End of an Era: Bud Selig Stepping Down After 2012 Season?

Could it be? Could the prayers of many baseball executives, players, and fans across the country finally becoming true?

According to a report from Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune , longtime Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig plans to step down after the 2012 season.

Since becoming commissioner of the league in 1992, Selig has had his good moments and moments he'd rather forget.

He introduced the Wild Card, interleague play, revenue sharing, and implemented the most stringent drug-testing program in any of the four major sports in North America.

There was also a report that Selig was "seriously considering" re-instating Pete Rose ealier this year in the New York Daily News . But those rumors died when Selig didn't believe Rose was "reconfiguring" his life.

Unfortunately, what Selig may be more well known for is his blunder during the 2002 All Star Game.

With the score tied in the 11th and both sides out of pitchers, the umpires met with Selig, who was seated down the right field line. After a few minutes, Selig decided to end the game with a tie, sending fans into a frenzy and they let him know about by booing him out of the stadium.

He also went through highs and lows during home run chases by Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds, getting flak from a lot of fans to add an asterisk to Bonds' record because of his alleged use of steroids and other banned substances.

What Selig's legacy is remains to be seen, but the last few years of his tenure will be known for the last days of Barry Bonds and the All Star Game fiasco.

But he may be better known for instituting home field advantage for the winner of the All Star Game. Something players and fans alike did not agree with from the very start.

San Diego Padres, Dick Enberg Possibly Talking About Return to Booth?

The San Diego Padres need a change of style in their television booth, a name that could bring the team more notoriety and bring fans back to the team .

According to Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union Tribune, that name could be Hall of Fame announcer, and San Diego resident, Dick Enberg.

Sullivan writes in his article that Enberg had coffee back in August with Padres President Tom Garfinkel at Harry's Coffee Shop in La Jolla.

When asked about it, Enberg played it down, calling it more of a "flirtation," but told Sullivan “if they're interested, I'm interested,"

San Diego currently has their lead TV man in Mark Neely, currently going into his second year in the Padres' booth. For the Padres to comment on the possibility of bringing in Enberg would be unfair to a guy that's just getting his feet wet with the team.

But, if you're the Padres, how could you not entertain the idea of Enberg being the voice of the team?

They already have long time, and colorful, play-by-play announcer Ted Leitner on the radio side of it, why not add another well known voice on the TV side of things?

Enberg is certainly taking the high road as is the Padres' brass. When reached for comment, team CEO Jeff Moorad told Sullivan,“We're fortunate to have a number of talented broadcasters on television and radio, but in fairness, it's an area of the business that we are currently evaluating.”

Not exactly a denial of interest from the club's top man.

Channel 4 Vice President Craig Nichols told Sullivan the same thing as Moorad.

“All I can say is that there's a new ownership group and they want to sit down and evaluate things and make sure it fits with their vision,” Nichols said.

Again, not exactly a denial that the Padres' ownership group isn't looking to change the team's image.

“I think any announcer that loves baseball would certainly relish the opportunity to be the voice of the team in the town where he resides,” Enberg told Sullivan. “But I'm fully employed by CBS. At this point, it's pie in the sky. . .  I think it's inappropriate to make more of it than that now.”

The Padres would be foolish not to be return the flirtations of the long time broadcaster. Adding Dick Enberg would give the Padres a name that would rival long time Los Angeles Dodgers' broadcaster Vin Scully.

It would give San Diego the kind of national attention they've been craving for so long. It would lessen the opinion that no one knows a thing about them, that they're a team that plays in some sleepy little town on the west coast.

But, for now, a flirtatious relationship is all it's going to be.

But once both the Padres and Channel 4 meet, flirting could turn into a full fledged relationship.

San Diego Padres Notes: Mike Cameron, Kevin Correia, Chase Headley

With the Winter Meetings just around the corner, the San Diego Padres are in a position to possibly make a few moves to turn this team into a contender in the National League's West Division.

The payroll may not reach more than $40 million next season, but new general manager Jed Hoyer admitted that they may have some wiggle room to sign one or two free agents.

One of those players could be outfielder Mike Cameron, a guy who's already had one stint with the team (2006-07) and was a fan favorite. Bringing him back will definitely give the team more veteran leadership along with second baseman David Eckstein, pitcher Chris Young, and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

Cameron hit .255 with 43 home runs and 161 runs batted in during his two seasons with San Diego. The one problem that has been consistent for him has been his numerous strikeouts, totalling 302 while with the Padres.

What he does bring to the table is tremendous speed both in the outfield as well as on the base paths. Cameron showed that off by covering more ground in center field than the Padres had seen in recent memory, making several incredible catches in Petco Park's vast outfield.

Signing Cameron would benefit the Padres in a big way, regardless of his strikeout problems. When he does make contact and when he is on the base paths, he gives the Padres that extra speed threat next to young shortstop Everth Cabrera.

If Cameron is willing to sign a one year deal in the range of $1 to $2 million, it would be a deal the Padres should sign if in fact they are interested in bringing him back.

With Cameron possibly being the only free agent they could sign, the team will turn their attention to the players currently under contract.

Signing Cameron creates a log jam in the outfield that will force San Diego to look at who they currently have on the roster.

San Diego currently has Chase Headley, Kyle Blanks, Tony Gwynn Jr., and Will Venable occupying three outfield positions. Neither Headley nor Blanks are natural outfielders, but both have picked it up with surprising results.

The Padres love what Kyle Blanks, a natural first baseman, brings to the table. The big 6'6" 285 pounder had a rough first half of the season, struggling to the tune of a .159 batting average (7/44) and driving in just three runs.

After the All-Star break, however, the light switch was turned on and Blanks found his stroke. He hit .288 with a .393 on base percentage with ten home runs and 19 runs batted in.

Those numbers will only get better now that Blanks has had a full season under his belt. Knowing that, it could lead the Padres to trade Chase Headley, especially with Kevin Kouzmanoff being the full time third baseman, as he gives the Padres more power than Headley.

That still leaves San Diego with another problem, even if they do trade Chase Headley. Bringing in Cameron as a full-time player means you have Tony Gwynn Jr and Will Venable who have earned their playing time. So what do you do with Kyle Blanks?

Though it's a good problem for this team to have, the Padres' front office would much rather give Blanks the playing time instead of having him split time with Cameron.

Kevin Correia, a guy that became the team ace after the injury to Chris Young and the trading of Jake Peavy, handled the role with finesse.

The 29 year old right-hander finished the 2009 season with a 12-11 record with a 3.91 ERA through 198 innings pitched.

Currently arbitration eligible, Correia could earn a sizable raise from his $750,000 salary. Taking his numbers into consideration, he could be looking at making anywhere between $1.5 million to $2 million next season.

With right-hander Chris Young slated to play the role of the team's ace, Correia most likely will take the second spot in the rotation in front of young pitchers Mat Latos and Clayton Richard.

The Padres used the final month of the season to prove that they could be a force to be reckoned with, winning most of the series they played, including series wins over division rivals in the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.

Going into 2010, the team will be younger than they have been in years. They'll have more talent in the outfield with Gwynn and Venable. More speed on the base paths with Everth Cabrera. Stronger pitching with Mat Latos and Clayton Richard. Better leadership than years passed with David Eckstein and Adrian Gonzalez. And more power in the lineup with Blanks, Venable and Kouzmanoff.

Though most of the critics will tell you that this team is a few years away from being a contender again, they'll surprise more than just the critics, they'll surprise their own division.

The team may be a little slow out of the blocks, as they've never been a good starter, but once this team turns it on in May, they could quickly run away from the field.

Keep their starters healthy, get the kind of production out of Gonzalez that the team is used to, and let their up and coming young stars show what they can bring to the table.

With the kind of talent this team has from top to bottom, not only will the Padres be a contender in the division, but they'll be in the race all season long.

Hot Stove Rumors: Adrian Gonzalez the Focus of Padres-White Sox-Angels Talks

Rumors have been flying about him since the trade deadline last July. Padre fans, as well as the San Diego media, sat on the edge of their seats as the hours and minutes ticked away, wondering if Adrian Gonzalez was about to be traded.

The deadline came, and the news that followed shocked everybody when it was learned that it was Jake Peavy that had been dealt and not Gonzalez.

Now that the offseason is in full swing, the Gonzalez rumors have started to fly once more—though this time they don't involve the Boston Red Sox.

Corey Brock of MLB.com talked about an Internet rumor that came a week ago that might have legs.

According to this rumor, the Padres have been in discussions with the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles (don't call me Anaheim) Angels. The deal would send White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko and a handful of prospects from both teams to San Diego.

Where the Angels come in on this deal is not clear, though they will be looking for a DH once outfielder Vladimir Guerrero hits free agency after this season. They could find that DH in Juan Rivera, opting to keep Gonzalez and his Gold Glove defense at first base.

As for Gonzalez himself, he seems to think that he's in a good position whatever happens.

"If I get to stay here with the Padres and stay in my hometown and live here at home and be with these great fans and great city, then I'm in a winning situation," he told Brock. "If I end up getting traded, I'm getting traded to a team that more than likely will be in the playoffs and will be contending for a World Series title."

There's been no word out of the Padres' camp of the validity of the rumor, though the team has been known to be quiet about potential trades. That was evident when Peavy was traded, as there were no rumors, or any talk at all, that there could be a trade in the works for the right-hander.

The Padres are in the driver's seat with any deal that they are approached with. They are in no way obligated to trade their star first baseman, and they have no problem hanging on to him and possibly working on a long-term extension.

Don't count out the Boston Red Sox in any deal. They made their interest known prior to the deadline last year, and there's no doubt they'll have it on their mind when the Winter Meetings get underway on Dec. 7.

For San Diego, they would have to sell their fans on the players they get in return if they were to trade Gonzalez, the current face of the franchise, especially after the heat the team took after not re-signing Trevor Hoffman and trading Jake Peavy—neither of which went over real well with the Padre fans.

If a deal is made, the Padres would have to be absolutely overwhelmed with the players they'd be getting in return. It's the exact reason a deal wasn't struck before the deadline last season because San Diego wasn't getting back what they wanted.

With Kevin Towers no longer the general manager and Jed Hoyer stepping into his spot, there's no telling what kind of package the new regime will be looking for. One thing is for sure: The team will be all too happy to have Gonzalez on their Opening Day roster.

Ryan Mathews To Decide on Fresno State Senior Year or NFL Career

With one game left in Fresno State's 2009 season, their star running back has an important decision to make. A decision that will either lead him back to the university he's played so well for, or a career on the the biggest stage of his young life.

For Ryan Mathews, this is going to be the most important football decision of his life. A decision that won't come easy and a decision that he will need to make on his own.

The star running back for Pat Hill and Fresno State has been a fan favorite since his freshman year. Ask most of those fans if they want him to stay and you'll get a more than resounding 'yes.'

But if every decision was left up to the fans, some of the best college players would never jump ship to the National Football League; they'd stay seniors their entire career.

Mathews won't deny that the thought hasn't crossed his mind, or that he hasn't talked to coach Hill about it.

"We talked about it," Mathews told Daniel Lyght of the Fresno Bee . "He is going to get evaluations on me and if I'm going to go in the top couple rounds, he's going to tell me to go because it's good money. But if not, I'll just play here another year and have fun."

The way Ryan sees is, until he's drafted by an NFL team, he's still a Bulldog. He wants the focus to be on the team and the game they still have remaining against Illinois this weekend and possibly a post season bowl game.

The possibilities for Mathews seemed to be endless through Fresno State's first nine games. He was leading the nation in rushing, averaging over 150 yards per game, and he was putting up big numbers against teams like Boise State, Wisconsin and Cincinnati.

But there was always one knock against him, his inability to stay healthy, something Mathews hadn't done through his freshman and sophomore seasons with the Bulldogs.

His junior season, however, seemed to be different. People were noticing him, not only in the Central Valley, but also nationally. There was even talk of him possibly being a Heisman Trophy candidate if he continued to put up the kind of numbers he was putting up.

"People say that I'm injury prone and that I'm good, but not good enough," said Mathews. "I just feed off that. I love to prove people wrong."

Mathews had done just that. He had gone through most of the season without injury and looked well on his way to shattering school rushing records.

Then came the game against Nevada and the hit that put the star running back on the shelf.

The hit left Mathews with a concussion and forced him to miss the team's previous game against Louisiana Tech, It could possibly force him to miss the game against Illinois.

That has to be in the back of his mind and it has to be eating him alive. Knowing that he set out to prove people wrong, that he could stay healthy for an entire season. But one play changed all of that and it might have changed his NFL draft status as well.

For now, he'll get ready to spend Thanksgiving with his family before he boards the team plane bound for Champaign and the University of Illinois. Whether he'll play in this weekend's game or not is a decision that could come down to how he's feeling and running on Friday afternoon.

As for the decision to return to Fresno State or turn pro, that will have to wait until after the NFL season comes to a close at the end of January.

After that, it's just a matter of time before Fresno State fans, his coaches and teammates know if he'll be returning for his senior season or whether he'll take the leap to the National Football League.

The pros and cons won't be easy to weigh. He'll need the support from friends and family to make this decision. The biggest question on his mind at this point, is what the right decision is for him and for his future.

The only thing that could force Mathews to make the leap is the future of head coach Pat Hill. According to Matt James of the Fresno Bee, Hill may have coached his last game at Bulldog Stadium.

If that's the case and the university decides to move on without their long time head coach, they'll be moving on without arguably the best running back in Fresno State's history.

San Diego Padres Notes: Adrian Gonzalez, Henry Blanco, Mike Cameron

As the San Diego Padres approach the Winter Meetings under new owner Jeff Moorad and new general manager Jed Hoyer, there are decisions that this team will need to make to shape the 2010 squad.

One decision that the team is already working on is the future of first baseman, and the new face of the franchise, Adrian Gonzalez.

With Trevor Hoffman in Milwaukee and Jake Peavy a member of the Chicago White Sox, the Padres will do everything they can to ensure Gonzalez remains a Padre for years to come.

There was a report from ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick that Hoyer had met with John Boggs, the agent for Gonzalez, to discuss the first baseman's future with the club. But Crasnick was told that it was more of a "getting acquainted session."

"There wasn't any kind of negotiating or exchanging of numbers or anything like that," Boggs told Crasnick. "I'm sure we're going to keep the dialogue open, but nothing is imminent at this point. The way we're looking at it, Adrian is a Padre until something happens. And they're the ones who are really in control of the situation.''

Adrian is owed $10.25MM over the next two seasons and that's assuming the Padres pick up his option for the 2011 season.

Another decision the Padres will mull over prior to the Winter Meetings is bringing back catcher Henry Blanco. Blanco did a nice job not only mentoring young catcher Nick Hundley but also did an adequate job with the Padres' young pitching staff.

Though there's been no official word from the Padres about bringing back Blanco, the White Sox have made their interest in Blanco known, so San Diego will have to compete to bring back the veteran catcher.

The Padres have four arbitration eligible players they will need to take care of prior to next season. Pitchers Heath Bell, Kevin Correia and Mike Adams as well as third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff. All of which may earn up to $12 million, collectively.

Speaking of pitching, it's the one thing that the Padres may not go outside their own club to set their starting rotation.

Chris Young as the team's new ace, young hard throwing right hander Mat Latos and left-hander Clayton Richard seemingly locks for the first three spots. The Padres can decide between Sean Gallagher, Aaron Poreda, Tim Stauffer, Cesar Ramos, and Wade LeBlanc for the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

One name that the Padres could have interest in bringing back is outfielder Mike Cameron, a fan favorite during his first stint with the club in 2006-07. If Cameron is willing to sign a one-year deal with the club, it could be a great addition for San Diego.

The only thing that may keep Cameron from dawning the home blue and white again is still having Chase Headley and Kyle Blanks occupying the left field spot.

The Padres are set in center field, with Tony Gwynn Jr, and right field with Will Venable, so what do you do with the aforementioned Headley and Blanks?

There's a lot of talk that the Padres could trade Headley for another right-handed bat, something this team desperately needs in the lineup. But trading Headley still leaves you with what to do about Kyle Blanks.

The 6'6" 285 lbs Blanks hit .250 last season with 10 home runs, all of which came after the All Star break, and drove in 19 of his 22 runs after that point as well. He has hit some tape measure home runs and has shown the power that the Padres knew he had.

Knowing that, it would lead you to believe that having him in the lineup, along with Adrian Gonzalez, would make this lineup a lot stronger.

San Diego might have a little wiggle room to sign a free agent or two and those signings may or may not come during the winter meetings. The one thing that could happen, though it may be a long shot, is the trading of Adrian Gonzalez to the Boston Red Sox who tried to acquire him at the trade deadline last season before the Padres sent Jake Peavy to the White Sox.

The team has decisions to make and not much time to make them. But Moorad and Hoyer could turn this team into a definite contender. They may make the moves this team couldn't make under former owner John Moores and general manager Kevin Towers.

The jury is still out, but once this team reports to spring training in February, we could see a very different and possibly much better team than that of the 2009 season.

Uphill Battle: Fresno State Faces Life Without Ryan Mathews

Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews will miss his first game all season this weekend against Louisiana Tech after suffering a concussion against Nevada.

You could hear the air come out of the collective breaths of the Fresno State fans. Star running back Ryan Mathews took a hard hit from a Nevada defensive player, then didn't get up.

You could feel every fan's heart drop and the possibilities of a winning season come into question, all with one play.

For the Bulldogs, life with Ryan Mathews had been easy. The nation's leading rusher was making defensive backs look foolish and was putting up Heisman like numbers through nine games. He was every coaches dream.

Now, Fresno State will have to play their final home game of the season on Saturday afternoon without their best player, without their star and without the guy that fans flock to Bulldog Stadium just to see what he'll do next.

But, maybe this is a blessing in disguise for this football team. After relying so heavily on one guy, they'll now have to rely on each other to defeat Louisiana Tech on Saturday afternoon. They'll have to pull together to show their fans that they can win without Mathews. They can still be the same explosive offense without their explosive running back.

To do that, they'll have to rely on a freshman. But he's not just any freshman. He already has fans talking about him as the heir to the proverbial running back throne at Fresno State.

That player is freshman running back Robbie Rouse, or as the fans and his teammates call him, "Mighty Mouse."

Just because he may be a tad on the small side for a running back, 5'6", his size didn't keep him from putting up big numbers in his senior season at Madison High School in San Diego, rushing for 2,632 yards and an astounding 38 touchdowns.

The Bulldogs are in good hands with Rouse, but the team needs to trust itself. They need to pull together as a team and show the fans they can win big games.

They'll need to do just that against a Louisiana Tech team that gave both LSU and Boise State fits, losing both games by a combined 18 points.

Even though the other "Bulldogs" don't have the greatest record (3-7, 2-4) and have lost five of their last six including four straight, it doesn't mean that they can be taken lightly.

Life without Ryan Mathews will be tough, but put the ball in the hands of Rouse as well as senior running back Lonyae Miller and the combination of the two will more than make up for their star's absence.

Heisman Talk: Fresno State's Ryan Mathews Deserving of Prestigious Award

Ryan Mathews has been the perennial 'Bulldog' for this Fresno State team in 2009. He's run around, through and past defenders all season long, to the tune of 1,316 total rushing yards on the season.

The closest to him at this point is Temple's Bernard Pierce. But here's a incredible fact about these two running backs. Pierce currently has 1,211 total rushing yards on 204 carries, 25 more carries than Mathews (179).

So while he racks up more and more fans every week, why have the critics continued to tell him he's not good enough to be considered for one of the highest prizes in college football? What kind of numbers does he have to put up to get noticed?

If you look at ESPN's Experts Poll , Alabama's Mark Ingram and Clemson's C.J. Spiller are listed in front of Mathews.

Ingram is currently seventh in total rushing yards (1,004), 300 yards fewer than Mathews (1,316) in just 26 fewer carries. Spiller isn't even in the top 30 in rushing, currently with 574 total rushing yards on 113 carries. How does that warrant being above the nation's leading rusher?

If you want an even more impressive number on Mathews, his current 164.5 yards per game average is 29.9 yards per game better than the aforementioned Pierce and 34.5 yards per game better than Marshall's Darius Marshall (129.0).

Mathews was asked about all the hype from Fresno State fans, and the "21 For Heisman" T-Shirts being sold, by Steve Cameron of the Merced Sun-Star and Mathews told him he'd rather not listen to any of it.

"Oh, man, I'm not gettin' into all that," Mathews told Cameron. "That's my mom's deal. She's all over those T-shirts. "I don't know how many she got or what she's doing with them, but I'm staying away."

Said by a young player who doesn't buy into all the hype surrounding himself. Concentrating rather on the team's remaining games and opponents.

"The season's not over. We have a big game coming up at Idaho (Saturday) and more tough ones after that. Hopefully, there will be a bowl game. "This isn't exactly time for me to be thinking about any awards, or what happens next year. I've got to worry about the next play."

Though Mathews wants to keep his concentration on what's in front of him and the games that lie ahead for him and the Bulldogs, he will admit that it's hard to ignore everything going on around him.

"Every time I walk across campus, there will be people who recognize me. They'll say things about hoping I stay another year, or please don't leave. That kind of thing. So I'd be crazy to say I'm ignoring everything. How could you?"

If Mathews doesn't want to talk about all the hype surrounding him, then leave to it to the Fresno State fans and those that have noticed what he's been able to do.

To those fans, there's no question that Mathews should be getting at least a little notice in the Heisman race.

Instead, all of the critics will tell you that because he plays for Fresno State and they play in a small conference void of a good team outside Boise State, he doesn't deserve that kind of attention.

If he's able to run for at least 2,200 yards this season, which is entirely possible, his name will be mentioned in same breath with two of the top running backs in college football history.

Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders (2,628) and USC's Marcus Allen (2,342). Not bad company to keep for a running back in a small conference school that sits in the heart of California's Central Valley.

For those fans who use the same old, tired, "he couldn't put up the same numbers in the SEC, Big 10, Big XII or Pac-10," you can save it. The Heisman Trophy Award is given to the best football player in college football for that particular season. Not the best player in the best conference with the best record.

You can argue that all you want, but I'm not going to buy in that "it's the way it is now." It's not what the award was ever meant for, that was until the BCS showed up. Now these "automatic qualifiers" apparently get to tell the other schools that they're not entitled.

Or has college football become so biased that the some computer system, that hasn't watched a single game, decides who wins what award?

Mathews has put up numbers worthy of being in the same conversation as Alabama's Mark Ingram regardless of the fact they play in two different conferences. A player shouldn't be penalized, or awarded, because of the conference they play in.

For now, Mathews will continue to do what he's done all season. He'll put up the numbers, help his team to victory and instead of taking the credit for himself, he'll always tell you that he has the best offensive line in the country.

No offense to you Alabama fans, but I'll take Ryan Mathews on my team any day of the week.

Less Talk, More Action: Time For Talk Is Over For The San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padre fans are done losing, they're done with empty promises that have yet to be fulfilled. Could things possibly be changing with a new regime coming into their first official off season?

As the baseball season wraps up, with the New York Yankees just one game away from walking away with yet another World Series championship to add to their trophy case, Padre fans watch and wonder when that's going to be their team.

When is it going to be their time to celebrate a World Series Championship not just another NL West crown? When are they going to have a full season to be excited about? When are they going to have that celebration through the streets of downtown San Diego and not just a "we'll get 'em next season," celebration?

These questions are just some of the ones being asked by the Padre fans. They're being asked because they've grown tired of all talk and not much action. But with a new regime in place going into this off season, things could possibly be changing and in a big way.

What we know so far are the players that could be back next season. Guys like Heath Bell, Adrian Gonzalez, David Eckstein, Kevin Kouzmanoff, and more. What we don't know is if any of these guys will actually be in Padre uniforms when the season opens in April of 2010.

There are decisions that need to be made and most of the decisions center around the pitching staff as well as the bullpen. Questions about right hander Chris Young and his ability to stay healthy for a full season, something he hasn't done the past two seasons.

Besides Young and young right hander Mat Latos, who made a name for himself during his fast start after being called up last season, who will round out the third through fifth spots in the rotation? Will Kevin Correia be one of those guys, especially after the kind of year he had for the Padres in 2009?

The outfield is also a point of contention for this team, having four young and talented players that can play the positions. Guys that made a huge impact through the last month and a half of the season.

Kyle Blanks, Chase Headley, Tony Gwynn Jr, and Will Venable are four guys that can be in the lineup on an every day basis. Only problem is, you can only play three of them at any one time.

The odd man out, according to a lot of rumors that have floated around, could be Chase Headley. Headley can play both the outfield and third base but his time at the hot corner hasn't been without defensive struggles. That could lead to the Padres making the tough decision to trade him for a young pitcher or possibly another role player, opting to hang on to current third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff.

Another decision that seems to be another question mark for the 2010 team is who will be the team's full time catcher? It seems like the Padres could re-sign veteran catcher Henry Blanco after impressing the Padres' brass as to how he handled the pitching staff this past season. It doesn't look like the Padres are ready to hand the reigns over to Nick Hundley just yet.

There's a lot to be done before these players report to spring training in February of next year. This team may not look anything like the team that closed out the 2009 season.

Don't be surprised if there are a few trades made and possibly a significant free agent signing before the winter and General Manager's meetings are done.

It could be an interesting off season for the San Diego Padres. But the fans are done with the talk, they want action and that time could be closer than they think.

When Sports Takes a Back Seat to Life

I've learned a hard lesson over the last few days, a lesson that I should always have in my mind. Unfortunately, it took a tragedy to remind me what's really important in life.

So often we turn to sports to get away from whatever is going on in our lives, but there are also times where we hold sports as something more important than those around us.

We watch college games, we watch pro games, taking up most of our weekends sitting in front of the television rooting on our favorite team. Most of the time, we have our closest friends around us for the fun.

I'm no stranger to this routine, often spending at least one day of the weekend watching football with my fiance and some close friends. I'm usually rooting on my hometown Fresno State Bulldogs or the Dallas Cowboys, my fiance's favorite team.

Unfortunately, this past weekend made me really start thinking about what was important, and it took a tragedy to start this train of thought. It took a close friend and his family going through unspeakable pain for me to really sit and put things in perspective.

As my fiance and I were sitting in church, a very close friend motioned to us to follow him. We walked outside the sanctuary, and what we heard next has played like a VCR in my mind over the last 72 hours. His best friend, his brother, had taken his own life.

We were shocked, stunned beyond belief. There were no words to describe the moment, and there still aren't. The family is healing, little by little, but the questions will continue—and some may never be answered.

But after taking a few days to think about it, to ask several questions of why this sort of thing happens to someone, other questions have emerged.

Are sports really as important as we hold them? Do we take our family and friends for granted, thinking we can see them any time? Do we tell the people we love how much we care, or do we just say to ourselves, "I'll call them tomorrow."

For one of my best friends, there is no tomorrow. He didn't even get a chance to tell his brother, "happy birthday."

The lessons I've learned through this have been life-altering. I just wish that it didn't take a tragedy befalling a good family for me to realize it.

As you enjoy football games on the weekend with good friends or family, take time to realize just how grateful you are to have good people around you. You never know when the time will come when you won't have that chance.

Sports will always be there for us to turn to, always constant and never-ending. But rooting for a team only lasts a few hours—family and friends last the rest of our lives.

Report: Jed Hoyer to Be Announced as the New San Diego Padres GM

The San Diego Padres may have hired their new general manager, according to reports out of San Diego, as well as Sports Illustrated .

Former Red Sox senior vice president and assistant GM Jed Hoyer is reportedly the man for the job and the announcement is expected at a press conference in San Diego later today.

ESPN's Peter Gammons, via Twitter , reported that the Red Sox had a goodbye lunch for Hoyer earlier today.

Bulldog Report: Fresno State's Report Card Through Week Six

After losing three straight and racking up just as many turnovers and penalties as they did touchdowns, the Fresno State Bulldogs seem to have turned things around in their last two games. Question is, can they keep this level of play going?

Quarterback Ryan Colburn looked shaky at best in losses to Wisconsin, Boise State, and Cincinnati, throwing as many touchdowns (seven) as he did interceptions (seven). But, against Hawaii and San Jose State, Colburn didn't turn the ball over once.

So how far has this Bulldog team come? Have they gotten better or are they just now starting to hit their stride? Where they're headed is yet to be determined, but we can give their report card for where they've been.

Offense

Through the first four games, there were a lot of questions whether or not quarterback Ryan Colburn was the right guy for the job. After ill-timed interceptions against Wisconsin and Boise State, fans started to wonder if they wouldn't see freshman Derek Carr earlier than planned.

But Colburn has come back to have very efficient games against conference foes Hawaii and San Jose State. Connecting on two touchdown passes in each of the two games and showing the kind of leadership Pat Hill and company knew was inside him.

And then there's running back Ryan Mathews. There's not much you can say about this 5'11" junior out of Bakersfield West High School that hasn't already been said. Mathews currently leads the nation in not only total rushing yards (974) but also yards per game average (162.3). On top of that, he has four touchdown runs of 55-yards or more.

Lastly, their offensive line has been doing a great job not only opening up holes for Mathews but they've only given up eight sacks all year.

Grade: B-

Defense

This team on defense is a completely different story from their offense. While the Fresno State offense is putting up 36.5 points per game, their defense is giving up 25.2.

Where they're getting hurt is in their secondary. Quarterbacks like Boise State's Kellen Moore and Cincinnati's Tony Pike have taken advantage to the tune of six combined touchdown passes between the two.

That's the biggest hole in this team thus far and it needs to be fixed soon if they're going to survive Utah State and Idaho who have two of the top passing offenses in the conference.

Grade: C-

MVP : Ryan Mathews

Is there really a question here? Junior running back Ryan Mathews has been nothing short of amazing this season. After his 233 rushing yard performance against San Jose State last weekend, it marked the sixth straight game of 100 or more rushing yards and the second time this season that he's reached 200 or more rushing yards in a single game.

He leads the nation in total rushing yards (974) and rushing yards per game average (162.3).

Grade: A

Team Overall

I've been more impressed with this team over the last two games than I was through their first four. The one thing they need to alleviate is the number of penalties. Their seven penalties against San Jose State last weekend marked the fourth time this season they've been penalized five or more times in a game.

Offensively, the passing game needs to get better and that needs to start with quarterback Ryan Colburn. Fresno State has the second worst passing offense in the conference (181.5) ahead of New Mexico State (112.3). They're also dead last in pass attempts per game (23.7).

They can't expect running backs Ryan Mathews and Robbie Rouse to carry this team all season long. Yes, they have so far but the more you ride these guys the less effective they'll be towards the end of the season.

Grade: C+

WAC Preview: Ryan Mathews and Fresno State Face San Jose State

Fresno State (2-3, 1-1) will continue their WAC regular season schedule as they welcome in the Spartans of San Jose State (1-4, 0-1) on Saturday.

The Bulldogs boast the nation's second leading rusher in junior running back Ryan Mathews who trails Stanford's Toby Gerhart by just five yards and 29 fewer carries.

Mathews, averaging 148.2 yards per game, rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown last Saturday in Fresno State's 42-17 victory over Hawaii. Those numbers could get significantly higher against San Jose State, who is the worst in the conference in rushing defense giving up 251.4 yards per game.

Fresno State will win if...

They take the momentum from their blowout win over Hawaii into this game. Jump out quickly and don't let up. Don't let San Jose State think they have a chance to win this game.

The Bulldogs pound San Jose State with Ryan Mathews, Robbie Rouse and Lonyae Miller. San Jose State has the conferences worst rushing defense, exploit that early and often. Give Ryan Mathews the ball and let him put up big numbers.

Ryan Colburn continues his passing efficiency. He didn't throw a single interception last weekend against Hawaii, breaking a streak of four straight games with at least one interception. Allowing Ryan Mathews to make his presence known against the Spartans will set up Colburn to get deep passes to wide receivers Seyi Ajirotutu, Chastin West and Devon Wylie.

The defense keeps the San Jose State offense off the field, allowing their offense to wear out San Jose State and put the game away early.

Fresno State will lose if...

They do not establish their running game. If Colburn decides to throw the ball more than he has all season, the Bulldogs will risk getting themselves out of rhythm.

Penalties keep San Jose State drives alive. The Bulldogs have had their problems with penalties in the past, especially against Boise State. Make those same mistakes against San Jose State, allowing the Spartans to take advantage, it could spell trouble for Fresno State.

The Bulldogs can't protect the football. They fumbled twice against Hawaii last weekend and they need to do a better job protecting the football. Giving San Jose State good field position could allow them more points than they should be getting.

Prediction: Fresno State 51 San Jose State 21

Bulldog Romp: Breaking Down Fresno State's Blowout Win Over Hawaii

What is usually a back and forth battle turned into a one sided affair on Saturday as the Fresno State Bulldogs were never challenged in a 42-17 romp over the Hawaii Warriors at Aloha Stadium.

In a game this team needed to win, they did the things they needed to do to get a much needed conference victory.

Fresno State only committed one penalty

Something that has killed this team over the last three weeks has been the number of penalties being called against them. But, against Hawaii, the Bulldogs were only called for one penalty to Hawaii's seven.

No interceptions by quarterback Ryan Colburn

Something else that has plagued this team is the ill-timed interceptions by Fresno State quarterback Ryan Colburn. However, against Hawaii, Colburn didn't throw a single interception while throwing two touchdown passes.

Colburn finished the game 12/14 for 120 yards, the two touchdown passes were both 17 yard strikes. One to Devon Wylie and one to Chastin West, both came in the second quarter.

Fresno State used the running game to their advantage

Fresno State got rushing touchdowns from three different running backs. Lonyae Miller, Ryan Mathews and freshman Robbie Rouse each had a rushing touchdown, Rouse would finish the day with two rushing touchdowns on the night.

Mathews and Rouse carried the brunt of load, combining for 222 of Fresno State's 277 rushing yards and three of the team's four rushing touchdowns. Mathews, averaging 148 yards per game, finished the night with 149 yards on 24 carries.

Defense held Hawaii to just three points through three quarters

There was a lot of talk about how Hawaii quarterback Brett Moniz, replacing injured Greg Anderson, was going to perform and Fresno State did a great job holding off the Hawaii offense.

Moniz did have a respectable game in his first start, the former Fresno City College standout finished with 283 yards passing on 24-of-52 passing and two touchdown passes, both coming in the fourth quarter when the game was already out of reach.

Surprised that Derek Carr didn't get more playing time

With the game already out of reach by the end of the third quarter, I'm surprised freshman quarterback Derek Carr didn't get more playing time. Though Carr did get some time on the field (2-of-3 15 yards), I would think the Bulldogs' coaching staff would give him more game experience.

We could see more of Carr next week when Fresno State returns home and welcomes in the Spartans of San Jose State.

Next up for Fresno State

The Bulldogs will return to Bulldog Stadium to face the San Jose State Spartans (1-4) who are just coming off a 29-25 shootout loss at home to Idaho.

Fresno State Football: Glaring Questions Plague 2009 Squad

Through four games this season, Fresno State seems to have more questions than answers. Is Ryan Colburn really the answer at quarterback? Will Bulldog fans see freshman Derek Carr before the season is out and how long will Pat Hill be the head coach at Fresno State?

These questions and who he picked between LSU and Florida were addressed with Paul Loeffler, the voice of the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Todd Kaufmann: Through the first four games of the 2009 season, how do you sum up this team so far?

Paul Loeffler: That's a tough one. I think the team still has a solid mentality, good leadership, and all the components required for a strong finish. It's so natural to say, "What if..." with the season so far. The Dogs were close to some really big wins and were just a play or two away three weeks in a row. I think their best days are ahead, and I think they're capable of winning every game left on their schedule.

Todd Kaufmann: Ryan Mathews has been nothing short of spectacular for Fresno State, leading the nation in rushing after their game against Cincinnati, but he
has gotten absolutely no national respect. Would you call him the most
underrated running back in college football?

Paul Loeffler: I don't know if he's the most underrated, but he is every bit as dangerous as some of the backs who get a little more publicity. Assuming he stays healthy, he will continue to put up big numbers, and should have a real good shot of leading the nation in rushing and setting a school record in the process. If he goes over 100 yards against Hawaii, which I expect him to do, he'll tie the school record Wendell Mathis set for consecutive 100-yard games with five. It's hard to find a weakness in his game right now, and he's unselfish to boot.

Todd Kaufmann: Another running back that Bulldog fans have gotten a chance to see is freshman Robbie Rouse. Is he another Ryan Mathews or do you think he has the
potential to be even better?

Paul Loeffler: The Mighty Mouse vs. Mathews? It's hard to compare them because they are so different. Mathews leads the nation in big plays (50+ yards), but Rouse is even more adept than Mathews at making something out of nothing. He has that elusive ability that you don't see too often, but can he take the physical pounding that Mathews took with 38 carries against Cincinnati? I guess we don't know that answer yet. I think Rouse will go down as one of the all-time fan favorites in Bulldogland because of that adrenaline you feel when he gets the ball. You never know what he'll do to surprise you next.

Todd Kaufmann: There's been a lot of frustration with quarterback Ryan Colburn through the last three games. Do you think head coach Pat Hill has him on a short
leash and do you think there's a chance we'll see freshman Derek Carr before
the season is over?

Paul Loeffler: I think we will see Derek Carr, but I don't think that when it happens it will necessarily be an indictment of Colburn. Despite some glaring mistakes in key moments, Ryan has played well. He has moved the team down the field, kept drives alive with big plays on third down, and shown the grit and leadership you want in a QB. He's started four games in his career, and three were against teams now in the Top 25. Mistakes happen, and Derek Carr will tell you his brother had some rough moments in his first season as a starter at Fresno State. Derek will get his chance, and who knows, we may even see all three QBs play against Hawaii.

Todd Kaufmann: Speaking of coach Hill, you know as well as I do that fans are frustrated with the lack of an outright WAC title since he took over in 1996. Do you
expect Hill to be the head coach at Fresno State through the rest of his
contract or will there be a time where the university will want to go in a
different direction?

Paul Loeffler: Hill will be the head coach through the rest of his contract, and if this team and the 2010 team perform to their potential, I think he'll be offered an extension.

Todd Kaufmann: Last question...Florida or LSU, who are you picking?

Paul Loeffler: If Tebow is indeed playing, I have to go with the Gators.

Big thanks to Paul Loeffler, voice of the Fresno State Bulldogs. Paul is not only the voice of the Fresno State football team, but also the baseball team who made an improbable run to a National Championship in 2008. He's the author of "Underdogs to Wonderdogs: Fresno State's Road to Omaha and the College World Series Championship."

Lack of Respect Comes With the Territory For the WAC, Mountain West

If you play in the Western Athletic Conference, you're used to the lack of respect that comes with playing in the conference.

You're used to hearing things like "you can't play with the big boys," or "it's easy to run up stats against bad teams." You get used to fans saying that about teams like Fresno State, Boise State and Hawaii, regardless of what their record is and regardless of who they've beaten along the way.

I can remember, back in 1992, Fresno State was chosen to play in the Freedom Bowl in Anaheim, CA. Their opponent was chosen a few days later, it turned out to be none other than USC—the Trojans would be playing in their own backyard.

Comments made by then USC quarterback Rob Johnson became bulletin board material for the Bulldogs. "We wouldn't schedule them if it wasn't a bowl game. We want to put them in their place."

That lack of respect came back to bite Johnson and the Trojans as the Bulldogs, led by former NFL quarterback and Super Bowl champion Trent Dilfer, pulled off an improbable 24-7 victory.

It happened again almost 15 years later, this time it was Boise State that was in the role of the underdog. In the role of the team that some felt didn't deserve to be in a BCS game simply because of the conference they played in.

No one, outside their own fans and some inside the WAC, felt Boise could win this game. Not against Oklahoma and not with star running back Adrian Peterson returning to the Sooners' backfield.

Boise State hung with Oklahoma all game long, through all four quarters, and after the clock ticked down to triple zeros; both teams were still deadlocked.

It was in overtime where the Boise State magic came out. A touchdown pulled Boise to within one point and the play that came just after that was even more improbable than the fact that Boise was still in the game against the Big XII champion.

A statue of liberty play, something almost never seen in a big situation, worked to perfection, giving Boise State a shocking 43-42 victory and making the game an instant classic.

Though there have been big wins accomplished by both Boise State and Fresno State, the conference as a whole still is looked at as one of the worst in college football. They're looked at as undeserving of a BCS bowl game because of their conference schedule, that they're unworthy of facing some of the best that college football has to offer.

If these top conferences believe that they're so much better than teams like Boise State or Fresno State, why not prove it?

According to reports, and though this team is outside of the WAC but still considered a "lesser conference," Utah attempted to schedule a non-conference game with the Florida Gators this season. The deal fell through when Florida would only play in Gainesville or on a neutral field, they refused to play at Utah.

About a week ago, I had written an article backing Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews to at least get him into the Heisman conversation. When I brought his name up in a different conversation, I was told "it's easy to put up stats against bad teams."

That's an interesting thing to say seeing as Fresno State's schedule is currently ranked No. 6 in the Sagarin rankings and the combined record of their opponents is 16-3. Not to mention that three of them are undefeated and two of them are currently ranked in the Top 10.

Putting up good numbers against teams like that is lot more impressive than Florida doing it against Charleston Southern (2-3), Troy (3-2) and FIU (0-4), putting them currently at No. 107 in the rankings.

But, regardless of what stats are thrown out, conferences like the WAC and the Mountain West never get the same respect regardless of who they play during their non-conference schedule. Nor will they ever play for a national championship, regardless of their record at the end of the season.

In college basketball, they created "March Madness" to give 65 teams a chance to earn a national title shot regardless of what conference they play in.

In college football, two teams get that title shot handed to them. And here's the best part, it's only because of the conference they play in.

Still wondering why there's always an argument at the end of the college football season?

Fresno State Bulldogs: How the WAC Can Still be Won

Yes Fresno State has lost three straight but those losses have come against teams that have yet to lose a game (Wisconsin, Boise State, Cincinnati).

If Fresno State can go unbeaten through the rest of their conference schedule and somehow get help from someone in handing Boise State at least one loss, a share of the conference title is not out of reach.

Here's a look at Fresno State's remaining conference opponents and a prediction of how things should go the rest of the way.
Begin Slideshow

Upset Alert: Five Teams That Need To Be Worried in Week Six

After a 1-5 week last week, it's time to regroup and focus on the games going on this weekend.

There are going to be some great games on the schedule like Florida and LSU, Arkansas and Auburn and Nebraska and Missouri.

Though there are going to be great games to watch, there are those teams that need to be wary of a letdown or end up on the wrong side of their game.

There may not be that many surprises, but if this weekend shakes out like the season has thus far, there should be at least a few upsets before the weekend is out.
Begin Slideshow

Fresno State-Hawaii Preview: WAC Rivalry Takes On Lackluster New Look

Fresno State-Hawaii, in recent years, has been a rivalry where both teams were out for blood. It was a rivalry where neither team cared about the other, with both teams looking to run up the score and prove a point.

This season looks to be far and away different than years past, with both teams going in different directions.

After two straight wins, Hawaii has since dropped two straight to UNLV (34-33) and Louisiana Tech (27-6), also losing senior quarterback Greg Alexander for the season due to a knee injury he suffered last week.

As for Fresno State, after picking up a season-opening win at home against UC Davis, the Bulldogs have dropped three straight to Wisconsin, Boise State, and Cincinnati. All three games were within reach and could have gone the other way.

With both teams facing glaring questions, they will face off at Aloha Stadium this weekend in a WAC rivalry that won't quite have the same luster as in years past.

But make no mistake about it, both are out to pick up a much needed conference win.

Fresno State will win if...

They ride Ryan Mathews all game long. The nation's third-leading rusher is averaging 148 yards per game, including 232 yards against conference rival Boise State. Fresno State will need to use Mathews, as well as speedy freshman running back Robbie Rouse, to pound Hawaii's defense that's giving up 183 rushing yards per game.

The Bulldog defensive line can put and keep pressure on Hawaii's quarterback, who's yet to be decided by the team. The decision is down to junior college transfer Bryant Moniz or sophomore Shane Austin.

Ryan Colburn can be accurate with his passes. The Fresno State quarterback has had trouble in past weeks in under-throwing his receivers. If Fresno State can set up its passing game with a heavy dose of Mathews and Rouse, it should open up the field for Colburn to make some big plays.

The Bulldogs limit their penalties. A 10-yard penalty here and a five-yard penalty there have killed their drives or kept an opposing team's drive going. They need to eliminate the penalties and stay focused on both sides of the ball.

Fresno State will lose if...

Colburn continues to make the same mistakes that have cost the Bulldogs in their last three games. Interceptions, bad passes, and bad judgment with the football. He seems to do fine in the first half, but has thrown too many ill-timed interceptions in key moments of the game.

If the Bulldogs don't establish their running game early and often on the Hawaii defense. If the Bulldogs become pass happy, it's going to lead to too many mistakes and allow Hawaii to dictate the pace of the game.

Special teams continue to break down. The Bulldogs did an awful job on kick returns against Boise State, allowing the Broncos good field position on a few of their drives. They need to fix that problem and make sure they get coverage down field on any kick or punt returns.

Keep pressure on Hawaii's quarterback. Though a decision hasn't been made by Hawaii, they will have a quarterback who won't have any game experience. Take advantage of that and force him to make off balance throws.

My prediction...

Since Hawaii is without starting quarterback Greg Alexander, who had already passed for 1,433 yards and nine touchdowns through four games, it definitely gives Fresno State the edge offensively.

I think the Bulldogs handle this one easily and get a big game out of running back Ryan Mathews.

Fresno State 42, Hawaii 17

Revolving Door Facing New San Diego Padres General Manager

How many familiar faces will the San Diego Padres be without when the team opens spring training from Peoria, Arizona in Febuary of next year?

Trevor Hoffman is in Milwaukee for another season, signing a one year $8 million dollar deal with a mutual option for the 2011 season that could be worth up to $8.5 million.

Jake Peavy is a member of the Chicago White Sox after being traded prior to the trade deadline at the end of July.

Now, the Padres will be without Kevin Towers, the team's general manager since 1996, after new owner Jeff Moorad and the Padres decided to go in another direction.

"We found ourselves at a challenging spot with our general manager situation with one year remaining on his contract. We had to make a decision to extend him or to make the decision to move on and make a change at this point," Moorad told reporters during a press conference on Sunday.

The question now becomes, where do the Padres go from here?

According to Moorad, there are no internal candidates, ruling out Paul DePodesta the Padres' special assistant for baseball operations.

Though, there are rumors of who could be the next general manager in San Diego, the bigger question is what decisions will the new general manager make.

We assume at this point that outfielder Brian Giles will not be brought back, especially with the emergence of Will Venable.

But there are other lingering questions; Will they keep both Kevin Kouzmanoff and Chase Headley or will they look to trade one or the other?

As far as most Padre fans are concerned, they're ok with trading Chase Headley and leaving Kevin Kouzmanoff at third base, especially with the kind of hitting Kouz was doing in the second half of the season.

The biggest question facing the new general manager is the fate of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and closer Heath Bell.

Prior to the trade deadline, there were rumors that the Padres were close to trading both players to either the Angels or the Dodgers. When both deals broke down, it was Jake Peavy that ended up being shown the door.

With Peavy's contract off the books, it allows San Diego to begin talks with Gonzalez and his agent about a long term extension, if the team decides he'll be a part of their future.

As for Bell, his days in San Diego seem to be numbered. There is a lot of talk that the team should trade him at his highest value and try to get as much as possible in return.

If that's the case, who will be the next closer for the Padres? I would look no further than Padres' reliever Mike Adams, who has been nothing short of dominant since his return from Tommy John Surgery.

Adams gave up just three earned runs in 37 innings pitched this season; good for a 0.73 earned run average and holding opposing hitters to a .111 batting average against. This exemplifies why he may be able to take the closer's roll and run with it.

So, as the Padre players watch the post season and the teams involved, their front office has a lot of things on their plate and a lot of decisions coming up that will impact this team for the next several years.

Though we may not know those decisions for the next several weeks, believe me when I tell you that the Padre players and their fans will be anxiously awaiting each and every one.

Upset Alert: Six Teams That Need to be Worried in Week Five

Just when you thought there couldn't be any more upsets, college football gets that much more exciting last weekend.

Oregon drops Cal with a 42-3 haymaker up in Eugene, OR and Iowa knocks off Penn State in Happy Valley!

Not only that but Michigan and LSU were in dogfights against their opponents, both teams ended up winning by just the skin of their teeth. It took a goal line stand for LSU to hold off Mississippi State while Michigan overcame a late Indiana touchdown to win their game.

What could we possibly see this weekend?!
Begin Slideshow

Heisman Darkhorse: Making a Case For Fresno State's Ryan Mathews

Not since quarterback David Carr in 2001, now with the NFL's New York Giants, have the Fresno State Bulldogs had a possible Heisman candidate. Now it looks like Fresno State junior running back Ryan Mathews has possibly emerged as the next candidate for the coveted Heisman trophy, yet he's getting no attention at all.

Growing up and watching a team from a small conference, I've gotten used to the media giving little to no respect to teams like Fresno State. I've gotten used to fans of teams from the top BCS conferences like the ACC, SEC and Big Ten giving little to no respect for teams from conferences like the WAC because "they don't play anyone."

Before I get into talking about a candidate that deserves respect and to be in the Heisman conversation, I wanted to dive a little deeper into the conversation about why there's very little respect for teams like Fresno State.

The way the Bowl Championship Series is set up right now is unfortunate for those in conferences outside those that are granted automatic berths.

It tells teams like Fresno State, Boise State, Utah, BYU and a few others that they will never play for a national championship regardless of the fact that they might have finished their season undefeated.

Even when Boise State went undefeated in 2006, they still finished behind two-loss teams Michigan and USC in the polls. When they were told they didn't belong, Boise State decided to prove everyone wrong when they knocked off eighth ranked Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. A game that became an instant classic.

Even after Boise State's win, there were still some that argued that Oklahoma played without Adrian Peterson, the team's top running back. Some said Boise would never have won if Peterson had been able to play. Even after an impressive win, even after knocking off a team that no one expected them to beat, the respect still wasn't there.

The reason I bring all of that up is for one simple question: If the BCS says they don't deserve a national championship shot even after going undefeated, does this mean that players from the WAC or MWC don't deserve consideration for the Heisman Trophy?

Regardless of the fact that there is a running back out of the WAC that currently leads the nation in rushing, does he not deserve any consideration at all for the Heisman Trophy because of the conference he plays in?

Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews would tell you that he'd much rather stay in the shadows and keep to himself. He's not the kind of guy that looks for attention or craves it. He's the kind of guy that shys away from the spotlight, the media cameras and post game questions about his own performance.

Since Mathews isn't going to be the one to campaign for himself, I'll take it upon myself to thrust him into the national spotlight.

Through four games this season, Mathews leads the nation in rushing with 592 total yards, and a 148 yard per game average. Four of his five touchdowns have come on runs of 60 yards or more, with three of those four on a Friday night game on national television against conference rival Boise State. Even after that performance, still, no one talks about him.

Take a look at one of the guys that is getting a lot of Heisman hype and you'll only see one difference between Mathews and Cal running back Jahvid Best.

Through the same amount of games (4), Mathews leads Best in total yards rushing (592/467), yards per game (148.0/116.8), carries (87/69) and they're dead even in yards per carry (6.8). The only difference between Mathews and Best is the touchdown total which Best leads with eight to Mathews' five.

So why is Mathews not getting any hype at all if the only difference between one running back and another is their touchdown total? You can't use the argument "Fresno State hasn't played anyone," when Cal has had the more favorable schedule thus far.

Fresno State has faced UC Davis, Wisconsin, Boise State and Cincinnati to open their season where Cal has played Maryland, Eastern Washington, Minnesota and Oregon. Both teams have played half of their four games at home, both have played a conference rival.

Against Oregon, who was giving up 132.5 yards per game (8th in the PAC-10), Best was held to just 55 yards rushing and did not get into the end zone in Cal's lopsided 42-3 loss.

Against Boise, second in the WAC giving up just 120.5 yards per game, Mathews went for a career high 234 rushing yards and was responsible for 21 of Fresno State's 34 points in their 51-34 loss.

So I ask again, why does one guy get hype when it's the other that has better numbers?

If making a case for Mathews against Jahvid Best didn't get it done, how about comparing him to former Heisman Trophy winners like USC's Reggie Bush and Wisconsin's Ron Dayne.

Through the same number of games (4), Mathews is 101 yards better than Bush (491) and 20 yards fewer than Ron Dayne (612) but in just 14 fewer carries than Dayne's 101.

If Mathews continues at the clip he's on now, averaging 148 yards per game, he'll finish the season with 1,776 rushing yards surpassing Reggie Bush's 1,740 rushing yards during his 2005 Heisman season.

No, I'm not comparing Mathews to the kind of athletes that both Bush and Dayne were during their amazing seasons. I know there will never be another Reggie Bush and no one will ever break the Division I record that Dayne set in his 1999 season for the Wisconsin Badgers.

All I'm saying is, there's a young running back that deserves at least a little respect and a little attention for what he's been able to do this season.

What conference he plays in or who Fresno State plays against should have no bearing on his consideration for being one of the best college football players this season.

Though we don't know where his numbers will go during the remaining eight games on the schedule, he's done enough to at least be in the conversation.

Or should I tell the Western Athletic and Mountain West Conferences that they'll never ever have a player considered for the most coveted trophy in the land next to the Sears National Championship trophy?

Fresno State of Confusion: Why the Bulldogs Need a QB Change to Salvage Season

For the third straight week, an ill-timed interception by quarterback Ryan Colburn cost Fresno State a victory. It's time for Pat Hill to consider making a change at quarterback or risk more games ending up like the last three.

Fresno State opened their season at home against the UC Davis Aggies and got an impressive performance from first year quarterback Ryan Colburn in a 51-0 blowout of UC Davis. He finished the game with five completions on nine attempts for 161 yards and one touchdown, that coming on a 92 yard strike to wide receiver Marlon Moore, and one interception.

In the last three games, coming against Wisconsin, Boise State and Cincinnati, Colburn has thrown six interceptions and half of those came in Fresno State's 34-31 double overtime loss to Wisconsin.

The problem isn't the interceptions he's throwing, it's the timing of where they're coming in the game.

Against Wisconsin, after not throwing a single interception in the first half of the game, Colburn would throw two interceptions in the second half, none bigger than the one that came mid-way through the third quarter.

On a second down play from the Bulldogs own 15-yard line, Ryan Mathews would pick up 55 yards to the Wisconsin 30-yard line. It looked like the Bulldogs had the momentum to pick up another score.

But on the very next play, Colburn tried to force a pass between three Wisconsin defenders and was intercepted by Wisconsin defensive back Niles Brinkley. Ending a very promising drive that started on the Bulldog three yard line.

Though neither of the two second half interceptions ended in Wisconsin scores, the Bulldogs could have at least picked up a field goal. Had they done that, it would have made Kevin Goessling's 41-yard field goal with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter the game winner. Instead, the two teams would go into overtime.

After trading touchdowns in the first overtime, Fresno State would get the ball to start the second overtime.

The very first play for the Bulldogs, Ryan Colburn threw up a pass that wide receiver Chastin West had no chance in catching and it was intercepted in the end zone by Chris Maragos.

That turned out to be the nail in the Bulldogs' coffin as it gave Wisconsin the ball and eventually the game winning field goal.

Against Boise State, just a week later, Colburn was intercepted on just the fourth play of the game by Boise State's Wilton Venable for a touchdown. However, It wasn't the interceptions that were the problem for Colburn in this game, but the underthrown passes that plagued the Bulldog quarterback all night long.

He was forcing his receivers to come back to the ball and trying to either break up an interception or trying to out jump the Boise State cornerbacks. for the ball.

Then, this past Saturday against Cincinnati, Colburn again threw an interception on what turned out to be the most pivotal drive of the game.

With Fresno State trailing Cincinnati 21-17, the Bulldogs drove all the way down inside the Bearcat 10-yard line.

Cincinnati stuffed Bulldog running back Ryan Mathews on a third-and-one which would end up being the final play of the third quarter. It allowed Bulldog head coach Pat Hill to discuss fourth down options with his quarterback. The decision between kicking a field goal and pulling to within one point, or going for the touchdown and taking the lead?

The decision to go for it would backfire as Colburn telegraphed his pass and he was intercepted by Cincinnati linebacker Craig Carey.

It went from being a possible game winning drive to being a drive that Cincinnati used for their own gain as quarterback Tony Pike led his team down the field for a touchdown, putting the game out of reach for good.

Although Hill told the Fresno media prior to the season opener against UC Davis that Colburn won the quarterback job outright, the decision has looked like a bad one through four games this season.

The Bulldogs should be 4-0 or at worst 3-1 right now, but instead they're quite possibly known as one of the best 1-3 teams in the country.

It's not that the offense as a whole is lacking, the Bulldogs are outgaining their opponents week in and week out.

Over their last three games, they're averaging 472 yards per game while their opponents are averaging 416 yards per game. They're also winning the time of possession battle, holding an almost 34-to-22 minute advantage over those last three games.

If Fresno State is going to salvage their season a change needs to be made. Make no mistake about it the Bulldogs still have a chance for the Western Athletic Conference title if they don't lose another conference game from here on out.

There are two very talented freshmen quarterbacks waiting in the wings in Derek Carr, younger brother of former number one pick David Carr, as well as Ebahn Feathers. Two quarterbacks who can lead this team out of the slump they're currently in. The question becomes, will Pat Hill make that change.

Unfortunately, if past history is any indication, Hill would undoubtedly stick with Colburn. But if Ryan continues to make the same mistakes, don't be surprised if Hill makes the tough decision to try and salvage a season that may already be slipping away.

Cloudy with a Chance of Football: Can Fresno State's Pat Hill Weather the Storm?

Pat Hill has always believed in over-achieving ever since he took over at Fresno State in the fall of 1996, following long time Bulldog coach Jim Sweeney. Hill wanted to turn a team from one that had three straight losing seasons to a team that could win year in and year out.

Hill began the mantra of "Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime" at Fresno State. He wanted Fresno State to play "big time football" against some of the top teams in the country.

Over the past 11 seasons, not including the in progress 2009 season, Hill has done just that, playing teams like USC, Wisconsin, Kansas State and Oklahoma in recent years.

In 2001, it looked like Hill and the Bulldogs were finally reaping the benefits as they earned a No. 8 national ranking and the cover page and story in Sports Illustrated.

The Bulldogs opened the season with a surprising 24-22 win on the road against Colorado followed by a 44-24 drubbing of then tenth ranked Oregon State at Bulldog Stadium then a 32-20 win over Wisconsin up in Madison.

They were shocking the college football world, this wasn't a team that was expected to beat teams like these and especially not on the road. But they were doing just that, gaining Hill and the Bulldogs national respect around the country.

But, in what's become a familiarity with every Bulldog team, the high was met by an unbelievable low. After conference wins over Tulsa and Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs would be upset by a familiar foe in Boise State, a 35-30 loss at home followed by a 38-34 loss in Hawaii against the Warriors.

Since that season, there has been a lot of talk from fans that Hill should come down from the kind of scheduling he's done since he became the head coach. That playing some of the top teams in college football wears on his players and causes more injuries and fatigue later in the season.

Some fans say he expects too much from his teams, that he should schedule lesser teams and get them ready for conference play. To stop concentrating on making a BCS bowl game and just concentrate on winning an outright WAC title, something Hill hasn't accomplished in his tenure.

My take is far different from that of fans I've talked to in the past as well as friends that still live in the area.

Without Pat Hill, Fresno State would still be some small unknown school in the central valley of California. There would be no talk of them being a preseason "BCS Buster" or the possibility that they could shock some prime time team in college football.

I'm not the type of fan that wants to see Fresno State schedule UC Davis, Portland State and Sacramento State year in and year out just so they can possibly be undefeated going into conference play. That is going to do them an ounce of good when they're still getting thumped by Boise State and Hawaii.

My other problem is I think is those that want Pat Hill fired. The one thing I've yet to see from those people is who they want instead of Hill. Who do the Bulldog fans want as their head coach if you're wanting so badly to get rid of someone that's turned this program around from where it used to be.

Hill's "Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime" mantra has increased the visibility of this program. The impact of which may have encouraged players, who otherwise wouldn't have given them a second look, to consider Fresno State during recruiting.

Though there is inherent risk in traveling to some of the top BCS schools, it is also a way to garner some level of credibility in Hill’s no-fear attitude.

I have been and will continue to be a supporter of coach Hill. I'd much rather watch this program face teams like Wisconsin, Oregon and USC than watch them pummel teams like UC Davis, Portland State and any other game most of us would consider "warmups."

Support him or don't, as long as Pat Hill is the head coach of the Fresno State Bulldogs, his mantra will continue to be the focus of their scheduling.

Upset Alert: Five Teams That Should Be Worried in Week Four

Last week, what was supposed to be a lackluster schedule, saw more excitement than a lot of us thought.

Before the night was over, teams like USC and BYU were left wondering what happened.

This week, there are a whole nother list of games on the schedule and another list of potential upset candidates.

So, without further ado, my list of teams that shouldn't take their games lightly because if they do, they'll end up right where USC and BYU ended up at the final gun. On "UPSET ALERT."
Begin Slideshow

San Diego Padres: Five Things To Reflect on This Season

In honor of the franchise's 3000th victory this afternoon, a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, here are five things to reflect on during this 2010 season.

The San Diego Padres came into the 2010 season with not a whole lot expected from them. In fact, most "experts" had them finishing dead last in the National League Western Division and it turns out that they weren't far off.

There have been a lot of things that have happened during the season from injuries to the shocking trade of ace Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox.

But from that has come four very talented pitchers that will definitely make an impact with the Padres for years to come, while Peavy could be a few years past his prime. Though that's still yet to be seen.

Injury to Brian Giles allowed the emergence of Will Venable

When Brian Giles went down to injury, the Padres tried a few outfielders from Triple-A Portland, but none took the job and ran with it more than Will Venable.

Since his call up to San Diego, Venable has not only shown Gold Glove caliber defense but he has added power to what was a lackluster Padre offense void of a power bat outside first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

Venable is hitting .267 with 11 home runs and has driven in 33 runs. He's definitely giving San Diego something to look forward to next season.

Trevor who?

So far this season, Heath Bell has shown that he can become a proven closer even without prior experience in Major League Baseball.

So far this season, Heath Bell has converted 38 saves in 43 chances. But, even though Bell has taken over nicely for departed long time closer Trevor Hoffman, there's a lot of talk that Bell could be traded at the end of this season.

We'll just have to wait and see if that does in fact happen and who will be the closer for San Diego in 2010? Perhaps Mike Adams?

Mat Latos the next Jake Peavy?

Ok, so let's not get too ahead of ourselves on this one, but the young right hander has shown flashes of brilliance during his short stint with San Diego this season.

He has electric stuff and the ability to be a game changing pitcher, but he has a lot to learn and that will only come with age and experience.

He should be fun to watch next season.

Seems the Padres are committed to winning...finally

The one thing I look back on this season was the Padres' ability to sign all three of their top draft picks. Something that hadn't been done in recent years.

The Padres, under former owner John Moores, used to pick out of sign-ability which led them to one of their worst draft picks in history. That being Matt Bush who is no longer in baseball after several off the field issues.

But this season seems to be different under new owner Jeff Moorad. The Padres got their draft picks signed and they drafted players that were under super agent Scott Boras. A guy the Padres used to stay away from.

There's still a level of excitement from the fans

Although there's been a lot of criticism from the San Diego Padre fans, those fans are still turning out to watch this young team play.

There's more promise in the young players that are out there now and that's translating to the field. They've been picking up series wins over National League West foes like Colorado, San Francisco, and Los Angeles late in the season, even affecting the NL West race as well as the Wild Card.

They look to next season and wonder what this team will do with a full season together. There are questions being thrown around like, can they contend? Can they surprise a lot of people and actually stay in the race all season long?

Though those questions won't be answered for quite some time, at least the excitement is still there among the fans. That means they haven't given up on this team and they are still keeping with the Padres' motto that has lived on since it began during the 1998 season. "Keep The Faith."

WAC Shootout: Six Things to Learn From Fresno State's Loss to Boise

In what is being called one of the best games in the history of this rivalry, Fresno State and Boise State traded big play for big play.

When the smoke finally cleared, it was Boise State that had pulled away late for a 51-34 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs.

There were so many game-changing moments, missed opportunities, incredible plays, and even more incredible players.

So, here's a look back at five things we learned about Fresno State in their loss to Boise State.

1. Ryan Mathews is a stud

Junior running back Ryan Mathews showed off for a national audience last night and definitely made a case for himself being in consideration for one of the nation's top running backs.

Mathews carried the ball 19 times for 234 yards and three scores. All three touchdowns came on runs of 60 yards or more. He carried this team all night long and impressed a lot of people across the country.

2. Ryan Colburn still isn't impressing me

Against Wisconson, just a week ago, junior quarterback Ryan Colburn made some great throws that were right on the money to his receivers. But, then he started to show a lack of arm strength like a starting pitcher tiring in the seventh inning.

Colburn had just 10 yards passing in the entire first half against Boise, finishing with 187 yards on the game and one touchdown.

The problem was, Colburn was underthrowing his receivers all night long. Forcing guys like Chastin West and Seyi Ajirotutu to come back to the ball and out-jump the cornerback.

One of my keys to this game was for Ryan to limit his interceptions. On the third play of the game he was intercepted by Winston Venable, brother of San Diego Padres' outfielder Will Venable, for a touchdown that put Boise up 7-0.

Later in the first half, Colburn was intercepted again, which Boise turned into a field goal for an early 10-0 lead.

Don't be surprised, if this continues, if we see freshman Derek Carr under center before the season is over.

3. Defensive End Chris Carter is for real

Junior defensive end Chris Carter was a thorn in the side of Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore all night long. He came up with huge defensive stops at key points in the game...with a full cast on his left hand.

The speed that he has off the ball is arguably the best the Bulldogs have had in quite some time.

This kid is going to be one to watch all season long, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him jump to the NFL after this season.

4. Fresno State's defense is the best I've seen in years

This is by far the fastest defense I've seen from Fresno State in a long time. The defensive backs weren't getting beaten deep, the linebackers for the most part played the run pretty well, and the defensive end was getting to Kellen Moore more than a few times.

They do still need a lot of work as the game wears on because Boise State finally wore them down, allowing running back Jeremy Avery to break off a few big runs of his own.

5. They need help on special teams

More than a few times last night, Boise State was able to break Fresno State's containment on special teams and that allowed them to start at least two drives inside Fresno State's 20-yard line.

Even when a 102-yard return was called back for holding, Fresno State re-kicked and was beaten again by a different return man inside their own 15-yard line.

If other teams in the WAC were watching, they know that is going to be one of Fresno State's weaknesses. It's something they need to fix, or they're going to give up a lot of field position.

6. Robbie Rouse will be a running back to watch for the Bulldogs

Young freshman running back Robbie Rouse has already made his name known in the Fresno State backfield.

The 5'8" 185-pound running back from San Diego has shown the kind of quickness that Ryan Mathews shows and could be just as dangerous with the ball in his hands.

I doubt Mathews will be back for his senior season in 2010, so look for Rouse to be the heir apparent to Mathews next season.

Click here to see what the Broncos learned from this shootout.

Upset Alert: Five Teams That Should be Worried in Week Three

It's week three of college football and the first two weeks have lived up to the hype.

There have been great games, nail biters and upsets and it's still very early on in the season.

Each week, I've put a certain number of teams on upset alert and this week is no different.

There aren't that many good games on the schedule this week but there are a few that I look at and wonder if one of those teams will really bring their best football.

We'll see as a full slate of games takes place tomorrow.
Begin Slideshow

Fresno State-Boise State CvC: A Look Inside Friday Night's WAC Showdown

The Western Athletic Conference has its own share of rivalries, its share of "must watch" games, but none are bigger than the rivalry between the Fresno State Bulldogs and the Boise State Broncos.

In past years, these two teams have looked at their schedules prior to their season starting and both pointed out this one game.

When the game takes place in November, it's a game that fans of both teams look forward to and a game that could decide the WAC Champion.

But for whatever reason, this year's edition of the rivalry between Fresno State and Boise State takes place on the third week of the season for both teams—earlier than it's ever been.

That doesn't mean that the rivalry won't be as strong or the game doesn't mean as much as it usually would. Make no mistake about it—both teams are going to be revved up and ready to go on Friday night.

Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, CA is already sold out, the Bulldog Shop across the street from the stadium has been selling Fresno State White Out T-shirts, and the airwaves around town have been going crazy about this game.

Boise State (2-0) comes into this game ranked 10th in the country, opening the season with an impressive 19-8 win over the Oregon Ducks and a blowout 48-0 win over Miami (OH).

For Fresno State (1-1), the Bulldogs returned home after a disappointing loss to Wisconsin this past weekend—a game that was easily winnable. Late turnovers and a missed field goal, though, allowed Wisconsin to sneak away with a 34-31 double overtime victory.

This is a game that means just as much to both teams. Both have something to prove; both have something on the line. This is a game that Boise State has dominated in recent years, but Fresno State could surprise if it makes the right plays at the right time.

Fresno State will win if...

...the defense can keep pressure on QB Kellen Moore

Fresno State's defense needs to be a force in this game. They need to put and keep pressure on Boise State sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore. They can't allow him to sit in the pocket and pick the defense apart.

Moore had 198 yards passing against Oregon and 307 last weekend against Miami (OH). Keep pressure on him and force him to make throws, and it could get him off his game.

...the Bulldogs pound Boise State's defense on the ground

Fresno State is well known for its running game. Ryan Mathews has rushed for over 100 yards in each of his first two games, but the Bulldogs have another threat that is making his name known.

Freshman running back Robbie Rouse has made his presence felt with his speed out of the backfield. He ran for 75 yards in their opening game against UC Davis and added 46 against Wisconsin. Get him involved with Mathews, along with Lonyae Miller and Anthony Harding, and wear the Boise State defense down.

...the Bulldogs capitalize on opportunities

Fresno State shot itself in the foot against Wisconsin and missed on opportunities that could have put the game away early. A missed field goal in the first half from kicker Kevin Goessling and three interceptions by quarterback Ryan Colburn, two of which turned into game-changers, kept Wisconsin in the game.

The Bulldogs need to limit their mistakes and capitalize on their opportunities. Colburn needs to stay patient in the pocket and deliver the kind of impressive throws we saw against Wisconsin.

When they have makable field goals, Goessling needs to make sure that he puts them through the uprights because every point is going to be huge for the Bulldogs.

Fresno State will lose if...

...it continues to turn the ball over

As I mentioned before, Fresno State killed itself with turnovers in its loss to Wisconsin. Colburn threw two key interceptions; one ended a promising drive after a long run from Mathews, and the other came on the first play of the second overtime.

Colburn needs to avoid forcing his throws, and he needs to stop underthrowing his receivers. That led to two of his three interceptions.

...the offense can't move the ball

If Fresno State can't establish the run and can't get anything with any of its three running backs, it's not going to help the passing game.

The offensive line needs to make sure it's opening holes for the run game as well as giving Colburn time to throw.

The X-Factor

Fresno State's defense

The biggest factor for me is going to be defensive end Chris Carter. He took advantage of a fairly inexperienced Wisconsin offensive line and got to the quarterback a few times during the game.

Carter needs to lead this defense, which needs to establish itself early. Keep Boise State's offense off the field and allow the Bulldog offense to put points up early. If the defense can limit the damage and not let Boise get out ahead early, Fresno State could be in prime position to make a move.

Prediction

Boise State better come ready to play, or the Broncos will be taken by surprise by a younger, faster Fresno State team than they saw last season.

Boise State picked Fresno State apart in their game last year and ran all over the Bulldogs before the first half was even over.

There's no question that the Broncos' defense is one of the best they've had in a while, and that could prove costly for Colburn and Co.

That said, ever the eternal optimist and with Fresno State playing at home, I think the Bulldogs limit their mistakes and Colburn will shine on national television, coming up with a big touchdown late.

Fresno State 34, Boise State 28

Who Needs LT?: Young, Gifted San Diego Padres Have City Charged About 2010

The San Diego Padres were left for dead in late July, but since the All-Star break, this team has shown that they could be a definite factor next season.

There is finally a hint of promise in San Diego and it's not because the San Diego Chargers are about to kick off their 2009 season tonight against Oakland.

The San Diego Padres have been playing as good of baseball as fans have seen in the last few years. They're showing power, the offense is scoring runs, and the pitching has been superb. Although, Heath Bell blowing two straight saves in as many chances has to be a little concerning to the San Diego brass.

There's definite leadership in the Padres' clubhouse with guys like Adrian Gonzalez and David Eckstein. Young core players like Will Venable and Everth Cabrera are showing signs of becoming break out All-Stars. Not to mention young Tony Gwynn Jr. showing signs of becoming the kind of hitter his father was some 10-plus years ago.

Before we get too carried away though, there are still a lot of decisions to be made during this coming offseason. Ironically enough it will be owner Jeff Moorad's first offseason as the new Padres owner.

There have been surprises this season with guys like Kevin Correia who has been thrown in as the Padres' ace with Chris Young being out and Jake Peavy being traded to Chicago.

Young short stop Everth Cabrera, who had never played above Low-A ball, took the starting job by the reigns and hasn't let go all season. He's come up with big hits, including a walk off grand slam home run against the New York Mets last month. He's also made even the toughest plays look routine and has given the team speed on the base paths. Something they've lacked for some time.

Will Venable has been looking like Brian Giles at a young age, making diving catches and giving the Padres much needed power in the lineup. He could be a player to watch for years to come.

Kyle Blanks had a tough start to his Padres' career, but he had found his power stroke in a big way, showing why the Padres' brass liked this 6'6" first baseman turned left fielder. Unfortunately for Blanks, he's been on the disabled list due to a foot injury, an injury that he'll overcome and be ready to go next season.

Kevin Kouzmanoff, though he's had his struggles at times, has really shown why the Padres had so much confidence in him when they traded Josh Barfield to the Cleveland Indians to get him. Kouz currently sits at 17 home runs on the season, six short of his 23 in 2008.

Then there's Adrian Gonzalez. Is there really a way to describe possibly the best power hitter in Padres history? Gonzalez, after hitting 36 home runs and driving in 119 in 2008 has bested his home run total with 37 so far this season, but has only driven in 86, showing the Padres lack of base runners with Gonzalez at the plate.

Mat Latos, a young 21-year old right hander, made an immediate impact for the San Diego Padres. He had an electric fastball and an even better breaking ball that allowed him to keep hitters off balance.

Unfortunately for Latos, probably because of the amount of innings he threw which his young arm wasn't used to, after winning four of his first five starts, Latos has dropped four of his most recent five.

He made his final start of the 2009 season against the Dodgers on Sept. 5th and will spend the rest of the season watching the other pitchers and learning valuable lessons before he becomes a full time starter in 2010.

This is one of the youngest teams the Padres have fielded in recent memory and a team that can definitely make some noise next season. With the leadership in place and a few of the right pieces coming together, the Padres' front office will need to make some key moves during the off season.

If they do that, this Padres ballclub could be in the thick of the National League West all season long.
