A Bad Day for the Ravens and AFC North

The division that looked like the best in the NFL flunked out today in their games. The Bengals, Browns, Ravens, and Steelers all fell in extraordinary fashion, all of them last minute or OT losses. While the Ravens lost to the 10-0 Colts, the rest of the division lost to sub .500 teams.

The Bengals were stunned by the new starter Bruce Gradowski and the Raiders, on a last minute turnover and the subsequent field goal. The final score was 20-17. Carson Palmer and the Bengals won the game in every way statistically but the final score.

The Browns were outscored 38-37 by the Lions, led by Matthew Stafford's five touchdowns. He threw for an astonishing 422 yards, including a 75 yard strike to Calvin Johnson and a touchdown to Brandon Pettigrew with no time left.

The Browns scored 37 points in their best game since...2007? Brady Quinn threw for four touchdowns and 300 yards, but they fell short in crunch time. Maligned coach Eric Mangini also called a questionable timeout at the end, giving time for Stafford to come back in the game

The Steelers were shocked 27-24 in OT against the Chiefs, who came out of nowhere to tie the game up. The Steelers dominated the stat sheet, but gave up crucial plays at the wrong times.

The Steelers gave up a 60 yard catch and run that was only intended for 10 yards at most, showing how important Troy Polamalu's presence is, and how he missed while he is out.

Worse news was a head injury to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. He has told teammates he is fine and will play against Batlimore, but it is not his decision. He may actually not be ready, and even if he is, his fate may be sealed.

A new policy issued by the NFL states that concussed players must consult a neurologist independent from the Steelers organization.

Another part of the policy is that a player must be symptom free for seven days. It's Monday, and his status isn't even clear yet. Second stringer Charlie Batch was also injured and he will be sidelined for about a month.

The Ravens fell 17-15 to Indianapolis and Peyton "The Sheriff" Manning. And yes, I called him that before John Gruden got a gig on MNF. Great minds think alike.

All points aside, the defense of the Ravens managed to buckle down and prevent the most electrifying pass offense from scoring more than one touchdown through the air. The run defense was able to limit one touchdown for Joseph Addai, who has been inconsistent recently, but has had his days.

For the secondary and the defense that had gathered so much criticism before the bye week, it has been great to see them step up.

They have been stopping the run, stopping the pass, limiting the end zone to a privileged few, and have been forcing turnovers. They have only given up 41 points in four games and shutout an opponent for the first time since 2006.

The problem has been scoring, not total offense. The Ravens can move the ball down field at will, but can't score at all, nor can they move the ball in the redzone. The Colts limited the Ravens to five field goals, and forced two crucial turnovers to win the game.

The Ravens have gone from hot offense and average defense to good defense and average offense. The tables have turned, and the Ravens aren't looking too good that way. They may be 2-2 after the bye and 3-3 before, but the offense has scored very few points since the win against Denver.

Balance is the best way to win, and the Ravens have struggled with balance all year, and have to correct it down the stretch if they want to play in the postseason.

Baltimore Still Feeling Optimistic, Even After Three Heartbreaking Losses

The Ravens stand 3-3 going into their bye week. Obviously this isn't the ideal start the Ravens had hoped for. But you learn from mistakes, and you can't learn if you don't make mistakes. Obviously there are plenty of plays many players would like to take back, but they can't.

The only thing that they can do now is learn. It's something no one wants to do, because they don't want to lose, but you can't be a good team without struggling. The Ravens started 3-3 last year, with nearly the identical team of this year, but decimated with injuries, and finished 11-5.

Will the Ravens get criticized over this week and next? Yes. Will they get put down? Yes. Do they really care what others think? No. They never have, nor will they ever. There are plenty of reasons for optimism. First of all, they could be the Tennessee Titans, and second, they lost by a margin of 11 points in all three games combined, all because of careless mistakes.

Statistically they are still a very good team, record wise they are average, but play-wise, they are still elite. I'm not saying people should be drinking the Super Bowl contender Kool-Aid, but there is no good reason to be overly worried. The only real reason to worry is the teams that Baltimore plays next. They come off their bye week to face Denver.

Denver is a great team, as they are 5-0 for a reason, but they are not as complete a team as the Vikings. They have a suffocating defense, but lack the explosiveness on offense that Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson, and the Vikings have. They are ranked eighth on offense, but they do not create the big plays that the Ravens have given up so much.

The Ravens torched the Vikings secondary, with Flacco throwing for 353 yards and two touchdowns, most coming in one quarter. He would have broken 400 had Derrick Mason dropped a perfect pass that would have gone for a touchdown .

The receivers, once heavily criticized, have allowed Joe Flacco to amass 1674 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Derrick Mason leads the team with 381 yards and three touchdowns. Wideouts Mark Clayton and Kelley Washington have 270 and 267 yards respectively.

Ray Rice is becoming one of the most dynamic backs in the league. Against Minnesota, Rice caught for 117 yards and became the first running back to catch for over 100 yards in franchise history. He also busted runs of 22 and 33 yards, both for touchdowns against a stout run defense.

The offense is not suspect, it is, dare I say it, the suspect in the Ravens 3-3 record. Specifically the pass defense. They allowed Brett Favre to throw for 263 yards and three touchdowns. The Ravens need to make something happen soon, or they are going to get themselves into trouble.

The Denver Broncos are a solid pass offense, but they aren't an elite passing team. Kyle Orton has passed for 1236 yards and seven touchdowns. The most important stat is that he has only one interception. Kyle Orton doesn't take risks.

Had this been last years defense, this game wouldn't have been close. The defense would have been dominant, but this isn't last years defense. Despite the ominous stats, the Ravens aren't worried. They have two weeks to address their problems. Whether it is getting new players or changing staff, it needs to be done.

How to fix the defense? I don't know, the problem is obviously the secondary, who's pitiful deep play defense cost the Ravens the game, and almost cost them the Chargers game. The easiest solution is to get larger cover corners, and keep Foxworth or Washington as nickel or dime back.

Ray Rice isn't too worried about the season, neither is the team itself. Every team struggles at one point, and they recognize that.

“It is frustrating,” Ray Rice said. “But at the same time, 3-3 going into a bye week is not always the worst thing in the world. I think we were in the same position last year, if I am not mistaken. I don’t like to compare this year’s team to last year’s team. One thing we are doing is establishing our identity."

Establishing an identity. That's what the Ravens are trying to do, and to do that, they need to topple a top program like Denver.

Joe Flacco, Ravens Receivers Need To Step Up

Joe Flacco failed to throw the ball down field in Sunday’s 17-14 heartbreaker against Cincinnati, that is why they lost.

In order to beat the Vikings, Flacco and the receiver corps needs to bring their A-game. Statistically, the Ravens are a better offense, including rushing offense, but that is because Adrian Peterson rushes the ball alone, while McGahee and Rice split time rushing.

Rushing the ball against the Vikings is no easy task, neither is against the Ravens, unless your Cedric Benson. The Vikings defensive line is a 4-3 line, which includes Pro-Bowlers Pat and Kevin Williams, All-Pro DE Jared Allen, and Ray Edwards. The four are also accomplished pass rushers, with Allen posting 6.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and a defensive touchdown. Kevin Williams has 2.0 sacks, and Edwards had 1.5.

However, the Ravens offensive line held off the Bengals pass rushers, especially Antwaan Odom. The challenge for the line is providing enough push for Ray Rice and Willis McGahee to get through a 4-3 defense, something they had trouble doing against Cincinnati, the first 4-3 defense they faced.

The Ravens receivers are going to have to pick up their game. If rushing the ball fails to produce any results, then they need to be there so Flacco can throw the ball downfield. Check down passes won’t work, they didn’t work last week.

If possible, the running backs should block against the Vikings veteran pass rushers.

Speaking of which, the Ravens receivers need to get open fast enough, so Jared Allen and Ray Edwards can’t sack Flacco before he throw the ball. And most importantly, Flacco needs to target them. The Ravens receivers saw very little passes their way, and only had a combined three receptions.

The Ravens are statistically better than the Vikings at passing in every aspect except interceptions, but that is because Flacco has thrown the ball more than Brett Favre. Flacco has thrown for more yards, and matches Favre in touchdowns with nine.

The real advantage Flacco has is that he can spread the ball to all his receivers. All five of Flacco’s top-five targets have 200-plus yards.

Derrick Mason leads the team with 284 yards and two touchdowns, Kelley Washington is next in line with 219 yards and one touchdown. The best stat about Washington is that 87 percent of his passes result in first downs. Mark Clayton and Todd Heap both have 213 yards, but Heap has two touchdowns to Clayton’s one.

Ray Rice leads all running backs in the league with 208 yards and one touchdown, a 48 yard catch in run that found a place in SportCenter’s Top Ten Plays of Week Five.

The Vikings have six interceptions this season, but three of those are from linebackers, Chad Greenway with two. If Flacco avoids errant throws down the middle and in the flats, the linebackers shouldn’t get their hands on the ball.

However, the Vikings are a QB sacking, fumble forcing machine. The offensive line of the Ravens should be able to limit the number of times Flacco is sacked, especially with the return of Jared Gaither. However, they may have their hands full trying to limit the amount of pressure the defensive line and linebackers can put on Flacco.

A balanced offense might have to wait until week eight. The Ravens might need to air it out this week. The Vikings are a run stopping defense and a QB killing defense, but they are not a pass-stopping defense.

Baltimore Ravens Lose Due to Checkdown Obsession, Not Flags

Say what you want about the refs, but the Bengals beat the Ravens without them. Sure, there were some hysterically ridiculous calls, and some good calls, but the Ravens couldn't get anything going on offense.

How could the leagues third-ranked offense in yards and scoring not get any kind of rhythm? Because the check down pass ruled the day, and it ultimately lead to the Raven's demise.

The Ravens leading reciever was Ray Rice, who had 74 yards off of 7 catches, but the majority of those were quick check down passes for short yardage. Until the 48 yard touchdown, Rice only had 26 yards.

Next in line was Todd Heap. He had 7 catches for 46 yards and a pedestrian 5.9 yard average. Why? Because he was Flacco's safety blanket. Truly, there is nothing wrong with that, but you can't check down the ball every play.

You can't win a game if you don't throw down field. The Ravens receivers were thrown to
less than 10 times, and had a combined five catches. Whenever Mark Clayton or Kelley Washington would catch a football, it would result in a first down. So why not throw down field?

I'm not talking about bombing the ball 50 yards, I'm talking about throwing it 15 to 20 yards, not five or six yards. You have to take risks, you get intercepted every so often, but that's part of the game.

No risk no reward. Simple as that.

Other notes

Chad Ochocinco may have caught for 94 yards, but he didn't walk the walk. He failed to score a touchdown and do the "Ricky Bobby." He got stripped by Ed Reed, and Domonique "Vivica Fox" Foxworth recovered it. In the fourth quarter he got his bell rung by Ray Lewis. Unfortunately, the hit drew a 15 yard penalty and a first down.

Cedric Benson rushed for 120 yards, breaking the century mark against the Ravens, the first person in 39 games to do so. The last person to that was Larry Johnson, who ran for all of 30 yards today, with a 1.8 average. Times have changed.

Today's loss was the first time in franchise history that the Ravens have lost when they get two turnovers or more. They were 47-0, now 47-1.

Ed Reed made his first real appearance this season. Picking off an errant Carson Palmer pass 54 yards for his 8th interception TD. Shame he wasn't covering Andre Caldwell, who is turning out to be as clutch as Carson Palmer.

The Bengals take the first place in the AFC North for the first time since 2005. The AFC North is becoming the most exciting division in the league. Scratch that, it already is the most exciting.

The last time the Bengals started 4-1 they finished 11-5. The last time the Ravens started 3-2 they finished 13-3. The last time the Steelers started 3-2 they won the Super Bowl.

Ravens-Patriots: Week Four Matchup Could Set Tone For Remainder of 2009

As I sit here, fasting on a rainy Yom Kippur afternoon, waiting until night to eat for the first time in 24 hours, I can't keep my mind off Week Four's Game of the Week.

Next Sunday, the 3-0 Baltimore Ravens travel north to face the 2-1 New England Patriots. Had it not been for a dumb decision by Buffalo's special teams and Tom Brady being Tom Brady in Week One, the Patriots would be 1-2 for the first time in recent memory.

Speaking of dumb decisions and Tom Brady, let's recall the Patriots most recent encounter with the Ravens.

In 2007, on Monday Night Football, the Ravens nearly beat the Patriots. After a fourth down defensive stand, it looked like the Patriots' perfect record of 16-0 would have to be 15-1. But defensive coordinator Rex Ryan had called a timeout before the play, and the down was played again.

Tom Brady, of course, mustered up his magic and led the Patriots down field for the win.

Now, Rex Ryan has gotten even with the Patriots after his Jets beat them in Week Two, but the Ravens haven't. They now get their chance.

Despite being labeled an underdog with a 3-0 record, and No. 1 slot in various Power Rankings, the Ravens present the Pats with a great test.

But now, we are asking ourselves a question we have never thought we'd ask ourselves: Can the Patriots' defense handle the Ravens offense?

Also, can the Ravens' defense handle Tom Brady?

Say what you want about his performance so far, but Brady is still Brady. He may not be as great as before, but he's better than mostly everyone. He's still a top-10 QB.

The only reason why I haven't mentioned the running game of the Patriots, is because they are playing the Baltimore Ravens.

The Ravens have the No. 1 ranked rush defense in the league, as they have yet to allow a 100 yard rusher in 37 games, and that trend will continue.

The only runner who looks like he can break the streak is Adrian Peterson, and he may not even be able to do it.

The pass defense of the Ravens has been pretty porous so far, as they didn't really show up until they played the lowly Browns offense. But forcing four turnovers and no touchdowns is still impressive, no matter who you face.

Unfortunately, the Ravens face Randy Moss and Wes Welker in Week Four, two of the best receivers in the NFL.

Fortunately, neither of them are 6-foot-6, the average height of the San Diego Charger's receivers. (If you recall, the Ravens cornerbacks got mauled by Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd, and Antonio Gates, all of them abnormally large.)

Randy Moss can catch just about anything that comes his way, whether he is using one hand or two.

But Wes Welker can be just as effective as a difference maker. Luckily for the Pats' opponents, he has missed his team's last two games. Jon Gruden put it perfectly on MNF in Week One when he said Welker "built his house on the quick screen pass."

But the Ravens boast the league's fastest cornerbacks in Domonique Foxworth and Fabian Washington. Although small, their speed makes up for their size, (except when they are facing super sized receivers like the Chargers'). Dawan Landry and Ed Reed lurk deeper in the secondary, having recorded two and one interceptions, respectively.

A little like the Ravens' defense, the Patriots' 'D' has taken a step back.

Adalius Thomas has yet to find the success he had in Baltimore, Tedy Bruschi and Rodney Harrison have retired, and Jerod Mayo is injured.

Meanwhile, the front seven of the Ravens remains loaded with Trevor Pryce, Haloti Ngata, Kelly Gregg, Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis, Jarrett Johnson and Tavares Goodden.

So can the Patriots defense handle the new found offense of the Ravens?

Joe Flacco has doubters and skeptics eating their words, throwing for 839 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. He also has a 101.4 passer rating, compared to Tom Brady's 79.9 rating.

Brady has only been sacked once though, and the offensive line provided enough punch to allow Fred Taylor to run all over the Falcons in Week Three. Flacco has eaten dirt only three times, and the offensive line is anchored by Jared Gaither, the biggest man in the league, four time Pro Bowler Matt Birk, and rookie Michael Oher, who ran a 5.3 40 yard-dash time at the combine.

Running the ball for the Ravens are Willis McGahee and Ray Rice, who both have nearly identical stats except in the touchdown column. McGahee leads the league in rushing touchdowns and Ray Rice found the end-zone for the first time in his career last Sunday.

I'd also like to give a shout-out to Keyshawn Johnson, who gave Derrick Mason, Kelley Washington, Mark Clayton and Todd Heap, motivation to make him look like a fool.

The ESPN analyst called out the Baltimore pass-catchers and, in response, Mason leads the team in receptions with 12 catches for 196 yards, followed by Washington, with 12 receptions for 167 yards.

Both have receiving touchdowns along with Mark Clayton and Willis McGahee. Todd Heap leads the team with two touchdowns caught.

But stats don't amount to much other than moral victories. The real victories tend to go to the team with the most heart. That is something that can't be predicted, and something that we'll have to wait to see next Sunday.

Both these teams are top five in the league, and are going to bring the heat against each other in a matchup that will find itself on highlight reels across the nation.

Oh Graham Harrell: Where Art Thou When Needed?

Does anyone remember Graham Harrell? The former quarterback for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, had an illustrious career as a three year starter for the Red Raiders. He won the Sammy Baugh Award in 2007, and an All-American in 2008 and won the Johny Unitas Golden Arm award that same year as well.

Where is he now? The Canadian Football League. Quarterbacks such as Matt Stafford, Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman, Pat White, Drew Willy, Curtis Painter, Stephen Hodge, Mike Teel, Tom Brandstater, Nate Davis, Stephen McGee were all taken. Graham Harrell, went undrafted.

Now there are coaches in the NFL who are kicking themselves because they passed on Harrell, and if they aren't, they should be. Some teams have found themselves in a pickle, with no solid starting quarterback. While Graham Harrell dominates the CFL, these four NFL teams continue to lose.

Cleveland Browns

I know it's a little early, but Brady Quinn isn't getting the job done. Derek Anderson was proven to be a one-year-wonder, and I doubt he is going to get another shot. Quinn has only throw one touchdown and two interceptions. He has just over a 50 percent completion percentage and has a dismal 66.9 passer rating.

Imagine Harrell throwing the ball two Braylon Edwards. With the running game non-existent, they need to score through the air, and they obviously can't with Brady Quinn under center.

St Louis Rams

Marc Bulger is done, he may have not have seriously screwed up this year so far, but he will. Behind Bulger is Kyle Boller, the former incumbent starter for the Baltimore Ravens. The Rams are ranked 31st in passing yards per game, and total yards per game. Hell, if it weren't for Steven Jackson, this team might have gone 0-16 last year, and maybe this year.

The Rams right now have an extremely green and raw receiving corps. If they get some time they could be a good group. They need to do the same with Harrell, give him a few years while the O-line and receivers improv, and then let him off the leash.

Washington Redskins

I have faith in Jason Campbell, I believe he is a good quarterback that can become great. Unfortunately, the Redskins don't think the same. The Jason Campbell Job Security Meter: is reading CRITICAL. The Jim Zorn meter is even higher, and when Zorn gets canned, Campbell with likely join him

Who do they turn to after Campbell? Colt Brennan, Brennan was arguably the better quarterback in college, but in the NFL, Brennan hasn't lived up to expectations. He hasn't performed like the stud he was in college, in all the preseason games he's played he has been disappointing. Harrell may not have played in the NFL yet, but I'd bet that Harrell would be better suited to play than Brennan.

Oakland Raiders

Sorry Raider Nation, but your faith in JaMarcus Russell is misplaced. As of now, Russell and Jake Delhomme are in contention for worst starting quarterback in the league. I don't know where to begin, he showed up for training camp overweight, and has yet show that he even takes his job seriously.

He has a cannon for an arm, I'll give him that. Unfortunately, his accuracy is worse than a a blindfolded chimpanzee with a shotgun. He doesn't miss throws by just inches, he overthrows wide open receivers by yards. On the season so far he inexcusable 35 percent completion percentage and horrifying 46.6 passer rating.

If I were Al Davis or Tom Cable, I'd be scrambling to find a quarterback that can get the ball to his young receivers, who have shown a lot of potential. Once they can get an offense to complement their defense, they might start winning some more games.

--------

Hopefully, Graham Harrell will be getting some phone calls soon, or this offseason. I was shocked to see him go undrafted in the 2009 Draft. If these teams were smart, they'd be the ones to be calling Harrell, I hate to see such talent go unnoticed.

Around the League in 60 Seconds

Week two is already over and I feel like Austin Powers when he lost his mojo. But when it comes to football, this week did not disappoint. Upsets, injuries, and drama found their way into the NFL this week.

It seems like Rex Ryan and Kerry Rhodes can back up their talk, and Bart Scott isn't just a system player.

Matt Stafford needs a new offensive line before he will throw more touchdowns than interceptions. One touchdown and five interceptions isn't going to get the 0-2 Lions anywhere, but I guess one win is an improvement.

Daunte Culpepper still has a year or two left: Take advantage of it. In this economy, you need to get your money's worth.

Chad Ochocinco did the Lambeau leap, only to find profanity, insults, and a bunch of middle fingers in the stands. But the scoreboard did all the talking.

The Redskins got booed off of their field after a win. I'm surprised they didn't get booed off at all last year. But really? Who wouldn't boo after a touchdown-less performance against St. Louis?

No one could stop Chris Johnson against the Texans. Unfortunately, nobody could stop Matt Schaub either. Maybe all the hype about Houston is true, except their run defense.

The Dolphins' Wildcat turned out to be more than a one-year fad, but it couldn't stop Peyton Manning from being...well...Peyton Manning.

JaMarcus Russell's horrid 7-24 performance against the Chiefs couldn't possibly have been as bad as Norv Turner's play calling. A third down field goal and a fourth down HB draw against the Ravens doesn't bode well with the fans.

Speaking of Turner, maybe he was trying to find a way to ruin Phillip Rivers' career day?

Face It, Ravens are For Real

The Ravens have always been disliked, disrespected, and underdogs since their inception in 1996.

Now, they aren't disrespected as openly as the Oakland Raiders, but the Ravens are always put down. Whether it is being predicted to lose every week, or being labeled as a bunch of "thugs" and "criminals", the disrespect is there.

Despite being the fifth most winning team of the decade (83-61), 7-4 in five playoff berths, one Super Bowl win, and two conference championship appearances, the Ravens have never been a top-ranked team, or even considered a legitimate Super Bowl contender, or a division title contender.

The Ravens are hoping this season they can overcome that.

Last year it wasn't until they stunned the top-seeded Titans in the divisional round of the playoffs until they were even considered in the Lombardi race.

But almost every year, with few exceptions, the Ravens prove all naysayers wrong.

Traditionally it's always been the defense that makes the Ravens known, they haven't been ranked less than sixth in total defense in the decade, and haven't allowed a 100 yard rusher in 36 games, the most in the NFL currently.

The defense was second ranked last year, and free safety Ed Reed led the league in interceptions, and was the only unanimous selection to All-Pro team.

The Ravens didn't get credit for their elite defense last year, and other years before.

Defensively, they are second in rushing yards allowed (82), and first in average per play (2.2). They have two interceptions, five sacks and three forced fumbles.

Pass defense has been looking very poor, but should improve as the secondary adapts to the new 4-3 scheme, with less linebackers in coverage.

But the story so far is the offense, putting up the second most points in the league with 69. Joe Flacco has thrown for 483 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions.

All in two games

The Ravens rank third in the league in rushing with 382 yards, and lead the league in rushing touchdowns.

Ray Rice leads the team with 144 yards and a 5.3 average, McGahee is second with 128 yards with a 4.9 average and three touchdowns.

Why am I stating all these relatively meaningless numbers?

Because the Ravens are for real, whether you want to admit it or not. They are just as good as any big name, big market team that has been hyped up to be a Super Bowl contender.

Flacco is the real deal, not a fluke. Ray Lewis isn't aging. No receivers? No problem.

Who's the real bum now Keyshawn?

By the way. Ray Rice is as good as any other starter, and Le'Ron McClain is the best fullback in the league.

Willis McGahee will win Comeback Player of the Year this season. I'm not kidding, you heard it here first.

The irony?

The Ravens probably won't get ranked higher than fifth in the majority of rankings and polls.

Willis McGahee Is Coming Back

Willis McGahee and Todd Heap had very disappointing performances last year. Both of them are former Pro-Bowlers, but couldn't even manage to put up decent numbers, nor could they stay healthy.

But of the two, McGahee had an even more disappointing season. After a 1200 yard Pro-Bowl season, he barely mustered half of that yardage.

McGahee ran the ball 170 times for 641 yards, a career low, but managed to score seven touchdowns. He peaked late season, and scored a touchdown of a 77 yard run, his longest of his career.

Beside that one highlight, he had a dismal year, especially considering he went to the Pro-Bowl in 2007, just a few months earlier.

Following a scary neck injury in the AFC Championship, McGahee lost the starting job for the Ravens during the offseason to Ray Rice. Fortunately for McGahee, All-Pro Le'Ron McClain was moved to his natural position at fullback.

McGahee and Rice will be splitting carries this year, with McClain serving as a blocker and a receiver. While McClain did see some carries and scored a goal-line touchdown, he will not see as much running action as last year

The dual running back attack took form at Sunday's home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. While all the talk is about Joe Flacco, McGahee was silently making a comeback.

While starter Ray Rice rushed for 108 yards, he didn't score any touchdowns. McGahee did though, in fact he had two, a rushing touchdown and a receiving one. He rushed for a total of 44 yards and scored on a fourth and goal to seal the game away.

McGahee also caught four passes for 31 yards and a touchdown. Showing versatility as a receiver really helps his look, stats, and performance. While he may not be posting Comeback Player of the Year numbers, he is certainty in contention for the award.

McGahee is most likely going to be the number two running back on the roster, but that won't stop him from coming back and sticking it to all his critics last year.

Derek Anderson's Fall From Grace

Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini has decided on a starting quarterback, but he isn't telling anyone outside the organization who it is.

His rationale? He believes it will prevent opponents from being adequately prepared to face the Browns come opening day.

"It's more difficult to prepare for two, than it is to prepare for one," he said.

Seriously Eric? Are you seriously pretending that we don't know who you have chosen? We all knew who was going to be the starter from day one. Do you really think that Derek Anderson is going to get a second chance? That the Browns fans were going to allow that?

Brady Quinn will be starting come opening day, regardless of whether or not you tell us.

Derek Anderson's fall from grace has been highly documented. Between being crucified by fans or labeled a "one-year-wonder" by the media, Anderson has been pushed aside for Quinn.

It all started at the Pro-Bowl. After a 10-6 season, the Brown's best since they re-joined the NFL, Anderson threw 29 touchdowns and 19 interceptions and was voted to the Pro-Bowl.

In Hawaii, the 2008 season was foreshadowed in his performance at the game. He threw an interception and was sacked twice. True, it was only an exhibition game, but is was just the hint of things to come.

In the 2008 season, this trend followed. He was injury-plagued all season, threw nine touchdowns, and eight interceptions. While he threw more TDs than INTs, he had a completion percentage of 50.2, had a 66.2 passer rating, and fumbled the ball nine times, with two losses, both career highs.

While statistically it may not be that bad, part of it has to do with the team's lack of success as soon as he was injured. The Browns started 0-3, but hung on and managed to scrape a 4-6 record entering Week 11's matchup vs. the Houston Texans.

That would be Anderson's last game of the season, and maybe his last as a Cleveland Brown.

After he went down, the team didn't win another game. Going 0-6 in the last six games of the season. They only scored 31 points over that stretch and were shut out two times.

Can Derek Anderson really be blamed for his team's shortcomings? No. But it is safe to say that had Anderson not been injured, they would have at least won one more game (Cincinnati).

Unfortunately, critics never look at circumstances or the fine print. All they see is a 4-12 team with a laughingstock for an offense that—once again—returned to its usual spot: The cold, dark cellar of the AFC North.

Waived Baltimore Ravens That Will Find Work Elsewhere

With the deadline for the final 53 man rosters passed us now, the teams have finalized the rosters that will most likely be the roster that you will see in your program opening day.

Defensive tackle Nadir Abdallah; fullback Jason Cook; running back Cedric Peerman; wideouts Justin Harper, Yamon Figurs, Jayson Foster, Ernie Wheelwright and Eron Riley; safety K.J. Gerard; kicker Graham Gano; center Robby Felix; linebacker Tony Fein; tight ends Davon Drew and Isaac Smolko; cornerback Evan Oglesby; offensive tackles Joe Reitz, Stefan Rodgers and Tre' Stallings; guard Bryan Mattison; and linebacker William Van DeSteeg were all waived.

This isn't the end of the road for all of the ex-Ravens on the cut list. In fact, it may just be the beginning for some. Their services may and probably will be needed by another team.

Evan Oglesby, CB

I would be shocked if Oglesby isn't on another teams roster by the beginning of the season. He may not be the best cornerback on the Ravens, but he saw action in all 16 games last year.

Teams with poor secondaries should put him high on their lists. He has played around some of the best players in the league, two future Hall of Famers. He brings experience to the secondary, and the ability to cover the receiver well.

Possible Destinations- Kansas City, Detroit, Seattle, Tampa Bay, St Louis, Jacksonville, Buffalo

Jason Cook, FB

Cook release was not terribly surprising, but one would expect that the Ravens would want depth behind All-Pro Le'Ron McClain. Cook was going to back up the Pro-Bowler as he switched from half-back to his natural position of fullback.

Any team with a struggling running game or weak offensive line should have Cook on their radar. Cook is good at receiving and blocking especially. While he won't see many rushing carries, expect him to catch a few passes, and assist in protecting the quarterback

Possible Destinations- Arizona, Detroit, Kansas City, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay

Yamon Figurs, WR

Figurs release was not surprising, despite the lack of receiver depth. He had been replaced at returner by Lardarius Webb and Chris Carr, and could not perform consistently at wide receiver.

However, he could be a good pick-up as a kick returner and a receiver by any team lacking in either or both of those. He is young, and teams like St Louis with young receivers could benefit from his addition. He managed to grab a 43 yard touchdown last year, and a 51 yard catch in the preseason, showing that he can catch the deep bomb.

Even teams just looking for some depth should take a look at him, and see what he can offer in the event a starter gets hurt.

Possible Destinations- St Louis, Chicago, Oakland, San Fransisco, Carolina, Jacksonville, Miami

Cedric Peerman, RB

Peerman was a a rookie draft pick out of Virginia. He saw limited time in the preseason, but managed to score a touchdown against Washington. But that touchdown didn't amount to much.

He was plagued with inconsistency the entire preseason, and couldn't get anything going after his score. But on a team with Willis McGahee, Ray Rice, and Le'Ron McClain all carrying balls, did he really stand a chance? Not to mention fighting with Jalen Parmele and Matt Lawrence for the remaining two roster spots.

For a team looking to bolster their running game, Peerman is a must have. While he was inconsistent in the pros, he showed extreme explosivness in college. His skills could be refined toplay at the pro level.

Possible Destinations- Seattle, Arizona, Cincinnati, New England, Indianapolis

Preseason Week Three: AFC North Power Rankings

The AFC North has performed well so far during the preseason. That should make the Bengals, Browns, Ravens, and Steelers fans alike feel proud. The division right now is headed by the 3-0 Ravens, with the Browns and Steelers tied at 2-1, and the Bengals at the bottom with Thursday's loss, with a 1-2 record.

It's incredibly difficult to put the Browns above the Steelers, and some may argue that I am biased, but the performance of the Browns is better and more consistent.

1. Baltimore Ravens: 3-0

The first stringers of the Ravens have performed almost flawlessly. It all started against the Redskins. The Ravens dominated the Redskins in every facet of the game. While the talk was about the defense, and how they recovered from the losses of two starters and a coordinator, people didn't notice the offense.

The passing attack is like no other Ravens squad in history so far. Fifteen receivers caught for 408 yards against Washington. The rushing attack gained 129 yards in a really lopsided offensive effort. Against the Jets, Flacco threw for 108 yards with little mistakes but no touchdowns.

Against the Panthers, Flacco was at his best since last season, throwing for well over 200 yards and a touchdown. The receiving corps looked especially good during that game, with Derrick Mason catching for 70 yards, and newcomer Kelley Washington and running back Ray Rice catching for 67 yards.

Todd Heap caught for Joe Flacco's first preseason touchdown, a nine-yard strike.

The running game has been relatively solid; the only problem is the inconsistency of the runners. Some plays, the back breaks for a 16-yard gain, the next two plays they get stuffed in the backfield. Rookie Cedric Peerman, starter Ray Rice, and short-yardage back Willis McGahee have all at least once.

The defense has only allowed three touchdowns in three games, including one shut-out. The defense that led the league in takeaways hasn't slowed down despite offseason losses. The Ravens have compiled three interceptions, two of them returned for touchdowns. The new four-man front has produced four sacks.

2. Cleveland Browns: 2-1

How do I dare put the Cleveland Browns ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers? Well folks, the Browns have been playing great since their week one loss. While Pittsburgh performed extremely poorly in week two, and despite week three's shutout, they still have to play better to top the Browns' performance.

As of late, the quarterback competition has shown some life. In week one, Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson both threw an interception, but Anderson went 0-2, while Quinn went for 68 yards off of seven out of 11 passes.

Quinn couldn't get much going on in the second game, a 27-10 win over Detroit. Anderson threw for 130 yards, but also an interception.

The competition was a a draw until week three, where Quinn threw for a touchdown to Braylon Edwards. He went 11-15 and 128 yards. Derek Anderson didn't perform bad either, going 7-11 and 77 yards, but it's safe to say that Quinn has pulled away in the race.

At the receiving end, Braylon Edwards is actually catching balls for a change! He caught a touchdown pass, and two other passes for 51 yards, including an impressive over-the-shoulder catch in tight coverage. Edwards also caught a one-handed catch, but he was ruled out of bounds.

Outside of Edwards, Josh Cribbs and Brian Robeskie have been doing an adequate job replacing Donte Stallworth, and is emerging as a good No. 2 receiver. But what is even more impressive is Cribbs' kick and punt return skills. He returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown.

As with the rest of Cleveland's offense, they had to wait for week two for the running game to take shape. Jamal Lewis rushed the ball seven times for 23 yards and a touchdown against the Lions.

But rookie James Davis out-ran Lewis, rushing for 117 yards with a 9.7 average, as well as a touchdown. In week three, however, the running game gave way to the passing game.

The defense is doing a solid job for the most part. They gave up 17 points to the Titans and Packers, but held the Lions to one touchdown. The Browns have produced five fumbles, but only recovering one. They have gotten four interceptions and four sacks as well.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers: 2-1

The Steelers have been inconsistent, which is the only knock against them. They performed poorly and lost without Ben Roethlisberger, but they played great and won when he is on the field.

He completed four out of six of his passes in his first game, and in the second game threw for well over 100 yards. The ankle injury that sidelined him against the Redskins showed no serious effects.

Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch did a fine job filling in, but they didn't have the same presence on the field and that contributed to the Steelers' loss.

At the receiving end, Limas Sweed is starting to take shape as a No. 3 receiver, but is still showing inconsistency. Super-Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes is keeping up with the pace he set in the postseason last year. But the No. 1 receiver is still Hines Ward.

He is Roethlisberger's safety blanket and the most consistent producer on the offense. You can always count on him to make a play when needed.

The Steelers defense is the Steelers defense, simply put. They return all but one of their starters, and have added Evander "Ziggy" Hood, who is making an immediate impact with the second string. Lawrence Timmons is taking Larry Foote's position, and is doing so quite well.

The Steelers have produced five interceptions with one returned for a touchdown, and eight sacks (leading the AFC North).

4. Cincinnati Bengals: 1-2

I spent the entire offseason raving about how much the Bengals have improved, saying that they can go from four wins to seven or eight, and possibly defeating the Ravens or Steelers in one or both matchups.

I know it's only preseason, but it appears that I have been proven wrong for the second year straight, at least offensively. Carson Palmer's return to football was less than stellar, but not terrible; the only knock against him was his interception.

J.T. O'Sullivan, the second stringer, performed well in the first two games, throwing a touchdown in both, but couldn't find the end-zone in the third.

Jordan Palmer struggled in the first two games, throwing an interception in the first game and going 2-7, but was able to find the end zone despite throwing a pick. Carson Palmer missed the previous two games due to an ankle injury and will likely sit out next week so he doesn't agitate it before the season.

Chris Henry is emerging as a go-to receiver. The legally troubled receiver is finally starting to clean up his act, and it is starting to show. All three of the Bengals' passing touchdowns were to Henry. Henry caught for 100, 66, and 62 yards in the three preseason games, respectively.

Starters Lavernues Coles and Chad Ochocinco have both seen limited action, probably explaining the lack of success this preseason. Wide receiver Quan Cosby returned a punt 37 yards for a touchdown.

Rookie Bernard Scott is making strides at the running back position, and outperformed starter Cedric Benson, while getting less carries than Benson. However, neither of the two could find or fight their way into pay dirt (TD). Third stringer Brian Leonard did, with a one-yard run.

The Bengals defense has showed slight improvement, and were able to hold the stellar New England offense to two field goals. They have produced four sacks and four fumble recoveries.

-------------------

Well folks, that's a wrap for week three. Before you get bent out of shape over the rankings or what I said, keep in mind that it is only preseason, and that none of this matters, and that each team can make or break their rank in a single game once the season starts.

If you think I am being biased toward or against a specific team, please let me know so I don't make the same mistake twice.

Denver's Brandon Marshall Must Be Really Ticked Off Now

This just in. Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall, openly unhappy with the Denver Broncos, was suspended by the team Friday for unspecified "detrimental" conduct. The club did not say in its short statement how long the suspension would last.

During Wednesday's warmups, Marshall walked while the rest of the team ran. He punted a ball away instead of handing it to a ball boy and swatted a pass thrown to him. His actions were caught on video and broadcast by a local news station.

Marshall told ESPN on Thursday night he wasn't trying to force a trade through insubordination but that frustration got the best of him.

The receiver apparently was held out of practice Thursday as punishment for the selfish display, but head coach Josh McDaniels wouldn't discuss it after practice.

"I'm not going into it," the coach said. "If they're not ready or able, they're not out here."

Marshall's agent, Kennard McGuire, didn't immediately return a phone call Friday. McGuire was out of the country until Monday.

McDaniels said Marshall didn't play against the Seahawks because he wasn't prepared to take the field.

Marshall also missed the team's exhibition opener against San Francisco two weeks ago because he was on trial in Atlanta, where he was acquitted of a misdemeanor battery charge.

Prosecutors had accused him of beating his then-girlfriend.

Ravens D Reloaded for '09

Naysayers during the offseason questioned whether the Ravens defense could compete in '09 with the losses of Bart Scott, Jim Leonhard and Rex Ryan. But Jon Gruden had an answer for them on Monday Night Football.

"The Baltimore Ravens don't lose players, they just reload."

He was referring to the newcomers to the Ravens lineup.

Football fans know superstars like Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Haloti Ngata are some of the most dominant players at their positions. They also know that consistent players such as Jarrett Johnson, Kelly Gregg, Dawan Landry, Dominique Foxworth, Fabian Washington, and Trevor Pryce will perform well week in and week out

But they don't all know new players such as DE/LB Paul Kruger, LB Tavares Gooden, LB Jameel McClain, FS Haruki Nakamura, CB Lardarius Webb, and SS Tom Zbikowski.

Kruger, the second-round draft pick from Utah, made an immediate impact for the Ravens.

Against the Redskins, Kruger started in place of Suggs, recorded three tackles and a sack. Against the New York Jets, he started again and recorded five tackles and three pass deflections.

Gooden,a second year player out of Miami, has filled in for Scott and is doing quite well. Last year he played four games and recorded four tackles. He has taken the role as Lewis' understudy and possible replacement when Lewis retires.

Against the Washington Redskins, he had five tackles and against the Jets he had five more and a sack. That single sack was more than Scott's total in 2008.

McClain is a budding superstar. Personally, I think he should have taken Scott's place as the starter. Last year, McClain had two safeties, (one on a blocked punt, the other on a sack) tying the NFL record for a single season. He recorded two-and-a-half sacks last year as well.

Against the Skins he had eight tackles. Against the Jets, he had a career day, totaling 10 tackles and an interception returned 16 yards for a touchdown.

Nakamura is another star in the making. He recorded 12 tackles and a pass deflection last season. In the postseason he had one-and-a-half sacks, two pass deflections, and broke three of Ben Roethlisberger's ribs. In the '09 preseason, he has recorded three tackles and two pass deflections.

Webb is a rookie out of Nicholls State. He is becoming more of a kick returner than a cornerback, but has recorded three tackles and a pass deflection in two preseason games.

Zbikowski is another second-year safety who last year returned kicks and played on special teams. This year he has made an impact as a strong safety, recording one sack and two tackles against Washington and two tackles against the Jets.

All these players reinforce the Ravens' defense and they already look to be the best defense in the league, ahead of the Steelers, Vikings and any other top defense from last year.

As a matter of fact, the defense could be better than the Ravens' 2000 team, making them the best of all time.

A bold prediction, but the way their starters performed against the Redskins and Jets, it could very well be true.

Philadelphia Eagles without Donovan McNabb: Maybe in the Near Future?

It's hard to picture, the Eagles without Donovan McNabb. Since 1999 the Eagles have had him at the helm. Now it may be coming to an end. He may not have been the most consistent quarterback ever, but he always produced for his team, and his regular season and postseason record prove it. Not to mention five NFC Championship games

Now, let's look at the facts. The Eagles just acquired Michael Vick, which I think was a great move. It was win-win for everyone: Vick gets his rightful second chance at stardom, and the Eagles get one of the most talented athletes in the NFL as a backup QB.

Some will say that Andy Reid and the Eagles front office are playing McNabb as a fool behind his back, by telling him that he is a backup, when really planning to start him over McNabb. But that's not what I'm saying.

I'm saying that they wouldn't have picked up Vick if they didn't have any intention of replacing McNabb with Vick. However, bar any serious incidents, I don't expect that Vick will replace McNabb for another two or three years, but expect Vick to take over the reins sometime in the near future.

He isn't going to be just a regular old backup. You don't spend $1.6 million on a big time playmaker such as Vick, and have him sit on the bench for the entire season. And especially don't offer him $5.1 million the next year. It's nice to have a playmaker as a backup, but it is unnecessary.

Sure, McNabb misses a game or two every season, but for that you don't need someone like Vick. For that, someone like A.J Feeley, who keeps the chains moving, doesn't make mistakes, and can't step up when needed two.

Now that the Eagles have acquired Vick, they have a suitable replacement. The Kevin Kolb experiment ended with a disastrous performance against the Ravens in 2008, and A.J Feeley can't handle being a starting quarterback.

They also offered Vick $5.1 million next year, in his second year. Let's compare this to an "experiment" like Terrell Owens. Owens was only given one year to prove himself, while the Eagles front office shows clear intentions that this is no experiment.

All the signs point to McNabb being replaced by Michael Vick. However, don't expect this for another two or three years. McNabb has some gas left in the tank, and Vick needs more development, but don't be surprised when Vick is the new face of the Eagle's franchise.

Roethlisberger Rape Case: Affidavit Casts More Doubt on Shaky Case

In an already shaky case where Andrea McNulty, a cocktail waitress at a hotel in Lake Tahoe, Nev., accused and sued Ben Roethlisberger of raping her during a celebrity golf match last year, things just got worse for the accuser.

An affidavit (a sworn statement of fact) signed and released by Angela Antonetti, stated that McNulty bragged about having consensual sex with Roethlisberger.

The statement said that McNulty "did not appear to be upset, stressed-out or nervous" regarding Roethlisberger.

Instead, she said that she appeared "happy and boastful." However, later she said she thought she might be pregnant from the encounter, the affidavit said.

The lawsuit, filed on July 17, alleges multiple Harrah's Lake Tahoe managers took part in a cover-up.

It also said that she went into depression after the alleged attack, and spent several months in and out of hospitals, and she's seeking a minimum of $490,000 plus any damages.

Recently, the case against Roethlisberger has been crumbling, and it appears that it may just be an attempt to extort money from Roethlisberger. If this recent affidavit is treated as relevant by a judge, it is likely that the case will get thrown out court.

If it is thrown out, Roethlisberger would have a chance to file a lawsuit, for false accusations and libel.

Laid Back: Ravens' Training Camp Gets Visited by Hip Hop Legend, Snoop Dogg

Rapper and legend Snoop Dogg paid a visit to the Ravens' training camp this morning. He arrived with a large entourage, including someone to hold an umbrella over his head.

Snoop is a close friend of Ray Lewis and decided to show up today while in town for a performance this weekend. He says he came to visit Ray and see the defense in action.

“We’ve been good friends for a long time,” Lewis said. “We’re coming out here and trying to work together. He showed some DBs some foot drills. He’s got his little league team and all that, so I’ll introduce y’all to our new coach, Mr. Snoop Doggy Dogg.”

Snoop Dogg joined cornerbacks Frank Walker and Domonique Foxworth in some post practice ladder drills. Walker gave Snoop three different drills, and he could do all of them.

“I was just working on my footwork,” Snoop said. “I’ve got my Chuck Taylors on now, but I still know I can perform well. The DBs were trying to show me a few moves, but I had to show them a few moves.”

Incidentally, Snoop Dogg is a an avid Steelers' fan, but he says he has a lot of respect for the Ravens and the Ravens-Steelers rivalry.

"This is like a heavyweight boxing match every time I seem them play,” he said. “This was a chance for me to see them live and in high-definition. It’s real cool to be able to come out here, see them go to war, and battle against each other. When it comes to game time, you know why the preparation is so serious.”

He also had some words about star linebacker and close friend Ray Lewis.

“Ray is one of the greatest linebackers to ever play the game,” Snoop said. “I love his story, his enthusiasm for the game. It’s inspirational to see how this whole team turns the level up"

Head coach John Harbaugh also had something to say about Snoop Dogg coming to practice:

“From what I understand, he’s a coach. He coaches some little league football teams and everything,” said Harbaugh with a laugh. “He had some insight into our receiver situation [that] he wanted to share, and so we took a couple notes. Those guys are all football fans, so it’s fun having them out there."

San Francisco 49ers Should Call Crabtree's Bluff

Michael Crabtree should be a poker player. Why? Crabtree has entered the next stage of contract holdouts. He is now telling the San Fransisco 49ers that he is prepared to sit out the 2009 season, if they don't give him the contract he wants.

Folks, I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.

So now, what do the 'Niners do? Do they call Crabtree's bluff, and risk losing the top WR prospect? Or do they fold to Crabtree's demands and blow a lot of cash and cap space on an unproven rookie?

I say call his bluff. The reward is greater than the risk. If they call it correctly, Crabtree will accept the contract he has been offered. If they don't, he goes somewhere else, or just sits out, and watches the NFL on his couch pondering about the opportunity he blew

Receivers are expendable, money isn't. Why blow so much money on someone who hasn't done anything to show he is deserving of the payment he wants? If they do spend the money, they're potentially hurting themselves.

Let's say he flops, for whatever reason, whether it's his foot injury or poor play. Now what? They just spent all that money, and completely massacred their salary cap. For what, a broken and worthless receiver?

If he puts out, good job, you took a gamble and won. But if it doesn't, don't go around complaining, because you put yourself in that position.

We all know Mike Singletary is a no-nonsense coach. I predict Singletary will call his bluff. And if he isn't bluffing, they look elsewhere. There are other options for receivers. Marvin Harrison, Matt Jones, and the 49ers could trade with the Broncos for Brandon Marshall, or with the Cardinals for Anquan Boldin.

All the other options have proved themselves to be worth the price. Something Crabtree hasn't. Don't fold to his demands, not only will it hurt you in the end, but it will open the door for rookies across the league to blackmail their team.

Defensive Top Seven Part One: Top Seven Secondaries

Defense is separated into three parts: the line, line backers, and the secondary.

For those who don't know, the secondary consists of the defensive backs, cornerbacks, and safeties. The secondary is the heart of the team's pass defense, but sometimes can take the role of pass rushing and run defense.

The rankings will be based off the performance of the players last year, the improvements each secondary has made over the offseason, and the improvements each individual player has made.

No. 7: Denver Broncos

Nine out of 10 people never saw this coming. For years the Broncos' defense has been a laughing stock, and they've rolled over on their backs so opposing teams could walk all over them.

But times have changed.

While their line and linebackers remain horrendous as always, their secondary has taken great strides.

They are anchored by new, strong safety Brian Dawkins, who not only provides strong leadership to the Broncos' shattered locker room, but a dangerous threat in the secondary. He may be getting old, but he hasn't run out of fuel yet.

Cornerback Champ Bailey is getting old too, but still has gas in the tank. When healthy, he is a danger to anyone unfortunate enough to be covered by him. The No. 2 man is Andre Goodman, who is coming off a great year in Miami, where he racked up five interceptions.

Free safety is their weakest spot, as Renaldo Hill had a good three interceptions, but an unimpressive four pass deflections, the lowest for free safeties in 2008.

No. 6: Washington Redskins

While DeAngelo Hall may have been grossly overpaid, it is good to have him on the defense. He is a strong player, and an effective corner. He finished last year with five interceptions, a very good number considering the NFC leader had seven.

Carlos Rogers is the most underrated player in the secondary and on defense. While he only had two interceptions, he had 56 tackles, and 24 pass deflections, three more than Hall.

The key cog in this unit is free safety LaRon Landry. While his stats may not be as good as Hall's, he makes a bigger impact consistently—something Hall doesn't. Strong safety Chris Horton had two sacks and three interceptions, but lacked consistency.

No. 5: Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals had a mediocre defense in the regular season, allowing 40+ point games against the Jets, Patriots, and Eagles. However, they showed their might in the post season, especially in the secondary.

The Cardinals posted nine interceptions, with seven of them from defensive backs. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie led the secondary as a rookie. He even put up a 99 yard interception return for a touchdown, just nine yards short of the record set by Ed Reed that year.

Many, including me, believe he was robbed of Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Also at cornerback is Bryant McFadden, who came from Super Bowl Champion Steelers. McFadden was one of the most underrated corners in the league, and arguably the best corner on the Steelers loaded roster.

At free safety is Antrel Rolle, the younger brother of Ravens corner Samari Rolle. It seems skill runs in the family, as Rolle posted 89 tackles and an interception last season. He also had one postseason interception, which he returned for 47 yards.

The Cardinals also have one of the best strong safeties in the league in Adrian Wilson. Wilson may not have had the best numbers in 2008, two interceptions and two forced fumbles, but he is the most consistent member of the secondary in front of Dominique Rogers-Cromartie. At 29, he isn't exactly young, but he has his best years ahead of him.

No. 4: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers were the number one defense last year, and it turned out defense still wins championships. Their roster is absolutely loaded with talent and leadership, and it shows in their performance.

Free safety Ryan Clark is the most underrated player in the NFL, in my opinion. He is hard hitting and has hands better than what his stats suggest. He might just be the hardest hitter in the league, and if he isn't, he's definitely top-10.

Just ask Wes Welker and Willis McGahee, both extremely talented players who had the misfortune of being in his way, quite frankly. Some hits make the crowd cheer: Clark's make the crowd silent and shocked.

Ike Taylor is the No. 1 cornerback for Pittsburgh, and is one of the best cornerbacks the Steelers have had since Rod Woodson. He only had one interception, but he did have 65 tackles and 14 pass deflections.

What puts Pittsburgh so low is the departure of cornerback Bryant McFadden to the Cardinals.

Coincidence?

His departure will make a bigger impact than people suggest. Deshea Townsend will replace him, but he only played a limited amount of time, and despite putting up two picks, he only had 20 tackles.

Then there is Troy Polamalu, the best strong safety in the league. He can do it all—sack, tackle, pick, safeties. You name it, he can do it.

Polamalu is all over the place. One play he is pass rushing, the next he makes an interception.

Troy tied for second most interceptions last year with seven, behind Ed Reed.

No. 3: Baltimore Ravens

The departure of Jim Leonhard, the strong safety who went from a nobody to a star, makes people a little worried about the Ravens' secondary.

However, people fail to see who is starting next year—Dawan Landry, the older brother of Redksin safety LaRon Landry.

Landry had an astounding rookie season in 2006, and followed it up with a great 2007 campaign. His 2008 season was cut short when he went down with a neck injury, placing him on IR. Expect him to rebound greatly.

The two starting cornerbacks are Fabian Washington and Domonique Foxworth. What they lack in size, they make up for in speed. They may just be the two fastest cornerbacks in the league.

Last year, Washington had a great season, with a career-high 15 pass deflections and 34 tackles, all in 12 games. Foxworth, a Baltimore native, comes from the Atlanta Falcons. There, he posted 38 tackles, 15 pass deflections, and one interception.

Quite frankly, Ed Reed may be the greatest safety to ever play the game of football. No one knows how he does it. Last year, he had four games in which he had two picks, and he returned two for touchdowns over the course of the year.

He set the record for longest interception return for a touchdown with 107, breaking the record of 106 yards, previously set by Ed Reed.

He also had a sack and forced a fumble, which he returned for a 20-yard touchdown. He led the league in interceptions for the second time in his career (with 9) and interception yards(with 264).

He flexed his muscles again in the postseason, intercepting two passes, one of which he returned 64 yards for a touchdown.

A tip to all NFL quarterbacks—don't throw the ball anywhere near Ed Reed.

Just don't.

You'll regret it.

No. 2 Green Bay Packers

Sorry Nmandi Asmougha, Charles Woodson is the best cornerback in the league. He had an NFC-high seven interceptions, along with 50 tackles, 17 pass deflections, and three sacks. He may be 32, but he isn't showing any signs of slowing down.

In fact, he is in his prime, and it will likely stay that way for a long time.

The other corner is the young Will Blackmon. At 24, he is still developing, but will soon be doing great things on the field as he gets ready to enter his prime. He forced two fumbles and recorded 35 tackles in 2008.

Safety Nick Collins is the best free safety in the NFC without a doubt. He had a career year, posting seven interceptions, one forced fumble, 15 pass deflections, and three touchdowns.

He is only 25 and is only getting better. Expect greater things.

Maybe even Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu numbers.

Joining him is Atari Bigby, who posted solid numbers for someone who only played eight games. Imagine what kind of damage he could do in 16. He posted 21 tackles and an interception last year.

No. 1: Tennessee Titans

The roster for the Titans is full of stars who had breakout seasons in 2008. Cortland Finnegan, Chris Hope, and Michael Griffin are among those.

If Michael Griffin knocked on your door, 90 percent of people whouldn't know who he is. But opposing quarterbacks know who he is. At free safety, he made his mark as one of the young, rising stars in this league. Griffin had an astounding 75 tackles and seven picks, tied for second most in the league.

Playing next to him is strong safety Chris Hope.

Hope had another great season, one of many in his career. He had four interceptions, a forced fumble, and a sack—the first of his career. He was voted to the Pro Bowl with Michael Griffin and Cortland Finnegan.

Speaking of the latter, Finnegan cemented himself as one of the best corners in the league. He had five interceptions, one of which he returned 99 yards for a touchdown, nine yards short of Ed Reed's record.

He also has 70 tackles, a sack, and 17 pass deflections. Pretty good for a cornerback.

He joins Nick Harper, who had four interceptions last year.

Honorable Mentions

Philadelphia, Minnesota, Dallas, San Diego, Oakland, Miami, Tampa Bay.

Derrick Mason's Return Doesn't Take Pressure Off Mark Clayton

The return of wide receiver Derrick Mason after a short three-week retirement, was a sigh of relief for Ravens fans everywhere. But just because the return of Mason gives QB Joe Flacco a solid number one receiver, doesn't give number two receiver Mark Clayton a break.

The former round one pick has shown flashes of brilliance in his four year career, but he lacks the one thing most important: consistency. Mark Clayton would have a great game one day and disappear the next.

An example of this was his game against the Cincinnati Bengals in week 13. Clayton not only caught a deep bomb one handed, but also threw a ball down field for a touchdown to Derrick Mason. He finished the game with 164 yards off of five receptions.

The next week, against Washington, he caught two balls for only 19 yards. He didn't score another touchdown the entire year, and didn't break 100 yards until week 17, with 128.

However, it isn't just his past performances that are putting pressure on him. Clayton never really had high expectations. The Ravens have featured a run first offense throughout the 13 years of their existence, so he was never asked to do much.

Clayton hasn't had the best people throwing passes to him. He had an aging Steve McNair, and Kyle Boller, who is...well, Kyle Boller. Now he has Joe Flacco throwing to him. The pressure has built immensely.

Under the new offense ran by Cam Cameron and Joe Flacco, is going to feature a lot more passing than before. Although primarily running focused, Clayton and Mason will see a lot more passing than previously, because of the arm strength, confidence and accuracy of their new quarterback.

Second year wideout Justin Harper's recent performance at training camp gives him the possibility of being replaced. Although unlikely. Harper has recently been loudly applauded for his recent training camp catches. Many for touchdowns, as well as several long runs to prove his speed.

The addition of Kelley Washington is a big factor for the Ravens passing game, and even Clayton's job. Although injury stricken over the years, Washington has shown a lot of potential.

If Drew Bennett comes out of retirement, Clayton will most likely be put at number three on the depth chart. He recently signed with the Ravens after his career in St Louis ended. A recent remission of a nagging knee injury made him retire only a day after signing

Fortunately Mason's return gives Clayton another two years or so to develop his skills, but he will still be under intense scrutiny from now one. Whether he is a number one or number two receiver.

What Is a Franchise Quarterback Exactly?

Franchise quarterback. You hear it all the time, you can't look up a team without finding articles about getting a "franchise quarterback."

It's everywhere. "This team found it's franchise QB. This team needs a franchise QB." You can't escape it.

But what is a franchise quarterback?

It's odd that you see a word tossed around so much, but no one knows the exact meaning. Everyone talks about who is a franchise QB, but not what is a franchise QB is. You can't label a franchise QB unless you know what it is.

After research about people who are labeled as "franchise quarterbacks" and those who aren't considered as such.

The player must match certain criteria to be considered a franchise quarterback: consistency, talent, leadership/maturity, and football intelligence.

Consistency

In order to be a franchise quarterback or to find one, the player needs to be able to perform a certain level all the time. That doesn't mean he has to be spectacular, but he can perform at a good performance day in and day out.

Someone who throws five touchdown passes and no interceptions in one game, then throws five interceptions and no touchdowns the next would not make a good franchise quarterback.

If someone throws two touchdown passes and one interception in one game, and then repeats that performance every game, that is one step to becoming a "franchise QB."

Talent

You can run the ball as many times as you like, your defense can score as many points as you like. But the fact remains, if you're quarterback is a bum, your team will suffer.

Some teams feature a run first offense, where the quarterback is more of a game manager, but when he is needed, a true franchise QB can step up and make big plays for his team.

Quarterbacks like Joe Flacco, Jake Delhomme, or Ben Roethlisberger aren't asked to throw a lot, nor is anyone expecting great numbers to come out of them. But when the time comes, they all can step up their game, Roethlisberger in particular.

Leadership/Maturity

Players look to their quarterback. They look to them for help, they look for them for guidance, and if a QB is willing to accept that role, then they're not set to be a franchise player.

The entire offense runs around the quarterback, and it's his job to rally his team around him, or they all crumble.

This also includes being a team player. If a quarterback is more concerned about his passer rating over his teams win-loss record, he is doomed for failure.

He must be able to accept responsibility for his mistakes, and not point fingers and cast blame on other offensive players for his shortcomings. He must be able to remain cool under pressure and keep his composure when things get sour.

If he's cracking under pressure, and being a self-centered crybaby, then he isn't qualified.

Football Intelligence

I'm not talking about the player's IQ or Wonderlic score, I'm talking about his on field head game. The quarterback has to know what is going on the field at all times, no exceptions.

He needs to know where the safeties, where his receivers are going. He needs to be able to pick up a blitz and correctly change the play. If there are seven DB's on the field, he should know not to pass it unless he absolutely has to.

This also includes decision making. If he decides to continuously throw the ball into triple coverage, or decides to rush the ball himself into a blitz, he isn't a franchise quarterback.

So using the following criteria, you can know make a list of the franchise quarterbacks of the NFL, who is becoming a franchise quarterback, and who has the potential to be a franchise QB.

Failed Franchise Quarterbacks

Alex Smith—San Fransisco 49ers

Marc Bulger—St. Louis Rams

Derek Anderson—Cleveland Browns

Tyler Thigpen—Kansas City Chiefs

Kyle Boller—Baltimore Ravens (2003-08)

Potential Franchise Quarterbacks

Byron Leftwitch—Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Shaun Hill—San Fransisco 49ers

Vince Young—Tennessee Titans

Sage Rosenfels—Minnesota Vikings

Tarvaris Jackson—Minnesota Vikings

Troy Smith—Baltimore Ravens

Matt Leinart—Arizona Cardinals

Up-and-Coming Franchise Quarterbacks

Matt Ryan—Atlanta Falcons- All criteria, needs another year

Joe Flacco—Baltimore Ravens- All criteria, needs another year

Matt Cassel—Kansas City Chiefs- All criteria, needs another year

Jay Cutler—Chicago Bears- All criteria, new team

Kyle Orton—Denver Broncos- All criteria, new team

Carson Palmer—Cincinnati Bengals- Needs to stay healthy

Trent Edwards—Buffalo Bills- Needs consistency

Jason Campbell—Washington Redskins- Needs consistency

David Garrard—Jacksonville Jaguars- Needs consistency

Matt Schaub—Houston Texans- Needs to stay healthy

Kerry Collins—Tennessee Titans- Needs consistency

Matt Hasselbeck—Seattle Seahawks- Needs consistency/stay healthy

Current Franchise Quarterbacks

Drew Brees—New Orleans Saints

Peyton Manning—Indianapolis Colts

Donovan McNabb—Philadelphia Eagles

Ben Roethlisberger—Pittsburgh Steelers

Kurt Warner—Arizona Cardinals

Jake Delhomme—Carolina Panthers

Chad Pennington—Miami Dolphins

I hope you found this list and definition interesting. Hopefully now that people know what a franchise QB really is, people will throw around that word with a little more thought.

Big Ben in Ray Lewis Type Predicament

Despite being a star player on each team's most hated rivals, Ray Lewis and Ben Roethlisberger have something in common. It's not their championships, it's not their skill, it's not their leadership.

They have both have been accused of crimes they obviously didn't commit.

Both of the alleged crimes are considered the most reprehensible in society. Lewis's being murder, and Roethlisberger's being rape.

When Lewis was acquitted of murder, and charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice, his reputation was marred. Even to this day, his opponents say he was guilty and shout obscenities at him during games or over the Internet.

This coming season, Roethlisberger will face similar attacks, and it is likely that he will face attacks for the rest of his career.

Ben doesn't have a good track record when it comes to being shaken by a significant event. Following Super Bowl XL, Roethlisberger was injured in a scary motorcycle crash that could have taken his life.

Although he played in the 2006 season, Ben and the Steelers struggled all year, barely mustering an 8-8 record, including being the most sacked QB in the league. The Steelers were swept by the Ravens for the first time in franchise history, losing 27-0 and 31-7.

What Roethlisberger needs to do is to turn his tribulations around and benefit from them. In 2000, Ray Lewis faced considerable opposition and hostility. He turned it completely around to his benefit.

He used the hate directed toward him to fuel his motivation to be better than everyone else. And he proved it that season by winning the Defensive Player of the Year, leading his team to the Super Bowl, where they stomped the Giants 34-7, shutting out their offense.

To top it off, he was the Super Bowl MVP, only the second linebacker to do so, and the first linebacker on the winning team to win the award.

Ben Roethlisberger needs to keep his head together. If he doesn't, he will crumble like he did in 2006, and possibly take his team with him. It would be even better if he can turn all the hate and obscenities into motivation.

If he can turn his hardships to his advantage, then he will come out of this stronger than he was coming in. But if he lets this situation get to his head, it could be a disaster for the 2009 Steelers.

Do Dreadlocks Make Players Better?

More and more players are seen sporting dreadlocks these days. And it seems that the majority of them, if not all, are star players. The list of players goes on.

Larry Fitzgerald, Chris Johnson, Roddy White, Steven Jackson, Al Harris, Marion Barber, Devin Hester, Josh Cribbs, Bob Sanders, Marshawn Lynch, Atari Bigby, Asante Samuel, Rashean Mathis, and Reggie Williams.

I could go on all day. But let's take a look at a select few.

Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals

Fitzgerald is arguably the best receiver in the game. This man can jump like he's on the moon, and can run past any defender like they are standing still. He made an even bigger name for himself in the postseason.

His stats in the regular season looked like this:

-96 receptions, 1,431 yards, and 12 touchdowns.

His stats in four postseason games were:

-30 receptions, 546 yards, and seven touchdowns.

As you can see, Fitzgerald is a dominant player. Now, let's compare him to his bald-headed counterpart, Terrell Owens. Owens finished with 69 receptions, 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns.

As you can see, the player with dreadlocks played superior to the bald or short-haired player. And the Arizona Cardinals won their division, and were the NFC Champions.

Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans

Chris Johnson was the rookie stud from the Titans. He was considered a top candidate for rookie of the year, but lost it to Matt Ryan. He was able to rush for over 1,000 yards, something many other running backs couldn't do.

Johnson's '08 stats are like this:

-251 carries for 1,228 yards and nine touchdowns. In the postseason he rushed for 22 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Now, let's take a look at a short-haired comparison. Frank Gore was the leading rusher for the San Fransisco 49ers. His stats look like this:

-240 carries for 1,036 yards and six touchdowns.

Once again, the player sporting the dreadlocks is the better player. While Johnson's stats aren't as good as the short-haired Adrian Peterson, Peterson got almost 100 more carries.

Johnson's team had an NFL-best 13-3 record, while Gore's team finished 7-9, aided by a late season surge.

Asante Samuel, CB, Philadelphia Eagles

Samuel was one of the top cornerbacks in the league last year. He was the anchor of the Eagles secondary, and earned himself a trip to the Pro Bowl as a reserve. Samuel sports dreadlocks. His 2008 stats looked like this:

-22 pass deflections, four interceptions, 64 interception yards, one touchdown, 31 solo tackles and four assists.

His short-haired counterpart will be Bryant McFadden, cornerback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. His stats looked like this:

-Eight pass deflections, two interceptions, no interception yards, 33 solo tackles and four assists.

While McFadden did play on a better team, Samuel outperformed him individually in everything but solo tackles.

Roddy White, WR, Atlanta Falcons

Roddy White was the favorite target of rookie QB Matt Ryan, and led the Falcons in receiving. Obviously, he has dreadlocks. His 2008 stats looked like this:

-88 receptions for 1,382 yards and seven touchdowns. In the playoffs, he had 11 receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown.

His counterpart will be Santana Moss, leading receiver of the Washington Redskins. His stats look like this:

-79 receptions for 1,044 yards and six touchdowns. His team didn't make it to the postseason.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. I have presented you with evidence as to why people with dreadlocks are superior football players compared to short-haired and bald-headed players.

Now, there are execptions: Andre Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Michael Turner, Ed Reed and a few others. But the fact remains that if you see a player on the football field with dreads, chances are he is a star.

Baltimore Ravens Wide Receiver Derrick Mason To Retire *Unconfirmed*

The Associated Press has reported that Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason is retiring at the age of 35, after 12 years in the NFL. Eight of those years were spent in Tennessee with the Titans, while the rest were with Baltimore.

Mason has yet to inform the team, but Mason reportedly told the website jocklife.com that he is reitiring. He said this in a statement.

"I have had a tremendous career and I played for two great teams, I had fun. In my career, I have been able to do everything but win a Super Bowl. I’ve had the opportunity to play on great teams and with great players. After 12 years, I have seen it all and done it all,”

He wasn't clear on his reason for retiring, although he says lack of enthusiasm led him to consider retirement.

“I have been thinking about this since the season ended. Emotionally I am just not that enthused. I have not been that enthused to get up and work out…it was getting to that point. This decision has nothing to do with the contract situation; I have made enough money, more than enough money. Emotionally there are things that are more important. It’s time right now."

Mason played at Michigan State before being drafted by the Tennessee Oilers in fourth round of the 1997 NFL Draft. He played with the Oilers/Titans.

He joined the Ravens in 2005 through free agency. He set several franchise records soon after. He became the Ravens first 100+ reception receiver in franchise history, a considerable feat considering the "run first" offense of the Ravens.

Last season, Mason was the favorite target of rookie QB Joe Flacco, and finished with 80 receptions, 1,037 yards, and five touchdowns.

Mason is not sure of what will follow his career in football, but say he wants to try broadcasting out. However, he says his family is what is most important.

While his departure leaves a big void in the passing game for QB Joe Flacco, Mason feels he has left Flacco in good hands.

“I have left them in great hands,” explained Mason. "Mark Clayton is a younger version of me and Williams can be a true player, he can be in the elite class. Smith, Harper, Washington, they all are a young group that can only be better with Joe in the backfield.”

As a Raven's fan, it is tough to say goodbye to the best receiver in franchise history, but I'm sure I speak on behalf of the fanbase when I say" Thanks for the memories and moments, I wish you luck in your retirement.

NFL Divisional Ranking Predictions.

What division is the best in football? It's hard to say, and even harder to predict. But the pre-season is approaching and I'm getting ancy.

This is a much disputed rankings of each division, and the predicted record of each team in that division, with analysis on why they have that record. Now as far as postseason success, you can't predict.

I based this off of talent of the team, final records of each team, and the talent of the players in each division.
Begin Slideshow

Steve McNair Findings Consistent with Murder-Suicide

In the homicide of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair and 20-year-old waitress Saleh Kazemi, the Medical Examiner's findings are consistent with murder-suicide evidence.

McNair was killed with four shots from a pistol, while Kazemi was killed by only one to the head. The gun used to kill them both was found next to Kazemi's body. The two had been dating for a few months.

Ballistics tests and gunshot residue was consistent with previous murder-suicides and other findings.

According to the Medical Examiner, McNair was killed at a distance, but the bullet wound in Kazemi's temple was from less than two inches away.

While the Nashville Police Department has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter, most people within the investigation believe it to be a murder-suicide case.

Make or Break Year For These Coaches/Players

2009 is going to be an important season for more than a few people. If these coaches or players don't succeed, they could see themselves out of a job by 2010.

Not all of them are on the axe list because of the their performance, but of because of their circumstances.

Jim Zorn, Head Coach, Washington Redskins

This one is beyond me. Jim Zorn has only been a head coach for a year, and posted an 8-8 record last year. Sure it's not great, but it could be worse. How could a young coach possibly be in position to be canned?

Well the reality is that he works for Dan Snyder. And Dan Snyder burns through more head coaches faster than Bowflex supposedly burns fat. From 2000-2008, he has hired then fired six coaches.

Most infamously, he fired Norv Turner mid-season, who went on to become the head coach of the Chargers, and found much more success there.

The Bottom Line: If Zorn doesn't perform to Snyder's ridiculously high standards, he'll be out of a job, and someone else will step into the hot seat.

David Garrard, Quarterback, Jacksonville Jaguars

I'm alone in this it seems, but I think Garrard is a good QB. He has a good arm, and he has a scrambling and rushing skill comparable to Michael Vick in his prime.

The only knock on him is his decision making, which led to a few boneheaded picks late in the season. And that is enough to upset the fans and put him in the hotseat.

The Bottom Line: Garrard's success lies in the team as much as him. If the Jags can reverse their 5-11 record, it won't really matter how he plays. If the Jags post the same record or worse, Garrard better put up some good numbers, or he'll be on the bench or out of work.

Tom Cable, Head Coach, Oakland Raiders

Like Jim Zorn this isn't necessarily about his skill, but about his boss. Tom Cable hasn't served a full season as a head coach but is already in the hot seat.

Al Davis is like Dan Snyder, just not as extreme. He burns through so many coaches you could have a full coaching staff filled with the people he canned. He posted a 4-8 record as interim head coach, as many wins as his predecessor in a full season.

The Bottom Line: Cable looks OK, for now. If he doesn't perform to the Absolute Dictator's liking, he'll join Norv Turner, Bill Callahan, Art Shell, and Lane Kiffin as former Raider coaches.

Jason Campbell, Quarterback, Washington Redskins

Jason Campbell may well be entering his last year as a Redskin. Jim Zorn seems committed to him, and I don't blame him. He threw 16 touchdowns in 2008 and only six interceptions.

But fans feel that he is the reason for the 'Skins late-season collapse that forced them into an 8-8 record and last in their division.

The Bottom Line: If Campbell and the Redskins can't perform well this year, Campbell will most likely be blamed. Being nailed to the cross by the fans and players could likely mean his benching or firing.

JaMarcus Russell, Quarterback, Oakland Raiders

JaMarcus Russell came into Oakland with high expectations. As of now, he has shown some flashes of brilliance, but only flashes. The pressure is on Russell now since the addition of veteran Jeff Garcia.

Garcia has a long track record, playing for five different teams before the Raiders. Not only that, he is a four-time Pro Bowler and posted a passer rating of 90.4 last year in 12 games.

The Bottom Line: If JaMarcus Russell can't have a breakout year or perform to Al Davis's standards, then Jeff Garcia will take his spot, and Russell will be on the bench.

Wade Phillips, Head Coach, Dallas Cowboys

People wanted Phillips to be fired at the disastrous end of the Cowboys' 2008 campaign. Phillips and the Cowboys topped the NFC in 2007 with a 13-3 record, only to fall in the Divisional Round to the Giants.

To be honest, the only reason that I can think of is that Phillips would be fired is his ignorance in press conferences. Every answer is either "I don't know" or "I can't answer that question."

The Bottom Line: Jerry Jones has given Wade Phillips one last chance as a head coach, and if Phillips doesn't return the favor, he'll be out of chances and out of a job.

LaDainian Tomlinson, Running Back, San Diego Chargers

How could a running back the caliber of LT be on this list? Well, the reality is that many believe that Tomlinson is running out of gas. After an injury-plagued season and barely scraping 1,000 yards, people thought Tomlinson was going to be traded or released.

People believe that Darren Sproles is the future of the Chargers, and that LT is a shell of his former self. Add that he hit the terrible age of 30 (for RB's), he could be backing Sproles up.

The Bottom Line: Tomlinson can't risk an injury, or a poor season. If he doesn't do any of those, Darren "Lightning Bug" Sproles will be the starting running back for San Diego.

Jamal Lewis, Running Back, Cleveland Browns

Lewis gained 1,002 yards rushing last year, a career low since his 2,000-yard performance for the Ravens in 2004. While Lewis has no one behind him to worry about, there is the possibility that he will be released.

Like LT, people think that Jamal Lewis is running out of gas, and that someone younger and faster has to take his place. Lewis needs to disprove that.

The Bottom Line: Lewis needs to improve his numbers greatly, and needs to help the Browns to a better record, or he will be retired or on a different team.

Brad Childress, Head Coach, Minnesota Vikings

This one beats the hell out of me. The Vikings have only been improving since Childress arrived. He posted, 6-10, 8-8, 10-6, with third, second and first divisional rankings. Childress also took the Vikings to a division title, and a home playoff game.

Yet, fans were still chanting for Childress's firing at games. Now, he is on a short leash from the owners, and he has to perform well to keep his job.

The Bottom Line: Childress needs to lead the Vikings to another playoff spot, and a playoff win in order to save his team and his job.

Dick Jauron, Head Coach, Buffalo Bills

Three straight 7-9 seasons do not look good on a resume. And Jauron's resume isn't too good. Despite starting the year 4-0, the Buffalo Bills collapsed mid season, and only won three more games.

For some unknown reason, Jauron was given a last chance to coach the Bills, when everyone thought he was going to be canned.

The Bottom Line: If Jauron can't put up a winning record, he is gone for sure. However, even with the additions they made in the offseason, the Bills are still a year away from competing with their division, and Dick Jauron doesn't have until next year.

Marvin Lewis, Head Coach, Cincinnatti Bengals

Lewis is in trouble. He has had one good season in his tenure, and he needs to repeat or Mike Brown will find someone else. The Bengals were 4-11-1 last year, and having the first tie in the NFL since 2002.

Lewis's future may be bright. The Bengals have vastly improved, on offense, and more importantly on defense. They gave up 22 points a game last year, and were victims of several blowouts.

The Bottom Line: Lewis must capitalize on the teams improvements, if he is to remain with the Bengals. However, they may be in the same situation as the Bills, needed one more year to compete. Unfortunately, Marvin Lewis doesn't have another year.

If these players and coaches can't do the job, you'll see some new backup players and assistant coaches come the 2010 season.

Steve McNair Tragedy Ruled a Homicide

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/CNN)- The shooting death of former Tennessee Titan/Oiler and Baltimore Raven, has been ruled a homicide. Nashville police confirmed their ruling July 5, however they have not disclosed any more details.

McNair ws also found dead with a 20 year old women identified as Saleh Kazemi. Kazemi was a a waitress at a restaurant the McNair family frequented.

All evidence points to a murder-suicide, although the Nashville Police Department has yet to confirm or deny the assumption. McNair was shot four times, the fatal shot being the fourth.

Kazemi died of a single bullet wound to the head, the 9mm pistol used to kill them both was found below her.

It is confirmed that McNair was having an extra-marital affair with Ms. Kazemi at the the time of their death. The likely cause of the event was an argument between the two.

The likely scenario that led to the argument was most likely McNair ending the relationship between the two. Kazemi took it the wrong way, then shot McNair, and took her own life shortly.

However likely, this is only a theory, and the scenario could have been different than a
murder-suicide or just different circumstances. All we can do is express our condolences to both the Kazemi and McNair families about this terrible tragedy.

Chris Johnson: A Young Star and an Ego To Match

Vince Young is on the bench and Adam "Pacman" Jones is doing reality TV, so the focus in Tennessee is on the team, right? Apparently not.

Chris Johnson has reportedly called an end to the running back duo with LenDale White, known as "Smash and Dash."

"Smash and Dash have had a divorce—that's official. I have to be my own guy, so no more Smash and Dash, that was last year."

Folks, it gets worse. He later goes on and says:

"Every coach's dream, that's me. Because they say every team has it's own identity. I feel for me, I can't be noticed as a group any more. I am my own guy.''

Every coach's dream, huh? More like every coach's nightmare.

I have to feel bad for Jeff Fisher. He has spent the last few offseasons trying to get rid of all the egos on the team, and now has more to deal with.

Listen up, Chris, because if you don't want to hear this speech for the rest of your career, wise up while you can.

You're obviously not getting the point of playing football. The point of football isn't to make a name for yourself, it isn't to show yourself off to everyone. It's to make a name for your team, and it is to show off your team.

More importantly, it is to win, and last time I checked, you have to be on a team to win.

I know the concept of being on a team is new to you, but you have to understand it. Stop worrying about how you will be noticed, and start worrying about winning the game. Don't let the fame get to your head.

"...they say every team has its own identity..."

That's right: Every team has its own identity, but you are not the team. You are on a team; everything isn't just you. You are not the Tennessee Titans, and they would do fine without you. You are on the Tennessee Titans. You work to make them look special, not to make yourself look special.

It would really make your life a lot easier if you refrained from running your mouth like that. Terrell Owens did the exact same thing you did, and he has been dumped by three teams and has an empty ring finger.

Don't fall down the path of the diva; it will only make things worse. And if you have to break up "Smash and Dash," think of an excuse that doesn't make you look like a fool.

The 2008 Raven's had a lot to be proud of, especially the defense. There are now some holes to be filled on the team with several offseason losses, Corey Ivy, Bart Scott, and Jim Leonhard. This is an overview of the replacements and the returners.

Well, there you have it. An overview of all the playmakers on the Ravens defense. As for team rankings and how they compare with others, I have that for you as well:

Yards per game: Second

Points per game: First

Against the run: Second

Against the pass: Third

Takeaways: First

Scoring: First

Overall league ranking: Second. As much as I hate the Steelers, there is no denying that they are absolutely loaded on defense, and haven't changed much in the offseason.

Predicted record: 10-6 or 11-5. They have a murderous schedule this year, but they have the personnel to overcome it.

I hope you found this informative, feel free to leave any comments, questions or concerns, or if you just want to blast me with hate.
