I Still Like Michigan State Over North Carolina

After watching tonight's Michigan State/North Carolina clash, it may be easy to jump to the conclusion that the Tar Heels have once again demonstrated their superiority over Tom Izzo's squad. Yet, I am still left with the feeling that Michigan State would win a best-of-seven series.

In a performance that conjured images of Villanova's miracle 1985 championship shooting clip of 78.6 percent, North Carolina came out hitting on all cylinders. Led by Larry Drew, Carolina shot nearly 70 percent from the field in the first half, taking a 16-point lead into the locker room.

Michigan State shot 10 percent from three-point range, a performance that is unlikely to be duplicated for the entire remainder of its season. Additionally, Kalin Lucas had a miserable game on the offensive end, scoring a quiet 15 points on 6-17 shooting.

But this is less about re-capping the game, and more about the potential seen out of this athletic Michigan State team. What this team lacks in size, it more than compensates for with its athleticism, shooting, and depth.

Look for Michigan State to trounce a decent Wofford team this Friday, and if there is another re-match against Carolina in March or April, I like the Spartans chances to prevail.

Stadium Journey: Wisconsin's Kohl Center

Review originally published on www.StadiumJourney.com

Opened in 1998, the Kohl Center is a beautifully new arena utilized by the Wisconsin basketball and hockey teams. Its location makes for a great time before or after games. Once inside, you’ll find a fantastic venue to take in a game.

FANFARE Score: 30 (out of 35)

F ood & Beverage: 4

I entered the building, and immediately went to get a brat and some cheese curds. The brat was so-so (not nearly as good as the Red Brat I had for lunch, more on that below), and cheese curds were of course spectacular. Maybe spectacular is too strong, but it was fried cheese, so you get the idea.

A tmosphere: 4

The Kohl Center really is a beautiful facility, both inside and out. The Dale Chihuly blown glass masterpiece (known as the Mendota Wall) adorns the wall once you enter the center, and there are wide concourses throughout. Once you reach your seat, you’ll find that the action is accessible whether you are courtside, in the upper deck, sitting (or standing as is typically the case) in the student section, or kicking it in a luxury box.

The student section is loud and passionate, and the pep band is stellar. The school fight song, On Wisconsin, is one of those iconic college fight songs. The school recognizes its history (including the 1941 championship won by the school), while making no apologies for having a new beautifully glimmering venue.

N eighborhood: 5

Without a doubt, the best surrounding neighborhood of any of the Big Ten arenas can be found in Madison. Just blocks away from campus, as well as the main strip of bars and restaurants, there’s enough to keep you busy even if you have season tickets.

The capitol building is about a mile walk from Kohl and there are several addition, and slightly more upscale restaurants that can be found. In the immediate vicinity I can recommend several stops, as I had a long cold day to work my way through the neighboring bars.

State Street Brats is a very Germanic looking building, and probably the perfect setting for an OctoberFest celebration. I went for their classic Red Brat and an order of fried cheese curds, as well as a local beer—a Capitol Amber. All were good, and I especially appreciated the toppings bar for their brats—filled with onions, sauerkraut, mustards, and other sauces. All in all a good place to hang out.

Pub —This place on State Street had two people inside watching Jeopardy!—the bartender and the bartender’s friend. It was a big place with lots of pool tables, dart boards, and foosball tables. Seemed like a good place to hangout, but was pretty dead on this particular Thursday evening. I left after drinking a Fat Squirrel Ale.

Quinton’s —Slightly more upscale place, sandwich selection looked good, and had a nice selection of beers on tap. I tried the Hopalicious Ale—my favorite beer of the trip.

Wando’s —A less welcoming place, but at least the bar had a lot of people there—which is generally a good sign. What I loved best about this place is the grill was right behind the bar, and the smells produced from the cheeseburgers and fries really added to the experience.

Red Shed —A nice cozy place that’s been around since the 1950’s. This was the where older alums clearly came before the game. There were about eight people at the bar, I would guess safely that they were all older than me, and they were all wearing red.

Johnny O’s —The bad news about this place is that I bought a beer, and then the bartender told me the beers were half off so the next beer was on the house. I did not need the next beer. This bar was nice enough, but nothing special.

F ans: 4

I sat in the student section, and while I no longer have any illusions that I could pass as one of them, they made me feel right at home. I was hugged by one stranger, and had arms wrapped over my shoulder by another stranger as they sang.

Like any truly great student section, they have a moniker—“The Grateful Red.”

A ccess: 5

Parking is inexpensive and plentiful near the Kohl Center. Handicap accessibility is better than any Big Ten venue, and bathrooms are clean and large enough to avoid lines.

R eturn on Investment: 5

A trip to Madison for a Wisconsin basketball game (or hockey for that matter) is well worth the trip. I paid $20 for my seat about 12 rows up in the student section. You’ll enjoy the neighborhood, the facility, the energy of the fans, and certainly the cheese curds.

E xtra Points: 3

I’ll give the Kohl Center some extra points for the Chihuly artwork, On Wisconsin and the Grateful Red, and the proximity to an exciting downtown.

Final Thoughts:

If you can only make one trip to one Big Ten college basketball arena, I highly recommend the Kohl Center. Have a great time!

The Old Gym That is Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena

This article originally published on www.stadiumjourney.com

The first thing you need to know about Welsh-Ryan Arena is that it is not an arena. It’s a gym. I hope you understand that this distinction is a very good thing. You immediately feel the intimacy, and you know there is no bad seat. This cozy home of the Northwestern Wildcats seats 8,117 and has been their home since 1952.

FANFARE Score: 21 (out of 35)

Food and Beverage: 2

Make sure you get something before you come to Welsh-Ryan as there really isn’t anything available besides snacks and soda.

Atmosphere: 4

I mentioned earlier that there is no bad seat. Well that’s true from a viewing perspective, but there are actually a lot of bad seats. In fact, the worst part about the game is having to sit down. Welsh-Ryan is mostly filled with old school bleachers, and when you sit you’re immediately leg-to-leg with the people next to you, as well as having a knee in your back, and a back in your knee.

If you take nothing else from this review, please at least heed this piece of advice: Sit in sections 101-107 or 201-207. You’ll get an actual chair, and believe me, you’ll be glad you did. Adding to my discomfort was the elderly man sitting in front of me, who continually kept sliding off the bleacher, and deeper into my leg.

Now, that one (important) criticism aside, this was a great place to see a game. For my experience there were essentially two student sections—the Northwestern sections behind each basket, and the Illinois section up near me.

That led to an extremely charged atmosphere, made even greater as Illinois came back to steal a win from Northwestern who was tied or lead (literally) 39 minutes and 58 seconds. Demetri McCamey made a 12-foot bank shot with under two seconds to play, and the crowd erupted in my section, and sunk in the Northwestern section.

Neighborhood: 3

Prior to the game, I spent some time in beautiful downtown Evanston (about a mile or so from the gym). I began my night at Merle’s, a southwestern themed BBQ joint, where I enjoyed a half slab of Chicago style ribs, some creamy mac and cheese, and a Goose Island Honker’s Ale.

I then walked a few blocks to Tommy Nevin’s pub—which was filled with Illini fans, where I sat at the bar and tried a Rogue Yellow Snow Ale (which was a new beer for me, and very tasty). I liked Nevin’s quite a bit—good beer selection, and it felt like an authentic Irish pub, without seeming to try too hard.

Next, I made the short drive up to the Arena, making a stop at Bluestone Bar, which was completely packed. It’s remarkable that it’s the only bar within easy walking distance to Welsh-Ryan and the football stadium, Ryan Field. An entrepreneur would do well to open another establishment to handle the overflow.

I made one additional stop at Mustard’s Last Stand, for a Polish dog. Mustard’s is a small traditionally Chicago hot dog and hamburger joint with plenty of interesting local sports memorabilia and autographed photos on the wall. I would recommend each of the establishments I tried.

Fans: 3

Being a fan of a team that hosted the first NCAA tournament, yet has never participated in the big dance has got to be difficult. That being said, the Northwestern students bring good energy, and the school does a good job of getting them down on the court behind the baskets.

It’s unfortunate that the alumni and fans don’t fill up the rest of arena. Instead, rival school alumni are able to take away some of the edge of the home court advantage as there are usually plenty of tickets available.

Access: 4

Street parking is plentiful around Welsh-Ryan, and with only 8,000 fans rolling out, it’s generally easy to get going after the game. Restrooms are small so you may want to sneak out a couple of minutes before halftime.

Return on Investment: 4

With the exception of the discomfort of the seats, the experience of Welsh-Ryan is well worth the price of admission.

Etc: 1

One extra point for that old gym feel, something that makes college basketball games special.

Stadium Journey: Purdue Basketball's Mackey Arena

This review originally posted on www.stadiumjourney.com

FANFARE Score: 22 (out of 35)

Food and Beverage: 2

Not much here, and certainly not anything to write home about. Hot dogs, etc., can be found, and Coca-Cola products are offered. I did appreciate that they had souvenir cups available— always an easy way to take home a keepsake.

Atmosphere: 3

This is Indiana, and although Mackey lacks the charm of Hinkle Fieldhouse and the history of Assembly Hall in Bloomington, it still has that Indiana basketball feel. It’s a single bowl design with a raised floor, so sightlines are good no matter where you sit. I wish the students were a little closer to the action, as they feel somewhat removed.

The Purdue Pep Band

The band rates as average by Big Ten standards.

Neighborhood: 3

The one can’t-miss attraction has got to be Harry’s Chocolate Shop. When I arrived it was 10:45 a.m.— time for a drink. Our choice was a Boilermaker. Neither I nor my friend knew exactly what that was, but we figured this was the place to try one (it’s a shot of whiskey inside a beer, by the way). We had another beer and an order of homemade potato chips covered with Gorgonzola cheese.

Next, we decided to see a different venue in the city. Unfortunately, the other bars in the area were either closed or lacked any personality. So we found our way back to Harry’s for a sandwich and another beer. I would like to highly recommend Harry’s as a great place to come for a beer and some food when in West Lafayette. The downstairs section just oozes character, and I especially appreciated the "Ass Hole of the Week" picture, displayed in a toilet seat above the bar.

Fans: 4

I was lucky to see the fans with plenty of opportunities to be raucous. Coach Matt Painter received a technical foul to the end the half, which threw the crowd into a frenzy, and in the second half Michigan’s Manny Harris connected with an elbow to Chris Kramer’s nose, leaving behind a pool of blood— and some ramped-up Boiler fans.

It is clear that these fans love basketball and love their team.

Access: 4

I was able to find free parking about a half mile from the arena, and it was a breeze to get in and out of the arena and back on the road.

Return on Investment: 4

With great sightlines throughout, and reasonable prices, a trip to Mackey is well worth the investment. Parking is free and prices at neighborhood restaurants and bars are a good value. They team has been in or near the top 10 in the country for the past few years— all the more reason to go to a game now.

Etc.: 2

One point for the historically significant honoring of players who were consensus All-Americans with their numbers hung in the rafters, including legends such as Glenn Robinson, Joe Barry Carroll, Rick Mount, and John Wooden.

Another point for the raised floor, something I just love.

Historic Hinkle Fieldhouse

This article originally posted on www.stadiumjourney.com

When Hinkle Fieldhouse (then known as Butler Fieldhouse) opened in 1928, it was the largest basketball arena ever built. With a capacity of just over 11,000, it seems cozy by today’s standards.

It doesn’t get much better than basketball in the state of Indiana, and a trip to Hinkle may be the best way to experience that tradition.

FANFARE Score: 32

F ood & Beverage: 3

There’s nothing special inside to help sustain you. If you need a snack, there are hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, and candy available. Pepsi products are available, although I wish they were served in souvenir cups.

Lines are long, and refreshments can only be found on the ground floor, so if you need a snack make sure you get there early or sneak away from your seat in the timeout preceding halftime.

A tmosphere: 5

I felt a little bit like Jimmy Chipwood when I first entered, although it felt smaller than what was portrayed by the movie Hoosiers . Yes, perhaps the best sports film ever made, Hoosiers , filmed its final championship scenes in Hinkle. Watching that re-telling of the 1954 Milan “miracle” team is great preparation for your trip to a Butler home game.

Movie magic aside, this venue provides historical significance, and modern day excitement. It is without question an absolutely great place to see a game. The student section is small, sandwiching the court on both baselines, but the energy is pervasive. This, aided by a solid pep band and a ridiculously large cheerleading and dance squad.

N eighborhood: 4

It may be a little bit of a stretch to consider the area of College Avenue between 51st and 54th Streets part of the immediate Hinkle neighborhood. The walk is about a mile and a quarter, but there is a perfect mix of bars and restaurants to appeal to whatever it is you may be looking for.

Taste Café is a great place to stop in prior to an early weekend game if you want some breakfast. It’s a slightly trendy menu, but delivers delicious options. Just go to the counter to order, get your number, and find a seat. I tried the breakfast burrito, loaded with eggs, potatoes, chorizo, guacamole, and black beans served with a spicy homemade salsa. The service is extremely friendly and the coffee is hot and tasty.

The classic Butler hangout is Moe & Johnny’s at the corner of College and 54th. If you’re looking for a younger crowd and plenty of sports viewing, then this would be the place for a pregame or postgame drink. There are at least 20 HD screens in the bar, and the menu features all the bar fare you would expect. My only wish is that they offered some local beers, as Indiana produces a lot of quality brews.

If an English pub experience is more your speed, then The Aristocrat Pub is the place for you. They’ve got a great beer list, including some local options, and pub classics. I had the Fish & Chips and thought the fish portions were generous, and the fries were sub-par.

Finally, for anyone who wants a dive bar where they can belly up and have some cheap bottles, then The Red Key Tavern is the right choice for you. To be fair, they actually have a decent beer selection, and I found the service to be friendly.

Regardless of where you end up, leave yourself at least 30 minutes if you’re on foot, to get back in time for tip-off.

F ans: 5

I loved the energy, awareness, and knowledge of the Butler fans. First of all, they come in all ages. From the two-year-old girl dressed in her cheerleader outfit to the 80-year-old man complaining about an opponent’s illegal screen, everyone was focused on the basketball.

No cues are needed from the PA announcer or scoreboard. These fans know when to give their team a boost, in good times and in low times. I was incredibly impressed with these fans. The only surprise is that I was able to find a ticket less than a week before a game so easily, without going through a secondhand ticket broker.

A ccess: 5

Parking is free, whether you park in the main lot or one of the residential streets surrounding the Fieldhouse. Despite its age and narrow concourses, you can leave or enter efficiently, as they have several entrances and even more exits when the game ends. I was able to go from seat to being on the road in 10 minutes, and that included a quick trip to the bathroom.

R eturn on Investment: 5

I sat center court, about 20 rows up, for $30. I would have paid more for that experience. It’s important to note that the lower sections have actual seats, and any section numbered 20 or higher are bleachers. It can get a little uncomfortable sitting in a seat with no back, however, the first five rows of the 20’s sections have padded bleachers, making the experience more tolerable.

The gift shop is found in the concourse, and prices are reasonable if you want to take a souvenir from your experience. Lines are long and it gets a bit congested, but a “Spirit Shop” is under construction to move the gift shop out of the concourse.

E tc.: 5

During player introductions, the Butler starters run through a tunnel of high fives from teammates to finding a barking bulldog at the end. Each starter rubbed the dogs head, and when the team huddled up, the dog ran around the team continuing to bark in a playful manner. From there, the bulldog ran into the student section to grab a bone that looked to be about 2 feet long. It was a cool touch.

Other bonus points for being a historic landmark, being the backdrop for the Hoosiers finale, the incomparable fans, and for the goose bumps elicited.

Final Thoughts

Hinkle Fieldhouse is one of those magical sports venues that every sports fan should experience, especially college basketball fans. If I lived in Indianapolis, I would be a season ticket holder. That’s about as much praise as I can offer any stadium.

Conseco Fieldhouse: A Review by Stadium Journey

Article originally published on Stadium Journey

Located in the heart of Indianapolis, Conseco Fieldhouse is a great example of what a great NBA arena can look like.

Fan comfort, great sight lines, and a respect for team history are all major factors in making for an enjoyable basketball experience.

FANFARE Score: 32

F ood & Beverage: 4

The most disappointing aspect of the Food & Beverage offered at Conseco is the long lines that fans experience, especially in the upper sections of the fieldhouse.

I took a walk around the arena with about 8 minutes to go in the second quarter and lines were as long as 30 people deep. With 31 concessions stands, this has to be chalked up to poor management of staffing needs.

Once you make it to the front of the line, there will be plenty of appetizing options. Sausages by Johnsonville, and Donato’s pizza are favorites. There are also several restaurant options so fans can choose to arrive early for a game some dinner.

A tmosphere: 5

Conseco Fieldhouse effortlessly melds an old feel with modern amenities. It looks as if it is part of the neighborhood, yet from inside it seems massive. It begins with the main entryway, an expansive rotunda which can be accessed without a ticket.

In fact, it’s another place where the Pacers may be understaffed. The multiple lines for Will Call all had significant lines, so come early if you’re getting your tickets at the arena.

Once you reach your seat, you’ll find that every seat has a padded bottom, without being overly cushy, it’s a very comfortable place to park yourself.

From your seat, you have a great view of the court regardless our where you sit. I sat behind the basket, in a corner section about five rows from the top, and still felt as though I could see the action clearly.

When walking around the concourses, you’ll see an homage not only to Pacers history, but to the history of basketball in the state of Indiana, including very proud tribute to the ABA championships won by the Pacers in the early 70’s.

N eighborhood: 5

There are so many options within the immediate neighborhood, that you could have season tickets, and try a new place every game, and still not taste it all. For carnivores there are three outstanding options.

The all-you-can-eat, Fogo De Chao is a fine option, even if all you want is the salad bar. Morton’s Steakhouse, and the slightly more upscale Mo’s are great, but you probably need to be a bit more well-dressed to be comfortable.

As far as bars go, I can highly recommend Scotty’s both for its beer list, and for its voluminous menu, including bison burgers, and beef raised in Indiana.

On this particular mid-November evening, it was unseasonably warm so I was able to sit outside and listen to the blues band they had lined up for the night.

There’s plenty of screens inside, so with good beer, food, sports, and service, this is a prime place for either before or after Pacers games.

Across the street is Coaches, which bolsters that they have the best burger in the city. While I admit that their burgers are very good (try the All-Star burger with bacon and BBQ sauce) the service is so bad that I would never set foot in there again.

I’m a fairly tolerant customer, but when it takes 25 minutes for someone to take my order, then something’s wrong. The place was only half full, so I have to assume that this is a management issue.

Next door is O’Reilly’s, a typical Irish pub. There’s nothing outstanding to recommend other that solid work by their bartender, but it certainly could be a place to drop in for a drink or two.

F ans: 5

In my experience, NBA fans are notoriously reliant on cues to know when to cheer, or whatever else the puppeteer working the jumbotron would like to see. Pacers fans were a pleasant exception to this rule.

Not that there aren’t successful attempts at decibel manipulation, because there certainly is, but as a whole the crowd was loud and energetic without needing the constant prodding. This makes for a much better viewing experience, with less frenetic interjections.

A ccess: 5

Parking is a breeze in the area. I parked a couple blocks north at 35 North Pennsylvania, at a cost of only $3. In the lot adjacent to Conseco, spaces were going for $10, which still is a pretty good bargain.

With highways nearby, it was absolutely easy to get out of the downtown area after the game.

R eturn on Investment: 4

Tickets can be found starting at $20, and there are several souvenir options that are fairly priced. Food is priced right about where you would expect, and pricing is a bargain. Overall, the Conseco Fieldhouse experience is well worth it for what you pay.

E tc.: 4

The retro modern feel is unique for an NBA venue. The basketball history lesson found throughout the concourses is worth an extra point in my book, as do the fantastic seats, and wonderful neighborhood.

Final Thoughts:

It’s hard to imagine a much more complete arena experience than what one can find in downtown Indianapolis.

Michigan State's Breslin Center, a Stadium Journey Review

Review originally published on www.stadiumjourney.com

With the success that Michigan State has had over the past 20 years, it’s easy to see why the fans have become a ravenous crew. With high expectations and a devoted following, it’s easy to see why the Breslin Center is a great place to catch a college basketball game.

FANFARE Score: 25

Food & Beverage: 3

The food is pretty ordinary, although I did find a smoked turkey drumstick that was very good. Something about having a big stick of meat on the bone while you watch sports really gets you in touch with your inner-man.

Atmosphere: 4

To me, the most interesting and exciting aspect of the Breslin Center is the way that the student section wraps around the floor to create the “Izzone”. They give their students the very best seats, and the students pay back by being great fans. MSU also has a very good pep band that, clearly, adds to the frenzy of it all. The director had a very good grasp on when to play something to rile the crowd, and all of the selections seemed less formulaic than most Big Ten arenas.

Neighborhood: 3

Before the game, I found myself at the Harrison Roadhouse, about a mile from the Breslin Center. I figured the Big Ten burger was the appropriate choice, and I was able to substitute in buffalo meat, which was nice. I enjoyed a Bell’s Amber on tap.

After the game I stopped into Dublin Square, a slightly upscale Irish Pub. I had a corn beef sandwich, and a couple of beers, including a Black &Gold- similar to a Black & Tan, but made with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Guinness. Quite good.

Fans: 5

The wind was blowing pretty good, but since it was still early, I decided to take a lap around the facility. Even though it was cold, I was glad that I did. I ran into the statue of Magic Johnson on the other side of the building, and ended up at the gate for the student entrance.

I was impressed with the crowd waiting to get in. These people were already into it- and we were still almost 2 hours from tip off. It was a very impressive group of students.

Access: 4

I drove around a bit trying to find the appropriate lot, and ended up in a parking garage maybe a half-mile away. The venue seems a lot smaller once you are in the concourse, and bathrooms are plentiful enough.

Return on Investment: 3

As with most college basketball experiences, the price is well worth the cost to see a game. I was disappointed that there weren’t more souvenir shops with anything worth buying though.

Etc.: 3

I was lucky to be there for the retirement of Morris Peterson’s #42. The drumstick was worth an extra point, and I just loved the overall feel of sitting in the stands watching a good team and being surrounded by knowledgeable fans.

Final Thoughts:

The Breslin Center overall is a good place to see a game, but more for the ardent fans than for the facility itself. The architecture is rather bland with a lot of interior concrete, and I feel as though the seats are too spread back, making it seem larger than it really is.

Stadium Journey: Soldier Field

Review originally published on Stadium Journey

Since construction began in 2002, Chicago’s Solider Field has been a target of architectural controversy. Described by many as resembling a UFO that landed on the old Solider Field, the futuristic look has slowly gained at least partial acceptance from Chicagoans.

Although it did not become the permanent home to the Bears until 1971 (nearly 47 years after it opened), it is firmly seen as the home of the Bears. Soldier Field has hosted boxing title bouts, college football, soccer, and concerts, along with many more events over the years.

Today, fans can enjoy great seats throughout the stadium with views of the city, lake, and museum campus.

FANFARE Score: 28

F ood & Beverage: 4

Soldier Field smells great from the time you get a whiff of what’s cooking in the tailgating section, right up until you sit down in your seat. I started with an Asian culinary delight, Wow Bao.

Bao are doughy steamed buns with BBQ pork or Teriyaki chicken inside. There’s four to an order at the game for $8. It was the perfect taste to share as my friend and I walked around the stadium.

Next, I couldn’t resist the smell of BBQ everywhere so picked up a pulled pork sandwich. It was good, but didn’t blow my socks off.

I also had a Maxwell Street Polish dog, and didn’t have to worry about my stomach for the next three hours. My friend had a cheese pizza, which he described as above average.

To drink, you can find Miller products selling for $7.50 a piece, and many other interesting options going for $8. I would recommend keeping it local and going with a Goose Island Honker’s Ale. Coke products are available if you aren’t drinking alcohol.

A tmosphere: 5

Soldier Field is a reflective place. Around the stadium there are numerous statues, and placards, many of which are dedicated to the memory of those who have served their country over the years.

Each time the Bears score, the familiar tune of “Bear Down, Chicago Bears,” is played with the lyrics posted on the jumbo-trons in each end zone. It is a catchy and jubilant fight song, which all fans seem to enjoy.

Once inside Solider Field, the architecture becomes irrelevant, and it just a beautiful place to see a football game. It is the smallest stadium in the NFL (61,500 capacity), which makes for an intimate feel and good seats throughout.

N eighborhood: 4

Tailgating is definitely the norm for most Bears fans, and lots fill up early with people grilling, drinking, and playing various games. For people who want to stay indoors, the south loop of downtown Chicago is only about ½ mile away.

The Bongo room at 1152 S Wabash, offers up great breakfast, and is just a short walk to Soldier Field. If you’re a fan of Eggs Benedict, then you will almost certainly walk away happy.

If you are looking for drinks before or after the game, then try Kitty O’Shea’s, located inside the Hilton at 720 S Michigan. It’s about a mile walk to Soldier Field.

Also, keep in mind that alcohol can’t be served before 11am on Sundays in Chicago, so if you are doing pre-game drinking, you’ll have to order and drink fast to be in your seat by 12 noon kickoff.

Besides the numerous bars and restaurants in the area, Solider Field is also surrounded by museums, including the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, and Adler Planetarium. Further into downtown is the beautiful, Art Institute of Chicago.

If you want to spend some time on your feet, after a day on your rear end, any of these would be fine choices, and within walking distance.

F ans: 5

Sitting surrounded by Bears fans, was truly interesting. There was a real good variety of knowledgeable fans, fantasy football talk, cheering, and drunken buffoonery.

While I could have done without the drunken buffoonery, especially the Browns fan dressed in Ohio State garb that dumped half a beer on the head on the Bears fan in front of him, overall the fans were great.

My visit marked the 10th anniversary of the tragic death of icon Walter Payton. During a halftime tribute the religiosity of Bears fans was most purely felt.

Fans cheered during highlights of Payton as if they were happening live, and were absolutely silent when Walter’s widow, Connie Payton, said a few words.

A ccess: 3

Parking can be extremely expensive around the stadium, but there are other transportation options.

Anyone coming into the city by train can get off at the Roosevelt stop for the red, green, or orange lines and have about a 15-minute walk to the stadium. If you don’t plan on tailgating, I would seek out alternatives to parking in a stadium lot.

Bathrooms are fine, but can get a bit crowded during peek times like halftime (to no one’s surprise).

R eturn on Investment: 3

If you are lucky enough to snag tickets at face value, then the price won’t seem quite as bad. However, for me a $150 ticket in the upper half of a 400 section seemed like a bit much.

Add in the cost of the food and drink, and you approach $200 pretty quickly. Now, start to imagine doing this with a family of four, and there it is, your entire vacation budget for the year.

Food does not seem outrageous, and there are affordable ways to get around parking, but for the best value, a trip to Solider Field needs to be planned out well enough in advance to try and buy tickets when they first go on sale, rather than through second hand means.

E tc.: 4

Once you get over the UFO-landing look of the stadium additions (which I have by the way), then this is truly a beautiful stadium where it matters most, from the inside. There are great views and an intimate feel throughout.

This is a venue that has seen a lot over the years, and the facelift definitely did wonders for the place.

Stadium Journey's Best Baseball Stadium: 2009 Edition

In the first of what we hope will be an annual tradition, Stadium Journey is happy to announce its rankings for the best baseball stadium of 2009. Rankings are based on the FANFARE scoring system that takes into account Food & Beverage, Atmosphere, Neighborhood, Fans, Access, and REturn on investment. Click on the name of each stadium to see the full review.

One quick disclaimer about the list: We did not rate the Metrodome since it was to be out of commission by the time we completed our rankings, so Twins fans will have to wait for the 2010 edition when we can include the new Target Field.

So here are the rankings from worst to first, of MLB stadiums, 2009.

29. Florida Marlins, Land Shark Stadium

FANFARE Score: 14

What We Liked: Access—“Here’s the good news, parking is plentiful and there is never a line for the bathroom."

What We Didn’t Like: The neighborhood—“The closest place to go would be a Wal-Mart with a McDonald's inside, and that’s about a mile away.”

Land Shark Stadium

28. Washington Nationals, Nationals Park

FANFARE Score: 17

What We Liked: Food & Beverage—“The variety of food is impressive. It ranges from great local legends such as Five Guys (best burger you’ll ever have outside of a sit down restaurant, and better than most of those as well, fries are as addictive as heroin), Ben’s Chili Bowl, home of the legendary half-smoke sausage (think about the best kielbasa you ever had, only a hundred times better), and the Hard Times Café, to your traditional ballpark fare.”

What We Didn’t Like: The neighborhood—“Bad, unless you are fascinated by the D.C. water and sewer headquarters, or by the U. S. Department of Transportation, in which case you are definitely in luck!”

27. Oakland Athletics, Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

FANFARE Score: 19

What We Liked: Fans—“As with any small market team, fans tend to be tolerant, patient, knowledgeable and passionate about their players.”

What We Didn’t Like: The neighborhood—“The Coliseum is in the middle of a heavily industrial area, replete with a filthy canal.”

26. Toronto Blue Jays, Rogers Centre

FANFARE Score: 22

What We Liked: Food—“Rogers Centre has updated their concessions to include very unique items such as corned-beef sandwiches, chicken wings, and even sushi. The quality of food is vast and the prices are reasonable.”

What We Didn’t Like: Fans—“At times, it’s frustrating to watch fans more focused on when they should stand up so they can catch 'the wave' or when they are cheering loudly to win a piece of pizza rather than cheer on the home team itself.”

22(t). Los Angeles Angels, Angel Stadium

FANFARE Score: 24

What We Liked: Food & Beverage—“There are five different BBQ options at various points around the stadium. Chicken, ribs, sausage and hot dogs are among the options.”

What We Didn’t Like: Fans.

22(t). New York Mets, Citi Field

FANFARE Score: 24

What We Liked: Fans—“New York Mets fans are very passionate and knowledgeable about the game and many keep score and follow programs to track the players and the action on the field.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Neighborhood—“There are many auto body shops and oriental food markets in the immediate vicinity of the stadium.”

22(t). Kansas City Royals, Kauffman Stadium

FANFARE Score: 24

What We Liked: Return on Investment—“The Kansas City Royals have some of the most reasonable ticket prices;.They also run several family and group promotions while boasting frequent 'Buck Nights' which includes dollar hot dogs, peanuts and sodas. 'T-shirt Tuesday' leads the promotion wave, but recent surges in bobble-head and jersey giveaways have generated much attention and attendance.”

What We Didn’t Like: The neighborhood—“Don’t look for anything to do after the game in the area of the Truman Sports Complex.”

22(t). Milwaukee Brewers, Miller Park

FANFARE Score: 24

What We Liked: Fans—“During games, Brewers fans have a good sense of staying in their seats during game action (at least more so than most), and don’t need the mechanical prodding of a scoreboard to tell them when to cheer.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Neighborhood—“Miller Park is located about two miles from downtown Milwaukee. So while it probably isn’t considered walking distance for the average fan, it’s a close enough place to hang out before a game.”

21. Chicago White Sox, U.S. Cellular Field

FANFARE Score: 25

What We Liked: Atmosphere—“This is a great park to sit and watch a game. It’s also a great park if all you want to do is stroll around the concourse.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Neighborhood—“U.S. Cellular is not surrounded by many options, leading to more tailgating than many parks.”

19(t). San Diego Padres, Petco Park

FANFARE Score: 26

What We Liked: Access—“San Diego’s city design, renowned public transportation system, large parking structures around the stadium and police involvement before and after the game to re-route traffic make getting to Petco Park a cinch.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Atmosphere—“Visitors to Petco Park will be somewhat shocked that the people around them might not always be root, root, rooting for the home team. Southern California fans are notoriously bland, and Petco Park’s uber family-friendly confines make it so that even the rowdiest are forcibly muted amidst the apathy and onlooking kindergarteners.”

19(t). Seattle Mariners, Safeco Field

FANFARE Score: 26

What We Liked: Food & Beverage—“There are plenty of unique items around the ballpark, including garlic fries and shish-ka-berries, most notably.”

What We Didn’t Like: Fans—“The family-friendly environment that has been carved out is great if you’re over 50 or under 12, but can be a little frosty if you’re between those ages and/or you like alcohol.”

19(t). Cleveland Indians, Progressive Field

FANFARE Score: 26

What We Liked: Access—“Parking in the area is a breeze. There are a large number of lots around the stadium which have plenty of available spaces and are relatively easy to enter and exit. If you’re willing to endure a bit of a walk, you can park for $5, and even the lots immediately around Progressive Field usually cost no more than $10.”

What We Didn’t Like: Food & Beverage—“Progressive Field carries a standard selection of all the traditional fare you would expect to find at a ballpark, plus a few items not found at every sports venue.”

16(t). Tampa Bay Rays, Tropicana Field

FANFARE Score: 27

What We Liked: The Neighborhood—“Along the walk, you’ll not only find a history lesson, but a plethora of bars and restaurants that are worth a stop for a quick bite or drink. “

What We Didn’t Like: Fans—“One of the saddest things is when a fan-base abandons its team in the bad times (see the Pirates attendance). Even more depressing is when that fan-base fails to turn out when the times are good, and it’s easy to be a fan.”

16(t). Los Angeles Dodgers, Dodger Stadium

FANFARE Score: 27

What We Liked: Atmosphere—“There have been eight World Series held in Dodger Stadium: 1963, 1966, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1988, with the Dodgers winning four times.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Neighborhood

16(t). Houston Astros, Minute Maid Park

FANFARE Score: 27

What We Liked: The Fans—“It was a pleasant surprise to see that the fans were very knowledgeable and passionate for their team.”

What We Didn’t Like: Food & Beverage—“If you are going to eat, make sure you do it before you come to the game.”

13(t). Arizona Diamondbacks, Chase Field

FANFARE Score: 28

What We Liked: Return on Investment—“Chase Field offers some of the most affordable tickets in all of baseball. The Diamondbacks are nearly always among the lowest prices in MLB. There are value items available at concession stands and in the team shop to make it affordable to every fan.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Fans—“Most of the fans are transplants from other areas and there are times when they do not seem to know when to cheer.”

13(t). St. Louis Cardinals, Busch Stadium

FANFARE Score: 28

What We Liked: The Fans—“The passion and knowledge displayed by fans of the Cardinals are the main reasons why St. Louis is considered by some to be the best baseball city in America.”

What We Didn’t Like: Atmosphere—“This version of Busch Stadium certainly is a fun place to watch a game, but it can’t be said to be much different than any of the other throwback ballparks that have entered the league recently.”

11(t). Philadelphia Phillies, Citizens Bank Park

FANFARE Score: 29

What We Liked: The Fans—“There was even a guy with his face painted. In the third deck. At a BASEBALL game. Who paints their face for a baseball game?”

What We Didn’t Like: The Neighborhood—“Here’s the thing. There really is no neighborhood, per se.”

11(t). Detroit Tigers, Comerica Park

FANFARE Score: 29

What We Liked: Atmosphere—“A Ferris wheel, carousel, and massive center field water fountain are a few other structures that set Comerica Park apart from others.”

What We Didn’t Like: Food & Beverage—“Unless you’re seated in the infield, food and snack vendors appear sporadically.”

10. Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park

FANFARE Score: 29.5

What We Liked: The Neighborhood—“The area around Fenway is home to a multitude of bars and restaurants that provide endless entertainment both before and after the game. Whether you’re looking for a simple beer before entering the gates, a full-fledged meal, or music and dancing into the wee hours, you can find it within walking distance from the park.”

What We Didn’t Like: Access—“Driving to Fenway is really inadvisable. Parking is $30-40-plus and you will spend a significant amount of time waiting to get out of your car. You will spend even more time in your car as you try to leave the vicinity.”

6(t). Colorado Rockies, Coors Field

FANFARE Score: 30

What We Liked: The Neighborhood—“It doesn’t get better than than LoDo. There are tons of bars and restaurants all around the park. Many restaurants double as microbreweries, brewing their own specialty beers.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Fans—“Despite owning nearly every record for attendance, Rockies fans are the epitome of bandwagon. When the Rockies are playing well, people show up, when they are not doing well, forget about it.”

6(t). Pittsburgh Pirates, PNC Park

FANFARE Score: 30

What We Liked: Food & Beverage—“There is perhaps no better value than the absolutely delicious sandwiches that can be found at the Primanti Bros. stands at PNC Park. I tried the roast beef loaded with cheese, slaw, and fries right on the sandwich, and was about as happy as could be.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Fans—“…the fact that the team averaged fewer than 20,000 fans in 2009 is a real tragedy.

6(t). New York Yankees, Yankee Stadium

FANFARE Score: 30

What We Liked: Atmosphere—“While this isn’t "The House that Ruth Built” the field looks exactly the same as the old stadium, which makes you feel like you are still at the stadium across the street.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Neighborhood—“Unlike many of the other stadiums that are located in major cities, Yankee Stadium is not exactly in a built up area.”

6(t). Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field

FANFARE Score: 30

What We Liked: Atmosphere—“The history engulfs you immediately when you enter Wrigley. Although this stadium has never seen a World Series victory, it is the home to many legends and tales. From Babe Ruth’s called shot, to a goat named Murphy, to the Steve Bartman incident from the 2003 NLCS, this venue has seen its share of memorable events.”

What We Didn’t Like: Food & Beverage—“In a city rich with culinary delights, Wrigley Field fails to deliver, especially on Chicago classics that one may expect.”

4(t). Cincinnati Reds, Great American Ball Park

FANFARE Score: 31

What We Liked: Food & Beverage—“For the true Cincinnati experience, be sure to visit the Montgomery Inn for some pulled pork or chicken. There are three Skyline Chili locations for Cincinnati’s own Skyline Cheese Coney.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Neighborhood—“The area between Great American Ball Park and Paul Brown Stadium, the home of the Cincinnati Bengals, is prime real estate and ideal for development. However, a seemingly endless political battle has caused the former home of Riverfront Stadium to remain a construction site.”

4(t). San Francisco Giants, AT&T Park

FANFARE Score: 31

What We Liked: Food & Beverage—“There is a dizzying array of food—everything from garlic fries to crab sandwiches to standard ballpark franks and even a selection of California.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Fans

FANFARE Score: 32

What We Liked: Return on Investment—“Rangers tickets are among the most cost effective in baseball. Good seats are available for as little as $25 and the nose-bleed sections are closer to the action than most stadiums. Win or lose, Rangers fans always have a good time at the ballpark.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Neighborhood—“The current neighborhood around Rangers Ballpark is the only disappointment at the moment. There are a few options for before and after the game, but not a lot of them.”

2(t). Atlanta Braves, Turner Field

FANFARE Score: 32

What We Liked: Atmosphere—“The Braves organization is the longest continuously running franchise in baseball history and you can feel the history when you walk into the stadium.”

What We Didn’t Like: The Neighborhood—“There is not much around the stadium as far as food goes.”

Marlins' Land Shark Stadium Is the Worst Stadium in Baseball

This review was originally published on www.stadiumjourney.com.

When the Florida Marlins began their existence as a Major League franchise in 1993, it seemed as though the league had expanded to a perfect market. There was a diverse community of baseball lovers waiting to soak up the sun and take in a ball game.

Unfortunately, there was no baseball stadium for the team, so they became co-tenants with the Miami Dolphins in what was originally known as Joe Robbie Stadium. In 1996 it became Pro Player Stadium, then Dolphin Stadium in 2005, and finally Land Shark Stadium in 2009.

There is something inherently bad about seeing baseball played in a football stadium.

Currently construction is underway on a new facility that will be ready to play in in 2012. The Marlins organization is as anxious as the fans for this to occur, and they have a countdown when each game becomes official to inform fans of just how many more games have to be played in this less than ideal setting.

FANFARE Score: 14

Food & Beverage: 2

Heading into this stadium, I was excited for the Cuban delights that I expected at this ballpark. I was extremely disappointed. Because of the low attendance, the Marlins don’t open all of their vending stations for weekday baseball. The worst part about this is they offer food and beverage guides so you can read about everything you’re missing.

Specifically, the Everglades BBQ Company stands would have been a welcome sight. They reportedly offer pulled pork sandwiches, smoked turkey legs, and pulled pork nachos. I found no Cuban food available, and the remaining offerings were pretty pedestrian. The fries were decent. The pizza was worse than most.

However, I did find the mojito stand to be outstanding. With a choice of frozen or on the rocks, I would recommend getting the large size, as the small will only leave you wanting to go back for a second minty lime beverage.

Atmosphere: 2

It really is a shame that the Marlins don’t do more to highlight their success inside the ballpark. Their two World Series titles in their young history are showcased no more prominently than USC winning the Orange Bowl in this stadium. There are large areas dedicated to each decade since the stadium opened and some of the historic things that have happened, but it is not baseball-specific enough.

Partially because of the team’s inability to keep their talented players and sustain their success, there are only two numbers retired: Jackie Robinson’s No. 42 and Carl Barger's No. 5. Barger was the first team president who died of a brain aneurysm before the team played its first official game. They retired No. 5 in his honor.

Watching a game can be difficult as all seats were built to see a football game. Consequently, everything points towards the 50-yard line, which is just past the second baseman. Luckily the crowd is sparse enough that you can turn your entire body towards home plate.

Neighborhood: 1

When the new Marlins stadium opens in 2012 in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, things should change in this aspect of seeing a Marlins game. For now, there is nothing within walking distance from the game. The closest place to go would be a Walmart with a McDonald's inside, and that’s about a mile away.

Fans: 2

One thing you know about Marlins fans is they must really love their team if they bother to come to this venue to watch them play.

Unfortunately, there just aren’t that many fans who are there. The fans for the opposing team (Phillies in this case) outnumber the home fans by a 3-to-2 ratio. There are certainly some die-hards in the bunch, but not enough to elevate the fanbase from below average.

Access: 4

Here’s the good news: Parking is plentiful, and there is never a line for the bathroom. Traffic to and from the game does not seem very bad.

Unfortunately, there really is no other option than to drive. A taxi from any main tourist area of Miami will cost you $50 or more, and there are no public transportation options available.

Return on Investment: 2

Land Shark Stadium is not currently worth the price of admission. There is nothing remarkable about seeing a game at this stadium. There is nothing remarkable to eat. There is nothing remarkable about the location.

Extra Points: 1

Plenty of sunshine and a frozen drink can make this experience pleasant for a while.

Final Thoughts

The only scenario where I would recommend seeing a baseball game in this stadium is if you are one of those baseball travelers who wants to get as many stadiums under your belt as possible. If that’s the case, you’ve got until the end of the 2011 season to make your pilgrimage to south Florida.

For everyone else, wait until 2012 for the prospect of new and better things to come.

Second City's Second Ballpark

Article originally posted on www.stadiumjourney.com

Many long-time White Sox fans continue to refer to the park as Comiskey, but when U.S. Cellular Field is referred to as “The Cell,” it conjures up images of a dark and foreboding fortress. This image does not do the park justice. It is a wide open structure with great sight lines and large concourses that will be enjoyed by most fans of the great sport of baseball.

FANFARE Score: 25

F ood & Beverage: 4

The Cell’s food choices reflect the diverse neighborhoods that surround the park. Noticeably missing from this ethnic smorgasbord is a stand featuring Chinese food. While there are no items that are truly unique, most of the offerings are of above average quality, and the variety should keep most fans’ tummies happy.

The beer selection is limited, with only a few non-macro options, and no local options to speak of. Prices are generally ballpark reasonable.

A tmosphere: 4

This is a great park to sit and watch a game. It’s also a great park if all you want to do is stroll around the concourse. The views from the outfield are excellent, with some of the best bleacher seats in all of baseball. Statues of great Sox players line the outfield sections, including; Minnie Minoso, Carlton Fisk, Harold Baines, Luis Aparicio, and Nellie Fox.

The upper deck has always seemed a bit steep to me, so if you have any fear of heights you may consider springing for lower level seats.

Fireworks shoot from the scoreboard when a Sox player hits a home run, which is always fun for the kids, and adds to what is generally a festive atmosphere. Most importantly, this was home to a World Series in 2005, and the façade to the freeway still proudly announces that fact.

N eighborhood: 3

When compared to its northern neighbor, in Wrigleyville, this would seem like a ghost town. In truth, few neighborhoods compare to what the Cubs are fortunate to benefit from. Standing on its own, U.S. Cellular is not surrounded by many options, leading to more tailgating than many parks.

However, for a fan who doesn’t mind a little walking, there are some passable, if not good, options that can be found.

Schaller’s Pump, located less than a mile from the park, is a throwback that has been open since 1881. Don’t expect anything fancy, but if you want a filling meal, and a cheap beer on tap, then this may be the place for you. Make sure you hit the ATM beforehand as they only accept cash. This is the hangout for old school Sox fans. Behind the bar there are pictures of old time baseball legends, making you feel nostalgic in preparation for a game. Definitely a good spot to check out for pre-game.

Another great spot is Cobblestones Bar and Grill. They offer free parking during White Sox games with a $20 minimum purchase. It’s less than a mile walk to the park. If you plan on drinking before the game or just getting one of their Muffaletta sandwiches, this is the recommended place to stop. The sandwich is big enough for two people for only $8. They offer only three beers on tap, but do a good job of offering a local option, and lighter option, and a cheap option (Pabst).

F ans: 4

I really think that Sox fans are some of the best around. I noticed better than average courtesy when it came to walking around during action, and most fans were very much into the game. Parking lots were rather full close to two hours before the game with tailgaters enjoying the comfortable fall weather.

The vast majority of fans stayed for the entire game. While there has been a reputation that Sox fans can be a motley and raucous crew, I found the stands to be fine for a family atmosphere, and for the experienced and knowledgeable baseball fan.

A ccess: 4

There is plenty of parking, but it is more expensive than most, with many spots going for $25. The park is easily accessible by taking the red line train from downtown to the 35th /Sox stop, but can be really crowded right after a game.

R eturn on Investment: 4

With the exception of parking, most items are very reasonable. Most notably, the White Sox offer extremely affordable tickets. They also offer half price tickets on Mondays, which hopefully will continue in 2010.

E xtra Points: 2

Extra points for the array of historical statues, and scoreboard fireworks.

Final Thoughts:

While Wrigley Field gets most of the attention in Chicago, U.S. Cellular Field is definitely worth checking out. In some ways it can be considered the anti-Wrigley. Most importantly though it’s a great place to watch one of baseball’s most historically significant teams.

Journey to Miller Park

Article originally posted on www.stadiumjourney.com

Miller Park is such an improvement over County Stadium that it’s hard to know where to begin. First of all, having a retractable roof was a great idea and something that Minnesota fans will be envious of in the years to come.

Additionally, the Brewers organization has made an effort to make the experience at Miller Park as fan-friendly as possible, whether you are a kid, a casual baseball fan, or an ardent baseball fan. All fans will have fun at Miller Park.

FANFARE Score: 24

Food & Beverage: 4

The expectations must be high anytime you have a race featuring food items at your stadium. That being said, I was a little disappointed by the options at Miller Park. Don’t get me wrong, the selection is still better than most parks. Yes, there are sausages, and plenty of Miller products. There are also the best soft pretzels around.

When I ordered a soft pretzel with salt only, the girl preparing it rolled her eyes. I asked if I should get more toppings, and she told me that most people do. I asked to add garlic and she sighed. I asked, “How many toppings will it take for you not to be disgusted?” She said, “One more. They’re free you know.”

I was happy to find more than just Miller Lite at the Park, especially the wide selection of Leinenkugel. Overall, there is plenty to like in this department.

Atmosphere: 3

The Brewers haven’t had a lot of success in their history, nor have they had an abundance of it since moving to Miller Park in 2001. It’s hard to find the history here. A team that began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 became the Brewers the next year.

What the park lacks in historical significance, it makes up for in joyful silliness. Bernie the Brewer slides down his slide in left field after every Brewer home run, and the sausage race has become nearly as iconic as singing the seventh inning stretch.

Speaking of the stretch, the Brewers pair it with the singing of “Roll out the Barrel,” which is frankly just as fun to sing, even if it’s not exactly a baseball classic.

Neighborhood: 3

Miller Park is located about two miles from downtown Milwaukee. So while it probably isn’t considered walking distance for the average fan, it’s a close enough place to hang out before a game.

If you want to get the full German experience while in Milwaukee, I would recommend Mader’s. It’s a great place for a pregame knockwurst and boot full of beer.

The nearest bar scene to Miller Park can be found about a mile to the south. There are really two offerings here. Fourth Base is where you want to go if you want some food before the game. The kitchen is found right behind the bar, and it smells like delicious grease of steaks, burgers, and fries.

After you’re done at Fourth Base, walk east, to Mollica’s. This is a dive bar, usually filled with true Brewers fans. Best of all, they offer a shuttle right to Miller Park, making the mile walk a lot easier to deal with.

Fans: 4

One thing to point out about Brewers fans, is that they are one of the few fan-bases that turn out in good numbers to tailgate before baseball games. Hours before a game you can find the parking lot filling up and the smell of grills heating encased meats.

During games, Brewers fans have a good sense of staying in their seats during game action (at least more so than most), and don’t need the mechanical prodding of a scoreboard to tell them when to cheer.

Access: 3

Parking will not be a problem, as there are plenty of lots surrounding the stadium, and they are right off the freeway, so the toughest part will be navigating yourself out of said parking lot.

Bathrooms are abundant enough to prevent gridlock

Return on Investment: 4

Miller Park is especially worthwhile for families. I went most recently with my wife and two-year-old son, and there were multiple play areas for the kids that he really enjoyed. Additionally, there were photo opportunities sitting in a giant mitt, or with Brewers’ stars Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun. That doesn’t even mention Bernie and his slide, or the famed sausage race.

Tickets are fairly priced and views are good regardless of where you sit.

Etc.: 3

Unique aspects include the sausage race (the original mascot-themed race), Bernie’s slide, and the fantastic look to the park, even when games are played indoors.

Final Thoughts

Miller Park is an easy day anyway you slice it. It isn’t the best park, the most beautiful park, or the most historic park. But it is the kind of place where you can sit back with a beer and a sausage and take in some baseball. And isn’t that the point?

Pittsburgh's Perfect PNC Park

Article originally posted on www.stadiumjourney.com

Pittsburgh’s beautiful PNC Park receives accolades as being one of the best of the 21st century ballparks.

There is no doubt that the Pirates did everything right. Location, scenery, and fitting tributes to the Pirates' rich history are all done just right. Unfortunately, what’s missing is the product and patrons.

The Pirates completed their 17th consecutive losing season in 2009 and have not cracked the 70-win plateau since 2004. Despite its beauty, the lack of a contending team has left the stands relatively empty and has deprived this treasure of the full appreciation that it richly deserves.

FANFARE Score: 30

Food & Beverage: 5

There is perhaps no better value, than the absolutely delicious sandwiches that can be found at the Primanti Bros. stands at PNC Park. I tried the roast beef loaded with cheese, slaw, and fries right on the sandwich, and was about as happy as could be.

The sandwich cost a very ballpark-friendly seven bucks. I added a whole pickle for another $1.50, and settled in. There are plenty of local beer choices, which is always nice. Penn City Lager and Iron City Lager each went for a reasonable $7.50 a beer.

The upside of having few fans at games is that food lines are short and easy to get through at any time during a game, so no need to sneak out mid-inning to avoid a wait.

Atmosphere: 4

Built in 2001, this is a new park that is yet to see a season to remember. However, the Pirates organization does a good job of honoring its past with prominent statues of Willie Stargell and Roberto Clemente guarding each main entrance.

The right field wall is exactly 21 feet high in honor of Clemente’s retired number 21. Additional Pirates with retired numbers include Billy Meyer (No. 1), Ralph Kiner (No. 4), Willie Stargell (No. 8), Bill Mazeroski (No. 9), Paul Warner (No. 11), Pie Traynor (No. 20), Honus Wagner (No. 33), and Danny Murtaugh (No. 40).

The Pirates honor Negro League stars with statues in Legacy Square including the great Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson.

Neighborhood: 5

Located just across the Roberto Clemente Bridge from downtown Pittsburgh, there are plenty of options for bars and restaurants prior to a game or after. Mullen’s Bar & Grill is located just across the street from PNC Park and is a great hangout for either Pirates or Steelers games.

The Pigskin burger is ingeniously covered with a thick slice of hickory smoked ham and provolone cheese. It’s definitely worth the extra dollar over the Bucco Burger, which is essentially just a regular cheeseburger with a Pirate tribute name.

You can continue to drink locally by selecting an Iron City beer on tap. Also, the servers at Mullen’s are great, so I high recommend stopping in. The Grille on Seventh is a nice spot if you want to stay on the city side of the bridge. This is a great place to try the classic Pittsburgh pierogies. The Grille also has decent drink specials and an overall tasty menu.

Fans: 3

I am a bit torn on how to rate fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates. On the one hand, anyone who comes out to see a team this bad must really love their team and the game of baseball. This is evident from the conversations you hear around the park (and you can hear a lot of conversations given all of the empty space).

On the other hand, the fact that the team averaged fewer than 20,000 fans in 2009 is a real tragedy. The family I sat near drove four hours for a 12 p.m. start, and spent most of the game discussing where the outfielders were playing in relation to what kinds of pitches were being thrown—pretty intelligent. So the quality is there. Now they just need to attract the quantity.

Access: 4

Forget about waiting in line for a bathroom. Parking can be a little bit trickier. There are plenty of parking garages across the river, which are very cost effective, but it does leave a bit of a hike.

If you don’t mind walking, this is a great way to approach the park, crossing the Roberto Clemente Bridge. Otherwise, there is parking located on the other side of the river in the North Shore lot.

Return on Investment: 5

PNC is truly one of the best venues in baseball, and should not be missed. Tickets are affordable, as is food and beverage inside the park. The term "worth every penny" does not do the experience justice, as I would have gladly paid more to spend time in this beautiful park.

Etc.: 4

For its tribute to its past, the fabulous view of the Pittsburgh skyline, and the overall affordability, I give an additional three points. For the fourth bonus point, you need to leave the stadium, and make the 5-10 minute drive into Oakland. There you will find not only the vibrant University of Pittsburgh campus, but also the remnants of historic Forbes Field.

Only the outfield wall is left in a non-descript garden area, but standing near it, you can’t help but visualize Bill Mazeroski’s game-winning home run in the seventh game of the 1960 World Series. Absolute goose bumps. Keep your eyes peeled and set your GPS to 230 S. Bouquet Street. You won’t be disappointed.

Final Thoughts: I can’t help but hope for better times for the Pirates organization and their fans. In the meantime, take advantage of the spaciousness of PNC Park. It has a little ballpark feel that is unmatched by its contemporaries.

Tropicana Field, a Pleasant Surprise

Tropicana Field Exterior

This article was originally published on www.stadiumjourney.com

At first glance, an enclosed baseball field in the middle of the Sunshine State would seem to be an improper way to honor the national pastime. However, the stadium experience is much more than the playing surface and the difference between ceiling and sky. It’s the appreciation for history and the surrounding neighborhood that makes Tropicana Field not only special, but a must see.

FANFARE Score: 27

Food & Beverage: 4

With several restaurants and plenty of vendors around the concourse, there is a lot to like at the Trop. There are the obvious beer choices, with some interesting options interspersed. While not a food option, the cigar bar is both unique for baseball stadiums, yet true to its Floridian roots.

It’s hard to stay in your seat, with all of the options available. So go on and wander around and try some of the delights available.

Centerfield Street Brewhouse

Atmosphere: 4

A common misconception is that building a dome was the wrong decision for the Rays franchise. The truth is that without the dome there would be rain delays, and rainouts to contend with, not to mention the exasperating humidity that would saturate the fans. The dome was the right choice. And although the aesthetic of Astroturf is a turn off for many fans, there is a lot to like indoors.

For one, the relocation of the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame is a distinguishing addition. With great photographs and memorabilia, it’s worth the walk upstairs. The Hitters Hall of Fame began with the induction of the 20 greatest hitters of all time, according to the Splendid Splinter in 1995. Since then, 39 additional hitters have been added, making it a must see for any baseball history buff.

Neighborhood: 5

There is a perfect pre-game walk that links the past with the present in the history of Florida baseball in the St. Petersburg area. Less than a mile from Tropicana Field sits Al Lang Stadium, named after the former mayor that helped to draw Major League teams to Florida for spring training each year. A walk north from Al Lang to Central Avenue will start you along the Baseball Boulevard, marked with placards shaped like home plate, explaining the history of baseball in the area.

Al Lang Placard

Along the walk, you’ll not only find a history lesson, but a plethora of bars and restaurants that are worth a stop for a quick bite or drink. The first stop should be the Ceviche Tapas Bar and Restaurant attached to the Ponce de Leon Hotel. Have some sangria or a beer, and a couple of tapas before you head along your way.

The next stop should be the Central Avenue Oyster Bar for some raw oysters or other fresh seafood. It’s a quiet, jazzy place. Far from being a baseball hangout, it can be a good place to begin.

Central Avenue Oyster Bar

Solid chicken wings and 16 beers on tap, Paddy Burke’s Irish Pub, just south of Central Avenue on 4th Street, is another great stop. Outstanding bartending is part of the key to this being a good place to hangout, and its far enough away from the stadium (about ½ mile) that it won’t get crazy before or after a game.

Paddy Burke's Irish Pub

The official Rays bar has got to be Ferg’s, just a couple of blocks from Tropicana Field. There’s indoor and outdoor seating available, with the standard bar fare and drink selection. In a word Ferg’s can be described as big, which is either good or bad depending on your interpretation. The greatest draw here is its proximity, so take it or leave it.

A final destination for your consideration is the Ciderhouse with an excellent beer selection, and a good place to debate sports at the bar.

Fans: 3

It’s disappointing that Rays fans haven’t become more ardent after the team’s success making the 2008 World Series. The stadium remains half full on a good night. One of the saddest thing is when a fanbase abandons its team in the bad times (see the Pirates attendance). Even more depressing is when that fanbase fails to turn out when the times are good, and it’s easy to be a fan. Here’s wishing Rays fans come back soon with more fervor.

Access: 4

Parking can be had for as little as $5 near the stadium, or if you are willing to walk you can find it for free near Al Lang Stadium. You won’t deal with lines for food or for bathrooms.

Empty Bathrooms at Tropicana Field

Return on Investment: 4

The tickets are one of the best values in baseball, and I would have happily paid more. The food can be a bit overpriced at times, but not that much more than what one can expect at most stadiums. The free admission to the Ted Williams Museum, makes this an outstanding value.

Extra Points: 3

The Rays tank is certainly unique, and even though the outside seems unappetizing, what lies within is a true gem.

Final Thoughts:

You’ll be surprised how much you’ll like Tropicana Field. What seems like an inadequate and ugly facility, is really a inspiring treasure for baseball fans. I look forward to my next trip to Florida and its abundance of sunshine, but mostly, I’ll be excited to get indoors, to catch a Rays game.

With No Baseball Drama Football Rules September

As September 17th becomes September 18th, I realize that I can no longer watch baseball with any true interest in the results.

Look, I love baseball. I love the speed, the colors, and the smell of peanuts against grass and spilled beer.

If you live or root for San Francisco or Colorado, maybe you still have that joy that comes with the unknown. And maybe folks in Arlington and Minneapolis still feel the hope that maybe their team can go on a 10 game winning streak.

For me, I seem to just be biding my time. Waiting, for the next football game.

I know that October will bring new passion for the game that I love so much. For now, I'll just hunker down, and crawl my way through the next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday that come my way.

Paul Swaney is the co-founder of www.stadiumjourney.com

World Series is New York Yankees to Lose

Something finally occurred to me. This Yankees team is good.

No, more than good. This is a great team.

For some time I have been thinking the Dodgers, Phillies, and Angels all looked better to win the Series.

I was wrong. This Yankees team has it all.

They should easily win 100 games for the first time since 2004.

The Yankees have hall of famers at third, short, catcher, and closing in the bullpen. They have a core of reliable starters. Mark Teixeira is one of the top 10 hitters in baseball. Robinson Cano gets better seemingly every day. Phil Hughes has become a reliable set-up man.

There seems to be a common belief building that the best team in baseball no longer wins the World Series. That will end this year, as the dynasty appears to be back.

11 Great World Series, Geographically Speaking

There is nothing better to me than watching a World Series with more than a championship on the line. When there is bragging rights at stake as well, within a state, city, or region, then it becomes so much more for the fans.

This slide show will recount the last 10 of these match-ups, and make predictions for the future.
Begin Slideshow

Who Had the Bride Idea Richard Jefferson's Wedding Woes Are Any of Our Business?

For some reason, I have been especially annoyed by the recent onslaught of stories relating to Richard Jefferson and his fiancée calling off their wedding.

Mostly, I just feel like life happens to all of us. Whether we are NBA players or MBA students, we shouldn't have to deal with public scrutiny when it comes to our personal lives.

The counter case that may be made is that Jefferson is a celebrity because he plays in the NBA, and as such, his entire life is fairly under a microscope.

I have had the honor of performing two wedding ceremonies as a minister (certified via the Internet). The experience of being married is both extremely joyful and stressful to the intended bride and groom.

It's a lifelong commitment, and if the individuals involved are unwilling or unable to fulfill their vows, then I fully support their choice not to marry.

More importantly, in this context, it's none of your damn business and should not be included in the "sports" news of the day.

If you don't know about this story, then I urge you to respect the privacy of those involved and move on with your life without further snooping.

To be fair, it's what Richard Jefferson should do for you if you're ever in the same situation.

Three Sports, Three Days, One City: Boston

With the release of the 2009-2010 NHL schedule yesterday, we had the opportunity to turn our minds to one of my favorite times of the year. The first weekend in October marks a period where it can be possible to attend an MLB, NHL, and NFL game all in the same city (and/or suburbs of a city) in one long and glorious weekend.

What's better than just burying yourself in sports for an entire weekend? Especially in one of the most beautiful and historic cities in America. Go ahead, buy your tickets. You only live once!

On Friday, October 2nd, you can catch the second game of the final series of the 2009 regular season for the Red Sox. They're playing Cleveland, and while the game won't mean a thing for the Indians, it may very well be an extremely meaningful game for Boston.

Fenway is my absolute favorite ballpark, and sitting in the stands in October with a Sam Adams in one hand and a cup of chowder in the other just feels about as good as I can imagine.

Saturday night you can head over to TD Banknorth Garden (ugh) to catch the Bruins and up-and-coming goalie, Tim Thomas. It will be the Bruins second game of the season, against the offensively charged Carolina Hurricanes.

Finally, on Sunday, October 4th you should wake up early and make the short drive to Foxboro for some tailgating and a great matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. This may very well be a preview of the AFC Championship game.

Enjoy the spectacle that is Tom Brady versus Ray Lewis.

Mostly, enjoy sports. Because this is one big fat weekend of sports loving fun!

Suggesting New Roster Selection for All-Star Game

Enough is enough with the controversy over All-Star selection.

I've grown tired of the constant debate over snubs, fan ballots, and roster size, and on and on and on.

I would like to see the adoption of selection by team winning percentage.

This is a team game after all, is it not?

My proposal is simple, if you are a member of a fifth or sixth place team, then you will not be making the all-star game under any circumstance.

This year, it would have meant no all-stars for Baltimore, Cleveland, Washington, Houston, Pittsburgh, or Arizona.

There is some inequity with this plan as it means that the American League West would always be represented.

To atone for that inequity, any last place team that has a better record than the last place team in the west (Oakland this year) would be able to place their best player on the roster.

The allocation for the remaining teams would be as follows:

First place teams-four players

Second place teams-three players

Third place teams-two players

Fourth place teams-one player

This gives each league a roster size of 30. That's plenty of players to compete in a baseball game.

Stop trying to play everyone and put together a team.

Ten Baseball Players Who Barely Made It into the Hall of Fame

Jim Rice finally eked into the Hall of Fame with 76.4% of the vote on the most recent ballot. It made me wonder if anyone has ever made the Hall of Fame with less support (you need 75% of the vote to get in).

It just so happens that there are nine other players who received as little or less support than Rice. That just cries out for a top ten list.

Here it is, with some surprises along the way, the least supported hall of famers of all-time.
Begin Slideshow

The Keys to Detroit Tigers Maintaining Winning Edge

With the All-Star game quickly approaching, the Detroit Tigers have to feel confident with their lead in the American League Central. The key for the Tigers this year has been their pitching and defense. Beyond the resurgence of Justin Verlander, Detroit has had all-star caliber contributions from Edwin Jackson and Rick Porcello in the starting rotation.

Overall the Tigers are second in hits allowed, third in runs allowed, third in fielding percentage, and third in double plays turned. Clearly pitching and defense is the backbone.

In the bullpen, Fernando Rodney has already set a career high in saves, and there is plenty of depth with Joel Zumaya and Brandon Lyon, who could fill the closer role if there is an unexpected injury. Bobby Seay has handled the role of lefty specialist with consistent excellence.

The solid pitching, combined with outstanding defense, has the Tigers riding high. However, there are still areas for concern for Detroit. For one, the Tigers are 12th in the American League in walks allowed, entering play on Tuesday.

The greatest offender has been fourth starter, Armando Gallaraga, who has 33 walks allowed in 73 innings pitched this season.

In general, the bottom of the rotating has been a weak spot for Detroit. While it's hard to realistically expect fourth and fifth starters to be consistent winners, the Tigers will need one other starter to step up with they want to maintain their standing atop the division.

The answer may lie in the bullpen with long reliever Zach Miner. Miner is 4-1 this season, and has looked good during limited work.

In the hitting department, Curtis Granderson, Brandon Inge, and Miguel Cabrera have been the stars of the line-up. Combined the trio has 47 of the team's 78 home runs.

Other than those three, the Tigers line-up has not roared too much. Magglio Ordonez has been sapped of his power and battled injuries.

The young left-handed hitting clones of Josh Anderson, Jeff Larish, Clete Thomas, and Don Kelly have failed to produce a consistent fourth option. Marcus Thames has the capability to put up big power numbers.

In the final analysis, the biggest need for this team is a left fielder who can produce runs. Matt Holiday would be a nice option, and so would Carlos Lee if the Astros decide to deal.

My outlook for the Tigers has them winning the weak, but even, Central Division. I see them playing the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs and bowing out in five games.

Darrell vs. Dwight: Who Was the Better Evans?

Growing up, I was always a Tigers fan. The 1984 World Series title was my indoctrination to baseball. I would pretend to be Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Kirk Gibson, Chet Lemon, and Lance Parrish were all heroes.

An underappreciated member of the Tigers in the mid-1980s was Darrell Evans. A man who played with Hank Aaron, Evans was the first player to hit 40 or more home runs in both the National and American Leagues. In 1973, he, Aaron, and Davey Johnson each hit at least 40.

Darrell was able to collect 40 home runs in 1985, leading the American lead in that category at the ripe age of 38.

By the 1986 World Series there was no doubt that I was in love with baseball. The Red Sox were one of the teams I liked. In part because they were the Tigers' opponent in the first game I saw live, in 1985 at Tiger Stadium.

I can't say that Dwight Evans ever caught my eye other than his unusual crouched batting stance. My neighbor, Johnny DeVol and I often played one on one baseball, alternating between who got to be the Tigers. The Red Sox tended to be the consolation prize, and we would try to imitate each batter to perfection.

All of these recollections came up recently when a friend and I were debating same name greatness. Hanley Ramirez or Manny Ramirez? Joe Jackson or Reggie Jackson? Darrell Evans or Dwight Evans?

In comparing the two, it really is a close call. Darrell played in 81 more career games, depositing 29 additional balls over the fence (414 to 385). Dwight had a better batting average (.272) and OBP (.370) compared with Darrell's .248 and .361.

Darrell lead the league in walks twice (1973 and 1974) and totalled 1605 for his career. Dwight lead the league in walks three times (1981, 1985, 1987), but only had 1391 in his career.

Dwight had the better glove, winning eight gold gloves. Although Darrell had the edge in versatility, playing third, first, and some outfield during his tenure.

Darrell is the owner of a World Series ring. Dwight played for Boston pre-2004.

In the end, if you have to pick one Evans, Dwight probably has the better overall career numbers and was the better run-producer.

Of course, neither is a member of the Hall of Fame. The only Evans in Cooperstown is Bill Evans, an umpire inducted in 1973.

Ranking the Second Place Teams Most Likely to Make the Playoffs

With about 100 games to go in the regular season, there is plenty of time for shake-ups atop each division. In this brief slide show I rank each second place team on their chances to reach the top at season's end.

There is something compelling about a season with 100 games left. Anything can happen, and your guess is as good as mine.
Begin Slideshow

Appreciate Albert Pujols' Greatness in the Here and Now

When selecting superlatives like "the greatest player of all-time," there's a natural tendency to look back to the past. Without considering a player's full body of work, we are hesitant to bestow honors better left for a day in the distant future.

I think this nostalgic approach deters our ability to appreciate what is right in front of us at the present time.

When I went to a Cubs-Cardinals game in April, I snapped the above photo in an attempt to get a shot of my favorite player of all-time, Cubs bench coach Alan Trammell.

Looking at the photo today, it seems like an apt analogy. As we look back at the past, we may ignore what our attention should have been focused on all along: Albert Pujols is in the midst of his ninth season as a big leaguer. Each season has been a remarkable display of consistent dominance.

If you take his lowest total from each major statistical category, his line would look like this:

32 home runs, 103 RBI, 177 hits, 99 runs, and a .314 batting average

Yeah, that would be a bad year.

At his current pace this season, Pujols would finish with 50 home runs, 135 RBI, 178 hits, 119 runs, and a .319 batting average. He's also on pace to steal a career-high 21 bases.

Pujols will only be 29 years old when the last pitch of the World Series is thrown. While it is hard to predict what may happen in the future, my guess is that the end of the 2009 season is a great mid-point in the career numbers of Pujols.

If you accept this premise for a moment, then we're looking at historic numbers: 738 home runs; 2,224 RBI; 3,418 hits; 2,132 runs; and a .334 batting average.

Those numbers certainly put him in the conversation among the greatest of all time. Pujols has shown defensive versatility by starting at least one game at every position except center field, catcher, and pitcher. He's also shown defensive greatness, winning a gold glove in 2006.

Let's be honest---all we can do is speculate on the future. Concentrate on the present with Albert Pujols as we are watching the best to ever play the game.

The Bronze Medal in Baseball Records

They are records many of us know well. We know who holds the record, and we know who they passed, or who came in second. But let's test your knowledge. Do you know who is third place for these career stats?

Hits, RBI, wins, saves, and stolen bases. See how many you can get before you read ahead in the article...

While you think about it and before I move on, let's reflect on the most famous bronze medalist in baseball—Mr. George Herman Ruth.

Asterisks or not, Babe Ruth moved down to No. 3 when Barry Bonds belted career homer No. 715.

Hits

Pete Rose passed Ty Cobb with career hit No. 4190 on Sept. 11, 1985 at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. Rose went on to play one more season as a player/manager in 1986. He retired with 4,256 hits.

The third place career finisher is Hank Aaron. His home runs and RBI often get him overlooked for his ability to get hits and hit for average (.305 for his career). Aaron's 3,771 hits put him comfortably ahead of fourth place finisher Stan Musial.

The active leader, by the way, is more than 1,000 hits behind Aaron. Ken Griffey Jr. has 2,711 entering play on Thursday.

RBI

Not surprisingly, Aaron and Ruth occupy the top two slots for career RBI. My guess for third place was Lou Gehrig, and you may have thought the same. Gehrig however, is in fifth place, one behind Bonds with 1,995 career RBI. The only other member of the 2,000 RBI club besides Aaron and Ruth was the Chicago Cubs' Cap Anson.

Anson had 2,076 career RBI, and did so while only hitting a career 97 home runs. He led the league in that category eight times, with a high mark of 147 in 1886.

Wins

Young's 511 wins is perhaps the most memorable number in baseball. Right up there with 406, 56, and 755.

The second name on the list is well known, Walter Johnson had 417 wins.

In this case we have two bronze medal winners as Pete Alexander and Christy Mathewson each finished their baseball playing days with 373 wins. If you got one of those names, give yourself credit for a correct answer.

Saves

Trevor Hoffman became the all-time saves leader in 2006, so it shouldn't be that hard to remember who he passed. I didn't remember, did you?

Hoffman currently stands at 568 career saves and is flourishing in Milwaukee when many said he was washed up.

Mariano Rivera stands in second place, chasing the 500 save milestone. Rivera got his 494th save on Thursday against the Rangers.

Did you remember the third place fireman yet? It's Lee Smith, the Louisiana-born giant who ended his career with 478 game saving appearances.

Stolen Bases

Not only was I unable to come up with this name, I had no idea who this guy was until I read up on him on baseball-reference.com.

We all remember when Rickey Henderson stole third base, and then removed the base from the dirt and held it above his head upon passing Lou Brock in the record books. Brock's career total was 938. Henderson, and his seemingly never-ending career, totalled 1,406.

That number, 1406, is rarely referenced among the elite baseball numbers or the unbreakable records, but when you think about it, only Young's 511 may be more untouchable.

If you guessed Ty Cobb for this bronze medal you would be wrong. The third place man in this case is Billy Hamilton. Hamilton played 14 seasons with the Kansas City Cowboys, Phillies, and Boston Beaneaters.

Yeah, that was a long time ago. Hamilton stole over 100 bases in a season three times, and led the league five times during his career.

So there it is. You can now go one name deeper the next time you get quizzed. Got any other famous third place finishers?

As baseball fans, we love statistics, and there are certain milestones that make our mouths water. Take a look at my list of ten big milestones coming soon to a ballpark near you. These are in order of how soon they may happen.

I've also provided some projected dates in case you want to get tickets, as well as a little trivia. I hope you enjoy.
Begin Slideshow

A.L. All-Star Voting: Tampa Bay Should Represent Left Side Of Infield

I finally felt ready to begin my all-star voting ballots today. I hate that the ballots were available in April, but usually by around Jun. 1, I feel like the sample size is enough to pass judgment.

All-star game voting is something I take very seriously. I believe in analyzing the numbers and selecting the most deserving players on a completely objective basis.

If I was going to pick sentimental favorites, then Brandon Inge would have certainly made my ballot. But in the end, both of the choices on the left side of the infield were easy.

Entering Thursday's games, Evan Longoria led all ballot-eligible third basemen in runs scored and RBI. He was tied with Inge with 12 home runs, and was second in batting average (.326) and on base percentage (.398).

Honorable mention goes to Michael Young, who has flawlessly transitioned to playing third base this season.

The even easier pick, when looking at the numbers, was at shortstop. The Rays' Jason Bartlett is far and away the best choice to serve as the starting shortstop on the American League squad.

Bartlett leads everyone else on the shortstop ballot in RBI, stolen bases, batting average, and on-base percentage. He is tied for the lead with seven home runs, and is second in runs scored.

There is no one even close to his dominating performance thus far.

Longoria will likely get the fan vote to start at third base, I just hope Bartlett gets similar consideration.

How Interleague Play Should Be Scheduled

While inter-league play is still a relatively recent innovation, it is a tragic oversight on the part of Major League Baseball not to do what they should do on the first weekend- celebrate the history of the league.

Prior to 1997, teams from the American and National Leagues squared off only in the World Series. Inter-league play is the perfect opportunity to revive some of those classic match-ups.

The first weekend of AL vs. NL should pit the most recent Fall Classic foes for as far back in history as match-ups can be created. After that point, you go with the best match-ups you can.

Here's what you would have seen this past weekend if Bud Selig would simply put me in charge of creating the schedule.
Begin Slideshow

SPORTS! You Just Got to Love Sports!

When I returned home from work today, I was greeted at the door by my son. He said, "ockey!" and promptly went to his wagon where he pulled out two yellow wiffle ball bats, and a mini Purdue basketball from his wagon.

He handed me a bat as I put down my bag, and we proceeded to knock the ball around on the floor like a hockey puck. He's not yet two years old.

The Chicago Blackhawks have clearly passed the fever on to everyone.

By the time I was able to turn on the game, the Hawks led 3-0. It looked as though it may be one of those nights where the stars just don't align, and you don't get an exciting sporting event.

But then the Red Wings got hot. Nick Lidstrom scored a power play goal. Then, in quick succession, Brian Rafalski scored and Jonathan Ericsson tallied the tying goal. The Detroit defensemen had gone wild.

I told my wife that I hoped the game would go quintuple overtime. When the horn sounded on the third period, I figured we were on our way.

Let me pause for a moment to explain my hockey prerogative. I am not a huge hockey fan, but my favorite team is the Red Wings. I live here in Chicago, and the energy from the Chicago resurgence is palpable. I'm not exactly sure who I was hoping for, maybe just a close game.

At some point during the game, I flipped over to the Twins/Brewers game just in time to see Michael Cuddyer wrap a triple and complete the cycle. It was definitely a nice bonus.

Back to hockey. If you like sports, and don't get excited for playoff overtime hockey, then I question whether you have a soul. It is simply some of the best that sports has to offer.

I didn't get my overtime. But, Patrick Sharp's goal into a wide open net less than two minutes in gave me something I did want...a good series.

After the celebration, I flipped over to the Magic/Cavaliers game, already in the fourth quarter and beginning to seesaw back and forth.

Hedo Turkoglu hits a clutch three-point shot on the kick out from Rashard Lewis to tie the game at 93.

Minutes later, it was Turkoglu again, driving left and pulling up at the free throw line to swish the go-ahead basketball with exactly one second to play.

Cleveland advanced the ball to half court, and it was time for the King to step to another level.

Twenty years ago it was Michael Jordan over Craig Ehlo to win a playoff game. Cleveland fans can finally erase that memory, and replace it with a much more pleasant sight.

James was able to add a signature game to his career, and perhaps shift the momentum back to the Cavaliers as the favorite to win the NBA title.

Switching over to the Direct TV MLB Game Mix channel. I found four games with plenty of story lines.

Billy Buckner was called up to pitch for the Diamondbacks at Oakland, and came through in a big way. Buckner pitched seven and a third, allowing only five hits and one run. Arizona beat the Athletics 2-1.

In San Diego, White Sox fans found themselves rooting for the hated Cubs as they batted against the man who would not be a south sider, Jake Peavy.

Unfortunately for Sox fans, Peavy was the stud everyone thinks he is, and he shut down the anemic Cubs offense, allowing only two hits over six innings while striking out 10. Chicago loaded the bases in the ninth, but a Derrek Lee pop out allowed the Padres to beat the Cubs 4-0.

Finally, the battle of Los Angeles gave us yet another pitcher's duel. Each team had plenty of opportunities to score.

The Angels had 12 base runners through seven innings, but only managed one run. The Dodgers had 14 base runners through seven innings and also had plated only one run.

The Angels finally broke through in the eighth, scoring twice on a Chone Figgins bases loaded single. The Dodgers went quietly in the eighth and were unable to muster anything off Angels closer Brian Fuentes, and the game ended 3-1.

Meanwhile, in Seattle, Randy Johnson pitched in Seattle for perhaps the final time in his career.

After loading the bases in the sixth, Johnson left to a moving standing ovation by the home team fans. The Big Unit allowed one run, and struck out seven, taking a no decision in the game.

At 1:06 am CT, the Mariners ended the night when Jose Lopez hit a long drive off the left field fence for a walk-off single. It was time to get to bed, for the boy would be awake soon, with wiffle ball bat in hand.

My conclusion from the night?

I love sports. Sports are great.

There are plenty of terrible things that happen in life, from stubbing a toe to the death of a loved one, to countless tragedies that occur around the world. Sometimes we just have to appreciate the little things.

Overtime hockey. Buzzer beaters. Baseball games that could last forever. You just got to love those sports!
