to a warm breakfast.

Entering tonight's game, the Dodgers now have dropped two straight and six of their last nine games. Will Manny and the Dodgers have the run support they desperately need to win the NL west and move forward into the playoffs?

What has to happen is Dodger players like Russell Martin, Casey Blake, James Loney, and Orlando Hundson need to start contributing again and set up runners in scoring position. They need to make the lineup dangerous again as it was prior to the All-Star break. And not leave the hitting only up to Manny and Kemp to put the Dodgers in front.

Tonight, Joe Torre will send Hiroki Kuroda to the mound and he has won two straight starts. Kuroda, whose last six trips to the hill have resulted in wins for LA, is coming off an Aug. 10 victory over San Francisco in which he yielded one run in 6.1 innings of a 4-2 triumph.

Kuroda is 5-5 with a 4.21 earned run average in 15 games (14 starts) this season and will try for a measure of revenge against Arizona. In a 3-2 loss to the D-Backs on June 1, the righty permitted a pair of runs in five innings. He is 1-3 with a 4.32 ERA in five career appearances against Arizona.

According to the LA Times, Russell Martin said: "Don’t count us out even though our numbers have declined in recent weeks." Chad Billingsley will start in the rotation against the Cardinals next week at home.

Other players said they're ready to contribute to getting back on track, like Will Ohman, who should come off the disabled list and be ready to return sometime in early September.

On a good note, the Dodgers' fielding is spectacular. They have gone six games and 59.1 innings without an error.

Los Angeles Dodgers On the Lookout for a Fifth Starter

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in desperate need of the fifth starter added to their rotation. This became a more frantic need when Chad Billingsley turned up questionable for his next start Wednesday in San Francisco, and with the Dodgers unsettled on a permanent fifth starter, manager Joe Torre said Sunday the team continues to look outside the organization for help.

They are probably considering the addition of future Hall of Famer John Smoltz, who was a disappointment in Boston this season in posting a career high ERA of 8.32 ERA with only two wins.

Another possibility is Vicente Padilla, who was designated for assignment on Wednesday by the Rangers. He currently has better numbers than Smoltz this season, with an 8-6 record and a 4.92 ERA.

The fact that he either came to meetings late or didn't show up to them must have rankled Rangers coaches and front-office folks enough to go ahead and send him packing. Padilla's habit of throwing at players on the other team also reportedly didn't sit well with teammates who then got thrown at.

The Dodgers need a true fifth starter as they move close to the pennant race. Currently that role is being filled by multiple mediocre pitchers, including Jeff Weaver, Jason Schimdt, and Eric Stults. None of them have filled that role with much success.

According to sources, the Dodgers may not be the only team interested in Smoltz. The Rangers may want to fill in the new Padilla hole on the roster, and Brewers as well are showing interest in both players. Don’t be fooled by Smoltz's statistics this year for Boston; he is still capable of pitching in his usual All-Star form.

Roy Halladay: Possibly The Next Great Pitcher In Dodger Blue

Are the Dodgers willing to make a trade to compete with the Phillies for the National League title this year?

The Phillies yesterday traded for left-hander Cliff Lee only added to the pressure on the Dodgers to bolster their pitching staff. Blue Jays right-hander Roy Halladay remains a possibility, but only if the Dodgers are willing to part with the necessary prospects.

Roy continues to make an impact in the AL East for the Blue Jays and has been the talk of MLB as the trade deadline ends tomorrow. With 20 games pitched, Halladay has a record 11-4 with ERA of 2.68

The Blue Jays would not require the Dodgers to include right-hander Chad Billingsley or lefty Clayton Kershaw in a deal for Halladay, according to major-league sources. But Dodgers GM Ned Colletti has said publicly that the Jays want five or six of his team's best young players.

The Jays, in need of a shortstop, surely would have interest in Ivan DeJesus Jr., who has been out the entire season with a broken right leg, or Devaris Gordon, a younger shortstop who is the son of reliever Tom Gordon. Among the other Dodgers prospects who could interest the Jays: Outfielder Andrew Lambo, right-hander Josh Lindblom, third baseman Josh Bell and right-hander Chris Withrow. Any of these selections will not effect the current forty-man roster.

Though the Rangers are also hoping to make a move on Halladay and have not given up yet. The Rangers' chances of getting Halladay increased Wednesday.

If Halladay seems to be an unrealistic trade the Dodgers need help in the bullpen as well and George Sherrill, from the Orioles. As a closure for Baltimore Sherrill currently has 20 saves and possesses a 2.40 ERA.

The Dodgers have maintained interest in Sherrill, and a number of their prospects appeal to the Orioles.

The Dodgers need to fill the holes in pitching staff through their starting rotation and/or a great relief pitcher.

Even their rival Giants yesterday picked up Freddy Sanchez from the Pirates yesterday

Ned Colletti, is a man of twist and surprises I am sure he has something up his sleeve today or tomorrow prior to the deadline.

Los Angeles Dodgers News: Andre Eithier Is Rewarded By The MLB

You know the season is great for the Los Angeles Dodgers when the team's future All Stars are already making an impact to the lineup. This week, Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier led the majors in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage last week. He was named National League Player of the Week, which was presented by Bank of America, for the period ending July 26th.

Having Manny Ramirez back in the lineup makes a big difference for Eithier in right field. The 27-year-old also leads the majors with a 1.045 slugging percentage and a .630 on-base percentage. He also ranks second in the N.L. with eight runs and five doubles, all in the past six games last week.

Ethier, one of 12 players in the major league to have at least 20 home runs and 20 doubles, leads the first-place Dodgers in home runs (20) and RBIs (62). The lefty-hitting slugger, who won the award for the second time this season and third time in his four-year career, is riding a seven-game hitting streak and batting .577 (15-for-26).

As Ethier enters the game today with a seven-game hitting streak, he is just three games shy of surpassing his season-high.

Eithier was a second-round pick in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft from Arizona State University by the Oakland A’s. He joined the Dodgers after being traded for Milton Bradley and Antonio Perez.

In his fourth season with the Dodgers, Eithier has a .297 career batting average and a career slugging percentage of .850.

Los Angeles (62-36) went 4-2 last week, and despite dropping two of three to the Marlins, still leads the NL West by eight games.

The Dodgers currently lead the NL in batting average and are third in runs scored. And a lot of that has to do with new fearsome duo of Ramirez and Ethier.

Cooperstown Feels a Lil' Blue Without L.A. Dodger Legend Steve Garvey

Legendary Los Angles Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey deserves a look by the Hall of Fame voters of the veterans committee. He became eligible in 1993 to receive votes to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) but never received the 75 percent threshold needed to be inducted in the Hall.

Garvey missed his final chance in 2007, when Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn were both inducted. In 2007, Garvey only received 21 percent of the votes needed.

Garvey became known as the Iron Man of the National League while with the Dodgers. He had Popeye-size forearms and his jersey is still worn and sold today in Dodger stadium.

Garvey played his entire career in the National League West for two teams: the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1969 to 1982 and the San Diego Padres 1983-1987. He batted right and threw right. In a 19-year career, Garvey was a .294 hitter with 272 home runs and 1,308 RBI in 2,332 games played.

When playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers under manager Tommy Lasorda, in the break of his career, he joined one of the greatest Dodger infields of all time, with third baseman Ron Cey, shortstop Bill Russell, and second baseman Davey Lopes. In fact, it is the longest-enduring infield in baseball history.

These four infielders stayed together as the Dodgers' starters for eight-and-a-half years.

Garvey is one of only two players to have started an All-Star Game as a write-in vote, doing so in 1974. Garvey set a National League record with 1,207 consecutive played, from Sept. 3, 1975, to July 29, 1983. The streak ended when he broke his thumb in a collision at home plate against the Atlanta Braves.

In the 1978 National League Championship Series, Garvey hit four home runs and added a double for five extra base hits, both marks tying Bob Robertson's 1971 NLCS record.

In 1981, at a point in his career when it looked like he would one day rank among the game's all-time greats, Lawrence Ritter and Donald Honig included him in their book The 100 Greatest Baseball Players of All Time.

However, the Dodgers have still not retired his No. 6 jersey. Even though he presently is active with the community in Los Angeles in keeping the exciting true-blue tradition with Dodger club.

For the San Diego Padres, he continued his greatness in the NL West. On his first trip to Los Angeles as a Padre, he took out a full-page newspaper ad in the Los Angeles Times thanking fans for their past support.

On Oct. 6, 1984, during Game Four of the National League Championship Series, Garvey hit a two-run walk-off home run off of Lee Smith in the ninth inning to give the Padres a 7-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The next day, the Padres won the National League pennant for the first time in franchise history. Garvey wound up being named the 1984 NLCS' Most Valuable Player.

Garvey's jersey No. 6, worn when he was both a Padre and Dodger, is retired by the Padres. His number was displayed at the site of his 1984 NLCS home run in right field at Qualcomm Stadium.

Garvey's accomplishments only tell a little of the story to how great of a player he truly was. Though this is simply why I would vote him in:

In 1974, Garvey was named the National League Most Valuable Player.

National League's Iron Man—Holds NL consecutive games played record at 1,207 straight games.

Garvey is a 10-time All Star, including eight straight (1974-1981).

During his career he hit for a batting average of .300 seven times and finished with a .294 career average with 2,599 hits.

Garvey led the NL in hits twice, collected 200 hits or more six times in seven seasons.

In 1974, became the only player ever elected as an All-Star Game starter as a write-in candidate. Garvey earned the MVP Award in that game and later won another MVP in the 1978 mid-summer classic.

Garvey won four straight Gold Glove awards (1974-1977) and set a ML record with his career .996 fielding percentage at first base.

Garvey was the first player in MLB history to record an errorless season at first base (1984) and set an MLB record for first baseman by playing 193 straight games without committing an error—a mark that stood until April of 2008, when Boston's Kevin Youkilis surpassed it with 194 after having an errorless season at first in 2007.

Garvey drove in 100 runs five times, including four straight years (1977-1980).

He was also one of the greatest clutch postseason players ever. Hit .300 or better in eight of his 11 postseason series. Hit .389 with four homers and seven RBI in the four-game 1978 NLCS win. Hit 10 home runs in the NLCS (a record at the time) and hit .338 with 11 homers, 31 RBI and 32 runs scored in 55 postseason contests. Played best when it mattered most.

Garvey hit one of baseball's most memorable home runs, the famous game-winning home run in Game Four of the 1984 NLCS. The blast itself, combined with the huge team momentum and morale shifts that it caused, lifted the Padres into the deciding fifth game and ultimately to the team's first ever NL Pennant and World Series appearance. Garvey drove in five runs in all.

He won 1978 and 1984 NLCS MVP Awards. Team MVP of the 1974 NLCS (award not official until 1977).

Garvey led or tied for the team lead in batting average and total hits (among team's regulars) in an amazing eight out of 11 postseason series. He led NL in games played six times (1977-78, 1980-82, 1985).

I ask the media and others—stop comparing him to other first baseman who played in the '70s and '80s who are in the Hall of Fame. Garvey was a fantastic player himself. Look at him for the player and teammate he was on the field—a true baseball player.

He is without a doubt one of the all-time great first baseman and complete players of his time, and he deserves the undivided attention by the veteran committee in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

MLB-Leading Los Angeles Dodgers Fall Again to the Astros Friday Night

The National League-leading Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Houston Astros again on Friday, 8-1, as ace Chad Billingsley was knocked around and failed to get out of the second inning for the first time all season.

Where were the Dodgers bats against Roy Oswalt and the Astros? Did they forget they are the home team?

Or did they just decide to take off of work? They allowed Ivan Rodriguez to go 4-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, while Oswalt tossed his 18th career complete game to lead the Astros.

Oswalt (6-4) gave up one run on four hits with five strikeouts and has now won his last three decisions. The righty also moved to 6-0 against the NL West on the year.

"I felt good coming out of the bullpen," Oswalt told the AP. "I had good mechanics; I felt like the ball was coming out of my hand well. The biggest thing was to keep them off-balance and not walk guys."

Hunter Pence and Geoff Blum both finished with a pair of RBI for the Astros, who have won three in a row. Miguel Tejada had a solo homer to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Michael Bourn had two hits and an RBI in the triumph. Carlos Lee, who finished 1-for-4 and scored a run, left late in the game with a bruised knee.

Orlando Hudson tripled and scored for the Dodgers, who have dropped the first two tests of this four-game set and three of four overall. Russell Martin drove in the lone run in the setback.

Billingsley (9-5) took the loss after lasting just 1.2 innings and giving up six runs on nine hits.

"Right now it doesn't look like Chad is sure of himself," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "We don't think anything is wrong with him. This is one we have to turn the page on; right now we're not swinging the bats.

"When you give Oswalt the lead, he knows what to do with it."

The Astros took the lead in the first inning thanks to a two-out rally. Miguel Tejada started it off with a homer to center field. Carlos Lee and Geoff Blum followed with singles before Hunter Pence ripped a two-run double.

Rodriguez then stroked an RBI single to left, which made it 4-0. Blum added a two-run double in the second inning, which made it 6-0 and brought in Jeff Weaver from the bullpen. Rodriguez led the third off with a homer to center, which made it a seven-run affair, but Hudson opened the home portion of the inning with a triple and scored on a groundout. Bourn tacked on an RBI double in the fifth to balloon Houston's advantage to seven runs.

To protect the Dodgers from losing the series, they need to bring the bats. The big hitters like Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp, and Andre Either need to start driving in runs as they did prior to the All-Star break. Clayton Kershaw starts tonight against Mike Hampton and the Astros. The Dodgers are hoping this will be the start of a new home winning streak.

Dodgers-Rockies: After a Win in Game 50, Los Angeles Readies for Manny's Return

A nice sunny day game and a victory—that’s all the Dodgers needed before the long road trip before the All-Star Break. It also made the Dodgers the first team to 50 wins this season, with the second place Giants trailing by 6.5 games in the National League west division.

Wednesday's victory started with Rafael Furcal's pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning, which led to the Dodgers beating the Colorado Rockies, 1-0, in the final game of Manny Ramirez's 50-game drug suspension.

The Dodgers had a strong record during Ramirez's absence, as they went were 29-21. Manny, a 12-time All-Star, needs three home runs to tie Mickey Mantle for 15th place on the career list at 536. Ramirez is expected to return to the lineup Friday night for the start of a three-game series at San Diego.

Catcher Brad Ausmus led off the eighth with a single against Rockies starter Jason Hammel (5-4) and advanced on second baseman Juan Castro's sacrifice. Russell Martin ran for Ausmus and scored when Furcal stroked a single to right field on the right-hander's 100th pitch while batting for reliever Ramon Troncoso (2-0) to edge out the Rockies and win the series, 2-1.

Why the Los Angeles Dodgers Need To Hold On to Juan Pierre

Juan Pierre will head back to the bench when Manny Ramirez returns from his 50-game suspension, confirmed Joe Torre.

Prior to this season started, the Dodgers gave Pierre and his agent permission to talk to other teams in hopes of working out a trade, since Ramirez's re-signing with the Dodgers pushed Pierre to the backup role in left field.

Yesterday Torre said, "Yeah, I really didn't consider any other option," adding that Pierre will play about twice a week while giving one of the three regular outfielders a rest.

Pierre is currently batting .352 in 165 at-bats with an .867 OPS. In Manny’s absence, he was lead off batter for the majority of the games.

Pierre recently tied former Dodger Steve Sax on the top 50 career MLB stolen base leaders list with 444 on June 12, 2009, against the Texas Rangers in Arlington. The next day, June 13, he pushed Sax out of the top 50 with his 445th steal, again versus the Rangers in Arlington, TX.

Though a speedster on the bases, Pierre was not on the All-Star ballot this year. Many Dodgers fans believe he deserves to be the write in vote and back up in the outfield during the game.

At the same time, trade rumors have floated in from different locations. The Dodgers have included Seattle's Jarrod Washburn on their list of trade targets, and Washburn delivered his fifth quality start in six outings for the Mariners on Thursday. The Mariners could use help in left field, but the Internet-fueled rumor of Washburn for Juan Pierre makes little sense.

The Mariners need Washburn if they're still in contention, and they don't need Pierre if they're not. For now, they're very much in the pennant race, having won seven of their last nine games to stay within reach of Texas and the Angels in the AL West. Pierre for Washburn unlikely to happen at this point.

In my interpretation Pierre will continue to play a big role in the Dodgers road to the World Series this season. Whether its coming off the bench or starting in the outfield to give Manny, Andre Either, and Matt Kemp rest. He is one of the main ingredients to the Dodgers winning season, and Pierre will continue his successful season even when Manny returns on the third.

Why Los Angeles Dodgers Fans Couldn't Care Less About the "Freeway Series"

A true Dodgers fan understands the meaning of the upcoming Interleague series against the team's crosstown American League rival. These Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim—so called for marketing reasons—are not true rivals in our book.

The Dodgers and Angels cannot go back in history and recall any turbulent battles between the two teams. Each organization does have its history of great players, but they never met in a meaningful game—let alone the World Series.

Yes, these games count because it's the regular season, but they mean nothing more to average Dodgers fan than would any other game on the schedule.

Plus, I don’t see any “Beat L.A.” signs or chants at Angel Stadium. I do when we play our true rival, the Giants, up in San Francisco.

Fans aren't obligated to make it a rivalry because their home stadium is only 30 minutes away or because a former Dodger catcher is now is the manager of the Angels.

As Dodgers fans, we would rather not see the Angels twice on the schedule every year. It’s not like the Mets and Yankees games, where we all get excited for a Subway Series. Even the A’s and the Giants had the Battle of the Bay series.

I would prefer to see us play the Yankees or the Red Sox more often then the Angels. A poll was actually done on KCAL 9, the Dodgers station in L.A., during a Texas Rangers game. When asked who they would like to see the Dodgers face more during Interleague Play, more fans chose the Yankees than the Angels.

If and when these two teams meet in a World Series, we can create some hype and call it the "Freeway Series." Until then, Dodgers fans should not really care.

This weekend's series will still be an exciting one to watch. The Dodgers are still on top of their game and leading the NL West, and the Angels are looking to get back in contention in the AL West.

Los Angeles Dodgers Head into Interleague Play Without a True DH

Time for Interleague Play; what more can the Dodgers need other than experienced designated hitter Manny Ramirez? Ramirez won't be available until after Interleague Play ends for the year, however. It's time for Joe Torre to go back in time and think like an American League manager.

He needs to remember the true rules of a DH in Interleague Play.

The DH cannot be used for any other player but the pitcher. Therefore, a position player cannot be used as a substitute. In this case that would be pitch hitter. Basically the Dodgers need the best hitter in the lineup not necessarily the best fielder, or a player that can focus on getting on base and knows how.

The DH may change positions to become a position player at any point during the game; if he does so, his team forfeits the role of the designated hitter and the pitcher, another player, or a pinch hitter must bat in the newly opened spot in the batting order.

I selected possible players that Torre may take into consideration while keeping to the same starting lineup.

Also I considered the past, if you recall Torre was in the AL and has managed excellent teams during his time with the Yankees. And the best example of this is when the Yankees played the Angels. Torre had Bernie Williams as the DH, and later in the game he put him in center field because of Williams' superior defensive play.

The Dodgers' roster is a little different than the Yankees' during Torre's reign. He may work in the same way with the Dodgers, even though Manny is not in the lineup.

Now there are several players that certainly need a day or two off. They include Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake, Juan Pierre, Orlando Hudson, and Russell Martin, among other everyday position players. And there are an equal number of position players that can take their roles in the starting lineup.

For instance, to provide Martin with a day off from his catching position, Brad Ausmus can take over his spot on the field, though, at the same time, Martin can still be in the everyday lineup by being the DH.

Therefore, the lineup can have all the everyday players mentioned above in it. This will allow them to receive time off from their position on the field while keeping the same batting order.

Each DH will be changed according to the AL series they are in; therefore, all of the players can receive time off.

For the weekend series against Texas, the Dodgers need the best hitter in the lineup; therefore, I would start with Martin being the DH.

This series, Texas will be playing without Josh Hamilton in the lineup, though they will have the former Dodger disappointment Andruw Jones, who is actually hitting a respectable .250 with five home runs. Tonight Hiroki Kuroda makes his first start against the Rangers. The Rangers look like a whole new team this year as they sit on top of the AL West.

Next, the Dodgers face the Oakland A's as they return to Dodger Stadium for a quick three-game series. The A’s this year are in last place in their division, though let's not take that lightly as they added veterans Orlando Cabrera, Adam Kennedy, and Matt Holliday to the lineup. Take in consideration this series is at home and the DH is not used.

Then, the Dodgers take the bus down the freeway to Anaheim to visit the crosstown rival for the second time this season, Furcal, who really needs the rest, would be a good candidate for DH duty, and Juan Castro can fill in for him at shortstop.

After the Angels, the team flies to battle the White Sox in Chicago; during this time, Orlando Hudson can move to the DH position and receive his well-deserved time off. During this time, Blake DeWitt, who stepped in for Jeff Kent during the playoffs last season, can make a great impact on the team.

Expect to see proven veteran infielder Mark Loretta as the DH or playing third throughout the AL series where a DH is used.

Finally, the last series against the AL teams for the regular season is the Seattle Mariners with Ken Griffey Jr. at home. Now it’s time to provide the outfielders with their needed rest, even though Manny's return may only be a week away. Jamie Hoffman can step in from time to time, allowing Matt Kemp, Andre Either, and Pierre to take a break. The series is at home and the DH is not in the lineup.

The year has come, the Dodgers have the talent and the chemistry to overcome their overall past record with American League teams. All the while, the team can give its position players some rest that should prove valuable later in the season.

Blake DeWitt Recalled by the Dodgers To Replace Eric Milton

Left-hander Eric Milton complained about his back aching this past weekend, so the Dodgers put him on the disabled list, recalling infielder Blake DeWitt from Albuquerque.

Milton, who was 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA in four starts, is eligible to return from the DL on June 21. DeWitt was batting .267 with two homers and 18 RBI in 38 games with the Isotopes.

Milton injured his back in his last start against the Philadelphia Phillies, and it became more noticeable when he was unable to cover first base in the third inning on a potential double-play ground ball.

Torre noticed that he didn't cover first base and was grabbing his back. The LA Times reports that, after Torre was asked why Milton didn't cover first base, Torre said he screwed up. But then he came in Sunday he had tightness in his back, "so we just shut him down."

The fact that fellow starter Hiroki Kuroda is apparently back and well probably had much to do with the move, though no one admitted to that, according to the Times.

According to these reports, Torre would not respond to when Milton would return or what role he would play when he does.

Another starter, Eric Stults, is scheduled to start throwing soon and is eligible to return from the disabled list on June 15.

The Dodgers aren't likely to use a fifth starter until they play the Los Angeles Angles, since the team has three days off over the next eight days. The extra days off are part of the reason for DeWitt’s return.

Another reason is that Interleague Play begins later in the week.

Torre said, according to these reports, "We have Monday, Thursday and Monday off, so it's a ways away...and I'm looking forward to Interleague play. I'll be able to give a guy a day off or two."

With Or Without Manny, the Dodgers Remain on Top Of the MLB

The Los Angeles Dodgers are staying on top of their game. They have become a powerful force and threat not only the National League West, but the rest of Major League Baseball.

Even though the Dodgers dropped a series to the their cross-town AL rival Angels this weekend, they still not only have the NL's best record, but the MLB best record.

Dodgers have kept a great winning record of 33-15 despite losing their power hitter, Manny Ramirez. Today, they have increased their lead in the NL West to 8 1/2 games in front of the second place San Diego Padres. The Padres ended their 10-game winning streak today, losing to the Diamondbacks.

The Dodgers went 6-2 for the week, taking three straight from the Mets before the Angels came to Dodger Stadium and won two out of three and are in the midst of winning another series with the Rockies.

The Dodgers currently have two young upcoming star pitchers. Chad Billingsley is pitching excellent this season and has a record of 6-2 with a 2.87 ERA. The younger Clayton Kershaw took a couple a games to the late innings without allowing a hit.

The Dodgers' everyday players are hitting great and a Manny-less team has become a strong threat to opposing pitchers.

Juan Pierre and Orlando Hudson begin the line up and are both hitting above .350 and are jack-rabbits once they get on base. Pierre leads the team with nine stolen bases.

With Ramirez out, Casey Blake leads the team with nine home runs. And their RBI leader is James Loney with 32.

Other role players like the young outfielders, Matt Kemp and Andre Either, are making a great impact on the team. Kemp is finally coming along, looking like a star out in center field.

Rafael Furcal and Russell Martin are playing their usual roles and playing like the stars they are.

Even the veteran bench players Mark Loretta and Brad Ausmus are making their presence felt on the team, providing the team with chemistry that works and blends together to lead the team to the most victories this season in MLB.

Memo To Raider Nation: Don't Be Surprised If Jeff Garcia Steals the Show

Oakland Raiders presumed starting quarterback, JaMarcus Russell, threw a four-yard screen pass toward running back Justin Fargas and the ball landed near his shoelaces. Meanwhile, Jeff Garcia expertly threaded the needle on a quick pass down the middle of the field to fullback Marcel Reece.

The 6'6" Russell had a pass knocked down at the line of scrimmage. Garcia, who's just 6'1", scrambled when the pocket collapsed and found a streaking Louis Murphy down field at the Raiders' compound.

Russell, entering his critical third season with the Raiders, is having trouble "just being accurate and understanding where to throw the football and when," coach Tom Cable said Wednesday, probably not realizing the indictment he had just thrown at his $60 million franchise signal caller.

Garcia, a 39-year-old with 10 years of NFL experience to go with his five Canadian Football League campaigns, has been popping off a bit lately, telling a Los Angeles radio station last weekend that the best players with the best chance of winning should be on the field for the Raiders in the fall.

Sounds like a deadly mix, right? One in which a volatile quarterback controversy could evolve and choke the Raiders' season out before it even begins? Yes...and no.

In spite of Garcia's sarcastic words—and his better performance at a recent mandatory minicamp and this week's voluntary organized team activities—there is no such storm brewing in Raider Nation. True, the words and actions may be telling, implicating in some conspiracy theorist corners, but it's only May. Check back in late September if the Raiders get off to a 1-3 start under Russell.

Plus, let's get one thing clear—Garcia was signed to be Russell's backup and mentor. Even if, as he admitted during minicamp, he might have trouble with the adjustment. Remember, this is a guy who has had to work twice as hard to get half as much in a star-crossed career that began with the NFL snubbing him out of San Jose State.

"The guys who are going to help this team win football games need to be out on the field," Garcia repeated Wednesday. "And that doesn't necessarily look at where you were drafted, or what you're being paid. It means what brings this team together the best."

Garcia also indicated that "everybody needs to understand that with the direction this team has been heading in the last few years and what has happened as far as a record standpoint is concerned, that nobody has stability at their position. That every position needs to be up for grabs. That every position needs to realize that there's competition there because nobody has been good enough to prove that they belong, to be that starting guy."

Tough talk from a backup, right?

Wrong. That is exactly what the Raiders had in mind when they brought the four-time Pro Bowler in. Basically, to light a fire under Russell's butt, what with questions about his commitment and preparation growing in an increasing number of curves.

To his credit, Russell said Wednesday he'd learn from Garcia's "eyes and experience" on the field. Even as they shared few moments chatting on the practice field, and even fewer fist bumps of support.

For now, Russell is the unquestioned starter. ESPN reported that the final decision for the Raiders begins with Al Davis who say's Russell is the quarterback this season.

Minicamp anyway is only about learning and placing the basic schemes, and dealing with situational plays.

"I have a certain approach as to what I bring to the table," Garcia stated. "Hopefully those things can mix well and co-exist (with JaMarcus) and make the position stronger and better."

If anything exists as far as quarterback competition, this will make the Raiders stronger once the season begin.

.

How the Oakland Raiders' Secondary Will Make an Impact in '09

The Oakland Raiders secondary will contribute a great deal to the future success of the defensive squad for the upcoming season this fall. The Raiders have cleared up their missing links from last season. They made these improvements from free agency and the draft to construct a blend of talented players to find the right mix in the backfield.

Cornerbacks: Nnamdi Asomugha, Chris Johnson, Justin Miller, Stanford Routt, John Bowie, Jason Horton

Signing Nnamdi Asomugha to the richest deal ever for a cornerback and locking up his teammate on the other side of the formation, Chris Johnson, has put the Raiders in a good position. Their ability to cover the pass will not be in doubt.

Looking at the rest of the group, Stanford Routt already is making an impact in mini-camp and will be ready for the season once called upon. He has great speed and will continue to make a big impact on special teams this coming season

Justin Miller made for an excellently pleasant surprise in 2008 and will continue to make a big contribution to the team, so there's only one serious question here: After missing all of 2008 on IR, can John Bowie come back? He has the ability to be one of the quickest on the field.

As for Jason Horton, there's not much to say, really; he’s been around the block several times and is familiar with NFL defensive schemes. Recently the Oakland Raiders signed this free agent defensive back; we'll see if he survives the cuts.

Free Safeties: Hiram Eugene, Tyvon Branch

Hiram Eugene stepped in to play for Raider Nation at the position when the Michael-Huff-at-Free-Safety experiment failed, though Tyvon Branch looks to have a very productive upcoming season as well.

Eugene may be Oakland's starting free safety as the season grows closer. In Oakland's scheme, a free safety is given the ability to sit back in the deep middle, leading to few tackle chances.

Branch is a hard-hitting player that is really fun to watch; he will make a larger impact than he did last season. The Raiders know Branch's skills have just begun to develop. His talents as a defensive back are just coming into place in the NFL, and he may make some starts. Branch is also used as a return specialist.

Strong Safeties: Michael Huff, Darrick Brown, Michael Mitchell, Jerome Boyd

Michael Huff is physically gifted, though he still needs a shot to prove his worth to this unit with a new defensive coordinator in place. But he is no enforcer, and the Raiders will need that in 2009.

Raiders second round draft pick Michael Mitchell will compete immediately for a starting job in a defense that will use a two-safety system where they alternate at free and strong. The Raiders experimented with that idea last offseason but abandoned the idea by training camp.

If Mitchell's hitting can translate from a small college to the NFL, the Raiders just got better against the run. Therefore, this may translate into eventually releasing Huff, especially since he's been untradeable because of a bloated contract.

Darrick Brown is penciled in on special teams. He either a versatile guy or simply one without a specialty: Starting on the practice squad last season, Brown is today listed as a defensive back on the Raiders roster, so no one really knows where he will fit and how he will contribute this coming season.

Jerome Boyd, a solid rookie free agent signing from the Oregon Ducks, may make a contribution as well. With the Ducks, Boyd had a total of 82 tackles and three sacks. He has also the ability to make the transition to outside linebacker.

The Raiders will rely on their secondary to set the tone for them on defense this year, but the front seven must get pressure on the quarterback. No secondary can be expected to hold up in coverage for long periods of time, so it’ll be up to the defensive line and linebackers to get a good push off the line.

Still, for the fans of Raider Nation, it will be enjoyable to watch Oakland defend the pass once again with so many talented players in the secondary.

What Happened to the Game I Love?

What does it mean to really play our national pastime? Are there any real superstars left?

After hearing the Manny Ramirez suspension news yesterday, I was not shocked—like many. Instead, I grew disturbed. Sports in life are created for fun, pleasure, and enjoyment.

Today, sports are surrounded by outside information. Every other day a different player is on steroids or getting into some type of trouble, made into the biggest story in the news.

Sports fans were drawn away from the NBA playoffs, NHL Playoffs, and other great major league regular season games. Where they miss a chance to focus on some of the true talented players of our time.

The media coverage of the playoff games was so minimal in comparison to someone who damaged his own life on the front stage.

On the biggest stages, ESPN built up every piece to filter information, making sports more about news than the game.

I have a passion for sports, whether it be a ball hit out of the park, a touchdown pass, a basket, or a goal, we all feel the excitement.

Even when we are watching a little league game or amateurs we cheer and clap by rooting on one team or the other. It becomes a great resource involving team members to learn skills of life, grow together, and, most of all, focus on having fun.

Though, in a professional game the major difference the professionals are public eyes putting on a show to a wide screen of people watching every little move.

That’s not how it always was.

Yes, there were always fans in the stands but the players enjoyed baseball truly for the love of the sport, not for the multi-million dollar contract, agents and other endorsements, but for the love of the game and they made it special and competitive as well.

Going back to my childhood I watched a true Dodger team with Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Ron Cey, and Bill Russell work as a true team for eight years. Working together, instinctively finding the perfect chemistry to make a team.

Even on the other side of the coin, there was competition. The Big Red Machine, a group of great hitters and fielder of their time, as well player included Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, Johnny Bench, Dave Concepcion, and yes Pete Rose before he gambled on the game.

Truly there is not that magic like this today.

Yes, there were superstars in the 70s and a great year for a good player would be 30 home runs. Even the most popular home-run hitter of the time, Reggie Jackson had only two seasons when he hit over 40 home runs.

Baseball is a game where men are supposed to have fun. Baseball is a game where athletes can shine not only as individuals but as teammates blending with great chemistry. Baseball is exciting game for all fans of all ages no mater who you are or where you come from.

I ask major league baseball to start focusing on the game not the individuals. Make the game fun again. I look at the old films of are past time and only see how great baseball was and how it can be.

Bring back the joy of baseball to all of us.

Manny Being Manny Hurts the Dodgers, League Decides To Put Him on Vacation

Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, according to the LA Times.

The season of the Dodgers was looking to be an outstanding one. The craze of the Dodgers made MLB modern-day history by winning 13 games at home to start the season, providing a glimpse of a possible championship for the Dodgers.

Though, this has come with Rodriguez playing a major role and contributing to the team's success. And now it's all in question.

According to the Times report, minor league outfielder Xavier Paul has been notified by the Dodgers that he will be promoted to fill the vacancy.

The suspension is expected to begin Thursday. If so, Ramirez won't be eligible to return until Jul. 3.

Los Angeles Dodgers Record Breaking Season Continues

Manny Ramirez and Andre Ethier homered and the Dodgers improved to 11-0 at Chavez Ravine with an easy win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, yet another story in the Dodgers record breaking NL home winning streak.

The Dodgers are dominating their division and their home turf. From the veterans like Manny, Casey Blake, and Orlando Hudson, to the youngsters like Russel Martin, Matt Kemp, and Either, the team is truly playing with excellent chemistry.

Even through, at times, the team may appear to be struggling, such as when the Diamondbacks force them into a triple play on Monday night. They survived and electrified their fans with excellent plays fielding and great at-bats from all players.

The Dodgers currently have the best record in baseball at 19-8 and appear to the front runner to win the NL west this early in the season.

Eric Stults is now 3-1, recording the win after yielding two runs on five hits with two walks.

In setting the modern-day NL record, Los Angeles topped a 10-0 mark set by the Dodgers, the 1983 Atlanta Braves, the 1970 Chicago Cubs, and the 1918 New York Giants. The big-league record is 12 in a row by the 1911 Detroit Tigers.

Dodgers Manager Joe Torre managed the last NL team to start 10-0 at home, the 1983 Atlanta Braves.

"This," Torre said, "is a better team than we had down there."

The home winning streak will continue tonight as Jeff Weaver will make his first start since late September of the 2007 season when he takes the rubber for the Dodgers.

Though, Arizona was unable to crash LA's home party.

Update: May 6,2009

On Tuesday night Jeff Weaver accomplished his task as the Dodgers continued their winning streak. Knocking off the Diamondbacks 3-1. Weaver had a solid five innings holding the Diamondbacks to only one run.

The Dodgers scored all of their runs in the first inning off Max Scherzer (0-3), who gave up four hits and struck out four over six innings. Orlando Hudson doubled with one out. Manny Ramirez, who went 0-for-3, was given an intentional walk. Andre Ethier then singled Hudson home and Ramirez came home on James Loney's ground out. Ethier scored to make it 3-0 when shortstop Josh Wilson committed his second error in as many days.

The Dodgers winning streak ties MLB record with, Ty Cobb's and Sam Crawford's 1911 Tigers that won 12 at home to start the season. In addition to that they set a new National League record by winning their first 12 home games.

Tomorrow the excitement continues as the Dodgers face the Washington Nationals.

"We've won games with a lot of offense, we've won games with strong defense," Ned Colletti General Manager of the Dodgers said. "We've won game where we capitalized on someone else's mistakes. That's the mark of a good club."

Raiders Sign Four Rookie Free Agents After the Draft

After the draft, the Raiders signed four rookie free agents and others to come.

Florida Atlantic ILB Frantz Joseph,

Joseph is a strong middle linebacker and should be at the very least depth for backing up Morrison.

He has sufficient height and bulk with long arms. He is very physical and plays with a nasty demeanor. He is a dependable tackler that delivers the big hit also he does a nice job in the box. Joeseph has a great motor. Joeseph comes from a difficult upbringing though he is the nation's second-leading tackler last season with 154 tackles. Named first All team in the Sun Belt Conference the last two years and leading tackle in school history. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNstliEo4Hs

Brigham Young OLB David Nixon

Nixon is 6'3", 223 pounds with a team-high 11.5 tackles for a loss last season. Probably may have a chance of making the team on the special teams.

Harvard DT Desmond Bryant

Bryant, appeared in all 10 games and started one last season for Harvard. He was named to the All-Ivy League second-team at defensive line after leading the team with eight quarterback hurries and finishing with four and a half tackles for a loss.

Kent State WR Shawn Bayes

Bayes is really known, as a speedster he ran a 4.35 at is pro-day. Though he is not a big receiver he has come on strong his senior season has played all four years for Kent State. He had 39 catches for 642 yards and five touchdowns last season. Bayes will compete for spot on special teams.

John Madden's Possible Return to the Oakland Raiders

Al Davis once indicated that he would secure a position on the Raiders staff with local connections to support in running the football side of things. This same person will be someone with a recognizable name and with ties to the Raiders organization.

I'm sure the secret leader Davis was most likely speaking of was the return of John Madden to silver and black. Recently, the former Raiders coach announced his retirement from broadcasting. This week, speculation about Madden of his possible return to Oakland has already come up.

Madden once was quoted as saying, "I'm not a journalist, I'm not an actor. I'm a football coach doing television. It's fun. It's my life, my passion. I'll do it as long as I can."

However, it was only last week when he made the retirement announcement. It probably won’t be long before he returns to football.

Madden coached the Raiders from 1967-78, going 112-39-7 with one Super Bowl victory, and no losing seasons. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. Today he remains close to Davis and lives in the East Bay.

With is his eyes set on the draft this weekend, there is a very good possibility that Davis might ask Madden for his opinion on the potential draft picks prior to Davis making his final decision.

In August of 2007, both Davis and Madden discussed the idea of Davis’s successor. The two communicated about the future of the Raiders franchise and who would do what Davis is doing when he decides to stop running the team or passes on.

If Davis were to pass, his wife Carol and son Mark Davis would inherit ownership. Davis then said he wants someone brought in as a consultant to run the football side of things.

Davis has been quoted at that time saying, "John Madden would have to be considered."

This past September during football season, Davis indicated he wanted to add a recognizable figure to the team front office in the near future. Though no further indications were made since then.

Madden is 73-years-old himself, and may not want to become fully involved as the general manager who runs all of the football operations. Davis has shown no signs of relinquishing his control, just yet.

Keeping that in mind, Madden may fit better in a consultant role—contributing as an adviser to Davis and the Raiders, with his great wisdom and love for the game, who Davis would trust and respect.

Madden is an X’s and O’s type of guy. Even though he has not coached for more than thirty years, he definitely knows the game. Davis will listen to him, since he speaks about strategy and player analysis more then just the basic aspects of the game.

Don’t get your hopes up, though, Raiders fans. Madden plans on staying retired.

Madden said, “no,” when asked if he would rejoin the Raiders as a consultant.

"I have too much respect for the game and for Al to think that I can do anything. The way the game is today, that's a 20 hour-a-day job. You can't go in part-time or just stick your toe in the water to be a part of a pro football team,” he indicated this Friday on his daily appearance on KCBS radio.

Even though Raider Nation may be awaiting the “Madden Cruiser,” there are no indications of him returning to the “Black Hole.”

2009 NFL Mock Draft: O's Round One Selections

The 2009 Draft is only a couple of days away, and many of us are waiting for our favorite teams to make the right pick to improve the team in the coming season. Here is a glimpse on how the first round of the draft may go. Good luck to all and have fun on Draft weekend, and enjoy Chris Berman and Mel Kiper Jr. analyze each player as they are selected in the draft.

Detroit Lions: QB Mathew Stafford, Georgia

The Lions have a ton of needs, but they are unlikely to become a winning team without a franchise quarterback to build around. Matthew is highly elite talent that could lead the Lions into the future. He is a classic pocket passer. He possesses one of the strongest arms of any quarterback on the board. Stafford makes tough throws into tight spots. He is ready for the pro style offense and will fit with the Lions.

St Louis Rams: OT Jason Smith, Baylor

In doing this, they securely replace Orlando Pace. Smith is extremely athletic with an excellent combination of size, speed, and power. He has all the talent needed to fill this position combined with a tremendous work ethic and an above average awareness. Smith, is tough and physical in the trenches, with excellent balance and would work well with the Rams for many years to come.

Chiefs: LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forrest

This selection is hands down a lock. The Chiefs need a solid starter at the strong side linebacker position. Curry will be able to fill the role quickly. He is the top defensive player in the draft. Curry is a smart and versatile athletic linebacker. With great natural talent, his speed will fit with the defense. Though, don’t be surprised if they pass on Curry and go after another pressing need, an OT, and select Eugene Monroe from Virginia.

Seattle Seahawks: OT Eugene Monroe, Virginia

Seattle has struggled this past year and a lot of it was due to a poor offensive line. Monroe is the right man to lead the offensive line in helping to protect Hasselbeck. Monroe has tremendous footwork and field perception; and he displays excellent balance and supieror pass protection. Another route for the Seahawks is to go with a quarterback as solid as Marc Sanchez or BJ Raji. If this occurs, Monroe will slide to the Bengals.

Cleveland Browns: WR Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech

The Cleveland Browns are on the clock. The receiving core is a complete disaster with the departure of Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards on his way out the door, a reciever becomes their primary need. Even though they have an urgent need for a talented defensive pass rusher.

I cannot see them passing on a gifted wide receiver. Michael Crabtree is as solid as it gets, at this position, and is an elite talent that should be successful immediately. Crabtree has the ideal size and outstanding hands. He, uses his body well to position himself well against defensive backs, which gives him the ability to make plays in the open field after catching the ball. Another possibility, for the Browns, is Brian Orakpo.

Cincinnati Bengals: OT Andre Smith, Alabama

Cincinnati needs a player that is able to protect the quarterback well and can play right away. Smith is a perfect fit for the team, since he uses his hands well and is very difficult to get around, if you get into his body. Smith is a solid athlete with surprisingly good quickness, for his size. He is able to sustains blocks and excel at the point of attack.

Oakland Raiders: DE Brian Orakpo, Texas

With Crabtree gone and the top offensive lineman already drafted, Davis and Cable elect to go with the best available and secure the other needs, later in the draft.

Orakpo is hybrid type of DE/OLB as well, something may work with the new Raiders defensive scheme. Orakapo does a good job diagnosing the screen pass and has the great ability to make tackles after the catch.

Other possibilities are Jermey Maclin or BJ Raji. The last time Davis selected a receiver in the first round it was in 1988, when he selected the Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown, and Maclin is not Tim Brown. Raji would have been my selection here, though he is too slow for Davis. BJ Raji is a good talent, though he is to slow for a defensive tackle in Al’s eyes. The last time the Raiders selected a defensive tackle was Darrel Russell. He was fast and more talented then Raji.

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jeremy Maclin, Missouri

Jaguars don’t have any great play makers at the WR position for Garrard to throw to. Maclin in and is talented enough to fill that need. Maclin is a fast playmaking wide out and will provide Garrard the target he requires. He is dangerous with the ball and has very good speed. Maclin is a threat to score, anytime he has the ball.

Green Bay Packers: DT BJ Raji, Boston College

Green Bay has series problems with their pass rush. Therefore, the team needs another pass rusher since they ranked close to the bottom in the league in sacks last season. With the radical changes to a three to four defense this year in Green Bay, it appears as though they will use this pick to acquire a piece to assist in that transition. He is a physical athlete who has great foot movement and could really benefit in Dom Caper's system.

San Francisco 49ers: DE Aaron Maybin, Penn State

Instead of addressing a quarterback here, San Francisco will fix their needs on defense. The 49ers had just 30 sacks in 2008. Maybin is a talented and versatile pass rusher. He is extremely fast with an astonishing first step. He will do a very good job reading dump off and screen passes in the NFL. He works right into the 49ers' defense.

Buffalo Bills: DE Everette Brown, Florida State

There are just a few versatile defense ends on the board. The Bills can use some young blood in the rotation and as a future face on the defensive line hunting the quarterback. Brown is a prize and an extremely versatile athlete that will contribute to the team’s defense immediately. Brown is a good size and has great athleticism. He will be able to start immediately for the 49ers and be very productive as a pro.

Denver Broncos: QB Mark Sanchez, USC

If Sanchez slides to this pick and is not select by Seattle, Jacksonville, or San Francisco, the Broncos will not pass up this opportunity even though they have two quarterbacks. Currently, neither of them have a franchise tag. Sanchez is only going to get better and should eventually become a Pro Bowl quarterback. He has great arm strength and passing accuracy.

Washington Redskins: OT Michael Oher Ole Miss

The Redskins' interest on the first day of the draft will be improving their offensive line. Therefore, they will elect to upgrade with the best available OT on the board and with Oher. Oher has the size and strength to be an elite tackle in the NFL draft.

New Orleans Saints: RB Chris Benie Wells Ohio State

Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas are good players, but neither is a pile pusher.

I wish I could mock this more intelligently, but it appears that Sean Payton believes his secondary can be successful with the additions of Jabari Greer and Darren Sharper.

Wells would be the immediate replacement for Deuce McAllister. Reggie Bush looks to be more of a specialist/3rd down back, while Pierre Thomas looks to be a better second back. The Saints don't have a second round pick, so the top running backs should be all off the board by then, but in the third round they should be able to still get another solid defensive back.

Houston Texans: CB Malcom Jenkins Ohio State

The Texans are looking to take the best defensive player available. Jenkins is the top corner and safety in the draft. Jenkins is a great value for a secondary in need of an upgrade. Jenkins is a top-notch athlete with rare quickness and speed, for a CB of his size. He has great talent, size, and competitiveness that will lead him to have a great future in the NFL.

San Diego Chargers: DE Tyson Jackson LSU

San Diego looks to improve their defense with either a three to four defensive end, and Jackson fits that scheme perfectly. He is versatile and has the ability to play end or tackle. His restlessness as a pass rusher and his outstanding effort will make him a solid starter in the NFL.

NY Jets: QB Josh Freeman, Kansas State

Wide receiver would make a lot of sense here, but things get tough with the quarterback position. The Jets are starting a new era and are far from knowing what their quarterback identity is needed. Ryan wants to bring a new quarterback to be his guy in his first season. Freeman’s stock has been rising, and the Jets are interested.

Denver Broncos: ILB Ray Malaluga, USC

The Broncos will begin the defensive upgrade and will look to inside linebacker Rey Maualuga to lead the young defense. Maualuga gives the Broncos a director for the defense and a start on their new three to four. He is a fast, strong, and an athletic linebacker with great explosiveness. He has the given ability to be very productive for the Broncos defense scheme and should start immediately.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: WR Percy Harvin Florida

The Bucs get a very good play making wide receiver here to help them in the 2009 season. Harvin's versatility on the field will lead him to become a very productive wide receiver in the NFL. He has great hands and is able to make tough catches seem routine. Harvin has the great ability to find holes while running with the ball.

Detroit Lions: OT William Beatty, Connecticut

Now that the Lions have made it clear that Matt Stafford will be their first pick. William Beatty had a great Combine, and considering how much offensive tackles have been reached for in recent drafts, the Lions will be lucky if the Connecticut product is available here. With Beatty in the lineup, Jeff Backus will move to left guard, thus improving two spots on a front that surrendered 52 sacks in 2008.

Philadelphia Eagles: TE Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State

The Eagles get the best all around tight end in the draft. Britt and Nicks are on the board, but the Eagles think Pettigrew is too good of a talent to pass up. He may lack the speed down the seam, but Pettigrew is a physical run blocker with the size to be the red zone target they need.

Minnesota Vikings: OT Eben Britton, Arizona

The Vikings need an improvement offensive tackle since Ryan Cook has been a bust. Therefore, they decide to select a good one. Britton has the size, strength and athleticism to become a solid NFL tackle. Has the strength to lock up the defender and push out of the play. Britton could become a versatile offensive lineman.

New England Patriots: CB Vontae Davis Illinois

The Patriots will grab a phenomenal athlete. Davis is corner that has the combination of good size, strength, and speed to become an elite player in the NFL. He is considered as one of the best athletes in the draft.

Atlanta Falcons: OLB Brian Cushing, USC

The Falcons are reportedly enamored with USC's trio of linebackers and will be content to take who-ever falls to them with this selection. In this scenario, Cushingwill fill the role of the strongside linebacker where it was absent last season. Cushingis a physical presence who will bolster the strong side and support the pass rush.

Miami Dolphins: CB Darrius Butler, Connecticut

Miami elects to fill a need in the secondary by adding Butler. Butler has all the athletic gifts to continue to play at a high level at the next level. He is an excellent athlete, with the quickness and agility to follow receivers in and out of their breaks. He is one of the best corner prospects in the draft.

Baltimore Ravens: WR Darrius Heyward Bey, Maryland

For Joe Flacco to take the next step in his development, the Ravens need to find a receiver who can take advantage of Flacco's strong arm. There is no better deep threat in the draft than Heyward-Bey. Flacco gets his weapon; Bey ran a great 40 yard dash and is a home run hitter.

Indianapolis Colts: DT Perria Jerry, Ole Miss

The Colts primary focus this offseason should be to upgrade their running defense. Jerry is an athletic defensive tackle that fits perfectly into the Colts' defensive scheme. If Jerry is off the board, the Colts could reach for Evander Hood or Ron Brace. Another option is a running back. Joseph Addai's injuries, in 2008, raise some concern about his durability.

Buffalo Bills: OLB Clay Matthews, USC

Buffalo lacks at the linebacker position and can use a little improvement here, and Matthews has the focus and strength to fill in the Bills' need. He plays with a great intensity on the field. Matthews is an effective pass rusher, using his speed to get through the holes.

New York Giants: WR Kenny Britt Rutgers

Barring a trade for a wide receiver, Britt is the best option on the board to replace Plaxico Burress. Remember he does not have to be the No. 1 receiver right away, but his size provides a red zone option. Britt is a game changer, when he has the ball in hands. He has outstanding strength and accelerates to top speed very quickly.

Tennessee Titans: WR Hakeem Nicks from North Carolina

The Titans need a wide receiver in the first round, though they have not taken one since 1998. Though, Nicks has everything it takes to make big plays in the NFL. Nicks has excellent, large hands that giving him the ability to catch high passes in traffic. He is a very smart route runner, who does an excellent job concealing his route.

Arizona Cardinals: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

The Cardinals have a clear need for a running back to compliment Tim Hightower. Arizona fans will be thrilled if Knowshon Moreno makes it all the way to No. 31. Moreno is one of the top players in the entire 2009 NFL Draft, but his stock has taken a hit with his 4.640 time.

Moreno could add an element that the Cardinals' offense really lacks. Edgerrin James is pretty much done, while Tim Hightower does too much dancing around. Moreno could be an enormous upgrade. His running and receiving skills are a natural fit for an already dangerous offense. Moreno has the ability to move well through tight places, a trait that can lead him to become one the elite backs in the NFL.

Pittsburgh Steelers: OL Eric Wood, Louisville

The Steelers allowed 49 sacks a season ago and have done nothing to improve their offensive line this offseason. Wood has worked out with the Steelers as a guard, and they were reportedly impressed. His versatility is an added bonus, having played guard at Louisville. Max Unger or Alex Mack at center would also be a realistic option here.

Now us fans can only sit back and enjoy our favorite teams make the right decisions to improve their team on draft weekend.

Oakland Raiders Have Five Potential NFL Draft Directions on Day One

The Oakland Raiders' staff has many decisions to make in the next few days with the NFL draft only days away. Here are five different perspectives on how the Raiders' draft could play out in the first two rounds.

The Raiders made a point by filling in their needs on offensive line this offseason by making a trade and signing free agents.

The Raiders' main focus for the draft will primarily be on fixing needs on the defensive line that was 31st against the rush last season, while providing JaMarcus Russell with a primary target at the wide receiver position.

The popular take has them walking away with the best available wide receiver with the pick, though in the second round of some mock drafts, the Raiders are selecting an offensive lineman over a more pressing need—the defensive lineman.

Popular Take

In the first round, the popular take is Jeremy Maclin, the wide receiver from Missouri. This is a popular first round pick because he will provide Russell with the missing additional target. Currently, there are many mock drafts that have the Raiders selecting Maclin. However, Maclin’s lack of height and disappointing 40 time did nothing to impress Al Davis.

Tom Cable is the coach, and even though they signed many free agents this offseason on the offensive line, it still remains a thought of many that the Raiders are in fact thin on the line.

In the second round, many mock drafts have the Raiders going with an additional offensive lineman, possibly going with an offensive tackle like William Beatty from Connecticut or Phil Loadholt from Oklahoma to help the line protect the rush.

Smart Take

The smartest move would be to take B.J. Raji, the defensive tackle from Boston College. He is a great nose tackle that can make all the difference for the Raiders' defensive pass attack by forcing havoc on the blockers and being able to get to the ball carrier quickly.

However, make a note of this: the last defensive tackle Al Davis took in the first round—Darrel Russell, in 1997. He ran a 4.8 40-yard dash while weighing 320 pounds. Raji is not even close to that speed, which basically means he might not be athletic enough for Al.

In the second round, the smart choice would be to select Brian Robiskie from Ohio State. Robiskie has both the speed and hands to succeed in the NFL. Robiskie is a reliable route runner, and he is a surprisingly fluid athlete for a wide receiver of his size.

Davis' Take

This is where Al Davis makes his selection. Wide receiver Michael Crabtree is the preferred selection because he has superstar written all over him. He will sell jerseys and become a fan favorite.

The true, clear answer to the Raiders' receiving problems is that they already have a couple of speedsters on the team, and now they could pick up their good route runner with great hands. However, if he's not available, don't be surprised if Al goes for a speedster like Darrius Heyward-Bey from Maryland.

In this take, Davis will select Michael Johnson, defensive end from Georgia Tech, in the second round. Johnson is the type of fluid athlete Al Davis loves. I have a hard time seeing Al Davis passing on him if he is available in the second round. Johnson is 6'6" and runs a 4.6 40 time, which is fast for a defensive end.

Lucky Take

In the first round, the cards may fall in the Raiders' hands. Specifically, if both linemen, quarterbacks, and Crabtree are selected prior to the seventh pick, Aaron Curry may be available.

No, a linebacker may not be the answer to a pressing need, but acquiring a true quality player in this year's draft to play on defense will be a nice fit. On many draft boards, he is the No. 1 prospect in this year's draft, and if he is still on the board at seven, I see the Raiders jumping on that pick without hesitation.

In the second round, I see them taking the best available wide receiver, and it won’t be Hakeem Nicks—too slow for Davis. In the second round, they may draft Kenny Britt, a wide receiver from Rutgers. Britt can be the missing receiver that can go down the field. With Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chaz Schilens, this will create a nice young receiver nucleus for Russell.

FINAL TAKE

If Crabtree is off the board, the better decision for the Raiders may actually be Percy Harvin, the wide receiver from Florida. He was the perfect receiver for Tim Tebow. Harvin is no slow cookie and a good route runner. He has the ability to catch over 100 passes this season and make Russell look more effective in the meantime.

Something Al never seems to miss is speed and quickness, especially in a wide receiver, and Harvin has it. A CBS insider mentions, “Harvin hits top speed in an instant.”

He is explosive coming off the snap, and that acceleration allows him to be consistent. Once he gets in the open, he can take the ball to daylight. The only thing that may make the Raiders hesitant in selecting him and move in a different direction is his size.

In the second round in this take, I see the Raiders selecting defensive tackle Jarron Gilbert from San Jose State.

He looks like the ideal fit for the Raiders' defensive scheme—a versatile player with experience at defensive tackle and at the defensive end position. Even though he is 6'6", he has the ability to play low and be very dominant.

The 2009 NFL Draft is only days away. The Raiders have a lot of different ways they can go to improve their team this coming season with all five of their draft picks.

Orlando Hudson Hits For The Cycle In The Dodgers Home Opener

Orlando Hudson of the Los Angeles Dodgers hit for the cycle on home opener at Dodger Stadium. The finishing touch of the cycle came in the sixth inning with a triple against long-time division rivals the San Francisco Giants.

The “O dog” singled in the first, followed by a home-run in the third and a double in the fourth. This was all against the future Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson.

A beautiful highlight in the making, Hudson slid into third base ahead of the throw from right-fielder Randy Winn, the umpire signaled safe as Hudson pointed to the sky.

Hudson became the first Los Angeles player since Wes Parker on May 7, 1970, to hit for the cycle for the Dodgers, and the first to do so at Dodger Stadium. Parker's feat came at New York's old Shea Stadium. Orlando, is the ninth player in Dodger franchise history to complete the cycle.

The Dodgers breezed to victory against Randy Johnson and the Giants, 11 to 1.

LA Dodgers Beat Jake Peavy for the Second Time Ever, Lose To Chris Young

The Dodgers emerged from Opening Day with a 4-1 victory over long-time nemesis Jake Peavy. It was a day when almost every Dodger did as the fans had hoped. Rafael Furcal and Orlando Hudson reached base and both stole a base to start the game.

James Loney slugged both in with a two RBI single to left; Matt Kemp homered and made a spectacular diving catch. Hiroki Kuroda got the Dodgers into the seventh with only a scratch wound of a single first-inning run. Cory Wade and Hong-Chih Kuo held the lead; and Broxton shut them down in the ninth with 100 MPH balls of heat. As for Manny, he was shut down and struck out once at the plate though they came out with a victory.

They had Wolf making a start in the second game; what a mistake to have the fourth pitcher start on the second day. Randy Wolf couldn't protect the Dodgers' lead in the sixth inning, and the Dodger bats struggled against Chris Young. The Dodgers were held to no-hits for the last five innings of the game. Last season, the Dodgers won all three games against Young.

The Dodgers have struck out twenty times over the first two games. On the plus side, Matt Kemp hit (2-for-4) and James Loney (1-for-3) remained very productive, and Will Ohman and Ronald Belisario made smooth debuts out of the bullpen.

Though this is second game into the season, this not what fans expected.

NFL Mock Draft Round One, The Anticipation Of 256 Young Men

The NFL draft a game show where young men from college are chosen to bring greatness and excitement to the professional ranks and truly become warriors on the football field. With a great anticipation the young men await their prize.

On April 25-26 in Radio City Music Hall all the excitement begins. Thirty-two teams have the same goal to find the right men to make their team exceed and contribute to winning a Superbowl Championship.

The stage is on we know the rules in place and its time for the show. Ready to see Mel Kiper and Chris Berman provide the fans with the detail specifics on every pick for the next two days.

Roger Goodell makes his entrance on to the stage with big announcement and a card in his had with the first pick overall. The cameras and lights flash and now we know only a glimpse of what’s in store for the next couple of days. Then we hear the fans up on the balcony.

The commissioner reads with the first pick overall the Detroit Lions select Mathew Stafford Quarterback from Georgia. Matthew is a classic pocket passer. He possesses one of the strongest arms of any quarterback on the board. Stafford makes tough throws into tight spots. He is ready for the pro style offense and will fit with the Lions. Since he has all the measureables teams look for in a quarterback.

Wow, that went quick now the Lions probably knew that selection a month ago. Matthew comes to stage hold up a Lions cap and team jersey and puts a on with a smile on face for the camera with his family and agent. The Rams are now officially on the clock. While this happening Matthew is being interview by the press.

The same scenario goes on for the next five to ten picks.

With the second overall pick the Rams will select offensive tackle Jason Smith from Baylor. In doing this they securely replace with Orlando Pace. Smith is extremely athletic with an excellent combination of size, speed and power. He has all the talent need to fill this position combined with a tremendous work ethic and above average awareness. Smith, is a tough and physical in the trenches with excellent balance and would work well with the Rams for many years to come.

Chiefs are on the clock. Time almost runs off the clock Kansas City a sure pick for many though there are many discussions for a team in the war room on what best for the team. Most people think they will select Aaron Curry since he is the best pick in the draft and how could Kansas City pass on him. Though my guess is that Kansas City takes another direction and makes a safe move and gets a polished Offensive lineman. Remember, the Chiefs, just traded for a new quarterback and now they need someone to block for him. The Chiefs currently have eight linebackers on their roster. With the third pick overall the Kansas City Chiefs select Virginia, Offensive Tackle Eugene Monroe to help protect their Cassel.

Monroe has tremendous footwork and field perception. Displays excellent balance and superior pass protection. Should contribute to the Chiefs immediately.

Seattle Seahawks are on the clock. I would put an offensive lineman here though its just not going to happen at this time with the top two already selected. Therefore, with the forth pick overall the Seattle Seahawks select Linebacker Aaron Curry from Wake Forrest. Most believe he is the top player in the draft. Curry is a smart and versatile athletic linebacker. With great instincts and speed makes well fit with a 3-4 or 4-3 defense. He will make a tremendous impact for Seattle for many years to come as a pass defender.

The Cleveland Browns are on the clock. The receiving core is a mess with the departure of Kellen Winslow departing and the lacking in effort from Braylon Edwards last season is just not cutting they need a solid number one receiver. Even though they have an urgent need for a talented defensive pass rusher I cannot see them passing a gifted wide receiver. With the fifth selection overall the Cleveland Browns select Micheal Crabtree. He is a solid as it gets at this position an elite talent that should be successful immediately. Crabtree has ideal size and outstanding hands. He, uses his body well to position himself well against defensive backs giving him the ability to make plays in the open field after catching the ball.

The Cinninatti Bengals, are on the clock. Most say the Bengals to select a Defensive position need though in all actuality they had the 12th ranked defense overall. Compared to the 29th overall Offense team. Therefore, with the sixth selection overall the Cinninatti Bengals select the best available offensive tackle Andre Smith from Alabama a perfect fit for the team since he is one of the best 3-4 players in the draft. He uses his hands well and is very difficult to get around if you get into his body. Smith is a solid athlete with surprisingly good quickness for his size. He is able to sustains blocks and excel at the point of attack.

Raiders are on the On the Clock, Al Davis is on the phone with Cable dictating and making his authority stand out. Oh, bye the way Al , Crabtree is off the board plan B. Cable gets into it I need lineman ok says Al lets go defense. With the seventh overall pick the Raiders select Boston College defensive tackle BJ Raji. Raji is a strong athlete that creates a force against the run. He uses his hands well to shed blockers. His swift speed allows him to get into backfields and re-direct plays. He will become a solid pass rusher for the Raiders for many years to come. Another possibility is a receiver though, I think they will address in the second round.

Jacksonville Jaguars are on the clock, they need a franchise wide receiver. The Jaguars don’t have a franchise player at that position for Garrard to pass to. With the eighth pick overall the Jacksonville Jaguars select Wide Receiver select Jeremy Maclin from Missouri. Maclin is a fast playmaking wide-out and will provide Garrard the target he needs.

The Packers are on the clock. Green Bay has series problems with their pass rush. Therefore, the team needs another pass rusher since they ranked close to the bottom in the league in sacks last season. With the radical changes to a 3-4 defense this year in Green Bay it appears as though they will use this pick to acquire a piece to assist in that transition.

With the ninth pick overall the Green Bay Packers select Brian Orakapo from Texas. He will play Outside Linebacker in the 3-4 as an edge rusher. He is a physical athlete who has a great foot movement and could really benefit in Dom Caper's system.

San Francisco 49ers are on the Clock. Many think that Mark Sanchez will be selected here though they really need a pass rusher over a QB. With the tenth pick overall the 49ers select Defensive End Aaron Maybin, from Penn State. Maybin a talented and versatile pass rusher. He is extremely fast with an astonishing first step.

With the 11th pick overall Buffalo selects Defensive End Everette Brown from Florida State. Brown is a prize and extremely versatile athlete that will contribute to the team’s defense immediately.

Denver Broncos with 12th pick overall select Quarterback Mark Sanchez from, USC. Since neither Kyle Orton nor Chris Sims has the potential of becoming the next franchise quarterback for the Broncos, Sanchez will be the answer.

Washington Redskins with 13th pick overall select Defensive End Robert Ayers from Tennessee.

New Orleans Saints with 14th pick overall select Chris “Beanie” Wells, Running Back from Ohio State

Houston Texans with 15th pick overall select Malcom Jenkins, Cornerback, from Ohio State.

San Diego Chargers with 16th pick overall select Tyson Jackson Defensive End, from LSU

NY Jets with 17th pick overall select Percy Harvin, Wide Receiver from Florida. The Jets have a new head coach and now their ready for new receiving game beginning with a great wide out for a new era of Jet football. The Jets fans are now screaming from the balcony. Finally the Jets get their man.

Denver Broncos with 18th pick overall select Ray Malaluga, Outside Linebacker from USC

Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 19th pick overall select Josh Freeman, Quarterback, from Kansas State

Detroit Lions with 20th pick overall select Brian Cushing, Outside Linebacker from USC. After selecting a Quarterback first they go after another need by selecting a very good defensive player

Philadelphia Eagles with 21st pick overall select Brandon Pettigrew, Tight End from Oklahoma. State. The Eagles get the best all around Tight End in the draft.

Minnesota Vikings with 22nd pick overall select Michael Oher Offensive Tackle from, Ole Miss

New England Patriots with 23rd pick overall select Connor Barwin Defensive End from Cincinnati

Atlanta Falcons 24th pick overall select Louis Delmas, Safety from Western. Michigan

Miami Dolphins 25th pick overall select Clay Matthews, Outside Linebacker from USC Whatever Parcels decides to make this selection he knows the pick will bring great reward he still the TUNA.

Baltimore Ravens 26th pick overall select Vontae Davis, Cornerback, from Illinois he is considered as one of the best athletes in the Draft.

Indianapolis Colts 27th pick overall select Perria Jerry, Defensive Tackle from Ole Miss

Philadelphia Eagles 28th pick overall select Knowshon Moreno running back from Georgia

New York Giants 29th pick overall select Darrius Heyward Bey, Wide Receiver from Georgia Tech

Tennessee Titans 30th pick overall select Wide Receiver Hakeem Nicks from North Carolina

Arizona Cardinals with 31st pick overall select Defensive End, Larry English from Northern. Illinois

With the 32nd and final pick of the first round the Pittsburgh Steelers select Offensive Tackle Will Beatty, from Connecticut.

Round One comes to a close its time to give a commissioner a break and continue into calling the names dealing with the trading cards for rounds two through seven into the second day of the event.

Teams with no selections in first round have picks in the second round therefore see their first picks below.

Chicago Bears with 49th pick overall they select Oklahoma, Offensive Tackle, Duke Robinson

Dallas Cowboys with 51st pick overall they choose Alabama, Safety Rashad Johnson

Carolina Panthers with the 59th pick overall the Panthers select Utah, Defensive End Paul Kruger

This draft is completely based on no trades on draft day.

Most of the game show players are still in search of their prize playing the waiting game by sitting at home by their TV sets waiting for the phone to ring like a sweepstakes.

For some of them once the first round is over if they are selected on the draft they may never make it to the glamour of reaching the true prize of becoming a professional athlete in NFL. Though they did win that day even the last-man selected in the seventh round Mr. Irrelevant.

Oakland Raiders Agreed to Terms With Jeff Garcia

Quarterback Jeff Garcia, a former starter for the San Francisco 49ers, will soon be playing for the team that resides for the silver and black. The Raiders confirm according to NBC report that Jeff Garcia is in signed with the Oakland Raiders.

He will be a mentor to Russell and giant upgrade to Andrew Walter and Bruce Gradkowski “The 39 year-old quarterback will have the opportunity to compete for the starting position with JaMarcus Russell, though Garcia will likely serve as a backup.”

Garcia a three-time Pro Bowler with the 49ers earlier in his career. Spent the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Garcia is now ready to come back to the Bay.

Garcia, has proved that he could be a solid safety net in the event starting Quarterback Jamarcus Russell were to go down with an injury, Garcia would provide valuable experience and leadership qualities to the team.

Oakland Raiders Mock Draft: Rounds One through Seven, With a Trade

The Raiders and Al Davis realize there is a lot of talent in the first two rounds that may fill multiple holes without selecting a top ten prospect. They may already have a trade in mine.

Therefore, the hype with BJ Raji or Michael Crabtree being the pick at seven to the Raiders might not be the best choice overall for the team.

The prospective trade needs to fit both teams’ interest. I found that there are only two teams that really meet with this approach. If it were to take place the Eagles or the Bears are the best fit.

Each team has a mid-to-late selection in the first round and they may want to move to select a top ten pick. Additionally, each of them are NFC teams and each team will be awarded compensation picks in the draft, even though those picks cannot be traded.

After realizing what holes the Eagles have to fill they seemed to be the better fit for the trade. First of all they have additional picks in the draft without being award the compensation picks. Unlike the Raiders who now only have five picks in the entire draft. Additionally the Eagles will be awarded compensation picks in the later rounds.

The Eagles primary needs include running back and an offensive lineman. The Eagles have the 21st and 28th overall picks. Two great selections the Raiders can take advantage of in the first round to select a top notch wide receiver and defensive tackle.

Additionally they may pick up their 133rd overall in fifth round as well. Making the trade means finding equivalent trading value.

The best five players available not including a Quarterback will most likely be taken in some type of order prior to the seventh pick overall.

Aaron Curry

Jason Smith

Eugene Monroe

Michael Crabtree

BJ Raji

Others in the top 10 include a receiver, a defensive end, and an offensive linemen the Eagles may just have their eye on.

When it actually happens, the Eagles select the seventh overall pick.

Now lets view the Raiders draft selection using this trade concept. The Raiders will provide the Eagles with the seventh pick overall and award the Raiders with the 21st and 28th pick overall in the first round and also provide the Raiders with a fifth round draft selection to make the trade equivalent.

At this rate Raider fans should be so excited, jumping off their seats. The Raiders will be able to cover three holes in the first two rounds and gain solid talent without suffering to pay for a top 10 draft picks.

If they want a receiver and a top pass rusher they will be able to select excellent talent in the later part of the first round, moving to the draft selection with this trade concept in place.

The Raiders with the 21st pick overall from the trade with the Eagles select the talented Wide Receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey from Maryland. A talented receiver with good hands with the ability to run routes very well, in addition to being extremely fast.

With the Raiders second pick in the first round from the trade the 28th pick overall. The Raiders will select Michael Johnson Defensive End from Georgia Tech. His 40 time on his Pro Day was great Defense End at 4.49 something Davis will definitely be proud of. He has the physical tools to become a dominant pass rusher for the Raiders.

In the second round the Raiders select with the 40th pick overall Defensive tackle from Boston College Ron Brace.

Brace might lack the name recognition of BJ Raji his teammate from Boston College though he still is very explosive and has a massive body frame and great lower body strength and is very versatile. He will become a great talent for the Raiders pass rush for many years to come.

Moving to the third round the Raiders will snatch their Safety. Al Davis might already have his eyes on the player, Safety from Clemson, Chris Clemons. Clemons had great numbers in the Combine that won't be passed up by the Raiders.

Wow, the Raiders with this trade are able to fill in their primary holes and select four possible starters prior to the fourth round.

The Raiders next two selections will continue to plug in their holes on defense and pick out a linebacker and a back up guard.

In the forth round the Raiders will select Jason Phillips Linebacker from Richmond. Phillips is very instinctive, forceful player and will be able to display solid talent in the pro level for the Raiders. He may turn out to be one of hidden gems of the draft.

With the trade the Raiders will additionally be awarded a fifth round to make the trade value equivalent. The Raiders with this pick will select Guard Louis Vasquez, Texas Tech.

Vasquez is an elite pass protector, giving up only one sack in his two year career as a starter. He has excellent lower body strength and wingspan. Though, he suffered injuries in his college career that make him a late round draft pick.

Since a recent trade with the Dolphins they lost their sixth round draft pick though they still will have their seventh round selection. With this pick, they will choose a back up quarterback that will be valuable contributor and compete for the behind Russell and Walter, since most of their primary needs will be covered in prior rounds.

The Raiders will choose Quarterback Tom Brandstater from Fresno State with their final selection in the 2009 draft. With the Bulldogs he had 2,478 total passing yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 picks, giving him a 59.8 completion rate in his senior season.

Brandstater has a great arm strength though he can improve his accuracy, mechanics and weakness of ways he deal with pressure which would compliment his strong arm immensely.

The willingness and pursuit of top 10 draft pick by the Eagles can only make this happen. The Eagles do have two first round draft picks and may want to move up to the seventh pick to pursue a top ten prospect.

The Raiders on the other hand have multiple holes even though the team has strengthen their offensive line this off-season they need to decide what their best options are. The Raiders pursuit of a trade like this may become a tremendous advantage to the team.

Dodgers Starting Pitching Staff Equipped for the Season Without Their 5th Man

As Opening Day nears, the Dodgers still do not have their fifth starter in place, or do they?

Dodgers filled in their offense by signing Manny and Hudson to short-term deals. Though the Dodgers are still avoiding filling in the making of a true pitching staff to be a prominent contender in the west.

The Dodgers have the offensive power to score three to five runs or more this season with a great starting lineup. Though, what about the pitching, is it capable of surviving a season without a true fifth starter?

Last year they had Penny and Lowe in the beginning of the season to proven veterans, and now both of them our gone. They also had Maddox assisting they young pitchers on how to lead your team to the seventh inning.

They also knew Takshi Siato was a decent closer.

All they had to do was pitch six to seven innings and more than likely secure a win, especially with Broxton being the set up man.

Now Broxton moved to the closer role for the team. He will probably do a good job since he is a proven relief pitcher.

Here is the current starting pitching staff the way it looks today, barring injury or trade.

No two players are more important to the Dodgers this year than Billingsley and Kershaw. They are two very young and talented pitchers that should play keys roles in the Dodgers' success this year.

Chad Billingsley, a 24-year-old right-hander, was actually the 10th best starting pitcher in the majors last season.

He struck out 201 batters and improved his ERA after the All Star break to 2.99.

Though last year Chad clearly led victories, strikeouts, innings, etc., he's become the latest staff ace, even though he just turned 24. He will most likely will do even better this season.

Second in their rotation is youngster Clayton Kershaw, a lefty. Kershaw threw 160 innings as a 20-year-old. If Kershaw is able make 30-plus starts during the season, he'll push past 200 innings pitched, unless the Dodgers limit his workload.

Here is a kid that will continue you to improve and develop as the season gets into full swing. Expect great things, and he may be a very special pitcher to watch in the coming months. Hopefully he will continue his development to be recognized as one the great Dodger pitchers.

The other two starters on the rotation this season are veterans.

Hiroki Kuroda, a right-hander from Japan who might be on the decline of his career at age 34; however, he posted 31st in starting pitchers last season.

Kuroda last season was a roller coaster that continuously had its ups and downs. Kuroda does have the ability to change his speeds very well. He has a fastball that could reach up to speeds of 97 mph and a splitter that has been recorded at mid to high 80s. This may give him an edge to beat out Billingsley in becoming the opening day starter.

The forth starter in the Dodger rotation is Randy Wolf, a proven veteran lefty.

Wolf returns to the Dodgers having completed a full, 33-start season with two teams.

Wolf's final 12 games with Houston were among the best stretch of baseball he has thrown in years, though he still keeps you nervous when he pitches, as he can become very inconsistent at times.

For the Dodgers, he will provide another lefty for the starting rotation. Barring an injury, he has the potential of having over 30 starts this season.

Finally, what to do for the fifth and final spot on the rotation in the beginning of the spring. The right-handed, veteran pitcher Jason Schmidt was the preferable choice, since he seemed like his past injuries were behind him, and staying healthy was more on his mind. He last started in June 2007, so at this rate don’t really expect too many sparks out of him.

Torre stated that Schmidt needs longer then five days between starts. It sounds like he will stay in extended spring training or start in AAA to build up arm strength.

In this case the Dodgers may need to sign Pedro Martinez or make a trade. The most likely candidate for the fifth spot on their rotation should be Stults, since Estes, Vargas, and Milton are not looking good this spring.

The Dodgers still look like they can possibly have a historical season, even if the current rotation maybe lacking the fifth starter on their team. As long as the pitching staff is effective, the team will succeed.
