College Football Preview: Michigan vs. Ohio State

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan Has the Ball...

Michigan's Passing Attack vs. Ohio State's Secondary

Zac says: A return to the lineup by Martavious Odoms would give the passing game a big boost. The emergence of Roy Roundtree over the past few weeks has been encouraging but the passing game has remained inconsistent nonetheless.

Tate Forcier completed 20 of 26 passes last week and will need an efficient performance Saturday to give his team a chance against Ohio State's stout defense. Advantage: Ohio State

Matt says: Michigan simply hasn't been able to get the passing game going in a consistent way this season. Tate Forcier is still stuck in the habit of holding onto the ball for too long, and putting the ball on the turf too often. Roy Roundtree has been a nice surprise in the season's second half, but they'll need more than one receiver to be successful against the Buckeye defense. Advantage: Ohio State

Michigan's Running game vs. Ohio State's Front Seven

Zac says: Brandon Minor will reportedly miss the game this week. Carlos Brown has stepped up admirably in his absence earlier in the year, although Saturday's game may feature a running back-by-committee effort. An effective running game and ball control will be keys for the Michigan offense.

Fortunately, the running game has been the brightest spot of the team. Unfortunately, it hasn't shone as brightly against some of the other top defenses in the league. Advantage: Even

Matt says: The Michigan running game will take a huge hit if Brandon Minor is unable to play. Vincent Smith and Carlos Brown have both shown that they are capable playmakers, but neither have stepped up as an every down back to carry the load without Minor.

The Wolverines will need to mix up the runners and establish a successful ground game early in order to have much offensive success. Advantage: Even

When Ohio State Has the Ball...

Ohio State's Passing Attack vs. Michigan's Secondary

Zac says: Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor hasn't been asked to carry the offensive load on his arm alone. Pryor has averaged just 160 pass yards per game on the year and has thrown for 15 touchdowns compared to nine interceptions.

Thirteen touchdowns have been caught by wide receivers DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher. Pryor has thrown the ball effectively when he's had to, but that may not be necessary this week. Advantage: Ohio State

Matt says: Although Terrelle Pryor hasn't had the season that most expected out of him, he's still capable of making big plays. Michigan's pass coverage has been soft, at best, this season, and Ohio State will be more than willing to take advantage of that fact. As long as Pryor can take care of the ball, OSU can have a big day through the air. Advantage: Ohio State

Ohio State's Running Game vs. Michigan's Front Seven

Zac says: Brandon Saine and Dan Herron are the kind of thunder and lightning combination that most teams covet. The Buckeyes have put up some impressive rushing totals as of late to drastically close the gap on Michigan for the Big Ten's top rushing attack. The Michigan defense has allowed nearly twice as many rushing yards as the Ohio State defense. Advantage: Ohio State

Matt says: The Buckeyes' dynamic duo of Saine and Herron have combined for over 1,000 yards rushing this season. Throw in a little over 600 yards for Pryor and it's easy to see that the Buckeyes are one of the better running teams in the conference. The Wolverine front may be in over their heads in this one. Advantage: Ohio State

Bottom Line...

Zac (7-4) says: Expect a disappointing end to a second consecutive disappointing season in Ann Arbor. Ohio State might be a overrated this season but Michigan should still have quite a bit of trouble with the Buckeyes on both sides of the ball. Terrelle Pryor's high school coach stated earlier this year that Pryor may have chosen the wrong school.

I'm sure Terrelle would love to prove he made the right decision. Final Score: Ohio State 33, Michigan 23

Matt (5-5) says: It's never easy to predict what will happen in a rivalry game, but the recent trends speak for themselves. The Wolverines come in as losers of six straight games against FBS opponents, and ride a five year losing streak against the Buckeyes.

Michigan will need to eliminate turnovers and come up with a few takeaways in order to have a chance in this one. If the Buckeyes get out to an early lead, it'll be goodnight sweetheart time, but I'm sure the Wolverine Seniors will be fired up for their final game in "The Big House". Final Score: Ohio State 35, Michigan 17

College Football Preview | Michigan at Wisconsin

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan Has the Ball...

Michigan's Passing Attack vs. Wisconsin's Secondary

Zac says: Tate Forcier may have found a new favorite target with last week's emergence of wide receiver Roy Roundtree. Michigan's passing game has struggled at times this year because of the lack of a true go-to receiver. If Forcier can spread the ball around the field and count on Roundtree to make a big play when needed, then Michigan fans may see some progress in the passing game. Keep an eye on Chris Marados; his four interceptions leads the Badger defense. Advantage: Even

Matt says: Rumors were rampant on Friday that Denard Robinson would get the start Saturday at Wisconsin. Even if the rumors turn out to be true, I would still expect Tate to see the lions share of time under center. Denard Robinson should get more looks (the Wolverines need big plays), but Tate is still a much more polished passer, mistakes included. Advantage: Even

Michigan's Running game vs. Wisconsin's Front Seven

Zac says: Michigan leads the Big Ten in scoring because of their strong running game. Five Michigan runners have each reached the 200 yard mark for the season, while seven runners have achieved per carry averages of at least 5.3 yards on at least ten carries. Brandon Minor exploded last week with an effort that combined power and speed. Wisconsin's defense ranks behind only Ohio State in stopping the run but don't count on anyone slowing down the Wolverine ground game for 60 minutes. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Whether or not Michigan has success on the ground (and on offense as a whole) will depend on the health of Brandon Minor. Wisconsin has one of the best run defenses in the conference, and we've learned that the Wolverines can lean too much on their passing game. If Minor can carry the load, Michigan has a chance at running a balanced offense which would help to keep their defense off the field. Advantage: Even

When Wisconsin Has the Ball...

Wisconsin's Passing Attack vs. Michigan's Secondary

Zac says: Scott Tolzien has been solid for much of the season, but not spectacular. Fortunately for Tolzien, the Michigan secondary has been less than solid. The Wolverines have given up more pass yards than any other Big Ten team except for Indiana. Purdue's Joey Elliott enjoyed a career game opposite the winged helmet last week in Purdue's first win in Ann Arbor in 43 years. Nick Toon will require a lot of attention from the defensive backs but the Badgers' biggest playmaker in the passing game may be Garrett Graham. Graham's four touchdown receptions leads the team. Advantage: Wisconsin

Matt says: Wisconsin ranks as one of the worst passing teams in the Big Ten, but Michigan is also near the bottom of the list in pass defense. There really wont be a winner of this matchup, just a bigger loser. The only way Michigan wins this matchup is if the run defense can force the Badgers into long passing situations. Advantage: Wisconsin

Wisconsin's Running Game vs. Michigan's Front Seven

Zac says: John Clay beat out Zach Brown for the starting tailback spot in training camp and hasn't looked back since. Despite a knee injury in the second half of last week's game, Clay ran for 134 yards on just 15 carries against Indiana. Brown and Montee Ball may also see a few carries as the game progresses. The Michigan front line will need to stay focused on their assignments all game long and avoid the big play in order to be successful. Advantage: Wisconsin

Matt says: The Badgers are always known for a bruising ball control running offense, and this year's team is no different. Running back John Clay is the Big Ten's leading rusher with 973 yards on the ground this season. Wisconsin won't look to make flashy plays in the run game; they simply line up and run it straight at the defense. If Wisconsin can control the line of scrimmage and the game clock with the running game, it will be another ugly day for the Wolverine defense. Advantage: Wisconsin

Bottom Line...

Zac (6-4) says: Playing at Camp Randall Stadium is always tough; playing on Senior Day adds an extra level of difficulty. This game is a real gut check for Rich Rod's guys and may decide the fate of the entire season. The strong running games of both teams may make this one of the quickest played college football games of the year. Final Score: Wisconsin 27, Michigan 23

Matt (4-5) says: I want to pick Michigan in this game, and I really want to see them win, but it's a difficult matchup in one of the toughest road venues in college football. Time is running out on Michigan's season and bowl eligibility hangs in the balance. Michigan must control the ball on offense to give the defense a rest, and the defense must limit big plays so the offense doesn't have to play from behind the entire game. Maybe I'd pick Michigan if this game was in Ann Arbor, but it's not, so I won't. Final Score: Wisconsin 31, Michigan 24

College Football Preview | Michigan vs. Purdue

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan Has the Ball...

Michigan's Passing Attack vs. Purdue's Secondary

Zac says: Wolverine quarterbacks completed just 14 passes last week. Martavious Odoms will miss this week's game against Purdue, another blow to the Michigan passing game. Roy Roundtree and Junior Hemingway were able to manage a couple big gains against Illinois but big blue's air attack has lacked a down field threat for much of the season. Advantage: Even

Matt says: Tate Forcier's coronation appears to be on hold as the struggles begin to mount. He's only been average at best since the Notre Dame game, and it seems that sacks, fumbles, throwaways, and injuries are becoming the norm. There is no down field threat on this team but UM can be successful if they stick to the screens, slants, and quick hitters. Advantage: Michigan

Michigan's Running game vs. Purdue's Front Seven

Zac says: Brandon Minor is finally healthy enough to bring his down hill running style at full speed. Adding this dimension to the Big Ten's best rushing offense makes for a scary match up for the Boilermaker defense; Purdue ranks tenth against the run in the Big Ten. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Brandon Minor had a huge game against Purdue last season (155 yards, three touchdowns) and Michigan sorely needs him to repeat that performance this week. The good news is that no one has had success stopping Minor when he's been healthy (or near-healthy) this season. Advantage: Michigan

When Purdue Has the Ball...

Purdue's Passing Attack vs. Michigan's Secondary

Zac says: Joey Elliott has done a nice job of leading the Purdue passing game. Not much was expected out of the Boilermakers this year but Elliott has managed to put the passing offense in the top half of the Big Ten. Michigan would make things easy on themselves by coming up with a few turnovers. Advantage: Even

Matt says: Joey Elliot has done a good but not great job with the passing game, but Michigan's struggles in the secondary have been well documented. I'm way past hoping Michigan can win the passing battle on defense, so now I just hope the damage is limited. Advantage: Purdue

Purdue's Running Game vs. Michigan's Front Seven

Zac says: Illinois torched the Michigan defense for 377 rushing yards last week. If the Michigan defense has any character whatsoever they will step up and keep Ralph Bolden and the Purdue rushing game in check. Greg Robinson has shown the ability to make adjustments and a big one is in order this week. Advantage: Even

Matt says: The Michigan run defense has been a mystery to me. At times, they've been a brick wall to opposing runners, but they haven't found consistency. A stiffened run defense could help the pass defense tremendously. Advantage: Michigan

Bottom Line...

Zac (6-3) says: Michigan needs just one win to gain bowl eligibility and needs to go out and grab it this week rather than taking another relatively weak opponent for granted. I expect the Wolverines will learn a lot from their debacle against Illinois and respond with a win. Final Score: Michigan 30, Purdue 20

Matt (4-4) says: If Michigan doesn't get a win this week, bowl eligibility may slip through their fingers. Purdue simply isn't a good team, but as Ohio State found out they can bite you if you're not ready for them. I'm betting on RichRod to have the boys prepared for this one. If the Wolverines can take care of the ball and limit turnovers (especially in the red zone!) they shouldn't have a problem.

Final Score: Michigan 35, Purdue 17

Michigan-Penn State: College Football Preview

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan Has the Ball...

Michigan's Passing Attack vs. Penn State's Secondary

Zac Says: Michigan's passing game ranks eighth in the Big Ten because quarterback play has been everything from great to horrible. This may be because they do not have a true go-to receiver. No Michigan receiver is averages over 40 yards per game. The heavy reliance on the running game against inferior opponents may have come at the cost of developing a more consistent passing attack. It will be difficult to find that consistency against the Big Ten's best pass defense. Advantage: Penn State .

Matt says: I had hoped that Michigan would use last week's scrimmage to get Denard Robinson in a rhythm throwing the ball, but he only passed four times. Forcier is starting to show a propensity for getting banged up in games, but the Wolverines don't have anyone behind him that can do the job through the air. Penn State will look to force Michigan into passing situations. Advantage: Penn State.

Michigan's Running Game vs. Penn State's Front Seven

Zac says: The Big Ten's top rushing attack will face the Big Ten's top rushing defense. Penn State is called "Linebacker U" for a reason. Great linebacker play and stuffing the run are traditions for Penn State. Michigan's biggest games on the ground have come against some of the worst run defenses in the country. While those games may give the Michigan offense a great deal of confidence, they can't expect a carbon copy against the Nittany Lions. Advantage: Even .

Matt says: Michigan's runners upheld their end of the bargain against a top-notch Iowa defense two weeks ago, and they didn't do anything to hurt their reputation against Delaware State last week. Michigan must win this matchup if they have any hope of knocking off the Nittany Lions. Advantage: Michigan.

When Penn State Has the Ball...

Penn State's Passing Attack vs. Michigan's Secondary

Zac says: Penn State has found the kind of consistency in the passing game that Michigan is after. Four Nittany Lion receivers have at least 20 catches on the year. Derek Moye is the biggest threat, with 27 catches and four touchdowns. Chaz Powell, Graham Zug, and Andrew Quarless should present matchup problems for the thin Michigan secondary. Advantage: Penn State.

Matt says: Quarterback Daryll Clark is having a fine season so far; he's completed over 62 percent of his passes and has a near 2-to-1 touchdown to interception ratio. The young Penn State receivers have done a nice job so far in support of Clark. The Michigan secondary finally had a good performance last week, but it was against far inferior talent. Advantage: Penn State.

Penn State's Running Game vs. Michigan's Front Seven

Zac says: Evan Royster is Penn State's do-everything back. Royster's 5.8 yards per carry average speaks to his talent. As a team, Penn State ranks behind only Michigan in Big Ten rushing totals. Stephfon Green is a capable backup and has also ran for better than five yards per carry. Michigan's rush defense has been much better lately, a trend that will need to continue. Advantage: Even.

Matt says: Evan Royster is surely a talent back, but spotty play from the Nittany Lion offensive line caused some inconsistency in the run game early in the season. Penn State has started to figure some of these issues out with nice rushing efforts against Minnesota, Eastern Illinois, and Illinois, however none of those teams are particulary good against the run. Advantage: Michigan .

Bottom Line...

Zac (5-2) says: Michigan has won the games they should, and been close with everyone else, including their win over Notre Dame. Michigan should have a chance to win this game if they can avoid the mistakes brought on by inexperience. The young Wolverines need to remember that taking a sack and punting can be a positive result. Michigan may still be a year away from truly playing with the big boys again; Saturday will be a good measuring stick game. Final score: Penn State 24, Michigan 20.

Matt (4-3) says: The quarterback play will be key for Michigan. Tate Forcier began the year as Michigan's hero, but he soon got into the habit of making poor decisions in attempts to make big plays. Both Forcier and Robinson, when in the game, need to forget about being the hero and focus on managing the game. The Michigan running game is good enough to lean on for big plays, so there shouldn't be much reason to force a bad throw early in the game. Michigan needs to focus on winning the battle in the trenches to keep Penn State close, and to keep themselves in the game. Final score: Michigan 28, Penn State 27.

College Football Preview: Michigan vs. Delaware State

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan Has the Ball ...

Michigan's passing attack vs. Delaware state's secondary

Zac says: The Michigan Wolverines should be able to pass the ball effectively against a team like Delaware State no matter who is under center. It will be important for guys like Greg Mathews to step up and prove what they can bring to the table. Michigan's receivers have been fairly unimpressive thus far. Kevin Koger has looked like the best receiving option and should get plenty of looks this week. The way Big Blue has been able to run the ball this year might make this match-up irrelevant. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: There were reports early in the week that Tate Forcier would be unable to play this weekend after suffering a concussion last week against Iowa, but it appears that Tate should be healthy enough to play (and start) Saturday. Even if Tate is able to go, expect to see a Denard Robinson in the game quite a bit. Forcier is still the starting quarterback, but Robinson showed that he needs more experience in order to be a viable option should something happen to Tate. Delaware State should be a perfect opponent for Denard to gain some confidence against. Advantage: Michigan

Michigan's running game vs. Delaware State's front seven

Zac says: Considering the Wolverines put up three rushing touchdowns against an Iowa defense that hadn't allowed a TD on the ground in 33 quarters, this match-up should be complete domination. Florida A&M ran over Delaware State for 328 rushing yards. Michigan has the kind of depth at running back that allows for free and easy substitutions without missing a beat. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Michigan's running game bounced back after a poor performance against the Spartans to shred the Hawkeyes last week to the tune of 195 yards and three touchdowns. A (finally) healthy Brandon Minor gave the squad a huge boost. Michigan should be able to have its way on the ground against Delaware state; the Hornets have given up over 200 yards per game against FCS opponents. Advantage: Michigan

When Delaware State Has the Ball ...

Delaware State's passing attack vs. Michigan's secondary

Zac says: Delaware State has only cracked 200 yards through the air once this season. Anthony Glaud was replaced by Nick Elko after suffering a first half injury. Elko was just 5-of-15 for 39 yards. Glaud has completed 57.5 percent of his passes but has not lead an explosive offensive attack, as shown in the numbers. Michigan's secondary is still trying to find itself and needs to focus on avoiding the big play. Brandon Graham's pass rush was big against Iowa. Similar efforts will help the secondary tremendously. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: The Hornets have only scored twice through the air this season, so the Wolverine secondary may catch a break this week. Maybe this is the week that the Michigan secondary finally wins the battle of the passing game. Advantage: Michigan

Delaware State's running game vs. Michigan's front seven

Zac says: The Hornets have a couple running backs with nice averages on the ground. Tahree McQueen, Jason Randall and Jaashawn Jones each average over four yards per carry. Of course, those numbers weren't put up against big time defenses. Expect Michigan's run defense to remain stout on Saturday. It would be a great sign to see them force a few fumbles as the defense hasn't made many big plays as of yet. Advantage:

Matt says: With the weakness of the secondary, the Wolverines really need to rely on the run defense to be effective. The Michigan front has been very good, at times, but moments of inconsistency have hurt this group. Michigan has done the best in run defense when the linebackers are actively seeking out the ball carrier. Advantage: Michigan

Bottom Line ...

Zac (4-2) says: The Wolverines have too much talent for the Hornets. They should have no problem putting up points against an FCS opponent, even in year two of the Rich Rodriguez spread. The defense will get a chance to run wild and make some plays in hopes of building momentum for the Penn State game next week. The goal for this week is to emerge healthy. Final Score: Michigan 42, Delaware State 0

Matt (3-3) says: We all remember what happened the last time Michigan took an FCS opponent lightly (hint: Appalachian State), but I can assure you that won't happen this time. Appalachian State was the class of the FCS (back-to-back national titles) at the time, but Delaware State has struggled to win games in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Final Score: Michigan 38, Delaware State 3

College Football Preview | Michigan at No. 12 Iowa

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan Has the Ball...

Michigan's Passing Attack vs. Iowa's Secondary

Zac says: The Michigan passing game stopped itself with dropped passes early in the game last weekend. Tate Forcier moved the ball through the air with authority once those catches were secured.

Forcier showed he won't be intimidated by a hostile crowd, so don't expect the crowd at Kinnick to get to him this Saturday.

The play of the Michigan receivers has been inconsistent, a pattern they will need to reverse against the Iowa secondary, which leads the Big Ten with 10 interceptions on the year. Sophomore Tyler Sash leads the team with five interceptions. Advantage: Even

Matt says: Tate Forcier will need to be more of a game manager against Iowa. He's gotten himself in trouble at times trying to make plays but not being able to escape the grasp of a lineman.

Michigan will need to get the backs and slot receivers involved with screen passes in order to open up the field for a big play.

It won't be easy for Tate this week; the Iowa defense will be licking their chops to get after the freshman QB, and the crowd should plenty of support for the Hawkeyes. Advantage: Iowa

Michigan's Running game vs. Iowa's Front Seven

Zac says: Michigan had a hard time establishing the run against the Spartans. As long as that was a result of an amped-up defense in a rivalry game and not a sign of future problems, then the Wolverines will be just fine.

Their performance allowed Wisconsin to take over the top spot among Big Ten ground attacks, but Wolverine runners had put Michigan among the top ten rushing teams in the nation.

Carlos Brown and Brandon Minor will be a formidable duo for Iowa's middle-of-the-pack defense. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: The word out of Ann Arbor is that Brandon Minor is healthier than he's been all season. The Wolverines need to get back to running the football with the dominance they showed early in the season if they hope to have success in Big Ten play.

I think the U-M coaching staff will make a concerted effort to get the ground game going. Let's hope last week was an aberration. Advantage: Michigan

When Iowa Has the Ball...

Iowa's Passing Attack vs. Michigan's Secondary

Zac says: The Michigan pass defense has been a disappointment so far. Boubacar Cissoko and J.T. Floyd have rotated in and out as neither has stepped up to take control of the job opposite Donovan Warren.

Iowa has spread the ball around this season with four receivers catching between 11 and 15 passes.

Derrell Johnson-Koulianos has explosive playmaking ability but has only scored once in 2009. Iowa's offense is more of the run-first mentality and doesn't generally put up big numbers through the air. Advantage: Even

Matt says: Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi has been prone to interceptions so far this season, but Michigan's secondary has been unable to put up much resistance.

The winner of this matchup will be the one that makes the fewest mistakes. Both the sides should give the opponent opportunities for big plays. Advantage: Even

Iowa's Running Game vs. Michigan's Front Seven

Zac says: Iowa's losses of Shonn Green to the NFL and Jewel Hampton to a season-ending injury have left them a little short at running back. That being said, Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher have stepped up and each averaged over 4.5 yards per carry.

The last time out was a challenge against Arkansas State as neither runner was able to top 50 yards. Michigan's run defense will be good enough if they can avoid giving up big chunks at a time. Advantage: Even

Matt says: Michigan actually did a nice job against the MSU running backs last week, but the 75 yards that they allowed to quarterback Kirk Cousins was not acceptable.

The Wolverine defensive line will need to do a better job of keeping contain to bottle the runners up. The Wolverine linebackers will need to do a better job in helping out the three-man front. Advantage: Even

Bottom Line...

Zac (4-1) says: The Iowa crowd may be even more rowdy than the fans in East Lansing last Saturday. A night game under the lights at Kinnick Stadium makes for one of the most difficult places to play in college football.

Michigan has something to prove following their disappointing play against Michigan State. Iowa had problems defending the way Arkansas State spread the field and needed a blocked kick to get by Northern Iowa, yet beat then No. 5-ranked Penn State in Happy Valley. Each team has something to prove, you can flip a coin on this one. Final Score: Michigan 27, Iowa 21

Matt (3-2) says: Michigan needs to put pressure on Stanzi to force him into making mistakes. The secondary just isn't strong enough to allow the quarterback to sit in the pocket long enough to find the open man.

On offense, the Wolverines need to establish the run early and take the crowd out of the game. This will be a difficult test for the Wolverines; a win would set a good tone for the rest of the season. Final Score: Michigan 35, Iowa 24

I'm Not Playing the 2009 Detroit Tigers Blame Game

It's hard to see a season end like that.

This season seemed to be gift wrapped for the Tigers on several occasions down the stretch. There was the seven-game lead with only a month remaining, there was the three-game lead with only four games to play, and there was last night.

The Tigers jumped to a 3-0 lead and the division crown was only six innings away. But the Twins clawed back and forced extra innings.

The Tigers struck in the 10th, when an Inge double plated Don Kelly, and the division title was only three outs away. But, again, the Twins fought back and tied it up to force another frame.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the 12th inning with only one out and Twins reliever Bobby Keppel, who seemingly couldn't find the strike zone. A win seemed to be only a base hit away. But Inge grounded into a fielder's choice and Laird struck out.

Threat over. Inning over. (And you could add in your mind) Game over. Season over.

It's easy to be emotional in a situation like this, to make a knee-jerk reaction, and to try to place the blame, but I'm not going to fall into that trap.

At the same time there's plenty of blame to go around, but none should be handed out.

You could try to blame the manager, Jim Leyland, for allowing the team to blow all those leads, but he's not the problem. Many experts picked his team to finish third or worse this season and he had them competing for a championship until the final out.

You could point a finger at Miguel Cabrera for his nighttime escapades during the season's final weekend, but Miguel was the only slugger the Tigers had for the duration of the season. He won more games than he lost.

One might try to blame General Manager Dave Dombrowski for adding Aubrey Huff and Jarrod Washburn, both of whom were worthless to the team in terms of production. But there's no way that Dombrowski could have predicted that both players would flame out—we all applauded both moves at the time.

You might try to finger someone outside the organization by blaming Randy Marsh, the game's home plate umpire. He missed the hit-by-pitch call that would have forced in a run and extended the inning for the Tigers in the top of the twelfth. But human error is part of the game; teams should't rely on officials to win or lose a game for them.

You could even think about blaming Brett Favre. He joined the Vikings, which prompted the NFL to schedule the Green Bay-Minnesota game for Monday Night Football, pushing the tie-break game to Tuesday. This extra day allowed the Twins to start Scott Baker instead of Brian Duensing, whom the Tigers touched up for five runs in 4.2 innings last week.

I care about this Tigers team—probably too much, but I won't go looking for a place to lay blame. Truth is, this team was flawed from the beginning. We saw them struggle to score runs all season and we saw them fail to take charge and extend the division lead from the moment the seized control on May 10.

So why should we be surprised that this team failed to score runs in important stretch games? Why are we surprised that they failed to put the Twins away at any of these opportunities?

I'm disappointed in the outcome of the game and I'm sad that there will be no playoffs, but I'm not going to play the blame game.

Let's get 'em next year.

No.22 Michigan-Michigan State | Battle For The Paul Bunyan Trophy

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan Has the Ball...

Michigan's Passing Attack vs. Michigan State's Secondary

Zac says: The extent of freshman phenom Tate Forcier's throwing shoulder injury won't be shown until his first few pass attempts on Saturday afternoon. As long as his passes look like the game winner against Indiana, Michigan fans can breathe easy. Michigan State's secondary was supposed to be a strength this season. That hasn't been the case so far, even with the secondary being Coach Dantonio's forte. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: With the great success of the running game, Michigan hasn't really had to lean on the passing game this season, but every time they have needed to go to the air Tate the Great has stepped up. No one really knows how Tate's injured shoulder will react this weekend, but it didn't seem to affect his late TD pass to Martavious Odoms last week. Michigan State ranks last in the Big Ten in pass defense, giving up almost 1,000 yards through the air in four games. Advantage: Michigan

Michigan's Running game vs. Michigan State's Front Seven

Zac says: Although the ground game may look a little different than the three yards and a cloud of dust days, it has been effective nonetheless. The Wolverines boast the nation's number seven rushing total while the Spartan run defense comes in at number five in the Big Ten. Notre Dame's Armando Allen and Wisconsin's John Clay each had big days against Michigan State. Expect Michigan's depth at running back to carry them to a big day on the ground. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Michigan has the talent and depth at the running back position to be effective against even the top defenses in the country. Senior Carlos Brown has lead the charge with a whopping 8.4 yards per carry average this season. Brandon Minor has been limited in his action due to injury, but he also boasts a strong average at 5.7 yards per carry. The Wolverines will need to count on the ground game to protect the battered freshman quarterback. Advantage: Michigan
When Michigan State Has the Ball...

Michigan State's Passing Attack vs. Michigan's Secondary

Zac says: Perhaps the most effective stopper of the Michigan State passing game has been Coach Dantonio. His insistence on splitting playing time between quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Keith Nichol has sacrificed offensive cohesion in favor giving each player game experience. Cousins is the man getting the job done now, Nichol is the man with the greater upside. I give the edge to Michigan State either way, but the Spartans can exploit that advantage even further if Dantionio commits to Cousins. Advantage: Michigan State

Matt says: The Spartans should look to exploit the weak Michigan secondary, if they hope to have success on Saturday. If Michigan continues to give the quarterback time to throw, the explosive Spartan trio of Blair White, Mark Dell, and B.J. Cunningham will wreak havoc on the defense. Look for the Wolverines to dial up the blitz in an attempt to disrupt the timing between quarterback and receivers. Advantage: Michigan State

Michigan State's Running Game vs. Michigan's Front Seven

Zac says: Like Michigan, Michigan State boasts a stable full of capable backs. Glenn Winston, Caulton Ray, Larry Caper and Edwin Baker have each seen a significant amount of carries in at least one game this year. Winston was the strongest Spartan runner in their last game against Wisconsin. The Spartans may lean on him again as he has the most experience out of the four. Keith Nichol is also a threat to run when put into the game. Advantage: Even

Matt says: The young Spartan runners have shown lots of potential, but none average more than 40 yards per game. Only Illinois has had fewer rushing attempts in the Big Ten, but they've only played three games. That, coupled with the fact that MSU hasn't had a run go for more than 25 yards tells me that they may be willing to abandon the running game when things get tight. Advantage: Michigan

Bottom Line...

Zac (4-0) says: Michigan historically struggles in their first road game. That being said, the quick trip up to East Lansing hardly qualifies. Vegas currently has MSU as a three point favorite and I can't say that I can argue with that, even with Michigan State's struggles so far in 2009. I've really had a hard time getting a good read on how things will play out on Saturday. Michigan State is fighting to save their 2009, Michigan is still fighting to forget 2008. The one thing I know is that the offenses should light up the scoreboard. Final Score: Michigan 41, Michigan State 37

Matt (3-1) says: Michigan's defense isn't going to shut anyone in conference play, we got confirmation of that last week, but the offense should be able to score with the best of them. Look for Michigan to keep the ball on the ground as long as Minor and Brown are having success. Hopefully Tate won't have to test that shoulder too often. As long as the Wolverines can be mildly successful in stopping the run and getting to the quarterback, they should be able to slow the Spartans enough to outscore them. Final Score: Michigan 38, Michigan State 31

Detroit-Minnesota: Tigers Find Way to Hold on to Sizable Lead

We've seen this scenario seemingly countless times this season. The Tigers jump out to a sizable lead and struggle to hang on as the game comes to a close, especially against the Twins.

These pesky Twins never give up—they find ways to scratch out runs and make you sweat until you undoubtedly break. They broke the Tigers in extra innings in the day portion of the double header, and they attempted to do the same in the nightcap.

I was breathing easy after the fifth inning. The Tigers had mounted a five run lead and the ace of the staff was on the mound.

Five runs was an explosion for this anemic offense. They wouldn't let that slip away. Would they?

The Twins answered back with two runs in the sixth inning and two more in the eighth. Groans could not be suppressed; the anxiety was palpable. The thought ran through my head, "not again, please, not now, not tonight."

The Tigers tacked on one insurance run, courtesy of a Curtis Granderson homerun—a temporary relief to the ever-increasing anxiety. But the relief was in no way permanent, and it quickly looked like the wheels might still fall off.

The end seemed to be moving inevitably toward a Tigers loss.

Fernando Rodney came in to shut the door and gave up a hit on a 0-2 count to Delmon Young. An infield hit, to be precise, and one that glanced off of the glove of Placido Polanco that should have been turned into an out.

The stars and planets began to align for the Twins.

Two outs later, the light hitting Nick Punto flipped a routine fly ball to deep center field. Curtis took one step in, then froze, then bolted toward the warning track, and the ball sailed over his head for a double.

One run came in and the tying run stood on second base.

I held my hands on my head in disbelief. Fernando Rodney should have recorded four outs already and yet the game was in doubt.

But it's a good thing that stars and planets have no bearing on the outcome of baseball games, or really anything, save astronomy.

Denard Span, Mr. Tiger Killer himself, hit an easy fly ball to left field and the Tigers shook hands.

I was flooded with relief. I pounded fists with a friend. I pounded fists with my wife. I even pounded fists with my seven-week-old daughter (though she didn't know what was going on and she doesn't know how to make a fist).

The Tigers found a way to hang on, but more importantly, they found a way avoid full-blown panic mode.

The playoffs seem so close and yet so far away. But when I stop to think about it, I realize that this is playoff baseball right now.

Win and you're in. Lose and you go (or stay) home.

It's getting dark, cold, rainy, and the leaves are falling off the trees. This is when baseball gets fun.

This is why baseball is fun.
Let's Not Kid Ourselves, Detroit Lions Are Still Bleeding From Losses

With all due respect to Mitch Albom (and anyone else who may have used this analogy over the past 24 hours), the bleeding has not stopped for the Lions.

The wound of a winless season, nineteen straight losses, nine years without making the playoffs, seventeen years without a playoff win, and a fifty-two year championship drought does not heal with a single victory.

The hemorrhage caused by the losing streak may be healing, the loss of blood is now controlled and no longer immediately life threatening. But the wound still runs deep under the fresh layer of gauze and medical tape. It's out of sight for the time, but if you peel back that layer it's still painful to look at, and it still stings when you touch it.

The only way the Lions can truly heal the wound is winning.

Respectability would likely cause the wound to scab over, a playoff appearance would leave only a scar. A playoff win would shrink that scar so that you have to squint in just the right light to see it, and only a Super Bowl win would make it disappear completely.

No, the Lions weren't wounded by a single winless season, and a single win didn't heal the wound, or even stop it from bleeding.

The Lions were wounded by decades of poor management, poor coaching, and even poorer play on the field.

For now, the life support has been removed and bandages have been applied, but drops of blood still stain the dressings from underneath. The only cure is time for it to heal.

Time, and fresh bandages every Sunday.

No. 23 Michigan-Indiana: College Football Preview

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan Has the Ball...

Michigan's Passing Attack vs. Indiana's Secondary

Zac says: Michigan's passing game has had some ups and downs through the first three games of the '09 campaign. Fortunately, the downs have come when the running game has provided all the offense Wolverine fans could ask for. Tate Forcier has shown the ability to exploit any secondary when needed. Forcier's ability to throw with accuracy on the run makes him a threat from anywhere on the field. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: The Wolverines didn't throw the ball much last week, but they really had no reason to put the ball in the air. The Michigan air attack hasn't left much to be desired, especially when Tate's in the game. Three of the four interceptions thrown by Wolverine quarterbacks have come from Denard Robinson and Nick Sheridan, which leaves Forcier with a more than solid five touchdown to one interception ratio. The Indiana defense grabbed four interceptions last weekend against Akron, but don't expect that to repeat this week. Advantage: Michigan

Michigan's Running game vs. Indiana's Front Seven

Zac says: Brandon Minor, Carlos Brown, Michael Shaw, and Denard Robinson each average over five yards per carry. The Hoosier defense has been tough against the run so far this year, although that was against the likes of Eastern Kentucky, Western Michigan, and Akron. Michigan's running game was good enough to beat Eastern Michigan single-handedly. Unfortunately for Indiana, they are on par with Eastern Michigan in terms of talent. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: The Michigan running game has proven to be the greatest strength of the team so far. How about some much deserved credit for an ever improving offensive line! Ranked third in the nation, Michigan averages 6.4 yards per attempt and just over 270 yards per game. The Indiana defense, on the other hand, has held opponents to only 2.5 yards per carry, which is good for sixteenth in the nation. So it appears to be strength versus strength in this matchup, but Indiana really hasn't been tested yet. Advantage: Michigan

When Indiana Has the Ball...

Indiana's Passing Attack vs. Michigan's Secondary

Zac says: Indiana quarterback Ben Chappell is a relatively big quarterback with a strong arm. The Michigan secondary may be the weak link of the Wolverine defense and will need to avoid getting themselves in trouble with penalties. Indiana's greatest chance for offensive success will be through the air. Look for the Hoosiers to challenge Donovan Warren and Boubacar Cissoko early. Advantage: Even

Matt says: I dogged the Michigan secondary before last week's contest but they performed well against Eastern Michigan. Indiana should be a step above Eastern in the talent category, especially at the quarterback position, but I think the Wolverine pass defense is improving. Cissoko did get flagged for a big yardage pass interference call, but that may have been one of the worst calls in the history of the forward pass (though I'm sure Miami (FL) fans would disagree). Tandon Doss, Damarlo Belcher, and Mitchell Evans all sport averages on the plus side of 11 yards per catch, but Michigan simply can't allow that to continue. Advantage: Michigan

Indiana's Running Game vs. Michigan's Front Seven

Zac says: Indiana's ground attack is led by Demetrius McCray, who averages 5.4 yards per carry. The Wolverine defense has held two of their first three opponents to under a four yard per carry average. McCray has benefited from playing against lesser talent, a luxury he will not have on Saturday. Linebacker Jonas Mouton will be back from his one-game suspension to put the Michigan defense back at full strength. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Michigan held Eastern running back Dwayne Priest to 3.4 yards per carry, which is almost a yard and a half lower than his season average, but the quarterbacks were allowed to escape for big gains too often. That won't be a problem this week though. Ben Chappell isn't the type to run so the Wolverine front can key in on the pass rush when he has the ball. Advantage: Michigan

Bottom Line...

Zac (3-0) says: Other than against Purdue, Indiana may not play another game this year in which their talent comes remotely close to the level of their opponent. Indiana will find tough going in the Big Ten schedule, beginning with the revived Wolverines. I expect Michigan to play with something to prove all year long; the Hoosiers will be just another roadblock to run through. Final Score: Michigan 38, Indiana 13

Matt (2-1) says: I expect a similar game to what we saw last week against Eastern and in the season opener against Western. Indiana is closer in talent level to a MAC school than a Big Ten school (or at least what kind of talent Big Ten schools should have). Michigan is greatly improved over last year, but even last year's Michigan team could have beaten Indiana. Final Score: Michigan 42, Indiana 20

Detroit Tigers Making Heartburn Medication Scarce in Michigan

The Tigers are bound and determined to keep this division race interesting.

First, it was the two week nose dive that they are just now (hopefully) coming out of, after they seemingly had the division tied up in a bow. And tonight, they made things interesting against the Indians.

After seven shutout innings from Edwin Jackson, who appeared to have his pitch-tipping problem solved, the Tigers' middle relief made things a little too tight for my liking.

Bobby Seay entered the game in the eighth and gave up two singles after recording the first out, giving way to Brandon Lyon. Lyon was able to force a fly out before the next two hitters, forcing in a run. He then struck out Luis Valbuena to end the inning.

Looking back, I guess it was only one bad inning. And it wasn't even that bad in the end, only one run scored, but it sure got my stomach churning. We've seen it before, the Tigers cling to a lead early on, but then can't quite hold on.

They were up five to two on the Royals before losing. They were up six to three against Toronto, and lost. They lead two to one in the eighth inning in Minnesota, but they lost that one too.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one to reach for the TUMS when the bases were loaded tonight in the eighth. Michigan area drugstores must be making a killing on heartburn relief medication these days (but I guess they need the sales with the state of the economy).

It's easy this time of year to lose baseball in the shuffle of sports.

The University of Michigan football team has the state in a tizzy as the team's potential morphs into reality. The train wreck that is the Detroit Lions continue to find new and inventive ways to lose games. The Red Wings prepare to begin a new season in pursuit of Lord Stanley's Cup.

But the Tigers are keeping us interested in baseball, in scoreboard watching, and in magical numbers, that ever-present nervous burn in our chests makes sure of it.

So all we can do is wait and watch and keep lots of Rolaids on hand. Because this race won't be decided until the bitter end.

No. 25 Michigan vs. Eastern Michigan: College Football Preview

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan Has the Ball...

Michigan's Passing Attack vs. Eastern's Secondary

Zac says: I expect Nick Sheriden to get some time under center this week. Settle down Michigan fans, it will be as the human victory cigar. Tate Forcier ought to slice his way through the Eastern Michigan defense in its first year under Ron English. The UM defense was susceptible to the spread attack under English, the same should follow for EMU with inferior talent. Denard Robinson hasn't shown much passing the ball but this week he should get the chance to air it out. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Michigan Freshman quarterback Tate Forcier has garnered national attention this week, including a debut on ESPN.com's Heisman Watch, after his rather impressive performance against Notre Dame. I would expect another strong performance from Tate, who continues to impress with the combination of escapability and passing accuracy, but I also expect to see a lot more of Denard Robinson at quarterback. I'll look for Michigan to use the opportunity to get Robinson engaged with the passing game. Advantage: Michigan

Michigan's Running game vs. Eastern's Front Seven

Zac says: Brandon Minor showed why he was the unquestioned starter in his return last week. Look for Minor to continue his hard running against a porous EMU run defense. When its all said and done, Michigan should have significant contributions from Minor, Denard Robinson, and Carlos Brown with some playing time for the younger backs. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Eastern Michigan allowed over five yards per carry to Northwestern's top two runners a week ago and over six yards per carry to Army two weeks ago. I expect Michigan to pound the ball with a myriad of runners until Eastern proves they can stop Michigan's running game (and that may not happen). Tate Forcier, Denard Robinson, Brandon Minor, Carlos Brown, Michael Shaw, and Vincent Smith should all see multiple carries, and all should see success. Advantage: Michigan

When Eastern Michigan Has the Ball...

Eastern's Passing Attack vs. Michigan's Secondary

Zac says: It might be easy to overreact to Notre Dame's assault on the Michigan secondary. Michigan will not face a better receiver combo than Michael Floyd and Golden Tate, certainly not from Eastern Michigan. The Wolverine secondary should be back to the form they showed in shutting down Western Michigan's Tim Hiller for much of the opener. If the front seven can get pressure on Andy Schmitt, the pass coverage will be fine. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Michigan has gotten burned in the secondary this year, but they've played some pretty good passing teams. Eastern Michigan quarterback Andy Schmitt appears to have some trouble taking care of the ball with four interceptions to go with only two touchdowns on the year. Michigan's secondary hasn't proven that they can be counted on to stop anyone through the air yet, but a good game against the Eagles would be a step in the right direction. Advantage: Even

Eastern's Running Game vs. Michigan's Front Seven

Zac says: Dwayne Priest is averaging a healthy 5.8 yards per carry for the Eagles. That was done against Army and Northwestern, not a rejuvenated Wolverine defense looking for a little vindication following a lackluster performance against Notre Dame's rushing attack. Look for Michigan's linebackers to be more active in run support since EMU has nothing close to Jimmy Clausen. A stacked box spells trouble for Eastern Michigan. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Michigan got beat by Armando Allen and the Notre Dame offensive line last week but I expect the Wolverine front to win the battle in the trenches this week. Michigan will need to lock down the running game if they hope to challenge the top teams in the conference. Look for the Michigan defense to come out ready to make a statement against a far inferior Eagles team. Advantage: Michigan

Bottom Line...

Zac says: The hunger of this Michigan team will help them avoid any sort of let down following a big win. I'm sure the men wearing maize and blue saw what happened last Saturday in East Lansing and want none of that. The final score should be the only thing in doubt. Rich Rodriguez will have to decide how to balance playing time between his first teamers and "first timers". Either way, Michigan wins easily.

Final Score: Michigan 38, Eastern Michigan 13

Matt says: Michigan will be able to put up "video game numbers" on Eastern if they chose to, even if they modify their substitution patterns to give the younger, less experienced guys some game time. I apologize to my mother-in-law, who I'm sure will be wearing her Eastern shirt in the stands on Saturday, but this one won't be pretty.

Final Score: Michigan 41, Eastern Michigan 6

Tigers Hope for Royal Payback Against Kansas City

The Tigers remain home after the skid-stopping series split (try to say that five times fast) with the Blue Jays to play host to the Kansas City Royals.

The Tigers were able to weather the storm of the five game losing streak thanks to some equally poor play from the Twin Cities, but they can't count on the Twins "having their back" the rest of the way.

This Royals series begins the final stretch of the season.

All nineteen games from here on out will be played against Central Division foes.

Let's hope this stretch begins with a bit of revenge, to erase the memory of last week's sweep at the hands of the Royals.

Tuesday, Sept. 15, 7:05 PM
Robinson Tejeda (2-1, 3.21) vs. Jarrod Washburn (9-8, 3.60)

I'm not too excited to see Mr. Tejeda toe the hill again, and I'm sure the Tigers hitters feel likewise.

Tejeda saddled Justin Verlander with a loss six days ago in Kansas City, throwing six innings of shutout ball while striking out eight Tigers.

The last run he allowed came way back on August 7. This guy's some kinda hot right now.

Jarrod Washburn's last outing ended with a no-decision in a Tigers loss at Kansas City last week.

Washburn's last (and only) win in a Tiger uniform came on August 25.

Getting a solid performance out of Washburn would be a huge boost to a Tigers staff, which has struggled as of late. No one would argue that Washburn has been a huge disappointment in a Detroit uniform so far.

Wednesday, Sept. 16, 7:05 PM
Lenny DiNardo (0-0, 3.60) vs. Eddie Bonine (0-0, 6.11)

DiNardo pitched well a week ago against the Tigers.

He made his season debut, limiting the Tigers to two runs over five innings, but did not factor into the decision. The Tigers didn't lack for hits in the game—they totaled fifteen—but four double plays and ten runners left on base erased their hopes of a win.

Eddie Bonine will make just his second start for the Tigers in 2009.

His previous start came in a win against the White Sox. Manager Jim Leyland has announced that Bonine will remain in the rotation for the duration of the regular season.

Bonine won't overpower hitters and he's likely to allow some hits, so the defense needs to be on their toes.

In the same way, the Tiger hitters will need to be ready to swing the bat against DiNardo who should also prove to be hittable.

Thursday, Sept. 17, 1:05 PM
Zach Greinke (13-8, 2.19) vs. Edwin Jackson (12-6, 3.22)

The Tigers aren't fortunate enough to miss Greinke for a second straight series.

He's my vote for the American League Cy Young Award (although I don't officially have a BWAA Badge) and has dominated almost everyone almost all season. The only reason Greinke may not win the award is because his offense is usually too inept to score him any runs (sound familliar?).

The Tigers will send out Edwin Jackson, who's had his own run support issues this season.

Jackson, who has struggled since the All Star break, will need to dial it in if the Tigers hope to escape with a win against Greinke.

Around the AL Central
Upcoming Schedule:
Tigers: KAN 9/15-9/17, MIN 9/18-9/20
Twins: CLE 9/14-9/16, @DET 9/18-9/20
White Sox: @SEA 9/15-9/17, KAN 9/18-9/20
Indians: @MIN 9/14-9/16, @OAK 9/17-9/20
Royals: @DET 9/15-9/17, @CWS 9/18-9/20

Current Standings:

Team

GB

Tigers

0

Twins

5.5

White Sox

6.5

Indians

16

Royals

20

The Tigers magic number is 14.

This is the total number of Tiger wins and second place team losses needed for the Tigers to secure their first division championship since 1987.

Whoa Nelly! This Michigan Wolverines Team Is Much Better than Advertised

Michigan certainly looked like a good football team after the 31-7 drubbing of Western Michigan in the season opener. After watching the Wolverines vanquish the Irish this past Saturday in the Big House, all doubt in my mind has been erased.

This team is going to a bowl game this year.

Six wins and a bowl appearance seemed to be the measuring stick for Big Blue this season. Anything less would bring louder calls for the head of Rich Rodriguez. But Michigan doesn’t seem to be teetering on the edge of the six-win bowl eligibility knife any longer.

They’ve fallen squarely onto the bowl appearance side of the blade. In fact, they now sit in that position so comfortably that I can confidently make the following statement.

It’s more likely that Michigan will play in a BCS bowl game this season than miss playing in a bowl game altogether.

Now, of course I’m not suggesting that the Maize and Blue will be selected for a Bowl Championship Series game. I’m not that great a fool. Their win total may very well be closer to six than 11 in the end.

What I am suggesting is that, given two choices, it is more conceivable that this team wins 10 or 11 games than only five.

As the expectations for this team soar, they can ill afford to relax even a little bit, but I doubt they will. The scrappy team of kids seemingly too young to know they’re in over their heads seems to have taken the team mantra “all in for Michigan” to heart.

On Saturday, it didn’t matter that Notre Dame was older and more experienced. It didn’t matter that they couldn’t stop the Irish passing attack. It didn’t matter that a true freshman was being counted upon to engineer the game-winning score.

Rodriguez can no longer perform his song and dance about having three No. 1 quarterbacks; he showed his hand on Saturday. When the game is on the line—as it was against the Irish—Tate Forcier is his guy.

And so Forcier, the never-nervous freshman, will continue to be Rodriguez’s guy all season—and he’ll lead the way to a bowl game.

Michigan-No. 18 Notre Dame: College Football Preview

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan has the ball...

Michigan's passing attack vs. Notre Dame's defensive backs

Zac says: Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson showed they are no ordinary freshmen with their performances against Western Michigan. The mobility of each will force the Notre Dame defenders to choose between playing the run and sticking with pass coverage.

The beauty of the Michigan offense is that the Irish might get burned either way. Tate is the better passer and Michigan will need him to make plays through the air to be successful. His accuracy, added to the fact that the game is at home, makes that a possibility. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Denard Robinson did not show much last week as far as his passing game is concerned. He'll need to step up more in that department in order for the two-quarterback system (is Rich Rodriguez really still planning on playing Sheridan?) to be truly successful against the Irish.

Michigan showed significant improvement over last season in the win over Western Michigan, but Notre Dame's defense looks to be much more experienced than Western's. Advantage: Even

Michigan's running game vs. Notre Dame's front seven

Zac says: Michigan quarterbacks represented too large a percentage of the team's running attack against Western Michigan. The Wolverines will need steady production from Brandon Minor, Carlos Brown, and Michael Shaw to keep the Irish defense from keying in on the quarterback.

Michigan lost four fumbles in the rain soaked contest last year, a number that can't come close to being repeated. Notre Dame gave up a 5.3 yard-per-carry average in their opener against Nevada. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Brandon Minor should return from injury for the Wolverines to give a boost to an already successful running game. Minor combines speed with an element of power to compliment fellow running back Carlos Brown and freshman speedster Denard "Shoelace" Robinson. Michigan will look to the running game to carry the load against the Fightin' Irish, who gave up a 5.3 yards-per-carry average last week. Advantage: Michigan

When Notre Dame has the ball...

Notre Dame's passing attack vs. Michigan's defensive backs

Zac says: The Michigan secondary will be tested by a pair of accomplished Notre Dame receivers. Golden Tate caught four passes for 127 yards and a touchdown against the Wolverines a year ago, while Michael Floyd is coming off a four catch, 189-yard, three-touchdown performance against Nevada. It doesn't hurt that the ball is being thrown by a third-year starter. Donovan Warren and Boubacar Cissoko were physical with the Western Michigan receivers and will need another outstanding performance to limit the Irish passing game. Advantage: Notre Dame

Matt says: Irish QB Jimmy Clausen had himself quite a day last Saturday against Nevada. Clausen missed the target only three times en route to 315 yards passing and four touchdowns. The Michigan secondary held Western Michigan quarterback Tim Hiller in check for much of the first half, but Hiller still managed 259 yards through the air. Notre Dame will look to attack Michigan through the air for much of the game, and if the Wolverines fail to put pressure on the passer the defensive backs will get burned all afternoon. Advantage: Notre Dame

Notre Dame's running game vs. Michigan's front seven

Zac says: Notre Dame fullback James Aldridge will not play due to injury. The Irish put up 178 yards on the ground last week, but needed 41 carries to get there. The Michigan run defense was surprisingly stout against the Broncos, allowing just 38 yards on 24 carries. Defensive Coordinator Greg Robinson faced Notre Dame last year as the head coach of Syracuse. His defense held the Irish running game to 41 yards on 28 carries. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Michigan allowed 3.3 yards per carry against Notre Dame a year ago, and the run defense looks to be even better this season. It appears that Greg Robinson has the Wolverine defense hungry to hit and wrap up the ball carrier. Michigan won the battle in the trenches against the Broncos last week and should carry the momentum into Saturday's rivalry matchup. If the tackling remains as solid as it was last week, there's no reason Big Blue won't win this match-up. Advantage: Michigan

Bottom line

Zac (1-0) says: Both teams are obviously improved over a year ago. The question is by how much. Both teams are led by coaches that have seen their share of heat. The question is how will each team respond. The answer is: Final Score: Michigan 24, Notre Dame 23

Matt (1-0) says: I'm expecting a close one this week. Again, the key will be how well the Michigan defensive line performs. If Brandon Graham can get to the quarterback and Mike Martin and company can slow the running game, the secondary has a chance at containing the Notre Dame passing attack. If not, Jimmy Clausen could have a field day against the Michigan secondary. Final Score: Notre Dame 23, Michigan 17

Tigers Take Care of Business in Tampa

For one night the Tigers hitters and pitchers played role reversal.

When starter Armando Galarraga struggled out of the gate, allowing four runs to score in the first inning and shouldering six earned runs without making it through the third inning, the game seemed lost.

All season the pitching has been charged with carrying the offense. If they allowed more than four runs in a given game you might as well head for the exits. The 2009 version of the Cardiac Cats don't have much of a history of combackability, if you will.

The Tigers haven't been in the business of scoring bunches of runs this season, but that was the task that was required of them. And on this one particular evening in Tampa, the Tigers hitters were equal to the challenge.

To the tune of eleven hits and eight runs, the Tigers offense fought back. Jim Leyland—who may very well be earning that contract extension—pulled all the right strings. Pinch runners scored the Tigers final three runs, and pinch hitter Marcus Thames singled in the eighth to put the Tigers into the lead for good.

But Leyland also made the right calls when turning to the bullpen. After Galarraga was lifted in the third inning, Eddie Bonine, Fu-Te Ni, Jeremy Bonderman, Bobby Seay, Zach Miner, and Brandon Lyon combined for four hits in six and two-thirds innings without allowing a run to score.

In all, the Tigers used 23 players en route to recording the win, their fifth win in as many games in September.

There was a playoff feel to this game, both teams wanting to win badly. The Rays needed a win to keep their pursuit of a wildcard bid viable. The Tigers needed a win to keep the Twins at bay in the AL Central division. But Leyland bested Rays manager Joe Maddon in the chess match of pinch hitters, relief pitchers, pinch runners, and squeeze bunts that make these types of games so riveting.

So the Tigers will leave Tampa with another series win, transfering even more pressure to the Twins who still trail in the division by six games. If the Tigers play 0.500 baseball, the Twins must win all of their series to catch them. If the Tigers win their series, the Twins must be virtually perfect the rest of the way.

The Tigers are doing whatever is required in order to take care of business, even if it means the anemic offense must shoulder the load from time to time. These Tigers are looking less like the de facto winners of a weak Central Division and more like a contending playoff team.

Michigan-Western Michigan: Battle of I-94 Preview

Matt and Zac Snyder of Bleacher Report and mittensportsreport.com break down this week's University of Michigan football matchup.

When Michigan has the ball...

Michigan's passing attack vs. Western's defensive backs

Zac says: This match-up is the battle of inexperience. Michigan will play two true freshmen at quarterback, while Western Michigan looks to replace Louis Delmas and E.J. Biggers in their defensive backfield.

Michigan returns some experience at receiver with Greg Matthews outside and Martavious Odoms in the slot. If Michigan signal callers can find the open man, it could spell trouble for Western. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: Quarterback play is where you'll likely find the biggest difference between this year's and last year's Michigan squad. While Steven Threet and Nick Sheridan weren't ideal for Rich Rodriguez' spread offense (I'm not counting on much from Sheridan this season), Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson are perfect fits.

The threat of speed from the Wolverine quarterbacks should keep the Western Michigan defense honest. I expect some open space for the relatively experienced Michigan receivers in a Bronco secondary that lost two key members to the NFL draft. Advantage: Michigan

Michigan's running game vs. Western's front seven

Zac says: Michigan's best chance to show just how much they have improved since last year comes in running the ball. Quarterback Denard Robinson brings the kind of ground threat that Steven Threet and Nick Sheridan could not provide last year.

Running back Brandon Minor is questionable for game one but Carlos Brown, Michael Shaw, Vincent Smith, and Kevin Grady are ready to showcase their talents. The Michigan offensive line improved in each game last season and figures to take a major step forward in year two. Advantage: Michigan

Matt says: The running game should prove to be one of the great strengths of the Maize and Blue this season. Even if Minor is unable to play, Carlos Brown et al. should prove to be more than capable to handle the load against Western Michigan. The Broncos defense only returns three starters so look for the Wolverine backs (and quarterbacks) to expose the inexperience. Advantage: Michigan

When Western Michigan has the ball...

Western's passing attack vs. Michigan's defensive backs

Zac says: Western's best chance for success is to attack through the air. Tim Hiller is one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. The Hiller lead passing attack finished 2008 as the Mid-American Conference's best after averaging nearly 300 yards per game.

Michigan will need solid play from inexperienced safeties Troy Woolfolk, Michael Williams, Vlad Emilien, and Jared Van Slyke if they expect to slow down the potent Western offense. Advantage: Western Michigan

Matt says: Bronco QB Tim Hiller will be playing in the NFL somewhere next year and he'll be ready to showcase his talent against Big Blue. Cornerbacks Donovan Warren and Boubacar Cissoko failed to impress last year, but they'll need to step up big in an otherwise inexperienced secondary if they hope to stop Hiller and company. Advantage: Western Michigan

Western's running game vs. Michigan's front seven

Zac says: Michigan lacks supreme depth up front, but Western Michigan's rushing attack ranked near the bottom of the MAC last season. If the front four can keep from getting pushed around, the Michigan linebackers will have the freedom to make some plays. Obi Ezeh is the clear leader of the group and figures to end the day with a double-digit tackle total. Advantage: Even

Matt says: Western Michigan's senior starting running back Brandon West is a good one, he ran for over 1,000 yards last season, but the Broncos still managed to rank 90 out of 120 in the NCAA (FBS) in rushing yards.

The Michigan defensive line has some question marks (outside of Brandon Graham) and if the linebackers are forced into helping out in pass defense too often, West could find some room to run. Advantage: Western Michigan

Bottom line

Zac says: Western Michigan may be a tougher season-opening opponent than Michigan bargained for. That being said, the events of this week's NCAA violation allegations seemed to bring the Wolverines closer together. I expect a very good performance out of the Maize and Blue as they bring an "us against the world" mentality into 2009. Final Score: Michigan 31, Western Michigan 20

Matt says: Western Michigan over Michigan has become the sexy upset pick for many experts in week one. For others, a Western win may not be considered much of an upset at all. Don't count me in that group, however. Michigan will be a much different team than we saw last season, especially on offense.

The key to the game will be how well the Michigan defensive line performs. If they can be mildly successful at stopping the run and if they can get pressure on Tim Hiller, it could be a good day for the Michigan defense as well. Final Score: Michigan 34, Western Michigan 17

U-M Commit Devin Gardner Flashes Brilliance in Inkster Loss to East Kentwood

It took Inkster (MI) quarterback Devin Gardner exactly eight seconds to wow the East Kentwood (MI) crowd. On the Vikings first play from scrimmage, Gardner got pressure from the East Kentwood defense so he pulled the ball down and took off down field.

He didn't stop until he crossed the goal line 66 yards later.

But the evening didn't continue with such ease for Gardner and the Inkster Vikings. The offensive line struggled to consistently keep East Kentwood defenders from hurrying many of Gardner's pass attempts—many of which were forced into coverage.

Gardner didn't get too much help from his receivers either. On two occasions in the first half, Gardner heaved up nice touch passes to the end zone only to see the ball slip through teammates fingertips and fall harmlessly to the turf.

The receivers finally did step up though, and Gardner was able to add three touchdowns through the air in a 19-30 passing performance. But the Viking defense could do nothing to stop the East Kentwood offense and the Falcons went on to win the game 52-33.

Gardner, a scout.com five-star recruit, showed that he has all of the physical tools needed to succeed at the next level. He was easily the best athlete on the field tonight and he showcased it on the 66-yard touchdown run. When the pocket collapsed, he stepped up and once he decided to run, he was gone. One, maybe two, defenders laid a single hand on him and he simply made the rest miss on his way to the endzone.

As far as the passing game goes, Gardner impressed me with his ability to put some nice touch on the ball, when given the time to do so. He showed good arm strength, but he relied on it too frequently, sacrificing mechanics and forcing the ball into coverage when he was hurried.

I didn't get the feeling that Gardner could step in and contribute for a big time program like Michigan right away, but if Devin's willing to put in the work at the college level, there's no question he could turn into a special talent for the Wolverines.

Aubrey Huff Makes Cameo Appearance for Tigers in Win Over Indians

It took 15 days, but Aubrey Huff’s bat finally arrived in Detroit in time for Tuesday’s game against the Indians. In four plate appearances, Huff (2-for-2, R, three RBI) managed to double his offensive output since joining the Tigers.

It was the trade that everyone said the Tigers needed make to stay afloat in the division and the Tigers eventually went ahead and made it. But even without any help from Huff in his first half-month in a Detroit uniform, the Tigers managed to remain exactly where they were when they got him.

A productive Aubrey Huff down the stretch will make the Tigers that much more dangerous, and that much more stable at the top of the division. A productive Huff would provide a huge boost to a lineup that still seems to have more struggles than successes.

But I’m not ready to crown Huff as the savior of the offense just yet. He’ll need to hit with regularity with runners on base, he’ll need to help carry the team when no one seems to be hitting, and he’ll need to do this even when he’s not facing Indians pitching (worst ERA in MLB).

If Huff’s play in the batter’s box can be more than just a one game cameo appearance—and I’m hoping it will—the Tigers should be able to cruise into October.

Aubrey’s numbers were bound to spike at some point, he has too good of a track record to slump for the rest of the season. Let’s hope the slump is over. Let’s hope that this is the Aubrey Huff we see the rest of the way.

Let’s hope Tuesday’s performance was not just a cameo.

Detroit Tigers | Holding Ground in the AL Central

The Tigers as a team haven't exactly wowed us with their play this year, at least not for long consistent stretches of the season, but they have been good enough. In fact, that would be a good catch phrase for this year's team.

Detroit Tigers: We're good enough.

It's an interesting place for this team to be, good enough. If I had to peg good enough I'd say it's in between running away with it and close, but no cigar. Probably a shade closer to close, but no cigar.

You might think that a first place team with legitimate MVP and Cy Young candidates would be closer to running away with it, but with September looming, good enough seems good enough for me.

But the Tigers know all too well that good enough is all it takes to win it all. The 2006 version of the St. Louis Cardinals were one of those good enough teams. Their 83-78 record was good enough to carry the NL Central that year and the Cardinals eventually took down our Tigers in the World Series.

So here the Tigers sit on the eve of September, in first place with as much of a cushion as they've had, holding their ground. And that's all they really need to do—86 wins should take the division. Playing one game above .500 will get the Tigers to 86 wins (17-16 down the stretch) and the Twins would need to manage 21-11 to tie (forget the Sox, they're done).

With seven games remaining versus the Twins the Tigers sit in a position of luxury. The two series will be billed as the biggest of the season, but no pressure should sit on the Tigers. Even a 3-4 record against the Twins shouldn't harm the Tigers in their quest to win the division.

The Twins would need to manage 5-2 before anything interesting would actually happen, but with four of the seven games taking place in Detroit, that seems unlikely.

So the Tigers simply must do what they've been doing since they took over first place back in the spring, hold their ground. As long as we don't see a slump, they won't need a big winning streak.

And that would be good enough for me.

Daunte Culpepper-Scott Linehan Connection Much Ado About Nothing in Detroit

The debate rages on in Detroit. The decision to name either Daunte Culpepper or Matthew Stafford as the starting quarterback for the Lions is a difficult one, to be sure, but everyone seems to be an expert on the topic.

It just might be impossible to tune into sports talk radio for five minutes anywhere in the Mitten State without hearing someone's opinion on the matter. That’s why I find sports talk radio so frustrating at times—opinions are tossed around indiscriminately, but some hold little water.

Here's one from the Stafford camp: "If the Lions are paying him $42 million, they better play him."

The reality is Stafford will get his money whether it's him or Culpepper winning (or losing) the games. Bad things happen when you let payroll decide your depth chart.

But I think even worse than the Stafford money argument is the Culpepper-Linehan connection.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the situation, Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan ran the offense in Minnesota from 2002-2004 with Culpepper as his starting quarterback. During Linehan's reign as Vikings offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Culpepper saw vast improvement leading up to the best year of his career in 2004.

The Culpepper camp often cites this fact as a reason that Daunte should be under center for the Lions this season.

The argument sounds good, doesn't it? Linehan and Culpepper reunite to draw some plays in the sand and the Lions win games, right?

Maybe.

A lot has happened since Culpepper and Linehan were split apart after the 2004 season. Culpepper sustained severe knee damage during a game in 2005, causing him to miss the remainder of the season and eventually much of the next season. He retired after bouncing from Minnesota to Miami to Oakland, unable to hold down a spot.

During retirement, Daunte’s weight ballooned to near 300 pounds, a far cry from his Pro Bowl playing days.

After all this, would Scott Linehan really be the reason Culpepper succeeds in Detroit? Daunte rehabbed the knee, and Daunte lost the weight—he's now back down to around 260 pounds. If Culpepper is successful in Detroit this year, it will be because of all the work he put in to try to once again be that player.

Culpepper was a Pro Bowler in 2000, while Linehan was coaching at the University of Louisville. The worst full season of Culpepper's career came in 2002, under Linehan.

To me, it seems Culpepper's career success (and failure) has more to do with himself and his own abilities and less to do with his offensive coordinator.

When it comes to Culpepper versus Stafford, the best player should play. Throw out salary figures and throw out coaching connections; the decision needs to be made based upon who is making the best decisions and best throws on the field.

Latest Detroit Tigers Lineup Is an Oldie But Goodie

Jim Leyland harkened back to yesteryear for an oldie-but-goodie blast from the past Tiger lineup last night.

Magglio Ordonez was once again slotted to hit in the three spot.

Granderson, Polanco, Ordonez, Cabrera—it was the original plan of attack for the Tigers’ offense this year and it may have become the best option for the remainder of the season.

The plan originally faltered when Ordonez struggled so mightily in that spot for much of the season’s first half. His power was gone, but even worse his average was way down. At times one would almost hope for a strikeout because contact would inevitably be turned into a double play.

But help did not arrive once Magglio was plucked from his perch. Clete Thomas was the heir to the position, but he’s only hit .212 as the Tigers’ No. 3 batter.

Magglio’s not the same hitter he was when he was deep in his slump. The power is still gone to be sure, but after some batting stance and approach tweaks he’s making better contact. In no way does anyone expect Ordonez to return to his former glory—the home runs and many of the doubles are gone—but he’s been getting on base.

The .318 batting average and 0.400 on-base percentage he’s posted in the second half are second only to Miguel Cabrera (and rookie Alex Avila if you’re counting him). With Cabby hitting behind him, Ordonez will not be counted on to drive in runs—Cabrera can do plenty of that himself if guys get on base in front of him.

Fans in Detroit have become obsessed with Magglio. We were obsessed with his hair, we were obsessed when he slumped, and we’re obsessed with his contract situation. The Tigers should be happy to return him to the heart of the order, happy to give him at bats, and happy to allow his 2010 option to vest.

The decision to return Magglio to the three hole was a good one, and not only because the Tigers won last night, but because Magglio is one of the Tigers’ best hitters.

Jarrod Washburn and Aubrey Huff, I'm Calling You Out

I know Jarrod Washburn's only been in Detroit for a month. I realize Aubrey Huff only got to town a week ago.

But that doesn't change the fact that the Tigers need them to perform at a high level.

Oh yeah, and I mean right now.

Jarrod Washburn was brought in to shore up a pitching staff that was being counted on to carry the team into the playoffs. What's he done so far? He's posted a 0-1 record with a 6.04 ERA in four starts.

It's time for Jarrod to dial it in. And I don't mean just start pitching better, Luke French was doing that, he needs to start recording wins, and fast.

Aubrey Huff was acquired to drive in runs. The Tigers offense had been scuffling all year and Huff was hitting .324 with runners in scoring position. How's he done as a Tiger? He's hitting at a .133 clip (0-5 with RISP) with a single RBI.

I'm not naive enough to think that this is how they'll perform the rest of the season, they're both bound to play better, I just hope they understand that these games count.

Toto, I have the feeling they're not in Kansas anymore.

This isn't Seattle. This isn't Baltimore.

The Tigers are in the midst of a division race and every game—every win matters.

Washburn and Huff were brought here to do a job, and they need to start doing it.

Tigers Acquire Aubrey Huff: So What?

The Detroit Tigers have reportedly sent Brett Jacobson to Baltimore in exchange for Aubrey Huff.

Huff (.253, 13 HR, 72 RBI), has spent time with Tampa Bay, Houston, and Baltimore and has played first base, third base, and right field.

So what does this mean for the Tigers down the stretch?

Miguel Cabrera has the first base position locked up but Huff is more than adequate with the glove should Cabrera need a rest or, knock on wood, get injured.

Huff could see some time at third base if the skipper decides Brandon Inge’s knees need rest, but his defensive ability at the hot corner probably more closely resembles that of Ryan Raburn.

Huff last played in the outfield in 2006. He could possibly see some games out there, but to me Clete Thomas, Raburn, and Magglio Ordonez are all better options defensively. I may even throw Marcus Thames’ name in there.

Huff was available well before the waiver deadline passed which means he’s one of those “DH type” players Dave Dombrowski didn’t think the Tigers needed at the time.

So where does Huff fit in with the Tigers now? (Save the batting average jokes)

He fits in at DH, of course.

It appears that Carlos Guillen may once again be physically able to play in the field so his return to the outfield could come soon, opening the DH spot for Huff.

If I was allowed to make decisions concerning the Tiger’s lineup, I’d elect to hit Huff against right handed pitchers and Thames against the lefties. I’d also never allow Clete Thomas to hit in the three spot but, alas, that’s a different article.

The Tigers will have to make a move to open up a space on the 25 man roster for Huff. Again, if it were up to me I would send Raburn down to Toledo, but Mr. Leyland loves Raburn so I’m guessing Thomas hits the road.

The Tigers really needed a hitter. One who hit for power and for average would have been preferable, but for now, I’ll take the power.

Let’s be realistic about this one. Huff isn’t going to guarantee a playoff spot for the Tigers this year, but a little more run production will certainly help.

“Medium Ball” Not Working Out For Detroit Tigers

You’ve probably heard of teams playing small ball. It’s the offensive strategy whereby stolen bases and sacrifice hits advance runners and sacrifice flies drive in runs. Extra base hits are not a requirement in this system.

You’ve definitely heard of long ball. Long ball is a reference to a home run, or an offense that’s centered around home runs and extra base hits.

The Tigers’ offensive strategy cannot be pegged into one of these two holes. It’s stranded somewhere in between. You see, the Tigers offense posses some characteristics of each one. Unfortunately, the run scoring aspect of either one is missing.

Detroit is very good at moving runners along the base paths. Only the Seattle Mariners have recorded more sacrifice hits in the American League this year. But the Tigers are not a small ball team. They struggle mightily with the art of the sacrifice fly, only the Kansas City Royals have fewer.

It just doesn’t do any good to get a runner to third base if you don’t score him.

On the other hand, the Tigers aren’t a bad home run hitting team, they’re very average. In fact, they’re tied for seventh in the American League in homers. But runs aren’t coming this way. Despite relative home run success, the Tigers have failed at stringing together extra base hits; the Tigers rank third to last in that category.

So what is this “medium ball” that the Tigers are playing?

It’s been advancing runners to scoring position, then leaving them marooned. It’s been hitting a solo home run, then whiffing with runners on.

It’s been the worst of both worlds.

But the Tigers are trying to mix things up. Wilkin Ramirez was called up for a game, then sent back down. Dusty Ryan has been sent to Toledo and Alex Avila’s contract has been purchased from Erie. Will we see Scott Sizemore next?

The Tigers are getting a good look at some of their top prospects–searching for that one piece that may spark the offense. I’m not sure that the true answer lies in the Detroit farm system, but I’m equally unsure that a move will be made to bolster the lineup from outside the organization.

The one thing I am sure of is this brand of “medium ball” isn’t working.

Detroit Tigers: 10 Things I Hate About You

I hate the way they're losing games. I hate that they can't score.
I hate that they can't hit in the clutch. I hate when pitching's poor.

I hate that they didn't get a bat, what it seemed they needed most.
I hate that they seem so tame when other teams play host.

I hate the many bad contracts -- not one, but three or four.
I hate that we don't seem to know who's in or out the door.

I hate the way that I can't hate them very much at all.
I hate that it's so gosh-darn cold in Detroit in late fall.
Begin Slideshow

When It Comes To PED's In Baseball, Two Lies Don't Make The Truth

The New York Times reported today that Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2003.

I think it’s a shame.

It’s a shame that so many players were “using”. It’s a shame that these players felt the need to continually lie about it.

But even more than these, it’s a shame that Major League Baseball lied to the player’s union.

Baseball had a drug problem, and a big black eye to show for it. Fans screamed for testing—longing for baseball to return to the pure game they once knew. Writers screamed for testing—longing to scream at someone, for anything.

In 2003, the players union and the league office agreed to an anonymous survey test of 1,438 major league athletes. And of these 1,438 players, somewhere between five and seven percent tested positive—that’s somewhere between 72 and 100 players. Mandatory testing was to begin the following year, and the results of the tests were to be destroyed to preserve the anonymity of the players.

But the results were never destroyed, and the names of the players are no longer anonymous. In an effort to fix one problem, baseball has created another one.

To me, it’s an issue of trust, integrity, and good old-fashioned family values.

I know some of the players cheated—I’m not letting them off the hook for that. I know some of the players lied—I bemoan that, as well. But that doesn't give the league office permission to lie.

Whatever trust existed between the league and the players is now gone. This test wasn't something that the union wanted to do, but they consented for “the good of the game.” No longer will the player’s union of Major League Baseball—or any other sport, for that matter—consent to such a survey.

No matter how interesting it may be to me, personally, to find out who tested positive I will never call for the names to be made public. Truth begotten by lies is not a truth that I want to take part in.

With every public release of a name, the commissioner’s office is turned into a den of liars—that’s not for the good of the game.

To me, that's the real shame of the situation.

Detroit Tigers: Mission Accomplished

Okay, so maybe the headline is a tad extreme.

There's still plenty of baseball left to play this year, but I can't shake the feeling that the Tigers did accomplish something great this weekend—even with one game still to play.

This series was billed as a big one—the biggest of the season to date. The White Sox were fresh off of Mark Buehrle's perfect game and seemed to be streaking just as hard as the Tigers were slumping.

The South Siders planned on strolling into Comerica Park, shutting down the Tigers seemingly weak lineup, and sneaking back out with the division lead. They must have forgotten the age-old parable:

"In fact, no one can enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessionsunless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can rob his house." (Mark 3:27, NIV)

Comerica Park is still a place of strength for the Olde English D and, though the White Sox tried, they couldn't quite tie up the Tiger's lineup.

I honestly didn't think the Tigers had it in them going into the weekend; they surprised me by sporting a brand of ball that I hadn't seen out of them in some time.

Friday afternoon saw the Tigers play small ball. There was a sacrifice fly, stolen bases, and even a squeeze play. I didn't recognize that team.

Friday night and Saturday saw that Tigers claw back into the game after surrendering the lead.

They finally hit (and walked) in the clutch.

Speaking of clutch hitting, Carlos Guillen has made his presence known so far this weekend. He's hit .417 with a home run and three runs batted in three games since returning from injury.

We're all hoping Carlos can be that consistent bat that our beloved Tigers have been missing all season.

I know there's still a long way to go but the Tiger's needed this series win—I needed this series win.

It may seem premature to you, but I'll say it again: mission accomplished.

Now I think I know how President Bush must have felt.

Detroit Tigers: Weekend Update, July 24, 2009

Looking back

Let's call it what it was; it was a stinkin' miserable, downright awful week for the Olde English D. Two winnable series were lost, and the division lead vanished. Poof. Gone.

The offense was to blame.

Sure, they garnered nine runs in the lone win but only managed to plate seven in the remaining five.

Poor.

Friday @ New York: Jim Leyland allowed Joel Zumaya to waste a great start from Lucas French. (L, 5-3)

Saturday @ New York: Justin Verlander was more than solid, but the run support never came. (L, 2-1)

Sunday @ New York: Edwin Jackson was outstanding, but the run support never came. (L, 2-1)

Tuesday vs. Seattle: The offense exploded early, and the Tigers held off a late Seattle rally. (W, 9-7)

Wednesday vs. Seattle: Armando Galarraga surrendered only one hit, but the run support never came. (L, 2-1)

Thursday vs. Seattle: Luke French pitched five strong innings, but the run support never came. (L, 2-1)

One has to wonder if Rick Porcello received the stink eye from his fellow starters. He recorded the lone win as the lone Tiger starter to surrender more than two runs.

No gold star will be awarded this week.

Looking forward

With the standins locked at the top it's only fitting that the White Sox should come into town this weekend.

I'm hoping it's not do-or-die time for the Tigers, but a series losses against Chicago could cripple the clubhouse morale.

You don't need me to tell you this series is big.

Friday vs. Chicago (Game 1): Justin Verlander (10-5, 3.34) vs. Jose Contreras (4-8, 4.75)

Friday vs. Chicago (Game 2): Eddie Bonine (0-0, 9.00) vs. Bartolo Colon (3-6, 4.23)

Saturday vs. Chicago: Edwin Jackson (7-5, 2.52) vs. Gavin Floyd (8-6, 4.40)

Sunday vs. Chicago: Rick Porcello (9-6, 4.40) vs. John Danks (8-6, 3.98)

Detroit will miss seeing Mark Buehrle, and that's a very good thing. The four guys the Sox will throw out there are all very capable pitchers, but they are all hittable too. The Tigers don't want to get to the ninth inning and allow Bobby Jenks to close them down.

If I was a Tiger I would be salivating at the thought of playing Texas again. The boys are 6-0 against the Rangers on the year, with all six games at Comerica Park.

Let's hope the success continues in Arlington.

Monday @ Texas: Armando Galarraga (5-8, 4.82) vs. Tommy Hunter (2-1, 2.17)

Tuesday @ Texas: Luke French (1-1, 2.22) vs. Vincente Padilla (7-5, 4.67)

Wednesday @ Texas: Justin Verlander (10-5, 3.34) vs. Scott Feldman (8-3, 3.87)

Six games in seven days is enough to wear down any team but the Tigers can ill afford to relax. I think the goal for this week should be a split with Chicago and two of three in Texas.

Looking around

Here's what the AL Central looks like right now.

Detroit (49-44) next four opponents: CWS (4), @ TEX (3), @ CLE (3), BAL (4)

Chicago (50-45) next four opponents: @DET (4), @ MIN (3), NYY (4), LAA (3)

Minnesota (48-47, 2 GB) next four opponents: @ LAA (3), CWS (3), LAA (3), @ CLE (3)

The upcoming schedule sets up well for Detroit. If the Tigers can survive the Sox this weekend, they should be in good shape. Texas, Cleveland, and Baltimore are all beatable teams for Detroit. Chicago, on the other hand, must face Minnesota, the Yankees, and Angels.

News, notes, and nonsense

The Tigers sent scouts to check out A's slugger Matt Holliday, but new reports say talks between Oakland and St. Louis are heating up.

Dontrelle Willis works toward another comeback from his anxiety disorder

Mark Buehrle throws the 17th perfect game in MLB history—the second no-hitter of his career

Carlos Guillen is 4-7 at the plate in two games with AAA Toledo.

Eddie Bonine will be called up from Toledo after game one of the doubleheader to start in game two.

That's all for this week. Hopefully next week brings better news (and maybe a new bat for the lineup).
