New England Patriots Hit Bye Bye Bye Week with Tough Stretch Looming Ahead

It's bye week 2009 for the New England Patriots, and this season is gearing up to be one of of the most epic seasons to be a fan of the New England Patriots.

This is a season that saw the return of Tom Brady, an emotional milestone that one probably would not even begin to comprehend unless you are a true diehard fan of my beloved Pats.

It is a season that saw the end of Scott Pioli holding back Bill Belichick in his true genius. Not only is this team performing in such a high capacity, they drafted 12 rookies, most of whom are getting decent play time.

Myron Pryor is one who sticks out in my mind as a serious find. The kid just has a motor that doesn't quit and has been providing quality push when rushing the passer.

Darius Butler is another rookie who is shaping up to follow the footsteps of some of the better cornerbacks to play, ever.

Other rookies this year that I feel will end up being marquee names for years to come, are Brian Hoyer, Julian Edelman, Brandon Tate, Pat Chung, and Sebastian Vollmer. There are also some key free agent finds like safety Brandon McGowan and corner Leigh Bodden, not to mention the continued growth of previous draft choices and defensive leaders Jerod Mayo and Brandon Meriweather.

It is a season that saw the trade of a figurehead of the team, Richard Seymour, to the Oakland Raiders for a 2011 first-round draft pick. This pick is shaping up to be a very high pick as well, one that will certainly bring a future keystone to this Patriots franchise.

It is also a season that saw the retiring of Tedy Bruschi, which, while depressing, was necessary. His presence on ESPN is comforting, though, as well as his also being a voice of reason in that twisted anti-Boston medium.

The bye week comes almost midseason. At 5-2 the Patriots sit atop the AFC East and will stay that way no matter the outcome of this week's divisional matchup between the Jets and Dolphins.

The two losses the Patriots suffered were games they should have won, and as devastating as they may have felt at the time, it is promising to see the team close to the top after struggling to perform at their finest.

This season has seen an awe-inspiring comeback to open the season, lowest of lows in the doubters of Brady against the Jets, highs of beating up on weak teams like strong teams do, and a painful last minute loss—a last minute loss against a team that we may face, in the same place, in the AFC Championship game for a chance at revenge.

The Pats will take this week to heal up, having had a few painful injuries, as well as some small "bumps and bruises" every game.

Matt Light was injured, and rookie Sebastian "Seabass" Vollmer has played very well in replacement. Seabass did get mildly hurt himself, however, and may have compensated for this by committing a few holding penalties against the Bucs.

Downhill runner Sammy Morris and solid veteran pickup running back Fred Taylor were also hurt, leaving most of the running duties to Laurence Maroney. Despite all the criticism of Maroney, he has played well enough, just continuing to show flashes of the running back we hoped he would be.

One thing looking forward is the Patriots cannot look back. They need to forget about their two losses and only build upon their recent successes. The biggest point is that the next five games are going to define their 2009 season.

Week Nine they face the Miami Dolphins at home, then they travel to Indianapolis to take on the Colts in a Sunday night game, then it's back home against the Jets, then off to New Orleans to square off with the high-flying Saints on Monday night, and then back south again against the Dolphins in Miami after a short week.

The Patriots are going to wave bye to the bye week and plunge head first into the meat of their schedule, and only be better for it.

We'll see where they stand after the second game versus Miami, but they currently rest in a position to take charge of their destiny and mark the year of the return of Tom Brady as one of the most memorable, meaningful, inspiring, hopeful seasons ever.

Let's hear it for FOUR in FOURTY-FOUR!

Fear Not Patriots' Fans, Brady To Moss Is Okay

So basically everyone now is hearing about how Tom Brady was "hurt" last night by Albert Haynesworth "hit."

Let me first say that there is absolutely no need for defensive players to be following through like that on quarterbacks. It may seem that I am biased in this opinion, considering I am a Patriots fan, and obviously am sensitive about Brady's health.

Earlier in the game, Vince Wilfork made a similar hit on Jason Campbell, and my first reaction was to say, "what are you doing, Vince!"

Tom Brady is going to decimate all this year, as evidence by his clicking with Wide Receiver Randy Moss last night, when he was 12 of 19, throwing 150 yards and 2 TDs in two quarters. Both touchdowns were to Moss on two picture perfect plays.

With that said, we may not see Tom Brady next week, but know that this isn't going to keep him from embarrassing the Bills on Monday Night Football in a couple weeks. Here is why:

He reached out with his right arm to be picked up.

He swirled his arm around on the sideline afterward.

He was throwing the ball around as well. Showing no pain or grimace on his face.

The Patriots actually said something about it: "sore shoulder." This is a good, considering they would have had no comment had it been serious.

Chad Johnson Tweeted how he got a message back from Brady saying he was fine (they're friends).

Bill Belichick said today, "Tom had a desire to play, but we made a football decision to play other players because I think we need to see them at that position, and make an evaluation there. That’s what I’m saying.”

Tom is scheduled to make a radio appearance on WEEI on Monday, and in my opinion, had it been really serious this would not be happening.

Brady has been listed as "Probable-Shoulder" ever since he hurt that same shoulder back in 2002, and look what he had done since then.

Former Patriot quarterback Drew Bledsoe had a similar injury which only kept him out for two weeks.

Perhaps worrying about his shoulder, will help keep his mind of his knee and actually help him overall.

Fear not Patriots fans, this is only a troubled time for every Patriots opponent this year, considering Brady to Moss is in high gear yet again.

So the Patriots waived Kevin O'Connell, which could be taken a number of ways.

If you have a moment, you should check out the gem of a string of comments by my now good friend Lewis "I read" Oliver.

The Day Of The Patriots | The Day Of DirecTV

Living outside the local network area can be a depressing experience for the true fan of any NFL team. Luckily, DirecTV offers NFL Sunday Ticket!

Now, things seem simple. Just get DirecTV, and the Patriots will be beamed right into your living room every week. As an added bonus, you'll get to watch every other game in which you have remote interest.

Unless, of course, your apartment complex does not allow satellites on the roof, and the only place they do allow them is on the north side of a two story building (dish must face south).

What does that mean?

No DirecTV, meaning no NFL Sunday Ticket for this Patriots fan living in San Diego.

But alas, this Patriots fan has MOVED! And guess who is coming tomorrow? That's right, the DirecTV installation guy to hook up a glorious NFL Sunday Ticket feeding satellite dish to my 50-inch HDTV.

Now, I'm going to experience the returning year of TB12 in luxury.

I had been driving 45 miles out of the way to go to a bar full of Patriots fans to watch the games. That was becoming a stress point in my marriage, so this works out perfectly.

Still I have to keep a crappy cable company for internet. But thank my lucky stars this place faces the absolute perfect direction for a perfect angle on the satellite.

Let's talk about the return of Tommy and his Pats for a minute.

Week one of the preseason was a great showing, and he looked good in my opinion. I did seem to see a little throwing of the back foot, as well as a few passes he didn't step in to. Other than that, he looked very much in control of the offense.

In week two, the offensive line played like a bunch of school girls and blew a blocking scheme audible. Tommy got rocked, but bounced right back up as if nothing happened. This equals good.

So they lost 7-6. This does not surprise me considering it is a preseason game, and I don't care at all. All I wanted to see was Tommy take a hit and be alright, as well as the defense look good (which they did).

A few of the draft picks are turning out to be great surprises. Of course, Julian Edelman, but then I was expecting great things out of this sleeper. He is pretty much a lock for the 53 in my opinion.

Myron Pryor has a motor that doesn't quit, and I have enjoyed watching him. Ron Brace as well, and then it looks like the D-line is very strong and deep this year.

The Patriots have been showing a lot of 4-3 alignments, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything considering that is a trend every year in the preseason.

Darius Butler looks like he has the making of a great cover corner in the NFL. In week one he gave up a big pass interference penalty, which ultimately led to a touchdown. The Eagles decided to go for two, then Darius picks it off! What does he do? Marches right off the field still ticked about the penalty. That is the sign of a true professional in my mind.

Sebastion Vollmer has shown good signs, although this past week he looked like a lost mule on a few snaps.

Kevin O'Connell needs to get it together. He looks like a lost school boy looking for mommy in the crowd out there.

I could go on forever.

And I will, later.

Happy Tom Brady Day?

Today.

Today Tom Brady will take the field in a game against an opponent. Yes, it is a preseason game.

Today is a day I have been waiting for for months.

Today is a day I have been thinking about since that other day that is forbidden to speak of.

Today is the day the world will be able to see Tom Brady move, slide, throw, and just play the game of football in an actual game environment.

Today, I am on duty and can't watch the game.

Today.

Pats Fans Beware: Steeler Troll Hole

They threw me in a hole,

Threw down a rabid Steeler troll.

It plucked away my eyes,

I thought no one heard my cries,

I started screaming "WHY?"

Then not so much to my surprise,

some a-hole screamed out: "Cheater, DIE!"

This is a weak joke of a poem, but if you fancy yourself some kind of "poet," just shut up.

New England Patriots: Derrick Burgess Just Became My Binky

The other 31 teams in the NFL were just officially served their notification to duck and cover this year.

The New England Patriots acquired a proven pass rusher.

All year, my only desire was to see the ball stuffed down the throats of the other teams, and their quarterbacks flattened on the freaking ground.

My desire to watch this man explode with quick tenacity, and decimate teams' offensive confidence is matched by NOTHING.

The final piece just fell into place. Vegas better cut down those Super Bowl odds a little more, or some people going to get RICH.

Count on it this year, the Patriots will be like a broken ATM spitting out money for anyone betting on them to make the spread.

19-0. Super Bowl XLIV victors.

Done.

Angels Fan for a Day | The Tale of the Sweep

Much can be said about my extreme love for Boston sports. The most recent being the absolute pleasure I received July 12 from watching A-Fraud walk away from the plate after some real clutch hitting.

My brother Jim was in town, and we had decided to take a trip up to Anaheim to watch the Angels hand one to Yankees at Angel Stadium.

If you think you know what being hot is, you haven't sat in the summer sun of Southern California for nine innings (atrocious). I wouldn't wish it upon anyone, especially when your seats provide no cover, and you are such a fan of the sport you can't leave your seat for even a little shade (fearing you'll miss out on some serious action).

Action in baseball? Most definitely, especially in this nail biter.

Being a Red Sox fan, I root for any team who plays against the Evil Empire, and the Angels had won two prior games in this series. That meant that coming in if I wanted to see what I came for, the Angels had to finish the sweep.

Throughout the game I dealt with nasty Yankees fans squirming in their seats looking at my Red Sox shirt and hat. The Angels fans, even though we are dreadful playoff opponents, were very accepting of the attire. They understood I had called a truce for the day.

The Angels got an early 4-1 lead and held off the onslaught of the Yankees lineup for the rest of the game, ensuring the sweep. It was topped off by Alex Fraudriguez striking out to end the game.

It is such a great thing to be a fan of a game to the point you don't care who's playing, but it is far better to watch your enemies perish from the hands of your temporary allies.

The Sox worked over the Royals that day as well, increasing their lead over the Yanks by another game.

They are on track for a 100 wins this year! Let's keep up the support!

POLL: Which Active Patriots Jersey Do You Own?

Patriot Pat says...

So I have a problem. I have an obsessive issue that requires attention. I can only allow myself to own one jersey of one active player on the Patriots.

Rodney Harrison has been my jersey for the past six years, and now I am going to have to look into a new one.

What am I to do? How does one really choose?

Choosing Rodney for me was simple. He was a freaking maniac, and I was psyched to have him on the team; especially after going to a Chargers game in San Diego with a friend one year and watching him plow through players like I used to plow snow afta a Nor'Easta!

So what jersey do you primarily wear on game day?

I need some expert advice.

UPDATED Video: Tom Brady Seen Throwing Passes at Gillette Stadium | He is BACK

Yesterday was a glorious day—thanks in part to Tom Brady being seen throwing passes at Gillette Stadium.

I caught this on Sportscenter, which also shows him making a five-step drop. I rewound it on the DVR enough times to get my wife to yell at me.

This video is compliments of our good friends at The Boston Globe.

I updated the video to one I got from espn.com, and it shows more on the footage I was talking about. It also talks about Brady's first day of participation in the OTA.

Whatever It Takes, the New England Patriots Need Some Pepper This Year

Patriot Pat says...

I believe the Patriots need to trade for Julius Peppers, but what would it take, and how would it happen?

There are a few things that we know:

According to Miguel the Patriots have $4.7 Million in cap space.

The outside linebacker position is the weak point of the Patriots' defense.

The Patriots are overstocked with potential nose tackles.

Trading Vince Wilfork will free up another $1.7 Million in cap space.

2009 is the final season on Wilforks' contract.

There are questions that need answering when considering if a deal for Julius Peppers is even feasible:

Would Julius Peppers be willing to be paid a high end outside linebacker salary in the range of $6-8 Million, versus an extraordinary defensive end salary?

Are the Carolina Panthers interested in another defensive tackle for their 4-3 defense? They have a lot, but all but four are rookies or one year players.

Would the Patriots be willing to give up the 2010 second round draft picks that it would most likely cost the team?

The question I am asking then is this; should the Patriots unload Vince Wilfork (or any other important member of the team for that matter) and draft picks, to bring in Julius Peppers to play outside linebacker?

My first instinct about trading Wilfork is to think "no way, Vince Wilfork is the rock of this defense."

That sentiment is very true, but it has also been the case since he started as a rookie. There is no reason why Ron Brace could not come in and be a serviceable starting nose tackle in the two-gap 3-4 system the Patriots run.

You have to weigh up the options and decide whether having Peppers improves the defense if Wilfork is not a part of it. There is no real way to answer that, though. In my opinion, if Brace can perform to any acceptable standard, then the defense will be vastly improved by the addition of Peppers.

If Brace could not perform to said standard, then the addition of Peppers will actually weaken the defense.

There is all kinds of talk about the Patriots' options with the current players on the roster:

There could be an increase of big nickel packages, utilizing the amount of depth we have at safety.

We could see an increase in the use of four linemen, with any number of lineups behind them. Again, this will utilize the depth we have.

The one question in the defense is that of the outside linebacker position, but the young players (Crable, Redd, Woods) could rise to the occasion this year.

Looking back on the draft, I am really wishing the Patriots had used one of their first day picks on one of the many linebackers for the taking. This thought feels hypocritical to my points, though.

I always say that the linebackers we have will not get better without playing time, but the question is if any of them can become the players that we need them to be. There is also no reason to say the players we could have drafted would end up being what we needed them to be either.

The only thing I do know, is that the Patriots could use some serious help at the OLB position, and that Julius Peppers is the answer.

This really makes me want him on our defense, no matter what. Whatever the cost is.

Just think about the idea of having him on this team, on this defense. There would be very few questions about the team in general, and they actually would be better on paper than the 2007 record breaking Patriots team.

I know giving up Wilfork seems like a radical idea, but that is the point. I want to shake it up on this one and see where things land. Remember, he is going to want big money next year. Would Carolina want him?

So know that I have your minds in full shock mode, I have some questions for you:

Would you want the Patriots to trade for Julius Peppers if it meant trading Vince Wilfork, or any other important member of the team for that matter?

If not Vince, what would you be willing to give up (use Miguel's page for salary cap references) to get exactly what the Patriots need to be the most dominant team in the league this year? For example, trading Richard Seymour would free up $3.3 Million if we traded him. Who would you rather depart with?

Who/what do you think Carolina will want in return?

Do you think the Patriots even need an addition at linebacker?

Before you comment, know that I am aware that Peppers has not signed the franchise tender, and can not currently be traded. Let's hear some legitimate ideas on how we could make this happen.

Andrew Cahill is a true Boston sports fan. Check out his Web site, "Patriot Pat's Patsies."

UPDATE: There is talk of the Patriots trading with Oakland for DE Derrick Burgess. What do you think about that? 2 Pro Bowl seasons, but is almost 31, and has been fighting injuries in recent years.

New England Patriots: You Were Robbed Of Super Bowl XLII

Patriot Pat says...

In light of all the recent conspiracy theories being thrown around about professional sports on B/R, I thought I should throw one more into the mix.

I do not know who the person is who did the video below, but I do remember thinking "what the hell is going on," about the exact same things he brings up about the closing moments of Super Bowl XLII.

I don't want to get into the fact that this makes my stomach turn, even though it does. I figured that it was my duty to let as many people in on this as I could.

At the time, I remember thinking "Whatever. Next play, we'll stop them next play."

The Giants are a great team, don't get me wrong. I believe they fought the game honorably, and for a long time I have been taking the honorable route in saying that they should have won that game.

Actually, the Patriots have no excuses and should have won the game by a fair margin. They didn't, however, and I would take a win by four points any day of the week.

After watching this video—I literally had to force myself—I am convinced that the Giants should have run out of time before they scored.

Before you go commenting on this article, know that I am not over that magical season ending in such a devastating way.

I am just using this as extra fuel when thinking about the Patriots decimating the 2009 playoffs.

If you comment on this article without having watched the entire video, you will be ignored, because if you watch the video, the conspiracy theorists' points are quite relative, and spot on.

This is intended for its limited entertainment value.

Just a small note, but if you can't see the video just watch it here.

The New England Patriots' Quest Is To Slay the AFC Beast

Patriot Pat says...

Critics have truculently said that the AFC East will be weaker this year, in that it will be facing off against tougher opponents. That may be true that they are facing tougher opponents, but that sentiment should as well be applied to those teams that are playing against the AFC East—a division which I believe we should affectionately term the AFC "Beast."

Gone are the days of peace during the Patriots' parade to victory, and this battle should be one that will last for many years to come. Certainly things will be more interesting in the coming years.

Although it is four months prior to the beginning of the regular season, I feel comfortable in making my presumptuous predictions. That is based on there not being any seriously unforeseen events coming until then—barring any injuries, for example—that would change my mind.

After taking a seriously in-depth look at each of the team's current situations, schedules, and opponent's situations, I have come to the conclusion that the AFC East will be the beast of the league.

New England Patriots—2008: 11-5 | 2009: 12-4

Of course—the Patriots fan predicts the Patriots. Isn't that what you are all saying right now? Well, in all seriousness, how can you not? The Patriots are coming off an offseason that is unparalleled in recent memory.

Tom Brady is returning from a serious knee injury, and has used his time off to allow other lingering injuries to heal completely. He is testing better physically know than he has in years.

They have revamped their secondary, and may even still add a veteran linebacker to an already impressive corps.

Their offense will continue to impress, and their defense has room to improve upon from last year.

I won't get into the Patriots' situation so much in this article, but be on the lookout for a comprehensive look into the Patriots' roster situation as we head into training camp during the coming months.

Losses: Baltimore, Indianapolis, New York Jets, and Miami.

New York Jets—2008: 9-7 | 2009: 11-5

The fans in New York should be proud of their team headed into the 2009 season. The team's strongest aspect last year was its defense, and they have made huge progress in making it even tougher.

They started with stealing defensive mastermind Rex Ryan away from the Baltimore Ravens. Then they continued their defensive building by trading for DB Lito Sheppard and signing free agent LB Bart Scott.

Defense wins championships, right?

They also took the draft as an opportunity to aggressively pursue the only missing piece of the puzzle in my mind—quarterback. Last year, Brett Favre was just terrible. He consistently made atrocious decisions in key situations, and was generally reckless with the ball.

I fully expect Sanchez to start ahead of Clemens. Even though he is a rookie, and performances like Flacco and Ryan's of last year are uncommon, he will have similar success this year. He is a smart player who will adapt quickly in my opinion—no matter what his former coach, or all you pessimists think.

Why would I feel so strongly about this? Well, to be frank, I am fearful of the Jets in the coming years.

Losses: New England, Miami, Buffalo, Atlanta, and Indianapolis.

Miami Dolphins—2008: 11-5 | 2009: 10-6

The creator of the Wildcat will have a new toy to play with in Pat White. The Wildcat as it is known now will have a different look in 2009, in my opinion.

Bill Parcells took over the Dolphins and in one year turned a 1-15 team into an 11-5 team. Some people will argue that was on the virtue of an easy schedule, and even though they do have a harder schedule this year, I am expecting the Dolphins to perform admirably.

The Dolphins travel north into colder weather only once the last half of the season. That trip is to Buffalo where I plan on seeing them win. The other three away games in the last half of the season are in Jacksonville, Tennessee, and Carolina.

I think they handle Tennessee this year.

Losses: Atlanta, San Diego, New York Jets, Carolina, New England, and Pittsburgh.

Buffalo Bills—2008 7-9 | 2009: 9-7

The Bills offense should stop nothing short of being termed a stampede this year. The receiving combination of a healthy Trent Edwards to Terrell Owens and Lee Evans, along with Marshawn Lynch and Dominic Rhodes on the ground, will lead to some serious yardage and points.

As history will show us however, offense will not solely get the job done.

They did draft Aaron Maybin, who will provide some pass-rushing ability for coming years, and along with former first round pick Donte Whitner heading up their defensive backfield, their passing defense should improve from their 12th in the league ranking.

They did not make many moves to improve against the run, and that will be a big weak point as it gets deeper into the season.

The downfall for the Bills this year will be their division record of 3-5.

Buffalo have to watch out for predators like the AFC Beast.

Losses: New England x2, New York Jets, Miami x2, Tennessee, and Indianapolis.

Don't get me wrong, the entire league is full of extremely strong and determined football teams, but, if you ask me, the strongest division is the AFC Beast.

Their difficult schedules will only solidify this point by the end of the year.

Darius Butler: New England Patriots Corner Aficionado

Patriot Pat says...

Darius Butler—wish I could say welcome to New England, but I would be a little late on that one wouldn't I?

Darius Butler

Fans of the team were excited to have a corner of your caliber selected, but a lot of them were shocked that the team didn't draft an outside linebacker with the pick you were drafted at. What would you have to say to the naysayers as far as supporting the Patriots drafting you?

Darius Butler

Leading up to the draft, you trained with Deion "Prime-time" Sanders. How exactly do you think his tutoring helped you prepare for the draft, and prepare for life in the National Football League in general?

Darius Butler

Do you feel overwhelmed at all about coming into a team that has such high expectations for this year?

Darius Butler

Your senior year at the University of Connecticut yielded no interceptions. This concerns some, seeing that with your skill-set, one could infer that making moves on the ball is your biggest strength. Would you say that the reason for that is the lack of passes thrown in your direction that year?

Darius Butler

Why would you say that quarterbacks tended to avoid you in college?

Darius Butler

You are aware that as a rookie in the National Football League, quarterbacks will be targeting you—not avoiding you? Does this motivate you to stay on top of your game?

Darius Butler

I'm curious how much larger the play book is in New England compared to UConn. Can you let me in on that, or is that some Top Secret information?

Darius Butler

I know you can't speak for the rest of the team, but how do you feel about playing a game in London this year? Do you think the travel will have an effect on the teams' performance?

Darius Butler

Bill Belichick came and saw you workout at your Pro Day in Connecticut. Did you feel especially nervous knowing that a head coach—who hardly goes to such events—made a point to drive down to see you? What was your encounter with him that day like compared to when you met him at rookie camp?

Darius Butler

A lot of fans are expecting you to become a solid replacement for the loss of Asante Samuel. Are you prepared to take on the challenge of filling such big shoes?

Darius Butler

If there was one thing about Asante that bothered me, it was his relative inability to make a tackle at the line of scrimmage. This is something you are going to do better than him, right?

Darius Butler

So you will be wearing former starting cornerback Ellis Hobbs III' number, No. 27. How did you feel on April 26 when the Patriots traded away Hobbs to make room?

Darius Butler

You realize that I am instantly your No. 1 fan, seeing you are a Patriot, and I am a fanatic?

Darius Butler

Well thank you for your time, Darius. Good luck out there during training camp and the preseason. We fully expect to see you picking passes and cracking heads come the regular season.

The countdown is on...

UPDATE: If anyone is wondering the point of this article, look into the CBS Sports correspondent job, and you will understand.

New England Patriots—First and Foremost

Patriot Pat says...

For myself and the Patriots, first and foremost comes the franchise. Above anything else considered when exploring your fanhood, should be the love of the team—the entity, or essence, that is the idea of the team.

They are the New England Patriots, and they are our team.

No matter what anyone says about them, they are our team, and we will love them. Of course we love individual players who make up the roster, but above all we should value the team.

It could be Tony Eason, Steve Grogan, Doug Flutie, Babe Parilli, Jim Plunket, Scott Zolak, Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady, or Matt Cassel calling the signals, and we will love our team.

Coaches, players, stadiums, logos, and owners come and go. The one thing that remains is the Patriots—the team.

It would be truly spectacular if I could sit down and write a fabulous story about the exact moment when I became a fanatical fan of the Patriots. The truth is that being a fan of the Patriots is just how it is.

It is what it is.

I have been a fan since before I can remember. I can't tell you that I remember that first game I ever watched with my father, or the first time I considered them as my team.

There was a time when I feared they would be the Hartford Patriots. I remember that very well, because that was a very dark time for us true fans.

Then Robert Kraft, an avid lifelong fan of the Patriots, came to the rescue and revamped the franchise. He took a team that lacked stability and turned it into an old reliable.

There hasn't been a team nearly as successful as the Patriots during his tenure as the owner of our franchise. They have had two losing seasons in the 14-plus years he has owned the team, and have managed 156 regular season wins, only 68 losses, five conference championships, and three Super Bowl victories.

But, I digress.

The Patriots are the solid rock in my life. Just as coaches and players come and go, they are that solid thing I can turn to when things in my own life come and go.

There will always be offseason workouts, mini-camps, signings, trades, preseasons, regular seasons, and, if we're lucky, postseason games for me to look forward to.

So, if you are wondering why the picture for this article is a picture of Matt Cassel, know that I am proud of the man, loved him while he was quarterback of my team, and wish him nothing but the best.

Of course I mourned the loss of Tom Brady last year, but remember that above all, we should love the team most—not just who makes it up.

One last thing: It doesn't really matter how you became a Patriots fan, just that you be a true one if you are.

I really just don't remember.

Andrew Cahill is a true Boston sports fan. Check out his Web site, "Patriot Pat's Patsies."

Manny Ramirez Suspension: Just Manny Being Manny, Baby

Patriot Pat says...

Manny Ramirez has been suspended by Major League Baseball for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

The suspension is for 50 games.

Sports Illustrated reports:

Major League Baseball plans to announce the suspension later today. Ramirez, a baseball source told SI.com, explained to baseball officials he was uncertain that he was taking a banned substance and may have had a medical reason for using the substance.

The source said the substance was not classified as a steroid but was clearly defined as a banned performance-enhancer according to the drug agreement between baseball and its players association.

Banned substances can only be taken with prior knowledge and medical clearance from baseball's drug program administrators. Such exceptions are known as Theraputic Use Exemptions, or TUEs. The suspension is an indication that Ramirez did not have a TUE for the substance.

I'm sorry, Manny, but there is no excuse for this one. If it is truly for medical purposes, there is a clear option for you to have pursued using these drugs.

As stated above, you could have asked for a Theraputic Use Exemption, but you did not—or maybe you did, and they denied it, which would be worse.

You are a grown man, with resources beyond any comprehension to us common folk, and you couldn't determine what you were doing was wrong in the eyes of the league?

From a true Red Sox fan, good riddance.

Jason Bay is a breath of fresh air, and even though you provided us with some great firepower, you did so while creating great disdain in the fan base.

You deserve everything you get, and I hope you limp your way out of Los Angeles.

UPDATE: Manny Ramirez, as a Marine, I can tell you that when you are frequently drug tested, you must be extremely wary of everything you put in your body. Even if a doctor gives it to you.

Although, that is a convenient story.

UPDATE: This is what happens when Manny Ramirez is irresponsible. Just wonderful.

A Memo to the Patriots' Super Bowl Ring Seller: Buddy, Are You Serious?

Patriot Pat says...

Today I learned that you are planning to Patriots-Player-Super-Bowl-Ring_W0QQitemZ200335626632QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_SM_Fan_Shop?hash=item2ea4ef1188&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1240%7C66%3A3%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A100&loc=interstitialskip" target="_blank" title="ring">sell your Super Bowl XXXVI Championship ring.

Even though a few of these rings have been sold before, let it be known that I find this appalling and unacceptable.

The fact that the auction on eBay ended without a single bid, even with your asking price of a mere $50,000, is a sign that I am not alone with this sentiment.

I just want you to know this: As a true Patriots fan, whenever I find out who you are, I will excommunicate you from the Patriots lore within my own mind—no matter who you are.

Do you, Mr. Player or Staff, really not realize just how big of a stab at the New England Patriots' franchise stunts like this are?

You more than likely do, since you have made it a point to hide your identity from the public.

I just feel that the fact that you are willing to sell a gift that was bestowed upon you by an organization, one which helped you become a champion, shows a serious lack of integrity.

That is all.

Andrew Cahill is a true Boston sports fan. Check out his website, "Patriot Pat's Patsies."

UPDATE: It is Je'Rod Cherry, and he is selling it for charity. If you read my comments, you will understand I still have negative feeling about this.

Tom Brady: To Pre, or Not To Pre

Patriot Pat says...

Last year, we did not see Tom F-ing Brady in the preseason. He happened to be nursing a bum ankle, and the consensus was that the prized and seasoned quarterback didn't exactly need the experience of the limited snaps preseason provides.

I'm imagining the experience, and looking forward to the day of Sept. 14, when Tom F-ing Brady runs out onto the field at Gillette Stadium.

The place is going to erupt, and will do so on Monday Night Football. The world is going to see just how much we love our star quarterback.

The question that comes in mind when thinking about all of this is whether or not we will see Tom F-ing Brady in the preseason, and if we truly want him to get some game experience before the regular season or not.

Last year, when Tom F-ing Brady didn't play in the preseason, he was coming off a career year. He didn't have a serious injury that kept him out for an entire season.

The benefit of him playing and shaking out the cobwebs in games that do not ultimately count would certainly be reason for us to want him to play. On the other hand, the extra time for him to ensure his knee is at its full recovered potential would certainly be a reason for us to not want him to play.

Does Tom F-ing Brady really need to shake out the cobwebs?

I mean, he is Tom F-ing Brady. Recent remarks coming out of workouts with him are that he looks strong and will be fine to start the season.

Do we want the first few weeks to be when Tom F-ing Brady shakes out the cobwebs if he really needs to?

In my opinion, I might want Tom F-ing Brady to play in the preseason if he is able. At least to get that little extra time adjusting to the speed of the game, even if his mind is already in the right place.

Do I think that Tom F-ing Brady really needs to shake out the cobwebs?

Being that Tom F-ing Brady has seen his share of playing time since he took over for Drew Bledsoe, he will more than likely be mentally ready to take over in the helm in Week One. That being said, I don't want to risk not putting together a strong showing in the begining of the year. Especially since the schedule they have this year is so difficult.

Do we care about the first few weeks of the season when considering the long-term effects of needlessly losing Tom F-ing Brady in the preseason?

If the Patriots play Tom F-ing Brady in the preseason, and he re-injures his knee, I will be out for blood.

If the Patriots play Tom F-ing Brady in the preseason, he doesn't get hurt, and then shows up at Week One looking like we all hope he will, then I will be as happy as, well, the kitten purring in my lap right now.

A Story From a True Patriots Fan

Patriot Pat says...

If you haven't noticed, I end all of my articles with: Andrew Cahill is a true Boston sports fan.

Let me set the scene.

It was late March, 2003, late at night, and I couldn't sleep because my heart was racing from the noise of helicopters that I had been hearing for hours.

I could hear them flying back and forth over us—they were Blackhawks running medevacs, since Task Force Tarawa was getting their ass handed to them just north in Nasiriyah, Iraq.

We knew it was a matter of time until we were sent up to help, and everyone was pretty restless.

It had been four days since we had crossed the border from Kuwait, and had hardly had any contact with anyone, let alone anyone we could assume an enemy.

We got the order to move up, but had it become morning by this point. The Marines of Alpha Company, First Reconnaissance Battalion, took the lead as we moved forward into the ongoing battle.

If the First Reconnaissance Battalion sounds familiar, you may have heard of us if you watched Generation Kill on HBO or read the book.

We passed burned-out Humvees, and Marines desperately digging themselves into fighting positions.

The sky is completely clear, and it is comfortably warm even though we are all wearing our chemical protective suits.

I'm standing behind my teams' .50 caliber machine gun while we start to see the city through the palm trees.

As we arrive at the outskirts of the city, it starts.

We line up along the bank of the Euphrates river and begin scanning for targets.

We find them.

We officially begin engaging in combat.

Snipers prosecute targets across the river as I provide suppressive fire for the light armored vehicles of the First Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion—they were attempting to cross the main bridge over the river.

An F/A-18 screams by really low above us, and rocket propelled grenades sail at Cobra attack helicopters flying above the war-ravaged city.

Then First Sergeant Bell casually walks up behind me.

"You guys need more ammo?" he yells at us.

I look over at one of my Marines, Lance Corporal Terrian, and tell him to shift right along the wall he was covering behind, as bullets start to rain in from behind us and hit where he had been kneeling.

It was friendly fire from the grunt battalion who had dug themselves in behind us—bastards. We shoot up red signal flares, so they know to stop shooting at us.

Mortars start to come in on our positions, so we start to shoot at potential forward observers, and I'm thinking to myself: "Man, I really hope the Patriots can get Ty Warren at pick 14."

The Patriots' Secret Weapon for 2009

Patriot Pat says...

Finding inspiration from fellow Bleacher Creature Steve Frith, we have come upon the Patriots' 2009 secret weapon.

Steve commented that he would like to see the Patriots line up in a spread offense. Starting with a flea flicker, with Tom Brady passing to Julian Edelman lined up at wide receiver, Edelman would fake a run, then bomb it to Randy Moss for a touchdown.

The next possession they can do the same thing, but Brady goes to Wes Welker instead! He said he would wet himself from laughing so hard.

On a serious note, line Welker up on one side, and Edelman on the other.

Use either one of them for a quick out to gain five yards for an easy touchdown, or line them both up as slot receivers. Have Moss and Joey Galloway in the wideout positions and watch the defense go crazy trying to cover the middle.

Screw it, line them all up on one side and watch the defense burn a time out so they can figure out how to defend against the onslaught of wideouts.

How about a Welker-to-Edelman reverse, or a Welker-to-Edelman fake reverse, following with a Brady bomb to Moss, or Galloway...whoever didn't get double coverage.

Wildcat...please, say hello to the Wildevilpanther.

Patriots Fans Turn to Mike Reiss, Not John Tomase

Patriot Pat says...

We New England Patriot fans are more than just fans, we are fanatics, and we need the best, most up to date information that we can find.

We scour the Internet day-in and day-out, looking for the most recent news concerning our beloved Patriots.

Just know this, Patriots fans: there is only one place to which you need to turn (besides myself of course), and that is Reiss's Pieces. The site is Mike Reiss's blog, who works for The Boston Globe, and is posted on Boston.com.

If anyone from Boston doesn't know who he is, then you are missing out. Also, you must not really care all that much about the Patriots.

He has the inside scoop, because he is in with the team, and, to add to that, he is truly knowledgeable with football. Leading up to the draft, he released some of the most interesting, and impressive analyses about the Patriots needs and potential targets.

Mike understands the different aspects of the game, from the actual play to the small details of the current bargaining agreement. If he doesn't know the answer, then he knows where to find it—and does.

Mike Reiss makes the most accurate, calculated thoughts about our Patriots, and is also the most humble person whom you may ever meet.

On numerous occasions, I have emailed Mike at his work with a question about the Patriots, and each time he has taken the time to respond with a well thought out response.

He also entertains fans, by posting a weekly mailbag, wherein he takes questions from fans, and tries to answer them to the best of his ability.

Mike Reiss in the man, and, as a writer, I aspire to be like him.

Then there is the anti-Mike, John Tomase. This man should not be allowed in New England, let alone to work as a Patriots beat writer for the Boston Herald.

If you don't know, John Tomase released the story that the Patriots had used a tape of the Rams Super Bowl XXXI walk-through to help win that game, and he did so days prior to Super Bowl XXXXII.

I don't know about you Boston fans, but I don't think having that weighing down on the Patriots helped their cause that Sunday.

The Herald had to recant the story, because it came out that it was based on the rumor of a rumor.

"First and foremost, this is about a writer breaking one of the cardinal rules of journalism. I failed to keep challenging what I had been told...I had repeatedly heard that this walk-through had been taped, and from people I trusted. Eventually I accepted it as fact and stopped questioning the assertion," Tomase said when trying to explain his blasphemy.

So, Boston fans, if you need information about the Patriots, then you know where to turn.

If you do decide to take a look in on Tomase's blog, then you had better be doing it to help run the guy out of town.

Andrew Cahill is a true Boston sports fan. Check out his website, Patriot Pat's Patsies.

Are you on Facebook? Become my fan if you are! If not, then sign up and become one!

UPDATE: One more plus for Mike Reiss. I emailed him with the link to this article, and he actually defended John Tomase. What a show of strong character.

"Hi Andrew,

Thank you for the kind words. I wish they didn't come at John's expense. He made a costly mistake, but I can tell you he is a good person.

--Mike"

The Patriots' 2009 secret weapon.

Julian Edelman May Be a Patriots' Sleeper, but Not Why You Think

Patriot Pat says...

Everyone is now talking about the Patriots 232nd overall pick, Julian Edelman, and asking, "Are we going to use this kid in a Wildcat-type formation?"

The Patriots very well may use him in that type of role, but there is something bigger to consider.

There is not a doubt in my mind that he will make a giant impact on this year's team, but not largely for the reason we've initially been thinking.

The Patriots, in their genius, now have a player who would excel in such a formation, that they can practice against—week-in and week-out.

So, when you are digesting the draft, and thinking about the future of the defense, know this: the Patriots' woes against the Wildcat are behind them in my mind.

Bring on Pat White twice a year, because we'll be ready.

Patriots' 2009 Second-Day Draft Recap: Ellis Hobbles Out of New England

Patriot Pat says...

Yesterday, the Patriots took a very conservative approach to the draft, and it set them up well for day two.

They chose four quality players on the first day, and managed through two first-round trades to effectively move our 124th and 199th picks up to the 73rd and 83rd picks. This gave them four third round picks to start day two.

The most distinctive move of the day was the trade of veteran starter Ellis Hobbs III to Philadelphia in exchange for two fifth round picks.

With that said, here is a recap of the Patriots' second day, and my attempt at grading each pick.

73: Traded

Traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars who drafted Derek Cox, a corner back from William & Mary. The Patriots received the Jaguars 2010 2nd-round pick, and this year's seventh-rounder (232nd overall).

Trading into next year is certainly not a new concept for the Patriots, and this move will continue to help the franchise.

Grade = A-

83: Brandon Tate, WR, North Carolina - 6'0" 183 lbs

Just another example of why we will never truly understand what is happening under the "Grey Hoodie."

Described by Mike Mayock during the draft as "a first-round talent with problems," Tate tested positive for marijuana at the combine, but where better than New England to help humble a basket case?

He is also "the best return specialist in the draft" according to the NFL network, but on the down side, he is coming off an ACL tear in 2008.

I believe that this is an excellent draft choice for future years, but not this coming one. Do not use Chad Jackson as a comparison when thinking about this choice.

Grade = B+

89: Traded

Traded to the Tennessee Titans. The Titans selected tight end Jared Cook from South Carolina. The Patriots received the Titans' 2010 second-round draft choice.

This is now the second extra 2010 second-round pick the Patriots have acquired today.

Grade = B+

97: Tyrone McKenzie, OLB, South Florida - 6'2" 242 lbs

Can't trade this one!

Finally, a linebacker! One thing we know for sure about McKenzie is his deep seeded family ties (loyalty). He transferred schools twice in attempts to be closer to his mother.

I expect McKenzie will fit in well with New England; obviously, they did pick him.

He is okay in coverage, will hustle to wrap up plays, and has potential to create turnovers. He is most likely more of a two-down player, though, who will come out in nickel situations, according to nfldraftscout.com.

Grade = B+

123: Rich Ohrnboberger, G, Penn State - 6'2" 291 lbs

There is always room for improvement and depth on the offensive line. Rich provides strength and youth, and may push someone out of a job. His biggest impact comes from his ability to excel in a zone-blocking system, which is something the Patriots have liked to run in the past and will in the future.

Grade = B-

137: Traded

Traded with the 141st pick to acquire the 123rd pick and the 198th pick from Baltimore.

(Acquired from Philadelphia in trade for Ellis Hobbs III.)

141: Traded

Traded with the 137th pick to acquire the 123rd pick and the 198th pick from Baltimore.

(Acquired from Philadelphia in trade for Ellis Hobbs III.)

170: George Bussey, T, Louisville - 6'2" 306 lbs

Another offensive lineman to add depth to the line and challenge for future spots on the roster. He is a low-ranked tackle in the draft. He could play either guard or tackle, but needs work at both positions before he could make a real impact.

Grade = D+

198: Jake Ingram, LS, Hawaii - 6'3" 232 lbs

Since Lonnie Paxton left, the Patriots signed Dan Haley away from Arizona to perform the long snapping duties. I like the pick of an extra long snapper, and potential future long snapper for the Patriots.

He is a natural leader, and accurate with his snaps, but could stand to get stronger.

Grade = B-

207: Myron Pryor, DT, Kentucky - 6'0" 319 lbs

Another defensive tackle makes me truly wonder the plans for Vince Wilfork in the future. Specifically next year, when his contract is up.

Myron was a four year starter in Kentucky, but he is short, and may be only just decent at stopping the run and pushing the pocket. He would more than likely not play a starting role if Wilfork were to depart after next year.

Grade = C-

232: Julian Edelman, QB, Kent State - 5'10" 195 lbs

Wow. I have to say that I am truly excited about this kid. He may be a giant sleeper who could make an immediate impact on this team.

Everyone is talking about Pat White, and what he brings to the table, but we really need to look into this kid in a Wildcat type formation. He is fast, runs a 4.5 40-yard dash, and could even play in a slot type receiver roll like Welker.

Grade = A-

234: Darryl Richard, DT, Georgia Tech - 6'4" 290 lbs

Okay, three defensive tackles in one draft before Vince Wilfork's contract year. I really don't think that they plan on keeping him around.

Darryl had a monster junior year, but his senior year might be why he fell so far in the draft. He as well as the other defensive tackles will surely be fighting for a spot behind Wilfork this year.

Grade = C-

I am definitely thrilled that the Patriots managed to secure two more second-round picks in the 2010 draft.

Overall, I am satisfied by the Patriots approach, seeing we are currently tight on the cap, and our roster is full of serviceable players.

It still is interesting that with all the trading and talk of bundling picks, we still managed to draft twelve players.

Andrew Cahill is a true Boston sports fan.
New England Patriots' 2009 First Day Draft Recap

Patriot Pat says...

This should be a humor article.

If anyone happened to read this before the draft was over, I didn't have a clue how it became published.

Bill Belichick did exactly what I should have expected of him. He and former protege Eric Mangini both traded out of their first-round picks and managed to do so more than once.

All of the speculation of the Patriots trading up in the draft has been blown out of the water, seeing that they have taken the exact opposite approach.

Here is a recap of the Patriots first day, and my attempt at grading the choice.

23: Traded

Traded to Baltimore for the 26th and 162nd picks. The Ravens selected Michael Oher, an offensive tackle from Ole Miss.

Grade = B+

26: Traded

Traded along with the 162nd acquired from Baltimore to Green Bay, for the Packers second-round pick (41st overall), the 73rd pick, and the 83rd pick. The Packers took Clay Matthews, LB from USC.

Grade = B+

34: Patrick Chung, S, Oregon - 5'11" 212 lbs

Who am I to say anything, since I have voiced my positive impression of Chung, but after all the hype, I am disappointed with this draft choice.

It's obvious the Patriots are taking a very conservative approach. I'm sure in my own mind now (even though Chung did pay a pre-draft visit to Foxboro) that they must have been expecting to select Louis Delmas with this pick. However, he was selected by the Lions one pick prior with the 33rd pick.

They are following with the ideal that they need to continue to get younger on defense, but with Louis Delmas gone at this pick, I think they should have gone with the best linebacker on the board or offensive lineman.

Chung is 5'11" and a hard-hitting safety like Rodney Harrison. He will most likely have a similar role to that of what Tank Williams should fill and Harrison has filled in the past. He is scouted to have some trouble challenging tight ends, though. He is not the fastest player on the field, but he does have decent speed.

Grade = B

40: Ron Brace, DT, Boston College - 6'3" 330 lbs

Seems like the Patriots might not be planning on paying Vince Wilfork a ton of money next year. This pick surprised me, as I suppose they all should. I have still failed to learn that to this point.

He is a seriously strong run-stuffer and will fit in well behind Wilfork.

This pick make me wonder about what Wright's role with the team will be. With Wright and Warren signed through the next few years, does that mean that the Patriots are not planning on keeping Seymour around?

Grade = B

(Acquired from Oakland for the 47th pick, 124th pick, and 199th pick of the draft.)

41: Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut - 5'10" 183 lbs

This pick is actually not a surprise. Belichick didn't make it a secret that he coveted this Huskie from the Big East.

The biggest thing about Butler to me is his instinctive leadership. He was a two-year captain at Connecticut; expect him to become a locker room presence in the near future.

He is a physically capable corner and will compete for a spot with the current corners on the roster.

Grade = A-

(Acquired from Green Bay.)

46:

Not ours, but a sad note for me: Connor Barwin, my favorite player for the Patriots, was selected by the Texans.

47: Traded

Traded along with the 124th pick, and 199th pick for the the 40th pick from Oakland.

Grade = B

58: Sebastian Vollmer, T, Houston - 6'7" 312 lbs

Sebastian Vollmer is huge.

I was expecting the Patriots to pick offensive line, so that doesn't surprise me, but was anyone thinking Sebastian? I do not think he will make an immediate impact this year, but down the line could prove to be serviceable.

Grade = C+

Although perhaps premature, it seems to me that the Patriots are set with who they have on the top at the outside linebacker position. I have thought this before, and don't think any potential picks tomorrow will really challenge Banta-Cain, Thomas, Crable, Woods, Redd, or Craig for a spot on the roster.

Take a minute to look at the trades.

You will see that trade of the 23rd pick, and subsequent trade of the 26th pick, effectively moved our 124th and 199th up to the 73rd and 83rd picks. It also moved our 47th pick to the 41st.

We are set up well for tomorrow, and barring any unlikely trades, we are done for the day.

I am not even going to attempt at who they may draft.

I expect some of these second-day picks to be traded into next year.

Targeting the Top 10: Who Are the Patriots Eyeing in a Possible Draft-Day Trade?

Patriot Pat says-

On the eve of the 2009 draft, Peter King is reporting the New England Patriots are looking to trade into the top 10 picks.

While the idea of trading is not new to me, and since there was suggestion of a "surprise" player, I had an interesting idea about who the Patriots might want with that top 10 pick.

What if they are targeting Michael Crabtree?

The general consensus has been that the Patriots will be looking to shore up their defense. However, as I have shown before, they have a number of defensive players who would be quite serviceable.

With Joey Galloway on a one-year contract, and Randy Moss in the later years of his career, the Patriots could certainly be targeting an offensive weapon.

With the new rules favoring offense, the need for strong defense is great. However, the need for an even stronger offense is greater.

With a player like Michael Crabtree lining up in a spread offense with Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Joey Galloway, and Greg Lewis, Tom Brady would have no problem tearing apart opposing defenses.

They also have a running back corps full of crafty veterans who will supplement each other well, enabling them to stay healthy and fresh deep into the season.

On the other side, another option is defensive end Tyson Jackson. He would be Richard Seymour's future replacement, considering Seymour is entering the final year of his current contract.

Coupled with that, however unlikely, is the potential of a trade of Richard Seymour and picks to Carolina in exchange for Julius Peppers.

Trading Seymour would free up another $3.3 million in cap space to make the signing of Peppers more possible.

Of course, if they are not able to pull the trade off, then this would be a moot point, but one thing is for sure, the next two days are going to interesting.

Be sure to comment with your ideas.

This is officially a moot point. UPDATED post-1st round.

A True Sports Fan Pledge

Patriot Pat says-

We as fans must pledge our undying faith to our teams.

Images like this one above should happen nowhere.

We must remain absolutely faithful to the bitter end.

As a Boston sports fan, my examples will be of such a nature.

To make judgments on the outcome of the Celtics' season at this point, even in the eye of damning evidence of Kevin Garnett being injured, is Boston sports blasphemy.

Should we be "hopeful" of the Sox?

No, we should Believe.

Is a 7-6 start "pedestrian?"

In case you haven't noticed, every year in Baseball is effectively "pedestrian" for every team. It is only the teams that sustain their play for the entire season, or come together at the end, that win out.

The Red Sox have a strong pitching staff, which will come together, and pay huge dividends at the end of the season.

Pitching, by the way, was their downfall last year.

What is it that truly defines greatness?

Championships?

Boston has had its share recently, but I remember years when even winning games at all was considered a blessing.

The Patriots lost the Super Bowl in 2007, and Tom Brady was injured in 2008. That still does not take away from the fact that I am more proud of both of those teams than any of the three Super Bowl-winning teams.

Matt Cassel Believed. Bill Belichick Believed.

Pessimism has little place in the heart of a "true" Boston sports fan.

Maybe in a "pedestrian" Boston sports fan it does, though. That is what disappoints me.

So, If you are a true Boston sports fan...No, wait. If you are a true hometown sports fan, read along out loud and take this hometown pledge.

"I will diligently follow my teams, in all aspects.

Even in the face of extreme adversity, I will support them in hopes to overcome.

I will ensure never to bad-mouth, only to suggest improvements for my teams.

I will never quit, surrender, or give up on my teams.

Remember that on any given Sunday, during all nine innings, or until the buzzer sounds, there is always a chance.

Anything can, and has happened. Maybe with my helpful support, it will happen again."

Welcome to the alliance.

Boston Sports: State of the Union

Patriot Pat says-

Recently I was contacted by Kevin McGran, a sports reporter for the Toronto Star. He wanted to talk to me about my Bleacher Report article "Confessions of a Boston Sports Fan."

Kevin asked me about what it was like to be a Boston sports fan among all the success of all the city's teams. All I could say to that was, "I'll enjoy it while I can."

That interview was used in a Toronto Star article, published on April 18, 2009, titled "It's good to be a Boston fan."

Though the article didn't exactly make me realize it, it made me look at the fact that it truly is good to be a Boston sports fan.

Boston Bruins (Hockey)

After a great regular season in which they racked up a whopping 116 points, the "B's" are in the midst of a fired-up, hard hitting quarterfinal series with the Montreal Canadiens. They currently lead the series 1-0, and I'm watching them tear up game two right now.

The score is 5-1 at the end of the second period, with the fifth goal coming with under two seconds left.

It seems fitting that if the Bruins go on to win the Cup, they will have done so by defeating such a historically heart-breaking foe as the Montreal Canadiens.

They have serious potential to win the Stanley Cup this year, which would be the first in my lifetime.

Boston Red Sox (Baseball)

The Sox 2009 campaign has started at a slow pace, going 4-6 over their first ten games.

The offseason was focused on shoring up their pitching staff, and this will pay off during the long season. It really is a long season, so I am not currently concerned.

They lost in the American League Championship Series last year, but even making it to that point is an accomplishment of which we should be proud. They have won two World Series since their 86-year drought, which is nothing short of a miracle to us Boston fans who had become used to the agonizing perennial failure.

Boston Celtics (Basketball)

What can we say about the "C's"?

The "Big Three" has been broken up for the postseason. Doc Rivers says that there is about a one percent chance of Kevin Garnett playing at all during the playoffs.

They lost a close one in the first game of their playoff opener, as I watched captain Paul Pierce miss a free-throw with 2.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter. They went on to lose 105-103 in overtime, and I checked myself into the hospital.

New England Patriots (Football)

The "Pats" are primed to make another serious Super Bowl run in 2009. The Patriots are the Boston team I dedicate most of my attention to, year-round. (You can read about the Patriots' 2009 offseason on my blog, Patriot Pat's Patsies.)

Since Robert Kraft bought the team, they have won more games than any other team.

They've been in five Super Bowls, winning three.

They missed the playoffs last year for the first time since 2002, even after winning 11 games.

They have made some key free-agent acquisitions, and have a league-high 11 picks in the draft this year.

Tom Brady is coming back, and has recently worked out with Joey Galloway. Galloway commented about experience, saying he was impressed with Brady's accuracy and arm strength.

As Tom Martinez, Brady's private coach said: "The surgery was to his knee. It was not on his heart or his brain. They didn’t operate on those. He’s a winner, one of the better winners of all time."

Tom Brady can speak without saying a word, and achieve what others may only imagine. That's right, he's an honorary Recon Marine in my mind.

Oh, one other thing: Yes, he is watching you.

Andrew Cahill is a true Boston sports fan. The "State of the Union" will focus on the four major Boston sports teams.

Thanks ctpatsfan77, for the Brady/Galloway info from Reiss.

Memo To Rodney Harrison: Are You In, or Are You Out?

Patriot Pat says-

Rodney Harrison has said that he will make a decision on June 1st to return to the New England Patriots, or not. To me, this seems a little too late.

He should make that decision before the draft.

I'm not sure how the Patriots will approach the draft in terms of aggressively drafting a Rodney Harrison replacement, but I think that they should at least know for sure if they really need to.

There is speculation that Rodney Harrison will be a "back-burner" of sorts, and that he may be called upon later on in the season if he is needed.

The Patriots may draft Safety early this year even without knowing that Harrison will be back. If that is the case, there is call for them to draft Louis Delmas from Western Michigan. They also have shown interest in Oregon's Patrick Chung.

I have recently been interested in Louis Delmas, however, my original thoughts towards this draft were to forgo Safety in the draft this year, and make it a priority next year.

They could trade into next year, and go after USC prospect NFL-Draft/taylor_mays.htm" target="_blank" title="Taylor Mays">Taylor Mays. He would be a long-term answer for replacing Harrison.

It can't be said what exactly the Patriots are thinking, and whether Rodney's decision would hold any water on how they approach the draft anyway.

Even with that said, and even though he is one of my favorite Patriots, the fact that Rodney Harrison decided to wait so long to make a decision like this doesn't sit well with me.

Tom Brady Is Not Good | Peyton Manning Is Good

Patriot Pat says-

"Oh please help me! I'm Tom Brady, and I am not good."

Tom Brady is without a doubt the most overrated quarterback that has ever played the game of football at the professional level.

Peyton Manning is the best, though. The fact that there is such debate raging is childish.

Yep, Peyton Manning is the best quarterback, no doubt in my mind.

In fact, I bet Peyton evens takes Brady in a 12-round bout.

Peyton gets more girls, and makes more money.

Peyton has bigger muscles, is taller, and just all around better looking.

Peyton even has a movie deal coming after he retires. Whats Tom Brady gonna do, just be his wife's lacky?

Ok, this is Andrew. Apparently Peyton Manning hacked my account, and wrote this. I don't know how to delete the article though. Thanks for one more article Peyton. Ya jerk.

Oh, and Tom Brady is watching you.
