(Early) Dallas Cowboys Offseason Review

Dallas Cuts DT Tank Johnson, WR Terrell Owens, S Roy Williams and CB Adam Jones.

And those are just the cuts. Dallas released Williams and Owens at the same time, announcing it on Thursday. The cut of Owens is now costing Dallas $9 million against the cap, which makes me wonder why there was no slight attempt to trade Owens.

After all, Dallas currently does NOT have a first-round pick in this year's draft and Owens, who is currently sitting at sixth place on all-time receptions and second place in touchdowns (only second to Jerry Rice) has to be worth something, right?

I have heard Owens get a lot of trash talk lately after this release which really makes me wonder... How can a very productive player (the best wide receiver Dallas has had since Michael Irvin) be a distraction to an entire team that doesn't play with heart? If a team doesn't play to win, shouldn't it be the entire team's fault?

Owens is far from even slowing down in his career, lighting up good numbers EVERY year with every team he has played on (something Randy Moss could never say) and it will be interesting who he plays for this coming season. Just hopefully they don't play Dallas so he wont light them up with four touchdowns like he did to Washington or 200+ yards like he did to San Fran.

Cowboys trade CB Anthony Henry to Detroit for QB Jon Kitna.

In Dallas' sole trade so far this year they have traded their second CB Henry to the Lions to obtain a back-up QB in Jon Kitna. This leaves a ton of weight on the shoulders of newcomers Orlando Scandrick and Mike Jenkins for next year if another proven CB is acquired. On the bright side, Dallas now has a back-up QB who can throw the ball more than three yards out.

Chris Canty signs with division rival NYG.

Although he was the LB who wasn't the most coveted, Canty did still makes plays from time to time. His numbers weren't amazing but he was still a piece to the good linebacker corps that Dallas has and now he will be adding to the good linebacker group that New York has.

After all of this, the Cowboys have lost big names and big productive players. They have gained one QB who's team went 0-16, a back-up QB. Things they need are WR, S, CB, OL... All of those positions can wait because they really needed that back-up QB.

^Sarcasm on that last sentence.

NFL Offseason Moves, Part Two

Now just picture T.J. Houshmandzadeh in a Seahawks jersey. Feels weird don't it?

Well get used to it, because this former Bengal just signed a $40 million contract with Seattle. The Seahawks have just gained a huge weapon at the WR position, and the Bengals have lost a player that they didn't know how to use.

The Bengals will be OK though, they still have Chad Johnson, who will more than likely have another dull season.

Ward leaves the Big Apple for the Bay...and no not the Green Bay!

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have taken RB Derrick Ward, former New York Giant, and signed him to a four-year $17 million contract.

The former back-up to RB Brandon Jacobs, who rushed for only 67 more yards than Ward, has stated that Tampa Bay was his "first choice". It would be a real dumb move to not have Ward starting over fellow RB's Earnest Graham and Cadillac Williams, who spend more time nursing injuries than nursing the pigskin while running up the middle.

Matt Cassell is headed to Kansas City, but what's the big deal?

Now that the recent big news is out, I would like to pose this question: What is the big deal with QB Matt Cassell going to the Kansas City Chiefs?

In his first season—correct me if I'm wrong—did he break milestone records?

Did he spark the theory of a QB competition next year with Brady?

Did he even make the playoffs?

NO.

This is a guy who played a season with a team with a lot of talent around him, and he was mediocre at best. I didn't even get to the part where I talk about the Chiefs.

Or do I even need to?

Their only two wins were against Oakland and Denver—not exactly the cream of the NFL crop.

I will make an extremely early prediction in saying that Matt Cassell, and the amazing Chiefs, go .500 next season. Which is sadly, a big improvement.

That Time of Year Again: NFL Offseason Moves

Well it is that time of the year. Players get tagged, traded, released, and teams scramble to rebuild themselves to bring home "The Precious." Let us look and see what big news has transpired early in this period of NFL offseason.

Cowboys Trade Henry

Just now the Dallas Cowboys have traded CB Anthony Henry to the Detroit Lions for QB Jon Kitna. Henry was the second CB on the Dallas squad behind Terrence Newman and was looking to be playing safety for Dallas in the next few years. On the other hand Kitna surprisingly still has a job, but if we look at the bright side of things, Dallas now has a back up quarterback that can throw the ball further than three yards out.

Skins Spend Cash on Haynesworth

The Washington Redskins shelled out big money to DT Albert Haynesworth, formerly a Tennessee Titan. The seven year pro signed a seven-year, $100 million contract to play for the Redskins. This includes an NFL record $41 million in guaranteed money. Fortunately for the Titans they were able to resign Kerry Collins to a two-year, $15 million contract.

Dawkins Flies Away From Philly

Safety Brian Dawkins has now gone from Philly to Denver where he has signed a five-year deal. Tight end Kellen Winslow is now in Tampa Bay, who traded draft picks for the TE to Cleveland.

And that is just half of it, still big names have yet to relocate like WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who has stated he would like to be an Eagle this coming season. We shall see what big moves come next.
