Breaking Through: Will Matt Leinart Ever Be What We Thought?

The Arizona Cardinals are sitting pretty good this year with a 6-3 record that puts them atop the NFC West.

Kurt Warner has led the Cardinals to the fifth-ranked passing offense with 2,515 passing yards halfway through this 2009 season.

Yep, things seem to be flying high in Arizona at the moment, but what about the future?

Remember Matt Leinart...Heisman-winning quarterback with USC? No. 11 overall pick in the 2006 Draft? Of course you do. Well, it is pretty obvious that things didn't quite turn out as planned for Mr. Leinart, but here's some hope for all you Cardinals fans: There's still a chance!

Yes, things didn't work out at first, but that is not necessarily his fault. He suffered greatly from a running game that was near the bottom of the league. You can actually look at his numbers and see that in his first 11 starts, he did better than many NFL quarterbacks that made it big.

In Eli Manning's first season as a starter, he threw for a much worse completion percentage than Leinart did, with a 48.2 completion percentage as opposed to Leinart's 56.8 percent.

In 1998, Peyton Manning had a worse touchdown to interception ratio then Leinart did.

In Donovan McNabb's rookie season, he only averaged 4.4 yards per attempt. On the other side, Leinart averaged 6.8 yards per attempt, which almost mirrors the accomplished NFL quarterbacks Drew Brees and Tom Brady.

These statistics and a gut feeling have led me to a bold prediction: Matt Leinart will be a Pro Bowl quarterback in the next five years. Once Warner retires, expect the former Heisman-winning quarterback to explode and be an elite quarterback for the rest of his career.

Denver Falls to San Francisco but Prove They Have Depth

Now that we are a few days removed from the Broncos' preseason opener, its time to take a look at the game without emotions raging inside of us.

Although Denver lost the game 16-17, the Broncos showed that they have depth at many positions.

The receiving corp looked good throughout the whole game. Despite less playing time, rookies Kenny McKinnley and Nate Swift looked good.

The starters also looked good, even without star Brandon Marshall, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. He is likely to return next week.

The running back position proved to have the same depth as the receivers did. Correll Buckhalter started the game at running back, but only racked up four yards on as many carries.

Fan-favorite Peyton Hillis led the team in yards with 49 yards on 10 attempts, continuing his average of almost five yards a carry.

Rookie Knowshon Moreno looked impressive until he was taken out in the second quarter with a knee injury. He is most likely out for the rest of the preseason, but should be ready for the start of the regular season.

With a great showing by the skill players came an unbalanced performance by starting QB Kyle Orton.

He move the ball down the field very well. He looked very accurate on most of his throws except four three of them. All were interceptions, including one in the endzone by veteran Nate Clemons.

On the other hand, backup Chris Simms looked very impressive. He played the entire second half while throwing for almost 150 yards and two touchdowns.

Let's flip it over to the defensive side of the ball now.

Recording four sacks on the day, the pass rush was definitely the highlight of the game. Players who helped reach that total were converted DE to OLB Elvis Dumervil and rookie Chris Baker.

Leading the team in tackles was all around player Spencer Larsen. The backup fullback/linebacker got five take-downs versus the Niners' offense.

All together, the Broncos looked alright vs. San Francisco. Their are still many things to work out before the start of the season, but that's what preseason is for.

I'm looking forward to seeing what next week has to offer.

Trevor Ariza and Ron Artest Swap Teams: Who Got the Better Deal?

Three, two, one, Buzz! The Lakers are Champions of the NBA World! Kobe finally gets his championship without Shaq.

Can you believe it was only a few weeks ago that the Lakers dominated the Magic and to their 15th NBA Title? Me neither. Now we have come to free agency and the Lakers are the big team again.

In the first week of free agency, two star players have greatly influenced the Lakers. They have gained former Houston great Ron Artest, but lost up-and-coming forward Trevor Ariza.

Artest has had a history with the Lakers. The 10 year pro is recently recognized among Los Angeles fans as "the Houston player that got in Kobe's face."

This past year during a playoff series vs the Lakers, Artest got in quite a feud with LA's star forward Kobe Bryant. Although it didn't get too serious, I would have never thought these two could be teammates.

Even before the argument between the two, Artest was still an outspoken player. Known for disagreeing with just about everyone—including refs, players, coaches and teammates—Artest has spent many games on his couch watching because of suspension.

On the other hand, there is Trevor Ariza.

Ariza lets his play do the talking. After entering the draft after one year at UCLA, the fifth year pro has played for three different teams. He was drafted by the Knicks, was traded to Orlando, then was traded again to LA. In his second season with the Lakers, he finally had his breakout year.

During a playoff run that ended with a championship, Ariza averaged a little over 11 points per game while playing great defense, and averaging just over one and a half turnovers per game. He also had two crucial steals in the Western Conference finals that assured victory in two games during the six game series.

There is the background on the two players, but now it's time to answer the question: Who got the better deal?

Here are the advantages for each team:

Advantages for Houston

The youth of Trevor Ariza should pay off in the long run. Getting rid of the controversy should take some of the fire out of Artest rivals. Trevor Ariza will most certainly improve. He is no where near the prime of his career.

Advantages for Los Angeles

As of now, Artest is the better player. Their will not be the mental errors that come with young players.

Now here are the disadvantages:

Disadvantages for Houston

There will be less fire and desire to win.

With Yao Ming most likely out for the season, where will leadership come from?

Will Trevor Ariza fit into the Rockets system?

Disadvantages for Los Angeles

It won't be long until Ron Artest breaks down and falls from his greatness.

This is Kobe's team.

Will Artest be able to accept that he isn't the leader?

Phil Jackson is a calm coach that coaches with his mind, not his emotion. Will Artest be able to settle down and work in this system.

Losing Ariza's youth is sure to hurt them in the long run.

So after evaluating both sides, I have come to the conclusion that by the end of these two outstanding player's careers, the Houston Rockets have gotten the better end of this deal. Trevor Ariza should mature into one of the best players in the NBA.

Although this will hurt the Lakers, they still should be title contenders for years to come. I can't wait to see how this plays out.

NFL's Top Five Impact Rookies for 2009

Last year's draft was full of standouts at each position. It was certainly one of the best draft classes of all time.

With such a good year for rookies last year, this year's class has a lot to live up to. The 2009 Draft was said to be weaker and not as deep, but every group has its stars.

So who are this year's standouts? I'm going to let you know.

Before I start, here are some rookies that didn't make the cut.

Mark Sanchez, QB, Jets

Everette Brown, DE, Panthers

Larry English, DE/OLB, Chargers

I really like the kid out of Carolina. He has potential to be another Julius Peppers for the Panthers. I also think Sanchez will be a great player, just not this year.

Now it's time for the Top Five. Who made my cut? I won't keep you waiting any longer. Here are my Top Five Impact Rookies for 2009.

5. Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB, Bills

Exciting, Quick, Playmaker. These are all words that you could use to describe Aaron Maybin, the former Penn State Linebacker. Possibly the fastest linebacker in the Draft, Maybin just catches the eye. His blazing speed and pursuit to the ball remind me of second year player Wesley Woodyard of the Denver Broncos. If anything, he should be fun to watch this year.

4. Hakeem Nicks, WR, Giants

Before the 2008 season, the Giants were swell at wide reciever. That all went down hill. With Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer gone, what will the Giants have at reciever? They answered that question in the draft. Hakeem Nicks's draft stock changed more than any other this year. The former North Carolina player has definately found a home in New York. With his size, I expect good things for Nicks this year.

3. LeSean McCoy, RB, Eagles AND 2. Jeremy Maclin, WR, Eagles

All Donavan McNabb ever wanted were some playmakers. He finally got them through this years draft. Both McCoy and Maclin are great recievers with even better speed. McCoy will be able to give Brian Westbrook a break and keep him fresh for the playoffs. To add to that, Maclin will make a splash in the return game. This is a perfect package for Philly. McNabb is certainly pleased.

1. Knowshon Moreno, RB, Broncos

Surprise! The Bronco fan picks the Broncos pick! I know you might be thinking that, but even if I wasn't a Broncos fan, Moreno would still be number one. He is a dynamic runningback that is good at running, recieving, and blocking. The only problem is the crowded backfield of the Broncos. If he gets his carries, he should contend for the Rookie of the Year Award.

That's my list. I think that this year's rookie class will be great, but not as good as last year's. In the attempt to fill the shoes of last year's class, I think this year's class will be one size to small. If you disagree, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks for reading!

NFL's Top 5 Questions Going Into Training Camp

Mini-camps have closed in the NFL and now we head into the worst four weeks in the NFL all year. These next four weeks are full of anticipation as the players take their break before the start of the grueling five-to-six months of NFL Football.

As it is every year, there are many questions for all franchises heading into this part of the year. It is very hard to single out just a few, but in this article, I will take a look at, what in my view, are the biggest problems teams will be facing.

Before we start, here are some questions that didin't make the list.

How will Jay Cutler fair in Chicago?

How will the three first round picks at quarterbacks do in their first year?

How will Josh McDaniels do after the controversial off season?

That's enough with the questions that didn't make the cut. So without further adieu, here are the Top Five questions going into training camp.

5. Will Julius Peppers be able to work out a long term deal with Carolina?

The Panthers were finally able to get Julius Peppers to sign his franchise tag contract, and he now says he is happy in Carolina and is looking forward to a long term deal with the franchise. This could be extremely important because it would be very costly to have to franchise tag him again next year. For Carolina it is the sooner the better.

4. How will Brett Favre's re-unretirement unfold with the Vikings?

This year's sequel to the Brett Favre saga has been less interesting than the box-office sensation that kept us hanging on the edge of our seats last year. With a predictable ending, many fans and viewers will be disappointed with this failed attempt at remaking what was once an amazing thing.

I project this to be rated 2 out of 5 stars by most critics.

3. What will happen with Brandon Marshall and the Broncos?

"You're not getting traded! Get your [butt] in training camp and we'll give you the big money next year!" -Josh McDaniels (Late July, 2009)

This conversation needs to happen in order for Josh McDaniels to gain control of his team. I'm interested in seeing this one play out.

2. Will Plaxico Burress be suspended? If not, who will he play for?

At this point in time, I feel that Plaxico Burress will not be suspended.

Comissioner Roger Goodell would have done it by now if he was going to do that. That being said, I think that as soon as Goodell says he will not be suspended, teams will forget that they ever said they weren't interested. I think he will most likely end up in Chicago, Tampa Bay, or Baltimore.

1. Will Michael Vick be reinstated? If so, who will want him?

Michael Vick did a bad thing, and did his time for it. He deserves a second chance and I believe he will be given one. The problem is, who is interested?

With such a troubled past, teams may be afraid to sign the once star quarterback. If he can't make it into the NFL, he will have to try to make it in the UFL, which is begining its inaugueral season in October.

There it is. Not much surprising but that's my take. If you disagree, comment or write a whole other article on your opinion. Looking forward to you opinion.

Note to the Editor: I made my article this way because that's how I wanted it. Please do not edit format.

Matt Prater's Problem: An In-Depth Look at the Denver Broncos' Kicker

Mile High altitude is a kicker's best friend. It may just be a myth, but it does always seem that kickers can get that extra few yards on those long kicks.

In the 2008 offseason, former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan decided not to re-sign beloved kicker Jason Elam. Elam had kicked four game-winning field goals the previous season, but Shanahan wouldn't give up the cash. He wanted a player who had a powerful leg and was good at kickoffs, so he let Elam slip away to Atlanta.

How can you replace a player who is the franchise leader in points and games played? It certainly isn't easy. You need a guy with a powerful leg and an unbreakable spirit. The answer: Matt Prater?

Matt Prater is a simple man from a small town in Ohio. The 5'10", 180-pound kicker isn't hard to figure out. Here's a look at his 2008 statistics:

Yard Range: FG Percentage for Yard Range (Makes/Attempts)

1-29 yards: 87.5 percent (7/8)

30-39 yards: 88.9 percent (8/9)

40-49 yards: 45.5 percent (5/11)

50-plus yards: 83.3 percent (5/6)

As you can see, Matt Prater had three misses total from 1-39 yards, and 50-plus yards. He had double that in the 40-49 yard range with six!

With a new head coach, the Broncos' need to be great in all three aspects of the game. In order to be successful, the special teams needs Prater to step up from the 40-yard range.

If Matt Prater wants to continue to be a pro kicker, he needs to prove that he has the heart and mind to be one.

Statistics found here.

NFC North: Preview and Predictions

The NFC North seems to have more drama than a Jerry Springer Show. The 2008 Season and 2009 Offseason may have been the craziest in the history of the division. All four teams seemed to make headlines. From "0-16" to "The Brett Favre Saga," the NFC North has been alot of fun to watch.

There are many unanswered questions in this division, and through this artical, I hope to answer one: Who will come out on top?Along the ride, some more may be answered. So fasten you seatbelts as we get ready to take a ride on the roller coast we like to call the NFC North.
Begin Slideshow

AFC North: Preview & Predictions

"Rothlesberger, has time. Throws for the back of the endzone, and it is... Cuaght for a Touchdown by Holmes! Unbelievable!"

Last year, the AFC North produced the Superbowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. This gave them an NFL record sixth Superbowl in Franchise history. It may have been the most exciting end to a season in the history of the NFL, but thats what it was, the End!

Now it is a new season, and we are quickly approaching it. It is only three months before preseason kicks off and the 2009 season is underway. So what will this year produce? That is the point of this series.

Over the next 9 weeks I will be giving an indepth look at each division, with a conclusion of an indepth look at the league. This week will be a preview of the AFC North.
Begin Slideshow

Jack's Top 25: Post-Spring Football

Now that the Draft is over, us football fans have less to talk about. No more mock drafts. No more arguing. What will we do? Oh ya! Its time for debating Top 25 rankings!

The college football season is just a few months away. The thoughts of last season are starting to fade as we look forward to this upcoming year.

Now that Spring football has come to a close, we can now put the pieces together and see how good teams will be this year. So with out further adieu, here is my first NCAA Football Top 25:

Florida Gators

Oklahoma Sooners

Alabama Crimson Tide

Texas Longhorns

LSU Tigers

Virginia Tech Hokies

USC Trojans

Oklahoma State Cowboys

Penn State Nittany Lions

Ole' Miss Rebels

Ohio State Buckeyes

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Oregon Ducks

Georgia Bulldogs

Iowa Hawkeyes

Cal Bears

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Kansas Jayhawks

Boise State Broncos

TCU Horned Frogs

Utah Utes

Oregon State Beavers

Clemson Tigers

Michigan State Spartans

Florida State Seminoles

There it is. Yes, someone will break onto the scene and some of these teams will fall, but as of now, these are the teams I think have the best chance to succeed. The 2009 Season should be a good one.

Look for "Jack's Top 25: Preseason" in a month or two, before thew season starts.

Knowshon Moreno to Wear 27, Honoring Darrent Williams

"With the 12th pick, in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select, Knowshon Moreno, runningback, Georgia."

- NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell

On April 25th, the Denver Broncos made one of the most head scratching moves in the Draft when they selected Knowshon Moreno out of Georgia. They had much more important needs than runningback, but coach McDaniels was compelled to draft this promising runningback. Now that the dust has settled, and Draft day has past, everybody is excited to move forward to next season.

This past week, the new rookies selected their numbers. Top picks such as Robert Ayers, who picked 56, and Alfonzo Smith, who picked 33, got first choice for the numbers they wanted. Only one person got to pick in front of them, and that was Moreno himself.

In college, he wore 24, which is star cornerback Champ Bailey's number. So, what did he pick? After thinking for awhile, he finally decided on a number. What was it?

Answer: 27

When he chose to wear 27, he did not know the history of the number. When he went to report to team officials his selection, he was told the story of what happened on January 1st, 2007. The story of cornerback Darrent Williams.

December 31st, 2006 The Denver Broncos head into an away game with San Fransisco. The plan was simple for the Broncos: If you win, you get in the playoffs; If you loose, you're out. After the final whistle in the fourth quarter, the game was tied. Heading into overtime, conerback Darrent Williams did not know that this extra period was extending his last game ever played.

With under three minutes left in OT, the 49ers kicked a field goal to win the game. This loss was the end of Williams career. Early the next morning, he was in a drive by shooting while heading back from a New Year's Eve party. He died almost instantly.

After hearing this story, Moreno did not know what to do. He wanted this number, but did not want to be disrespectful. He took this problem head on. He asked the Broncos officials for Mrs. Williams phone number. He called the woman he had never met and asked if he could wear her son's number in honor of him.

What was her reaction? She said yes, on one condition. He was to donate some of his time each month to the Darrent Williams Teen Center. He agreed.

On September 8th, Denver will play their first game of the season against Cincinnati. This will be the first time that 27 has been worn since Darrent Williams death.

Knowshon Moreno is an amazing player and person. He will wear Darrent's number with respect and glory. Hopefully, he will not disappoint.

RIP Darrent Williams

Broncos Draft: Offensive Mind Overpowers Needs

The end of the '08 season brought an end to the Mike Shanahan era in Denver.

Historically, Shanahan always had success in drafting offensive players, but when given the chance, he would never pass on a position of need on the defensive side of the ball.

After Shanahan was fired, Broncos' owner Pat Bowlen made a risky move and hired Josh McDaniels. His main objective was to keep the offense the same and rebuild the defense. After a very successful free agency period, McDaniels made a mistake that has gotten him hated by many Broncos' fans.

He traded franchise quarterback Jay Cutler.

This past weekend, Josh McDaniels got his first chance to redeem himself. It was simple: If the Broncos had a good draft, he is forgiven; if the Broncos have a bad draft, the fans will want him fired. So, how did it go? Here is a recap of Denver's 10 picks.

Round/Pick - Player, Position, School

1st/12th - Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

1st/18th - Robert Ayers, DE/OLB, Tennessee

2nd/5th - Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

2nd/16th - Darcel McBath, S, Texas Tech

2nd/32nd - Richard Quinn, TE, UNC

4th/14th - David Bruton, S, Notre Dame

4th/32nd - Seth Olsen, OT, Iowa

5th/5th - Kenny McKinley, WR, South Carolina

6th/1st - Tom Brandstater, QB, Fresno St.

7th/16th - Blake Schlueter, C, TCU

Like stated earlier, McDaniels was hired to rebuild the defense. Yes, he did address the need of defensive end. He also needed a pass catching running back.

But was it necessary to spend six of their 10 picks on offense? The Broncos had the number two ranked offense in the league last year! To go with that, they had the 29th ranked defense!

No one can see what McDaniels is doing... and that is exactly why he will be a successful coach in the NFL.

Josh McDaniels is a product of Bill Belichick. Belichick never did the ordinary thing. No one could ever guess what was coming next. On the other hand, anybody could predict what Mike Shanahan's next call would be. The weird, the out-of-the-ordinary, and the downright crazy calls are exactly the change the Broncos need.

This should be a fun year for Broncos fans. Don't be surprised by anything. And most importantly, keep faith.

22. Minnesota Vikings - Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

23. New England Patriots - Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois

24. Atlanta Falcons - Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma St.

25. Miami Dolphins - Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina

26. Baltimore Ravens - Darius Heyward-Bay, WR, Maryland

27. Indianapolis Colts - Perria Jerry, DT, Ole' Miss

28. Buffalo Bills - Ebin Brittin, OT, Arizona

29. New York Giants - Larry English, DE/OLB, Northern Illinois

30. Tennessee Titans - Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

31. Arizona Cardinals - Donald Brown, RB, UConn

32. Pittsburgh Steelers - Alex Mack, OG, California

I am still convinced that the Lions will pick Jason Smith, not Matthew Stafford. As for Denver, I now think they are going to spend both first rounders on their front seven. Buffalo now desperately needs someone to replace Peters. I really hope this is my last Mock Draft.

With 10 days until the 2009 NFL Draft, USC Quarterback Mark Sanchez is one of the hot topics in the NFL. Where will he land? Is he better than Matthew Stafford? These are just two of the questions regarding the nation's most talked about draft prospect. In my past two mock drafts, I have him going to Denver, but where do I have him now? Let's take a look.

1. Detroit Lions - Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

2. St. Louis Rams - Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

6. Cincinnati Bengals - Andre Smith, OT, Alabama

23. New England Patriots - Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois

24. Atlanta Falcons - Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma St.

25. Miami Dolphins - Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

26. Baltimore Ravens - Darius Heyward-Bay, WR, Maryland

27. Indianapolis Colts - Perria Jerry, DT, Ole' Miss

28. Philadelphia Eagles - Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina

29. New York Giants - Larry English, DE/OLB, Northern Illinois

30. Tennessee Titans - Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers

31. Arizona Cardinals - Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

32. Pittsburgh Steelers - Alex Mack, OG, California

Ha! I got you! Yeah, Mark Sanchez's stock is rising, but I still don't think that he will get drafted in the Top 11. All those team, excluding Detroit, do not need a quarterback badly enough to use a first-round pick on one. With Josh McDaniels being a quarterback specialist, I can't see him passing on the opportunity to mentor this guy. I also see B.J. Raji slipping, and Andre Smith rising.

Thanks for Reading!

Reviewing the First Week of MLB Action

Well the first week of baseball has come and went. Like every year, there has been upsets. There has been blowouts. There has been nail-biters. There has been brawls. Just like always, it has been alot of the same, but this year, there is alot more change. There was the tragic deaths of "the voice of the Phillies," Harry Kalas and Angels's pitcher Nick Adenhart. There was the Grand opening of two new standiums in NYC. But the biggest change of all has been the teams on top of the divisions. You won't believe this!
Begin Slideshow

James Harrison Re-signs With the Steelers...Finally!

James Harrison's rocky ride in Pittsburgh seems to be calming down. After being undrafted in 2002, he signed with the Steelers. He was released then re-signed frequently during that time.

He played in Europe to show his stuff and played very well. Harrison's first chance came in '05 because of many injuries on the Steeler's roster. He played great and got into the regular rotation.

He made three special teams tackles in SuperBowl XL.

He became a starter in '06 and was named to two consecutive Pro Bowls following the '07 and '08 seasons.

He was named that 2008 Defensive player of the year and lead the Steelers to a Super Bowl win this past year.

This offseason, James Harrison felt he was worthy of a new contract, but the Steelers wouldn't bite. He was getting closer to asking for a trade before Pittsburgh finally granted his wish today. They granted him a six-year deal worth $51.175 million. The 28 year old is yet to comment to the media on the deal, but the Steelers are more than excited to keep him.

Awards/ Achievements

Super Bowl XL Champion

2008 Pro Bowl Starter

2008 Deffensive Player of the Year

Super Bowl XLIII Champion

2009 Pro Bowl Starter

2008 Stats

101 Tackles

16 Sacks, 4th in NFL

Seven Forced Fumbles, first in NFL

One INT, Super Bowl XLIII return for TD

This is definitely this best move by Pittsburgh this offseason. I don't care who you pick up, when you keep a guy like this on your roster, that is a successful offseason by my standards.

Look for the reconstruction of Heath Miller's contract. The team is looking to sign the TE to a long term deal with less money per year.

Thanks For reading!

Jack M

21. Philadelphia Eagles - Ebin Brittin, OT, Arizona

22. Minnesota Vikings - Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee

Well, wasn't that a shocker! Miami chose OT Jake Long with the No. 1 overall pick and it worked out for them, so I see this becoming a trend. Like they say: The NFL is a copy-cat league. Jason Smith is a safe pick and I truly feel the Lions will pick him.

Byron Leftwich Signs Two-Year Deal With Buccaneers

Byron Leftwich finally found a home.

ESPN's John Clayton reports that the veteran quarterback signed a two-year, $7.5 million deal. He will battle for the starting spot on a weak depth chart that includes former starters Brian Grease and Luke McCown.

After being drafted as the starter in Jacksonville, he was replace by David Gerrard. He spent one dismal year in Atlanta, before having a great season as a back-up in Pittsburgh. He threw for 300-plus yards and two touchdowns with limited action.

Only three teams were open about their interest in him. One obviously being Tampa Bay, and the others were Pittsburgh and Washington.

The Steelers wanted to return him as a back-up to Ben Roethlisberger. The Redskins, as you might know, are not in love with their current starter Jason Campbell, and seem to be looking for anyone and everyone to replace him.

I think this is a solid acquisition by Tampa Bay. He is a safe bet and will fit great in their system.

This great player and great overall guy finally found a good home. He has worked hard and deserves it. Good job Bucs!

Jeff Garcia Signs One-Year Deal With Raiders

Yeah, you read it right. Jeff Garcia is now an Oakland Raider. After all these years, the trip across America has come back to where it started. The California native travels all around the NFL as a starting QB.

He was on San Francisco's roster from 1999-2003. He then spent one year in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia, respectively.

He has spent his last two seasons in Tampa Bay, being the on-and-off starter with Brian Grease. Earlier today, he signed a one-year deal with Oakland, in his home state of California.

What does this do for the Raiders and JaMarcus Russell? A lot.

First off, he brings competition to the table. JaMarcus Russell has been known to be lazy.Whether it's not trying to lose a few pounds, or taking a sack instead of trying to scramble, he just never seems to give his full effort. Now that the Raiders have a reliable "back-up," he will push to keep the starting position.

Second, what if Russell just isn't good enough? "Oh no! This could never happen!" Well, yeah it could. The third-year quarterback out of LSU hasn't proven to be anything special, yet. He has all the makings of a good QB, but maybe he just doesn't have what it takes. Look at Ryan Leaf for example. Some people just aren't football players.

Third and final, how about them Broncos! The Broncos probably would have liked to have a veteran QB on their roster in case they can't get Sanchez in the draft. The best way to prevent your rivals from doing good is by taking players they're interested in.

This signing may be Oakland's best acquisition so far this entire offseason. Garcia could turn out to be the missing piece in the Raider puzzle, even if he never plays again.

The AFC West is getting more competitive every day, and hopefully, it won't be the laughingstock of the NFL this year.

Heisman Winners: Where Are They Now?

The Heisman Trophy, sports most prestige honor. The most coveted and special award in all of sports. Many sports fans tune in every year for the announcing of the winner. To recieve this trophy is being told that you are one of the elite players in the history of America's greatest game. The player who recieves this trophy each year will alway be remembered for what they accomplished in the game of College football, but what after that? Move on to the NFL? If they're lucky. For some reason, the Heisman winners never seem to make a living in the NFL. Only 9 of the 74 Heisman winners are in the NFL Hall of Fame. Whether they are just a "college player" or what ever other reason, many Heisman winners are just remembered for doing that. So, let us look back on this decades early Heisman winners and where they are now.
Begin Slideshow

Well, there it is. I hope it's more "original" than the last one. I thank you for any comments on how I could change my mock, but if you think something different, tell me why you disagree.

2009 Nebraska Cornhusker Football Preview

2008 was a great year for Husker Fans. After firing the University's Athletic Director and hired former head coach Tom Osbourn to replace him, head coach Bill Callahan was fired and replaced by former interim head coach Bo Pelini, a down to earth, good old Nebraska boy.

Then the team bounced back from a dismal losing record of 5-7, to an 8-4 regular season record including a postseason win vs Clemson in the Gator Bowl. The program seems to finally be returning to the days of old.

So where do we stand now? The team is improving every day and they are skyrocketing to greatness once again. Looking forward to 2009, let's see how the Husker football team looks position by position.

Quarterbacks

The most uncertain position on the Husker football team this year is with out a doubt the quarterback position. With the loss of fan favorite Joe Ganz and the transfer of Pat Witt, the top two players on last years QB depth chart are gone.

The only player to have played in a game for Nebraska is Junior Zach Lee. He has been running the first team offense in spring practice up to this point.

Next is Kody Spano. He is a Redshirt Freshman from Texas who put up impressive numbers in High School.

Then there's true Freshman Cody Green, from Dayton Texas. He is listed as an Athlete by most recruiters because he is known more for his speed than his throwing ability, but don't let this trick you, he is very accurate and has a pretty strong arm.

The own side is that he is coming in injured and will miss spring practice. The other notable QB on the roster is LaTravis Washington. The Junior is said to have a "cannon" for an arm.

Runningbacks/Fullbacks

Probably one of the most experienced positions in the upcoming season is at running back. Marlon Lucky was the starter for the majority of the season last year, although he washeld out of Colorado game because of injury. His pass catching ability will be missed, but he has now cleared the way for Roy Helu Jr.

The speedy Junior is electrifying. He uses his speed, quick reaction, and elusiveness to cut up field for many yards at a time. He is a big play threat and can hit the home run at any time.

Joining Helu with the bulk of the carries will be fellow Junior Quinton Castille. He has the ability to knock you out and keep running over you. He will use his power to create the perfect one-two punch.

The other notable I-Back is Sophomore Marcus Mendoza. He had little experience during his Freshman season but showed that he could developinto another elusive back. The fullback position is a question. Junior Justin Makovickaand true Freshman C.J. Zimmer looks to be a good options.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

The Huskers will miss WR's Nate Swift's and Todd Peterson's sure handedness, but here comes the speed!

Senior Menelik Holt and Junior Niles Paul will most likely start next year. They are two fast players who have good hand and are allot alike in size. Holt was the third receiver last year, but to the fans, he was nothing compared to Niles Paul.

Niles Paul is a WR/KR. His Kickoff return for a Touchdown against San Jose State last year assured him a place in the fans heart. The third WR will be a toss up. The only other receiver with a TD reception in '08 is Senior Chris Brooks.

The tight end position was questionable at the beginning of last year, but was quickly solve when Mike McNeil exploded into the offense.

The Junior from Montana is sure handed, quick, and a good route runner. He developed into a big touchdown threat last year. The second tight end will be another Junior in Dreu Young. He is also a great receiving tight end.

Offensive Line

With the loss of guard Matt Slauson and tackle Lydon Murtha, the right side of the line will be very shaky and inexperienced, but the left side will be solid.

Returning starters Jacob Hickman, Senior center, Mike Smith, Junior left tackle, and Keith Williams, Junior left guard, played tremendously in 2008.

They will continue to improve and build on last year's success. Possibilities to replace the losses on the right side could be Junior tackle Javario Burkes, who saw action last year when Mike Smith was hurt, and Junior guard D.J. Jones.

Defensive Line

By far the most experienced and most deep position on the team this year will be the D-line. Despite the losses of Ty Steinkuler and Zach Potter, everybody getting down in a three or four point stance will have tremendous experience.

At D-end, Redshirt Senior Barry Turner and Junior Pierre Allen will be able to provide an unstoppable pass rush. Turner is coming off a season ending injury and is excited to get back on the field.

At D-tackle, native Nebraskan Jared Crick will be excited to begin his first year starting as just a Sophomore. Then there is the beast in the middle, the best player on the team, Nose Guard Ndamukong Suh!

The 300 pounder decided not to enter the NFL Draft, but to return for his Senior season. He is one of the best, if not the best run stopper in the nation. He is a projected Top 10 Draft pick next year's Draft.

Linebackers

Only one starter will be returning at Linebacker next year, and that is Phillup Dillard. The two Seniors leaving will be AcademicAll-Big 12 selection Tyler Wortman and fan favorite Cody Glenn, who was beloved after his switch from Runningback to Linebacker in '08.

Dillard is a solid tackler an has good flow to the ball. He needs to work on his athleticism but is an overall good player. Blake Lawerence will most likely be a starter at the Strong Side position.

He got valuable playing time when Cody Glenn was suspended for the last three games. Another player with allot of experience is Colton Koehler, who played when Dillard was injured.

Secondary

The Secondary will be a very experienced and important part to the pass defense. Three of the four starters will be returning. At Strong Safety, Senior Larry Asante will leadthe secondary.

He is a very reliable tackler to prevent long runs and will not drop easy picks, as well as catch harder ones. Ricky Thenarse will be the starting Free Safety. Last year, he split time with Matt O'Hanlen, who graduated this past fall. He will need to step up because neither safety position is very deep.

At Connerback, Armando Murrillo will be missed. He was a captain and really stepped up when his counterpart Anthony Blue was injured at the begging of the season, and stayed injured for most of it. Replacing Blue was Anthony West.

Blue's injury gave West a chance to show his stuff, and now the team will have two Conners with experience. Other Conners to keep an eye out for are Junior Eric Hagg and Junior Prince Amukamara.

Special Teams

Last year, Alex Henry showed that he was one of the best placekickers in the nation. Although he is known for his accuracy, the Somphomore's 57-yard game winner against Colorado was the longest in school history.

The other big footed kicker on the roster is Adi Kunalic. He is a kickoff specialest and has a very high touchback percentage. The fans love the two kickers and truly make them feel like every other player.

The punter is a big question. Don't be surprised to see one of these two or a freshman starting at this position.

At returner, Niles Paul will start on both the Kickoff and Punt returns. Alfonzo Dennard will join him on Kickoffs.

So there it is. The 2009 Husker football season should be an exciting one. Hopefully, Coach Pelini will soon restore Husker tradition to the program. I am looking forward to seeing how they do with the new change at QB.

Thanks for Reading,
