Dallas Stars Trend of Failure on Home Ice Becoming Expected

After a well put together win in Detroit on Wednesday night, the Stars flew home to do battle with the Columbus Blue Jackets, but appears that they left a bag in the Motor City; the bag containing the Stars' ability to play on home ice.

In one of the more one-sided games this season, the Stars were downed by the Jackets 4-1. Even more impressive, the Stars have generally always been able to count the Jackets as a win since Columbus joined the league, yet no watchful eye could tell that from Thursday's performance.

What's even more insulting is the fact that three of the four Columbus goals came on the man advantage, and the other came short-handed. Can anyone else find an issue here?

If that doesn't make a good, loyal Stars fan sweat a bit then I have information that will. To anyone who has witnessed a game at the American Airlines Center, you know it's a great venue, always a great crowd, and always die-hard supportive. Yet the Stars post a better record outside of Dallas.

At home, the Stars post a 3-3-3, and a record of 6-3-3 on the road. It is true the Stars have been on the road a lot, but the road trip is supposed to be when the wheels fall off, not in front of the home fans.

Even more concerning is the fact that the Stars now play seven of their next nine at home, four of which will be in a row. Anyone else not liking the way the evidence points here?

Sure, the Stars simplify things on the road, that much is clear. Possibly, their focus is better after the long trip, or the team even finds relaxation in the luxury suites they enjoy. Problem is this is a team that's supposed to win in front of their fans, not the other guy's.

The Stars need to learn what is working on the road can work at home. Simplify, don't take stupid penalties, and above all, keep it simple. These tried and true parts of their game have been successful on the road, and for their three wins on home ice.

The Stars consistently put a great product on the ice, and this team is one of the most talent-packed I have seen in years, yet they struggle every other game.

All I know is, after this seven of nine if the Stars don't have their mind together and play like they should I'll pay attention to the baby stars. Not only are AHL tickets cheaper, the Texas Stars also actually win games in Cedar Park (north of Austin)!

The Stars face the New Jersey Devils at 7 PM at American Airlines Center. For those interested in Texas Stars' product they face the Milwaukee Admirals Friday night at Ceder Park Center at 7:30 PM.

Russians Worth the Risk?: NHL Draft Time Could Prove Answer

With Blue Jackets prospect Nikita Filatov skipping the country to return to native Russia to play in the KHL, does it serve as an example of a growing problem in the NHL?

It could be that Filatov is an isolated incident, and merely a player incapable of understanding he needs further development and growth to compete at the NHL level, but with draft rankings already coming out for the summer will it hurt Russian prospects? Most likely.

American and Canadian players have no back up option really, I suppose they too could skip off to the failing KHL but there seems to be a difference in the image of hockey between North America and Russia.

I learned of all this thanks to the ever genius Ken Campbell of The Hockey News , but there were some things he skipped over that I feel are important. Campbell made the point Filatov will play in the KHL for $800,000 (his NHL salary) when had he chosen to play in the AHL it would have been $65,000. To quote Campbell "Hard to argue with that kind of logic."

Truthful, but Campbell almost seems to pat the ever child-like Filatov on the butt. We're talking about a kid, regardless of his nation of origin who wants to be an NHL star yet is unwilling to do the hard work to make it happen. I say let him fail, and be stuck in the failing KHL.

Problem is, did Filatov, and a rare few other Russian's who couldn't take the heat of being told they weren't the next Ovechkin their first day in camp and skip back home ruin it for the others?

Maybe, but the problem becomes do they deserve it...

While Filatov clearly appears to be a baby, who couldn't take the pressure of playing with the big boys, or take the criticisms of bench boss Ken Hitchcock, opted for the less successful and stressful KHL—not all players are willing to cry rather than step up to the challenge.

Imagine Alex Ovechkin if he had been told he needed more work and development. Judging by his personality, he would have gone to the AHL, recorded amazing numbers, and busted his butt to get into the NHL. So clearly not all Russian's are to blame, or can be grouped together like Nakita Filatov or Nikolai Zherdev before him.

While many GM's come draft time will possibly be more watchful of Russian players, many already likely look for a player with talent and the personality to take the stresses of development. Being Russian, Canadian, or even Chinese wouldn't matter to these guys, and all will fall under the same scrutiny to general manager eyes.

As the prospect rankings proceed on with the NHL year, the Russian players would be dumb to think such news doesn't hurt their ratings, or marketability, but if their talent and personality show they're not the cry-baby types some of their countrymen are and more like Alexander Ovechkin—who overcomes every challenge—they shouldn't have any problems making it into the league and developing into the superstars they hope to be.

As for Filatov, and those who can't take the heat? They should be barred from the best hockey league in the world, and forced to be labeled as the hack's they are. If you're not willing to do the work, don't waste a GM, team, or fan's time.

Ken's Corner: Are the Dallas Stars Lions or Tame Kittens?

Much like the above photo, the Stars have taken parts of this season right on the jaw, and with little consistency to the team in sight, it seems likely they will continue to.

While their record over their last 10 games isn't too terrible, 4-3-3 isn't worth being proud of.

Over the course of the week, the Stars dropped from being second behind San Jose to being second to last, losing valuable points to Los Angeles, which they had no control of due to the schedule, and Phoenix, which they should have won a game against Saturday night.

The question becomes are the Stars the real deal, or are they a team that looks better than they truly are, destined to sit out of the playoffs again.

One stat worth recognizing is the goal differential. The Stars, over the course of 19 games, have scored 59 goals, while giving up 57. While I admit the stat can be deceiving, this isn't a usual issue the Stars have.

Currently sitting on the outside looking in of the playoffs, having given up points to Phoenix, the Coyotes and Stars are currently even on points.

While four teams could make the playoffs from the Pacific Division, it's not likely, and the Stars should plan on being in third place if they have hopes at the playoffs.

The problem on the ice is even more difficult, the Stars goaltending and philosophy has appeared to be strong, yet the Stars have dropped games they shouldn't, and lost way too many in the overtime and shootout.

The Stars top scorers in Brad Richards, James Neal, and Loui Eriksson have all played well, but it appears likely more scoring from Mike Ribeiro and Brenden Morrow could mean the difference between sitting out come May, or playing for the Stanley Cup.

In the end, I get the nagging feeling where the Stars are sitting in the conference at the end of the month will likely prove whether they are a team worth fearing, or just a tame infant kitten in the division.

Here's hoping the Stars don't wait until Christmas to find consistency under their tree. By then, it will be too late.

California Dreaming: Dallas Stars Conquer Shootout and San Jose Sharks

Random Note : It really angers me when I have to resort to an outdated photo. Getty Images mega lets me down with a lack of updated hockey photos. At least the photo fits the game from Thursday night.

The Stars and Sharks matchup in San Jose on Thursday night was a dream come true, and delivered a real battle, not just on the scoreboard, stats sheet, or in highlights, it was a real, old school throwback to the style of hockey that started the rivalry back in the '90s and moreover it had the look of playoff hockey.

Additionally, good news leaving the game was that Dallas actually won in the shootout. I'll allow you a moment to re-read that previous line, because you didn't read it wrong.

The real big news of the game didn't happen until the third period, which found Dallas down 2-1 with about half the game left. I wasn't disappointed, as always when I got up and turned my back from the game Mike Modano scored the tying goal.

While the goal is important, there is more noteworthy small scale stuff to take note of. As stated the game had a playoff atmosphere, and the San Jose fans showed they are among the best in the NHL by making HP Pavilion a difficult arena for a team like Dallas to play in.

The Stars played, and checked hard and so did San Jose and the 2-2 score after regulation was a good representation of the fact the two teams were as evenly matched as Andy Bensch and mysel f said. Furthermore, the play on Thursday night makes even more proof that the likely winner of the Sharks/Stars series will likely win the Pacific Division.

Besides the proverbial monkey off the back by winning in the shootout, thanks to an impressive goal by defenseman Stephane Robidas the Stars pulled are currently within two points of the Los Angeles Kings for second in the division. Unfortunately unless Dallas starts getting consistent wins San Jose could run away with it (like they usually do) points wise.

With two games remaining on their road trip, the Stars gained valuable points before meeting Phoenix and Detroit. Both teams have a lot of talent but thanks to a hard fought battle on the Stars end, and a spectacular performance by Marty Turco the Stars began their road trip in perfect fashion.

The Stars meet the Coyotes in Glendale on Saturday night at 7pm. The game will be telecast on FSN-Southwest, and could be a good indicator of if the Stars can, and will seize momentum from the important victory in San Jose.

Brett "Hall of Fame" Hull: Paying Homage To an NHL Legend

There's something about tradition and family when it comes to hockey; it is what makes the sport as amazing and life changing as it is. With this article, I'm able to remember some of those life-changing times and remember times gone by that seem in some ways just like yesterday.

I knew the name Brett Hull, and to be honest, for much of his career, I only liked him playing next to Mike Modano in the Olympics, otherwise he was a St. Louis Blue, and an enemy. Not to overshadow his time as a Blue, it was a legendary time in his career, but I will let a Blues fan who knows that stretch much better than myself right that article.

For me, all I can tell is the end of his career.

My father often brought home big Stars or NHL news home from work when I was a kid, and I remember like it was yesterday the day he brought home the printed page reporting the Stars signing Brett Hull.

My father and I smiled together, knowing the change to the Stars for the upcoming season, and although nothing was said regarding it, we were both dreaming of a Stars Stanley Cup with the new addition.

To call Hull a personality in Dallas is an understatement. From the beginning, he seemed to be the missing piece. He made Ken Hitchcock's blood-pressure rise and elevated the play of every Star he played with. With talents in the organization such as Sergei Zubov, Mike Modano, Guy Carbonneau, and Joe Nieuwendyk, Hull was one of many talents but always found a way to be front and center.

To the heartbreak of many Blues fans, Hull loved Dallas, and he loved being a Star, and it showed in his work ethic on the ice.

With his new identity in Dallas, Hull changed to No. 22, since his legendary 16 was taken by feisty enforcer Pat Verbeek. Ironically, I think there was a purpose behind the number change: Hull needed a fresh start and a fresh identity, and in Dallas he got one.

When Hull had the puck on his stick, my father and I always held our breath, anticipating a goal, and we both always took notice to the energy the entire Dallas team showed when Hull was on the ice.

Most of those moments Hull's first season in Dallas were met with my father recollecting on Bobby Hull, and his memories of watching Brett's father. He commented once that I'd never know Bobby as a player, but at least I would know Brett.

I have had the blessing of not only seeing Brett as a player, but as a co-general manager and front office official with the Stars. I saw his jersey retired by St. Louis, and anticipate the same from Dallas, things my father never got to see.

Brett Hull's Stanley Cup winning goal brought the trophy to North Texas for the first time ever in 1999. The look on Hull's face was that of pure joy, and the relief of finally winning was easily seen. While the goal may be questionable (give it a rest, it's been 10 years) the joy and dedication of Hull in those playoffs is without question.

Hull's stint with Dallas was shorter than many Stars fans had hoped, and he would end up playing for the rival Red Wings and winning another cup with Detroit. Sadly, the only autograph of one of my father and my favorite hockey players would be from Hull as a Red Wing, but the jersey never mattered for Hull; he loved the game, and he left it all on the ice.

Hull finished as a Coyote, sorta. After a short stint with the Coyotes in 2005, after the lockout, Hull felt his game wasn't up to par and retired in October. The organization, which had retired his father's No. 9 as the Winnipeg Jets allowed Hull to wear the number as a Coyote. A truly great moment for the father-son hockey duo.

With Brett's No. 16 hanging in the rafters in St. Louis, and Bobby's No. number 9 in Phoenix, the Hull's are the only father-son duo to have their numbers retired in the NHL.

Hull couldn't leave hockey forever and returned to the Stars in a front-office role, and before long, due to the firing of GM Doug Armstrong, became a Co-GM for the team he'd help lead to the Stanley Cup.

Going out on a limb, Hull helped sign controversial agitator Sean Avery, which likely sealed the end of the Co-GM situation. Regardless of the signing's failure, Hull is still a major voice in the organization and will help new GM, and former Star teammate, Joe Nieuwendyk turn the Stars back into a team like they remember, a champion.

Brett's play touched so many lives, his abilities, talents, and personality made it easy for boys to idolize him. With his, among many other great hockey players being added to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 9, it becomes clear the old guard of the NHL is slowly disappearing, which is why I write this homage.

Even with the memories fading, the jersey's hanging, and the old film clips looking older by the year it becomes clear that Brett's career is over. It's clear my son will never know Brett Hull the player. Instead, my son will likely know Brett Hull the front office builder of Dallas Stars Stanley Cup Champions.

From a long time fan, Thanks for the memories of the past, and those yet to come Brett. Congratulations on your achievements, because no matter what you achieved in your career you were a class act and never forgot us, the fans.

Ken's Corner: No Mike Modano? No Problem! Stars Doing Well Without Veteran

While much of this article is almost blaspheme in the Dallas hockey realm, it is true.

The early chunk of this season has shown that the Stars can be successful without longtime veterans who had been on the ice for the 1999 Stanley Cup win, especially veteran Mike Modano.

Modano played in one regular season game and left early due to a rib injury. It's certainly nothing serious, but I would add that his age has definitely prevented him from healing as quickly as some of the young pups would.

While the length of Modano's injury might usually be a concern, it's not. If anything, it has served to show how strong this Stars team is without their longtime veteran center.

I expected a while back when Brad Richards was brought in that he was expected to pick up the slack when the day eventually came that Modano would retire, and Richards has filled those shoes well so far.

The injury to Modano has allowed rookie Tom Wandell to gain valuable NHL experience, and he has done well playing up with Dallas. The same can be said for the rookies that have been brought up due to injuries to longtime winger Jere Lehtinen.

My guess would be that Lehtinen will either retire or not be with the team come training camp next fall. He has been plagued by injuries for the last several years, and even from a longtime fan's standpoint, it seems time for Lehtinen to go.

While Modano is generally healthy, this season may be the beginning of the end for his career. This is where the hard part for some fans comes in. The sooner Modano leaves, likely for a front office seat, the sooner a young Stars forward can step into his spot.

Assuming that the young player was able to get some time in the NHL this season, it is likely he will step in and handle the position very well.

I applaud Mike Modano for his assuming of a more supportive role with the Dallas Stars over the last couple years. He knows that the best impact he can have now is on the young players entering the system, and most likely even injured he is still an important force on their development.

But for those fans who wait for No. 9's eventual return, know that a lot of good is happening on the ice with him gone. A glimpse at the future is what we see in games right now, and so far the future looks bright.

Dallas Stars Lack Of Consistency a Cause For Concern in Big-D

To say the Stars haven't had a successful season so far would be a lie, then again after last season anything seems like a success. The problem is that the Stars aren't improving as the season grows older.

In their last ten the Stars have posted a 5-3-2 record, nothing to sneeze at but for a team that appears incapable of winning in the shootout, and making it count in overtime there are questions to ask, and hopefully answers can be found.

It would be an outright lie to say the Stars aren't getting points they need from extra time, but their overtime loss record is oddly similar of the New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs, both teams likely won't be making the playoffs.

The concern is if Dallas can't stop its extra time woes they could find themselves yet again on the outside looking in come spring. With it appearing clear at least three teams, if not four will make the playoffs from the Pacific division. The good news is Dallas holds their destiny in their own hands, but the time is running out for them to make things out in overtime and shootout.

The overtime and shootout issue is on top of a consistency issue. The Stars never appear to be the same team two nights in a row. One night they string together an amazing effort without any flaws, and the next they make every error in the book.

While in past years all eyes for the consistency issues would be on Marty Turco, his play has been strong when the Stars have needed it most and backup Alex Auld has been strong in his starts, at least until recently.

The good news is Dallas is only two points, one victory from tying the Pacific division lead, but the bad news is Phoenix and Los Angeles both have 18 points to Dallas' 17 and appear stay above Dallas in the standings.

For Dallas to truly achieve its goals for the year, they have to start focusing every game and placing more emphasis on the basics. If the team does this the likely-hood of stringing wins together goes up significantly and has fans in my position no longer showing concern over consistency.

I'm confident that if Dallas can address the consistency issue, the overtime issue will go the way of the dodo bird. I only hope the Stars find their groove, or exorcise their demons before January, when the points get much harder to come by and injuries pile up.

Ken's Power Rankings: Western Conference Locked in Tight Points Races

With the NHL season about 10 games in, we have a fairly decent perspective on what teams really have going for them. Out west there are lots of surprises worth taking note of, but how many will be able to hang on for a playoff berth? That remains to be seen.

Below are my Power Rankings as of Oct. 27, 2009.

1. Colorado Avalanche - The Avs have been flying high all season and have gotten scoring from everyone, especially Wolski, Statsny, and O'Reilly. Craig Anderson has been phenomenal for Colorado and having a 4-0 record at home is a sign of good things to come. With a four-game road trip on the horizon, the NHL could see if the Avs are truly capable of keeping their winning record alive.

2. Los Angeles Kings - Having won four straight, the Kings are among the hottest teams in the NHL. The Kings' firepower could easily close the gap on Colorado in the future, but as of now, they take a back seat to the Avs. Kopitar, Smith, Brown, and Frolov are leading this team in all the right ways. With a game Wednesday night against the San Jose Sharks, the Kings get their second opportunity to get a win over the Sharks, the question is can they do it on the road?

3. Calgary Flames - The Flames are red-hot right now, getting scoring from all their key players. Add into the mix a talented defensive corps and you have a team capable of going deep in the playoffs. Miikka Kiprusoff is off to a stellar start and shows no signs of weakness—which is likely why the Flames have won three straight.

4. Chicago Blackhawks - Just one point behind Los Angeles, the Blackhawks are a scary team to see on your schedule. Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane both have 10 points in 11 games and show no signs of stopping their offensive charge. The Hawks' defense is suffocating and their goaltending is usually solid, but with occasional crease hiccups, the Hawks may need to address problems in net later in the season.

5. San Jose Sharks - Facing the Pacific-leading Kings on Wednesday night could prove a good time to show strength or crumble under pressure. For the Sharks to reclaim top-dog status in the West, they need a win over Los Angeles; but regardless of their position the Sharks are a solid team. A slow start hurt the Sharks early on, but the addition of Dany Heatley has so far been a good investment.

6. Dallas Stars - A somewhat rough start may have kept Dallas from being the top dog in the Pacific, but the Stars are finding talent in youth like Loui Eriksson, James Neal, and Jamie Benn. Brenden Morrow—after missing most of last season—is back to his old form, while Marty Turco and Alex Auld have held down the crease duties quite well. Injuries are again an issue with Dallas, with Mike Modano and Jere Lehtinen having missed most of the season so far.

7. Vancouver Canucks - Roberto Luongo may have struggled early on, but his team is on the up-swing now. Henrik Sedin picked up the slack left by his brother, and the Canucks are looking like a solid team all around in the West. Their away record is a little weak, but solid play at home has helped them stay in positive position. A three-game winning streak has things looking good in British Columbia.

8. Phoenix Coyotes - After a fast start, the Coyotes have slowly cooled down, especially after losing two straight. The Coyotes new defense-first style under first-year head coach Dave Tippet has the team heading in the right direction. Solid goaltending from Ilya Bryzgalov has the team looking to make the playoffs. Ten points in 10 games from Shane Doan isn't too shabby, either.

9. Columbus Blue Jackets - Last week, the Jackets chalked up three losses and lost their last game against Los Angeles, but Columbus is still in the playoff hunt and seems to be switching positions with Phoenix in the points race for eighth in the division daily. With Rick Nash's 15 points in 10 games and Steve Mason playing well, the Jackets seem like a solid team, even with the slip-ups.

10. Edmonton Oilers - Dustin Penner is finally meeting expectations in Edmonton, but an up and down season and two straight losses barely have the Oil above the Coyotes in the race for the playoffs. Edmonton is capable of better than seventh position in the West, but with a game against the visiting Colorado Avalanche, things in Edmonton may get worse before they get better.

11. St. Louis Blues - Having played only nine games and a slow start has left the Blues scraping for points of late. Chris Mason has struggled a bit more than would be expected and Andy McDonald isn't showing his usual talent for assists, but if the Blues can find their stride, they should be a playoff team. The loss of T.J. Oshie to an appendectomy will only make things harder.

12. Detroit Red Wings - Although Chris Osgood is surely a Hall of Fame goalie, his numbers this season have been terrible. The play from backup Jimmy Howard has been just as bad. The Wings aren't as solid as last year, but still have more talent than their record gives them credit for. It's a rare sight to see the Red Wings being outscored, and even more rare for consistent losing by the Winged Wheel.

13. Nashville Predators - A 3-6-1 record is a prime example of why the Preds are so low. Goaltending issues again plague Nashville, who just cannot seem to catch a break. If the Preds can't record a win over the limping Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night, then just stick a fork in them for the season.

14. Anaheim Ducks - Utterly putrid may be one way to describe the Anaheim Ducks, and underachieving may be another. The Ducks have way too solid goaltending to be this low, but errors by Jonas Hiller in his time as a starter have caused the Ducks some issues. Additionally, sophomore Bobby Ryan's lack of scoring, and difficulties to find the net for the rest of Anaheim's top players, may leave the Ducks on the outside looking in come spring. Having lost four in a row, including to the Toronto Maple Leafs, doesn't help any.

15. Minnesota Wild - The Wild are 3-0 at home, and 0-8 on the road. Regardless of the amount of talent you have, that's just terrible. Mikko Koivu and Andrew Brunette are the only bright spots on the team right now. The only other real positive I can say about Minnesota is at least they're not the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ken's Corner: Pacific Division Setting Standard For Western Conference

Preface: Some of the point’s totals given for teams may no longer be correct, as this article was written over the weekend and has just now been posted.

With the hockey season now in full swing the battles for points within respective divisions is on fire. Some teams who started out strong still remain strong, many of which are surprises. Early on in this young season, the Pacific division has been worthy of recognition with the possibility that four of the five teams could make the playoffs.

The Northwest division has also solidified itself as a top dog, but that should come as no surprise to anyone. Instead the surprises lie in teams such as Los Angeles, leading the Pacific, Phoenix, who is showing it could make the playoffs for the first time in recent memory, and the Dallas Stars, who are turning it around after one of the most disappointing seasons since the move to Texas.

All but one of the Pacific teams has double digits in points, and two—Los Angeles and Dallas—are tied in points for first. Anaheim is the only team not considered a contender as of now, but the talent in Southern California could easily help the Ducks rectify that.

What does the talent packed Pacific mean for hockey?

If nothing else, it proves to warm climate hockey naysayers that hockey is just as popular on the west coast.

Additionally, the resurgence of hockey in Phoenix may save the franchise, although I admit there is still a long way to go. Although the fan base is limited, a playoff berth coupled with the new winning outlook brought in by coach Dave Tippett could help boost attendance.

Hockey in California these days is a beautiful thing. The rise of the Kings has California fans dreaming of their second Stanley Cup in the Los Angeles area. The Ducks, although easily forgettable due to bad play so far this year were the first to dip the Stanley cup in the Pacific Ocean when they won it in 2007. Additionally, the San Jose Sharks aren't a team to forget either and could even bring the Stanley Cup to the Bay area, although that would require them shaking their playoff demons off.

The Dallas Stars have found talent in their youth. With injuries early on in the season, sophomore James Neal and rookie Jamie Benn have been performing well. Rookies called up from the AHL Texas Stars have also been playing well, and Brenden Morrow, after missing most of last season, looks back to his true form this season. If the Stars can battle through injuries, they should make the playoffs and could even win the division.

The winner of the Pacific division is a long way from decided, but on this is for sure the Pacific is talent-packed and will continue to set a winning standard in the Western Conference.

It wouldn't be far-fetched to believe that half of the Western Conference's playoff teams could be represented by the Pacific division. Although unlikely, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a Pacific division team winning the Stanley Cup. Either way, the Pacific is a division worth watching.

Ken's Corner: Dallas Stars Battle Hard On Southern Cali Road Trip

Generally I'm not the type to lead an article with a fight photo, but that's exactly what the Stars did on this road trip. They battled hard in two games, and recorded valuable points in both.

Dallas 4, Anaheim 2

It's no secret the Ducks have been limping out of the gate so far this year. Even when Anaheim began the physical play, Dallas came right back and kept up the physical action. The action at ice level got so heated, in fact, Francis Wathier—a call-up from the AHL Texas Stars—brought out the fists against Anaheim enforcer Mike Brown.

The physicality also got drawn into question with a slew foot, or cutting a player's feet out from underneath him by an opposing player's foot, by Evgeny Artyukhin on the Stars' Matt Niskanen. Nisky left the game dazed with a concussion and would not appear during the L.A. game on Thursday night.

Marty Turco looked fairly solid, including during a late-game surge by the Ducks, and injuries heading into the game continue to be a concern, especially after losing Niskanen to a head injury.

The third period wasn't so fantastic, considering the stumble by the Stars and allowed Anaheim to climb back in it, but the Stars held on and recorded the win.

What we learned

Whether Anaheim's losing streak will remain a constant this season remains to be seen, but if nothing else the Stars stepped up to the physical challenge that is playing the Anaheim Ducks.

Additionally, Marty Turco looked solid and the Stars collected two points in a game that they should have. Unfortunately, the injuries are mounting. We also learned Anaheim forwards don't back check, which is something to look forward to the next time the Stars and Ducks meet. Maybe goaltending isn't the issue in Anaheim?

Dallas 4, Los Angeles 5

The fast start in Anaheim didn't carry over to the Staples Center. Instead, it was all Los Angeles for the first two periods. The Stars looked flatter than a tire in a construction zone.

The score favored the Kings 4-1 entering the third period, and we for sure got to see a different Stars team in the final 20 minutes. Dallas came out aggressive and got Los Angeles severely on their heels when Stars forwards had the puck.

The third period was all Dallas, with Jamie Benn, Mark Fistric and James Neal helping lead the Stars into the overtime. Alex Auld looked a little shaky in net, and that scaredy-cat appearance carried over to the extra frame, allowing for a somewhat simple five-hole goal by Michael Handzus to give the Kings the OT win.

Regardless of the massive amounts of bad with the Stars' play against the Kings, the Stars didn't let the score get to them and battled back to earn a point in the game. Even losing their fourth game in extra time this season this single point could make or break a playoff berth.

What we learned:

Marc Crawford's philosophy appears to be working quite well in Dallas. The injuries are appearing to wear on the team, but with James Neal and Jamie Benn picking up the slack, it's hardly time to sound the alarm in Big-D.

It's hard to say Dallas deserved points out of the Kings game, but they definitely stole one. It would have certainly been interesting to see how Marty Turco would have been against Los Angeles, as Auld didn't seem comfortable. Most of all, we learned this Dallas team is tough and won't be out of a game all season until the final horn sounds.

The Stars next game will be against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday at 7pm in St. Louis, Missouri. The Blues have only played in seven games so far and have seven points. Not too shabby for a team that hasn't looked altogether strong so far this season. The game is viewable on KDFI-27 in Dallas or able to be heard on 1310AM The Ticket in the Dallas/Forth Worth area.

Phoenix Coyotes: Coach Dave Tippett's Start Shows Wayne Gretzky Wasn't So Great

No one can deny the skill and domination by Wayne Gretzky on the ice, but behind the bench as head coach in Phoenix he was a bit of a joke.

His hair began to make him look more like Ellen DeGeneres and he was always playing the crybaby on calls. Additionally, he was supposed to be the savior of the Coyotes, the Great One leading his team to a championship, yet the Coyotes slipped deeper into the standings and bankruptcy.

Yet, a sun run may be rising in the desert with head coach Dave Tippet. After being let go by the Stars, Tippet was one of the best coaches available and Phoenix immediately snatched him up. And with a start like the Coyotes are having this season, it's no wonder.

In 2005, Gretzky became coach of the Coyotes and during his stretch behind the bench, the Coyotes were usually not a team to be feared. The Coyotes finished higher than last in the division only once during Gretzky's tenure. That single time was last season, when the limping Los Angeles Kings had a worse team than the Coyotes. (Hard to imagine, but true.)

Gretzky deserves all the adoration one can give for his on ice talent, but as a bench boss, he showed such skill on the ice doesn't transfer off.

Ken Hitchcock, head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, probably wouldn't be so pretty on skates. Even with the fact that "Hitch" never played the game himself, he is still one of the top coaches in the sport and even led the 1999 Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup.

I can't say whether it's Gretzky's Ellen DeGeneres haircut, or whether his mind just can't see the game from behind the bench, but I can certainly say he won't be remembered for his time as head coach.

Tippett, on the other hand, has turned a young team that would likely be dead last in the West under Gretzky into a potential sleeper come spring. The Coyotes have had the pieces for the last couple of years and under Tippett's system and coaching talent, it finally seems the Legos are coming together in Glendale.

While Tippett's great defensive hockey mind and early winning record may not keep the team in Arizona, it is certainly a step in the right direction to a rise out of the basement and a possibility to show the NHL and its fans that hockey does belong in Arizona.

In time, maybe the Coyotes fans will remember the good old days and begin filling up the arena, regardless of its location. Regardless, Tippett may be the desert dogs' last hope at survival in Arizona, and thus far he doesn't appear he will fail.

Ken's Corner: NHL's Top 10 Sophomores to Keep an Eye on in 2009-2010

While the hubbub so far this early season is hot teams and new rookies, the beloved baby-faced rookies of last season have now grown into hard nosed experienced veterans and are largely forgotten. For example, some in Los Angeles have seen the resurgence of the crown but may miss the fact of Drew Doughty's influence since a full season has passed since his addition. The same can be said for all the rookies on this top ten list. My largest criteria was that the player be expected to live up to expectations and fill voids this season within his respective team. Many were top rookies last season and are now looking to adjust to the pressures of growing into an NHL veteran. The sophomores listed are in no particular order.

Begin Slideshow

Ken's Corner: Top Five Reasons to Read the Theo Fleury Book

When I was asked to discuss the new Theo Fleury book Playing With Fire, which has as much swearing, drug use, and vulgarity as the movie "Crank It," took me awhile to take it seriously.

I grew up watching Fleury and would easily regard him as a great player, and a textbook definition of a gritty enforcer forward.

I took special note when Fleury was on the ice, I had found a similar type of style on the ice to his own, but then his off-ice antics came out.

The NHL during my years of youth were similar to a good daytime soap opera. Ed Belfour wanted people to know "who the f*ck he was" while getting belligerent after having too much to drink at a hotel bar in Dallas.

Marty Brodeur also had off-ice drama, and Theo was in and out of rehab and treatment clinics every week it seemed.

My father and I both questioned how a man with it always together on the ice could unravel off of it. His new book makes it clear of his own true turmoil from his youth.

Let me first say Theo is a victim, not only of abuse by a coaching figure, but also of his own mind. His lessons learned, spelled out in his book, make many points young hockey players should learn, even if it may leave them with nightmares.

My only negative opinion is that I feel as though his book, and Theo, abuse his youth as an excuse for the poor choices he made as an adult. He had money, and resources to get truly clean from drugs and weed out the emotional causes of his drug use, but he didn't.

While some will point out his victimization, I refuse to allow that to be an excuse for his behavior. Additionally, many of his latest claims to fame, including a comeback on the ice, and the books release seem to coincide with a money-making strategy.

Alas, I digress, because regardless of the moron and loser I think Fleury is for his attempt to make excuses for his behavior, there are valuable lessons to be learned. Below are the top five...

5. Parents should be more involved with their kids sports activities

I can't say that Theo's parents are a reason for his abuse. Most likely they are not, but I have seen plenty of parents who view hockey as a baby sitter without much regard for the child's welfare.

Many coaches do have the utmost best intentions, but there are still those who do not.

4. The value of seeking justice, no matter the cost

Unfortunately for Theo, justice will never be truly served for the crime against him. Additionally, the silence by Theo and countless others for as long as it was likely led to more victims.

Theo spent much of his adult life a victim trapped within his own mind, and has the strength now (regardless of possible hidden intentions) to tell his story so that other victim may feel the strength.

Hopefully, children and adults alike will see his strength and take guidance from it to seek justice when we have been wronged, no matter how painful it is.

3.The power of hockey - Theo lost basically everything because of his love of hockey. He lost his youth, innocence and later on his sobriety because of his abuse.

The one thing that kept him together was the sport he played and loved. That's a powerful message regardless of a player's background.

2. The power of the human spirit

No matter what life has thrown at Theo, he never fully gave up on himself. He came dangerously close and didn't.

I ask if Theo can get through the things he has, it certainly makes studying for finals or that job interview seem a lot less terrible, huh?

1. The power of faith

"The redemption part is something I never thought I'd achieve," Fluery said in a Toronto Star article. "You look at where I was in Santa Fe about six years ago, to where I am today, how does that happen? That's where you know there's a God."

Fluery cleaned up his life for his wife and young son, that's a powerful strength that after all the raw pain and terrible things Fluery has endured he is able to enjoy his life now, through his faith and his sobriety.

While I have reservations about some aspects regarding the book, I do plan to read it. There is nothing more powerful than the human spirit, and regardless of his intentions, previous mistakes, or even excuses for said mistakes as long as they went on he is now clean, sober, and a happy guy. Could he have been earlier with the programs the NHL sets up? Yes.

Could he have come to grips with his pain earlier and saved himself a lot more pain? Yes. But regardless, Theo Fleury now has a message to tell, and one worth listening to, regardless of your opinion on him.

Ken's Corner: Thoughts On The Dallas Stars' Last Two Games

Boston-Dallas, 3-0

The best place to start is in the beginning, even though it would likely be less painful if we didn't. Dallas lost in a very one sided game on Friday night to the Boston Bruins, 3-0. The score gives the Stars a lot more credit than they deserve though as the Stars first loss of the season was an utter disgrace.

The good news is we saw the bad side of Dallas, and likely a side coach Marc Crawford won't let the locker room forget anytime soon. After an all out assault on Nashville earlier in the week it's possible Dallas just came in soft against the Bruins, but Boston tore apart the very little effort the Stars put into the matchup.

The Bruins were bottom line better at everything on Friday night. Faceoffs, powerplays, shots, hits, and even puck control along the boards always went the way of the B's. The Stars were consistently left scratching their head while the little red light behind Turco shined.

What we learned: Dallas looked just plain awful against Boston, and in every aspect of the game epically failed. Last season's all time low was the UFC look-a-like against the Bruins in Boston and this season it was the wheels falling off in Dallas.

The difference is this team doesn't have the off ice distractions to let this one be a season ender. The loss to Boston can only serve to teach, and Marc Crawford will surely use it to drill his philosophy and hard work home to his players.

Dallas-Chicago, 4-3

Saturday night in the windy city was a completely different animal. The Stars were still outplayed but at least at the United Center they were just out played and didn't look flatter than a squirrel on the interstate.

Oddly enough, most assists on the Dallas goals should be given to Chicago goaltender Cristobal Huet.

"Until Cristobal Huet stops allowing goals that would get a junior high kid benched, the Blackhawks won’t be able to maintain a winning streak." Chicago Blackhawks Featured Columnist Tab Bamford had to say.

"Huet allowed four goals on 25 shots against Dallas. The performance, or lack thereof, from Huet on Saturday night was mediocre and his mental lapses cost the Blackhawks a game they dominated."

Even as a Stars fan, I won't deny his sentiment that the Hawks deserved the win, they showed more heart and clearly outplayed Dallas in the first twenty minutes. Dallas evened out in the second and third but Chicago still was the better team.

What we learned: During the first period on Saturday the Stars looked the exact same as they did against Boston, and through the stellar play of Alex Auld in net were able to maintain a 0-0 lock.

Once the second period began, Dallas began battling more and made the contest a bit more even. Chicago still appeared to be the better team but once Dallas evened out the effort being exerted the scoring began for them. Dallas once the first goal was scored maintained the lead going forward and even got some soft (and even hilarious) goals on Huet.

Dallas did their best on the road against a seemingly better team and got the win, that's all you can ask for this time of year.

The Stars will face the Los Angeles Kings at American Airlines Center on Monday at 7:30. The King's come into the game on a fast start, stay tuned for a pregame report for the game since the Kings are truly a team to get a win against.

Be sure to also check out my latest look at a problem with the NHL. America vs. Canada: The Divisiveness of Hockey in North America

America vs. Canada: The Divisiveness of Hockey in North America

Hockey has always been about the us versus them mentality, and apparently that train of thought has tainted the Board of Governors, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and now the best fans of any sport in the world.

When I played hockey, nothing thrilled me more than seeing a young hockey player fresh on his skates and learning (usually around six years old), asking me for help or advice. I always took pride in helping him learn the sport and spreading my love of the game.

Canadian fans, that's you. You're the experienced player with so much history versed in a sport.

Warm climates, such as Dallas, Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, Phoenix, and many others are the young-ones. Hockey is popular in some, and others not so much. Usually regardless of the success or great fan bases of these teams, I usually always see them grouped in with less talented ones in Florida, Atlanta, and Tampa Bay, and that isn't fair.

Regardless of the talent of the team, winning record, or number of season ticket holders I see a lot of fans, generally when calling for team retraction, forget the fans of those teams.

I only became enraged enough to consider this article when I saw the Dallas Stars grouped in as a team that should be retracted on a Hockey News comment from a reader. It got me to thinking about what's wrong with fans today.

I'm not saying you're not entitled to your opinion regarding warm climate hockey, everyone is, but I feel too many get caught up in anger and emotion rather than clear thought.

While I do agree Canada isn't represented enough, I would have to say that the southern expansion of hockey was about spreading the game. Would you be angry at a young kid trying to learn and not doing well because he's trying to take your sport? No, of course not.

So why not hope for success in places like Phoenix? A place that until a move from their original home in Phoenix ripped the team away from much of its fan base. If Phoenix fans can step up to the challenge now with threats of losing the team, don't they deserve to keep it?

Yet there are other teams to consider. California teams have been successful, some in the past and others currently. Their fans are some of the most intelligent in the world, and I would point out I have met some Duck fans more die-hard about hockey than I am.

Teams such as Atlanta, Florida, and Tampa Bay though always come up in the argument, and I would argue due to the numbers I have seen two of the three teams wouldn't be bad for relocation. Atlanta's fans (although I can't say first hand) have been steadily decreasing over poor performances on the ice.

If the case becomes clear they have already given up on their team then the team should move. Furthermore, having two teams in the Sunshine State when it can barely support one is utterly brainless. Either way, when talking of relocation the fans have to be in the front of one's mind, and they're not.

Instead it seems the article has come to the have's vs. the have not's.

That shouldn't be the case.

I would argue Canadian fans should be proud of hockey in warm climates and at spreading their native game to amazing new fans. Some would say American fans could never be like Canadian fans; I'd argue that you've never been to a Stars game. Those are some crazy fans.

Hockey is about bringing people together; my being a hockey fan and writing for Bleacher Report has earned me many Canadian fans, and many more fans from warm climates. So remember the next time you get sucked into the relocation argument that the fans and the game are what matter, not your own selfish opinion.

Do what's best for the game and not you as a fan. Hockey isn't about making money (something Bettman and the Board of Governors forget), its about the camaraderie and spirit of the game. Remember that the next time you argue relocation or about how some warm cities don't deserve a team due to location and climate.

What's the answer? A fan's merit isn't based on their favorite team or where they're from. It can be clearly seen that some teams should be moved, and I can likely name three, two of which if they moved I would say should go to either Canada or far northern cities.

In regards to future locations, I think of those possible three teams moving, they should consider:

Seattle (just seems like a cool place to have hockey and they could use a hockey team after losing basketball), one to Kansas City (they built an arena and were strung along by the Pittsburgh Penguins—having grown up there I know first hand the fans who drive four hours as season ticket holders for the Blues), and one to Hamilton or another Canadian city, centrally located for a lot of fans.

Relocation can't be easily talked about, and should never have a lot of emotion in the conversation because it views fact from opinion. Going forward, stop seeing Canadian fans and American fans as separate; we are one in our love for the game of hockey. We're one big family, so why get so split over placement of teams.

Cheer for their success and know the pain those fans have when they lose those teams. Going forward as fans, let's do what's best for the sport and maybe one day we'll have a Commissioner and Board of Governors who will too.

Red River Rivalry: Texas Football in Terms Of The Texas Penal Code

Now that the giggling has worn off from the use of the word "penal", I'll explain my topic. It occurred to me while studying for my Criminal Justice class that Texas' team this season is oddly similar to the Texas Penal Code (Texas State Law). First, in setting up the similarities of Texas Law we must understand what's at stake for the two sides.

The likely winner coming out of the Red River Shootout will still have hopes at a top level bowl game if not the BCS National Championship. If nothing else the likely winner of the Big 12 south will come out of Dallas the victor.

Having been to the Red River Shootout a couple of years ago, I know the amazing atmosphere the game has. The State Fair of Texas and the best rivalry in all of college football go hand in hand, and this year, if I were a betting man I'd pick the Longhorns from Austin to win.

Why? Because the law says so.

Within Texas Law is a statute nicknamed the "Castle Doctrine", long story short in Texas you have the right to protect your home and property at any cost, including the taking of a life if they threaten your life, home, or property.

The Castle Doctrine reminds me of the Texas defense.

Regarded as one of the best ever in the Mack Brown era the "invaders" from Oklahoma could be very lucky with only a few points this year in Dallas, even with stud play-caller Sam Bradford. Bradford ran up the score on an improved Baylor team in Norman last week, but he could find things more difficult on Texas' semi-home soil.

Texans are proud of their right to bare arms, and no bare arms are more popular in Texas than those of Colt McCoy, and man does McCoy have an arm. The Heisman candidate last year is yet again a top candidate.

He has no need to conceal and carry when he's at home and can be accurate at any distance. The second amendment is alive and well in the Texas offense, and will likely be strong against Oklahoma as long as the offensive line provides protection.

Finally, Texas is long known for taking pride in the fact we still have the death penalty, and even with drama surrounding ever execution the state is still proud to embrace the punishment for crime. What does the Death Penalty have to do with Texas Football?

If Texas gets an early lead on Oklahoma, don't look for it to be a close game. I expect the University of Texas to keep the offense going and all but blow out Oklahoma. In no way am I saying Oklahoma is a bad team, they're very good.

Instead, what I am saying is if Texas scores early they will likely score often and finish off the Sooners.

With a loss at the hands of Texas, Oklahoma's legitimacy going forward will be in doubt and their identity for the season will be literally put to death.

Tomorrow, when you see Texas State Police providing security at the game on television or live, think of the irony of this article and the image on the screen. I'm looking forward to the one day a year I, as a usual opposing fan to the University of Texas, may actually be seen in burnt orange.

Prediction: Texas 41, Oklahoma 24

Dallas Stars Take Out Nashville Predators 6-0 in Big-D

Leaders lead and followers follow. It's a pretty basic concept that the Stars needed to be reminded of coming into Wednesday's game against the Nashville Predators. Until this point the Stars had played well, but not well enough to gain the win in regulation.

Tonight that was not the case.

The Stars came out strong and put solid shots on Dan Ellis from the get go, so strong in fact that after three shots the Stars had a 3-0 lead. These first three goals were recorded by a couple of struggling Stars to this point. Brenden Morrow tallied the first, and less than a minute later Brad Richards scored. About three minutes later Loui Eriksson notched his second of the season.

Why is this so important in a game that had three more goals for Dallas?

Morrow, the heart and soul of the franchise hasn't seemed the same since his season-ending knee injury last season and has been trying to get back to his old way. Tonight Morrow seemed to have a jump in his step and his timing on shots appeared to be back to normal. He looked more than back to 100 percent scoring his second goal of the night on a Dallas powerplay.

Brad Richards followed Morrow's example and netted a second goal. Richards to this point has been far from struggling, leading the Stars so far this season in assists and points.

Loui Eriksson, last season's Stars goal scoring leader had only scored one goal until his ripple of the mesh against the Predators. He was then able to record another goal in the second for his third. If Eriksson can get his goal-scoring touch back, he could likely lead the Stars in scoring again.

In regards to followers, the grinding center Toby Peterson recorded a tip-in goal in the third period. If the Stars top players can keep up their scoring its likely the struggling players and low scorers will follow suit on the score sheet. Regardless, its always good to see third and fourth liners score in games.

If the Stars can gain many games where players score multiple goals the word unstoppable comes to mind if, and only if, the defensive side stays strong.

On the other side of the center ice line the Stars played great. The goose egg on the board was in large part due to playing what any coach would regard as good defensive hockey.

Stars forwards had a solid forecheck, and suffocated Predators players when they had the puck. The Stars defensemen played great, keeping great positioning and protecting Turco in net.

When the Stars went on the penalty kill, the NHL's worst stepped up to the challenge and made it difficult for Nashville to move the puck let alone score.

Finally, goaltending, and man was Turco solid in net. He seemed sharp and focused and the team in front of him made his job as easy as possible. This was important especially when it appears clear this could be Turco's final season to prove himself with Alex Auld waiting on the bench to take his place.

The Stars played a great game, and look to continue their point-gaining streak active against the Boston Bruins on Friday at 7:30pm central at the American Airlines Center. Many will remember last year's Bruins-Stars match turning into a boxing free-for-all. Things could be entertaining this year.

Dallas Stars Look to End Shootout-Loss Streak Against Nashville Predators

As the young season continues after their Western Canadian road trip, the Stars find themselves in an interesting spot, a limbo where the team may either be in a good position, or bad. For those at a loss as to what I am referring, it is the team's record. While Dallas is only one of two teams without a regulation loss thus far the Stars have dropped three games in the shootout.

Some fans are concerned the team is headed for doom. Others, who believe the team is just trying to find its mojo, have no real answers for what the struggle is about. I have some answers, and can tell you where to find the rest.

One fact is the Stars aren't getting it done in overtime. Five minutes isn't a long time, but with all the offensive weapons the Stars have, if things start clicking the Stars should be able to dominate the offensive zone in the extra period.

The Stars lack of regulation losses is a good thing. Thus far, the Stars have only truly played one bad period all season, the second period against Vancouver. The Stars found themselves out-played and out-motivated by the Canucks, something that must change going forward.

To the fans concerned and sweating buckets over the record, I urge you not to worry. A coronary isn't worth it this early in the season. Hold the trips to the emergency room until January when the injuries pile up.

For now take solace in the fact the Stars are well in the division points race of the Pacific Division. Once the wins start rolling in the team will be in a pretty position to take over the Division.

At this point the Stars are still finding themselves, so any points they can get are better than none. Currently, we don't have solid answers on what to expect from this team. If asked whether they are good or bad merely say, "meh, they're earning points."

Against the Predators, the Stars must show the home fans they are capable of winning in 60 minutes. The key against Nashville is the penalty kill, something which thus far has left a bad taste in many Stars' mouths.

"Our penalty kill has been really disappointing," said captain Brenden Morrow to Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News. "What are we, 50 percent this year? It’s pretty miserable."

"Pretty miserable" are my thoughts exactly. For the Stars to be a force in big games, special teams are key. Unfortunately while the penalty kill makes one want to stab their eyes out with scissors, the powerplay isn't much better.

The game against Nashville will boil down to who is better on the special teams side. Nashville is a talented team with solid goaltending and not the soft team of the past. With threats like Jason Arnott in front of the Dallas net, the Stars could make one mistake and lose the game easily.

Ken's Key's to the game:

1. Minimize the penalty kill time, if a team hemorrhages goals with a man short, it follows logically not to take stupid penalties until you address those issues.

2. Steve Ott was injured after pulling an oblique muscle in the Vancouver game and will likely not play until after he is reevaluated later this week. Someone (Brian Sutherby) must step up and play with the reckless abandon Stars fans love from Steve Ott.

Heck, Dallas loves Steve Ott so much October Fest is now "Ott-tober Fest." Regardless of the Stars bad marketing ploys, Steve Ott's inability to be on the ice will make it harder for this team to win.

Dallas will face the Nashville Predators on Wednesday at 7:30pm central at the American Airlines Center. The game can be viewed in the Texas area on Fox Sports Southwest and heard on 1310 The Ticket in Dallas.

Ken's Players to Watch: Dallas Stars vs. Vancouver Canucks

The Dallas Stars' last showing against the Calgary Flames was an eye-opening game to the true talent and potential of this club.

Taking into consideration the injuries already taken on by the Stars' Jere Lehtinen and Mike Modano, the gaps in the depth were filled very well.

Tonight's game in Vancouver serves as another look into what this team is made of heading into the end of their Western Canada road trip.

The Vancouver Canucks have struggled out of the gate and can gain some much-needed momentum in the Northwest Division.

A win tonight may be the best chance for the Canucks to begin their journey at knocking off the highly talented Calgary Flames; otherwise the Flames could run away with the Division.

Additionally, with news breaking of Daniel Sedin's foot injury, which will likely keep him out 4-6 weeks, the Canucks will look to score early and get Dallas on its heels.

Furthermore, with the Sedins having played much of their career together, this will be a rare look at only seeing one on the ice.

Dallas Players to Watch

Marty Turco: It will be interesting to see how the longtime Stars netminder plays after a break against the Flames. Turco has been solid so far this season but nothing spectacular. Look for Turco to prove himself as the No. 1 goalie in Dallas with a great performance tonight.

Tom Wandell: Filling in for the injured Mike Modano isn't an easy job. Wandell has stepped up to the challenge and played a hard-nosed game in Calgary, recording a goal against the Flames.

Loui Eriksson: So far the Stars top scorer from last season has been rather quiet with only one goal in three games. Look for Eriksson to try to break out of the drought tonight.

James Neal: The sophomore winger is a force to be reckoned with on the ice, and has 3 goals and 1 assist for 4 points to show for it. Look for Neal to fly with lightning speed around the net.

Jamie Benn: The Stars rookie winger has played solid hockey in the first three games, but has yet to record a goal. Look for Benn to net his first.

Vancouver Players to Watch

Henrik Sedin: With the loss of brother Daniel to a foot injury, look for Henrik to sink or swim on his own. Look for Henrik to show Dallas he's capable of scoring without brother-dearest.

Roberto Luongo: The ever-talented goaltender will look to steal a victory from a very talented offense tonight. Luongo and the Canucks need the win to start an upward climb in the standings.

Willie Mitchell: The 'Nucks top defenseman will need to play like it tonight. With Dallas forwards like Neal, Benn and Brad Richards on the attack, one small mistake could spell doom for Vancouver.

Ryan Kesler: Four points in four games is a great start for Kesler, if anyone can pick up the scoring lost by Daniel Sedin it's Kesler.

The Dallas Stars face the Vancouver Canucks tonight at GM place in Vancouver at 9 p.m. Central, 7 p.m. Pacific.

Ken's Corner: Thoughts and Perspective After the Stars Doused the Flames

On Friday night the Dallas Stars recorded their first win by handing the Calgary Flames their first loss. The Flames are still (out of the gate) one of the best teams in the West and will likely stay a top team, so what does the win tell us about the '09-'10 Stars?

First off, Friday night's game was one of the most complete games the Stars have put together in over a year. They played like a team fighting for a championship, not a team trying to reclaim its identity.

It shows us the team is moving in the right direction. I may be jumping the gun, but with the evidence presented I, and other fans, have no reason to worry.

Secondly, we got a glimpse of Alex Auld, good Lord was he amazing in net! The goaltending woes of the Stars appear to be over thanks to the addition of Auld from Ottawa during the summer. It's been said Auld will likely see three of every 10 games for Dallas this season, enabling Marty Turco to rest and focus more on his preparation.

Third, the Stars head into Vancouver happy and relaxed after recording a win in Calgary. Unlike Calgary, Vancouver won't be tired, so the game will likely be a bit tougher. However, with the lessons learned in Alberta, this team is capable of knocking off a talented team like the Canucks.

Another point to make regarding the travel westward is that some fans believe Auld will again be in the net for the Vancouver game. This will not happen. Crawford will play Turco because that's what all the media guys with the team are feeding me. Additionally, Marty Turco is still the number one goalie, and will be treated as such by the staff.

Fourth, Dallas' defense was near flawless, aside from the puck deflection off a defenseman's skate that led to the first Calgary goal in front of Auld. The defense played well on both sides, providing support to the offense while protecting Auld. They looked focused and showed a lot of chemistry, which is impressive considering the number of youth and new players on the back end.

Finally, after naming a point for each Dallas goal, I have the most important note of all.

If Dallas plays each night like they did against Calgary, a playoff berth is a sure thing, and a Stanley Cup wouldn't be far off. However bear in mind, for Dallas to be that championship caliber team, they have to play the exact same way in Vancouver.

One game at a time, we'll see what this team truly is. Here's hoping they're not being deceiving.

The NHL's Transformers: The 2009-2010 Dallas Stars

Something significant happened during last night's overtime loss in Edmonton. It was neither the ringing of the post in back to back games by James Neal, nor the significant playing time handed to Tom Wandell.

It was that for the first time, no member of the 1999 Stanley Cup winning team was represented on the ice or bench.

Although many Stars fans may cite this change as a bad thing, it isn't. If anything, I take pride that this Stars team has an identity without long time Stars superstar, Mike Modano. Do I love Mike? Hell yeah! However, to be realistic, if this team is going to get back to the Stanley Cup, it must adopt a new image and not try to fit the mold set in 1999.

The transformation began a couple years ago. However, last year's disappointment made clear how far the team needs to go and how difficult the process will be. Now, finally, the Stars have an abundance of young talent.

The Dallas Stars of the glory days were hardened veterans. They had grown up (in minor league play) elsewhere and were either signed or traded in.

In today's NHL, gaining talent that way can be like looking for a golden goose. Furthermore, as the Stars found out, even if you sign a stellar name to a solid deal it can still blow up in your face. So where does this leave a team looking to build a champion?

First, many Stars fans have to order straight Jack Daniel’s or pop pills to cope with the realism of last year. It was likely one of the most disappointing years to Lone Star State hockey fans since the move from the frozen north of Minnesota.

While it was a terrible year don’t get caught up in referring to it as “bad". Last year had a bad record, but only good things will come from it. Already the team has been retrofitted with staff who bring in a new concept. GM Joe Nieuwendyk and new coach, Marc Crawford, have given the Stars a new identity off the ice, but for their concepts to work, the on-ice product must change as well.

Returning to a previous point, no '99 Stars on the ice last night is a sign of the team moving in the right direction. Recognizable names on the roster now include Loui Eriksson, James Neal, Matt Niskanen, Niklas Grossman and rookie Jamie Benn. Guess where they came from... not trades, but minor league development.

While most of these Stars knew Iowa as their AHL home, the new group of young talent still learning life in the pros will thrive in the heart of Texas, only 3 hours from downtown Dallas.

This commitment to young talent and depth is a sign of good things to come, and helps give fans in both Austin/Cedar Park and Dallas a chance to see the beginning and finished product on the ice.

Not only have the Stars lost the personnel of the 1999 team, but also the concepts. That being said, if the world didn’t embrace new ways of thinking we’d still believe the world was flat and the booming hockey market of Texas would be refused a team due to climate.

So next time Jere Lehtinen and Mike Modano sit out of a game, don’t frown at the loss of beloved, long-time Stars, and don’t pout when those legends eventually leave the team for retirement or the front office.

Instead, smile at the progress of the team, the transformation of a successful franchise to a new, equally successful program, and know that your children may come to know Loui Eriksson or James Neal in the way you regard Mike Modano and Jere Lehtinen.

Maybe that’s why the game-opening video at American Airlines Center this season features a clip of the song from Transformers. The question is, who will show himself this season as our Optimus Prime?

Stars Vs Stars: Dallas Beats New AHL Affiliate Texas 5-1

The most exciting things about this time of year are new beginnings, the start of a new school year, new hockey season, and countless others. For me, it is the beginning of a new column covering the Texas and Dallas Stars at hockey54.com. For the Dallas Stars, it is the start of their new season and new AHL affiliate in Austin, Texas the Texas Stars.

To conclude their preseason schedule, the Dallas Stars took a three hour bus ride to the Lone Star capital city to take on the brand new Texas Stars at the new Ceder Park Center (Ceder Park is a suburb of Austin). In front of a crowd of 6,323 screaming Stars fans the squads battled for bragging rights on Wednesday night in the labeled “Bud Light Battle of the Stars”. To keep things fair the two teams switched up goaltenders, and the NHL Stars sent their AHL counterparts back-up goaltender Alex Auld who was the starter for Texas, while Marty Turco started for Dallas.

Dallas’ Toby Peterson started the scoring off putting a rebound past Auld at 7:56 of the first period. Assists came from Mike Ribeiro and Mark Fistric. The Stars took advantage of their first power play opportunity when second-year talent James Neal tipped a goal in at 16:29 of the period. Brad Richards and Mike Modano recorded the assists.

While the first period was all Dallas on the scoreboard, both teams battled hard and Texas was determined not to let Dallas run away with the game.

In the early minutes of the second period, Mike Ribeiro made the score 3-0 Dallas with Jeff Woywitka, a new addition in the offseason, recording an assist. Texas finally drew blood on a deflection by Perttu Lindgren. The puck found its way past Brent Krahn who replaced Turco in the Dallas net in the second period. The Texas assists were recorded by Sergei Korostin and Colton Sceviour.

Dallas added to their score making the final 5-1 with goals from Fabian Brunnstrom and a second goal from James Neal. Dallas finished the game outshooting their minor league counterparts 36-23.

"I was pleased to see us play as well as we did against the Texas Stars," said Crawford in the Dallas Stars game recap on their website. "I thought our guys, for the most part, did a good job of maintaining the things we need to have. It was good matchup, it had good intensity, good speed and I thought for the most part we didn't cheat."

For those readers anticipating what the Dallas Stars might look like entering their first game against Nashville, the forward lines according the Dallas Stars website were:

Benn, Ribeiro, Morrow

Eriksson, Richards, Neal

Ott, Modano, Peterson,

Brunnstrom, Wandell, Sutherby

The Texas Stars first regular season game is Friday night in San Antonio against the Rampage, while Dallas will host the visiting Nashville Predators for their season opener on Saturday at American Airlines Center.

So Long, Sergei: Long-time Dallas Star Zubov Leaves NHL For KHL

As reported by TSN and the Dallas Morning News, long time Dallas Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov has signed with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. Zubov only played in 10 games last season with the Stars, due to a severe hip injury.

After 12 season's with Dallas the Russian born blueliner reportedly is returning home for a two-year deal. The Stars worked all summer to iron out a deal, which clearly couldn't develop.

Zubov's agent had also been in contact with other teams, but lets be honest: a 10-game season, major hip injury and being 39-years old is a hard sell to any team. Including your employer of the last 12 years.

"Zubie is the most skilled, talented, patient, poised guy I've ever played with, and that includes forwards," former Stars defenseman Craig Ludwig said to the Dallas Morning News. "I hope he goes over there and does great."

Zubov is the Stars all time scoring leader for defenseman with 549 points in 839 games. He will be remembered by Stars fans for his quick pass and shot, calm demeanor and his ability to shut down the best of forwards.

Zubov won the Stanley Cup twice, once in 1994 with the New York Rangers, who drafted Zubov in 1990 at 85th overall; and with the Dallas Stars in 1999.

Its a sad day to see a Stars legend leaving, many knew Zubov was done in Dallas but I had held out hope he would take a front office or coaching job with the team. Especially since the assistant coach handling the defense is available. Would anyone have handled that job better for the Stars than Zubov? I think not.

Texas Longhorn Football: A Baylor Fan's Coming To Grips

Like most high school boys in Texas, I played high school football and took part in an even bigger Texas tradition by going to a high school with a mascot that contained the colors of the University of Texas.

Transferring in from a 3A state championship program in Missouri to the W.T. White Longhorns losing, not to mention a joke of a football program at 5A in Dallas, I guess you could say it took a toll on me. The constant burnt orange and white and "hook em horn's" chants made me desire anything in a college choice and college fan-ship, besides the Longhorns of Austin.

While in high school, I avoided cheering for a college team, especially since I had yet to make a college decision. Upon my acceptance to Baylor, my college sports team had been chosen.

As a die-hard Baylor fan while transferring out to another school, it has become time to decide if Baylor alone can service my sports needs. Of course I love the green and gold and will always support them, but something is missing.

I need a team with an identity and a focus with a winning tradition in a sport that matters.

During a recent visit to Austin, I was taken back to my time as a Longhorn in high school. I remember how cool it first felt to wear the colors of the University of Texas as a football player and it occurred to me, Baylor and Texas relations are never strained.

We both agree on hatred of Texas A&M, and there has always been a mutual respect for the flagship school of Texas and the original University in the Lone Star State (Baylor). Maybe this being a double fan could work and not be a problem. Texas is good, and Baylor is getting good. Waco is a dump in most respects, while Austin is an amazing and fun city.

Both schools have an amazing campus and atmosphere, and finally the "birth right" of me to be a Longhorn fan occurs. Let me preface this memory with saying I generally despise crazy, die-hard Texas fans who have no tie or degree tied to the school.

Most rationalize living in Texas is enough and those people annoy me, especially when they get decked out and act like morons. There should be a level of fan-hood for UT grads and students to be above the common folk, and sometimes the common folk forget that.

For myself, I'm in the common folk breed, except I was lucky enough for a chance to experience something many UT students never get to or choose not to enjoy. The Cotton Bowl Red River Shootout.

In high school, as part of a school program, we volunteered at the game, which to me meant seeing college football. I remember the half orange, half maroon crowd, the sounds, the smell of alcohol and the sound of the UT cannon.

My placement was in the heart of UT students, who upon seeing my amazement at such a sight more than explained how I had to hate the Sooners, I just had too.

As one guy cleaned up spilled beer upon a fellow fan, the UT student closest to me taught me chants and everything, and explained that being a Longhorn in high school was a lucky thing.

He explained few Texans, if ever, were real longhorns and I was, if only in high school, a Longhorn. Being a Longhorn in high school is better than never, and that gives me some fan superiority over my no ties to the school common Horn's fan.

So come fall, as long as Baylor and UT aren't playing that weekend, I'll hold my Horns high; I'll say the proverbial "hook em." And then turn around when Baylor plays and hold up my Bear Claw proudly. If a house can be divided, so can a heart.

Ken Armer is a Senior Writer at Bleacher Report and a Community Leader for both the NHL and Dallas Stars. He is also a former student of Baylor University currently looking for a new school to finish his Bachelors. (Likely the University of North Texas) He can be reached at karmer@bleacherreport.com.

Dodgers Trade Deadline Thoughts: Time to Play It Cool

With the trade deadline fast approaching for Major League Baseball, the NL West-leading Dodgers have some questions to answer.

Can we get better player-wise?

Do we feel like we can win in the playoffs with this team?

The Dodgers, of course, can always get better. And even in the middle of a losing skid, the Dodgers should feel more than capable of winning in the playoffs.

Is there a missing piece the team needs? Possibly. But with a current seven-game lead in the NL West and one of the best records in baseball, the Dodgers are sitting pretty player-wise heading into the weekend.

Last season, the Dodgers landed Manny Ramirez in a three-team trade at the deadline, and, without a doubt, it has changed the face of the team.

The Dodgers' image, mentality and scoring changed as soon as Manny slipped on No. 99.

A big-game player aquired at the deadline can breathe new life into a team; but the Dodgers don't need new life this season.

While losing has become an issue as of late, it is strictly because of team performance, not because of a chemistry or lack of talent problem. The Dodgers have been one of the best teams in Major League Baseball all season, and while I feel they should sit quietly at the deadline, they will still stay atop the West.

As the old saying goes: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," and the Dodgers are nothing close to being broken. They have their issues that need to be worked out before the playoffs, but nothing that can't be fixed from the inside.

This weekend, expect the Dodgers to play it cool and let other teams scrap away over new talent. The Dodgers have been a team to beat all season, and they will continue to be just that with the talent they already have.

Pacific Division Summer Report: Ducks, Kings Get New Looks For the Fall

The Pacific Division has seen some good action, during this offseason's proceedings.

All teams seem poised to take the rosters they have, as of today, into the opening of the preseason games; taking into account any surprises in training camp.

Without a doubt the most improved team and one of the most changed is the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks added Saku Koivu, who captained the Montreal Canadiens last season. Koivu will get to play with long time friend and fellow FinnTeemu Selanne.

The Ducks also reacquired Joffrey Lupul from Philadelphia, along with Luca Sbisa in exchange for Chris Pronger. Pronger was in his contract year and was the odd man out with a deep Ducks blue-line.

The Ducks added Nick Boynton to a one-year contract, as well as Steve McCarthy. Both are experienced blue-liners that help make one of the best defensive teams even better.

The Ducks were a dangerous team in last years playoffs, and look improved in many aspects.

They freed up a lot of money in ditching bully Pronger and added some great talent in Sbisa, Lupul and Koivu. Losing Broad Street bully Pronger to Philadelphia will likely look like a good offseason move as the Ducks will not only fight in the playoffs, but maybe for a Stanley Cup this season.

The Los Angeles Kings are a new looking team as well.

With veteran forward Ryan Smyth added in exchange for defenseman Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing, the Kings are more dangerous up front.

The other big name addition for the Kings is Rob Scuderi, who won the 2009 Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This addition at defense, adds veteran talent and a Stanley Cup ring, making the Kings a more dangerous team in the coming season.

Additionally, the Kings added prospect talent and resigned several young AHL-level players. A solid managerial decision for a team looking to improve consistently over the next couple of years.

The Kings got better at the cost of losing youthful defense. The Kings' new additions in most respects won't matter, but at least they tried. Until the Kings solve the gaping wound that is defense all the scoring talent in the world wont help. One addition of the talented Scuderi wont make much difference in the big picture.

With so much hockey news regarding the Phoenix Coyotes, they remained quiet in the offseason. The Coyotes' biggest additions are veteran Adrian Aucoin and goaltender Jason Labarbera.

The Coyotes also added veteran defenseman James Vandermeer, forward Stefan Meyer, and Vernon Fiddler. To be honest, from a team looking to make the playoffs and struggling to remain in Phoenix, the offseason doesn't look like an improvement, but rather an attempt to stay status quo.

The Coyotes should have money and cap room available to go after more players, in order to improve and fight for a playoff spot—and maybe even fan support—the team needs more talent than it currently has.

Youth is good for long term, but the Coyotes are on life support and need an infusion of young talent and veterans with big names, and stat sheets. Alex Tanguay or a veteran scoring defenseman would certainly shake things up in the desert.

The Dallas Stars look much the same as last year, and seem poised to not add any major pieces having learned a harsh lesson from Sean Avery last season. The Stars answered their goaltending woes trading for Alex Auld, a veteran netminder who can take some of the load off of Marty Turco.

With such young on defense, the Stars added veterans Karlis Skrastins and Jeff Woywitka. On the blueline the Stars seem committed not to resign veteran defenseman and long time Dallas Star, Sergei Zubov. Up front, the Stars added Warren Peters, who will likely occupy the third line for the Stars.

The Stars may look to add another veteran forward or defenseman, but the major dictator is money. Another question left unanswered is the approach new GM Joe Nieuwendyk and new coach Marc Crawford plan to take in building a winner in the Lone Star State. As a Stars fan, and as the usual subject of my work, the Stars offseason is a disappointment...aside from the adding of Alex Auld as a backup goaltender.

The Pacific Champion San Jose Sharks did little to improve, or get worse in the Northern California surfing months. The largest contract action was resigning veteran All-Star defenseman Rob Blake for one more year and adding veteran forward Scott Nichol. For a team struggling to shake bad playoff voodoo, the Sharks also could have done more and are bound by cap.

The Sharks take my "award" for laziest team in the offseason. Money is tight, but shaking up this team seems more than likely what will need to be done for a Cup to be raised in Northern California.

Ken's Rants: Balsillie and NHL Need To Remember Fans on Both Sides

I have to admit when I am more interested in the soap opera that is "as the Coyote turns" rather than the eternal crying of Sidney Crosby and his Penguins facing the dreaded Detroit Red Wings you know I'm sorta bored of hockey this season.

Lets be honest though, that situation is likely more important than the Stanley Cup. The ownerships, league, and franchise's failure in Phoenix has a lot more to do with just a name, city, and jersey change.

Is Balsillie wrong in wanting his team? No.

Or his vocal willingness to move the Canada? No.

Then the question becomes is Gary Bettman and the NHL wrong for wanting to keep the team in Phoenix wrong? No again.

I am in no way a lawyer, or corporate guru but I do know a little here and there. Even if Gary Bettman is somehow the good guy in this battle (doubtful) and Balsillie is the evil man hell bent on ruining the NHL in the United States (even more doubtful) then there are a few facts to consider.

The NHL first and foremost should consider revenue. The NHL can pump life into the Coyotes for another 50 years and never likely make it worth the amount spent.

Additionally, a new team in Canada, regardless of location, would make the NHL look kinder to our friends in the frozen north while getting a nice check to cash from fans in Canada.

Sadly the loser here regardless is the fans in Phoenix. I know a handfull who love their 'Yotes hockey, but even I feel its a failed endevor.

Would I love to see a Cup in the desert? You bet your ice skates I would, but I am not holding my breath for it.

Latest news shows that the NHL will likely be able to charge a relocation fee to Mr. Balsillie, and knowing in the NHL they will all but attempt to force out the potential buyer. In a legal sense this is 100% allowable, from a business perspective though it plain sucks.

Although the NHL should have a say in its 30 franchises, it should not be capable of dictating to the degree that it does who may, or may not own a team.

Whats a solution? Let Balsillie, without the relocation fee have his team, but the NHL and the court should force Mr. Balsillie to have a town hall meeting with every fan willing to show up to Jobing.com Arena to voice their concerns.

If he wants, he turn it into a real business oriented deal and try to sell tickets and whatever else he can to turn Phoenix residents into Coyotes and hockey fans.

He should also be forced to keep the team there for the 2009-2010 season. If the fans come through and show a renewed support for the team the team stays.

If not, he can have any city he wants as a new home. Then he alone will have to face the fans with his decision, not a board of governors and a commissioner who wouldn't know fan support if it hit them in the groin.

While owners fork out the cash and pay the bills, and the NHL handles the backround work the true owners of not only the NHL but the teams as well are the fans themselves. Even a failed team like the Coyotes deserve a voice since one is being given to most of Canada in support of Balsillie's effort.

Regardless, the fans both win and lose in this battle. The longer the fans on both sides are ignored for glamorized headlines on the legal proceedings the more clear it becomes that regardless of owners, team locations, or money, the bottom line is the fans are ignored unless it has to do with revenue.

Maybe it is time the fans remind everyone in the front offices who really holds the pen for the NHL's pocket book?

Patience Is A Virtue: Why Ray Emery and The Flyers Don't Mix

“We have internal discussions about many players and their potential availability, including Ray Emery. I have spoken to his agent a few times about Ray as well. Any further speculation about this would be very premature.”

That's an odd statement from Paul Holmgren since most of the NHL has figured out it is all but a done deal with the Flyers and Emery. Regardless I digress on this point.

Has Paul Holmgrem forgotten the Sean Avery like behavior of Ray Emery? If anything Emery is even more of a distraction than his Vogue editing compadre'. I should know from fan experience the damage Sean Avery can do to an organization. I was warned by Rangers fans, and I didn't listen. Flyers fan's, please tune your eyes.

Am I a Flyers expert? No. Am I an Emery expert? No. But even basic human logic pinpoints the target of Emery so early on the Flyers offseason as a poor choice. Yes, the Flyers are in a major mess due to cap issues and free agent goaltenders, that is without a doubt.

The Flyers should not jump the gun on Emery, and instead proceed with caution. If he is so cheap the Flyers can afford him then clearly their should be concerns. Additionally, goaltenders last free agent season were not a hot selling point, with patience the Flyers could get a real bargain without having to dump much cap wise.

Am I saying I have the answers? Far from it, this is a heck of a mess I don't envy Holmgren for being in. But patience would be a good concept for the Flyers organization.

For now the Flyers don't have to find an answer to their goaltending woes. The offseason in most respects hasn't even officially started so the jump on the Emery band-wagon confuses me after his past behavior.

The likely-hood of losing Martin Biron is almost a for sure deal, but a healthy Nittymaki on paper would make a top-notch starter. The Flyers have a lot of top notch players outside of the crease that could be shopped.

Joffrey Lupul makes a lot of money that he may or may not be worth, depending on who you ask. One or two smart moves could land Nittymaki, or even Biron back in Philly. Ending any true issues in the crease, the most important of positions for a Stanley Cup.

If it ain't broke, don't fix a goaltending situation long before the issue must be truly addressed only causes more problems down the road. Jumping the gun could hurt the Flyers for the short and long term much like Avery and the Dallas Stars.

Some will point out I am forgetting the talent Emery has. True, but why take the chance on a man basically run out of the NHL for his attitude? I feel confident I could get an Ottawa Senators fan to back me up on the anti-Emery argument.

Benjamin Franklin once said "He that can have patience can have what he will." Paul Holmgren should take this to heart.

He's Back: Joe Nieuwendyk Replaces Hull, Jackson As GM for Dallas Stars

Few things surprise me these days. Whether it is my following the latest political news or trying to avoid constant chatter about the Detroit Red Wings one thing more than most nearly made me spit out my coffee.

I initially had to choke down a gulp at reading about the government takeover of General Motors (If only I could talk politics here!) but even more so than our slow move to government run industry was the return of Dallas Star legend Joe Nieuwendyk to the organization, instead of leading the team to a championship from the ice he will instead do it from the front office as General Manager.

Although the entrance of Nieuwendyk means the end of the two-GM system, the question at hand must be is this really what is best for the club, or just a publicity stunt to appease angered Stars fans?

Although Tom Hicks addressed the issue of this being Nieuwendyk's first real taste at being a general manager (he was special assistant to Brian Burke and Cliff Fletcher in Toronto this past season) my concern doesn't lie with inexperience, but instead with his relationships within the team.

Of course, my worries may seem a bit overboard, but none the less they are serious and major for the organization to consider.

My initial concern as a fan is the players who remain from the Joe Nieuwendyk playing days. Mike Modano, first off, will return and should be returning. Even at his age he hasn't lost much of his talent. Joe will likely look to Mike to be a valuable go-between for GM-player relations.

Jere Lehtinen is one player Nieuwendyk must consider letting go, or keeping that he once called a teammate. Back in the late '90s, Lehtinen was a top level winger, and a Selke candidate. As sad as it is, hopefully Joe will see the likely liability Lehtinen is too hold on to. When he is healthy he is a gift, when he is injured the team suffers.

Sergei Zubov was a top-level defenseman when Joe wore the green star. Last season Zubov barely even saw action due to injuries. Sadly he and Lehtinen's fate may be one and the same.

Question is, will Joe be a harsh judge and make the tough choice that is likely better for the team? Or keep old friends around hoping for the best when likely the better days are behind players such as Zubov and Lehtinen.

The pieces are on the table for Nieuwendyk to put together a dangerous team. A few smart choices in the off season and a good player or two signed in free agency could easily see the Stars back in the Western Conference Finals.

Although I seem to nit-pick the new GM, I am truly happy. Although Les Jackson and Brett Hull are two favorite Stars front office guys for me, the clash of personality in the Co-GM job seemed to destroy the team.

Welcome back to Big-D Joe, we're glad to have you!

Down the Hatch: Favorite NHL Players as Alcoholic Drinks

Hockey and alcohol have always been a great mix; while baseball sluggers come under scrutiny for steroids, hockey players usually have a reputation as drunks.

While other sports spray their trophy with alcohol, hockey players drink champagne or another drink of choice out of the Stanley Cup. For those who play in adult league hockey, you either enjoy an alcoholic beverage from time to time as a team, or come completely hammered and play in what will forever be lovingly called Busch league.

Why fight our heritage? Let’s embrace it! Ever wondered what drink your favorite hockey players would be if allowed to ferment? So have I.

Brenden Morrow

Captain & Coke (Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Coca-Cola)—a pretty-boy face, much like this drinks smooth taste, but watch out or you will end up on your rear wondering why your head hurts. Both live up to the name of Captain.

Sidney Crosby

Hairy Virgin (rum, orange liqueur, and apple juice)—Look at a picture of this guy's attempt at a playoff beard, and you will know what I mean.

Johan Franzen

Moscow Mule (vodka, ginger beer, and lime, served in a copper mug)—I realize “the mule” isn’t Russian, but what other alcoholic drink could bear such a name? One of my favorite all-time performers deserves to make my alcohol list.

Jason Arnott

Lynchburg Lemonade (Jack Daniel's, orange liqueur, sour mix, and lemon-lime soda, served over ice with a lemon wedge or maraschino cherry garnish)—Arnott, like this drink, is best served over ice and packs quite the punch. No one could better represent the great state of Tennessee and Jack Daniel’s than Jason Arnott of the Nashville Predators.

Detroit Red Wings team

Crimson Death (Absinthe strained through sugar with cranberry juice over ice)—The team leaves you questioning how many games you’ve played in the series. The drink leaves you wondering how many drinks you’ve downed. Either way, you’re gonna lose this battle.

Mike Modano

Single Barrel Jack Daniel’s—Both are 100 percent American and classy as all get out. One should be kept in your locker room for as long as possible and the other kept in your liquor cabinet as long as possible. Both get better with age and are worth every penny.

Andy McDonald

Caribou Lou (Bacardi 151, Malibu Rum, and pineapple juice)—The drink originated in Kansas City, but Andy McDonald is all St. Louis. Wherever Andy Mac or Caribou Lou venture, only good times roll. The only thing Blue in Missouri after a playoff appearance is the jerseys.

Todd Bertuzzi

Paralyzer (vodka, Kahlúa, cream or milk, and Coca-Cola)—to avoid any issues here, I wont explain this. Just let it sink in.
